he Assamese population in the City is agog with festive spirits. The community celebrates one of the most important festivals, the Magh Bihu, on Saturday, which is marked by feasting and the jol (a delicacy). “Traditionally the feast is organised in the paddy fields where temporary thatched huts called belaghar are set up. In front of them we light a pyramidshaped bonfire with hay, bamboo and wood called meji. But for the last seven years I’ve been away from home and I miss the traditional fervour of Bihu,” says Rita Chaudhary, a technical writer in the City.

“I miss the fun around the festival and the feast. Bihu is usually a week-long celebration. There are several traditions associated with the Magh Bihu. The festival is also known as Bhogali Bihu. Bhog means food and the name signifies that the stores and granaries in homes are filled with newly harvested crop,” says Rumi Borah, an IT employee in the City. “Although we get a few Assamese delicacies in the City, for those of us who hail from Assam, the authentic taste of food at home

is irreplaceable,” says Chayanika Bhattacharya, who feels that despite many Assamese living in the City the essence of Magh Bihu is missing. Bihu is not just about food and bonfire, it’s also associated with many sports and games. “During childhood, we used to enjoy buffalo fights, cockfights and bulbuli fights. However, this is now diminishing,” says Chayanika. Traditionally, the Assamese spend the entire night around a bonfire singing folk songs, beating drums and playing games. The next morning people gather around the mejis and throw in pithas (rice cakes) and betel nuts as an offering to the fire god. The assortment of delicacies include komal saul, mudi, akhoi, xandoh, mah kodai, cakes made from date palm, pitha and kalamdani dhanor sira.

yderabad’s new mayor Mohd Majid Hussain seems to be gung ho about his new role. According to sources, the new mayor who has completed eight days in office is eager to get a hold of the state of affairs of the GHMC. Hussain is reportedly keen to understand the basics of administration and face the challenges lying ahead in terms of delivering services to the over 7 lakh population of the corporation. The mayor, who assumed charge on January 5, has already held review meetings with GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu, special commissioner Naveen Mittal, engineer in chief Dhan Singh and all additional commissioners in the last few days. Many top officials in the corporation are saying that the new mayor, being young and enthusiastic, is keen on learning the nuances of administration and welfare programmes. “The mayor is eager to learn things. He is keen to know the status of various ongoing devel-

The first challenge the mayor going to face is the approval of the budget for the next financial year (2012-13). He is holding a special standing committee meeting on January 18. It may be emphasised that the draft budget for this year is pegged at `2900 crores. Sources at the corporation told Postnoon that the subject of finance seems to be an alien language to the new mayor. He is making an effort to understand financial terms like revenue surplus and revenue deficit. The mayor held a review meeting with additional commissioner (Finance) Shiva Parvathi and other officials to find out the salient features of the annual budget. The officials reportedly explained and appraised him of various aspects of the budget. “The subject of finance and annual budget seems to be an alien subject to the mayor. But he is showing a lot of interest in knowing the subject and get a grasp over it,” said one official from the finance department.

DP chief Chandrababu Naidu has directed his party functionaries to tour the State in groups and assess the damage caused to crops due to recent torrential rains. Teams have been formed which will tour the State and

submit a report on crop loss to Naidu on January 17. Party leaders Dasari Balavardhan Rao and Tangirala Prabhakar visited Guntur on Thursday. While Dhoolipalla Narendra Kumar and Jonnakuti Vanita would visit Krishna district on Friday.

Postnoon, in an earlier edition, revealed that the prince was one of the property tax defaulters. “The web hosting of the top 1,000 property tax defaulters’ names and issue of 8 lakh warrants to property owners has yielded results. We will continue this practice in future too,” GHMC additional commissioner (Finance) Shiva Parvathi told Postnoon. Officials of the corporation are expecting to achieve their entire target in the ongoing financial year. ndia’s second-largest urban development authority, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), is plagued with problems. The authority, which played a crucial role in auctioning valuable government lands is now searching for other options to generate income owing to various prevailing factors. The Telangana agitation and the slump in the reality sector are main factors to blame. It may be recalled that it takes credit for the construction of prestigious projects like Outer Ring Road (ORR), PVNR Elevated Expressway and all the flyovers in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts. Between the years 2004– 2010, the authority had earned `3,818 crore by auctioning 650 acres of land. Of this amount, the HMDA had paid `2,684 crore to the State government towards resource mobilisation leaving the authority penniless. Attempts by the HMDA to generate income also did not succeed as the realty sector recorded a heavy downfall due to the Telangana agitation since

December 2009. The notifications issued by the authorities for auctioning 4.7 acres of land in the upmarket Nandagiri Hills did not garner the expected response from buyers.

Accounts seized The condition of HMDA is so bad, it could not even pay tax to the IT Department on the income it earned from the land auctions between the years 2004–2010. The IT Department had issued notices to HMDA, which the officials chose to ignore. In November 2009, the IT Department seized HMDA’s bank accounts and filed a case against the authority with the Tribunal. When HMDA approached the State government for help, it immediately set up a three-member committee to look into the issue.

Income source The remaining income generating sources of HMDA are the 4.79 acres in Nandagiri Hills, plots in Miyapur, Nallagandla, Asifnagar and Ramachandrapuram areas. The State government has given the HMDA an extension to Land Regularisation Scheme (LRS). The HMDA officials have decided to increase the existing LRS amount from 14 per cent to 20 per cent of the total land value.

New Telugu text books in limbo EDUCATION

t all started as Numaish Masnuaat-e-Mulki, with just 50 stalls in the Public Gardens. Over the years it has grown in scope and size to land an all-India status. Today it is the biggest and often cheapest entertainer. No other event in the City draws crowds like Numaish. With Numaish in its 72nd year, old-timers recall how the fair, over the years, has reflected the changing lifestyle of the people. “It is one of the oldest and longest-running exhibitions. Modernisation with all its trappings has not been able to penetrate into its oldworld charm. It’s royal, yet typically Hyderabadi” said, Izaz Ali, owner of Kashmir Handicrafts here. “It’s been 50 years now. Initially my grandfather and father use to manage the stall and now it’s me. There has been tremendous change over the years. Earlier there was no competition as there were few stalls, but now the scenario is different; customers bargain a lot as they have the option of buying from other shops” he adds. S Abdul Rais, owner of Rajasthan Handicrafts Emporium said, “It’s Numaish and Rajasthan Handicrafts Emporium’s 72nd year too. My forefathers use to pitch their stalls here since the Public Garden days. Initially there were only 50 stalls, but now the number is huge. Numaish organisers wanted to popularise local industry and bring manufacturers together on a common platform. Transporting goods from the railway station to Nampally was easier in those days

People used to buy garments, footwear, and household items, but today there is a flood of electronics and other consumer goods.” Recalling earlier years and his father’s words, Abdul adds, “The first Numaish was inaugurated by the 7th Nizam and it lasted for just 10 days. The Nizam continued to patronise Numaish and the following year it went up to 15 days. Seeking to popularise the exhibition, it was extended for a month. In 1946, the exhibition was shifted to its present site by Mirza Ismail.”

However, Manoj Kumar, from Jaipur, who owns Rajasthan Lac Bangle, is of a different opinion. “The exhibition may have grown, but there are many regulars who have dropped out of the exhibition. The ongoing T-agitation is the main reason for dropouts. Every year we had a group of 10 shopkeepers from Jaipur coming to Numaish, but for the last three to four years it’s just five of us.” Now, that’s a fact Numaish is the only event in the world to be organised without a break for 46 days at a stretch.

he Telugu Academy and the Board of Intermediate are at loggerheads over the printing of text books for Intermediate students. With the change in syllabus, there is every need for printing the new text books as per the NCERT standards. The issue was brought to the notice of the Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy. While Telugu Academy has been doing the job since ages, now the Inter Board is planning printing the text books with the help of private corporate printing houses. A source in the Telugu Academy said the officers were trying to divert the Academy work to private parties this time. There is also a change in syllabus for the Inter students keeping the National Entrance tests in mind. So there is a clash of interests between the Telugu Academy and also the Intermediate Board. This has to be sorted out by Minister for Higher Education Damodar Raja Narsimha who is also the Deputy Chief Minister. Telugu Academy has been surviving on the printing orders for Intermediate books as it’s the sole source of revenue. But if it goes into the hands of the Intermediate Board it will be all the more difficult for the Academy to survive. Printing of the English book has already been allocated to a private printer by the officials of the Intermediate Board.

Video old, but will act says PC NEW DELHI: Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday said that the footage of Jarawa tribeswomen being made to dance for tourists was “three to four years” old, and added that the government has asked the Andaman and Nicobar Island authorities to question the tour operator and videographer who shot the clip. Responding to questions on the footage posted by a British newspaper website which showed seminaked Jarawa women dancing for tourists, Chidambaram said whatever happened was violation of norms.

Bird Flu: Meghalaya begins culling SHILLONG: A 13-member rapid response team on Thursday began culling poultry birds at a farm in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya after the birds tested positive for the deadly H5N1 virus, an official said. “The culling operation started this evening, and we are hopeful to dispose of around 560 birds remaining in the government-run poultry farm at Williamnagar,” said animal husbandry and veterinary director D Lyngwa. The government had sent samples to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL) in Bhopal, after more than 3,000 birds died. Recently, Orissa had also reported incidents of bird flu and began culling of poultry birds. IANS

HC warns sites: Censor or face China-like ban

NEW DELHI: Like in China, Facebook and Google India’s websites can be blocked if they fail to come up with a mechanism to check and remove derogatory contents from their web pages, the Delhi High Court warned on Thursday. “Like China, we will block all such websites,” Justice Suresh Kait said, after Facebook and Google India said that it was impossible to control the derogatory contents uploaded on their websites. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Facebook India, said: “It is impossible to control the contents with billions of people accessing the site. A third party who uploads the content is not touched and we are sought to be liable in the case.” “Facebook India is not the controller of Facebook.com, it is Facebook.com which removes the content not me," he added.

NEW DELHI: Law minister Salman Khurshid on Wednesday said he did not agree with the Election Commission notice that he had violated the model code of conduct by promising 9 per cent reservation to backward Muslims in Uttar Pradesh and will send his reply to the poll panel. Khurshid contended that he had not violated model code as the Justice Rajinder Sachar panel and Justice Ranganath Misra commission have recommended quotas for Muslims. IANS

derogatory contents not me.” Google in its petition said that it had been appointed as a distributor of Google Inc’s Adwords programme in India on a principal-to-principal basis. “Google has not been

appointed as an agent, partner or franchise of Google Inc. In its capacity as a distributor, the petitioner engages in business development and promotional activities for certain limited products that include Google search, Youtube and Orkut," Rohtagi added. He admitted that some articles were obscene but said the company could not control that. He said: “People like crazy, obscene and defamatory articles, we cannot control people’s mind.” Neeraj Kishan Kaul for Google India said that the company was not liable as someone else posted the derogatory contents. The High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Delhi Police and Vinay Rai who had filed the petition in the trial court against the websites alleging they were hosting obscene and derogatory content. We urged the Obama Administration to take this as a priority. We will follow up not just for India but in the interests of America,” said Senator Mark Warner, Co-Chair, Senator India Caucus talking at a press conference in The Partnership Summit 2012. “We had sessions on information technology, biotechnology, pharmacy and life sciences and see India has a lot of opportunities and growth market in these areas,” he said. The information technology companies like Infosys and Wipro were planning to expand their footprint in America and wanted assurance to get their investments protected. The first move would be bilateral investment treaty. The concerns on outsourcing were less today compared to five years ago. That could be mitigated by Indian companies investing in United States of America. Every politician wanted to create jobs his own place, district and own country. America had to compete with the industries globally. “But if you see the visa issues, that there is legislation to make H1B Visa easier for graduates in Science, Engineering, Maths programmes to extend their stay. This will benefit Indians and create entrepreneurs in America,” he added.

HYDERABAD: Proving the adage – Old wine in a new bottle – right, most agreements entered into with industrial houses by the State government on the first day of Partnership Summit 2012 were the ones which were once shelved. They were ‘recovered’ and dusted again with a view to jacking up the investment figures. Understandably, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy wanted to showcase as the best investment destination, especially when the State passed through severe political turbulence in the last two years. Kiran Kumar Reddy was to a large measure successful in his effort of an image makeover of the State that was battered by numerous crises. While industries minister J Geeta Reddy fumbled in announcing the total investment coming in — perhaps a common slip, the State projected the inflow at Rs5.57 lakh crore. The first day memoranda of understanding (MoU) the government showcased were for Rs 81,000 crore. Chairman of GMR Group signed an MoU for the Rs30,000-crore refinery-cumpetrochemical complex in the Petro Chemical and Petroleum Industrial region (PCPIR), which is projected to generate employment for 2,000 persons. This would be set up by GMR Holdings Pvt Ltd. And the note put out by the State government said another Rs3,000 crore was being invested by the GMR Infrastructure Ltd which would generate 4,000 jobs. The dichotomy is too glaring to be concealed, for an investment of Rs30,000 crore can create only 2,000 jobs and a tenth of it has the potential to provide employment to double the number. Ironically, the GMR Group had earlier shelved this project. The infrastructure major stepped in after ONGC decided to drop out of the project. As soon as the PCPIR project was conceived, ONGC came forward to establish the refinery, but retracted as it found the project ‘unviable’. Only then, the GMR group was roped in. But nothing moved ever after and the company too remained

The Yash Birla group, which has been contemplating the investments for quite some time, will implement the projects only if the land is made available to them and hassle-free clearances were accorded. ndian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni dropped a bombshell when he casually mentioned during a press meeting that he was considering retirement from Test format by 2013 to ensure he can be there for the 2015 World Cup. No one’s fooled when the 30-year-old skipper announced this as the team has been performing dismally in tours outside the sub-continent where they have to face real pace and bounce. When the captain himself is sulking like a child after receiving flak from different quarters, it exposes how low the team morale is. Starring before adulating crowds on ‘dead’ domestic pitches may have boosted personal records but performing on the green wickets abroad is a different ball game altogether. Captain Cool needs to do some serious pep talk and get his squad to buck up and deliver rather than attempting these lame tactics to divert attention from the glaring failures.

y the time my extended family members finish reading this column, they’ll think I’m the snootiest brat the family’s ever given birth to. And I don’t deny that I perhaps am. I believe family functions are the biggest torture in social situations I’ve ever had to endure — sometimes in the name of a pooja, at other times in the name of weddings and wedding anniversaries, birthdays, naming ceremonies and deaths. I confess that I’ve considered many a time to down a tequila shot or two before attending these dos. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a closet depressive maniac who detests all social situations. Far from it. I have a healthy social life and a large inner and outer circle of friends who make my days more than meaningful. About extended family members, I’m not sure I can say the same. Take, for example, an 82-year-old uncle who believes in the idea of open criticism. Just that the criticism is so open and so loud that it borders on the abusive and sometimes even crosses that line. If he doesn’t get his soup hot, he yells at the bearers. If he doesn’t get a good dinner seat, he yells at the hosts. If he thinks the pundit didn’t do a good job of reciting the mantras, he yells at the poor man in the saffron robes. A few weeks back he yelled at me. Reason? I didn’t answer his phone call. I tried to explain that I was driving. He said: “I don’t care what you were doing. How dare you not answer the phone when I call!” I had become the centre of attention and those around us were staring at me. I’ve been avoiding the uncle at all social events because one never knows when he’s going to break into a tirade of abuses. He doesn’t mean bad, mom says. But when she starts to speak of his good heart, I turn up the volume on the car stereo. For some time, I pause to wonder why. Is this behaviour an outward manifestation of his desire to hold on to the heyday when he controlled businesses and had a busy life? Or is it coming from possessiveness for the once-jointnow-broken-down family? Maybe it’s both, and also his conviction that he continues to wield that kind of power on us. Isn’t this the story of pretty much every family unit, where the baton is passed on to the next generation but the

ow many times have you dealt with a churning tummy accompanied by nausea and a heavy head after a food fest or when you’ve popped a tablet on an empty stomach? You put it down to an upset stomach and reach out for that glass of nimbu paani. But hold on, your symptoms signal acidity and not an upset stomach. And that nimbu paani will only do more harm than good.

What is acidity? The stomach has gastric glands which secrete acids to help digest the food we eat. Usually the acid levels in the body are controlled, but if for some reason the levels of these acids increase, then it can cause acidity. Sometimes when we consume hard to digest foods, the stomach secretes more acids to digest it. Continuous secretion of more acids can cause acidity. “Sometimes a bacterial infection is also responsible for that burning sensation in the stomach, the most common type of bacteria being H.Pylori,” says Dr Sundeep Lakhtakia, consultant gastroenterologist at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology. Usually people who’ve had a heavy meal may also have a burning sensation in their upper

abdomen or chest. Often popping medicines on an empty stomach or frequently taking painkillers can also cause acidity. Long gaps between meals are also said to cause acidity, which is why experts stress on the need to eat frequent small meals.

Symptoms Often when you may find that you wake up with a heavy head and an uncomfortable feeling in the stomach. These are some common symptoms of acidity. Other symptoms include: n Heartburn — burning pain in your stomach n Throat dryness n Unbearable stomach pain n Coughing n Feeling hungry frequently n Hours after a meal Chest pain n Constant pain in the upper abdomen n Prolonged heartburn n Nausea

What you can do A prolonged acidity problem can sometimes give rise to stomach ulcers too. So a few steps can help you battle acidity effectively. “Simple things like taking medications only after eating something can help curb acidity. If you’re taking a long course of painkillers or aspirin then you must consult with your doctor about taking a preventive acid suppressing medicine to protect your stomach,” says Dr Sundeep, adding, “Avoid eating fried stuff, spicy foods and always eat within limit. Nicotine, alcohol and citrus foods should be kept at bay when you have acidity.” Dr Sundeep adds that it is important to eat in moderation and frequently to keep the gastric acid levels within normal limits. “Sometimes the acid can trickle into the mouth and give rise to a recurrent cough or sore throat,” he says. And yes, steering clear of oily and spicy food for a while will help too.

My son is a month old and doing quite well otherwise. But a week ago we noticed a small swelling on he right side of his neck. It seems to be quite painless but for some reason since the time we have noticed this swelling we also feel that he is keeping his head tilted to one side. I have tried massaging his neck 3-4 times a day but nothing seems to be helping him. Please advise. This is not an uncommon occurrence. Most probably what your son has is called a ‘sternomastoid swelling’. The exact cause of this condition is not clearly known but it is often associated with breach and forceps deliveries. Sometimes babies with this condition may also have hip problems which need to be looked into. An ultrasound of the neck will help to confirm the diagnosis. Massage does not help much. What you need to do is stretch the affected neck muscle by gently moving the child’s head away from the side of the swelling. This should be done at least 6-8 times a day. Until this finding, it wasn’t clear which came first — whether the disruption of biological clock mechanisms was the cause or the result of neurodegeneration. The biological clock, in humans and animals, is a complex genetic mechanism tuned

to the 24-hour day and regular cycles of light, dark and sleep. It influences a wide range of biological processes — from fertility to hormone production, feeding patterns, DNA repair, sleep, stress reactions, even the effectiveness of medications. “In these experiments, we showed through both environmental and genetic approaches that disrupting the biological clock accelerated these health problems,” said Kuntol Rakshit, an Oregon State University grad-

It is more or less a complete food, and the best source of calcium. It is difficult to get most kids to have plain milk. Hence try and give kids milk in different forms, with attractive appearance and flavours. You can give them either hot or cold milk to suit the consumption moments and moods, eg warm malt shakes, breakfast cereal with milk, fruit custard, puddings etc. n Cheese/paneer: is a good source of calcium. It is easy to incorporate it in many dishes for kids like, sandwiches, veggie sub, and chapati rolls. n Curd: many children may prefer to eat curd than drink milk. n Ragi: among cereals ragi is a good source of calcium. Ragi/flour with its appearance and bland flavour is difficult for kids to accept but can be mixed with other cereals like in rotis, malted ragi, ragi halwa etc. n Green leafy vegetables: children don’t like these but they are the best sources of micronutrients. You could try giving kids mint parathas, powdered or pasted forms of leafy vegetables can be used in curries instead of adding them directly. n Egg: veggie scrambled, French toasts and cheesy omelets can be interesting ways of providing calcium and many important nutrients for kids growth and development. alini Gangadharan found her life’s calling way back in school itself. A field trip to a flood relief centre became so ingrained in her psyche that she knew right away what she had to do with her life. With liberal parents, and years later, an equally liberal husband, there was no stopping Nalini. The atmosphere in her office is reflective of her persona — energetic, powerful and confident. She says, “When you are able to negotiate your spaces, there is so much you can achieve. Unfortunately, though people today are more assertive, the girl child is still not the priority. There are not too many choices that a girl has. If she is not interested in studies, the only option people think they have is to get her married. Even in the rural setup, in case of economic or societal pressure, the first casualty is the girl. We are striving to change that.” Nalini is optimistic about women’s position in society today. “It feels good to see that women have naturally found their space in various fields, be it in public service, armed forces, aviation or medical science.” But that said, Nalini feels that there’s a flip-side to it too. She says, “Women today are so target-oriented and result-oriented that there is little time to give to the family. Though many may consider me to be conservative, I believe that the man may be the head of the family, but the woman is the heart of the family. She can don the role of a professional, and at the same time, be a great contributor to the needs of the family. I see that balance dwindling today — relationships are so fragile, they don't seem to

withstand the test of time.” Nalini strongly believes in the harmonious alliance of a husband and wife in achieving professional and domestic goals. “I have seen my own parents, and the way they chal-

All that changed when I saw the man that would later become my husband.” Nalini’s organisation, the CAP Foundation has brought back the smiles to many livelihoods and has been spinning success stories in 12 states across the country.

Hell, yes! This little column is my tribute to all these independent women who have been able to find their little space in the ever-demanding urban world. It is a salute to those who, despite the demands of the daily life, are able to find peace, albeit for a few minutes over a cup of coffee before embarking on the ‘journey of life’. It is a recognition of her strength to monitor her fragile sensitivities in a world that claims to be built on equality, but one that doesn’t refrain from baring their claws. We are not ready to accept the ‘given’ anymore and we have the gusto to realise dreams that sound surreal to the rest, and display the otherwise invisible ‘taken’ signboard only when we have found the right man, and not because society said so. We are those that are secretly looked up to, admired by many, and yes, envied by a few. We live life to the fullest, know our ‘boundaries’ and yet dream to the fullest. We do realise that it is not a perfect world, but also know that in chasing that ever-elusive perfection, we do not want to lose out on the present. Unlike many, who haven’t been able to break free from the shackles set by society, we are the lucky few who have managed to create our own space — spaces that despite unspoken societal pressures, allow us to write and rewrite our own life’s stories, one at a time. And the best part about this? We are growing in numbers, one at a time.

We take a look at the biggest mid-January hits from the past 10 years Mirapakay (2011) This Ravi Teja, Richa and Deeksha Seth starrer competed with four other films in 2011 and emerged as the winner. Directed by Harish Shankar, the film had Ravi Teja as an undercover cop who joins a college for an operation. A laugh riot with adequate action and romance, the film had all the right ingredients to hook the audience throughout the film. Thaman's music also worked a lot in favour of the film.

Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (2005)

Desamuduru (2007)

Siddharth and Trisha made waves at the box-office in 2005 with Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, which released on the same day as Naa Alludu. Loosely inspired from Maine Pyar Kiya, Prabhu Deva made his debut as a director with this film and it even won the Filmfare Award for Best Film that year. All the songs were chartbusters and there were instances of people watching the film at least five times to watch Siddharth and Trisha's dazzling onscreen chemistry.

Allu Arjun showed off his six-pack for the first time in Desamuduru, which inspired a lot more actors in the film industry to follow suit. Puri Jagannadh, who was on a high after the success of Pokiri, directed the film and Hansika made her debut in Telugu cinema in this action drama. It still remains as one of the biggest hits ever in Allu Arjun's career.

Varsham (2004) Two years after making his debut, Prabhas turned out to be a heartthrob with this film, which was directed by Shoban. It was also Trisha's first big-ticket film in Telugu and her performance got her rave reviews. Devi Sri Prasad's music was an instant chartbuster and the rest, as they say, is history.

Okkadu (2003) Okkadu turned out to be an instant classic when it released in January 2003. After a string of flops, both Mahesh Babu and Gunasekhar made a comeback in style and how! Bhumika's restrained performance, Prakash Raj's villainy, dialogues and screenplay were almost perfect. The film is still rated among the best Telugu films made in the past 10 years and it's not without a reason.

Arundhati (2009) The film that catapulted Anushka's fame to the zenith, Arundhati shattered several box office records in 2009 before Magadheera released. The film proved to be the box-office king and raked in a share of close to `35 crore. Considering that only Anushka and Sonu Sood played lead roles in the film, it was nothing short of a miracle. It swept the Nandi Awards that year and Anushka won every possible award for her power-packed performance. The film once again provided a glimmer of hope for women-centric films.

Lakshmi (2006) Venkatesh, Nayanthara and Charmee starrer Lakshmi was a box-office winner in January 2006. After a long time, Venkatesh was seen in an action-packed film and it worked quite well with the audience. Apart from Lakshmi, another film named Devadasu went on to be a huge hit after a slow start. Ram and Ileana made their debut in this film directed by YVS Chowdary and it didn't take too long for both Ram and Ileana to establish themselves as bankable stars in the Telugu film industry.

Adhurs (2010) Adhurs starring Tarak, Nayanthara and Sheela in lead roles released amidst high drama in 2010. Telangana Rashtra Samithi had threatened to stop the screening of the film in several districts across Telangana; however, that didn't stop the film from becoming one of the top grossers of 2010. VV Vinayak and Tarak had teamed up after six years and Tarak played a dual role in the film much to the delight of his fans.

Krishna (2008)

Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu (2002) Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu starring Tarun and Aarthi Agarwal beat other biggies like Naga and Takkari Donga in January, 2002 much to the surprise of trade analysts. The film had the right mix of romance, comedy and family drama and Tarun scored a hit after two years of Nuvve Kavali's release.

The film resurrected Ravi Teja and VV Vinayak's careers when both of them were going through a brief slump. It was the first time Ravi Teja and Vinayak had teamed up for a film. Ravi Teja and Brahmanandam's combination clicked so well that the audience couldn't stop raving about the comedy and Trisha's presence helped the film to become a huge hit.

Action-packed life Model-turned-actor Shaurya Chauhan’s struggle is finally paying off as she now joins Hrithik in the second installment of Krissh Taniya Talukdar taniya.t@postnoon.com

haurya is keeping a pretty tight schedule as she shuffles between promoting her film Sadda Adda, which releases today and trains for Krissh 2. Talking about her role in Sadda Adda, the former Kingfisher calendar girl says, “I play the role of a spoilt, rich Delhi girl called Shreya Gujral who has an adventurous streak. She is a strong-headed girl who doesn’t need anyone’s shoulders to cry on. If she loves somebody, then she doesn’t really like to shares their problems.” But Shaurya is quick to clarify that there are no similarities between the character and her in real life. “There would be no fun in that case in doing the role!” she exclaims, going on to add, “In real life, if I am in love with somebody, I would love to share everything with that person and I will always be there for him. It was difficult for me to do the role because if it wasn’t balanced, it would turn into a negative character.” While Shaurya didn’t really relate to the other aspects of the character, she did relate to the adventurous part of it. “I too, have an adventurous streak and I like to ride bikes and drive cars,” says Shaurya. It was perhaps this adventurous streak that got her the role in Krissh 2 where she has to perform a lot of stunts we hear. Though Shaurya remains tight-lipped about her role in the action-

hero film, on prodding she did share some interesting information. “I play a negative role in Krissh 2 and it will be perhaps the best anybody has seen of me on screen. Rakesh Roshan has given me a great opportunity and he

will be the first director to use my talent to its full potential. There is a lot of action in the film and I have been training for four hours every day, which will go on till I finish shooting for the film. My schedule is quite hectic right now but this is a once-in-alifetime opportunity for me and I want to do full justice to it. Rakesh Roshan has shown so much confidence in me, I don’t want to let him down,” explains the leggy beauty. We wanted to know if Hrithik has trained Shaurya for the film but apparently Hrithik is now busy taking care of his injuries and is training by himself. “I am training with a well-qualified fitness expert every day,” Shaurya

informs us. The Rajput beauty who did her schooling at Hyderabad considers herself a true Hyderabadi. “I have always loved this city and it gives me great pleasure when I see people from here making it big,” says Shaurya. The journey till here wasn’t an easy one; she has had her share of struggles. “I started off as a model in Hyderabad with just `500 and I still remember how much I had to struggle. Then I went to Bengaluru and Mumbai. It was a great experience and then Kingsfisher happened, after which I got into theatre,” reminisces Shaurya. The actor then makes an honest confession, “You should see my earlier films, I was pathetic at acting, but my passion to learn kept me going. Now I have improved a lot and have been signed up for Krissh 2. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this successful franchise?” she questions, and adds, “Everyone has their share of struggles and when the time is right you get your due. My experiences have made me who I am and today I am getting my due. There is nothing that one can’t achieve.” But there is one thing that the actress is unhappy about, she says, “I am from here but I haven’t done a Telugu film as yet. They go to Mumbai and get girls to come and work here, but also I understand they have their own requirements. But I am open to doing Telugu films and I would really like to work opposite the likes of Mahesh Babu and Ravi Teja.”

Deepika, Priyadarshan bury the hatchet

ctress Deepika Padukone and filmmaker Priyadarshan had a noisy fallout five years ago when she opted out of his project Pirates, but the two have patched up now and have agreed to work together. Priyadarshan was keen to launch Deepika but she chose to make her debut with Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om. After that Priyadarshan stayed away from Deepika until 2008 when Shah Rukh Khan used his clout to persuade Deepika to perform an item song in Priyadarshan’s Billu, which SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment had produced. Now it’s time for the director and actor to finally work together. “We broke the ice during the song in Billu Barber. Now I’ve a role just right for her,” said Priyadarshan. He has had no releases in

2011, but is ready to make up for the lost year with as many as four films this year. Of these, the ‘family comedy’ which he will direct in July has him specially kicked. Not only is he working with Abhishek Bachchan for the first time, he has also reached out to Deepika for the female lead opposite the actor. It’s a double delight for Priyadarshan since he has never worked with both the actors.” IANS

Preeti back to fulltime acting with Yeh Hai Mumbai

reeti Jhangiani, who turned producer with Sahi Dhande Galat Bande, in which she was seen as a news reporter, is ready for her full-fledged acting comeback with Yeh Hai Mumbai. Preeti, 31, who made her Bollywood debut with Mohabbatein, is looking forward to the acting assignment. “Preeti is very excited about this film, as it is a heroine oriented film and she has a very interesting role in the film,” said a source close to the actor who is married to Parvin Dabas and took a break after the birth of her son. Half the schedule of the movie, produced under the banner of SAM productions, is already complete, and the rest is being shot and should be done soon. Written and directed by Sneh Tull, the film is said to be inspired by a real life Bollywood character. Preeti has thus been working extra hard and rehearsing to get into the skin of the character. Other actors in the film include Neeraj Vora, Meghna Patel and Bijendra Kala. IANS

It’s tough to convince me, says Shweta s Prerna of Kasautii Zindagii Kay, TV actress Shweta Tiwari played so many shades of a woman’s personality that she now finds it hard to accept most roles offered to her. “I did so much in ‘Kasautii...’, and played so many shades of a woman in that one show, that when someone offers me a role, I feel I have already done it in ‘Kasautii...’. So it is very difficult to convince me for a role,” says Shweta. However, the 31-year-old admits it was an instant decision to give a nod to Sony’s Parvarish

in which she plays a simple mother. “When I got the script, and read it, I was ready to do the show. It is such a simple, true-to-life story, and I am sure this show will be a trendsetter,” she said. eyonce Knowles has apparently birthed a controversy along with a daughter. Lenox Hill Hospital, the New York facility where Knowles gave birth to her first child Blue Ivy Carter over the weekend, is being investigated by the New York State department of health following complaints by other patients that they were mistreated by security staff, the New York Daily News

reports. Earlier this week, multiple outlets reported that patients were complaining about being prevented from seeing their newborns in the hospital’s neonatal unit by security guards who refused to give them access to the unit during Knowles’ hospital stay with her husband, rapper/mogul Jay-Z. TMZ even reported that some of new mothers were consider-

ing filing a lawsuit at the hospital, after allegedly being ‘neglected’ by hospital staff, while some mothers were seen arguing with ‘extremely rude’ private security.

Isabelle Fuhrman in talks for Shyamalan’s next

unger Games actor Isabelle Fuhrman is in negotiations to co-star alongside Will Smith in M Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi film After Earth, TheWrap has confirmed. Also, the Columbia movie has a new name. It was previously titled 1000 A.E. If Fuhrman’s deal is finalised, she would play a friend of the central character, a young boy played by Smith’s son, Jaden Smith. In the movie, the boy navigates an abandoned Earth 1,000 years in the future to save himself and his estranged father (Will Smith) after their ship crashes. After Earth is currently in preproduction. Shooting is to begin in March, and a theatrical release date of June 7, 2013, is targeted.

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

MELBOURNE: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are in the same half of a grand slam for the first time in seven years after the draw made Friday for next week's Australian Open in Melbourne. Defending champion Novak Djokovic has world number four Andy Murray in the top half of the men's singles draw, while Nadal and Federer, second and third ranked respectively, were placed for the bottom half. It is the first time since the 2005 French Open that 16-time grand slam champion Federer and 10-time major winner Nadal have been pitted in the same half of a grand slam draw. Peterhansel consolidates

AREQUIPA: Stephane Peterhansel of France consolidated his overall lead in the car section of the Dakar Rally on Thursday with victory in the 11th stage of the gruelling race, between Arica, Chile, and the Peruvian town of Arequipa. Mini driver Peterhansel, who is bidding for a 10th win in the Dakar after having already won six times in the motorbikes and three times in the cars, clocked 3hr 56min 53sec over the 598km stage, which featured a 478km timed run. Spanish driver Nani Roma came in second in his Mini at 3:44, with Portugal's Ricardo Leal Dos Santos, also in a Mini, 8:56 behind Peterhansel's pace.
