espite the brazen manner in which a suspended head constable detained a superintendent of police on Wednesday making the entire government machinery run for cover, no case has been registered. Police transport organisation’s SP E Laxminarayana was detained in a shop reportedly owned by suspended head constable KN Giriprsada Sharma near Haca Bhawan, Adarsh Nagar. It is said that the SP went into Sharma’s shop after the latter summoned him. The head constable relented only when the DGP spoke to him

on phone and asked to meet him. The issue reached the home ministry too. When Postnoon contacted DCP Central Zone Tarun Joshi, he said that Sharma was detained but not arrested. It is said that Sharma has filed a Lokayukta case against the SP and the officer was alleged to be eager to settle it.
Sharma was head constable with PTO for the past few years and he was suspended by the additional SP Vijay Kumar eight months ago for many malpractices. After this incredible incident that put the whole police machinery to shame, the Saifabad police did not book a serious case against Sharma which has raised many eyebrows in the constabulary. It is difficult to believe that a high-ranking police officer with two armed guards for personal safety was held hostage for six long hours. It is also not clear how a police personal owns a shop. Meanwhile, Sharma met the DGP today and pleaded his case.

Groups of young boys jump into the waters and rummage for saleable items such as plastic, metals, gems and in certain cases even a piece of gold. The chemicals in the lake due to idols proves to be a major health risk for these young unaware boys.

The bamboo park in Jubilee Hills, had everything to become a popular spot, but littering and a lack of maintenance have left it in a state. M ANIL KUMAR
Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com
I
magine if an overseas guest participating in the CBD wants to see some parks of Hyderabad and he chooses the bamboo park on Road No 36 in Jubilee Hills which is not far from HICC. What he will witness will ruin the image of Hyderabad and India. Situated in a prime locality, it is one of the important theme parks open to general public. Opened in the year 2000, the bamboo park is in shambles. The craftsmen and artistes who developed the park are likely to shed tears after witnessing the current pathetic condition of the park. Spread over 6,000 square feet, this park should have been a prided asset zealously guarded by any municipal corporation. This important park is not in the GHMC's beautification list! The park has now been turned into a place for idlers and drunkards. One of the reasons is the close proximity of a wine shop. According to GHMC workers, these elements have damaged and stolen all the wooden artefacts, including wooden benches and wooden planks over the streams. “A night watchman is posted but he is helpless in controlling the elements," they say. With the Jubilee Hills police station close-by, the park has also become a place to 'lounge' for litigants to settle disputes. The beautiful water ponds that should have provided home to water lilies is now a receiving point for drainage water. Streams that carried fresh water now carry this drainage from one point to another point. “It has become a mosquito breeding ground,” points out the worker, while showing her hand bitten by mosquitoes.
Maintained by the Urban Forestry department under the GHMC, the park is under the jurisdiction of the same official who takes care of other parks in Jubilee Hills Check post. “We shall be developing the park in the near future,” is the only response of the official. It is believed that the in-charge rarely visits the park. According to the forest range officer, Venkataiah the park is well maintained and various varieties of bamboos are being taken care of by the GHMC. But nothing to his claim could be seen. The people residing in the area opine that the park under continued neglect may end up in the hands of a land shark. “Several open spaces meant for park have already been encroached in the areas of Banjara and Jubilee Hills. May be, it is one of the reasons this
being an open space was turned into a park. But what is the use, when no one enjoy the beauty,” laments, P Sharath, a regular visitor. The City has some 12 theme parks, under GHMC. This park is under direct supervision of GHMC. Even though the additional commissioner, P Anuradha maintains that `8.6 crore is being utilised for the COP for parks and medians, this theme park does not seem to be in the priority list. The official maintains that all the theme parks are getting a facelift, as part of the upcoming COP, but no activity could be seen near the park, except antisocial elements. “Even this bamboo theme park is under renovation. We have ordered special species of bamboos from West Bengal and Assam, the consignment will arrive,”says P

According to the official about 15 species of bamboos would be planted in the park in the next few days. She refutes the argument that there might be someone who would try to encroach the park. “The people who live in the surrounding areas are descent,” is her reply.

‘I’m too young to be CM’ Sridhar Babu’s immediate focus is on helping Karimnagar prosper. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com
H
e is perhaps the youngest and most active ministers in the State Cabinet. A self-confessed workaholic, his main aim is to render service to the public. Minister for State civil supplies and legislative affairs, D Sridhar Babu, in a freewheeling chat with Postnoon talks about everything from contemporary politics to issues related to governance and the upcoming Assembly session. Rubbishing rumours that he will be made the next CM, he insists that he is too young to hold the post and as of now his aim is to make Karimnagar, his native district, the most prosperous place. Q:You held the higher education portfolio during K Rosaiah’s tenure. But in Kiran’s cabinet you were made the civil supplies minister. Was it your choice? No. I did not choose this ministry. The CM allocated me this department as it is his prerogative. Q:You are holding a crucial portfolio in the State. What measures have you taken to check the growing inflation in the State? Well, inflation is a global
phenomenon. Though, the State is not directly responsible for it, as a responsible government, we have taken a lot of measures to check inflation, especially in the food sector. We have opened premium quality rice distribution centres in Rythu Bazaars for consumers. We are planning to open government super bazaars to provide essential food commodities at subsidised rates to consumers of the State. Q:The Centre has directed the State to decentralise the public distribution system in procurement of rice. What progress has the State made towards this? I must say, it’s a revolutionary scheme to bring in transparency in the PDS. The State government has geared itself up to implement the decentralisation system from the ensuing procurement season scheduled to begin from October. We have already held orientation for the officials. We are planning to procure 15 lakh metric tonnes from stakeholders in the first year. We are also taking the help of FCI in its implementation. Q:Rumour mills are abuzz that you will become the CM in the event of separate Telangana state formation. What do you have to say about it? I don’t think so. Well, I am too young to be a chief minister. Moreover, I am not aspiring for
the CM’s post. I am immensely happy with what I have now. And, I am too occupied with my responsibilities to think about such things. Q:The much awaited Assembly session is being held in a few days. There are reports that the main opposition TDP might move a No Confidence Motion against your government apart from raising other public problems? Let them move the No Confidence Motion. We are scared of the motion and are fully prepared to face it. They did it once earlier but could not succeed in their attempts. As far as other problems like power crisis is concerned, we don’t mind accepting our mistakes. But at the same time, we will try to convince the people by telling them the facts related to the problems. Q:As a politician what is your ambition? The ambition of my life is to make my native place Karimnagar the most prosperous district in the State. We have already embarked upon the path of development. The district has already achieved the number one of status in maize and rice production. Apart from this, it has also become a hub for higher education in the entire north Telangana region.

Babu faces Seemandhra revolt POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com
T
he TDP’s impending decision of extending its support to the demand for a separate Telangana, is creating a flutter among Seemandhra leaders in the party. The party leaders are now openly expressing their displeasure over the TDP chief’s intention to write a letter to the PM demanding Telangana state. Majority of the leaders from Seemandhra and Rayalaseema regions are worried that the extension of support to a separate T-state demand would lead to exodus of leaders and cadres from the party to other political parties like Congress and YSRC. “As a public representative from Rayalaseema and as the first person to resign from my legislatorship protesting division of the state, I clearly put forth my feelings and
Naidu is convinced that supporting the T cause will win him more seats in the Telangana region where the YSRC does not have a stronghold. viewpoints before our president. I requested him not to support a separate Telangana state,” TDP MLA from Anantapur district Payyavula Keshav told Postnoon. He, however, hastened to add that despite his personal views, he would abide by the party’s decision. “To me the party’s interests are paramount,” he said. A senior leader of the party and politburo member, on the condition of anonymity, said that the party would suffer a huge political setback in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions if it extended support to T-
state. “A pro-T decision will literally destroy the party in Rayalaseema and Andhra regions. The Congress and YSRC parties would launch a scathing attack on us for supporting division of state and provoke people against us,” he said.
NAIDU UNMOVED
The serious requests from TDP’s Seemandhra leaders are not moving party president Chandrababu Naidu as he has made up his mind to support T-state. Naidu’s firm decision is the result of the YSRC’s emergence as a dominant force in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions. Naidu, who is desperately trying to get back to power, seems to have come to the conclusion that he can better his chances by extending support to T-state as the TDP has strong cadre in this region. Apart from this, the non-existence of YSRC in Telangana will also help TDP give TRS a tough competition.

Whose hospital is it anyway?
HOME APPLIANCES
While sick children are dying in Niloufer hospital, which is packed beyond capacity with toddlers suffering from various ailments, the government chooses to look the other way. N SHIVA KUMAR
SUDESHNA KOKA Sudeshna.k@postnoon.com
O
n entering Niloufer Hospital one will wonder if it’s a hospital or a railway platform. From the entrance to the parking lot, patients and their relatives are all over, trying to squeeze into the little available space to catch a quick nap — sleep is out of the question. One reason for this overcrowding is the outbreak of dengue in Medak, Nizamabad and Mahabubnagar. All the affected children are being shifted to Niloufer Hospital, which remains the only government paediatric hospital in Hyderabad and Rangareddy district. Till Wednesday, the hospital had admitted 1,470 children who were suffering from viral fever and dengue. But the hospital’s capacity is only 500. In the last 15 days four deaths have been registered. “Since the last 15 days there has been a sudden rise in dengue cases. Patients have come from other districts to our hospital but we have only a 500-bed capacity. Yet, we have accommodated all of them. At present we are trying to treat 1,000 patients at one time,” said Dr Daruru Ranganath, superintendent. This year there has been a nearly 40 per cent increase in dengue cases. The heavy moisture content in the atmosphere is the main cata-
lyst for the disease to spread. While the medical superintendent says they are taking all steps humanely possible, many in the hospital foyer say they are deprived of medical care. “My daughter has fever since the last 14 days and it’s not subsiding, hence we rushed her to Niloufer. After coming here they

told us that she was all right and there is no need to admit her. We took her to King Koti government hospital where they refused to treat her. Now we are back here and have been living on the footpath outside Niloufer Hospital,” said Anusia K from Gajual. Only the other day, TRS floor leader, Etela Rajender, had the other day demanded that the State declare a health emergency due to the outbreak of dengue cases. “The government does not take any interest towards government hospitals. In the districts there has been an outbreak of viral fever, but the government hospitals there are not equipped to treat them. When the patients come here they are asked to leave, because the government hospitals do not have the capacity to treat them. This is a serious concern and something needs to be done about this.” “Dengue does not have any vaccine yet and keeping the environment clean is the only alternative. Most patients are between the age group of 3 to 5 years. Patients who come to Hyderabad are suffering from heavy bleeding, red rashes all over the body and shock. We giving them medication and conducting a platelet transfusion. There is no lack of blood in Hyderabad,” said the superintendent at Niloufer Hospital.
TECHNOLOGY
Our airport not digital friendly Security personnel at the airport still insist on hard copies of tickets before they allow a passenger to proceed for check in. An SMS notification is just not good enough for them. RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com
T
he Airport security does not believe in e-communication, nor does it believe much in saving papers and thereby precious trees. Security system at the airport is yet to wake up to the universally accepted mobile messages. The security at the first gate insists on a printout of the mail ticket. Busy executives and maiden fliers undergo much hassles and trouble with the security if they show the mobile message. Airline passengers say when they are in a hurry especially in a different city and rushing out to
catch the flight, the printout thing is becoming a botheration. Adding to their woes is the fact that most airport routes are desolate areas where
kiosks or cafes are not available. If by some luck you get one, you should be prepared to deal with a hiccupping system, waste another half hour, and shell out `15-20. “I am a business executive and I keep travelling every alternative day. I had the misfortune of not coming with a printout once and I had to make frantic arrangements with the airline office to give me a printout at the last minute. The security guards refused to hear my case, even though it was perfectly acceptable to get in with an SMS confirmation,” says Ravi Prasad. Blogs are full of passengers’ complaints who wanted the security to accept SMS message.
APSRTC SHOWS THE WAY
The security staff at the airport needs to take a cue from APSRTC that has done away with the printed ticket. So have private bus operators. They all accept the mobile SMS as valid. What then is the lesson learnt? Be on time and stick to the conventions. You may save the world by not using paper, but you will not get there in time if you don’t shed paper to save it in the first place. On enquiry, the PRO at the airport says, “If a person has to enter the airport to board a flight, he needs to have a printout with his flight details and ticket booking confirmation. A message on the phone is not enough to get in.”

Production of passenger vehicles (cars and light vehicles) rose from 74.4 million in 2010 to 76.8 million in 2011 — and 2012 may bring an all-time high of 80 million or more vehicles, according to new research conducted by the Worldwatch Institute. Global sales of passenger vehicles increased from 75.4
million to 78.6 million over the same period, with a projected 81.8 million in 2012, writes report author and Worldwatch senior researcher Michael Renner. The major driver of increased production and sales are the economies, especially China and India. “Rising sales translate into ever-expanding fleets. An estimated 691 million passenger cars were on the world’s roads in 2011. When both light-and heavy-duty trucks are included, the number rises to 979 million vehicles, which was 30 million more than just a year earlier. By the end of 2012, the global fleet could top 1 billion vehicles,” says Michael. Electric vehicle (EV) production remains at barely perceptible levels. Although
Highlights n The passenger vehicle fleet in China grew at an annual average rate of 25 per cent during 2000-11, from fewer than 10 million cars to 73 million cars. n The top four producers of light vehicles — China, USA, Japan, and Germany — together account for more than half of the global output. n Hybrid vehicles are growing in number, but they remain below 2 per cent of the total vehicle output.
several countries have issued targets for future EV fleets, it remains to be seen whether these goals can be met. China, for
instance, wants to put 5 million plug-in hybrid-electric and fully electric vehicles on its roads by 2020 — which could account for more than 40 per cent of the global EV fleets that year. An analysis by Deutsche Bank Climate Advisors, however, suggests that production of 1.1 million EVs and a fleet of 3.5 million in China is a more realistic projection. “Automobiles are major contributors to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions,” said Renner. “Greater fuel efficiency, along with the use of cleaner fuels, can help mitigate these impacts, although increases in the numbers of cars and the distances driven threaten to overwhelm fuel economy advances,” he added.
Deadly facts n Approx. 1.3 million people get killed on roads every year. n 70 per cent of air pollution in Chinese cities is from cars and trucks. n Obesity is linked to high levels of car and truck pollution — diesel busses and trucks are the worst. n Cars pollute the air, water and land. n Cars of China and the USA alone produce close to half of the world’s carbon dioxide.
What should be done? n Drive an electric car. n Drive less. Walk more and gain health. n Start a No Driving Day once a week. n Walk, bike, take the bus or train whenever possible. n Save your petrol-powered car for long trips.

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple on Wednesday introduced a new iPhone 5 with a bigger screen and slimmer body that analysts quickly branded a sure hit for the culture-changing tech giant. Apple chief executive Tim Cook called the launch “the biggest thing to happen to iPhone since the iPhone.” The California company called the iPhone 5 “the thinnest smartphone in the world,” with a glass and aluminium body that is 18 per cent thinner and 20 per cent lighter than iPhone 4S.
Apple also customised a sophisticated mapping program, upgraded its voice-activated assistant known as Siri and more tightly integrated Facebook.
Apple will start taking orders for the phone Friday and begin shipments on September 21 in the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan, and the phone will be available in 100 countries by the end of the year.

The new iPhone has a rich 10-centimetre display prime for the smartphone market, in which screen size is one of the key factors important to buyers. Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller praised the new iPhone as “an absolute jewel.” Apple will start taking orders for the phone Friday and begin shipments on September 21 in the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan, and the phone will be available in 100 countries by the end of the year. UPCC chief faces uphill task
The Congress has faced successive defeats at the hustings for the last 23 years in various parliamentary and Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, that sends the largest number of MPs — 80 — to the Lok Sabha.
W
ill Nirmal Khatri, the littleknown newly appointed Uttar Pradesh state Congress president, be able to turn the fortunes of India’s grand old party and bring it back to reckoning in the country’s most politically consequential state when his more famous predecessors have failed for the last almost quarter of a century? It would seem an uphill task, given the legacy of failures he has inherited. The Congress has faced successive defeats at the hustings for the last 23 years in various parliamentary and Assembly polls in UP, that sends the largest number of MPs — 80 — to the Lok Sabha. While optimists prefer to play safe — “let us see” being the common refrain — most feel that the political battle in the state is “lost for many years to come.” Khatri, 61, who represents Faizabad in Parliament, was appointed to the post late August, replacing Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who had put in her papers after the party’s poor show in the Assembly polls in March when it won just 28 seats —only six more than in 2012.
Poring through the track record of the past state presidents of the UPCC too offers little hope of resurrection. Party loyalists blame the “continuance of bad luck” on poor selections made by the high command. “Never have they chosen a grass root worker; the appointment of state presidents has been largely a matter of loyalty to the leader rather than about ability to take along the worker,” a disappointed Congress worker said. Since the party was swept out of power in the wake of Mandal politics in 1989, the party has seen a dozen state unit presi-

dents. But while most have ended up being Union ministers and governors, the party’s poor run is yet to come to an end. And so it is not surprising that a party which ruled the state till 1989 slipped to become the main Opposition and then sank to the fourth position. When the Congress came into the Opposition, Balram Singh Yadav (1988-89) — a leader from the prominent Yadav belt of Etawah-Mainpuri and a known ‘foe’ of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav — was handed over the reins hoping to keep “itself in the race of Mandal politics.” This, however, did not happen and the party organisation crumbled in the face of caste politics. Yadav went on to become a Union minister. The late Mahabir Prasad, who twice headed the state Congress (1984-1988 and 19911992), also could not create any ripples. The party did not improve but he later had many stints as a Union minister and also as governor of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. ND Tiwari led the state Congress in 1994-1995 and 19971998 but he too failed miserably. With the Brahmin card failing
miserably, Tiwari was eased out after the creation of Uttarakhand and made CM. He later became the AP governor. Salman Khurshid succeeded him (1998-2000) and was made state unit head again in 20042007, but he too failed to whip up the party morale. He ended up being the union minister. Sri Prakash Jaiswal’s (20002002) stint too had nothing to write home about . He, however, went on to become minister of state for home affairs and later a Cabinet minister. The Congress’s dalliance with other leaders too has ended up in a disaster. Jagdambika Pal (2003-2004), now an MP, could not even win his legislative seat in 2007 when Mayawati swept to power. The latest in the long list of state presidents was Rita Bahuguna Joshi. President during 2007-2012, Joshi no doubt succeeded in raising the tempo, but when it came to winning seats the party failed miserably. Observers feel the party needs more than a face (Rahul Gandhi) and frequent changes in the leadership, the organisational structure needs to be rebuilt in the state for any improvement in its fortunes. Red tape hits relief to fishermen
The PDS ration was expected to reach the targeted families by mid-July, but the scheme has hit a roadblock.
O
ver 5000 fishermen families, who were included in the PDS scheme to make up for the loss of livelihood during the ban on fishing for breeding of turtles here, are yet to get the benefits.
The prohibition in past years has resulted in a drastic drop in marine fish production and in economy of the region. The PDS ration was expected to reach the targeted families by mid-July, but the scheme has hit a roadblock. Aware of the loss of livelihood following the sevenmonth prohibition from November 1 to May 31 on fishing
in the sea, the government had earlier announced extension of PDS facilities for the affected fishermen families. “We have identified more than 5,400 families who are entirely dependent on fishing. The identified families are either directly or indirectly affected by turtle conservation measures have been enumerated for PDS benefits,” assistant director of marine fisheries, Paradip, Rabi Narayan Pattnaik said. The department has submitted a list to government agencies so that the affected people could avail of the subsistence package and alternate livelihood programme, he said. “PDS benefits are yet to reach the targeted families, but we are hopeful the scheme will get underway shortly. The affected families are entitled to all PDS benefits including
rice at `2 a kg,” he said. After prohibition was lifted on May 31, fishing is being disrupted due to frequent formation of low pressure. Rough sea has prevented fishing for fortnightlong spells in the past three months. Adding to their woes is dispute between exporters and trawler operators.
“We are pinning hopes that subsidized PDS rice would provide relief during the lean season. We are feeling let down,” said Adikanda Roul, a fisherman. It’s pertinent to note that every year, the state government clamps a 7-month ban on fishing in a 20 km radius from Dhamara
to the mouth of the Devi river. The legal embargo is to ensure the safety of breeding turtles who perish in large number either by getting entangled in fishing nets or by getting hit by propellers of trawlers. The prohibition in past years has resulted in a drastic drop in marine fish production and in economy of the region which is largely regulated by the sea fishing sector, said Tushar Sardar of Orissa Traditional Fish Workers Association. Ancillary sectors like ice-factories and net-making units in the area have closed down. Skilled boat-makers and net weavers from these areas are slowly shifting towards Digha and Vishakhapatnam due to bleak business prospects, he claimed. PTI

WASHINGTON: The United States suspects a deadly attack on a US consulate in Libya was a well-planned assault by militants instead of a rampaging mob, US officials said Wednesday, renewing concerns about the role of extremists in the wake of the Arab Spring. The attackers appear to have used protests over an inflammatory film as a pretext to stage a major assault involving small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades that lasted several hours, overwhelming the security team at the consulate in Benghazi. “That’s the working hypothesis at the moment,” said a senior US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This was a complex attack,” he told AFP. “They seemed to have used this (protest) as an
US must not abandon Arab Spring: Experts WASHINGTON: The Obama administration must stay the course in Arab Spring countries and help them thwart rising militancy, experts said Wednesday, even as the deaths of four diplomats grimly highlighted the dangers lurking in the young democracies. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both vowed to stand by Libya as it emerges from four decades of dictatorship under Moamer Kadhafi, despite the brutal militant attack on the US mission in Benghazi. “The attack will not break the bonds between the United States and Libya,” Obama pledged. opportunity.” The gunmen, who opened fire on the American consulate and kept US security teams at bay for hours, may have had links to Al-Qaeda or been inspired by the terror network, officials said, stressing that investigators needed more time to gather facts. “It is too early to definitively
attribute the attack to Al-Qaeda or its affiliates,” the official said. However, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Rogers, said the attack that killed the US ambassador, Chris Stevens, and three of his staff resembled an Al-Qaeda operation. “There are still some fuzzy details... but clearly it has all the
hallmarks of an Al-Qaeda-style event,” the Republican lawmaker told CNN. Tuesday’s assault came amid a wave of protests in Muslim countries against a US-made amateur Internet film that mocks the Prophet Mohammed. Initial accounts suggested the assault was the result of violent riots but as more details emerged, officials and experts said the evidence pointed to a deliberate plot staged to mark the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. In response to Tuesday’s attack, the United States dispatched two naval destroyers to waters off Libya and deployed a 50-strong counter-terrorism team of US Marines to bolster security at its Tripoli embassy. The United States also has unmanned drone aircraft at its disposal to help Tripoli track militants who may have carried out the attack, officials said. AFP

I
recently finished Mitch Albom’s latest novel The Time Keeper. In true Albom style, the book features God in a starring, if not lead role, as it tells us about the man who created time and his eternal penance for tampering with immortal machinations. Let’s leave God out of this, however, and talk about time itself: the looming shadow across our life. As humans we take time for granted, we look at the sun rise and set but never really see it. The seconds that speed by us, do so like thieves stealing away with the corporeal Grail in the dead of night. We let the minutes pass by because we know that they will be followed by more…and more. Until one day we look up from our routine reverie to find that the decades have passed us by and left in their wake a physical frailty that all the praying in the world can’t change. To those who believe, the end of time signals the beginning of eternity; for those of us who don’t, it signals the coming finality. A darkness so encompassing that all knowledge is swallowed in its maw. Time ends, just like life. It is what we do while the clock still runs that counts, the rest is but a chronological ramble to find a fitting legacy that we leave behind for the generations to come. It is something that parents understand all too well, but a fact that politicians and generals barely fathom. The writer is the editor of Postnoon.

Her reason: “My way of saying make up is my life.” My reason: While this is a very colorful and amazingly artistically done tattoo that makes for a great piece of artwork, the only reason I can think why I would want to get a tattoo like this is either I lost a bet or the tattoo artist got me confused with someone that is cool enough to wear a tattoo like that. The only way a tattoo would be cool on me is if I got the word “COOL” tattooed on me.
Her reason: “So this is a pic of how I see myself in dreams” My reason: Isn’t it obvious why I would get this tattoo? As a dedicated doctor I would get this tattoo for medical reasons. Say it’s late night in the emergency room and sick girl comes in who and is in a lot of pain. In fact she is in so much pain that she can barely talk. So how do I get her to explain to me where it hurts? Well I’m glad you asked, I would show her this tattoo and ask her to point on there where she feels the pain.
If you are feeling inspired but your parents or partner doesn’t want you to get a tattoo let me know and I’ll create the perfect reason for you to get one. Ok I’m going to go look for lost luggage.

T
he US Ambassador to Libya J Christopher Stevens is dead and once again North Africa is on the precipice. When gunmen stormed the US Consulate in Benghazi in a violent backlash to a bizarre anti-Islamic video it conjured images of the Iran hostage Crisis of 1979–81. Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney was quick to paint president Barack Obama as a latter-day Jimmy Carter (a peacenik sans spine). But Obama’s response to the tragedy was quietly powerful. The last thing the world and the region needs right now is US jingoism, a forceful knee-jerk reaction that will rip the sands of Africa asunder. The US must tread carefully, but it must not relinquish its big stick. What will be pivotal is the Egypt and Libyan governments’ reaction to the attacks on the US consulates. If they strongly condemn the actions of the gunmen and do their best to find the killers and bring them to justice, then there’s still hope that the region will not fall prey to fanatics. If not, things could get very ugly, very soon.

GO ON- REVIEW
CLASSIC TV
A make-do sitcom
Go on is not the next big thing on TV. But the show has enough laughs to keep you enter tained. Oh, and there’s Matthew Perry, of course.
Fauji Started in 1988, this was a television series following the training of an Indian Army Commando regiment. The show was aired on DD National. Fauji also saw the rise of a former unknown and now superstar Shah Rukh Khan. The star had essayed the role of Lt Abhimanyu Rai, a role he ended up doing because the director Milin Kapoor, who was to play the main lead chose to remain behind the camera. The series went on to become a tremendous success. The show ran for a total of 13 episodes.

yan King (Matthew Perry) is a recentlywidowed sports-talk radio host who wants to get back to work. But it’s obvious, he hasn’t come to terms with his grief. So his superiors impose one condition — that he attend grief-counselling. Cut to an ensemble of sad misfits and oddballs that are his support group. Their loony-toa-fault, quirks and tics, with malcontent but fun Perry at one end and the killjoy but caring therapist Lauren (Laura Benanti) all trying to get past the loss in their life, contribute for all the gags in the show. Yeah, okay. So it’s not original. But it doesn’t even pretend to be. In fact, its unlikely that you can watch Go On without finding yourself drawing parallels to Community. Or if by a small stretch, even Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management. The types are all there. The overachieving/nerdy Asian, the weird gay/creepy/pervert baldy, the uptight control-freak, the disabled elderly guy, the wimpy fat girl and of course, one with inti-

And Anger Management in part because of the similarities between the actors Charlie Sheen and Matthew Perry. Both known for their impeccable comic timing, incredible screen presence and unbelievable fan following. Both trying, often a tad too hard, to shed the hangovers from the roles of their lives – Charlie Cooper (Two and a Half Men) and Chandler Bing (F.R.I.E.N.D.S). Both, having aged a million years, since we last saw them on screen. And of course, the similarity in plot. But to be sure, Go On is not
It’s unlikely you can watch Go On without drawing parallels to Community. Or even, Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management as funny or likeable as Community nor as desperate as Anger Management. At best, it falls somewhere in between. It lacks the strong support cast that makes Community the show it is. However, on its own, it’s just about enough. Perry’s snarky wit, the group’s loony, quirky, antics evoke enough laughs and is likely to keep you entertained for the duration of the show. Interestingly, the
show also has space for a few scenes when it slows down and allows for a few moments of real insight on individual fears, pains and frustrations that adds that little bit extra to an otherwise frivolous hour. But then, we only have the pilot to judge from. The real question that viewers will be asking is that assuming Ryan can’t be in therapy forever and there’s only so much grieving and mourning that the support group can do, where does the show go on to? The answer might just make all the difference. Until then, Go On might keep you going until the next season of BBT or HIMYM is back. Episodes of Go On are available for download online.

Sudden and unexpected SADS or Sudden Adult Death Syndrome is a condition in which a perfectly healthy person dies suddenly without any known cardiac problem. What is arrythmia?
ANISHAA KUMAR
S
ADS is mainly caused due to the irregular beating of the heart. The pumping action of the heart is said to occur due to electricity that flows through it. An irregularity of flow when it comes to the flow of electricity in the heart is referred to as arrythmia. An ECG helps diagnose these irregularities.

T
he incident left everyone shocked. Raina, a perfectly healthy mother of a one-year-old boy, suddenly passed away in her sleep. Raina and her family had only a few days ago celebrated the first birthday of her son. She was rushed to the hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead. Doctors were unable to find a cause. It was ultimately declared that Raina had been a victim of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, commonly referred to as SADS. Sudden Adult Death Syndrome implies a series of unknown causes that result in sudden deaths. This could include heart ailments, medicinal reactions and other causes. SADS is mostly used to refer to Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome, which is a collective term for a group of cardiac problems that may cause sudden death. Dr Manoj Kumar Agarwala, cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, explains, “When a person with no heart problems experiences an increase in the heart beat and does not reach hospital on time, sudden death may occur.”
CAUSES
The causes may be sudden heart attack or a congenital heart problem such as hypertrophic
Displacia and atherosclerosis (thickening of the arteries) may also be causes.
SYMPTOMS
About the symptoms, Dr Manoj says, “A person suffering from these problems may suffer from palpitations, sweating and giddiness. These symptoms may also be associated with anxietyrelated problems. So, it is better that they check with their doctors as they will be able to give a correct diagnosis.”
PROMINENCE
cardiomyopathy (thickening of the heart’s muscles) or an electrical abnormality in the heart, says Dr Agarwala. Most of the problems that
may cause SADS are related to irregularities in the QT interval. The QT interval refers to the time between the Q and T wave in the electrical cycle of the heart
(as seen in an ECG). They may include conditions such as Long QT Syndrome, Brugada Syndrome and Short QT Syndrome.
According to Dr Manoj, SADS is not very common. The main problem is with people not reaching the hospital on time. While testing is not that commonly done in the young, people with a past history of cardiac problems or a family history of someone passing away due to SADS, should get themselves tested. Genetic testing is available for various ailments that may be related to SADS.

This was later on named by his colleague Emil Kraepelin as Alzheimer’s disease.

HEART ATTACKS
Doctor’s corner Dr Divya T Sudarshan
Doctor can provide a safer solution I recently saw an ad in a leading daily promoting a vaginal tightening cream. How do these creams really work and are they safe? Who can use them? henever we feel that a patient requires some hormonal help, we do a routine vaginal and breast examination, then we do a pap smear. If that is okay, then the patient is prescribed a vaginal cream, patches to be used twice weekly or less for a period of six months. If you are young, and have a loose vagina due to birth injuries, then no cream will help. Meet your doctor and get it repaired! You will save yourself a lot of complications! The advertisements for vaginal creams which come in dubious midnight commercials need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Most of these contain harsh chemical ingredients, petrochemicals, endocrine disruptors, or irritants to which you may have a sensitivity, such as alcohol, parabens, or propyleneglycol. They act as vaginal moisturisers, reducing dryness, giving the sense of plumpness. There are suppositories with Vitamin E, astroglide, and natural oils which are available for vaginal smoothness, whether that smoothness gives one the desired result of vaginal tightening is the big question! I sometimes feel magazines should take responsibility for their advertisements because there are a millions who believe them and spend money too! Sometimes, women try out wonder drugs more to please the opposite sex, and we need to understand the limits of safety, even in cosmetic use. So before you fall prey to dubious commercials, meet a doctor. She would probably give you something safer with better results!

Painkillers could kill MI survivors early Researchers concluded that certain painkillers can elevate chances of an early death among heart attack survivors.
LONDON: Popular painkillers such as ibuprofen can elevate chances of an early death among heart attack (MI) survivors, suggests a study. Some of these drugs, available over the counter, can make the blood clot more easily and trigger heart attacks or strokes. There is the perception among researchers that such drugs should not be made so easily available on prescription. Researchers from Copenhagen University Hospital, Demark, led by AnneMarie Schjerning Olsen, drew their conclusions after looking
Some of these drugs, available OTC , can make the blood clot more easily and trigger heart attacks or strokes. at death rates in more than 1,00,000 people who had suffered one heart attack, the journal Circulation reported. Almost half of them or 44 per cent were subsequently put on a group of painkillers collectively known as non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory inhibitor or NSAIDs, according to the Telegraph. Olsen said: "It is important to get the message out to clinicians taking care of patients with cardiovascular disease that NSAIDs are harmful, even several years after a heart attack." These all work in a similar way, and include ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac. At the end of the first year after a heart attack, those who had received at least one NSAID prescription were 59 per cent more likely to have died of any cause, than those who did
not take them. After five years, this mortality difference persisted — in fact the gap had grown to 64 per cent. It is likely those prescribed NSAIDs were less healthy than the others, and so more likely to die sooner. Researchers, adjusting for health differences as well as other factors including age, sex, income, and the year they were hospitalised for their heart attack, concluded that NSAIDs were most probably causing heart attack survivors to die earlier. KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

rom a model to a popular Bollywood star, Bipasha Basu's journey hasn't been one without her share of ups and downs. But she has taken every experience in her stride and says she has emerged as an evolved person. "Today, I am a refined actor, lived a little more life, have seen a lot, handled situations, not just a relationship, careerwise I have fallen down, come up again. I have had my run of relationship crisis, staying away from my parents for a long time, loans to pay at times I didn't know how to pay," Bipasha said. The 33-year-old made her Bollywood debut in 2001 with Ajnabee. She was dating Dino Morea that time, but parted ways with him in 2002. Then she became romantically involved with her Raaz co-star John Abraham, whom she dated for around eight years. Professionally, her career picked up with films like No Entry, Dhoom, Corporate and Bachna Ae Haseeno. Her latest release Raaz 3 received a good opening, and Bipasha is happy the way life has shaped up for her. "From 1997 to 2012, I've lived a wholesome life, moved from one room to one BHK (bedroom, hall, kitchen) to two BHK sharing with a friend. Then bought a car, but didn't know how to drive and also couldn't afford a driver. "Finally, my friends ended up driving, so I realised there was no point of buying a car. I had a very broken life, yes sometimes broken down, sometimes very strong, so I feel I am a very evolved human being right now," she added. For now, Bipasha awaits the launch of her second fitness DVD, and her debut international project Singularity, will hit the screens early next year. IANS

HILLSBOROUGH TRAGEDY: THE TRUTH
After 23 years, Hillsborough truth finally sees light of day Over two decades after 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death in Hillsborough during a game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup semifinal, documents relating to the disaster have been released to the Press and public. What emerged was a tale of gross police incompetence and facts that the tragedy could have been averted. Summary of the findings
DAVID TRIFUNOV Global Post LONDON: British Prime Minister David Cameron apologised today to families of soccer fans killed 23 years ago during the infamous Hillsborough disaster.

The number of Liverpool fans that were killed in the ‘crush’
450,000 The number of pages of documents including reports, minutes of meetings, transcripts, etc
85
The number of contributors including government departments, the police, the coroner and the emergency services.
It was Britain’s worst sporting disaster when – on April 15, 1989 – 96 spectators died in a crush of humanity during a game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup semifinal. The Hillsborough stadium terraces were overcrowded, and many victims suffocated as fans pushed forward. “I want to be very clear about the view the government takes about these findings and why after 23 years this matters so much, not just for the families but for Liverpool and for our country as a whole,” Cameron said. “What happened that day – and since – was wrong.” The apology comes as a new report into the incident and reaction is published. After scrutinizing 450,000 pages and reopening old documents, the Hillsborough Independent Panel cast doubt on police and emergency services handling of the tragedy, CNN reported.
MacKenzie apologises for ‘The Truth’ The editor of Rupert Murdoch’s British tabloid The Sun at the time of the Hillsborough football stadium disaster apologised for running a story 23 years ago that blamed fans for the tragedy. Kelvin MacKenzie said he had been “totally misled” into running a frontpage story with the headline ‘The Truth’, together with false claims that supporters picked the pockets of victims and urinated on police. “Today I offer my profuse apologies to the people of Liverpool for that headline,” he said in a statement issued hours after an independent panel published a report revealing a huge police cover-up of the tragedy.
The Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Reverend James Jones, chaired the panel. He said he hopes “greater transparency will bring to the families and the wider public a greater understanding of the tragedy and its aftermath,” according to CNN. “It is only with this transparency that the families and survivors, who have behaved with such dignity, can with some sense of truth and justice cherish the memory of their 96 loved ones,” the bishop said. The report concluded that
police tried to blame drunk and unruly fans for the disaster, BBC said. South Yorkshire Police altered reports and spread rumors and accusations through the press. The report also suggested ambulance teams didn’t enact a disaster response plan. Trevor Hicks lost two daughters at Hillsborough and said the families are still pressing for “accountability,” BBC reported. “The truth is out today, justice starts tomorrow,” he said, according to BBC.
n Some 116 of the 164 statements identified for substantive amendment were amended to remove or alter comments unfavourable to SYP (South Yorkshire Police) n SYP sought to develop and publicise a version of events that focused on several police officers’ allegations of drunkenness, ticketlessness and violence among a large number of Liverpool fans’ n No evidence to support these allegations other than a few isolated examples... clearly reflecting frustration and desperation n No evidence to verify allegations of exceptional drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans n No evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium and force entry and no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying n Alcohol consumption was “not exceptional for a social or leisure occasion” n The safety of the crowd admitted to the terrace was compromised at every level n Among the failings were inadequate turnstiles, the management of the crowd by the police and stewards, the construction of the pens, lack of precise monitoring of crowd capacity within the pens n The risks were known and the crush in 1989 was foreseeable n Consequences of opening exit gates to relieve congestion at the turnstiles had not been realised n Delay in recognising that there were mass casualties; major incident plan not correctly activated n Rescue and recovery efforts were affected by lack of leadership, coordination, prioritisation of casualties and equipment n Panel found that some fans, “partially asphyxiated, survived for a significant period”. Up to 41 lives could potentially have been saved if they had been treated earlier, though it is not clear if any one individual “would or could have survived under different circumstances”

his year’s list of Arjuna awardees had a name which stood out; it was Samir Suhag. There was nothing “out of place” with regards to the name. The uniqueness was with regards to the sport he played — polo. It was after 25 years that a polo player was presented with the Arjuna award for his exploits in the game. While winning the award did not come surprise Samir, he certainly did not anticipate winning it this year as much as he had last year. “We anticipated that I would receive the award last year but it did not surprise us that it happened this year instead. The feeling is yet to completely sink in,” said Samir. A +5 handicap player, Samir is currently in the city for the Hyderabad Polo season. Before taking up polo, he used to play golf and tennis. His tryst with the game began when he used to watch his father play polo for the army. “It was after my 12th [standard] that I started playing the

sponsors and but the 2004 world economic crisis saw many sponsors pull out,” rues Samir. “But this situation is improving now.” On asked if, polo being a costly game, was proving to be a hindrance for many in pursuing
the sport, Samir begged to differ. “Nowadays, many clubs like the Bison Polo and Riding Club, provide horse riding sessions at subsidized rates. When these facilities are compared to those provided for sports like golf, it is certainly much lesser and also affordable. Rearing horses can be a costly affair but not otherwise.” Polo is more prevalent in places like Jaipur and Jodhpur when in comparison to a city like Hyderabad. But this does not deter the his hopes of bridging the gap and seeing the game reach greater altitudes as he believes that the country has its fair share of talent which needs to be tapped. In his endeavor to do his bit, Samir coaches whenever possible and also hopes to open an academy in the near future as this is his way of giving back to the sport. On the family front, Samir and wife Preeti have been blessed with two kids — daughter Sanya and son Yash. While 14 year-old Sanya has begun taking lessons in horse riding, it remains to be seen if little Yash follows his father’s footsteps or not.

DAVIS CUP
Spain wary of US threat
The Americans have lost the last two ties between the countries and are without the recently-retired Andy Roddick, who has been his country’s mainstay. ALLAN KELLY Agencie France-Presse PARIS: The twin towers of John Isner and Sam Querrey, allied to the Bryan twins, Mike and Bob, in the doubles will give US coach Jim Courier hope that the United States can upset holders Spain in the Davis Cup semifinals in Gijon this weekend. The other semi-final takes place in Buenos Aires with Juan Martin del Potro an injury doubt for Argentina against the Czech Republic. Under the captaincy of Grand Slam winner Courier, they have chalked up back-toback away wins in Switzerland (5-0), where Isner shocked Roger Federer, and France (3-2) where he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the decisive rubber. Courier believes the US bandwagon can claim another scalp. “It’s the ultimate ask, going into Spain and playing them on red clay, where they haven’t lost in a long time,” he said in New York during the US Open. “We certainly aren’t the favourites and we felt that way in the first two matches as well. We’ve had the toughest draw you can have in Davis Cup.
Federer in Swiss Davis Cup team LAUSANNE: Roger Federer will return to the Swiss lineup for the World Group playoff tie against the Netherlands. There had been some doubts over his participation following his US Open quarter-final loss to Berdych, but the Swiss Tennis Federation confirmed on Wednesday that he would join Stanislas Wawrinka. The Dutch will host the tie in Amsterdam and will be led by Robin Haase and Thiemo de Bakker. Bryan twins, Mike and Bob

let’s make this the greatest road season in modern Davis Cup history.” Easing the task on hand for the Americans is the fact that
Spain will have to do without star turn Rafael Nadal who continues to rest his troublesome knees on the injury sidelines. Nadal on clay would have represented a near-certain two points for the hosts, leaving the Americans needing to win the three remaining rubbers. As it is they still have to defeat two of the finest claycourters in world tennis in the shape of world No 5 David Ferrer and No 12 Nicolas Almagro. Ferrer in particular has been in fine form of late.

Tseng seeks Open hat-trick ELSPETH BURNSIDE Agencie France-Presse HOYLAKE: Taiwan’s Yani Tseng has her sights set on making history on Thursday when she begins an attempt to win the Women’s British Open for a third year in a row at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. At just 23, Tseng has dominated women’s golf for the past couple of seasons, winning five majors and reigning supreme at the head of the world rankings. However, this summer, she has suffered a bit of a setback, missing a few cuts, including the Evian Masters in France. But she admitted she has gained inspiration from the men’s world No 1, Rory McIlroy. “He also struggled for a couple of months so I watched his interviews and I have learned a lot from him,” she said. “He said he got back to enjoying and focusing on his own game. “He also said he had to remember how he loved the game as a kid. That’s the same with me. We are both living the dream so there is no reason to become stressed on the golf course. “This year I have been too hard on myself. I need to enjoy myself on the course again and that’s what I’m going to do this week.”

Buttler serves up emphatic England win Buttler scored heavily off Parnell in the 9th over of the 11-overs match. JULIAN GUYER Agencie France-Presse BIRMINGHAM: Jos Buttler’s (right) quickfire 32 not out provided the platform for England to beat South Africa by 28 runs in the third and final Twenty20 international at Edgbaston on Wednesday. Victory saw World Twenty20 champions England, who head to Sri Lanka on Thursday to defend the title they won in the Caribbean two years ago, square this three-match series at 1-1 with one no result. Most of Buttler’s runs, in a match reduced by rain to 11 overs per side, came in a costly ninth over worth 32 from leftarm quick Wayne Parnell. It was the second most expensive over in Twenty20 international history after Yuvraj Singh struck England captain Stuart Broad for 36 runs made up of six sixes in Durban during the inaugural 2007 World Twenty20. LIGUE 1 PREVIEW
PSG, Montpellier look to lift game ANDY SCOTT Agencie France-Presse PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain and Montpellier will both be looking for lifts ahead of the start of their Champions League campaigns when they return to Ligue 1 action on Friday after the international break. PSG put their slow start to the season behind them with a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired 2-1 win at Lille in their last outing a fortnight ago in a game that acted as a warning to the rest of
32
the country. However, the capital giants are still six points adrift of bitter rivals, and early Ligue 1 leaders, Marseille, so French international winger Jeremy Menez (left) knows what is required as an unbeaten Toulouse side head to the Parc des Princes. “Our start to the season means we have little margin for error,” admits Menez, who was a late substitute in France’s 3-1 home win against Belarus in a World Cup qualifier in midweek. We are not especially feeling the pressure because we
know we’ll have to deal with it all year,” he added. “We have dropped points, which is annoying, but we have the means to come back. “We want to win Ligue 1 and go far in the Champions League.” Brazil defender Thiago Silva is unlikely to make his debut yet, and PSG, who entertain Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday, will again look to Sweden captain Ibrahimovic to lead from the front against opponents who are traditionally difficult to break down.
Squad delay gives hope of recall JULIAN GUYER Agencie France-Presse BIRMINGHAM: Kevin Pietersen could resume his England career during the tour of India after the England and Wales Cricket B o a r d (ECB) confirmed that Thursday’s planned squad announcement had been put back until Tuesday at the earliest. Pietersen, Englan-d’s most talented batsman, remains in international exile following a series of flare-ups that led to him being dropped following the drawn second Test with South Africa at Headingley last month. He’s not in the squad that will defend their World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka later this month, despite being man of the tournament when the team won in the Caribbean two years ago, and there had been speculation he would also be omitted from the four-Test tour of India starting in November.
WORLD T20
West Indies wary of favourites tag COLOMBO: It is not often in recent years that the West Indies have been billed as favourites to win a major cricket title, but skipper Darren Sammy is cautious of the tag ahead of the World Twenty20. “The favourite tag line does not guarantee us a place in the final,” Sammy said ahead of the tournament. “You have to go out there and play good cricket. We may have the best side on paper, but we have to pull all the resources together and win.” The West Indies have struggled to match their overwhelming success of the 1970s and 1980s when their fast bowlers and aggressive batsmen dominated world cricket.
