MAMMON JAI HO!

The ever present charade of political protests comes with a price tag, Postnoon finds out. RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com

RATE CARD

FOR REPRESENTATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY

Here are a few going rates for various parties:

I

n this day and age, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Even ideals and principles require dough to drive them. Being politically active can mean different things to different people. To the ‘proletariat’, it means a chance for ‘redistribution of wealth’ in the form of ‘gift money’. And, democratic protests are one way to solve unemployment, albeit temporarily. The current political scenario is crowd-driven, which provides temporary employment and the chance to gratefully accept what is commonly termed as ‘gift money’ or chai pani kharcha. For starters, a strong crowd presence is always required for a successful political rally/meeting/campaign. Not counting the self-righteous, morally-driven ones who happen to be a minority in the current scenario. Postnoon takes a look at the many ways of enjoying the perks of democracy. That various political parties

An eco-friendly party —

and student organisations fund their party activists is common knowledge. But there are many levels to this scheme. For instance, a part-time protester who is required to wilt in the sun, wave banners, and give a few throaty slogans for his/her leader is paid a minimum of `100 plus other ‘perks’. Mani Krishna, a student leader from Osmania University says, “For bike rallies and elec-

tion campaigns, the incentives offered range from petrol allowances to the more expensive nazranas like sarees, television sets and even gold earrings. Plus a bonus — a chance of appearing on TV and making good contacts with the local leaders for future benefits.” The most liberal among the parties is the one recently sprung up. Crowds are mobilised with a handsome `200-300 per day, a

quarter bottle to keep up spirits, and a pack of biryani. “They are quite secular and generous in their payments,” remarked a ‘protester’ who is a fixture in Indira Park. For the semi-rural and rural crowds that are roped in for headline-making processions, they are provided with food, lodging and the standard monetary allowance. Other parties too fund their activists but not on such a gener-

ous scale. The going rates with other regional parties are more or less the same, with each member being paid `100-150 for a day’s work. Petrol allowances are provided for those in bike rallies. Shiva Yadav, a local leader in Somajiguda, says, “The perks handed out depend on the level of dedication shown and not always in the regular fashion. Some organisations take their own share of benefits from shutting down educational institutions. Handsome rewards are handed to those who can mobilise a crowd of 30 on the spot for any rally or protest. The chai pani kharcha is anywhere from `100 to `300, depending on the party in question.” It is heard that the only parties not to indulge in this business are a separatist party and another floated by a civil society activist. Santosh M, an activist from Kukatpally, says, “Some parties do not encourage these activities as their very agenda is against such things. Which is why people flock to other party meetings but not to the ones that are self-righteous about their policies.”

Petrol thieves strike at Chikkadpally Residents despair as they find their bikes drained of petrol and spark plugs missing. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

esidents of Bapunagar in Chikkadpally have been waking up in the morning to find their vehicles drained of petrol. This is followed by spark plugs being stolen from their vehicles, mostly two-wheelers. Residents allege that ever since street lights failed in and around Market yard area of Bapunagar, theft of fuel and parts from vehicles has become a common occurrence. They hint that an organised gang may be behind this wave of vandalism. Sanjay Das, a resident of Bapunagar, said, “The street lights stopped functioning here over three months ago. No one

Often, we wake up in the morning to find our petrol fuel pipes broken and tanks drained.” Rajaram, a vendor in the area, alleged that scores of youngsters from nearby slums gather in Market yard at night. “They regularly drink in Market yard and

act out on our vehicles. While some vandalise seats and steal spark plugs, others steal petrol from our bikes,” he said. The Chikkadpally police

feign ignorance over this matter. Sub-inspector H Prabhakar said, “We have not received any complaint so far regarding this matter. The Market yard area is usu-

ally locked after 10pm and we patrol the area too. However, we will look into this matter and take action.” It is to be noted that Market yard has been notorious for gudumba (hooch) hoarding and dealing and has been the hub of many excise department raids. Authorities at the electrical wing of the GHMC claim to be unaware of the malfunctioning street lights. “We have never received any complaint from residents of Bapunagar. Now that it has been brought to our notice, we will repair the street lights,” said an official from the central zone wing. Though seemingly unaware of the problems, officials are regular in collecting maintenance and donations during festivals, say residents.

I-DAY RESOLVE

MGBS to get a facelift

Every year the Freedom Under Construction group constructs toilets and classrooms for government schools. But this year they are doing something different by cleaning up the bus station. SUDESHNA KOKA sudeshna.k@postnoon.com

“W

ith great p o w e r comes great responsibility.” And we have the power of freedom. This was perhaps one of the most trending dialogue when Spiderman was released a few years back. Giving this quote a tangible form are the volunteers of Freedom Under Construction, who for the last six years have been constructing toilets and classrooms for government schools on the occasion of Independence and Republic day. “These days are not just national holidays. We need to realise our responsibility towards the freedom that we have. Hence, as an act of nation building, we have taken up this responsibly of mobilising citizens to do something for the society,” said Mujeeb Khan, director of Bhumi Foundation. However, this year Freedom Under Construction is doing something different. They are going to clean the Imlibun bus station and paint a few parts of the bus stop with messages and quotes. Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) was earlier known as Imlibun and is one of

the two terminal points in Hyderabad for long distance buses. MGBS covers 30 acres with 74 platforms for incoming and outgoing buses, a waiting hall of 7,380 square metres and a shopping complex of 3,455 square metres apart from a 5,000 square metre area for private parking. One of the oldest and busiest bus stations in Hyderabad, MGBS is in a sorry state thanks to lax maintenance. Volunteers of Freedom Under Construction have taken up the responsibility of sprucing up the bus station on August 15 this year. “It’s important that individuals understand the importance of freedom and how one can uphold and expand freedom. We need to realise how our presence can make a difference and what we can do in our daily life too to change society. This is the best way to start,” said Mujeeb. As part of their Independence Day celebrations, the volunteers launched the

This 10-day long mobilisation walk has covered areas like Ghatkesar, Keesaragutta, Shamirpet, Miyapur, Ameerpet and a few more. The volunteers have already covered 200 kilometres in the last eight days. The walk is aimed at creating social responsibility among citizens. The volunteers have spoken to students, drivers, vendors and basically people from all walks of life on topics like what freedom means to them and what they do to improve society. The foundation hopes to trigger a sense of responsibility

among citizens towards creating a better society. Some of the responses they received, they say, were inspiring. “A guy who mends punctured tyres told me that doing his work on time so that those who depend on him can get to work on time is honesty. It’s amazing how this guy values his time and other people’s time. Most people are doing their bit but they need to take ownership of society. Through this walk they will do something and it will be a start of a greater revolution,” said Nomaan Ahmed, volunteer, who has been walking since the last eight days. The group will organise a 10k walk from Necklace Road on August 14 at 8pm. The group will head towards MGBS and the cleanliness drive will begin from midnight on August 15. Following this the group will paint the walls of the MGBS with messages and quotes.

A

ndhra Pradesh will soon have a comprehensive database of livestock in the State. The State has decided to launch the 19th Quinquennial Livestock Census-2012 from September 15. The census will be held for one month across the State. It is being conducted as part of All India programme by the Animal Husbandry Department following instructions by the Union government. The census will provide the latest data on cattle, poultry and implements and also on certain relevant particulars such as the availability of veterinary services and infrastructural services in the villages. As per the orders, the census process involving a series of steps will continue till July next year (2013) when the final report of the census will be published. The State’s 18th livestock census was conducted in the year 2007. The director of animal

Union minister for rural development, drinking water and sanitation, Jairam Ramesh, in a letter to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, informed that the proposals from the State government to be taken up under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana have been recommended for approval by the empowered committee in its meeting held on July 26 this year. The districts where the road works will be taken up are Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, Warangal and Adilabad. The minister informed the CM that he was glad that the recommendations of the committee have been accepted. The minister said that while recommending the proposals, the committee has advised the State to strengthen the second tier of quality assurance by way of inspection. NSS

In Hyderabad, GHMC Commissioner MT Krishna Babu has been designated as the livestock census officer. Speaking on the issue, additional director (planning) animal husbandry department,

Dr Somasekharam said that the entire census process requires about 35,000 enumerators to undertake the activity across 23 districts of the State and added that the since the department does not have adequate number of employees, the appointment of enumerators will be outsourced. “It’s an enormous responsibility. We have geared up to undertake the census as per the directions of the State government,” he said. He further informed that this year’s census will be held for a month long period. This is a drastic shift from the established practice of 15 days in the past. “Earlier, there were complaints that the census was not being done comprehensively. To avoid any such complaint, the government has decided to hold it for one month,” he said. The additional director added it was likely that total number of livestock would have gone up by five per cent in the last five years.

On Monday, barring Geeta Reddy, no other minister under notice was seen in the offices leading to the cancellation of their pubic visiting hours

Economy of Olympics: Lessons Rio holds for Hyderabad PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com

A CLEAN AND GREEN CITY

W

hat does Rio de Janeiro ring in your mind? To most, it is the world’s hotspot for billionaires, bullies, bunnies and dope. All this is true, but there is another alluring side to Rio. It has been the world’s most acclaimed event venue where the first Earth Summit (1992) was organised and a series of global green issues got discussed and thrashed out since. The Earth Summit, 1992, gave Rio its first global exposure. Earth Summit, or world summit on sustainable development, is a UN global conference. It was a set-up to find ways to halt the destruction of irreplaceable natural resources and tackle pollution of the planet. Rio+20, which means 20 years from its first hosting of the UN-sponsored Earth Summit in 1992, added another feather to the Brazilian cap. What made Rio the most sought-after city for prestigious events, despite its sleazy record of crime and prostitution? Simply this: (1) A determined, patriotic leadership. (2) Strengthening its sports infrastructure. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva cried in delight while announcing the awarding of hosting Olympics

I

n view of the 2016 Olympics, Brazil has brought in a solid waste policy to rid the country of solid waste and toxic waste problem. Rio has 93 municipalities and all of them will do away with garbage dumps. Says Nabil Bonduki, secretary of water resources and urban environments for the ministry of the environment: “It will take at least four years for this law to have an effect.” When the world salutes Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and leaves, the city will have an excellent set up, permanent for its use.

RIO OLYMPICS

2016. Pele, the greatest footballer, was there to celebrate. Rest all reasons are peripheral. The city has given utmost importance to sports infrastructure though it is also the hub of casinos and crime. Its sports stadium can hold 45,000. In 2008, Brazil won 8 medals but in 2012, its tally shot up to 17.

Money matters; it all generates business H

osting the Olympic Games can change the fortunes of a city and the country. Foremost will be its global ticket as the top destination. But other benefits are stupendous. There are long-term and short-term benefits, economists say. The short-term benefits include the cash flow from visitors like officials, athletes, training activities, media activities, cultural events linked to the Olympics. Long term benefits are far more attractive. n It creates permanent infrastructure. n The media image makeover. n Setting up of permanent educational/training institutions. n Tremendous job creation, the entire young population benefits one way or another. n Boost to travel and tourism.

TAKE RIO’S OLYMPIC SCHEME: The games will be held in four zones with varying socio-economic characteristics: n Barra, the heart of the games, is an expanding area of Rio de Janeiro that will require “considerable infrastructure and accommodation development”. It will house the Olympic and media villages and some venues. n Copacabana, a world-famous beach and major tourist attraction, will host the outdoor sports in temporary venues. n Maracana, the most densely populated of the zones, will contain an athletic stadium and the Maracana Stadium, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies. Major redevelopment is planned for the zone.

2016 WHAT HYDERABAD CAN LEARN

H

yderabad has been brave enough to peel away its image of a backward city by building a new façade to it and bravely calling it Hitec city. And, Hyderabad's USP has been its HICC, which happens to be a world-class venue for the magnitude of October CBD 2012. And yet, the GHMC's laidback approach has pulled the city back by another decade. The municipal corporation fails to have laid major corner stones that lead to a world-class city. n Waste management n Sports infrastructure n Planned, even growth of all its areas (Look how Rio de Janeiro has planned Olympics in four zones) All this and much more Hyderabad can learn from Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic strategy.

most of the small designers who could not afford a store. The concept was first of its kind in South India and later followed in other cities like Bangalore and Chennai. “The initial challenge was to convince and bring designers on board. The founders had to pump in personal money for operations till the business got operational break-even in 2010 because of the thin margins. The business had invested more than `1 crore over time on various needs like leasing the property, copyrights of designer products and manufacturing. The other challenge was to raise loans for working capital. Despite the reputation that we gained in last six years, banks are not ready to offer loans without a collateral security,” said Satya Prakash. “We had tie-ups with around 600 designers and sell at least products of 90 designers at any given point of time. We have started designing and manufacturing of own products like apparels, mugs, handbags and souvenirs. We are also promoting the products that reflect brand Hyderabad from local

INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE CAPITAL CULTURE

EDUCATION

Learning on the move The learning centre is cutting the gap between streets and schools for underprivileged kids

Putting tradition above fashion Forsaking the turban is tantamount to a rejection of the Sikh way of life.

AMRITSAR: The evening turban-tying class in the Sikh-dominated Indian city of Amritsar is packed with pre-teen boys learning a centuries-old tradition — that religious leaders fear is under threat. Over the next 90 minutes, the instructors unfurl long strips of cloth in vibrant hues from indigo to burgundy, and proceed to knot, pleat and finally tie them carefully around the boys' heads. The most visible symbol of Sikh pride and identity, the turban is an eight-metre (26foot) piece of cloth, used by Sikh men to manage the long hair which their religion forbids them from cutting. But in India, young Sikh men are increasingly putting fashion before tradition — cutting their hair short and shunning the turban completely. It has also been abandoned by many members of the sizeable Sikh diaspora in countries like the United States, where

Sikhs have been attacked over the mistaken belief that the turban marks them as Muslim extremists. Such a motive has been suggested for the recent killings at a Sikh temple in the US state of Wisconsin where a gunman — with alleged white supremacist links — gunned down six worshippers. Sikh boys are expected to tie and wear the turban by the time they reach adolescence, and 12-year-old Upneet Singh began attending the "turban clinic", as the classes in Amritsar are popularly known,

about two weeks ago. "I go to a religious school where the turban is compulsory at my age, so I come here to learn how to tie it," he says. It is so important that observant Sikhs in the Indian military wear them instead of helmets even in frontline combat situations. For religious leaders such as Avtar Singh, president of the trust that runs Sikhdom's holiest shrine, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, forsaking the turban is tantamount to a rejection of the Sikh way of life. "The turban is the Sikh identity, it is a sign of our selfrespect, our pride," the bearded 71-year-old told AFP at his offices near the temple. “No Sikh is complete without his turban,” insisted Singh, who blames increasing exposure to western influences for undermining religious traditions among India’s 20 millionplus Sikhs. NEW DELHI: Raja Kumar, 13, hadn't dreamt he would ever go to school. He lived on Delhi's streets, rummaging through garbage for a living and playing with other street kids. Today the boy has got admission in a government school — thanks to a mobile learning centre. Kumar, a resident of a slum in Okhla area here, received basic elementary education at the mobile centre launched last month by Save the Children to educate street and slum children. "My father is the only earning member. In a family of five siblings, we just survive. I have to do my bit to support my family," Kumar told IANS at the New Sanjay Camp near Okhla in south Delhi. "I was lucky to get a chance to study... I don't think I ever could have. "I am getting a sense of direction towards further studies and employment," Kumar added. His gleaming eyes now carry the hope of a better and secured life. Like him other children from similar background are looking towards a better future by joining this mobile learning centre. Housed in a gleaming, swanky yellow bus, the learning centre is bridging the gap between streets and schools for children usually found ragpicking or begging. It equips children with preparatory and elementary education. The school may be on wheels but everything in the classroom is conventional-- roll call, attendance register and teachers. To keep the children hooked to studies, the bus is

equipped with graphical story books, LCD television, cushioned couches and wooden cupboards. Over the last two weeks, the centre has seen an increase in attendance — from 38 to 53 children. Keeping their economic compulsions in mind, the school allows the kids to continue ragpicking or selling

They study whenever they have time. After educating children in the New Sanjay Camp, Kabadi Camp and Sonia Gandhi Camp slum clusters, the mobile centre is set to help other children living at Kalkaji Temple, Nehru Place and Tuqlakabad Railway Station. Delhi is home to over 50,000 street children, according to civil society estimates. "The idea is to get these kids admitted in municipal primary schools after some preparatory education at our centre," Zahir Elias, the project coordinator, told IANS. Police confirmed that 41-year-old constable Brian Bachmann and an unidentified civilian male were killed. The shooting occurred around 12.45 pm. A resident of the area said he heard about 30 gunshots. CNN said the entire ordeal lasted around 15 minutes. Another police officer was shot in the leg and a woman civilian was also shot and injured. Western diplomats lose faith in SNC US, UK and France are seeking to cultivate more direct links with internal Syrian groups. DAMASCUS: The US, Britain and France are scrambling to retain their influence with Syrian opposition groups amid fears that most support from the Gulf states has been diverted towards extremist Islamic groups, reported The Guardian. Rising concern that an increasingly sectarian civil war could spread across the region, combined with reports of brutality by some opposition groups, and evidence that the best-organised and best-funded rebel groups are disproportionately Salafist (militant Sunni fundamentalists), has triggered an urgent policy change in western capitals. Washington, London and Paris now agree that efforts to encourage a unified opposition around the exile-led Syrian National Council (SNC) have failed, and are now seeking to cultivate more direct links with internal Syrian groups. Ausama Monajed, a Britishbased SNC member, conceded: “The SNC could have done a better job, a more effective job, in organising the forms on the ground, and now the key issue is to bring fighting groups together in some other framework. But that does not mean that the SNC will be sidelined altogether. It is still the biggest political grouping and has a political and diplomatic role to play.” Hillary Clinton, the US sec-

n the vast rolling plains of Salkhit, 45 miles outside the capital of Ulan Bator, a work crew are busy bending large metal cables into an elaborate, squat structure. Once complete, and with a turbine the length of a football field inserted into the top, it will form a key part of the first wind farm to operate in this coal-rich but infrastructure-poor Asian country. Over the next month, 31 wind turbines will go into operation across this isolated site, supplying an impressive 5 percent of the nation’s current power needs. More importantly, those involved are hoping it will kick-start a clean energy revolution in a country in dire need of non-polluting energy sources. “We have a vision to transform Mongolia into a clean energy powerhouse of Asia,” says Bayanjargal Byambasaikhan, CEO of Newcom Group, the company behind the project. Mongolia actually has all of the natural advantages that could make it one of the key sources of clean energy in the world: high plateaus with constant winds; vast, sparsely inhabited plains that could be developed without too much disruption to traditional herder’s lives; and strong sunlight even in the bleak winter months. In Mongolia you have large expenses of land, you've got more than 300 days per annum of sunlight and fairly constant wind. So it’s got basically the perfect trifecta for renewable energy in the world,” says Neal Detert, an American project manager at Clean Energy LLC in Mongolia. The problem is that Mongolia’s past, present, and future are indelibly tied to coal. The black carbon fuel drives the economy and is the country’s major export. GLOBAL POST

We’re all Huma Abedins FRANKLY SPEAKING

Amina Chaudary

T

he ironic outcome of Michelle Bachman’s improbable concern regarding links between Clinton aide Human Abedin and the Muslim Brotherhood is the vociferous bipartisan support she has generated against her accusations. Senator John McCain and House Majority Rep. John Boehner, among others, have come out in support of Abedin. McCain went so far as to call the attack “unwarranted and unfounded.” While Abedin’s credentials and visibility have afforded her support from all corners of Washington, the guilt-by-association tactics come at a serious price. They create a baseless and unfounded assumption that the loyalty of anyone working in the American government from a Muslim background somehow has a desire to further a political objective from a foreign entity. This is unfair as it is unAmerican, but is now par for the course when it comes to how American Muslims are viewed in the public space. The reality is that many American Muslims, particularly those born and bred here, may have no ties at all to any foreign political or social movement. This is about the fact that Islam, like previously for Judaism or ethnic affiliations like the Japanese or Chinese, is perceived as inherently unAmerican or anti-American.

There are scores of American Muslims working in Washington as public servants making significant and important contributions to our country. Average Americans may be surprised that many of them had actually been elected to office, while others have been appointed and some have been selected for their expertise and skills in addressing the many problems our nation faces. None of them, including Huma Abedin, deserve to have their loyalty questioned based on random or distant associations that carry no meaning and likely could disqualify any Muslim American aspiring for public office. While this is the first time such accusations have been leveled against Abedin in a public forum, it is not the first time guilt-by-association tactics have scuttled the promising political careers of American Muslims. Some may recall in the early days of the Obama campaign Mazen Asbahi, an American Muslim lawyer, was appointed by the campaign to undertake outreach to the American Muslim community. Within days, Asbahi was forced to resign due to guilt-by-association relationships with certain individuals, none of whom was ever convicted or indicted for criminal activity in a court of law. The Obama administration feared a distraction, and Asbahi was forced to resign. He, and others like him, would never be able to garner the widespread support for Abedin. Perhaps this is why demonizing

American Muslim politicians has become all too common. For the rest of us, gaining widespread support and defense of high-ranking officials in similar scenarios is unheard of. The kind of climate created by this type of public discourse will almost invariably be viewed by future generations as a blemish on the American record, no different than the prejudice leveled against Jews, Japanese and Chinese in the 20th century. Not only do these types of accusations go against what it means to be American, but they also create the context for disenfranchisement of an entire community. This has two important negative consequences. First, it deprives the country of the expertise that American Muslims can bring to public service to address important challenges facing America. Second, it leads Muslim youth

to believe they are the “other,” making it easier for radical elements to convince them that violence is a solution. This type of rhetoric creates a sense of us versus them within America. The idea that Huma Abedin is clandestinely supporting the Muslim Brotherhood is patently absurd and an insult to the years of dedicated, selfless service she has done for our country. She deserves the bipartisan support she has received in the face of these unfounded and baseless accusations. However, what we also need is for an end to the guilt by association tactics that prevent others from following in Huma’s footsteps. For those of us not known personally by Senator McCain and Rep. Boehner, we need to end the witch-hunt mentality against American Muslims that infects our political system. GLOBAL POST

EDITORIALS Is Ramdev digging his own grave? Is TD the only clean party in AP?

I

t’s ironic that a man as mysterious as Baba Ramdev proclaims himself the flag-bearer of the war on corruption. The yoga expert has been raising the temperature in Delhi with his protest at Ambedkar Stadium demanding that the government act on black money. He has singled out Congress to train his guns going onto the extent of warning dire consequences for the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance at the General Elections in 2014. The word is out that the government is giving final touches to a two-volume report prepared by the income tax department on Baba Ramdev's trusts and ayurvedic ventures. Government sources say that the investigation has been going on for some time now and though it could be seen the report is in retribution to Ramdev’s tirade against the government, it is not so. It was not so long ago the yogi has hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons: Tax evasions, spurious nature of his ayurvedic products and that the alleged criminal past of one of his aides. Is Ramdev digging his own grave by prompting the government to disclose the I-T report?

READERS’ VIEWS

I

t is curious. The only party that publicly embraced (literally too) Baba Ramdev and fought on corruption issue in Andhra Pradesh happens to be Telugu Desham Party. The TD Chief Chandrababu Naidu had held the Baba to his bossom when he visited Naidu recently. It is also pertinent that the TD is the only party that made corruption its agenda for a by-poll (Ramachandrapuram). Does this mean other parties approve corruption? A sad commentary for a great state, indeed.

GOOGLE SPIES ON APPLE USERS The US Federal Trade Commission fined Google $22.5 million for violating the privacy of people who used rival Apple’s Safari web browser even after pledging not to do so. The FTC said Google had agreed with the commission in October 2011 not to place tracking cookies on or deliver targeted ads to Safari users, but then went ahead and did so.

LAST IMPRESSIONS

Three months notice

If the notice period is the most awaited period in an employee's tenure, it is also the most dreaded for an employer. We find out why it’s important for both to remain cordial till the last day. PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com

here are few problems talking can’t solve. Talk to your manager about your deliverables. Find our your responsibilities and fulfill them before you move on. connectivity, almost everyone knows everyone. And there’s always reference checks. So word is bound to spread. Also, if you want to come back to the company, your performance till the end will be on record. Besides, on an ethical level too, it’s objectionable. Until you are on the payroll, you owe your hundred percent to the company,”opines Meera Krishnan, a senior HR associate. Dinesh Divekar, a Bangalore-based Management & Behavioural Training Consultant offers another interesting facet to the topic. “Admittedly, a lot of people lose interest and become non-committal and indifferent during their notice period. But a

In this day and age of interconnectivity, everyone knows everyone. You are on record till the end. Word gets back. lot of it also comes down to the culture of the company too. If a company has treated its employee well, made it easy for hand/takeover of duties, its more likely that the employee will remember, appreciate and be loyal till the end. But if there’s a culture of mistrust and unhappiness, they will do as little as they can and wait to get out.”

More agree. The process of separation should be taken equally seriously by the employers too. “Normal industry norm is a three month notice period. But many organisations insist on an employee serving the full term even after they have found a replacement. It has a detrimental effect because the person now has little value addition to add to the present company but is being held back from his next venture too. So, a more reasonable time-frame should be considered so its a win-win,” feels soft-skill trainer and HR Consultant, N K Sundaram. The verdict is unanimous. Last impressions are as important as first.

fter a year in a Bangalore-based MNC, Rohit Kumar received an offer from another software development firm with a better package and unbelievable benefits. The only hitch, the three month notice period. “I was already ready to move. So it was hard to keep myself motivated. Especially since they insisted I stay the whole period. So my performance levels dropped considerably. I didn't care. How does it matter, I thought. Little did I know,” he recalls, laughing wryly. Incidentally, within the next year, Rohit's reporting manager moved to the same company too. “It was a nightmare. He saw me at my worst during the notice period and concluded that I was a non-performer. It took me months of back-breaking work to win his trust back. Then, I realised how important it is to leave with a good impression,” he adds. Rohit’s might be a harsh example but it’s not unusual to see the conduct of an employee change drastically during the last days of work. Employers are quick to point that they notice a number of motivational and performance issues, irregularity, non-completion of work, and in extreme cases, cause actual damage to the company. Experts say this is a common mistake that can be easily avoided or else can cost the employees in the long-run. “In this day and age of inter-

een wondering why for some people growing their wisdom teeth is effortless, while for others it’s a pain like no other? There’ll be swollen jaws, pain so bad that you’re left sleepless till the doctor intervenes. This has a lot to do with modern eating habits, say medical experts. Says Dr Kapil Patil, assistant

professor at Kamineni Institute of Dental Science, “Earlier people had a high fibre diet and hence wider jaws. But with the modern day diet, people’s jaws have gotten narrower leaving little space for the wisdom teeth to grow (these teeth grow last after the age of 15).” “Due to this lack of space, the wisdom teeth become impacted. Sometimes the tooth is covered by soft tissue and can be easily extracted. However, in some cases the tooth grows in the bone (either horizontally or vertically) and we have to cut

into the bone to remove the tooth. These cases are a lot more painful and take time to heal,” he adds. The incomplete eruption of the wisdom tooth in the mouth is the main problem says Dr Salahuddin of Salahuddin’s Dental Clinic. “The emerging tooth tries to push the existing teeth but is trapped between them and the jaw. That is when the patient feels pain. At times, this emerging tooth compresses the nerve that is beneath it, creating an extremely painful situation. We often extract the wis-

A procedure needs to be performed under general anaesthesia and the dental surgeon has to extract the tooth with great care. If the nerve is damaged then it could mean paralysis of that whole area,” he says. Submerged tooth is another problem that some patients face. “In this case, the tooth is surrounded by soft tissue that fails

This causes food particles to become trapped in the cavity between the tissue and the tooth, thereby causing infections and pain to the patient. Croup is caused by a respiratory infection that causes a child to make a particular sound, like a harsh bark, when they cough or cry. Croup causes inflammation and narrowing of the larynx and trachea (the main airways to the lungs) more formally known as laryngotracheitis. The mucosa lining the airway becomes inflamed and there are secretions. Although usually mild, it can cause severe breathing problems.

Breast cancer is said to be one of the most common types of cancer among women. According to studies, the risk of breast cancer increases with age and if you live to 90 years your risk of developing this cancer is almost 14 per cent. It is said that early detection increases chances of 5 years survival to 98 per cent.

Stress, depression can shrink brain

Yale scientists have discovered that excess bouts of stress and depression can actually be responsible for a decrease in brain volume. WASHINGTON: Don’t take stress or depression lightly, they can actually shrink the brain and contribute to both emotional and mental degradation, according to a US study. Now researchers have discovered one reason why this occurs - a single genetic switch that triggers loss of brain connections in humans and depression in animal models. The findings show that the genetic switch known as a transcription factor represses the expression of several genes that are necessary for the formation of synaptic connections

WASHINGTON: Doctors sporting ‘iconic’ medical symbols like stethoscope during econsultations seem to win their patient’s trust, says a new Australian research. The six-month e-health project was undertaken by researchers at the Curtin University Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI) and funded by Curtin’s Office of Research and Development. They investigated the process of providing e-consultations, and whether the presence of ‘iconic’ medical symbols like a stethoscope, surgical scrubs or a reflex hammer would help doctors build a relationship of trust online. Medical e-consultations make use of electronic computing and communication technologies in the consultation processes, particularly when a client is unable to see a doctor face-toface, the Journal of Medical Internet Research reports. In the study, a series of images portraying different combinations of medical tools were shown to 168 people who ranked them by how trustworthy they looked, according to a Curtin statement. The stethoscope was ranked the most positive by participants, receiving a rating of 95 percent. Words associated with the medical device included honest, trustworthy, honourable, moral, ethical and genuine. Moyez Jiwa, professor and head of CHIRI Chronic Disease and research leader, said the findings were particularly important to the medical field given its growth in the ehealth field. “Our research also highlighted that the stethoscope was singularly the most trusted medical tool,” Jiwa said. WARN YOUR CHILD ABOUT STRANGERS Typically, children will unknowingly humorously, ‘show up’ their parents to extended family and friends, sharing information they picked up much to the chagrin of parents. It is important to talk to your child about what kind of information to share. Explain to your child that it is not okay to talk to total strangers and it is important to not share information about herself. Explain to her that it’s okay to talk to

other children her age and to make friends but to be careful when talking to adults and strangers. Explain to your child why she needs to be careful and how information can be dangerous. In addition, know that as long as you do not push you child, teaching them to be careful will make them an introvert. Being an introvert is normal. The only disorder where they form inappropriate connections is reactive

attachment disorder and this occurs in children who are from homes where they are abused or neglected and unable to form attachments with their caregivers. This is rare. Most children just need explanation for why or why not to do certain things. The writer is a counselling psychologist at the Hyderabad Academy of Psychology. KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Fox, 26, who is currently pregnant with the couple’s first child, said she knew he was the one for her despite their 12-year age gap. “The first time I saw him I got butterflies. We’re destined to live this part of our lives together,” she said. PTI

Perry and Mayer spotted together

J

ennifer Aniston is engaged to marry her partner of more than a year, screenwriter and actor Justin Theroux. Her representative, Stephen Huvane, confirmed the news on Sunday night. Theroux, 41, and Aniston, 43, have known each other for years, but started dating more than a year ago after working on the comedy Wanderlust. Theroux whose screenwriting credits include Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2 and Rock of Ages — popped the question on Friday, which was also his birthday. “Justin Theroux had an amazing birthday on Friday, receiving an extraordinary gift when his girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston, accepted his proposal of marriage,” Theroux’s representative said in a statement to People. This will be Aniston’s second marriage and Theroux’s first. Her union with Brad Pitt from 2000 to 2005 — and their subsequent divorce became rich material for the tabloids.

RELEASED

India’s first medal winner at the 2012 London Olympics Games, Gagan Narang, was back in town yesterday. In his endavour to give back to the sport all that it gave him, he intends to start academies in the state and elsewhere in the country. G APARNA SAI aparna.s@postnoon.com

I want to give back to the state and the country what the sport has given me. I want to open academies all over the country.

T

he 2012 London Olympics seems to have done a lot of good for the country; not only did this Olympics see India win a record medal haul but these victories seem to have opened the doors for improving the sporting conditions in the sub-continent. Gagan Narang, India's first medalist at the London Games, has voiced his plans of opening a sporting academy in the city. Having already opened a shooting academy in Pune, Gun for Glory, under the Gagan Narang sports foundation, the ace shooter intends to do the same in Hyderabad. "I want to give back to the state and the country what the sport has given me. I would want to open academies all over the country,” Narang said. The bronze medalist went on to add, “I want to start an academy so that no parent would have to sell their land for their kids to be champions.” The shooter who started off with playing cricket, table tennis, badminton and tennis before he took up shooting, thanked every person responsible for making his dream come true. He believed that more than

his victories, it were the games he lost that pushed him to do better and make him what he was today. In his endeavour to increase the encouragment levels of sports in the country, the shooter suggested that sports be made a subject (and students graded) in schools. Reacting to these suggestions, it was learnt that the government has decid-

ed to make sports a compulsory subject in schools from the next academic year. The 29-year-old shooter, feels that such steps would improve the quality of sport in the country. He believs that there in immense talent present which has to be tapped in the right manner. He also hoped that this year's Olympics achievements would see India

clinch more medals in the 2016 Rio Games and also that he would be able to "change his medal colour in the next Olympics, having burried the ghosts from Beijing”. Earlier in the day, Narang was given a warm welcome when he arrived in the city. Fans including numerous school kids, thronged the Rajiv Gandhi Airport international airport at Shamshabad. The crowd cheered as the bronze medalist made his entry. The applauds came late in Gagan’s career, but they sure did come. The shooting hero certainly deserved the hero’s welcome.

Biggest crowd expected for Paralympics A record 2.1 million tickets sold for the Paralympic Games surpasses the previous record of 1.8 million sold at Beijing.

LONDON: The record 2.1 million surpasses the previous record of 1.8 million tickets sold for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. Over 600,000 tickets have been purchased in the last month alone, with more tickets still available, according to The Guardian. Seb Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted with how the British public has responded so far to tickets for the Paralympic Games.’ Sir Philip Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee said: ‘To have sold the most ever tickets for a Paralympic Games

three weeks before the Opening Ceremony shows the insatiable appetite the public has for top class elite sport. ‘So far London has delivered a quite spectacular Olympic Games which has further whetted the appetite of the public ahead of the Paralympics’. So far, 2.5 million Paralympic tickets have been put on sale in total and the remaining tickets are available now, with more tickets available online next week. Tickets still available include those for sports at ExCeL such as Wheelchair Fencing, Sitting Volleyball, Boccia and Powerlifting. AFP

MIAMI: Former Miami Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson was released from jail after he was arrested on charges of domestic violence, The Miami Herald reported Sunday. Johnson, who recently changed his name back to Johnson from Ochocinco, allegedly headbutted his new wife during an argument in a car. Evelyn Lozada had cuts on her forehead when police arrived at the scene. She was later transported to a hospital. Johnson and his wife were returning home after going out for dinner. The argument started when Lozada found a receipt for condoms in the vehicle. The Dolphins cut Johnson just hours after he posted bail and was released from jail, the newspaper said.

SOUTH AFRICA IN ENGLAND

Pietersen texts just ‘banter’

Kevin Pietersen’s controversial texts to members of the Proteas squad were just “banter”, according to South Africa’s team manager, Mohammed Moosajee.

LONDON: South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee has said Kevin Pietersen’s controversial texts to members of the Proteas squad were just “banter” after claims he criticised England captain Andrew Struass and Andy Flower. Pietersen was dropped from the England team for the crucial final Test which starts at Lord’s on Thursday after he refused to reveal the contents of the texts, which were sent during the drawn second Test at Headingley earlier this month. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had told Pietersen his selection depended on him confirming publicly that no derogatory texts had been sent to the opposition or if they had been sent then he had to publicly apologise for them. Pakistan drop Younis for Oz ODIs KARACHI: Pakistan on Monday dropped seasoned batsman Younis Khan from a 16-man squad for a three one-day match series against Australia, starting in the United Arab Emirates later this month. The matches will be played on August 28 in Sharjah, August 31 in Abu Dhabi and again in Sharjah on September 3. The teams will also play three Twenty20s, for which a team was announced last month. Khan, 34, had been a lean form during a five-match away one-day series against Sri Lanka last month, scoring only 10 runs in four innings. He has so far played 245 ODIs for Pakistan, scoring 6,824 runs, but his last hundred came four years ago. Also out of the squad is ace paceman Umar Gul.

Moosajee said on Monday. “We stand by the same stance we have taken since we heard the news about these allegations. Yes, text messages were sent but like we said before it was banter among team-mates, which is perfectly acceptable. “The ECB has not made a formal approach to myself or any member of the team to see the text messages, as currently reported in the media. “Allegations that Dale Steyn and AB de Villiers were the recipients of the texts are unfounded. Until such time that the allegations are met with the correct facts and evidence, we shall not comment. The internal issue between Kevin Pietersen and the English cricket board has been publicised for weeks, even before we arrived in the UK, and we don’t want to get ourselves involved in an issue that has nothing to do with us.” AFP

Pietersen refused to respond to the ECB’s request, he was axed and the 32-year-old’s international career is now in tatters. But Moosajee played down the content of the texts and said the messages contained nothing more than “banter”. He also refuted

REVENGE MODE

Ponting on the prowl Veteran Australian batsman Ricky Ponting says his key motivation to keep playing is the hurt of losing back-to-back Ashes series. SYDNEY: Veteran Australian batsman Ricky Ponting says his key motivation to keep playing is the hurt of losing back-toback Ashes series, as he works to stay fit for another crack at arch-rivals England. Former skipper Ponting, 38, could break Steve Waugh’s record as Australia’s mostcapped Test cricketer in the first match of a three-Test series against Sri Lanka in December, with his eye on making the 2013 team to tour England. Ponting, who was dumped from the one-day international squad in February, has played 165 Tests, three shy of Waugh, his predecessor as skipper, with a South Africa series ahead of the Sri Lanka showdown.

He told ABC Sport that the Ashes series defeats were what keeps his motivation strong, particularly losing crucial Tests at The Oval. “No doubt about that. It’s one of the biggest motivators I have right now,” he said. “Every morning (when) I get up and go to the gym and I’m pounding away at the treadmill, it’s with some of the memories of The Oval on the last couple of tours. “They’re not things that go away easily. We’ve been very close there on the last couple of tours... haven’t quite been good enough and we were nowhere good enough for the last Tests over here. “I think all Australian crick-

eters have a point to prove to England and more importantly a lot to prove in England.” Ponting has not played much cricket since the tour of the West Indies that ended in February, but Australia coach Mickey Arthur has backed him to be a key figure in next year’s Ashes series in England. Ponting said he was ready to fight for his place on the team. “If there’s someone out there better than me that is breathing down my neck and pushing me out the side, that’s international sport,” he said. “If there’s someone better than Michael Hussey or David Warner that’s the way it is. You have to be picking the best team to win every game you play.”

OUR MAN IN LONDON DEV S SUKUMAR

The morning after: memories ... and several questions

I

t’s over. The half-monthlong global celebration of sport finally wound down with a grand music show, leaving us with memories and lots of analysis to do. India finished 55th in the medals tally; the country didn’t do as well as expected (the general consensus before the Olympics was between nine and eleven medals); but we’ll take six. After all, it was India’s bestever haul. I watched the closing ceremony at Greenwich, close to the Royal Observatory, where a public screening was arranged. There was the feel of a nightlong festival, with people parking themselves on the grass and spreading out mats and peacefully sipping beer and drinking in the music. From time to time, as the screen showed British athletes, they applauded. On the streets and trains, the last few days had seen people proudly displaying the British flag. The Union Jack had suddenly become more visible. There was no doubt that, as the Olympics progressed, a deeprooted nationalism was out in the open again, but it was a nationalism that was cheerful; not boorish, for I noticed that

For a fortnight, Delhi aspired to infrastructure was good enough everybody applauded the nonbecome a city of its own limited to accommodate the Games British athletes as well. Among imagination, without beggars without appearing to be burBritish athletes themselves, the and poverty and traffic jams for dened with it. Perhaps there are just too many internal contradictions in Europe’s identity politics of today for such a view to prevail. London did not have to transform itself fundamentally for the Olympics the way Delhi had to for the Commonwealth. The support system of the city, such as its public transport networks, information systems for visitors, accommodation, etc – wasn’t stretched. In other words: the average Londoner went about his life with hardly a blip. It was business as usual in the trains and on the streets. As the Games progressed, one got to see people wearing British colours, and chatting excitedly, Wrestler Sushil Kumar, who won Silver at the London Olympics, is greeted but that was about it. Delhi’s or Lucknow’s. What is more important for us, as citizens, is to have ease of transport without requiring an Asian Games or Commonwealth to necessitate it. Of course, transport is just one of several parameters of liveability in a city. The greater its liveability, the more we will appreciate a Games of this scale. We can also see how Western Europe produces more sports champions than we do. It’s essentially because sport is built into the fabric of everyday living. Sport access is not only for the privileged. Each borough here, for instance, runs several inexpensive and excellently-run sports centres. We cannot aspire for air-conditioned badminton courts and swimming pools, but surely we can expect open grounds with a running track and changing rooms? I notice that the churches here have sports programmes – they’re considered healthy community activity. Surely our centres of worship of all religions, which have vast lands and generate millions of rupees annually, can invest in a good earthly life for their believers rather than promise them a glorious afterlife?

2016 OLYMPIC GAMES

Olympic flag arrives in excited Rio MAIRA RENOU Agence France-Presse RIO DE JANEIRO: The Olympic flag arrived on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, which will host the 2016 Summer Games — a challenge which authorities in Brazil say the city is prepared to conquer. Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes stepped off a plane carrying the

flag, accompanied by Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the 2016 Games Organizing Committee and Rio Governor Sergio Cabral, an AFP correspondent at the airport saw. “The arrival of the Olympic flag marks a period of transformation in the city,” Paes told reporters. “This is a unique opportunity for Brazil — a time of great celebration.”

Rio de Janeiro’s city mayor Eduardo Paes waves the Olympic flag upon arrival at the Tom Jobim airport in Rio de Janeiro, on Monday. AFP

Also on board the plane were Brazilian athletes — some with medals around their necks — who competed in the London Games, which ended on Sunday in a blaze of music, fireworks and light. “Arriving in Rio with the flag was a privilege for us, the athletes,” said Roberto Scheidt, who won bronze in Olympic sailing’s Star competition with Bruno Prada.

“There is room for much improvement (in terms of the number of medals won) here in Rio,” Scheidt added. Brazil won a total of 17 medals in London — three gold, five silver and nine bronze. Hosting the Games will be a huge challenge for a city notorious for its traffic chaos, poor infrastructure and shanty town violence.

Veteran Nikolay hands Dolgopolov lesson in tennis. CINCINNATI: Old pro Nikolay Davydenko (left), a former top five threat, schooled Ukrainian young gun Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-1 on Monday to get off to a rollicking start at the ATPWTA Cincinnati Masters. The 31-year-old Russian left Dolgopolov, eight years his junior, wondering what happened to the game which produced a title in Washington eight days ago

on pre-US Open hardcourts. Since beating German Tommy Haas for the final in the American capital, Dolgopolov has lost two matches, winning just four games in the process. Davydenko, 2008 Cincinnati semi-finalist, said he wished he could roll back the years: “I am playing well but there is no way that I will get younger, it’s too much to ask,” said the Russian as he played

for the first time since the London Olympics. Davydenko, an eightyear veteran with an 11-8 mark at the tournament, also won the pair’s only other match in the Barcelona first round in April, 2011. Dolgopolov exits without having ever won a match in three Cincinnati attempts. In another men’s match, Italian Andreas Seppi beat Dutchman Robin Haase 6-4, 6-4. AFP

CINCINNATI: Roger Federer would have hoped for more than just the few days of pause he managed after the London Olympic final, but will take what he can get as the world number one prepares for his start on Wednesday at the Cincinnati Masters. The top seed said even his few days away to his 31st birthday with his wife and twin daughters was worthwhile for recuperation as he lays the groundwork for his final sprint of the abbreviated summer hardcourt season going into the US Open. “The last few years we always had at least a two, three-week preparation for the hard courts,” said the seven-time Wimbledon winner and Olympic silver medal-

list behind Andy Murray. “But this time we’ve just had two and a half weeks more on grass, so obviously I don’t think the preparation is as good as it’s been in the previous years. “I’ve had better preparations, there’s no doubt about it, but it was definitely key for me to take some time off. I’m sort of in a tunnel vision right now from the French Open through Wimbledon, the Olympics,” he said.

FOOTBALL REMATCH World Cup is focus as England play Italy ANDY SCOTT Agence France-Presse BERN: England and Italy meet again in Bern on Wednesday, just 52 days after Roy Hodgson’s side exited Euro 2012 following a penalty shoot-out defeat to the Azzurri in the quarter-finals in Kiev. But this rematch, which also comes just three days before the start of the new Premier League season, is not about revenge. Instead, England are looking to the future, with Hodgson taking an inexperienced squad with him for the encounter at the Stade de Suisse in the Swiss capital. MONTREAL MASTERS

Petra outlasts Li for first title of season MONTREAL: Former Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova claimed her first title of 2012 as she won a battle of ex-grand slam champions, beating China’s Li Na 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 at the Montreal Masters on Monday. Kvitova, the fifth seed, rode a roller coaster in the 62minute opening set which featured 17 break points between the error-prone pair with a dozen of those saved.

The momentum shifts were fast and frequent in the opener, with the 22-year-old Czech and her Chinese opponent, who won Roland Garros last season, exchanging the lead back and forth. Kvitova finally took the early lead on a fifth set point in a monster final game. Dropping the first set seemed to spur on the 30-yearold Li, who had come from 5-1 down in her semi-final win

over Lucie Safarova. The Paris champion broke to start the second set and squared at a set each in another quick halfhour second set. The pair settled in during the third set, with Kvitova earning a break for 4-2 and lifting the trophy three games later on her first match point after two and a quarter hours. She ended with six doublefaults while losing her serve four times on way to victory.

World number 11 Li has how finished runner-up three times in 2012 after coming up short in a final scheduled for Monday night so as not to clash with the closing of the London Olympics on Sunday. The pair now stand level at two wins each in their series, which began in 2011. Kvitova earned a personal best in North America as she played her first final on the continent. AFP
