riving through the threelane Punjagutta road was an easy affair despite frequent traffic jams. Of late though, it has become a nightmare for commuters to pass through this stretch. The reason — a third of the main road is dug up for the ongoing Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited (APCPDCL) underground cabling. The APCPDCL work runs along the stretch of road between Punjagutta and Erra Manzil. The work, which started a week ago has been posing problems since then. P Rajender, a senior official

with the Civil Supplies Bhavan in Punjagutta said that it has become an ordeal for people to travel here as the roads are blocked. “It now takes me 45 minutes to reach office when I was taking only 30 minutes before,” he said. Besides the waste of

time, the bottleneck leads to wastage of fuel and consequent pollution, he pointed out. Rehmat Ilahi, an office assistant says that although his home in Banjara Hills isn't too far, it is an uphill task to reach Punajagutta every day, “The bus

bay has been blocked due to the road being dug up and the RTC buses are forced to stop in the middle of the road. DR Sharma, a security man in the area says, “All employees are coming late to office.” A junior assistant at a government dispensary in Punjagutta, T Prabhakar Rao said, “I used to reach the dispensary in 18 minutes from my home in Goshamahal. Now it takes me 40 minutes.” Autorickshaw drivers too, are wary of taking passengers to Punjagutta. “I refuse taking passengers to Panjagutta. But, being a centrally located area, passing through this stretch is unavoidable and I have lost out on customers. Passengers aren't willing to take a detour either,” said a visibly unhappy D Sowmya, an autorickshaw driver.

I used to reach the dispensary in 18 minutes from my home in Goshamahal. Now it takes 40 minutes T Prabhakar Rao Traffic woes apart, street vendors in the area are reporting losses. “Customers usually stop and buy fruits from me. Now that the road is narrow, there is no space for them to park their vehicles. My sales have gone down by `300 a day. I am not sure of how long I’ll do business here,” said Mehboob Ali, the fruit vendor.

It’s been 72 years since its inception, much has changed, but it’s still a hot favourite with Hyderabadis. This is one place where you can find everything from Kashmiri shawls to South Indian silks, electronics, footwear, groceries, toys, handicrafts, furniture — you name it and it’s up for grabs. But somewhere in the midst of all these glitzy outlets is a stall that will take you by surprise — it is a stall set up by prisoners. The Andhra Pradesh Prisoners Department boasts of numerous articles produced by prisoners lodged in jails across the State. All the products here have been made by the convicts themselves. It is heartening to see inmates take on the role of enthusiastic salesmen extolling the virtues of jail-made products. “They are organic, hand-made and healthy...” goes the spiel. So if you want to lay your hands on fresh vegetables, almirahs, table covers or colourful durries you might want to drop by this stall on your next visit. While Ganta Srinivasa Rao’s induction seems to be a smooth affair, it is still not clear about the second PRP leader to be sworn in if Ramachnadraiah’s name was not considered due to the stiff opposition. aw is an ass but the arms of the law are long enough to catch a fugitive of 25 years standing as is proved in the case of Kashinadh alias Kashappa. Kashappa’s story runs like a film script. He was a well-built unskilled labourer who had a libido matching his audacity. Twenty five years ago when he was 48, married with three kids, he developed an illicit relationship with a sex worker Sundaribai at Mehbook-ke-Mehendi. He started living with her. His harried wife, Kamalabai, went to Sundaribai’s house and accosted her. Naturally, a quarrel broke out and an enraged Kashappa who was present poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. He fled the scene and was not spotted thereafter. He was declared a fugitive and the case went into a limbo. Now, after 25 years the man was traced to a farm in Bidar and was brought back to the City. He is now 74. His story reveals that he was doing odd jobs in different parts of the City for 10 long years though police files said he was untraceable. But he was around, changing jobs periodically -- from a cycle mechanic to a domestic help he did it all. Sometimes he grew a beard and sometimes he’d be clean shaven but he was very much in the City. Later, as he found the ground not good enough he went to Karnataka where he was living all these years. Since he could understand Kannada and Telugu he had little problem. It was after V Shyambabu took charge as inspector, Charminar police, a few months ago that the case was reopened. He was traced in Bhalki in Bidar, nearly 100 km from here. “It adds stature to our constabulary which did a sterling job in tracing him. He evinced surprise when he was handcuffed,” said Shyambabu.

rotesting non-payment of their salary and allowances, a section of Air India pilots have decided to go on ‘no-pay-nowork’ agitation from Friday midnight. The pilots held a meeting in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai and decided to go on the agitation from midnight on Friday, said a pilot associated with the development. This is like ‘work-to-rule’, said another pilot who requested anonymity. “The airline management can pay the oil companies when they refuse to sell them jet fuel but they have no money to pay the employees for months", the pilot said. The decision of the pilots is likely to affect the flights though an airline spokesperson earlier said there is ‘no agitation’ by the Air India employees and all operations of Air India are normal and no flights have been cancelled. India celebrates ‘zero-polio’ year, lauded by WHO NEW DELHI: With a ‘zero-polio’ record in the last one year, India Friday carried its fight against the crippling disease to hospitals and health care centres across the country where parents brought their children for vaccination as the World Health Organisation lauded the country’s achievement. The World Health Organisation has commended India’s one year of being a ‘poliofree nation’, calling it a major achievement. “India’s success is arguably its greatest public health achievement and has provided a global opportunity to push for the end of polio,” WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said in a statement. “Stopping polio in India required creativity, perseverance and professionalism. The lessons from India must now be adapted and implemented through emergency actions to finish polio

School children form “Polio Free India” in Hyderabad on AFP Friday. everywhere,” Chan said. Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said the country is vigilant yet alert. “We are excited and hopeful, at the same time vigilant and alert,” Azad said in a statement. January 13 marks one full year when the country has reported no new polio case.

WHO also stressed on the need to remain vigilant. “There remains no room for complacency. India must maintain sensitive surveillance and high childhood immunity against the wild polio virus to guard against any importation of polio until eradication is achieved globally,” the WHO statement added. The country has spent more than `12,000 crore on the Pulse Polio Programme. It took a lead in introducing bivalent polio vaccine (bOPV) in January 2010. WHO in fact called the scale on India’s polio programme “mind-boggling”. “The scale of the eradication effort in India is mind-boggling” says WHO, “each year, more than 170 million children under the age of 5 are vaccinated in two national immunization campaigns, with up to 70 million children in the highest-risk areas vaccinated multiple times” IANS

26/11 Pak panel to visit India

Silent majority should speak: CAG

NEW DELHI: A Pakistani judicial commission probing the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks will visit India in February to record the statements of witnesses and investigators of the 2008 mayhem, a source said on Friday. The final dates of the visit are yet to be decided, but tentatively the Pakistani panel will be in India next month, the official source said. The development came after the Bombay High Court gave its nod to the Pakistani judicial

NEW DELHI: Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai, who had estimated that the 2G spectrum allocation caused the exchequer `1.76 lakh crore, on Friday said that democracy was at the “crossroads” and it was time for the “silent majority” to speak up. Addressing a gathering of his Hindu college alumni and students at a function where he received the “Alumunus of the Decade” award, Rai also said the work done by his institution had taken a toll on his friendships.

A file image of the 26/11 AFP terror attack commission to record the statements of Mumbai terror attack witnesses. According to sources,

the court has given an in-principle approval for the visit and has informed the union home ministry about it. The ministry, the sources said, would soon convey this to Pakistan and the two countries would then finalise the dates for the commission’s visit. Pakistan has expressed desire to record statement of the magistrate, RV Sawant Waghule, who had recorded the confession of Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive during the Mumbai attack. “Democracy is at crossroads today and each one of us assembled here needs to contribute to debunk the myth of the silent majority,” Rai said. “The time has come for the majority not to be silent because it is a minority which speaks on the behalf of the majority,” the government auditor said. Speaking in a lighter vein, he said: “The pace at which I am losing friends, this award better came this year. Next year you may probably not even decide to give this award to me.” IANS

US doubts Iran-Syria alliance WASHINGTON: The United States believes Iran is supplying munitions to aid Syria’s bloody protest crackdown in an initiative spearheaded by Tehrsan’s revolutionary guard supremo, senior US officials said on Friday. Qasem Soleimani, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps elite Quds force, was in the Syrian capital this month, one official said, in what Washington sees as the most concrete sign yet that Iranian aid to Syria includes military hardware. “We are confident that he was received at the highest levels of the Syrian government, including by President Assad,” the official said on a condition of anonymity. “We think this relates to Iranian support for the Syrian government’s attempts to suppress its people.” The official said Washington has reason to believe that Iran is supplying security-related equipment “including munitions” to Syrian forces. “The US government believes Iran has supplied Syria with munitions” for use in the military crackdown, he said. The United States has long

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad speaks to his supporters during a public appearance in Damascus. AFP suspected that Iran has been aiding Syria’s purge against protesters as Assad tries to cling to power and avoid the fate of other Arab dictators felled by the Arab Spring uprisings. Another official said Soleimani’s visit marks the strongest indication yet of direct cooperation between the allies amid a purge that the UN estimates has left more than 5,000 people dead since March. The officials did not give

further details of the information that has led them to conclude that Tehran has indeed provided security equipment and munitions to the Syrian armed forces. The powerful Soleimani has been mentioned by some observers as a possible successor to Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and has repeatedly been the target of US sanctions. Last year, Washington

accused him of links to an alleged plot by the Quds force to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington by hiring assassins from a Mexican drug cartel for $1.5 million. The latest revelations come with the United States locked in a tense standoff with Tehran over its nuclear program and as maritime tensions between the two states simmering in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route. Washington has warned Iran it will not tolerate any attempt to close the Strait, as Tehran becomes increasingly infuriated by the growing impact of US and international sanctions designed to deter its nuclear program. The Revolutionary Guards maritime division, which handles military operations in the strait and the Gulf, is to hold maneuvres in the area. Signs of direct co-operation between Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and Syria came a week after Mahmud Suleiman Haj Hamad, a former official in Assad’s regime, accused Iran and Iraq of financially aiding the Syrian crackdown. ‘It was just like a scene from Titanic’ ROME: Six people died on Friday after a cruise ship ran aground off the Italian coast in an accident which forced the Italian coast guard to evacuate over 4,000 people, according to media reports. The Costa Concordia was on a trip around the Mediterranean when it hit a reef near the Isola del Giglio. The local mayor said he feared further casualties as it was proving difficult to rescue the last passengers. One of the victims was a man in his 70s who died of a heart attack caused by the shock to his system when he jumped into the icy waters, reports said. Most of the 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members had been evacuated, but around 200 people were still on board. Some passengers jumped into the sea in their hurry to get off the sinking ship, according to the reports. “It was like a scene from the Titanic,” said passenger Mara Parmegiani. AFP

Editorials THE CURIOUS CASE of Businessman Apart from Mahesh Babu’s terrific performance in Businessman, the other aspect which everyone’s talking about is the dialogues written by Puri Jagannadh. It’s rare to see a film, which solely runs on a hero’s characterisation and dialogues. A film like this is proof enough that one doesn’t need scores of comedians and other fillers to drive the plot. Businessman makes for an interesting case study in Telugu cinema where not having comedy is almost considered as blasphemy. Perhaps, others can take a leaf out of this film to come up with ways to enthrall the audience. You don’t really have to spend a bomb on special effects. Just good writing would do.

Several wellknown names in literature such as George Eliot are examples of circumstances forcing adoption of pseudonyms of opposite sex. Boris says the female alter ego was not for commercial gain but to find a voice for his feminine sensitivities. He has definitely inspired those who feel suffocated in their own gender.

he New Year began with a bang. Since I didn’t bring it in with pink champagne or a string of ‘Page 3’ parties, or nuzzling at a man’s neck, one could say I haven’t yet woken up to the fact that it is a new year — 2012. As if it was not morbid enough for me to lose my pet, Ginger, on January 5, I hear now that we all must prepare for the rightful end of our world on December 2012. So, what does that mean? Should we buckle up and sashay down the path of our dreams and ambitions, aim for that high-paying job, and continue to hold grudges against traitor friends? Or should we quietly retire with whatever savings we have (strictly cash!) to the Himalayas? But hasn’t the world ended several times for many of us when we have lost our lovers, jobs, parents, partners, siblings, pets, dreams and dignity? In that measure, if Mother Earth wants to explode by December, we can’t really fault that. We might as well put that thought aside until December 1, and live the way we want to, because by suddenly altering our natures or desperately seeking a role model in order to redeem ourselves over the next 11-odd months is a sheer waste of time. To stay alive, we just need to live. Too simple? Not really. There are many ways to stay alive. New Year resolutions is a great and timetested way — that is, if you can focus on following them for a month or two, and then not. That will sort of fill you with guilt and all sorts of other useless emotions, guaranteed to remind you that you are human, and alive! The other way, the bar-headed geese’s way, is worth considering. Bar-headed geese are one of God’s most special creations. Lily Whiteman writes in Audubon Birds about the impossibly daunting landscape where these surreal creatures survive. As Lily says, imagine this: At 29,028 feet, where the tallest peak Mount Everest reigns supreme, oxygen is scare (about a third of that available at sea level), and life is rare. Mount Everest is tall enough to poke into the ‘jet

Profiling unfair

Good story on Africans

Profiling of Africans is unfair and unbecoming of a country as diverse as ours. Why should everyone suffer for the crimes of a few? Our tradition is to treat guests like gods, whether young or old. We crib so much when foreign consulates delay our paperwork. In that case, what right do we have to keep these youngsters running from pillar to post to ensure their basic amenities? The police and the public should show more sensitivity so that the few years these foreign students spent here can be cherished and doesn’t become an ordeal. Shanti Srinivas Kukatpally

Postnoon has struck the right chord with the story of Africans being profiled as drug peddlers. I have many friends who are Africans and Nigerians, true they like to keep a limited circle of friends but they are not as bad as they are made out to be. This is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. The state on one hand prides itself for promoting such friendly ties but on the other it shoves all people foreign into jail on the slightest pretexts. As rightly said, it’s high time we practiced what we preach.

stream’ — which is a high-altitude river of wind that blows at speeds of more than 200 miles an hour. If we were at that height, our exposed flesh would freeze instantly. Kerosene can’t burn here, helicopters can’t fly here. Yet, flocks of bar-headed geese — the world’s highest altitude migrants — fly from their winter feeding grounds in the lowlands of India through the Himalayan range, directly above Everest, on their way to the nesting grounds in Tibet. Then, every fall, these magnificently brave birds retrace their route to India. What’s more, it is believed that with just a little help from the tailwinds, they may be able to cover the one-way trip — more than 1,000 miles — in a single day. Wow! If a 5pounds, 2-feet high bird with the ability to fly over 50 miles an hour can show that kind

of spunk, we don’t need to wait for December 2012 to justify our lack of life or ‘flight’ this year. The bar-headed geese’s awesome engineering defies logic, but then, so does our existence. We don’t do much to keep our world alive. Our natural instincts have been practically scraped off our souls through the years, and our intrinsic oneness with nature leaves us bashful at best. Only when our materialistic existence is threatened by a trauma or loss, or if we perceive that our life with all its New Year resolutions continues to remain imperfect, we worry about other ‘bigger ideas’ like World Hunger, Doomsday, and Big Boss Season 5 being rigged! So, here’s to 2012, whether it is ending or not with a cosmic bang, live the high life. Take flight!

Good afternoon read

Useful health page

I subscribe to Postnoon although I am not at home when it is delivered. Though I am in the habit of reading my morning newspapers, I love to catch up with Postnoon when I am back from college. When I read the paper, I have a vision of a young team brainstorming over ideas, and deliberating on what should go in today's edition. I say young because that is the impression I get when I read the paper. Keep up the good job, I wish you great luck!

I find the pages on health very helpful. It is full of useful information that would help people of all ages. It would be a bit more informative if you could include a box on the best doctors for each specialisation, which could come in handy for fixing appointments and all. Personally, I found the article on migraine very useful as my daughter has frequent bouts of the same. On a lighter note, the doctors could also tell what medicines to take. It would take the scary hospital visits away.

Matters of saving and spending

6,47,832,00,00,000 ply? The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) projected the loss due to power shortage was in excess of `32,000 crore in two months during the ‘sakala janula samme’. This impales the grandiose announcements just perfunctory.

hat’s this number all about? Can you read it? Probably, yes or probably not. Surely helmsmen in the State will not be able to count the exact number of zeros in the figure. The whopping investment figures soared each minute and peaked at close to `6.50 lakh crore and took the industry by surprise at the recently concluded Partnership Summit. Will this kind of an investment come at all? Or, how much of it will translate into reality? Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who appeared to be a chronic optimist, said, “Let’s hope that 100 per cent of it will be realised.” The entire officialdom heaved a sigh of great relief on ‘Friday the 13th’. They were not sure if their effort in bringing together industry leaders under one roof at the swanky Hyderabad International Convention Centre would actually pay off. As they waited with bated breath, someone among them did wield the magic wand that brought the much-yearned smiles on the face of Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy, who is otherwise fishing in proverbial troubled waters. Whether the effort yields rich dividends is a six-lakh-crorerupee question. The government made a grandiose announcement that delegates from 43 countries descended on the City to participate in the summit. That could be true too, but I could not find

Antecedents suspect

many foreigners on both days of the event at the venue. It was the question of ‘life and debt’ for the State. For a State reeling under a debt of a staggering `1,41,150 crore, translating into `17,000 per capita debt, the projection of the mind-boggling `6,47,832 lakh crore really comes a breather. If the said monies flow seamlessly into the State, it would create employment to 6,78,597 persons as projected. This could wipe off the debt, reap riches and make the State the best place to live in.

Power-surplus State The Chief Minister blustered that the State would be ‘power-surplus’ in a few years from now. While the current demand is 13,000 MW, the State’s installed capacity would soon be 15,000

MW and another 17,000 MW would be added in the years to come. It’s indeed a ‘power punch’ that covered up the power crunch— literally and figuratively. What guarantees is the State ready to provide to the enthusiastic entrepreneurs, if they come forward? Do we have sufficient production of electricity to meet the demand? How long does it take for establishing the new projects? Only GVK came forward to expand its capacity to 6,000 MW. But how much of support can the government offer? What happened to the NCC’s Sompeta Thermal Power Project and Coastal Power Company’s mega power unit again in Srikakulam district? Weren’t they stopped in their tracks after spending hundreds of crores?

Could the government curb the Communist-sponsored agitations which are backed by environmentalists? Kiran Kumar Reddy, who boisterously announced that the State would become power surplus, put a rider to his statement that went almost unnoticed. Boasting about the single window clearances for projects, he said, “Of course, the environmental clearance is not in my hands. You have to get it from the Centre.” The audience at the Partnership Summit were indeed flabbergasted by this. In the case of NCC, Jairam Ramesh revoked the environmental clearance that was already sanctioned. Doesn’t this scar the governance capabilities? Will an investor come to establish an industry in the absence of adequate power sup-

The list of projects circulated by the government astonished everyone, as most projects have been in the news for the last one decade. Some of them were discussed even in the Chandrababu Naidu-sponsored Partnership Summit, some nine years ago. And some companies are tainted. They don’t have the right credentials. Some entrepreneurs who claim to invest billions of dollars don’t have any web presence. And, google for ‘BR Shetty’ and see what suggestions the search engine throws up. The politically-motivated, State-sponsored and oppositionbacked slew of inquiries by apex investigation agencies are surely prodding the investors to think twice before they ink a deal with Andhra Pradesh. There is no guarantee that the industry would not mired in controversies after it goes to production and that the promoters wouldn’t be doing the rounds to court halls, facing probes and getting behind bars? Business confidence has indeed eroded in Andhra Pradesh. A final word about quid pro quo – the bone of contention in the criminal charges against the erstwhile powers that be. The government offers cheaper land if an industry is set up and provides employment to local people. What if the same thing is challenged in a court of law through public interest litigation?

Evaporating power

Politics of health

S

ow it is politics of health. Padayatra and hunger strike are not new methods of protest. These two best manifestations of dissent seem to have taken the health route. If the 1,400-km-long padayatra had ensured a manifold rise in tolerance levels of an otherwise impatient YS Rajasekhara Reddy, his son takes to fasting on and off to highlight one problem or the other of the society – refer his 48-hour ‘ryhthu deeksha’. Chandrababu Naidu began walking 15 km a day in the name of ‘rythu poru bata’. KCR’s historic hunger strike is all too well-known. Beginning with Gandhiji to every commoner who stokes rebellion, hunger strike is the best way for a permitted number of days.

Jaipal Reddy holds one of the most important portfolios in the country -Petroleum and Natural gas. This fetches cash every minute as much as it drains out resources, thanks to subsidies. This fuels friendships and also ignites differences between ministers. The other day when Reddy came to Nagaram to inaugurate an Indian Oil Corporation Ltd’s programme -- Sachal Swasthya Seva (Indian Oil Rural Mobile Healthcare Scheme), he had the audience in splits. Every now and then, it burns. Whenever he speaks to Pranab Mukherjee, the Finance Minister puts across the political reasons to defer price hike of petroleum. Oil companies,

N

however, move the knobs from sim to high seeking price hike. “You all think I have one of most important portfolios. But I am always under pressure,” he said. How volatile his position is?

he model was introduced in 1983 as the Land Rover Ninety and the Land Rover One Ten, the numbers representing the wheelbase in inches. The number was spelt out in full in advertising and in handbooks and manuals, and the vehicles also carried badges above the radiator grille which read ‘Land Rover 90’ or ‘Land Rover 110’, with the number rendered numerically.

An off-roader that runs as great on tarmacked roads, Land Rover's Freelander 2 justifies both terrains, and with ease, if we may add. Osama Salman gets behind Top Gear magazine's 'SUV of the Year'

Videogame of the week As the opening crawl of each film reminds us, the space-faring Star Wars tales we know and love don't occur in the far-flung future but, rather, in the distant past. It's appropriate, then, that Star Wars: The Old Republic does not represent the future of online role-playing games but a refinement of what has preceded it. Instead of opening a wormhole into an unknown dimension, BioWare has remained in the local galaxy, taking proven game mechanics and heightening them with the branching narrative and overall structure that have characterised the developer's output for many a year now. The result is an enjoyable massively multiplayer online game with knockout production values. The Old Republic's foundation is somewhat ordinary; what makes it great are the fine details that gild its edges.

THE PERFECT PET! SHELBY

S

helby is a seven-year-old German shepherd who saved the life of her four owners. Some time during the night Janet Walderbach was nudged awake by a whining Shelby. An irritated Janet put the whining dog outside. Instead of quieting down, Shelby began to bark wildly and scratch at the door. She wouldn’t stop until Janet, John and the kids were all out of the house. With everyone outside and feeling sick, the family went to the hospital where they were diagnosed and treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. They later found out that the carbon monoxide level in their home measured at 280ppm, a level that easily causes death.

ith the energy crisis looming, Hamsters could provide an answer. You know, those small fuzzy rodents that adults get for their kids as pets. But hamsters are more than pets, they are research subjects and research collaborators, testing nanotechnology designed to capture mechanical ‘bioenergy’ produced by living things as they... well, live. There are several species of hamsters that are kept as pets. Of the three dwarf hamster species, the ‘Robos’ are reputed to be the most athletic, running, on average, the equivalent of four human marathons every night, according to BBC research. But all hamsters run around at night. If their keeper provides them with an exercise wheel or exercise ball, they produce mechanical energy that can be captured.

KNOW YOUR DOG AFGHAN HOUND

T

he Afghan Hound is one of the oldest sighthound dog breeds. Distinguished by its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a ring curl at the end, the breed acquired its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan, where it was originally used to hunt hares and gazelles by coursing them. Afghan Hounds in UK surveys had a median lifespan of about 12 years. Major health issues are allergies, cancer, and hip dysplasia. The spectacular beauty of Afghan Hound dogs caused them to become highly desirable showdogs and pets, and they are recognised by all of the major kennel clubs in the English-speaking world.

Childhood revisited Test of Time

Fleme Varkey

Winner of the Man Booker Prize award 2011, Julian Barnes' The Sense of an Ending is the sort of novella you wished you had the genius to write

fleme.v@postnoon.com

A

t first glance you might dismiss it as a child's fantasy. Wait! It might be the story of a little girl but holds answers to a lot of questions we all seek. It's about reliving that part of us, which we have left behind and venture to think about only when we stop to take a rest from life's rat race. Little Eleanor Maud brings back all those memories of bruised knees, new friends, stolen glances, broken hearts, mindless pacts and the urge to grow up fast. With a set of distracted parents, a lesbian film star aunt, a best friend whose mother loves to cry at funerals, a Shirley Bassey impersonator and an old man who tap-dances his way into their lives, little Elly's life is a panorama of emotions and relationships. But the only person who knows her through and through is her elder brother, Joe. It was the day Martin Luther died that Eleanor was born and

as if trying to pay a tribute to his spirit, she tried to keep her life from falling to pieces. The book goes chronologically from late 1960s towards the present, against a backdrop of major global and national occurrences. Starting in 1968, the initial pages are peppered with the

excitement, pain and nervousness of growing up, and of Essex, Cornwall, New York and London. But 25 years later, we see Elly and Joe are fully grown and are closer than ever. Until, that is, they woke up to a setting sun, a single event that shattered their lives. Many of the characters in Elly's life can be compared to the author's description of Elly's best friend, Jenny Penny and her vagabond mother’s home. Winman writes, ‘They lived in a temporary world... that could be broken up and reassembled as easily and as quickly as Lego.’ The book's title When God was a Rabbit is rather misleading, though God has more or less an important role in this book. If you thought I was talking of seeking God, then the answer is, no. It is the name of little Elly's Belgian hare, a gift from her brother who promised to get her 'a proper friend' after he discovered that she was being sexually abused by their

old Jewish neighbour. There are some loose ends, which threaten to spoil a somewhat smooth run. And somewhere in the middle it loses us. Later on, Winman gets our attention back with the tragedy that threatens to disrupt the magical bond she had started off with. If one were to describe this book in a phrase it would be a story on love shared by siblings. Winman deserves credit for having the power to shape and shatter, often in the same passage. For a debut, this book manages to tug at your heartstrings once in a while, apart from few dragging ends and boring sections, Winman has got herself a winner. Definitely a one-time read. A second wind will be needed for some though. Title: When God was a Rabbit Author: Sarah Winman Publisher: Headline Review Pages: 336

hen Julian Barnes was shortlisted for last year's Booker Prize, it came as no surprise. He has been shortlisted three times previously for Arthur and George (2005), England, England (1998) and Flaubert's Parrot (1984). The Sense of an Ending, his first book in six years went straight to the bestseller list on publication. And this time, all who read it knew it was a winner. The Sense of Ending makes for a brilliant read not because it has an incredible plot, adorable characters or is filled with action, mystery, romance, twists and turns or any such. It is brilliant because it has none of this and is still one of the best books you are likely to read this year. Exquisitely written, brutally incisive, with a seemingly effortless sleight of phrase, the brief

150-page novella explores the idea of a mutable past through the recollections of 60-year-oldretiree Tony Webster. By his own admission, Tony Webster has had a rather unremarkable life — a career, a single marriage, a calm divorce, a grown up child, and now, a mundane retirement. A perfectly benign existence. Or so he believes until he is bequeathed a modest sum of money and a diary by a former girlfriend's mother, forcing him to re-examine his past. Through the course of the novel, he realises that the past is not as he remembers it. Not even close. In a remark that sums up the essential human condition, Tony remarks, “It strikes me that this may be one of the differences between youth and age: When we are young, we invent different futures for ourselves; when we are old, we invent different pasts for others.” The Sense of An Ending explores the themes of age, youth, history, memory, remorse in a way that’s both philosophical and poignant.

I wanted to be many things, but never a writer PIC: SRINIVAS SETTY

Sridala Swami is a noted poet, a children’s author, and a photographer as well, even if by chance. We get to know more about how she entered the world of writing

Sana Mirza sana.m@postnoon.com

A

n alumna of The Film and Television Institute of India, Sridala Swami spent the first few years of her career editing documentaries, short features and commercials, which she had to eventually give up. “I trained to be a film editor and it was work that I loved doing but there were several reasons for which I gave up editing. I was attached to a studio in Delhi, which just meant editing corporate films, or shorter version of ads that were about a minute long to begin with. It was souldestroying and I had very little to do with the kind of work I wanted to,” she explains, adding, “I was also editing documentaries, and I quite liked doing this work. As an editor, this meant lots more work

for very little money. Finally, I had become a mother and working a 12-hour shift was no longer an option. Once I stopped, I didn’t want to return.” Sridala paints the most poignant pictures with the least number of words. Her first poetry book, A Reluctant Survivor, was published by the Sahitya Akademi in 2007 and was shortlisted for the Shakti Bhatt First Book Award. While Sridala’s poems generally do not fall into any specific subject, her opinion is that poems are to be read and enjoyed without necessarily trying to find out what they are about. “The American poet Archibald MacLeish said, in his poem ‘Ars Poetica’ that ‘a poem should not mean but be’. I blame the way poetry is taught in schools. We’re taught to explain the living daylights out of a poem

until we no longer know how to just read and enjoy it,” she says. While some are born with a purpose in mind, some take years to find their calling. Sridala was one such person who confesses that she wanted to be so much more than just a writer. “I have been writing seriously for quite some time now and it’s hard to put an accurate number on these things. I can’t say — as writers frequently do — that I always knew I wanted to be a writer; I didn’t. I wanted to be many things, but never a writer. Once, I began, I then realised that is what I wanted to do,” she explains. Why the inclination towards writing for children? “I love reading children’s books! I read a lot of classic children’s books for the first time when I was 18 years or older — Winnie the Pooh, Russell Hoban, Joan Aiken... Alan

Garner,” she says, elaborating, “Until now I’ve been writing books for very young children — for first-time learners or those who are between the ages of three and six. That’s a different kind of challenge altogether because at that age, children need a strong visual and imaginative element. I’d like to write for older children, too, some day,” she expresses. An accidental photographer, as she would like to call herself, her first tryst with the camera was in the form of a project for the Centre for Knowledge Societies in Bangalore and Delhi that was commissioned by a friend. “That’s how it started and that kind of work kept trickling in. The difficult project was of course, the exhibition on Hamburg that I did courtesy the Goethe Zentrum, in 2009. I was shooting in a city I

had never been to before, in the space of five days, with a brief to exhibit 50 photographs accompanied by text. It was hard, but it was a lot of fun. I don’t think I experienced Hamburg except through my camera lens,” she says grinning. Some of Sridala’s work is on exhibit at present in Sophia College, Mumbai. She may have written just three children’s books in the last five years but Sridala’s day is quite packed nonetheless. “At present I curate a weekly half-hour called The Poetry Mohalla for Sarojini Naidu School of Communication’s community radio, Bol Hyderabad 90.4fm. Apart from that, I am putting together the manuscript of my second collection of poetry and I have a children’s book due out later this year, from Pratham Books,” she informs, while signing off.

Exploring complexities

Being in love and breaking up are like the two sides of a coin. The end of a relationship brings along pain and mourning, but also hopes that gloom will not last long. Today Postnoon helps you see things on a lighter note and maybe, after this, breaking up will not seem all that bad Isha Mukoo Isha.m@postnoon.com

T

hey say, ‘Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all’. It’s true because love is one experience that everyone dreams of having. But relationships are fragile and need the utmost care. A careless word, an unkind act, or a thoughtless deed might spell the end of a relationship. Reel life shows us candy-floss romances and often fails to highlight the layers that go into making a bond last. There are link-ups and then there are break-ups and then comes the worst, the ‘getting over your ex’ part. Oscar Wilde makes breakups sound very trivial when he says, “When a love comes to an end, weaklings cry, efficient ones instantly find another love, and the wise already have one in reserve.” Yashasvie Goel, a concept supervisor with an event company, feels that music is what comes to her rescue. “The best way to lighten up and try to get back to normalcy is karaoke. I would love to go and scream out my heart and sing as loud as I can.” How did music help her, we ask. “I did go through some rough patches and of course it does hurt. There was one time I went on a partying spree, which was again quite therapeutic. It did not probably strike me then

and moving on that all I had to do was go to a karaoke bar and sing my heart out. Although not everyone would want to do that, I feel it’s one of the best ways,” she replies. A long trip can also do you wonders and if you have your closest pals for company, then nothing like it. Ravi K, a creative director, felt shattered when his four-year relationship came to an end. He felt the best thing he could do to reduce the pain was take a trip somewhere. “I went to Tosh for 10 days with my friends after I broke up with my girlfriend for cheating on me. It’s a small town in Himachal and it gave me time and space to refresh myself. I discussed the problems with my friends and finally I was much better after I was back,” he explains. The memories of the past do haunt him though, as he says, “She was a part of my life for

SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 2012

quite some time and it does upset me at times when I see her letters or pictures but on the other hand, I love the single-tag I am wearing right now.” Well, now you have singing and travel to beat the break-up blues, but Shonita Joshi, a Google employee, thinks television is her comfort blanket. She feels one should just let go of the emotions and first thing one should do is watch TV since it distracts you from the situation for a while. “It might sound stupid but the first thing one should do is watch TV for a while; the reason being that it will distract you for sometime till the mind adjusts to the shock. One can go out, meet friends and do all the kinds of fun stuff but it’s only time that will heal you up completely,” she shares. While Shonita feels one should

watch TV and eventually let the emotional baggage go, Supriya P (name changed on request), a working professional, who is recently recuperating from a break-up feels one should do anything else but watch movies or television or listen to songs as it might triggers the memories. “One should go for shopping, go out of the city and travel to some beautiful places with friends, go to the gym and workout and after all this get back to work and perform with full gusto. That is one of the best things one can do; engaging yourself after that break keeps your mind off the thoughts and eventually it heals up with time,” she shares, and cautions, “I personally feel one should never watch movies or listen to songs during the recovery period as there is some song or some scene in every movie for sure that will bring back memories of your ex and you end up feeling miserable all over again.” Letting go of someone is not an easy process; moments spent with your beloved; and pictures or letters are always there in your mind. One can just let go the past and indulge in activities that you were once scared to try out or do something that gives you back your balance in life. Instead of moping around, a little colour is all you need. After all, life is all about moving on.

he Delhi High Court judgement in July 2009 to decriminalise homosexuality was perhaps the most historic event in the lives of the queer folk in India. It helped many people come out of the closet and inspired me to start a blog so I could come out to my family and friends. But, for the fear of being ostracised by the society, I kept it anonymous. The stigma associated with being gay in our society prevented me from openly expressing what I felt. I discontinued the blog after a while when I realised I could not write what I truly felt. Today, I no longer need any other means to tell people that I am a lesbian. However, what I have come to realise is that coming out is an ongoing process. Even after coming out to my parents, friends and colleagues, I continue to meet new people or old acquaintances and the process begins all over again. While some friends/acquaintances pretend to be happy for you and end the conversation quickly there are others who wish you’d get yourself checked by a psychiatrist to ensure you don’t have a mental illness. It has been over two years since the Delhi High Court read out Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code but the society continues to target homosexuals. While we await the Supreme Court verdict in February 2012, we hope that the Indian society will demonstrate more inclusiveness and cease to treat equality as just an abstract concept.

My boyfriend and I have been together for quite some time now and we plan to tie the knot in a year’s time. I am disturbed because he still keeps in touch with one of his ex-girlfriend’s. Though he says they barely talk, I am upset. Please advice. Srisha J Begumpet

Dear doubting Thomas,

W

hat has he been doing with you all this while? When he had such an option open he should have gone for that chick instead of staying stuck with you. Moreover, old wine gets better with age. For all you know the two are planning to elope. Since you are hell bent on proving that he is cheating on you why don’t you go the whole hog and hire some detectives. Come to think of it, how about tit-for tat? If he’s having his share of fun, then there should be nothing that should prevent you from touching bases with your exes and who knows you might finally find ‘luurve’. And even after this, if the problem persists then probably you may not hear the wedding bells in the near future.

Don’t want to do only remakes, says Hrithik

Karan roped in Hrihik to play the

protagonist and with Agneepath ready to hit screens on January 26, expectations are high and people are likely to compare Hrithik with Amitabh. But he is unruffled and believes, “If you do something in your own way, in your individual way, then it will stand out. People will not compare.” Despite having such an impressive body of work, he says he can’t ‘act’. He said: “My premise is that I can only act well if I am in that character. I have to know everything about my character. If I am not living it, then I can’t act. If you ask me to imitate or act, I can’t do it. Others can because they have that talent. I can’t act, so I am bad actor.” IANS

Bloody Money to hit theatres in March

P

roducer Mahesh Bhatt’s forthcoming action thriller Blood Money has been advanced for a March release. This much-awaited film was to hit the screens on April 13 but now the makers have announced to release it on March 20. Directed by Vishal Mahadkar the movie stars Kunal Khemu and Amrita Puri in lead roles. The film is about a young man’s journey back to his love and redemption after his dreams turn into nightmares. PTI

rjun Rampal has begun 2012 with a new fragrance. After opening a nightclub in Delhi and with an impressive career graph, the national award winning actor has now launched aLive and wants to gift it to Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. “I think I just feel certain things are extension of you. This is a very natural progression of good quality which I can give to all around the world the sense of fragrance. And being an actor

it helps me to get that opportunity. We worked hard on it for two years,” Arjun said. The model-turnedactor-turned-producer said he would like to gift the perfume to two stars so that they can smell alike. “Among female actresses, I would gift this perfume to Deepika and among males I might give it to Ranbir Kapoor so that they both smell a bit alike,” he added.

Arjun has been an integral part in the development of his nouveau brand from the initial stage. “It’s not an easy business. I am involved in only the creative side. At the end of the day I can make a movie, I can make a good dish, but people should like it because they are the judge. If they like it, great and if they dislike it then I will go back and smell some coffee and bring some better cologne,” said the 39year-old. Arjun, a doting father, astute businessman and loving husband who has been extremely busy with his projects these days, doesn’t mind hectic lifestyle. “When you get the opportunity, then you must work. There were times when I was sitting at home with no work. You must run against time and manage it. Most importantly, I have to thank my team of aLive that has managed with no wastage of time,” he said. IANS

Elizabeth Olsen

JOINS Daniel Radcliffe

IN DARLINGS T

he Year of Elizabeth Olsen has stretched into 2012. The 2011 It-Girl, who made waves with her performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene, has reportedly joined the cast of Kill Your Darlings opposite Daniel Radcliffe. Per Variety, Olsen will play Edie Parker, the wealthy scholastic girlfriend of Jack Keourac (newly cast Jack Huston from Boardwalk Empire) in the film, which focuses on the murder of a young girl at Columbia University in 1944 and the subsequent birth of the Beat Generation. Radcliffe is set to play Allen Ginsberg, the famous poet who was brought to life on-screen in 2010 by James Franco in Howl. Olsen’s already poised to enjoy a big 2012; the actor has two films heading to the Sundance Film Festival this month (Red Lights and Liberal Arts), and she was rumored to star opposite Dakota Fanning in Very Good Girls. Expect Darlings in theaters sometime in 2013.

Nominees for DGA awards announced T

he Directors Guild of America’s nominees for 2011’s Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary include Martin Scorsese, Steve James, James Marsh, Joe Berlinger & Bruce Sinofsky, and Richard Press. DGA President Taylor

Hackford says this year’s doc nominees “take audiences on a journey, whether casting light on injustice or exploring the human condition in all of its nuance, cruelty, creativity and triumph. Our nominees represent the best in documentary filmmaking and I congratulate each of them on a job well done.” On January 28, winners will be announced at an awards dinner hosted by Kelsey Grammar.

Descendants and Moneyball Scripter awards’ finalists “T

he Descendants, Moneyball, Tinker, Tailor and Soldier Spy are among the finalists for the USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honours both the screenwriter who adapted a literary work and the original author of that work. A Dangerous Method and Jane Eyre round out the nominations for the Scripters, which will be presented on February 18 at USC. The nominees were chosen by a 32-person selection committee made up of filmmakers, critics and academics. Jane Eyre was perhaps the most surprising entry on the list, which left off Hugo, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Help, War Horse and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, among others. Typically, the Scripter nominations match about three of the five Oscar choices for Adapted Screenplay. The winners coincide about half the time. At the upcoming Scripter ceremony, Paul Haggis will be given the 2012 USC Scripter Literary Achievement Award.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

I can repeat Gordon comes back 2011: Joker strong, wins Stage 12 A

US driver Robby Gordon steers his Hummer during the 2012 Dakar Rally Stage 12 Arequipa-Nasca in Peru, on January 13, 2012. US driver Robby Gordon won the stage. AFP NASCA: Robby Gordon, who faces Dakar Rally disqualification after his Hummer was deemed to have broken race regulations, won the 12th stage Friday, and then blasted rivals for questioning his integrity. Gordon, who has appealed the stewards’ decision imposed on Wednesday, came home ahead of Russia’s Leonid Novotskiy, in a Mini, and Ginel De Viliers of South Africa, driving a Toyota. France’s Stephane Peterhansel, who was sixth on Friday after his Mini got bogged down in a sand dune, remained on top of the overall standings. Peterhansel, a six-time motorcycle champion and threetime car winner, is 1hr 44min ahead of Gordon who is fourth overall. He is also 20 minutes in front of second-placed Nani Roma, who was fifth on Friday, and more than an hour ahead of

De Villiers, who is in third, with just two days left to run. Gordon vented his anger at Peterhansel and Nani over the ongoing controversy which centres on the Hummer’s tyre-inflation system. “I showed the plug that everyone’s been talking about that gives me all super power and I just proved that Minis are for girls, because we beat them by twenty minutes,” Gordon told www.dakar.com. “Last night I went through a whole thing and went on Youtube. You can go to Robby Gordon - Dakar - Air inflation; check it out, it’s posted and explains the whole system. “It’s the same system that the French officials approved one

year ago and now they’ve changed their minds. I’m pissed at Stephane and I’m pissed at Nani for challenging my character about being a cheater and today I kicked their asses.” Meanwhile, Peterhansel said he was concerned when his vehicle sunk in the sand on Friday. “As soon as we crossed the first dunes, we went over a crest and behind it was a sink hole. We got stuck. We lost at least 20 minutes, which meant that we would also lose the lead in the general standings,” he said. “We cleared some sand and moved the car forward centimetre by centimetre to get out. Afterwards, I took risks to claw the time back. That was the 50km where I’ve attacked the most during the whole rally. In the end we caught up with Nani several kilometres from the finish, so he must have had problems too.”

part from Roger Federer, Nadal, Murray, he has to face stiff competition from a pack of taleneted youngsters hungry and determined to make their mark. But Novak Djokovic believes he can repeat another 41-match winning run with a successful Australian Open title defence. That is the effect a terrific 2011 has on Djokovic: he was unbeaten till June and bagged 10 titles, including three slams: one can’t blame him if he says he can repeat it again after such a record. “My success gives me a reason to believe that I can win again. Why not?” Djokovic was quoted as saying by the AAP. “It doesn’t make any sense to be anything other than optimistic. I need to believe in my qualities and my abilities and I need to believe that I can repeat the success. “Of course it is going to be an incredibly difficult task to achieve, but you never know — nothing is really impossible.” Djokovic comes to defend his title here at Melbourne after beating Federer to win the pre-Open exhibition event in Abu Dhabi. Last year, he crushed Murry in the final in straightsets, which provided him the

momentum to outclass second-ranked Nadal in all the six finals they played. Nadal, a 10-time major champion, must quickly find his form after being ousted from the season-ending World Tour Finals without making the semis: he later confessed to have a “little bit less passion for the game”. The Spaniard’s subsequent loss to Gael Monfils in Doha to open 2012 also did little to help him up his confidence. But Federer, Murray and Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga seem upbeat. Despite a back problem that cut short his Qatar campaign, Federer enters the tourney with a 20-match winning streak. Not to mention his intention to atone for his first slam-less year since 2002. “To win grand slams would be nice,” the Swiss ace said. “I feel like it might be around the corner ... I’m very happy and upbeat about what’s to come.”

Sutil to face trial at month-end F

ormer Force India driver Adrian Sutil will appear in court over a fight at a nightclub in China in which he allegedly injured the owner of a Formula One team with a glass. The Munich district court says it will hold the trial from January 30-31. The prosecutors have asked that the German driver be awarded a suspended oneyear sentence. Sutil is charged with causing serious injuries to Renault F1 team executive Eric Lux, part

owner of the team now renamed Lotus. Lux was cut in the neck and required two dozen stitches. The incident happened at a party to celebrate Lewis Hamilton’s victory at the China Grand Prix in Shanghai in April. Sutil had claimed last year that he only wanted to spill his drink on Lux and that causing the injury was completely “unintentional and accidental.” Lux filed a complaint with Munich prosecutors, who have now charged Sutil.

Bowlers save face for India

n India bowled far better on the second day. They had

almost presented the match in a platter to Australia on the first day by following their disastrous batting with extremely poor bowling. n The wicket gave help if the bowlers put the ball in

the right place and on a good length. Zaheer Khan’s last over on the first day had indicated that. Umesh Yadav picked up where Zaheer left off last night. n Yadav bowled an accurate and hostile spell in the

morning session and was awarded with three wickets. Zaheer followed after lunch and picked up quick wickets. Ishant Sharma supported well and picked up the prize wicket of David Warner n Warner finally fell for 180 off just 159 balls and by

the time he got out, Australia were in total control. The left-hander continued where he left off overnight, playing aggressively. He was a treat to watch. n India managed to dismiss Shaun Marsh, Ricky

Pointing, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin cheaply. The cracks in the wicket are beginning to widen and India will rue not getting to at least 350 in the first innings.

Warner the next Gilly? PERTH: David “Whirlwind” Warner was the new darling of the Australian media Saturday after his rapid-fire century against India earned him comparisons with Adam Gilchrist. The 25-year-old cracked a sizzling unbeaten 104 on Friday as Australia ended the opening day of the third Test at 149-0 in reply to India’s paltry 161. Warner brought up his century in just 69 balls, placing him equal fourth on the list of Test cricket’s fastest tons alongside Shivnarine Chanderpaul but behind Jack Gregory (67 balls), Gilchrist (57) and Viv Richards (56). Several newspapers gave him the moniker “Whirlwind Warner” with The Australian comparing him to Gilchrist, the attacking former left-hander con-

“IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN ADAM GILCHRIST REBORN AS DAVID WARNER SMASHED THE FASTEST CENTURY EVER BY A TEST OPENER,” SAID THE AUSTRALIAN sidered one of the greatest wicketkeeper-batsmen in the history of the game. “It might have been Adam Gilchrist reborn as David Warner smashed the fastest century ever by a Test opener, taking the long handle to an Indian attack short on heart and answers,” the newspaper said.

“Not since Gilchrist smashed the fastest Ashes ton ever off just 57 balls on the same ground five years ago, has an Australian ever cut so loose in Test cricket.” Under the headline “Aussie Master Blaster”, the West Australian heralded the team’s new hero, while having a dig at the lacklustre Indian team. “The only way India could stop the left-hander was for Umesh Yadav to send a ball through the batsman’s helmet, flooring Warner with his score on 80,” it said. “But, unlike some of his opponents in their innings, Warner wanted to fight on.” The Sydney Morning Herald was equally gushing in its praise of his knock on a WACA ground renowned for its pace and bounce. Pacers give Team India breather PERTH: Paceman Umesh Yadav claimed three Australian wickets to give beleaguered India some respite on the second day of the third Test in Perth on Saturday. Resuming at 149 without loss after India were routed for 161 on the opening day, Australia were 333 for six when the paper was going to press. Opener David Warner finally was caught out on 180 off Ishant Sharma after reaching his century in just 69 balls on Friday.

Captain Michael Clarke was out on 18. Siddle was blazing at 28. Although the home side led by 95 runs, Yadav’s spirited spell was a welcome shift in fortunes for the tourists after a dismal opening day. India also trail 2-0 in the four-Test series. It could have been an even better session for India with Warner dropped on 126 by first slip Virat Kohli from the bowling of Zaheer Khan.

However, Indian skipper and wicketkeeper M.S. Dhoni may also have been at fault for not attempting a regulation catch slightly to his left when Khan found the edge as Warner attempted to advance down the wicket. Instead Dhoni watched the ball pass and Kohli juggled the ball before dropping the catch as he lunged to his right. Warner made the most of the chance to reach 150 from 128

balls, with 17 fours and four sixes. He and Ed Cowan put on 214 for the first wicket, just 14 short of the record opening stand in Tests at the ground, before Cowan was bowled by Yadav for 74. Local batsman Shaun Marsh again went cheaply, caught in slips by V.V.S. Laxman off Yadav for 11 — the left-hander has now made just 14 runs in the series at 3.50. Former skipper Ricky Ponting made seven before being bowled by Yadav. AFP

Game’s sold its soul: Wenger LONDON: Arsene Wenger has accused rival clubs of manipulating the Premier League fixture schedule for their own benefit by “directly” influencing broadcasters, saying the game had “sold its soul”.
