Greedy husband kills wife CRIME Mohd Subhan mohd.s@postnoon.com

varice and cruelty have no limit, it seems. In an apparent coldblooded murder for more dowry, a young woman was led to commit suicide by her greedy husband in LB Nagar basti under the Jeedimetla police limits three days ago. Jeedimetla police sub inspector Veeranna said R Swarna, 24, had been married for barely to R Venugopal. She was found dead in her husband’s home three days ago. Although it appears to be a case of suicide, according to the police, initial investigation throws suspicion on Venugopal and his family, who had reportedly been harassing Swarna for dowry and had even threatened to kill her if their demands were not met. At the time of the wedding, Swarna’s father G Madhav Rao, 60, an agriculturist in Budharam village in Ghanpur mandal, had given `6 lakh in cash, three kilograms of silver, 20 tolas of gold, two acres of land and a 600 yard-flat. However, her husband was not satisfied with this and had begun to nag her soon after the marriage took place. However, her parents could not meet his
increasing demands. Soon, Venugopal began to physically abuse Swarna for the ‘inadequate’ dowry. According to the police, a few days earlier,
Sisters loot their benefactor CRIME Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
I
n a dark deed, two women who were given shelter to live and work in Secunderabad by their aged relative, robbed her of 20 tola of gold ornaments worth `6 lakh after tying her up with the help of their boyfriends. N Mangamma, 72, and her son M Venkateshwara Chary, 47, lived in a pent house at Boudha Nagar in Secunderabad. Venkat is a goldsmith. Both of them live a comfortable life. Some time ago, a relative of theirs rang up from Nalgonda if two sisters, Swathy and Sneha, could get a room on rent in
Mangamma’s house. Swathy, 29, was married and has four kids and was struggling to make ends meet. Sneha too was in need of a job to earn a living. Feeling charitable Mangamma and her son agreed. The sisters started living in a portion of the house for a nominal rent. On Tuesday, Swathy called on Mangamma on the pretext of paying rent. Venkat was not at home. When the lady opened the door, Swathy stepped in with two men, who were later identified as Feroz and his cousin. They caught hold of the aged woman, tied her hands and legs and inserted rags in her mouth to prevent her from screaming. The accused then relieved Mangamma of all her gold ornaments that she was wearing and collected some more valuables before fleeing the scene. The incident came to light when Venkat returned home to find the door open and no sign of his mother. Upon searching the house, he found ehr lying unconscious in one corner, bound and gagged. Her hands bore bruises, a clear sign of struggling. With the help of neighbours, Venkat shifted his mother to a hospital and lodged a police complaint. Crime inspector of Chilkalguda police station Khaja Moinuddin told Postnoon that Feroz and his cousin, who is yet to be identified, have had a close link with Swathy and Sneha. But Moinuddin said initial investigation revealed that both the sisters are in the game and the men are their lovers and accomplices. The police have sent a squad to their native place and alerted other stations to get whereabouts of the criminals.
Venugopal took his wife to an isolated place and threatened to kill her if her parents didn’t meet his demands and then left the place, leaving her there alone. Helpless, Swarna had to seek help from passers-by to return home. However, the abuse continued. Her hapless father told her maternal uncle about Swarna’s plight, who called up Venugopal and tried to reason with him about the family’s plight. This calmed Venugopal for a few days, but he once again began harassing his wife for dowry. Allegedly, Venugopal beat up his wife once again three days ago and asked her why she did not commit suicide before leaving the house in a huff. Fed up with the harassment, Swarna is said to have locked herself in her bedroom and hanged herself with her dupatta. However, the police are also investigating the possibility of murder and a dowry case has been registered against Venugopal. Soon after Swarna’s death, Venugopal went absconding. Assistant commissioner of Balanagar, S Damodhar, has started investigations and a police team has been formed to nab him. The girl’s father has alleged murder and said that his daughter had suffered extremely cruel treatment that no other girl her age might have suffered. He wanted capital punishment for the man who despite having received so much wealth was greedy enough to kill his wife.

Political opponents grossly underestimated the ability of anti-graft cases to sway public sentiment against Jagan. The YSRC camp united to portray these as a political vendetta on the son of YSR.

T
he wind of Jagan sentiment has swept away the Congress and the TDP with a solitary win for TRS. The rebel YSRC, which had challenged the mighty Congress party on its way to a virtual win with it leading in 15 of the 18 Assembly (two officially declared) seats at the time of going to the press. The Congress had established a convincing lead in Narsapuram and Ramachandrapuram while TRS on its way to victory at Parakal. The YSRC camp was so erupted since morning that its office on Road No 45 looked like a ‘Kumbh Mela’ where hundreds of people gathered, sloganeered, distributed sweets, splashed one another with colour, and in the melee, the
party’s minority leader Rehman who was carried by party supporters on their shoulders opened fire in the air. He fired four rounds. He was placed under arrest later. “It is a slap on the face for Congress. Kiran should resign,” said YSR Congress Sevadal president Kotimreddy Vinay Reddy. The TDP, which drew zero had

nothing much to say. K Dayakar Reddy said the result was not unexpected. “YSRC won due to wave of sympathy. The Congress camp was silent. Former minister Shankar Rao said, “This is the defeat of the government. This is a defeat of the corrupt ministers. CM is solely responsible for this. It is not a defeat of the Congress.” BJP party resident Kishan Reddy, said the YSRC played mischief by spreading rumours about BJP tacitly supporting it in Parakal. “That’s why we lost.” Meanwhile, Jagan’s wife Bharati, sister Sharmila and mother Vijayamma drove to Chanchalguda jail to congratulate him. They carried sweets and prasadam. (Inputs by Inkeshaf Ahmed, Sudeshna Koka, Anubha Singh, Rahul Ramakrishna, and Mohd Subhan)

t pre-dawn, before the world woke up, some 200-strong police led by the assistant commissioner of police M Kistaiah took positions and laid a virtual siege to the Chanchalguda central jail where YSRC chief Jagan Mohan Reddy is lodged. The police closed the Dabeerpura-Nalgonda cross road, a half kilometre stretch, to thoroughfare. Nobody was allowed to use the road and the police kept a hawkish eye on the goings on around. Media persons were allowed to take their station but no civilians were permitted to enter this stretch.

N As the day wore on and it became evident that the YSRC was galloping unbridled towards victory in the 18 Assembly bypolls, many people came out on the streets to distribute chocolates and sweets. Around noon, Jagan’s wife Bharti, sister Sharmila and mother Vijayamma drove in to meet Jagan. They were the only ones allowed inside. Efforts were made to take out a procession to the jail gate but it was thwarted by a determined police force.
ot unexpected, the rules of the game have suddenly changed. The umpire has vanished without trace. The sweep by the renegade YS Jaganmohan Reddy in the 18 by-election results is going to upstage the Kiran government as the bypoll is nothing but a semi-final to the crucial 2014 general elections. This is the second consecutive defeat this year for the Congress. Sources in the Congress camp have dropped hints that New Delhi had asked the CM Kiran Kumar Reddy and Botsa Satyanarayana to ensure victory of Congress candidates in at least six of the 18 seats. This, the party satraps impressed upon the two that with Chiranjeevi’s PRP now in the Congress camp, this should not be an unattainable feat. The
Party offices at 10am Congress: Only one cleaner, one attendant (security) and a whole lot of media corps. TDP: Sprawling NTR Bhavan is empty but for security. Media corps, again, in attention. BJP: Only a male receptionist. Our reporter Anubha seeks out party leader Kishan Reddy on phone and he blames it on ‘naughty whispers claiming the BJP favours YSRC.’ TRS: Virtually empty. But people soon started trooping in. Madhav Reddy, MLC, was the only leader. A TRS leader K Satyanarayana said, “We have 100 per cent victory. We contested 1 seat and won!” YSRC: Festivities and celebrations. Party’s minority leader Rehman was lifted high as he took out his revolver and fired in the air.
message is clear: if not, look out for alternative jobs. The Assembly position is tenuous for the Congress party now. Supposing that of the 294 seats, Congress has 153 members as against the magic number of 148. Four Congress MLAs — D Chandrasekhar Reddy and S Jayamani have expressed sympathy with the YSRC and two other Alla Srinivas and VSK Ranga Rao have resigned but not accepted. This means in a trial of strength the effective number with the Hand is 149. With the 7 MIM, the ruling front strength comes to 156. The government can cling on with desperation for a while but the situation becomes touchy for the simple reason that the Congress MLAs know where the wind is blowing and therefore more desertion is possible as days go by. “The only relieving factor for the Congress is that the main opposition party, the TDP,
is in no position to step in, in case the Congress is dislodged,” said a senior Congress leader. This would give the Congress and its allies a chance to pull on for a while but this theory would fall flat if more desertion takes place. The Congress leadership in Delhi, it is clear, has to find a strong steward to lead it in the 2014 elections because Andhra Pradesh is too important to be left floating. Forty-two MPs are part of the life-saving oxygen equipment that keeps the Congress ticking in Delhi. Sources say the Congress will have to come to terms with Jagan Mohan Reddy before the 2014 elections if it wants to stay afloat in the midst of so many scams and flop governance. The Congress leadership’s miserable performance, especially of the ‘Yuvraj’ Rahul Gandhi is a grim reminder that the awe and glamour of the Nehru family is not going to rescue the party.

fter the scorching heat little showers followed by heavy rains were welcomed with open arms. Some parts of the City witnessed the first showers on Thursday and not just children but elders were also seen enjoying the cloudy weather and the sudden downpour. “Since the last few days it’s been very cloudy, we were waiting for the rains and today it finally did. The feeling is amazing. Hyderabad rains are beautiful,” says Meghna Reddy, a student. This year the temperatures went to as high as 46 degrees. Hyderabadis were waiting for the rains to bring respite from the rising temperatures. According to the met department, 2.2 millime-
tres of rain was recorded yesterday. However, experts say that these are pre-monsoon showers and the south-west monsoons are expected in various parts of AP in coming three to four days. Cold winds, the smell of wet mud, sounds of thunderstorm, wet and clean roads, puddles and small streams of water — these simple sights and smells make monsoons loved by all. Like Gilbert K Chesterton said, “And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow.”

t is a matter of pride to own a house. Undoubtedly, it gives relief from nagging landlords and uncertainty of living as a tenant. However, the buyer should also should check and assess the future difficulties that may arise when owning a house. Comfort, convenience and luxury are the key factors for buying a house. The City real estate market is driven by the people who own it for living in them. Almost 80 per cent of the people buy property to stay, compared to 20 per cent who buy property as an investment or to gift to their children for future needs, said Jaiveer Reddy, president, CREDAI. Real estate is a long term investment; the buyer should look for long term profits rather than immediate returns. Investment in real estate has an average of 10 per cent appreciation ever year — based on the figures for the last 30 years. The market has temporary ups and downs but mostly have an appreciation in a long run, he said. Buying a house is a safe and secure investment. Investing in a stock market or a business brings a high possibility of capital erosion. When it comes to buying a

house, the chances of capital erosion are very less. As it is a priority sector, the government is also offering income-tax benefits for the house owner. The interest paid on housing loan for up to `1.5 lakh can be deducted from taxable income. The buyer also can have a tax exemption up to `1 lakh (Section 80C) on the
principal amount, provided he is residing in the house or living in other city for a job purpose, said Chalapathy Rao, vice president, APREDA. On the flip side, the annual returns a buyer gets from investment is limited to 2 to 4 per cent after deducting taxes and maintenance costs. These have to be paid irrespective of the occupation of the property. It is very important to buy a house, where there is high potential to rent. If it is vacant the owner loses money, he said. It is always safe and good to buy a house for living, where the instalment is almost near to the rent of the property. Even after paying instalment for 20 years, the buyer can slowly own a house. The rental value would only increase in a longer run, where in buyer has to pay a fixed instalment. The buyer also should look at security of the job and the proximity of the travel. Many times, the buyer choose a property
in the far off locations from the City, end up paying heavy petrol bills and losing valuable time. It is very important to calculate the costs of petrol, (which are ever rising), time, depreciation and maintenance of the vehicle before deciding between the properties, Rao explained. Buying a house is definitely best option in the outskirts of the City as the real estate prices are at the lowest, provided the buyer doesn’t need time and money on travelling. However, the market prices in and around HITEC City gained momentum and touched the peak, due to less supply of flats, he added. The interest rates on housing loan are hovering around 11 per cent (floating, monthly compounded). The buyers can avail a loan of almost 30 times of monthly income without crossing 70 per cent of the property value. The net salary of an individual should not fall beyond 40 per cent of his gross salary after including the proposed instalment in various deductions from the gross salary. The banks will also check the repayment capability of the customer by various ways before providing him a loan, said a senior assistant manager of a nationalised bank.

Riding the leverage tiger Nupur Pavan Bang and Amulya Chirala
I
had a strange dream last night. I saw a young lad sitting in front of a computer and it’s raining thousand rupee notes. He is soaked in those notes, enjoying every bit of it. I look closer to see what is on the computer screen. I wake up with a start as soon as I realised that the screen was nothing but a derivatives trading platform and the young lad was Srikanth. I had explained futures to him a few days back. What has been bothering me is that I did not explain the downside risks of investing in futures as profoundly as I should have. Futures are extremely leveraged contracts. And if not used wisely, they can wipe out fortunes. Often people mistake them as magic wands due to this very property of leverage. Let me explain. Leverage in finance is very much like the leverage we learn about in physics. It amplifies effort, or in this case, the impact of our investment. When one buys a futures contract, she does not need to pay the full amount. For example, if you were to buy 100 shares of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), you would need to pay a total of `72,700 (`727 per share times 100). On the other hand, in the case of Reliance Futures, one contract of 100 shares costs only a small percentage. This amount is known as the initial margin and is calculated based on a system known as Standard Portfolio Analysis of Risk
(SPAN). This system takes into account the volatility of the underlying stock. Let us say that according to SPAN, the initial margin should be 10% of the contract value (`72,700). This would mean that you end up paying only `7,270 to control 100 shares of RIL. That means you are highly leveraged. Now if the stock price goes up, you gain as the price of RIL futures also go up and you can sell them at a profit. Let’s say you sell them at `750 — your profit will be a total of `2,300 (750-727 times 100
Banks call on G20 to avert global recession WASHINGTON: The global banking lobby IIF on Thursday called on Group of 20 leaders to act decisively and jointly at their summit next week to avert the risk of another worldwide recession. The head of the Institute of International Finance, Charles Dallara, said the G20 summit in Mexico on Monday and Tuesday is a “potential decisive point.” “The risk of a global recession again, for the second time in four years, is very real,” Dallara warned at a news conference in Washington. The IIF managing director, who negotiated the private
sector’s writedown of Greek debt, a crucial part of an international bailout of the eurozone country, presented the concerns in an open letter to the G20. The IIF highlighted economic challenges facing “many” countries, “some lingering from the 2008-2009 crisis and exacerbated now by strains in Europe.” The uncertainty about Europe’s future is disrupting financial markets and putting the global economy at risk, said the IIF. The IIF cautioned against regulatory reforms at a time of weak market confidence. AFP
Risk management is akin to a dialysis machine. If it doesn’t work, you might have a noble obituary, but you’re dead. Benjamin Golub, economist shares). Hence your profit in percentage is 2,300/7,270 times 100, that is 31% on an invest-
ment of `7,270 Here is where we need to remember that leverage doesn’t always mean more profits, it merely amplifies things, so in case of a loss, the amount lost is also multiplied by the same factor. Let’s assume that the stock price goes down by the same `23. That is you sell RIL futures at a loss. Once again, your losses are much higher than they would be if you had invested in the stock instead of the futures. Unfortunately, people forget that the prices can go down. They feel that they can make huge profits with little investment in the case of futures. And I must explain this to Srikanth before he starts dreaming of big money and invests recklessly in the futures market. The exchanges do take measures to ensure that the risks are taken care of by adjusting the initial margin on a daily basis. The investors get margin calls to top up their initial margin accounts in the case of a falling market. This keeps the investors informed of how much they are losing or gaining on a daily basis. The investors can close their positions or take offsetting positions before they end up losing a lot. But this system of marking to market everyday also means that in addition to profit or loss at the end of your contract, you have to keep track of cash flows needed to stay invested. Otherwise, a sharp move can cause your position to be closed out prematurely when the contract would have been profitable at expiration.
OPEC target unchanged SINGAPORE: Oil rose in Asian trade on Friday after OPEC kept to its crude output quotas and vowed to eliminate overproduction, analysts said. The market was also supported by hopes that the US Federal Reserve will step in with new stimulus measures to bolster the world’s largest economy. New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in July, was up 51 cents to $84.42 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for August delivery gained 63 cents to $97.80 in morning trade. “Oil futures rose as the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries agreed to keep its collective oil output ceiling unchanged... at 30 million barrels per day (mbpd),” said Phillip Futures in a market com-
`86.56
mentary. OPEC Secretary General Abdullah El-Badri said member countries had been asked to cut production by a total of 1.6 mbpd to meet the group’s 30 million mbpd production ceiling agreed last December. Investor hopes are running high that the latest weak US data could prompt a new round of fresh stimulus measures by the Federal Reserve to boost growth. US government data released Thursday showed new claims for unemployment benefits rose 6,000 to 386,000 last week, building on a worrying upward trend in the pace of layoffs. Data released earlier in the week showed US retail sales fell for a second consecutive month. AFP

PRANAB vs MAMATA
A tale of differences behind show of bonhomie KOLKATA:
Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have never quite gelled, despite their apparent show of bonhomie from time to time. The former has the image of a shrewd and seasoned administrator — comfortable both in diplomatic debates and calculative political dialogues to defuse crises. The other is instinctive and unpredictable, often seeming to lack in sophistication, and more adept in aggressive political fights and pressure games. The two are as different as chalk and cheese. So when Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, went all out to nix Mukherjee’s chances of making it to Raisina Hill, it did not come as a surprise to political leaders who have been witness to the ebb and tide of relations between the two. A front-ranking state Congress leader described as “rank jealousy” Banerjee’s animosity to Mukherjee becoming president. “She wants to carve out a niche for herself as a Bengali. She thinks she is the only sun in West Bengal, and does not want anyone to occupy any important slot from the state. She thinks she will be eclipsed. It is her mindset which is at play,” said Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury. Another state Congress leader Om Prakash Mishra pointed out that it was Pranab Mukherjee who ensured Banerjee got the Congress ticket to contest her maiden Lok Sacha election from the Jadavpur constituency in 1984. “At that time, she was a Subrata Mukherjee loyalist. And

ndia’s electoral college that will vote for a new president on July 19 is made up of 4,896 members — 776 members of the Parliament and 4,120 members of the State Assemblies. Between them they have 10,97,012 votes and the winning candidate needs at least 50 percent of these. How do numbers stack up? n The ruling United Progressive Alliance, in its present form, has 4,50,555 votes or 41.07 per cent of the total. Of this, the Congress alone has 3,31,855 votes, or 30.3 per cent of the total.
Trinamool Congress and the DMK have 11.04 per cent of the vote. n The Samajwadi Party, which supports the government from outside, has 6.34 per cent of the vote. n The Trinamool Congress has 4.40 per cent of the vote. n If the Trinamool and the Samajwadi Party vote with the government, this will give it 47.41 per cent of the ballots —a shortfall of a mere 2.59 per cent. n Should these two parties not vote with the government, it will be short by 13.33 per cent.

Pranabda was Subrata’s mentor.” “In later years also, he has been very accommodative of Banerjee. Both in 2001 and 2009, when Banerjee’s Trinamool
aligned with the Congress, it was Mukherjee who accommodated her hugely by giving a large chunk of seats,” he said. However, a Trinamool
has 27.7 per cent of the votes, of which the Bharatiya Janata Party has 21.2 per cent. n The Left has 4.7 per cent of the vote. n Among the other parties, the BSP has 3.98 per cent of the votes and the AIADMK 3.3 per cent. n In the “others” category are 10.1 per cent of the votes. To calculate the number of voters each legislator represents, the total population of the state is divided by the number of legislatures and then divided by 1,000. The value of vote of each MP is uniform at 708. Congress leader claimed that it was Mukherjee who has always been “extremely jealous” of Banerjee’s mass appeal. “Mukherjee maybe a statesman,
but he has never been a mass leader. In fact he won his first direct election from Jangipur Lok Sabha seat in Murshidabad district only eight years back, after having spent nearly four decades in politics. “He has never had any base of his own in the state, unlike Banerjee who has always had a huge mass following. Mukherjee has never taken this in the right spirit,” he said. The Trinamool leader claimed Mukherjee had indulged in “unsuccessful backbiting” and backroom manoeuvres in the 1990s to prevent Banerjee’s anointment as a central government minister during P.V. Narasimha Rao’s prime ministerial stint. “Again he never helped out Banerjee when she was constantly pushed to the wall in the Congress. At last, Banerjee had to form her own party,” he said. The Trinamool leader said Banerjee “strongly felt” that during her one year as state chief minister she never got any backing from Mukherjee, who was in charge of the union finance ministry. “She has inherited a debt-ridden state. Before the assembly election last year, even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised that the central government will go the extra mile if a Trinamool-Congress government was formed. “But after the election, no central help has been forthcoming. Mukherjee has constantly delayed any concrete action by having recourse to an endless sequence of meetings. And there is now very little money in the State coffers to carry out development,' he said. Bihar farmer bribes CM to save his life PATNA: Asked to pay a `1,000 bribe, a landless Bihar farmer begged to differ. And he vented his ire by collecting alms and sending the amount to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with the request it be paid to the corrupt police officer who asked for it. Instead of cursing the system and his fate, Saurabh Kumar alias Chabila Paswan, a poor Dalit farmer in Vaishali district, about 40 km from here, gathered his family and begged on the streets to collect the bribe money. The intrepid Paswan, his wife and children even slung placards around their necks to
tell people why they were collecting money. “I was angry and frustrated after I ran from pillar to post to lodge a police complaint. Then this innovative idea to fight against corruption came to my mind. I decided to beg to collect money to pay bribe,” Paswan told IANS, recounting how he was asked for a bribe from the Katahara police post in-charge when he went to lodge a complaint about threats to his life. “I was shocked when a police official demanded a bribe of `1,000 from me for lodging a complaint that I was being
threatened by some powerful people to be killed. When I told the police official that I’m not in a position to pay bribe, he made it clear that it was not possible for him to lodge his case.” Paswan added that he sent the money to the chief minister’s office with the request that it be paid to the police official if “the law permits” or be
deposited in the welfare fund. “I had purchased 10 postal orders of `100 denomination each and sent to the CM by post in a closed envelope. The envelope also has a petition detailing my plight,” Paswan told IANS over phone from his village Halaiya. He also told the CM that nothing moved without palms being greased.
Paswan is happy he got support from local people and also exposed rampant corruption with government officials demanding a bribe to get even the smallest job done. “It was a rare experience as most people supported my cause.” Senior police and administration officials refused to comment. However, Vaishali superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar Sinha said he had heard about the case. “Police will inquire into the allegations of bribe,” he said. IANS

After meeting Sangma, Tripathi said, “I went to him (Sangma) and told him that the party will support UPA candidate in the presidential race”. Meanwhile, Sangma said that he will contest the presidential elections and had got support from many political parties. “I will be contesting. As of now I am a candidate sponsored by two chief ministers and I am still in the race,” he told a news channel. Asked whether he would withdraw his candidature if NCP chief Sharad Pawar asked him to, Sangma said: “No…I have committed to people supporting me.” “Political parties supporting me will declare their support after UPA finalises its candidate,” he added. He added that the party will never support NDA’s president candidate.

With today’s result, UDF strength in the 140-member assembly goes up to 73 and reduced LDF’s to 67.

Getting down and dirty WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama’s campaign savagely mocked Mitt Romney as “out of touch” with ordinary Americans with a web video featuring a highlight reel of the Republican’s gaffes. The move came as Romney, a multi-millionaire former venture capitalist, argues that it is Obama that has lost touch with the economic pain stalking the US heartland, and as each candidate tries to outdo the other in professing deep empathy with the middle-class. “Mitt Romney is trying to call the president out of touch — but the reality is Romney can’t hide his out-of-touch policies behind hypocritical rhetoric,” the Obama campaign said in a news release. The video features a list of Romney’s missteps, including such comments as “corporations are people,” “I like being able to fire people,” and “I’m also unemployed.”
Want a beefy bacon sundae?
The video was released as a row rumbles over Obama’s comment last week that the private sector was doing “fine,” which Romney used to portray Obama as oblivious to the true state of the slowing US economic recovery. Romney and Obama are fighting for the votes of middle-class Americans in a clutch of swing states that could decide November’s election. Being seen as “in touch” with the plight of struggling voters is crucial for both campaigns. The latest Obama campaign web offensive came on the eve of a key speech by the president in the swing state of Ohio, laying out the economic choice for voters he sees represented in his struggle with Romney. The former Massachusetts governor on Wednesday issued a prebuttal of Obama’s remarks, saying that the president would acknowledge that the economy was not going
well, but would ask for four more White House years anyway. “My own view is that he will speak eloquently but that words are cheap and that the record of an individual is the basis upon which you determine whether they should continue to hold onto their job,” Romney said. “The reason it has taken so long for this recovery to gain traction and to put people back to work is in large measure because of the policy choices the president made,” Romney said. “He is not responsible for whatever improvement we might be seeing, instead he is responsible for the fact that it’s taken so long to see this recovery and the recovery is so tepid.” AFP

WASHINGTON: Burger King announced a special summer menu that includes a 510-calorie bacon sundae perfected in one of the most obesity-stricken states in America. “This limited-time soft serve dessert took Nashville, Tennessee by storm earlier this year and is now available nationwide to satisfy every sweet tooth,” the fast-food chain said in a press release. “The sweet and savory dessert features the rich and creamy vanilla BK soft serve (ice cream), drizzled with chocolate fudge, caramel and topped with bacon crumbles, complete with a thick-cut, hardwood smoked bacon garnish.” Its calorie count is within sight of Burger King’s signature Whopper hamburger, which weighs in at 670 calories. Tennessee has the fourthhighest obesity rate in the United States at 31.9 per cent, according to a report last year by the Trust for America’s Health think tank. The bacon sundae — which has eight grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar — is part of a one-off, barbecue-themed selection from Burger King that also includes such Southern favorites as pulled pork sandwiches, frozen lemonade and sweet potato fries. A worker shows hand bags composed of push-tabs from aluminum beverage cans, that sells 50 USD each.s MANILA: In the midst of the Philippines’ most notorious slum, British expat Jane Walker transforms lives by turning rubbish into top-end fashion items. A unique four-story building houses the Philippine Christian Foundation, an organisation Walker founded 16 years ago to help scavengers at the Smokey Mountain garbage dump in Manila’s chaotic bayside Tondo district. Walker teaches mothers to make colourful bags, purses and jewellery using items commonly discarded by the public - from toothpaste tubes, plastic bottles and lollypop wrappers to magazine pages and soft drink cans.
“It’s inspiring when you realise such a simple project helps so many families,” Walker, 48, told AFP during a recent visit to the school. “We design things from laptop bags and iPod cases, computer cases, all ranges of different handbags, shopping bags, clutch bags, fashion accessories and even place mats made from waste paper.” The products are sold in the country’s biggest department store chain, as well as to high-end and specialty shops in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, the Middle East and Singapore, with price tags ranging from 10 to 100 dollars.
A portion of the proceeds goes to the mothers and the staff, while the rest is used to finance the foundation’s operations. Apart from teaching livelihood skills, Walker’s foundation also runs a primary school where up to 500 slum children are enrolled at any given time free of charge. The building in itself is remarkable and true to the foundation’s recycling mantra. It is made from shipping containers welded and cemented together in what Walker says is the first such structure housing a school anywhere in the world. Walker first came to the Philippines in the mid-1990s on a soul searching holiday expecting to soak up some sun in a tropical paradise. Instead she found herself lost in a cab that drove her across Manila’s bayside Tondo district and its teeming slums. She was both amazed and repulsed by Smokey Mountain, a sprawling open dump known for its constantly billowing black smoke that once symbolised everything wrong in the Southeast Asian country known for corruption and crushing poverty. She returned to her native Southampton haunted by what she saw and was determined to do something about it. She subsequently quit her
high-paying job as a publishing executive and relocated to Manila. Using her own money and donations from friends, she took over an abandoned warehouse near the dumps and converted it into a school. Money, however soon dried up, forcing her to look for alternative sources of funding. “I thought, why not make garbage into something we can

profit from,” she said. “And that’s how it began.” Walker tirelessly scoured the dumps with the mothers, and encouraged their children to enrol in her school. As word of her work spread, corporate sponsors also lined up to donate cash that enabled her to expand her work, including construction of the new school in 2009 at a cost of one million dollars. AFP

Japan arrests final fugitive TOKYO: Police in Japan on Friday arrested the final fugitive from the religious cult that launched nerve gas attacks on Tokyo’s subway in 1995. The capture of Katsuya Takahashi brings an end to a police hunt for those behind the coordinated release of Nazideveloped sarin, an incident that killed 13 people, injured thousands and sowed panic throughout the capital. “Tokyo Metropolitan Police confirmed the identity of the man as Katsuya Takahashi by using finger prints and other information,” NHK reported. Takahashi, 54, was detained near a comic book cafe in southern Tokyo, it said. Jiji Press later confirmed Takahashi had been formally arrested on suspicion of murder and other charges. Argentina President Cristina Kirchner demanded on Thursday that Britain start talks with Argentina over the Falkland Islands in a UN speech on the 30th anniversary of the end of their war over the disputed territory. The two countries held rival commemorations to mark the end of Britain’s military operation to end a 74-day Argentine occupation of the remote South Atlantic islands. In London, Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to defend the Falklands against new “aggression” and said there could be no sovereignty negotiations. Kirchner went to the UN Decolonization Committee where she blasted Britain’s control of the Falklands as “an affront to the world which we all dream of” and accused Britain of abusing its position as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. But she said, “We do not want more deaths, we do not want more wars.” “We are not asking anyone to say yes, the Malvinas belong to Argentina. We are asking no more, no less than to sit down and talk,” she told the committee, a relatively low-level body overwhelmed
Stanford gets 110-year term HOUSTON: Financier and cricket mogul Allen Stanford was sentenced to 110 years in jail for a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, closing the book on the flamboyant ex-tycoon’s stunning fall from grace. “This is one of the most egregious frauds ever presented to a trial jury in federal court,” Judge David Hittner said in handing down the lengthy sentence on Thursday.
Stanford, 62, has spent the past three years in jail after being deemed a flight risk. He will likely never taste freedom again. The sentence will bring some satisfaction — but likely little financial relief — to some 30,000 investors from more than 100 countries who were bilked by bogus investments with Stanford International Bank. The team from Tottori University devised a mathematical model to measure how much money was spent on advertising, over what time period and how much talk it generated in social media. by the presence of the president and more than 90 of her ministers and officials. Kirchner sat stone-faced through speeches by two Falklands legislators who complained about Argentina’s “bullying” tactics. One of them, Mike Summers, said Argentina wanted to “air-brush us out of existence, to satisfy its unjustified lust for our land.” Summers tried to hand over a letter offering talks with the Falklands’ own government. But he could not get close to Kirchner at the end of the meeting and Argentina’s Foreign Minister Hector Timerman refused to accept the letter. Members of the
Falklands delegations followed Argentine officials through the UN trying to hand over the letter. Kirchner also held talks with UN leader Ban Ki-moon, who “reiterated that his good offices to resolve this dispute remain available if the parties are willing to engage,” said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky. Britain has insisted however that it will not discuss sovereignty as long as the 3,000 people on the windswept islands want to remain under the British flag. PARIS: Scientists have found evidence they say supports the theory that a knuckle bone and other human remains found under a church floor in Bulgaria may be of John the Baptist. The relics found in a small marble sarcophagus two years ago on a Bulgarian island called Sveti Ivan, also included a human tooth, part of a skull and
three animal bones. A research team from Oxford University dated the right-handed knuckle bone to the first century AD, when John is believed to have lived until his beheading by king Herod, the university said. Scientists from the University of Copenhagen analysed the DNA of the bones, finding they came from a single individual, probably a man, from a family in the modernday Middle East. While these findings do not definitively prove anything, they also don’t refute the theory first proffered by the Bulgarian archaeologists who found the remains while excavating under an ancient church on the island. Many sites around the world claim to hold relics of the saint. The findings are to be presented in a documentary to be aired on The National Geographic channel. AFP

Talk back Help stop meningitis
What a great article (Before you say au revoir, Jun 6). Meningitis does not stop at the dorm room door. Some colleges in the US require the meningitis shot. I am the mother of an only child, Ryan, who died from of meningococcal meningitis and the founder/national executive director of Meningitis Angels (www.meningitisangels.org). Each year in the US infants, children, teens and young adults are left seriously debilitated from meningococcal disease... some with the loss of limbs and some are left with severe organ damage, seizure disorder, brain damage, digestive disorders, anemia, blindness, deafness, and more. Worse, some die. Some early signs of the disease are unrelenting fever, leg pain, cold hands & feet & abnormal skin color. These can develop within (12 hours) after infection long before the more classic signs of the illness such as a rash, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light and impaired consciousness and death. The CDC recommends the meningococcal vaccine which protects against some of the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease such as meningitis or sepsis (bloodstream infections). This vaccine is recommended for all preteens. A booster shot is recommended for age 15/16 when disease risk is highest. Those students entering college who were vaccinated more than 3 years ago or have never received the meningitis shot are recommended to take it. Talk to your health care provider. everal months ago, I wrote a story on my company’s frustrating attempts to hire people, because prospective employees couldn’t answer basic questions, such as: n Does the earth go around the sun, or the sun around the earth? n Which ocean borders India? n Seven years ago, how old were you? n Who is Albert Einstein, and, (if they know the answer to that), what is he famous for? n Who is Sigmund Freud? n Name a country that is east of India. n Why is the sky blue? n Where is the North Pole? n Does the moon go around the earth, or the earth around the moon? n If I say, “The two siblings room was on the second floor,” where should the apostrophe go on the word ‘siblings’?” A few Indian friends of mine saw the article, and said essentially: “Indian parents don’t care. They know their kids will get jobs, whether or not they know if the sun goes around the earth or vice versa.” And my response to this is: Parents darn well should care, and here’s why. First, are parents right to assume their offspring are essentially guaranteed jobs because of India’s booming economy? Not quite. The reality is, the economy isn’t booming anymore. It was – growing between 8 and 10 per cent annually for years. But now it’s down to barely 5 per cent growth... a lot faster than, say, the United States, but not nearly fast enough to create jobs for every Indian hitting their adult and employable years. (As a side note, I believe a key reason for the slowdown in the India economy is the lack of qualified, trained employees... just talk to any employer, and they all say the same thing: “We can’t find good people to grow our company!”). Which means, quite simply, that the job market is going to get a lot more competitive, and fast. Who do you think employers will hire? The one who knows what ocean India borders? Or the one who doesn’t?

Second, even if the current generation of children in India can get jobs, what kind of jobs will they get? I find myself reluctantly hiring people who can’t answer any of the above questions quite frequently, because we need so badly people and can’t find anyone who can answer them. But they get low level jobs… jobs that pay 10,000 to 35,000 rupees a month, and they have little chance of increasing these amounts above the rate of inflation throughout their careers. And if you’re thinking... “Why not just train them once you hire them, Mr Anonymous Alien, so they do know the answers to the above questions?” Well, that brings me to my third point. The problem with employees who don’t know the answers to the above questions isn’t that I need people to know who Albert Einstein for them to be able to do their jobs. The reality is, knowing who Albert Einstein is probably wouldn’t matter at almost any job in the world. What does matter is that employees who make a difference in companies – the ones who create wealth for a company and thus earn lakhs and lakhs and who can increase their incomes dramatically throughout their careers – are the ones with the ability to think... to behave proactively, to be cre-
ative, to solve problems. And in my many years in India, I have come to believe that those who don’t know if the earth goes around the sun, or vice versa, don’t know it because they were only taught to memorise that fact – in this case, that the earth goes around the sun. That’s a fact that some 20-30 years after committing it to memory is easily forgotten. Those who don’t forget it are the ones who understand WHY the earth goes around the sun. They were taught not to memorize this fact, but to understand this phenomenon: why it happens, what its social and cultural relevance was and is, and why it matters in scientific and astronomical terms. They were, in short, taught to think, not to memorise, and that makes them infinitely more valuable to employers. So parents, think about this: if your kid is eight or older, and can’t answer, say, 5 or more of the above questions, it’s time to take action now because there is still time to rescue your child, to train their brains to think. And think about this too: once they get to me, an employer, I can tell you from experience – it’s far too late to take action. JAGAN’S TRIUMPH SPELLS DOOM FOR KIRAN, Congress prospects in AP
he one question on everyone’s mind was if the Congress government would survive in the State following the bypolls. But with the YSRC leading in most constituencies, Congress’ return to power in the 2014 general elections now seems like a distant dream. Whether it was the YSR scion’s relentless campaigning or his arrest and the subsequent sympathy wave as his sister Sharmila set the ball rolling with her appeal to bring back the ‘Rajanna rajyam’, we’ll never know. But whatever it was it worked in favour of the YSRC and Jagan Mohan Reddy. Even the BJP’s promise to form a separate Telangana state, didn’t work this time around. So while Jagan seems all set to take on the State, it remains to be seen if dynastic politics will triumph, yet again. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy is a sad man. The last-minute show of unity and tacit understanding with anti-Jagan parties failed to yield results. For the embattled CM, the bypolls was his chance to prove to the party bosses in Delhi that he is in control and can do the job. The YSR scion has proved he is a force to reckon with and is here to stay.
WITH RUSSIA, US must tread lightly
H
illary Clinton’s incorrect statement that Russia was covertly supplying attack helicopters to Syria could not have come at a worse time for the Syrian people. Given that Russia will be a key component to peace in the beleaguered country, irking them isn’t wise. The US must tread carefully.

Leaders of the pack Robert Plant Ozzy Osbourne

hether he’s biting the head off a bat or chasing his inner demons, Ozzy Osbourne had more stage presence than Satan. ew youngsters will remember all the members of Guns ‘n’ Roses, the seminal hard rock outfit that changed the whole trajectory of the genre. But Axl Rose, like his bandmate, lead guitarist Slash is etched into the annals of rock history. Axl’s presence on stage was a live wire verging on dangerous. G ‘n R may have mellowed later into its career but on albums like Appetite for Destruction and Lies, Axl Rose soars.
lad in a flannel shirt and blue jeans, Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen epitomised the everyman whenever he strode out on to the stage, electric guitar in tow. Backed up by the excellent E-Street band and Clarence Clemmons, Bruce’s rasp captivated arenas. Equally at ease belting out Born to Run, and quietly layering the texture on The River, Springsteen is a frontman who has spanned generations. The classic clip of him asking a young and anonymous Courteney Cox to shake a leg on stage to Dancing in the Dark is priceless and personifies the Springsteen spirit.

o call Mick Jagger the aged gentleman of rock lead singers would be to do him a great injustice. Even at 69, Jagger has lost none of the potency that makes him one of the most popular singers of all time, pipped to the top spot only by Elvis Presley. As part of the legendary Rolling Stones Jagger has been part of arguably the best band ever, across any genre and has used his tremendously talented band mates to provide a cushion of harmony upon which the frolicking genius of jagger can cavort. And boy does he cavort. One look at the footage of Jumpin’ Jack Flash or the high camp of Angie and it’s evident, there can only be one Mick Jagger.

But they didn’t care because Jim Morrison had that charisma that could only come from supreme confidence. Leading the Doors through an era fraught with self-destruction, Jim became not only an icon, but an incredibly influential singer. His lyrics were matched only by his ability to croon the audience into a state of ultimate bliss. Many have attempted to copy his stage style, almost all have failed.

Extended breast feeding anyone? With the global debate raging on when a mum should stop breast feeding her child, we check with young mothers in the City on what they think Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

otherhood they say is the best experience a woman could have. Following close on its heels is the joy of breast feeding her baby. Experts have suggested that this is one of the best ways for a mother to forge a strong bond with her child. Mothers too claim that the practice of breast feeding is extremely satisfying. In fact, there are cases across the globe where women are reluctant to wean their children and continue to breast feed them even when the child is three or four years old. But how much is too much, when it comes to breast feeding? “I breast fed my first son till the age of one, after which I gradually weaned him. With my second one however, I find that after six months itself he has begun to wean himself. So it really depends on the child. However, breast feeding a child till the age of four is stretching it a bit too much,” says Anju N, a research scientist. For Akanksha Reddy,
though, her baby himself wasn’t too keen on being breast fed. “He didn’t really like being breast fed. And since I didn’t get too much time off from work after my delivery, it wasn’t convenient for me to breast feed him either. So we both settled for expressed breast milk instead and then eventually for formula milk. Fortunately, he is

very healthy and has no problems whatsoever,” she says. Doctors advocate breast feeding and say that a woman should ideally breast feed her child till the age of one or 18 months. “For the first six months, a baby should be exclusively breast fed. There is no substitute for mother’s milk. It is extremely nutritious and pro-
vides the infant with all his/her nutritional requirements. After six months, the baby can be put on home-cooked semi-solids like raagi or khichdi, but the breast feeding should continue till the age of one. While for the first six months the mother’s milk meets all the nutritional requirements, after that it provides the child with the antibodies to fight infections,” says Dr Kiran Krishnamurti, a paediatrician. However, for Rubina Singh, mother of one, stretching the breast feed till her child turn almost two wasn’t a problem. “Why not? Experts say that it is perfectly alright for a mother to continue to breast feed her child till both the mother and child want to stop doing so. In my case, both my daughter and I didn’t want to really stop. Although I did put her on semi-solid foods and eventually solids, she still wanted breast milk a couple of times of day. I didn’t mind either as mother’s milk is supposed to be very nutritious,” she says.
Breast milk is the best Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
W
hile most women would prefer breast feeding their newborn, there may be some who don’t want to or some others who cannot for various reasons. For those few, there are options available, however experts opine that breast feeding is the best one. “There’s no reason why a mother shouldn’t breast feed her child. But if for some reason that isn’t happening then, expressing breast milk and then giving it to the child with a spoon is an option,” says Dr Kiran Krishnamurti, a paediatrician practicing at the Andromeda Centre. In the rare case, that a woman can’t express breast milk either, then doctors suggest other alternatives. “Any animal milk that has been pasteurised is a distant second option. There are
also formulae milk available in the market that a mother could opt for. While there are several babies who survive on animal milk and formula milk, the mother’s milk is the best option for babies,” explain Dr Kiran. Experts suggest that a baby be put to the mother’s breast soon after birth. The first 30 to 40 minutes after birth are when the baby is at its most alert. This enhances the mother-child bond that develops. Also the first milk produced by the mother, called colostrum, is very high in proteins and antibodies, which are vital in helping the baby cope with the stress of birthing. Also according to studies, breast feeding helps the mother shed all the kilos she piled on during pregnancy. Research also shows that suggested that non breast feeding mothers face a greater risk of osteoporosis later in life and also the chances of hip fractures goes up for them.

Medical imaging on the rise increasing radiation exposure
A not-so welcome break
A new study by the American Medical Association shows the use of computed tomography (CT) scans has tripled between 1996 and 2010 Alexander Besant
A
new study by the American Medical Association shows the use of computed tomography (CT) scans has tripled between 1996 and 2010. WebMd reported that CT scan rates rose from 52 per 1000 patients to 149 per 1000 patients in that time period. According to Bloomberg, the number of people receiving high doses of radiation from the scans has doubled during the last 15 years. This means that more and
more patients receive greater than 20 millisieverts to 50 millisieverts of radiation - and sometimes higher - per year, while the general population is only exposed to about 6.2 millisieverts per year. It is well-known that high exposure to radiation causes cancer. The study was conducted by looking at millions of medical records of patients enrolled in six large HMOs around the country. Researchers found that the increase in scans seemed to have little to do with incentives
for doctors who might be paid for every test. Looking at patients enrolled in HMOs, rather than programs such as Medicaid, meant that the financial incentive would be an unlikely reason for the increase as doctors were not paid per test, said WebMd. “One of the thoughts for the change in the rise of imaging is a change in the incentives,” Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a professor of radiology and biomedical imaging at UCSF and study co-author, told Fox News. “So we wanted to study patients see if there was an
increase when there weren’t an incentives, and the rate of growth is very similar in all the other settings. It suggests that financial factors may play a role, but there are other factors as well.” The study said that increasing scans were likely due to new technology making them more applicable in a wider range of illnesses, reported the New York Times. It also said that patients were requesting them more often. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Common cold virus kills cancer cells, study finds
R
esearchers at the University of Leeds found that they were able to deliver the “reovirus” into the bloodstream and, using blood cells, it can make its way to tumors without being killed first by antibodies. Before the technique, most scientists thought that the common cold would immediately be neutralized by natural antibodies.
“It seems that reovirus is even cleverer than we had thought,” study author Alan Melcher, professor at Leeds University in the UK said in a statement, according to ABC News. “By piggybacking on blood cells, the virus is managing to hide from the body’s natural immune response and reach its target intact. This could be hugely significant for the uptake
of viral therapies like this in clinical practice.”The study was conducted on 10 patients with advanced bowel cancer. Reuters reported that the cold virus both killed cancer cells and created an immune response that eliminated the remaining cancerous cells. The study authors also found that the virus did not attack healthy cells, only cancerous ones.Researchers said
that the new discovery could change how a range of cancers are treated. By injecting the virus directly into the bloodstream, the possibilities for outpatient treatment could eventually see virus-therapy.”This study gives us the news that it should be possible to deliver these treatments with a simple injection,” said study co-author Kevin. Gym Diaries Sudeshna Koka
P
rocrastination is indeed the destruction of mankind. After three weeks of procrastination I finally decided to get back to the gym. After two weeks of putting off going to the gym with some excuse or the other, my decision to head back was met with surprise. Everyone, from the janitor to my trainer were surprised to see me back. While my trainer greeted me with a bemused smile, I’m sure at the back of his mind he was laughing at me. But as proud as I was of myself for going back to the gym, the after-effects were terrible. For starters, I had no stamina to exercise. After 18 days of lethargy my body refused to do any sort of physical activity. Usually, I can spin on the cycle continuously for a minimum of eight minutes but this time even five minutes was a Herculean task. After huffing and puffing my way through the 10 minutes of spinning, I realised that such a long break from the gym was a bad idea. Seems like instructor had no plans of letting me have it easy either for bunking gym for so long. The workout was rigorous and how! He made me do painful squats and the excruciating abs, apart from some spot sprints and jumps. Just two days earlier I was devouring that Qubani ka meetha with great relish, but now I could feel all of that fat and it wasn’t fun. Usually, my work out sessions are a combination of cardio and weight training for one part of the body. But this time, I had to exercise every part of the body, except hands and shoulders and trust me, the pain I felt during the work out was bad. But what I felt the next morning was worse. Initially I thought abs was the worst exercise. But when my legs turned to jelly after an evening of squatting, jumping and running, I realised exactly how hard it was. Now as I battle the screaming muscles, I realise that come what may, such a long break from the gym is definitely not a good idea. The pain and extra flab are too much to handle. LITTLE Chanel celebrates its iconic black jacket this year in the form of a book The Little Black Jacket with photographs by designer Karl Lagerfeld and stylist Carine Roitfeld celebrating the versatile nature of this classic piece of garment Surabhi Chauhan feedback@postnoon.com

veryone has a list of wardrobe basics that live through seasons and fashion trends. A little black dress or LBD is a popular choice for women, as are a pair of blue jeans. This year, French luxury house Chanel reminds us to add another must have garment to our list of classics – the Chanel black jacket. The Chanel Black Jacket is the cause of celebration this year with the brand launching an eponymous book and a travelling exhibition. The history of the jacket began in 1916 when it was designed, produced and even worn by its founder Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was born in the nineteenth century and was an important figure of the twentieth century. Defying the trends of her time, Chanel was the first one to design luxury womenswear without the tight cinched waists (made popular by Dior’s New Look). She defied prevailing trends and created garments with shorter hemlines where women could wear haute couture and still go about their work with ease. She wore menswear inspired shirts and trousers herself and created items which were simple and timeless. “I always make the first design for me” said the petite Coco who believed that women could be elegant while wearing clothes that didn’t trap the body into an unnatural form. A savvy business woman and creator, Coco Chanel is still remembered for the iconic products like the Chanel No.5 perfume, tweed suit, pearl costume jewellery, quilted handbag, to name a few. The black jacket, also part of the tweed suit, was at the time of its creation a revelation in womenswear. Coco Chanel’s original black tweed jacket had some very defined details: overcast and topstitched seams for an even surface, a gilt chain weighing down the inside hem of the jacket so as

to take the shape of the body of the wearer instead of the other way around. The stitching and quality of the fabric made this a unique buy. When designer Karl Lagerfeld joined Chanel as the Artistic Director in 1983, he stepped into the shoes of Coco Chanel with ease by following a similar working style of creating for tomorrow while deriving from the past. His style paid tribute to the founder but never copied or imitated Coco Chanel’s designs. Karl’s first collection for Chanel was for the same muse Gabrielle Chanel designed for, and even included the black tweed jacket with chain details. This year, Lagerfeld collaborated with former French Vogue editor and stylist extraordinaire Carine Roitfeld for the book The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s classic revisited. The book has been launched for Fall 2012 with images of 109 celebrities wearing the jacket in a unique and different style each time. Models, actors, singers, rappers, fashion editors, designers all can be seen in this book wearing the Chanel black jacket. Photographed in black and white portrait format by Karl Lagerfeld himself (who also photographs the ad campaigns for Chanel) and styled by Carine Roitfeld (who is also the cover star of the book wearing the Chanel black jacket with matching skirt), this book celebrates the versatility of a classic garment which was originally designed for women, is now worn by men as well. “The Chanel jacket is a man’s jacket which has become a typically feminine piece. It has crossed that boundary. I love that. It has become the symbol of a certain feminine elegance, nonchalant and timeless, which means for all time, ” says Karl Lagerfeld in the behind the scenes film shot during the photo shoot. Correctly so, the jacket looks incredibly stylish on the master-of-cool New York- based designer Alexander Wang and manages to look sporty yet dressed up on Brooklyn- based male rapper Theophilus London when he wears the jacket with white Tshirt and sneakers. Model Frankie Rayder wears the jacket over a grey hoodie and floral print skirt. Actress Sarah Jessica Parker was styled with the jacket worn as a headpiece and worn over skirt in a crop- fitted version. French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis wore the black jacket over a white bohemian inspired long dress. While Coco Chanel must have designed the jacket keeping in mind the simple nature it could be worn, Karl Lagerfeld took that simple concept and adapted to different ways— how today’s customer would want to wear their Chanel jacket time and again. The ‘Little Black Jacket’ project is a clear indication how a heritage brand like Chanel remains fresh and relevant while remaining true to its founder’s vision. The book was launched in form of a travelling exhibition in Tokyo during March end 2012 and in New York earlier this month. The exhibition will also travel to Taipei this month and more cities, which are yet to be announced. To see behind the scenes videos of the project, log on to http://thelittleblackjacket.chanel.com

was not far behind. His songs including Bin Tere Sanam, became an instant favourite with the audience and dominated dance floors across not just India but internationally as well. With so many new and upcoming DJs or musicians fighting to gain a spot in the industry, does he feel the heat
from all the competition? “I have never really looked at my passion for music in that light. For me it was only about making good music and keeping audiences entertained,” he says going on to add that he loves playing in Hyderabad. “In my opinion, the whole of South India is the birthplace for House music. There
was a time when Mumbai clubs played only retro music and I had to mix accordingly. So if I played two English songs in the beginning, I would have to play three Hindi songs just so that the crowd isn’t too unfamiliar. But, now the audience is much smarter, and well educated about what songs are trending,” he explains. He is now coming up with a solo remix album by midAugust and he is also working on the music of Raaz 2.

iaa Bajpai is finally making her comeback in Telugu in Jeevan Reddy’s upcoming action film Dhalam. She had made her debut in Siva Nageswara Rao’s Ninnu Kalisaka in 2009; however, she shot to fame with KV Anand’s Rangam, which was one of the biggest hits of 2011. “My character Saro in Rangam clicked so well that I whoever approached me after that wanted to cast me in similar roles. I wasn’t too keen in doing characters once again,” Piaa says. So how did she end up bagging the lead role in Dhalam? “I was quite excited with the way he etched my character. I play a Tamil-Brahmin girl in the film and this is the first time I am playing a non-urban role,” she reveals. Naveen, Kishore, Krishnan and Krishnudu are playing the lead roles in this film which revolves around the lives of gangsters. “I am the only heroine in the film and I must say, I am enjoying all the attention on the set,” Piaa quips.

rahmanandam’s upcoming film Jaffa is making waves on the Internet. Less than two days after the film’s trailer was posted online, it has already been viewed more than three lakh times on various websites and YouTube. Of late, it has become a trend in Tollywood to evaluate the buzz generated by a film based on the number of hits the trailers get on YouTube and Jaffa seems to have clicked quite well with the audience. Vennela Kishore, who’s directing the film, is quite elated with the initial response. Shamdat is the cinematographer, Sunil Kashyap has composed the background score and Praveen is the editor. The film will hit the screens later this year.

KAKURO
How to play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Edoardo Mangiarotti (born April 7, 1919) The most decorated fencer in the history of the sport, Edoardo Mangiarotti won a record 13 medals in a 24-year Games career. Mangiarotti was a master in both the Epée and Foil, competing at the highest level between the ages of 17 and 41. At Berlin 1936 he became the youngest gold medal winner in any sport as part of the Italian Epée team.
Ilona Elek (born May 17, 1907) competed in her first Olympic Games in 1936 and took home a gold medal in the Foil event. In 1948, Elek became one of only two champions from Berlin 1936 to successfully defend her title. Ilona competed in her final Games at Helsinki 1952. Wheelchair fencing Wheelchair fencing happens to be an original Paralympic sport. It was developed during the post-World War II era in England. Minor modifications to the Fédération Internationale d’Escrime (FIE) rules allow disabled fencers to fence all three weapons. The most apparent change in this form of fencing is that each fencer sits in a wheelchair fastened to a frame. Footwork is replaced by torso or arm movement, depending on the fencer’s disability. The proximity of the two fencers tends to increase the pace of bouts. The fencers use standard Olympic weapons and not any special weapons.
At the first modern Olympic Games of 1896, the Fencing programme consisted of men’s Foil and Sabre events, while the third discipline Epée made its debut at Paris 1900. Women’s Foil first featured at the Paris 1924 Games, with Epée and Sabre added in 1996 and 2004 respectively.
The basics Three types of weapon are used in Olympic Fencing. In bouts using the Foil and the slightly heavier Epée, hits are scored by hitting an opponent with the tip of the weapon. In Sabre, hits are more commonly scored with the edge of the weapon.
Competition format All 10 medal events on the Fencing programme are run in a knockout format. In Individual competition, men’s and women’s Foil, men’s sabre and women’s Epée start with a round of 64, although the fact that there are only 39–39 athletes in each event means that some athletes will receive byes into the round of 32. Men’s Epée and women’s Sabre begin with a round of 32, with a maximum of two athletes receiving byes into the round of 16. The draw is based on the existing FIE rankings.
THE LINGO Lunge: a fast, forward movement when attacking, with the back foot static but the front foot and body moving dynamically towards the opponent. Parry: a defensive move, used to block your opponent’s blade Riposte: scoring a hit after you’ve successfully executed a parry. Piste: the field of play.
Officials A referee oversees each Fencing bout. The referee is assisted by a video referee and, in the later stages of the competition, two assistant referees, who look for rule infringements.
Keys to success Fencing is a fast and a tense sport. Fencers must use all their wits and quick thinking to outmanoeuvre their opponent, judging the time and effective way to attack. The Venue: ExCel
qeb=afp`fmifkbp ÉPÉE is the only fencing discipline in which the entire body is the valid target area. Épée is the heaviest of the three modern fencing weapons. Fencing matches with the épée requires a large amount of concentration, accuracy and speed. Since the entire body is a target, a successful épée fencer must be able anticipate their opponent’s move and strike their opponent at the correct time.
FOIL is used as a thrusting weapon only. Any contact with the side of the blade (a slap or slash) does not result in a score. To score a touch, one must touch an opponent with the tip of the foil with a force of over 4.90 newtons. As such, points are not necessarily awarded to the first fencer to hit, but to the fencer who hits with priority. Priority is established when one fencer starts a correctly executed attack.
SABRE or SABER is usually has a curved, single-edged blade and a rather large hand guard, covering the knuckles as well as the thumb and forefinger. Sabre is a right-ofway weapon, which means that the fencer must take certain actions to get the right to score a point. Because sabre is a fast weapon, the window of time each fencer is allowed to get their light on during electric fencing is very, very small.

UNEASY WITH BAN REVISION LONDON: As David Millar was confirmed on the longlist for the Olympic road race, Sir Chris Hoy emphasised his opposition to the reversion of the British Olympic Association’s ban on athletes who have tested positive for drugs reported The Guardi-an. Millar was banned between 2004 and 2006 for using the blood booster erythropoietin but became eligible for the London Games after the court of arbitration for sport overturned the BOA’s bylaw. Millar is one of seven riders who were named as possibles to support Mark Cavendish in the Olympic road race on 28 July, with the actual selection of five to be named on 29 June. Hoy said that while he will welcome his fellow Scot as a fellow team member if he is in the quintet, he wishes that the BOA’s ruling was still in place. “It’s not about individuals or one-off athletes. I’m comfortable with whoever is selected because they are eligible for the team.” “It’s about having a meaningful deterrent against people thinking of taking drugs, not about an individual who may be part of this team. My standpoint is that someone could have Rio [2014] as a target and could think that it’s worth the risk of taking drugs because they could test positive, come back and compete again. There should be meaningful deterrents that
put people off taking drugs. It’s a shame that the bylaw has gone, but it’s gone. I’ll welcome whoever is standing next to me in Great Britain kit.” The Great Britain performance director Dave Brailsford said that Millar’s place on the longlist came down solely to who was eligible for the team. “Ultimately it’s the BOA’s team. They decide who is eligible, I line them up against that wall over there and select who is the fastest. It’s my job to select the fastest team.” Millar’s selection was no surprise given that he has represented Great Britain at several world road race championships and was a key choice in the team that backed Cavendish en route to win-
It’s not about individuals or one-off athletes. I’m comfortable with whoever is selected because they are eligible for the team Sir Chris Hoy, Scottish track cyclist ning the world title in 2011. Brailsford said after announcing the team that Millar’s place in the final five is by no means assured. He added that he and his fellow selectors had taken into
account any possible negative impact on the team due to the attention and press coverage that his selection might attract. “It’s a story, an issue, a change from what has happened in the past, but the British Olympic Association has changed its policy and professionally I have to choose the fastest guys. It’s not for me to say I’ll over-ride their thinking from a personal perspective. “What I do do in terms of selecting the team... will anything surrounding an individual have a negative impact on the group dynamic or even on themselves. It could be such an emotional environment, such a challenging thing for David to go through, that he might not cope with the whole thing.”
Mutombo backs Olympic age limit TOKYO: Retired NBA star Dikembe Mutombo has backed the idea of limiting the Olympic basketball competition to players under 23 after the London Games to give a chance to young talent. The NBA proposed last month to withdraw its top players from the Olympics after 2012 and instead implement the age limit over fears from players and teams about potential burn-out from too many games. Leading an NBA youth training camp in
Tokyo, the 45-year-old Mutombo said European national teams “have the tendency to keep their squads for almost 16 years or sometimes much longer”. “Young players in Europe have been held back” as the teams counted on the “names of those who had success”, he told reporters Wednesday. “It’s no good for our sport,” the eight-time NBA All-Star said. “You watch the NBA All-Stars game every year. We don’t have the same players every year.” AFP
Gay, Gatlin and Lemaitre set for Diamond League PARIS: Among those aiming to exploit the absence of Usain Bolt at the Diamond League meeting which will be held here on July 6 are American sprint stars Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin along with home favourite Christophe Lemaitre. Bolt skips this 100m staged three weeks before the Olympic Games as he is retained in Kingston by the Jamaican selection trials for the upcoming Olympics which will be held in London during the months of July and August. Gay has posted the second fastest time in history, 9.69s run in Shanghai in 2009, Gatlin is the fourth fastest 100m sprinter this season while Lemaitre is the reigning European champion. Gay missed the 2011 world championships with injury and this is only his second competitive race this season after a run out in New York on Saturday at the Diamond League Meeting on America’s East Coast. The 2007 world champion dominated his series in a time of 10.00 despite a headwind of 1.5m/sec.

Canada wants minute for Munich dead MONTREAL: Canadian lawmakers on Thursday unanimously passed a motion calling for a minute of silence at the London Olympic Games to honor the Israeli athletes killed at the Munich Games in 1972. The International Olympic Committee last month scotched any possibility of a tribute to the athletes killed by Palestinian militants, but Canadian MPs said the 40th anniversary of the tragedy should be recognized.

UEFA fines Germany for fans, Portugal for delay
Lyon’s French striker Bafetimbi Gomis and Cesena player Yohan Benalouane remained in custody on Thursday while prosecutors debated whether or not to proceed with the rape allegations. “The custody has been extended ahead of a presentation before the prosecutor on Friday who will decide if there are grounds to open a judicial investigation,” said a spokesman.
UEFA on Thursday said that it had fined Germany 10,000 euros after its fans threw missiles onto the pitch during the country’s opening match with Portugal while Portugal were fined 5,000 euros for a delayed kick-off to the second-half of the Group B match in Lviv, Ukraine, last Saturday, European football’s governing body said in an emailed statement.
Hodgson calls for ruthless England Rob Woollard
KIEV: Roy Hodgson urged England here on Thursday to show a ruthless attacking streak as they prepared for their Group D meeting with perennial bogey team Sweden. England have never beaten Sweden in a competitive fixture but head into Friday’s Euro 2012 game at the Olympic Stadium as favourites to take all three points following a 1-1 draw with France. But while England’s defensive display against the French on Monday earned plaudits, Hodgson admitted his side will have to present more of an attacking dimension if they want to defeat the Swedes. England’s solitary goal against France came from a set-piece, and clear-cut goal-scoring chances from open play were few — something Hodgson feels England must improve on Friday. “I was happy with the start. We played quite well, certain aspects of our game were good,”
Sweden vs England 9.30 pm (Friday) Neo Prime Hodgson told a press conference. “We must maintain that and, if we are going to win matches, we’ve got to continue to work
hard on the attacking side of the game. We have to try to make certain when we do get these good counter-attacking opportunities that we maximise them and take advantage to the full. When we win the ball back and break out, we’ve got to make certain the last pass, cross or actual finish is very clinical. It is hard to get good goal chances at this level of football.
You are not going to get many during the course of a game and you have to be very effective when the chances come your way. “I am not talking about the clear-cut one versus ones with the goalkeeper but the situation where you’ve got behind the defence and it’s a question of making certain the last pass gives someone the chance to score a goal. “That is something we’ve been working on consistently.” Despite his acknowledgement of England’s problems in the final third against France, Hodgson bristled when asked if he felt England were technically inferior to other sides. “No, I don’t (think that),” he replied bluntly. “You work with teams to try and get yourself into a position to deliver the right ball and it all depends on how good that delivery or final pass is. But I would definitely question any suggestion that we are lacking in any way and our players are not technically good enough.”
England wary of Ibrahimovic threat KIEV: England captain Steven Gerrard urged his team to beware the threat posed by Sweden counterpart Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Thursday as the two sides prepared for a crucial Group D clash. Gerrard said AC Milan striker Ibrahimovic was a “world class talent” who demanded special attention before adding that Sweden possessed attacking threats throughout their side. “On his day he’s very dangerous. We need the same level of commitment defensively to try and stop Ibrahimovic,” Gerrard said. “If you give him time and space he can hurt any team so we’re well aware of him. We’ve watched videos of him and we’re going to watch some more. “But there’s a lot more threats from Sweden than Ibrahimovic.” AFP
Blanc warns France not to get caught cold again Tom Williams
DONETSK,
UKRAINE:
Laurent Blanc has urged France to avoid the mistakes they made against England by starting strongly against co-hosts Ukraine in their second Euro 2012 outing in Donetsk on Friday. France were second-best for the first quarter of their
opening match and fell behind to a Joleon Lescott header before earning a draw through Samir Nasri’s equaliser nine minutes later. Les Bleus finished the game at Donbass Arena in the ascendancy but were unable to breach the English defence a second time and Blanc does not want them to handicap themselves with
France vs Ukraine 12.15am (Saturday) Neo Prime another slow start on Friday. “We’ve re-watched the England game a few times,” he said. “We could have been 2-0 down after 25 minutes and it would’ve been
very difficult to come back. But the goal woke us up and tomorrow (Friday) I hope we’ll be awake from the first second of the match.” Contrary to the England game, Blanc has a fully fit squad to select from and must make a decision whether or not to include Yann M’Vila from the start after he overcame an ankle injury.

Rampant Spanish Armada sinks Ireland GDANSK, POLAND: Fernando Torres (in pic) put to bed any debate about his form on Thursday as ‘El Nino’ scored a double to inspire defending champions Spain to a 4-0 drubbing of a gutsy but outclassed Ireland. His double and goals by David Silva and Cesc Fabregas sent the Spanish top of Group C on goal difference from Croatia
Irish mentally disintegrated
I
reland coach Giovanni Trapattoni has admitted his team have suffered “a psychological blow” in the wake of their 4-0 defeat to Spain, but insisted they will finish Euro 2012 with heads held high. “The mistakes we made here means we have suffered a bit of a psychological blow,” said the 73-year-old Italian as Ireland suffered their worst competitive defeat in 41 years.
while defeat ended Irish hopes of progressing to the last eight. Croatia — 3-1 victors over Ireland in their opening game — came from 1-0 down to draw 1-1 with Italy thanks to Mario Mandzukic’s third goal of the tournament. They will meet Spain in the last group game while Italy take on former boss Giovanni
Trapattoni’s Ireland — Italy could still win and not go through if all three sides end up on five points.
Ironically, Italy exited the 2004 edition at the group stage despite not losing a game — their coach then was none other
than Trapattoni. Torres, whose place in the squad had been a matter for some debate because of his woeful form with Chelsea, set the tone for their game with a superbly taken opener in the fourth minute and from then on there was only one team in it. Torres, who came off with the game won, said that this performance showed Spain in its true light, not the one that looked rather listless in the 1-1 draw with Italy. “We really were champing at the bit ahead of this game to shake off the draw against Italy and we saw the old Spain of 2008 (when his goal won them the title), and 2010 (the World Cup win),” said Torres. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque, who came in for some criticism for not starting with a recognised striker in the Italy game, said that his system worked. “Torres knows how to find the spaces, it was the perfect match, a lot of people think he could have played in the first match, but that wasn’t the point,” said Del Bosque. “We have a system and we showed it works. “People think it is important to have a striker and it is important for us as well, but it is more important to win.” Trapattoni was left bemused by the manner in which his players appeared to have frozen on the grand stage. AFP
‘We lack condition not character’ POZNAN, POLAND: Italy coach Cesare Prandelli denied his side lack character after they failed to hold onto a lead for the second game in a row at Euro 2012. The Azzurri have now drawn both their opening two games 11 against, first Spain last Sunday and then Croatia on Thursday.
Having held the lead for just three minutes against the world champions, they conceded an equaliser 18 minutes from time against Croatia, leaving them third in Group C. Italy trail both Spain and Croatia by two points and must beat Ireland in their final group game to have any chance of
reaching the quarter-finals. In both games Italy have been holding on at the end and Prandelli says the problem is they do not have the physical condition to maintain their intensity for an entire match. “I don’t think we lack character. After 70 minutes our physical condition drops,” he said. AFP
Croatia scoff at match-fixing Croatian defender Vedran Corluka dismissed the possiblity that his side and Spain will play for a 2-2 draw on Monday to guarantee their passage to the Euro 2012 quarter-finals. Following their 1-1 draw with Italy and Spain’s 4-0 trouncing of Ireland, the pair are joint top of Euro 2012 Group C with four points. Italy are two points behind but if they win their final match against Ireland and the other game ends in a draw, three teams will finish on five points.

Woods puts best foot forward
Rebecca Bryan
SAN
FRANCISCO: Tiger Woods showed the poise that has made him a 14-time major champion on Thursday, adapting to a treacherous Olympic Club course
to get his US Open challenge off to a solid start. “I was really, really surprised at how much it had changed from last night or from yesterday,” Woods said after shooting a oneunder par 69.
“We knew the greens were going to be a little quicker, but I didn’t think they would be this firm this early in the week. So we had to make a couple of adjustments with that. “But I’m really excited how I was able to execute my game plan all day today and pleased with a one-under par round.” Woods was three shots off the pace set by first-round leader Michael Thompson (66). He was joined on 69 by 2001 USPGA Champion David Toms, 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell, England’s Justin Rose and American Nick Watney. Woods, whose pursuit of Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 major titles has been slowed by scandal, injury and swing changes, raised expectations that he would lift his first major trophy since 2008 with his victory at The Memorial a fortnight ago. Playing partner Bubba Watson, the reigning Masters champion who staggered to a 78 on Thursday, said Woods showed every sign of being back in major title form. “Tiger, that was the old Tiger,” Watson said. “That was beautiful to watch. He hit every shot shape he was trying to hit. I didn’t see any bad swings. I didn’t see any bad shot really.” Woods, who acknowledged at The Masters that he wasn’t dialed in with his re-tooled swing, was also “very pleased” with his ball striking.
Tsonga out of Queen’s, may miss big one Steve Griffiths
Jo-Wilfried LONDON: Tsonga suffered a miserable third round exit from Queen’s Club on Thursday as the world number five was beaten 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 76 (7/5) by Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and suffered a serious finger injury in the process. With top seed Andy Murray, fourth seed Gilles Simon and four-time Queen’s champions Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt already eliminated from the grass-court event, it seems Tsonga had a golden opportunity to go all the way. But the Frenchman, seeded second, produced a lethargic display and world
number 69 Dodig took full advantage to claim one of the best wins of his career. Tsonga reached the final here last year, losing to Murray, and became the first player ever to beat Roger Federer from two sets down at a grand slam in the Wimbledon quarter-finals a few weeks later. With that kind of pedigree on grass, Tsonga was the clear favourite. But he was out-played by Dodig and to make matters worse, he slipped and fell on his right hand in the final set, causing damage that could rule him out of Wimbledon. “I think it’s serious. I didn’t do an exam for the moment, but it sounds very bad,” Tsonga said.
Heat beat Thunder to level NBA finals Greg Heakes
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA: LeBron James (in pic) scored 32 points and Chris Bosh had 16 points on his return to the starting lineup as the Miami Heat beat Oklahoma City 100-96 to level the NBA finals at one game apiece. Forward Bosh, who started his first game since the middle of May, also grabbed 15 boards while guard Dwyane Wade rebounded from a poor performance in game one to finish with 24 points and five assists in Thursday’s wire-to-wire win. Kevin Durant scored 32 points for the Thunder who had their nine-game win streak at home snapped in front of a crowd of 18,203 at the Chesapeake Arena.
The best-of-seven series now switches to Miami for game three on Sunday. It marked the fifth consecutive playoff game in which James had scored 30 points or more, setting an all-time Miami postseason record. The Heat jumped on the Thunder from the opening bell, seizing control in the first quarter by compiling a 17point lead at one point. They led 55-43 at the half. But the Thunder made them work for it in the fourth quarter, cutting the Heat lead to just two points late in the game before James sealed the victory with a pair of free throws. It was the first start for Bosh since the opening game of the Eastern Conference semi-finals. Bosh had to come off the bench for the previous four games.
