he mother of all hikes — water tariff revision by the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) — as left all in general and the commercial users in particular, gasping for water. Two days after the phenomenal tariff revision, the AP Hotels Association says this was the proverbial last straw on camel's back and the only alternative open to the commercial users is to “commit mass suicide.” The unprecedented tariff hike dealt a serious blow to various categories of people. While the normal domestic category customers received 50 per cent increase from Rs6 to Rs10 for 015 per kilolitre slab, the commercial and industrial category customers had to bear 450 per cent increase in their basic slab of 0-15 per kilolitre. The exclusive residents of gated communities, residential housing colonies and societies have also been hit by the current Rs10 per KL to Rs40 per KL. While mineral water based units have announced that they will be forced increase the mineral water cha-

rges to meet their requirements. Among the commercial category, city-based hotels seem the worst affected. According to Andhra Pradesh Hotels Association, the GHMC area has over 15,000 large medium and small size hotels, restaurants and bakeries in its limits. Speaking to Postnoon today, president of Andhra Pradesh Hotels Association GV Krishnaiah said that with the fresh water tariff revision, they are on the brink. “The State government had already burdened them with an electricity rate hike, service tax Value Added Tax (VAT) recently besides the imposition of 50 per cent additional property tax by GHMC in the name of

rationalisation. “We (Hotel Owners) do not have any option but to commit suicide with the fresh hike in water charges.” The hotel leader says besides all the governmental battering, they were also squeezed by the prolonged Telangana agitation since 2009 in more ways than one. According to Krishnaiah, the T-agitation and other factors had brought down the turnover of hotel industry by 40 per cent and the occupancy ratio in majority of hotels have come down to 20 per cent from normal 60 per cent and adds that many of the hotel owners have defaulted on their loans due to

We are already facing many problems with ever growing inflation and 11 times petrol prices have been hiked within a year. The increase in drinking water charges compounded our problems further more. I request the government to reduce the charges immediately and give us relief. V. Srinivas, resident of Sri Balaji West County

Since Kiran Kumar Reddy became chief minister everything is increasing. Apart from inflation the rates of electricity cooking gas and VAT have increased. Increase in water charges is another hike in that series. It seems the State government has forgotten the welfare of its citizens and what it only knows how to burden people. We cannot simply bear this hike and the state must reduce this. K. Narasimha Rao, Resident of Sri Balaji West County

the slump down in economic activities. “Why are we alive?” many ask now. Apart from all this is the ever galloping inflation that comes in different shapes. “The non-stop inflation march has led to a rise in input costs for the hoteliers by 30-40 per cent . Milk per litre was sold at Rs 22 a year ago but now it has reached to Rs 32 per litre. Not only these, all food and other items have registered unprecedented increase due to the inflation. This has impacted the hotel industry by increasing its input cost," Krishnaiah said. Emphasising on the fact that hotels in GHMC limits pay around Rs60 crore tax to the State government, Krishnaiah wondered how the government could be so cruel as to burden the industry more. The association has over 2,000 hotels as its members. “Before we die, we will launch an agitation against the water hike,” declared Krishnaiah. First the Association would meet the chief minister to bring the problems being faced by the hotel industry to his notice and request him to reduce the increased water tariff and other taxes for the hotel industry. It would then think of protest methods. The tariff for water manuf-

I don't think it is as stressful as it is made out to be. This is a temporary thing that students have to go through to compensate for lost time. However, it should not be stretched for too long.

Students who attend college all seven days are mostly students who aim for the IITs. It is a sacrifice they have to make and seem to have no qualms about it. They have to lose out on more than just a holiday.

It becomes extremely stressful if one has to study without any break. The productivity goes down and what they learn also becomes negligible. It is a must to get a days break in between studying.

Schools face pressure to work full week Osama Salman Salman.o@postnoon.com

“O

ur college timings are from 8am to 6pm. But after the Sakala Janula Samme, we are working till even 8pm, apart from working on Sundays,” says Ravindra Babu, principal, Sri Chaitanya Junior Kalasala in Yousufguda. Though schools have recast their timings apparently for the

best interests of their students, parental pressure is admitted by many schools. “We do face a lot of parental pressure to work on Sundays as well as festive holidays. In fact, the parents insisted that we work even on Eid this year. But because it is a government holiday, we could not work,” says Balaji Kumar. “Parents definitely come to us and request us to extend the study hours as well as work se-

ven days a week. They insist that whatever we already have isn’t enough and with the T-strike just over, they don’t want to take chances,” says Sushil Reddy, lecturer, Royal Junior College. Parents on the other hand, have postponed their vacations until after the examinations to accommodate with their child’s study routine. “I go to Nizamabad every year for Diwali and spend a week there. This year, however, I

had to cancel it because my son does not find time as he has to study throughout the week. I feel sorry for him, but it is a compromise he has to make,” says Sujatha Reddy, whose son Sudheer Reddy studies in New Vision Junior College. “A lot of parents have had to adjust to the new routine and almost everyone is all-right with it,” she continued. peaking to Postnoon, managing director of the Water Board DS Rami Reddy appeared unfazed. “We'd to revise the tariff as there was Rs16-crore revenue deficit for the Board owing to hike in employees' salaries, in electricity and water purification charges. The Board is getting Rs35 crore revenue per month when its actual monthly requirements are around Rs50 crore. acturing units has also been increased from the existing Rs40 to Rs100 per kilolitre. CPI State secretary K Narayana on Saturday demanded the government to withdraw or face a stir. He says the steep water tariff hike coming after power hike, VAT, property tax and inflation is killing people and business. “Electric shock, water cannons, petrol flames, VAT and what not. The CPI demands the government to withdraw the water rate hike as it is the basic necessity,” Narayana said.

K. SHASHANK, STUDENT:

Due to the bandhs, the students are forced to study every day. I feel it is alright as this won't continue for more than a month or two. For such a short period, it is okay to study seven days a week. Francis College, Villa Marie College, St Ann’s College and the likes, aren’t following the new trend. A lecturer from St Francis College says that they are ahead of time despite the long break in between. “We don’t want to pressurise and burden the students more than what they are already going through. The students need a break on Sundays to refresh their minds. If you don’t give that to them, then their minds will become unproductive,” she added. (Concluded)

Mayor clings to seat, tension in GHMC

Mohamed Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: By all indications, the mayoral elections to the GHMC would be delayed at least by a month. The official procedure requires at least a month to complete the mayoral elections and the new mayor is supposed to have been in office by December 3. With less than 20 days remaining for her two-year term to end, mayor Banda Karthika Chandra Reddy has shown no inclination to quit to pave way for the election of a new mayor of the MIM as per the agreement reached between two political parties in 2009 after the first election to the corporation. The mayor, it is known, has tried to get another year in office but the partner in power, MIM, had not favoured it. MIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi wrote to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana requesting them to allow the MIM to take over the mayoral seat. Postnoon has learnt that the party leadership had already asked the mayor to tender her resignation 10 days ago. According to Congress corporator from Khairatabad division Shaik Shareef, the party had already directed the mayor to

resign immediately from her post for election of a new mayor. He further said that if she shows reluctance to resign, then the party will be forced to issue whip to her. “The possibility of getting an extension has been ruled out for the mayor. Apart from this, the party high command has already asked the mayor to resign from her post 10 days ago. If she does not obey the order, the party will issue a whip to her to tender her resignation,” Shariff told Postnoon.

GHMC deputy mayor Jaffer Hussain also made it clear that his party would take over the mayor’s post and refuted the reports of any extension to the present mayor.”As per the agreement, it is our term now to take over the mayor’s seat. Our party president Asaduddin Owaisi had already written a letter to PCC president and CM about the change of guard. Our party is waiting for the Congress to react now,” he added. On the other hand, officials of the corporation are in confu-

hile the MIM is tightlipped about its mayor candidate, the race for deputy mayor's post has already begun in the Congress camp. Many senior functionaries of the party, who have become corporators now, are trying their luck and began their lobbying to get the deputy mayor's post. Among these competitors, Kukatpally corporator Gottimukkala Vengal Rao seems to be leading the race, given his association with the

Congress for 30 years. Vengal Rao had in the past served the party in many capacities such as Kukatpally Town president, Youth Congress president and Single Window president of the party. Speaking to Postnoon on Monday, Vengal Rao hoped that the party would reward him with deputy mayor's post in recognition of his services. “I have been serving the party for the last three decades in Kukatpally in various capacities. I was the only one from the party who had won the

election in the last election in Kukatpally circle. “I have already met the Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana, Chief Minister, Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee president D Nagender and other top leaders of the party for their support to my candidature. If I get the deputy mayor's post, I will strive to strengthen the party in Kukatpally circle which has eight corporation seats," Vengal Rao said, underlining his determination.

sion over the convening of a Special General Body Meeting (SGBM) for election of a new mayor from the MIM. According to these officials, they will be hard-pressed for time if she delays resigning. But for this to happen, the present mayor has to tender her resignation first by calling an SGBM. “We need to hold two special general body meetings, one for accepting the resignation of the Mayor, and the other for election of a new mayor. As per rules We can hold both Meeting on different dates with a gap of a week ,” GHMC secretary MSS Somaraju told Postnoon. He said that he did not receive any direction from the Mayor for convening of the SGBM so far and added if they get any direction he will initiate the process of election. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Abid Rasool Khan has said that the Congress will not go back on its commitment. “Whenever the Congress commits for something, it will stand by it. If the MIM is willing to give an extension to the present Mayor, then there will be a possibility of the Congress ruling for another year. Otherwise, the question of getting an extension does not arise at all,” Rasool Khan said.

Little warriors who fought off cancer

Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com

“M

y 13-month-old daughter was detected with ALU cancer. She used to wake up in the middle of the night crying and had problems with her lungs. She used to snore a lot as well. A doctor suggested that I get a blood test and that is when it was detected. It was a shocking time for my wife and I,” Harinder Reddy said, recalling the traumatic experience that his daughter Sri Tulasi, who is now six years old, went through. Fortunately, Tulasi fought the disease and is now cancer free. Apollo Cancer Hospital and CURE Foundation hosted a colourful Children's Day at Apollo Cancer Hospital to celebrate the child cancer survivors — children who combated cancer and are now leading a normal life. Eighty per cent of all childhood cancers are curable in contrast to only 65 per cent in adults. Harinder Reddy said that doctors told him that Tulasi had only 20 per cent chance of survival. “This was a testing time for my family. The first chemotherapy session was the hardest. Tulasi was in extreme pain. She was, however, bravely combating it. She officially became cancer-free when she was two-and-a-half years old,” he said. It is said that when God takes something, he takes back with interest. Harinder's second child, six-year-old Madhusudhan Reddy was diagnosed with Hodgkin cancer in May this year. “I discovered that he had a lump on his neck. I got that checked immediately and was told that he too is suffering from cancer. Madhusudhan's cancer is light and curable and the treatment is going on. With my daughter's brush with cancer, I have hope that he too will survive this disease,” he said.

The symptoms of a child having cancer can be — continued, unexplained weight loss, headaches, often with early morning vomiting, increased swelling or persistent

pain in bones, joints, back, or legs, lump or mass, especially in the abdomen, neck, chest, pelvis, or armpits, development of excessive bruising, bleeding, or rash, constant infections, a whitish colour behind the pupil, nausea which persists or vomiting without nausea, constant tiredness or noticeable paleness, eye or vision changes which occur suddenly and persist and recurrent or persistent fevers of unknown origin. Dr SVSS Prasad, senior consultant medical oncologist at Apollo Hospital, pointed out that early detection of cancer is crucial to the treatment. “It is extremely important that parents are not afraid of making their child go through the treatment. They need to support the child which goes a long way in curing cancer,” he said. “Children must be made aware of what they are going through. It is the only way that they will be careful. They will know what to expect and what not to,” opined Harinder.

Rai to defend CAG numbers on telecom scam today NEW DELHI: Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Vinod Rai, will appear today (Tuesday) before the Joint Parliament Committee (JPC) in the 2G spectrum allocation scam probe. Vinod Rai is expected to explain to the panel how the auditor arrived at a presumptive loss figure of Rs 1.76 lakh crore and to counter the figure floated by his former auditor RP Singh. Vinod Rai's explanation will be important in the probe as RP Singh on Monday reportedly stuck to his stand of pegging the presumptive loss at Rs 2,645 crore during his deposition before the parliamentary panel. Interestingly, Rai has written to the JPC requesting that Singh be asked to remain present when he deposes before the Committee on Tuesday. The lead auditor of the 2G telecom audit on Monday stuck to his stand that the loss due to spectrum allocation was Rs 2,645 crore and he had signed the final report on the alleged scam on the direction of his superiors. Appearing before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) going into the 2G issue, RP Singh, the then director general, Audit (Post and

Telecommunication), said quantification of loss was not part of the objectives of the CAG audit and the final figure of Rs 1.76 lakh crore was at best a "mathematical guess". Singh told the JPC that the Rs 2,645 crore figure, calculated by him, was the actual loss based on non-revision of entry fee for telecom operators and

the figure was part of the draft report. According to JPC chairman PC Chacko, the former CAG official maintained that the loss due to allocation of 2G spectrum could not be calculated as auction was neither recommended by TRAI nor contemplated by the government. Singh, who superannuated from service on August 31, told the Committee that to show

presumptive loss would be akin to introducing "individual judgement" to the audit exercise which was "questionable". Sources said during the meeting, Jaswant Singh (BJP) asked the former CAG official whether he signed the report and stood by it. RP Singh replied that he had signed the report but was not responsible for the inputs provided by other auditors who had taken into account views of the Finance Ministry and the Corporate Affairs Ministry. It is learnt that Yashwant Sinha (BJP) showed the former CAG official communication exchanged between him and finance secretary on the 2G issue. RP Singh was also questioned by members on the findings of the Field Audit Team (FAT) which had pegged the potential loss on 2G spectrum allocation at Rs 26,685 crore, Chacko said. Chacko said the FAT had projected the loss of revenue as Rs 26,685 crore on account of entry fee due to non-issue of license and loss of interest. Singh maintained that since there was no conclusive evidence for the loss he had dimissed the figure. A member of the

Committee said when Singh made this observation, Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI) retorted that if the CAG official had rights to over-rule his juniors then his superiors too had the authority to set aside his findings. Singh is also learnt to have maintained that revenue optimisation was not an "audit objective" and it was added as one of the objectives later. The opposition maintains that it was Singh who had earlier explained to the Public Accounts Committee how the figure of Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss was arrived at by the CAG. These parties have sought to know whether Singh was right in his earlier stand or on his revised position. BJP and other opposition parties are not convinced with Singh's position on the loss to the exchequer in the 2G spectrum scam. Singh, who was also summoned by PAC during its last meeting, was prevented from presenting his case when the Congress members demanded that CAG Vinod Rai should recuse himself as the former director general (Audit) may not be able to express himself freely in front of his former boss.

ATS cop gave money to accused MUMBAI: A police constable attached to Maharashtra AntiTerrorism Squad (ATS) had sent Rs 3,000 by money order in 2008 to an approver-turnedhostile accused, currently lodged in a city jail for his alleged role in the 2006 Malegaon bomb blasts, an RTI query has revealed. In response to an RTI query filed by Gulzaar Azmi, general secretary (legal cell) of a socio-cultural organisation, Jamiat Ulama-EMaharashtra, it was found that Sadashiv Abhimanyu Patil, a constable attached to Nashik unit of ATS, had sent Rs 1,000 thrice to accused Abrar Ahmed through money order in August, September and November 2008 from his residential address at police headquarters in Nashik. The RTI reply was received from city's Byculla jail on July 5 which gave details of money orders the 34-year-old accused had received. "The real face of ATS has been uncovered. Then ATS chief K P Raghuvanshi had falsely implicated Abrar and made him turn an approver saying that they would take care of him and his family and sent him money," Azmi alleged. Through Patil, the ATS had sent money to Abrar so that he does not turn hostile in future, he claimed.

British paper now turns readers into newshounds Katy Lee

LONDON: A British newspaper has thrown open its office doors, let the readers stride in, and invited them to peer over reporters’ shoulders — digitally, at least. The website of the leftleaning Guardian daily is publishing its ‘newslist’ — a schedule of stories its journalists are working on — and asking readers to help shape the coverage by contacting its reporters on Twitter. In a country known for its raucous, fiercely competitive press, where tabloids have sometimes paid journalists at rival papers for access to this list, the idea seemed risky. “The immediate reaction from other journalists was to say it seemed like insanity,” science editor James Randerson told AFP in the Guardian’s cavernous newsroom. “Competitors are going to see what you’re doing. But we haven’t had problems with competitors stealing stories from us, or breaking embargos — we’re careful to keep exclusives and embargoed stories off the list.” The computer screen behind him displays five grids showing the day’s domestic, foreign, sport, business and science coverage. A link to the writer’s Twitter page accompanies every story, so readers can contact them with tip-offs or suggestions. “The overwhelming reaction was very positive,” says Randerson. “Most people quite enjoy the voyeurism of being able to see into the workings of a paper.” A key advantage is that editors get a better sense of what the audience wants. “There was a big health story one day and we hadn’t done enough on it,” he recalls. “We really got a sense from Twitter that people were worried about the future of the NHS (National Health Service). So the next day, we responded with a much bigger investigation. “You’ve got to take it with a pinch of salt, because Twitter is not representative of the world at large,” he admits. “But it’s

useful to have some feedback.” The paper’s national editor Dan Roberts said that in the wake of Britain’s phone hacking scandal — which forced the Rupert Murdochowned News of the World to

In a country known for its raucous, fiercely competitive press, where tabloids have sometimes paid journalists at rival papers for access to this list, the idea seemed risky close down — people have a greater interest in seeing how news is made. ‘People getting involved’ “There’s a cynicism about

journalism at the moment,” he says. “People no longer trust the model that goes: ‘We’ll work out in secret what we’re going to tell you, and you don’t need to know whether we hacked someone’s phone or lied to get it, or whether we made it up’. To gain credibility, in a more transparent age, you need to show your workings.” The Guardian admits the experiment has so far only attracted a small minority of the website’s 2.9 million daily readers. Randerson estimates that reporters receive roughly a hundred messages a day about the newslist, of which just a handful are useful. But Charlie Beckett, director of the Polis media think-tank, said this was to be expected — and did not mean the open newslist was a failure. “The people getting involved are the kind of people

who used to write letters to the editor,” he told AFP. “They’re news nerds. Not many people are going to spend all day coming up with ideas for the Guardian. Probably only one percent of readers will ever contribute, and only one percent of their ideas will be good — but that’s better than nothing.” The experiment is not the first of its kind; for two years Norran, a Swedish regional newspaper, has been running a chat room where readers can suggest story ideas. The paper says this has driven traffic to the site, bringing back advertisers who fled during the recession. In Canada the Winnipeg Free Press has gone a step further, opening a cafe where readers can discuss the news with journalists face-to-face. For the Guardian’s parent company Guardian Media Group, interactive experiments like the open newslist are part of a ‘digital-first’ strategy that it hopes can reverse last year’s £33 million ($52.9 million, 38.4 million euros) operating losses. The Guardian’s 190-yearold print edition now has a circulation of just 233,000 copies. GMG’s chief executive Andrew Miller warns the group could run out of cash in three years, so online success is crucial. Executives want the website, which in September launched a separate edition for US readers, to boost the group’s digital revenues from £47 million this year to £91 million by 2014/16. Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger hopes that more participatory journalism will attract readers and therefore advertisers and Roberts believes the open newslist will be adopted by other newsrooms. “People want professional journalism, but they also want to discuss it,” he says. “There’s a large number of people now who really engage in the news. It’s a small sub-set of the readership, but at a global level, that’s millions of people who want to be part of the news process.”

No tapping at Murdoch units in Australia SYDNEY: An internal review of accounts at Rupert Murdoch’s Australian operations prompted by the British hacking scandal found “no evidence” of phone tapping or untoward payments, the company said on Monday. But News Limited also announced strict editorial guidelines only allowing the use of private investigators in “exceptional circumstances” and with the permission of senior staff. The Australian firm conducted a three-month review of major payments dating back to 2006 after the firestorm over phone hacking at its British counterpart News International which saw News of the World axed. Almost 700,000 transactions worth Aus$335 million (US$345 million) were scrutinised by a team of 26 auditors and the company said it had found “no evidence of illegitimate telephone surveillance or payments to public officials”. News Limited said private investigators had been used on a “small number of cases” and, “where required”, the firms had been asked to retrospectively provide written assurances that their work processes were legal and legitimate. The cases of two people who came forward in Australia after the British scandal and claimed their phones had been hacked had also been examined and News Limited said “no evidence was found to support the claims.” Reporters responsible for the stories in question were extensively interviewed and were found to have “applied normal practices of professional journalism,” it added. But the company said it would roll out a new overarching editorial code of conduct in response to the British crisis, which saw two of Murdoch’s top executives quit and the media magnate himself hauled before parliament.

Occupy in no business Wall Street area merchants protest against protests, fed up with side effects NEW YORK: Small-scale entrepreneurs from the Manhattan neighbourhood near the Occupy Wall Street camp on Monday begged the movement to abandon its nearly twomonth-old protest, saying it was ruining business. A small gathering of fed-up businessmen on the steps of City Hall urged Mayor Michael Bloomberg to act against what they said were the dangerous side-effects of a protest claiming to defend America's 99 percent against the super-elite one percent. "It's a disaster," said John Costalas, owner of the family-run Essex World Cafe, describing how protesters from their tent camp in Zuccotti Park use his restaurant's bathrooms to wash and use the toilet. "They come in there and bother you. They take the toilets, they take baths, and then the customers don't want to come," he said. "That's not the 99 percent. We are the ones who work 15 hours a day, seven days a week just to pay the landlord and the rent. We're the 99 percent." Fong Zhao, manager of the Hoyip Chinese restaurant for the last 18 years, said he was also angry. He complained that protesters — whose urban tent

summer, said that as a result of protest-related police barriers and other disruption, sales had dropped about 20 percent. He has laid off 20 of his nearly 100-strong staff.

Showing a video taken on his phone of a woman putting a white bag next to his restaurant's black garbage bags, Zhao said: "You're not allowed to throw that away — not like that. I can get fined." Echoing other frustrated locals, the immigrant entrepreneur said police barricades erected in nearby streets to control demonstrators hampered his supply chain. "It's slowing down business. It's hard for deliveries because of the police barriers," he said.Zhao said he was ‘in the 99 percent’ and sympathized with

OWS attacks on corrupt bankers and politicians. But he said he believed the protest camp, which started on September 17, had been hijacked. "I sympathize with what they stand for, but now it's become more of a chaotic crew." The rally by half a dozen business owners and managers appeared only loosely organized. But those participating said they wanted to be heard after all the attention paid to the several hundred demonstrators camping at Zuccotti Park, surrounded by police. OAKLAND: Hundreds of riot police dismantled an anti-Wall Street camp in California on Monday, arresting over 30 protesters as US authorities get tough against the two-month-old protest movement. In the second such action in two days on the US West Coast, officers moved in to clear demonstrators camped out in Oakland, where protests have descended into clashes repeatedly in recent weeks. Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said the early morning operations was prompted by a recent murder that happened adjacent to the camp in the San Francisco area city. Police said 32 people were detained in all. "I'll be back!" shouted one protester, as she was being handcuffed at the encampment at the site outside City Hall which has been a weeks-long source of tension for the west coast US city.

Gillard to remove Uranium ban on India

A

ustralia's prime minister has called for the country's ban on selling uranium to India to be overturned. Julia Gillard wrote in a newspaper column that it made no sense to sell nuclear material to China, Japan and the US, but not to India. Ms Gillard's Labor Party introduced the ban in 2008 because India had not signed the non-proliferation treaty. Australia holds about 40% of the world's proven reserves of uranium and supplies about 20% of the world market. The country has no nuclear power facilities itself but allows the export of uranium for peaceful purposes. 'Dynamic, democratic India' India has a long-standing nuclear power programme, but also has nuclear weapons. Delhi has refused to sign the non-proliferation treaty, arguing that it is discriminatory because only countries that had tested nuclear weapons before 1967 are allowed to legally possess them. Ms Gillard, writing before the Labor Party conference next month, urged her colleagues to drop their support for the ban, describing India as a close partner.

Rushdie makes Facebook bend

Author gets to keep Salman instead of Ahmed as his name on profile page after a tussle with FCB authority

WASHINGTON: British author Salman Rushdie has won a tussle with Facebook over his profile page on the social network. Rushdie's run-in with Facebook stemmed from his insistence he be allowed to use his middle name — Salman, the one he is universally known by - instead of his first name -Ahmed — on Facebook. Rushdie recounted the saga in a series of tweets on Monday to the more than 113,000 followers of his Twitter account @salmanrushdie. Facebook requires its more than 800 million members to use their real names on the social networking site and also

bars pseudonyms. Rushdie said Facebook deactivated his page over the weekend "saying they didn't believe I was me." Rushdie said he sent a photograph of his passport to

Facebook. "They said yes, I was me, but insisted I use the name Ahmed which appears before Salman on my passport and which I have never used," he said. "They have reactivated my FB page as 'Ahmed Rushdie,' in spite of the world knowing me as Salman. Morons," he said. Rushdie even tried reaching out directly to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on Twitter. "Where are you hiding, Mark? Come out here and give me back my name!" he said. Failing to get a response from Facebook, Rushdie turned to what he called "ridicule by the Twitterverse." "Dear #Facebook, forcing

me to change my FB name from Salman to Ahmed Rushdie is like forcing J. Edgar to become John Hoover," he said. "Or, if F. Scott Fitzgerald was on #Facebook, would they force him to be Francis Fitzgerald? What about F. Murray Abraham?" Rushdie's pleas were eventually answered. "Victory! #Facebook has buckled! I'm Salman Rushdie again. I feel SO much better. An identity crisis at my age is no fun. Thank you Twitter!" he said. "Just received an apology from The #Facebook Team," he added. "All is sweetness and light."

Diaspora co-founder found dead at 22 SAN FRANCISCO: A 22year-old co-founder of privacythemed online social network Diaspora died during the weekend, the San Francisco coroner confirmed on Monday. Local media reports indicated that Ilya Zhitomirskiy may have committed suicide, but the coroner's office said it will take several weeks to determine the cause of death. Diaspora and Facebook are rivals but mysteriously Facebook’s co-founder Mark Zuckerberg was among those who financially backed Diaspora.

Italy loses its favourite punchbag

I

talian comedians are in mourning after the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi, whose gaffes and scandalprone profile provided satirists with easy pickings for nearly two decades. “No-one was like Berlusconi,” said Emilio Giannelli, cartoonist for the topselling Corriere della Sera daily, whose caricature of a dwarfish Berlusconi in high-heeled shoes to make him taller has been famous for years. “Berlusconi was the ideal subject. He broke the wall of sound of satire. Think of someone who said he wanted to call his party ‘Go Pussy!’” the cartoonist said of the billionaire’s latest in a long line of quips. In a sketch on public Rai 3 television immediately after Berlusconi’s resignation, the comedian Antonio Cornacchione mockingly thanked Berlusconi on behalf of all of Europe’s satirists for giving them nearly two decades of material. “You never abandoned us,” said Cornacchione, who has impersonated Berlusconi for years, as he reeled off some of the most famous gaffes, like making German Chancellor Angela Merkel wait at a 2009 NATO summit while he finished a phone call in front of her. The sketch was only partly intended for comic effect — Berlusconi’s political, legal and sexual adventures have been a defining feature of Italian media, cafe chats and dinner party conversations for many years. “Berlusconi sells. The only day when

we had a dip in sales from the previous year was the day we didn’t have him on the front page,” the editor of a large leftwing daily told AFP a few months ago as Berlusconi’s star faded. Ever since first entering politics in the early 1990s with a party named after a football chant - Forza Italia (Go Italy) the colourful tycoon has in turns enthralled and disgusted Italians, but he was never boring. Pierferdinando Casini, leader of the centrist UDC party, said a politician who personalised politics to the extent that Berlusconi did was also helpful for the opposition because he could be blamed if anything went wrong. “Berlusconi has been a great alibi for everyone,” Casini said, adding: “The fall of this government will force us to confront each other.” As Berlusconi aged and the economic crisis in Italy deepened, the number of Italians disillusioned with him has surged. In his latest poll, the media tycoon had an approval rating of just 22 per cent. He has continued to be a popular subject for conversation, however, exasperating dinner party hosts and dispiriting Italians abroad who have had to face the many jokes about Berlusconi’s bad boy behaviour. “When I go abroad, every time I say I’m Italian, I have to endure all the jokes about Berlusconi, the bungabunga” - a reference to Berlusconi’s allegedly raunchy parties - sighed one Italian executive.

Kingfisher Q2 loss widens to Rs 468.66 cr

Rs 2 NEW DELHI: Petrol prices may be cut by Rs 2 a litre from Wednesday as global oil rates have softened and the rupee has stabilised against the US dollar. The cut in prices would negate the Rs 1.80 per litre petrol price hike effected earlier this month. “Gasoline (petrol) averaged USD 115.8 per barrel in November, as against the USD 121 per barrel price taken at the time of the Rs 1.80 per litre hike in petrol price. Sensex weak MUMBAI: The BSE benchmark Sensex fell by 83 points in opening trade today, extending its three-day losing streak as funds and retail investors succumbed to selling pressure driven by weak corporate earnings and high inflation. A weakening trend on other Asian bourses also had a negative impact on the trading sentiment. The 30-share BSE Sensex, which has lost over 450 points in the past three sessions, fell further by 83.00 points, or 0.49 per cent, to 17,035.74 in the first few minutes of trade today. In a similar fashion, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index declined by 22.90 points, or 0.44 per cent, to 5,125.45. Stocks of the realty, banking auto and IT sectors bore the brunt of the selling pressure, dragging the Sensex down. Stocks of Tata Motors were down by 1.88 per cent to Rs 174.55, while Mahindra and Mahindra fell by 1.11 per cent to Rs 781.65

per US dollar, which is less than the October average,” a senior official in one of the three state-run oil marketing companies said. “The reduction in oil price warrants a cut of Rs 1.86 per litre in the petrol price, excluding all taxes,” he said, adding that retail prices may go down by about Rs 2 per litre. If the rupee remained stronger, the price could have come down further. The rupee lost 15 paise to Rs 50.45 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange

on Tuesday due to appreciation of the American currency against the euro and other rivals overseas and a weak opening in the domestic equity market. Increased demand for the American currency from banks and importers also put pressure on the rupee. Dealers attributed the rupee’s fall to dollar gains against the euro overseas and a lower opening in the stock market. The rupee had closed 18 paise lower at Rs 50.30/31 per US dollar in Monday’s trade. PTI

MUMBAI: Debt-ridden Kingfisher Airlines on Tuesday reported that its net loss doubled to Rs 468.66 crore in the quarter ended September 30, 2011, as higher fuel prices depressed operating margins. The debt-ridden carrier had reported a net loss of Rs 230.81 crore in the same period last year, Kingfisher Airlines said in a regulatory filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange. The company’s income from operations, however, rose by 10.5 per cent to Rs 1,528.16 crore in the JulySeptember quarter from Rs 1,382.72 crore in the year earlier period. Meanwhile, shares of the company were trading at Rs 21.50 apiece, up 0.70 per cent from their previous close on the BSE at 0930 hours.

Bankers have made it clear that Kingfisher’s promoters will have to infuse Rs 800 crore worth of fresh equity into the company if they are to consider a second restructuring of existing debt, even as opposition mounted to any bailout of the private carrier. The bankers have asked the troubled airline to come out with a “credible” plan. The lenders — a 13-bank consortium led by SBI, who were yet to decide on ways to soften the troubled airline’s Rs 7,057.08 crore debt burden — are due to meet Kingfisher management on Tuesday. Kingfisher had suffered a loss of Rs 1,027 crore in 2010-11 and is estimated to have debt of over Rs 7,000 crore. The airline has cancelled several flights over the past few weeks.

Baba Kalyani fumes at dicey steel policy Postnoon News

HYDERABAD: Forging companies fumed at the lack of transparency in the export of iron ore, while the policies of the Government are not favouring the domestic steel industry any which way. Addressing a press conference here on Monday in connection with the 20th International Forging Congress, chairman of Kalyani group and Bharat Forge Ltd Baba Kalyani said that poor management of resources was resulting in the irrational rise in steel prices. This was impacting the margins of forging companies. While “we find pleasure” in exporting the ore to china instead of making steel out of it, he said. “You dig out material from the ground, put it on a ship and export it to China. What value addition is it creating for the gross domestic product?” He fumed at the way how

China’s steel industry was producing 600 million tonne (mt) and India about 60 mt of capacity. Almost 30 mt of that capacity came in the last 10 years. He asserted that the forging industry was demanding a policy for iron and steel. He hastened to add that ban on exports of the ore would not,

Lack of proper policy incentivised the exports of the ore and made export of finished product costly the iron ore was being produced and exported. He said the growth of steel industry was stagnant for years and a lack of proper policy incentivised the exports of the ore and made export of finished product costly.

however, solve the problem. China restricted the export of coking coal by levying an export duty of 40 per cent, as it did not want the raw material to go out of the country. The Rs. 15,000-crore Indian forging industry having about 500 units

was facing difficulty due to the arbitrary pricing by steel makers. Kalyani said the sector had been depending on the automobile industry for almost 70 per cent of its business while about 25 per cent of the production was exported. The domestic forging sector would reach a capacity of over four mt a year by March 2014 from the existing 2.3. “The industry is also set to increase capacities three times over the next 8-10 years with investments of over $3 billion in next three years.,” India might emerge as the major source for forged components in the world’s automobile and industrial economy. The slowdown in automobile industry would bring down the growth of forging industry from 20 per cent to eight per cent this year. The major problem was the rates of interest, he observed.

Following the most tortuous time of his career, Hamilton took the chequered flag for the third time this year, matching the feat of McLaren team-mate Jenson Button, and 17th of his career. The triumph was due in part to the puncture sustained by Sebastian Vettel to the right-rear tyre on his Red Bull just two corners into the 55-lap race at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Following the race, he added: “It is early days yet, but hopefully this is the start of something very good.” Mum Carmen was equally elated as she told Press Association Sport: “I’m so proud, so happy for him. “It’s been a really great weekend. I might start coming to a few more races now.” It would appear Hamilton has found a part of the “happy

SCG to stage 100th Test against India SYDNEY: The Sydney Cricket Ground will become only the third venue to host 100 Test matches when Australia play India in January. The SCG will follow Lord’s in England and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which have also reached the mark, when it is used for the second Test against India starting on January 3. The SCG Trust said Monday it is planning to mark the occasion throughout the five days with the specific nature of the celebrations still in the planning stages. The last time India played in a Test match at the ground in 2008 Australia claimed a dramatic last-day victory by 122 runs. Relations between the two teams were severely strained as Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh was accused of racially taunting Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds during that Sydney Test. The fall-out rumbled on throughout the remainder of the four-Test series after Harbhajan was cleared of the abuse charges. The SCG hosted its first Test in 1882 with Australia claiming a five-wicket victory over England. Ashes rivals England have featured in 54 of the Tests. Overall Australia have won 54 Tests at the SCG, lost 28 and drawn 17. “In a world of unending change, when nothing seems certain, Test cricket at the SCG is powerfully attractive,” SCG Trust chairman Rodney Cavalier said Monday. “Tests are recognisably 19th century played in a contemporary setting.”

It is always nice to bat with VVS,” Dravid told mediapersons after the day’s play. Dravid struck a classy 119 before departing in the penultimate over. . In 2001, playing against

Australia at the same ground, the duo had stitched together 376 runs for the fifth wicket in the second innings with Laxman scoring 281 and Dravid 180. Riding on their partnership, India had staged a fairytale rally after being made to follow on and won the epic game. Two years later, they were involved in a 303 run partnership for the fifth wicket in Adelaide. Dravid said the secret of their chemistry lay in the long time that they have spent together in the Indian team. “Actually, we are batting with each other for so long... We really don’t need to say much to each other... We don’t talk a lot in the middle... We just say ‘keep going’ or ‘just relax’....” “He (Laxman) is a stroke player and looks to put pressure on the bowler... in a different sort of way... not the way Viru (Virender Sehwag) does... So it makes things easier for me at the other end.” Dravid said with Laxman, he can play at his own pace and

rotate the strike. “Today I think we batted well together and scored at the same pace as well,” he added. He also praised openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir saying they make things easier for the middle order by giving good starts at a rapid pace. “Definitely, that helps... If you got an opening partnership

like Viru and Gambhir, then it makes things a big difference... They are terrific openers.” “It’s great to bat at No.3... More often than not, they give us good starts... They score at such a rapid pace initially that it makes a lot easier for us in the middle order to come in and play as they have put the opposition in the back foot already,” he added.

Magic missing at Eden KOLKATA: Ruing the missing crowd at Eden and other cricketing grounds, India’s seasoned batsman Rahul Dravid Monday rued that the magic that the giant stadium once created was missing. With only around 10,000 spectators turning up to watch day one of the second Test between India and West Indies despite a media frenzy created over Sachin Tendulkar standing tantalizingly close to 100 international centuries, Dravid expressed sadness over the the

empty stands. Recalling his matches at the Eden in the 1990s, he said: “I remember coming here in the 90s and playing Tests where 100,000 people are watching you”. “... It is a little sad... But it is not only Calcutta... The situation is similar everywhere... people do follow Test cricket and a lot is written about it...,” he said. “I still remember there used to be a magic here in the ground back in the 90s,” he said at the end of the first day’s play.

Chinese man to sell tea containing panda poop that fights cancer

Want some Po-tea? A

man who claims it will have twice the anticancer properties of ordinary green tea has obtained a license for developing such a product from the Sichuan Province Copyright Administration. An Yanshi, who says he teaches foreigners calligraphy at Sichuan University, told reporters that his green tea could sell at 2,196 yuan (US$343) for 50 grams when it is harvested. And he said he would raise the price to make it the world’s most expensive tea because “pandas’ excrement is very rare.” “As pandas are regarded as the national treasure, the green tea cultivated by their excrement should be regarded as the national tea,” the Sichuan-based Tianfu Morning Post quoted An as saying. According to the newspaper, An got the idea of cultivating the special green tea after he learned that pandas could only absorb 30 percent of the nutrition in their food, mostly bamboo. “That means the other 70 percent of the nutrition is in their excrement,” An told the newspaper. He believed panda excrement contained natural anticancer substances that may “grow into the green tea plants” to help patients combat cancer. “The effect may be doubled as green tea itself can also prevent cancer,” An said. Medical doctors and experts, however, doubt whether An’s “national tea” can help fight cancer.

Fun and frolic in a flat world

“Theoretically, green tea may contain anti-cancer substances, but I have never heard of people using panda excrement to combat cancer,” said Sun Huichuan, a doctor at Shanghai’s Zhongshan Hospital. “So far, no scientific research can prove that the tea may have the special effect,” Tang Chunxiang, a senior engineer with the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, told the newspaper. “The teacher is probably using the fame of pandas to promote his products.” An adult giant panda produces about 20 kilograms of excrement every day, and at the Sichuan panda base more than 200 tons of excrement can be produced every year. Some of it is used as fertilizer to cultivate bamboo, but the rest is usually thrown away, Tang told the newspaper. The panda excrement green tea sparked heated online discussion, with many commentators criticizing An for trying to make money with his “pseudoscientific theory.” “An’s idea has enlightened us that we should also use panda excrement to cultivate other ‘national crops’ such as rice, flower, etc, and sell them at skyhigh prices,” said Qiao Zhifeng. And online poster Biubiu commented: “It’s so ridiculous. Why don’t they just directly eat the panda excrement to combat cancer?” When Sichuan University was contacted yesterday, it said it had no record of An as a teacher there.

A webbed romance WASHINGTON: Male nursery web spiders try to trick females into sex with worthless silkwrapped gifts. But females are not so easily impressed. Most gifts contain insects, but some gifts are inedible plant seeds or empty exoskeletons left after the prey has already been eaten, presumably by the male himself, useless from a female perspective. Males also ‘play dead’ if a female moves away and then attempt to re-establish mating, the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology reports. Maria J. Albo, genetic scientist at the University of the Republic, Montevideo, Uruguay, explained: “The evolution of

male deceit involves a complex equation of costs and benefits. “It costs the males to find and wrap a gift, but these costs can be reduced if the male does not have to first catch his gift, or gives one that has already been eaten,” said Albowho, who led the research, according to a a Montevideo statement. Male spiders were provided with either a potential gift of a fly, or a worthless item, such as a cotton wool ball, a dry flower head, a prey leftover (previously eaten housefly), or no gift at all. All the gifts were approximately the same size, so the females would not be able to tell what the gift was without unwrapping it.

It appears that both male and female spiders are apparently able to assess the value of the gift and modify their behaviour accordingly. Not only did the female spiders end mating sooner with an inedible gift, but male death feigning (thanatosis), which is triggered by the female attempting to end mating and run away with the gift, occurred in half of the matings involving an edible gift, but only once with a worthless gift.

Pool of dead LONDON: A man in the US dug a swimming pool in his backyard, only to find a historic cemetery dating back to the 1700s. Vincent Marcello lives in the French Quarter of New Orleans. When workers dug up his backyard for the pool, they unearthed 13 caskets stacked one on top of the other, the Daily Mail reported. The French Quarter is the oldest neighbourhood in New Orleans, founded in 1718.

The property used to be the St. Peter Cemetery before it was closed down. Marcello knew his land had historic ties but did not expect to find human remains, he told WDSU.com. Archaeologist Ryan Gray from the University of New Orleans, said: “Part of the reason why the cemetery was closed was because it was overcrowded, and historical accounts and complaints revealed that people couldn’t dig anywhere without hitting

However, the females are wise to deception and terminate mating early for worthless gifts.

Air pollution aggravates drought, flooding

R

ising air pollution levels can seriously affect cloud formation in ways that reduce precipitation in dry areas, while increasing rain, snowfall and severe storms in wet regions or seasons worldwide. New research provides the first clear evidence of how aerosols -- soot, dust and other small particles in the air -- can affect weather and climate patterns. The findings have important economic and water resource implications for regions across the US and around the world, say a team of researchers led by University of Maryland, the journal Nature Geoscience reports. "For the first time, we uncovered the long-term, net

impact of aerosols on cloud height and thickness, and the resultant changes in precipitation frequency and intensity," says Maryland's atmospheric

and oceanic science professor Zhanqing Li, who led the study. "These new findings of longterm impacts which we made using regional ground measure-

ments are also consistent with different findings we obtained from an analysis of NASA's global satellite products and have just published in a separate study. "Together, they attest to the needs of tackling both climate and environmental changes that matter so much to our daily life," says Li. Tony Busalacchi, who heads the Joint Scientific Committee, World Climate Research Program, notes the significance of the new findings. "Understanding interactions across clouds, aerosols and precipitation is one of the grand challenges for climate research in the decade ahead, as identified in a recent major conference," Busalacchi said.

SYDNEY: The ‘golden staph’, a group of common infectious bugs inhabiting our skin surface, becomes resistant to antibiotics by just making a small change in its DNA, exposing the seriously ill to additional risks. Staphylococcus, or staph, can cause rashes and abscesses. Timothy Stinear and Ben Howden, senior research fellows in microbiology and immunology at the University of Melbourne, have made the discovery. Golden staph develops resistance to the last-line antibiotic, vancomycin. “We have applied the latest genome sequencing technology to show that staph can readily become vancomycin (antibiotic) resistant by acquiring a single mutation in its DNA,” said Stinear, the journal Public Library of Science reports. “When the bacteria mutate, they are reprogramming themselves, changing their cell walls to resist the action of our antibiotics,” said Stinear, according to a Melbourne statement. “Worryingly, this mutation also makes staph more resistant to another last-line antibiotic, daptomycin, even though this drug had never been used for treatment,” said Howden. “These last-line therapies are more toxic and cause additional side-effects in already compromised patients,” added Howden.

Holistic view of mind, body and soul

Oral hygiene affects your heart P

eople who have their teeth scraped and cleaned had lowered their heart attack and stroke risk by 24 and 13 percent respectively, compared to those who never had a dental cleaning. These findings are based on a Taiwanese study of a database of more than 100,000 people who underwent dental cleaning and were followed for an average of seven years. Scientists considered tooth scaling frequent if it occurred at least twice or more in two

years; occasional tooth scaling was once or less in two years. “Protection from heart disease and stroke was more pronounced in participants who got tooth scaling at least once a year,” said Emily (ZuYin) Chen, cardiology fellow at the Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, who coauthored the study. Professional tooth scaling appears to reduce inflammation-causing bacterial growth that can lead to heart disease or stroke, she said, according to a Veterans Hospital state-

that low vitamin C intake is linked with the worse outcomes for heart patients. “We found that adequate intake of vitamin C was associated with longer survival in patients with heart failure,” said Eun Kyeung Song, assistant professor in nursing, College of Medicine, University of Ulsan, who also led the study. Among the average age of 61 from the 212 patients, about one-third of participants were women and approximately 45 percent of the participants had moder-

ment. The study included more than 51,000 adults who had received at least one full or partial tooth scaling and a similar number of people matched with gender and health conditions who had no tooth scaling. None of the participants had a history of heart attack or stroke at the beginning of the study, under the Taiwan National Health insurance data base, the source of the information used in the analysis. In a separate study, researchers found a big difference in heart and stroke risk based on the number of

remaining teeth. Anders Holmlund, Centre for Research and Development of the County Council of Gävleborg, Sweden, and senior consultant (specialized dentistry) studied 7,999 participants with periodontal (gum) disease and found people with fewer than 21 teeth had a 69 per cent increased risk of heart attack compared to those with the most teeth. A higher number of deepened periodontal pockets (infection of the gum around the base of the tooth) had a 53 percent increased risk of heart attack compared to those with the fewest pockets.

Low vitamin C levels elevates heart failure risk P atients with low count of vitamin C are 2.4 times more likely to have higher levels of hsCRP, a protein that risks inflammation and heart disease. A study by a team of researchers from University of Ulsan in South Korea said participants with low vitamin C intake and hsCRP (High-sensitivity C-reactive protein) over three mg per litre were nearly twice as likely to die from cardiovascular disease within one year of follow-up. The South Korean study is the first to demonstrate

18

ate to severe heart failure, according to an Ulsan statement. The study completed a four-day food diary verified by a registered dietician and a software programme that calculated their vitamin C intake and blood tests that measured the hsCRP. Researchers divided the participants into two groups, one group with levels over three mg per litre of hsCRP and another with lower levels. Then the patients were followed for one year to determine the length of time from their first visit to the emergency department due to car-

diac problems or death. The researchers also found that 82 patients (39 per cent) had inadequate vitamin C intake, according to a criteria set by the Institute of Medicine that allowed the researchers to estimate the likelihood of the patient’s diet to be habitually deficient in vitamin C based on a four-day food diary. After a year, 61 patients (29 per cent) had cardiac events, which included an emergency department visit or hospitalisation due to cardiac problems, or cardiac death.

A gastroscopy is a simple out patient procedure and can be performed in a few minutes. Complex procedures such as control of bleeding from upper intestine or placement of stents in patients of cancer can also be performed by endoscopists. These avoid hospitalisation and surgery and save on both time and expenses. Colonoscopes and endoscopes visualise large and small intestines, control bleedings, removal of polyps (small growths which can be potentially malignant) can be performed using these endoscopes. A deodenoscope can help clear the biliary or pancreatic duct stones. Cancers in this area cause jaundice and this can be relieved by placing stents. Most of the simple endoscopic procedures are safe. Complex procedures associated with a small percentage of complications and are ideally performed at centres with necessary expertise. Of late a capsule endoscope has been developed. This is a standard capsule sized instrument which when swallowed travels through the intestine. It’s battery has a life of eight hours and the cameras transmit 60,000 pictures which are analysed on a computer. This is simple and non invasive. At present its greatest limitation is cost and inability to perform any therapeutic procedure. Further technological innovations are expected in the near future and these should overcome limitations. W

ith winter around the corner, the ritual dusting down of old coats has begun. Well, who said you can't add colour and warmth at the same time to your old, rusty winter wardrobe? The trick is to team up your winter jackets with nice, colourful scarves because a scarf when tied up in style not only adds extra warmth but provides the perfect amount of noticeable flair and variety to any outfit. Scarves come in a variety of fabrics, shapes and sizes. The ways of scarf tying is limitless. Like an artist staring at a crisp, unblemished piece of canvas, getting started can be a little daunting but once you experiment with different knots, you will know what suits you best. The diverse techniques of tying scarves make it an exciting and versatile addition to any wardrobe. Designer Shashikanth Naidu is of the opinion that tying a knot that

fits perfectly makes all the difference. “Like everything else that you pick and wear from your wardrobe, choosing the right scarf should be important as well. There are so many different knots in which one can tie a scarf but it all depends on how you can carry it off. The way a man ties his knot affects the overall look,” says Shashikanth. There is an elegant look that comes with a scarf, giving the man who dons it an extra touch of confidence and swagger. The fact is, scarves make you look good. In fact, the right one can make the average man twice as hot. “The most common way to wear a scarf is to drape it loosely around the neck and leave it open. The simple sling protects you from the cold breeze without really suffocating the under layers of heavy fabric. It's ideal for those who want to keep warm and not necessarily bury their neck in wool,” says designer Neelam Ashley. A designer scarf can be tied in many different styles of knots for creative accessorising. “It's very

important that your scarf matches the rest of your outfit otherwise it just looks wrong. There are a variety of knots that you can choose to tie your scarf with. Parisian knots are very popular amongst young men and it looks great when you team them up with leather jackets. You can choose to leave it out or tuck it in and pull the zipper up on a very cold day,” advises designer Arif Ali. Apart from the Parisian knot and the simple sling, there are a lot of knots that have been made popular by celebrities. Football player David Beckham can be seen sporting a European knot which keeps your neck snug and warm. Glee star Matthew Morrison likes to wear his scarf with a loose once-around knot which has one end of the scarf longer than the other. Men have just as many choices in wearing scarves — from formal to casual. The trick is wearing the right kind of scarf— because not all have the sex-appeal factor.

A

n ideal day for me would be when I am at peace with myself and no work around,” says Sandeep Kumar Sultania but those days are few and far in between as his schedule is always choc-a -bloc with meetings, projects and making decisions. Born and brought up in Bihar, Sandeep had big plans for himself and he pursued them right from the start. It was a childhood full of fun, as he recalls. Growing up with four brothers and three sisters and the little games that they shared is how Sandeep remembers his childhood. Sandeep studied in a convent school till the tenth and then moved to Calcutta for higher studies. There he completed his chartered accountancy, company secretary course and cost and works accountancy before joining Prudential Capital Market as a senior manager. However, he was not satisfied with being a mere finance professional. He soon packed his bags for Delhi, prepared for the civil service exams and happened to clear it in 1998, when he was allotted to the AP cadre. A proud moment needless to say, for both him and his family. Since then he has held several posts all over the state where he has left a mark with his brilliant ideas and useful projects. Now, as the managing director, APTDC, Sandeep has his priorities marked. His aim is to see that tourism services are improved, turnover increased and many more newer areas be opened up for tourism in the state. Quiz him about the challenges he faces in his job and pat comes the reply, “I face challenges every day. We belong to the government sector and are serving the social sector. Opening new projects and balancing them, is tough. The government has a larger objective to fulfil and we work towards it each day.” Surely, then with so much on his mind, family time must take a backseat? "On the contrary, my first priority is my family when I reach home. I just love spending time with my kids Vedika and Gaurang. I am not a great fan of parties and instead like to spend time at home with family,” he says. Reading and watching movies are among his other favourite pastimes. "Entertainment is a must after such a hectic day at work and what better way to relax than movies, I can watch all kinds of movies,” he says. Another passion that's evident is his love for travelling. "I travel a lot and make sure that whenever time permits I take off with the family on occasional trips," says Sandeep.

Theirs was a love cum arranged marriage. Simple, homely and a complete family man is how Reeta describes her husband. “Family time is most important for him. When I see him playing with Gaurang and Vedika, I feel he turns into a

No office at home kid himself. Never have I seen him raise his temper with us," she adds. She also admires his frankness and his understanding nature. "Even after so many years of marriage, he is still my best friend and confidante," says Reeta. After a lot of coaxing she reveals that it was Sandeep's voice and his simplicity that she found attractive, and for Sandeep it is her

smile, she says with a laugh. Reeta says unlike what people say that an IAS officer is forever busy, Sandeep has no such problems. “He so efficiently manages his work and balances his schedule that we never had this complaint that he is too busy for us. He brings none of the office tensions home. Once he is home, office is out," she says. Vedika and Gaurang are in Class VIII and Class VI respectively and are the darlings of

their father. “The professional disappears the moment he is home,” Reeta says. "Being with my father means having fun. I enjoy a lot with him. Gaurang and I love to trouble him but he never complains or scolds us," offers Vedika. Then in a hushed voice she reveals,"Dad is my best friend. In fact, there are many secrets of ours which only dad knows." Whenever Sandeep finds the time, the family takes off on vacations as the whole family shares his love for travelling and movies.

Kushal set his business up early so that it benefits him in the future. “I am smart in that respect,” says a confident Kushal who thinks that films can provide the bread and butter but you have to always have films in your hand for the same. ushal was last seen on television a while ago when he won the reality show Zor Ka Jhatka and in films like Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal and Salaam-e-Ishq even before that. Apparently Kushal will be seen in a negative role in Navdeep Singh's directorial Rock the Shaadi where Abhay Deol is playing the lead. “It’s not a negative role per se, rather it is a role parallel to Abhay’s with no definite shades to it. Yes, I play the antagonist but you can't categorise the character into a negative or a positive one,” he clarifies. Two years ago, Kushal was supposed to do a film called, Shaadi Of The Dead, with a different production house and also a different role but eventually the film got shelved. “They called me back saying a lot of things have changed since then. They decided to do the film with a lot of changes in it including the script though the subject remained the same. I thought of checking out what

they had to offer and so went to meet them. Navdeep, the director, selected me for the role and after a workshop on it he decided to cast me,” informs Kushal. Irock Productions in association with Ekta Kapoor will be producing the film. Not many people know what kept Kushal away from the glamour world for two and half years. The actor was busy setting up his business in Mumbai and Goa, “You have got to pay attention to any business in the beginning at least until you are sure that it can survive on its own. In between I did shoot for Zor Ka Jhatka but the format of the show had a definite timeline. I had to be away for 45 days so I knew my schedule, the rest of the time I was concentrating on my business,” offers Kushal going on to add, “I knew it was a risk taking a break from TV and cinema for two and a half years but I had to do it. I am passionate about both my business and acting, the business was my plan B. I love performing and to maintain the life-

goodbye to it just yet, “Television is really demanding, I literally don't get any time or space to breathe with the hectic schedule. And I was already clear that I needed some time off and do things that will not hinder my schedule and in the process affect my business,” quips the talented actor who also happens to be a choreographer. He has been a part of Shiamak Davar's dance group and was a dance teacher as well. Incidentally, Kushal became an entrepreneur around the

same time recession hit the market. “I automatically got out of television, I got some offers then but unfortunately couldn’t take them up. I see a lot of actors are now shuttling between films and television.” Kushal further adds,“Films however, are my first love. I am looking for work as well as I am taking up what comes my way,” says Kushal who has been offered another film where he plays a negative character again though for now he is not revealing much.

njuries seem to be the order of the day. Recently many of our Btown heroes complained of injuries and now joining this list is the Tanu weds Manu actor Madhavan. The actor has had a history of injuries. On the sets of the blockbuster film 3Idiots, the actor had suffered a knee injury but through proper rest and treatment, Madhavan seemed to have resolved it. Now, the actor was

shooting for a Tamil film called Vettai and unfortunately suffered an injury on the same knee again. The scene involved Madhavan shooting for a rain sequence when he slipped and fell, injuring his already hurt knee. Though the actor is currently undergoing physiotherapy, he will be heading to Australia for treatment. Chances are that the actor may even have to undergo surgery if required.

ilm-maker Satish Kaushik is delighted that Indian cinema has expanded globally and advises young filmmakers to think internationally to tap bigger audiences. “The world has become very small. I

t's not everyday that Telugu film-makers have the audacity to have a gay as an important character in their films. And Haleem

Khan's role in Nuvvila was so convincing that you would believe that he’s a gay in real life too. “I am not gay,” says Haleem emphatically and goes on to say, “Come on, you cannot mistake a person's real life personality with what you see on screen.” His confession hits you hard enough to follow it up with another question. How did he portray his character, Shailu in Nuvvila, so convincingly? “I am a trained Kuchipudi dancer and I specialise in the female impersonation. I have been travelling all over India and abroad for the past 12 years for my performances on stage,” he reveals. That defi-

nitely puts things in perspective. “Acting in Nuvvila was a piece of cake for me. I have done numerous challenging characters like impersonating Satyabhama on stage but it did take me a while to agree to do the role in Nuvvila,” he says. Apparently someone from Ravi Babu's office contacted him after hearing about his dance performances. “It wouldn't have been an issue if I was asked to play a guy’s role or even a female impersonation. But when they asked me to play a gay's role, I took more than a month to make up my mind. Ravi Babu convinced me that this would be a good break for me. I was extremely shy because it was the first time I was going to face the camera in front of 200 junior artistes in those costumes,” he says. Born and brought up in Ongole, Haleem confesses that it was indeed tough for him to convince his family and relatives about his profession. He began learning Kuchipudi when he was in his Class XII and it's been a long journey for him since then. “I hail from a conservative Muslim family and no one motivated me to take up this profession. I was always inclined towards Indian Classical music. Initially I played hide and seek with my parents about what I was doing but I am glad that they are proud of the recognition I am getting as an artist,” he says. “But then, there's still some stigma about the characters I play on stage or in films.”

Ask him about what sort of characters he would want to portray in future? “Negative characters would be great. They are really challenging and I believe I can do a good job. Dancing will always be my first love but I like acting as well. Maybe I'll do bit of both in future,” he replies. He has a thing or two to add about portrayal of gays in Telugu films. “It's just a character and if I play a gay or a female character, it doesn't mean that I'll become so in real life. I have been recognised for the role I have played in the film and all my respect goes out to the gays in our society. Homosexuality is very much part of our society and I think it would be better if people see it in the right perspective,” he signs off.

Although she made her debut in Malayalam back in 2004, she had acted in very few Malayalam films in the past seven years. The film is titled Grandmaster and the buzz is that she’s going to play a lawyer’s role in this film. In Telugu, she’ll soon be seen in a film titled Kshetram.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
