B
ritish author, literary critic and journalist Christopher Hitchens has died, aged 62, according to Vanity Fair magazine. He died from pneumonia, a complication of the oesophageal cancer he was suffering from, at a Texas hospital. Vanity Fair said there would "never be another like Christopher". He is survived by his wife, Carol Blue, and their daughter, Antonia, and his children from a previous marriage, Alexander and Sophia. Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter described the writer as someone "of ferocious intellect, who was as vibrant on the page as he was at the bar". "Those who read him felt they knew him, and those who knew him were profoundly fortunate souls."

Where rock will meet theatre The Samahaara Hyderabad Theatre & Rock Music Festival, 2011 is back with a fresh new look and fresher talent Sana Mirza sana.m@postnoon.com
T
he Samahaara Hyderabad Theatre & Rock Music Festival organised by local theatre group Samahaara is all set to showcase their raw talent with not just plays but will also be sharing stage space with some of Hyderabad’s best rock bands. The festival begins today and is spread over a week ending December 22. Vice-president of Samahaara, Anjali Koda believes that there is a direct collaboration between theatre and the various other art mediums. “Every year we add something new. Last year we included short
films. The short-film-makers got to screen their films during the festival and got maximum exposure. This year we have rock bands. Though there are quite a few bands in Hyderabad, not a lot of them get to play in front of a large audience. It’s not a lack of talent, but it is a question of reaching out to people,” she says. The Samahaara Hyderabad Theatre & Rock Music Festival, 2011, is spread over three venues – Taramati Baradari, Bharati Vidya Bhavan and Ravindra Bharthi. The opening play of the festival is a spoof of Shakespeare's Macbeth in Deccani by St Francis College for Women on December 16. The very next day

you have Dario Fo and Franca Rame's Ek Akeli Aurat in Hindi by Udaan followed by music performances by Shock Therapy and Phoenix. On the third day, we see Deepak Morris's Business is War, a play in English by Infosys' theatre group Manch followed by Mehraj and Alteregoz’s open air performance. Day four of the festival has the International School of Film and Media presenting 12 Angry Men, with Nishumbita gearing up for a Hindi play entitled Being Eunuch the next day. The festival comes to an end with Samahaara's home production, a play by Harold Pinter called Caretaker. According to Rathna
Shekhar Reddy, President of Samahaara, there are two things that are different this year: “Since SHTF is two years old, it was easier to get sponsors this year. We have been creating a lot of buzz online especially on the Facebook and the promotions have increased ten-fold this year,” he says. The promotional video titled The Entertainer's Oath has been created by Nakul Gupta from The Filmery and is available on YouTube. If you are interested in watching any of the plays or bands, tickets are available on www.bookmyshow.com and www.indianstage.in and donor passes are available in select Vodafone stores.

A FOUNTAIN THAT SPOUTS NEGLECT Aishwarya Yerra
Gulzar Houz photographed 150 years ago
W
hen one looks at Gulzar Houz one cannot help but wonder why the AP government declared this rather sad looking fountain, situated right in the middle of the road, a Heritage monument. Well, the government’s reasons to do so were steeped in the history associated with the monument. Gulzar Houz was originally called Char-Su-Ka-Houz, when it was built nearly 400 years ago. Char-Su-Ka-Houz literally means a fountain that has four roads and four kamans or gateways. In ancient times nawabi ladies would bathe in this fountain and the kamans had huge curtain's to protect their modesty. The four kamans are called Machali Kaman (towards Nayapura), Kali Kaman (towards Yaktupura), Sher Batil Kaman (towards Ghansi Bazaar) and finally the Charminar Kaman. Almost 60 years ago the foun-

tain was illuminated with lights, and adorned with flowers and waterworks and was therefore renamed Gulzar Houz. But its condition is pathetic today with the fountain covered with chips and the paint peeling off. The fountain has not been functioning for the past few years and the heart-wrenching part is that one can see garbage and plastic wrappers thrown carelessly into it. It may have been given Heritage status by the government but the state has let this wonderful piece of history rot.
Gulzar Houz is surrounded by markets. From clothes and footwear to fruit and jewellery one can find anything here. A little beyond the Charminar kaman is the Jama Masjid which is even older than the Mecca Masjid. Situated nearby is the Purana Pul which is the oldest bridge in India still in use. Hyderabad is city of history and we are truly blessed to have so much heritage. Structures like Gulzar Houz ooze history and heritage from every pore, so let us not neglect them.

rtist D Nagaiah is in a pensive mood as he delivers the lines and the strokes to his painting at a coffee shop in the city. His tryst with art began after a long period of service in the AP police department, where he began his career as a constable. “I loved art, even when I worked with the police department, so I served as a sketch artist, solving many murders during my tenure. I never was an advocate of violence in solving crimes, so back then, many times, I was able to sweet-talk people into admitting their crimes,” he says. Nagaiah is proud of the fact that his profession allowed him to deal with extremists like
Where and when... His works are currently on display at Beyond Coffee in Jubilee Hills. His works are on display from till December 21. Kashmiri militants and Naxals. His passion towards his profession is evident in the fact that he bought books on Indian law worth `1 lakh many years back, which is a treasure of sorts today.
Nagaiah is now retired, and concentrates his creative energies exclusively on art. “I have read a lot about art movements such as Impressionism, Touchism, Fauvism and Minimalism and have experimented with water, acrylic, pastels, oil and charcoal,” he says. He credits his painting career to Mohammed Yusuf, the former DSP, and to KS Vyas, the DIG, who was killed in 1993. About the art scenario today, he says, “I believe that we are taking our influences from western art, but with the history that we have, we could do a lot using our own influences.” He is currently focussed on portraying Indian gods, and their avatars, but does not restrict himself just to them.

DUnlike effect: Govt Anna war cry prods deletes censor update Centre into action NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday held a dialogue with social networking firms seeking their views on effective use of these platforms and is also working on guidelines for its own officials on how to make good use of the social media to reach out to wider population. The discussion came a few days after IT and telecom minister Kapil Sibal asked Internet firms to ensure that no defamatory and incendiary material is uploaded. Sibal's remarks sparked a huge controversy and drew flak from the Opposition, civil society as well as internet users. After the meeting, the government asserted that there was no question of censorship of Internet.
The government has called for an open dialogue with the social media companies, including Google, Facebook and Twitter, and various government departments, including the ministry of external affairs and the department of information and technology, and sought opinions on how social media and e-governance can empower individuals and citizens, Sibal said after the meeting. Asked whether there was any plan to formulate a mechanism to regulate Internet content, Sachin Pilot, minister of state for communication and IT, said, "There is no question of censorship of Internet. Whatever law has to me made are already in place. The government of India is committed to abiding by what is there according to the Constitution, which is freedom of speech and expression. We protect that with a lot of energy." Asked by when the guidelines will be finalised for the government servants on how to make use of social networking platform to reach out to a wider population, telecom secretary R Chandrashekhar said it will be out very soon. Opposition ups the ante to unplug PC NEW DELHI: The already buffeted UPA government was dealt yet another blow with the Opposition in one voice clamouring for the dismissal of home minister P Chidambaram who found himself in more trouble on Thursday following a media report imputing that he ignored conflict of interest to bail out a hotelier who was his former client when he was a practising attorney. Even as the Congress defended Chidambaram, already under legal scanner over his alleged role in 2G spectrum pricing, the Opposition, that has the government on the mat on a number of issues, pounced on it with the BJP leader Yashwant Sinha asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to "dismiss" the home minister for his "criminal offence". According to reliable sources, after the furore over the issue in Parliament, Delhi Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna revoked the home ministry decision of withdrawal of prosecution in the case. Both houses of Parliament plunged into chaos and were adjourned for the day following a report in a daily alleging that the home minister had helped the hotelier who was his client when he was a practising lawyer. Chidambaram was not in either house when the Opposition raised
NEW DELHI: The government appears all set to pass the contentious Lokpal Bill in Parliament's Winter Session, even as Anna Hazare on Thursday threatened a slew of protests, including a sit in outside Sonia Gandhi's residence and an indefinite hunger strike from December 27 if the anti-graft law is not passed. He also gave a call
for a 'jail bharo' agitation from January 1. Stating that if time was an issue, the Winter Session should be extended, Hazare said there would be an indefinite fast either in Mumbai or Delhi from December 27 if the Bill is not passed by December 22, the last day of the Winter Session. Besides, protests would be staged
outside MPs' houses, he said. The government said a special Cabinet meet is likely to approve the Bill on Sunday and it would be brought in the Lok Sabha for consideration and passage December 20. The government hinted that Parliament may be extended for a day for the purpose. A four-minister group headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee will finalise the amendments to the Bill for consideration of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who returns from Russia on Saturday. While Hazare said there would be a swagat (welcome) ceremony at the Ramlila ground if the Lokpal Bill became effective, his team said it will take a final call on the protest December 21 depending on the "shape" of the Lokpal bill. Anna's demands include bringing the CBI and the lower bureaucracy under the Lokpal besides Lokayuktas in States and a citizen's charter. Parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said: "The government needs to build a broad consensus among parties on the issue." Anna Hazare's warning came a day after the all-party meet failed to reach a consensus on the Lokpal bill that aims to tackle corruption in the country.
ROLE MODEL the issue and has not reacted to the report. The report alleged that the home ministry had earlier this year, with the approval of Chidambaram, directed the withdrawal of three FIRs against his client SP Gupta, accused of cheating and forgery. BJP MP Chandan Mitra, editor of the daily, raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha alleging that the home minister had misused his power. The home ministry, according to the report, had consulted the law ministry for a legal opinion — that the power vested in the government could be exercised in such cases in the interest of administration of justice. But the MHA said Chidambaram had no role to play in withdrawing Gupta's prosecution. IANS

Bengal’s killer liquor dens exist near police camp DIAMOND HARBOUR (WEST BENGAL): The illegal country liquor dens in West Bengal's Sangrampur which sold spurious liquor that claimed almost 150 lives were located close to a police camp, said locals. "There is a police camp nearby, a minute from the
shanties," said Sahadat Hossain, a local teacher. The liquor was sold from over a dozen shanties near Sangrampur railway station in the village with the same name of South 24 Parganas district. At least 148 people died and around 100 were still hospitalised after drinking spurious liquor in
the shanties at Sangrampur. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered a Criminal Investigation Department probe into the liquor deaths in Sangrampur, barely 50km from capital Kolkata. She said 10 people have been arrested. IANS

Russia circulates a surprise UN resolution on Syria crisis
R
ussia has circulated a UN Security Council resolution aimed at ending the crisis in Syria, in a move that surprised the Western nations. The draft condemns the violence by both Syria's government and the opposition, but does not mention sanctions. Western nations said the proposal was not tough enough but that they were prepared to work on the document. The West has been pushing the council to act on Syria for months, but Russia - and China - vetoed such proposals. In the latest violence in Syria, 27 security forces members were reportedly killed by army deserters. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the deaths occurred in the
southern province of Deraa. International journalists face severe restrictions on their movements in Syria, and it is hard to verify reports. The UN believes more than 5,000 people have died in seven months of unrest, which the government of President Bashar al-Assad A file picture of IMF chief Christine Lagard AFP
blames on armed gangs. In a recent interview with the US network ABC, he said he had given no orders for violence to be used against protesters.
Clinton hopes
Russia circulated the draft resolution among the other 14 UN Security Council
members on Thursday. Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the document urged an end to the violence, but did not mention any sanctions.“The reaction of colleagues in the Security Council was very constructive,” he said. “They made a number of comments as to the text... and we said that we were looking forward to working with them, in order to adopt a text, a resolution of the security council, which will really bring about an end to violence and crisis in Syria.” The draft demands that “all parties” in Syria stop violence. But it also includes a new reference to “disproportionate use of force by Syrian authorities”, The document also "urges the Syrian government to put an end to suppression of those exercising their rights to freedom of expression.

T
he world risks sliding into a 1930s-style slump unless countries settle their differences and work together to tackle Europe's deepening debt crisis, the head of the International Monetary Fund has warned. On a day that saw an escalation in the tit-for-tat trade battle between China and the United States and a deepening of the diplomatic rift between Britain and France, Christine Lagarde issued her strongest warning yet about the health of the global economy and said if the international community failed to co-operate the risk was of "retraction, rising protectionism, isolation". She added: “This is exactly the description of what happened in the 1930s, and what followed is not something we are looking forward to.” The IMF managing director's call came amid growing concern that 2012 will see Europe slide into a double-dip recession, with knock-on effects for the rest of the global economy.

ISLAMABAD: The US would be held responsible if Pakistan failed in the war against terror, Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said on Thursday. Khar told the Parliamentary Committee on National Security that relations with the US were ‘on hold’ and would proceed further if parliament allowed this, Geo TV reported. Bilateral relations were affected after a NATO air strike on two Pakistani army check-posts killed 24 soldiers in November. In retaliation, Pakistan closed NATO supply lines and ordered the US to vacate a key
air base in the country. The foreign minister said the war against terrorism cannot be won alone. On the US stopping $700 million in aid, Khar said Pakistan could contact other states for aid. Future relations with the US would be "clear, not confusing", she said. She said Pakistan wants cordial ties with other countries without compromising its national interests. "We will make policies keeping in view core objectives, national interests and wishes of the people," Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Khar as saying.

Before taking charge at the White House, Obama had promised the return of US troops from Iraq. He said the US left behind a “sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq"

Spurs out despite win
Spurs’ Steven Pienaar (R) scores against Shamrock Rovers during the Europa League group A AFP match at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin
A
4-0 win over Shamrock Rovers was not enough to see Tottenham through to the last 32 of the Europa League as Harry Redknapp’s European campaign ended in disappointment and anger in Dublin. Goals from Steven Pienaar, Andros Townsend, Jermain Defoe and Harry Kane gave Tottenham a comprehensive victory over the Irish part-timers, but Rubin Kazan’s 1-1 draw at PAOK Salonika meant the favourites for
Group A crashed out. The match took an ugly turn with 20 minutes to go when Redknapp reacted angrily to barracking from the Shamrock fans by appearing to aim a defiant clenched-fist gesture towards them from the edge of his technical area. Richard Brush was barely tested until Danny Rose’s miscued shot flew goal-wards and the Rovers goalkeeper backtracked to tip on to the crossbar with 25 minutes gone. The move seemed to spark
Tottenham in to life and they started to play with more confidence. Spurs needed Kazan to lose in Greece and to overturn a five-goal deficit in goal difference, and when news filtered through that the Russians were down to 10 and 1-0 down, Spurs upped the ante, taking the lead through Pienaar just before the half hour. He was given space in the box and fired into the far corner with a deflected effort from 18 yards. Brush showed good reflexes to tip Pienaar’s ambitious lob
wide before Townsend, given acres of space in the box, took a touch and curled a sweet shot into the Shamrock goal to make it 2-0. Brush came under further attack towards the end of the first half, saving well from Defoe, before the former West Ham hit-man made it 3-0. Townsend raced down the left and laid the ball off for Defoe, who spun on his heels and calmly slotted home in the final minute of the half. After the break Karl Sheppard raced on to a through ball and was hauled down by Carlo Cudicini, but the Italian’s blushes were saved when the linesman correctly judged that the striker was offside. Shamrock thought they should have had a penalty when Sheppard went down under a tackle from Younes Kaboul in the box but the referee gave nothing. With 20 minutes left, an irate Redknapp appeared to flick a defiant gesture towards the away fans who had chanted critical songs about him almost constantly throughout the match. AssouEkotto came off for Yago Falque with seven minutes left before Niko Kranjcar curled a dipping shot just over the bar. Kane got on the end of Townsend’s assist to tap home in the last minute, but it proved worthless. EVENING STANDARD
Balotelli, Richards row on training ground
M
ario Balotelli’s remarkable penchant for embroiling himself in controversy at Manchester City has resurfaced in the form of a training-ground confrontation with his team-mate Micah Richards, reported The Guardian. The two players clashed towards the end of a practice match when Richards accused Balotelli, who was on the same team, of not running hard enough. Witnesses reported that words were
exchanged before the two players squared up. Richards, in particular, seemed aggrieved by what had been said and the defender had to be restrained by James Milner and Yaya Touré as he sought to prolong the argument. City’s manager, Roberto Mancini, also got involved to keep them apart. The incident has been described as minor behind the scenes, where it has been stressed that it was quickly forgotten once the players had
returned to the dressing room. They are understood to have shaken hands and Richards responded to the Guardian breaking the story by posting a message on his Twitter site
describing them as “all good”. Richards added: “These things happen in training & we shook hands after. It shows passion!” It will, however, be added to the increasingly lengthy list of misdemeanours involving Balotelli at a time when Mancini openly admits being exasperated about the striker’s apparent inability to conform. It is also far from ideal when it comes to City’s preparations for Sunday’s game at home against Arsenal. ES

The agreement, which was reached on Thursday following recent discussions between Everton, LA Galaxy and Major League Soccer, is pending paperwork that needs to be finalised. Once that is completed, Donovan will join Everton over the Christmas period and would be eligible to face Bolton on January 4. The loan deal would last until after the derby against Liverpool on February 25.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION LOOMS OVER REDKNAPP
H
arry Redknapp risks disciplinary action from Uefa after making an angry gesture towards opposing fans as Tottenham Hotspur exited the Europa League. Redknapp was the target of taunting from a section of Shamrock Rovers supporters throughout his team’s 4-0 win in Dublin. The chants centred on the manager’s trial next month on charges of cheating the public revenue and Redknapp was so riled that midway through the second half he responded with what appeared to be an ‘up-yours’ gesture.
CELTIC EUROPA RUN ENDS
C
eltic crashed out of the Europa League despite a valiant effort as they recorded a 1-1 draw against Udinese in their final Group I game at the Stadio Friuli. The visitors, needing victory to go through into the knockout stages, took the lead in the 29th minute when Gary Hooper took advantage of a mix-up in the Udinese defence to tap in from a yard out. But veteran striker Antonio Di Natale notched from close range himself with seconds remaining in the first half after Celtic defender Cha Du-ri inadvertently headed into his path.
AVB SAYS LAMPARD WON’T GET SPECIAL TREATMENT Andre Villas-Boas today warned Frank Lampard he won’t get special treatment, even though he is one of the most celebrated players in Chelsea’s history. The midfielder scored the winner against Manchester City on Monday after coming on and then complained he hadn’t been told why he was left out of the starting XI for that match and the previous game, against Valencia. But Chelsea’s coach insists Lampard can’t take a place in the team for granted.

WIZARDS IN OZ Sachin Tendulkar plays a shot on the second day of the cricket match against Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI at Manuka Oval in AFP Canberra on Friday
SHOCK RECALL TO TEST TEAM FOR SIMON KATICH LIKELY SYDNEY: Opener Simon Katich could be in line for a shock recall to Australia’s Test team, reports said Friday, just weeks after being disciplined for outspoken comments about captain Michael Clarke. The 36-year-old was reprimanded by a Cricket Australia hearing this month after he accused Clarke of playing a part in his axing from the Australian team, despite averaging 45 runs in his 56 Tests. Katich was controversially dropped from Cricket Australia’s contract list in June and he said at the time he doubted he would play for his country again as long as Clarke was skipper. But Channel Nine said Clarke was now behind a push to reinstate Katich as the team looks to address their batting woes.
‘Mankading’ at India’s first series in Australia
I
ndia’s first ever tour of Australia was in 1947. Apart from being the inaugural tour, it was also special that the team represented the newly independent India. India was captained by Lala Amarnath while Australia was skippered by the legendary Don Bradman. For India, the series was a nigh wash-out losing four tests and drawing one, but there were several instances of individual brilliance from both sides with Bradman topping the lot. The second test in this series became infamous for ‘’Mankading’’: Vinoo Mankad ran out Australian batsman Bill Brown for backing up too far, despite being warned in the first test. The Oz press railed against Mankad calling the act unsportsmanlike.
India reply in kind CANBERRA: India’s first two-day match against the CA Chairman’s XI at the Manuka Oval on Friday ended in a draw. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman chose to retire hurt after tea as India responded strongly on the second day. Tendulkar was on 92 and VVS Laxman on 57, with India still trailing Chairman’s XI’s first-innings total of 398/6 declared by 158 runs. Indians declared at 320 for six with Rohit Sharma and WP Saha at the crease. Earlier, opener Ajinkya Rahane fell to Jake Haberfield for just three, Later, Gautam Gambhir was dismissed by Glenn Maxwell for a 63-ball 35. Gambhir hit six boundaries, while stand-in skipper Rahul Dravid fell soon after lunch, caught by Peter George at mid-on off the bowling of Cameron Boyce. He scored an elegant 45. However, Tendulkar stayed put and steadied the innings with a 133-run partnership with Laxman. Virat Kohli scored just one run before being caught and bowled by CJ Boyce. Rohit Sharma is continuing the Indian fightback along with WP Saha. Sharma is on 56 off 80 balls hitting eight fours and a six. Saha is on 23. Earlier on Thursday, Tom Cooper and
Wes Robinson scored centuries and shared a 226-run partnership to lift the CA Chairman XI to 398 for six declared on a docile pitch after Dravid won the toss and elected to field. Cooper’s unbeaten 182 contained 24 boundaries and three sixes, while Robinson’s 143 featured six big sixes — including five off test hopeful Pragyan Ojha. ISHANT IS OKAY, ASSURE TEAM OFFICIALS CANBERRA: The Indian team management quelled concerns over Ishant Sharma’s fitness after the pacer walked off bowling just 5.3 overs on the opening day of their first practice match against Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI on Thursday. Sharma sent scare through the Indian camp when he left the field without completing his sixth over about half an hour before lunch at the Manuka Oval. Team officials, however, insisted that Sharma merely needed to remove some strapping from his ankle that had loosened and become uncomfortable. They further added that since Sharma was slated to bowl only six overs in this match, there was little point strapping him up again for the remaining three balls.
OZ’S INJURY WOES WORSEN WITH WARNER JOINING LIST MELBOURNE: Australia’s injury woes worsened with explosive batsman David Warner complaining of stiffness in his back. Warner now joins Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh on the list of the injured. Also worrying Australia are the injuries of fast bowlers James Pattinson and Peter Siddle. Their injuries are minor and are expected to be fit for the first test against India on December 26. Warner had scored his maiden Test century against New Zealand.

Replaced hip gets a boost via walking skills training Physical therapy helps to improve walking endurance as well as ability to perform strenuous tasks like climbing stairs
R
esearchers in Norway report that patients who receive walking skills training following total hip arthroplasty for osteoarthritis show improved physical function. The program, which continued 12 months following hip replacement surgery, brought a positive effect on the capability to walk and climb stairs. Results of the study appear in Arthritis Care & Research. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease where loss of cartilage in affected joints such as the knees, hips, fingers or spine causes pain and stiffness that can be disabling. In some cases, the only treatment option for OA is total replacement of the joint, known as arthroplasty. The World Health Organization estimates that 10 per cent of men and 18 per cent of women of 60 years and above suffer from OA. In the US, the National Hospital Discharge Survey reported that 230,000 Americans had hip replacement surgery in 2007. Previous research reported pain relief, a return to daily functioning, and maintaining an active lifestyle to be high priorities for hip replacement patients. Yet, despite improve-
ments in pain and mobility following surgery, studies have shown patients with hip replacements had more walking impairment compared to healthy peers, and displayed poorer hip flexibility and muscle strength. “Physical therapy, particularly exercises that increase strength and improve walking, is a major component of patient rehabilitation,” said Kristi Elisabeth Heiberg, a PhD candidate at the Oslo University and lead author of the current study.
To investigate the effects of a walking skills training program on walking, stair-climbing, balance, physical function, and pain, the research team recruited participants undergoing total hip arthroplasty at two hospitals in the Oslo area. Patients were enrolled consecutively from October 2008 through March 2010, with 68 patients randomised to either a training group (35) or in the control group (33). Participants had a mean age of 66 years, with 35 women and 33 men tak-
ing part in the study. Participants in the training group engaged in 12 sessions that were led by a physical therapist twice a week. Each 70minute session was solely performed in weight-bearing positions and included activities such as sitting to standing, walking over obstacles, walking with turns, and climbing stairs. The aim of the training program was to improve patients’ flexibility, strength, coordination, balance, and walking endurance following surgery. Results show those who took part in the walking program displayed significant improvement in physical performance measures and self-reported physical functioning at five months following surgery compared to the control group. Compared to baseline measures (three months post surgery), 66 per cent of subjects in the training group and 15 per cent in the control group improved their walking distance to 50 metres or more by the fifth month. At 12 months post surgery the training group showed greater improvement than the control. “The training program was well tolerated by patients and no complications were reports,” concludes Ms Heiberg.

“I
seem to be going through a very tough phase with my 2-year-old son. He was quite normal till he was one-anda-half years old but has become exactly opposite of what he used to be. “He wants his way all the time and if he does not get what he wants, he starts crying loudly and sometimes even bangs his head on the wall. “My husband and I differ totally in our parenting methods. I feel it’s alright for a child to cry sometimes and my husband thinks just the opposite. So we end up fighting and at the end of the day all three of us are miserable. “I know all this is part of growing up and ‘terrible twos’ and all that, but I need help. Between father and son I think I am going crazy and becoming a nervous wreck.” Please stay calm. This is a very common story in many a household. Firstly, you need to address the issue of your varied parenting styles. You have to discuss this in your kid’s absence and come to a an understanding. Crying does not harm the child as much as the divergence in parenting styles. It is more important that you both agree with each other, at least in front of your child and deal with your differences later. If you don’t do this, the child receive confusing inputs. Never hit your child. It will only make matters worse. Remember, anger towards children should always be only simulated and not real. New method to cool computer chips
System for enhancing thermal conductivity could cool lasers and other devices too — more efficiently
T
he surprising discovery of a new way to tune and enhance thermal conductivity — a basic property generally considered to be fixed for a given material — gives engineers a new tool for managing thermal effects in smart phones and computers, lasers and a number of other powered devices. The finding was made by a group of engineers headed by Deyu Li, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University, and published online in the journal Nature Nanotechnology. Li and his collaborators discovered that the thermal conductivity of a pair of thin strips of material called boron nano-ribbons can be enhanced by up to 45 per cent depending on the process that they used to stick the two ribbons together. Although the research was conducted with boron nano-ribbons, the results are applicable to other thin film materials. An entirely new way to control thermal effects “This points at an entirely new way to control thermal effects that is likely to have a significant impact in microelectronics on the design of smart phones and computers, in optoelectronics on the design of lasers and LEDs, and in a number of other fields,” said Greg Walker, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt and an expert in thermal transport who was not directly involved in the research. According to Li, the force that holds the two nano-ribbons together is a weak electrostatic attraction called the van der Waals force. “Traditionally, it is widely believed that the phonons that carry heat are scattered at van der Waals interfaces, which makes the ribbon bundles’ thermal conductivity the same as that of each ribbon. What we discovered is in sharp contrast to this classical view. We show that phonons can cross these interfaces without

T being scattered, which significantly enhances the thermal conductivity,” said Li. In addition, the researchers found that they could control the thermal conductivity between a high and a low value by treating the interface of the nano-ribbon pairs with different solutions.
The enhancement is reversible One of the remarkable aspects of the effect Li discovered is that it is reversible. For example, when the researchers wetted the interface of a pair of nano-ribbons with isopropyl alcohol, pressed them together and let them dry, the thermal conductivity was the same as that of a single nano-ribbon. However, when they wetted them with pure alcohol and let them dry, the thermal conductivity was enhanced. Then, when they wetted them with isopropyl alcohol again, the thermal conductivity dropped back to the original low value. “It is very difficult to tune a fundamental materials property such as thermal conductivity and the demonstrated tuneable thermal conductivity makes the research especially interesting,” Walker said. One of the first areas where this new knowledge is likely to be applied is in thermal management of microelectronic devices like computer chips. Today, billions to trillions of transistors are jammed into chips the size of a fingernail. These chips generate so much heat that one of the major factors in their design is to prevent overheating. In fact, heat management is one of the major reasons behind today’s multi-core processor designs. “A better understanding of thermal transport across interfaces is the key to achieving better thermal management of microelectronic devices,” Li said.
Design of nano-composites Another area where the finding will be important is in the design of ‘nano-composites’ — materials made by embedding nanostructure additives such as carbon nano-tubes to a host material such as various polymers — that are being developed for use in flexible electronic devices, structural materials for aerospace vehicles and a variety of other applications.

he ability to trust, love, and resolve conflict with loved ones starts in childhood — way earlier than you may think. That is one message of a new review of the literature in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. “Your interpersonal experiences with your mother during the first 12 to 18 months of life predict your behaviour in romantic relationships 20 years later,” says psychologist Jeffry Simpson, the author, with University of Minnesota colleagues W Andrew Collins and Jessica E Salvatore. “Before you can remember, before you have language to describe it, and in ways you aren’t aware of, implicit attitudes get encoded into the mind,” about how you’ll be treated or how worthy you are of love and affection. While those attitudes can change with new relationships, introspection, and therapy, in times of stress old patterns often reassert themselves. The mistreated infant becomes the defensive arguer; the baby whose mom was attentive and supportive works through problems, secure in the goodwill of the other person. This is an ‘organisational’ view
The good news
“I
f you can figure out what those old models are and verbalise them,” and if you get involved with a committed, trustworthy partner, says Simpson, “you may be able to revise your models and calibrate your behaviour differently.” Old patterns can be overcome. A betrayed baby can become loyal. An unloved infant can learn to love. of human social development. Explains Simpson, “People find a coherent, adaptive way, as best as they can, to respond to their current environments based on what’s happened to them in the past.” What happens to you as a baby affects the adult you become: It’s not such a new idea for psychology — but solid evidence for it has been lacking. Simpson, Collins, and Salvatore have been providing that evidence; investigating the links between mother-infant relationships and later love partnerships. Their subjects are 75 children of lowincome mothers whom they have been assessing from birth into their early 30s, including their close friends and romantic partners.

MODEL WATCH
Tell us something interesting about you. I am a Gemini who is 6 feet 2 inches tall. The team I support is Chelsea. I am a cat person and I have a Persian cat who I love to bits and his name is Rocco. How many years have you walked the earth? Well, walking for me really started when I started modelling so I would say about nine years of walking and walking in style. Your first stint with the camera? My first shoot was at a resort. It was a great experience and it was shot outdoors in the pool, on the lawns and there was also a studio set-up. So I got a taste of everything there. What will you not leave home without? A fashionable pair of sunglasses. I love my dark glasses. Your wardrobe essentials are... Fitted jeans, basic polos, a black formal suit, a white shirt and shoes, which include formal, casual and running. Sexiest item in a man’s wardrobe is... His boxers! I practically live in them when I am at home. They are the most comfortable. Who is your favourite model and why? Arjun Rampal because he has the right looks and also he handled his career very well that’s why he is so successful. It’s not easy what he has done. Being a male model, he has achieved a lot. Projects that people can spot you in...
WALKING IN
CANDID THREE
STYLE United Colours of Benetton, Max, Kingfisher etc. Also, most of the fashion weeks and good shows around. What’s your sexiest asset? Right now it’s my 3D television and my Harman/Kardon speakers or should I have said my looks like most of them?
If not modelling then what would you have been doing? I would surely have been playing some sport as a professional. I did grow up playing a lot of sports in boarding school and was very attached to them. Challenges faced in the modelling industry...
There are a lot of challenges. You have to maintain yourself always and be well-groomed. Then there is fitness, the unending competition and the subsequent rivalry. New looks every season, that’s what the clients want and we have to deliver to keep off the monotony. Taniya Talukdar
What inspired you to become a model? To be honest, a lot my friends were models and they always asked, “why don’t you come and model too, its fun,” I was never too keen but then I met the master himself — Prasad Bidapa. He is so good! And then there was no looking back. Advice to upcoming models... Be true to the assignment you are doing, be punctual and be patient because this industry does test your patience and most of all accept rejections. One can’t get all the campaigns and walk all the shows in the country. You should respect the client’s decision when you get rejected. It’s not that you are not good; it’s because they have a certain look in mind. Your movie aspirations... To be honest, I am not too keen or interested in doing movies. I love watching them and I enjoy the fact that I am a fashion model so I know by now that I don’t fit into that space. But if they make something out of the box and I am offered, why not?

The glamour behind the glitz
A Rockstar audience will not watch Lanka Debutant director Maqbool Khan’s recently released Lanka might have not been able to stir the required response at the box-office but that will not deter him Taniya Talukdar taniya.t@postnoon.com
D
irector Anubhav Sinha had tweeted, “Just saw #LANKA. @bajpayeemanoj is unbelievably awesome. MUST WATCH. @Maqbool_khan a fantastic Director arrives,” after watching Lanka, which was directed by his assistant of 10 years, Maqbool Khan. Apart from this, Anubhav had also gone ahead and thrown a bash for his friend after the release of the film but somehow the film did not garner the success it deserved. “The film was not promoted well. The marketing plan wasn’t up to the mark,” informs Maqbool, going on to add, “As a director, it wasn’t my call, rather the production house should have come up with a marketing strategy for the film and I did not get a chance to interfere. But I guess such things happen.” Prod the director a little more and he says,
“A lot of things came to my mind. This being my first release, I wanted things to work out better but just at the time of the release, the producer, Vikram Bhatt, was busy in Jodhpur shooting for his upcoming film.” The buzz is that Vikram was and is still busy shooting for Dangerous Ishq, which is a comeback vehicle for Karisma Kapoor. Even if Maqbool is miffed with Vikram, he isn’t showing it, rather he is happy and concentrating on the fact that people who have seen his film are liking and appreciating it. “People who have watched it have liked it, though not many people will know about it to come and watch it in theatres. I have received positive responses from a lot of wellknown journalists, though some did rip it apart. But then you can’t always make everyone happy,” offers Maqbool going on to add, “The film has got some great performances and I am happy that I have
made a good film.” Lanka is definitely not a film for the masses, “A few people have told me, ‘The film is good but it lacks entertainment.’ Well, a Rockstar audience is definitely not going to watch my film. The film deals with a dark subject and knowingly I have kept the entertainment factor away. I have made the film for a niche audience so I can’t expect everyone to like it,” shares Maqbool. Lanka is inspired from a true story and has Manoj Bajpai playing the protagonist, “Manoj plays the most powerful guy in a hamlet of UP where he gets into a physical relation with a much younger girl. Though people there know about it, they are not able to do anything. Arjan Bajwa, who plays his brother in the film causes his downfall,” explains the director. Lanka is a more or less modernday adaptation of the Ramayan, “Nobody ever dealt with the subject of Raavan and Vibhishan’s relation-
ship and I found it quite interesting to explore,” quips Maqbool. The fact that the film doesn’t boast of any well known stars might be another reason for it losing out at the box-office, “I know my film doesn’t have any stars and that was the way I wanted it. The role was written keeping Manoj in mind. We wanted an actor who had that kind of intensity in his eyes. We were pretty much convinced that no one else could do the role. And we also knew that though Manoj has his set of fan following, he was no superstar to draw the crowd to a theatre,” says Maqbool. The director who had made a film earlier for his friend, Anubhav Sinha’s production house, called Kabootar, is now going to be extra cautious of the production house he makes his next film with. “The production house should be strong enough to publicise the film well,” he advises before signing off.

Paramount announces new logo Eastwood and
T
o celebrate its 100th anniversary, Paramount Pictures announced that starting with Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, the studio will unveil its newest logo. It’s a lush, photorealistic variation of the classic mountain peak that has made up the studio’s logo since it was conceived in 1916. The first logo was created in 1916, and already, the basics have been laid down: A single mountain peak; ‘Paramoun’ in a script-y typeface, with the ‘P’ especially swirly; and everything framed by a semi-circle of five-pointed stars. Curiously, though, there are 24 stars in the previous logo, the current version has 22.
family to be part of reality series I
n yet another sign that the downfall of Western civilisation is nigh, Oscar-winning filmmaker/actor Clint Eastwood’s family will be the subject of a new E! reality series, though the man himself will — thankfully — only be making a couple of cameo appearances. But still...what? The news was broken by TMZ, which learned that Eastwood’s
Madonna signs record deal M adonna has reportedly signed a new record deal with Interscope. The entertainer has put pen to paper on a threealbum agreement with the label, the New York Post claims. “It’s just about keeping relevance so that she can tour. She is still in the demo phase, but the idea is to get the first album out early next year,” an industry source told the publication. Madonna signed a 10-year multirights deal worth $100 million (£65 million) with events company Live Nation in 2007 which covers touring and merchandise, and it is believed that this agreement will continue alongside the Interscope contract.
wife Dina and two of his daughters — Morgan, 15, and Francesca, 18 — are currently shooting a new reality series being produced by Bunim/Murray, the company behind such legendary television classics as Keeping up with the Kardashians and Bad Girls Club. The show will explore the idea of what it’s like to live in a family of “Hollywood royalty”.

Douglas to get Monte Cristo award T wo-time Academy Award winner Michael Douglas has been tapped to receive the Eugene O’Neill Theater Centre’s 12th annual Monte Cristo award in recognition of his achievements and contributions to the theatre community, both internationally
and in the US. His wife Catherine Zeta-Jones will present the honour at a gala dinner set for April 16, 2012 at New York City’s Edison Ballroom. Douglas began at the O’Neill Theatre, spending three summers from1966–68 and serving on the board of trustees since
1980. “My time at the O’Neill is one of the greatest influences on my life and career. For an artist, it is a place unique in the world. I am delighted to accept this award from an organisation, which has helped shape American theatre,” Douglas said.
Demi Moore not letting go of twitter name
T
he 49-year-old actress — who announced last month she was divorcing Ashton Kutcher, her husband of six years — has hit out at her fans on the social networking website who have been demanding she changes the moniker, but she does not see it as a ‘top priority’ in her life. In a rare tweet since announcing her marriage split, she wrote: “Changing my twitter name isn’t a top priority right now. sorry it bothers so many of u. should I not tweet until I do? does it really matter? (sic)” Despite being a prolific user of twitter during her relationship with Ashton, Demi — who has more than 4.3 million followers on the micro-blogging website — has posted messages just three times since November 26.
How Clooney got his dog to like him
G
eorge Clooney has been known to go to great lengths for a prank. Turns out he’ll do the same for a dog. The actor, now starring in The Descendants, tells Esquire magazine that he first saw his new dog Einstein, a rescued ‘part cock-
er spaniel or something’, on the Internet. He immediately called the shelter and asked to adopt the dog. The shelter officials said it was up to the dog to like Clooney. “I start to panic that Einstein is not going to like me,” Clooney says. “So I run into the kitchen, where I have these turkey
meatballs, and I rub them all over my shoes... Who knew Einstein was such a food whore on top of everything? He throws himself at my feet.” Einstein instantly had a new home, “and forever, now, he just thinks of me as the guy with the meatball feet. I can do no wrong. He follows me everywhere.”

The great juggling act It’s the season of bilingual and dubbed films in two of the biggest regional film industries in the country. Telugu and Tamil actors are looking to expand their market across borders. D
ubbed films have become an integral part of Telugu cinema and there’s no denying that stars like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Suriya, Vikram and Karthi have a considerable market in Andhra Pradesh. Apart from the actors, films made by directors like Shankar, Mani Ratnam, Gautham Menon and Selvaraghavan have had a great run at the box-office for a long time. Now, there’s a new trend emerging in both Telugu and Tamil film industries, which might turn out to be a win-win situation for everyone. Bilingual films are in vogue and so is the trend of dubbing Telugu films in Tamil and Malayalam. In 2012, films like The Businessman, Eega, Endhukante Premanta, Uu Kodathara Ulikki Padathara, the untitled Gautham Menon-Nani’s film, Love Failure and several other films will be simultaneously released in Telugu and Tamil. “It’s about time people from the Telugu and Tamil film industries collaborate with each other to expand both our markets,” says Venkat Prabhu, who recently directed the smash hit Mankatha starring Ajith and Trisha. He’s currently writing the script for his next film, which reportedly has Suriya and Ravi Teja in lead roles. “Casting Telugu actors in Tamil films (and vice versa), makes more sense when one makes a bilingual film. Even if a Tamil film is dubbed in Telugu, it helps when you have a known face in the film to reach out to a wider audience both in India and abroad,” he says adding, “Bollywood has a huge market for their films and they recover the investment within two weeks. If Telugu and Tamil film industries stick together, we can definitely compete with the record margins generated by Hindi films.” Dhananjayan Govind, chief of
Top 5 dubbed films to watch out for n Veedinthe n Shakuni n 3 Rascals n Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiyaan n Suriya’s Maatran UTV’s South Film business is upbeat about the production house’s upcoming bilingual film Thaandavam, which stars Vikram, Jagapathi Babu, Anushka and Amy Jackson in lead roles. “We cannot imagine South films collecting Rs50–150 crores at the box office a decade ago, which now has become a reality. Along with that, the market for bilingual and dubbed market has also grown. In our film, the characters required smart looking and possibly Tamil speaking actors, who can also connect with the Telugu audience and hence we have chosen our heroes from Telugu market also,” he says justifying the casting of Telugu actors in Tamil films. Rana Daggubati is another Telugu actor who’s all set to make his debut in Tamil in Vetri Maaran’s upcoming film Vada Chennai. Earlier this year, Sharwanand had acted in M Saravanan’s Engeyum Eppodhum, which went on to become a huge hit and recently Allari Naresh was seen in Samuthirakani’s Poraali. Both these films have been dubbed in Telugu as Journey and Sangarshana. Nani is currently part of SS Rajamouli’s Eega and Gautham Menon’s upcoming film, both of which are among the most eagerly awaited films of 2012. “Shooting every scene twice to cater to both Telugu and Tamil audience is turning out to be a nightmare,” Rajamouli said in a lighter vein to explain the effort involved in making a bilingual film. Mahesh Babu is a popular actor in Tamil Nadu and his recent film Dookudu got a huge opening in Chennai. The buzz is that he’s going to dub for himself for the Tamil version of his next film The Businessman, which is going to release on January11. Trade pundits are viewing this latest trend of bilingual films as a good move for both the film industries. How the success or failure of these films will have an impact on the expansion of market in the near future remains to be seen.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
