Drink drive catch goes up from

6 to 347

City Police Commissioner AK Khan says the special drive will have an impact on madness on roads at weekend nights. “Till November 4 this year only six people were produced before court. This is because the traffic police used to book the drunken drivers under Section 184 (b) MV Act and fine amount was collected on the spot. However, now we started booking the drunken drivers under Section 185 (a) MV Act and they will be produced in the Court of Law along with the charge sheet on the next working day of the Court for prosecution,” he said.

Earlier, whenever we caught youngsters during routine checking they used to call their parents who in turn called influential people to bail their ward. But recently we set an example by booking our own men and proved all are equal before law. And since then we are not letting anyone go scot-free. CV Anand, Addl Commissioner (Traffic)

n About 347 people have been produced before court. n Two BMWs, one Skoda Laura, two Honda Citys, Toyota Corolla are a few high end cars. n Mid range cars displayed by traffic police were: Santro, Wagon R and Swift. n Several car owners fearing media didn’t come to the Traffic building to collect their seized cars, but cleverly sent their drivers to get them.

Poor acoustics play spoilsport HYDERABAD: One may have felt a sense of pride when Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy announced the government will provide a 10-acre permanent venue for the International Children's Film Festival for its 18th edition in 2013. However, the facilities at venues of the current edition of the festival, the biggest of its kind in the world, is far from satisfactory. As you settle in and try to relish a good movie at the main venue of 17th International Children's Film Festival at Shilparamam an irritating buzz distracts you. The theatres that have been put together are not soundproof and the drone of the film projector that forces its way into the ears of the audience reminds one of the sounds from grainy footages by amateur filmmakers. The sub-standard infrastructure is an insult to the professionals who have put in the effort to ensure quality in all aspects of their films and embarrassment to the host city, many who watched movies in the 'disturbed' environment complained. Adding insult to injury was the general lack of coordination and organisational efficiency that became clear on the opening day itself. Unscheduled cancellation of screenings, failure to adhere to timings and lack of communication or information about the unannounced changes left people fuming. Worsthit were child delegates who were literally made to feel “helpless like a child” by the arrangements that went awry. The hardbacks — ordinary chairs that are being used in the makeshift theatres — pale in comparison to the comfortable

ajan Khosa’s Gattu, woven around the life of an orphan boy and his dream of winning the kite flying competition despite the crushing burden of poverty, opened the 17th International Children’s Film Festival of India in the City on Tuesday. The week-long festival will showcase 152 films from 40 countries, a commendable increase from the 70 films in the previous edition. The festival will screen 86 critically acclaimed and awardwining films that have been made in that last 10 years. Six Chinese films will be the main focus in this year's festival. The Lost Thing, which won the Academy Award in 2011 for the best animated short film is one among the main attractions. Among the Indian films that are in the fray are Stanley Ka Dabba, I am Kalam, Chillar Party, Dekh Indian Circus. For Hyderabadis, the world premier of The Lotus Pond, made by city filmmakers, is of top interest.

seats at a major multiplex in the City that served as the main venue during the 2009 festival. Organised by the Andhra Pradesh government and Children's Film Society India with a budget of Rs5 crore and attended by international delegates, the shortcomings leave little doubt about the need for the organisers to buck up and ensure a good show.

Speaker holds mock Assembly with students U Srinivas

midst tension of MLAs resignations, Speaker Nadendla Manohar took time off to spend with the students of Government Zilla Parishad high schools from Medak and RR district yesterday. He organised a programme at the old Assembly building in the Assembly premises — Debate Youth and legislature .

A mock Assembly was conducted in front of the Speaker and Chairman of the Legislative council Chakrapani for about two hours. Talking to Postnoon,

the Speaker said that there are extraordinary talents among the students and if some confidence is instilled they will forge ahead and shine. “The talk by the students reflected some of our mistakes and we to some extent have failed creating awareness among the students,” he opined. This program will be extended to all the school across the State he said. "We did not expect so much of interaction from

these students," he said. When asked about the resignations, Speaker said, "Just wait and see things are happening and I am acting on case by case and on individual basis. I cannot answer just like that and give a wrong picture." N Radha Jayalaxmi from Narsingi School said all these years students learnt about the power of the legislature in books, but now they know what it is for

real. This kind of real time experience in a government school is very rare and they would come to Assembly to watch it live during the Winter Session, she said. Nirosha from Papannapet said that she asked about the suicides for Telangana and also the girl child being neglected, apart from the dowry deaths. She is happy that the Speaker promised to take up the issue at the earliest possible.

Big catch in city’s posh areas What the law says T S D Sree Charan

ollywood upcoming star Nikhil Siddharth may be the glamorous face among the drink drivers but there are many others belonging to the ‘movers and shakers’ of society. What surprises the police is the fact that though the intensive drive began last week, the number of posh cars caught this week-end (Nov 12-13) happened to be more. Precisely, six against 1. Of the six high-end cars, two were BMWs, one Skoda, one Toyota Corolla, and two Honda City. The haul too has gone up — from 156 last week-end to 168 this weekend. Most offenders were caught in the city’s prime areas such as Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Panjagutta, Begumpet, Mehdipatnam and other party hubs. These are also the places where the police keep a vigil for their prize catch. If you thought only the quarry caught are on hotspot, you are mistaken for once. It’s the top traffic cop who finds himself in an unenviable situation when the bigwigs’ progenies or relations are caught for drunk driving. The Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) CV Anand is too humble (or shrewd) to admit it, but police officers do get calls from the

COVER STORY ‘hot-phones’ when someone from the influential section gets caught. Anand says his men are not showing any leniency and points out the incident when he himself was booked for a ‘wrong parking.’ “We are not succumbing to the pressure. Everybody is equal before law and will be treated alike. In fact, the magistrate holds students in court all day to counsel them,” insists the commissioner. Actor Nikhil Siddharth, who had a jolt of his lifetime when he was caught by the police a few days ago admits his guilt and has agreed to spearhead the anti-drink

ection 185 (a) of MV Act — “Whoever drives or attempts to drive a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and if the BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) level exceeds 30 mg/ 100 ml of blood when checked by a Breath Analyser, shall be punishable for the first offence with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to Rs 2,000, or with both. For a second or subsequent offence if committed within three years of the commission of previous similar offence, the punishment of imprisonment which may extend to two years, or the fine which may extend to Rs 3,000, or with both.”

drive move. The young hero grins as he tells the media that he had got a more publicity thanks to this incident than he’d got in tinsel town. At the press meeting held by CV Anand, Nikhil said, “A big Hi to the media. You gave me wide publicity on Sunday. I am a teetotaller, but on Saturday I consumed two small pegs of champagne at a party organised to mark the release of my new film. I repent it and I would have hired a cab. I will ask my friends and others not to drive after consuming alcohol as they not only endanger their lives but also that of others.” In the meantime, the police have cancelled Nikhil’s license for a year and have made an example out of this high profile case, for the general public to keep in mind. If the police are strict, the scene at the court is stricter. The magistrate dealing with the cases is tough and reprimands the ‘bright or rich kids’ who stand meekly in the dock. “If it happens for the second time you could be behind the bars for three years,” she warns them. Officials believe the existing fine of Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,500 for four wheelers and two wheeler drivers should be increased so that offenders feel the pinch.

Highly specific to alcohol, unaffected by other possible breath contaminants Electrochemical/Fuel cell sensors Compact gas circuit and advanced analysis process Built in printer 2.8 inch LCD touch screen Able to store 4000 test results/Memory capacity Rechargeable Lithium — ion cell, able to work for 20 hours The machine costs around Rs 60,000 and it should be calibrated for every one year. It can store up to 4000 test results, after which the data can be transferred into a

personal computer and the machine should be formatted.

Usage: The software Panther I detects breath sample after 20 seconds of blowing and the screen will display the alcohol content if any. The alcohol content is measured in Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) and the reading should not exceed 30 mg/100 ml of blood. After the reading the policemen has to enter vehicle number, license number, subject name, location, police ID, department name. Later if the user press OK a print comes out of the machine as a challan.

Vacant posts and infrastructural inadequacies are a concern 6.1 Introduction The AP SCF is child-centric but also gives equal importance to the interactions of the child with the world around her including the community, the social institutions, the TLMs and learning resources as well as the natural environment. Thus, AP SCF takes the stand that learning should take place through natural experiences and autonomous exploration by the child, which go a long way in building her knowledge. These interactions will make the child’s learning meaningful in the general social scenario. There are several problems in making the different components involved in the education of children work together in harmony but unless that happens, the project of quality education for all may remain a dream. We need to make changes towards a resolution of various problems which characterise the system. These need to be related to changes in the curriculum, in attitudes and preparation of the teachers, in the system of evaluation, in the support structures for teachers and others engaged in educational efforts, as well as in the nature of relationship between the community and the educational institutions. It is only through enhancing the quality of interactions between various agencies and stakeholders that education can be made interactive and meaningful.

6.2 The Question of Standards The aims of education cannot be adequately met in the current system, because of certain inflexibilities and inadequacies which prevent meaningful interactions from taking place. The system presently faces many challenges. These include unfilled teaching posts, the lack of drinking water and toilet facilities in schools and other infrastructural inadequacies. Most schools are far from being disabled friendly. For example, in most there may not be any Braille facility or a language Signer. Other concerns include the inability of the system to encourage students and teachers to participate in knowledge construction, to provide educa-

tion to each child as per his / her need and to bring about the overall development of the children. The Constitutional aims of providing each child quality education with equity and justice are not being met. Knowledge which the children gain in school is seldom connected to their own lives and is based on a method of memorising from the textbook. Also missing is the dialogue with teachers and others around them which can help them in making sense of their learning

in the context of the world they observe around them, which is the very aim of the educational endeavour as the current document sees it. Other concerns which need to be addressed through reforms include the declining rate of enrolment in Government schools, indicating a loss of trust on the part of major stakeholders such as parents and the community. Also, the use of same curricula and textbooks for all children results in some children being

favoured over others. Children from marginalised backgrounds have different needs, which are not addressed through the curriculum. There is a wide gap between the contents of the curriculum and the local context of the lives of the pupils. These issues related to equity need to be addressed. Added to these are issues of health and malnutrition, which pose impediments in the educational process. Teachers’ ideas of teaching, which are often

Expert’s suggestion Make maths a choice, not a terror: Syllabus suffers from too much, not too little. Especially the syllabus of maths and science, which is too vast for schools kids. From VII grade it gets very difficult and I strongly feel that at this stage students need to be given a choice. Only those who want to take up maths in their higher education should be taught intensive maths and not everybody. n Choice on career subject: Today, with so much exposure to information, students want to try out various career paths and not n

the same old engineering and medicine. They should be given a chance to major at least in one subject of their choice at the high school level itself. n Avoid lingua paranoia: Languages are also another area which need to be worked on. In Andhra Pradesh, languages are forced on the students. I have seen students who come from other states find it difficult to cope with the second language which is Telugu. This child who is good in other subjects fail in language and this moral is totally down after that. A very serious

and practical step needs to be taken when it come to second language. n Teach the teacher first: A great emphasis should also be given on counsellors. Schools in Hyderabad have teachers as counsellors who are not well equipped. This will do no good. Schools need to have a full time counsellor and they should give talks on various arenas which is very important for the growing up teens. IRENE SWAROOP PSYCHOLOGIST AND YOUTH COUNSELLOR

restricted to the transferring of knowledge from textbooks also need to be changed. Teachers’ and children’s absenteeism is another issue. Teachers’ perspectives are related to inadequacies in the teacher training institutions. Lack of community participation in the education process leads to low accountability of schools towards the community and other major stakeholders. Lack of trust in Government schools prompt parents to send their children to private schools, which are associated with better results. Since these schools face pressure from the parents regarding the performance of the students, only some subjects in demand get highlighted. Lack of regulation of this trend is also another major concern, since it tends to make education stressful and less meaningful and enjoyable for the children.

6.3 Academic Leadership and School Monitoring It is the vision and standards set by the leaders of any endeavour which have great power to determine the quality of results of that endeavour. Thus, if the leaders of institutions and initiatives have capability as well as clarity of aims, they will be able to guide their organisations better. This will, in the long run, ensure better returns for the children, who are the direct beneficiaries of these efforts. Quality of leadership, monitoring process and on-site support is important for quality in school education. The Headmaster is the primary person at the school level responsible for effective functioning and for harnessing appropriate support from community and parents. The headmasters need to be chosen appropriately and empowered to ensure that the institution runs well. The absenteeism will decline, classroom processes will become child involving and the school will be more sensitive to the needs of children, if the headmaster allocates the resources and guides the personnel with wisdom and pragmatism. constitutional spirit and causing unrest that consequently led to about 800 suicides of innocent Telang ana people. Arun Kumar alleged that it was the indecisiveness of the Congress president on the formation of Telangana statehood that drove the youth and students to com-

mit suicide. “The UPA government under Sonia’s leadership had announced the formation of Telangana state on December 9, 2009, but later went back on its promise. It was only after this announcement that the number of suicides have gone up in the Telangana region," the petitioner alleged. In his petition Arun Kumar appealed to court to direct the Central Govern ment to pay compensation to the next of the kin of 800 persons who have killed themselves for the cause of Telangana.

Goa casinos need regulatory body PANAJI: The promoters of Goa’s newest casino said on Tuesday that a gaming commission or a regulatory authority was “absolutely essential” to monitor casino gaming arenas in the state — the only one in India which allows casino gambling. John Snowball, vice president (Gaming Operations) of Crown Lounge and Casinos, which started operations earlier this year, said that the gaming commission could be on the lines of any of the regulators in place in countries where gambling is legal. “It is absolutely essential to have a gaming authority or a regulator to ensure that gambling is properly conducted in Goa,” said Snowball, one of the most well known casino management professionals in the state. “It is not so hard to have an authority like this. There are gaming bodies around the world which control casinos. It is not a difficult thing to set one up in Goa,” Snowball said

Baby girl for Aishwarya, grandpa Amitabh ‘ecstatic’ MUMBAI: A girl was born to star couple Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan at a private hospital here Wednesday morning. The baby, their first child, was born at the Seven Hills Hospital. Mother and daughter were both doing fine. “IT’S A GIRL!!,” Abhishek, 35, posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.com. He had recently said he wanted a daughter who looked like Aishwarya.

Proud grandfather Amitabh Bachchan too couldn’t control his happiness and tweeted: “I AM DADA to the cutest baby girl, A dada ji ... Ecstatic.” Hospital sources said the delivery was normal and came a few minutes before 10 am. The Bachchan and Rai families were present for the momentous occasion. Aishwarya, 38, developed labour pains around 4 a.m. and was taken to the labour room where the delivery took place after nearly six hours. The actress is on the fifth floor of the luxury private hospital in Andheri east. The hospital had booked three rooms on the floor — one for Aishwarya, the other for the Bachchan family and the third for the Rai family. The entire floor was kept out of bounds for

Agni-IV missile with high accuracy is a success BHUBANESWAR/NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday succeeded with a very high level of accuracy in its first test of a newgeneration Agni-IV strategic nuclearcapable missile with a 3,500-km range from a defence base in Odisha, an official said. “The missile, which has the capability to hit targets over 3,000 km away, was tested from a facility off the state’s coast in the presence of senior defence officials,” defence ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar told IANS. “The test was successful,” he added. The Agni-IV is a modified version of the Agni-II strategic missile and was originally called Agni-II Prime. “The successful launch of new generation strategic missile Agni-IV that has a designed range of 3,500 km achieved all mission parameters, which included a range of 3,000 km,” Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) spokesperson Ravi Kumar Gupta told IANS in New Delhi. “Agni-II Prime has now been renamed Agni-IV,” he added. India’s Agni-series missiles are one of the five projects of DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) launched in 1983 and concluded in 2008 after all its

design objectives were achieved. However, India’s IGMDP follow-on projects, such as Agni-IV and the Sagarika submarine-launched ballistic missile, are continuing. During Tuesday’s test, the Agni-IV missile was launched from a Road Mobile System at 9.00 a.m. from Wheelers’ Island in the Bhadrak district of Odisha on India’s east coast, about 200 km from Bhubaneswar. The missile had a text-book trajectory and reached a height of about 900 km and reached the pre-designated target in the international waters of the Bay of Bengal, Integrated Test Range (ITR) director S.P. Dash later said in a statement. All mission objectives were fully met. All the systems functioned perfectly till the end, encountering the re-entry temperatures of over 3,000 degrees Celsius, Dash said. This missile is one of its kind in the world, giving a quantum leap in technology, he said. “The missile system has opened a new era in the class of long-range missile having capability to carry strategic warheads for the forces and has provided a fantastic deterrence to the country,” he claimed.

Aishwarya was admitted to the hospital Monday night, according to her spokesperson. The Bachchan family had been waiting for the baby’s arrival for a few days and preparing for the child’s welcome. The girl is Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan’s third grandchild, after Agastya and Navya Naveli — children of his daughter Shweta and son-in-law Nikhil Nanda. Aishwarya tied the knot with Abhishek in April 2007 and rumours about her pregnancy had been doing the rounds ever since. ‘Assassin’ legend plays out in epic new video game

SOME LAND IN JAPAN TOO RADIOACTIVE FOR FARMING Miwa Suzuki

TOKYO: Farmland in parts of Japan is no longer safe because of high levels of radiation in the soil, scientists have warned, as the country struggles to recover from the Fukushima atomic disaster. A team of international researchers said food production would likely be “severely impaired” by the elevated levels of caesium found in soil samples across eastern Fukushima in the wake of meltdowns at the tsunami-hit plant. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, suggests farming in neighbouring areas may also suffer because of radiation, although levels discovered there were within legal limits. “Fukushima prefecture as a whole is highly contaminated,” especially to the northwest of the nuclear power plant, the researchers said. The study looked at caesium-137, which has a half life of 30 years and therefore affects the environment for decades. The legal limit for concentrations in soil where rice is grown of the sum of caesium134 and caesium-137, which are always produced together, is 5,000 becquerels per kilogram (2.2 pounds) in Japan.

“The east Fukushima prefecture exceeded this limit and some neighbouring prefectures such as Miyagi, Tochigi and Ibaraki are partially close to the limit under our upper-bound estimate,” the study said. “Estimated and observed contaminations in the western parts of Japan were not as serious, even though some prefectures were likely affected to some extent,” it added. “Concentration in these areas are below 25 becquerels per kilogram, which is far below the threshold for farming. However, we strongly recommend each prefecture to quickly carry out some supplementary soil samplings at city levels to validate our estimates.” The study said “food production in eastern Fukushima prefecture is likely severely impaired by the caesium-137 loads of more than 2,500 becquerels per kilogram”. It is also likely production is “partially impacted in neighbouring provinces such as Iwate, Miyagi, Yamagata, Niigata, Tochigi, Ibaraki and Chiba where values of more than 250 becquerels per kilogram cannot be excluded”, it said. The study was led by Teppei Yasunari of the Universities Space Research Association in the US state of Maryland.

He and his team used daily observations in each Japanese prefecture and computer-simulated particle dispersion models based on weather patterns. Japan has been on alert for the impact of radiation since an earthquake and resulting tsunami struck the northeast of the country on March 11, crippling the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Its cooling systems were knocked offline and reactors were sent into meltdown, resulting in the leaking of radiation into the air, oceans and food chain. Shipments of a number of farm products from the affected regions were halted and even those that were not subject to official controls have found little favour with Japanese consumers wary of the potential health effects. An official in charge of soil examination for the agriculture ministry said government tests had been conducted on soil in Fukushima and five other prefectures earlier this year. He said contamination levels in Fukushima had exceeded 5,000 becquerels per kilogram, but were below that level elsewhere. “We are now conducting further checks covering 3,000 spots in Tokyo and 14 prefectures and plan to publish the results later,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO: Stealthy death-dealer Ezio Auditore takes his noble crusade to the 16th Century Ottoman Empire with the Tuesday release of Ubisoft’s latest Assassin’s Creed video game. In a blend of historical truth and narrative fiction, “Assassin’s Creed: Revelations” traces Auditore’s exploits in thwarting an age-old grab for global domination reaching into modern times. “Revelations” is the fourth installment in a franchise that has sold more than 31 million copies since it launched four years ago. The game is the third and last centered on Auditore. “This is the finale of the Ezio trilogy, and Altair from the first Assassin’s Creed also makes an appearance,” said Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key. “Anyone who has played any of the four games should think about ‘Revelations’ as tying up the stories of both characters.” Ubisoft boasted logging more pre-orders for “Revelations” than for any other title that the French video game titan has released. “We have lots of great twists in the story and Ezio has new moves because he is a master assassin now,” Key said. “There are new villains in a new city, Constantinople.” Auditore was a brash young Italian who turned to his family’s assassin heritage after a tragic betrayal in his first video game appearance. He is bearded and graying in “Revelations,” with some in-game dialogue marveling at a man his age scaling buildings, leaping from rooftops and engaging in other assassin acrobatics. A hallmark of the franchise has been “historical fiction” that blends rich details from past centuries with fantasy characters locked in a battle between assassins and Templars hunting for a mysterious orb of great power.

“If it didn’t have a mature rating, it would most likely be used in schools,” Key said while discussing the realworld history richly woven into the Assassin’s franchise. Game play is set in the context of genetic memories relived by a modern day descendent of a legendary line of assassins that includes Altair and Auditore. Ubisoft plans annual releases of installments in the Assassin’s franchise, which has grown to include novels, comic books, Facebook games, and short films. “We have studios all over the world contributing,” Key said. “There is constantly someone working on Assassin’s Creed games, whether this one, the next one or the one after that.” Ubisoft signed high-profile athletes such as US mixed martial arts champion Jay Dee “B.J.” Penn to promote “Revelations” in advertisements featuring their professional records alongside their stats in the video game.

I pride myself on the work I’ve put in to become one of the best fighters in mixed martial arts Penn

“I pride myself on the work I’ve put in to become one of the best fighters in mixed martial arts,” said Penn, who has built a reputation for taking on challengers from any weight class. “A legend like Ezio uses a number of calculated attacks to overcome his enemies,” he said, referring to the “Revelations” character. “I approach each opponent to learn his weaknesses so I can focus on attacking the areas where they’re most vulnerable.” Revelations was priced at $60 for its North America release, with versions of the video game tailored for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 video game consoles.

OWS protesters back with a vengeance Activists back at Zuccotti Park after police eviction but are not allowed to camp inside DC protesters invite Obama to join march

NEW YORK: Anti-Wall Street protesters flooded back late on Tuesday into a New York park that had been their home for two months until police cleared the encampment, but they were barred from pitching new tents. The Occupy Wall Street movement was thrown into cri-

sis during a turbulent 24 hours that began with a surprise early morning raid in Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park to clear all tents in the privately-owned area. Protesters then spent the day playing cat-and-mouse with authorities as they sought to re-establish their base near

Shooting as protests target Berkeley BERKELEY: Police shot a suspected gunman on Tuesday on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, officials said, as hundreds of anti-Wall Street protesters marched on the elite college. It was unclear if the reported shooting, at the California institution’s Haas School of Business, was related to the protests, which came after riot police cleared a camp at Berkeley last week. “The suspect was seen carry-

ing a gun and entered an elevator. A staff member reported this to the police, who responded immediately. The suspect then left the elevator and entered a computer room. “The police followed him and asked him to put up his hands. The suspect then pulled out the gun, and police shot him. The area is now contained, and the Haas School has been evacuated until further notice,” it said.

Wall Street, the symbolic epicenter of a movement protesting alleged corporate greed which has inspired like-minded demonstrators in other US cities and abroad. In the evening, police reopened the park and let the protesters back in one-by-one — but only after a New York judge backed a ban on pitching tents, rejecting their legal challenge to the dismantling of the camp. “No one will be denied entry,” a police officer said at the gate, as people began to wander back in again. Organisers put the number at 1,200. Once inside, the crowd began to chant “All day, all week, occupy Wall Street.” Both sides were claiming a victory of sorts after judge Michael Stallman ruled that the owners of the park and the authorities were not denying

protesters their constitutional right to freedom of speech by banning them from camping. “Zuccotti Park will remain open to all who want to enjoy it, as long as they abide by the park’s rules,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement. But protesters were also elated that they were allowed back into the park, owned by Brookfield Properties, which they have been occupying since mid-September. Cheering protesters agreed to march to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday to mark the movement’s two-month anniversary. New York police moved into the park — a short walk from the stock exchange and the site of the World Trade Center — at about 1:00 am Tuesday with bright lights, high numbers of helmeted officers, and an army of sanitation workers.

Drop of golden sun creates history GENEVA: A 110-carat yellow jewel called the Sun Drop Diamond, thought the biggest of its kind in the world, sold for a record $10.9 million at auction in Geneva, Sotheby’s announced on Tuesday. “Ten million francs (8.06 million euros). Sold!”, Sotheby’s David Bennett said before about 150 people gathered for the sale at a luxurious Geneva hotel. He said the buyer was an “anonymous individual” who made the winning bid over the telephone. The sale price was slightly less than the estimations of experts who had valued the yellow diamond at between 11 and 15 million dollars.

‘Sun drop’ diamond fetches a record $10.9 million in Sotheby’s auction

Gemologists have certified the pear-shaped jewel as ‘Fancy Vivid Yellow’, the rarest and most desirable colour for a yellow diamond, Sotheby’s said. The gem was discovered in South Africa in 2010 and wowed visitors to London’s Natural History Museum where it was displayed earlier this year. The yellow diamond, about the size of a woman’s thumb, takes its colour from traces of nitrogen in its carbon makeup. “Every time we’ve shown it around the world, people have gone ‘oh my god’,” Bennett said “It has never been owned so the buyer will be the first person to wear it,” he added.

WASHINGTON: More than 300 protesters marched on the White House on Tuesday to invite an absent President Barack Obama to side with the Occupy movement, after police raids on camps in New York and other cities. “We would like to welcome him to the movement,” chanted the energetic but peaceful crowd from Occupy DC, amplifying a statement from a young male protester at the front of the procession. Recalling that Occupy DC is situated in nearby McPherson Square, the marchers — mostly unaware that the US president was, at that very hour, flying to Australia — shouted: “We’re just down the street! Join us!”

About 200 people were arrested during the operation, which saw only sporadic violence and ended before dawn, leaving cleaning crews to cart off piles of tents and scrub the square clean.

Facebook hit with porn and violent videos SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook Inc said on Tuesday that it is investigating a rash of unsolicited graphic images that hit some users’ accounts this week. The images, Internet links and videos depicting pornography and violence have hit some people’s Facebook newsfeeds in recent days. “We experienced a coordinated spam attack that exploited a browser vulnerability,” Facebook spokesman said in a statement. Facebook does not know yet who was behind the attack and a motive was not clear.

Levinson to succeed Steve Jobs at Apple

SAN FRANCISCO: Genentech chairman Arthur Levinson was named, on Tuesday, to replace the late Steve Jobs as chairman of Apple’s board of directors and Disney chief executive Bob Iger joined the board. The appointments are the first since Apple co-founder Jobs died of cancer on October 5 and were announced by Tim Cook, who replaced Jobs as chief executive of the company behind the Macintosh, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. “Art has made enormous contributions to Apple since he joined the board in 2000,” Cook said. “He has been our longest serving co-lead director, and his

insight and leadership are incredibly valuable to Apple, our employees and our shareholders.” Cook said Iger, who engineered Disney’s 2006 purchase of the Pixar animation studio from Jobs, “is going to make an extraordinary addition to our already very strong board.” In a statement, Levinson, who will remain as chair of the biotech firm while he is nonexecutive chairman at Apple, said he was “honored to be named chairman of Apple’s board and welcome Bob to our team. “Apple is always focused on out-innovating itself through the delivery of truly innovative products that simplify and improve our lives, and that is something I am very proud to be a part of,” he said. Iger said Apple “has achieved unprecedented success by consistently creating high quality, truly innovative products, and I am extremely pleased to join the board of such a wonderful company. “Over the years, I have come to know and admire the management team, now ably led by Tim Cook, and I am confident they have the leadership and vision to ensure Apple’s continued momentum and AFP success,” he said.

Business strategy key to enterprise success A.Saye Sekhar

HYDERABAD: When you look at multiple companies sprouting every year, one gets a doubt how long they would survive. Bipin Pendayala, vice-president of Computer Associates, says some companies move on, while some others fold up. What is the reason? They fail in strategic planning and execution. According to Pendyala, some of the Fortune 1000 companies too face this challenge. Against this background, the MasterClass seminar by Ambrish Cheeda, slated for November 18 at Ravindra Bharati, on taking the companies to the next level would be useful for corporate employees and also entrepreneurs who are establishing their start-ups. They can learn the various processes of strategizing. Sometimes, the companies are successful instantly as they ride on the popularity of the product or the success due to the

Bipin Pendyala

MasterClass seminar on Nov. 18 market conditions. Yet, they need to have a strategy in place. The companies need to identify their core competencies, and have a proper understanding of the market situation and also the ecosystem where they are positioning themselves. Pendyala said that every company had to put their strate-

gy in place from a planning point of view for the current and future – at least three to five years. Success or not, they should be in a position to go back to the plan and rework whenever it was required. For instance, if there was a good market for consumer electronics, about 25 companies

come up. While a lot of them seem to be doing well initially, some of them would get folded up soon. In 10 years, maybe only two to three companies would be performing well. Those companies owe their success to their planning on how they are going to stay ahead of the market and customer requirement. Ramesh Loganathan, vicepresident and centre head of Progress Software, says that the MasterClass event is timely when the industry is passing through turbulence. Though the scope of the event is beyond IT, he says it is interesting even from the standpoint of IT sector too. India’s cost opportunity is likely to go in the next seven to 10 years. Going forward, it is more about value and not cost. “We have to get towards higher value innovation, services, consulting, and products. That is a transformation for an industry. Today we are a pre-

dominantly cost-based services industry. Customers come to India because we offer reasonably good services at a much lower cost. With our cost structure increasing, that advantage will go away. It is imperative that the whole industry looks at a higher value opportunity. Therefore, how we organise and execute our strategy has to change. How do we do it? The only way is to move from cost-based to higher value-based offerings. That is all strategy support. “Unlike the strategy changes, this one involves mind-set change in the whole organisation. Leaders in the organisation at different levels have to be involved. The event is timely in that sense to that extent. Some of the aspects on strategy - how to devise, execute and build awareness are very different from the events that dwelt at length on technology, general leadership and management events so far.”

Not a sporting encounter Japan anthem booed in North Korea

Japan’s national TOKYO: anthem was roundly booed by a seemingly capacity crowd in Pyongyang on Tuesday as the former colonial power took on North Korea in a dead rubber World Cup qualifier. Live television footage from the hermit nation showed tens of thousands of North Korean fans at the Kim Il Sung stadium booing loudly as the Japanese national anthem was played ahead of the match. In marked contrast, the crowd, dressed largely in muted colours, joined in enthusiastically with the North Korean anthem moments later. Men in uniform with large hats could be seen behind the players as they stood on the sidelines of the pitch ahead of kickoff in a stadium entirely devoid of advertisements. The raucous crowd cheered wildly every time the North Koreans pushed forward, with one entire stand of the stadium regularly transformed into a living poster, as fans held up a red or yellow card to form a giant Korean-language slogan. A Korean state broadcaster, whose 10 cameras were supplemented by two from the private Japanese TBS network, provided professional-looking coverage of the game but steered clear of anything other than the action on the pitch. In one of the few close-ups of

the crowd several young Korean women wearing heavy coats smiled and cheered as they waved large national flags. The game came after Japan’s players were held up for four hours by a baggage and immigration inspection at a Pyongyang airport on Monday evening. The Blue Samurai touched down in the capital of the hermit state around 3.00pm, but were not able to leave the airport until after 7.00pm, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Kyodo News and other major media on Tuesday.

I am not planning on asking the players to do anything differently in this match Dour local officials warned players when they laughed, and confiscated items including bananas, chewing gum, and instant noodles, the Nikkan Sports and Sports Nippon newspapers reported. The airport experienced three power outages during the lengthy process. The team began their official practice around 8.00pm — three hours later than intended — wearing hats and gloves in a bitterly cold Kim Il Sung Stadium, reports said. Asian champions Japan have

already secured their passage to the fourth and final qualifying stage of the tournament but North Korea cannot now progress. But the North Koreans will be looking to avenge a 1-0 loss in their previous encounter with Japan in September. Speaking after the training session on Monday, Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni said the first match for Japan on North Korean turf in 22 years was just a regular game. “I am not planning on asking the players to do anything differently in this match. I am just going to tell them to enjoy themselves, grow together and play for the sake of the national team,” he said. Just 150 tickets were allocated for travelling Japanese fans at Tuesday night’s game, with visitors being warned to tone down their usual spirited support to avoid potential conflict with the authorities. Japan does not have diplomatic relations with North Korea, which still demands reparations from its former colonial rulers for wartime atrocities. The communist regime is widely despised in Japan, where feelings run high over unresolved abductions in the 1970s and 80s of young Japanese citizens who were used to train Pyongyang’s spies in Japanese language and customs.

Celtic face new, SPL probe into illicit chanting GLASGOW: Scottish Premier League chiefs are to follow in the footsteps of UEFA by investigating allegations that Celtic fans were involved in pro-IRA chanting at the club’s ground. European football’s governing body UEFA announced on Monday the Scottish giants would be brought before their control and disciplinary body on December 8 to face charges of “illicit chanting” during the 31 Europa League victory over Rennes on November 3. On Tuesday SPL operations officer Ian Blair said league chiefs would also be investigating claims that songs supporting the Irish Republican Army were also sung during a goalless draw with Hibernian at Celtic Park on October 29. Blair said the SPL’s move follows complaints by a former referee and senior policeman, Eddie Smith, to a match delegate. “Eddie has mentioned that there was pro-IRA chanting but we need to find out more about when it happened and what exactly went on,” said Blair. “We also have to establish that Celtic, as I am sure they will have, co-operated fully with the police in the aftermath of this event.” Celtic said Monday they will co-operate fully with UEFA’s investigation. “We have been made aware of this hearing in a letter from UEFA. We have not been given any detail on the nature of the alleged incidents and have not received any information on this matter directly from the police,” a spokesman said. “Celtic supporters have a magnificent record of positive support for their team, something recognised by both UEFA and FIFA in recent years and we are extremely proud of this reputation. “Therefore, the club will co-operate fully with any

UEFA investigation.” The charge relates to UEFA disciplinary regulation 11.2, namely: “the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, in particular if it is of a political, offensive or provocative nature”. Possible UEFA sanctions include a fine and ban on supporters, although Celtic could face a lesser punishment if found guilty as it would be deemed a first offence. Celtic’s Glasgow rivals, Rangers, have been punished on three occasions for “discriminatory” behaviour from their fans.

Eddie has mentioned that there was pro-IRA chanting but we need to find out more about when it happened and what exactly went on Blair

Celtic are a predominately Catholic club while Rangers fans are mainly Protestants. Both clubs have strong ties to Ireland, where the largely Catholic IRA once waged a terror campaign in its quest for Irish unity. The British controlled province of Northern Ireland is mainly Protestant while the Republic is largely Catholic. Celtic last month urged fans to stop singing pro-IRA chants after being “inundated” with complaints from their own supporters following their 2-0 defeat by Hearts at Tynecastle. Police announced they had launched an investigation into the “singing of sectarian songs” following the Scottish Premier League game on October 2.

Richardson, Laxman pitch for floodlights in Tests Match was stopped on Tuesday due to bad light at Kolkata KOLKATA: The loss of over an hour of playing time in the second India-West Indies Test match at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday led to calls from players and officials for use of floodlights in the longer form of the game. With the use of floodlights not being mentioned in the playing conditions for the Tests, play was affected once in the morning and later called off 52 minutes before the scheduled close due to insufficient light following overcast conditions. I have always felt that (the need of floodlights).. It’s quite challenging. It’s never the same as natural light. There are shadows around a red ball, playing under lights is challenging,” stylish Indian bat VVS Laxman said when asked about the possible use of floodlights in Tests. West Indies team manager Richie Richardson, who had in the past led the team as a player, welcomed the use of technology in any form for bettering the game. “I believe in technology... I fully support the use of lights in Test cricket... Anything that can assist the game is always welcome. If there are lights, why not use it?” asked the dashing batsman who played international cricket from 1983 to 1996. He said the crowds come to the ground to see the players in action. “You don’t want to be on and off (the field) with the light getting a bit low. This affects the concentration of the players.”

Preethi at Eden Gardens

Preethi cheers hubby Ashwin at Eden ground KOLKATA: The mehendi is still there on both her hands. It was a special moment for Chennai girl Preethi, who got married to young Indian offie Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday, to see her husband claim a wicket at the Eden Gardens here on Tuesday. It was the young spinner’s first Test scalp after he tied the nuptial knot with his childhood friend. Preethi, sporting a beige top and jeans, was the cynosure of all eyes on the upper tier of the coveted Club House stands at the hallowed ground. From there, she watched Ashwin beat Kraigg Brathwaite with the flight as the ball spun and the bat-pad catch was gracefully accepted by Gautam Gambhir standing close by. Ashwin’s success triggered celebrations in the galleries, but Preethi was cool as she went on munching some fried chips. By then, a large number of personnel from the print and electronic media had gathered around her seeking her reaction. But she did not agree. “Not now, I will talk to you later on,” she said. An official of the local organisers Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), who was escorting her, said: “We had arranged her seat in a corporate box. But she said she wants to soak in the atmosphere.”

US team banned from World Cup kabaddi CHANDIGARH: The US men kabaddi team has been banned from the ongoing World Cup in Punjab after the players refused to take doping tests, an official said Wednesday. The disciplinary action has been taken after the refusal of US team players to give urine samples to National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) officials in

Hoshiarpur on Monday. “Taking a serious note of the refusal by the players, the technical committee (of World Cup kabaddi) held a meeting and decided to impose ban on the US team for rest of the matches,” a spokesman of the organising committee said. The US team is leading Pool-B of the tournament in the men’s

section and the ban imposed on it will have a bearing on the event. The team is in line to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament. Five players from the team have been suspended after they tested positive in dope tests conducted randomly on players of various teams from 14 countries. So far, over 30 players have tested positive in doping tests in

the 20-day tournament which ends Nov 20. Hosts India and Canada have already made it to the semi-final. Neighbouring Pakistan is also likely to reach the next round. The opening ceremony was held in south-west Punjab town of Bathinda while the final match and the closing ceremony will be organised at Ludhiana.

Noah’s Ark has its legacy in Asian island Philippines’ Calauit Island is surrogate home to giraffes and zebras imported from Africa by late dictator since the 70’s CALAUIT ISLAND: With a taste for tropical fruit and a reputation as thieves, a herd of giraffes on a remote Philippine island is one of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’s most intriguing legacies. The 20 giraffes, along with dozens of zebra and antelope, are descendants of a boatload of animals imported from Africa in the 1970s — supposedly in a Noah’s Ark-style effort to save them from extinction. They were brought to tiny Calauit Island, where under a Marcos decree the locals were moved elsewhere to make way for the strange new inhabitants and bamboo forests were cleared so the lowlands resembled the savannahs of Kenya. Today just over 100 African animals — roughly the same number as the original batch — roam the island. They are being promoted to tourists as offering a glimpse of Africa in a remarkable tropical setting. Visitors who make the trek to Calauit, about 300 kilometres (180 miles) southeast of Manila, have the unique chance to sleep

in an open-walled gazebo and wake to giraffes and zebra grazing just a few metres (feet) away. “This has been an amazing experience, we’d never seen giraffes,” said Gleng Buele, 25, a nurse from Manila who, with three friends, flew to a rural airport then drove three hours on a rough road and took a boat ride to reach Calauit. And instead of being a tropical paradise for endangered animals as promoted, the island refuge is fraught with problems. Inbreeding is a concern

because no new animals have been brought in since the first ones arrived 35 years ago, while three species of antelope originally imported have died out, according to the island’s manager, Froilan Sariego. Meanwhile the villagers who used to live on the island are back and, according to Sariego, steadily killing off the animals either to eat or sell their meat, or to stop them from eating the villagers’ crops. “Our patrol people are scared to confront them. We are not

equipped with weapons,” Sariego said. Standing in a patch of savannah-like land, Sariego retold the story of losing the island’s biggest giraffe, “Binoy”, four years ago. “Binoy ate the crops of the settlers,” Sariego said, referring to the villagers who returned to the island after Marcos was overthrown and now mostly live as subsistence farmers and fisherfolk along the coast. “We found him with a spear in his side. He died eight hours after we found him.”

One of the leaders of the village communities, Dante Dabuit, acknowledged there was much frustration at the animals eating their crops. “Giraffes cause so much damage. With bananas, once they get at them, there is nothing left for us, They also eat the cashew leaves, and our papayas,” said Dabuit. “Even when we put up fences, the giraffes have long necks and they can reach over, or sometimes they just destroy the fences.”

Giant artwork created from 5,000 poppies

Teacher storms out of class because student did not bring him a snack

A

rtist Ted Harrison scattered over 5,000 poppies on the floor of St. Paul’s cathedral, in London, creating a giant artwork that highlight the involvement of children in armed conflict around the world. Seen from ground level, Ted Harrison’s art installation looks like a bunch of randomly scat-

tered poppies, but looked at from the Whispering Gallery, under the dome of St. Paul’s cathedral, the flowers form an image of three child soldiers, one from World War 2 and two from more modern conflicts. The installation is part of the St Paul’s Cathedral Arts Project, an ongoing programme which

seeks to explore the encounter between art and faith, and was created to raise awareness to the issue of children being used as soldiers. “The poppy is now a universal symbol of remembrance. At the time of year when we rightly recall British soldiers, sailors and airmen who have given their lives for their country, this work is a reminder of the many children who have also, throughout history, died as members of the armed forces. Today a UN convention forbids the conscription of anyone under 18 years of age, but the convention is widely ignored. It is estimated there are 250,000 children worldwide in military service, a third of whom are girls. When the work is viewed from above I hope something of the innocence of these children is conveyed along with a sense of innocence betrayed,” Ted Harrison said about his unique artwork.

A

teacher reportedly stormed out of a class after one of his students didn’t bring him a snack. George Parrot has had a strict policy that has lasted for 39 years, which states that every student must bring him some form of snack food on the first day of class. According to the Sacramento Bee, a handout read: “Not having a snack = no Dr. Parrott or TAs. Now you are responsible for your own lab assignment.” Parrot claims that the rule is his way of allowing students to engage with each other.

“Having these goodies in the class breaks down some of the formality and some of the rigidity in the class, which is one of the most stressful for students,” he claimed. He added that he doesn’t regret walking out of the class, saying “I can understand the immediate frustration. I’m sympathetic, but I’m absolutely comfortable with the conclusion.” “The ethos I’m trying to promote is incredibly important. It may not be appreciated, and that’s even more unfortunate. It speaks to their lack of understanding of higher education.”

agic tricks prey on people’s subpar powers of perception, but new work finds that the brain has tricks of its own up its

sleeve: People notice more than they think. In the research, presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, Luis Martinez of CSIC-Miguel Hernandez University in Spain and colleagues amazingly “read minds” with the Princess Card Trick, invented by magician Henry Hardin in 1905. Volunteers mentally chose a playing card from a panel of six cards, which then disappeared. When a second group of cards appeared, the researchers had miraculously figured out which card a person had in mind and removed it. Few people caught the trick: All the cards in the second set were different, not just

the card people had chosen. A few seconds after viewing the two panels of cards, participants were asked which of two new cards was present in the first panel. None of the volunteers could consciously recall which card was present. Despite these avowals of ignorance, when forced to choose, people got the right answer about 80 per cent of the time. “People say they don’t know, but they do,” Martinez said. “The information is still there, and we can use it unconsciously if we are forced to.” To see whether this unconscious knowledge works for objects other than cards, Martinez and his colleagues performed a similar experiment with pictures of men’s

faces. A similar kind of visual short-term memory helped people choose which face they had seen before, even when volunteers didn’t perceive that they knew the correct answer. These unconscious, short-term memories are finicky, Martinez and his colleagues found. If the researchers talked to the volunteers while performing the trick, the ability to identify the card that had been present worsened. (Magicians may deploy a steady stream of patter for this very reason.) And if the researchers revealed the secret of the trick, participants performed no better than chance at identifying the card.

Superconductor may hide long-sought secret Material could demonstrate existence of a type of particle proposed 70 years ago Devin Powell

A

new kind of superconductor can’t make up its mind about how to conduct electricity. Current passes through its interior without any resistance, as in a typical superconductor. But its skin behaves like a metal, conducting electricity but with some resistance. This split personality, described in an upcoming Physical Review Letters, could be the handiwork of something strange hiding on the surface — a two-dimensional entity behaving like Majorana fermions. First proposed more than 70 years ago, Majorana fermions is a theoretical type of particle that is its own antiparticle. Electrons and quarks and other particles of matter all have twin antimatter partners. Some theorists who suspect that neutrinos are their own antiparticles would be excited to find evidence that anything can act like Majorana fermions, even the surface of the superconductor in the new study.

Others hope that such particles could be useful for storing information in new kinds of computers. “This is great,” says Robert Cava, a chemist at Princeton University who wasn’t involved with the study. “Hopefully it will get people excited about this material.” Cava and colleagues were the first to create that material, made of copper, bismuth and selenium layered like lasagne. They showed that it’s a superconductor at temperatures within a few degrees of absolute zero. But until now, no one had conclusively proven that this superconductivity is any different from the run-of-the-mill variety discovered in mercury a century ago. To probe the material, Yoichi Ando of Osaka University and colleagues in Japan injected current into it using a gold wire. This excited electrons at the surface, creating ripples of energy. Conventional superconductors have a dead spot in their surfaces that prevents low-

energy slow-wobbling ripples from forming. But a close look at this material revealed a sea of waves bouncing up and down both quickly and slowly. Ando says that this pattern of ripples is “unambiguous evidence” of a type of superconductivity never seen before: topological superconductivity, in which electrons become

waves moulded into a complex shape that resembles the outside of a doughnut. These waves, says Ando, seem to be behaving like exotic two-dimensional particles at the surface of the material — specifically, Majorana fermions. “This is the best evidence so far for Majorana fermions in a solid material,” says Taylor

Hughes, a theoretical physicist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Still, the new experiment didn’t actually reveal the flat fermions themselves — only their supposed influence. No one has yet figured out how to directly detect them in solids. So it’s probably going to take many sources of indirect evidence to make the case that Majorana fermions actually exist in this material, says Hughes. One way to test the idea would be to use magnetic fields to create swirling vortices on the material’s surface. These vortices should be able to trap Majorana fermions and reveal it to be located not in a single spot, but stretched between two points like a rubber band. Being spread out in this way could make Majorana fermions useful for quantum computers. These devices store information in the quantum states of particles, which tend to be fragile. But Majorana fermions can be disturbed only by attacking both of their end points simultaneously, giving them a hardiness that could help future computers solve problems out of the reach of today’s technology, mistake-free.

Holistic view of mind, body and soul

Moderate drinking and cardiovascular health – beer is good

Artificial heart now a reality

Dr Sunil Kapoor

How expensive or affordable are artificial hearts? What does it look like?

A study reveals that beer, like wine, can reduce the risk of heart disease

B

eer could stand up alongside wine regarding positive effects on cardiovascular health. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by Research Laboratories at the Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura Giovanni Paolo II, in Campobasso, Italy. Both for wine and beer the key is moderate and regular drinking. The research, published on line by the European Journal of Epidemiology, using the statistic approach of meta-analysis, pooled different scientific studies conducted worldwide in previous years to achieve a general result. This way it has been possible to examine data concerning over 200,000 people, for whom alcohol drinking habits were associated with cardiovascular disease. Results confirm what was already known about wine: a moderate consumption (approximately two glasses per day for men and one for women) can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, up to 31 per cent less when comparing to non drinkers. What this research adds are new data on beer. For the first time, in fact, evidence about dose-dependent effect is shown for this beverage. Maximum protection is observed, for a beer containing 5 per cent of alcohol, with a consumption of

slightly more than an English pint a day. "In our research — explains Simona Costanzo, first author of the paper — we considered wine and beer separately: you first observe a reduction in cardiovascular risk with low to moderate drinking. Then, with an increasing consumption, you can see that the advantage disappears, until the risk gets higher. The interesting part of our research is that, among the studies selected for this meta-analysis, there were 12 in which wine and beer consumption could be compared directly. Using these data we were able to observe that the risk curves for the two beverages are closely overlapping". But beer as well as wine,

drinkers, should be cautious before toasting too much at these results. "What we are talking about — says Augusto Di Castelnuovo, head of the Statistic Unit of Research Laboratories and a pioneer in alcohol epidemiological studies — is moderate and regular drinking. I think we will never stress enough this concept. Wine or beer are part of a lifestyle. One glass can pair with healthy foods, eaten at proper time, maybe together with family of friends. There is no place for binge drinking or any other form of heavy consumption.” "The data reported in our meta-analysis — Di Castelnuovo emphasises — cannot be extrapolated to everybody. In young women

18

still in their fertile age, as an example, alcohol can slightly raise the risk for some kind of cancer. This could counterbalance the positive effect on cardiovascular disease and reduce the overall benefit of alcoholic beverages on health.” In the similarity between wine and beer regarding positive effects on cardiovascular health there is a still unanswered question: the evidence we are observing derives from alcohol alone or from other substances contained in beverages? Wine and beer are different in composition, except for alcohol, so we could think this is the main player. But they both contain polyphenols, albeit different ones. Researchers at Fondazione Giovanni Paolo II underline how this is something to look at more closely in the future. "A research like this — comments Giovanni de Gaetano, director of Research Laboratories at Fondazione Giovanni Paolo II — is part of a concept that our group strongly pursues: to look at people's real life. Health and disease are conditions deriving from our lifestyle. New therapies and new drugs are extremely important. But a healthy life, with a strong attitude toward prevention, is the key element of the medicine in the years to come.”

The total cost of the device and its maintenance in terms of medicines and tests would come to Rs1.6 crore — a staggering amount by any standards. This raises the question of science versus human life versus cost. Modern technology and gadgetry is becoming too expensive for comfort and is raising some basic doubts about the cost of maintaining human life. But we all know that whatever the cost, human life is beautiful and precious, but who is to pay for it? The government hospitals have raised their hands, private hospitals are expensive and the patient cannot afford. What is the meaning of science and technology and experts getting trained when it cannot be applied in the care of a human being? Is insurance the key? Let us wait and see if large insurance companies can handle the costs incurred. At present, it seems a difficult task of applying modern technology to work in India. In the US, it appears these devices are used as investigational and insurance plus the medical device industry bears the brunt of the cost. Let us come back to science, the artificial heart is a thumb sized device, which is attached to the anterior surface of the heart from the left ventricle to the aorta and pumps the blood from the ventricle to the aorta and into the body at an amazing rate of five litres per minute considering the size of the device. The flow is streamlined and non-pulsatile, hence the patient does not have a pulse and there are no heart sounds. The device works on rechargeable batteries and is working up to 3 years as on date. The patients are doing well. The operation is done under general anaesthesia. (The writer is a senior consultant cardiologist at Care Hospital, Hyderabad)

From mundane to luxury look

19

Figures show that when the economy dips, so do our necklines — and those figures don’t just refer to statistics. Look to any red carpet of late and it’s clear many celebrities are cutting a curvier silhouette in frocks that are, unashamedly, all about the bust. But in these times of austerity, forget about the big squeeze; the Wonderbra clench is out and the time has come for more of an uplifting effect — it’s where we want our spirits to head, after all

Sweetheart neckline, the toast of the cleavage world Coco Rocha

S

calloped, flattering and classically Fifties, the sweetheart neckline — with its rounded bust and cinched-in waist shape — really is the sweetheart of the cleavage world, popular with brides-to-be everywhere by offering all the sex appeal with none of the attendant sleaze. One needs look no further than Mad Men star Christina Hendricks, a firm ambassador of this onwards-and-upwards trend, as she recently poured her deliciously well-endowed proportions into a salmon pink

silk off-the-shoulder Cocotte dress from the Vivienne Westwood Couture collection. But while various styles have emerged — from Kirsten Dunst’s Dolce and Gabbana sundress, to Canadian model Coco Rocha’s elegant soft gown and Georgia May Jagger’s svelte black cocktail dress — it seems the most popular interpretation of the trend is the style championed by Florence Welch at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year awards last week. Featuring a long length,

Florence Welch

covered arms and a high choker neckline, the cut-out chest on her pale gold Alexander McQueen dress immediately drew the eye — a focus usually reserved for her flame red hair. Similar cut-out styles were adopted by lingerie model Abbey Clancy, who wore a patterned Emilio Pucci dress, and by style plate Alexa Chung, who sported a sexy black lace and velvet style from the same designer. The sweetheart neckline — in the case of Alexa Chung— is just as sweet on those with less to flaunt. But whether big or small, sales of balconette bras — the weapon of choice in achieving this anti-gravity look — are climbing. “Since the recession, the push-up balconette bra in particular has enjoyed a real renaissance at figleaves.com,”says the brand’s marketing manager, Christina Acklam, “And we have seen a 25 per cent rise in sales, with the brand adding new fashion styles every season to meet

Rachel Weisz

customer demand.” Sarah Shotton, creative director at Agent Provocateur, thinks this is down to a more natural approach, “There is definitely a move away from the padded bra as women are letting their real bodies do the talking — S the balconette bra does exactly this.” So there we have it. The only way is up. Emma McCarthy

A peep into the lives of cityʼs stars and achievers

CONTENT IN GIVING: Umesh with his parents Viswanadha Raju, and Subhadra and younger brother Mahesh

A Rebel With a Cause He doesn't believe in destiny, but if he did, he would credit fate for leading him to choose his current path says RTI activist and reformist, Umesh Pakalpati

ou could say, I've always been a bit of a problem child. Back then, I was a rebel without a cause. Now, I have enough causes worth fighting for — says Umesh and he is not kidding. From tribal rights to farmers agitations, RTI campaigns to electoral reforms, he's done them all. Now, he is the Chief Project Co-ordinator of Joint Action for Water, an NGO that works towards improved water and sanitation facilities in 75 slums of Hyderabad through organising an independent citizen's platform of slum dwellers. Born and brought up in Hyderabad, Umesh finished his BSc in Agriculture before he joined a fertiliser company. “I had a regular marketing job which was unsatisfying. I realised then that they were selling useless stuff to farmers whose lives were basically hanging from a thread. But the government would rather work with companies than deal directly with the farmers. It was a system in which

T

hat Umesh has chosen such an off-beat career doesn't come as a complete surprise to Subhadra. “Even as a child, he was always very determined. If he believed in something and set his mind to it, nothing could deter him from it,” says Subhadra wryly.

20

everybody was ganging up against the poor. It was then that I got out,” he explains. Not long after, Umesh got into the NGO sector. Talking about the influences that led him to take up the decision, he says, “I met some really smart and motivated people with a lot of great ideas. I also used to read a lot on political history and social issues. It helps open your mind. Once you understand the system you want to change it,”quips Umesh. But unlike many, Umesh doesn't consider it a chore to work in a slum. His designated work hours notwithstanding, he spends a lot of his time there. “Slum dwellers are not lab rats. They are my friends. What do you do when a friend is in trouble and calls you? You go out there and help. That's what I do,” says Umesh nonchalantly. How does his schedule affect his personal life? “Luckily my wife is currently staying in the US. So she doesn't have any big complaints,” says Umesh, grinning. When he has a little spare time to himself, Umesh finds himself reading, writing or travelling.

PRIDE

Nevertheless, his decision to give up a stable job to work in the NGO sector did create some apprehension. She explains, “As parents, you'll always wish for stability and comfort for your child. So initially, we were very worried. But he patiently explained his motives and convinced us. Then it took a little time for us but now, we support him wholeheartedly and that he's able to help people is a source of pride. We are very happy” Subhadra is also very gratified to see how both her sons have turned out. “That I have been able to inculcate a culture of learning in both my sons is very satisfying to me as a mother,” she states.

DIGITAL IS NO LONGER THE FORMAT OF THE FUTURE Madhureeta Anand promises that the digital film festival will get bigger and better now, with more innovative sections, aimed at giving a chance to new and young film-makers. The film-maker is confident that digital is what will bring in the money

D

igital is the way to go, believes Madhureeta Anand, film-maker and director of the annual digital movie festival, and says the format is a cheaper medium and can open up the Indian cinema market to moviemaking enthusiasts even outside the industry. “The new film-makers need a cheap format and digital will give that to them. So literally every one can express oneself and make a film. And so digital can and should signal the end of the need for a ‘mentor’ or being from the industry to make a film,” Madhureeta says. A Delhiite and a single mother, Madhureeta has had no godfather in the Hindi film world. She made her way in the highly competitive industry with documentaries. Her first fulllength feature film was Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye, which released in 2009. She has also promoted innovative digital film-making through her annual movie extravaganza

— the UFO 0110 International Digital Film Festival, the third edition of which will be held during February 23-March 1, 2012 in New Delhi. “Digital is no longer the format of future, it is actually the present. Everything is converging there. Even if you shoot on a non-digital format, you would necessarily need to make a certain amount of digital prints to release the film. “And with projection and exhibition going the digital way, it is only a matter of time before the whole process becomes digital. So really digital is here,” said the self-made Madhureeta, who took formal training at New Delhi’s Jamia University. “The risk takers, innovators, tend to choose digital. This could be for two reasons — budget and/or flexibility. This is what really interests me about digital,” Madhureeta added. Madhureeta promises the digital film festival will get “bigger and better” now, with more innovative sections, aimed at giving a chance to new and young filmmakers. “Sometimes the best stories come from people who have no awareness of the film-making process or the gigantic nature of the business. This naivete or freshness is what we will be looking for through the film festival. “Basically the UFO 0110 International Digital Film Festival will be a carnival of digital film-making and a place where we hope everyone can have their say — creatively that is! “In that sense it won’t be like a usual film festival. There will be lots of activity aimed at bringing in fresh and new con-

tent. Stuff that is really excellent,” she said. Madhureeta, who is working on her next directorial venture Kajarya, says though Indian film-makers talk about going global, they have a long way to go. “I would like to refute the premise that Indian cinema is going global. It’s not. We’re a self-sustained industry that doesn’t really need the nod of international audiences to make money or sustain itself. “Like Quentin Tarantino said, there are only three film industries in the world — Hollywood, India and China. But unlike the other two, we simply do not cross over internationally. “Yet there is a large audi-

ence around the world who are not necessarily NRIs who would love to see new cinema from India. But there is none coming. This is a gaping hole,” she said. Madhureeta feels the digital film festival will bridge the gap. “At the moment India is being seen as the hub of new possibilities. However, we do not yet have a forum where the new wave in films can find its full play. Our festival intends to be just that. “As people flock to the halls, it could demonstrate that the audience in India is changing and is more discerning than they have been given credit IANS for,” she added.

I am a very greedy actor Nikhil is soon going to be seen in Veedu Theda. He talks about his career so far in a candid chat

ikhil Siddhartha is often compared to Ravi Teja due to his histrionics and energy levels and it’s not without a reason. In one of his earlier films Om Shanti, he played a role nicknamed NRT (Next Ravi Teja) and his upcoming film Veedu Theda seems like yet another film where he would end up imitating Ravi Teja. “Oh no, I am not imitating him. It’s a big compliment when people compare me with Ravi Teja whom I like a lot but I do it because I have no choice. I know that I am not a big star, so the only option I have is to follow what my directors tell me to do,” Nikhil says. His upcoming film, Veedu Theda has been directed by B Chinni Krishna who played a comical role in Kotha Bangaru Lokam. “Chinni Krishna is a fabulous director. He’s also an actor and choreographer and I blindly followed his instructions while shooting for this film. I play a quirky character in this film who always does things differently,” Nikhil says. Having made his debut in Sekhar Kammula’s Happy Days, Nikhil has acted in seven movies so far. “I’ll always be grateful to Sekhar Kammula for casting me in his film. Four years back I was a nobody. Now people recognise me

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2011 because of the films like Happy Days, Yuvatha and Kalavar King and in that sense, I am very content. Looking back, I think I have done a decent job because I don’t think people would still approach me if they don’t have the confidence in me. I am not exaggerating when I say that I listen to two or three scripts every single day,” he says. In an industry which is ruthless in its approach towards not so successful actors, Nikhil agrees that it’s a struggle to survive with almost every film. “It’s very important for youngsters to score hits at the boxoffice otherwise no one will invest in you. Thanks to Yuvatha, I got five more films. I am a very greedy actor and I would want more hits to my credit,” he confesses. Among the actors who made their debut in Happy Days, Nikhil is the only other actor apart from Varun Sandesh whose films had a good run at the box office. But he

27

clarifies that there’s no competition between them. “Varun is a good friend of mine. He has been doing mostly love stories but there’s absolutely no competition between us. I have my own space. I am still trying to establish myself in the industry and people like me for all the funny and mass oriented roles I have been doing,” he adds. However, there’s another side to Nikhil which is completely contrast to his onscreen persona. “I hate it when people take me for granted and it has happened too many times in the past,” he confesses. Ask him about the worst experience he has had in the past four years, he replies, “My film Kalavar King had released on the same day as Ye Maya Chesave which went onto become a huge hit. That was a traumatic experience because I thought my film would have done better if it didn’t clash with a film like Ye Maya Chesave.” His best compliment so far has come from Sekhar Kammula. “He told me once that I was a director’s actor. I will try my best to keep up his faith in me,” he says. Any crushes in the industry? “I had a huge crush on Bhumika Chawla. I still remember how I ended up staring at her for 30 minutes at an event, although I have never met her,” he grins and goes on to add, “Right now my upcoming film Veedu Theda is my girlfriend and I have a date with her on November 18. I can’t wait to meet my date.”

TAKING GIANT STRIDES Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

You have been making films for the past 50 years. Have you noticed any prominent changes in the Chinese film industry? Chinese film industry has developed at a rapid pace over the last 10 to 15 years. Ever since China adopted the Open policy, our film industry has been increasing at a rate of 30 per cent every year. Currently we make around 500 films each year and we are hopeful that by next year, we make about 600 films. You are also the Chairman of the China Film Association. What are the biggest challenges you are facing at the moment? Our biggest challenge is to bridge the gap between good quality cinema, which is being made and what the audience would like to watch. There’s still a lot of work to do on our part. In India, there’s a general notion that China mostly makes martial arts films. Most of these martial arts films sold to India are mostly made in Hongkong. However, they represent a very minute portion of films being made in Mainland China. There’s a big variety in subject matters in films made in China and even the government encourages filmmakers to experiment with different themes. The government policy is ‘Let 100 Flowers Bloom’. But I agree that martial arts films represent the first wave of Chinese cinema, which was marketed

abroad and it was represented by Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. In the past ten years, Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon have been wellreceived abroad as well. Were they made in China or Hongkong? Of late, quite a few filmmakers are opting for international co-production mostly between China, Hongkong and Taiwan. Hero was a co-production of China and Hongkong and it was shot in China. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was directed by Ang Lee, who’s from Taiwan. It was shot in China and financed by Hongkong. Of late, China has become a big market for Hollywood films. Are you concerned about the growing influence of Hollywood? There’s a restriction on the number of Hollywood blockbusters, which can release every year. We do not allow more than 20 Hollywood blockbusters to be screened every year. A lot is being written about censorship in China. Do filmmakers face a lot of issues with the censor board? We believe that censorship shouldn’t be a hindrance. Every country has it’s own set of rules in terms of censorship and China has its own. Your latest film Xinghai (The Star in the Sea) narrates the story of Xian Xinghai, one of the most influential Chinese music composers. It’s a very inspiring and in a way nationalist. Are such films usually encouraged in China? In the past few years, the government and the censor board has loosened up a lot of rules. In fact, different films on different subjects and themes are encouraged. There’s no specific genre of films, which we encourage. Your wife Xiao Gui Yun has been codirecting your films for the past 50 years and they have done quite well at the boxoffice. What’s the secret of your success? We have always believed that films plus love equals happiness and this equation has always worked for us. What would be your message to India and Indian filmmakers? Indian filmmakers are very smart and successful. Their films are very successful and we have a lot to learn from Indian filmmakers. It’s fantastic that Indian people love and support their own cinema.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
