Want to topple the govt? Just give them a hard time. Or so the MIM seems to believe. The ruling party’s partner in the Corporation recently called off the general body meeting for the third time without any valid reason.

Beware of qazis. Not all of them are honourable. The police recently arrested a qazi for forcing girls into contract marriages, sexually exploiting them and then discarding them.

LAST YEAR... HERE ast year we had reported how the GHMC sanitation workers risked their lives to keep City streets clean. Despite the fact that most motorists are negligent and drive rashly during the night, the GHMC sanitation workers went about their work sweeping the City streets in the dead of the night, so we could wake up to a cleaner Hyderabad. Most of the workers did not even have the fluoroscent jackets to warn speeding motorists. There have even been incidents when sweepers were hit by speeding vehicles that conveniently sped away to escape blame. But the workers carry on relentlessly, after all the job earns them their bread and butter.

DO YOU THINK THE CONGRESS CONVENTION WAS A FARCE?

According to sources, the MIM seems bent on making things difficult for the Congress, as it cancelled the general body meeting for the third time. al body meeting, it appears the meeting will not be conducted this year. “It needs at least 20 days for conducting the meeting,” said Ale Jeetendra, standing committee member. The YSRC also has a plan to take a short route to raise its influence in the City by winning over as many corporators as possible, it is pointed out. An informal pre-poll alliance may be possible between MIM and YSRC, given the rhetoric of MIM chief, Asaduddin Owaisi.

ould a mayor run a large city corporation as per his whims? Could a partnering party refuse to give a reason for calling off general body meeting for a third time? Yes and yes, if the mayor happens to be Mohd Majid Hussain and the ruling party, the AIMIM. With no official explanation or a valid reason the general body meeting of the GHMC was postponed for the third time on December 15. The general body meeting has scores of issues to be discussed that concern a population of 80 lakh. But neither the mayor nor his party, the MIM, gave any reason even to its partner in power, the Congress. The Congress leadership in corporation also are groping in the dark as Postnoon found out. With no official explanation, several theories are floating. One concerns the BJP corporator of Langer House who was declared by court winner of the ward instead of the MIM corporator, who was disqualified. “The mayor does not want to swear in our party member, Uday Kumar. He is trying his best to keep it off and get a stay,” said BJP leaders in the corporation. Many others subscribe to this view. If this be true, it is unheard of in the annals of civic

hey continue to violate tenets and teachings and yet escape unscathed. The arrest of a vice-qazi, Syed Azmathulla Jaffri and his accomplice Mohd Ashfaq for holding contract marriages for profit highlights the exploitation of poor girls who are used and then discarded. They usually end up saddled with a kid and disease. Begumpet police inspector K Naarasimha Reddy said how some qazis arrange contract marriages under Islamic law with poor nubile girls and after sexually exploiting them, leave them with little money. The trick they do, said the police, is obtaining a divorce form signed from the girl along with a nikhahnama (marriage paper). After exploiting the girl for a couple of weeks or months, the man leaves, unafraid, because the divorce paper is already signed.

Jaffri, 42, and Ashfaq, 44, are natives of Nizamabad. It was after a news channel detailed how this qazi had duped scores of girls and their parents that police commissioner Anurag Sharma asked for a probe. The allegations turned out to be true and the vice-qazi and his friend were arrested. “What these poor girls get at the end is disease, a child and a messed up

life,” said a policeman who once probed a similar case in Hafizpet. Police regret that community leaders do nothing to prevent suchincidents or feign ignorance. But proving to be an exception, the chairman of Wakf board Moulana Khusroo Pasha Biyabani has ordered an inquiry into Jaffri’s activities and has asked to examine all marriages conducted by this person in Sultan Bazaar area.

Doctor Shaik Khaja Mohiuddin, 47, is a resident of Yousufguda and his friend G Prabhakar Rao, 42, is said to be a suspended constable of armed reserve police. According to the RGI police, Khaja , a native of Kareem Nagar district runs hospitals in different areas of Kareem Nagar. He came in contact with Prabhakar in the City, who is said to have conned many people posing as a producer of films related to Telangana. On December 11, Khaja came to the RGI airport to board a Delhi flight around 8pm. He is alleged to have consumed liquor and quarrelled with the SpiceJet staff. The staff lodged a complaint with the airport police, which led to the cancellation of his ticket. He was sent back. On reaching home, he told the incident to his friend Prabhakar. The next day, Prabhakar is alleged to have reached the RGI police station and introduced himself as a bodyguard of a senior police officer. He wanted to lodge a complaint against the SpiceJet staff. The complaint he wanted to lodge said `50 lakh and ornaments were stolen from his friend Khaja’s bag the previous day. On enquiry, the police found it all to be a false story. SpiceJet staff described what happened with Khaja. The doctor and his friend are now cooling their heels in jail.

Many of the top leaders too agreed that there was lack of coorindation among the party leaders and stressed on working together. The top brass of the party, AP in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad, CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy, PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana, state Cabinet and Union Cabinet ministers and scores of other leaders had no time to listen to the cadres. The day-long meeting revolved only around speeches by the top leaders. he continuous efforts of Telangana Congress leaders seem to have fructified. The Pradesh Congress Committee has decided to hold a meeting of party leaders on Andhra and Rayalaseema region on December 22 and 23 to discuss the issue of sending a delegation to the all-party meet, which has become a bone of contention among the party leaders. The Centre has invited only a two-member delegation from each party in AP. More will not be entertained. The proTelangana leaders are demanding that the two-member delegation should explicitly express single opinion supporting the separate T state formation during the all-party meet. But the Andhra leaders are saying that

they would stick to their stand of united AP. Keeping these things in mind, the T leaders met with party AP in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad in the last two days and requested him to solve the Telangana problem. Following the request of the T-leaders, Azad not only assured them that

he would bring the feelings of TCongress leaders to the notice of home minister Sushilkumar Shinde but also reportedly asked the PCC top brass to hold meetings with leaders of both regions. The Telangana Congress leaders are expecting that the proposed meetings would end this deadlock. “Yes, we think that the meeting being held by the party will help us in addressing the issue and reaching out to a consensus before the all party meet,” minister for BC welfare Baswaraju Saraiah told Postnoon. He felt that it was the right time for the party to take advantage of the all-party meet by extending its support to separate T-state. If you flip the covers, you’ll realise that the inscriptions of half of those will read the Hyderabad Book Fair or some other bookfair. I’ve loved coming to fairs since I was a child. Now I’m here with my children. They should appreciate the beauty of discovery, of chancing upon a rare book, a hard-to-find classic, an old forgotten edition of fairy tales or a brand new best-seller. For that alone, I’ll keep coming, year after year,” says self-confessed bibliophile and bank manager at KV Prasad. The 280 odd stalls lining the

Even with the mandatory 10 per cent discount, stall owners are confident they’ll make a tidy profit in the next eight days. grounds, here from varied States of the country, are also indicative of a subversive trend that defies all standing notions in the industry. Popular online shopping sites and major book retailers have had no lasting impact on the sales of these small-time bookstall owners. Even with the mandatory 10 per cent that’s required of all stalls to offer their customers (in addition to any that they might offer of their own will), they are confident they’ll make a tidy profit in the next eight days. S Sridhar, an executive at the Bookpoint stall, for instance, keeps great faith in the fair. He remarks, “We have had a stall for nearly all the 27 years that the Hyderabad Book fair has been around. Except for an odd year here or there, it’s been a great experience. Customers keep coming in larger numbers, there are better sales with every passing year. Our profits may vary but our return on investment is always assured. Last year we made around `5 lakh in profit. If

this year is better, we’ll take home `6-7 lakh but let’s see.” Even publishers seem to have taken notice. Harper Collins have for the first time this year set up a stall at the book fair. “The experience of buying online is very different from that of coming to a fair, browsing through the shelves and picking up books as you go. It’s more instinctive and memorable. Besides, there are some books here that you wouldn’t get anywhere else. We’re hoping to make a mark, if it works well, we’ll return next year,” promises a sales executive of Harper Collins, D Sainath. While the ‘rarity’ factor might have been true of previous years, there are few books here that you could really tag as hard to find. Especially of the English variety. A few gems lay ignored between stacks of pulp in each stall ranging from Fifty Shades and Hunger Games to Chanakya's Chant and Immortals of Meluha, which might go to explain the consistent sales figures. Also be warned, there's a lot of riff-raff to wade through to get somewhere nice. Still, if you are up for some serious searching and willing to brave the sweltering heat and the crowd, go. You might be rewarded with the finds of your life and or if nothing else, the latest edition of Tinkle. But rest assured, you won't return empty-handed.

I think the competition is a platform for us to try new things and go beyond our usual routine lives,”said Nutan, who won the 1st Runner up title for her fish fry and rice. Yesterday’s event had an even mix of almost everything in a kitchen – sweets, spicy treats and short eats. While Brahamaramba won the winning spot with her desi version of beans on toast called Peas on Toast, K Saritha came a close 2nd runner up with her sweet corn rice. “I chose Peas on Toast as the peas one gets in winter is very good. Moreover, the dish is healthy and very easy to cook,” said Brahamaramba. When asked what she plans to cook in the finals alongside first week’s winners Fatima, Haritha and last week’s winners Hima Bindu, Samriti Agarwal, Brahamaramba said: “I haven’t planned anything yet. I will start a week before the finals.” Though the Sunday was supposed to be split into two parts as usual – lunch and dinner – the latter half was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Hence, Brahamaramba is the only winner from yesterday – her finals seat is definitely booked.

Method: Boil the peas. Make a paste out of the onion. Heat the paste in a pan, add ginger garlic paste, the other spices and the boiled green peas. Deep fry slices of bread and cut the fried slices into four cubes. Top the quarter of the toast with a little grated cheese and the mixture of peas.

old Belgian player seconded what Sulfaro said. “I am comfortable in the hotel and like the food even if it is a little bit spicy. I like the chicken nuggets and tomato soup. The stadium is also very good.”

“T

he stadium is so big! I got scared when I first walked in. It took time for me to get used to it. The ambience is good and the flooring in the play area perfect,” said a player about the stadium. This coming from an Australian player is certainly a compliment, and describes the sports complex in the City quite aptly. That the compliments are coming from players of countries advanced in sports augurs well for sports in Hyderabad and India in general. India, which was originally scheduled to host the 11th chapter of the games next year, was offered the opportunity this year itself when South Africa backed out. In six months, all arrangements were made by the Sports Authority of India, Andhra Pradesh chapter with support from the Table Tennis Federation of India, to the satisfaction of the International Table Tennis Federation. With the conclusion of the games that went on without a hitch, and with everyone involved returning satisfied, Hyderabad can hope to host more such events.

from 27 countries made for a great gathering. Hyderabad did itself and India proud by capably organising an event of this size. All aspects of the programme were meticulously planned and executed to the T. The young players had an opportunity to rub shoulders with the best in the world, enriching their experience and preparing them for greater exploits at international meets in the future.

PRACTICE TO PERFECT

We need to improve our training if we aspire to make it to the podium of an international table tennis championship. Chinese coach Han Hua said there is no secret to the dominant force that China proved to be. “We spot talent in a youngster early and get him or her to concentrate on the game when in middle school. From then on, it is more time spent in the tennis court than in the classroom. You people concentrate on cricket. That is why you do well in cricket. Our TT foundation is very strong,” he said.

Ivan Sulfaro of Australia couldn’t stop heaping praises on the facilities provided to the foreign delegates, the stadium, the food and most of all the treatment meted out to them. The 10 minute drive to and back from the hotel is a pleasure and the buses are comfortable, he said. “India is taking very good care of us. The people here are very warm. At the hotel that we

are staying, we are being treated very well,” he said. When asked to elaborate on the food being served to them, he said, “We are being served authentic food, which I am loving. I eat Indian food back in Australia as well so I am used to it.” He could not get the name of his favourite dish he ate, but described it clearly. “It is this saffron rice with chicken in it.” Hyderabadi biryani is sure going places! Hyderabad doesn’t care about table tennis — empty stands do not bring out the best in players. Crowd support does wonders to local players, motivating them to perform at levels much higher than their ranking may suggest.

STRENGTHENING SECURITY Security vigilance at the venue of an international event is a matter of grave concern. Arrangements at the stadium left a lot to be desired.

vGenco boycotts solar power bidding It is a bureaucratic fudge that solar power price was capped at `7.50 per unit when power tariff is shooting skywards, Genco officials say. RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com

W

hen nodal agency AP Transco invited power generation units on Wednesday for a pre-bid meeting on solar power generation, there was no representation from AP Genco. According to officials from the power generating unit, it has pulled out of the solar power generation race in AP after the State government had capped the price of solar power at `6.50 to 7.50 per unit, the lowest in the country. According to senior officials from APGenco, the capped unit

price of solar power will hit the businesses of the generating unit that has already to its credit two solar power plants in the State. “In simple terms, it is not a lucrative business offer and will affect the revenue generation of this power unit. So the departmental heads decided to opt out of the race.”

WHAT NEXT?

The move to pull out of the race to set up more solar power plants in the State will mean that the power department will currently look into the projects at hand. APGenco’s maiden entry into the solar power production scene

began in July 2012 with a massive 1MW photo voltaic cell solar power plant at the Priyadarshini Jurala Hydel Power project in Mahboobnagar. This plant, after being commissioned and integrated into the State grid,

promised to provide 1MW power to the State, especially to the districts of Hyderabad and YSR, after being incorporated into the grid through the local DISCOM - CPDCL. “When we have at hand Krishnapatnam and Jurala power projects, generating funds worth `8,000 crore for new solar power plants will only burden us. The decision may be rolled back if the solar power tariff rate is hiked but this is not likely to happen in the near future,” said a chief engineer from APGenco. The decision was taken by the APGenco Board, which comprises of the chairman, directors and

managing director. The decision to pull out comes at a time when the State continues to reel under a severe power shortage, in spite of an energy conservation mission set up to deal with it. While the State Energy Conservation Mission emphasised on giving importance to renewable sources of energy, it comes as a surprise that the power generating unit has decided to pull out despite the hype and importance being shown on paper. It must be noted that APGenco thermal power stations have achieved highest annual generation of 35,970 MU during 2011-12.

Government news service Agencia Brasil said 90 million reales would be used exclusively for environmental cleanup and 220 million reales would serve for measures to prevent future spills. Federal prosecutor Gisele Porto said that the fine should send a message to all oil producers that “it is better to invest in preventive measures than to pay a fine for polluting."

dvancement of technologies is bringing a paradigm shift in the computer training. Premium institutes like Jetking are not only digitising their content to support their classroom teaching but also facilitating the students with these digital and interactive modules to study at home. Suresh G Bharwani, chairman and MD of Jetking, said, “Online training is taking the market share of offline vocational training. Instructor-led training is decreasing with the evident of e-learning technologies. In this scenario, the training institutes have to digitise their content and push interactivity in the training. For instance, we have digitised our content and the instructor uses this content

while teaching in the classrooms and is later supported by modules at home. “The technology has not only made learning interactive but also affordable. For instance, a course supported by e-learning, which has two classroom sessions in a week, is reducing the tuition fee costs for the students by around 60 per cent. Students can effectively use these e-learning modules at home, which will be complimented by the instructor. The emerging 4G Internet will enable faster and uninterrupted connectivity making learning possibility irrespective of the location. Talking about the industry, he said, “Vocational-training institutes business is reduced by 30-40 per cent compared to last year and there is a need of shift in adopting digitised training.”

Opportunities Number of jobs that were created in the IT industry in 2011: 15 lakh Manpower required by cloud computing by 2015: 20 lakh Manpower required in hardware by 2020: 75 lakh Manpower required in networking by 2020: 11 lakh

He further added, “The IT industry will also see a gradual growth in the next four years. There are humongous opportunities being created in the IT industry with the advancement of technology. Around 30 crore smartphones will be sold in the next four years. The connectivity in the country will be increased with the growth of this smartphone market, which will give lot of opportunities for employment and businesses. “Customers will not only

use the applications for various purposes, but these applications will also be increasingly used by businesses for decreasing costs. “For instance, a farmer with apple orchards in some corner of the country can upload the images of his crop (apples) describing factors like quality and price with his smartphone and can be easily accessed by the retailer. This will exclude the middleman and create a winwin situation for both the farmer and retailer.” “The IT industry will emerge as a business by itself rather than merely supporting various businesses. The government is also spending hugely to create skilled manpower through NSDC. However, there is still a need to bridge the gap between academia, industry and government, which results in quality manpower for the industry,” he said.

World CRISIS WORSENS

Syrian jets attack refugee camp BEIRUT: Warplanes bombed a Palestinian refugee camp in south Damascus on Sunday for the first time since the start of Syria’s more than 21-month conflict, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The air strike killed at least eight civilians in the Yarmuk camp, which has been rocked by intermittent violence over the past few months, the Britain-based watchdog said, addding that others were in critical condition. The raid came hours after the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) made significant advances in Yarmuk, a camp resident told AFP by Internet.

Angry Birds to take on Star Wars Franchise wars

Angry Birds fact-file

1 billion copies of Angry Birds have been downloaded till now There is an Angry Birds themepark at the Särkänniemi adventure park in Finland. Angry Birds developer Rovio is the secondmost popular company from Finland, next only to Nokia National Geographic published a paperback book titled Angry Birds Space: A Furious Flight Into The Final Frontier

The rise of Angry Birds is set to create a franchise war between Angry Birds and Star Wars. Disney recently bought the right for Star Wars from Lucas films and the studio is set to release more movies under the banner. Rovio, the developers of Angry Birds had tied up with Lucas Arts to create an Angry Birds game, but it needs to be seen if there will be similar tie-ups between the franchises in the future.

A TV series based on the game is expected to make its debut soon One of the 2012 New Models for Hot Wheels cars from Mattel is based on the Red Bird from Angry Birds.

GOOGLE GOES CLEAN Days after they tweaked the image searched interface, Google pushed out another update which hides all NSFW (Not Safe For Work) images, unless you explicitly search for them. In short, a search for Sunny Leone, will reveal fully clothed pics of the porn star much to the frustration of teenagers worldover. Google had pushed out a similar to Indian users a couple of years back, by which safe search was on by default. The new update however is a little more strict about letting pornography through its gates. Competing search engines like Bing had a similar feature in place for Indian users.

CONSOLING PRESENCE

Looks like gamers can’t wait for the next Xbox to come out. The number of Google searches for Xbox 720 — rumoured to be the name of the next console — are increasing every day and according to Google Trends more people are interested in it than the next version of PlayStation. However, most of these people might be disappointed as the console might be out only in early 2014. According to rumours, the delay is because of shortage of an AMD GPU that is used in the console.

No we didn’t HELSINKI: Finnish mobile gaming company Rovio said that a movie based on its hit game Angry Birds could result in the group establishing an animation studio rivalling global giant Walt Disney. Rovio chief executive Mikael Hed said that the animated 3D film, which will not reach cinemas until the summer of 2016, could lead to the company setting up an animated movie studio that would compete with California-based Walt Disney Animation Studios. "If this goes very well, that is what is going to happen. Certainly we are structuring this in a way so that it's possible for us to continue to produce

more movies after this one," he said. "In March, we are going to start rolling out our worldwide series of short animations, which will be available through digital and traditional channels." Rovio is aiming high with the film version of the smartphone game, hiring John Cohen, producer of computer-animated comedy Despicable Me to produce it, and David Maisel, former chairman of Marvel

Studios, as an executive producer. The 3D film is financed mostly by the company itself to ensure it has complete control over the end product. "It's about creative control and about the financial upside as well," said Hed. "We have a strong balance sheet ourselves and therefore partly paying it from our own cash balance and partly through regular movie financing instruments."

The company, which like Nokia, is based in Espoo outside Helsinki, is not worried that interest in Angry Birds will have cooled off by the time of its release, almost four years from now. "We are doing so much around the Angry Birds as a franchise that I am sure that we will not disappear from the public eye until then," he said. Rovio said in October it would open its first theme park in Asia next year at a site near Shanghai as it builds on the brand of the hugely popular game. "Angry Birds Land" will be the firm's third theme park after one in Finland and another in Britain.

Samsung has denied buying parts form a dealer that employs children. Apple has been under fire for the past couple of years for manufacturing phones at companies that employ children and treat employees poorly. Now it’s time for Samsung, which has become the leading smartphone manufacturer globally, to face the ire of human right activists. The controversy started off last week with a report that claimed that the Korean giant was sourcing parts from a company in China that employed underage labourers. There have been talks of most tech giants sourcing parts from such dubious companies, but only Apple had come under scanner.

Europe’s gateway to space

S

weden’s small Arctic town of Kiruna has a surprisingly international airport with regular flights to London and Tokyo, but it has even bigger plans: to offer commercial space flights. Spaceport Sweden, a company founded in 2007, hopes to be able to provide the first flights within a decade from Kiruna’s airport. “We’re working on establishing commercial flights from Sweden to space for tourism and research, and to create a launching pad at the airport,” explained the company’s enthusiastic director, Karin Nilsdotter, seated in her office at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF). The idea is that space tourists would take off for a maximum two-hour trip into space aboard futuristic spacecraft currently undergoing testing, which resemble a cross between an airplane and a space shuttle and which can carry between one and six passengers. The sub-orbital flights will send passengers 100 kilometres (60 miles) above Earth and allow them to experience five minutes of weightlessness. Kiruna’s location in the far north of Sweden, and Europe, makes it a prime location for space flights, Nilsdotter said. The space flights would not be disturbed by heavy air traffic, nor is the region a densely populated area. The wide-open spaces within Sweden’s borders also mean no bureaucratic red-tape to be resolved with other countries. Kiruna also has 60 years experience of space research to its credit. IRF was founded in 1957 and the Swedish space research and rocket centre Esrange, located in the town, was founded in 1966. AFP

DEATH PENALTY: YES OR NO?

12

MAY I BE HANGED HARD TALK

PK Surendran

S

oon after Kasab was hanged for his crime in Mumbai, the UN Secretary General BanKi-moon renewed his plea for abolition of death penalty. Ban welcomes a record vote by a General Assembly committee calling for a moratorium on death penalty. India, US and China were among 39 nations voting against the resolution. The non-binding draft resolution got 110 votes in favour of the abolition and there were 36 abstentions. Amnesty International vociferously argues in favour of the abolition of death penalty. It says more countries are now in favour of abolition because deliberately taking one’s life is immoral and ineffective. Many worthies have argued against death penalty. I am just one ordinary citizen who everyday sees life in the raw; so my stance is born of reality, not pedantic thoughts. Those arguing against death penalty are the influential people — who belong to the elite, ruling class. They have not experienced the pain of injury. Asking for a blanket ban or moratorium on death penalty is, at best, an elitist populist view. First, I’d keep the political killings separate from other crimes like murder, rape, terrorism. Political killing, like that of Socrates, is naked vendetta of

the ignorant and the arrogant that held power. As the one in power sees the rival differently, and when the situation reversed, the views too get reversed, and it become clear that it would be utterly unjust to kill political prisoners. This is one category the UN and Amnesty could canvas for a moratorium. While it is true that flaws in justice system lead to innocents getting hanged, it is also true that there are crimes that by no stretch of imagination could be condoned or merit pardon. It’s not the high-profile death one should remember when one thinks of capital punishment, but the cruel killing of the hapless. I would ask those arguing against death penalty the following questions. If they answer to the satisfaction of the collective conscious of the society, I will admit defeat and accept their line. n What do you do with men and their parents who kill innocent women for not bringing more dowry? Before voting, think for a moment these women are someone’s children. n What would you do with men who, to facilitate debauchery, torture their wives to death? n What would you do to surgeons who agree to kill female foetus for money? n What would you do when well-armed terrorists deliberately slaughter defenceless people for no fault of theirs (like the Mumbai carnage or Bharuch train fire)? n What would you do when a young man, supposed to be a

support to his parents in old age, kill them for property or for any other reason? n What would you do to those who gang up and rape a helpless woman? n What would you do when a so-called upper caste or village villain kill a poor man as if he were a fly? Or set fire to their homes in the dead of night? n What would you do when a serial killer jumps parole and

kill more? Let me not hear the arguments that life term is enough. Lifer is not enough if a person was convicted at the age of 20, He will be free by 35 and he may revert to his old ways. No, my friend, if anything, we should not do away with death penalty even if it does not deter more crimes. To be sure, it never does, as long as man remains what he is: half devil and half divine.

Everything was wrong with the event as all sorts of people came up lashing out at the triumvirate—Botsa, Kiran, Azad. As the Congress has a responsibility to take care of all segments of the society, it should have carefully planned the meeting, giving a bit of space to all. At the end what all happened was a mass meeting which only provided a platform to senior leaders to hone their oratory and support the governmental liberalisation initiatives recently taken. What was the outcome? The meeting proved the Opposition true: the Congress is an unruly crowd of people representing varied interests. Representations of women, T-Congress, BCs were non-existent and the Chiranjeevi faction was thoroughly disappointed. The meeting also lacked glamour figures from the Centre and it all comes to one word: window dressing.

The President has spoken

arack Obama has spoken and though he said it teary-eyed, his words reflect conviction and solid belief that change must happen if tragedies like school shooting are to end. The gun lobby, which hold considerable clout in the running of American politics won’t be happy and may have started pulling strings to torpedo any action in the direction of amendments to the gun laws. But now Obama has spoken and he should not go back: this is his moment, his chance to do something like his great inspiration Abe Lincoln.

ivalries on the sporting field are not an unusual sight. Be it a clash between India and Pakistan or on similar lines, a match between England and Australia; all these ties have near similar stories to narrate where the adrenal levels are very high. Such encounters, not only have players getting involved in a tussle but many a times sees an active participation from the spectators too. On December 9, Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand was struck by a projectile thrown at him from the crowd during his side’s match against Manchester City. The incident which saw the player bleed, occurred after a late goal by Robin van Persie sealed the match’s fate in United’s favour. While this episode did draw flak from various quarters, it is not the first time something on these lines has occurred. This kind of rivalry not only exists at the international level but is predominant on a much smaller platform, like in our very own Hyderabad. One can witness this even at the collegelevel. A perfect example of this situation is the rivalry which is present between Vignan Jyothi Institute of Technology (VJIT) and Malla Reddy College of Engineering and Technology (MRCET). While there are many colleges in the city which do maintain a "healthy competition" with the other educational institutions, the tussle which exists among the followers of VJIT and MRCET is something most engineering-going-college-students are aware of. The physical director of VJIT, Ramesh does not mince his words when talking about this rivalry. “In August 2005, VJIT and Malla Reddy College reached the finals of the BSIT (Bandari Srinivas Institute of Technology) cricket tournament. MRCET took the first strike and were dismissed for a paltry score. But

the MRCET camp brought a car onto the field and circled around the VJIT boys. They hooted and supposedly made some comments which did not go down well with the VJIT students and this resulted in a clash between the two colleges,”

the physical director added. “I believe that it was since then that the enmity between these two sides grew further.” Since this incident, there has always a strain in the air when these two sides meet, no matter at which level they clash; it could be the group stage or the final of any tournament, irrespective of the sport. Though there are tense moments when these two sides take on each other, yet both the sides have not accused the other of playing in an unfair manner. They respect each other’s presence. “There is certainly a small amount of rivalry but then all the players play like professional sportsmen,” says Rajgopal, physical director of MRCET.

ENERGY DRINKS NO MORE EFFECTIVE THAN COFFEE?

In a new study published in the Nutrition Reviews journal, researchers suggested the main benefit of energy drinks is probably down to a generous dose of caffeine. Earlier this year, a study found that energy drinks have up to 14 times more caffeine than other soft drinks.

How much dirt do you eat? Eating dirt can become an addiction for quite a few. Such people have an irresistible craving for clay, chalk, cement, bricks or soil and are relieved only after they’ve eaten it, doctors say. DEEPASHRI V

W

hen I was browsing the internet randomly, I came across a series of posts called My strange addiction on a TLC site. What immediately caught my eye, partly because I couldn’t believe it, was an addiction to eating dirt. As someone who has always associated addictions with alcohol and drugs, I was curious to know more about this. How can someone eat dirt and get addicted to it? And why? Pica is an eating disorder where people get addicted to eating foods that have no nutritional value. It could range from eating chalk and paint to detergent powder. Geophagy, an addiction to eating dirt, falls under pica disorders. “It is an impulsive control disorder,” said Dr K Siva Prasad, consultant psychiatrist at Vivekananda hospital, Begumpet, and professor of psychiatry at Osmania Medical College. “They have a strong affinity and intense craving (for dirt). When they see it, they can’t control themselves. And they experience relief once they finish.” It is believed that pregnant women in rural Africa deliberately eat clay. The clay there is

said to be rich in nutrients and minerals. There are conflicting reports about the ill effects and benefits of soil nutrients. While some research papers published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information show pregnant women who eat soil regularly had low haemoglobin levels, researches mentioned in the Centres of Disease Control and Prevention indicate that eating soil can build immunity. CDC also mentioned that with the increasing rate of soil pollution, the risk of acquiring infectious diseases is also high.

ANEWS PP-LYBRIEFS YOURSELF

Dr Prasad has treated quite a few patients, and said that the most common are the cravings for clay, chalk and slate pencil. “It also affects physical health, not just mental. Most patients will end up with anaemia. It is also stigmatising for them.” He said it could be an isolated disorder, or could be accompanied by other compulsive disorders. Some people have irresistible craving for even cement, bricks and pieces of the wall. “When they realise there is

something wrong, they try and cover it up. They usually eat it when everyone’s asleep or when they’re alone at home,” said Dr Savita Date Menon, clinical psychologist practicing at Apollo hospital. Dr Savita said the main treatment involves behavioural therapy. Not only in pregnant women, it can even be seen in some children and teenagers. She said it is hard to ascertain the cause. Treatment takes a long period of time and it cannot be done within a few sessions or a month.

The iMuscle application for iPhone and iPad is a user friendly application that acts as a portable exercise assistant. It enables you to quickly search and choose strength and flexibility exercises for most muscles of the human body. These exercises can be sorted into routines for multiple users that can be saved for future reference.

Leukaemia is a cancer of blood and bone marrow. When a person has leukaemia, the body makes too many white blood cells (leukocytes). There are many kinds of leukaemia. Leukaemias are part of a bigger group of diseases, the blood cancers (hematological neoplasms). Untreated, leukaemia may lead to death within weeks to months. About 90 per cent of all leukaemias are diagnosed in adults.

The colour of your eyes depends on the genes you get from your parents, but at birth most babies appear to have blue eyes due to the pigment melanin. The melanin in a newborn’s eyes often needs time after birth to be fully deposited or to be darkened by exposure to ultraviolet light, later revealing the baby’s true eye colour.

Tarun Mullick is credited with having developed capsule endoscopy. It is a way to record images of the digestive tract for use in medicine. The capsule is the size and shape of a pill and contains a tiny camera. After a patient swallows the capsule, it takes pictures of the inside of the gastrointestinal tract. Its primary use is to examine areas of the small intestine that cannot be seen by other types of endoscopy.

DISCOVERY

RESEARCH

Congenital heart defects during early pregnancy Researchers from the University of East Anglia found that the beginnings of important parts of the heart can be traced to very early stages of embryo development. They are currently investigating chicken eggs. LONDON: The origins of congenital heart defects could be traced back to the first stages of embryonic development, a new study has found. Researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) found that the beginnings of important parts of the heart can be traced to very early stages of embryo development. Biologists investigated chicken eggs at the gastrulation stage — between 12 and 14 hours after fertilisation. They found that some cells would go on to create the anterior and secondary heart fields — after the initial forma-

tion of a primitive linear heart tube. This method of understanding the correlation between the embryonic origin of cells and later stages of development is called ‘fate mapping’. The addition of these early cells to the growing heart is crucial as it allows the heart to develop and form other important structures including the outflow tract. The research is the first to ‘fate map’ the origin of the cells which contribute to the outflow tract in early stage embryos. Many cardiac malformations present in newborns are

“The next step in our research will be to identify the factors, which guide these early cardiac progenitor cells.” associated with the outflow tract and it is hoped that understanding some of the underlying causes may be helpful to affected families. “We were researching chick embryos, but the process of development in humans is very similar. However while the gas-

trulation stage takes place within just a few hours in chicks, it takes a little longer in humans and happens in the third week of pregnancy,” Professor Andrea Munsterberg, from the school of Biological Sciences at UEA, said. “It is likely that what we learn in chick embryos can be applied to human development. The next step in our research will be to identify the factors, which guide these early cardiac progenitor cells to the right place at the correct time,” Munsterberg said in a statement. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE. PTI

Aerobic exercise makes brain smarter AUCKLAND: The physical benefits of regular exercise are well documented. Now researchers in a New Zealand university say that people who routinely perform aerobic exercises are also smarter than those who do not. Hayley Guiney and Liana Machado from the University of Otago, New Zealand unearthed evidence that highlights the importance of physical activity and its role in improving cognitive function throughout life. A certain amount of mental deterioration is expected with advancing age. But aerobic exercise benefits cognitive function such as switching between tasks, and selective attention and working memory, the journal Psychonomic Bulletin & Review reports. Review of studies by researchers consistently found that fitter individuals scored better in mental tests than their unfit peers. Scores in mental tests also improved among those who were assigned to an aerobic exercise regimen, compared to those told to do stretch and tone classes, according to an Otago statement. Both the updating of working memory and the volume of information which could be held was better in fitter individuals or those who followed an aerobic exercise regime. IANS

EXERCISE

Climb serially, burn more calories

LONDON: Climbing one step at a time burns more calories than leaping up several stairs, according to scientists from the University of Roehampton. They found climbing five flights of stairs five times a week — an ascent of around 15 metres — burnt an average of 302 calories if the stairs were taken one at a time.

But taking two steps with every stride will only burn 260 calories, they say. Lewis Halsey, senior lecturer in comparative and environmental physiology at the university, said: “We were really interested to find out what expended more energy overall — attacking the stairs two at a time and climbing them quick-

ly, or taking them more sedately one step at a time and reaching the top more slowly,” the Daily Mail reports. “Our study reported the calories burned ascending stairs, the potential weight loss value of climbing stairs if done regularly and frequently during the week, and also the different energy costs of ascending stairs

one step at a time versus two steps at a time. “And our conclusion: it is better to take the stairs one at a time, if you want to burn the most calories.” He added that the greater total energy expenditure of onestep ascents must be partly explained by the fact it takes longer.

But there might be a biomechanical explanation too. Taking the stairs one at a time may result in faster rates of muscle shortening, which increases energy turnover. Previous research from the University of Ulster found office workers who began regularly climbing stairs quickly improved their fitness. IANS

KAKURO How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

QUICK CROSSWORD enced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so

on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

WORLD SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

NBA

Lochte confirms status as short course giant

Calderon sparks Raptors’ win

Ryan Lochte won his fifth and sixth golds at the world short course championships, taking his toll to eight in all for the week and 30 in his career. ISTANBUL: Ryan Lochte (right) won the 100m individual title in 51.21sec ahead of Australia’s Kenneth To with George Bovell of Trinidad in third at the 2012 world short course championships on Sunday. The 28-year-old New Yorker then anchored Matthew Grevers, Kevin Cordes and Thomas Shields to 4x100m medley relay gold in 3min 21.03sec, ahead of Russia and Australia. Lochte had already won the 200m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle relay, 4x200m freestyle relay and 200m individual medley titles, adding silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 100m butterfly for good measure. He was also the only swimmer to set world records in Istanbul -- in the semi-finals of the 100m medley and final of the 200m medley. Lochte, a five-time Olympic champion, and the heir to the now-retired Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympian of all time, is the only swimmer in history to win eight medals at the same world short course championships. His career total now stands at 30 medals of which 20 are gold.

Great Lochte giveaway sparked by childhood snub ISTANBUL: Ryan Lochte completed a six-gold dominance of the world short course championships on Sunday before revealing that a childhood snub by a sporting legend inspires him to give away all of his medals. The 28-year-old New Yorker clinched his fifth and sixth gold medals of the week in Istanbul when he won the 100m medley

and anchored the USA’s 4x100m medley relay team to victory. His career short course total stands at 30 medals, including 20 gold. The American’s prowess in the pool in Turkey was matched by his generosity out of the water after he revealed he gives all of his medals away. “I looked up to this Olympian and asked him for an autograph and he said no,” he said.

“I swim in a bunch of races but that’s what I train for. I like change and that’s why I want to do everything,” said Lochte. “For me, this is fun in the sport of swimming. I train for everything. I push my body to limits other athletes are afraid of. That’s why I am able to swim two races in 30 minutes.” The United States ended the five-day championships with 27 medals, 11 of which were gold, ahead of China with 11 medals including three gold. Hungary were third in the table with a 10-medal tally of which three were gold. Russia’s Vladimir Morozov gave notice of the danger he will pose at the Rio Olympics in 2016 when the 20-year-old, Los Angeles-based Siberian won the 50m and 100m freestyle. Morozov defeated France’s Olympic champion in the 50m freestyle in a time of 20.55sec against 20.88sec. In the 100m, his winning time was 45.65sec to finish ahead of Australia’s Tommaso d’Orsogna in 46.80sec. Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh, a multi-medallist in the Olympics and world championships, is still waiting for his first short course title. AFP

TORONTO: Spanish guard Jose Calderon (above in red) scored 18 points, passed off 14 assists and grabbed 10 rebounds to power the struggling Toronto Raptors over the visiting Houston Rockets 10396 in an NBA game Sunday. The Canadian club improved to 6-19 with its second triumph in a row after having lost six games in a row while the Rockets lost for the fourth time in their past six starts, falling to 11-12. Reserve Alan Anderson led Toronto with 24 points while DeMar DeRozan scored 19 points and added seven rebounds for the Raptors. James Harden scored a game-high 28 points for Houston while Marcus Morris added 19 points and Chandler Parson scored 12 points. Omer Asik grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for the Rockets. AFP

ENGLAND IN INDIA

Eng win series as Test fizzles NAGPUR: England were 240 for three as IJL Trott (left) scored a century in their second innings at lunch on the fifth day of the fourth and final cricket Test against India here today. England are in a good position to seal the first Test series victory in India in 28 years but their paceman James Anderson said earlier they are not taking things for granted and want to negotiate the first session of the final day carefully. England are leading the series 2-1 and a draw result tomorrow will get them a historic series victory. England

will resume their second innings at 161 for three. “There’s still a long way to go in the game. It’s really important start for us tomorrow. The first hour will be crucial. If we can get through that then hopefully we can build a couple of good partnerships throughout the day and make sure the game is safe,” said Anderson Anderson also said that scoring runs on the slow VCA Stadium track in Jamtha won’t be easy tomorrow. “Kohli and Dhoni played extremely well yesterday, but I think we’re in a pretty good position in the game. It’s a

pretty flat pitch and as a seam bowler you have really got to run in and give it everything to try and get anything out of it. I tried to do that yesterday. “Maybe I was feeling a bit tired towards the end of the day, but as soon as we saw an opening to get amongst their batsmen we all tried to pounce on that,” he said. Anderson was asked the incident which the Indians felt it was unsporting on the part of Jonathan Trott, who smacked a ball, which slipped out of Ravindra Jadeja’s hands while bowling, to the boundary ropes. HOBART, AUSTRALIA: Sri Lanka will chase 393 runs to win the first Hobart Test after bowling Australia out for 278 on the fourth day on Monday. The Australians finished nine wickets down after captain Michael Clarke retired hurt with an injured hamstring after smashing 57 off 46 balls and injured bowler Ben Hilfenhaus batted despite a side strain. Australia collapsed, losing their last eight wickets for 146, after openers David Warner (68) and Ed Cowan (56) put on 132 for the first wicket. Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath captured five for 95 to lead the Sri Lanka counterattack.

The highest successful run chase in 10 previous Tests at Bellerive was Australia’s 369 for six against Pakistan in 1999. The home side looked to be travelling along nicely going to lunch at 146 for two before it all unravelled in the middle session as they went after quick runs for an apparent innings declaration. Shane Watson went three overs after lunch, going after a referral went against him for a stumping off Herath for five and he was soon followed by Phil Hughes. Hughes, who scored 86 in the first innings, chopped Shaminda Eranga on to his stumps for 16. Matthew Wade, sent in

ahead of Clarke to accelerate the scoring, hit 11 off 14 balls before he holed out to Nuwan Kulasekara at long on off Herath. Clarke went after the runs and reached a whirlwind halfcentury off 43 balls, but he called for the team physio for a right hamstring injury and retired hurt on 57. The wickets kept tumbling and Peter Siddle was brilliantly snapped up by a diving Prasanna Jayawardene off Welegedara for four. The afternoon clatter of wickets was in sharp contrast to the extended morning session when Warner and Cowan were largely untroubled. AFP

Woodwork wins out as West Ham hold West Brom WEST BROMWICH, UK: West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United both failed to reverse disappointing sequences of results after a 0-0 draw between the teams in the Premier League on Sunday. West Brom midfielder James Morrison came closest to breaking the deadlock at The Hawthorns, twice striking the crossbar in the second half, as his side ended a run of three consecutive defeats. The draw left Steve Clarke’s men in sixth place, two points below the top four, while visitors West Ham lie 11th following a run of matches that has seen them pick up just five points from a possible 18.

Walker had come closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, only for his rasping 25-yard drive to be parried by visiting goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel. Tremmel also denied Jermain Defoe in the closing stages, while injury time saw England midfielder Scott Parker make his first Spurs appearance of the season after a spell on the sidelines with an Achilles problem. Spurs had slipped out of the top four after shipping two late goals in a 2-1 loss at Everton last weekend, and Vertonghen said he was relieved that his side had held firm in the closing stages on this occasion. “(The goal) was at the perfect time,” the Belgian centre-back told Sky Sports. “Swansea play good football, but I think we made lots of chances today. We were strong to the end, because we know what’s happened in six or seven other games.” There were worrying scenes for Swansea in stoppage time when top scorer Michu was pole-axed in a collision with Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

MADRID: With Real Madrid trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona by 13 points, Jose Mourinho (left) admitted Sunday that the title race is over. While Barcelona kept up their prolific form with their 15th win in 16 games by beating second-place Atletico Madrid 41, Mourinho’s stuttering Real could only draw 2-2 against lowly Espanyol.

“The league is now impossible,” said Mourinho. “It is the first time that I have been in a situation like this where my team are a long way off their objectives. “Thirteen points is too big a gap to overcome but what we have to do is go out and play each game. We shouldn’t be thinking about who is first, second or third. We have to be stronger. I don’t want to make a drama out of it, I will treat it as another stage of my life,” he adde.

PSG eye silverware to match financial might

Stevens replaced as Schalke coach

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN: Brazilian giants Corinthians won the Club World Cup in Japan on Sunday, overcoming European champions Chelsea 1-0 in a closely-fought encounter. Striker Guerrero got the goal as the Sao Paulo club secured their second intercontinental title — they won the FIFA Club World Championship in 2000.

LONDON: Jack Wilshere has given Arsenal a timely boost by revealing that he is in talks about signing a new contract with the club. The London side were eliminated from the League Cup by fourth-tier Bradford City on Tuesday and have fallen well off the pace in the Premier League ahead of Monday’s trip to Reading.

PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain’s quest for a first Ligue 1 title in 19 years continues after Montpellier upstaged the newly-rich capital club to claim a surprise maiden championship in 2012. Backed by the considerable wealth of Qatar Sports Investments, last season was supposed to represent a changing of the guard.

BERLIN: Schalke 04 have sacked coach Huub Stevens after their 3-1 defeat to Freiburg left them with two points in their last six Bundesliga games, the club announced on Sunday. In a statement, the club said Stevens has been ‘sent on leave with immediate effect’ and there will be a press conference in Gelsenkirchen.

Champions Juve held a four-point lead going into their 17th match but took full advantage of Inter’s 10 defeat away to Lazio. after two late goals gave Bologna a shock 3-2 away win. Montenegrin striker Mirko Vucinic (top) opened the scoring for Juve with barely 90 seconds on the clock, and midfield veteran Andrea Pirlo doubled the hosts’ lead on the quarter-hour with a sublime, curling freekick. Claudio Marchisio made it three for Juve with a low drive from the edge of the area after latching on to Sebastian Giovinco’s squared pass. Atalanta’s Thomas Manfredini was red carded for a second bookable offence just before the half hour after a rash challenge on defender Giorgio Chiellini, and although they battled there was no way back for the Bergamo side. Despite the growing gap, Juve coach Antonio Conte remained cautious: “It was a good result for us against a difficult team, but the season is far from over.
