School curriculum may have films HYDERABAD: Remember the days when you wanted to bunk the social ethics class because of the monotonous drone the session was and you are not surprised now when your child too has the same opinion. Now, think about the lecture on “standing up for justice” being delivered as a combination of movie clips of your favourite superstars fighting social evils — the idea is absorbed by you automatically. Education will be more interesting if the out-of-the-box idea of the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI) to include cinema as a part of school curriculum as a teaching aid. “Good cinema can help in communicating ideas. Just as books, cinema, too, can be used as an effective teaching aid,” feels actress and CFSI chairperson Nandita Das, who is currently camping in Hyderabad for the 17th International Children’s Film Festival of India, said. “The idea originated around two years ago, when the previous edition of the ICFFI was organised here. Since then, the CFSI has been fine-tuning it, in collaboration with some schools and preparing the course content. We can actually use good cinema as a teaching aid, as a means to communicate ideas...

nannounced rescheduling of screenings, lack of communication and sub-standard makeshift theatres continued on day two as well. Children — the target audience and focus of the film festival — were at the receiving end as little effort was taken to address their concerns. Their frustration was evident when some of them were seen shouting at the inefficiency of the organisers at one of the venues.

International Children’s Film Festival, Hyderabad We are talking to a number of schools, where children and teachers together are watching films and giving their feedback and helping us create a film curriculum,” Das elaborated. Just as films, the curriculum too should be fun-filled, entertaining and positive to make it

interesting for children, Das pointed out. “This can help in creating more awareness about the world of cinema,” Das said. “Music, dance and theatre make education system more holistic. Ahmedabad-based Riverside School is helping the CFSI in creating a curriculum on

cinema, while Delhi-based NGO ‘Dil Se’, working with street-children, which was a part of the ICFFI experts panel, is trying to prepare a lesson plan. If everything works out, we would like to introduce cinema in school curriculum from the 2012-13 acaPTI demic year,” she added.

ACB probe into cricket association enters key phase MD INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

The AntiHYDERABAD: Corruption Bureau (ACB) is in the final phase of evaluating actual value of the under-valued materials in the construction of the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal. “We are in the process of evaluating the actual value of the alleged loss. Once the evaluation

process is done, we may arrest the accused based on the evidence available with us,” K Sampath Kumar, joint director (Crime Investigation Unit), told Postnoon today. The ACB chief clarified there was no stay on the investigation by the court but the court has only declined to intervene in the probe. The High Court on Tuesday had accorded permission to

police to go ahead with the probe or register arrest as it deems fit of the 16 members of the HCA in connection with the irregularities in RG cricket stadium construction. The Court has dismissed the petitions of all the HCA members, including Shivlal Yadav, praying that they should not be arrested. On Tuesday, the Court made it clear that the case should be pursued.

On the other hand, one of the accused in the case DS Chalapathy, who is currently holding the position of Hyderabad Cricket Association secretary, has welcomed the High Court order said that all the officials of the HCA who have booked by the ACB in the case are ready to face the inquiry. He also announced that they do not have any plans to go for an appeal in the case.

T

he government proposal to hike the penalty for demanding capitation fee in professional colleges to Rs 1 Crore has raised the hackles of the managements. N Sharat Reddy, CEO of Shreyas college of Engineering of Nagole, said, “We cannot run the engineering colleges with just Rs 31,000 fee. Go to Bangalore, Chennai or elsewhere and check the infrastructure and compare them with those in Hyderabad. Ours look like government colleges by comparison. There all are corporate colleges with latest and Hi-fi infrastructure. The paltry government fee will not

ensure quality education.” Even the government fee, small as it is, is not forthcoming, he complained. “The AP government,” Reddy charged, “is responsible for closure of several colleges as they did not get the fees so far under the fee reimbursement scheme. Some colleges have not paid salaries for the last 4 months. What to do in these circumstances?” In other states 50 per cent of the seats are for managements as against 30 per cent here. We cannot sustain. Let there be a common fees like Rs 70,000 across the board and abolish quota, we will not have to seek capitation fees, the educationist said. The managements complain that they have not

U

nable to bear the harassment meted out by her husband for money to buy liquor, a woman along with her two kids attempted sui-

received payments from the government for the past two years. The government must change the system, change the fee structure then something can be done. Otherwise we cannot give salaries and no good lecturers and no placements are possible. Meanwhile, K Chiranjeevi Reddy, president, AP Technical colleges managements association termed the new penalty unjust. “They do not charge fancy sums. It may be true of medical colleges as they are said to be taking capitation of up to Rs 1 crore. If at all a penalty is to be prescribed, it should not exceed Rs 25 lakhs. If the government is not convinced let it take over all the seats and run it,” he opined.

Is the Rs 1 Crore penalty for capitation fee in FACES VOICES professional colleges justified? MALKI ARJUN, PRESIDENT, AFFILIATED COLLEGE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION

It’s very good that they are charging such high penalty for capitation. There is too much of privatisation in education and it’s time the government takes control. Rs 1 core is an appropriate amount especially for engineering colleges.

I worked very hard to get a seat in a good college, and there are others who get in just because they have money. The new penalty is good. At least now there will be fewer students through management seats.

cide at Hussain Sagar Lake, late on Wednesday night. The Lake police who noticed her trying to push her kids into the lake rushed to the spot and rescued them. According to Lake Police

inspector K Srinivas Rao, “The victim, K Sumitra, 25, a resident of Banjara Hills has been married to Vijay for ten years now and the couple has two children, Akshay, 7 and Sunil, 6. While Sumitra is working as an ‘ayah’ in St Augustin High School, Vijay whiled away his time and harassed her for money.” He added, “He used to further go home in an inebriated condition, drag her out of the house and thrash her in full public glare. In fact, the welts on her body are quite visible. Unable to endure the torture she decided to end her life. Our men noticed her and saved her.”

It’s a very good education act that has been implemented. But what’s the guarantee. With so much corruption I’m sure even this will become an act just on papers.

Teacher training needs complete overhaul 6.3(b) Teacher Training and Need for Responsible Unionism

6.4 Quality of Teacher Performance and Attitudes Teacher preparation and professional expertise is crucial for planning and organising learning experiences in classrooms. Even though the capability of teachers to plan and organise teaching-learning process based on the curriculum and

the syllabus is varied among teachers, the delivery of curriculum in most cases is still not meaningful. It does not relate to the context of the child and her level. No space is created for her participation and for individual or group tasks and presentations. Most teachers rely on textual matter and transaction of the same without any value addition like adding of examples, illustrations etc. or referring to resource books /material. There is no evidence of planning and strategising to help children learn. Teachers do not seem to bring TLM to make children engage in learning. This is a question related not only to the lack of training, but also the lack of favourable attitudes towards these resources. Most of the teachers and supervisors rarely refer to library books, modules, internet, professional magazines etc. Professional growth includ-

Expert’s suggestion

Another major issue that needs to be addressed is the training facility for the teachers, which have the potential of determining the quality and attitudes of the individuals who will take on the mantle of educating the nation. The condition of these institutions in the State needs improvement. The DIETs are understaffed even though the salary of the staff is to be received entirely from the MHRD as a grant. An alternative way of staffing of DIETs i.e., part time Lecturer/ Direct Recruitment etc. has not been developed leading to a stalemate and no appointments in the DIET’s. It is necessary to involve young persons, who are from universities and departments of education. They could be post graduates with M.Phil or Ph.D in some disciplines. Their coming to the DIET with a strong disciplinary background would strengthen the institutions. Leadership and direction is also provided to the teachers through teachers’ unions. In Andhra Pradesh, the situation of the teachers is complicated by the fact that there are many teacher unions. While the total number of such unions is close to 25, only 6 are officially recognised. Officebearers of about 25 of all these unions at State, district, mandal level are busy in union activities. The RJDSE, DEO, Dy. EO, MEO avoid visits to the schools of union leaders and do not take action against their unauthorised absenteeism. Thus, while the unions do wield great power to lead the teachers, it is not utilised constructively in a manner which will benefit the children.

T

his is a great initiative. The SSC syllabus needs to be turned around and made more practical. Students are used to by-hearting and reproducing this need to be changed and this will happen only with more and more practical methods of teaching.

ing promotions is not linked to addition of capability or to performance but only to the number of years spent in service. The system of transfers is also arbitrary and leads to a feeling of alienation from the system. Besides this, the support from School Complexes, MRCs for professional clarity, guidance is also not as per expected levels. There is a need to prepare teachers professionally and set up systems of motivation and learning so that they are able to take the effort to do justice to children from marginalised communities and recognise their strengths. Teachers need to be professionally oriented with appropriate accountability procedures and options for their carrier advancements linked to their performance. Another issue pertaining to the performance of the teachers is that the teachers are absent from schools for many hours and for many days. A careful look The syllabus for the secondary section is too vast, this needs be altered. For example a Class VI student has 60 lessons in Hindi. So much is one subject; it’s of no use at all. Focus should be more on the usage of the language. There are schools which func-

at the functional aspects of schools shows that they do not function seriously. Research shows that about 25 per cent of teachers are not available to the children for various reasons. This is a major concern and a reason for the parents to opt for private schools. Teacher performance depends upon his professional perspective, his preparation and commitment to children. It is reflected in his plans to transact curriculum, nature of activities and learning tasks used. The studies and monitoring reports shows that present situation is not appropriate. Teachers merely speak or read or have children read from the text book and do not even use the blackboard appropriately. The question of interactive classroom, posing open-ended questions, organising discussions, freedom to question and think, is inconceivable. There is very little clearly visible teachtion from 7am to 7pm, there should be a ban on these schools. There needs to be regulations on this new trend. This is one of the most dangerous trends that’s picking up in the AP education system. AYESHA RUBINA PRINCIPAL, GENESIS HIGH SCHOOL

4

With three more days to go before the final list of educational reforms can be suggested by the public we bring to you the reforms as proposed by Andhra Pradesh State Curriculum Framework 2011 ing and learning time. Teachers and the school believe that their job is to finish or ‘cover’ the text-book. Only a few teachers address the basic concepts required to develop the foundational abilities in children. There is no mechanism to visualise, asses and scrutinise seriously the performance of the teacher with supportive feedback. There is also lack of clarity and consensus in the academic hierarchy as to what the appropriate role for the teacher is and how the classroom should appear during the interaction with children. Changes need to be brought about on a systemic level, because the problem lies in the very structure of the system and not in particular organisations. Thus, one of the aims is improving the quality of the teachers. The quality is in terms of their professionalism, professional attitude and professional commitment towards children’s learning achievement and their professional improvement. Teachers must understand the nature of learning and of the learner. They must understand that learning occurs in many ways and learn to give importance to all forms of knowledge, since they form part of the overall mental make-up of the child. They must analyse the material provided to them, including the textbooks and the curriculum, in the light of the context of the child and try to incorporate elements which will be relevant to the child. They must endeavour to make the process of learning an enjoyable experience for the child, since these emotions will go a long way in motivating the child to learn further. (To conclude)

Anti-Wall St movement loses home, but not cause Sebastian Smith

NEW YORK: US authorities may have closed the camp that started the whole Occupy Wall Street movement — but protesters say their fight against economic injustice can’t be so easily shut down. The surprise night raid by New York police to demolish the movement’s most famous tent camp at Zuccotti Park in Manhattan left protesters without its symbolic headquarters. For almost exactly two months the Zuccotti Park encampment, a short walk from Wall Street, inspired people across the United States enraged about big business and a government seen as unresponsive to the economic crisis. The ruthlessly thorough operation in the dead of night underlined the authorities’ desire to see the back of the protest. Within hours, the last trace of the cramped tent village had literally been power-hosed away. But even as tired protesters wandered Manhattan in a fruitless search for a new base they were confident the movement itself would survive. “The idea will continue. It is bigger than Zuccotti Park,” prot-

est spokesman Bill Dobbs said. For sure that idea — tax the rich, make government accountable to regular people, and curb the power of the elites — seems likely to endure ahead of next year’s presidential election. But how will Occupy Wall Street movement promote it? Unlike the right-wing Tea Party, courted by the Republicans, Occupy Wall Street has no leaders or concrete agenda.

Activists rule by consensus in enthusiastic, but cumbersome general assemblies, meaning there is no easy way to predict future strategy. A judge backed a ban on pitching tents in the private area, ruling the demonstrators could gather but not camp or sleep there. Throughout the day, protesters played a game of cat-andmouse with authorities as they

sought to re-establish their camp a stone’s throw from Wall Street, the symbolic epicenter of a movement protesting alleged corporate greed which has spawned copycats in other US cities and abroad. But in the evening, police reopened the park and let the demonstrators back in one-byone, stressing they would not be allowed to stay there for the night. A test of strength is likely

Thursday, the start of the third month since the movement was born. “A day of mass action” has been announced in New York, with plans to march from squares to subway stations to city bridges. One of the movement’s big union backers, AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka, urged supporters Tuesday to “show your solidarity by attending a Nov 17 bridge action near you,” the Politico news site reported. However, some believe that Occupy Wall Street now has an opportunity to look beyond its battle for Zuccotti Park and to start thinking big. Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, called in the New York Times for the start of a “new progressive age.” “A new generation of leaders is just getting started,” Sachs wrote. Michael Kazin, a Georgetown University historian who has studied protest and social movements, said the Occupy movement is unique. “There have been other movements in American history that protested against economic inequality (but) no movement looks exactly like this,” he told AFP.

‘Made in Japan’ brand at crossroads Shingo Ito

TOKYO: The ‘Made in Japan’ brand is at a crossroads as more firms face a tough choice over whether or not to move production overseas to escape the impact of the relentless rise of the yen, say analysts. According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, some 46 percent of large manufacturers it surveyed in August said they would move production bases abroad if the yen stays around 76 yen against the dollar for half a year. Currently near 77 yen to the greenback, the unit’s strength risks causing the “collapse” of the Japanese auto industry, Toyota executive vice president

Satoshi Ozawa said last week. Toyota’s first half net profit dived 72 percent partially due to the impact of the strong currency. For the maker of the Prius hybrid, every one yen rise against the dollar can wipe tens of billions of yen from annual operating profit. In the year ended March, Toyota made around half of its cars in Japan, more than rival Nissan. The nation’s biggest automaker, along with other Japanese giants such as Sony, Mazda, Honda and Canon all reported recent quarterly earnings that saw profits eroded by the impact of the strong yen and the March disasters. A strong Japanese currency hurts the nation’s key export sector by making goods made in

I’m aware of concerns about industrial hollowing and borders have already been disappearing Japan less competitive abroad and cutting into repatriated overseas earnings. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has spoken of his fear of industrial “hollowing out” as companies threaten to take jobs overseas. Japan’s efforts to intervene in markets to weaken the yen have had little lasting impact. “Industrial hollowing is now more serious than in the past as Japanese firms are forced to move to secure profit,” said Tak-

unori Kobayashi, an economist at Daiwa Institute of Research. For semiconductor foundry and data storage firm Elpida Memory, the shift of 40 percent of the firm’s production to Taiwan is an imperative move as a high Japanese unit erodes profits. “Under this currency situation, we have to carry out (the plan) no matter what,” president Yukio Sakamoto said recently when the chip maker announced a net loss of $735 million in the first half ending September. Recent supply shocks caused by the March earthquake and tsunami have only helped accelerate the process, say analysts. Wacom, holding more than 80 percent of the global market for pen-input tablet devices, is

setting up a parallel component production base in China after the March earthquake and tsunami triggered power shortages and crippled component supplies at home. “In 10 years, our rivals will change from Japanese to Chinese,” said Kazuma Sekiya, president of Disco, a Tokyobased firm controlling 80 percent of the global market for machines that cut microchips. “Building factories in China means we will give our knowhow to our future rivals.” “I don’t think Japan will completely lose the status of a major manufacturing nation,” said Takahiro Sekido, chief economist at Credit Agricole Securities Asia in Tokyo.

Arab Spring in Kuwait?

MJ doc’s star witness fined

Thousands of Kuwaitis storm into Parliament demanding resignation of PM KUWAIT CITY: Thousands of Kuwaitis stormed parliament on Wednesday after police and elite forces beat up protesters marching on the prime minister’s home to demand he resign, an opposition MP said. The demonstrators broke open parliament’s gates and entered the main chamber, where they sang the national anthem in a country so far spared the ‘Arab Spring’ proreform revolts. “Now, we have entered the house of the people,” said Mussallam al-Barrak, who led the protest with several other lawmakers and youth activists also calling for the dissolution of parliament over alleged corruption. The group left after a few minutes. Police earlier used batons to prevent protesters chanting ‘the people want to remove the prime minister’ from marching to the residence of premier Sheikh Nasser Mohammad alAhmad Al-Sabah, a senior member of the ruling family. Witnesses said at least five demonstrators were injured and treated at the scene. Some activists said they would continue to camp outside parliament until the premier was sacked. It was the first political violence in the oil-rich Gulf state since December, when elite forces beat up protesters and

RABAT: The Arab world called on Wednesday for urgent action to protect Syrian civilians from an eight-month protest crackdown, giving President Bashar al-Assad three days to halt the ‘bloody repression.’ That came as a raid by army defectors on a military base highlighted the scale of the challenge to Assad at home, prompting the United States to warn that violence by the opposition is playing into his regime’s hands. Despite Syrian promises to the contrary, the embassies of Morocco and the United Arab Emirates in Damascus were attacked by pro-Assad crowds on Wednesday. With the foreign ministers in Rabat saying their patience had run out, the Arab League gave the Assad regime three days to halt violence or face economic sanctions, Qatar’s prime minister said.

LOS ANGELES: The star witness for Dr Conrad Murray, the physician convicted of causing the death of ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson, was fined $250 on Wednesday for disobeying the judge during the six-week case. But judge Michael Pastor ruled that Dr Paul White, an expert on propofol, an anesthetic given to the late pop star, faces no further action after he reportedly called the prosecution’s main expert witness a ‘scumbag.’ During testimony on October 31, the judge ordered jurors to leave the court while he admonished White for talking in front of the jury about conversations he had had with Murray. Shortly after the jury was brought back into court, White mentioned in his testimony that the judge had ordered him not to talk about certain things in front of the jury, triggering Pastor’s anger.

Bangkok’s snake hunter flooded with work BANGKOK: Bangkok’s most famous snake hunter piles the huge writhing python into a sack and bundles it into the boot of a taxi, before rushing across the flood-hit city to deal with another serpentine intruder. Sompop Sridaranop has been busier than ever since Thailand’s devastating floods reached the capital and sent snakes — as well as people — fleeing their usual habitat to seek out drier ground. “The snakes live in drain pipes and in empty grassy areas, and when these are flooded, they travel through the pipes to houses to find new places to stay,” the 57-year-old said. As a result, snakes are popping up where they are not wel-

come and Sompop is being bombarded with panicked calls from frightened residents. The python — three metres (10 feet) long — was caught by workers at a factory in Nonthaburi province just north of the capital, much to the relief of one frightened employee. “I was very scared. I didn’t dare to watch while they were catching the snake,” Pattaya Tasua told AFP as Sompop whisked the creature away. When his ‘Jingle Bells’ mobile ringtone alerts him to another roaming reptile, Sompop swings into action, throwing on his ‘Snake Hunter’ jacket and racing to the rescue. It’s a voluntary role he has done for more than 20 years

Snake catcher Sompob Sridaranop shows a capture, a poisonous and hot tempered large-eyed green pit viper

alongside his paid job as a messenger for the Thai marine department. He says he was inspired as a young man by a speech by the queen urging Thais to help one another.

A stint volunteering with local police led to his calling as a snake catcher — along with other adventurous sidelines including destroying wasps’ nests. The various bite scars on his

arms testify to his long service. “My wife has seen my snake bites so often, it’s normal for her. She worries but she understands,” he said. Pythons like the one at the factory are not venomous, but other poisonous species, particularly cobras, have been cropping up more frequently since the floods began usually at night and in outlying areas of the city, according to Sompop. And it’s not just snakes that are causing a stir. The snake hunter has been called out to catch water monitors, fearsome-looking lizards that are a common sight near the lakes and canals of Bangkok but have also started to creep a little too close to home for some.

Take your company to next level Postnoon News

HYDERABAD: Is it easy to run a company? Certainly, not. Yet, if a proper strategy is in place, the execution becomes simpler. It is with this motto, MasterClass put together the simple steps of strategizing. MasterClass will be conducting a day-long seminar on ‘StrategySimplified’ that helps entrepreneurs understand how to make and execute their companies’ strategies, according to Ambrish Chheda, chairman and managing director of MasterClass training and consulting. The seminar is scheduled at Ravindra Bharathi on Friday at 1.30 pm. As many as nine business and corporate leaders in the city will share their experiences on how to take the company to the next level. Chheda says StrategySimplified is a methodology launched for the first time in India

to help organizations of any type, any size, and any industry develop a four-page simplified strategic plan and execution with key performance indicators and milestones calendar, rather than 50 to 100 page report or presentation. “There is a dire need of simplified and redefined business strategy and execution plan to which everyone in the company can easily align to. It is increasingly felt across sectors in industries worldwide that strategy is not something

that only the top bosses or senior management would keep to themselves to improve bottom-line,” said Chheda. He emphasized the need for entrepreneurs to choose the right business that they can do. A wrong choice will doom the business in spite of the acumen of the entrepreneur. He cites Vijay Mallya acquiring Kingfisher Red as an example for this. He says Mallya cannot run a low-cost and no-frills airlines. It has its bearing on his entire airline business. The manifestation of any idea or strategy is not done within the closed walls of a boardroom. It is executed by the workforce of the organisation. Therefore, dissemination of this knowledge in a simplified manner becomes critical and so is its understanding by each and every employee of the organization.

Banks urged to innovate HYDERABAD: G.Padmanabhan, Executive Director of Reserve Bank of India, has urged the banks that it is high time they innovate and introduce more technology products and services to serve their customers better, specially the tech-savvy

new generation. The Institute of Development and Research in Banking Technology and South Indian Bank recently conducted an executive round table called “beyond core banking” at South Indian Bank in Kochi. V A Joseph, managing di-

rector and CEO of South Indian Bank welcomed the gathering. Suma Varma, regional director, RBI, Trivandrum, R. Sambamurthy, Director, IDRBT, Abraham Thariyan, Executive Director, South Indian Bank also participated.

A call that could change your life Anisha Motwani

P

esky callers and SMSes are a subject of great concern and debate, irritating many of us. Obviously there is absolute certainty that we do not need another flat, another credit card, another spa deal, or a personal loan. However, the unfortunate fallout of this invasive bout of incessant tele-calling is the way our defence systems have grown up in such a manner that at the third second “I am busy” is the standard response. There is, however, a call that could actually change our lives, if we managed to give it the time of the day beyond the standard 10seconds. It’s a call from an insurance advisor.

The role of the insurance advisor is undermined by strong stereotypes of someone who is trying to talk you into something that you don’t want or need, someone who is there to cheat you and what not. Strange as it may seem, but today many relationships that the advisors today pride themselves on started with a great dose of serendipity or dogged perseverance. The agent’s role is like the soldier in a war. He is the face of the war, business in this case. A war is won by soldiers, not by generals plotting it in safe war rooms. Likewise, we plot the strategy, design products and empower our agents to make successful product sales. And, the way a soldier protects our borders for us to live in peace, the insurance agent provides

protection to the families of those who are insured. The fact that the insurance penetration in the country is 4.1 per cent of GDP is largely because of the agents’ drive to go far and wide to insure people and protect lives. It is one of the most understated achievements of the agents; their role in providing insurance protection to over 10.14 crore policyholders. The insurance advisor actu-

ally knows more about the subject matter than us. The agent has undergone training to take out the magic from these plans. And he actually could make it happen. Till date, I am yet to meet a normal person who can claim with confidence that he or she has a crystal clear idea on how to plan his/her financial need. Talking to an insurance agent could change the degree of financial illiteracy. It’s the insurance advisor who can actually get you to face some unpleasant truths of your life .i.e we have placed more importance in planning the next holiday rather than what will happen when we do stop working one day? What would happen if, anything untoward happens? The true benefit of engaging with an advisor is unfortunately not going to be fully realised in

the next 10 seconds. It’s perhaps 12 years hence when chottu goes to college or when you are actually rocking on that rocking chair in Goa 20 years from now or the person who could be calling him could be your wife in the unimaginable event of anything happening to you. It is not an easy job being an insurance advisor and many would tell you that it is one of the most challenging careers you can take on. Yet, it is also a very fulfilling job which one gets to realise with time. So the next time a call comes through take an extra deep breath and take a decision whether being busy is what you want to be.

Woods and Scott in Presidents Cup showdown 2011 Presidents Cup team competition featuring the United States and Internationals begins today

US team captain Fred Couple (C) speaks to Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson during a practice round for the President's Cup golf event at the Royal Melbourne golf course, in Melbourne Robert Smith

MELBOURNE: Tiger Woods will face Adam Scott in an intriguing match-up on the opening day of the Presidents Cup two weeks after a racial slur aimed at the American by the Australian’s caddie. Woods will team up with Steve Stricker for the United States while Australian Scott is playing with South Korea’s K.J. Choi for the International team in the last of Thursday’s six foursomes. It means former world number one Woods will come face to face with Scott’s caddie Steve Williams, who carried Woods’s bags for 13 of his 14 major titles before being sacked earlier this year. Williams earlier this month referred to Woods as a “black arsehole” during an awards dinner in Shanghai. He subsequently apologised to Woods for

the comment and they shook hands. “I think it’s great for the tournament. It needed to be done,” Internationals captain Greg Norman said at Wednesday’s pairings announcement. “It played out the way it played out. There wasn’t any premeditation by it. “I think at the end of the day, the guys in that last group will be the consummate professionals and go out and play the game of golf representing their International team and the US team the way they should do.” US team captain Fred Couples said the Woods-Scott face-off would be an exciting match on the opening day of the biennial teams event. “We did not plan anything. But I think it worked out awesome for everybody involved to have Adam and Tiger play,” Couples said.

“As we said all along they are still very good friends and I think it’s an exciting match.” Woods, who only got into this year’s Presidents Cup as the captain’s pick after slipping outside the world’s top 50, won four points with Stricker in the US win in 2009 in San Francisco. S Korean fans demand coach’s ouster SEOUL: Angry fans called on Wednesday for the resignation of coach Cho Kwang-Rae after South Korea suffered a stunning 1-2 defeat to underdogs Lebanon in the third round of regional World Cup qualification. The official website of the Korea Football Association (KFA) was flooded with critical postings, with one suggesting a peti-

tion campaign to press the KFA to dismiss Cho. Newspapers also lambasted South Korea for playing what Chosun Ilbo daily called a “game of sleepwalkers”. “Let’s start a signature collection campaign to fire the coach,” wrote one fan, Min Hong-Ki, on the KFA website. “We have to get rid of him

when we still have a chance. Otherwise, we won’t be able to survive in the qualifying rounds,” he said, noting Lebanon are ranked 115 places below South Korea. “Do you still put trust in Cho who keeps saying the team has lost because it has no Park JiSung and Lee Young-Pyo?” he said. South Korea’s star striker Park and agile defender Lee

have left the national team. With the current team under Cho, South Korea are highly likely to miss the Brazil World Cup in 2014, Min said. “Brother Kwang-Rae, I give you a red card. Get out!” another fan, Eo Jin-Kwon, wrote on the website. A third fan, Maeng Young-Seok, said: “I am just lost for words... we have lost 2-1 to a

team whom we had beaten 6-0. Aside from the result, the game was also bad. We had no goal in open play but only a penalty.” South Korea and Lebanon are now level on points at the top of Group B. Kuwait’s 2-1 win over UAE on Tuesday kept alive the Kuwaitis’ hopes of preventing one of the top two of progressing to the next stage of qualifying.

Beady remembrance Koreans turn loved ones cremated ashes into beads

A

s a result of changes in traditional South Korean beliefs, more and more people are choosing to have their cremated loved-ones’ ashes turned into decorative beads they can keep around. 10 years ago, 6 out of 10 Koreans who died were buried, according to Confucian beliefs to respect the dead and visit their graves. But, due in part to western influence, but also to a strong government campaign to convince people to switch to cremation, Korean culture changed drastically. In a small, densely populated country like South Korea, space is very important, so in 2000, the country’s government initiated an

aggressive pro-cremation campaign that included pamphlets, radio broadcasts and press statements, This culminated with a law passed in 2000, requiring anyone who chose to bury their dead, to remove the grave after 60 years. Largely as a result of these facts, only 3 out of 10 Koreans were buried last year. The increasing popularity of cremation spawned various other services, like ashes-tobeads companies, which have been steadily growing in the last few years. One of these companies, Bonhyang, uses very high temperature to melt the ashes until they crystallize and can be shaped as beads, during a 90-minute process. This way the remains are clean,

don’t smell bad, don’t mold (like Bae Jae-yul, the company’s owner, claims ashes do), and people can take them along anywhere. The most frequent color of the beads produced by Bonhyang is blue-green, but pink, purple and black are also in demand. According to Bae, the technology was first used in the 90s, by a meditation organization, but the process wasn’t perfect so it didn’t catch on. He saw its potential, bought the technology and spent years perfecting it before launching it on the market, once more. He claims Bonhyang has an edge over the competition because it only uses a person’t remains to create the beads, whereas its rivals

LEXINGTON: Lexington County School District Three is investigating after a first-grader complained about having to rub her teacher’s feet. A district representative said the district has launched a full investigation, appropriate action has been taken and the situation has been rectified. But that’s not nearly enough for some parents. “She admitted to the children rubbing her feet,” said Brenda Norris. “Just the thought of it.... They immediately sent her home, but she’s back there today.” Norris is far from satisfied

after her 6-year-old granddaughter, who is in first grade, came home from Batesburg-Leesville Primary School last Wednesday to say she was “tired of rubbing her teacher’s feet.” “‘Does she take off her socks and shoes?’” Norris recounted asking. “‘Grandma, she wears flip-flops.’” Norris refused to name the teacher but said she would select students to massage her feet during class time. “My granddaughter has nightmares, she cries,” said Norris. “She said, ‘I have three wishes, Grandma. One of them was

add minerals. Turning ashes into beads costs around $900. Ashes-to-beads businesses were also launched in the United States, Europe and Japan, but they weren’t very successful because most people

Teacher accused of making first-graders rub her feet not to go to school today.’” Outraged, Norris took to Facebook and found at least half a dozen parents who said this also happened to their kids. The district says the situation has been handled. “I don’t trust the system at all now,” said Norris. “I can’t trust the system. I’m afraid for her to go to school.” Norris said the punishment is unacceptable since the teacher still has her job, and her granddaughter’s trust has been destroyed.

heating had become a real issue at a middle school in Whuhan, China’s Hubei Province, so the teachers came up with th idea of having kids take tests outdoors, on the school playground. In most Western countries, children and their parents would have surely shouted ‘violation of human rights’ if forced to attend classes outside, but at one Chinese learning institution this is seen as an effective way to thwart cheating attempts. Apparently, teachers at the Sihuang Middle School, in Wuhan, had become so desperate to effectively crack down on organized cheating rings, they finally decided the best

thing to do was to have students take tests on the school’s playground, meters apart from their colleagues, and under the vigilant eye of supervisors. “In the playground there is more room and no pupil can stretch out and reach another pupil’s desk or whisper an answer to a friend,” a school official said. Children sit far apart from each other, with teacher patrolling between their desks, and supervisors placed on high ground watching for any suspicious movement. Looking at these photos, I have to say I had it pretty easy, back in school. Not that I’m encouraging cheating, that’s wrong kids!

anosized gobs containing a blood clot-dissolving drug can seek out trouble spots in the body and break down blockages responsible for heart attacks, Japanese researchers reported at a meeting of the American Heart Association. The microscopic packaging seems to improve the drug’s potency and might limit its main drawback — a risk of internal bleeding — by focusing its effect at the clot. Although the technology has been tested only in pigs, some doctors find the early results intriguing. “This could be a tremendous step forward,” said Roger Blumenthal, a cardiologist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. If it tests well in people, he said, this controllable form of the clot-busting drug, called tPA, might be a boon for heart attack patients in remote areas that lack hospitals equipped to deliver the highest standard of care for heart attacks. About half of people for whom heart attacks are fatal die before reaching a hospital and getting angioplasty, in which doctors thread a balloon-tipped catheter up to the

heart to prop open blocked coronary arteries with mesh cylinders called stents. With every minute that passes after a heart attack begins, part of the heart muscle is damaged by lack of blood. “It’s one thing to have a heart attack in a metropolitan area,” Blumenthal said. “But sometimes a catheterisation lab may be four hours away.” A safer form of tPA, a drug that has largely gone out of use for heart attacks in the United States because of its internal bleeding risk, could play a role In such rural areas, he said. The Japanese team, led by cardiologist Yoshihiko Saito of Nara Medical University in Kashihara, tested a form of tPA made safer by packaging it in a coating of gelatinebased nanoparticles that prevent tPA from releasing in the blood stream. Tests in mice showed that the nanoparticles were three times more likely than regular tPA to attach to clots, because the tiny blobs stick to a common clotting compound in the body that standard tPA doesn’t bind. The researchers then injected either the nanoparticle drug or standard tPA into 30 pigs in which the scientists had induced blood clots. Once the nanoparticles had arrived at the clot, the

researchers burst the tiny blobs with ultrasound waves and released the tPA cargo at the clot. After 30 minutes, blood flow through obstructed vessels improved by 90 percent in pigs getting the nanoparticle drug but by only 10 percent in pigs getting standard tPA. There was also less stray tPA in the bloodstream afterward with the nanoparticles. The new technology might expand the range of people who could administer tPA, said Robert Bonow, a cardiologist at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. Paramedics typically don’t give tPA in the United States, even to heart attack patients, because of the bleeding risk. “In theory, this would be safer,” he said. People with pulmonary embolisms might also benefit from the nanotechnology if it succeeds in further tests, said cardiologist Vincent Bufalino of Midwest Heart Specialists in Naperville, Ill, a cardiology practice. In those patients a clot obstructs blood flow to the lungs. Doctors use tPA for some strokes that arise when a clot jams an artery supplying the brain with blood. But that medical scenario wasn’t tested in this study.

iving vitamin D to patients after they’ve survived a heart attack or a close call lowers their levels of two compounds implicated in heart disease. Yoav Arnson of Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba, Israel, and colleagues identified 50 patients who had a heart attack or an episode of unstable angina — a cardiac red alert. All the patients were immediately started on standard drugs and half were randomly selected to also get 4,000 international units of vitamin D daily. After five days, the vitamin D group showed a decrease in the inflammation-causing compounds called vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 and interleukin-6. VCAM1 is central to atherosclerotic plaque formation and IL-6 is broadly associated with coronary risk. Patients not getting vitamin D showed clear increases in both compounds during the five days. This could explain some of the vitamin’s cardio-protective properties, Arnson reported.

Clean teeth: More than good-looking

P

eople who get the plaque scraped off their teeth may be less likely to have a heart attack, Emily Chen of Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan reported. Chen and colleagues tracked the health of more than 100,000 people, roughly half of whom reported getting their teeth cleaned by a dentist or a dental hygienist at some point. The heart attack rate in these people over seven years of follow-up was one-fourth lower than in those who didn’t report any cleanings. Poor oral health leading to gum disease has been tied to chronic infection and heart disease, but few studies have explored the

prospective benefits of preventing it. Teeth cleaning provided only minimal protection against stroke.

Wearable heart zappers do the trick

S

mall heart defibrillators worn by nearly 5,000 people in the United States deliver some needless shocks but correctly fix potentially lethal heart arrhythmias in about nine out of 10 times in which they are needed, Vincent Mosesso Jr of the University of Pittsburgh reported. These external defibrillators, which deliver a shock if they sense an irregular heartbeat, are given to people with very weak heart function who are awaiting a heart transplant or who have a condition that prevents them from getting an implanted defibrillator. The researchers combed through records of more than 14,000 devices in use over three years and found that 185 people received a shock in response to an irregular heartbeat, with the heart returning to normal rhythm 91 per cent of the time.

Vitamin C shows benefit

L

ow intake of vitamin C has been associated with high levels of Creactive protein, an inflammatory protein implicated in heart disease. A new study of 212 heart failure patients found that those with low vitamin C and high CRP had an increased risk of dying or of their condition getting worse. Eun Kyeung Song of the University of Ulsan in South Korea and colleagues measured CRP levels in the patients’ blood, and the participants — nearly half of whom had moderate to severe disease — completed a four-day diet questionnaire. Those data indicated more than one-third of the patients had vitamin C deficiencies.

Anti-cholesterol shot lasts a month

A

single injection of an experimental drug can lower LDL, the bad cholesterol, for up to 30 days, Clapton Dias of Amgen reported. The drug works by inhibiting a natural compound in the body called PCSK9 that pushes up circulating LDL levels. Dias and colleagues treated 42 healthy adults with various doses of the drug by intravenous injection or a routine shot. Fourteen other volunteers received a placebo shot. LDL levels monitored for 113 days showed no change in the placebo recipients but decreased by 64 per cent within two weeks in people getting the highest dose of the drug called AMG145.

Nothing endures but change.

S

ometimes it feels like there’s a little gnome pounding away inside your head at other times it might feel like your skull is contracting. But whatever it is, a migraine attack can often leave you feeling incapacitated. In fact, waking up with a headache is frustrating and stressful. Usually a migraine attack manifests in the form of a dull or pounding ache on one side of the forehead accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and sound. It normally lasts from 24 to 72 hours and can affect a person’s productivity at work thanks to its debilitating nature. When a migraine hits life comes to a standstill. The constant throbbing headache can strike quite unexpectedly or be triggered thanks to a host of factors. “Often people get

Manage that migraine n Ensure that you have a prop-

er 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night. So avoid night shifts as far as possible. n Eat your meals at regular intervals. Delays between meals or skipping them can trigger a migraine attack. n Avoid triggers like too much sunlight exposure, use sunglasses or an umbrella when you step out. n A doctor can prescribe preventive medication to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. These are safe with no side effects. However, they must be taken under medical supervision. n When you suffer a migraine attack and the pattern seems different from usual do visit your physician to rule out anything more serious like an aneurysm. n Of late, doctors have also begun using Botox to help ease the pain of migraine.

Heraclitus

This aura is bad for your head migraine due to hereditary factors. But there are also a range of environmental factors that can trigger migraines. For instance, bright lights, travel, pollution, phonophobia etc can trigger headaches. Other factors like skipping meals and sensitivity to some foods can also give rise to migraine attacks,” says Dr Sudhir Kumar, senior consultant neurologist at Apollo Hospital. Usually one or more of the above trigger factors can spark off a migraine attack that can only worsen with exposure to light, heat and working on a computer. In extreme cases, people with migraines might also find that they are prone to nausea. Women usually find themselves under migraine attacks before their

menstrual cycle. Doctors say that this could be attributed to hormonal factors as girls before reaching their menarche and women after menopause rarely face such problems. “In fact, it has been noticed that women are more prone to migraine attacks than men. Out of 100 people in an OPD with migraine problems nearly 80 of them would be women. While hormones have been blamed for this higher incidence of migraines in women, the exact cause has not been pinpointed yet,” reveals Dr Sudhir. According to a study conducted by the United Nations it was found that women worldwide are usually under more stress than men,

which could be one of the precipitating factors for more women being prone to headaches than men. The best way to avoid one of those nagging episodes is to steer clear of precipitating factors. “Usually people would know what kinds of food can trigger an attack, so avoiding those can help. Staying out of the sun and avoiding loud noises can also help,” says Dr Pramati Reddy, a consultant physician. “Also before a migraine actually sets in, a person will experience what is known as an ‘aura’. Hence, it is advised that they take medications right at the onset of this aura to prevent or reduce the duration of a migraine attack,” she adds. People often say that eating something sweet or drinking coffee can help alleviate the pain. “Migraines usually occur because the trigeminal nerve which is connected to the carotid artery (this supplies blood to the brain) is affected. Low levels of glucose affects the functioning of the brain hence people claim that when they eat something sweet it eases the pain. People who fast might also find that this is a trigger for a migraine attack. So sugars and caffeine are said to ease the pain. In fact, some of the drugs recommended for treatment contain some amount of caffeine,” says Dr Sudhir.

HPV vaccine do you or don’t?

Dr Divya T Sudarshan

How can we prevent HPV infection/ transmission? The easiest would be abstinence (or maybe the toughest! depending on how old you are!). Condoms both male and female ones, local microbicides also help and so does the HPV vaccine. The advantage of the vaccine is, it sensitises your body to the virus, and works like all the other vaccines against viruses like measles, mumps, rubella, rabies that we are already familiar with. Who do we vaccinate?? Till now it was said the vaccine works best on younger girls and women so the main groups were from 1030 years. It may help to know that more than 45 per cent of the girls in the USA and Europe have been given the vaccine. In fact the maximum HPV infection is seen between 20-30 years, probably due to more experimentation and freedom. But recently it has been found that even older women up to the ages of 45 with repeated vaginal infection, white discharges and abnormal pap smears will benefit by these vaccines. So mothers who keep asking about the vaccination for their daughters should probably consider it for themselves, if they have repeated vaginal infections. In fact we don’t always insist on an HPV test before the vaccine as many people assume. Do you need the vaccine? They say a fool knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. The cost of the vaccine (around Rs 8000 for 3 doses over 6 months) may be daunting, but if you are looking at the health benefits you give yourself... it’s priceless! So think about it, research it, ask your doctor and then get it!

ome people are born with a silver spoon, while others have their initials engraved on crockery while they are still in the womb. The latter is the mark of royalty, the fortunate few, whose feet only graze the lofty plains of mediocrity. Nawab Mohammed Rafiullah Khan is a direct descendant of the Royal family of Nizams and also the executive director of Viewpoint Advertising Private Limited. He established his dream company in 2009, which is a now a known name in innovative outdoor advertising and the Digital Signage Industry. He is well known in the industry for his creative ideas and cost effective campaigns. His father Nawab Mohammed Ahmedullah Khan is the successor of Nawab Khudrath Nawaz Jung, and his mother, Sahibzadi Zarina Shehzadi is the Nizam VII’s grand daughter. As glamourous a life as it may seem, the life of a royal is filled with expectations and, of course, responsibilities. “Since our childhood, my elder brother, Nawab Mohammed Habibullah Khan, and I had been entrusted with the responsibility of carrying forward the royal customs and traditions

passed down to us by our family. Our childhood was not like that of others, it was filled with restrictions. As children we always wondered why we couldn’t be like other kids our age. We were not allowed to play outside the royal courtyard nor had any of our school friends come over. But now that we are all grown up, we realise that what we missed was for our own good and we don’t regret it all,” says Nawab Rafiullah who along with his brother was home-schooled. The Nizams were well known for their lavish lifestyles, exorbitant wealth and unnamed luxuries. Mohammed Rafiullah Khan himself nurtures a fascination for clothes and cars. “I have an extensive collection of garments which include sherwanis, shirts and coats, each of them paired with their matching jewellery, diamond studded buttons, shoes and watches. I also have a good collection of perfumes, not just one of each, but dozens of almost each item. At the moment I have a Volkswagen, a Honda Civic and a Chevrolet Optra. I also have an observant eye for antiques and gem stones,” he says, going on to explain his passion for food. “I am a foodie. My passion for food is reflected in my blood. I love cooking, but only traditional royal delights. My passion for creating an exceptional dining experience is something that I have honed since childhood,” he exclaims with pride. His passion for food is shared by his family as well and they usually spend time dining out. The Nawab like any other is a simple man at heart. The simple pleasures in life is what helps him to unwind. “I love gardening or listening to ghazals and timeless qawwalis. Soulful music is what soothes my nerves after a hard day at work.”

Begum Iqra says that her husband is a hardworking person who is very passionate about his work. “He is an optimist and believes in making do with what he has and that always leads him to something greater,” she says.

Fondly called Baby Elfo by his mother because of his big build, Nawab Rafiullah is the youngest in the family and so was always pampered. “He was the most pampered of the two but he is also very possessive about his family. He is someone who likes to maintain a proper balance between his personal and his professional life,”she adds.

HOPING

for an Oscar nomination Dam 999 directed by Sohan Roy is yet to be released but has managed to raise curiosity both in India and in the international film circuits. We talk to the man behind the sensation Taniya Talukdar taniya.t@postnoon.com

H

ow many engineers have we seen in the past turning film-makers? Quite a few we must say and Dam 999’s director, Sohan Roy, is another name on that list. A marine engineer by profession, Sohan, now runs a company called Aries Marine which is into marine engineering, consultancy and much more. “I wanted to make Dam 999 as a tribute to the 1975 Banqiao Dam disaster in China that claimed 250,000 innocent lives. “The dam showed in the film is the one in Kerala which is at seven times higher altitude than the one in China. I took the thread from there but we are not revealing the name of the dam,” informs Sohan about his first release. Though we have got to know that the dam in question is the Mullaperiyar Dam which is operated by the Government of Tamil Nadu according to a 999-year lease agreement made during the erstwhile British colonial rule.

Sohan and Rajit Kapoor

“The lease was signed before independence,” shares Sohan going on to add, “The dam is in a critical situation which is shown in the story through the main characters. People there are living in fear.” The dam is under dispute now not only because of the precarious state that it is in now but also because of the river water sharing agreement between the two states. “It has now become a political issue and there are constant arguments over this dam,” offers the passionate film-maker who was looking for a story to tell when he came across this topic that intrigued him and he decided to go ahead and share it with the world so much so that the script of Dam 999 has now been incorporated in the Oscar library. “This is the first time that a script has been included in the Oscar library even before the film has released. “The film might just end up as India's official entry to the Oscars, the nominations are yet to happen though we expect at least one Oscar nomination for

the film. It has been a great achievement for us so far,” says a visibly excited Sohan. Dam 999 revolves around characters portraying nine different human emotions. These nine lives are affected by the dam. “The story is about three marine friends who are returning home to Kerala oblivious of the fact that a disaster is awaiting them. Each is coming home for his own reasons. Like one of them is suffering from a serious disease and is headed to Kerala

for an ayurvedic treatment,” explains Sohan. A few of them die in the disaster when the dam breaks down and how some of them go about evacuating the area goes on to form the major part of the story. “This movie can be a lesson in a way for people as to what they should be doing in the face of such a disaster,” offers Sohan. The film has an ensemble star cast with actors from different industries coming together to work on one project.

Vinay Rai from Tamil cinema, Rajit Kapoor from Hindi cinema, Megha Burman from Bengali cinema and a few more actors from different industries form a part of the star-cast. “I have always wanted to make a film in India which would be world class, I wanted people to see that India can make films which is on par with the rest of the world in terms of technology. We have used the best of technicians who are national award winners and our hopes are definitely high,” Sohan announces. A major chunk of the film was shot at Ramoji Film City and the film is also entering the Guinness Book of World Records for showing the biggest floating object ever on screen. Talking about some of the memorable incidents from the shoot of the film Sohan says, “The ship shown in the film has a Pakistani crew which consisted of soldiers and though the film had an Indian cast there was a great bonhomie on the sets when the soldiers cooked and fed us like we were one of them. We worked like a family.”

UTV bags film rights of Revolution 2020

C

hetan Bhagat’s books have always found a fancy in Bollywood filmmakers and his latest bestseller Revolution 2020 will also be converted into a movie as the writer has tied up with UTV Motion Pictures for its big screen adaptation. UTV Motion Pictures has acquired the movie rights of the book, and it would be made into an epic drama, narrating the story of three friends — Gopal, Raghav and Aarti, who struggle to find success and love in Varanasi. Now he is excited about the big screen version of Revolution 2020, which hit the stands in October this year. The film takes a look at corruption in the non-elite institutes in the Indian education sector with a love story in the backdrop.

“Yes, UTV finally managed to seduce me. A great offer, immense excitement about the story and a wonderful team with a track record makes me feel they can do justice to Revolution 2020, a story very close to me and the readers’ hearts,” Bhagat said in a press statement. According to UTV Motion Pictures CEO, Siddharth Roy Kapur, the book was extremely engaging and topical, which is why it made sense to strike the deal. Bhagat tweeted Wednesday morning about the development, and also asked Twitterati to suggest names of actors for the three key roles in the film. “Happy to announce the Revolution 2020 movie deal with UTV. Tell@utvmp who’d make a good Gopal, Aarti & IANS Raghav!,” he tweeted.

Indian cinema should be liberated: Ketan

ational award winning filmmaker Ketan Mehta, whose Rang Rasiya courted controversy for its skin show, feels it’s time for people to liberate their minds. “You shouldn’t be asking this after witnessing the response that it has received at the Kolkata Film Festival. I think as a grown up democracy we are free people and

its time to liberate our minds not just the economy,” Mehta said when asked how he felt that Indian cinema is not ready for nudity. Mehta was in Kolkata for the special screening of Rang Rasiya at the 17th Kolkata Film Festival. The film was screened at an over-crowded theatre. Based on the 19th century Indian painter Raja Ravi Verma,

ctress Nandana Sen is overwhelmed at the response that her film Rang Rasiya received at a special screening at the ongoing 17th Kolkata Film festival. The film was screened at an over-crowded theatre and those who couldn’t get a seat watched the entire movie while standing. “I am simply overwhelmed at the response that the audience of Kolkata has given to my film. The audience was fantastic. People from every walk of life came to the film festival to watch the movie. Several people even watched the whole movie standing as they couldn’t manage to get a seat,” said Nandana . “It’s really fascinating to see so many people have come to see my movie,” added the actress.

Directed by Ketan Mehta, Rang Rasiya is based on the 19th century painter Raja Ravi Verma, played by Randeep Hooda, and his muse Sugandha Bai, played by Nandana. The movies shows how Ravi Verma painted Sugandha Bai partially nude in his portraits which later kicked a storm fuelled by religious priests. It also shows how pictures of goddess painted by Ravi Verma had courted controversy during that period. Asked what she feels about the late painter MF Hussian, who also faced similar protests for drawing nude pictures of Indian goddess, she said, “It really hurts that such a legendary painter had to die in self-imposed exile outside India. It’s very painful.” IANS

Hilton gives stray dog a 50-pound treat! S

ocialite Paris Hilton’s love for dogs is not unknown — but she went out of her way to order a steak worth 50

pounds for a stray dog on a Bali beach. Hilton told chefs at a posh restaurant in Bali to cook the dog dinner, reports a website. She posted the dog’s picture on social networking site Twitter, and posted, “Saw a starving stray on the beach of the restaurant. Made me so sad. So we ordered him a filet mignon, he loved it!”

The celebrity heiress wants to help stray dogs on the Indonesian island. “I’m researching the Internet to see what I can do to help,” she added. To raise funds for their welfare, Hilton even shared a link to an international fund for Animal Welfare story about animal relief work in Bali. IANS

I am still trying to find myself Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

A

lot of people in the film industry, especially those who work behind the camera are shy to talk about their work, but this cinematographer does not seem to be one of them. “People ask me silly stuff like how was it like working with so and so actor or director. It gets boring after a point of time,” says Vijay K Chakravarthi. He has to his credit films like Bommarillu, Oy, Koncham Ishtam Koncham Kashtam and his latest Oh My Friend. So we ask him the only logical thing to get the conversation going. Why does he use bright colours and lighting in most of his films? “I actually usually try and avoid using bright colours. What you see on screen are pastel colours which are quite pleasant,” he clarifies and goes on to add, “Mostly, I follow colour characters. In Oh My Friend we used mostly colours like white and blue for Chandu (Siddharth) and Siri (Shruti Haasan) to signify purity, for Navdeep it would be more of red and Hansika is always in Pink because she’s always insecure. It’s just an attempt to have a psychological

Vijay K Chakravarthi, the cinematographer of Oh My Friend talks about his work and what led him to cinema impact. Whether people think the same or not is beyond our control. But everything depends on the script.” He vehemently says that even the director, irrespective of his personal choices, has to adhere to the script. Ask him about his influences and he reveals that he is still mesmerised by the paintings of Johannes Vermeer, a 17th Century Dutch painter. “If I can reproduce 5 per cent of what Vermeer had painted 400 years ago, then that will be my greatest achievement. He drew a lot of his paintings using source light, a method which I use quite often in my films. But the lighting pattern depends on how many characters are in the frame.” His interest in cinematography dates back to early ‘80s when he saw Balu Mahendra's debut film in Tamil, Azhiyatha Kolangal. “Till that point of time, I was a lot into writing and Tamil poetry. And when I saw Balu Mahendra's film my interest slowly drifted towards photography and then gradually to cinematography,” he recalls.

In his career, he has worked on just nine films out of which six happen to be in Telugu. “I joined Arthur Wilson's team as an assistant cameraman and my introduction to Telugu cinema happened with Arya,” he says. He tells us an interesting story about his introduction to Dil Raju on the sets of Arya. “Although Ratnavelu was the chief cinematographer of Arya, I shot 50 per cent of the film because he was busy with some other assignments. That was the first time when I really enjoyed the process of making a film. Arya had a wonderful team and I met Venu Sriram, the director of Oh My Friend, for the first time there. I still remember the time when I asked someone who the boy standing next to the camera was since he was quite curious to know what was happening on the sets. That's when someone told me that the boy was Dil Raju, the producer of the film. I could sense his passion for cinema

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2011 even then,” he reveals. In the past few years he has worked with four debutant directors like Bommarillu Bhaskar, Anand Ranga, Kishore Kumar and Venu Sriram. Is that a mere coincidence that he has been working with mostly his own friends? “I never plan anything for future. For me living in the present is far more important and I feel lucky that debutant directors want to work with me. I share a very good rapport with my friends. When I was working on the sets of Bommarillu, we used to play cricket near Tank Bund and discuss film scenes. It's fun when you work with your close friends. For me the journey is more important than the destination. Good things happen only when you enjoy the process,” he answers. So what would be his advice to aspiring cinematographers? “I am still an aspiring cinematographer,” he grins adding, “Look, I am not that big a name to give advice to anyone. But I personally feel like people are more eager to learn the technology

27

and how to handle the equipment. I would suggest that aspiring cinematographers should read a lot of literature. That would really help them in visualising scenes or stories. The technology is just the body and you can learn it very easily. But for a creator, the soul is far more important and no one can teach you about that.” His interest in literature started when he was very young. He confesses that his father, who was a Tamil teacher in their hometown near the foothills of Kodiaks, has been his biggest source of inspiration. “Whatever I am today is because of him. I can never forget the incident which happened when I was four or five years old. One day it was raining and my father took me to the door and asked me to tell him what was happening. I told him that it was raining. He replied, ‘For a poet this would be a poem, for a painter it would be a painting and for others it’s just rain. So, who are you?’ I am still trying to find out who I am,” he says.

Sri Rama Rajyam ticket sold for $6,000

A

n ardent fan of Balakrishna shocked everyone by buying a ticket of Sri Rama Rajyam for $6,000! He reportedly lives in New Jersey, USA and this astronomical sum for one ticket has come as a big surprise even for trade pundits. Of late it has become a trend in the US to auction tickets for movie premieres; however a ticket being sold for such a large amount might very well be a record. Balakrishna and Nayanthara are playing lead roles in this film which opens in screens on November 17. Bapu has directed the film and Venkataramana has written the script. Saibaba has produced it and Ilayaraja has composed the music for this film.

Oh My Friend does good business in Nizam area

S

iddharth’s latest film Oh My Friend has managed to draw massive crowds especially in the Nizam area. Although the initial response was mixed, the film’s team which went on a tour to select theatres was surprised to see that the audiences in single screen theatres were appreciating the film more than the mul-

tiplex crowds. The film continued its good run even on weekdays and the buzz in trade circles is that the film might collect around Rs3 crore in the first week itself from Nizam. Venu Sriram made his debut as a director with this film. Siddharth, Shruti Haasan, Navdeep and Hansika have played the lead roles in it.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
