According to him, the popular joke today is that of Congress ka haath, gareeb ke saath. The image of leaders looting public wealth must go.

“The people of the State voted for the Congress in 2004 as they believed that the party would stand by poor people. But with rampant corruption by party leaders and bureaucrats, especially taking away lands from poor people and corruption in implementation of welfare programmes, led to a feeling that Congress government is looting them,” Rao rued. Asked if he’d prefer a woman leader to head the AP government , Rao said, “No Indira Gandhi is possible in AP.” The two women Cabinet ministers are facing charges of corruption, he pointed out. And, what’s the possibility of a change of guard soon? “That, I believe, is already on the high command’s mind. It would (must) happen after the presidential elections.” Putting down his professional scalpel and gloves, he takes on an astrologer’s garb and predicts that the next CM would be a leader from Telangana.

he rocks are glaring. And, so are the cacti and the 50 varieties of plants around the rocks. A favourite of both children, to play a game of hide and seek, and of adults, the Rock Park has a pride of place in the City as a refreshing niche. The 650 square yard plot in Methodist Colony, Begumpet is perhaps the most well-maintained community park in the City. But it is relatively unknown except to its residents. That is a good thing though: even after almost nine years, the park still seems as fresh and as new, for had it been very popular, it would’ve lost its character. The party’s Politburo member Yanamala Rama Krishnudu said that there was need for enhancing the reservations for the BCs from 27 per cent to 52 per cent as per the mandal commission report. But he resigns to the fate saying it is something “we can’t help.” That the State government, tied up with its political crisis, is showing no interest towards this matter is evident. he whole world is going to be in Hyderabad 100 days from now and yet the City is hopelessly unprepared for it. The world convention of biological diversity (CBD) slated for October 1-19 will bring some 12,000 participants from 190 countries to Hyderabad. There would also be heads of state from at least 12 countries and it is billed to be the biggest event after independence. How prepared are we? Enquiries reveal that the AP State government which ought to have taken the lead to help the GHMC with funds and moral support is dozing as it is caught in its own web of inefficiency and political crisis. It is two months since the Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and sought `1,028 crore for the event. No information has been forthcoming if Delhi plans to divest part or full of the amount sought, and the time is running out. “What use it would be even if

the funds come at the last moment?” wondered GD Priyadarshini, additional commissioner on works and coordination at GHMC. The Corporation, entrusted with the prestigious task, is yet to get a rupee. Whatever works of road maintaining it has undertaken is with its own funds and with the help of the corporate sector. “We are still optimistic the government will chip in,” she sounded

Jagan’s victory march crashes TRS T-party POLITICS

he flamboyant Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is in a deep soul searching these days. The party knows too well that the win in Parakala is not noteworthy. For Telangana supporters, a victory by the margin of 1562 votes is as good as a defeat. Party sources admit that scraping home in Parkala following the crushing defeat in Mahbubnagar constituency is no consolation at all.

What went wrong? The party satraps say the division of votes between the BJP and the TRS has been the major cause for the party’s poor show. Had the BJP’s 9160 votes gone to the TRS, the scene would have been different. What the party now admits, albeit privately, is that YSRC’s tearjerker over the Jaganmohan Reddy’s arrest (courtesy an unthinking Congress) was the tableturner. TRS leaders have started to think of ways to strengthen the party ahead of the crucial 2014 elections. The Telangana Joint Action Committee thinks that, to avoid vote-splitting, the party should strike a balanced deal with the BJP, which, too, is vociferously striving for a T-state. However, the TDP is said to be shedding its inhibitions about forming a new state and wants to have its T-arm before the next general elections. This could worsen matters for the TRS. BJP leader Sugunakar Rao told Postnoon that political analysts say the bypolls have proved that the notion of TRS that it has patent right over separate Telangana issue was wrong. Similarly, political analyst Telakapalli Ravi said all political parties except the CPM are supporting separate Telangana issue. “And the people are aware of this fact,” he said. The writing on the wall is clear. TRS has lost its monopoly over T-votes.

And, mayor Mohd Majid Hussain is no less shrill in his denial of funds for the CBD. The mayor is on record saying that the corporation, strapped for funds, is in no position to shore up so huge a financial support as the CBD demands. However, he has climbed down from his earlier stance of “will not spend a paise from the GHMC kitty,’ to “at the most `50-70 crore.” Additional commissioner

All the world at Sunday bazaar For students and book-lovers alike, the Sunday book bazaar at Abids proves to be a boon One would often wonder the survival of this market against trends. But the community here strongly believes that theirs is a completely unique market and has no fear of competition. “Ours is a very unique business and we have no fear from the big market. We sell only second-hand books and hence we have our own target audience,” says Mohammed Ghaus, who has been into this business since the last 30 years. More than the day of the market, which is Sunday, shopkeepers work very hard from Monday to Saturday searching and accumulating these books. They collect books from various parts of the City and also procure

books from Mumbai and Delhi. “We work during the weekdays to collect the books. It’s a very tedious task, sorting and arranging the book is a bigger task,” claims Bhanu Murthi, shopkeeper. Walking further down into the by-lanes gives the feeling of an all new world. The whole environment gives a feeling of late 80s or early 90s. The bazaar has a great collection of all genres of magazines, right from 1995 up to 2011. Despite all these brownie points, book lovers need to build tremendous patience to look for that particularly elusive publication because there is really no order in the way the books are placed in most shops.

Hyderabad hosts a second-hand books bazaar every Sunday. The commercial complex that houses Hollywood Shoes on the Abids main road is where it begins, and this continues to the GPO. Just like any other books bazaar, book lovers can hunt for fiction, technology, non-fiction, management, classic, comic books, magazines, home décor, cook books, spirituality, self-development, and arts and crafts books, apart from a host of others. This market also has educational books. “From KG to PG, we have everything,”

says Ram Babu, who has his stall set up as early as 8am. From youths to senior citizens, they all stride towards Abids for their pick. “Senior citizens come to buy old and language specific books, and youngsters come here for novels and old books,” says Azar Khan, a stall owner. The USP of this market is classic and rare books. One can find the oldest of the oldest Tinkle or Readers Digest and that to just for just `10. In the new age of books being available on the iPad and tabs, there is still patronage for second-hand books sold on roadside, and they are a big hit.

he Metro rail works are seen as a potential security threat during the monsoon. The digging, people fear, would prove a trap. Metro’s works along the Miyapur-L B Nagar corridor is gathering pace. About 2 to 2.5 metres of earth digging have been taken up along the rail corridor especially in areas like Punjagutta and the Gandhi Bhavan-Nampally stretch. A good look at the work being done on the main arteries of the City raises doubts and lowers expectations about the timing of the project and poses questions about security and the validity of the works being undertaken. But the Metro rail authorities seek to quell fears about the status of the project. Authorities at the Hyderabad Metro Rail told Postnoon about the current undertakings at various places in the City. Assistant executive engineer Bheemanayak said, “These diggings are what we call “utility probing”. These probes are conducted to check for underground power cables, water and sewage pipes, phone lines etc.” The utility probes are dug

only to an extent of 2 to 2.5 metres and are promptly covered back with M30 or M40 concrete mix. This entire stage of conducting and clearing a utility probe takes a week. “We take all necessary precautions including barricading and fixing reflective

warning signs to indicate the ongoing work,” Bheemanayak said. When asked about the kind of difficulties the department is facing over working in the monsoons, a confident Bheemanayak replied, “We are not deterred by the coming weather.” “Infact, the production of piers and foundation laying for the second stage of the Metro rail are going on parallelly,” he said. While the probe pits in Jubilee Hills and Punjagutta areas have been cleared and

covered, work on the Gandhi Bhavan-Nampally stretch is yet to be finished. The Metro Rail project which is divided into six stages has been under constant criticism, with the latest news of delays costing an additional 20 crore, because of legal hurdles in land acquisition, leaving a bad taste in the mouth of the people. While cost recovery may be made through a fare hike or a dent to the exchequer, the Metro continues to be awaited with caution and slight cynicism.

Greece gets EU breather BERLIN: Eurozone countries extended Sunday a hand of compromise to Greece after the victory of parties supporting the country’s international bailout, signalling some flexibility on the painful reforms. “There can’t be substantial changes in the engagements” undertaken by Greece in the bailout deal. “But I can imagine we discuss again a delay” in achieving the targets, German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle said. The job, spending and wage cuts required under the 130 billion euro ($165 billion) bailout were a key issue among voters in Sunday’s Greek parliamentary election, with all parties calling for a relaxation of the terms if not outright cancellation of the deal. Germany has been one of the most hardline eurozone nations and insisted that Greeks have to implement the agreed deal if they want the bailout funds needed to keep the country from going bankrupt and possibly exiting the euro. Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated Greece’s probailout conservative leader Antonis Samaras on his election victory and told him she was now confident Athens would abide by its European pledges. “She stated that she would work on the basis that Greece will meet its European commitments,” said a government statement recounting her phone conversation with Samaras, the leader of Greece’s New Democracy party. French finance minister Pierre Moscovici said eurozone finance ministers would soon release a statement on how they will approach the situation in Greece. RBI leaves rates unchanged

he Reserve Bank of India on Monday kept key lending rates unchanged. The re-purchase rate remains unchanged at 8 per cent, which automatically keeps the reverse re-purchase rate at 7 per cent. The RBI said that since the last rate cut, global macroeconomic indicators have deteriorated and that the headline inflation numbers are far above the comfort range. “Since the RBI’s annual policy statement in April, global macroeconomic and financial conditions have deteriorated. At the same time, the domestic macroeconomic situation too raises several deepening concerns,” the apex bank said. In April, the RBI had cut re-purchase rate by 50 basis points to 8 per cent, which automatically impacted the reverse re-purchase rate which dropped to 7 per cent from 7.5 per cent. IANS

In fact, Manmohan is among the first leaders Mexican President Felipe Calderon had scheduled for a bilateral engagement on the margins of the summit. The two sides had elevated their ties to what is officially called priviledged partnership when Calderon visited New Delhi in 2007.

At 79, Manmohan Singh is also the oldest leader in the G20 grouping, which was primarily formed at the level of finance ministers and central bank governors to find ways out of the economic crisis that had gripped the world in 1999. It was raised to summit level in 2008. Trade between India and

Mexico has been on the rise. From $2.95 billion in 2008, it jumped to $4.15 billion in 2011, as per official estimates with the Indian side. Some 25,000 Indian tourists also visited this country last year. Even though the Indian diaspora in this country is no more than around 2,000 people,

India ranks 55th on foreign cash in Swiss banks

NEW DELHI: Indians’ money in Swiss banks may have risen for the first time in five years, but they account for a meagre 0.14 per cent of total foreign wealth deposited there — putting India at 55th place globally for such funds. The total overseas funds in Switzerland’s banking system stood at 1.53 trillion Swiss francs (about `90 trillion) at the end of 2011, which included 2.18 billion Swiss francs (Rs 12,700 crore) belonging to Indian individuals and entities. The UK accounted for the largest share of little over 20 per cent, followed closely by the US with about 18 per cent. This is the latest data disclosed by Swiss National Bank (SNB), Switzerland’s central bank. Among the top-ranked jurisdictions, the UK and the US were followed by West Indies, Jersey, Germany, Bahamas, Guernsey, Luxembourg, Panama and France, Hong Kong, Cayman Islands, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Saudi Arabia and United Arab of Emirates. Soul-cleanser Ganges to get cleaned up A

spiritual group here is conducting a survey on how best to clean the entire 2,525-km Ganges, the holiest of all rivers for Hindus but highly polluted today. The Gayatri Parivar has already begun cleaning the river in patches all across the country but it feels this is not enough. The entire stretch has to be given a facelift -- at one go if possible. “It will be a hugely challenging task, but this is our dream,” explained Kedar Prasad Dubey, a former bank officer who is one of the key persons involved in the project. Dubey said the survey would find out the number of ghats along the river, the extent of pollution and the number of volunteers needed for what would be an unprecedented enterprise. “We will also create public awareness on the necessity to keep the Ganges clean and litterfree,” Dubey said. The Ganges originates at

Gangotri in Uttarakahand, at a height of 12,769 feet above sea level. It passes through UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal states in India before entering Bangladesh where it flows into the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges basin is the most heavily populated river basins across the world, with over 400 million people and a population density of 390 people per square kilometre. The river is also one of the most polluted in the world, threatening not only humans but also over 100 fish and 90 amphibian species. The government’s Ganga Action Plan is widely considered a failure, angering many Hindus who worship the river as a goddess and are upset that the authorities do not seem to be bothered. The Gayatri Parivar, Dubey said, has rich experience in cleaning rivers as well as temples. On June 5, some 2,500 activists

joined hands here to clean the Ganges at Haridwar. On May 31, more than 2,000 men and women teamed up to clean all 10 ghats in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier that month, about 5,000 people took part in cleaning the river Saryu in Ayodhya, also in UP. Thousands of Gayatri Parivar members and others clean the

615-km Tapti river (which flows from Betul in MP to Surat in Gujarat) every month, Dubey said. Similarly, while the Narmada river between MP and Gujarat is cleaned every two months, a similar cleaning operation takes place for the Shivana river in Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh, he said.

In every campaign, out came tonnes of waste and litter that should have never been dumped in the rivers in the first place: old clothes, polythene and plastic, footwear, bottles, rotting food, even animal carcasses. “It is so sad that people have no respect for our rivers,” Dubey said. One of the biggest clean-up operations by Gayatri Parivar took place at the famed Rameswaram temple in Tamil Nadu in January 2011 when 650 people from 11 states gave the shrine and its surroundings a thorough wash. “I too was there,” Dubey said. “We formed human chains and took out 25 tractor-trolley loads of garbage from the temple area and four times more than that from surrounding areas. “Our people feel that it is high time both the banks of the entire Ganges was cleaned,” he said. “That’s what we want to do.” IANS

Indian American appointed to top Yale position WASHINGTON: The prestigious Yale University today announced the appointment of Indian American academician Anjani Jain to a top university position. Beginning July 1, Jain will join Yale School of Management as senior associate dean for the full-time MBA programme. Jain has served in multiple leadership roles at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, including 10 years as vice dean of its full-time MBA programme. His appointment comes at a time of expansion and opportunity for Yale SOM. As senior associate dean for the fulltime MBA programme, Jain will focus on Yale’s flagship full-time MBA programme, assuming lead responsibility for admissions, career development, and student and academic services. Heat wave kills 16 in Uttar Pradesh

At least 11 people died of extreme heat conditions in the parched Bundelkhand area, two in Barabank and three in Lucknow. According to police, the three deceased showed signs of heat stroke and were found lying on pavements or by the roadside in different localities. Temperatures touched the 4547ºC in different areas.

Adult male ants kill rivals after their birth WASHINGTON: Adult male ants can single out their rivals as soon as they are born and then launch an chemical attack to eliminate them, a new study has found. Researchers at University of Regensburg and IST Austria found that male Cardiocondyla obscurior ants constantly patrol the nests to ensure that they are able to bite or chemically tag a rival as soon as he is born. Chemically tagged ants are then quickly destroyed by workers. When ants emerge from their pupae, or eclosion, they are vul-

nerable to attack because their exoskeleton has not yet hardened to protect them and their mandibles are also too weak to bite an attacker. And a rival is easy to spot because male Cardiocondyla obscurior ants are diphenic, either winged or wingless. The dominant wingless male ant, therefore, keeps an eye out for newborn winged ants. The researchers investigated the behaviour of male ergatoid Cobscurior ants in response to newly pupated males and females, as well as their interaction with developing pupae.

Lead study author Dr Sylvia Cremer from IST Austria said: “Older ergatoid male ants are able to distinguish pupae containing females by their chemical scent from those containing males. “Pupae containing males are often bitten while those containing females, or winged males disguised as females, elicit a mating response. “However, the chances of mistakenly killing a female or worker possibly prevents older males from attempting to completely destroy all rival males before they emerge from their pupae.”

YANGON: Once known as a rebel rapper with a penchant for electric guitars and dragon tattoos, Zayar Thaw now aims to be an agent of change as a parliamentarian in the stronghold of the Myanmar army that threw him in jail. The 31-year-old is a rising star in Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, which made a dramatic comeback in April elections after two decades in the political wilderness, becoming the main opposition force in parliament. Around the World Pro-bailout parties triumph in Greece ATHENS: Greece’s two main pro-bailout parties clinched enough votes to form a government in knife-edge elections on Sunday, as world powers pushed for a new cabinet as soon as possible to ease global fears. “Today the Greek people expressed their will to stay anchored with the euro,” said Antonis Samaras, the leader of the conservative New Democracy party which preliminary official results showed in the lead with 30.04 per cent. “We ask all political forces which share the aim of keeping the country in the euro... to join a government of national unity,” he said. “The country does not have a minute to lose.” Samaras pledged to honour Greece’s commitments but said he wants to ease the terms of an unpopular EU-IMF bailout deal which has imposed harsh austerity measures in return for a multibillion rescue package. Mursi’s campaign director Ahmed Abdelati confirmed the projected victory. At a press conference he said Mursi had garnered 52.5 per cent of the vote to 47.5 percent for his rival, ex-prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, with the ballots from nearly all of the country’s 13,000 polling stations counted. There were scenes of jubilation at Mursi’s headquarters, where the candidate himself thanked Egyptians for their votes in brief remarks. Police Captain Randy Deanda told that King was found “unresponsive” at the bottom of the pool at his home in Rialto, California after a 5.25 am (1225 GMT) call from his fiancee Cynthia Kelley. Jack Osbourne diagnosed with MS

ccording BBc reports the Osbournes have revealed that son Jack has multiple sclerosis (MS). The TV and music star family said Jack was diagnosed from tests taken when he lost 60 per cent vision in his right eye earlier this year. He told Hello! that after first feeling angry and upset he has now taken an attitude of “adapt and overcome”. MS is an incurable neurological condition that damages the nerves and affects the transfer of messages around the body. Jack Osbourne, 26, said he had chosen to speak out in order to raise awareness of the condition. He added that the support of his fiancee Lisa Stelly was helping him to stay positive. MS can have a wide range of symptoms, including tiredness, temporary blindness, loss of co-ordination and speech difficulties.

1,50,000 Afghan refugees to leave Pak ISLAMABAD: The UN refugee agency plans to help in the voluntary repatriation of some 1,50,000 Afghan refugees from Pakistan this year. Pakistan continues to host about 1.7 million refugees. Most of them are from Afghanistan. Since March 2002, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has facilitated the return of some 3.7 million Afghans from Pakistan. It is unpredictable and affects everyone differently. One in five sufferers has a benign form with mild attacks and no permanent disability, while another 15 per cent have a progressive disease that steadily worsens. Not spending within their income is what caused this financial fiasco. It’s true it is not easy adhering to austerity measures for long. However, what other feasible option do they have but to abide by the condition set by those who are lending them money. Only spending cuts and tougher austerity measures can see them through this crisis. Drivers’ negligence Half the road accidents that happen can be avoided if the drivers were a bit more careful. Hyderabad is infamous for its horrible road sense. No tolerance, no patience and no etiquette mark an average Hyderabadi driver. There have been countless occasions where I came close to death being run over by RTC buses. These are the ones that have scant regard for rules. I guess the fact that they are hired by the government gives them arrogance. tar gazers around the world watched with excitement as the Earth’s sister planet Venus trekked gracefully across the sun’s disk for over 6 hours earlier this month. It was a special event because no one alive today is likely to be around when the next Venus transit happens in 2117. Slightly smaller than the Earth, Venus is the Earth’s nearest planet and comes as close as 40 million kilometres to us. It has no moon, no magnetic field and no water. The Earth’s 23.5° tilt causes our seasons, but Venus is tilted at a mere 3° which means there are no seasons on the planet. Its atmosphere has 96% carbon dioxide while its thick sulphuric acid cloud cover reflects 85% of the light falling on it. Over 20 space missions visited Venus since 1964 — the first Venera spacecraft sent by the Soviet Union was crushed by the impossibly high atmospheric pressure of 92 times that on the Earth’s surface! NASA’s Mariner 10 made a fly by Venus on its way to Mercury as did Cassini-Huygens which flew by Venus twice, in 1998 and 1999, on its way to Saturn. NASA’s Pioneerand Orbiter missions delved deeper into the planet’s secrets and the sophisticated Venus Express sent by the European Space Agency in 2006 sent valuable information about cloud cover, volcanic activity and lightening on the planet. Interestingly, seen from its North Pole, Venus has a clockwise spin whereas the rest of the planets in the solar system spin counterclockwise. Further, its spin is so languorous that it takes 243 earth days to complete one rotation while it orbits round the sun in 225 earth days — a day on Venus is longer than a year on our planet! Venus revolves around the sun in a near perfect circular orbit at a distance of 109 million kilometres while the Earth revolves in an elliptical orbit at an average distance of 149 million kilometres. In the course of their predictable movements Venus and the Earth are sometimes on the same orbital plane. Such alignment of planes happens in pairs of events separated by eight years and these events themselves happen once in 105 or 121 years. If Venus passes between the Sun and

A transit is really like a solar eclipse, but solar eclipses are spectacular and occur at least two times a year, while Venus’ passage across the sun’s disk is rare and hardly noticeable. So what was all the excitement about? Venus has a special place in human culture. The Maasai of Africa named it Kileken and have a charming tale about The Orphan Boy who comes down to Earth to help an old man. It is called Shukra in Hindu mythology. Son of Bhrigu, Shukra was the teacher of the asuras and he learnt the Sanjivani mantra which is the key to immortality. Shukra presides over Friday and has an enmity with Jupiter. The ancient Egyptians mistook this celestial object for two different bodies: the Morning Star and the Evening Star. It was Pythagoras of Samos who pointed out in the 6th Century BCE that Phosphoros, the Bringer of Light and Eosphorus the Bringer of Dawn were the same — but he believed that this ‘wandering star’ orbited the Earth. The Greeks then named it Aphrodite, their goddess of love. Inheriting their mythology from the Greeks, the Romans named it Venus, after their own Goddess of Love and Beauty. These phases, Galileo concluded, could only be explained by the Copernican idea that Venus was orbiting the Sun rather than the Earth. That laid the foundation of the new astronomy. Venus transits in 1761 and 1769 allowed astronomers to observe it from different parts of the world and calculate the distance between the Earth and the Sun by using a system of triangulation. This distance is now known as an Astronomical Unit and these calculations allowed the first understanding of the true scale of our solar system. Afterthousands of years of ruling legend and lore, since its first observed transitin 1639 Venus has come to occupy a prime place in the history and future of science.

very trip to the staff room meant a glimpse of the college dark room for Reginald Johnson, a physics student. The sight of the rarely used dark room set his mind thinking. Thought soon led to action— the formation of a college photography club which allowed the members to discuss, use the dark room facility, and aid those members who had few resources but an ardent interest. He could now borrow expensive equipment like enlargers, develop his own pictures at ease, and share ideas with like minded people. The year was 1974. Now, 38 years later, Johnson fondly remembers how the club helped him put to use his passion —photography. College student clubs are entities of zealous minds and voluntary labour. Student clubs may not always be recognised officially by the college. Nonetheless, they are a platform for exposure, work and socialising. “College clubs are the best

place to interact with like-minded people,” says Sneha Yamarti, who was an active member of a club in St. Francis College. Interest oriented, these student clubs might be anything, with Eco clubs being the most common. St. Xavier's PG College, Hyderabad has a grand collection of student clubs ranging from a Quiz Club to an eco club, called Greenlands, and even an Investment Club (Money Makers). Each department here, has a club devoted to their subject. The Social Management department operates Smile, the Psychology Department, Psycon, the Mass communication department has Drishti. “I initially joined a lot of clubs to feel more like a student,” says Shruthi E, who was in the organising committee of a number of clubs in Christ College. The sentiment is completely understandable. The feeling of belonging, an essential part of college life, is a great boost to personal development.“Being part of the clubs at Francis was a lot of fun and more than anything else you

These dedicated members leave with a cache of newly learnt skills — time management, handling people, subtle skills. In colleges like St Francis, where the clubs are very active, they take care of everything from planning and organising events, stalls, cultural programmes, to single handedly managing college fest, funding, etc. The students’ dedication is evident in their effort. Most clubs have a core committee elected by the students. In Christ College, members of this committee are selected based on skills displayed handling tasks set by teachers. The commerce committee selection, for instance, usually includes planning a virtu-

al campaign. While such a meritocracy might come with disadvantages (bad communication, jealous classmates, etc) it certainly ensures that the talent is in the right place, for commendable work. Often times these clubs are established to feed rather unusual interests. The Hyderabad Central University boasts of a bird watcher's club. They may also exist in slightly different forms, like the student organisation in Loyola Academy which works for human rights issues. These may not fit into the traditional definition of a student club, but share the structure and functioning of one — that of bringing together like minded people with a cause. “Everyone in the club is highly supportive. As a member, you receive a lot of encouragement,” Shruthi smiles. Student clubs have come to be integral to the very functioning of the college by increasing the quality of education, inspiring and maintaining passion in the courses chosen, and enormously stepping up the appeal of the institution.

he scorching summer has abated and it’s time for those much awaited monsoons. What it’s also time for, is to guard against a host of monsoon related ailments that rear their ugly heads around this time of the year. And for a City that is notorious for its dirty water bodies and largely tropical weather, the risk of mosquitorelated ailments like malaria, chikungunya and dengue goes up considerably. In fact, according to a study published in the medical journal Lancet, nearly 1.2 million across the world succumb to malaria every year. Researchers reviewed the malaria mortality data from 1980 to 2010 and found that 1.2 million people were killed by the illness in 2010, which is twice more than what the toll was thought to be. In India alone, a whopping number of 46,800 Indians had succumbed to the illness.

While experts across the world are crying themselves hoarse about the incidence of malaria, according to State government data nearly 352 Hyderabadis had died due to malaria in 2011. “We do see a spurt in the cases of malaria, chikungunya and dengue during the monsoons each year. While chikungunya seems to affect the older generation slightly more,

malaria and dengue cases are seen across age groups and genders,” says Dr J Anish Anand, consultant physician at Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills. “The primary reason for these cases are the stagnation of water and unhygienic conditions during the monsoons. The low levels of awareness among people about the need to curb mosquito breeding and

maintaining cleanliness is also a cause,” says Dr Amita Bhandarkar, a Bangalore-based physician, “On an average nearly 20 per cent of the cases during the monsoons would be either malaria or dengue.” Treatment for these ailments is usually symptomatic. “We first run a blood test to rule out any other infection or ailment. When it comes to chikungunya there is a lot of joint pains so we prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to deal with it. The joint pains can last up to several weeks. Malaria takes around 5-6 days to get cured unless there are complications. If it is the phalciparum type of malaria it could be dangerous and sometimes the patient can either go into a coma or it could affect the organs,” explains Dr Anish. Dengue however, is riskier with the chances of low platelet count and shock due to low blood pressure being high. Sometimes platelet transfusion may be required. “The key is to maintain hygiene conditions and keep your surroundings clean.

I often hear complaints from my daughter's teachers that she is distracted and hyper. She is 10-yearsold and teachers say that she is either staring out of the window, is constantly fidgeting or engrossed in conversations. She just can't seem to pay attention and this is telling on her report card. How do I encourage her to get a little more serious without pressurising her ? Your child appears to be dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to the DSM IV TR, symptoms include: difficulty sustaining attention doing any task, not paying attention or making careless mistakes, not listening when spoken to, failing to finish schoolwork or chores, poor at organising, avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort, loses possessions often, easily distracted, fidgeting with hands or feet, leave their seat when remaining seated is expected, running inappropriately, have difficulty playing quietly, talk excessively, blurt out answers before questions are completed. Children with this disorder cannot pay attention or be calm because their brain does not allow them. Thus, a combination of medication and behavioural counselling is helpful. Children diagnosed with ADHD have a hard time without medicine, so it’s best to have the child evaluated by a proficient medical professional. In addition, a counsellor can help the child by teaching them ways to pay attention, minimise distraction and cope with it. new study showed that vitamin D with calcium can increase one’s lifespan. Vitamin D with calcium has been found to extend the life of elderly people, says the new study. Researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark found that elderly people who received vitamin D with calcium supplements were nearly 10 per cent less likely to die within three years than those who were given placebo pills. The findings were based on data taken from eight clinical trials, reported

Each study had about 1000 participants, 90 percent of whom were women. “In my view, a nine percent reduced mortality in the general population of elderly is of major importance,” study author Lars Rejnmark told Reuters. “Except for stopping smoking there are not many other known interventions that are capable (of) such a reduction in the risk of death.” This was the largest study ever done on vitamin D and mortality. he Food and Drug Administration has approved a new vaccine against meningitis meant for children as young as six weeks old. The FDA approved Menhibrix, a combination vaccine for infants and babies that prevents meningococcal disease and haemophilus influenza, according to the Associated Press. “With today’s approval of Menhibrix, there is now a combination vaccine that can be used to prevent potentially life-threatening Hib disease and two types of meningococcal disease in children,” Karen Midthun, MD, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement. Reuters reported that the FDA had rejected MenHibrix twice in the past, but GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of the vaccine, said it had resolved regulators’ questions about the vaccine’s efficacy. According to the FDA website, meningitis can be life-threatening. Bacteria can infect the bloodstream causing sepsis, or attack the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The FDA warns that without vaccination, children younger than two are susceptible to these serious illnesses. The symptoms of meningitis can be difficult to spot as they mimic those of the common cold. Symptoms include fast heart rate, change in mental state and a stiff neck. About 4,100 cases of bacterial meningitis occurred in the United States each year from 2003 to 2007. Dr Len Friedland, vice president of clinical and medical affairs for Glaxo in North America, told Reuters that meningitis is rare, but can still be devastating. “It presents to the doctor when a child just looks ill, and within 18 to 24 hours, they’re on the deathbed. How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Field of play Handball is played on a 40m long and 20m wide court. The goals are 3m wide and 2m high. The court is divided into two halves, with each goal surrounded by two 'D' shaped areas. The inner D is called the goal area, which only the goalkeeper may enter.

The basics Played on the largest court of any indoor ball sport at the Games, Handball features two teams of seven players passing and dribbling a ball. The aim is to throw the ball into the opposition’s goal. The goal is protected by a goalkeeper. Only the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area in front of each goal. Players may jump into this area when attempting a shot at goal but must release the ball before landing. Matches consist of two 30minute halves.

Competition format At London 2012, both the men’s and women’s Handball competitions begin with a preliminary phase: In this group phase, teams receive two points for a win, one for a draw and nothing for a loss. At the end of the group phase the four best teams in each group qualify for the knockout rounds, starting with the quarter-finals, where the winners enter the semis. The winners of the semi-finals eventually go head-to-head for the gold medal.

Officials Two referees oversee each game. They are assisted by a local timekeeper and scorekeeper, two IHF officials and an IHF Match Supervisor.

The Handball Ball The ball must either be made of leather or a synthetic material. It is not allowed to have a shiny or slippery surface. As it is intended to be operated by a single hand, the official sizes vary depending on age and gender of the teams. Resin is used to improve ball handling.Though not officially regulated, the ball is usually resinated. The resin improves the ability of the players to manipulate the ball with a single hand. Some indoor arenas prohibit the usage of resin since many products leave sticky stains on the floor.

SAN FRANCISCO: Webb Simpson of the US came from four shots back to win the US Open at San Francisco’s Olympic Club on Sunday, overtaking a bunch of big names to win his first major title. The 26-year-old from North Carolina, in just his second US Open, battled back from two early bogeys to grab four birdies in five holes from the sixth and then parred his way down the rest of the back nine for a gripping win. Simpson closed with a 68 and a one-over total of 281, one stroke clear of countryman Michael Thompson (67) and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell (73). A further stroke back in a five-way tie for fourth place were Americans Jim Furyk (74) David Toms (68), Jason Dufner (70) and John

Peterson (70) along with Ireland’s Padraig Harrington (68). Simpson was the ninth straight first time winner in the majors and he was the 15th different winner in the last 15, underlining once again the current strength-in-depth of world golf. “It was nerve wracking,” he admitted. “I know what kind of players they are (Furyk and McDowell), both have won Majors. “I expected both of them to do well coming in. I thought even though Graeme had a 25 footer, it was probably going to hit the hole or have a good chance.” “I couldn’t be happier than I am right now.” It was day when birdies were rare and survival was the order of the day as a cold mist and spotty rain drifted in from the adjacent Pacific Ocean to compound the difficulties of the

The 30-yearold was defaulted from the Queen’s final for angrily kicking an advertising board at a line judge which left the official suffering a gashed and bloodied leg (above).
