Surgeon takes scalpel to Congress Dr Shankar Rao, in his inimitable style, diagnoses ills afflicting the Congress in AP and writes out a prescription of bitter medicine POLITICS Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

“A

rre kya bataoon,” former minister and Congress leader P Shanker Rao, who is responsible for initiation of CBI enquiry into the disproportionate assets case of YS Jagan Mohan

Reddy by the AP High Court, runs his fingers on his shiny pate. “I said before election what was in store for our party. Nobody listened.” A medical practitioner, Dr Rao has, in a talk with Postnoon, penned three remedies to save the ruling Congress from total annihilation. n Remove Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana from their posts with immediate effect. n Hand over the reins of the party and government to leaders who are clean and zealous to rejuvenate the party. n Float the slogan “Congress ka haath garib ke saath.” Explaining, Dr Rao tells in between numer-

ous telephone calls, “These two people (Kiran and Botsa) are responsible for the defeat of the party. The Congress vote bank has come down from 38 per cent in 2004 general elections to 18 per cent during these by-polls,” Rao fumed. “The votes YSRC got are Congress votes. Can you forget and forgive that? Now, the State government and the party need an effective and popular leader immediately. This is the most important need of the hour,” Shanker Rao said. The outspoken doctor whose acerbic tongue has a quality to cut steel, said he’d love to go with Indira’s slogan. “We must appropriate and popularise the slogan, Congress ka haath, gareeb ke saath . According to him, the popular joke today is that of Congress ka haath, gareeb ke saath. The image of leaders looting public wealth must go.

“The people of the State voted for the Congress in 2004 as they believed that the party would stand by poor people. But with rampant corruption by party leaders and bureaucrats, especially taking away lands from poor people and corruption in implementation of welfare programmes, led to a feeling that Congress government is looting them,” Rao rued. Asked if he’d prefer a woman leader to head the AP government , Rao said, “No Indira Gandhi is possible in AP.” The two women Cabinet ministers are facing charges of corruption, he pointed out. And, what’s the possibility of a change of guard soon? “That, I believe, is already on the high command’s mind. It would (must) happen after the presidential elections.” Putting down his professional scalpel and gloves, he takes on an astrologer’s garb and predicts that the next CM would be a leader from Telangana.

Nature at its simplistic best The Rock Park located in Methodist Colony, Begumpet displays a fine balance of natural rock formations and a variety of plants N SHIVA KUMAR Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com

he rocks are glaring. And, so are the cacti and the 50 varieties of plants around the rocks. A favourite of both children, to play a game of hide and seek, and of adults, the Rock Park has a pride of place in the City as a refreshing niche. The 650 square yard plot in Methodist Colony, Begumpet is perhaps the most well-maintained community park in the City. But it is relatively unknown except to its residents. That is a good thing though: even after almost nine years, the park still seems as fresh and as new, for had it been very popular, it would’ve lost its character. The charm of the Rock Park lies in its design. The rocks have

ongress party leader V Hanumantha Rao said intra-party feuding, not rivals, had defeated the party in the polls. Rao said that the welfare programmes are not being explained to the people. This is the failure of the governmental machinery as much as the leaders’ failure. He demanded that the Congress party should apologise to the people for the irregularities that occurred during the rule of late YSR. Referring to the win of the YSRC, Rao said that Vijayamma shed tears at every election meeting. Her tricks worked and generated sympathy. He also added that he would retire from active politics if YSRC wins future elections on the sympathy wave.

Simplicity gives this park a character. The park was brilliantly designed by the then director of urban forestry department, N Chandra Mohan Reddy. Contrary to what one may think, the park is much more than rocks and plants. There is a walking track around the park. On entering the park, once cannot miss a board which talks about the history of rocks and their importance. And slowly as your eyes move around, you

might just catch a glimpse of the orchid trees, and when it is time for them to bloom, they are a spectacular sight. The park perimeter is lined with pebbles, adding a touch of class. So well maintained the park is, that even outside the park walls, there are plants neatly growing and blooming. Until 2003, the park was lying in neglect. But after a few colony members got together, including D Gita and YV Ratnam and with the help of the GHMC, the park took shape. It is a matter of pride for them. “Although I don’t come here every day, I pass by the park and admire it every time. We occasionally even hold our colony

The party’s Politburo member Yanamala Rama Krishnudu said that there was need for enhancing the reservations for the BCs from 27 per cent to 52 per cent as per the mandal commission report. He said that if necessary, the Constitution should be amended to change the rule that reservations should not exceed 50 per cent. He also demanded that Muslims must be provided 10 per cent reservations as per the recommendations of the Ranganatha Mishra commission recommendations. Rama Krishnudu said that the Congress has been doing injustice to the BCs whenever it came to power.

Guests are here, where’s the host? With the date for the CBD summit approaching, the City shows no sign of being prepared to welcome its guests Dhananjay Reddy is worried on another count. At least part of its road works that cost over a `100 crore would be a waste since the well-laid roads for the CBD would be demolished by the metro rail in most instances. But he resigns to the fate saying it is something “we can’t help.” That the State government, tied up with its political crisis, is showing no interest towards this matter is evident. At stake is the City and the country’s prestige.

PK Surendran surendran.pk@postnoon.com

T

he whole world is going to be in Hyderabad 100 days from now and yet the City is hopelessly unprepared for it. The world convention of biological diversity (CBD) slated for October 1-19 will bring some 12,000 participants from 190 countries to Hyderabad. There would also be heads of state from at least 12 countries and it is billed to be the biggest event after independence. How prepared are we? Enquiries reveal that the AP State government which ought to have taken the lead to help the GHMC with funds and moral support is dozing as it is caught in its own web of inefficiency and political crisis. It is two months since the Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and sought `1,028 crore for the event. No information has been forthcoming if Delhi plans to divest part or full of the amount sought, and the time is running out. “What use it would be even if

COUNTDOWN TO 11TH CBD

the funds come at the last moment?” wondered GD Priyadarshini, additional commissioner on works and coordination at GHMC. The Corporation, entrusted with the prestigious task, is yet to get a rupee. Whatever works of road maintaining it has undertaken is with its own funds and with the help of the corporate sector. “We are still optimistic the government will chip in,” she sounded

positive but the tone and tenor of her betray desperation. Several arterial roads are to be taken up for works before the world marches in. More, it is learnt that what the GHMC does now is the usual premonsoon and post-monsoon maintenance of roads and infrastructure. Nothing special for the CBD. This is a fact not known to the people outside the corporation circles.

Jagan’s victory march crashes TRS T-party POLITICS

Postnoon news feedback@postnoon.com

T

he flamboyant Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is in a deep soul searching these days. The party knows too well that the win in Parakala is not noteworthy. For Telangana supporters, a victory by the margin of 1562 votes is as good as a defeat. Party sources admit that scraping home in Parkala following the crushing defeat in Mahbubnagar constituency is no consolation at all.

What went wrong? The party satraps say the division of votes between the BJP and the TRS has been the major cause for the party’s poor show. Had the BJP’s 9160 votes gone to the TRS, the scene would have been different. What the party now admits, albeit privately, is that YSRC’s tearjerker over the Jaganmohan Reddy’s arrest (courtesy an unthinking Congress) was the tableturner. TRS leaders have started to think of ways to strengthen the party ahead of the crucial 2014 elections. The Telangana Joint Action Committee thinks that, to avoid vote-splitting, the party should strike a balanced deal with the BJP, which, too, is vociferously striving for a T-state. However, the TDP is said to be shedding its inhibitions about forming a new state and wants to have its T-arm before the next general elections. This could worsen matters for the TRS. BJP leader Sugunakar Rao told Postnoon that political analysts say the bypolls have proved that the notion of TRS that it has patent right over separate Telangana issue was wrong. Similarly, political analyst Telakapalli Ravi said all political parties except the CPM are supporting separate Telangana issue. “And the people are aware of this fact,” he said. The writing on the wall is clear. TRS has lost its monopoly over T-votes.

And, mayor Mohd Majid Hussain is no less shrill in his denial of funds for the CBD. The mayor is on record saying that the corporation, strapped for funds, is in no position to shore up so huge a financial support as the CBD demands. However, he has climbed down from his earlier stance of “will not spend a paise from the GHMC kitty,’ to “at the most `50-70 crore.” Additional commissioner

All the world at Sunday bazaar For students and book-lovers alike, the Sunday book bazaar at Abids proves to be a boon One would often wonder the survival of this market against trends. But the community here strongly believes that theirs is a completely unique market and has no fear of competition. “Ours is a very unique business and we have no fear from the big market. We sell only second-hand books and hence we have our own target audience,” says Mohammed Ghaus, who has been into this business since the last 30 years. More than the day of the market, which is Sunday, shopkeepers work very hard from Monday to Saturday searching and accumulating these books. They collect books from various parts of the City and also procure

books from Mumbai and Delhi. “We work during the weekdays to collect the books. It’s a very tedious task, sorting and arranging the book is a bigger task,” claims Bhanu Murthi, shopkeeper. Walking further down into the by-lanes gives the feeling of an all new world. The whole environment gives a feeling of late 80s or early 90s. The bazaar has a great collection of all genres of magazines, right from 1995 up to 2011. Despite all these brownie points, book lovers need to build tremendous patience to look for that particularly elusive publication because there is really no order in the way the books are placed in most shops.

eaps of books piled up with signboard which read, ‘Any book `10’ or ‘Any book `20’. Walk into Abids books bazaar, and one will encounter hundreds of such stalls. The commercial area of Abids is productively used on Sundays, where shopkeeper selling books have been doing great business for more than six decades now. Indeed, this place is a bonanza for book lovers in the City. More importantly, this book bazaar is a boon to the lower middle class students who can’t afford fresh books priced exorbitantly. Hyderabad hosts a second-hand books bazaar every Sunday. The commercial complex that houses Hollywood Shoes on the Abids main road is where it begins, and this continues to the GPO. Just like any other books bazaar, book lovers can hunt for fiction, technology, non-fiction, management, classic, comic books, magazines, home décor, cook books, spirituality, self-development, and arts and crafts books, apart from a host of others. This market also has educational books. “From KG to PG, we have everything,”

says Ram Babu, who has his stall set up as early as 8am. From youths to senior citizens, they all stride towards Abids for their pick. “Senior citizens come to buy old and language specific books, and youngsters come here for novels and old books,” says Azar Khan, a stall owner. The USP of this market is classic and rare books. One can find the oldest of the oldest Tinkle or Readers Digest and that to just for just `10. In the new age of books being available on the iPad and tabs, there is still patronage for second-hand books sold on roadside, and they are a big hit.

Tips to shop n n n n n

Take a round of the whole market first and then choose your pick. Bargain for half of what they offer. For education books, morning 9 to 11 is the best time. Make good friend with the shopkeepers, who will later import special and rare books for you. Have patience and you can perhaps find any book you wish too.

‘Metro work won’t be a risk’ With work for the Metro rail going on in full swing many fear that the coming monsoons will prove to be a potential danger for the citizens SRINIVAS SETTY

Rahul Ramakrishna rahul.r@postnoon.com

T

he Metro rail works are seen as a potential security threat during the monsoon. The digging, people fear, would prove a trap. Metro’s works along the Miyapur-L B Nagar corridor is gathering pace. About 2 to 2.5 metres of earth digging have been taken up along the rail corridor especially in areas like Punjagutta and the Gandhi Bhavan-Nampally stretch. A good look at the work being done on the main arteries of the City raises doubts and lowers expectations about the timing of the project and poses questions about security and the validity of the works being undertaken. But the Metro rail authorities seek to quell fears about the status of the project. Authorities at the Hyderabad Metro Rail told Postnoon about the current undertakings at various places in the City. Assistant executive engineer Bheemanayak said, “These diggings are what we call “utility probing”. These probes are conducted to check for underground power cables, water and sewage pipes, phone lines etc.” The utility probes are dug

only to an extent of 2 to 2.5 metres and are promptly covered back with M30 or M40 concrete mix. This entire stage of conducting and clearing a utility probe takes a week. “We take all necessary precautions including barricading and fixing reflective

warning signs to indicate the ongoing work,” Bheemanayak said. When asked about the kind of difficulties the department is facing over working in the monsoons, a confident Bheemanayak replied, “We are not deterred by the coming weather.” “Infact, the production of piers and foundation laying for the second stage of the Metro rail are going on parallelly,” he said. While the probe pits in Jubilee Hills and Punjagutta areas have been cleared and

covered, work on the Gandhi Bhavan-Nampally stretch is yet to be finished. The Metro Rail project which is divided into six stages has been under constant criticism, with the latest news of delays costing an additional 20 crore, because of legal hurdles in land acquisition, leaving a bad taste in the mouth of the people. While cost recovery may be made through a fare hike or a dent to the exchequer, the Metro continues to be awaited with caution and slight cynicism.

Amjad Khan

Ajit

Only one name comes to the mind when one wants to name the world’s most evil man — that of Gabbar Singh. Portrayed by Amjad Khan in the iconic Sholay, the character was so successful in projecting wickedness that it went on to become the cornerstone of villainy. Despite big names like Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar, and Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri, Amjad Khan stole the limelight in the movie.

One thing we learnt from Ajit is that the villain need not be ugly. This handsome man more than justified his good looks be starring as the second lead in movies like Mughal-e-Azam and Naya Daur. He brought in the nasty element to the characters he portrayed with a unique delivery of dialogues. The exaggerated nasal tone to ‘Mona darling’ and ‘smart boy’ made them so popular that they are easily the most repeated dialogues of Bollywood.

Pran

Danny Denzogpa

The earlier part of a long career saw Pran as the most hated villain in movie after movie. From blowing rings of cigarette smoke at the women to forcing himself on them, he did it all and with complete conviction. He turned into a character actor with Manoj Kumar’s Upkaar and enacted these roles with equal aplomb. At the peak of his career, he played the pivotal character in movies like Victoria No 203 and Chori Mera Kaam.

A hardcore disciplinarian, few can embrace retirement when enjoying fame and fortune the way he did a few years back. From Kala Sona with Feroz Khan to Asoka with Shah Rukh and Seven Years in Tibet where he acted alongside Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, Danny has had a long and successful run. He was last seen in Enthiran with Rajnikanth. Need we say more of his staying prowess or popularity?

Prem Chopra If there’s one name that can make a woman scurry for cover, it is Prem Chopra. His letchy look coupled with that yucky drooling paled only in comparison to the way he spoke to his victims. He was the Indian James Bond in the way he told his name, albeit with a sinister impact — Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra. He has acted in over 400 films like Teesri Manzil, Upkaar and Bobby.

Amrish Puri One person that could give a run for Gabbar Singh’s money is Mogambo. The character played by Amrish Puri in Mr India had the adults hating him and the children loving him. Versatility in his acting nurtured with exposure in theatre came easy to him as was seen in the positive roles he played in later movies. He attained international fame through Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

MEN WE LOVE TO

HATE

The villain has been an integral part of Indian cinema. Whether as a balm to our frustrations, or to appease the brute in us, the antagonist is the perfect bashing boy for our alter ego. Let’s see the best of them

Syed Shoaib, shoaib.s.@postnoon.com

Gulashan Grover This Badman is most notable for his different hairdos — one more weird than the other. He is one of the earlier Indian actors who made it big in Hollywood movies. His most notable international achievement was the character of an Indian holy-man he played in the film Desperate Endeavours for which he won the Best Actor International at the New York film festival. Some of his movies are I Am Kalaam, Ram Lakhan and Criminal.

Anupam Kher Many actors have immortalised one character in their chosen field of lead, villain or comedian. Anupam Kher has done that in not two but three characters if not more — one positive, the other negative and the third as a comedian. A retired grieving father in Saaransh, Dr Dang in Karma and comedian in a number of movies like Ram Lakhan, Lamhen and Darr to name a few. If that is not enough variety, add posts of chairman of the Censor Board and National School of Drama in India.

Sonu Sood His is versatility of another kind. Few can match the range of his achievements: an engineering graduate, Mr India pageant participant, big hits in different language movies — Arundhati in Telugu, which turned out to be the biggest hit of that year, Jodha Akbar and Dabangg in Hindi, a Kannada hit with Sudeep, Only Vishnuvardhana, and currently working with none other than Rajnikanth in Rana... phew!

Prakash Raj Recipient of national awards in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories, Prakash Raj is a fine natural actor. He acts in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi movies. He also produces and directs movies. His production Mozhi (Tamil) was a box-office hit and praised by critics. Picking his best is not an easy job. Those who’ve seen him in Duet, Iruvar, Kanchivaram, Pokiri or Okkadu will understand this dilemma.

Matters of saving and spending

Greece gets EU breather BERLIN: Eurozone countries extended Sunday a hand of compromise to Greece after the victory of parties supporting the country’s international bailout, signalling some flexibility on the painful reforms. “There can’t be substantial changes in the engagements” undertaken by Greece in the bailout deal. “But I can imagine we discuss again a delay” in achieving the targets, German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle said. The job, spending and wage cuts required under the 130 billion euro ($165 billion) bailout were a key issue among voters in Sunday’s Greek parliamentary election, with all parties calling for a relaxation of the terms if not outright cancellation of the deal. Germany has been one of the most hardline eurozone nations and insisted that Greeks have to implement the agreed deal if they want the bailout funds needed to keep the country from going bankrupt and possibly exiting the euro. Chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated Greece’s probailout conservative leader Antonis Samaras on his election victory and told him she was now confident Athens would abide by its European pledges. “She stated that she would work on the basis that Greece will meet its European commitments,” said a government statement recounting her phone conversation with Samaras, the leader of Greece’s New Democracy party. French finance minister Pierre Moscovici said eurozone finance ministers would soon release a statement on how they will approach the situation in Greece. He said that the eurozone will “demand that the engagements

A first official estimate said the conservative New Democracy party won the election and would be able to form a pro-bailout majority with the socialist PASOK party. But even New Democracy chief Samaras has called for the terms of the bailout deal to be

revised. Revising the deal doesn’t come without risks to the eurozone however. Too much flexibility risks calling the eurozone’s credibility on seeing painful but necessary reforms being carried through. Too much flexibility also risks provoking calls for leniency from Ireland and Portugal, which are struggling to implement austerity policies. While Germany is ready to show solidarity “what we cannot accept is that engagements taken are considered annulled”, said Westerwelle. “There is no other road but reforms,” said Westerwelle. The anti-austerity leftist Syriza party, which placed second, had vowed to tear up the EU and the IMF bailout deal that has given Greece a credit lifeline in exchange for harsh spending cuts. However there appears to be greater appreciation of the austerity fatigue among Greeks, who are now suffering through a fifth year of recession. AFP

fter searching for months for cash, the IMF looks able to firm up a huge emergency “firewall” fund for crisis prevention after China said Sunday that big emerging economies would chip in. A day before the Group of 20 powers open crucial talks on the eurozone crisis, Chinese Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao said that the International Monetary Fund would get the balance it needs to reach the $430 billion it tentatively announced in April. Major European and Asian governments have already pledged around $340 billion to the bailout fund, and Zhu said: “China is confident that the IMF will realize its $430 billion, and China will pitch in.” AFP

We welcome the commitment of the euro area to work in partnership with the next government to ensure they remain on the path to reform and sustainability within the euro area.”

he heads of the world’s leading economic institutions warned on Sunday that Europe’s muddled response to its debt crisis had rattled debt markets. Addressing business leaders on the eve of the G20 summit, World Bank head Robert Zoellick cited last week’s “wasted” 100 billion euro bailout of Spanish banks as an example of Europe’s institutional shortcomings. And the head of the OECD, Angel Gurria, urged Europe to “take down the scaffolding” still clinging to its systems of governance and to deploy “awesome firepower” to cow the markets. IMF chief Christine Lagarde said that, while Madrid is not under IMF supervision, the institution is monitoring the situation and would be “honest and candid” in its advice.

Markets can manage risks that they’re well aware of. The danger we’re creating is that the pattern of policy-making is increasing uncertainty and making markets more nervous, which has a negative feedback. “To take your Spanish example.... RBI leaves rates unchanged

T

he Reserve Bank of India on Monday kept key lending rates unchanged. The re-purchase rate remains unchanged at 8 per cent, which automatically keeps the reverse re-purchase rate at 7 per cent. The RBI said that since the last rate cut, global macroeconomic indicators have deteriorated and that the headline inflation numbers are far above the comfort range. “Since the RBI’s annual policy statement in April, global macroeconomic and financial conditions have deteriorated. At the same time, the domestic macroeconomic situation too raises several deepening concerns,” the apex bank said. In April, the RBI had cut re-purchase rate by 50 basis points to 8 per cent, which automatically impacted the reverse re-purchase rate which dropped to 7 per cent from 7.5 per cent. IANS

Mexico welcomes Manmohan Singh with Hindi billboard LAS

CABOS

(MEXCIO):

“Aap ka swagat hai” (You are welcome), read a giant billboard en route Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s convoy from the San Jose del Cabo International Airport to his resort hotel as he arrived here half way around the world from India for the G20 Summit.

In fact, Manmohan is among the first leaders Mexican President Felipe Calderon had scheduled for a bilateral engagement on the margins of the summit. The two sides had elevated their ties to what is officially called priviledged partnership when Calderon visited New Delhi in 2007.

At 79, Manmohan Singh is also the oldest leader in the G20 grouping, which was primarily formed at the level of finance ministers and central bank governors to find ways out of the economic crisis that had gripped the world in 1999. It was raised to summit level in 2008. Trade between India and

Mexico has been on the rise. From $2.95 billion in 2008, it jumped to $4.15 billion in 2011, as per official estimates with the Indian side. Some 25,000 Indian tourists also visited this country last year. Even though the Indian diaspora in this country is no more than around 2,000 people,

Mexicans have shown a lot of interest in India, thanks to the Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre in Mexico City. This apart, there is an Indian Women’s Association in the capital, an India-Mexico Business Chamber, a gurudwara, an Iskcon temple and even two Indian restaurants. IANS

India ranks 55th on foreign cash in Swiss banks

NEW DELHI: Indians’ money in Swiss banks may have risen for the first time in five years, but they account for a meagre 0.14 per cent of total foreign wealth deposited there — putting India at 55th place globally for such funds. The total overseas funds in Switzerland’s banking system stood at 1.53 trillion Swiss francs (about `90 trillion) at the end of 2011, which included 2.18 billion Swiss francs (Rs 12,700 crore) belonging to Indian individuals and entities. The UK accounted for the largest share of little over 20 per cent, followed closely by the US with about 18 per cent. This is the latest data disclosed by Swiss National Bank (SNB), Switzerland’s central bank. Among the top-ranked jurisdictions, the UK and the US were followed by West Indies, Jersey, Germany, Bahamas, Guernsey, Luxembourg, Panama and France, Hong Kong, Cayman Islands, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Saudi Arabia and United Arab of Emirates. Soul-cleanser Ganges to get cleaned up A

spiritual group here is conducting a survey on how best to clean the entire 2,525-km Ganges, the holiest of all rivers for Hindus but highly polluted today. The Gayatri Parivar has already begun cleaning the river in patches all across the country but it feels this is not enough. The entire stretch has to be given a facelift -- at one go if possible. “It will be a hugely challenging task, but this is our dream,” explained Kedar Prasad Dubey, a former bank officer who is one of the key persons involved in the project. Dubey said the survey would find out the number of ghats along the river, the extent of pollution and the number of volunteers needed for what would be an unprecedented enterprise. “We will also create public awareness on the necessity to keep the Ganges clean and litterfree,” Dubey said. The Ganges originates at

Gangotri in Uttarakahand, at a height of 12,769 feet above sea level. It passes through UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal states in India before entering Bangladesh where it flows into the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges basin is the most heavily populated river basins across the world, with over 400 million people and a population density of 390 people per square kilometre. The river is also one of the most polluted in the world, threatening not only humans but also over 100 fish and 90 amphibian species. The government’s Ganga Action Plan is widely considered a failure, angering many Hindus who worship the river as a goddess and are upset that the authorities do not seem to be bothered. The Gayatri Parivar, Dubey said, has rich experience in cleaning rivers as well as temples. On June 5, some 2,500 activists

joined hands here to clean the Ganges at Haridwar. On May 31, more than 2,000 men and women teamed up to clean all 10 ghats in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier that month, about 5,000 people took part in cleaning the river Saryu in Ayodhya, also in UP. Thousands of Gayatri Parivar members and others clean the

615-km Tapti river (which flows from Betul in MP to Surat in Gujarat) every month, Dubey said. Similarly, while the Narmada river between MP and Gujarat is cleaned every two months, a similar cleaning operation takes place for the Shivana river in Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh, he said.

In every campaign, out came tonnes of waste and litter that should have never been dumped in the rivers in the first place: old clothes, polythene and plastic, footwear, bottles, rotting food, even animal carcasses. “It is so sad that people have no respect for our rivers,” Dubey said. One of the biggest clean-up operations by Gayatri Parivar took place at the famed Rameswaram temple in Tamil Nadu in January 2011 when 650 people from 11 states gave the shrine and its surroundings a thorough wash. “I too was there,” Dubey said. “We formed human chains and took out 25 tractor-trolley loads of garbage from the temple area and four times more than that from surrounding areas. “Our people feel that it is high time both the banks of the entire Ganges was cleaned,” he said. “That’s what we want to do.” IANS

In Bulgaria, vampires retain bite SOFIA:

The ancient skeleton of a man, pinned down in his grave in order not to turn into a vampire, was put on show in Bulgaria last week, where vampire tales and rites still keep their bite even nowadays. The 700-year-old skeleton — unearthed in the necropolis of a church in the Black Sea town of Sozopol earlier in June — was stabbed in the chest with an iron rod and had his teeth pulled before being put to rest. Anti-vampirism rituals were behind the find, archaeologists said, making this potential vampire and another one found at his side an instant media hit. “These were most probably intellectuals who

outgrew the moral ideas of their 14th century. They were feared and buried outside town walls,” their discoverer, archaeologist Dimitar Nedev, told AFP. The national history museum in Sofia displayed one of the skeletons this week as “a strange proof of the beliefs and superstitions of our ancestors,” its chief Bozhidar Dimitrov said in a statement. “A museum employee kept making the sign of the cross while washing the bones,” he said, noting that vampire fears were still alive. Not only fears but also anti-vampirism funeral rites are still strong in Bulgaria even today, ethnologist Rachko Popov confirmed. AFP

Adult male ants kill rivals after their birth WASHINGTON: Adult male ants can single out their rivals as soon as they are born and then launch an chemical attack to eliminate them, a new study has found. Researchers at University of Regensburg and IST Austria found that male Cardiocondyla obscurior ants constantly patrol the nests to ensure that they are able to bite or chemically tag a rival as soon as he is born. Chemically tagged ants are then quickly destroyed by workers. When ants emerge from their pupae, or eclosion, they are vul-

nerable to attack because their exoskeleton has not yet hardened to protect them and their mandibles are also too weak to bite an attacker. And a rival is easy to spot because male Cardiocondyla obscurior ants are diphenic, either winged or wingless. The dominant wingless male ant, therefore, keeps an eye out for newborn winged ants. The researchers investigated the behaviour of male ergatoid Cobscurior ants in response to newly pupated males and females, as well as their interaction with developing pupae.

Lead study author Dr Sylvia Cremer from IST Austria said: “Older ergatoid male ants are able to distinguish pupae containing females by their chemical scent from those containing males. “Pupae containing males are often bitten while those containing females, or winged males disguised as females, elicit a mating response. “However, the chances of mistakenly killing a female or worker possibly prevents older males from attempting to completely destroy all rival males before they emerge from their pupae.”

YANGON: Once known as a rebel rapper with a penchant for electric guitars and dragon tattoos, Zayar Thaw now aims to be an agent of change as a parliamentarian in the stronghold of the Myanmar army that threw him in jail. The 31-year-old is a rising star in Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, which made a dramatic comeback in April elections after two decades in the political wilderness, becoming the main opposition force in parliament. The by-elections came amid sweeping changes in the country formerly known as Burma after decades of outright military rule ended last year. Myanmar’s quasi-civilian government has surprised even its critics with a string of reforms such as releasing hundreds of political prisoners and welcoming the opposition back into mainstream politics. Former political prisoner Zayar Thaw, perhaps Myanmar’s most unlikely member of parliament, was among four NLD candidates elected in the capital Naypyidaw — a victory seen as humiliating for the militarybacked regime. “You’re very young, you’re a hip-hop artist and you’re an ex-prisoner. How can you be an MP?” he told AFP in an interview in his Yangon apartment. “That’s something I hear quite a lot.” But it is precisely these qualities that may have propelled the dissident rapper into the corridors of power — and onto the global stage. He is part of a small entourage accompanying Suu Kyi on a historic tour of Europe, the first since she returned to her homeland in 1988 to care for her sick

mother and went on to play a leading role in the democratic movement. The trip is taking her to five European nations including Norway, where she on Saturday formally accepted the Nobel Prize that thrust her into the international limelight two decades ago. Zayar Thaw, one of the pioneers of Burmese rap, cofounded one of the country’s first hip-hop bands called ACID, which became a household sensation a decade ago thanks to its lyrics — often laced with anti-regime sentiment. The band sometimes circumvented the country’s notorious censors — who vet every piece of commercial music for subversive content — by circulating bootlegged copies of songs recorded in underground studios or performing in private stage shows. When it comes to looks, Zayar Thaw is not your average rapper. He appears bookish and bespectacled, usually in a crisp shirt and traditional wraparound longyi. He does, however, sport dragon tattoos all over his arms and legs.

Around the World Pro-bailout parties triumph in Greece ATHENS: Greece’s two main pro-bailout parties clinched enough votes to form a government in knife-edge elections on Sunday, as world powers pushed for a new cabinet as soon as possible to ease global fears. “Today the Greek people expressed their will to stay anchored with the euro,” said Antonis Samaras, the leader of the conservative New Democracy party which preliminary official results showed in the lead with 30.04 per cent. “We ask all political forces which share the aim of keeping the country in the euro... to join a government of national unity,” he said. “The country does not have a minute to lose.” Samaras pledged to honour Greece’s commitments but said he wants to ease the terms of an unpopular EU-IMF bailout deal which has imposed harsh austerity measures in return for a multibillion rescue package. The International Monetary Fund is pressing for urgent talks with Greece as early as next week. The IMF and the European Union pledged support for the next Greek government. European Union leaders urged New Democracy and its likely coalition partner, the socialist Pasok party, to urgently form a new administration that can lead Greece out of its debt crisis. AFP

Rodney King dead LOS ANGELES: Rodney King, whose beating by police in 1992 sparked one of the worst urban riots in US history, was found dead in his swimming pool early Sunday. He was 47. Police officers dived into the pool, to recover the body of the man who became a symbol of racial tensions and police brutality in America after his beating by baton-wielding LA police was caught on camera. Police Captain Randy Deanda told that King was found “unresponsive” at the bottom of the pool at his home in Rialto, California after a 5.25 am (1225 GMT) call from his fiancee Cynthia Kelley. He did not respond to resuscitation efforts from police and firefighters, and was pronounced dead . “Preliminarily, there do not appear to be any signs of foul play,” Deanda added, noting that police were conducting a drowning investigation and that the coroner’s office would perform an autopsy within the next 24-48 hours.

Talk back Greeks are to blame Because of one member the whole team is made to suffer. The Greek crisis cannot be blamed on anyone else but the Greeks. Not spending within their income is what caused this financial fiasco. It’s true it is not easy adhering to austerity measures for long. However, what other feasible option do they have but to abide by the condition set by those who are lending them money. Only spending cuts and tougher austerity measures can see them through this crisis. There may be conflicting views that cutting on spending would only worsen the crisis, but the current situation that Greece is in, I don’t think it will work. Vishnuvardhan Reddy Secunderabad

Drivers’ negligence Half the road accidents that happen can be avoided if the drivers were a bit more careful. Hyderabad is infamous for its horrible road sense. No tolerance, no patience and no etiquette mark an average Hyderabadi driver. There have been countless occasions where I came close to death being run over by RTC buses. These are the ones that have scant regard for rules. I guess the fact that they are hired by the government gives them arrogance. They don’t stop when the signal is red, they don’t allow us to pass when there is ample space, some even have the audacity to argue with traffic cops despite their being grossly wrong. Something must be done. Ramesh Narayan Banjara Hills

Presidential poll I am glad that consensus is growing for making Pranab Mukherjee President. In our national politics that reeks with corruption and other malpractices, Pranab is among the few who has stayed away from the muck and distinguished themselves by their work. It’s no secret that he is the one the Congress can count upon if there be a crisis. Those rooting for P. Sangma’s candidature must remember that he do not have the stature and the standing of Pranab for the country’s supreme post. There have been allegations of corruption against Sangma’s kin; there is no such stain on Pranab or his family members. Please remember Prez poll is above Sangma’s being a tribal leader. S

tar gazers around the world watched with excitement as the Earth’s sister planet Venus trekked gracefully across the sun’s disk for over 6 hours earlier this month. It was a special event because no one alive today is likely to be around when the next Venus transit happens in 2117. Slightly smaller than the Earth, Venus is the Earth’s nearest planet and comes as close as 40 million kilometres to us. It has no moon, no magnetic field and no water. The Earth’s 23.5° tilt causes our seasons, but Venus is tilted at a mere 3° which means there are no seasons on the planet. Its atmosphere has 96% carbon dioxide while its thick sulphuric acid cloud cover reflects 85% of the light falling on it. Over 20 space missions visited Venus since 1964 — the first Venera spacecraft sent by the Soviet Union was crushed by the impossibly high atmospheric pressure of 92 times that on the Earth’s surface! NASA’s Mariner 10 made a fly by Venus on its way to Mercury as did Cassini-Huygens which flew by Venus twice, in 1998 and 1999, on its way to Saturn. NASA’s Pioneerand Orbiter missions delved deeper into the planet’s secrets and the sophisticated Venus Express sent by the European Space Agency in 2006 sent valuable information about cloud cover, volcanic activity and lightening on the planet. Interestingly, seen from its North Pole, Venus has a clockwise spin whereas the rest of the planets in the solar system spin counterclockwise. Further, its spin is so languorous that it takes 243 earth days to complete one rotation while it orbits round the sun in 225 earth days — a day on Venus is longer than a year on our planet! Venus revolves around the sun in a near perfect circular orbit at a distance of 109 million kilometres while the Earth revolves in an elliptical orbit at an average distance of 149 million kilometres. In the course of their predictable movements Venus and the Earth are sometimes on the same orbital plane. Such alignment of planes happens in pairs of events separated by eight years and these events themselves happen once in 105 or 121 years. If Venus passes between the Sun and

the Earth during such an alignment of orbital planes, it will appear to us like a small dot moving across the sun’s disk – this is what we call the Venus transit. A transit is really like a solar eclipse, but solar eclipses are spectacular and occur at least two times a year, while Venus’ passage across the sun’s disk is rare and hardly noticeable. So what was all the excitement about? Venus has a special place in human culture. The Maasai of Africa named it Kileken and have a charming tale about The Orphan Boy who comes down to Earth to help an old man. It is called Shukra in Hindu mythology. Son of Bhrigu, Shukra was the teacher of the asuras and he learnt the Sanjivani mantra which is the key to immortality. Shukra presides over Friday and has an enmity with Jupiter. The ancient Egyptians mistook this celestial object for two different bodies: the Morning Star and the Evening Star. It was Pythagoras of Samos who pointed out in the 6th Century BCE that Phosphoros, the Bringer of Light and Eosphorus the Bringer of Dawn were the same — but he believed that this ‘wandering star’ orbited the Earth. The Greeks then named it Aphrodite, their goddess of love. Inheriting their mythology from the Greeks, the Romans named it Venus, after their own Goddess of Love and Beauty. Venus has been the subject of exquisite sculptures like the 2,000 year old sculpture of

THIS TIME DIDI MAY HAVE TO eat humble pie

t may seem outrageous that the Congress should refuse to kowtow to Mamata Banerjee’s demands over the choice of presidential candidate. Congress wants Pranab Mukherjee, while Mamata wants former president APJ Abdul Kalam though he is yet to agree to contest. It is said she is to formally announce today to her party MPs and MLAs to vote for the candidate she picks. Till date Congress has given into most of Mamata’s demands. It’s surprising that this time Congress has decided to stick to its guns and go with Pranab Mukherjee. Notorious for her whimsical ways, one can’t say what she might do next. It could be withdrawal of support for the UPA government. It’s a far cry, with Mamata, anything’s possible. Congress has shown excellent statesmanship in weaning away Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to their side; only a few days week ago he was backing Mamata in pushing Kalam. It’s a good sign the embattled ruling party is showing some spine.

Venus of Milo (now in the Louvre Museum in Paris) and the 1486 painting ‘Birth of Venus’ by Boticelli (in Florence). The Mayans called it Quetzalcoatl and developed a religious calendar based on its motion, while the Babylonians, like so many other cultures, associated it the Goddess Ishtar and with notions of fertility and womanhood. The symbol of Venus in Alchemy is also the symbol for the female in biology — no wonder a popular book on gender differences claims that women are from Venus! Venus is the brightest object in the earth sky after the Sun and the Moon. But the most illuminating effect of Venus was in 1610 when Galileo observed the phases of Venus with his telescope. These phases, Galileo concluded, could only be explained by the Copernican idea that Venus was orbiting the Sun rather than the Earth. That laid the foundation of the new astronomy. Venus transits in 1761 and 1769 allowed astronomers to observe it from different parts of the world and calculate the distance between the Earth and the Sun by using a system of triangulation. This distance is now known as an Astronomical Unit and these calculations allowed the first understanding of the true scale of our solar system. Afterthousands of years of ruling legend and lore, since its first observed transitin 1639 Venus has come to occupy a prime place in the history and future of science.

GIVE WINGS TO YOUR PASSIONS Faustina Johnson feedback@postnoon.com

E

very trip to the staff room meant a glimpse of the college dark room for Reginald Johnson, a physics student. The sight of the rarely used dark room set his mind thinking. Thought soon led to action— the formation of a college photography club which allowed the members to discuss, use the dark room facility, and aid those members who had few resources but an ardent interest. He could now borrow expensive equipment like enlargers, develop his own pictures at ease, and share ideas with like minded people. The year was 1974. Now, 38 years later, Johnson fondly remembers how the club helped him put to use his passion —photography. College student clubs are entities of zealous minds and voluntary labour. Student clubs may not always be recognised officially by the college. Nonetheless, they are a platform for exposure, work and socialising. “College clubs are the best

place to interact with like-minded people,” says Sneha Yamarti, who was an active member of a club in St. Francis College. Interest oriented, these student clubs might be anything, with Eco clubs being the most common. St. Xavier's PG College, Hyderabad has a grand collection of student clubs ranging from a Quiz Club to an eco club, called Greenlands, and even an Investment Club (Money Makers). Each department here, has a club devoted to their subject. The Social Management department operates Smile, the Psychology Department, Psycon, the Mass communication department has Drishti. “I initially joined a lot of clubs to feel more like a student,” says Shruthi E, who was in the organising committee of a number of clubs in Christ College. The sentiment is completely understandable. The feeling of belonging, an essential part of college life, is a great boost to personal development.“Being part of the clubs at Francis was a lot of fun and more than anything else you

In today's world where academic achievement receives disproportionate emphasis, we often underestimate the virtues of student clubs. Not only do they allow fine tuning of skills but they are often the reason students go to college.

realise the sense of responsibility. Each member has a role to play in the success of the club,” Sneha points out. What with having to skip lunch or stay late to attend meetings, it demands much time from the students, due to which, many may drop out, or become inactive. Ultimately, it is the most passionate who stick it through, and the effort is completely worth it. These dedicated members leave with a cache of newly learnt skills — time management, handling people, subtle skills. In colleges like St Francis, where the clubs are very active, they take care of everything from planning and organising events, stalls, cultural programmes, to single handedly managing college fest, funding, etc. The students’ dedication is evident in their effort. Most clubs have a core committee elected by the students. In Christ College, members of this committee are selected based on skills displayed handling tasks set by teachers. The commerce committee selection, for instance, usually includes planning a virtu-

al campaign. While such a meritocracy might come with disadvantages (bad communication, jealous classmates, etc) it certainly ensures that the talent is in the right place, for commendable work. Often times these clubs are established to feed rather unusual interests. The Hyderabad Central University boasts of a bird watcher's club. They may also exist in slightly different forms, like the student organisation in Loyola Academy which works for human rights issues. These may not fit into the traditional definition of a student club, but share the structure and functioning of one — that of bringing together like minded people with a cause. “Everyone in the club is highly supportive. As a member, you receive a lot of encouragement,” Shruthi smiles. Student clubs have come to be integral to the very functioning of the college by increasing the quality of education, inspiring and maintaining passion in the courses chosen, and enormously stepping up the appeal of the institution.

And they come pouring down With the monsoons there are also a host of ailments in the offing, with the possibility of malaria, chikungunya and dengue lurking in every puddle of stagnant water ranjani.r@postnoon.com

T

he scorching summer has abated and it’s time for those much awaited monsoons. What it’s also time for, is to guard against a host of monsoon related ailments that rear their ugly heads around this time of the year. And for a City that is notorious for its dirty water bodies and largely tropical weather, the risk of mosquitorelated ailments like malaria, chikungunya and dengue goes up considerably. In fact, according to a study published in the medical journal Lancet, nearly 1.2 million across the world succumb to malaria every year. Researchers reviewed the malaria mortality data from 1980 to 2010 and found that 1.2 million people were killed by the illness in 2010, which is twice more than what the toll was thought to be. In India alone, a whopping number of 46,800 Indians had succumbed to the illness.

While experts across the world are crying themselves hoarse about the incidence of malaria, according to State government data nearly 352 Hyderabadis had died due to malaria in 2011. “We do see a spurt in the cases of malaria, chikungunya and dengue during the monsoons each year. While chikungunya seems to affect the older generation slightly more,

malaria and dengue cases are seen across age groups and genders,” says Dr J Anish Anand, consultant physician at Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills. “The primary reason for these cases are the stagnation of water and unhygienic conditions during the monsoons. The low levels of awareness among people about the need to curb mosquito breeding and

maintaining cleanliness is also a cause,” says Dr Amita Bhandarkar, a Bangalore-based physician, “On an average nearly 20 per cent of the cases during the monsoons would be either malaria or dengue.” Treatment for these ailments is usually symptomatic. “We first run a blood test to rule out any other infection or ailment. When it comes to chikungunya there is a lot of joint pains so we prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to deal with it. The joint pains can last up to several weeks. Malaria takes around 5-6 days to get cured unless there are complications. If it is the phalciparum type of malaria it could be dangerous and sometimes the patient can either go into a coma or it could affect the organs,” explains Dr Anish. Dengue however, is riskier with the chances of low platelet count and shock due to low blood pressure being high. Sometimes platelet transfusion may be required. “The key is to maintain hygiene conditions and keep your surroundings clean.

GHMC initiatives to curb the issue n Anti-larval operations: A team of GHMC employees visit households, identify mosquito breeding and use chemicals to destroy these. Special activities in large water bodies like the Musi river, lakes, tanks and drains are carried out and there is a special team dedicated to this. Indoor residual sprays that last up to 90 days are applied on walls of homes to kill mosquitoes on contact. n Publicity: Currently the GHMC is screening a 1 minute short film on mosquito control at Numaish in Nampally. n Fumigation: Though not as frequent as before, fogging is carried out on the basis of complaints received and near large water bodies. Wherever there is stagnant water, spray oil to prevent mosquito breeding. In case, there is illness then complete the medical course to prevent relapse,” says Dr Amita.

Help your child deal with ADHD

Dr Diana Monteiro

I often hear complaints from my daughter's teachers that she is distracted and hyper. She is 10-yearsold and teachers say that she is either staring out of the window, is constantly fidgeting or engrossed in conversations. She just can't seem to pay attention and this is telling on her report card. How do I encourage her to get a little more serious without pressurising her ? Your child appears to be dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to the DSM IV TR, symptoms include: difficulty sustaining attention doing any task, not paying attention or making careless mistakes, not listening when spoken to, failing to finish schoolwork or chores, poor at organising, avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort, loses possessions often, easily distracted, fidgeting with hands or feet, leave their seat when remaining seated is expected, running inappropriately, have difficulty playing quietly, talk excessively, blurt out answers before questions are completed. Children with this disorder cannot pay attention or be calm because their brain does not allow them. Thus, a combination of medication and behavioural counselling is helpful. Children diagnosed with ADHD have a hard time without medicine, so it’s best to have the child evaluated by a proficient medical professional. In addition, a counsellor can help the child by teaching them ways to pay attention, minimise distraction and cope with it. Typically 40 per cent of people with this disorder will continue to have it in adulthood, while for others, the symptoms go away by the time they are adults. While there is no cure or prevention, it is treatable.Things parents can do include getting organised to help the child, avoid distractions when the child is studying and creating a routine. Don’t be afraid to consult a professional. (The writer is a counselling psychologist at the Hyderabad Academy of Psychology. You can write to her at askdrdiana@gmail.com)

Vitamin D and calcium may extend life, study says

A

new study showed that vitamin D with calcium can increase one’s lifespan. Vitamin D with calcium has been found to extend the life of elderly people, says the new study. Researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark found that elderly people who received vitamin D with calcium supplements were nearly 10 per cent less likely to die within three years than those who were given placebo pills. The findings were based on data taken from eight clinical trials, reported

Each study had about 1000 participants, 90 percent of whom were women. “In my view, a nine percent reduced mortality in the general population of elderly is of major importance,” study author Lars Rejnmark told Reuters. “Except for stopping smoking there are not many other known interventions that are capable (of) such a reduction in the risk of death.” This was the largest study ever done on vitamin D and mortality. Researchers addressed previous studies that calcium may have negative effects on

ike kidney stones, stones can also develop in the bladder. Stones form in the bladder when waste products crystallise. Anything that causes urine to stagnate in the bladder creates the potential for stones to form because waste products won’t be removed as they normally would. This may occur because the bladder isn’t emptying completely, for example, or because of prostate gland enlargement. It usually occurs in males. Some of the other causes of bladder stones include poor fluid intake, increasing age ( above the age of 45) and medical conditions such as gout. A change in urine acidity, due to dehydration, can also cause a stone to form. Symptoms for bladder stones include blood in the urine, difficulty and pain in passing urine. Various treatments such as cystoscopy and lithotripsy may be available.

he Food and Drug Administration has approved a new vaccine against meningitis meant for children as young as six weeks old. The FDA approved Menhibrix, a combination vaccine for infants and babies that prevents meningococcal disease and haemophilus influenza, according to the Associated Press. “With today’s approval of Menhibrix, there is now a combination vaccine that can be used to prevent potentially life-threatening Hib disease and two types of meningococcal disease in children,” Karen Midthun, MD, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement. Reuters reported that the FDA had rejected MenHibrix twice in the past, but GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of the vaccine, said it had resolved regulators’ questions about the vaccine’s efficacy. According to the FDA website, meningitis can be life-threatening. Bacteria can infect the bloodstream causing sepsis, or attack the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The FDA warns that without vaccination, children younger than two are susceptible to these serious illnesses. The symptoms of meningitis can be difficult to spot as they mimic those of the common cold. Symptoms include fast heart rate, change in mental state and a stiff neck. About 4,100 cases of bacterial meningitis occurred in the United States each year from 2003 to 2007. Dr Len Friedland, vice president of clinical and medical affairs for Glaxo in North America, told Reuters that meningitis is rare, but can still be devastating. “It presents to the doctor when a child just looks ill, and within 18 to 24 hours, they’re on the deathbed. To be able to have a vaccine to prevent meningitis is great,” he said. GLOBAL POST

DID YOU KNOW? Pineapple helps reduce swelling

P

Bromelin has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory properties which has helped reduce swelling in inflammatory conditions such as acute sinusitis, sore throat, arthritis and gout, and also helps in a quick recovery from injuries and surgery. Pineapple should be eaten alone between meals or its enzymes will be used up for digesting food. This will help to maximize bromelain’s anti-inflammatory effects.

The glamour behind the glitz

Zeta-Jones enjoyed playing a baddie A ctress Catherine ZetaJones says she had fun playing a negative role in new film Rock of Ages, which based on a Broadway play of the same name. inger Kylie Minogue, who recently completed 25 years in the showbiz, believes that she was destined to become a star. “I’ve survived with determination and a bit of luck. I feel like this is what I was put here to do and it’s my destiny. So I just try to keep going and this experience has been beautiful,” contactmusic.com quoted her as saying. The 44-yearold beauty said she got emotional as she looked back at all the memorabilia from her career. “I don’t think many of us look back. Maybe once a year at Christmas the photo albums come out and you all go, ‘Oh remember when...?' But I don’t spend too much time doing that. So this year we’ve gone through a lot of photos, a lot of footage, and yeah, it brought that back to me and when I saw images from when I did my first record and my first album, I was like, you are such a baby! It was a whole lot of mixed emotions for me,” she added. IANS

‘Friends reunion would disappoint fans’

M

att LeBlanc has ruled out a Friends reunion, saying that he wouldn’t want to disappoint fans of the 1990s sitcom. The 44-year-old rose to fame with his role as Joey on the NBC show, which also starred Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry. LeBlanc recently returned to television on the BBC Two and Showtime comedy Episodes, in which he plays himself. When asked if would be open to a TV reunion with his Friends castmates, the actor told Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t want to see old Joey.” The television star went on to explain that a reunion wouldn’t work because it wouldn’t capture what the series was about. “That show was about a finite period of time,” LeBlanc said. “Before you got married and went off to start your life with a family. It was that magical time that everyone can relate to. To see what we’re all doing now…I’d rather imagine that.” LeBlanc also admitted that letting down fans of the show is a huge deterrent. He added: “Everyone’s going to have different vision of what those characters are like, so to have that materialise is going to disappoint most people. “A couple of people will go, ‘That’s what I thought!' but for the most part it’s going to let people down. It’s better to let them just think.” Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow have also ruled out a Friends reunion.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

LEGENDS OF THE SPORT Anja Andersen (born February 15, 1969) Widely considered to be among the best handball players of all time, Anja Andersen won a gold medal in the 1996 Games. Andersen was known for her skills as an attacking player and played a key role in helping the Danish team achieve the status of national sports heroes. In 1996 Denmark defeated the Republic of Korea in the final 37-33.

Andrey Lavrov (born March 26, 1962) was the first three-time Olympic Handball champion and is the only athlete to have won Olympic gold medals for three different national teams. Speed, skill and stamina are key attributes for competitors in Handball, a quick and exhilerating team sport. Developed in Denmark, Sweden and Germany in the late 19th century, it was originally played outdoors as field handball. It first appeared at the Olympics at the Berlin 1936 Games.

Handball at Games Handball was developed in Denmark, Sweden and Germany in the late 19th century. Originally played

outdoors, the sport first appeared at the Berlin 1936 Games. The modern indoor version made its Olympic debut at Munich 1972. Handball has featured at every Olympic Games since.

The basics Played on the largest court of any indoor ball sport at the Games, Handball features two teams of seven players passing and dribbling a ball. The aim is to throw the ball into the opposition’s goal. The goal is protected by a goalkeeper. Only the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area in front of each goal. Players may jump into this area when attempting a shot at goal but must release the ball before landing. Matches consist of two 30minute halves.

Competition format At London 2012, both the men’s and women’s Handball competitions begin with a preliminary phase: In this group phase, teams receive two points for a win, one for a draw and nothing for a loss. At the end of the group phase the four best teams in each group qualify for the knockout rounds, starting with the quarter-finals, where the winners enter the semis. The winners of the semi-finals eventually go head-to-head for the gold medal.

Officials Two referees oversee each game. They are assisted by a local timekeeper and scorekeeper, two IHF officials and an IHF Match Supervisor.

The Handball Ball The ball must either be made of leather or a synthetic material. It is not allowed to have a shiny or slippery surface. As it is intended to be operated by a single hand, the official sizes vary depending on age and gender of the teams. Resin is used to improve ball handling.Though not officially regulated, the ball is usually resinated. The resin improves the ability of the players to manipulate the ball with a single hand. Some indoor arenas prohibit the usage of resin since many products leave sticky stains on the floor.

TASHA ENDS GAMES DREAM LONDON: Britain's Tasha Danvers, the bronze medallist in the 400m hurdles at the Beijing Olympics, has retired after conceding defeat in her battle to be fit for the London 2012 Games, according to The Guardian. The 34-year-old has suffered a series of injuries and ahead of the preliminary squad announcement for the Games this week Danvers, from south London, has quit. "It's extremely disappointing not to be able to put myself into contention for selection for London 2012," she said. "Based on my training at different stages my coach and I believed we had a genuine chance of making it. But the setbacks have been too many to overcome,” she added. "Since winning Olympic bronze in Beijing I have made so many sacrifices to fulfil my dream of competing in London. Making the decision to relocate back to the UK meant leaving my seven-year-old son behind in America, which is the hardest thing in the world to do.” “But we genuinely believed I could step on to that podium again and with the support of my family, [coach] Malcolm Arnold, UKA, the medical team and the National Lottery, I've done everything possible to try to achieve that. Sadly my

body has had enough." Danvers, who also won Commonwealth Games silver in 2006 – less than 18 months after giving birth to her son – has made every final she has contested since 2004. Arnold said: "This is the worse possible news for Tasha but there is no doubt she has thrown everything at trying to make London. She is an Olympic medallist and that pedigree doesn't just disappear. I was confident that if we could get her to the Games she would have been very competitive.” "This is the flipside of the Olympic dream but career-ending injuries are a

Great Britain's head coach Charles van Commenee added: "We don't have too many current Olympic medallists in our team and in an ideal world they would all be with us in London.” “Tasha knows what it takes to be competitive and also make the podium, which would have been a huge advantage. Retirement is a hard decision for any athlete but when the decision is taken out of your hands so close to an Olympic Games, it must be even tougher. I wish Tasha all the very best," he went on to add.

Dwyer to lead strong Australian side SYDNEY: Five-time World Player of the Year Jamie Dwyer will spearhead the Australian men's pursuit of gold at next month's Olympics, it was announced on Monday. The 33-year-old is heading for his third Games and scored the golden goal that earned Australia — the current World Cup holders — the Olympic title in Athens eight years ago. "I'm so honoured to be named in the team," Dwyer said. "The Olympics only come around every four

years and it's such a long road to get there, it's really a fantastic feeling." Dwyer will lead a team of 16 to London for an Australian side that is ranked number one in the world and strongly tipped for Olympic glory. Apart from Dwyer, more seasoned campaigners include Mark Knowles, Liam De Young, Eddie Ockenden, Des Abbott and Fergus Kavanagh. "We've got a few experienced guys on the team," Dwyer said. "The young guys look up to us and come to me for advice, and that's good.” AFP

Cavendish powers to first stage-race victory of career PRAGUE: Mark Cavendish said he would try to "relax" as much as possible before the Tour de France and the Olympic Games after the first general classification win of his career, the Ster ZLM Toer in the Netherlands, reported The Guardian. Team Sky's 27-year-old had an eight‑second lead over his nearest challenger Lars Boom at the top of the standings heading into the fourth and final stage on Sunday and he kept that advantage intact as he finished safely in the main pack following a sprint finish to take the overall win. Germany's Marcel Kittel claimed the stage victory on Sunday having also won on day one, the ArgosShimano rider finishing the 163km ride from Schijndel to Boxtel in a time of 3hr 35min 54sec. "I've been second a couple of times in the past but this is my first GC win and I'm really happy with it," Cavendish said. Looking forward to the Tour de France and the Games, he added: "I'm training really well. I wanted to be in my best form and definitely looking forward to them.”

Ronaldo dedicates goals to his baby boy

Glenn Whelan has spoken for the first time of the frustration Ireland’s players feel playing in Giovanni Trapattoni’s rigid formation. The 4-4-2 system has been key to Trapattoni’s transformation of an international team. But, it has failed horribly at the European Championship, where Ireland have lost their opening two games, with an aggregate score of 7-1.

Cristiano Ronaldo dedicated his goals to his baby son after claiming a brace in a 2-1 win over the Netherlands. Ronaldo’s son, also named Cristiano, turned two on Sunday, while his father produced a thrilling display to hand Portugal a semifinal encounter with the Czech Republic in Warsaw on Thursday.

Bilic backs Croatia GDANSK: Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has backed his team to pull off a shock victory over defending champions Spain in Monday’s Euro 2012 clash as they bid for a place in the quarter-finals. Having beaten Ireland 3-1 and drawn 1-1 with Italy in Group C, Bilic has said his players must produce the “games of their lives”, to halt the rampaging Roja who hammered Ireland 4-0 at Arena Gdansk on Thursday. A shock win over the world and European champions will see Croatia qualify for the quarter-finals as group winners, while a draw could be enough depending on whether Italy beat Ireland in Poznan, Poland. With four points from the win over Ireland and a 1-1 draw with Italy, the task is straight-forward

for Spain: a draw means qualification and a win ensures first place, but Bilic expects his side to rise to the occasion.

Croatia vs Spain 12.15am (Tuesday) Neo Prime “We play best when we play against good teams," said the 43year-old, who was part of the side that finished third at the 1998 World Cup in France, beating Germany en route. “We like playing against the big favourites. “This is a new, fantastic generation. This team are really determined and they have a lot of energy. They are ready for big

things. “This is the most important match in a generation. “We have to try to get a positive result, maybe Spain are better than us but we must be compact and solid. “When we attack, we will attack as a team and look to keep possession as much as we can, but we need to play as we know. “We are confident and the players are determined.” With three goals in two games, Wolfsburg striker Mario Mandzukic is the tournament’s joint top-scorer, but is unwanted by club coach Felix Magath and the 26-year-old has said he will only discuss his future after Euro 2012. “I just want to do my best tomorrow, the only thing now is to focus on the game against Spain,” he said.

POZNAN: Damien Duff (right) will captain Ireland for the first time as he wins his 100th cap for the team against Italy in their final Euro 2012 Group C game here on Monday. Ireland have already been knocked out of the competition and are playing for pride against the Azzurri, who must win to stand a chance of making the knock-out rounds. And it will be a big moment for 33-yearold Duff, who made his international debut 14 years ago. “I am happy to acquiesce to the team’s request to pass the captain’s armband to Damien Duff who will celebrate his 100th cap tomorrow,” said Ireland’s Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni. “All of us are grateful to Damien for his contribution not just as a football player but as a role model and example for future generations.” The quiet winger admitted he wasn’t comfortable taking the limelight. “I was dragged here kicking and screaming to be fair,” he joked at the pre-match press conference. “I never want to make a big thing out of anything in life. “I will look back on it and know it’s a feat but at the moment I just want to get a good performance and result tomorrow. “It’s an awfully proud moment but I’d take the three points tomorrow ahead of the 100 caps. “I know how much it means to myself and my family

Ireland vs Italy 12.15am (Tuesday) Neo Sport but I’m not trying to make a big deal of it and just get on with the game and do the business.” Duff said it won’t be the first time he has had to lead the prematch team talk but after two defeats in their first two Group C matches the former Chelsea, Newcastle and Blackburn star believes the troops will need little rallying. “We used to take it in turns back in my Chelsea days but it’s been a while,” added Duff. “It shouldn’t be a problem to motivate the players, we just want to restore our pride in the green shirt. “I don’t think the lads will need a team talk to be fair.”

Germany buries Viking dreams Ryland James

LVIV: Germany advanced to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 on Sunday as defender Lars Bender (far right) scored his first international goal to seal their 2-1 win over Denmark which put the Danes out. After Portugal’s 2-1 win over Holland in Kharkiv, another three points at Arena Lviv confirmed Germany as Group B winners with three victories while Portugal progress as runners-up from the socalled “Group of Death”. “The match was just as tough as we thought it would be,” admitted Germany coach Joachim Loew. “We lacked the killer instinct in the first-half, which would have made it easier, and then Denmark scored. “We knew we could have gone out if we had gone behind, so nerves crept in. “We showed maturity in the second-half, but we can still improve.” The Germans will now

play Friday’s quarter-final against Group A runnersup Greece in Gdansk, their Euro 2012 base, while Portugal will play the Group A winners the Czech Republic in Warsaw on Thursday. “We have to be disappointed, but I am not disappointed with the team,” said Denmark coach Morten Olsen. “It was a fantastic perfor-

mance and we have played against one of the world’s elite, but unfortunately we paid the price for our carelessness.” Lukas Podolski, who was making his 100th appearance for Germany, celebrated his century with the opening goal on 19 minutes which was cancelled out by a Michael Krohn-Dehli just five minutes later before Bender’s late winner. “Independent of the goal,

that was my first start (for Germany), so it was something special,” beamed Bender. “We were trying to get that second goal, I just saw the goal in front of me and it was a bit lucky. “I am not used to being in that position, but it felt good to be there.” Having made his debut in the 2-2 friendly draw with Poland last September, the 23-year-old Bender was making only his ninth

KHARKIV: Portugal beat the Netherlands 2-1 on Sunday to set up a Euro 2012 quarter-final with the Czech Republic and condemn the Dutch to a first group-stage European Championship exit since 1980. Needing to win by two clear goals to stand any hope of progressing, Holland took an early lead through Rafael van der Vaart but were undone by goals in each half from man of the match Cristiano Ronaldo. “We have succeeded in

our great aim, which was to qualify for the quarterfinals,” said Ronaldo. “Now we have to play against the Czech Republic, which is going to be hard, but we’ll do our best.” Portugal, for whom Ronaldo belatedly reproduced his Real Madrid form at this tournament, will compete for a semi-final place against the Czechs in Warsaw on Thursday. “It was the best game we have played so far, except for the first 12 minutes,” said Portugal coach Paulo Bento. “But we’ve been loyal to

our spirit and we’ve now shown that we’re capable of reacting against Denmark and Holland. We won’t let up.” Mindful of the pressing need for goals, van Marwijk handed starts to both KlaasJan Huntelaar and van der Vaart, who replaced captain Mark van Bommel and inherited the captain’s armband from him. Van der Vaart hit the post with a right-foot curler, but it was the only bright moment in what was a desperate second period for the Dutch, who saw Ronaldo wobble an upright in the final minute.

appearance for Germany, while twin brother Sven, who plays for Borussia Dortmund, was cut from the squad. Both coaches made only essential changes to their start line-ups. Loew opted for Bayer Leverkusen’s Bender at right-back for Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, who was suspended after picking up a yellow card in their 2-1 win over Holland last Wednesday. Likewise, Olsen brought Jakob Poulsen into the midfield for veteran forward Dennis Rommedahl, who damaged his hamstring in their 3-2 defeat to Portugal. The Germans started at pace and got the break through when Mueller fired his pass across the Denmark goal and Mario Gomez let the ball roll for man-of-the-match Podolski to drill his shot home on for his 44th international goal. The Germans held the lead for only five minutes before Nicklas Bendtner headed back from a corner and Krohn-Dehli, who also scored in the Danes’ shock 1-0 win over Holland, got his head to the ball before the German defence. With ten minutes to go, Germany counter-attacked. Ozil squared for the grateful Bender and the right-back calmly slotted past Andersen to seal victory.

SAN FRANCISCO: Webb Simpson of the US came from four shots back to win the US Open at San Francisco’s Olympic Club on Sunday, overtaking a bunch of big names to win his first major title. The 26-year-old from North Carolina, in just his second US Open, battled back from two early bogeys to grab four birdies in five holes from the sixth and then parred his way down the rest of the back nine for a gripping win. Simpson closed with a 68 and a one-over total of 281, one stroke clear of countryman Michael Thompson (67) and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell (73). A further stroke back in a five-way tie for fourth place were Americans Jim Furyk (74) David Toms (68), Jason Dufner (70) and John

Peterson (70) along with Ireland’s Padraig Harrington (68). Simpson was the ninth straight first time winner in the majors and he was the 15th different winner in the last 15, underlining once again the current strength-in-depth of world golf. “It was nerve wracking,” he admitted. “I know what kind of players they are (Furyk and McDowell), both have won Majors. “I expected both of them to do well coming in. I thought even though Graeme had a 25 footer, it was probably going to hit the hole or have a good chance.” “I couldn’t be happier than I am right now.” It was day when birdies were rare and survival was the order of the day as a cold mist and spotty rain drifted in from the adjacent Pacific Ocean to compound the difficulties of the

exacting Lake Course layout. Former winners Furyk and McDowell started the day holding the joint lead — the only men to be under par at one-under 209. Furyk said he had felt all calm all day, but had been unable to produce the golf he was capable of. “I don’t know how to put that one into words, but I had my opportunities and my chances and it was right there,” he said. “On that back nine, it was my tournament to win and I felt like if I shot even par or one under I would have distanced myself from the field and I wasn’t able to do so. “And I played quite well, actually until the last three holes.” Earlier in the day, Tiger Woods saw his hopes of a 15th major title, four years after his last US Open win, rapidly crushed as he dropped six strokes in the first six holes. The 36-year-old American eventually came in with a 73 and that, alongside his 75 on Saturday, was his worst weekend score relative to par in a major, casting fresh doubts over the current state of his game.

Nalbandian faces lengthy ban LONDON: David Nalbandian issued a second apology for his sensational disqualification from Queen’s Club as the fiery Argentine faced a possible lengthy ban in the aftermath of a second spectacular meltdown this year. The 30-yearold was defaulted from the Queen’s final for angrily kicking an advertising board at a line judge which left the official suffering a gashed and bloodied leg (above). The Argentine was stripped of his runners-up cheque, worth 44,945 Euro ($56,802), and 150 ATP ranking points, which he would have earned as a beaten finalist. He could also be hit with a 10,000 euro ($12,638) fine, which will be decided by ATP chiefs at a later date. But he could also face an eight-week ban having also been fined $8,000 for throwing water at an Australian Open tournament worker in January following a five-set defeat to America’s John Isner. Having already apologised on court for his actions, Nalbandian issued a further statement through the ATP late Sunday in an effort to limit the damage just a week ahead of Wimbledon where he was runner-up 10 years ago. “I never intended to hit him [the line judge], it was an unfortunate reaction in which I wanted to let off steam after losing a point,” he said. “I had the opportunity to personally apologise to the line umpire for this regrettable act that I am fully responsible for.” Although Nalbandian was contrite about the actual incident, he had also vented his frustrations at the ATP. He claimed officials impose too many rules on players, including asking them to play in the kind of slippery conditions that have been commonplace over the last few days at Queen’s, a traditional warm-up event for Wimbledon.

LeBron, Wade guide Heat to victory and the lead MIAMI: LeBron James had 29 points and 14 rebounds and Dwyane Wade (right) finished with 25 points and seven assists on Sunday as the Miami Heat beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 91-85 to take the lead in the NBA Finals. Wade sank two free throws with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Heat, who seized a 2-1 edge in the bestof-seven championship series. The Heat, in the NBA Finals for the second year in a row, are trying to win their first NBA title since 2006. James, the regular season NBA Most Valuable Player,

made 11-of-23 shots from the field and was a force on both defence and offence. He finished just shy of posting his sixth consecutive playoff game of 30 or more points. Miami, which will host the next two games in the series, can take a stranglehold on the Thunder with a victory in game four on Tuesday. Chris Bosh had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Heat, who scored their final five points from the free-throw line. Miami shot 88 percent from the line compare to only 62 percent for the Thunder. NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant had 25 points, Russell Westbrook scored 19

points and Kendrick Perkins had 10 for the Thunder, who got off to their best start of the series in the first quarter but couldn’t execute down the stretch. Both teams made mistakes and turned the ball over in the fourth, but Miami had more composure at the end of the game when it could have gone either way. With just 16 seconds to play and the Thunder trailing by four points, Oklahoma City’s Thabo Sefolosha turned the ball over with a bad inbounds pass to Westbrook, forcing the Thunder to foul Wade, who made two final free throws.
