f well-dressed young men with a glib tongue ring your doorbell, introduce themselves as sales-cum-service executives from reputed jewellery firms and offer exchange of gold ornaments or polishing old jewellery, ring up the nearest police station. The Market Police recently caught three of them, while the leader and three others escaped. They are all from Bhagalpur in Bihar, inspector S Vinod Kumar said. Police recovered seven tola of gold ornaments cheated from unwary women from different parts of the City. Kumar said if the whole gang is caught, the police are sure to seize a large quantity of gold ornaments for the seven-member gang has been going around duping housewives for the past eight months. The arrested were identified as Nirdosh Kumar, 27, Rajesh

Kumar, 30, and Ramchander Shah, 38. They used to put up at a rented house in Ziaguda, Mangalhatt. Their ringleader is said to be one Vasudev Pandit. He came to Hyderabad around two years ago and brought his

accomplices over a few months ago to launch a full-scale operation. Pandit reportedly paid each accomplice `700-800 a day for their toil and a handsome amount when they visit their native place once or twice

every month. The modus operandi, as explained by the Market Police, runs like this. One or two of the gang would target a house where women are alone after men have gone to work. They would produce a register to

pregnant woman in Alibagh Chunne Ki Bhatti was allegedly subjected to physical torture by her husband and in-laws. She has been admitted to Government Maternity Hospital and her husband has been arrested. Afshan Begum, 23, of Misrigunj married Mohd Shafiq Khan, a salesman, in 2010. The girl’s parents are said to have given the groom’s family a 100-sq yard plot, as well as seven tolas of gold and a substantial amount of cash.

note down the women’s names and addresses, asking if they have old ornaments for exchange or for polishing. Their company is doing this at a subsidised fee for popularising their brand, they would say. If the housewives desired polishing, they would first polish a silver piece and give it back to gain confidence. When gold ornaments are produced, they would work on them while one of the men would strike up a conversation and say how the world had turned untrustworthy and people have started disbelieving each other. One would even ask for a glass of water and in a flash, they would either replace the trinkets for gold or ask the women to bring a cooker or a closed vessel to keep the ornaments as they ought to remain closed for a few minutes to retain the gloss. By the time the women opened the vessel, the men would have sped away.

Recently, Khan was rendered jobless and his parents wrested gold ornaments from his wife and pawned them,

said sub-inspector of Kalapathar, B Anantham. Not content with the gold, the in-laws reportedly pressed

Afshan to dispose of the plot. But the woman did not have the papers. Demanding that she go to her parents and get the papers, her in-laws, sisters-in-law and husband began harassing her. Recently, the verbal abuse turned physical and a bleeding Afshan was shifted to a hospital. Later, she lodged a complaint with the Kalapathar police against her husband and in-laws. The police booked a dowry case against the entire six-member family and arrested the husband while the remaining members of the family left home and bolted. Police are now searching for the in-laws.

THINGS WE LEARNT TODAY

The column that teaches everyone something new about the way the City functions.

1

GHMC takes action against diseases, but is it too late? After ignoring the issue of vectorborne diseases for a long time, the GHMC in the wake of the upcoming CBD conventions is working towards tackling the issue of communicable diseases.

2

Be wary of ‘fake’ executives knocking at your door. A gang of three would visit homes and rob the women, who were alone at that time, of gold jewellery on the pretext of polishing them.

Committee plays truant Even as the CoP-11 is fast approaching, the standing committee of GHMC failed to visit drains and streams that are potential breeding grounds. Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com

D

espite the urgency, the planned visit of GHMC officials to several of the City lakes was postponed twice this month. The standing committee members were supposed to visit several of the lakes in view of the impending world meet but to the utter dismay of zonal commissioners and other higher officials, none turned up. Several Engineers from the chief engineer (maintenance) to the engineers at zonal level and the special deputy collector (land acquisition) — all were on their toes on September 7 and September 15. Drains and streams were to be visited to do damage-controlling measures as an outbreak of communicable diseases during the CBD would put the City to ignominy. But the political members of the Committee couldn’t care less. Sai Aishwarya Residency Cheruvu, near LANCO Hills, Pedda Cheruvu (South and

West), Gopi Cheruvu (North Side), Gopanpally Tank, Gopi Cheruvu (South Side), Pedda Cheruvu (North and West), Kocha Kunta, Ring Bund, Oontiwadi Nallah and land at Chilkalguda were scheduled to be inspected. Except two sites, which fall

under North and South Zone, all eight sites are from the West Zone, most of them in Serilingampally division, the venue of the meeting. According to observers, the lack of coordination between the bureaucrats and executive, continues. Corporators blame

officials and engineers for the poor state of roads and other civic amenities. Some engineers have come up with strong letters of disapproval from their association resenting the politicians penchant to blame officials at the drop of a hat.

GHMC acts tough against pasting posters POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

W

ith the world conference about to begin, the GHMC has embarked on an operation to remove all illegal wall posters in the City. But the operation has experienced an unexpected hurdle. Unlawful advertisers who paste posters are also too smart for the corporation. Officials who wanted to upbraid the advertis-

ers and penalise them find most of the phone numbers mentioned in the posters not working. The corporation is imposing a fine between `1,000 and `5,000 for every illegal poster.

A total of 89 notices have been issued against 66 different organisations in the last two months. Coaching institutes are among the top violators found pasting posters. Film posters were also found displayed without permission at several places. To further its objective, cases are being booked against the violators by the AP Open Places and Prohibition of Options and Advertising Act. “We have booked cases under the Act which is stringent,” said M

Bhaskar Reddy, addl SP GHMC. Interestingly, 20 organisations that pasted the posters could not be traced. According to the official, most of these numbers are switched off or could not be reached. While notices were issued against 15, fine was imposed on 23 organisations. In view of the CBD, the vigilance department under GHMC is exploring the options for availing services of police force for enforcing the provision.

ssembly was today adjourned after half hour into business following a fracas between the TRS and Lok Satta leader Jayaprakash Narayan. House was in turmoil before the Speaker announced adjournment and convened an all-party meeting to ensure smooth conduct of the House. The trouble began soon after calling the House in to order by Speaker. Just like yesterday, the TDP, TRS and CPI-CPM all together started demanding adjournment motion on different issues ranging from Telangana to diesel price hike. Nothing was heard in the din. Then they moved to the well and began shouting slogans. The Chair sat silently watching while the din continued. Meanwhile, Jayaprkash Narayan, got up and berated the TRS for wasting the House’s

Assembly continues to waste power

After this incident, the Speaker announced adjournment for half hour. It is said the Chair’s attempt to bring around the warring parties has not borne fruit. Earlier the TDP MLAs had staged a dharna outside the Assembly demanding the ouster of all the tainted ministers.

he idea of giving MLAs and MLCs laptops at our cost was to make them smarter in serving their voters. They should keep basic details of their respective constituency and people and do research so that pro-people programmes could be weaned away from the government. But the first day of the Assembly session on Monday proved no MLA carried the laptop with them. Nor could one see anyone using them in the Assembly premises where WiFi is provided for their benefits. Speaking on the issue

senior official of AP Assembly, Ramesh Kumar said, it is not mandatory for the MLAs and MLCs to carry their laptops along. Laptops were given for their personal use. There is no compulsion for the MLAs to use the laptops in the House. They can use it anywhere,” he said. Government chief Whip Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy, whose basic responsibility is to ensure proper functioning of the House agreed that no MLA was inclined on using personal laptops. “Yes, it is true that no MLA is interested in carrying his or her laptop to the House. And, interestingly, there is no rule to enforce it on them,” Reddy said. Loksata Party president Jayaparakash Narayana said, “I don’t think MLAs are not using their laptops. Many of them have certainly become computer-savvy and know the basic tricks of how to use it.” But an Assembly official confided in Postnoon saying that if properly enquired, nine out of every 10 laptops given to the legislators would be found in the possession of their children.

hey say rules are meant to be broken. But what if the violators happen to be the ones who make them? The first day of the AP Assembly Session witnessed one such rule violation. The directives of Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and chief secretary Minnie Mathew Minnie Mathew to curb wastage of power were openly flouted by the officials of the AP Assembly. The specific instructions to avoid air conditioners (AC) in all government offices were not at all implemented. The officials kept the lights turned on even in broad daylight. The lobby too was well-lit. A similar scene was witnessed at the media point and its adjacent room. Even in the canteen, the officials and other staff of the assembly were least bothered to keep the doors open despite the possibility of getting a direct day light and natural air into the canteen. The lights and fans in the canteen were glowing without any genuine need.

POSTNOON EXCLUSIVE GHMC health department has belatedly swung into action, desperately trying to do what it can to keep communicable diseases at bay during the world conference.

Vector-borne diseases worry CBD managers SUDESHNA KOKA sudeshna.k@postnoon.com

D

ates fixed, tickets confirmed, hotel rooms booked but sickly air? This happens to be the biggest priority on the check-list of the international delegates who would be landing in Hyderabad end of this month. With less than two weeks for the red carpet to roll out for the world delegates, the outbreak of swine flu and dengue fever has become a major cause of worry for GHMC health officials. According to the State government records, so far, 633 positive cases of vector-borne diseases have been registered

in the State; in private hospitals, more than 1,000 cases are being treated. Not just dengue fever but H1N1 (swine flu) cases have also been registered. Eight more cases of swine flu have been reported in a week’s time. With air-borne diseases floating about, what will be the outcome if 4,000-5,000 world delegates congregate here, is a question nagging many. “Yes, this is indeed a cause for concern. We are alarmed and have asked the GHMC health and sanitation department to beef up preventive measures for the convention,”said chairman of the Biodiversity board, R Hampaiah. So far, 19 swine flu deaths

have been reported and for dengue, the number is unclear. The government confirms only three deaths but unofficial records say the death toll has crossed 25 so far. As compared to last year, the rise in this malady is 40 per cent, which is pretty high to tame. “True, there has been an increase and a sudden spurt of the disease. One of the main reasons is unhealthy conditions and dampness in the surroundings. There is no vaccine for dengue fever and one has to be careful. So far, only four deaths have taken place and the situation is under control,” said Dr Daruru Ranganath, superintendent, Niloufer Hospital. Swine flu has vaccines, but

these are still in the testing phase, Dr Vijay Varma, a general physician, said. For dengue, there is no vaccine; the disease will resolve by itself, hence precaution is the only way to prevent both these diseases, he added. The GHMC health and sanitation wing is also on high alert and is now taking special interest, but it is a bit late in the day. “We have started anti-larval operations on a weekly basis for CoP hotspots. Places where dengue cases have been registered are subjected to thermal fogging programme. Also, we are creating awareness through the media on preven-

tive measures,” said C Ratna Joseph, the GHMC chief entomologist. A special 60-member team has been appointed at the convention center to conduct indoor spraying as a precautionary measure. “Visitors who are coming from other countries should be extra cautious. They should use mosquito repellents, wash their hands as often as they can. In any case of doubt, they should contact a doctor immediately and people who have come in contact with them should also get a check up,” said Dr Aftab Ahmed, general physician, Apollo Hospital.

Eega is our only ray of hope

SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster film Eega is the only Telugu film that has been shortlisted by the Film Federation of India to nominate India’s official entry to the Oscars. Can it break the 26-year-old jinx? HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com

S

S Rajamouli’s Eega, one of the most critically and commercially successful films of the year, is going to compete against 17 other films in the race to be India’s official entry to the Oscars. It’s the only Telugu film in contention this year, and the first Telugu film to find a place in the final list in several years. Despite being one of top three film industries in the country, Telugu films are rarely in the spotlight when it comes to awards at the national or international stage. K Vishwanath’s Swathi Muthyam, which released back in 1986, is the only Telugu film to have been nominated as

India’s entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category, although it couldn’t make it to the final five nominees. Can Eega break this 26-year-old jinx? Over the past few years, FFI has been under tremendous amount of criticism for ignoring regional cinema and favouring Hindi cinema. In the past five years, one Malayalam film (Adaminte Makan Abu), one Marathi film (Harishchandrachi Factory) and three Hindi films (Peepli Live, Taare Zameen Par and Eklavya) were sent to the Oscars. Out of the 18 films shortlisted this year by FFI, there are 11 Hindi films, including Paan Singh Tomar, Barfi!, Kahaani, The Dirty Picture, Heroine, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1 & 2. Can Eega

beat all odds to bag this honour of representing the country at the Academy Awards? “We have made a technically superior film and its innovative storytelling makes it stand apart from the rest. Let’s see how it goes,”

Eega (Telugu) 7am Arivu (Tamil) Vazhakku Enn 18/9 (Tamil) Akasathinte Niram (Malayalam) Heroine (Hindi) Paan Singh Tomar (Hindi) Kahaani (Hindi) Barfi! Suresh Babu, one of the producers of the film, says, adding, “It’s true that there’s overwhelming competition from Hindi cinema. They’ll continue making their Paan Singh Tomars, Barfis and Dirty Pictures, but where will you find a fly taking revenge?” The jury, appointed by FFI, is currently in Hyderabad to watch all the 18 films and an announcement is likely to be made next week about which of these films will be sent to the Oscars. Films like Paan Singh Tomar, Kahaani and Barfi! have been universally acclaimed and analysts say that the odds are in their favour, but Telugu movie aficionados would be rooting for Eega, which has been the most innovative film in years. It’s our only ray of hope.

ormer President APJ Abdul Kalam has said that the doctors would justify their profession only when they were providing selfless services to rural and tribal areas. Abdul Kalam visited Medicity Medical College at Ghanpur in Ranga Reddy district here on Monday. He said that satisfaction would not count with any valuable thing if every doctor worked to fill happiness in 100 people in his lifetime service. He asked the medical students as to how many members would be ready to provide medical services in rural areas. He explained about famous doctor Sudarshan for providing medical services to poor people free of cost in Karnataka. He recalled that he and Care Hospital chairman Dr Somaraju had produced ‘Stent’ equipment earlier. He said doctors should spend time on research too. NSS

SOCIAL CHANGE

Tweet to clean your streets! The next time you want to fix a civic issue that is plaguing your neighbourhood, you can report it to the Social Cops who will pass it on to the local authorities who will work towards resolving it. NT BALANARAYAN balanarayan.nt@postnoon.com

T

ired of apathy from the governments across the country, a bunch of youth have decided to take matters in their own hand. They are working on a new platform Social Cops which will let anyone report of any issue ranging from garbage dumped on the roadside to a low hanging electric cable in their locality. The complaints will in turn be passed on to the authorities and Social Cops will work with the NGOs to bring about a change. The team behind the venture, a group of Indian students studying in Nanyang university in Singapore, is still trying to raise funds and they are doing so via Indiegogo.com. ( h t t p : / / w w w. i n d i e g o g o . c o m / SocialCops). Prukalpa Sankar, one of the core members of the team says that they’ve all worked extensively with NGOs on solving grass root problems in India. “At that time the India Against Corruption movement was at its peak and we realised people wanted to be actively involved in changing policies and creating change. Yet, these movements

(from left) Varun Banka, Prukalpa Sankar and Harjoben Singh

were not really leading to lasting change. We began to brainstorm about possible ways to bring together citizens, the government and the other bodies that could solve problems in India. We started with small problems — garbage on the roads, potholes and water drainage issues,” she says. “Our founding moment was

when we realised that the municipal corporations in India were becoming increasingly tech-savvy and were requesting citizens to be more actively involved in public administration issues. It was this moment that helped us put it all together and identify the change process that we were trying to create. We were also the runners up in the

Microsoft Imagine Cup Singapore 2012,” Prukalpa added. The team has five members as of now; three of them are planning to take up Social Cops full time for a year while two others from the original team will be working part-time. The team does think the project will be challenging, especially since they have to manage their studies simultaneously, but they are confident that they can pull it off. “It is definitely a challenge to manage Social Cops along with university filled with quizzes and exams. Yet, for all of us Social Cops is a dream and when you dream about something, you truly find a way to make it happen. We have been receiving a lot of support from people all around the world since we launched our social media and crowdfunding campaign — and that truly keeps us going,” Prukalpa says. The technology behind the platform is expected to be ready by December 2012 and meanwhile the team is getting in touch with civic bodies, NGOs and corporates to ensure that the moment they are back in India, Social Cops can be launched. The team is also working to actively recruit a team of active

Varun Banka, one of the co-founders of the project had earlier created Sweksha (http://sweksha.com/) — an online directory of NGOs in India and Prukalpa was a volunteer for the Joy of Giving Week (http://joyofgivingweek.ning.com/). hey have been seriously preparing for the past two-three weeks: stretching, jogging and running. Only one among them looked like he exercised regularly; some just started six months back, some a year ago... but none of them had done a half marathon before. Yet they showed no wariness, only curiosity and eagerness to hit the road. These five first-timers from the corporate field had come down to attend a small press meet arranged at the house of Uma Chigurupati, a member of the Marathon Grand Slam and chairperson of the Hyderabad Heritage Marathon. Judson D’souza had been a

football player at the college level. He runs every morning and so has been keeping trim and fit. “I have not done a marathon before,” he said, but he did not seem in doubt about finishing the half marathon. “A footballer runs about 10 miles on an average. So I think I should make it.”

For Chanakya, who has been working out regularly at the gym, but took running seriously only after enrolling for the marathon, it’s taking his fitness to the next level. “I have been stretching and jogging regularly lately and adhering to tips from my trainer,” he said. “I think I should make it,” he

said with a sheepish smile. Soma was a volunteer at the kit distributing point last year and had decided that he wanted to run this time. And that drove him to losing weight and getting fit. “I have lost about five kilos in the last few months working out at the gym. Running a marathon will be a completely new experience for me.” Jyotsna who sticks to jogging and walking regularly to stay fit said she wanted to test her fitness. “Let’s see how far I can go.” For these people the marathon also offers the chance to hit the monuments that the route passes by. The only place they all have been to is Charminar. The rest were just names. Uma’s daughter Priyanka, too, is participating in the half marathon. “Last year (the first

edition) I could not run, as I was in the US for my studies.” This is a big moment for Priyanka, for some time back she was plagued by injuries to her knees which she says was caused by running without proper warm-up and stretching. Now she has been doing it right. “I make sure I stretch before my runs and I can tell the difference.” The first-timers were seen listening intently to Uma as we were leaving. The ace runner advised them about various aspects that must be attended to before and while running, like keeping oneself hydrated and the importance of electrolytes. If there had been any wariness that weighed on them as the day for the run approached, they seemed to lose it, for they knew they were in safe hands.

Vaccine dearth raises concern

Fel-O-Vax, a core vaccine which protects cats from numerous infections is out of stock, thus raising concerns among veterinarians. The manufacturing company promises to take steps to solve the issue.

JYOTSNA NAMBIAR jyotsna.n@postnoon.com

S

ince the past few months, a core cat vaccine, Fel-OVax, has been unavailable in Indian markets. The vaccine which is manufactured by Pfizer and protects cats from a host of viral infections, is considered essential by veterinarians. Reiterating the importance of Fel-O-Vax, Dr Deepa Katyal, a companion animal vet practitioner from Mumbai said, “Around 40-50 per cent of cats die due to respiratory trouble. In India, as opposed to the practice of having pedigree dogs, most people adopt stray cats. These

cats are more exposed to infection and therefore, this vaccine is essential to protect them.” The viral infections that the vaccine protects against are incurable. Cats usually are given two doses in the first year, followed by booster shots every year. Dr Idrees Ahmad Malik, a veterinary surgeon at Blue Cross, Hyderabad says, “There is no substitute for this vaccine. For the past four months we have been putting in orders for it, but it is neither available at wholesale nor at retail shops. The distributors said they will inform us when they get some fresh stock. Until then, we have no choice but to not give

the vaccine.” Prashant, who works at Nutan pet shop in Himayat Nagar, confirmed that the shops were also out of stock. “The Fel-O-Vax stock has not come in for about 5-6 months. There seems to be some problem, but we are not sure what it is.” The problem is not restricted to Hyderabad. Dr Wasim, a senior consultant at CUPA, Bangalore said, “This is an allIndia problem. The government authorities have stopped the licence to import the vaccine since the last few months. There appears to be some internal issues with the company. Another company, Virbac Animal Health, is also trying to

at the

get into the market, but nothing has happened so far.” Dr Katyal added that her sources have indicated there was some issue over pricing and import of the vaccine. When asked whether there were alternative methods of importing the vaccine, Dr Wasim said, “It can’t be ordered online. The main problem is the lack of a proper cold chain while importing them. By the time the product comes through customs, it would have degraded and be rendered useless.” Some veterinarians, though, have managed to find a solution. “We had run out, but now we have made alternative arrangements,” said Dr Anjaneyulu at Animal Care Clinic, Hyderabad. But the relief is temporary. “I have some in stock, so I’m not too worried. I also can get it through friends and other sources. But after a while, there will be difficulties. The cold chain is a problem. It isn’t easy to import vaccines privately,” added Dr Katyal. When asked whether they had approached the government over the issue, Dr Katyal said, “We haven’t approached the government. Only the (pharmaceutical) company which makes these vaccines can do that. If the situation continues, the vet practitioners’ associations will have to do something.” A Pfizer spokesperson said, “Pfizer is taking steps to mitigate a temporary supply interruption of Fel-O-Vax cat vaccine in the Indian market. We understand that veterinarians and pet owners rely on this important cat vaccine and Pfizer is working with the competent authorities to minimise the duration of the supply shortage. “This supply interruption does not impact the quality or integrity of the finished product. The company is keenly aware of the importance of Fel-O-Vax to pet owners and is committed to resolving the issue as quickly as possible.”

any a times, it is a hobby that turns into a business for small scale women entrepreneurs. Garikapati Shanthi, a BSc graduate, had always a passion for stitching and embroidery. Her hobby of stitching cloth bags, pillow covers and other furnishing material eventually helped her to start Om Sri Sai Enterprises in March 2011. Her commitment to work and passion towards art is driving the business even in these tough times. Talking about business idea, she said, “I learnt stitching and embroidery during my school. I continued it as a hobby and used to stitch different furnishing material for my home. I got a tailor and got him to stich the designs. Earlier, we used to stitch for distributing them among friends. As my confidence rose, it pushed me to start the company. We offer printing on saris, jute bags and nonwoven bag manufacturing for retail shops.” Starting up a small scale unit and expanding it to the fullest

potential is not easy. “I am happy that it is uplifting and empowering women employees. We also outsource the work to the middle class women, who can stitch the bags by sitting at home,” says Shanti. On initial challenges, she says, “There is huge demand for labour with emergence of supermarkets. The workers too are interested in that environment rather than learning the art of stitching. Even after hiring them, there is no guarantee about their attendance. At times, we worry of fulfilling the orders within deadline commit-

Employee shortage, absenteeism, competition from Chinese products and power shortages hinder business growth. ted because of absenteeism. I feel that small scale entrepreneur should manage such situations. The output efficiency may not be the same when an entrepreneur works, but the work will not get suffered.”

“Getting clients is another big challenge. We send marketing people to get orders and to maintain relationship with clients. However, after building strong relations with clients, the marketers start business on their own with these clients. This is pushing to us to see clients by ourselves rather than sending a marketing team,” she explains. “The other big challenge is working capital. Banks are not ready to offer loans without a security. We approached three banks for my earlier business and all of them demanded collateral security,” Shanti says. (Banks should provide funds up to `1 crore to Micro and Small Enterprises without any collateral security under Credit Guarantee Fund Trust) “The imported non-woven bags from China are almost 40 per cent cheaper. We are paying taxes and giving employment, but finally losing out. Power scarcity is also another impediment. We have to have to comprise on volumes and cut down our orders,” she says. Even with all these challenges, the business will continue to grow and expects a breakeven this November.

Zynga's Bill Jackson said the acquisition was part of a move to expand into new categories of play with "mid-core, multi-platform" games. A multi-player "Solstice Arena" title being worked on by A Bit Lucky will launch as a Zynga offering. A Bit Lucky was founded by Frederic Descamps and Jordan Maynard, and the studio's staff includes veterans of companies such as Trion Worlds and Xfire. Developing richer, more sophisticated games for the array of Internet-connected devices is part of a move by Zynga to be less dependent on Facebook, where it rose to stardom with "FarmVille" and "Poker." Zynga recently hired "Mortal Kombat" series cocreator John Tobias to be part of its San Diego studio.

FADING ILLUSIONS

Magicians struggle to keep art alive in modern world Magicians from across the world have limited their performances to birthday parties and corporate events, and at times fairs and festivals.

T

hey neither yell out spells at the drop of a hat nor do they attend wizarding schools like characters from the famed Harry Potter literary series but a clutch of people strive to keep alive performing magic, an art form, which faces extinction in absence of new innovations. "I wouldn't expect a urban college goer to take up magic as a profession. There is no demand for a magic show elsewhere apart from big cities where people host big corporate parties," said Kabir, a collegiate from Delhi, whose passion for magic tricks gradually led him to a performer. Like Kabir, several others who participated at a Magic Festival held here at Dilli Haat feel the same. "It is something you perfect after a series of failures, one must never fail to impress the viewer and the trade of magic is how well you can do that," says Eric Leclerc, a magician who flew down from Canada. Leclerc who has been entertaining since he was a nine-yearold boy says, "My first audience was my mother, who gifted me a magic set during Christmas and I practiced with it until the day I stunned her with by a trick. That was when I first became a magician." However, he feels magic is a

dying art."A magician gets to perform only at corporate parties these days" says Leclerc who is a renowned figure in Canada. "If you go out and say I am a magician, people are nonchalant but once I make a coin disappear

before them they are awestruck and believe you" he says. On the other hand Ajay Bhargav who hails from Gwalior, feels magicians don't get their due since most of them rely on tricks that have already

been seen by audiences who get to know the science behind it. "There is no proper research that goes on, we rely on what our predecessors did, but this field has a lot to explore, we are nothing but artists who create

illusions with our talking and hand movements to divert the attention of the viewer to perform a trick" says Bhargav. He adds that it is difficult since there are thousands of artists performing the same art, made famous by the likes of magicians like PC Sorcar or Harry Houdini. Magicians from across the world have limited their performances to birthday parties and corporate events, and at times fairs and festivals, but yet not as acclaimed as other forms of art, say artists. "I would love to perform on the streets, if I get an opportunity to do so, at least I can get to the people and make it popular" says Kristina Melnik, an artist from Belarus. She adds for a woman to establish herself in this field is even more of a challenge. "As it is we require a lot of physical fitness to perform an act, it requires me to be fit every time though I generally use props that are more woman like" says Melnik. For Eric Leclerc, a magic show competition, much like a music or dance competition could be an option to promote it as a form of performing art."It is the only time I would be nervous about performing, because I have to perform my in front of people who already know the trick" he says. Nine of the victims are foreigners, officials said. The early-morning attack was in protest to avenge an anti-Islam film, a militant group said. KABUL: A suicide car bomber Tuesday killed 12 people, nine of them foreigners, officials said, in an early-morning attack claimed by a militant group which said it struck to avenge an anti-Islam film. The attack on a highway leading to Kabul international airport was the second suicide strike in the heavily fortified city in 10 days, renewing questions about stability as NATO accelerates a troop withdrawal and hands over to Afghan forces by the end of 2014. Afghan insurgent group Hezb-i-Islami claimed responsibility for the blast, saying it was carried out by a woman to avenge the “Innocence of Muslims” film, deemed insulting to Islam. The claim was made by spokesman Zubair Sidiqi in a telephone call to AFP from an undisclosed location. It is extremely rare for the faction to claim a suicide attack in Afghanistan. Afghan insurgent group Hezb-iIslami on Tuesday claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing in Kabul targeting foreigners, saying it was carried out by a woman to avenge a US-made film deemed insulting to Islam. The claim was made by spokesman Zubair Sidiqi in a telephone call to AFP from an undisclosed location. It is extremely rare for the faction to claim a suicide attack in Afghanistan. It is also rare for women to carry out suicide attacks. “The bombing was carried out by a woman named Fatima. The bombing was in retaliation for the insult to our Prophet,” he said. The attack came a day after protests turned violent for the first time in Afghanistan over “Innocence of Muslims”, as hundreds of angry men hurled stones at a US military base, clashed with police and shouted “Death to America”. The movie, believed to have been produced by a small group of extremist Christians, has sparked a week of furious protests.

132 inmates escape from Mexican prison ORREON, MEXICO: At least 132 inmates escaped from a Mexican prison near the US border on Monday, fleeing through a tunnel they dug in the old carpentry workshop, the state prosecutor’s office said. The escape sparked a mas-

sive manhunt, with federal police and the Mexican army deployed on roads and highways near the correctional facility in Piedras Negras, a city bordering the Texas town of Eagle Pass. US authorities were told

about the escape so they could take precautionary measures, the Coahuila state attorney general’s office said in a statement. The prison’s director, security chief and shift guard were questioned over the escape and authorities have asked a judge

to issue a detention order against the three.State attorney general Homero Ramos Gloria told reporters that the escape took place at 2:15 pm local time but that it took about an hour for prison guards to notice it. AFP

YANGON: About 60 political prisoners have been freed in Myanmar, a member of Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy told AFP Tuesday. The amnesty came as Suu Kyi arrived Monday for a keenly anticipated US tour which will coincide with a separate visit next week to New York by President Thein Sein.

MANILA: Philippine police have rescued two kidnapped Chinese mining prospectors and killed one of their abductors in a sting operation in the country’s south, a police spokeswoman said Tuesday. Li Defeng, 43, and Yang Liguang, 48, were unharmed when police carried out the operation, which was disguised as a ransom payment drop.

SEOUL: South Korea will host a multinational navy drill aimed at curbing trafficking in weapons of mass destruction, its defence ministry said Tuesday, in a move likely to anger North Korea. South Korea, the United States, Japan and Australia will carry out the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative exercise on September 27.

BEIJING: Thousands of antiJapan protesters rallied across China over a territorial row on Tuesday, a key historical anniversary, as Japanese firms including car giant Toyota shut or scaled back production. The demonstrations came after several days of protests, some of them violent, over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

Mitt Romney’s campaign came close to hitting the self-destruct button when he stood by a secret video recording suggesting that 47% of Americans are government-dependent scroungers who do not pay taxes. In a hastily-convened press conference, the Republican presidential candidate confirmed the authenticity of the video and opted against disavowing the views expressed in it. He said only that the case was not “elegantly stated” and that he had “spoken off the cuff”.

he cutting down of a 30year-old banyan tree in Punjagutta on Sunday night, which was reported by this paper, because it “was drawing too much water from the ground” is so bizarre it borders on the farcical. Sadly, environmental awareness in Hyderabad, or the lack thereof is reaching ludicrous levels. What’s more disheartening is that a number of the youth from the upper-middle classes and upper classes of society seem to be the biggest culprits when it comes to turning a blind eye to environmental degradation. I can understand (though don’t condone) ignorant government contractors and uneducated laborers carving their way through the urban green cover in complete ignorance of the impact: The former don’t give two hoots about the city, while the latter only worry about the next square meal. Where is the outcry from civil society? Where are the green activists when all across the city trees are being ‘pruned’ within an inch of their lives? Where are the voices, the anger, the revolution? Too busy living their lives it would seem. But decades from now, when Hyderabad has come to resemble an urban quag like Mumbai, people will realize that they should have spoken out. You may laugh at those who tie themselves to trees to prevent the being cut down, but at least they give a crap. If we don’t care about our city, can we really blame those who believe that if a tree falls in Hyderabad and there’s no one around, it doesn’t really make a sound. The silence is fatal.

WHAT’S AMERICA’S ROLE NOW?

LETTERS FROM EGYPT Erin Cunningham

A

n uneasy calm hung over the area surrounding the US Embassy in Cairo on Sunday, after four days of clashes sparked by demonstrators protesting an anti-Islamic internet video produced in California – and that engulfed nearly the entire region – finally came to a halt. Local shops re-opened, traffic flowed through a nearby square, and workers, guarded by fresh barbed wire erected to protect the embassy grounds, painted over the anti-American graffiti tagged on the building’s walls. Egypt’s riot police made sweeping arrests in an early morning crackdown Saturday, detaining more than 140 people, the interior ministry here said. At least a dozen people, including the US Ambassador to Libya, were killed across the region. “Last week, it was all tear gas and stones, and people bleeding,” said Nihal Al Hakeem, the owner of a pharmacy directly across the street from the US Embassy in Cairo, referring to the clashes between

protestors and police. “But now, everything seems to be okay.” But even as violent melee in Cairo and other Muslim-majority Arab capitals subsided, the effort to contain the political fall-out from the week-long crisis shifted to diplomatic quarters, where a serious debate over America’s long-term role in a changing Middle East appeared to be taking place. On Saturday, the US ordered the evacuation of all non-essential personnel from its missions in Tunisia and Sudan, where facilities were either damaged or looted over the weekend. The US Embassy in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, vandalized by protestors on Friday, announced Sunday it would be closed until the end of the month. In Cairo, where angry protestors stormed the embassy on Tuesday, it had yet to open for normal consular services. Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to power, sought to quell US fears that its interests were insecure in an Islamist-led Egypt. Morsi had erred in his initial response to the breach of US Embassy grounds in Cairo, where protestors tore down the US flag and hung a black Islamic one in its place. First, he condemned the message of the video, which portrays the Muslim Prophet

Mohamed as a sex-crazed warmonger. And only after US President Barack Obama told the US-based, Spanish-language television network Telemundo that Egypt was neither an enemy nor an ally, did the Brotherhood reverse course and censure the demonstrators for defacing the mission. “We are trying to spread the message that this is not typical of the average American citizen,” said Ibrahim Al Iraqi, a member of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party in Mansoura, an Egyptian province just outside Cairo. “We must inform and re-educate the people, so they are not distracted by these things produced by foolish individuals,” he said.

“And we believe the state must take a role in this.” Still, analysts chalked up Morsi’s primary response as pandering to the more conservative Salafi Muslims who had called for the protests and whose political parties still pose a threat to the Brotherhood at the polls. t was a move that underlined Morsi’s growing independence from the White House, but also a comeback of sorts for the radical political Islamists who were sidelined when parliament was dissolved in June. It will likely continue to color both the domestic political scene and Morsi’s relationship with the US, analysts said. GLOBAL POST

Pursuing your dreams There are many youngsters who are stepping out of their comfort zones and quitting their jobs to take up causes they are passionate about. AMY ROSE THOMAS amyrose.t@postnoon.com

M

ost people who in spite of knowing where their heart lies prefer slogging and staying in their dead-end jobs. However, there are also a select few who took the leap and pursued their dreams. How much ever romantic it might sound, living out your dreams is not easy and comes with a lot of difficulties. The very first battle you will have to fight will be against your own parents. Dreams, which some of these youngsters share like dedicating lives to the underprivileged children in the country and spreading awareness about climate change, are unlikely to go down well with parents. National Coordinator of NGO Indian Youth Climate Network Chaitanya Kumar had similar problems when he declared to his parents that he would be working with an

NGO after four years of studying computer science. “Taking such decisions and following your dreams are much easier if you had the support of your family. NGOs are invariably associated with selfless work and not getting paid for the service. I couldn’t break these notions right away since I had to work for free for two years with IYCN as I had no

prior experience of working in the field. But now, after getting associated with 350.org, I am getting paid as much as I would get while working in the corporate world. This has helped my case better with my parents,” Chaitanya says. But Amrita Rizal had it easy. Her parents were right by her side when she decided to give her job at Google a miss and co-

founded the Humane Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (HSPCA). “From childhood, I dreamt of being a saviour to the street animals. I got this from my family who were equally passionate about helping animals. So when I decided to take the leap my parents were very supportive. There is no better feeling in the world than when you know that there are many animals that are getting homes because of you and since I quit, never did I miss my work. I will be getting back to work in some time though since the NGO is in need of money,” she says. Gloria Benny is another youngster who gave up her cushy job to be part of NGO MAD. “After a point, big package and a good portfolio will mean nothing to you,” she says “While working, I used to dedicate my weekends to MAD. I felt that it wasn’t enough and quit my job. I am not regretting the decision one bit,” she adds with a smile.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE FOLLOWING YOUR DREAM

Start with passion

Y

ou must believe in yourself and must be passionate about the cause that you are taking up. You are going to give up your career and stepping out of your comfort zone so it is important that you do not regret your decision after quitting the job. You should take the plunge only if you think you are passionate enough..

Have a plan

C

areful financial planning is required before quitting since it is likely that you will not be paid for the first few months or sometimes even years of your new job. It is a risk and if you think it is worth taking then go for it. Therefore, you should have saved enough during your current job or have family by your side in case you need help.

Back-up plan

I

n spite of wishing and dreaming, there are always chances that everything doesn't go according to your plan. You might have to face a lot of problems and end up not that successful in realising your dreams. In such situations, it is essential that you have a back-up option for you to fall back on.

Emotional support

C

hances that your journey once you resign will not be hunky-dory. It is important that you have family or friends by your side during crisis situations. In case your parents are not in support of your decision, make sure that you have your friends by your side especially because you might face financial difficulties without a job in hand.

hriya had been waiting for this day for almost a week. As she awoke the next morning she noticed slight redness and pain in her eyelids. Initially ignoring it as a sign of excess sleep, she was shocked to later on notice that it had slowly developed into a lump that was causing excessive pain. A visit to her ophthalmologist revealed that it was a sty. A sty is an infection. It is also known as hordeolum. It is seen in the form of a red lump on the eyelid. It could occur anywhere on the eyelid. According to Dr G Ramakrishna, “A sty is characterised by symptoms such as swelling in the eye, pain, watering and redness in the eye. This may be seen in either the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid.” Other symptoms could include tenderness in the eye, irritation, swelling, burning in the eye, sensitivity to light etc. Styes are of two kinds. The first is the external hordeolum and the second is the internal hordeolum. The external hordeoulum refers to a sty at the base of the eyelid while internal hordeolum is located in the underside of the eyelid.

In order to prevent this infection it is advised that the patient wears cooling glasses when outdoors, should wash their hands before touching the eye and washing

their face when they return from outside.” It is also advised that one should (women) be careful while using eye make-up as it can be a cause for an infection if not of good quality. Blepharitis or inflammation of the eyelid can also result in the formation of a sty.

Hepatitis C is an infection that mostly affects the liver. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes this disease. Often, a person with Hepatitis C does not have any symptoms. However, chronic infection can scar the liver. Many years of infection may cause cirrhosis. Sometimes, people with cirrhosis also have liver failure or liver cancer. They can also have very swollen veins of the oesophagus and stomach.

Fingernails grow nearly 4 times faster than toenails. If you notice that you’re trimming your fingernails much more frequently than your toenails you’re not just imagining it. The nails that get the most exposure and are used most frequently grow the fastest. Nails on both the toes and fingers grow about one-tenth of an inch each month.

Ultra-low cost scanner reveals foetal defects The device could be a big help to medical teams working in the world’s poorest nations with basic, antenatal information that could save thousands of lives.

LONDON: A hand-held scanner, costing as low as 40 pounds and of the size of a computer mouse, if plugged into any computer can reveal vital information about the foetus, that can save lives of thousands of women and children, has been developed by British engineers. The device, developed in Newcastle University could be a big help to medical teams working in the world’s poorest nations with basic, antenatal information that could save thousands of lives.

The device, as big as a computer mouse, works in a similar way to existing ultrasound scanners, using pulses of high frequency sound to build up a picture of the unborn child on the computer screen, according to a Newcastle statement. However, unlike the technology used in most hospitals across Britain costing anywhere from 20,000-100,000 pounds, the scanner created by Jeff Neasham and research associate Dave Graham at Newcastle can be manufactured for as little as

30-40 pounds. Tested by experts in the Regional Medical Physics Department at the Freeman Hospital, part of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the scanner produces an output power that is 10-100 times lower than conventional hospital ultrasounds. “Here in the UK, we take these routine, but potentially lifesaving, tests for granted,” explains Neasham, a sonar expert based in the University’s School of Electrical and

Electronic Engineering. “Imaging to obtain even the simplest information such as the child’s position in the womb or how it is developing is simply not available to women in many parts of the world,” Neasham said. “We hope the very low cost of this device and the fact that it can run on any standard computer made in the last 10 years means basic antenatal imaging could finally be made available to all women,” Neasham added. Job stress can lead to a heart attack LONDON: Being bossed around in a stressful job raises chances of a heart attack by 25 per cent, warn researchers. They said workers who feel over-pressured yet powerless are more at danger than counterparts who suffer less stress. Their findings are based on 2,00,000 workers, including civil servants to factory workers. “Our findings indicate that job strain is associated with a small but consistent increased risk of experiencing a first coronary heart disease event, such as a heart attack,” said Mika Kivimaki, professor at the University College London (UCL), who led the study, medical journal The Lancet reports. Previous research has suggested stress at work can trigger heart problems but there have been conflicting results. The UCL investigation pooled results from 13 studies in Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands and Sweden between 1985 and 2006. All the men and women taking part completed questionnaires about their jobs, workload, deadlines and freedom to make decisions. None had suffered a heart attack before providing the details, according to the Daily Mail. Over an average follow-up period of 7.5 years, researchers recorded 2,356 cases of heart disease. These included hospital admissions due to heart attacks and deaths from coronary failure. Kivimaki said job stress may account for a “notable proportion” of heart problems in the working population. He said that stress reduction would have a much smaller impact than tackling either lack of exercise or smoking, which had a negative effect 10 times greater. IANS

‘Asthmatic child may have anxiety’ Y oung children with severe or persistent asthma are more likely to develop many common mental health problems like anxiety and depression, a study says. University of Western Australia psychologist and study co-author Monique Robinson said their findings

build on previous studies which have found that as the severity of asthma increases, so do problems such as anxiety and depression. "We were interested in understanding the

link between asthma in early childhood and mental health problems later on as little is known about the relationship," Robinson said. The study used

data from the Raine Study to determine whether children who had asthma at five years were vulnerable for mental health problems. The research found that having asthma at age five had a higher vulnerability for anxiety and depression related disorders. IANS

t’s going to be a rare Friday at box-office which will be be dictated by women. Three of the five films lined up for release — Heroine, Avunu and Charulatha — revolve around the lives of female protagonists. It’s certainly a coincidence that all these films have fallen on the same weekend and an interesting one at the same time. The biggest release of them all is going to be Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine starring Kareena Kapoor in lead role. It’s one of the most awaited films of the year and all eyes are on Kareena Kapoor who’s the star attraction of the film. Last year, she had replaced Aishwarya Rai, who was Madhur Bhandarkar’s first choice to play the role. But the real question is, will Kareena Kapoor end up doing a Vidya Balan, in Dirty Picture, and pull the crowds to the theatres? Among the other two films, Ravi Babu’s suspense thriller Avunu has managed to capture people’s attention with its

innovative posters and theatrical trailer. Suresh Babu and PVP Cinemas are backing the film which has given the film an edge at box office. Poorna has played the lead role and it’s her first Telugu film since Seema Tapakai. In a recent interview, Ravi Babu confessed that the film is based on a real incident which Yami Gautam had narrated to him. On the other hand, Priyamani will be seen as conjoined twins in Ponkumaran’s Charulatha. The horror film is a remake of a Thai film named Alone. Geetha Films is distributing the film. All the films are going to hit the screens on September 21 along with Vennela 1 ½. It’s going to be a chaotic weekend at box-office, but at the same time, it has left the audience spoilt for choice.

odels are beautiful, and they can act, says Esha Gupta, who believes that the transition of a model from the ramp to celluloid is often successful because the audiences like to watch beautiful faces on screen. “Look at Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif... they are one of the best actresses we have these days, and they all used to be models. The bottomline is that everyone wants to just see beauty and models are beautiful,” Esha said. “At the end of the day, you need to be presentable, because the janata wants to see a beautiful girl on screen, who they can go home and imagine about. That’s how it works around the world. “When I saw Bipasha Basu coming out of the water in Jism, wearing that white outfit, I being a girl drooled on it. I imagined what I’d look like in that scene. It’s just that models are good looking, and we get a chance, we are well aware of the industry, focus well, do our acting course and enter the industry,” added the 26-year-old. KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

LAS VEGAS FIGHT

Pacquiao tidies up for 4th Marquez fight The two boxing warriors kicked off a three-city promotional tour on Monday by staging a news conference at the Beverly Hills Hotel. BEVERLY HILLS: Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao won’t have to worry about suffering from jet lag in the run up to his fourth fight against Mexican dynamo Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao says he is making major changes to his preparations this time for the December 8 non-title fight at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Instead of starting training camp in his native Philippines then shifting to trainer Freddie Roach’s Wild Card gym in Hollywood for final weeks, Pacquiao plans to do all his sparring at the southern California facility. “No days will be wasted travelling between training camps in the Philippines and California,” Pacquiao said Monday. The tour continues with another news conference Wednesday in New York. The contest at the MGM’s Grand Garden Arena will be the fourth fight in the intense rivalry between the two boxing champions. Pacquiao says this time he won’t make the mistake of underestimating Marquez when they square off in the non-title fight. “I underestimated him in our last fight,” said Pacquiao. “I will make the most of every training day to prepare for Juan Manuel.” Between them Pacquiao and Marquez have won world titles in 12 weight divisions. The Grand Garden was the scene of their first and third fights. Pacquiao (54-4-2m, 38 KOs) defeated Marquez in a majority

Froome pulls out of time-trial LONDON: Chris Froome has withdrawn from the midweek time-trial at the world road championships to focus on Sunday’s road race, British Cycling have confirmed. He wants more time to recover ahead of Sunday’s 261km road race in Limburg, Netherlands when Mark Cavendish will ride in defence of his title. The Team Sky rider was Tour de France runner-up behind Bradley Wiggins in July, won Olympic time-trial bronze behind his compatriot and was fourth in the Tour of Spain, which finished on September 9. Froome’s non-participation means Alex Dowsett is Britain’s sole entrant in the 45.7km elite men’s time-trial on Wednesday.

Marquez had taunted Pacquiao with claims that he was the true winner of their first two clashes — a 2004 draw and a 2008 rematch. “I am very excited to be fighting Manny again,” Marquez said Monday. “I beat him the first three fights but did not get the decision; this time I will beat him again and I also will get the victory officially.” Pacquiao’s seven-year, 15bout win streak, was snapped in June when he lost a controversial split decision to Palm Springs boxer Tim Bradley. Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KOs) is

one of a handful of Mexican boxers to have won world titles in four different weight classes. He lost his World Boxing Council title in the 2008 rematch with Pacquiao by a split decision that was decided by just one point on the judges’ scorecards. “This fight I truly believe will be the best of the four that these two great warriors have engaged in. After Pacquiao won a close decision from Marquez, both Pacquiao and Marquez want to win decisively to erase any doubts,” said boxing promoter Bob Arum. AFP

TWENTY20 WORLD CUP

T20 WC to get under way Mahela Jayawardene’s men will take the field in Hambantota with hopes high that they can end a 16-year wait for their second global title in front of their home crowd. SHAHID HASHMI Agence France-Presse HAMBANTOTA, Sri Lanka: Hosts Sri Lanka open cricket’s World Twenty20 against Zimbabwe Tuesday, kicking off the country’s biggest ever sports event -- and just three years after the end of a bloody civil war. Mahela Jayawardene’s men will take the field in Hambantota, the southeastern home town of President Mahinda Rajapakse, with hopes high they can end a 16-year wait for their second global title in front of their cricket-obsessed fans. The match, starts a threeweek cricket fiesta involving 12 teams in coastal Hambantota, hill town Pallekele and the capital Colombo, where the fourth World Twenty20 champions will be crowned on October 7. The tournament offers the “Teardrop Island” the chance to showcase its lush landscapes, beaches and temples, and turn the page on the 37-year ethnic conflict that claimed up to 100,000 lives. In 2009, Rajapakse’s government declared victory over the Tamil Tiger rebels, a group notorious for suicide bombings. The brutal final offensive prompted a UN Human Rights Council resolution against Sri Lanka earlier this year. “The T20 World Cup programme will provide an excellent platform to endorse the new Sri Lanka brand during the next three weeks,” said Nivard Cabraal, the central bank governor. “I am confident that this trend will continue in the future, and those so-called international calls for (war crimes) investigation will fade away,” he told AFP. Sri Lanka start the tournament as marginal favourites, although predictions are notoriously difficult in cricket’s shortest format, which has revolutionised the sport and divided opinion since its introduction in 2003. finals,” skipper Jayawardene said. “I’d rather be in that situation than being knocked out in earlier rounds.” Defending champions England arrive with a youthful squad shorn of star batsman Kevin Pietersen, who is in international exile after a sequence of bust-ups with team management. South Africa, the number one Test team, are seeking their first ever limited-overs world title, while the powerful West Indies would be a popular winner. The World Twenty20 is the one major trophy to elude Australia. India, schooled in Twenty20 cricket in the lucrative Indian Premier League, won the inaugural event in 2007, while mercurial Pakistan will hope to reprise their 2009 title run. The teams have been divided into four pools of three for the preliminary league, with the top two from each advancing to the Super Eights round. If the seedings go to plan, fans can expect exciting cricket in the Super Eights -- a week-long race to the semis and final. England, the West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand are seeded to meet in group one of the Super Eights, with the top two teams making it to the semifinals. Group two is already being billed as the “Group of Death”, with arch-rivals India and Pakistan seeded to face Australia and South Africa. INDIA VS PAKISTAN

Kamran, Malik see Pakistan through

Chasing 185, Pakistan appeared to be out of contention at 91 for five. But Akmal and Malik turned the game with an unbroken stand of 95 off 46 balls. KULDIP LAL Agence France-Presse COLOMBO: Kamran Akmal smashed an unbeaten 92 off 50 balls as Pakistan came from behind to defeat India by five wickets in a warm-up match for the World Twenty20 on Monday. Pakistan, chasing India’s commanding 185-3, appeared to be out of contention when they lost five wickets by the 12th over with just 91 runs on the board at the Premadasa stadium. But Akmal and former captain Shoaib Malik turned the game around with a brilliant unbroken stand of 95 off 46 balls that helped Pakistan beat the shell-shocked Indians with five balls to spare. while off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed four wickets for 23 runs. Some 3,000 Sri Lankan fans watched the arch-rivals battle

out in the middle in the only warm-up match to be beamed live by the host broadcasters of the World Twenty20 that opens on Tuesday. “We knew that if India could post a huge total, so could we,” said Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez. “Kamran was exceptional, and Malik’s experience also helped.” Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the batting worked well, but that the bowlers needed to contain runs on these kind of easy-paced wickets. “It was not really a bad game for us,” he said. “We have got to work on a few things with our bowling.” India and Pakistan are drawn in different groups for the preliminary league, but are seeded to meet in the Super Eights round in Colombo on September 30.

T20 WARM-UP

Ireland defeat Bangladesh COLOMBO: Ireland have completed their World Twenty20 preparations with a tight fiverun win over Bangladesh in Colombo, reported The Guardian. Having seen off Zimbabwe last weekend, William Porterfield’s side got the better of a higher-class of opposition, successfully defending a total of 164 for six. A thrilling 71 from just 41 balls by the opener Paul Stirling was the highlight of their innings. Ed Joyce chipped in with a more considered 39 to boost the total further and despite a knock of 52 from Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh were unable to reach their target. The occasional spin of Kevin O’Brien, who registered figures of three for 24, eventually put the skids on their charge, which had looked as though it would be in pursuit of a higher score when Ireland rattled off 40 runs in the first four overs. Porterfield was the first man to go when he was run out with the score on 46, with Stirling and Joyce then sharing a secondwicket stand of 64 before the latter was bowled by Elias Sunny. Joyce carried on before being snared by Mashrafe Mortaza who ended with two for 33.

COLOMBO: England had to withstand the threat of Michael Hussey to earn a nine-run victory over Australia in their World Twenty20 warm-up at Nondescripts CC, reported The Guardian. Stuart Broad’s side appeared on track to coast to a fifth successive win over Australia this year but Hussey, who hit 71, was the vital missing ingredient during England’s 4-0 one-day series trouncing of Australia two months ago. “No such thing as a ‘warmup’ game against Australia,” said Broad on Twitter. “Always tough battles so great to come out on

avid Hussey cannot command a place in Australia’s first-choice side for the World Twenty20 despite being the most prolific run scorer in T20 history. Hussey has fallen out of favour with the national selectors over the past few games, having been dropped from the third match against Pakistan in Dubai earlier this month and left out of Australia’s two warm-ups against New Zealand and England in Sri Lanka, according to the website cricinfo.com.

top. Lads played really well in good heat!” Hussey kept his team’s hopes alive after wrecking the young spinner Danny Briggs’ figures with three consecutive sixes over midwicket. With the first, the left-hander brought up his 45ball fifty, and he added another boundary for good measure in the slow left-armer’s final over. However Broad returned to have Hussey lbw, and from there Australia ran out of steam to finish short of 172 for six. Alex Hales, with 52 runs, was key to that total, after England were put in to bat on a steamy morning and a stodgy pitch.

City in Madrid to win, says Mancini MADRID: Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini on Monday said his side had come to the Santiago Bernabeu meaning business, with three points the aim when they face Real Madrid in their opening Champions League Group D match on Tuesday. “We have come here to win,” he said at the eve-ofgame press conference here. “Of course it will be difficult but we absolutely have that ambition because this group is extremely challenging and 10 points might not be enough to get through.” Last season, Mancini’s City were eliminated at the group

stage despite hitting the 10-point mark that has often been seen as the minimum required to progress in the past. “Our first match, tomorrow (Tuesday) in Madrid, will be very important, not just in terms of the result, but also because of the mentality it will give us for the games that follow,” added the Italian. Meanwhile City’s Spanish international winger David Silva said that the poor form shown by their opponents so far in La Liga — they have taken just four points from four games and lost at Sevilla at the

weekend — could work against the English champions. “This is a dangerous match for us because we could well waken the beast that is sleeping somewhere inside them,” said Silva. AFP

Ba gives Newcastle 2-2 draw

LIVERPOOL: Senegal striker Demba Ba rescued a 2-2 draw for Newcastle as his late equaliser left Everton to pay the price for a crucial blunder by the officials at Goodison Park on Monday. Ba came off the bench at halftime with Newcastle trailing to Leighton Baines’ first half goal and he made an immediate impact with the equaliser one minute into the second period. But Everton were denied a clear goal when Victor Anichebe’s header appeared to cross the line after being pushed onto the bar by Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper. David Moyes’ side, who had already had a Marouane Fellaini strike harshly ruled out for offside, were understandably furious with referee Mike Jones and his assistants, yet it seemed they would still take the points when Anichebe fired home with only two minutes remaining. However, Ba had the last word when he bundled in his second equaliser of the night in the 90th minute. There was more bad news for Everton as Croatia striker Nikica Jelavic hobbled off with a first half knee injury. “We played well and we thought we had other goals in the game but for some reason or not they weren’t given,” Moyes said. “For Anichebe’s effort the linesman was looking right along the line, that’s his job and he didn’t see it. “I thought we deserved the win, sometimes you need decisions to go your way but they didn’t go for us tonight.” Magpies manager Alan Pardew added: “I was proud of the second half because we were terrific, but the first half we lacked belief and I was shocked at how we played. “Not many teams would come back and respond in the way we did so all credit to the players.” AFP
