Cab driver abducts woman

yderabad city is proving deadly for women at night. In two chilling reminders of the situation, a vain bid was made to abduct a wife who was stranded with her husband on the road, and in another case a young woman was attacked at Kukatpally. Dhanalaxmi, 32, was returning home from a function with her husband on their bike at around midnight when the vehicle developed a snag in Attapur Ring Road. Finding it difficult to get alternative transport, he rang up his home to arrange a taxicab or car to pick them up. It was raining and the situation became difficult for the couple. However, instead of waiting idly for the vehicle, he went around searching for a work-

shop nearby. Meanwhile, a white Indica cab came the way and the driver, seeing the woman

alone stopped. Thinking that it was the car his household sent, she got in but suddenly realised that the

police patrolling vehicle “Rakshak’ was parked on the road near the station. The driver, preparing to alight, opened the driver door without looking for the oncoming traffic. Two students of Narayana college, riding a bike, came and smashed on to the opening window, lost balance and fell. The rider, identified as Atul Lohiya, died on the spot and his companion, Govind Jagu, suffered injuries. After the incident, angry students came in hoards and gathered before the police station demanding the arrest of

the driver. The police, however, had by then sent the driver away. Meanwhile, the police are trying to turn the table on the students. Both students are underage and the police are using this as the case of illegal driving to cover up their own folly. Assistant commissioner of police, Abids, B Limba Reddy told Postnoon that a case of accident was registered. However he did not say if the students are being put in the dock. car had a passenger and it was not sent by her home. She rang up her husband and told him she was abducted. He immediately got in touch with his home and verified that they had not yet sent a cab. They rushed to the spot in their car and tried to chase the cab but it had disappeared. Meanwhile, Dhanalaxmi heard the driver and his accomplice planning to take her to a lonely place in Gandipet Road and sexually assault her. She raised hell and began kicking them and shouting on top of her voice. The driver and his chum developed cold feet and after a while they dropped her somewhere on Gandipet Road and sped away. But for two hours she was in the car fighting the two men. In another incident, a 22year-old woman was seriously injured when some assailants attacked her near KPHB Kukatpally. It happened at 8.30 pm when she was walking home.

sub-inspector of Langerhouze police station and a constable were attacked by the organisers of an orchestra which was playing loud musics disturbing people in the neighbourhood. On getting complaints that the orchestra people were making life difficult, sub-inspector Shaikh Sabir constable Ravi Kumar reached the function hall. As the organisers defied the police, the SI and constable were in the process of confiscating the instruments when the mob attacked them. Both received minor injuries. A case has been registered and one man has been taken into custody in this connection, police said.

Body of young woman found in lake

T

he decomposed body of a woman, aged about 25 years, was fished out from the Kukatpally KPHB lake on Monday. According to the police the hands and legs were tied and it appears to be a case of strangulation. The police believe that she was murdered a few days back. This can be said due to the decaying body. No material enabling identification of the woman was found on her body and the police have flashed the news to all stations to help identify the victim and also the killers.

Unlike other parks, its appeal lies in the fact that it is swept and the plants are watered twice a day, keeping it clean and green at all times. There are five workers who maintain the park, and are quite dedicated to their work. Vellamma, who is one of the five workers, said “I really enjoy coming to the park myself. Sometimes I bring along my children to play while I clean the place up. It's nice to see that the residents use the dustbin to throw their trash, and do not litter the park. This really helps with the maintenance.”

RTA officials continue raids on travel agents

S

tate RTA officials continued for the second day today, searches of the private bus operators throughout the State following the directive of the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy. The CM’s orders came after the tragedy involving a Kaleshwari travels bus bound for Shirdi two days ago. The RTA officials raided bus operators in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Guntur, Rajahmundry, Vizianagaram and Hyderabad. The RTA officials are learnt to have found gross irregularities in the operation of buses. They have conducted raids on Kesineni, Kaleshwari, SVR, Padmavathi and Sri Krishna Travel agencies’ offices and identified that nine travel agencies were operating without permits. The searches have covered more than 300 operators across the State. There are some 600 travel agents. Eight teams under the joint transport commissioner G Panduranga Rao have been conducting raids on operators in Hyderabad. In Hyderabad, raids covered transport offices in Patancheru, LB Nagar and Shahpur. Rao told Postnoon that of the 30 seized, nine belong to Sri Kaleshwari. He said the travel operators were found to have no up-to-date list of passengers and each bus had extra seats which went unrecorded. NSS

Upset mantri flies to Thailand

While some others skip office and visitors all in an attempt to overcome the bypoll debacle

POLITICS Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

T

he recently concluded byelections seem to have had a tremendous impact on AP ministers who all found their campaign efforts go down the drain. While most ministers are yet to recover from the shock, some are trying to get back to their official work. Postnoon’s reality check of the State’s governing headquarters — Secretariat — revealed some interesting facts. Minister for secondary and intermediate education K Parthasarathi, who aggressively campaigned for the party candidate in Tirupati, is yet to come to

K Parthasarthi terms following the party’s defeat. Unable to bear the shock, he left for Thailand on June 16 for a weeklong tour. The minister is expected to return on June 22. When this correspondent inquired why the min-

Dharmana Prasada Rao ister had left so suddenly, the instant reply from his aide was, “it was a personal tour with family members”. But he did explain that the minister was so anguished because of the bypoll debacle that he immediately wanted a vacation

to come out of the rude shock! On the other hand, minister for primary education S Sailajanath, who was given the responsibility of ensuring two party candidates’ victory in his own district of Anantapur is yet to visit his official chamber. The staff of his peshi told Postnoon that the minister came to the Secretariat but could not visit his chamber. “Sir came to the Secretariat immediately after the election and met the Chief Minister. But he did not come to his office,” Sailajanath’s aide revealed. However, there are some exceptions among these ministers. Minister for roads and buildings Dharmana Prasada Rao, whose brother Dharmana Ramdas lost the election at the hands of another brother and YSR Congress candidate Dharmana Krishna Das in

Narsannapeta Assembly segment, discharged his duties. However, he left the office before the hours of visitors’ time. Minister for agriculture Kanna Laxminarayana, who is facing CBI enquiry into the issuance 26 controversial Government Orders along with five other ministers, too visited his officer but barely spent any time there. He later went to C block to meet the Chief Minister. On the other hand, Cabinet ministers from Telangana region seemed active in discharging their duties on Monday. The peshis of ministers J Geeta Reddy, Prasad Kumar and DK Aruna brimmed with visitors. Later in the evening, some of the ministers like DK Aruna, K Muralimohan and P Balaraj were seen loitering around the CM’s office and huddling with media persons.

ACB quizzes suspended judge Pattabhirama Rao A

After vaastu alterations, TDP turns to prayers Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com

T

he Telugu Desam Party, which has been out of power for the last eight years, had desperately attempted to woo voters in the 2009 general election. But the fate has different things in store for the Opposition party. After the general elections, the son of former CM NTR, Balakrishna told his brother-in-law and TDP chief N Chandra Babu Naidu that the party was going through the rough patch due to certain faults in the vaastu of the party headquarters. He also suggested that the vaastu be set right for the party to fare better. Soon after, TDP officials sprung into action to set right the vaastu dosh and the main entrance of the party office, consisting of a massive metal gate was removed as per the directions of vaastu pundits.

It was also advised that the party chief should enter the premises from the rear entrance, as it was auspicious for the part. Although all the said instructions were carried out in the hope that the party would fare better, the recent bypoll results came as a huge let down for the party and Babu alike. Commenting on this, senior TDP leader and former Saap chairman, PR Mohan said that vaastu nivaran was done as part of Hindu tradition and not for electoral victories. “The main objective behind undertaking construction according to vaastu was to follow the tradition. There is nothing much to read into it,” he said. But many other leaders on condition of anonymity admitted that the changes were made to drive away bad luck that has been haunting TDP since 2004. According to sources, TDP is also planning hold special pujas to bounce back to power.

nti-Corruption Bureau officials today questioned suspended CBI Judge D Pattabhirama Rao, accused of taking bribe to grant bail to former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy in the Obulapuram Mining Company case. A team of ACB officials reached Rao’s house here this morning and took him to their office, where his interrogation is underway. ACB director-general B Prasada Rao told PTI, “He (Pattabhirama Rao) is being questioned by ACB officials.” The ACB has already arrested retired Judge PV Chalapathi Rao and Pattabhirama Rao’s son T Ravi Chandra in the cash-forbail-scandal. Amid allegations of illegal

gratification and corruption against Pattabhirama Rao, the Andhra Pradesh High Court suspended him on May 31 while transferring the case to ACB which registered a case against Pattabhirama and seven others including Chalapathi Rao and Janardhan Reddy’s elder brother and Bellary city MLA Gali Somashekhar Reddy. On a tip-off that a deal was allegedly struck between Janardhana Reddy, the judge and others, the CBI had recovered cash of nearly `1.60 crore from five lockers here, the keys of which were allegedly in possession of Pattabhirama’s son Ravi Chandra. The CBI had also seized `1.14 crore from the possession of T Balaji Rao, brother of Chalapathi Rao. The CBI handed over documents pertaining to the matter to ACB. PTI

Lack of B-colleges drives students out Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET) results were declared last week. Aspirants, despite getting a good score, are migrating to another state to study business management. Postnoon finds out why

EDUCATION Sudeshna Koka sudeshna.k@postnoon.com

H

yderabad is one of the top destinations for students, as it's home to some of the best designing, engineering, law and medical colleges of the country. But it miserably fails in MBA courses. The top 30 MBA colleges are all located elsewhere the country. “I wanted to study MBA here but Hyderabad does not have a single MBA college that can stand up to the best in the country. So I have taken a one-year break and I am preparing for other MBA colleges based outside AP,” says Ragini C, MBA aspirant. However, not all are as lucky as Ragini. Many students are compelled to stay back and settle for local colleges; no matter they do not match the best MBA colleges in other states, and therefore, have low placement record. “My parents were not comfortable sending me to

another state, which is why I had to stay back and study here. I work for an educational website and our website itself has more than 300 MBA colleges but the standard no where matches up IIMs or other top MBA colleges. It’s unfortunate but we don’t have a choice,” says Sri Kamalam. City does have hundreds of MBA colleges but students claim that most of them do not have good faculty and have a poor placement ratio. This year the Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET) turnout was low as compared to last year. Last year, about 1.4 lakh candidates took the test but this year the number of candidates was 10% less. There are 23 universities in AP for MBA/MCA courses and number of seats in these universities are about 63,000. This year students who appeared for ICET and got a good score are not sure of taking up admission in the City. “I got a good score but it would be waste of time and money if I study in Hyderabad. Colleges like

Bhavans and Badruka Institute of Management Studies have bad placement, and other private college charge up to `4 lakhs. Curiously, some “top colleges” are not even recognised!” says Anandita Swith. “As compared to other cities like Bangalore and Mumbai we surely do not have many MBA colleges. Though, the times are changing, now Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) has opened a branch in Hyderabad and IMT Ghaziabad is also planning to open a branch in near future. So seeing the developments we can expect changes in Hyderabad soon,” says K Ramnath, course director TIME institute. This is the state of the city which despite have a huge student population lacks MBA college and leaves students with no choice but to go to another state or choose another career option; surely a cause of concern.

unday’s showers brought much respite from the scorching summer heat but it also revealed the unpreparedness of the City. A single heavy wet spell turned the City into an open drainage and gaping manholes into water fountains in many parts of the twin cities. The less said about the lowlying areas, the better. However, the civic authorities blame the general public for not having the basic discipline to use public roads. “There is no incomplete work from our part. We started the repair works in many areas in the month of March and completed them by the May end. The manholes or the nallahs are choked due to debris and plastic discarded by the public. Choked drains naturally flood the area,” said Suresh Kumar, chief engineer, maintenance. “The GHMC, HMWS&SB, and the fire department are working together to ensure quick response to emergency situations. But at the same time citizens need to be cautious too. It’s not an easy task for us too and without the help

of citizens the problems related to monsoon can’t be solved,” he adds. With the monsoons come the usual problems like waterlogging, traffic jams and drainage water submerging on roads in many areas of the City. It’s not the slums or low-lying areas, but the main roads of upscale areas like Banjara Hills, Jubliee Hills, Hitec City that are

filled with mud and slush with the onset of monsoons. Upmarket localities are not immune to these civic problems. Following the showers on Sunday and Monday, traffic came to a standstill in many areas like Raj Bhavan Road, Tolichowki, Chaderghat, Chirag Ali lane, Hakim Shah Colony, Khairatabad Petrol bunk, Nampally, MJ market, Aghapura and Langer Houz. Incidents of trees being uprooted were also reported from many areas. Power supply was tripped in many areas. There are six teams working 24x7 to tackle any unfortunate event or act based on the complaints received from the

The HMWS&SB constituted 21 emergency response teams in areas like Goshamahal, Gudimalkapur, Red Hills, Narayanaguda, Sahebnagar, Qutbullapur, Sainikpuri, Nacharam, Chandanagar, Bhojagutta, Marredpally, Kukatpally Housing Board,Patancheru, Rajendranagar and SR Nagar.

he showers in the evening might have brought a smile on many faces and provided them some much needed respite from the scorching summer heat. But techies now fear the bumpy rides they will have to face every day as the City roads are not yet monsoon ready. For more than three lakh IT professionals who travel daily from Hitec City to other parts of City, the roads are no less than a nightmare. Potholes, water logging, open manholes and overflowing drains are not uncommon. The worst hit stretches are the under bridge near Hitec City station, Hafizpet stretch, Gachibowli Junction, the road opposite Shilpakala Vedika and the Kothaguda Square in Kondapur. “For the last four years I have been travelling on these routes on a daily basis

and the problem remains the same. Every time it rains most of the roads in the area turn into mini ponds and travelling through these roads on a two-wheeler is no less than an adventure. The open manholes prove to be dangerous too as in many cases they have turned into death traps,” said Suresh Kumar, a techie in Wipro. Potholes, chipped off speed-breakers, uneven road surface and sudden troughs on the roads make commuting a challenge. However, GHMC officials say, “We have completed patching and repairing roads in May itself. We have laid tar on many flyovers and damaged roads. We have identified more than 300 places where the road conditions are bad and carried out repairs too,” said Suresh Kumar, chief engineer, maintenance wing. “While the GHMC authorities claim of repairing roads, it is so shoddy it gets washed out by a mere

drizzle. The roads get slippery and are risky to negotiate. The worst are the areas that are under construction. Besides, traffic is a major issue,” said Aditya Sharma, quality analyst. “The potholes are potential death traps for motorists and pedestrians alike. There are no signboards or even barricades to warn motorists,” adds Aditya. Areas like BachupallyMiyapur, NizampetMiyapur and KukatpallyMadhapur roads are the worst affected. Commuters complain that most of the roads are damaged and bumpy with potholes and open manholes. And driving on these roads damage their vehicles apart from welcoming health problems like back pain and spinal problems. The situation turns worse for the motorcyclists who are often splashed by a speeding four wheeler or when their vehicle gets stuck in the open manhole leading to traffic snarls.

Many citizens can be seen risking their life by foot-boarding overcrowded buses

Disregard for rules has become the order of the day. Buses are overcrowded and stop in the middle of the road, bring traffic to a standstill. Drivers who go about their business in the most rash and negligent manner have ensured that the City has earned the dubious distinction of being a traffic anarchist’s dream.

The company manufactures essential oils and herbal products under the brand name of Ancient Living. Talking about business idea, Kalyani says, “I was introduced to essential oils in early childhood. My parents used to grow lemongrass in our own farm. There is an interest towards natural products even while I was in the IT industry. The main aim of the company is to bring the ancient and natural products to the public, who are carried away with the chemical-based products. “These are 100 per cent natural oils taken from different plant extracts like lavender, lemongrass, Tulsi. When we inhale an essential oil, the smell stimulates the brain’s limbic system which triggers feeling and affects our moods. “Listening to customer has also helped us to grow. Earlier, we used to sell Amla, Brahmi in separate packs. Where in, the customer used to mix these powders to make it a paste and apply. They requested us to bring in the Mix products to the market. We brought the Mix in to the market which was instant success,” she says. “The business needs time to become a brand as we are not following conventional marketing and distribution practices. The company had invested over `20 lakh over time to build the infrastructure. It has 55 natural products and also wants to bring massage oils very soon.

BRICS explore currency options World leaders India, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa Monday explored mechanisms, such as swap arrangement and a reserve fund. to protect their currencies against external risks. The mechanisms were discussed during an informal meeting hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh among the leaders of BRICS nations, according to a statement issued Monday.

Under swap arrangements, one country with a weaker currency seeks to hedge the exchange rate risk by swapping it with another currency with the hope that the transaction will be settled when the situation improves. The leaders primarily discussed the current global financial crisis. AFP

World leaders and the IMF tried to inject fresh confidence into the flagging global economy on Monday at a G20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico dominated by Europe's growth-sapping debt crisis. To build confidence in the frail global economy, the Group of 20 leading economies vowed to "act together to strengthen recovery and address financial market tensions," according to a draft communique obtained by AFP. The optimistic language, however, could do little to hide the dismal economic backdrop, with Spain's skyhigh cost of borrowing stealing the focus after the brief respite provided by Greece's election result. Father beheads daughter JAIPUR: Enraged over his daughter's alleged relations with men, a father allegedly beheaded the married woman with a sword and flaunted the head in the village before surrendering himself to police in Rajasamand district. Manju, 20, was married three years back. She was not living with her husband and allegedly had illicit relations with other men, police said. She was caught with a man only a few days back. Her father Ogad was disturbed with her

activities. Last evening, Ogad beheaded Manju in Dungerji Ka Guda village in Charbhuja area of the district when both of them were alone at home. He then walked outside the home with the severed head in one hand and the bloodstained sword in the other, and surrendered at the Gomti police outpost under Kelva police station. The man was arrested and the body shifted to a local hospital for postmortem, the police added.

In another incident in Hanumangarh district, an alcoholic man repeatedly banged his twoyear-old daughter against the ground following heated arguments with his wife on Friday night. He also buried the body which was later exhumed by the police yesterday after the victim's mother's complaint. The culprit Dheelaram is absconding, the police said, adding, that the matter was under investigation. mqf=

PANAJI: The Basilica of Bom Jesus, one of Goa's most revered churches, will soon have an eco-friendly roof — thanks to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) which wanted visitors to the over 400-year-old building to have a "healthy" experience. The massive asbestos roof on the imposing laterite stone building will be replaced by eco-friendly galvanised sheet. The decision was taken on the recommendations of the ASI to ensure that tourists were not exposed to the risk of cancer due to exposure to asbestos, Savio Barretto of the Basilica of Bom Jesus told IANS. "Last year, the ASI had done the roof work and replaced a lot of older sheets

with new asbestos sheets. But in a recent meeting, officials informed us that people were protesting against the move and demanding that modern galvanised sheets be put up on the Basilica roof. We agreed," Barretto said. Built in 1604 and located a short distance from the capital Panaji, the Basilica of Bom Jesus attracts thousands of tourists and devotees every year. Until recently, the roof of the church was covered by clay Mangalore tiles. A few decades ago, heavy maintenance costs forced the authorities to switch from tiles and rafters to asbestos. The Basilica contains mortal remains of the Spanish saint St. Francis Xavier who brought Christianity to the region.

From wasteland, Taj Corridor to become Agra's lung AGRA: At last, the controversial Taj Heritage Corridor, sandwiched between the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, will be transformed from a wasteland into the city's green lung. The UP Forest Department has been told to draw up plans to green the 80acre dump yard and graveyard along the Yamuna river on which former chief minister Mayawati wanted to develop a commercial hub and amusement parks. But because the Archaeological Survey of India did not clear the project, the Supreme Court ordered its suspension in 2003. "Yes, the chief minister (Akhilesh Yadav) called me and told me to speed up efforts to green the neglected corridor. Funds will soon be available and work will begin," District Forest Officer NK Janoo said. Yadav has a background in environmental engineering. "But we have to follow all the directions of the Supreme Court,

high court and the Archaeological Survey of India," Janoo said. Once completed, the green stretch will be a new attraction for tourists.

THE SPRAWLING 80-ACRE PLATFORM, RECOVERED THROUGH DREDGING OF THE RIVER BED AND REFILLING OF THE OPEN SPACE, WAS LEFT UNFINISHED AFTER CORRUPTION CHARGES WERE LEVELLED AGAINST FORMER CM MAYAWATI. At present, the land is being used not only as a dumping ground for garbage but also as a place to bury bodies of children and aborted foetuses. The sprawling 80-acre platform, recovered through dredging of

the river bed and refilling of the open space, was left unfinished after corruption charges were levelled against Mayawati. The charges eventually brought down her government. The case against her has been

on for long, but the Taj Corridor continues to remain an eyesore. Scores of foreign tourists daily visit the site and take pictures that are not too flattering. Reports of the site being used as a burial ground have caused

concern. Dozens of graves can be seen with the huge stones and boulders used for identification. "While the Taj Corridor lies buried in the debris of politics, the platform is being used to bury dead children," say office-bearers of the 125-year-old Kshetra Bajaja Committee which manages the Taj Ganj crematorium called Mokshdham. Environmentalists have on several occasions expressed concern at the alarming pollution level in the Yamuna after hundreds of trucks of waste was littered around with carcasses of animals and bodies of children. With no official agency willing to take care of what's left behind in the corridor, locals have been using the site to their advantage. "While children play cricket and guides draw in tourists with all kinds of yarns, devotees come to pay obeisance to the river," said Pandit Gopi Ballabh Shashtri, a Yamuna devotee. f^kp

The assurance was given to Mukherjee who called up Sena chief Bal Thackeray and his son Uddhav Thackeray, the party executive president, on Monday, Sena sources said. Sena, the oldest ideological ally of BJP, was understood to be concerned over the approach of NDA to the presidential polls and disappointed about the fact that the alliance has not been able finalise its candidate. LOS CABOS: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said his government is determined to take “tough” decisions, including on controlling subsidies, to reverse the expansion of the fiscal deficit, even as he expressed confidence of bringing back the rhythm of high growth of 8-9 per cent per annum. Concerned over the dip in India's economic growth, Singh said the public in the country is “impatient” for a return to high growth and faster jobs creation. He also said that steps were being taken to revive investor sentiment in the country. The Prime Minister addressed some critical issues relating to the slowdown in India's economy in his address during the Plenary Session of the seventh Summit of the Group of 20 developed and developing countries. "Like other countries, we too allowed the fiscal deficit to expand after 2008 to impart a stimulus. We are now focussing on reversing the expansion. This will require tough decisions, including on controlling subsidies, which we are determined to take," Singh told the galaxy of world leaders including US President Barack Obama. Beyond Borders

When Hairy met Suu Kyi LONDON: He is an unfashionable disc jockey from England known as the “Hairy Cornflake.” She is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning opposition leader, formerly under house arrest in Myanmar. And when they came together, something clicked. (Cue the saccharin, slow motion, running embrace.) That may sound like a hilariously awful Hollywood movie pitch — scrawled on the back of a cigarette packet, perhaps? In fact, it’s one of the lesser known chapters in Aung San Suu Kyi’s twodecade struggle against her country’s military rulers. Suu Kyi is widely recognized as one of planet earth’s most principled and stoic figures, for her refusal to abandon a fight that isolated her from her family, even as her husband died of cancer thousands of miles away in Oxford. She is now on a world tour, a victory lap of sorts, after finally winning both her freedom and a seat in parliament. So it came as a great surprise when it emerged that in her darkest hours she had drawn inspiration from Dave Lee Travis, an easy-listening radio presenter, whose career highlights include being named British “pipe smoker of the year” in 1982.

After her release last year she revealed in an interview that during her early years of house arrest she was an avid listener to the BBC’s World Service. She regularly looked forward to “A Jolly Good Show” — a music request broadcast hosted by none other than Travis. “I would listen to that quite happily because the listeners would write in and I had a chance to hear other people’s worlds,” she said. “It made my world much more complete.” The disc jockey’s role in inspiring the 66-year-old Nobel laureate will be acknowledged this week. Travis — nicknamed “Hairy Cornflake” because he has a beard and once presented the UK’s biggest breakfast radio show — will meet Suu Kyi at an official function in London. “I’m quite excited that I’m going to see her in person,” he told the London Times ahead of the meeting. “It’s so impossible to actually gauge what you’re going to say. I’m really desperate to meet her, because she seems like such a wonderful woman. “I won’t be at a loss for words. I’m just fascinated to hear more about her time [under house arrest] and how she came to listen to my program and what she liked

about it.” He added “The show was very light-hearted but it was something that caught the imagination of people around the world. I tried very hard to get the pronunciation right for words in the countries I was talking about.” The broadcaster’s interest in Myanmar’s political situation will doubtless be a surprise to his regular listeners, who are more accustomed to his enthusiasm for the middle of the road rock and pop that he has been playing since the 1970s and 80s. To be fair, Travis has drifted off the cultural radar for most people in Britain since his days as a primetime radio host. In 2001 the BBC cancelled his World Service slot, to the consternation of Suu Kyi. The Hairy Cornflake’s audience is now reduced to weekend listeners of Magic Radio, a local station based in Berkshire, west of London. In the intervening years, his dismissive style and outof-touch tastes have become a target for comedians inspired by a cultural legacy that includes a hit single about trucking, the first ever snooker-based radio quiz, and involvement in the UK’s drag car racing scene. dil_^imlpq

UPI reports that eight wolves are understood to have surrounded and attacked the 30-yearold woman shortly after she entered their enclosure alone. CNN explains that rescue workers and park employees were unable to reach the victim. “You can’t just go in to a pack of wolves,” the emergency services coordinator Jan Tengeborg said. “Police and ambulance staff couldn’t get close to the victim until later.” “She was so badly hurt in the attack that she died of her injuries,” a police spokesman for the Ostergotland district, where the Kolmarden park is located, is quoted as saying by Reuters. Police were at the scene investigating the incident but said they did not know what caused the attack, and there were no witnesses. The Sun says the same pack of wolves attacked TV naturalist Arne Weise when Kolmarden Wildlife Park opened in 2007. It is now one of the country’s most popular wildlife parks. dil_^imlpq

China creates model for sustainable urban living TIANJIN ECO CITY: At first glance, Tianjin Eco-City looks much like any other upscale Chinese urban development, with its rows of identical apartment blocks, wide roads and manicured verges. In fact, it is being touted as a model for sustainable living in this rapidly urbanising and heavily polluted country, whose congested, smog-choked cities are becoming increasingly unliveable. Many of its features — including well-insulated housing, waste recycling systems and solar-powered water heaters — are common in other countries, but remain rare in China, where sustainability has lost out in the rush to develop. Around 60 per cent of household waste will be recycled and much of the city’s electricity will come from renewable energy sources including wind, solar and geothermal power, while the transport system will rely on hybrid vehicles. Construction work on Tianjin Eco-City, about 150 kilometres east of Beijing, began in 2008 and although it will not be completed until 2020, about 60 families have

Workers install solar panels near Tianjin. moved in this year. They are the first guinea pigs in what the Beijing and Singaporebacked project’s deputy director Wang Meng calls an experiment to try to find ways for the country’s cities to be run in a more sustainable way. “In China, we have a very large population but we lack natural

AFP/ ED JONES

resources. The over-exploitation of those resources means that our cities cannot develop in a sustainable way,” said Wang. “The eco-cities are an experiment that is being conducted in that context. We are researching a sustainable approach to the industrialisation and urbanisation of the country through the eco-cities.”

The new city, which will include schools, medical facilities and business districts, covers 30 square kilometres of salt pans and former fishing villages near the busy industrial port of Binhai. Wang said Tianjin Eco-City was deliberately sited on a heavily polluted patch of land with no access to fresh water, to prove that such projects could work anywhere. Unlike other eco-cities, which are adapted from existing settlements, it is being built from scratch and will need to attract residents from nearby cities such as Beijing and Tianjin, about 40 kilometres away. Xie Kai, a 30-year-old entrepreneur who supplied the flooring for some of the new apartment complexes, moved to the city in March with his parents and young family after buying a flat at a preferential rate. He says he was attracted by the city’s eco-friendly credentials, but these were not the prime consideration — business opportunities, transport and education facilities for his young son were also important. “Education and transport are two big strong points here. You are

near Beijing, which is only 100 kilometres away, and Tianjin is a big city that has very good educational facilities,” he told AFP. Tianjin Eco-City is not the first such project in China. In 2005, China and Britain agreed to collaborate on building the world’s first so-called “eco-city” on an island off Shanghai. Dongtan Eco-City was dubbed a “city of the future” and aimed to provide virtually carbon-neutral living for up to 10,000 people from 2010, when it was to have been showcased at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. But the deadline slid amid claims of corruption after the ouster of Chen Liangyu, the former Shanghai Communist party chief who was convicted for graft in 2008, and the city has still not been completed. Plans for dozens of other lowcarbon “eco-cities” and towns are springing up around the country, as developers rush to cash in on the green movement and government authorities seek to attract foreign investors to their regions. ^cm

Around the World Dharun Ravi gets to stay in US TRENTON: Dharun Ravi, a former Rutgers University student, convicted of using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate will not be deported to his native India, according to federal immigration authorities. Twenty-year-old Dharun Ravi is due to be released from the Middlesex County Jail on Wednesday after serving 20 days of a 30-day jail sentence. He was convicted this year of 15 criminal counts, including bias intimidation and invasion of privacy, for using a webcam to see his roommate kissing another man in September 2010. Days later, the roommate, Tyler Clementi, threw himself to his death off the George Washington Bridge. The issue of deportation has hung over the case. Ravi was born in India, lived there until he was 5 years old and remains a citizen, though he is in the United States legally. Foreign citizens convicted of crimes in the United States can face deportation, usually after they complete their prison or jail terms. Last year, Ravi rejected a plea deal under which prosecutors would have sought to protect him from being deported. Ravi could have received up to 10 years in prison. His supporters argued for leniency in part to make it less likely that he would be deported. mqf

Obama, Putin call for end to Syria violence

AFP/ JEWEL SAMAD

DAMASCUS: US President Barack Obama and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin called on Monday for an “immediate” end to the Syria conflict as 94 deaths were reported in a worsening artillery pounding of cities. The call by the rival powers was made as Russia reportedly prepared to send two warships with marines to its naval base in Syria where UN monitors have suspended their patrols because of escalating violence. “In order to stop the bloodshed in Syria, we call for an immediate cessation of all violence,” the two leaders said in a statement after meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico. “We are united in the belief that the Syrian people should have the opportunity to independently and democratically choose their own future,” the leaders said. Putin told reporters that he and Obama had found “many common points” on the 15month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. Obama said he and Putin agreed on the need for a “political process” to halt the conflict and had pledged to work with UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan on the crisis. But there was little sign they had agreed a way to end the conflict which monitors say has now cost more than 14,400 lives. The United States has voiced frustration at Russia’s blocking of UN Security Council moves against Assad. The head of the UN mission in

The United States, Britain and France are working on a new UN Council resolution in which they want to threaten sanctions against Assad. But Russia, Syria’s main international ally, and China have already blocked two resolutions which just hinted at measures. A British marine insurer, meanwhile, said it had cancelled cover for a Russian ship, the MV Alaed, following reports it was carrying Mi-25 helicopter gunships destined for Syria. “We have already informed the ship owner that their insurance cover ceased automatically in view of the nature of the voyage,” Standard Club said. The Daily Telegraph reported that the ship was stopped off the coast of Scotland.

LOS CABOS: President Barack Obama’s nominee for ambassador to Iraq has withdrawn from the running following claims of impropriety and opposition from Republicans. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said the White House regretted seeing Brett McGurk “withdraw his candidacy” but praised him as a “skilled diplomat” who had served tirelessly.

Ian Lafreniere said. Police believe 29-yearold Magnotta, dubbed the “Canadian psycho,” used an ice pick to stab Lin Jun — a Chinese student at Montreal’s Concordia University — sometime between May 24-25. The suspect is thought to have then carved up the victim’s body and filmed the act. A video that police believe shows the killing, dismemberment of the body and sexual interference with the corpse, was posted on the Internet. Police in Montreal were galvanized on May 29 when Lin’s torso was discovered in a suitcase by the trash outside an apartment along a busy highway. ^cm

Fair, free and forthright

Talk back Kalam acted wisely The former President APJ Abdul Kalam knows better than that to tag along with Mamata Banerjee and stand for President once again. He is an upright man and wishes not to be involved in political squabbles like the one over the presidential polls. It would have been an abomination had he contested and beaten, if he stands he deserves to win and with such possibilities unlikely, he has decided wisely. Sri Charan Musheerabad

Big deal, doc! Dr Shankar Rao may have predicted the debacle that the Congress faces even before the polls, but that was something anyone with commonsense would have guessed. A hugely popular leader… his unexpected demises… ‘unfair’ treatment meted out to his son and wife by those who used to cower before him… son breaks ways with father’s party and floats own party… son implicated in corruption cases… son and mother contesting bypolls riding on the sympathy factor… son’s party sweeps bypoll… What other ending can be fathomed of this story? Anirudh Singh Jubilee Hills

Shocker for TRS Such a turn of events was never expected by TRS. KCR was the undisputed leader of the Telangana issue. But the humiliating defeat at Mahbubnagar and the victory snatched by a dismal margin is proof that the people are losing faith in KCR and his party. His fast had made him undisputed leader of the cause by the inaction over the issue and the mere talk over it has brought down his stature in the eyes of the people. Now their option is to team with BJP. But I doubt that will make any difference. Venky Ameerpet

A secular Egypt? The Muslim brotherhood’s candidate Mohammed Mursi has been elected President of Egypt. This is a historic moment and a very significant one. Though Hosni Mubarak was a tyrant, he ensured that Egypt remained a secular nation. With the victory of the Mursi one interesting thing to watch is if they would let Egypt retain its secular nature. Though their role in raising the uprising against Mubarak is big, their secular credentials are yet to be proven. Hope they bring peace to Egypt. Rajeev R Secunderabad

How corrupt are voters? Hard Talk PK Surendran

C

handrababu Naidu is an honourable man. He means well, at least, that is what the ‘non-voting arm-chair techies’ keep blogging. “During his (Naidu’s) time Hyderabad was a world class city,” rues one and he vows to vote for him. Many communities too express the same opinion. Kerala Association for instance came out strongly for Naidu, who the leaders said had an eye and ear for all. Everywhere the TDP leaders seem to get a warm reception as is evident during his several “sweating yatras” in the pre-poll days. Why then the repeated rap on his knuckles? For answer don’t ask Naidu. He wish he knew. For this, a neutral well-wisher of Naidu should examine other circumstantial evidences. Before the search for answers, analyse the voting behavior of the latest by-polls. What sticks out like a sore thumb is the complete miss the voters gave to the issue of corruption. TDP was the only party that dared to put up a candidate on the point of corruption. Chikkala Ramachandra Rao, a fair name in the constituency, was made to represent Anna, denoting anti-corruption movement. Congress won. Elsewhere, Naidu, went hammer and tongs at Jaganmohan Reddy who, be believes, should long ago have been in a padded cell. And, the Congress, well, it is the mother of all corruption, he’s sure. Well, when the result came it was Naidu’s turn to get surprised. His corruption-loaded litany was a hit, all right, but a hit on his head! This is no problem of the TDP, really. We now know that the voters are becoming more and more selfish because they are made selfish by our vote-catching politicians. Remember stories of Mowgli? The man cub brought up by the animals also reflects some animal instincts, which is but natural, much like pets unwittingly show a tenor of human behavior. We get what we feed. If any lesson is to be learned in the latest by-elections, it is this: Voters’ behavior is ruled by two things: 1. the emotional issue in the election 2. What’s it for me? Voters are interested in knowing what is there for them. In this sphere the ruling party has an obligation to ensure that its welfare deeds reach the target group; and, not just reach, seen to have reached. For the

Editorials

F

Opposition, it becomes their bounden duty to prove the opposite…that the claims of the ruling party are baloney. While the Congress and the TDP forgot their dharma, the YSRC won on the point 1 alone.

Voters too cheeky? But listen to a couple of things that came forth in this election. The BJP candidate Chinna Yogaiah Yanam from Ongole constituency made a shocking revelation that many of the villages in Ongole Assembly constituency are demanding that the mainstream political parties dole out funds to construct religious places like temples, mosques and churches in their villages. “According to my information, the villagers of Pelluru Cherukumpalem villages have received huge sums of money for construction of religious structures from mainstream political parties like Congress and YSR Congress party. Both these villages are major Gram Panchayats with large number of

voters,” Yogaiah told Postnoon on Monday. According to Yogaiah, voters are seeing bypolls as an opportunity to fulfill their requirements. “You cannot fault voters for this. They have a need and this need is being fulfilled by political parties in exchange for their votes,” he hastens to add lest the voters turn against the party. Tailend: Humouring voters is as old as headcount democracy. A quarter century ago, when giving money was deemed a corrupt practice — which some conscientious candidates did not want to do but were compelled to join the crowd — a candidate in Surat, Gujarat, came up with a brilliant idea. He distributed a day before polling shopping coupons of values of Rs 50 and Rs 100. Departmental stores were beginning to become popular then. The election commission could not take action against it. Every law has a law breaker.

ITALY MUST LEARN FROM FRANCE Let law take its course

rance’s stand that let the law take its course in the case of one of its diplomat facing charges of raping his three-year-old daughter is commendable. Pascal Mazurie, Deputy Head of Chancery in the Consulate of France, Bangalore, was arrested following France’s refusal to interfere in the case as the man did not enjoy diplomatic immunity. Take the case of Italy who is involved in a row with India over arresting and indicting two Italian guards who shot dead two Indian fishermen off India’s southwestern coast on February 15 mistaking them for pirates. The incident happened in Indian waters, the men gunned down were Indians, yet Italy claims India cannot try them for their actions. It claims that the detention of the fishermen is illegal and has approached the Supreme Court challenging the detention. Italy’s concern over its citizens is understandable, but they must trust the system of the country whose citizens were wronged by theirs. Until evidence emerges that supports the detained Italians’ claim, they must let law take its course as France did.

Innovative Inductions Neha Alluri feedback@postnoon.com

“A

s soon as we receive the letter of appointment, we are assigned a buddy,” said Sruthi Penmatsa, a Business Analyst in Deloitte. “A buddy is typically a senior (a year or two older) who briefs us about the company. The induction procedure is four days long. On the first day,I was familiarised with the different departments, technologies of the company and was given an overview of the clients. The second day was when I got to know my colleagues. Deloitte strongly believes in networking. Many of their representatives of the different departments spoke to me. I was placed in several groups with other recruits. On the third day, I was told which service line I would be placed in (random placement). I was also told a lot about community service projects. The fourth day was when we discussed timings and training procedures. The training started on the fifth day. I am a campus recruit so I was trained for about two months. The buddy was always around for me to ask for help,” she said. “I had a one week induction process,” said Ragini, a former Ernst & Young employee. Ragini said she learned different aspects of Ernst & Young on each day. “On the first day I was told about The Big Four(PwC, KPMG, Deloitte and Ernst & Young). The second day, I was informed about the different system tools that are used everyday like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. The consultants and man-

agers spoke to us on the third day, telling us about the work they do. On the fourth day, I worked on understanding how different projects are carried out. On the last day, I was introduced to my team. Ragini said Ernst & Young also has the buddy system. We are assigned a person who acts like a mentor until we are comfortable,” she added. Similarly, Ruchi Gaur, a senior consultant at Sierra Atlantic, also mentions the buddy system. “At Sierra, we use the buddy system. The buddy is around for new recruits to get a feel of the company for around a month.” While some of these techniques are used by most companies to help new recruits adjust to the business environment, there some other strategies that ADP and Wells Fargo (and others) use that are not only different but also a great way to engage employees during the first week. ADP apparently uses a technique called Chaperone, which allows new employees to interact with the HR department. While the company puts forward its policies, the employees are also asked for their opinion and suggestions for ADP. Wells Fargo, another multinational company, uses a similar method called Coffee with HR that not only allows the newly recruited to learn about the policies and ethics of the company but also a chance for their voices to be heard. While informing new employees about a company is important,it’s also great that businesses consider employee advice at such an early stage.

Redefining the 4Ps PR TALK Madhu Joshi

E

veryone in the industry knows the 4Ps of marketing— Product, Place, Price & Promotion, stated by marketing guru Philip Kotler. In today’s ever growing scenario, I would like to redefine the Ps of marketing (with due respect to Kotler) and the 4 Ps would be People, People, People and People. People as customers, media, investors and employees. People = Customer: The customer rules and will continue to do so. Today, he has a variety of products and services to choose from. Creating customer value and loyalty are of great essence. Also brands need to connect at an emotional level with customers and also keep evolving to stay with ever changing trends. People=Media: Generating third party endorsements through media are a great credibility tool in marketing & Public relations. Media is and will continue to stay powerful, what we marketers need to remember is to be honest while imparting information to the media. People = Investor: With the growing need for expansions of businesses, investor relations are becoming crucial. Keeping the investor connected with organisation’s activities and being transparent in dealings ensures cordial relations. People= Employees: How effectively do we engage employees? Companies devote huge budgets to brand products and services externally. However, the value of branding with employees is a huge factor in the success of a business. The higher the level of employee engagement, the higher the chances for increased productivity, profits and customers. Engaging employees by organising events, effective internal communication, practicing vision and values of the company, goes a long way in employee engagement and loyalty. In all these 4 Ps, we see one common aspect— the human approach. Even as technology progresses and the world evolve, organisations and brands will be required to emotionally connect and engage with people. These 4 Ps will continue to drive every organisation’s business strategy.

We all love the rain for its aesthetic beauty as well as for the fun filled outings. One must be careful to avoid various parasitic and bacterial infections that can be caused by walking on water-logged roads

he sound of the first rain against our window pane, the lush gardens and people on the roads with colourful umbrellas and rain boots — for many of us, the monsoons is one season we all love. But this aesthetically pleasing season has its own pitfalls. While we love to get wet in the rain, the overflowing drains, stagnant water and speeding motorists who spray us while driving through a puddle tend to be a major put off. Walking on these roads can also cause health ailments. Walking through puddles with contaminated water (contains various forms of bacteria and virus) is said to allow worms to enter the blood stream. This usually occurs if you walk barefoot and could also happen due to inappropriate footwear. Dr VK Bhargava, senior consultant physician, Apollo Hospital, says, “Rain water as such is sterile, it is when it gets

contaminated that it causes infections. Normally walking through these areas just makes you dirty and you may get a cough and a cold. In severe cases it may cause parasitic infections such as leptospirosis which was seen during the Mumbai floods. This is common among farmers and those who work with drains and sewerage.” According to Dr Sunitha Sekhar Reddy, dermatologist, ADI clinics, “Some of the infections that may occur due to walking in the rain include, hookworm infections, bacterial and fungal infections, viral infections and toenail infections. Warts are the most common viral infections that are

caused by walking around barefoot.” The symptoms for these infections depend on where they occur and their intensity. According to Dr Sunitha, “Bacterial infections are generally represented by a swelling which is painful. Fungal infection occurs usually between the toes. When it comes to toe and nail infections, it usually takes a long time before any clear symptoms can be seen.” She mentions that if a person notices these symptoms then they should visit a doctor. These infections can be treated and cured easily. People with injuries as well as ailments such as diabetes should be cautious and take immediate action. Dr Bhargava says, “Walking through the contaminated water may cause various skin infections. One must also be careful to avoid

Precautions Now with the routine of our daily life staying indoors and away from these problems is easier said and done. These infections as such cannot be prevented. Dr Sunitha says, “One should wash their feet well with soap water. Shoes should also be exposed to the sun so that they dry. If possible one should sanitise the shoes with spirit.” Dr Bhargava suggests that as far as possible one should avoid getting wet and if we do need to go out then wear appropriate shoes such as gumboots. Shoes that absorb water should be avoided. Dr Bhargava also mentions that when one returns after walking in the rain it is important to wash, keep warm and dry ones feet. The main requirement is to keep dampness at bay as it can cause various infections. Follow these simple precautions and enjoy these monsoons with a splatter and a splash!

Lifestyle changes can stop type-2 diabetes WASHINGTON: Making lifestyle changes can prevent type-2 diabetes, simply, effectively and cheaply, a new study says. Diabetes is a chronic and complex disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood that arise due to problems with the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels. It is usually caused by an inability to produce insulin (type 1) or an inability to respond correctly to insulin (type 2). The study involved 230 people in poor, urban neighbourhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area cities. Contacted by phone about once a month, half of them received specific dietary guidance and other lifestyle counselling. After six months, those who had received the counselling had on average lost more weight, were consuming less fat, were eating more fruits and vegetables and showed more improvements in lowering in their blood triglycerides, a key risk measure for type 2 diabetes, the American Journal of Public Health reported. “Diabetes is not something you are necessarily going to get just because it runs in your family,” said Alka Kanaya, associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and senior study author. “It is very preventable, and lifestyle changes can really impact the onset of diabetes.” “You can do something about it,” said Anita Stewart, professor at the UCSF Institute for Health and Aging and the Centre for Aging in Diverse Communities, senior study co-author, according to a university statement. A major health concern in the US, diabetes of all types affect an estimated 8.3 percent of the U.S. population — some 25.8 million Americans — and cost U.S. taxpayers more than $200 billion annually. Previous studies have shown that counselling and other lifestyle interventions are effective at preventing type 2 diabetes, but those interventions have generally been designed for clinical settings and include separate sessions with health professionals. Ú`Ü~åÖáåÖ=éä~íÉÛë= colour helps you shed weight’ LONDON: Scientists have suggested an easy way out for those who want to shed those pounds. They should simply change the colour of their plates. People tend to take more generous helpings when the food they eat is of the same hue as the crockery on which it is placed, says a new study. When foods “blend in” with their background, people serve themselves 20 per cent more than if they were serving the same meal on a plate of contrasting colour. In the study, people were given either a red or a white dinner plate and led to one of two buffet tables offering pasta; one in tomato sauce, the other in cream sauce, the Telegraph reports. Those given crockery which “matched” their food - red for tomato sauce, or white for cream sauce - gave themselves helpings between 17 and 22 per cent larger than those with plates of contrasting

ellulitis is an infection that occurs on the skin and the tissues that are present below the skin. Cellulitis is usually caused by bacteria. The most common bacteria is the streptococci or staphylococci groups, which normally live on the skin’s surface. Damage to the skin such as a scratch or a wound allows bacteria to enter the tissues and cause an infection. However, any bacteria can cause cellulitis. Some people are more vulnerable to get cellulitis, or more likely to get complications. Complications are more common in diabetics or those whose immune system is weak. The symptoms include swelling, fever and chills. The most common and effective treatment for cellulitis are anti-biotics. For some an additional blood test may be required to diagnose the exact cause in terms of the particular bacteria that has caused it.

Brian Wansink, professor who runs Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab, said: “People will generally serve themselves far more on a large dinner plate than they would on a smaller one, because the eye is tricked. It seems that colour contrast is one way to block this illusion.” The research author said those trying to lose weight could help themselves by buying brightly coloured or dark plates, to provide contrast with common white foodstuffs such as pasta, rice and potatoes. Alternatively, green plates could be used as a way to trick children into eating more vegetables, he said. IANS

‘Soft drinks not linked to childhood obesity’ TORONTO: Soft drinks and other sweetened beverages don’t contribute to childhood obesity, though it may increase the risk factor among boys aged 6-11 years, says a new study. The study examined the link between beverage intake patterns of children and their risk for obesity. “We found sweetened drinks to be dominant beverages during childhood, but saw no consistent association between beverage intake patterns and overweight and obesity,” says Susan J Whiting, professor of nutrition and dietetics from Canada’s University of Saskatchewan, who led the study, the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism reports. “Food and beverage habits are formed early in life and are often maintained into adulthood. Overconsumption of sweetened beverages may put some children at increased risk for overweight and obesity,” said Whiting, according to a Saskatchewan statement. “Indeed, boys aged 6-11 years who consumed mostly soft drinks were shown to be at increased risk for overweight and obesity as compared with those who drank a more moderate beverage pattern,” added Whiting. The researchers determined beverage consumption patterns among Canadian children aged two years using cluster analysis where socio-demographics, ethnicity, household income, and food security were significantly different across the clusters. Data were divided into different age and gender groups. For this study the sweetened, lownutrient beverages, categorised according to Canada’s Food Guide, consisted of flavoured beverages, beverages with less than 100 per cent fruit juice, lemonades, soft drinks, and sweetened coffees or teas. She’s reportedly in talks with Bellamkonda Suresh to play one of the lead roles in the Telugu remake of Vettai starring Naga Chaitanya and Sunil. Kishore Kumar is directing the film. Sources close to the film unit have revealed that Aksha hasn’t signed the film yet, but she’s among the top contenders to pair up with Sunil. Few days ago, Aksha told Postnoon, “After Kandireega, I took a break to concentrate on my studies. Although I was approached for quite a few films, most of the roles were more or less similar to what I had done in Kandireega.” Currently, she’s acting a Telugu film tentatively titled Saindhavudu starring Srikanth.

he is fairly new to the industry but Richa Chadda, who was seen in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye, takes objection to the word Bollywood and says she would like to be known as the Hindi film actress. “I don’t like the word Bollywood. I don’t want to be called a Bollywood actress. I would like to be called a Hindi film actress. I don’t mean to challenge Bollywood, I love it. But I don’t think we should derive a name just because there is Hollywood,” Richa said. She is aware that her views can stir up a debate. At the same time, she is proud of the fact that she is part of the film industry that is giving competition to Hollywood. “We are the only industry in the world that has guts to stand up in front of Hollywood. If you go to Europe, their cinema is suffering. In Japan and China, everywhere cinema has taken a huge hit because of Hollywood. And Hollywood is America’s largest export to the world.” “I feel very proud to be part of the industry which has the guts to make big budget, expensive films. We are in good place.,” she said. IANS

V actor Sachin Parikh, who is seen as a wife-beater, Jagan Mehta, in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, says he enjoys playing negative characters as they are more challenging, and has high aspirations of moving to Bollywood soon. “I always like to do negative roles. Television has very less leverage for an actor to perform at times. Most shows are based on family and have goody-goody roles. But when you get a role which is not done in normal life, it becomes a challenge for an actor and I enjoy that,” Sachin said. IANS

In the second half, all eyes will be on the Khans. Hayek bans daughter from ‘Savages’ set A

ctress Salma Hayek banned her young daughter from visiting her on the set of crime thriller Savages because she believes the movie is too violent for a child. Valentina, 4, is a regular on her mother’s film sets.

“She loves to come to the set. She doesn’t get bored, she wants to be there... (But) she’s not gonna watch this movie, no. Actually it was the only movie that she was not on the set,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted Hayek, 45, as saying.

New Poster for

he Expendables 2 has released a brand new poster, and with its bared muscles, roaring explosions and proliferation of heavy-duty weaponry, its more or less exactly what you’d expect from Sly and the gang. This new one-sheet manages the not inconsiderable feat of squeezing in the entire primary cast, with everyone from Liam Hemsworth’s pretty boy to Chuck Norris’ grizzled old campaigner present and correct. It’s worth mentioning that there’s no sign of supporting player Nan Yu, who had previously featured prominently in the publicity material. Perhaps Lionsgate’s marketing team felt that even one girl was one girl too many for this kind of testosterone fest. Plot-wise, the film will see Sly’s motley crew reunited by Bruce Willis’ Mr. Church, who’s keen to call in a favour that pits the Expendables against Eurobaddie Jean-Claude Van Damme. He in turn is up to no good with a staggering payload of plutonium that could reduce the Earth to a ball of flaming wreckage. However, we all know the plot will be largely irrelevant, as one-liners, explosions and Arnie are the real draw here. The Expendables 2 opens in the UK on 17 August 2012.

Charlie Sheen’s swan song

I

s Charlie Sheen preparing to leave television after his FX show Anger Management succeeds (or fails)? That’s what the former star of Two and a Half Men told the New York Times on Sunday. Sheen, whose comedy premieres on June 28, said he’s been acting for 30 years and “there’s a lot more out there to do than make-believe, you know?” “I mean, I’m grateful,” he told the newspaper. “I’ve got a dream life as a direct result of television, you know? But at some point you just get tired of wearing somebody else’s clothes, saying somebody else’s words and working in somebody else’s space. I’m also aware of the fact that you don’t get these kinds of shots in the same lifetime. You’re only supposed to have one hit show, unless you’re Kelsey Grammer. “When I’m done with this business it’s just going to be about soccer games and amusement parks,” he added, in reference to his children with ex-wives Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller. “And when this ends, I’m done. This is my swan song.” He also said he

wouldn’t agree to random drug tests should FX ever question his state of health. “I told them to go [away] with that one. It’s an invasion of privacy, man. Total invasion of privacy. If they say, ‘What’s going on?’ I’m like, I don’t know, what’s going on with you? ‘Well, you seem a little … ’ Really, that’s your opinion? How does the work look? ‘Well, the work’s great but … ’ Everything after ‘but’ is a dial tone. Go to hell.” Sheen also believes that fans will give him a break for returning to TV. “They seem to be rooting pretty hard for this next thing.” FX ordered 10 episodes of Anger Management, with an additional 90episode pickup contingent on it hitting a certain ratings benchmark.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

DID YOU KNOW...? n The influence of the British Empire on the development of Hockey is seen in the dominance of countries such as India, Australia and Pakistan at the Olympic Games. n The first men’s Olympic Hockey final was played on 31 October 1908 in London. England beat Ireland 8-1.

LEGENDS OF THE SPORT Rechelle Hawkes (born May 30, 1967) made her Olympic debut at Seoul 1988 and won the first of her three gold medals as Australia beat the Republic of Korea 2-0 in the final. Eight years later Hawkes captained her team to another gold medal in 1996. In 2000 she was then given the honour of reciting the Athletes' Oath on behalf of all the athletes at the Opening Ceremony.

Dhyan Chand (born August 29, 1905) was one of the greatest hockey players in the world. He came to prominence in 1926 before going on to score over 1,000 goals. Chand won three successive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936. It was in 1936 that Chand gave perhaps his greatest performance, scoring six and captaining the India team as they beat Germany 8-1.

Hockey demands speed, stamina and a mastery of intricate hand-eye coordination. Played by teams of 11 on an outdoor pitch, the sport is a long-time Olympic favourite, offering non-stop action over 14 days of competition.

THE LINGO Golden goal if extra time is required during the knockout stages of the competition, the team that scores the first goal – the golden goal – wins the match Green card an official warning that results in an automatic twominute suspension. The umpire may also issue yellow cards (longer temporary suspensions) and red cards (removal from the game). Olympic Games while the first women’s Olympic Hockey competition was held at the Moscow 1980 Games.

The basics Players use hook-shaped sticks to advance a hard ball towards their opponents’ goal. Matches are played over two halves of 35 minutes each. The team is made up of attackers, midfielders and defenders. Each team also has a goalkeeper. Substitutions can be made at virtually any time, and any number of times. To take a shot on goal, players must be inside their opponents’ shooting circle.

Competition format At the Games, both the men’s and women’s Hockey competitions begin with a preliminary phase: the 12 teams in each competition are divided into two pools of six, and each team plays every other in their pool. The top

two teams in each pool qualify for the semis, the winners of which go for the gold. The other teams in the groups play each other to determine final placings. In the preliminary phase, teams receive three points for a win and one for a draw. In the knockout matches, ties are resolved by extra time, with a golden goal determining the winner. If still tied after this time, the match is decided by a shoot-out competition. If the scores are still tied, the match is decided by sudden death shoot-out.

Officials Two umpires control the match. They each control half the pitch and work together on decisions in the middle.

Bharat Chettri Born in 1982, Bharat Chettri has been protecting the goal post for the country for over 10 years now. He made his international debut in 2001 when India played Egypt in the Prime Minister Gold Cup in Dhaka. The 30-year-old goal keeper was appointed as the captian for the Indian hockey team for the four-nation Super Series and an international tournament which was held in Australia in October, last year. His latest achievement has been with his appointment as the captain of the Indian squad for the London Olympics.

DAYS TO GO

BAN VIKTOR’S INVITATION KIEV: The daughter of the jailed Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko has urged David Cameron to withdraw President Viktor Yanukovych's invitation to next month's Olympics, reported The Guardian. The British government is boycotting the group stage of the Euro 2012 football championship in Ukraine in protest at the deteriorating human rights situation and the jailing of Tymoshenko, the country's former prime minister, last year. But in an interview with the Guardian before Tuesday's Ukraine v England game, Eugenia Tymoshenko said the boycott by the UK and other EU countries had been ineffective. Yanukovych had ignored it, she said, with prosecutors indicating on Monday that Tymoshenko would additionally be charged with murder. The deputy prosecutor Renat Kuzmin told the Kommersant newspaper he had enough evidence to charge her with the killing 16 years ago of the businessman and MP Yevhen Shcherban. He was gunned down at an airport with his wife and aide in a contractstyle killing. Tymoshenko denies the allegations. Her party says they are part of Yanukovych's campaign to eliminate his political opponents. "Ukraine is ruled by a dictator who sets his servants

loose against all those who have the courage to speak out against the country's sliding towards a criminal abyss," it said. Given the boycott's apparent failure, Eugenia said Downing Street should withdraw Yanukovych's invitation to the Olympics opening ceremony on 27 July. Ukraine's foreign ministry has confirmed he wants to

attend. She also urged the UK to introduce visa bans for high-ranking Ukrainian officials who had "illegally enriched" themselves and a freeze of their UK assets. Eugenia acknowledged Yanukovych was "getting the message" from EU leaders such as Germany's Angela Merkel, as well as from diplomats and EU parliamentarians, but added:

"He's closing his eyes and ears." She said his priority was to keep Tymoshenko in jail and to ensure his ruling Party of Regions won – or "falsified" – October's parliamentary elections. "The elections are essential for his continued political existence," she said. Tymoshenko is in a hospital in eastern Kharkiv, one of Ukraine's four Euro 2012 host cities. Eugenia said her mother was "feeling a little bit better" following a 21-day hunger strike in April, but still had acute back pain and was unable to walk unaided. She said conditions for her mother were humiliating, with guards watching her get changed and receive treatment, via video surveillance cameras. She added the two guards who allegedly beat her up in April – causing bruises on her arms and stomach – were still assigned to her, causing her immense psychological strain.

Tsonga on song after Games ticket PARIS: French number one JoWilfried Tsonga, who could be ruled out of Wimbledon with a badly twisted little finger, was on Monday selected for France's Olympic team. The French Tennis Federation (FFT) said that world number five Tsonga, Gilles Simon (13), Gael Monfils (15) and Richard Gasquet (19) were selected thanks to their status as France's top-ranked players as of June 11 this year. The 27-year-old Tsonga

suffered a miserable third round exit from Queen's Club last Thursday, and his agent Morgan Menahem said afterwards thoughts had immediately moved to treating his finger ahead of Wimbledon, where he was a semi-finalist last season. Tsonga missed out on the 2008 Games because of a knee injury while Gasquet skipped it to prepare better for the US Open that year. Monfils reached the quarter-finals in Beijing before losing to Serb Novak Djokovic, who went on to win bronze and is now world number one. AFP

Black-belt Putin might represent Russia at Games LOS CABOS: Judo black belt and Russian leader President Vladimir Putin hopes to go to the London Olympics to watch his favorite sport, a spokesman said on Monday. In a meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose capital will host the Olympics in July and August, Putin said that he had tentative plans to attend the judo matches at the games. "Putin wished Cameron luck in hosting the Olympic Games and said that he is thinking of going to London on one of the Olympic days to watch judo tournaments," said spokesman Dmitry Peskov. "He will make a firm decision on this later." An avid sportsman, 59-year-old Putin has practiced judo since his high school days, and has frequently been photographed and filmed sparring with top-class athletes. He has not been to Britain since a state visit in 2003, during his first turn as Russia's president, and relations between Russia and Britain have often been strained strained in recent years. AFP

Croatia risk UEFA wrath again over fans behaviour

Denmark's Nicklas Bendtner was on Monday banned for one match and fined $126,000 for flashing the sponsored waistband of his underpants while celebrating a goal during Euro 2012, UEFA said. European football's governing body said that its Control and Disciplinary Body had decided to impose the fine and suspend him for "one competitive fixture".

After a fine from UEFA for crowd trouble at their opening Euro 2012 match with Ireland, and amid a probe over racism during their game with Italy, Croatia could be back in the dock after fans hurled a flare in their final group fixture with Spain. Adding to the danger, the flare was thrown by fans in an upper stand onto fellow Croatia supporters down below.

Rooney itching to get going: Gerrard Shevchenko ‘50-50’ for England game DONETSK, UKRAINE: Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin revealed on Monday that talisman and captain Andrei Shevchenko has only a “50-50” chance of being fit for their crucial Euro 2012 match with England on Tuesday. Shevchenko injured his knee in Friday’s 2-0 loss to France and although he trained with the squad on Monday, Blokhin said he might not be able to take his place in the starting line-up for Ukraine’s final Group D game. “After the game against France, Shevchenko had an injury to his knee and we are doing everything possible to prepare him for the game,” Blokhin said during his pre-game press conference. DONETSK, UKRAINE: England captain Steven Gerrard on Monday, ahead of his side’s crucial Group D phase finale against Ukraine, warned that Wayne Rooney (in pic) was itching to make his Euro 2012 debut here. Rooney returns from a twomatch suspension at the Donbass Arena on Tuesday as England seek the draw they need which will guarantee a quarter-final berth as well as the elimination of the cohosts. “Everyone knows what Wayne Rooney’s all about, he certainly

England vs Ukraine 12.15am (Wednesday) Neo Prime makes us a lot more threatening going forward, Gerrard said. “He’s a world class player. I’m quite close to him and I can see it in his eyes that he’s itching to get out there and perform.” Gerrard discounted the suggestion that Rooney’s eagerness to impress could make him a liability if his fiery temperament got the better of him as it did when he was

We need him on the pitch. He’s aware of that. He regrets his reaction last year. I’m sure he’ll behave himself well and put up a good performance for the team.” Manager Roy Hodgson, has already vowed to start Rooney in place of either Andy Carroll or Danny Welbeck.

Croatia sad yet proud after defeat against Spain

GDANSK, POLAND: Defending champions Spain qualified for the Euro 2012 quarter-finals after replacement Jesus Navas hit the late winner in their nervy 1-0 victory over Croatia, who bowed out on Monday. Spain qualify as Group C winners and will now play their quarter-final in Donetsk, Ukraine, on Saturday against the Group D runner-up, while Italy finish second thanks to their 2-0 win over Ireland in Poznan. Having come on for Fernando Torres in the second-half, Navas hit the 88th-minute winner after Xavi Hernandez chipped the Croatian defence and Andres Iniesta provided the final pass. “It was a difficult game for us, we had a high percentage of ball possession and we proved we can control the game,” said Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque. “We were fighting for a victory, not a draw, and we have taken a step forward here by qualifying, this is motivation for the quarterfinals. The team played well, even though things didn’t go according to plan. We have no preference whether it is France, England or Ukraine, we have to be ready to take whatever comes.”

The World Cup winners top the group with seven points after their opening draw with Italy and 4-0 rout of Ireland, while there was heartbreak for Slaven Bilic’s Croatia. “I want to congratulate Spain, but most of all, also my players,” said the former West Ham and Everton defender.

“We had the best chances in the game and when you play against the world champions, you must take advantage of those opportunities.” Del Bosque named an unchanged team, while Bilic abandoned the 4-4-2 formation he used in the opening win over Ireland

and the draw with Italy for a 4-2-31 formation. As they had done in Thursday’s hammering of Ireland here, Spain started with almost 80 percent ball possession, which never dropped below 60, as Croatia seemed content to hit long balls down to lone striker Mario Mandzukic.

row on Monday after its national side failed to qualify into the Euro 2012 quarter-finals after 1-0 defeat by Spain, but praised the squad’s play against the defending champions. “Spectacular Farewell of Fiery Ones from Euro,” read a headline of the influential Jutarnji List daily online edition. Thousands of people, many of whom dressed in Croatia’s red and white chequered national colours, watched the match broadcast live on a giant screen in the capital Zagreb, with a lot of emotions. “I’m, sad but we were equal to a great Spain,” said 25-yearold Ratko Boric. Many other fans were sad, but proud. “They were fighting like lions and they made us proud. One should not forget who were our opponents,” estimated Branko Toncic. The 30-year-old teacher watched the match with friends in a cafe in downtown Zagreb which provided large screens for their guests to enjoy.

POZNAN, POLAND: Antonio Cassano (right) and Mario Balotelli (far right) scored the goals as Italy beat 10-man Ireland 2-0 at the Municipal Stadium here on Monday to reach the Euro 2012 quarter-finals. Spain’s 1-0 win over Croatia meant Italy finished second in Group C and will play the Group D winners in the last eight while Ireland finish bottom with three defeats. While Italy were worthy winners, Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni will have been bemused to see his side concede both goals from corners.

But Italy coach Cesare Prandelli will also have been concerned by his side’s dip in physical condition in the final 20 minutes, just as it did in their previous two games. Prandelli admitted they had been taken a little by surprise early on. “We had some difficulties in the first minutes, they decided to play the ball on the ground and we messed up in centre midfield,” he said. “Normally we’re more careful and wouldn’t let them get so far up the pitch but once we found our feet, especially in midfield, we did some good things.” Ireland, who showed much willing but little quality, finished

the game a man down after Keith Andrews was sent off late on by referee Cuneyt Cakir. Having had their gameplan thrown into disarray by conceding early goals in their previous two matches, Ireland at least seemed

fired up from the off. Several times Ireland broke at pace and had the Italian defence back-pedalling but they spurned their own chances through either a wayward pass, poor decision-making or running down a blind alley. Even so, Trapattoni said he was proud of his players. “We played much better this evening than we did against Spain and Croatia, we played with more personality and respected what we had said about credibility and commitment,” he said. “This evening we made some little mistakes from two corners and we’re not used to these little mistakes but I’m proud of our commitment,” he added. Rising star Maynard dead at 23 Julian Guyer

LONDON: Surrey’s Tom Maynard, one of England’s most promising batsmen, has died at the age of 23, the county said Monday. Maynard, the son of former Glamorgan and England batsman Matthew Maynard, was killed after being struck by a London Underground train in the early hours of Monday morning. British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed a 23-year-old man, named locally as Maynard, had died near Wimbledon Park station in south-west London. A BTP spokesman said, “BTP officers were called to the line near Wimbledon Park London Underground station on Monday, 18 June after a man was struck by a District line train. “London Ambulance Service medics attended but the man, believed to be 23 years old, was

pronounced dead at the scene. “The incident was reported to BTP at 5.03am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.” Mystery surrounded the end of Maynard’s life after London’s Metropolitan Police said he’d run away when stopped while driving “erratically” on Arthur Road, near Wimbledon Park station, before being hit by the tube train. “At approx 0415hrs on Monday, 18 June, officers stopped a vehicle after it was seen being driven erratically in Arthur Road, SW19,” Scotland Yard said. “The male driver of the vehicle — a black Mercedes C250 — made off on foot. Officers were unable to locate the man. “At approx 0510hrs the body of a man fitting the same description was found on tracks near Wimbledon Park station.” Tom Maynard began his career with Glamorgan before joining Surrey at the start of last

40-over tournament. A first-class record of 2,384 runs in 48 matches at 32.65 with four hundreds may seem modest but it was the way he compiled that tally which led him to be identified as an England prospect. Surrey chairman Richard Thompson said: “There is a profound sense of loss...To lose any-

Stewart laments Tom’s death LONDON: Alec Stewart said Tom Maynard may well have gone all the way to the top as English cricket struggled to come to terms with the death of one of its most promising talents at the age of just 23. Maynard, the son of former Glamorgan and England batsman Matthew Maynard, was killed after being hit by a London Underground train early on Monday morning, the day after playing for Surrey in a 40-over match against Kent. He’d only been at The Oval for 18 months after joining Surrey from Glamorgan but former England wicket-keeper batsman Stewart, now Surrey’s executive director, told the BBC that he’d become “a hugely popular figure” at the club.

FORMER ENGLAND CAPTAIN, ALEX STEWART WAS CONVINCED THAT TOM, A BATSMAN FOR THE ENGLAND LIONS, THE NATIONAL A TEAM, COULD HAVE GONE ON TO THE SENIOR SIDE. And Stewart was convinced Tom, a batsman for the England Lions, the national A team, could have gone on to the senior side, arguing decent career statistics of 2,384 runs in 48 first-class matches at 32.65 with four hundreds did not reflect the true depth of Maynard’s talent. “I remember meeting Tom a

Tyson to take tale to Broadway NEW YORK: From the boxing ring to Broadway — Mike Tyson said on Monday he’s teaming up with director Spike Lee to take his one-man show “Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth” to the New York stage. Tyson, the former heavyweight world champion and self-styled “baddest man on the planet,” debuted the show in Las Vegas in April, pulling few punches in recounting the highs and highly publicized lows of his career. Now he plans to bring the show to the Longacre Theatre for six nights only, July 31 to August 5,

body at such a young age is an utterly senseless tragedy.” England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Giles Clarke added: “Tom was a player of enormous potential who had already represented England Lions and had an exciting future ahead of him.” Maynard’s Surrey team-mate Kevin Pietersen was among England players who posted their condolences on Twitter. “So unbelievably sad!! The Maynard family is so special!! Thoughts are with this special family!! Loads of love guys!! KP xxx £RIPTom”. US senators call for national boxing commission WASHINGTON: The ripples from Timothy Bradley’s controversial split-decision victory over Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao spread on Monday as two US senators called for a national body to govern boxing. Senator John McCain, a Republican from Arizona who boxed when he attended the US Naval Academy, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat and former middleweight boxer, introduced legislation that would create the United States Boxing Commission. The body would be tasked with administering federal boxing law.

But fame and fortune were accompanied by turmoil, including a prison sentence for rape, drug addiction and bursts of temper outside the ring that made him tabloid fodder. Late in his career his fearsome ring reputation gained a bizarre tinge when he bit opponent Evander Holyfield’s ear in a fight. In recent years Tyson has faced charges of cocaine possession and drunken driving, and dealt with personal tragedy with the accidental death of his 4-year-old daughter, Exodus.

few years ago during a holiday in Dubai when he and his father Matt Maynard -- a good friend of mine from our England days -happened to be staying at the same hotel,” Stewart said. “Tom must have been about 17, but he was putting in the hard yards in the gym. Even back then, he knew where he wanted to go and that may well have been to the very top. “Tom was a very good trainer and a quick learner who did nothing by half-measures. It was all about getting the best out of what talent and ability he had been given. He was an attacking, aggressive batsman and excellent fielder who enjoyed taking responsibility and playing to the situation, whether it was one-day or four-day cricket.” AFP
