Phone helps nab murderers

When Mohd Ayaz and Mohd Muzaffar murdered Mohd Azhar and discarded his body, little did they realise that they would be caught thanks to Azhar’s mobile phone call history. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com

Ayaz invited Azhar for a party and after sedating him, murdered him and threw his body in Jalpally area.

A

murderer always commits a mistake, is the dictum Dr Watson maintained. In a murder mystery of a realtor in the City, it proved right once again. The Pahadishareef police found the cell phone of the deceased Mohd Azhar on his person. Azhar was evidently murdered in his own car and the body was thrown out onto the road in the Jalpally area. Searching for evidences, police recovered his mobile phone, and its call history gave away the culprits, said sub inspector S Venkatesam. Consequently, the police

tracked down Mohd Ayaz Ali and Mohd Muzaffar of Bandlaguda while the third accused Mohd Muzaffar has

escaped. The arrested confessed to murdering Azhar for revenge. It is said that Ayaz, 25, was working with Azhar and recently

Ayaz’s father fell seriously ill and his medical treatment required a big sum. Meanwhile, Azhar had recently received a few lakh rupees in a deal and Ayaz sought some money from him for his father’s treatment but was rebuffed. A few days later, Ayaz’s father died. Nursing a grudge against his

partner, Ayaz is alleged to have plotted to kill Azhar. He enlisted the help of Muzaffar and Junaid and had invited Azhar under the pretext of throwing a party on the night of September 5. Azhar fell into the trap and went to meet Ayaz and friends in his car. During the party, the accused are said to have mixed sedatives in the liquor and once Azhar fell unconscious, the trio drove the vehicle to a desolate place in Jalpally and murdered him. After the crime they threw the body out and drove away. The next day the police found the body and his mobile phone. Police said Ayaz had once been convicted for a theft a few years ago.

LAST YEAR... HERE Bike-pooling to beat stir

New grading system troubles for medical students

L

ast year, we had reported how the general public was looking at unique ways to beat the problems that arose due to the never-ending T-stir. Bike-pooling was one such ‘invention’. Despite this being against the law, the police kept quiet as the public was left with very little choice because public transport was off the roads for many days together.

Changes in the DNB CET scoring has created a furore among medical students. They claim that they were not informed about this earlier.

M

ost of us assume that for a graduate medical student, studies are not difficult. However, MBBS graduates who have given the entrance exam for post graduation are facing several problems with the exam. DNB CET is a national-level qualifying entrance exam for students who wish to pursue a post graduation in the medical field. This year, several changes have been made in the paper pattern and correction which is creating a turbulence among student community. This year, the exam has been made online and negative marking has been introduced. The evaluation pattern has also been changed into a scaling system. This change was announced just a few days before the results and many students were shocked with the result. Medical students have been complaining about the lack of transparency and accountability in this year's DNB CET exam . “The date of announcement about the change in the marking system was made on September 10 and the results were announced on September 14. No prior information regarding 'scaling' of marks in the exam was given to us. Moreover, they gave only formulated results. We were not provided with the raw score i.e. the number of right answers and wrong answers. Everything is so vague and unclear. I was expecting a score of 65 per cent (based on the mistakes I had made) but I got only 55. There is no explanation from the board regarding

Dr Vintaih R medical student

which of my answers are wrong,” fumes Dr Vinitah R*. A six page notification for the scaling system has been uploaded on the site but students complaint that it’s unclear and very vague. As per the new system additional marks were given to papers in which have been listed as difficult. “The scaling system just does not fit into this exam because it’s completely a memory-based entrance test. It’s nothing to do with logic. How can you compare one person's memory with another’s? Total

injustice has been done,” said Dr Raj M*. Students have tried contacting the board, but in vain. Upset and angry students have created an online group to discuss the problems and find ways to get justice. A poll result on the website revealed that 77 per cent of the students’ expectations did not match their results. Dr D Deepa Roy on www.rxpgonline website wrote, “Personally, I had assumed at least 120 correct answers among 180. Considering negative marking, I felt that I would at least get 50

per cent. Reality: I got 36/800. Status: Fail. So for me the results were quite shocking. I want to know my actual score and will write to the NBE for the same.” At the same time there is also a small section of the students who are happy with the scaling system as they scored more than what they had expected. Parents are also fuming over the results. “If they had informed us beforehand, we would have prepared and strategised accordingly. After writing the exam changing the pattern is wrong. Moreover, in other exams like US MLE medical exam which follows the scaling system, parents have other parameters also. In india it’s just scaling system which is unfair for the children,” said Nikita N, a parent. Students and parents are now planning to approach the court and also use RTI to get information and fight against this injustice. (* names changed on request)

HEALTH IS WEALTH

EMBRACING SURROGACY IN MODERN TIMES

Parenthood is a cherished moment in everyone's life and infertility is an acute problem faced by couples these days, growing multifold year each due to late marriages, stress factors, adulterated food and life style changes. In addition to this, certain physical reasons for infertility can be addressed by “Surrogacy, an arrangement where in another woman's (relative, friend or paid) womb is used for the birth of a child especially for women with abnormal uterus, women born without uterus by birth, those who have had repeated abortions or in case of recurrent failure of IVF cycles. This form of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technique) is a boon in disguise for such women. The eggs (self or donor) are fertilized by the sperms of a male in IVF/ ICSI Process and the resultant embryos are placed in the womb of

a screened, selected and prepared women who are physically and mentally fit and deliver a healthy baby for genetic parents. It is a legal process in our country where individuals and couples are encouraged to seek the services of any woman from the family or to engage a hired woman for this purpose. The law also permits single parents to have children without marriage where the newly born child is no different from that born out of a normal wedlock. Specialists @ Dr. Padmaja Infertility Centre, Habsiguda are poised to offer such advanced services for needy couples with result oriented, reliable and transparent services by helping parents realize their dreams of bearing a child through Surrogacy, an acceptable procedure. The infertility clinic has earned a high reputation for its success rates in surrogacy. The experts at this center boast of a rich experience of ten years in the infertility treatment industry.

Council plays a patriarchal role Elected members of the Assembly waste precious time at the House, warring and name-calling, but elders in the Council are now giving them a lesson in responsibility. Md INKESHAF AHMED inkeshaf.a@postnoon.com

I am not happy with the media’s attitude. The business of the council is not at all getting proper coverage in the media despite its peaceful functioning.

W

hile the ongoing monsoon session of Andhra Pradesh Assembly has been witnessing continuous adjournments without taking up any business, the upper house of the State — the AP Legislative Council is setting an example. The business of the Council has been successfully going on since it commenced on September 17. Barring a slight furore over the comments of TDP Legislative Party leader in the council Dadi Veerabadra Rao against CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy, the House debated on all the listed issues during the last two days.

SETTING AN EXAMPLE

The credit for this peaceful running of the Upper House undoubtedly goes to the members of the council, who not only turn up in full strength to attend the session but also contribute to

Anam Ramanaryana Reddy minister for finance debate on various problems. In the process, these MLCs are setting up an example for their counterparts in the Legislative Assembly. “We have been successfully running the House for the last two days. The entire credit for this goes to all MLCs irrespective of their political affiliations. The members are committed to run the House without creating any trouble,” government chief whip

ASSEMBLY

Day 3 of Assembly proves to be futile

in Legislative Council Y. Sivarami Reddy told Postnoon on Wednesday. He said that the council will take up short discussions on power crisis, land allotment to various industries by the state government, status of minor irrigation in the state in remaining three days. Apart from this, the council is scheduled to debate on two crucial bills.

MINISTERS MAKE A BEELINE

Meanwhile, the peaceful running of the Upper House also attracted the State cabinet ministers. Ministers are showing interests in attending the House session rather than wasting their time and energy in the Assembly. “It’s a matter of joy for me to attend the Council session. We not only get to hear the views and suggestions and complaints of public representatives but also

get an opportunity to present the State government’s stand and solution for those issues,” minister for finance Anam Ramanaryana Reddy said. He complimented the MLCs for their extension of support to run the Upper House. Minister for minority welfare Syed Mohammad Ahmadullah also expressed similar views. Apart from these two ministers, many other cabinet ministers have made a beeline to the Council to attend its session.

LACK OF MEDIA COVERAGE

According to Reddy, though the Council is setting up an example by peacefully undertaking its business, the media have not been showing any interest. “I am not happy with the media’s attitude. The council is not getting proper coverage in the media despite its peaceful functioning. The media is focusing on fights and slogan shouting of MLAs instead of highlighting the debates of the upper house, “Reddy rued.

It was clear that members of the Assembly did not want discussion on anything to take place. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

I

t's a déjà vu situation in the Assembly. On day three, the State Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes and was adjourned three times so as to maintain order. At 9am, when the House was called in to order, members of TDP, YSRC, TRS and BJP were up on their feet, each demanding adjournment motions on different issues. The TDP, YSRC and Left parties wanted the speaker to take up discussions on their demand for a rollback of price hike in gas cylinder and diesel while the TRS kept up its pet theme of Telangana. The only, new development was the partner in power, MIM joining the chorus asking for it’s perennial theme of

minority welfare. The MIM did not join others in their demands but carried on their own demands exercising their vocal chords to the maxim. As the Chair rejected all pleas for adjournment motions, the agitated members rushed to the podium shouting slogans denouncing the government. speaker N Manohar announced adjournment till 10 a.m. When the House was reconvened at 10am, the scene was same. He ordered another adjournment till 11am. As the scene remained stormy even at 11am, the house was adjourned till 12 noon. The strength of the Assembly was low today as many legislators left for their constituency to attend Ganesh pandal inauguration. Most MLAs appeared to be whiling away time waiting for adjournment.

n a bid to beef up security along the 974-km long coastline of Andhra Pradesh, the State government has decided to set up 15 marine police stations, in addition to the existing six ones and also appoint special police officers in coastal villages, a police official said. “In order to strengthen the infrastructure for the coastline patrolling and surveillance, six marine police stations had been established in 2006 in the first phase,” deputy superintendent of police (DSP) of Marine police CM Naidu told PTI here. “Now, the government is in the process of setting up 15 more marine police stations in the second phase, for which land had already been identified and acquired,” he added. Once these police stations start functioning, we can have a fullfledged coastal security, Naidu said. Six marine police stations, each headed by an inspector, have been functioning at Kalingapatnam in Srikakulam district, Rushikonda in Visakhapatnam, Vakalapudi in East Godavari, Gilakaladindi in Krishna district, Suryalanka in Guntur and Dugurajapatnam in Nellore district. “Though there is a shortage of marine staff, we are ready to tackle any situation on our coastline. Marine police are keeping a constant and strict vigil on the 974-km long coastline spread across nine districts of the State,” the officer said. To further strengthen the security, there is a proposal to appoint special police officers (SPOs) in coastal villages. “There were 508 hamlets, known as ‘Fishermen’s Villages’ along the State coastline and the proposal to appoint SPOs in each village has been pending with the Finance Department for approval,” he said. “Appointment of SPOs might begin in a month or two. They will act as our eyes and ears and inform us if they find any suspicious movements,” he said. PTI

Countdown to Co P

Taxing times for Taxonomy Paucity of taxonomy experts and students in City poses problems for discussions at CoP 11. RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com

A

mong the agendas slated for the CoP11, the Global Taxonomy Initiative enjoys great prominence. But the current state of taxonomy studies in the State is not a happy one. And the shortage of expert taxonomists in the City proves a handicap in the crucial debate on a workable strategy to save world’s biological diversity. It’s not just experts; shortage of students in taxonomy is also a lasting concern. The blame should go to academics, not students, though. The government is in no small measure responsible for this state of affairs, pundits in the field point out. Professor Ch Manoharachary, an award winning taxonomist from Osmania University says, “The importance given to taxonomic studies has gone down because of preference given to the more commercial sciences like biotechnology, DBT, DST courses. MSc, PhD students opt out of taxonomy because they

think it is a laborious work as it demands a lot of field work like collecting thousands of samples and classifying their data.” The fact that this field’s patrons have drifted into other sciences because of lack of funding comes as no surprise. “The necessary academic infrastructure too is unavailable in many cities. Monographs, manuals required for this area of study are not available anymore. The

importance of gene banks, studying bacteria culture and studying morphology does not attract the youth because it is not a fetching profession,” he rues. Currently only three universities offer a professional coaching of taxonomy specialisation in Hyderabad — ANGRAU, Osmania University and the University of Hyderabad. Here too, the specialisation in taxonomy and research papers related

to this field have gone down, say departmental heads. Taxonomy has been pegged under the Botany and Plant Sciences areas, where students prefer laboratory work over fieldwork. “They think that taxonomy is a taxing subject. And this trend has had serious impact on several fields. The CBD authority head office in Chennai is devoid of any knowledgeable official who has an in depth knowledge about taxonomy. Students are often granted projects after the commercial value of their research is evaluated. Which means, studying the genes of Taxol or aromatic plants is only possible if a student can guarantee a profitable outcome from his/her research,” Manoharachary says. In the financial year of 19992000, the Ministry of Environment and Taxonomy had launched the All India Coordinated Project on Taxonomy to encourage this field of study. Osmania University was listed as the coordinating unit for fungi related taxonomical studies. But despite this, the preferences of students

Experts say... “Billions of rupees worth taxonomic data about artificial culture, gene banks etc., with the constant loss of forest cover. With new species being introduced into alien biodiversity systems, the importance of studying and classifying their data has gone un-collated. This can have a debilitating effect on the biodiversity of our country. Which is why following the Nagoya Protocol, we are going to attach importance to this agenda item in the CoP11,” says R Hampaiah.

has moved towards the more popular fields of biotechnology. This ignorance coupled with the fact that the area of study is a vast universe within itself has led to its decline, experts feel. Several path breaking discoveries originated from the study of taxonomy. For example, Streptomycin is a drug derived from the actinobacteria Streptomyces Griceus has fought tuberculosis over the centuries. This drug was discovered because of extensive taxonomic research. Shock: “I cab services oblivious of CBD!

Ignorance is indeed bliss. Neither the government nor any other organisation has made an effort to make the City’s cab services aware of the Meet and the need to refurbish their image. Visitors to the City will be left at the mercy of fleecing autos and decrepit cabs.

s it the same meeting where doctors are coming?” asks manager of one of the top cab services in the City. The remark is self-explanatory and we leave it to the readers to decide. There are about 70,000 cars registered as taxis throughout of State. Of which 40 per cent are plying on the City roads. But the leading cab services in the City, with thousands of vehicles engaged for providing services by and large remain unaware of the CBD. There is neither any effort to cash in on the huge flow of people from inland and abroad. After the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport came into existence in Shamshabad, the cab industry has seen a new dawn. Shuttling between Airport and the City has increased the scope of industry and has generated a big boom compared with other neighbouring cities. But the government failed to provide any specific instructions to the management of the cabs on the most prestigious gala event happening in the City. For instance, the Dot cab with its large fleet of vehicles plying

on the City roads has not received any formal information from the authorities organising the event. “We do not have any information on what this conference is all about,” said Ajay Kumar, operations manager, Dot Cabs. B Supraj of Green Cab, even though aware of the CBD conference, complaints that neither the government nor the GHMC has taken into consideration the cab services in the City. “It appears the government has engaged some other parties for providing special services,” he points out. When this is the situation

with well-organised Cab serviceproviders, one can imagine the state of affairs of individual taxi drivers. Many cannot explain what this conference means: “They are coming to find out the feasibility of investing in the City”, feels P Mahender, who runs a taxi from Dilsukhnagar to the airport. Many traffic inspectors who deal with the traffic situation are not aware of the approximate number of cars in the City with taxi plates. “You need to refer to some RTI activist. It is hard to say how many cabs are there in the city,” said a police inspector.

Making Hyderabad a smart city

“The 21st century will be a century of cities” — Former Denver mayor, W Webb

Hyderabad, a leading byte-basket, can do a lot to tackle its current troubles in pollution and transport and look smart. Here is how. PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com

M

ore than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and countries such as India and China are in need of hundreds of additional cities to accommodate growing populations. People in many cities suffer from inadequate transportation, sub-standard buildings, lack of sanitation, and poor public safety, highlighting the need for sustainable and livable urban planning. But many countries are finding Information and communication technology (ICT) a useful tool in helping cities improve their safety, cleanliness, and sustainability. Diana Lind, contributing author to the State of the World 2012 report, takes snapshot of various cities that have successfully used ICT. Indian cities, especially Bangalore and Hyderabad, have the scope of harnessing this technology to mitigate its sufferings. In many cases, cities are partnering directly with businesses to boost urban sustainability. The Dutch city of Rotterdam, for example, is working with General Electric (GE) in an effort to reach the city’s goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent compared with 1990 levels. GE will use data visualizations, smart meters, and other technologies to optimize energy efficiency and improve water management. The use of these ICTs will greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Rotterdam, which emits as much carbon dioxide as New York City, while being only a tenth of its size.

10 smart cities that make max use of ICT 1. Vienna 2. Toronto 3. Paris 4. New York 5. London 6. Tokyo 7. Berlin 8. Copenhagen 9. Barcelona 10. Hong Kong Source: Ranking by Boyd Cohen, climate strategist

Smart cities are those that use ICT to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint — all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.

CITIES MUST CUSTOMIZE ICT

“ICT can be an excellent tool, but it is not the silver bullet solution to greening cities,” said Lind, executive director and editor in chief of Next American City, a nonprofit that promotes socially and environmentally sustainable economic growth in cities in the United States. “To be effective, ICT must be used not only in

mapping problems encountered across cities, but also to find sustainable solutions to those problems.” Each city must customise the ICT to suit its needs. State of the World highlights three ways that communities can effectively use ICT to promote sustainability: n Open access to data. Improving data access is critical to creating sustainable cities. By sharing information, it is possible to make connections among seemingly disparate variables. The Spatial Information Design Lab at Columbia University in New York used data to establish the connection between crime and poor housing, education, and health care. By analysing data from the criminal justice system, researchers found that a disproportionate number of felons were from specific neighborhoods in large US cities. Similar research may help officials target policies around education and poverty reduction in these areas, which could help in preventing crime. n Community mapping. Mapping all neighbourhoods and regions of a city is vital to ensuring effective and sustain-

Pick

able urban planning. Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, is home to approximately 1 million people. Yet Kibera has been excluded from city maps, discounting its thousands of residents. Recently, an independent team of researchers partnered with Kibera youth to create an interactive map of the slums. In 2009, the team succeeded in placing Kibera on official Nairobi maps, which resulted in a new project, Voice of Kibera, which helps citizens report the location of robberies or fires, and hold discussions by text message. n Community watch. ICTs can enhance community involvement and help authorities respond to local concerns. The Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science, a grassroots-mapping community based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, uses low-tech materials, including helium balloons and digital cameras, to take aerial photos of areas that may endanger public health or be of environmental concern. These tools helped identify contaminated areas in the Gulf of Mexico after a major oil spill and an illegal dumping site in Brooklyn, New York. Using ICT helps cities achieve sustainability efficiently while connecting with local communities, to ensure that diverse perspectives are included in the city’s plans. Experts point out that Hyderabad could come up with a major initiative in the field of civic issues. A government-ICT coordination could do wonders, they say.

Mixed response to bandh

The bandh evoked little response in Mumbai owing to Ganesh festivities. NEW DELHI: The bandh called by NDA, Left parties and SP to protest against diesel price hike, FDI in multi-brand retail and cap on subsidised LPG today evoked mixed response as protestors disrupted road and rail traffic in parts of UP, Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha but it had little impact in Mumbai. In Delhi, most of the markets remained closed and vehicular movement was normal though protesters blocked traffic at some places. Auto rickshaws plied in the city and buses of state-run Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) were on the roads in large numbers. Samajwadi Party and BJP workers staged demonstrations and stopped trains at a number of places in Uttar Pradesh. Protestors stopped trains in Mathura, Agra, Varanasi, Allahabad and Lucknow while BJP

workers and traders blocked the Agra-Gwalior Highway by burning tyres. The bandh evoked little response in Mumbai owing to Ganesh festivities across Maharashtra. Shiv Sena and MNS have kept away from the day-long bandh due to the festival. Life in the Kolkata and elsewhere in West Bengal was disrupted by the bandh. Though airport services were normal, train services in Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway were disrupted, officials said. In Tamil Nadu, no untoward incident was reported so far from across the state and the protest was so far peaceful, police said. Governmentrun buses were on the road. Schools and educational institutions remained open and it was business as usual with government departments. PTI

Tamil Nadu, Karnataka unhappy

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s bid to resolve the row over Cauvery river water-sharing, by asking Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs every day between September 20 and October 15 to Tamil Nadu, failed with both states “unhappy” over the decision. Karnataka CM Jagadish Shettar expressed the inability to release the Cauvery water due to drought and walked out of the meeting after registering a protest over the ruling, while Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa said her state would approach the Supreme Court. The two CMs attended the seventh meeting along with Puducherry CM N Rangasamy and Kerala water resources minister PJ Joseph, who was standing in for an indisposed CM.

Mamata made them heroes

A chemistry professor, a scientist, a college student and a poor marginal farmer faced the whimsical CM’s wrath and persecution from the administration. And in no time they found celebrity status.

O

ne can call it Mamata Banerjee’s Midas touch. The maverick West Bengal CM’s intolerance is making heroes out of faceless people in the crowd. After a chemistry professor, a scientist and a college student, it was the turn of a poor marginal farmer, Shiladitya Choudhury, to face the CM’s wrath, leading to his arrest and subsequent celebrity status as sympathy poured in from all quarters for the “injustice” done to him. Choudhury, who hails from a small village in West Midnapore district, had to spend 14 days in jail just because he dared to ask Banerjee in a public rally: “Farmers are dying because they have no money to buy fertiliser. Empty promises are not enough. What are you doing for farmers?” A visibly infuriated Banerjee immediately branded him a Maoist, following which Choudhury was detained, released and then arrested. “I had gone there to inform didi (elder sister, as Banerjee is called) about the problems farmers were facing. But I was branded a Maoist. Everybody in Bengal now knows my case and people will at least recall my ordeal before raising their problems,” Choudhury told IANS. Earlier this year, it was a little known chemistry teacher of Jadavpur University, Ambikesh Mahapatra, who got instant star-

who was forced by Banerjee to give up the railways portfolio. Mahapatra’s ordeal not only evoked widespread derision among the masses but overnight turned him into a celebrity - who by then had become a victim symbolising state terror. Mahapatra was practically an unheard of man - even the university vice chancellor told journalists that he had not known anybody by that name taught in the university before the controversy broke out. And now, he is a household name in Bengal and a popular face in several television debates.

Their photographs are now a rage on social networking sites with their experience being cited as examples of state oppression.

dom after being roughed up by Trinamool workers and arrested by the police. His crime? Mahapatra was pulled up for online circulation of ‘defamato-

ry’ cartoons — which included photographs of Banerjee and Railway Minister Mukul Roy showing the duo discussing how to get rid of Dinesh Trivedi —

“Earlier either Mahapatra saab or his wife used to come to our shop for groceries. But we didn’t know that he was professor but after the incident everybody knows him and his profession,” said Raju, a shopkeeper. The bright, bespectacled and articulate Tanya Bhardwaj, a product of Bengal’s hallowed Presidency College, landed in trouble after she dared to ask Banerjee during a television programme about Mahapatra’s arrest. An infuriated Banerjee branded her a Maoist and

walked out of the programme. The incident was widely criticised and Bhardwaj’s interviews and open letter to Banerjee were widely published in the media. Later, the state security agencies harassing her also made headlines. “What for have we elected a government? In a democracy, we have every right to ask questions to elected representatives. And if a head of state behaves in such a way, it’s a shame. If I get a chance I will again ask the same question to Mamata Banerjee,” Bhardwaj said. Banerjee’s intolerance came to the fore again when a molecular biologist, Partho Sarathi Roy, was arrested for his involvement in a human rights movement. Shocked, eminent scientists and intellectuals, including Noam Chomsky, wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging Roy’s release. “Everything has a positive and negative side. When I go to villages, people recognise me instantly and say they have derived the strength to fight state oppression after seeing the injustice handed out to me,” said Roy, who is now a popular face in panel discussions on news channels. The photographs of Mahapatra, Roy, Bhardwaj and Choudhury are now a rage on social networking sites with their harrowing experiences being cited as glaring examples of state oppression and intolerance. Special mums care for special children

A shelter home provides for all needs of 25 HIV-positive children and gives them hope and reason to fight on.

T

wo years ago 40-year old Anuradha, who is HIV positive, came to Jaipur with a frail body and weak mind clouded with uncertainty about her future. Today she is a “mother” to similarly-affected 25 children at Rays —Asha Ki Ek Kiran, a unique home where the caregivers themselves are patients. Anuradha is not the only one providing motherly care to the children who don’t have parents. Rays has hired four other women — all HIV positive — who take care of the children by giving moral and psychological support.

“Life had come to a standstill. I had no idea what to do after losing my husband to the disease; I left my home of a joint family with two kids and I started working for a hospital as a caretaker for AIDS patients as the qualified nurses were reluctant to come into direct contact with them,” Anuradha told IANS. “Life was tough but at least I could earn a living,” she added. That was when she was spotted by retired army captain Gurinder Virk, then a Gurgaonbased business executive, who persuaded her to be a part of a shelter house that he wanted to begin. “We had been to a state gov-

ernment orphanage once and saw that the people there were reluctant to admit a kid who was

HIV positive. That very day I and my friend decided that we will open one such place where we will have only HIV-positive children,” Virk, 57, said. Virk started the shelter home with two children in 2010. Today it has 25. “Most kids we have are from neighbouring places, especially from nearby villages,” Virk said. Besides providing for their lodging and food, Rays supplies medicines and also takes care of their education and extra-curricular activities. Running the home costs Virk `150,000 a month, which is contributed by a dedicated band of 50 friends. One such friend, Rashmi

Kuchhal, who owns a restaurant in Jaipur and is an entrepreneur, looks after administrative issues and visits the home for a few hours every evening. Virk, who used to visit every weekend, has given up his job effective October 1 to devote his full time to the home. The children go to Rawat Public School, which fully supports Virk. Speaking about children, she says with motherly anger: “Badmashi bhi to kam nahi karte hain na sabko jabardasti khilana padta hai (They are as naughty as other children; nor have we to force feed all of them).” IANS

French fear backlash French ministers fear the focus could shift to Paris PARIS: Tens of thousands of French expatriates in Muslim countries face a nervous weekend amid fears they could be swept up in a rising tide of anger over controversial depictions of Mohammed. Protests that have left over 30 people dead in the last week have, until now, largely been targeted at the United States, which has had to carry the can for the California-produced Innocence of Muslims film. But French ministers fear the focus could shift to Paris’s overseas outposts following a satirical weekly’s publication

of cartoons featuring obscene images of the founder of Islam. Embassies, consulates, cultural centres and international French schools in around 20 Muslim countries will be closed on foreign ministry orders Friday for fear of retaliatory violence following weekly prayers. In Tunisia, French schools were shut down from Wednesday until next Monday after the ruling Islamists branded the cartoons a “new attack” on their religion. The shutdown also came into force early in Egypt. The

moves reflect concern about the volatility of countries still reeling from the aftermath of last year’s Arab Spring which has been exacerbated by last week’s attack on a US consulate in Libya that left the ambassador, Chris Stevens, and three other officials dead. At home meanwhile, France’s Socialist government faced a dilemma over how to manage the anger of the country’s own four million Muslims in the wake of weekly Charlie Hebdo’s publication of the cartoons. reader asked me yesterday why so many of Postnoon’s columnists (myself included) were so angry all the time. I presumed he meant in print, because I hope we don’t walk around sneering at passersby and flipping the bird at errant citizens. Thankfully he did. But what’s wrong with being angry at real and perceived injustices that take place all around us. I would rather be enraged than cynical; angry rather than delusionally optimistic. I am my own worst critic and I enjoy it…it keeps me on my toes and prevents the bugbear of complacency from setting up sticks in my thought processes. I believe that we in the media and the citizen at large have been wearing rose-tinted glasses for far too long. We have allowed politicians and authorities to get away with far too much with too little repercussion. Quite often it’s a case of misplaced jingoistic servility that stops many from going hammer and tongs at those complacent leviathans basking in someone else’s sun. It has been a concerted effort that has made me question everything: every motive and every sliver of praise. Such scepticism may sound sad indeed, but it does help you keep your eye on the ball. Be enraged, it helps. Rage against stupidity. Rage against laziness and its enablers. Above all rage against the machine that winds up our lives to the extent we become clockwork junkies looking for our next fix of primetime delusion. The writer is the editor, Postnoon

As part of the routine at the hospital, after we are done attending to the patients in the ward we go to the Emergency Room to admit any patients that require in house services. Upon entering the ER department we would ask one of the doctors or nurses if there were any patients for our department. At the time this idea was created, some of us had just been reassigned to different departments, myself just left Gynecology for Internal Medicine. Upon entering ER I asked if there were any patients for me. Unsure what department I was in, the ER doc asked me what department I’m in, and

like a flash of genius I answered, “Psychiatric Gynecology”. For those of you who aren’t aware, there is no such department as Psychiatric Gynecologist, there is Psychiatry and there is Gynecology but not together. If such a department existed it would specialize in “treating mentally disturbed female reproductive systems and women”, translation, “dealing with a crazy vagina!” (I wish I could see most of your reaction when you read that part). As time went by I kept expanding on the Psychiatric Gynecologist role, creating syndromes and disease that a Psychiatric Gynecologist would deal with. Every time I could introduce myself as that I would, and each time I would push the envelope a little further, and once the envelope pushed back: there was a psychiatric patient who kept disrobing herself and had to be restrained. Taking this little topic one step further I decided to use Facebook as a litmus test of my ideas what a Psychiatric Gynecologist would talk about if he/she were to be giving a lecture. The following was posted: Psychiatric Gynecologist: Next week’s talk will be on "The correlation between estrogen levels and acting 'bat-shit-crazy”. That was followed up with Psychiatric Gynecology: Next week’s lecture will be on "Cultural slang used to refer to the female genitalia and its effect on the size of underwear". Reactions to both were positive (and by positive I mean the

guys thought it was hilarious and girls were just in shock and awe at the truth of it all). So here I am expanding on what it would mean to be a Psychiatric Gynecologist. The more I think about it the more I realize that almost any guy who has had to put up with a girl in his life can be considered a trainee in Psychiatric Gynecology. As for the girls, if you have had to put up with us guys you would be considered patient and understanding, and I emphasise, very understanding. What would some of the diagnoses be if the field actually existed? What would the disorders be like if they crossed fields? Affective/Mood Disorder: Experiencing sustained sadness and emotional outburst; it’s been sad for a very long time.

Bipolar Disorder: Varying degrees of being manic alternating with state of depression; it just can’t make up its mind if it’s happy or sad to see you. Delusional Disorder: Characterised by holding one or more non-bizarre delusions; it believes that’s all guys care about. Paranoid Schizophrenic Disorder: Breakdown of the process of thinking and of emotional responsiveness with auditory and/or visual hallucinations; it believes other surrounding organs are conspiring with each other to plot against it, and believes they are listening on its conversations. Eating disorders: Involve disproportionate concern in matters of food and weight; do I even need to explain women and their issues with weight?

ill Gates has topped the Forbes Rich list — for the 19th year in a row. It has been a year of profits for the rich and the super rich. The net worth of the richest in the most important country in the world has only risen despite recession — 1.7 trillion. Mitt Romney may have timed his comment wrong, but what he inadvertently reveals is the disparity between the rich and the poor. If the cream of the rich that includes Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Larry Ellison and the Koch brothers are from the same country where 47 per cent don’t pay taxes where a majority of them just cannot afford to, the disparity between the rich and the poor can’t be measured in miles, but in light-years. We need not search much for reasons behind the many problems that plague us for this is one of the most important ones itself. It is this disparity, this imbalance that evokes hatred and criminal thoughts in those who are not among the blessed ones. For when they look up from their shanties at the cloud-kissing sky-scrapers, they see where they are and where their betters, who they imagine might be looking down upon them from above. And every year come out lists like Forbes’s, a constant reminder of this inequality. Something must be done to bridge this gap, soon, or some day the hatred may grow to be too big to be contained, too big to be appeased by eyewashes, sops and promises of politicians.

ecurring childhood respiratory problems had become a routine for Reena’s four-year-old. The problems started to increase and her daughter started to become weak. Tests finally revealed that she was suffering from a hereditary disorder known as cystic fibrosis. According to Dr Pradyut Waghray, MD , Kunal Institute of Medical Sciences, “Cystic fibrosis is a condition in which the secretions in the body get thick. This mainly affects the pancreas and the lungs. The thick secretion in the lungs may make it difficult for the patient to breathe.” Cystic Fibrosis occurs due to the mutation of the long arm of the chromosome 7. The mutation occurs when three of the 6,100 codes of the gene are missing. This gene contains proteins that create the cystic fibrosis transmission regulators (CFTR). If they are functioning normally, the CFTR helps control the passage of the chloride ions. In case of mutation, the ions cannot pass easily. In some cases, the CFTR may be completely absent. Dr Pradyut explains, “This causes a defect in the chloride channel hence there is an increased absorption of salt and water across the cell membrane.” An increased number of chloride ions should be present outside the cell membrane as they help attracting the water out of the cell membrane into

the mucous area. In case of CF, the water gets reabsorbed into the cell thus making the mucous area thick. The thick mucous makes the lungs more prone to bacterial infections. Dr Pradyut says, “Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder. This means that if both parents have CF than the child is at risk of CF while if only one parent has CF then the child is at less risk.” This implies that if the mother has one regu-

lar gene and one mutated gene while the father also has one mutated and one regular gene than the child is at risk of CF. On the other hand, if only either of the parents has a single mutated gene than the chances of the child getting CF is less. He adds, “The carrier rate of cystic fibrosis is said to be one in 25. Cases of CF are more common in children born out of consanguineous marriages.” Cystic fibrosis manifests

Hepatitis D also referred to as HDV is a disease caused by a small circular enveloped RNA virus. Transmission of HDV can occur either via simultaneous infection with HBV or superimposed on chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis B carrier state. These can result in more severe complications.

mainly in childhood. Dr Waghrey says, “This can be seen in the form of repeated respiratory tract infections. Bacteria such as the pseudomonas have been seen to cause infections in CF patients.” Testing to know if the child may be suffering from CF can be done in the foetal stage itself. If it is found that the child may be suffering from CF, the parents may be advised to abort the child as there is not treatment

for that.” According to Dr Pradyut, cases of Cystic fibrosis are rarely seen, but, if we look at data over the last 10 years we can see that there are an increasing number of cases. Cystic fibrosis can be diagnosed with the help of a sweat chloride test as patients suffering from SF will have an increased sodium content in their sweat. This test is available in many hospitals nowadays. CT scans can also be used to diagnose CF.

chloride channel called TMEM16A. This channel secretes chloride ions, besides regulating biological processes such as neuron firing, gastrointestinal activity and the secretion of sweat and tears. The authors identified three chemicals that inhibit the channel. “We tested the ability of these chemicals to inhibit TMEM16A and other channels, and we found that they specifically block TMEM16A,” Rock said. “It is great that we came across these molecules that were unknown previously since we can now try to get into clinical trials to benefit patients,” said Rock.

SYDNEY: Extremes of temperatures during heat waves or cold spells could trigger premature deaths from heart attacks, says a new study by Australian researchers. The findings are important because of how the body responds to temperate extremes, the growing obesity trend and the Earth’s climate changes, said Cunrui Huang, who led the study as doctoral scholar at the School of Public Health, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane. Exposure to extreme temperatures can trigger changes in blood pressure, blood thickness, cholesterol and heart rate, according to previous research, the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes reports. The study is the first in which researchers examined the link between daily average temperature and “years of life lost” due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Years of life lost measures premature death by estimating years of life lost according to average life expectancy, according to a QUT statement. “With increasing rates of obesity and related conditions, more people will be vulnerable to extreme temperatures and that could increase the future disease burden of extreme temperatures,” Huang said. Researchers collected data on daily temperatures in Brisbane, Australia, between 1996 and 2004 and compared them to documented cardiovascular-related deaths for the same period. Per one million people, 72 years of life were lost per day due to CVD, researchers said. Risk of premature CVD death rose more when extreme heat was sustained for two or more days, researchers found. “This might be because people become exhausted due to the sustained strain on their cardiovascular systems without relief, or health systems become overstretched and ambulances take longer to reach emergency cases,” said Adrian G. Barnett, study co-author and associate professor of biostatistics.

Significant triggers of asthma identified WASHINGTON: Scientists may have hit upon an effective way to block asthma attacks by identifying the two most significant biological triggers that bring them on. Researchers from the Universities of California-San Francisco (UCSF), Johns Hopkins and Duke universities demonstrate that these two triggers for asthma are tied to a specific calcium-activated chloride channel, called TMEM16A. They regulate airway secretions and smooth muscle contraction, the two major factors linked with asthma attacks, according to the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Maybe if we could inhibit

both of these processes by blocking this one channel, we could affect the two symptoms of asthma,” said senior study author Jason Rock, assistant professor of anatomy at UCSF. Asthma, a respiratory disorder that causes shortness of breath, coughing and chest discomfort, results from changes in the airways that lead to the lungs. It affects 18.7 million adults and 7.0 million children in the US alone, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Normally, humans have few mucus-producing cells. Those suffering from asthma, however, have an elevated number of these cells lining the tubes that

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

PGA TOUR

CYCLING EVENT

Tiger, Rory square off It will be the fifth time in the last four tournaments that Woods and McIlroy have played in the same group and the eighth time this year. ATLANTA, GEORGIA: World No 1 Rory McIlroy will once again be paired with 14-time major winner Tiger Woods (right) as he shoots for his fourth victory in his last five events at this week’s Tour Championship. Woods and McIlroy tee off as the final pairing of the 30-man PGA Tour field on Thursday. McIlroy says he’s pleased with what he has accomplished on the PGA Tour this year but doesn’t think Woods is intimidated in any way by him. “No, how can I intimidate Tiger Woods?” he said. “The guy’s got 75 or 70 whatever PGA Tour wins, 14 majors. “He’s been the biggest thing ever in our sport. I mean, how can some little 23-year-old from Northern Ireland with a few wins come up and intimidate him? It’s just not possible. “I don’t know where he got that from, but it’s not true.” McIlroy was referring to a recent comment from former Australian golfer Greg Norman who said he believes Woods

sees the two-time major winner McIlroy as a threat. “What I’m seeing is that Tiger’s really intimidated by Rory,” Norman said. “When have you ever seen him intimidated by another player? Never.” Woods has seen numerous rivals come and go during his 17 years on the PGA Tour. McIlroy heads into the Tour Championship as world number one and first on the the PGA Tour’s money list.

McIlroy began his recent run of fine form with a record eightshot victory at Kiawah Island in the PGA Championship for his second major. He won back-to-back FedEx Cup playoff events in Boston and Indianapolis to stretch his lead in the world rankings and become the front runner to collect the $10 million bonus that will be handed out after the final round at East Lake. As far as not being intimidated goes, McIlroy can say the same for Woods. “I don’t think intimidated is the right word,” McIlroy said of Woods’ towering presence. “I am more just in awe of what he’s done, of his accomplishments, of his achievements. But never intimidated.” There are a number of players who could win the $10 million bonus, heading into the Tour Championship which will determine the FedEx Cup playoff champion. The points are reset to give each of the 30 players in the field a mathematical chance. AFP

Martin defends his world timetrial title

V A L K E N B U R G , NETHERLANDS: Germany’s Tony Martin on Wednesday successfully defended his world time-trial title, beating US rider Taylor Phinney by five seconds over 45.7km in Valkenburg, the Netherlands. The race between Martin and Phinney was the highlight of the competition and saw the German clock an average speed of 46.8 kmph. After his narrow victory, he lay flat out on the ground to recover. The 27-year-old caught Alberto Contador around the 30km mark after starting two minutes behind the Spaniard, who recently won the Tour of Spain. He eventually finished in

ninth spot. Phinney, 22, had mixed feelings over taking second spot. “I had a very good season up until the Olympics,” said Phinney, who suffered double frustration in London finishing fourth in both the time-trial and the road race. After that I prepared for the world championships. If someone had said beforehand I would win the silver medal I would have been happy.

COLOMBO: India and Australia gained full points from their opening matches at the World Twenty20 with contrasting wins against lesserranked sides on Wednesday. India, sent in to bat, took advantage of their rivals’ butter-fingered display to recover from a bad start and post 159-5, with Virat Kohli topscoring with 50 off 38 balls. The Afghans, batting with gay abandon, raced to a comfortable 75-2 in the 12th over before a late collapse saw the non-Test side bowled out for 136 with three balls to spare. Mohammad Nabi was the star batsman with an aggressive 31 off 17 balls with two boundaries and as many sixes, while Karim Sadiq made 26 and skipper Nawroz Mangal chipped in with 22. Seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji and left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh claimed three wickets each and offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin took two, but India were fortunate to emerge unscathed. The Afghans continued to attack till the end, but the loss of regular wickets cost them an unlikely win. Tall left-arm seamer Shapoor

Zardan had given the Afghans a superb start when he removed openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag by the fifth over with only 22 runs on the board. But Afghanistan, playing their second World Twenty20, were let down by a shoddy display in the field, dropping four catches, two of them return catches by Nabi. “We could probably have done better,” said Mangal. “Our shot selection was poor, and we should have fielded better, But we are satisfied that we could restrict the mighty Indian batting to below 160.” Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the Twenty20 format allowed lesser-ranked sides to give their rivals a tought fight. “The format is such that if one batsman or bowler has a great day, it could change the result of the match,” said Dhoni. “It was still a good performance by us, but not a great one. “To be honest, there are a lot of areas we have to improve.” India play defending champions England next in Colombo on Sunday. Afghanistan await England at the same venue on Friday. The top two teams from the group will advance to the Super Eights round.

Watson rocks Ireland

COLOMBO: Shane Watson pounded Ireland with both bat and ball as Australia began their World Twenty20 campaign with an emphatic seven-wicket victory in Colombo on Wednesday. Watson grabbed three wickets as Ireland were restricted to 123-7 and then smashed 51 off 30 balls to help Australia surpass the modest total in the 16th over of the group B match. The New South Wales allrounder put on 60 for the first wicket with David Warner (26) in seven overs, and 31 off 18 balls for the second with Michael Hussey, before he was run out in the 11th over. the man of the match. “We knew how important the game was to make a statement,” he said. “I had been thinking about how to bowl the first over for about a day and it worked out nicely.”

Barely 3,000 spectators were present at the 35,000-capacity Premadasa stadium to watch Australia teach the non-Test nation a cricketing lesson in the first ever T20 clash between the two sides. Australia, who lost to England in the final of the 2010 World T20 in the Caribbean, had briefly slipped below Ireland in the T20 rankings earlier this month. The slump started with the first ball of the innings, which skipper William Porterfield hooked down fine-leg’s throat to the great delight of bowler Watson. “We did not have a great start; we tried to get a platform but that did not happen,” said Porterfield. “I can’t fault the lads because they tried their best.” AFP

CALLS IT A DAY

CLOTHING TROUBLE

Hayden retires from all forms of cricket

Matthew Hayden, the veteran Australian opener has called time on his glittering playing career, opting not to play in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 series this year. SYDNEY: Veteran Australian opener Matthew Hayden has called time on his glittering playing career, opting not to play in Australia’s domestic Twenty20 series this year, his Brisbane Heat team said Thursday. The Heat said that after lengthy discussions, Hayden, 40, had opted not to return for a final series after signing as their marquee player for last season’s inaugural T20 Big Bash League. Hayden, who retired from Test cricket in 2009, played for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League in 2010. He took a sabbatical from crick-

et before returning to play for the Brisbane team in 2011-12. “I will be pursuing my initial intention and agreement with the Heat of moving from the pitch to the boardroom, where I hope to continue to make a meaningful contribution to the Big Bash League and the Brisbane Heat,” Hayden said in a statement. “I also plan to be very active in promoting and supporting the Brisbane Heat both on and off the field, and to contribute to the long-term success of the franchise.” Hayden said cricket would remain a significant part of his life. SOUTH AFRICA VS ZIMBABWE

HAMBANTOTA: High-flying South Africa batsman Hashim Amla said his team was ready for their African neighbours Zimbabwe in their Group C match of the World Twenty20 at Hambantota on Thursday. Zimbabwe were smarting from a big 82-run defeat at the hands of hosts Sri Lanka, with mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis registering best figures of 6-8 in all Twenty20 internationals in the tournament opener on Tuesday. Amla, said Zimbabwe will come down hard in their last chance to stay in the tournament. “Zimbabwe are a professional team, they must want to improve on their performance but we are coming well prepared so whatever they bring to the party, obviously we need to be better than that,” Amla said on Wednesday. COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s police raided a factory turning out counterfeit ICC World Twenty20 T-shirts and seized stocks of spurious merchandise, a senior officer said Wednesday. Deputy Inspector-General Anura Senanayake said they carried out the crackdown on fake World Twenty20 merchandise following a complaint from the International Cricket Council (ICC) over trade mark infringements. “We have arrested a person who produced fake T-shirts and recovered stocks from several retail outlets,” Senanayake told AFP. “Investigations are underway.” The ICC said local manufacturers were in the process of turning out “large quantities” of fake team shirts belonging to the 12 countries competing in the World Twenty20 tournament, which opened in Sri Lanka Tuesday and ends on October 7.

ers” for their slumps in major events since being readmitted to international cricket in 1992, South Africa look to end their 14year title wait after winning the ICC’s knock out tournament in 1998. For that, Amla thinks, a winning start was important. “I think we need to start well, each T20 game is different and getting a victory for a good start, that’s what we are looking for. That has been our aim, fortunately we’ve had a good preparation coming here,” said Amla. Led by the gutsy AB de Villiers, South Africa boost of a strong batting line-up with Jacques Kallis as their mainstay besides having a varied attack with Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel spearheading the pace department and Johan Botha and Robin Petersen as quality spinners. Amla said South Africa’s recent showings in all three forms of the game has lifted their confidence.

COLOMBO: Reigning World T20 champions England overcame a batting failure to bounce back and defeat Pakistan by 15 runs in a warm-up match in Colombo on Wednesday. England, shot out for 111 after electing to take first strike, hit back to restrict Pakistan to 96-9 on a bowlerfriendly pitch at the P. Sara Oval. Danny Briggs, a 21-

year-old left-arm spinner, claimed three wickets for 15 runs after being asked to open the bowling by England’s captain Stuart Broad. Seamer Jade Dernbach finished with three for 14 as Pakistan’s batsmen faltered against both pace and spin. Asad Shafiq’s 20 was the highest score as seven batsmen failed to reach double figures. AFP

Players stuck to each other: Kabir COLOMBO: Afghanistan coach Kabir Khan has credited his team's respectable performance against India in the World T20 opener here to the players who "stuck by each other during difficult times." "It's the unity among the players that has led to this improved show. This team is one unit. The players have faced a lot of difficult times due to war in the country and being in the camps," Khan said. "There are

times when a player has faced problems as his family has struggled. In such conditions, the others in the team rally around that person and help him like their own family members," he added. The coach seemed happy with his team's performance against India but hoped that they get to play international matches more often in order to bridge the gap between them and top international teams. STEVE GRIFFITHS Agence France-Presse LONDON: Juventus stunned Champions League holders Chelsea as Fabio Quagliarella’s late strike rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge and ruined Oscar’s command performance for the Blues on Wednesday. Oscar marked his first start for Chelsea with an impressive brace that included a stunning solo effort to fire Roberto Di Matteo’s side into a 2-0 lead before half-time in their Group E opener. But the Brazil midfielder’s heroics were in vain thanks to a gutsy recovery from the Italian champions, who reduced the deficit before the break through Arturo Vidal and salvaged a point with 10 minutes left thanks to Quagliarella’s clinical finish. sign Oscar from Internacional during the close-season, will have been encouraged by his new recruit’s eye-catching dis-

play, it was Chelsea’s defensive frailties that were the defining factor. “We found ourselves in a great position to win the game

and we only got a draw but we knew we were playing a quality side,” Di Matteo told Sky Sports. “We feel a little deflated because we were ahead but it’s going to be a tough group.” Asked about Oscar’s performance, Di Matteo added: “We were just waiting for the right game for him, it was wonderful to watch. The second goal was fantastic.” The Champions League trophy was paraded around Stamford Bridge by military personnel just before kick-off. And the fond memories of their final triumph over Bayern Munich in May seemed to inspire Di Matteo’s side as they set the early tempo. But Juventus had a glorious chance to snatch the lead against the run of play midway through the half. Barzagli floated a long pass over the top of the Chelsea defence and Claudio Marchisio’s run evaded the offside trap.

Fergie files 100th win IAN WHITTELL Agence France-Presse MANCHESTER: Sir Alex Ferguson’s 100th Champions League victory was hardly one to remember as Manchester United beat Galatasary 1-0 at Old Trafford but it was more memorable for Portuguese winger Nani surprising his veteran manager by appointing himself penalty taker. For the third consecutive match, United missed a penal-

ty, Nani halting in his run-up to try and wrong foot goalkeeper Fernando Muslera before seeing his attempt easily saved. After Robin van Persie’s miss against Southampton and Javier Hernandez’s failure from the penalty spot against Wigan in the weekend 4-0 victory, it was an embarrassing and potentially costly error by Nani. United only led 1-0 at the time of his miss early in the second half.

GLASGOW: Celtic were held to a goalless draw by Group G rivals Benfica at Parkhead on Wednesday. Despite a frantic start the home side failed to test Benfica keeper Artur Moraes and it was the Portuguese who came closest with Fraser Forster doing well to deny Moreno Rodrigo’s shot. The keeper had to be sharp to denied Ezequiel Garay at the start of the second half while Celtic had a penalty appeal turned down after James Forrest fell in the box as neither side could make the breakthrough. Messi saves Barça from Spartak TIM HANLON Agence France-Presse BARCELONA: Lionel Messi (above) came to the rescue with a late double to earn Barcelona a 3-2 victory over Group G opponents Spartak Moscow on Wednesday as the Catalans stuttered in the opening match of their Champions League campaign. Barca are aiming for a third Champions trophy in five years but could have had their first home defeat in the competition in nearly three years when Romulo gave the visitors the lead on the hour mark. The hosts have made a blistering start in La Liga with four straight wins and went ahead early on through Cristian Tello, but an own-goal from Dani Alves after 29 minutes brought Spartak back into the contest.
