Youth ensnares minor, held The youth married the minor, claiming that he was a rich bachelor from Gujarat. She escaped when she found that he was already married and planned to push her into flesh trade. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com
According to the girl and her mother, the youth was trying to snare poor girls, marry them and use them for flesh trade.
A
minor Hyderabadi girl from a poor family, who thought herself lucky when a ‘rich’ Gujarati boy married her, later found to her horror that he was neither rich nor a bachelor but had a wife and two children back home. When her ‘husband’ and his first wife tried to initiate her into flesh trade, she escaped and returned home. The Tandur police have now picked up the man, Dinesh of Latur, and a mediator, Asima, who had arranged the marriage. Vidisha (name changed), a minor, is the only daughter of Shantamma, a widow, living at Indiranagar in Tandur of RR district. When Asima approached her and introduced the smartlooking Dinesh as a rich boy
from Gujarat who owns a multistorey building, other properties, three cars and a big bank balance, Shantamma fell for it. The
mediator said all the marriage expenditures plus a ‘packet of money’ would be paid to the girl’s mother, as he is very ‘chari-
table’. Accordingly, the girl’s mother arranged the marriage on July 5, after concealing Vidisha’s true age. Soon after the marriage, Dinesh took the girl to his native village, where she was shocked to find he lived in a hutment and had a wife and two kids. His wife began to abuse her and later sweet-talked her to cash in on her youth. Suffering agony and helplessness in an alien place, she underwent hell, Vidisha explained to RR district SP D Rajkumari. Somehow, she man-
aged to escape and came back to her mother. According to the girl and her mother, the youth was trying to snare poor, young girls, marry them and use them for the flesh trade. He would act well: good looking and young, Dinesh wore expensive clothes and went around in posh cars (borrowed or hired) claiming to be a rich kid from Gujarat. He spoke a bit of English, used expensive perfume and spent liberally to trap potential prey. Tandur circle inspector Srinivas picked up Dinesh and Asima and charged them under various sections for cheating, marrying a minor and indulging in flesh trade. The girl was subjected to medical tests and it was proved that she is a minor. During interrogation, it was revealed that Asima got `80,000 from Dinesh to help him trap the girl.

Missing person n Mahesh Konagala
T
he leader of a student group at Osmania University, Mahesh Konagala, has been absconding for the last few days, for unknown reasons. Konagala leads Telangana Vidyarthi Ikya Vedika (TVIV), which fights mainly for a separate Telangana state. Earlier, he used to be part of Swatantra JAC, but due to differences with the office members, he left the organisation and set up TVIV. Members of his own group have put up posters all over the campus which read, ‘Mahesh Konagala is a Telangana enemy’. They have also called him names like ‘drohi’ and ‘vasool raja’. The posters mention Konagala had taken `80,000 from the family of an intermediate student, but could not get her a seat in college. They allege that he had taken money from many students.

Moreover, they allege that he joined hands with Congress party MLA from Parkala constituency, Konda Surekha, and took `4 lakh from her. Surekha was unavailable for comment.
The posters state: “When a Dalit student in Medipally was troubled by her principal, he threatened him and took `50,000. He damaged a film set and later took `5,000 from the producer.

Hence, we ban him from the position of president.” His group members are on the lookout for him. “What he did was wrong. Took money from sources but never used it for the group. In his personal life, let him do anything, but he should not get TVIV’s name spoilt. We won’t leave him when he comes,” says J Shankar, TVIV party core committee member. The Osmania University police have not received any complaint against Konagala. “Until now, we have not got a complaint, so we cannot take any

Exciting Aam Aadmi vs BC bout in the offing Congress ‘hand’ finds itself in a monkey-wrench with the TDP playing BC card. The game was kick-started by the desperate TDP, which was pushed to a corner by the Congress and its derivative, the YSRC. Beaten black and blue in the electoral arena in the past two years, the TDP thought the BC a good weapon to fight back. Accordingly, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu early last month declared that his party would give 50 per cent seats to BCs in the local elections and at least 100 tickets to the BCs in the Assembly. The YSRC was not far behind. It showcased the love affairs the late YSR had with BCs and pledged similar support. It is not seats alone, they (YSRC) would ensure victory to 100 BC MLAs. “It is like satisfaction guaranteed or money back,”

Backward castes are being aggressively wooed by the TDP and YSRC and each is promising moon and mars to the BCs, who constitute some 50 per cent of the population. “They are indulging in a dangerous game,” said APCC secretary Rasool Khan (right). “BC is not a monopoly of any party. CPI to launch APSRTC sets new ‘Praja Poru Yatra’ benchmarks in earnings To mount pressure on the Union government to announce road map for bifurcation of the State.
C
PI State secretary K Narayana has said that his party would organize a ‘Praja Poru Yatra for Telangana’ from August 25 to September 3 to mount pressure on the Union government to announce a road map for bifurcation of the State. Releasing a poster related to the yatra at Makhdoom Bhavan on Monday, Narayana said the yatra would start on August 25 at Palvancha in Khammam district and pass through Nalgonda, Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad, Medak, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Adilabad and Warangal districts. It will end at Warangal city and a public meeting would be held in the city on September 3. The CPI leader demanded that the Congress immediately announce its stand on the separate Telangana state
issue instead of asking other parties to announce their stands. He alleged that the Centre was trying to evade the issue in the name of achieving consensus among various political parties. Narayana also demanded that the state government declare a medical emergency in the state as it failed to control dengue and deaths of infants in Tirupati and Warangal district hospitals. The CPI leader also demanded that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy immediately accept the resignation of roads and buildings minister Dharmana Prasada Rao, who was accused of committing grave irregularities in land allocation to VANPIC. He said the State cabinet would lose its moral right to continue in office if the chief minister failed to accept Rao’s resignation. NSS

he APSRTC is setting new benchmarks in daily earnings, as the novel measures it has taken up have proved to be fruitful in containing discrepancies, both technically and manually. With the recent move to cultivate more professionalism among its personnel, it appears the organisation, which was amassing only losses, is setting new standards. Chairman M Satyanarayana Rao has applauded the efforts of the crew for reaching higher profits. “The same commitment, which brought the organisation `24 crore a day, should be maintained,” he said, while addressing the employees on Independence Day. On August 13, the APSRTC set an all-time record of `23.95 crore. The OR (occupancy ratio) was recorded as 97, which is unlikely when it comes to general working days. This was cited as the biggest achievement considering the past 80 years. The earlier records that were set in
the recent years were during festival seasons like Sankranti, Dussera, Shivaratri and Medaram Jatara. “This could be achieved only because of the personnel commitment and because of running special buses according to the needs of the passengers,” Rao pointed out. Earlier, the APSRTC recorded the highest income, `23.60 crore, on February 2 this year on Medaram and Shivaratri. An OR of 80 per cent was recorded. On
January 17, 2011, it recorded `20.30 crore and an OR of 91 per cent for Sankranti season. Similar was the record the previous year on January 18, `22.06, the highest until now. he State government is contemplating to move the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict of State High Court of quashing the appointment of Dinesh Reddy as the DGP, it is reliably learnt. Though the High Court verdict will no way disturb the continuance of Dinesh Reddy as the State police chief, yet the government feels otherwise. Sources close to CMO says acceptance of the HC directive may pose problems. Like many other states, the Kiran government was also of the firm opinion that the appointments of State administration’s highest posts like the chief secretary and DGP should be left to the discretionary power
of the party in power, instead of following the set guidelines rigidly. As per the Central guidelines, the State government has to submit a list half-a-dozen officers in order of their seniority to the UPSC and the latter in turn will shortlist it to three and send it back for consideration. One among those shortlisted three officers would be considered for the appointment of DGP. Apparently, as many as 16 states are not following the norm. The Andhra Pradesh government is contemplating to appeal to the Centre to amend the guidelines to choose and empower the State government to appoint their chief secretaries and DGPs. NSS

Power crisis threatens peace As the rains fail, the weather goes dry and power failure becomes frequent, protests are breaking out in many parts of the State.

he vexed issue of energy crisis leading to long hours of power outage is slowly slipping into a law and order situation as incidents of people venting their anger on electricity offices are increasing. The recent protest in Patancheru of Medak district saw hundreds barge into the power station and hold up officials for the 24 hour power holiday declared in the industrial district. "You (officials) are scoundrels. You misuse power," was heard in the din. "People are identifying officials as the cause of the trouble." lamented an electricity engineer. On Sunday, agencies recorded over half a dozen incidents involving workers venting their ire over local substations and authorities. The TDP has taken up the issue. The party chief has exhorted to highlight the situation and fallout of it on agriculture.Senior TDP leader M Venkateshwara Rao said, “I doubt if the CM has reviewed the situation in the past three months. All the protests raised about the gas basin issue forced him to visit the Centre and that is all. Given the huge losses that farmers are incurring, I will not surprised if the agitation turns violent. ”The TDP has planned a massive State-wide agitation in

minor scuffle ensued when TRS MLAs and other leaders were detained this morning when they tried to carry out a protest march at the APTransco office in Khairatabad. They were demanding a 7-hour uninterrupted power supply to farmers. Led by TRS leader Harish Rao and Eetala Rajendra, a dozen or so MLAs and MLCs tried to meet the APTransco. They said the government was meting out step-motherly treatment to farmers while it supplied uninterrupted power to malls and businesses. The deficit 63 MU has forced the State to reel backwards from power deficit as industries are on the verge of a lockdown. According to C Rama Rao, grid operations director, the City is being supplied by an additional 1,300 MW of power directed from sources including private discoms. “We are not trying to overdraw as it may result in the collapse of the entire grid,” he

SITUATION GRIM
It is not only the agriculture sector, the industrial situation is pretty bad. In the past few weeks, there have been a flurry of meetings with the State government, the AP Transco and the FAPCCI, meeting to find a solution. As of now, there are 6,00,000 temporary employees engaged in industrial units who run the risk of being jobless if the crisis is not averted. Secretary general of FAPCCI M Rajeshwara Rao said, “The current energy deficit is 65 MU but for a full profitable function-
ing of the industrial sector, it requires 80 to 85 MU of power. Now with the load relief schedules and power holidays, there is about a 60 per cent loss in production value every day. If we estimate the value of one full day of power loss it equates to `1,000 crore. As of now, we are working at a loss of 70 to 75 per cent of our generation capacity which is rough `700 crore loss.” Many industrial units within the City currently function at 50 per cent of their total capacity, which in a week would mean an average loss of `3,500 crore. “If you estimate the losses since the beginning of the power holiday
schedules, the last two months have drained at least `20,000 crore,” Rajeshwara Rao says. The numbers are set to increase if the generation capacity is not raised. While the load reliefs have seeped into the Kharif season, priority of power supply has been given to the agricultural sector. Here too, it has been inconsistent. While private Discoms have been approached and 700MW of power has been bought through bidding. They say that they are ready to abide by the increased tariffs. But they grunt that welfare is not promising free power but actually generating power.

fter Eid load shedding will return. The load relief schedule will mean that the City will go back to its daily three-hour power cuts. Even as the City rejoiced, people in Medak district had to do with candles. Irate farmers and businessmen attacked local substations, ransacking the offices and locking up officers. Their anger was directed at the three-day power holiday. In the current scenario, most of the micro businesses and
traders are forced to make do with power for only 13 days a month, thanks to the many restrictions imposed on them. This was done to accommodate the load for the Kharif season. Despite the shortage, the CPDCL managed to pull through by a one-hour power cut for the past one month. Industries had to go offline for two days for the City to celebrate. Presently the industrial sector is going through a three-day weekly power holiday. Their timetables were affected as they were forced to shut down from 6:30pm to 10.30pm every evening. The power holi-
days vary depending on what feeders the industries drew their power from. Those drawing power from 33 kv feeders were handed out a 3-day holiday and those drawing power from 11 kv feeders were given 2-day cuts. A senior engineer from AP Transco remarked, “We cannot appease everybody. On one hand the government promised free power for farmers, on the other hand they promise to get power supply back to the industries. We also need to keep a steady flow in the City. All of this with no supply coming in from the grid and dry reservoirs.”

WAS IT A COUP OR REVOLUTION? LET HISTORY DECIDE, PARK SAYS
Park Geun-Hye, who in 2007 described her father’s 1961 takeover as a revolution to save the country, has lately moderated her stance. In May she said “history will decide” whether it was a coup or a revolution.
SOUTH KOREA
History beckons Park
After winning Prez nomination of her conservative ruling New Frontier Party, Park Geun-Hye, the daughter of an assassinated dictator, prepares to make history in a male-dominated society. SEOUL: Park Geun-Hye, the daughter of an assassinated dictator, will make history in maledominated South Korea if her campaign to become the country’s first female president succeeds. Park, who Monday won the nomination of her conservative ruling New Frontier Party, lost both her parents to gunmen while she was still in her twenties but pressed ahead undaunted with her own political career. Now 60 and a veteran politician, she enjoys high popularity with conservative and older voters nostalgic for the rapid economic growth under her father Park Chung-Hee, who ruled 1961-1979 after seizing power in a coup. Park Geun-Hye is seen as standing a good chance of victory in the December 19 election and is ahead in opinion polls. Korea University professor Lee Nae-Young cited her proven leadership skills, political experience and strong power base in her home province of North Gyeongsang. But Lee cautioned that she is seen by many young, urban voters as an autocratic figure who does not communicate with ordinary people “probably because of her personal background”. Despite her privileged upbringing, Park has demonstrated a tough streak. In 2006 an attacker at an election event where she was speaking slashed her face with a knife, leaving a wound that needed 60 stitches. In this April’s general election she impressed voters with her tireless campaigning, shaking hands till she had to bandage one wrist. Park was born on February 2, 1952, in the southern city of Daegu, and was nine when her

She left the presidential palace after her father was shot dead by his spy chief in 1979 and began her political career in 1998 as a lawmaker in her home town. In 2007, she narrowly lost the conservative party’s primary to Lee Myung-Bak, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a second five-year presidential term. The legacy of her father, who still receives mixed evaluations, was the source of her popularity and a limiting factor as well, said Korea University’s Lee. Park senior was widely praised for the country’s dramatic economic development but reviled for his human rights record.

Park Geun-Hye, who in 2007 described her father’s 1961 takeover as a revolution to save the country, has lately moderated her stance. In May she said “history will decide” whether it was a coup or a revolution. She is also invoking the memory of her late mother Yuk Young-Soo, still fondly remembered by many as a wise and calm first lady. Supporters praise Park, who never married and leads an intensely private life, for what they see as her calm and principled leadership. Opponents portray her as aristocratic and aloof. Her restrained style reflects her secluded life as a privileged child in the presidential Blue House, said Kookmin University professor Cho Choong-Bin. Her father’s legacy has both pros and cons but complicates her efforts to broaden her power base beyond conservatives, he said. Sejong Institute analyst Jin Chang-Soo said Park’s main appeal is her strong-willed character and clean image. She also has a track record as a skilled politician, helping her party secure strong electoral results in 2004, 2006 and this year, earning her the nickname “Queen of Elections”. She stresses “economic democratisation” and expanded welfare in a country with a growing wealth gap and high youth unemployment. The economy remains dominated by the mighty conglomerates fostered by her father. North Korea has lashed out at Park, even though she has distanced herself somewhat from President Lee’s hard line on cross-border relations. “A dictator’s bloodline cannot change away from its viciousness,” its news agency said in April. ndhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) has been coming closer to the hearts of tourists with wide range of initiatives. It is playing a crucial role in developing and maintaining the tourism infrastructure of the government. Sandeep Kumar Sultania, former vice-chairman and managing director, shared his views before he left for USA to do Masters in International Development Policy in Duke University, a one-year sponsored programme by the Indian government on policy-making. On talking about the achievements of APTDC during his stint, Sandeep said, “We want to become closer to tourists and brought online booking facility. Earlier, People had to come to CRO office for booking tickets and we realised the culture of booking tickets is changing. Customers were not ready to take the pain of being in the queue and the way forward is to take booking at their doorsteps through online.” The other successful achievement was the 24*7 SMS call centre. “There had to be interactive mechanism between

the customer and organisation. The customer should be able to inform the small complaints to the APTDC. In hospitality industry, the customer complaints may look small but they are very much vital and timely in nature. For instance, a customer doesn’t get hot water from the geyser. It may look small complaint from outsider point to view but it is a big complaint from a tourist point of view. Generally, the complaints were informed to the person who is nearest to the tourist. The organisation was
not aware to what extent those problems were solved. All the immediate customer service employees (servers to bus conductors) always give a good picture to higher officials rather than explaining in what is happening in reality. “The issue was solved by starting 24*7 SMS call centre, where in the customer able to send his complaints by an SMS for unresolved problems. The SMS which tourist sends will go to all the higher officials like ED, DGM and GM and to the respective manager who has to
solve the problem. This has brought accountability and created psychological pressure on manager to quickly respond and solve the problem immediately. It is obvious that any time he may get call from the higher officials for which he is answerable. This kind of monitoring helped the organisation to get a step closer to the customer.” Talking about developing new tourist spots, he said, “The basic duty of the government is to first identify the spot and slowly develop it and expect a return in a long run. The private sector will join and take it forward once the spot gains momentum. The government has a social role and had to run even at losses for developing the property or a new tourist place. For instance, we give stipulated time for a rural property to make profits. If we close the property thinking that it is not generating enough revenues, which will close the tourist spot forever. Once the place is developed, profits will automatically follow.” “We always keep common man in mind in designing the tariffs. We have non-AC buses and dormitories for the people who want to see the places with a small budget. The margins are always kept low to make it affordable,” he added.

Police gear up for MNS march MUMBAI: Mumbai Police geared up for an MNS procession and rally in the city scheduled Tuesday afternoon, 10 days after a rally by Muslims turned violent and left two dead. The city police had Monday night grudgingly permitted MNS to hold a rally but barred the party from taking out a fivekm procession from Girgaum Chowpatty to Azad Maidan, as Mumbaikars braced for disruption of normal life. A defiant MNS chief Raj Thackeray declared Monday that whatever happened, the party would take out the protest procession, compelling the police to move into top gear. Two people were killed and over 40 injured Aug 11 after a protest by several Muslim organisations to condemn the alleged attacks on Muslims in Myanmar and the Assam riots turned violent. Wiser by the incident, strong security arrangements were put in place since early morning across Mumbai, including two highways slicing the city, all major roads leading to south Mumbai, major railway stations and other locations en route.

Elderly hesitate to seek legal aid
Battling darkness to guide the rest He has to his credit over 80 technological solutions that range from a talking mobile phone to talking books.
O
ver two decades back, visually impaired student Dipendra Manocha stood outside DU’s Hindu College waiting to get an application written. After the life-altering struggle of finding a writer, Manocha set himself on a mission — helping the blind read and write. He introduced reading aids and support mechanisms for the visually challenged. Today Manocha juggles between managing three such organisations that help the blind ‘read’. “I was a research student at Hindu College at that time searching for someone who could write a simple application for me. It was baffling because I was literate and the dependency made me feel handicapped. That very moment I decided there has to be a solution to this. A blind needs to be empowered to be able to read and write on his own,” Manocha told IANS. Even after losing his vision at the age of 12 due to a genetic disorder, Manocha completed his research in Indian classical music. Throughout his education, the dependence on a reader and writer was hard-hitting, he says. It was in 1993 that Manocha left his full-time career in music and gave up a government job to plunge into the dark world of the visually impaired. Manocha still feels it was the toughest call of his life. “It was
Dipendra Manocha
really tough as I was leaving a PhD fellowship and had to be financially dependent on my parents for long,” he says. “Why do we confine disabled in cliches? Is it fair to ask a blind engineer to stop thinking of technology and indulge in candle making,” Manocha questioned. The thought of empowering the blind clicked in his mind. In 2005, Manocha received the national award for his contributions in the area of disability. “I saw this computer with voice commands at NAB after which I said to myself — this is exactly what I need! So we started a journey on coming up with more such technology-based solutions for reading, writing,” he explained. In 1993, when he started
working at the National Association for Blind (NAB), he came across a computer with speech synthesiser and screenreading software. “The idea at that time was not just rehabilitation, but to bring the blind into the mainstream,” Manocha, the former director, IT services at NAB, said. He also took the first printout from a sophisticated braille printing machine at NAB. He now has to his credit over 80 technological solutions for the blind. The aids and appliances range from a talking mobile phone to digital talking books at lowest possible cost. Interestingly, Manocha fondly remembers the first novel he was able to read on this ‘talking computer’. “Oh! It was Dracula. It was a phenomenal feeling,” the former musician breaks into a laugh. He quit his PhD in classical music in 2003 to set up the Saksham Trust for empowering the blind. Over the last two decades, Manocha and his team have helped provide publications in accessible formats to those who cannot read normal print, easycomputer operating tools and unique online braille library with 19,000 downloadable books in digital format. Some of the recent developments in his organisation includes a talking thermometer for `250, a talking qwerty phone and a digital handycam among others. IANS
NEW DELHI: A major chunk of the over 100 million senior citizens in India, whose numbers are expected to grow in next three or four decades, still lead a difficult life despite a drastic improvement in terms of education, health, life expectancy and financial Independence, according to a new survey. “Majority of them still lead a life full of miseries, disparity and worries due to lack of family support, diminishing social and traditional values and sense of loneliness fast developing among them. They remain vulnerable just because of their old age,” says a new pan Indian study by Agewell Foundation. Under a major finding of the study, 14.34 per cent of the respondents felt the need of legal protection in old age. Only 7,171 elderly out of 50,000 interviewed said that there were some occasions in their life when they felt they should go for legal action against their counterparts. Only 1,086 had opted for legal route. Again 5 of every six older persons did not file any legal case for seeking justice. The Delhi-based NGO based the survey on a representative sample of 50,000 senior citizens (29,000 from rural areas and 21,000 from urban areas) spread across
300 districts covering 25 states and Union Territories. It was found that judiciary can play a bigger role in sensitizing society towards needs and rights of older persons. Interviewers also collected input from legal practitioners including judges, legal advisors, counselors and human rights activists regarding older persons legal problems. “I have been sleeping on the streets for over 10 years. After the death of my husband my children kicked me out from our own house. They forced me to wander here and there in my old age without any kind of support, medical care and medicines. Anyhow I am alive today,” says Madhumati Biswas, 81. According to legal practitioners, the number of court cases pertaining to older persons has risen over the years. Out of total 1000 legal practitioners, 345 said that in their opinion majority of older persons are involved in house or land property related cases, 288 opined that older persons are involved in casess related to Section 498 A (anti dowry legal provision). At least 145 people dealing with legal matters, said that most of older persons who are involved in legal cases are involved in cases of domestic violence. PTI

Palmer had alleged he was harassed at work, sidelined and even received death threats for refusing to participate in an alleged Infosys scheme to use workers on business visitor, or B1 visas, for tasks that required an H-1B work visa. Thompson ruled Monday that some of claims brought by Palmer against Infosys aren’t covered by a state law. “Without question, the alleged electronic and telephonic threats are deeply troubling,” wrote Thompson. “Indeed, an argument could be made that such threats against whistleblowers, in particular, should be illegal.” But Thompson wrote that “the issue before the court, however, is not whether Alabama should make these alleged wrongs actionable, but whether they are, in fact, illegal under state law. This court cannot rewrite state law.” Consequently, “this court must conclude that, under current Alabama law, Palmer has no right to recover from Infosys”, wrote Thompson. IANS

US warns Assad on chemical weapons
Obama said the US would regard any recourse by Damascus to its deadly arsenal as crossing a “red line”. ALEPPO: US President Barack Obama warned Syria of “enormous consequences” if it resorts to chemical weapons, as a female Japanese reporter was killed while covering clashes in the northern city of Aleppo. Obama put President Bashar al-Assad’s regime on notice Monday that, while he had not ordered intervention “at this point”, Washington was “monitoring the situation very carefully” and had put together a range of contingency plans. The president said the United States would regard any recourse by Damascus to its deadly arsenal as crossing a “red line”. “There would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front or the use of chemical weapons... That would change my calculations significantly,” he told reporters at a White House briefing. Syria’s admission in July

‘A STITCH IN TIME...’ As debate rages over the ethics of infant circumcision, a study published Monday said falling rates of the once-routine procedure in the United States could cost billions of dollars in health costs. “We find that each circumcision not performed will lead to $313 of increased expenditures over that lifetime,” said senior investigator Aaron Tobian, of the Johns Hopkins University team that did the study. The number pits health care costs if the boy is circumcised — about $291 for the procedure — against the projected cost of treating infections or cancers.
What I think that these comments (Todd Akin’s) do underscore is why we should not have a bunch of politicians, a majority of whom are men, making health care decisions on behalf of women. Barack Obama US President

Pussy Riot: Punking Putin
T
here's a great story from the early days of The Clash. One day Mick Jones showed up to rehearsal with a song he'd written about his ex-girlfriend titled “I'm So Bored With You.” Joe Strummer liked the tune but decided the world didn't need another song about an ex-girlfriend, so he changed the subject to geopolitics, renamed it “I'm So Bored With the U.S.A.,” and a classic was born. As with most origin stories, that one is probably at least partly apocryphal, but it gets to the heart of the counterintuitive genius of both The Clash and punk itself. Punk culture is founded on the idea that behaving in a way that's aggressively opposite to what's expected of you is inherently righteous, and its very best manifestations have lived up to that. The Russian punk band Pussy Riot is one of those very best manifestations. Last week, three of its members — Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Yekaterina Samutsevich, and Maria Alyokhina — were sentenced to two years in prison for having the temerity to reveal that Russia's democracy is an emperor without clothes. The official charge against the three young women was “hooliganism,” which sounds like something out of a “Dennis the Menace” comic, and the trial itself was a cartoonish mix of judicial intimidation, religious hypocrisy and rote political thuggery. For those following from afar, the proceedings were flatly unbelievable — this New Republic piece is a withering blow-by-blow — and the verdict is a naked display of the worst sort of power, a bracing reminder that phrases like “freedom of speech” aren't just slogans for bumper-stickers. W
hen Republican challenger Mitt Romney chose the eminently photogenic Paul Ryan as his running mate and heir apparent, he must have thought he was finally getting his campaign back on track. Ryan, the most prominent budget policy wonk in the US House of Representatives, would bring the debate squarely back to the economy where, in the Republicans’ minds, it belongs. Attack President Barack Obama on his economic failings, paint a rosy picture of a Romney-Ryan future, and sail into the White House come January. Not so fast. Representative Todd Akin, running for the Senate in a close race against incumbent Claire McCaskill, had a different idea. In an interview with a local television station Sunday night, Akin uttered the astonishing view that women can prevent pregnancy if they really want to. “It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that [pregnancy resulting from rape is] really rare,” said Akin. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” This was used to justify his wholesale opposition to abortion, even in cases of rape and incest. Not that Akin excuses rape, exactly. “I think there should be
some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child,” he added. Akin’s comments have set off a firestorm to rival this summer’s blazes in the Midwest. His lack of knowledge of where babies come from is only part of the problem. Even more unbelievable is his reference to “legitimate” rape, once again bringing to the fore the old doubts about women’s accusations and men’s culpability, or lack thereof. Is it Akin’s opinion that if a woman conceives after what she claims is a rape, then perhaps she really wanted it all along? Hard to tell. But what is not at all difficult to discern is that this formerly obscure, gaffe-prone congressman might have just reframed the debate for the presidential race. Romney rushed to distance himself from Akin’s comments: “Congressman’s Akin [sic.] comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly,
wrong,” Romney said in a telephone interview with the National Review Online. “Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.” The Romney campaign also issued a disclaimer: “Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin’s statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape,’’ wrote a Romney campaign spokeswoman, Amanda Henneberg. Akin is being chastised: The national GOP is pulling funding from his campaign, and McCaskill is sitting pretty right about now. But the real punishment is likely to fall on Romney and Ryan. The pair will have a hard time running away from earlier positions on abortion and rape, and an even harder time dodging the re-emergence of women’s conviction that they are under attack from the
Republican Party. Romney has said, with his characteristic opacity, that he was “effectively pro-choice” in his early political career. In 2002, while running for governor of Massachusetts, a very liberal state, he announced that he would “preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose.” That is no longer operative, apparently. Romney now describes himself as adamantly pro-life. In fact, just five years after his heartfelt vow never to interfere with reproductive rights, he professed himself “delighted” at the prospect of signing in a bill to ban abortion nationally. With Ryan, a Catholic, the issue is even cloudier. Ryan is staunchly opposed to abortion, to funding for Planned Parenthood and, along with Akin, he co-sponsored a bill that sought to narrow the definition of rape, provoking a fierce outcry from women’s groups. He will find it difficult to walk back those views. “Todd Akin's case is unfortunately not the only and not the first of its kind,” said Dr. Sophia Yen, a pediatrician in Sunnyvale, Calif. Yen also founded and heads a nonprofit organization, Trust Women, dedicated to preventing teen pregnancy. “It is scary and dangerous that these lies are being spread and that people who are supposed to represent our interests in government are so gullible to lies,” she added. “There is absolutely a war on women,” said Yen. ndertaking a deadline is deadly business. TRS Chief K Chandrasekhar Rao is now finding himself in a tricky situation, as he had told his T-JAC and cadres that an announcement on Telangana would be coming by August 28. As the D-day approaches, KCR has no clue. The Centre has not committed itself to any such deadline, it is learnt. Caught in scores of issues like the latest Coalgate and stir for Lokpal Bill, New Delhi is in no position to thrash out a long-pending thorny issue like the Telangana. The TRS is now preparing itself to another bout of protracted war against the Congress during the world CBD meet which could turn the world’s eyes to the T issue, they believe. The State has a heavy job on its hands to deal with such an eventuality, as any law and order problem during the world meet could prove disastrous, political circles point out.

ould a carpet ban on tourism in all core tiger habitats in India actually save the big cat? Very unlikely. As the apex court's temporary ban on tourism in key tiger habitats ends on August 22, it will meet again then to analyse if tiger tourism can be worked out. There are thousands of people who depend on their daily bread on the big cat: safari organisers, those selling merchandise like tiger-print pyjamas, aprons, tablecloths, bedspreads. It’s been proved that the forest wing on its own cannot deal with poachers. A ban’s definitely not the answer.

atching travel shows on television has always been a special kind of torture. Especially when you know that come 9am, you’ll have to make your way to the same old office, sit in your airconditioned cubicle and spend the next eight hours staring glassily at a computer screen. Of course everyone would love to travel, you say, but some of us have to work for a living. True enough. Not all of us are jet-setting millionaires. But what if we let you in on a secret? There are a plethora of jobs that allow you to travel as part of your work, without blowing a massive hole in your pocket. Here are some of the most popular travel jobs you can consider.

Microsoft was the fastest to $100 bn in its day. It took them 25 years to reach the staggering figure. After being flat for years, their market cap has lingered around $260 bn. That is about a 6% gain in market cap per year over 16 years (although returns to shareholders have been higher due to dividends).
ESL TEACHER
Becoming an ESL (English as Second Language) teacher is one of the most popular ways to see the world while earning a decent sum. Most countries will demand a certification of some sort to check your proficiency in English, but if you’re comfortable with the language, the test is a breeze. However, the test is a little more stringent for nonnative English speakers, so brush up on your grammar skills. The type of work, conditions of living and the pay will vary from country to country, so do a thorough background check before heading off. The best part of the job is that teachers get a lot of free time to explore the place, as well as getting a chance to immerse themselves in local culture.
TOUR OPERATOR/TOUR GUIDE
Training and certification are not really necessary in this field, though a degree in tourism management might give you a head start. A fondness for travel, excellent people skills and a deep knowledge of the area are necessary in this profession. While hopping from country to country, leading tours and seeing the world sounds ideal, the demands of the job are high.
Some of the best professions to travel the world include:
WORK CULTURE
n Air hostess/steward n Pilot n Merchant Navy sailor n Cruise ship worker n Geologist/ archaeologist n Travel writer
You will be responsible for large groups of people and dealing with their demands and problems will not be easy. Most guided tours focus mainly on popular tourist sites, so if you’re interested in offbeat travel, this might not be the job for you.
VOLUNTEER WORK
The Peace Corps is probably the best known example of volunteer work that takes you overseas, but it isn’t the only one. There are a slew of NGOs that require people to volunteer for their projects in developing countries. While this is certainly not going to be a laid-back vaca-
tion, volunteering broadens your mind and helps you make a change at the grassroots level. Check out sites like www.idealist.org to find volunteering opportunities. If you are a doctor or a nurse, consider working with Medecins Sans Frontieres (doctors without borders; http://www.msfindia.in/) and finding jobs at www.travelnursing.com.
ORGANIC FARMING
If you’re interested in sustainable lifestyles and organic farming, consider becoming a w w o o f e r (http://www.wwoof.org/). The
organisation, World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) is a network which links volunteers with organic farmers around the world. You will not be paid for your work, but food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles are provided. This kind of volunteering is ideal if you are willing to immerse yourself in the culture of a country, live in rural surroundings and do physical work. Apart from working for a set number of hours on the farm, volunteers are usually free to explore the area.

Worried about your birth mark? Birthmarks might be quite harmless, but can cause some of us to worry that it’s a sign of something more sinister. However, doctors insist that there’s no reason to worry. ANISHAA KUMAR
anishaa.k@postnoon.com
“O
h that’s just my birthmark,” remarked Raina when a friend pointed out a small red patch on her arm. In most cases a birth mark is harmless and not a matter of concern but in certain cases one may be required to monitor it. In most cases one need not worry as most birthmarks are noncancerous. A birthmark refers to a type of skin colouration that exists since the time one is born. According to Dr Asna Anjum, consultant dermatologist, “A birthmark often called the nevus is a developmental defect. It is usually related to pigmentation hence is categorised as hypo and hyper. If the amount of pigment is more the birthmark is darker and if the pigment is less it is lighter. Usually such birthmarks are harmless and do not show any change in shape apart from a slight change due to expansion of the skin. But this is not something to be worried about” Birthmarks are of two type- pigmented birthmarks and vascular birthmarks. Vascular birthmarks or red birthmarks are markings due to the blood vessels while pigmented birthmarks refer to markings on the
skin that are different from the regular colour of one’s skin. They may be brown, black, bluish or blue-grey in colour. Concerns about birthmarks tend to trouble people when the birthmark is an outgrowth. Dr Asna says, “There may be a chance that an outgrowth (birthmark) may turn cancerous in the future but it depends a lot upon its depth (which level of the skin it is noticed in) and the type of outgrowth. But one cannot say that concerns should be raised about all of them. One should get it checked only if there is a noticeable change in size, structure, and colour or if there is any form of bleeding. In case a person does notice these changes then they should visit their dermatologist.” According to Dr K Sambasivaiah, senior consultant medical oncologist and clinical haematologist, KIMS, “Birthmarks turning cancerous is very rare. Moles on the other hand need to be looked at.”
biopsy is conducted on the entire outgrowth.” Dr Anjum says that usually it is advised that any outgrowth should be removed. If the outgrowth is light it can be removed surgically but when it is darker people may go for tattooing.
TESTING Talking about the testing, Dr Asna mentions, “If the outgrowth is big, a part of it may be taken and a skin biopsy is conducted. On the other hand if it is small it is completely removed and a

Walnuts may improve men's sperm quality A new study by UCLA has found that eating half a cup of walnuts a day improves sperm vitality. TALIA RALPH urns out sperm quality may be all in the nuts. Specifically, walnuts. According to a new study by researchers at UCLA and co-funded by the California Walnut Commission, walnuts may improve men's sperm quality. The study's scientists had 58 healthy men between the ages of 21 to 35 eat half a daily dose of walnuts, and had another group of 59 men avoid snacking on the tree nuts.
T
They checked both groups' sperm quality 12 weeks later, and found that those men who ate walnuts had improved sperm shape, movement, and vitality, and less chromosomal abnormalities than before they participated in the study, according to CBS News. "It would be
relatively easy to poke fun at studies, but there is increasing evidence to show that aspects of a man's diet can affect the number and quality of sperm produced by his testicles," Dr Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield. Walnuts are the
only nuts with significant omega-3 fatty acid levels, which some studies have connected to lowering male infertility, researcher Wendie Robbins of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health told WebMD. Around 70 million couples worldwide deal with subfertility or infertility, according to the research, and men are responsible for the difficulty conceiving in 30 to 50 per cent of those cases, CBS News reported. Speech reveals depression levels SYDNEY: Speech patterns can reveal the severity of depression as well as a patient's response to treatment, suggests a new study. The study, the largest of its kind in the world, found that improvement in patients diagnosed with depression and undergoing treatment can be monitored over the phone by looking at changes in speech. Adam Vogel, who heads the Speech Neuroscience Unit at Australia's University of Melbourne, said speech was a strong marker of brain health, and changes in how we sound reflected how well our brain was working, the journal Biological Psychiatry reports. "The speech of people with depression changes when they respond to treatment, becoming faster and with shorter pauses. Those with more severe depression produce longer pauses and have slower speaking rates," Vogel said, according to a Melbourne statement. The randomised controlled trial of 105 patients looked at vocal acoustic properties such as timing, pitch and intonation to see if they could provide reliable biomarkers to depression severity and responses to treatment. Patients were required to call an automated telephone system and leave samples of their speech, such as saying how they felt, reading a passage of text and reciting the alphabet. "This offers greater treatment flexibility as we can now check on our patients remotely, looking at their speech patterns even from remote or rural areas," said James Mundt, senior research scientist at the Centre for Psychological Consultation in Wisconsin, US. "We know that depressed patients have difficulties expressing themselves, so if we can improve how we assess depression, then we can improve how we treat it," added Mundt. IANS

Smoking mum increases child’s asthma risk WASHINGTON:Smoking while pregnant has been found to increase asthma risk in newborns. Researchers in Sweden said that the risk of developing asthma is 65 per cent higher in kids whose mothers smoked while pregnant. The study of over 20,000 chil-

of developing wheeze and asthma increased in a dose-response pattern in relation to cigarette consumption during the first three months of pregnancy." The risks stood even as other factors such as weight, gender was controlled for. "These results indicate that
the harmful effects of maternal smoking on the fetal respiratory system begin early in pregnancy, perhaps before the women is even aware that she is pregnant," Neuman said. The study was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. IANS

either Kristen Stewart nor Robert Pattinson will grace the final four Twilight Saga fan conventions, a spokesperson for the gatherings has confirmed. “We will have a super line-up of other Twilight stars and the weekend will be filled with special events, movie prop and costume displays, contests, panels, auctions, parties, exclusive merchandise, music and much more, including some surprises!,” explained Creation Entertainment, in an attempt to put their best spin on the bad news. “The passion and dedication of Twilight fandom has been amazing and we’re out to throw one last giant convention, a final gathering to see old friends that have made up the Twilight family.” Surprisingly, Taylor Lautner has also opted out of the fan fests scheduled to take place in Texas, Michigan, New Jersey and California in the weeks leading up to the November 16 release of Breaking Dawn Part II. No reason has been given for the stars pulling out, but it’s not hard to guess why RPatz and KStew might want to steer clear of each other publicly for as long as they can. Rob has been making the rounds for his film Cosmopolis, but Kristen has been MIA since her cheating scandal with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders was discovered last month.
i-Ri and Chris are not seeing each other (plus, Brown is currently in a relationship), but that doesn’t mean that the Barbados beauty has lost feelings for her ex-boyfriend. “We love each other and we probably always will, and that’s not anything that we’re going to try to change. He was my first love and I see that he loved me the same way... I truly love him,” Rihanna says.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

CAPTAIN’S VOICE
Smith upbeat about Australia challenge LONDON: South Africa may have gone to the top of the world Test rankings after their 2-0 series win in England but Proteas captain Graeme Smith insisted there’d be no complacency ahead of a tour of Australia. November will see South Africa in the unusual position of travelling to Australia, for much of the time since the Proteas’ re-admission to international cricket the world’s leading side, as favourites to win a Test series. However, the South Africa captain — speaking after a 51run win at Lord’s on Monday saw his side beat former England two Tests to nil with
one draw as the former number one team lost a home campaign for the first time since going down to the Smith-led Proteas in 2008 — was wary of the task ahead. “We need to have a strong base so when the wind blows we can handle ourselves,” he said. “We need to increase our bowling depth in case we get injuries and have players who can come in and perform.” “These guys have built a formidable unit but we have Australia next and that will be an awesome challenge for us. AFP
was ruled out before the series started with a career-ending eye injury. “We were able to post totals and build partnerships to get scores on the board which allowed out bowlers a little more freedom,” said South Africa captain Graeme Smith. “It allowed them to attack
and get the rewards. We caught well, too. To have won 2-0 is a great feeling.” On paper, South Africa appeared to have the stronger batting line-up and so it proved with England, despite a hundred from Alastair Cook, only making 385 in the first innings at The Oval. Significantly they were prevented from making a bigger score by fine fast bowling from Morne Morkel, who took four first innings wickets, before fellow quick Dale Steyn produced a superb return of five for 56 in the second. England’s attack lacked the same ‘bite’ with James Anderson’s nine wickets costing more than 40 runs apiece and fellow new-ball bowler Stuart Broad almost as expensive. They also lacked pure raw speed with Jacques Kallis often appreciably sharper than any member of England’s attack. Tactically, Smith was prepared to make more of the running than England skipper Andrew Strauss, who also had a poor series with the bat. Strauss’s policy of trying to frustrate batsmen into error for the most part was rendered ineffective by a South Africa top order who weren’t prepared to give their wickets away.

AFTERMATH
India after Dravid, Laxman MANOJ VATSYAYANA HYDERABAD: India were gearing for life without retired batting stars Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman as they begin a two-Test series against New Zealand in Hyderabad on Thursday. Dravid bid farewell in March and Laxman called it quits last Saturday, leaving Sachin Tendulkar the only surviving veteran of the golden generation of Indian batsman that included Sourav Ganguly. The main task for India in the busy home season that also features four Tests each against England and Australia is to find replacements for Dravid and Laxman, who had a combined tally of 22,069 Test runs in 298 matches. The batsmen in contention for the two vacant slots, Cheteshwar Pujara, Suresh Raina and Subramaniam
Badrinath, have a combined tally of just 20 Tests. Ajinkya Rahane has yet to debut in the five-day game. India will also miss Dravid and Laxman in the slips. Both were gifted with safe hands with Dravid taking a Test record 210 catches and Laxman
135. “It will be tough to replace Rahul and Laxman not only as batsmen, but also as slip catchers,” Tendulkar said. “They were great in that region and to replace them we are going to need someone to be there for an equally long period of time.”

Wozniacki, seeded third in a field headed by Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska, needed an hour and 21 minutes to book a second-round clash with Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Melanie Oudin of US. A fifth successive title in the hardcourt tune-up for the US Open would put former world number one Wozniacki in elite company. Robin van Persie suffered a losing start to his Manchester United career as Marouane Fellaini gave Everton a surprise 1-0 win when he socred a goal in the 14th minute of the match at Goodison Park NEIL JOHNSTON LIVERPOOL: Robin van Persie suffered a losing start to his Manchester United career as Marouane Fellaini gave Everton a surprise 1-0 win at Goodison Park on Monday. Van Persie, who joined United from Arsenal for £24 million last week, was forced to watch the opening 68 minutes from the substitutes bench before coming on 11 minutes after Fellaini’s goal. But the Dutch forward was unable to inspire a United comeback and Everton deservedly chalked up a fine win in their first match of the Premier League season. Belgium international Fellaini had already been denied by the woodwork before heading the winner, while Everton midfielder Leon Osman hit the cross-
bar as David Moyes’ side dominated a toothless United from start to finish. Van Persie’s decision to snub champions Manchester City in favour of a move to United has renewed optimism at Old Trafford that they can wrestle the title back from their local rivals this season. But Ferguson’s team will need to improve on this erratic display if they are to win a 20th English league crown. Although Van Persie started his United career on the bench due to a lack of match sharpness, there was one new face in United’s line-up in the shape of Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa, the £12 million signing from Borussia Dortmund. Kagawa was impressive at time, but it was Nani who went closest to opening the scoring for the visitors, the Portuguese flash-

ing a long-range effort narrowly wide in the 23rd minute, before Wayne Rooney was denied by Tim Howard’s outstretched hand
from a free-kick six minutes later. However this was anything but one-way traffic. Everton, partly responsible
for United’s title downfall last season after coming from 4-2 down to draw 4-4 at Old Trafford in April, caused Ferguson’s make-shift defence all kinds of problems before half-time. With Rio Ferdinand out with a groin injury, Michael Carrick stood in at centre-back alongside the returning Nemanja Vidic, back in the team after a longterm cruciate knee ligament injury. But the ease in which Fellaini glided past the England international before striking the woodwork in the 14th minute made uncomfortable viewing for Ferguson. In addition, United keeper David de Gea made four excellent stops to deny Steven Pienaar twice before half-time, while Leon Osman and Leighton Baines also suffered frustration at the hands of the Spanish keeper. Van Persie made his eagerly-anticipated United debut as a 68th minute substitute with his new side trailing to Marouane Fellaini’s second half goal at Goodison Park on Monday. But the Dutch striker, who completed a £24 million move from Arsenal last Friday, was unable to inspire Ferguson’s team, who lost their opening game of the Premier League season for the first time since 2004. “We played around him too much, we didn’t show enough penetration and with Robin in your team you know you want to use his ability against centrebacks in situations he is very good at. But we didn’t use him
LONDON: Eden Hazard insists there is more to come after his sparkling Premier League debut - but is adamant he has no concerns about handling the physical nature of English football. The Chelsea playmaker, 21, wasted no time making his mark following his £32 million summer move from Lille, setting up two goals inside seven minutes of his side’s league opener at Wigan. Hazard’s contribution ensured Roberto Di Matteo’s side got off to a winning start and they will attempt to build on that success when Reading visit Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. His eye-catching efforts also made him the target for some heavy challenges, but the Belgium international was quick to dismiss the attention he received.
enough,” Ferguson said. Ferguson explained his decision to start van Persie on the substitutes bench by insisting the striker hadn’t played enough during pre-season. “He’s not played any football, given the expectation of him playing at any given
moment, it was better for him to start on the substitutes’ bench,” he said. “He’s a great player and there is always the temptation to play him when you have a player like that. But the sensible route is to start him on the bench.” United were lacklustre for long spells and it required a string of fine stops by Spanish keeper David De Gea to prevent Everton from winning by a bigger margin. Midfielder Leon Osman was outstanding for the hosts, but Ferguson admitted his players failed to handle goalscorer Fellaini. “He is a handful, he is a big, tall, gangly lad and they just lumped the ball forward to him, that’s all they did,” he added. “They worked from that base all the time and they got a goal from him, so it’s justified.” NJ
