ndie films in Telugu are a rare commodity, although few people had made an earnest
attempt to bring alive their vision on to the big screen in the past. Now, a new production house Telugu Indepedent cinema (TIC), comprising film enthusiasts and film aspirants has come up with a 30 minute long short film titled Edari Varsham – The Desert Rain. Based on Devarakonda Balagangadhar Tilak’s Telugu short story
Oori Chivara Illu, the short film, starring Raghu Kunche and Swapna, has been directed by Kathi Mahesh Kumar. “ Nobody is out here to compete with mainstream cinema. Even if we think, we can’t. All we aspire is to create a window of opportunity of our own for our own kind,” says Mahesh Kumar. TIC began as a
Facebook group and a year later, when Mahesh and couple of his friends wanted to make a short film, the entire group supported him open-heartedly. “As a co-operative production house, we decided to pool in resources. People invested anywhere between `1000 to `40,000 and we raised about `2.5 lakhs,”
Mahesh adds. TIC believes in collaboration between film enthusiasts. Right from scripting to production, everything was done with the help of the members of the community. Edari Varsham is going to be screened at Prasad Labs today at 6 PM and it’ll be screened at several film festivals.

The lack of fast and reliable information and rescue system has been blamed for a spate of accidents on this stretch of road in the recent past. The Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has, in a meeting with the HMDA authorities, asked the officials to see that a proper system was in place. The system may cost `100 Crore, it was learnt. village which has huge apartments, high-end row houses, gated communities and duplex apartments — this is Manikonda, which until 10 years back was just agricultural land. It has now become the most sought-after destination not just for software professionals, but for film stars as well. Manikonda is sandwiched between Gachibowli, Shaikpet and Film Nagar (Jubilee Hills). Amidst the unimaginable development lies Hyderabad's most prestigious and ambitious project — Lanco Hills. But Manikonda isn't just about Lanco Hills, there are other great residential projects which demand equal attention, if not more. Manikonda, over the next few years, will be the next Jubilee Hills, say realestate agents. But even in this scenario, property rates are low and rents even lower. Postnoon studies why Manikonda is (and was) in demand even when there was a lull in real-estate recently.
Why Manikonda Having lived in the locality for nearly two years, Pratyusha Sharma said that when she was looking for an apartment, she wanted an area which was surrounded by

greenery. “Manikonda fit the bill. It is a lush green area and despite being well connected, it is quiet and peaceful making it an ideal place to live in,” she said. “I work in Madhapur and Manikonda is well connected to it. In fact, most of the people who live here work in adjoining areas. Low rents are an added incentive,” said Promita Sen Gupta, a resident since two years.
Rental and Property Rates
International School of Hyderabad and Nasr School for Boys are located in adjoining areas,” pointed out Promita. “There are a lot of clinics here, but not too many hospitals. Having said that, Gachibowli and Shaikpet has good hospitals in their vicinity,” says Pratyusha. Echoes Jagna, “There is no hospital that is big enough to handle emergency cases. In such an event, you have to drive to the hospital in neighbouring areas.”
Owner of an apartment complex, Jagna Reddy, rents out a two-bedroom apartment for Rs. 6,000 and three-bedroom apartment for Rs. 8,000. The same trend runs through the area. If you choose to buy the apartment instead, the asking rate is anywhere between Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 2,500 per square foot. Buying a plot too, is fairly affordable at Rs. 17,000 a square yard. “Because of Lanco Hills, the property rates have gone up. Despite that, it is still extremely affordable. This area will develop even more. It is perfect for investing,” said Jagna.

City is about 12 kilometres away. There aren't any metered autorickshaws either. “People who live here have their own transport. There is a need for more buses to ensure better connectivity,” says Pratyusha. On the other hand, driving through the road that leads to Manikonda from OU colony, Gachibowli, is like being on a roller-coaster ride, but the road that connects from Lanco Hills is much better.
Water and Electricity Water is in abundance here because not only does Manikonda have good borewell supply, but also 24 hours Manjeera (government) water supply. “Electricity isn't a problem either apart from the regular hour-long power-cuts. I use my washing machine, dish washer and have a bath in a tub, without the fear of water running out,” says Promita.
Do you like it here? “This is the area to be. There is greenery, open spaces, less pollution and all the amenities that I need,” says Pratyusha who is content living in Manikonda. “I have lived here since childhood and have seen the area grow. It is a great place to invest especially for its location,” said Jagna, all too happy to be a resident of one of the fastest developing areas in the city.

Road rage: Pereira gets jail
on Friday said that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s Sadbhavna mission fast at Godhra “lacked sincerity of purpose” and wondered if he was expiating for the 2002 communal riots in the state. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi accused Modi of speaking with “a forked tongue” and trying to gain cheap political mileage. “Is he by any chance expiating for the sins of his government during whose tenure over 2,000 lost their lives? Is he expiating for the fact that prosecutions and actions taken were not impartial and objective and therefore, hundreds of cases were transferred out of Gujarat by the Hon’ble
Supreme Court? So the moment he clarifies, we will be able to comment,” Singhvi said. He said Modi’s “so-called fast” lacked “sincerity of purpose”. “So long as he does not have sincerity of purpose, it is no point practicing political drama because you cannot fool even some of the people some of the times,” Singhvi said. Modi staged a daylong hunger strike as part of his ‘Sadbhavna’ fast in Godhra and said his state had shown that the politics of development can work. MUMBAI: A week after the Supreme Court axed his bail in a 2006 Mumbai hit-and-run case, 25-year-old Alistair Pereira was on Friday sent to jail after he surrendered in a sessions court here, police said. Pereira first gave himself up at the Khar Road Police station in northwest Mumbai. “The sessions court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Pereira last evening. He surrendered this morning,” Senior Inspector Mangesh Pote said. Pereira was then taken to the Sewri Sessions Court. “After the formalities were completed, he was sent to Arthur Road Jail,” Pote said. On January 12, over five years after Pereira, under the influence of alcohol, ran over 15 labourers sleeping on a Mumbai pavement killing seven of them, the SC upheld a Bombay High Court verdict awarding him a three-year jail sentence.According to the Supreme Court, Pereira, who has only served one month in jail, will now have to serve three years of imprisonment for the offence. Writers outraged as Rushdie cancels visit
JAIPUR: Outrage and resentment were the dominant emotions on the first day of the Jaipur Literature Festival here on Friday as writers, intellectuals and fans cried foul over Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie calling off his visit in view of threat to his life following protests by Islamic groups opposed to his visit. A Pakistan-based writer Mohammed Hanif, the author of The Case of Exploding Mangoes and The Lady of Alice Bhatti, said
the “controversy over the The Satanic Verses has been blown out of proportion and it should not have happened”. Addressing the media, writer William Dalrymple said “the whole episode was the result of Chinese whispers.” “At least 262 authors are here to enjoy. Salman is a writer of enormous depth. It is a great tragedy that he is not here,” Dalrymple said as writer Namita Gokhale said she was “personally very disappointed that Salman Rushdie was not
coming”. “I hope and believe that we will have him here another year,” Gokhale said.
Eminent poet and lyricist Gulzar, who was at the festival, said, “It is wrong to muzzle free speech”. “Whoever is responsible for this politics will pay. I regret that Rushdie could not come to the festival,” the lyricist said. Novelist and playwright Kiran Nagarkar, who has also faced political gag for his play The Bedtime Story, lamented “the constraints on the freedom of speech in a democracy”. “I know the feeling,” the writer said. Bomb attacks in Nigeria kill 8
GLOBE AT A GLANCE China makes its own magnetic train
KANO: Series of coordinated bomb attacks targeting security forces and gunfire in Nigeria’s second-largest city on Friday killed at least eight people, including a suicide bomber at a police office. The city of Kano, the largest in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north, erupted in chaos, with some 20 explosions heard and gunfire ringing out as eight police and immigration offices or residences were targeted. It was not immediately clear who was behind the violence, though previous such attacks in Nigeria’s north have been blamed on Islamist group Boko Haram. Police confirmed eight areas had been targeted, including state police headquarters and a regional police base.

Online piracy bills put on hold WASHINGTON: The US congressional leaders put anti-online piracy legislation on hold on Friday following a wave of protests led by Google and Wikipedia denouncing the bills as a threat to Internet freedom. Senate majority leader Harry Reid said he was delaying next week’s vote on the Protect IP Act (PIPA) and House Judiciary Committee chairman Lamar Smith said he would “revisit” the House version, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). “In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday’s vote on the Protect IP Act,” Reid announced in a statement two days after a wave of online protests
against the bill swept the Internet. “There is no reason that the legitimate issues raised by many about this bill cannot be resolved,” the Democrat from Nevada added. “I am optimistic that we can reach a compromise in the coming weeks.” Smith, a Republican from Texas, said he would post-
pone consideration of the House bill in committee “until there is wider agreement on a solution.” “I have heard from the critics and I take seriously their concerns regarding proposed legislation to address the problem of online piracy,” Smith said. “It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products,” he said. The announcements by Reid and Smith came amid eroding congressional support for the bills intended to crack down on online piracy of movies and music and the sale of counterfeit goods.
casualties. Police spokesmen gave varying explanations of whether the statement meant seven were killed or if some were wounded. The shocking attacks, with Kano having escaped the worst of the violence blamed on Boko Haram in recent months, left residents fleeing neighbourhoods and fearing what would come next. Those killed included a local journalist, three police officers, three immigration officers and a suicide bomber, various sources said. The state government imposed a 24-hour curfew until further notice. “We have lost three of our men in the attack,” said local immigration spokesman Mohammed Kanoma. AFP

Editorials INDIAN EMBASSY found wanting

hen Costa Concordia ran aground off the Italian coast a week back, several Indian members of the crew informed their relatives about the situation and asked them to keep in touch with the Indian embassy for updates. However, the embassy did not act or provide any help for two days due to — holidays! A Hyderabadi chef of Concordia, who returned home on Thursday said embassies of all other countries were in touch except that of India. While embassies of other countries move heaven and earth to protect the interests of their citizens, Indian missions abroad have gained infamy for inaction or acting too late. Thousands of Indian workers languish in West Asian prisons, most of them trapped in false cases by their employers who do not want to pay them wages or arrears. Embassies and diplomatic corps need to buck up and get their act together. The country is not spending its taxpayers’ money to send the boys in suits for paid vacations abroad.

or the past few days, little else has been said and heard on news channels and in literary circles other than the impending arrival of Salman Rushdie. First, it was a matter of national pride. The Jaipur Literary Festival (JLF) has been steadily growing in number and repute as Asia’s largest literary festival and Rushdie’s presence at the fifth edition would have undoubtedly been an invaluable addition. But as with any remotely controversial issue from the past, the more momentum the news gained, the more protesters it did too. As the face behind the protests, Islamic cleric Maulana Abul Qasim Noman strongly objected to the visit and demanded that the writer be denied a visa for not having apologised for Satanic Verses, which he claimed had “hurt the sentiments of Muslims all over the world.” Not surprisingly, several other Muslim organisations quickly followed suit and remembered their grudge against the writer. One even offered a reward for anyone who could hit Rushdie with a shoe. And so it grew steadily in the past month until finally, in a statement read out on Friday by JLF producer Sanjoy Roy, Rushdie expressed that he was withdrawing from the festival. It read, “I have now been informed by intelligence sources in Maharashtra and Rajasthan that paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to eliminate me, while I have some doubts as to the accuracy of this intelligence, it would be irresponsible of me to come to the festival in such circumstances. It would be irresponsible to my family, to the festival audience and to my fellow writers…to come to the festival in these circumstances.” Needless to say, while some sections remained appeased, for the most part, it was outrage and shame that was the prevailing sentiment. The issue everyone agreed was much larger than the fact that few protesters (or defenders for that matter) even knew their

I am really happy to see Jonathan Paturi safe. The Costa Concordia’s sinking was a real shocker. After Titanic and its sad end, one would expect people to be careful with such things. But no. People need repeated warnings to show them the truth. The captain’s statement that he tripped and fell into the lifeboat is so not believeable. India should learn a lesson from this incident. Our boys in the navy sometimes have to go through near-death experiences while partolling the seas and any death on sea is brushed off under the carpet.
I have just returned to Hyderabad after staying for six years in Mumbai. I am frankly very surprised and pleasantly relieved that we finally have a newspaper that caters to the needs of the locals. But that said, I would also like to see a page or two dedicated to national news so that Postnoon becomes a comprehensive offering. After all it is important to stay in touch with national news as well from time to time. I hope you will take my suggestion into consideration.

subject matter, or what exactly it was in Satanic Verses that supposedly offended them. No, that debate — freedom of expression versus hurt sentiment — will continue. This was a matter of being let down, yet again, by a government that happily agrees to be held to ransom every time someone who is anyone decides to delay their meal by an hour. And will throw up its hands about anything that is, or has the potential to be, remotely adverse to populist sentiment. Rushdie is not here at the Jaipur festival not merely because of the threat of violence. His invitation to the festival stood, despite the protests. In that, the organisers showed more spine that the entity you expect it from — the government. Readings of the banned book were held in sessions across the festival as an angry reaction to the shameful episode. In

that too, they were more courageous. The government meanwhile has been busy drafting statements to say this — that it had naught the wherewithal to protect one man (with a democratic right to enter this country) for two days. It cowered and reacted reluctantly, timidly and spinelessly. Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, for instance, muttered incomprehensibly about “security problems,” and as good as admitted that they won’t step in, should something untoward happen. It went on to prove what we already know — the louder the voices of dissent, the quieter the government remains. The Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband on Friday dubbed Rushdie’s cancellation of his visit to India as a “victory of democracy.” But what it really is, is the shameless defeat of the people we nominated and elected to rule this democracy.
Marriage is sacred
New dreams for old city
I am a 27 year old unmarried girl, living and working in Hyderabad. I read the column All About Eve and I sort of can associate with what was mentioned in the column. No matter how much we think of ourselves as a forward thinking nation, our habits may change but our mentalities won’t. As women, we are made to fight our own battles. In my opinion, a woman should only get married when she feels the need to. A marriage is a sacred contract and should only be stepped into when one is sure of it.
A big budget allocation to give a much-needed facelift to the real face of the city, old city, comes as a ray of hope for dwellers in this part of Hyderabad. This is not the first time that the old city is being promised with the moon. Corruption has no face and can dawn anyone’s. Hope this does not show up again and they don’t deny us our due this time round. For, only good execution can bear fruit and alleviate the residents of the old city of their miseries.

hen a boy leaves home in pursuit of adventure and carefree living, he is not only inviting untold miseries, he is also exposing himself to the rough and tumble the outside world will relentlessly put him through — quite the opposite of the protective upbringing of the home. If the boy is an 11-year-old, very obviously, consequences of this quest for freedom do not strike the mind. Core values engrained during his brief stay at home do stand in good stead but may not be enough to withstand the world’s harsh reality. While the first week or so goes by relishing newfound independence, continuous exposure to outdoor weather and expenses take their toll. Whichever of the two may have been the stronger reason, he is forced to write to home to be picked up from the streets of his adopted city, Hyderabad. But as fate would have it, he gets the address of his home wrong, even if by a single digit. When fate wears the garb of a neighbour, and a postman of all things, who does not show enough responsibility to reach a letter to its valid address 10 houses away, you know it is working against you. Not hearing from his parents, as he did, the little boy understood it as doors of his home shut on him for life. He had to fend for himself. Time healed the illeffects of living on the streets and a job in an Irani restaurant earned him a living. Days go by; six months at that, until the very same fate, did a turnabout, coming as it did, this time around in the form of an angel. Gouse Mohiuddin Saba, who worked in an office across the road and who frequented the restaurant often, took a liking for the boy who earnestly served him. He was convinced from the minute he saw the boy that he did not belong where he was. Glimpses of the convent education probably showed through even from under a borrowed identity. When during one of his visits, Samaritan Saba did not see the boy around, he asked after him, only to be told the boy was sick. His interest in the boy did not stop at just enquiring of his wellbeing. He climbed up to the attic, where he was told the boy was resting, and discovered that the boy was running a high temperature and looked malnourished. The sight moved him immensely. He took the boy home, showing him to a doctor en route. While he was happy to have another son, he knew that somewhere there was another man grieving the loss of one. So he took it upon himself to find out the true identity of the elf, who he realised had heaped untold misery on his biological father and the rest of the family. What he did not account for was the challenge that getting the truth out of the boy was going to be — him working with the CBI notwithstanding. He succeeded in his endeavour, even if it took him longer than getting confessions out of hardened criminals in his office did. The confession was extracted discreetly; what if he were to vanish from this house too, out of fear of being tracked by his family, a possibility after he had blurted out the truth. The boy only realised he had spilled the beans when one fine day he saw his dad walk into his new home. Joy quickly replaced apprehension when his father embraced him. Let’s all be compassionate like GM Saba. There are many boys and for that matter, even girls languishing out there in this very difficult world for want of a guardian. The little boy he picked up from the streets and induced new life into could well have grown up into anyone of us — maybe me!

TDP’s first family up in arms against each other Polytricks A Saye Sekhar
M
embers of the first family in the Telugu Desam Party are once again crossing swords. But none of the party members dares take sides. Chandrababu Naidu, the boss, is, of late, cut up with his maverick brotherin-law Harikrishna and his actor-son Jr NTR, who is also called as ‘young tiger’ by his fans. Naidu and Harikrishna enjoy a perennial love-hate relationship, thanks to the antics and angularities of each other towards each other. Naidu dumped Harikrishna — not once, but time and again. Harikrishna’s son, Jr NTR, who was meted out many a humiliation in the patriarch’s family on more than one occasion, was roped in to the party activity in 2009. Chandrababu Naidu, for whom filmy firmament is the in-laws’ house, literally and figuratively, always rubbed shoulders with film personalities. He marshalled the kinematic strengths of his brother-in-law Balakrishna and Jr NTR and fielded them only for the party campaign without offering them any political
position. The gullible duo toed the line of the Machiavellian politician Naidu. People still remember Jr NTR’s articulation, diction, knowledge of popular grievances and his spellbinding speeches. In fact, Jr NTR shone in contrast on all these counts compared to Balakrishna and Naidu. The engagement of Jr NTR with Lakshmi Pranathi, daughter of Chandrababu Naidu’s niece, gave an impression to the people that the bondage among the families is cemented once and for all. But the relations between Naidu and NTR Jr
apparently strained by the time of the marriage. The TV channel, owned by Jr NTR’s father-in-law Narne Srinivasa Rao, used to be managed by Nara Lokesh, the only son of Chandrababu Naidu. But a few months ago, Srinivasa Rao took over the reins of the channel himself, obviously to eject Lokesh out of it. Harikrishna did not like the surreptitious projection of Lokesh as the heir apparent. He wants Jr NTR to succeed Naidu in the party. However, It is not known whether Jr NTR is nursing political ambitions immediately or at least in 2014. Considering the manoeuvring abilities of Naidu, one shouldn’t be taken by surprise even if he manages to rope in Harikrishna and Jr NTR into his party fold using symbiotic relationship of one uncle or an aunt to buttress the young tiger’s support by election time. For, if the TDP doesn’t come to power in 2014, it will be relegated to the Opposition permanently akin to the Communists. To be on the safe side, Naidu is grooming his younger brother Ramamurthy Naidu’s elder son Rohit as an actor for pitting him as a star campaigner on behalf of his party, and younger son Gireesh as a political heir-apparent to regain the stranglehold over Chandragiri Assembly constituency.

The best of GM
Leaner, meaner GM back on top Laure Fillon
PARIS: General Motors reclaimed its title as the world's biggest automaker, successfully emerging from its 2009 bankruptcy woes to overtake German giant Volkswagen and Japanese Toyota in the race to the top. The US giant sold 9.03 million vehicles globally in 2011, up 7.6 per cent from a year ago, as it cashed in on a recovery in the north American market which delivered a 11.4 per cent sales jump to 2.9 million. The carmaker also posted strong results elsewhere, with European sales up 4.4 per cent and 3.9 per cent in South America. Its best-selling marque Chevrolet posted record sales of 4.75 million units, making up almost half of the global total. The results marked GM's sharp U-turn from near demise in 2008, when the global financial crisis forced it to turn to the US government for a bailout. In June 2009, it filed for bankruptcy which allowed it to change labour contracts and dump brands, dealers, workers and plants in the process. It emerged from bankruptcy much leaner and more focused, and in November returned to the stock exchange in a share offer-
ing that raised a massive $23.1 billion, helping it to pay back half of its government debt. As GM's fate began to change for the better, its Japanese rival Toyota, which had roared ahead during GM's difficult years to take top spot among the world's biggest automakers, began to see woes piling up. In the last two years, the Japanese giant suffered the double whammy of massive vehicle recalls and then last March's devastating earthquake and tsunami in its home country. Reputed for its well-made family sedans, Toyota's reputation took a dent in 2010 when it was forced to recall more than nine
million cars in the world, over diverse technical problems, including defective braking systems. The year 2011 brought an earthquake and tsunami in Japan that badly hindered production for several months in the archipelago and abroad. Floods in Thailand at year-end added to its problems, as factories in its key southeast Asian manufacturing base were disrupted. As a result, its 2011 sales fell to 7.0 million units, down 6.0 per cent, according to provisional data released at the end of December.
Carmaker’s bestselling marque Chevrolet posted record sales of 4.75 million units, making up almost half of the global total
If confirmed, the firm would be relegated to third place, behind Volkswagen. The German giant which owns brands including Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini has said it sold 8.15 million vehicles during the year, up 14 per cent from 2010. It is aiming to become the biggest automaker by 2018. But Toyota, which also owns the luxury brand Lexus, is planning to give both its rivals a run for their money, with sales targets of 8.488 million vehicles in 2012 and 9.0 million by 2013.

A message from the ‘Pirates’ O
Troops mass on digital battlefield Chris Lefkow
WASHINGTON: US congressional support for legislation targeting online piracy was eroding on Wednesday as Wikipedia and Google led an online onslaught and branded the bills a danger to Internet freedom. Hundreds of other websites joined the Web titans in denouncing the bills introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate aimed at cracking down on online piracy and the sale of counterfeit goods. Wikipedia shut down the English-language version of its online encyclopedia for 24 hours to protest the legislation — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate. Blogging platform WordPress.com covered its home page with black banners with the word “censored” and Wired.com blacked out its headlines. Other Web giants such as Twitter, Facebook and Craigslist declined to shut down but voiced concern about the bills. Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey urged his 1.8 million followers to tweet, email and call to “tell Congress NO.” Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said the social network will “oppose any laws that will hurt the Internet.” Chris Dodd, head of the Motion Picture Association of America, condemned the online blackout by certain sites as an “irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information and use their services.” “A so-called ‘blackout’ is yet
What are SOPA and PIPA?
S
OPA (the ‘Stop Online Piracy Act’) and PIPA (the ‘Protect Intellectual Property Act’) are bills in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate, respectively. These bills are presented as efforts to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign websites, but they do so in a way that would disrupt free expression and harm the Internet. Detailed information about these bills can be found in the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act articles on Wikipedia (which remained available during the blackout). GovTrack lets you follow both bills through the legislative process. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organisation that advocates for the public interest in the digital realm, has summarised the flaws in these bills, and the threats to an open, secure, and free Internet. another gimmick, albeit a dangerous one, designed to punish elected and administration officials who are working diligently to protect American jobs from foreign criminals,” he said. “Right now, the US Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet,” Wikipedia said in a message at its darkened website. “To raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia.” Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a PIPA co-sponsor, said he was withdrawing his support and several other lawmakers distanced themselves from the legislation, including influential Republican Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah. “Congress should listen and avoid rushing through a bill that could have many unintended consequences,” Rubio said. “After listening to concerns on both sides of the debate over #PIPA, it is simply not ready for prime time,” Hatch said on Twitter. The controversy has pitted Hollywood against Silicon Valley, forcing members of
Congress to try to walk a fine line between two powerful forces, and led to an unprecedented outpouring of coordinated protest on the Web. The Senate is to examine its bill next week. The White House spokesman Jay Carney said the problem of online piracy needs to be tackled but “in a way which does not impinge upon a free and open Internet.” The White House said two petitions opposing the bills had drawn over 100,000 signatures. The draft legislation has won the backing of Hollywood, the music industry, entertainment giants like Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. the National Association of Manufacturers, the US Chamber of Commerce and others. But the bills have come under fire from online companies and digital rights groups for allegedly paving the way for US authorities to shut down websites accused of online piracy, including foreign sites, without due process. ver a century ago Thomas Edison got the patent for a device which would “do for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear”. He called it the Kinetoscope. He was not only amongst the first to record video, he was also the first person to own the copyright to a motion picture. Because of Edison’s patents for the motion pictures it was close to financially impossible to create motion pictures on the North American East coast. The movie studios therefore relocated to California, and founded what we today call Hollywood. The reason was mostly because there was no patent. There was also no copyright to speak of, so the studios could copy old stories and make movies out of them — like Fantasia, one of Disney’s biggest hits ever. So, the whole basis of this industry, that today is screaming about losing control over immaterial rights, is that they circumvented immaterial rights. They copied (or put in their terminology: “stole”) other people’s creative works, without paying for it. They did it in order to make a huge profit. Today, they’re all successful and most of the studios are on the Fortune 500 list of the richest companies in the world. Congratulations — it’s all based on being able to re-use other peoples creative works. And today they hold the rights to what other people create. If you want to get something released, you have to abide to their rules. The ones they created after circumventing other people’s rules. The reason they are always complaining about ‘pirates’ today is simple. We’ve done what they did. We circumvented the rules they created and created our own. We crushed their monopoly by giving people something more efficient. We allow people to have direct communication between each other, circumventing the profitable middle man, that in some cases takes over 107 per cent of the profits (yes, you pay to work for them). It’s all based on the fact that we’re competition. We’ve proven that their existence in their current form is no longer needed. We’re just better than they are. And the funny part is that our rules are very similar to the founding ideas of the USA. We fight for freedom of speech. We see all people as equal. We believe that the public, not the elite, should rule the nation. We believe that laws should be created to serve the public, not the rich corporations. The Pirate Bay (TPB) is truly an international community. The team is spread all over the globe — but we’ve stayed out of the USA. We have Swedish roots and a Swedish friend said this: The word SOPA means ‘trash’ in Swedish. The word PIPA means ‘a pipe’ in Swedish. This is of course not a coincidence. They want to make the Internet a one-way pipe, with them at the top, shoving trash through the pipe down to the rest of us obedient consumers. The public opinion on this matter is clear. Ask anyone on the street and you’ll learn that no one wants to be fed with trash. Why the US government wants the American people to be fed with trash is beyond our imagination but we hope that you will stop them, before we all drown. SOPA can’t do anything to stop TPB. Worst case we’ll change top level domain from our current .org to one of the hundreds of other names that we already also use. In countries where TPB is blocked, China and Saudi Arabia springs to mind, they block hundreds of our domain names. And did it work? Not really. To fix the ‘problem of piracy’ one should go to the source of the problem. The entertainment industry says they’re creating “culture” but what they really do is stuff like selling overpriced dolls and making 11-year-old girls anorexic. Either from working in the factories that creates the dolls for basically no salary or by watching movies and TV shows that make them think that they’re fat. In the great Sid Meier’s computer game Civilization you can build Wonders of the world. One of the most powerful ones is Hollywood. With that you control all culture and media in the world. Rupert Murdoch was happy with MySpace and had no problems with their own piracy until it failed. Now he’s complaining that Google is the biggest source of piracy in the world — because he’s jealous. He wants to retain his mind control over people and clearly you’d get a more honest view of things on Wikipedia and Google than on Fox News.

THE PERFECT PET!
AND THE
TOBY
OSCAR GOES TO... Rory Mulholland
PARIS: A growing pack of fans is howling for Uggie the terrier to get a sniff at the Oscars after the Jack Russell stole the show in the silent movie The Artist that scooped a slew of Golden Globe awards. The nine-year-old mutt last year took the unofficial Palm Dog prize at Cannes for his role in the Frenchdirected movie that won best musical/comedy, best musical/comedy actor and best musical score in Sunday’s Golden Globes. It is time, say his many supporters across the world, for animals like Uggie, who was heading for a grim fate in an animal shelter before his trainer saved him, to be eligible for an Oscar. Steven Spielberg has joined the campaign, even if his hopes are more equine than canine as he has his sights on a gong for the role of Joey, an English horse caught up in the horrors of battle in his latest movie War Horse. Consider Uggie is the name of the Facebook and Twitter campaign for an Oscar nomination for the dog so he can take his place among the two-legged acting fraternity at the January 24 Oscar awards in Los Angeles. Uggie, who previously starred in Water for Elephants “ and Mr Fix It, made no comment when he joined The Artist director Michel Hazanavicius on the stage to pick up the prizes at the Globes ceremony in Los Angeles. Billed as a tribute to the silent movie era, the blackand-white film tells the story of silent star George Valentin (played by French actor Jean Dujardin) whose career is torpedoed by the arrival of the talkies. The film is tipped to scoop the best picture award
at the Oscars. Uggie has no chance to display his vocal range in the silent film, but he does get to show off his ability to play dead, walk on his hind legs and bury his head in his paws. He even saves George Valentin from a burning house. The Californian-born terrier’s skateboarding and waterskiing abilities can be seen on Internet videos. The BBC interviewed him when he visited Britain last week on a promotional tour but he responded only with a bark when asked if he thought that what he was doing was really acting. His trainer, however, told the broadcaster that claims that his dog was only doing it for sausages were false. “He is a real actor, I don’t care what anybody says. He deserves an Oscar more than anybody I know,” said Oscar Von Muller. Toby Rose, the organiser of the annual Palm Dog prize at the Cannes film festival, denounced what he called the ‘outrageous dogism’ that was stopping Uggie from getting a shot at the Oscars. He noted that “the homeland of this Gallic production has recognised the plucky pooch in the French equivalent of the Golden Globes, the Lumieres.” There are of course some dissenting voices. “Giving Oscars to animals is a beastly idea,” was the headline on Monday of a tongue-in-cheek editorial in Britain’s The Independent newspaper. “The Oscar recipient is supposed to sob while delivering a rambling homily to all the wonderful people who helped them to stardom. Until animals can show they can master that key skill, the case for animal Oscars cannot be said to be proven,” it said.

t’s an open question whether a two-year-old golden retriever could really know the Heimlich manoeuvre, but there’s no doubt that Toby saved owner Debby Parkhurst from choking. According to Emily Brand, of the ASPCA, Parkhurst was eating an apple when a piece caught in her throat. Alone in the house, except for her two dogs, Parkhurst tried to self-administer the Heimlich manoeuvre by beating herself on the abdomen, but it wasn’t working. Then Toby sprang into action. He pushed her down on the kitchen floor and jumped on her chest. The apple popped out. The ASPCA named Toby their 2007 Dog of the Year.
VICTORY IN DHAKA
T
he Bangladeshi capital has ordered an end to the culling of dogs in the drive against rabies after complaints the animals were being cruelly beaten to death, an official said on Thursday. The Dhaka City Corporation previously had responsibility for conducting mass extermination drives to protect the city’s 15-million strong human population, with up to 20,000 dogs killed a year. “It is inhumane and ineffective,” local government secretary Abu Alam Shahid Khan told AFP, saying the ban had begun on January 1. “For decades tens of thousands of dogs were put to death unnecessarily and brutally.” The ban is a victory for the small but vocal animal rights movement in Bangladesh and campaigners who say sterilisation are a better way of combating strays.

T
he Aidi is a Moroccan dog breed used as a flock guard, protecting herds of sheep and goats. It also possesses hunting capabilities and good scenting ability. Although the Aidi has been used primarily as a working dog, he has become more common as a house dog in the country. This breed also makes a good urban pet if he is given tasks and exercise enough to keep him satisfied and happy. The Aidi is energetic and highly protective and is said to make an outstanding watchdog. It is a powerful dog that is also agile, alert, and ready for action. As a sensitive breed, the dog should receive kind yet firm training.

The Circus is in town Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus is an engrossing tale of magic and forbidden love beautifully interwoven into the fabric of LeCirque des Rêves Padmini C padmini.c@postnoon.com
O
ver the years, it's become tough, if not impossible to say the word ‘magic’ without thinking Harry Potter and what the series did for the literary universe. It explains perhaps the incredible buzz that accompanied Eric Morgenstern's debut novel Night Circus — a story cantered on the rivalry and love between two young magicians when it was announced last year. Upon its arrival in September, Doubleday ran an initial print of an incredible 175,000 copies and even before the book hit the
stands, Summit Entertainment (also the makers of the Twilight series) purchased the film rights. Not surprisingly, it went straight to the New York Times Bestseller list and stayed put. “I was reading Stephen King at age 12 and JK Rowling at age 21. This speaks volumes about my literary development... I write fantastical, fairy tale-esque things with magic and mystery and tea. My fiction tends to be location-driven. Nocturnal circuses, subterranean libraries, townhouses dressed up as pirate ships... I got tired of living in Alice’s Wonderland and decided to build some of my own,” writes Morgenstern in the way of an introduc-
tion, and it couldn't be more apt. Her wonderland is the travelling LeCirque des Rêves, the Circus of Dreams also known as the Night Circus — a veritable fantasia of black and white with 'countless tents of varying shapes and sizes,' performers, visitors, followers; cloud mazes, wish trees, ice gardens, pools of tears, with scents of caramel and lavender wafting by. But more importantly it is the chosen arena for a historic duel between two young magicians Celia and Marco, who have been trained for it since childhood and bound for life by their instructors who have been engaged in a profound rivalry spanning generations. The rules of the game are never explained to them but it soon becomes clear that only one can be left standing. But despite themselves, Celia and Marco fall irrevocably in love. However, the game must be played out and the fates of everyone in the circus now depend on them. Whether they can beat the odds and survive to be with each other forms the crux of the story. Night Circus makes a pleasurable read not because of the hype, but despite it. The non-linear progression of the storyline might put off some readers. But the lush evocative prose more than makes up for it. Similarly, the sentimental end is forgivable in lieu of the rest of the book. Bottom line? Read Night Circus not as the new Harry Potter or as a replacement for another young-adult fantasy. Read it for the book that it is and it might just surprise you. Devoted till the very bitter end Dean Williams
T
he Japanese seem to have a fetish for stories involving wives killing their husbands (former or current); maybe it’s a sociological shift, maybe it’s just plain good fiction sense; either way, it seems to work. The Devotion of Suspect X is not the usual tale that emerges from the Land of the Rising Sun. It is completely devoid of the atmosphere that hung low over the stories of Koji Suzuki, and there is a sense that one could be anywhere, rather than the teeming, neon-lit streets of Tokyo. But it is this Spartan environment that allows Keigo Higashino the canvas on which to paint a tapestry so complex, yet so delicately woven, that it stands out as a paragon of simplistic genius. Yasuko and her daughter Misato live an anonymous life. Divorced from her violent husband, Yasuko works in a Bento shop whiling away the days, devoting them to her teenage daughter, and wondering why she turned to look behind at the moment life walked past her. Ishigami is a maths genius. Not that you could tell just by looking at him. His job teaching high school students is vapid; his dreams like crestfallen angels after Milton had his wicked way with them. But in Yasuko, his next door neighbour, he finds hope. Hope that by loving her from afar; devoting himself to a comfortable distance, she may see him, and one day love him. Failing which, his role as Ultimate Observer is enough to sustain his dim flame of existence. But when Yasuko’s ex-husband Togashi tracks her down in her apartment, things go horribly pear-shaped. An argument breaks out, which ends with
Yasuko looping an electrical cord around Togashi’s neck; squeezing the life force out of him. Stunned at her sudden act of violence, although in the defence of herself and her daughter, Yasuko begins to understand that this is a crime from which she cannot hide. Enter the genius of Ishigami. Realising what has happened, and sensing an opportunity to do something colossal for the woman he loves so deeply, Ishigami devises a plan that will absolve Yasuko of the crime, and even then, only if the police accuse her in the first place. The Devotion of Suspect X is a crime thriller that soars with intelligence. This isn’t Elmore Leonard or Dashiell Hammett, this is something far more subtle. There are no verbal sledgehammers here, nor are there images of disfigured corpses. What there is an intellectual tussle between the genius of Ishigami, the matchless intuition of Detective Kusanagi, and the supreme deductive powers of Ishigami’s old friend, the physicist Manabu Yukawa. Devotion is more than just a game of cat-and-mouse. It’s about love, sacrifice, and the perfect crime. The mental tussles between Ishigami and Yukawa sing paeans to the intellect of the author. Of course, being Japanese, the ending is brutal. Not in a blood-and-guts sort of way, but in a far more devastating wrench of the soul. And it is only after the book has ended does the feeling begin to creep in that one has just read something far more than a crime thriller. Something so much more. Step into Winnie’s world
A
lan Alexander Milne was born on 18 January 1882 to Vince Milne and Sarah Marie Milne. He did his schooling at Henley House School, a small public school run by his father, where one of his teachers was HG Wells. After graduating from Cambridge in 1903, AA Milne wrote humorous verses and whimsical essays for Punch and later became an assistant editor there. Milne published 18 plays and three novels including a detective novel. Milne hit gold with his two Pooh books about a boy named Christopher Robin named after his son, Christopher Robin Milne. The other characters were inspired from his son's stuffed animals, most notably the bear, Winnie-the-Pooh. Christopher Robin Milne's stuffed bear was originally called Edward, and was renamed Winnie-thePooh after a Canadian black bear
AA Milne created Christopher Robin, a boy with a golden heart and the one who is the self-designated king of 100 Acre Woods. Christopher Robin is everyone's best friend in the 100 Acre Wood, but he is the closest to Winnie-the-Pooh. He is great friends with all the other characters and he is always there to solve their problems.
Winnie-the-Pooh
named Winnie, which was a military mascot in World War I. EH Shepard, the Punch’s staff cartoonist, illustrated the original Pooh books, using his own son's teddy, Growler (‘a magnificent bear’), as the model. Other characters created by Milne are the bouncy Tigger and the gloomy Eeyore. AA Milne is the person
who created one of the greatest children's characters of alltime: Winnie the Pooh. For almost eight decades the animals at 100 Acres Woods have been giving millions of readers a reason to smile. As we celebrate his 130th birthday, we take a look back at the wonderful world of honey and bouncing tigers.
Winnie-the-Pooh as you would know is really a stuffed toy teddy bear that belonged to Christopher Robin Milne, but in the world created by AA Milne he is Christopher’s best friend. He lives on honey and loves his honey. Winnie-the-Pooh is a bear of very little brain, but his heart makes up for that.
Tigger Talk about bounce and Tigger will be there in a flash. He is the most exuberant fellow in all of 100 Acres. He is a bouncy, pouncy, flouncy and trouncy creature who is always looking to have fun no matter what the situation might be. A lover of Kanga’s malt extract, Tigger has made the sandy pit next to Kanga and Roo’s house his home.

Gulzar’s love for literature Gulzar has penned many beautiful lines in movies, and it was his love for literature that brought him to Hyderabad for the literary festival. Gulzar tells us how the changing facets of languages are not a bad deal after all Indira Atluri Indira.a@postnoon.com
H
e takes you by surprise when he asks the audience, “We have all learnt Shakespeare in school, but how many of us have learnt about Kalidas?” While the audience is visibly unsure of how to respond, he jokes, “Imagine all the British having learnt everything about Kalidas, but clueless about Shakespeare — how funny would that be?” Gulzar strongly believes that language should be respected. When asked how? He says, “Children should study in their mother tongue in their formative years. I believe that those who are
aware of their native language are able to learn languages better.” On the influences in language today, Gulzar believes that cultural influences in languages are good. “It is a good thing that languages are changing, but one must be able to understand what influence is and what distortion is. For example, the Deccan languages are made fun of in many Hindi movies. Mahmood became the symbol of the so-called 'funny Deccan traditions’, and I think that is distortion,” he explains. What about the trend of translating books into vernacular languages? Gulzar answers us in his signature humoristic style by
making allusions to a mistress to express the impossibility of a perfect translation. “Translation is like a mistress. If she is beautiful, she is not faithful. And if she is faithful, she is not beautiful.” He signs off with yet another humorous punch line to talk about how we, as a country, are lucky to be as multi-cultural. According to him, “AB Vajpayee said it right when he said, 'The British left India not because of any other reason, but because they could not anymore bear the massacre of the English language.” It is perhaps the right time then to focus on preserving native Indian languages, and borrowing only what is required.

admirers of Winnie-the-Pooh characters and he is an unbelievably loveable donkey who is dismally gloomy for almost eternity. His appearance is highlighted by a small light-pink bow on his tail. His biggest problem is when his tail falls off and that happens frequently. And this is where his friends help him the most and amongst all friends Christopher Robin is the one who mostly undertakes the job of fixing Eeyore’s tail.
Piglet Piglet, probably Pooh's best friend, is also quite close to Christopher Robin and is capable of showing braveness way beyond his diminutive frame of a timid pink pig. Piglet likes to wear a long striped shirt.
Kanga and Roo Kanga, is the only female character in all the books Milne has written. She is the sweet caring mother, who is ever ready to lend a helping hand and feed a hungry mouth. Roo is a joey and is a playful, curious, happy-go-lucky child who can be quite a handful at times.
Rabbit and Owl The characters, Rabbit and Owl, were based on animals that lived in the surrounding area of Milne's country home, Cotchford Farm in Ashdown Forest, Sussex. It is this area on which the 100 Acre Woods is based.

Exploring complexities
etting accolades from their peers on the professional front, partying hard, earning and spending the way they want to, answerable only to one person — yourself: That is today’s woman for you. Successful no doubt they are, but what about the emotional void that the singletons feel? Vidya Iyengar, 27, a supervising producer with UTV television has been single for almost two years now. She claims she wants to keep it that way for some time at least if not forever. “I have been an independent working professional and that is where my priority lies. Although there is parental pressure, I am pretty clear in my mind about relationships and marriage,” she says. Having been in and out of two relationships before, she has experienced things on both the sides of the fence. She does not hear the wedding bells anytime soon but the idea does not sound repulsive anymore. “Until last year, I was completely against marriage. I would not want to get tied down with the binds marriage brings along with it.
I am not ready to compromise on my career. ” Being single has its own benefits that she feels is good enough. Being your own boss for starters, is a bonus. But prod a bit more and deep down somewhere Vidya does feel that sometimes in life she won’t mind someone she can come back to and just hold hands. “Maybe it was my breakup along with my professional commitments as well that made me averse to relationships and marriage. But today I would like to come back home to a person who respects me for who I am and understands my profession. I would want to get married and be with that special someone but that is at least three years away,” she says. Sneha Sunder, a 24-yearold working professional who does believe in the institution of marriage feels independence and marriage are two different things and should not be looked at from the same perspective. “It all depends on what you want. I feel we are humans who want company at the end of the day and that can be in the form of a boyfriend or a soul
mate. I want to travel extensively, meet different people, explore the world and then after a few years I would love to get married.” she shares, adding, “I would like to have financial stability as well as prepare myself before marriage,” she says. Clinical psychologist Savita Date Menon feels that most single women try to keep marriage at bay for a while as they don’t want to get bound by domestic responsibilities when climbing the career ladder. “Nowadays girls worry less about the security that marriage brings as they are confident and independent enough to support themselves financially as well as emotionally. Also the line of the equals gets faded and if not the husband, in-laws might have certain expectations in our society,” she shares, while adding, “Also many a times, it so happens that women see people in their friends circle getting married at an early age and eventually after the honeymoon period they see the compromises made by their peers, which they are not ready for and hence despite
Everywhere in the world, women have broken down gender barriers and are working alongside men. Strong leaders, multi-taskers, femme fatales… the world lies at their feet but marriage still remains a topic of concern. While we have instances of women being unhappy in marriage and a whole lot of divorcees, what about single women? Is being ‘cool and single’ for women just an outward declaration? Isha Mukoo finds out
feeling the need for that special someone, they keep off and only come out in the open when they are ready or feel the need to be with someone without compromises. One just needs to find the right one who understands her and vice versa.” Ashwini Pai, a 25-year-old working professional who married recently is only happy to have done that. “I never thought that I will get into it so soon but I think things fall right into place just when you are not looking. Everything was so right and there was nothing to complain, especially when your partner understands you so well. We all need that special someone in our life sooner or later and marriage is not the benchmark to find that special one. But if it is, so be it,” she quips. While we have our almost-single ladies who feel marriage is a binding force that might slow down their career moves, deep down, be it the emotional void or looking at your peers getting married, it’s human tendency to want to be with that special someone to talk or fight or just sit quietly with.
Would you want to put a ring on it?

or many years researchers have tried to explain why the suicide rates among adolescent and teens are high when compared to any other age group. It is only in recent times that they’ve identified a high proportion of these youths to be homosexuals. In many studies conducted by research labs in the US, it was found that the rate of attempted suicides among the LGBT youth was very high. In September 2010, Dan Savage and his husband started the ‘It Gets Better’ project in the US aiming at preventing suicide among LGBT youth. It is an Internet-based project where gay adults convey the message via videos that the lives of the teenagers will improve. The project has seen a tremendous response, with over 200 videos getting uploaded within the first week of its launch. Celebrities like Lady Gaga, Anne Hathaway, Stephanie Miller and even the president of the US have lent their voices against bullying of gay individuals and have promised them a better future ahead. In India, the impact of the project was felt quite significantly. For the first time, we had Indians talking about their personal experiences and telling the world how it gets better. We now have people recording videos even in regional languages so the message reaches a wider audience. Amidst rampant discrimination across the country, the videos come as a breath of fresh air and show us clearly that we, as a nation, are making strides in the right direction.

Why don’t you take some cooking lessons, where you learn how to put some tadka in the dal. Read some books on how to spice things up, I hear they have some really spicy ones in the market. As for your man, give him a guilt-free pass for the weekend and let him come back refreshed. Movie: Roudram Cast: Jiiva, Shriya Saran Director: Gokul Rating:
oudram is one of those films where you end up wondering why someone had to spend two-and-half-hours to prove a point. Right from the word go, we are told that the protagonist is an angry young man who will not tolerate injustice. So far so good. Yet, when the director chooses to narrate the same point over and over again, it gets quite boring. Directed by Gokul, Roudram stars Jiiva and Shriya Saran in lead roles. The film is about a guy whose life is at stake because of his constant indulgence in picking up a fight, much to the dismay of his family members. Jiiva stars as Shiva, who picks up fights with several goons without a second thought. This eventually becomes a major concern for his father (Jayaprakash). He falls in love with Priya (Shriya), who’s the daughter of a police office. Elsewhere, two gangsters Kittu (Ganesh Acharya) and Gowri are at loggerheads with each other. Shiva gets involved in a tussle with both of them and what happens when he becomes the target of these gangsters forms the rest of the story. You can’t help but feel pity for Jiiva who finds himself in this botched up film. Most part of the first half revolves around Jiiva’s ability to portray anger through his eyes and he’s good at it. The second half is no different either but by then, the lethargic narration sends the audience into a sleep mode. Roudram has so many stunts that after a point of time, the action sequences are reduced to slickly shot trailers, which fade in and out. The presence of Shriya doesn’t help much either, although one cannot find fault with her. It’s only the subplot involving Shiva and his family members, which has good emotional quotient. The actor who is cast as Gowri definitely deserved a better ending after all the hype built up right from the beginning of the film. Shanmugasundaram’s cinematography is good and the choice of locales to make this film couldn’t have been better. Prakash Nikki’s music is disappointing. If only the film had more story, it would have certainly made for an interesting watch. Thumbs down to Roudram. It’s a one-way ticket to boredom.
Rajendra Prasad shines in Ayyare I n Ayyare, Rajendra Prasad plays a god-man; however, there’s no similarity between this character and Swami Nityananda. Sagar Chandra, the director of the film, takes two tales and tries to weave a plot around them. The problem with the film is that the link between these two tales is so loosely knit that the second half of the film feels like a completely different film altogether. Shivaji, Rajendra Prasad, Sai Kumar and Anisha Singh play lead roles in this film. Shivaji stars as Venkatesham, who is a mechanic despite hailing from a well to do family. One day he bumps into Anjali (Anisha) and falls in love with her. After initial hiccups, Anjali reciprocates his love; however, her father opposes their marriage. Elsewhere, Para-
kaya Baba (Rajendra Prasad) becomes quite famous and hundreds of people become his devotees. Anjali’s father is one among his devotees. What’s the link between Venkatesham and Parakaya Baba and how both of them resolve their issues forms the rest of the story. The first half of the film is dreadfully boring and Sagar Chandra takes the tried and tested route to establish the relationship between Venkatesham and Anjali. There’s hardly a spark in this love story. Cameos by Srinivas Reddy, Dhanraj and Ali are the only saving grace in the first half. However, the second half of the story brightens up with the entry of Rajendra Prasad. He’s extremely good in emotional scenes in his role and
carries the entire second half on his shoulders. The good part is Sagar Chandra doesn’t stereotype god-men in the film. Here, Rajendra Prasad turns god-man out of desperation, although he doesn’t try to dupe his devotees. More than anything, the film mirrors the society’s blind belief in god-men and the extent to which people go to prove their devotion. One of the film’s most hilarious scenes involves a deMovie: Ayyare votee quotCast: Shivaji, Anisha, ing verses from the Rajendra Prasad Bhagavad Director: Sagar Chandra Githa much Rating: to the embarrassment of the Baba.

Sonakshi-Ranveer head for Purulia
R
anveer Singh is immersing himself into his upcoming film Lootera more than he usually does. Not only is he unofficially assisting director Vikramaditya Motwane, he is also taking keen interest in checking out the locations personally. The shooting of Lootera was shifted from Dalhousie to Bengal at the last minute, and when Ranveer heard that the Bengal location was Purulia, scene of a mysterious unauthorised arms-dropping in 1995, Ranveer insisted on getting there first to make sure the place was safe for a lady. This isn’t the first time during their schedules together that Ranveer has tested the waters. Earlier when Kashmir was snowed under, Ranveer insisted that he go to Dalhousie alone to check out the density of the snow. Producer Vikas Bahl confirmed Ranveer’s involvement. “Ranveer did visit Dalhousie prior to the shooting. He insisted on exploring the snow-scape with the unit. He stayed outdoors in the freezing cold for one whole day and returned convinced that we’d have to postpone our Dalhousie schedule.
“Sonakshi was warned from proceeding just in time. The snowfall this year in that area is the most intense in 17 years. Our unit needed hot water to open the doors of the cars,” said Bahl. The unit will now return to Dalhousie in February when the snow will subside. “About 40 percent of the Ranveer-Sonakshi romance in Lootera unfolds in the snowfall. So there’s no getting away from the snow. The rest will be shot in Purulia. So that is where we’re heading now,” he added. The unit of Lootera has lost close to Rs1 crore thanks to the postponement of their schedule in Dalhousie. The producers hope to make up for lost time and money after the Purulia schedule. The one member of the unit who seems most traumatised by the unscheduled change is director Motwane. “It’s easier for the rest of us to relocate ourselves. But Vikramaditya has to reposition his entire creative process from one state of mind to another, so that we don’t waste any more time and the stars’ dates,” said Bahl. IANS

Zoe Saldana Helps Elderly Woman After Car Accident
Z
oe Saldana has played an action hero on the big screen — and this week she played a hero in real life. The Avatar star, 33, rushed to the aid of an elderly woman who had reportedly gotten into a car accident in Culver City, Calif., on Wednesday. “Zoe witnessed the car accident, and was very quick to help,” says an onlooker. She “immediately got on the phone with 911

There they called 911 and waited for police and paramedic attention on the scene. The onlooker adds: “While waiting for help to arrive, Zoe returned to the woman’s car and picked up the woman’s handbag and sweater. Zoe was very caring and sweet to the woman.”

eonardo Di Caprio has had the most amazing spell at the box office the past few years with incredible back-toback hits like The Departed, Blood Diamond, Revolutionary Road, Shutter Island and Inception. Every role he picked, he made it seem like it was written for him. J. Edgar (which released worldwide last year) is another of those movies. Except that this time, he
is let down by everything else in the movie, from editing to narrative and lighting to makeup. Which is all the more surprising considering that it comes from a director as revered as Clint Eastwood. Di Caprio plays the FBI chief Edgar Hoover and his rise from an obscure minion in the Justice Department to becoming the face of law enforcement in the US. The
movie takes off with an aged Edgar commissioning a memoir prompting a series of flashbacks to the highlights of his life. It includes everything from Edgar’s mission to capture Communist radicals, his war against outlaws such as John Dillinger, his investigation into the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh’s son, and finally his power-hungry quest to hoard secret files and wiretap evi-

s hard as it is to imagine, Kate Beckinsale is back as Selene in the fourth edition of Underworld titled the Awakening. To its credit, this is the first film in the franchise to release in 3D. The epic battle between Vampires and Lycans continues as Selene escapes from a 12-year sentence to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans. The free for all has humans now going all out to eradicate both the species. While it’s one of the better movies in the series, thanks to the seamless visual effects, 3D wizardry and action sequences, the plot still remains a sore point. It is repetitive and quite stagnant, especially if you watched the previous editions of the series. Kate Beckinsale, is as usual, a joy to watch in her leather corsets and blue-eyed vampire. Our advice? Give it a miss if you have anything else to do this weekend.
dence on the rich and the mighty. While the public persona of Hoover makes for one side of the story, a fair amount of space is dedicated to his personal side too. Behind the confident administrator is the closet homosexual whose only confidantes are his ever-loyal secretary (Naomi Watts), and his gay partner and right-hand man (Armie Hammer). But it’s his beloved but frigid

mother (Judi Dench) whose approval Edgar constantly craves. To give it credit, there are some interesting moments and brilliant scenes interspersed throughout the movie, if you haven’t fallen asleep by then, that is. So we say, if you are a hardcore Di Caprio loyalist, you are likely to enjoy this movie. Otherwise, you will be prudent to give this one a miss. PADMINI C

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Playing Field MELBOURNE: Former champion Maria Sharapova of Russia defeated Germany’s Angelique Kerber in straight sets to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Saturday. Sharapova won 61, 6-2, a scoreline that flattered the fourth seed, who was pushed hard by Kerber in the second set before winning in just under an hour and a half. Sharapova, who won in Melbourne in 2008, broke Kerber three times in each set but had to battle in the second set as the German 30th seed lifted her game. “I played a really good first set but she certainly stepped up in the second,” Sharapova said. “She was a semifinalist at the US Open (in 2011) so she has been on the big stage before and I knew she could produce some good tennis. “The second set was a lot tougher than the scoreline suggests.” Sharapova did not help her cause with 22 unforced errors, 15 of those coming in the second set. But she always looked in control against Kerber, who defended well but was rarely able to come up with a big shot to hurt the Russian. Sharapova remains in contention to finish the Australian Open with the world number one ranking, along with current holder Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka, all of whom are into the fourth round. Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova benefited from the second injury retirement in quick succession in the women’s draw when Maria Kirilenko pulled out of their Australian Open third round match Saturday. The Czech second seed was leading 6-0, 1-0 when Kirilenko, who hurt her thigh towards the end of the first set and needed medical treatment, decided not to continue.

TALK ON COURT Tomic to take on his idol Fedex on court MELBOURNE: Bernard Tomic once sat glued to the TV watching his hero Roger Federer but on Sunday he’ll be on the other side of the net, battling the Swiss for a place in the Australian Open quarterfinals. The Australian teen sensation has knocked over two seeds on his way to the round of 16 and now faces a player he rates as the greatest of all time in an intriguing clash of tennis’s ruling class against a pushy pretender. Tomic, 19, has already played the Swiss in the Davis Cup in Sydney last September, losing in four sets, but the rising star now faces the 16-time grand slam champion on the biggest stage. “I’m playing good and have a lot of confidence and it’s my home grand slam. People are going to support me,” said Tomic, whose languid and composed playing style belies his tender years. “Sometimes it’s not support. Against Roger you need to know how to play tennis and I need to play well if I have any chance of beating him. That’s why he’s the greatest to play the sport.”
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga celebrates after beating Frederico Gil. Tsonga won 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
Nalbandian denies throwing water MELBOURNE: David Nalbandian angrily denied throwing water at an Australian Open staff member Saturday and vowed to appeal against an $8,000 fine imposed following his stormy exit from the tournament. Nalbandian endured a rollercoaster 46, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/5), 10-8 loss to American John Isner on Wednesday and he was incensed when the chair umpire refused to allow a key Hawk-Eye challenge at the climax of the marathon. The Argentinian argued on court for several minutes with the umpire, whom he later accused of incompetency. And he was slapped with the hefty fine by organisers who accused of him of hurling water at a tournament worker. But Nalbandian said he was simply washing his hands when a doctor “incredibly” accused him of splashing water at him. “I fully deny throwing water after the match I played against Isner,” he tweeted. “During anti-doping control, I was washing my hands and the doctor incredibly accused to me of throwing water at him. “Two injustices — one inside and another one outside the court. I am going to appeal the sanction.”

No 1 Willstrop starts season with victory NEW YORK: Squash’s world number one James Willstrop began the 2012 season with a memory-tugging win and a plan to hold on to his new status. The Englishman reached the pinnacle for the first time on New Year’s Day and celebrated on Friday with an 11-7, 11-3, 114 first-round Tournament of Champions win over Zac Alexander, a promising 22-yearold qualifier from Brisbane. It was here, at Grand Central terminal two years ago, that Willstrop won what he called “the most memorable of my major titles”.
SQUASH This time around, he looked ominously comfortable, increasing his ratio of winners in the second and third games despite increasing noise from passing rush hour commuters during his 31-minute success. Willstrop’s ability to maintain his dominance — he is attempting a fourth PSA World Series title in a row — may hinge on his skill at managing his body and his schedule. “I will give these things special attention,” he said. “There are obviously issues playing squash because it is such a hard sport. You know that when you walk off court after a
match. Your body gives you a warning. “But I do the right work with the right people. I work closely with my physio and worked hard on my body to withstand the pressure. I feel good about what I am doing, and am working hard on getting it right.” Willstrop may need to do that consistently if he is to regain the Tournament of Champions title in a field containing several
of the sport’s greats. Nick Matthew, the world champion from England, begins Saturday with a match against Wael El Hindi, the former top ten Egyptian, while Amr Shabana, the four times former world champion from Egypt, will meet his compatriot, Ali Anwar Reda. Greg Gaultier, the former world number one from France, will face Borja Golan, the former top ten Spaniard.
Later Willstrop was helped when two former world number ones in his half, Karim Darwish and Thierry Lincou, were beaten. Egypt’s Darwish missed a point for a two-game lead and was beaten 4-11, 13-11, 11-8, 115 by Daryl Selby, the British national champion, while France’s Lincou lost 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 to Marwan El Shorbagy, the world junior champion. Khan threatened with legal action LONDON: Mustafa Ameen, the International Boxing Federation official at the centre of the Amir Khan world title fight controversy, threatened legal action against the British star on Friday. Khan lost his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles on a split decision to American opponent Lamont Peterson in Washington on December 10. But Ameen, an IBF official who was ringside but had no official role at the fight, was accused by Khan of interfering with the judges’ scorecards.
“Amir Khan is going to have to apologise,” Ameen told Sky Sports News. “I’m going to tell you that I am already in the process - you are hearing it first - I will litigate this. “I am already in discussions with some of the most successful legal firms in Britain regarding the slander, the libellous statements that have been made against me by Amir Khan and other individuals in the press and I intend to fully seek a remedy in a legal form, in a court of law. Rangers unveil Darvish LOS ANGELES: The Texas Rangers formally introduced prize acquisition Yu Darvish on Friday, saying the Japanese star pitcher is the kind of player they need as they strive for a World Series title. “His physical talents are well-documented,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said at a much anticipated press conference at The Ballpark in Arlington, the Rangers’ home field near Dallas. “What we discovered is that his competitiveness, his inner drive, his work ethic are equal to his talent.” Darvish inked a six-year deal worth $60 million on Wednesday, shortly before the deadline for the Rangers to sign him or return him to the Japan League for the upcoming season. The US club, runners-up in the last two World Series, bid a record $51.7 million last month simply for the rights for a 30-day period to negotiate a deal with Darvish. The Rangers, who lost to San Francisco in the 2010 World Series and St. Louis in the 2011 championship final, beat out the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays for the rights just to make a deal with Darvish.

TITBITS Inquiry into death of basketball player VANNES: Authorities have opened an enquiry after a 25-year-old American basketball player died of a heart attack during a match, officials said on Friday. James Chambers, the son of retired US pro Jim Chambers, died during a match between Saint-Brieuc and Vannes. After learning that a defibrilator held courtside was not working, the elder Chambers has lodged a lawsuit alleging “involuntary homicide”.

Stoner to Rossi: Step up PARIS: World champion Casey Stoner on Friday told long-time rival Valentino Rossi to mount a serious challenge to his crown after a lacklustre season left the Italian without a race win for the first time in his 15-year career. Australian rider Stoner, the 2007 and 2011 champion, wants to see a healthy challenge launched by Rossi’s Ducati team, but doubts their potential to eclipse his Honda outfit. “They are saying that they completely revamped 90 percent of the bike, but they did that in the middle of last year. They changed the bike back to front and top to bottom and nothing much changed,” said Stoner. “I’m hoping, for Ducati’s sake, that they can put together a competitive bike this year because the championship needs it. “Regardless of what the rid-
ers want, everyone needs as many manufacturers at the front as possible. Yamaha and
Honda want competition; unfortunately Kawasaki and Suzuki are gone from the
championship, so we need all bikes at the front.” Stoner won 10 races in 2011 and believes that once again it will be Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo, the 2010 world champion, who will be his main rival when the new campaign gets under way in Qatar on April 8. “Jorge was first in 2010 and second in 2011, he will always be there fighting. All the factory guys as well as Andrea (Dovizioso) will be pushing up there on the Tech 3 Yamaha, it’s the same crew as in the past,” Stoner told www.motogp.com. Before the season starts, however, Stoner has a more pressing concern as his wife Adriana is expecting a baby. “Adriana is doing great. We just want these last few weeks to go as smooth as possible. I hope I can be home for the birth as it’s due right in the middle of both tests, so I’m crossing my fingers I can be home for it.” AFP
Oz police to look into SCG fan-punching row SYDNEY: Australian police said on Saturday they have launched an internal review after footage aired on television showed an officer repeatedly punching a fan at Sydney Cricket Ground. The Seven Network video shows a uniformed New South Wales officer hitting a person at least five times in the stands of the SCG during Wednesday night’s Big Bash Twenty20 clash between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers. “Following vision (footage) from a media organisation being made available to police, an internal review of the incident is now under way,” a police spokeswoman said. “Police employ a variety of techniques to achieve compliance and the review will examine whether the techniques used in this instance were appropriate to the situation.” Police allege a 39-year-old man refused to leave the ground despite repeated requests to do so. NSW Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Murdoch told Channel Seven that “the video footage, in isolation, doesn’t look great”.

Messi isn’t the best... yet: Pele PARIS: Brazilian legend Pele insisted on Friday that Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, a Champions League winner with Barcelona and three-time Ballon D’Or king, cannot yet be considered as one of the world’s greatest players. Pele called on his own record of three World Cup triumphs as well as a career tally of 1,283 goals to reserve judgement on the little Argentine wizard. “Some people will say that Beethoven didn’t know how to play the piano, that Michelangelo couldn’t paint and that Pele didn’t know how to play football,” Pele told Le Monde newspaper. “When Messi scores 1,283 goals like me, when he wins three World Cups, then we can talk about it again. “Football changes and records are there to be beaten, but it’ll be very hard to beat mine. People ask me all the time: ‘When is the new Pele going to be born?’ “Never. My father and mother have closed the factory.”

Beware of RVP: Rooney LONDON: Wayne Rooney admits Manchester United must stop in-form Arsenal striker Robin van Persie if the champions are to keep their title defence on track with a victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side romped to a remarkable 8-2 win over Arsenal back in August, but Rooney knows the Gunners are much-improved since that humiliation and the United striker believes van Persie has been the key to their revival. Van Persie has scored 20 times since the Old Trafford demolition and the Dutch forward has been almost unplayable at times. If Arsenal avenge their Manchester mauling and dent United’s bid to move level on points with leaders Manchester City, it is likely van Persie will have given another masterclass. “Van Persie has scored a lot of goals and is playing really well,” Rooney said. “He will be the biggest threat for

Arsenal on Sunday. Van Persie and (Aaron) Ramsey are certainly the two who have stood out for them this season.” With Rooney, who bagged a hat-trick against Arsenal in August, back in form after a barren run, Sunday’s game promises to be a shoot-out between two of the best strikers of their generation.
