Paul is the founder of the Praja Shanti Party in AP. He was taken into custody from Central Park hotel. Paul was immediately produced before the district judge where he was remanded to judicial custody. He was an accused in his younger brother David Raju’s murder case which took place in January 2010. David’s body was found at Kommireddypally village of Addakula Mandal of Mahbubnagar district in his car.

Two burnt alive in Madhira

wo people were burnt alive in a major fire in the district during the early hours of Sunday. One of the deceased was a fire service personnel. Police say that the fire occurred in a cold storage warehouse in Madhira caused by an electrical short-circuit. Several bags of chilli stored in the warehouse were gutted. Police said one person working in the godown and a fire engine driver were caught in the fire and burnt alive. A fire engine was also partially burnt. Deputy speaker Mallu Bhatti Vikramarkha and district collector Siddharth Jain visited the spot. The collector has ordered an inquiry into the accident. GHMC Corporators go AWOL Adjournment of GHMC general body meeting on Saturday due to lack of quorum is a blow to people’s aspirations

t is the political chicanery at its worst. All through corporators berated the GHMC officials for neglecting public issues and when it was time to discuss popular woes, they were absent. For lack of quorum, the mayor had to adjourn the general board meeting to May 24. The 9th General Body Meeting of GHMC was abruptly adjourned following lack of quorum in evening at 5.30pm on Saturday. Out of the total 17 subjects listed for discussion during the meeting, only five matters could be discussed during the meeting which lasted over six hours. The discussed issues included property tax, sanitation, projects/works, administration, tobacco smokers and advertisement hoardings. After the tea break, most corporators disappeared. The Mayor waited for 5 minutes ringing the bell and thereafter he gave up

proper solution to “solve them,” Congress floor leader K Venkatesh told Postnoon. MIM Floor Leader Nazeer Ahmed also supported the idea and said that the two-day meeting would help all the corporators to share their views and suggest suitable measures to solve public grievances. “Presently, only few of the corporators out of 150 are getting an opportunity to speak during the council meeting. But the twoday meeting idea would prevent this situation and provide equal opportunity to all the corporators,” he said.

Congress tops the list The ruling Congress party corporators topped the list of the members giving a miss to the meeting. Out of total of 55 corporators, only 21 corporators turned up to the meeting when it began. The number reduced to a single digit by evening leading to the adjournment. Fifteen corporators of main opposition TDP did not attend the meeting at all. However, the mayor was unavailable for comments as his mobile was switched off.

But Anna’s cutouts and Gandhi Cap are seen at many places and the man professing to follow Anna is TDP candidate and former minister Chikkala Ramachandra Rao. Chikkala is widely considered

a clean man with no record of corruption. “He is the ideal candidate to seek vote for values Anna stands for,” remarked a TDP leader. Campaigners say since Rao donned Anna cap, the situation has changed in his favour.

But the Anna feat is not going unchallenged. The rivals, Congress and YSRC, are consulting the chief electoral officer Banwarlal if the TDP can use Anna’s image and seek votes in his name. TDP leader Dayakar

Reddy dismissed it as a panic reaction. Chikkala is expected to divide the Kapu votes though Kapus are generally Congress accolades. Thota Trimurthulu is the Congress candidate and Pilli Subhashchandra Bose, the YSRC. While the outcome would be difficult to predict, it is generally accepted that Chikkala and his Anna avatar has added zest to the drab campaign. What makes his rivals shaky about Rao’s anti-graft posture is because of his popularity and clean image. He won in 1994 elections as an independent from Ramachandrapuram constituency with a huge majority of 4,027, despite the huge TDP wave led by late NTR.

Yashki to quit if party fails to announce ‘T’ NIZAMABAD: Local Congress MP Madhu Yashki Goud on Sunday declared that he would not hesitate to resign from the Lok Sabha and primary membership of the party if the attitude of the Congress High Command on the Telangana issue remains unchanged even after the ensuing Assembly by-elections. Speaking to media persons here, Yashki exuded confidence that the party high command would announce a clear cut policy on Telangana in July this year. f you are an aspiring indie filmmaker, New York is the place to be. Chandra Pemmaraju, the director of Love, Lies and Seeta, explored some never before seen locales in New York City. Although the shooting was wrapped up in 28 days, Chandra confesses that they were always falling short of funds. “It was a really tough task. If at all I could raise the required funds, I would have completed the

film a year ago and I probably would have had more time to look at the creative aspects in detail,” Chandra says adding, “even when I was shooting I was thinking of how to get the shoot going for the next 15 days. I used to go for shoot in the morning, come back and email various people explaining our project hoping that they would invest.” The toughest part, however, was convincing people that Love, Lies and Seeta was not a Bollywood film. “When you are outside India, the moment you say an Indian film, it’s nothing but Bollywood for people. They expect a ridiculous story line with song and dance. I wanted to make an Indian film with American sensibilities, which may not go well with Indians but might appeal to international audience. It was tough convincing people and I am not sure if they saw what I had envisioned, but most of them just funded the project as they saw genuine effort,” Chandra recalls. His most important learning experience was that a filmmaker needs a dedicated team to work towards the same goal right from day one. Now that the film has released in India, apart from being selected at several film festivals, he can heave a sigh of relief. So what kept him going back when he was filming Love, Lies and Seeta? “There were many days when I was cursing myself that I had this bug to make a film and why I didn’t stick to a 9-6 job earning decent pay. It irks you especially when your friends look at you like you’re some failure working towards a lost cause. But in the end, challenges are what kept me and my team going,” Chandra signs off.

JP senior leader and former minister Bandaru Dattatreya has alleged that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was using officials as placards. Talking to the media at his party office on Sunday, he alleged that the CM was using the ACB for political purposes. He said that Kiran was following the footsteps of late Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy in the transfer of officials. He questioned the CM to explain why Prasada Rao was appointed as the DG of ACB. Referring to Congress MP V Hanumantha Rao shedding tears for Telangana in the Rajya Sabha, Dattatreya said that he should instead go to his party president Sonia Gandhi and beg her to bifurcate the State. Alleging that the TRS was diluting the Telangana movement willfully, Dattatreya said that his party would pinpoint the mistakes being committed by the TRS in the Telangana movement in Parakala campaigning. He also claimed that the main contest in Parakala would be between the TRS and BJP. He sarcastically said that the TRS was suffering from BJP phobia. It may be recalled that Dattatreya had expressed his anger at TRS for calling his party a communal organisation. If medical circles are to be believed, Hyderabad is giving other metros a run for their money in this aspect. ow many times have you cursed the censor board for beeping out words which are part of our daily lives? How many times have you cringed when the audio cuts and blurring out of few images played spoilsport while watching a film? Censorship is sort of like a bitter pill which you don’t want but are told that it’ll do you a lot of good. When it comes to films, censorship is deemed necessary for the greater good of the society, or at least this is what the government wants us to believe. Call it over sensitivity or apathy towards creative freedom, there have been numerous instances where the censor board members have locked horns with filmmakers and also angered the audience. In 1909, England introduced The Cinematography Act to ensure that the theatres had taken strict measures to ensure fire safety. Back then, the film was made from cellulose nitrate base, which was highly inflammable. Although several Indian filmmakers continue to make and screen films, India didn’t have a Cinematography Act of its own till 1920. Initially, the power to censor films was vested in the hands of the police chiefs in major cities like Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Lahore. The British government kept a close eye on films lest they whip up patriotic fervour among the audience and even zamindars, who were close to the ruling government, took a keen interest in the kind of films being made. In 1939, Gudavalli Ramabrahmam’s Raithu Bidda was banned by the British government after the zamindars raised objections about their portrayal in the film. After Independence, the regional censor boards were dissolved and they were brought under the Censor Board in Bombay following the implementation of Cinematograph Act in 1952. The censor board still adheres to these rules. Despite the massive advancements both in terms of content and technology, the Cinematograph Act was revised only once in 1983.

HOW FREE IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH? In India, censorship has always been a bone of contention between filmmakers and the government body which has taken upon the mantle of moral policing in films. We find out more about censorship in India

Ironically, there are no preset qualifications to be a part of censor board, leave alone having anything to do with films. A film is watched by no less than 12 people and not more than 25 and when they reach a consensus, a certificate is given based on what the group decides. Most of the times the producers are at the mercy of the censor board. If a producer has any objection, he can approach a revision committee, which consists mostly of filmmakers. Visuals or dialogues which might hurt the religious sentiments or spark communal tensions are deleted without a second thought. Apart from this, portrayal of nudity, sex, smoking, drinking, homosexuality and graphic violence is still a taboo. In 1994 Sekhar Kapoor had to approach the Supreme Court to get his film Bandit Queen released after the censor board and revision committee refused to clear it. Anurag Kashyap’s debut film Paanch couldn’t get a censor certificate due to its disturbing content. In recent times, Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Aaranya Kaandam ran into trouble with the regional censor board which suggested 52 cuts apart from giving an A certificate. Producers of films like Satyam Sivam Sundaram, Black Friday, Fire, Pyar Ka Punchanama and Kissa Kursi Ka were refused a certificate due to various reasons including political blasphemy, nudity and use of expletives. The emergence of new age filmmakers like Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj, Bala, Ameer, Sasikumar is proving to be quite a challenge for the censor board. However, the censor board in Mumbai is a little more lenient with expletives and nudity in Hindi films. Ever since the government decided to discourage people from smoking and drinking, every film where characters smoke or drink, a statutory warning is flashed. There are severe restrictions on everything which might be remotely offensive to any group, thereby stifling the creative freedom. There have been talks to revamp the Cinematograph Act and also to introduce new system of censorship, but till then, how free is freedom of speech will continue to burn inside the minds of filmmakers.

Former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel seems to be returning to active politics after almost five years in political exile. And this has set tongues wagging in the state’s political circles. Some analysts feel that bringing in Patel may the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) way of quietly taking on its arrogant Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has been defying its leadership in more ways than one. Patel, one of the founders of the party in Gujarat, had been virtually sidelined since the 2007 assembly elections. But a surprise invitation from the BJP to Patel to attend the party’s upcoming national executive meeting in Mumbai has led to considerable speculation. Patel has not said whether he will go to Mumbai. Some see his silence as part of his wait and watch strategy. He is waiting for Narendra Modi to make his next move. If Modi attends the Mumbai meet, Patel may skip it. Although considered one of its most charismatic leaders, Modi has been having increasing prob-

lems with the BJP leadership. Annoyed with the party for accommodating his bête noire Sanjay Joshi in the national executive, Modi did not attend the last executive meeting. He also didn’t campaign in this year’s state elections. BJP’s former minister of state Gordhan Zadaphia is hinting this may well be true. Zadaphia told IANS that the invitation to Keshubhai could mean that Modi’s “political isolation has begun in the party”. Very few buy this, but Zadaphia’s statement cannot be dismissed if one looks at developments taking shape in the state. In recent times, Patel has blasted the Modi government and even alleged that the whole of Gujarat was living in fear. Without naming Modi, Patel alleged that there was no execution of government programmes, and what Gujarat was witnessing was just publicity.

Patel has addressed a number of social and community programmes in the last three months but the party has neither stopped him nor taken any action for criticising the BJP’s own government. In contrast, only five years back, Patel was stopped from attending the Patel community’s functions. According to political analyst Hemant Shah, the Patels in Gujarat are unhappy with the Modi regime. In the March Mansa assembly by-election, a constituency dominated by upper caste Patels, the Congress defeated the BJP after 17 long years. A fortnight ago, barely 5,000 Patels attended a meeting where Modi was present. But just three months back, Keshubhai Patel addressed a massive Patel gathering at Sidsar of Rajkot district. Benevolent president ‘saves’ 27 lives NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil has commuted the death sentence of a domestic help, who had murdered a retired Brigadier and his two family members in Dehradun, to life imprisonment. The Supreme Court, while sending Om Prakash to the gallows, had observed that “he is a menace to the society and it seems to us that the death sentence is the most appropriate punishment in this case”. The fact that Prakash was young when he committed the crime was rejected by the apex court, which noted, “the crime shocks the conscience of the society at large and of the court and the facts and circumstances unfolded in the case leave the court with an irresistible feeling that he is beyond reformation though young he is.” Patil, however, found it a fit case to be pardoned and issued orders in this regard on April 29, making Prakash the 27th case during her tenure to get mercy, according to an RTI

Now the 26year-old is going to an international conference in Brazil to speak about Indian domestic workers, labourers and hawkers. Salma, whose full name is Anis Fatima Shaikh, started selling vegetables from the age of seven even as she continued to study till Class 12 as a private student, and one day she took up the cause of the street vendors after she was harassed by government officials. “I then started to gather legal

information about the rights of hawkers (street vendors) and labourers. I then helped other hawkers fight for their rights,” said Salma, a leader of the Azad Hawkers Union, a part of the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI). “I have been imprisoned on a few occasions and when I read the names of the freedom fighters on the walls of the jail, I got inspired to fight for my cause,” she said. Salma will be attending the May 21-24 Global Network Conference in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. “Sixty participants from 20 countries will be at the confer-

ence. It will bring together people from trade unions, labour and human rights activists from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Arab countries and Europe,” Salma told IANS in fluent English. Currently, such protective ‘work wear’ for firemen has to be imported, with each dress costing as much as `1.5 lakh, industry sources said. “We are looking to expand scope of research here to develop cost-effective, fire-resistant work wear fabric for the country’s firemen,” ATIRA director AK Sharma said. Before this, ATIRA developed technology to manufacture fireresistant fabric for Oil and Gas sector workers. “We used different fibre blends to construct a fabric which meets international specifications, which is suitable for Indian working conditions, and is yet cost-effective. CAMERON OUT OF LOOP ON GROWTH–AUSTERITY DEBATE LONDON, UK: When the leaders of the G8 get together around the dinner table at Camp David this weekend, I hope the protocol chiefs will be seating British Prime Minister David Cameron well away from German Chancellor Angela Merkel. War is brewing between the two nations over the euro-zone crisis, if the British press is to be believed. “George Osborne: Angela Merkel damaging UK economic interests,” read one headline in The Daily Telegraph this week. “Germans must abolish themselves,” said a photo caption accompanying Ambrose EvansPritchard’s Daily Telegraph blog post detailing the trillions it will cost Germany and France to pay for a Greek euro-zone exit and how that event will ruin the British economy. ‘Pink Panther’ faces trial TOKYO: A Montenegrin member of the “Pink Panther” gang of international thieves has been sent home for trial over the $3.6 million robbery of a Tokyo jewellery shop, Japanese police said Sunday. In the June 2007 heist in the upmarket Ginza district, Radovan Jelusic and another Montenegrin man sprayed tear gas at three saleswomen in the store and stole a tiara, necklaces and other jewels worth 284 million yen. Jelusic, 41, wanted by Interpol over the crime, was arrested in Italy in 2010 in connection with a separate robbery and was transferred to Montenegro on Friday, a Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) spokesman said. “The suspect is scheduled to face trial in Montenegro as Japan has asked the Montenegrin authorities to punish him on its behalf,” the official told AFP. Jelusic has been charged by the MPD with robbery causing injury. Australian Reef Pilots, a firm with a century of experience in the region, raised its concerns after a Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier broke down near the reef on Friday and drifted disabled for more than a day before it was secured. The company wants to see shipping routes restricted and the area where vessels must use pilots extended, moves which could prompt strong objections from foreign vessels accustomed to free passage. “This is a second incident in about the last month where we’ve had a ship drifting outside the Great Barrier Reef but drifting towards it,” Australian Reef Pilots chief executive Simon Meyjes told AFP. “The biggest problem there is that they are in very deep water, they can’t drop anchor to

stop themselves drifting so they either have to fix their own problem or wait for help to come.” Meyjes said in the latest incident, involving the 186-metre, 45,000 tonne bulk carrier ID Integrity, it took close to 48 hours for tugs to reach and secure the vessel as it drifted in the Coral Sea. Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, dies at 62 LONDON: Robin Gibb, whose soaring vocals formed part of the unique Bee Gees sound, has died at the age of 62, leaving Barry as the sole surviving member from the band. The high-pitched close harmonies, sharp songwriting and disco-defining sound of elder brother Barry, Robin and his twin brother Maurice made them one of the biggest-selling groups of all time. Robin lost his battle against cancer of the colon and the liver on Sunday, a month after confounding doctors by emerging from a coma after pneumonia.

He underwent surgery in August 2010 for a blocked intestine — the same condition that killed Maurice in 2003 — but a tumour was found and he was diagnosed with cancer. The singer looked gaunt in his last few months as he struggled against the disease. Andy Gibb, their younger brother who was not in the Bee Gees, died in 1988 from cocaine addiction. “I sometimes wonder if all the tragedies my family has suffered — like Andy and Maurice dying so young and everything that’s happened to me recently — is a kind of

ndia’s Defence Minister AK Antony’s recent answer in Parliament confirms what the 2012 report of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed a couple of months ago: India is now the world’s largest importer of arms, accounting for 10% of all conventional weapon and ammunition purchases. Following India are South Korea (6%), Pakistan (5%), China (5%) and Singapore (4%) — these five countries together account for a 30% share of the global conventional arms imports, while Asia and Oceania put together will raise this figure to 44%. The implications of these statistics are serious since the global conventional arms trade is worth an annual $60 billion, and it has risen by 24% over the last 5 years (2007 – 2011) because of growing militarisation in Asia. Globally, the top five exporters of conventional arms are the United States, Russia, Germany, France, and Britain. Interestingly, following development of its domestic arms industry, China is now the world’s sixth largest exporter of weapons in the world. What an irony it is of international politics that the five permanent members of the United Nation’s Security Council are also the world’s top arms exporters! Is it possible for countries to promote peace and security in the world while they are at the same time merchants of death, trading in arms in rapacious pursuit of profits? It is not, and the Tony Blair government’s spurious ethical foreign policy is a good example. Tony Blair spoke of resolving the cycle of poverty and war in Africa which he called a blight on the world’s conscience. But this did not stop his government from selling to Tanzania a $40 million military air traffic system, even if that impoverished country had only 8 military aircraft. In 2002 when India and Pakistan were engaged in fairly aggressive nuclear posturing, Tony Blair visited India and Pakistan, expressing the hope that Britain could have a ‘calming influence’ in the region. In that trip his government sold India 60 Hawk jets worth $1.6 billion even though it was clear that this sale would threaten regional stability. Blair’s government scuttled an inquiry into corruption allegations against British

It is quite possible to point out another irony — how could India, whose Father of the Nation is considered the prophet of non-violence, be the world’s largest importer of arms? An estimated `24,475 crore was spent during 2010-11 for defence imports. The latest projections are that over the next 10 years an estimated $100 billion would be spent by India on arms, and some 30 % of that would be allocated for imports. Defence manufacturers around the world are licking their lips in anticipation. Analysts have pointed out that this level of defence spending is necessary for India. There are 7,000 kilometres of sea coast, 314,400 square kilometres of territorial seas and 14000 kilometres of land borders to be guarded. India shares land borders with six countries, two of whom she has had major wars with. Both these neighbours, Pakistan and China, have high defence spending too, so deterrence is the only way forward. But the insane doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is now outdated and increasing numbers of the world’s citizens are asking for a new thinking that will base foreign policy not on military might but cooperative relations, more people to people contact and respect for human rights.

The long-awaited general body meeting of the GHMC held on Saturday had to be adjourned due to lack of quorum, that is, 55 of the 220 members. The city has been facing numerous civic problems ranging from drinking water to pollution and yet when it came to getting to bass tack they bunked. It speaks volumes on the indifference of elected representatives that only five of 17 points on agenda could be discussed. And, these are the very people who lose no time berating officials for irresponsibility and neglect. The floor leaders of the party feel frustrated and they seem lacking the powers and will to keep the flock in control. Floor leaders of TDP, Congress, MIM and BJP support the idea that general body meeting could be made regular, once a month or at least once in two months. This would make the corporators get used to a drill; a drill that make them serve the public they have sworn to serve.

Relatively new democracies like India which are still developing countries need to get the priorities right. According to the multidimensional poverty index developed by Oxford University, there are more poor people in eight of the northern Indian states than in the 26 countries of sub-Saharan Africa. According to a study based on the multidimensional poverty index, the situation of Madhya Pradesh state in central India with 70 million inhabitants is not different from the desperate poverty of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). India and the DRC should do more to be proud members of the commonwealth of nations and to rank higher in the UN’s Human Development Index. An arms race diverts resources from that essential task of human development. It increases instability and because of the secretiveness of negotiations, provides ample scope for corruption. An arms race benefits only the defence manufacturer. Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu called the arms trade a new form of slavery whereas another Nobel laureate for Peace Oscar Arias Sanchez, declared “When a country decides to invest in arms, rather than in education, housing, the environment, and health services for its people, it is depriving a whole generation of its right to prosperity and happiness”.

rom the time she was enrolled in school as a five-year-old to this day, Anisha Rehmani has never stopped studying. Today, she is a 24-year-old with a BA (Honours) in English, a PG Diploma in Journalism, and an MA in Arts & Aesthetics. She has already enrolled for an M Phil programme in Art History and plans to follow it up with a PhD. A sure shot academician at best, or worst, someone with a chronic terror of entering the real world, it would seem. But hers is a rather simple explanation. She just wants to get “all the studying out of the way before starting work.” Anisha's might be an atypical case, but it brings into focus a much larger issue that plagues many students today. Reminiscent of the question that's repeatedly demanded of us upon graduation— what next? Study further, finish your education at the of risk specialising in a subject you might discover later holds no interest for you? Or return to college after working for a few years and risk putting a stopper in your career growth? The former is the best, says Vishnu

Sanjit, a Software Developer at Motorola who is going back to college after five years to pursue his MS. “After graduating from BITS Pilani, I planned to work for a while and then get into a B school, for which, work experience was required. But after putting in a few years at work, I've realised that telecom is my real area of interest. So I'm going to specialise in it. I wouldn't have realised this if I had gone straight to study,” he says. So would that be his advice as well? To work for a few years

and then take a call? “Absolutely, 2-3 years is ideal. It's the best way to find out if that's your true calling.” Making a compelling case for the necessity of work-experience is Mahiti Sinha, a mechanical engineer by education but a journalist by passion. “Most often, our choice of undergraduate study is defined by parental or peer pressure, uncertainty, job market or whatever is trending at the moment. Only, a few choose the course because they really want to make a career in it. By the end of the course, most are again at crossroads. You can go with the flow or actually test the waters in other fields to see where your aptitude lies. You can do that only by working. Otherwise, a by-pass to higher education means postponing the wisdom and most likely, ending up with a colossal waste of time, effort and money.” Post his graduation, and a few years of practice as a freelance photographer and filmmaker, Vivek Rao is headed to the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad for his Masters. He offers a rather interesting insight. Vivek says, “A lot of institutes abroad which focus on research oriented study want to know why a person who's already on the field and learning on the job needs to return

to college to study the same thing. The question is hard to answer, considering that most of us go back for a Masters mainly because, in India, it’s the minimum qualification, almost a societal requisite, if you are to consider your education complete. That said, I think two years of work experience is ideal before returning to college.” But what about hampering career growth? HR Manager Netra P dismisses it as a myth. “In two to three years, you just about learn the ropes. So it’s not like you are going to pass up on a senior management role. So that shouldn't be a concern. Instead, those years will give you perspective and reveal the realities of working life, and tell you a thing or two about the industry you are in. Moreover all that you studied till then is only theory, now you'll learn to apply them. So working for a while before pursuing higher studies will make all the difference.” The verdict seems unanimous. Getting a taste of the workings of the field you intend to make your career in is vital. It might even be the deciding factor in the course you will go on to specialise in. So, as tempting as it maybe, college might just have to wait a little longer.

s lifestyles start to change, a number of health issues have also started to crop up. This could vary from obesity to an increasing number of heart attacks in people as young as 24! Hypertension is one among the many problems that are being seen. A recent study by researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, found that nearly one in five young adults are suffering from high blood pressure which is also known as hypertension.

What is hypertension? According to Dr VK Bhargava, “Blood pressure or hypertension refers to the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The cut off point for hypertension varies depending on the age group. Hypertension can occur in anyone from a child to the elderly.” Talking about the cut off points, Dr Bhargava explains, “For people in the age group of 18 and above the normal level of blood pressure is 120/80. If the person’s BP is around 130-139 on the systolic scale and 85-89 on the diastolic scale than it is called pre-hypertension. If the BP reaches 140/90 then it is called hypertension.” According to Dr Shiv Kumar, chief of cardiology, Apollo Hospitals, Secunderabad, “Most

of the diagnosis for hypertension is incidental. Certain people may have no symptoms at all. Certain people do complain of palpitations, headaches and giddiness.” He adds, “There has been an increase in cases because of increase in awareness. More people are being diagnosed. But it is not right to say that it is the only cause for this new statistic. Lifestyle factors can also play an important role. The lifestyle factors such as growing obesity, food habits,

lack of physical activity and stressful lifestyle also play a role in causing hypertension.” Dr Bhargava adds, “excessive salt consumption, alcoholism and use of drugs such as cocaine can also be a cause. This lifestyle factors causes what is known as essential hypertension. If hypertension is causes due to a certain ailment like kidney disease and endocrine disease, then it is known as secondary hypertension.” 90 per cent of the cases due to not have a secondary cause that can be treated for, says Dr Shiv Kumar.

Treatment Controlling your diet is an important aspect of treating hypertension apart from the regular medication. Dr Bhargava says, “If a person has been diagnosed with hypertension, they should reduce their salt intake, control their weight, avoid alcohol and indulge in physical exercise.” Apart from these dietary modifications, certain drugs may also be prescribed to the patient. “When it comes to medication, continued treatment is important. Dr Shiv Kumar says, “Optimal treatment is important. It will not be sufficient if the patient takes a single pill and if the blood pressure improves slightly, stops the pill. Till the target level BP is not reached, treatment should be taken.” According to Dr Shiv Kumar, a revolutionary treatment is in the offering wherein BP can be cured with the help of radio-frequency. If this succeeds it will definitely be a major step in curing BP forever.

Prevention In order to prevent hypertension doctors suggest that one should control their salt intake, remain physically active and control their blood pressure. These precautions even if they cannot prevent may help postpone the start of the problem. Regular check-ups are also important as the symptoms of hypertension are not specific.

Awareness Talking about awareness in the youth about the need for checkups and prevention of hypertension, Dr Shiv Kumar says that although they are aware, they hardly bother. Dr Bhargava believes that the perception is changing. Many companies are sending their employees for pre-employment checkups and also during the course of the year. He mentions that master health checkups are also being undertaken in which BP is also checked.

It is important to spend time preparing your child. Preparation depends on the age of the child, since younger children will process information differently than older children. With an adolescent, involving them in the process from the beginning can be hugely beneficial to them. When you talk to your child make sure you do it in a relaxed manner. If possible both parents should be present for the first conversation. Talk to your adolescent openly about your feelings and allow them to express their feelings about the issue. This does not mean that you have to decide against having a child if they are upset or unhappy. If they are unhappy, allowing them the time to absorb the information will help. When talking to them, be open, honest, respectful of their feelings. If they are happy and want to share their joy, allow them to do so. Talk to them about how they will feel about sharing your time and your affection. Once they are comfortable, allow them to be a part of the process like planning for the baby room, buying clothes, deciding a name etc. Constantly remind your child that while things will be changing , your love will stay constant. thletes have a higher pain tolerance than those who do not exercise, a new study says. The study says active people perceive pain differently from those who are inactive and have a higher tolerance depending on what sport or activity they regularly undertake. Researchers at the University of Heidelberg looked at 15 previous studies that

involved athletes and pain, reported Men’s Fitness. The studies included athletes in various game sports as well as endurance and strength. The scientists were looking at both pain threshold — when pain begins to be felt — and pain tolerance — when pain begins to become unbearable, said WebMd. Athletes and non-Athletes were found to have similar thresholds for pain but the former had higher tolerance.

“Our analysis reveals that pain perception differs in athletes compared to normally active” people,” said study author Jonas Tesarz of the University of Heidelberg, according to Live Science. “Studies in athletes offer the opportunity for an evaluation of the physical and psychological effects of regular activity on pain perception, which might foster the development of effective types of exercise for relief in pain patients.”

This means that innovative, practical solutions are essential if sight is to be restored to people around the world with the condition,” the journal Nature Photonics reports. "The current implants are very bulky, and the surgery to place the intraocular wiring for receiving, processing and power is difficult. With our device, the surgeon needs only to create a small pocket beneath the retina and then slip the photovoltaic cells inside it," said Jim Loudin Daniel Palanker, study co-author from the Stanford University. “The implant is thin and wireless and so is easier to implant. Since it receives information on the visual scene through an infrared beam projected through the eye, the device can take advantage of natural eye movements that play a crucial role in visual processing,” added Mathieson, according to a Strathclyde and Stanford statement. AMD results in a loss of vision in the centre of the visual field (the macula) because of damage to the retina. It occurs in dry and wet forms. his year is turning out to be fantastic for Shraddha Das. “I am having the time of my life. I have two films in Telugu in hand and I have begun shooting for my first Malayalam film,” she says. She’s in Alleppey now and her excitement is palpable as she talks about Dracula 3D, her debut film in Malayalam. Vinayan is directing the film which stars Prabhu, Nasser and Monal Gajjar. “It’s also my first 3D film and it’s been a totally new experience for me. You can’t cut the shot while filming in 3D, even if you have three pages of dialogues in that shot. On the first day of my shoot, I

had to say five pages of dialogues. Luckily, I learnt my lines and did the shot in a single take,” she says, adding, “I play a very soft and innocent girl’s character in the film. That reminds me this is the first time I am playing a role like this. Most of the times I end up playing glamorous roles in Telugu. It’s good that I don’t have a set image in Malayalam film industry.” Shraddha Das has just signed a three film deal in Hindi with a leading production house in Mumbai. “I can’t reveal the details anytime soon. You’ll have to wait till June for the official announcement,” she signs off.

n his almost a decade-old Bollywood career, Shahid Kapoor has gone through a lot of personal and professional ups and downs. But despite as many as six back-toback box office disappointments behind him, he is undeterred because he feels success can do more harm than failure. “Success can be more dangerous than failure. When you are successful, you feel that you are doing everything right. So, failure can teach you a lot. I just believe in ‘Go out and do your best,’” Shahid told IANS. After Vishal Bharadwaj’s hit film Kaminey in which he featured in a double role opposite Priyanka Chopra, Shahid was seen in Dil Bole Hadippa!, Chance Pe Dance, Paathshaala, Badmaash Company, Milenge Milenge and Mausam. Alas, none of them generated good business. Now he will once again be seen with Priyanka, his rumoured former girlfriend, in Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani. How to play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

he sound of drums greeted one and all who attended the Super Seven cricket tournament held at the Lal Bahadur Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The two day tournament for coffee shops which had sixteen teams participate, saw Toss clinch the title when they defeated rivals Racers Edge by 23 runs. Taking first strike, Toss seemed like they could put up a defendable totally. But the fall of wickets regularly gave one and all the impression that they would end up on the losing side until Man of the Match, D. Ashrith’s willow saw the ball being hammered all over the field. He was well supported by teammate Saketh who scored 32 in 11 deliveries. Ashrith’s blistering 37 from 14 balls saw his team post a total of 91 in their stipulated six overs. Not only did he contribute with the bat, he bowled a brilliant final over too. “The minute I saw my teammate, Vamshi Ram, get run out because of an error from my side, I knew that something had to be done — I had to make my side win,” said Ashrith. Skipper, Samuel Rasori, was all praise for his team and Ashrith. “We were considered as

the underdogs here but we played as a team and Ashrith’s performance in the final helped us sail through.” There were many tense moments in the game but it was not just the finals which had

everyone on the edge of their seats. The semifinals and quarterfinals had their own set of surprises. Ciao, who were touted as tournament favourites, lost to Testa Rosa in the semifinals while Toss, who were considered

the underdogs, performed brilliantly to emerge title winners. Also, there were a few players who performed exceptionally well claiming hat-tricks and few others received praise for their batting skills. The tournament saw its fair share of spectators come and watch the matches. Like the players, they seemed to have high adrenal levels, cheering every single ball which crossed the boundary rope as well as every wicket that fell. The drummers enjoyed the matches too hitting the drums with all their might during every moment of cheer. A special mention has to be made for the umpires, who braved the scorching sun and gave the best possible decisions on the field. The scorer too needs to be given credit who managed to keep a proper track of the scores, ignoring all the distractions present in the stadium. The tournament was certainly a success and the fact that there are more upcoming events like the Super Seven cricket tournament, speaks for itself. According to one of the organisers, Karan Bhangay, June will witness a tournament between real estates firms while July will have the same for nightclubs. With tournaments of this kind being held once in a while, the cricket scene in the city is sure to grow by leaps and bounds.

LONDON: Some 12,500 British officers will be deployed daily during the Olympic Games in the country’s largest ever preplanned policing operation, the Metropolitan force said Monday. With 67 days to go until the event begins, police revealed that 52 forces from around Britain will provide officers for the operation, which will run from June 4 until September 16, after the close of the Paralympic Games. There will be around 12,500 officers on duty during peak days with 9,500 operating in London, according to a statement released by police. Specialist officers trained in search techniques, marine, public order and firearms will be on call along with the mounted sections, dog units and motorcycle escorts. “Every force is playing its part in delivering a fantastic summer of celebration,” said National Olympic Security Coordinator Chris Allison. “The summer of 2012 will be a busy and challenging time for the British police service, but with confidence and pride I can say we have the officers we need to keep the Games and our wider communities safe and secure,” he added. A security force of more than 40,000 people, backed by a huge intelligence operation, is to guard the Games — which start on July 27 — at a cost of £553 million ($877 million, 662 million euros). Some 13,500 of the security personnel will be from the Ministry of Defence and armed forces, working alongside police and more than 16,000 private security guards and unpaid volunteers. Security chiefs are believed to be preparing for a range of threats including a “lone wolf” terrorist, riots or cyber-attacks.

WARSAW: When they take to home turf in Euro 2012 next month, Poland will be hoping their campaign won’t turn sour like previous tournaments which dashed fans’ dreams of a revival of a golden age. The weight of history hangs heavy, as supporters pine for Polish football’s comefrom-nowhere glory days of Olympic gold in 1972, third place in the 1974 World Cup, Olympic silver in 1976 and a further World Cup third in 1982. But following an inspired season that saw him voted Poland’s player of the year, Lewandowski’s feet are firmly back on the ground. “The Euro’s looming, and that’s my number one target," he told the daily Gazeta Wyborcza. Unclear about role JAIPUR: With Rajasthan Royals ousted from IPL’s playoff contention, skipper Rahul Dravid says he is not sure about his role in the side and would take a break to think over before making any commitment. Talking to media after the humiliating 10-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians, Dravid, who had bid adieu to Test cricket, said it was disappointing to lose in such a fashion. “I really don’t know. I will have to think over. I would take a break and decide about my role. I will talk to my family and also the management of the Rajasthan Royals about my role and then I would decide. My goal is to develop young players,” Dravid said. “We have youngsters like Ashok Menaria, Ajit Chandila, Ankit Chavan and Gajendra Singh. I am sorry about the local lad Gajendra Singh who is a fine bowler but couldn’t get a chance to play,” he

added. “It was a pleasure to lead the side and the support from the management and support staff has been top notch. As far as my own performance is concerned I played my role as the opener with Ajinkya Rahane to satisfaction. I feel batting is one thing and scoring runs is another thing.” Dravid said the side now needs a youngster in the opening slot. “We need a young and talented player who could open the innings with Rahane. He might be with some other franchise but we would try and rope him for the next season. We also have god players hopefully we would make it to the play offs next year,” Dravid said. Hailing from a community of just 726 in southern Poland, and playing in a stadium tucked among cornfields on the River Dunajec floodplain, minnows Termalica Bruk-Bet Nieciecza won hearts this season as they came to within an inch of glory. But in the space of just two weeks, they found their fate out of their hands as they suffered a run of four defeats, with Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Kolejarz Stroze denying them promotion.
