GHMC Corporators go AWOL Adjournment of GHMC general body meeting on Saturday due to lack of quorum is a blow to people’s aspirations
GHMC Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

t is the political chicanery at its worst. All through corporators berated the GHMC officials for neglecting public issues and when it was time to discuss popular woes, they were absent. For lack of quorum, the mayor had to adjourn the general board meeting to May 24. The 9th General Body Meeting of GHMC was abruptly adjourned following lack of quorum in evening at 5.30pm on Saturday. Out of the total 17 subjects listed for discussion during the meeting, only five matters could be discussed during the meeting which lasted over six hours. The discussed issues included property tax, sanitation, projects/works, administration, tobacco smokers and advertisement hoardings. After the tea break, most corporators disappeared. The Mayor waited for 5 minutes ringing the bell and thereafter he gave up

Corporators blamed Ironically, when Postnoon took up this issue of absenteeism at the meeting with floor leaders of various parties, they disowned their colleagues and clearly evinced their disappointment. The leaders, it was obvious, do not have much authority over the flock. “I don’t know how to react. All corporators are responsible for this. The list also includes my own party corporators. The sole reason, I think for this, is lack of seriousness among these leaders to reach the expectations of their residents,” TDP Floor Leader S Srinivas Reddy said. However, Reddy did not give a direct answer to the question whether the party would initiate any action against the errant cor-

They should feel it is their responsibility to attend the meeting and raise public problems,” Reddy quipped. Incidentally, 30 TDP corporators out of a total of 45 attended the General Body Meeting. Among the 30 corporators, 15 corporators left the meeting hall after having lunch which included the best Hyderabadi cuisine viz Biryani, Pathar ka Gosh, Chicken Tikka, Rumali Roti and Dabal Ka Meetha. wrong message to people who voted for us. The lack of respect among the corporators for council meetings is resulting in these acts. They should realise these meetings are held in a similar manner as Parliament and Assembly, the law making bodies in the country,” Venkatesh said. BJP floor leader B Prakash said that the mayor should make it mandatory for the corporators to attend the council meetings and debate on public problems. He advised that if the council meeting are held once a month, the corporators would attend the meeting. “The council meetings should be held every month. This would enhance the interest among the corporators and encourage them to attend these meetings,” he said.

proper solution to “solve them,” Congress floor leader K Venkatesh told Postnoon. MIM Floor Leader Nazeer Ahmed also supported the idea and said that the two-day meeting would help all the corporators to share their views and suggest suitable measures to solve public grievances. “Presently, only few of the corporators out of 150 are getting an opportunity to speak during the council meeting. But the twoday meeting idea would prevent this situation and provide equal opportunity to all the corporators,” he said.
Congress tops the list The ruling Congress party corporators topped the list of the members giving a miss to the meeting. Out of total of 55 corporators, only 21 corporators turned up to the meeting when it began. The number reduced to a single digit by evening leading to the adjournment. Fifteen corporators of main opposition TDP did not attend the meeting at all. However, the mayor was unavailable for comments as his mobile was switched off.

‘Anna’ in Ramachandrapuram makes rival parties jittery ON THE
Chikkala’s clean slate and popularity are unnerving the Congress and YSRC CAMPAIGN
TRAIL
Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
R
amachandrapuram constituency is witnessing a tough three-cornered fight and one of the candidates is anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare! Not quite. But Anna’s cutouts and Gandhi Cap are seen at many places and the man professing to follow Anna is TDP candidate and former minister Chikkala Ramachandra Rao. Chikkala is widely considered
a clean man with no record of corruption. “He is the ideal candidate to seek vote for values Anna stands for,” remarked a TDP leader. Campaigners say since Rao donned Anna cap, the situation has changed in his favour.
But the Anna feat is not going unchallenged. The rivals, Congress and YSRC, are consulting the chief electoral officer Banwarlal if the TDP can use Anna’s image and seek votes in his name. TDP leader Dayakar
Reddy dismissed it as a panic reaction. Chikkala is expected to divide the Kapu votes though Kapus are generally Congress accolades. Thota Trimurthulu is the Congress candidate and Pilli Subhashchandra Bose, the YSRC. While the outcome would be difficult to predict, it is generally accepted that Chikkala and his Anna avatar has added zest to the drab campaign. What makes his rivals shaky about Rao’s anti-graft posture is because of his popularity and clean image. He won in 1994 elections as an independent from Ramachandrapuram constituency with a huge majority of 4,027, despite the huge TDP wave led by late NTR.

Yashki to quit if party fails to announce ‘T’ NIZAMABAD: Local Congress MP Madhu Yashki Goud on Sunday declared that he would not hesitate to resign from the Lok Sabha and primary membership of the party if the attitude of the Congress High Command on the Telangana issue remains unchanged even after the ensuing Assembly by-elections. Speaking to media persons here, Yashki exuded confidence that the party high command would announce a clear cut policy on Telangana in July this year. If that does not happen, he would quit the MP post as well as the Congress party, he said, adding that he would join hands with the people’s organisations and intensify the agitation for separate State. Yashki also disclosed that he would also go on a Padayatra under the auspices of ‘Walk for Telangana’.
‘In the West, any Indian film CM using officials as placards: BJP B is just a Bollywood film’ Chandra Pemmaraju, director of Love, Lies and Seeta, talks about how tough it was convincing people to believe in his idea
FILMS Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com
I
f you are an aspiring indie filmmaker, New York is the place to be. Chandra Pemmaraju, the director of Love, Lies and Seeta, explored some never before seen locales in New York City. Although the shooting was wrapped up in 28 days, Chandra confesses that they were always falling short of funds. “It was a really tough task. If at all I could raise the required funds, I would have completed the
film a year ago and I probably would have had more time to look at the creative aspects in detail,” Chandra says adding, “even when I was shooting I was thinking of how to get the shoot going for the next 15 days. I used to go for shoot in the morning, come back and email various people explaining our project hoping that they would invest.” The toughest part, however, was convincing people that Love, Lies and Seeta was not a Bollywood film. “When you are outside India, the moment you say an Indian film, it’s nothing but Bollywood for people. They expect a ridiculous story line with song and dance. I wanted to make an Indian film with American sensibilities, which may not go well with Indians but might appeal to international audience. It was tough convincing people and I am not sure if they saw what I had envisioned, but most of them just funded the project as they saw genuine effort,” Chandra recalls. His most important learning experience was that a filmmaker needs a dedicated team to work towards the same goal right from day one. Now that the film has released in India, apart from being selected at several film festivals, he can heave a sigh of relief. So what kept him going back when he was filming Love, Lies and Seeta? “There were many days when I was cursing myself that I had this bug to make a film and why I didn’t stick to a 9-6 job earning decent pay. It irks you especially when your friends look at you like you’re some failure working towards a lost cause. But in the end, challenges are what kept me and my team going,” Chandra signs off.
JP senior leader and former minister Bandaru Dattatreya has alleged that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was using officials as placards. Talking to the media at his party office on Sunday, he alleged that the CM was using the ACB for political purposes. He said that Kiran was following the footsteps of late Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy in the transfer of officials. He questioned the CM to explain why Prasada Rao was appointed as the DG of ACB. Referring to Congress MP V Hanumantha Rao shedding tears for Telangana in the Rajya Sabha, Dattatreya said that he should instead go to his party president Sonia Gandhi and beg her to bifurcate the State. Referring to the criticism being lev-
eled against the BJP by the RS, he said that TRS was worried that it would have no future if BJP won Parakala. Alleging that the TRS was diluting the Telangana movement willfully, Dattatreya said that his party would pinpoint the mistakes being committed by the TRS in the Telangana movement in Parakala campaigning. He also claimed that the main contest in Parakala would be between the TRS and BJP. He sarcastically said that the TRS was suffering from BJP phobia. It may be recalled that Dattatreya had expressed his anger at TRS for calling his party a communal organisation. He said that it was strange that TRS, which was aligning with Muslim League and MIM, was calling the BJP a communal party.

Real estate boom catches on Sudeshna Koka sudeshna.k@postnoon.com
A
year back places like Alwal, Kompally, Bolarum and Yapral were nothing but vast expanses of vacant land. But today these areas boast of posh gated communities and row houses. Once considered to be the outskirts of the City, these places are now self-sufficient and have everything from hospitals, shopping centres, educational institutions to eateries. Where earlier people shied away from living here, given how far it is from the IT hub, these days it’s one of the most sought after residential destinations. “The first reaction I receive from people when I tell them that I live in Yapral is, ‘God that is so far’. But it really isn’t. Considering the good roads these areas have and the free flowing traffic, commuting is not an issue at all,” says Pavan Kumar, a businessman. In fact, real estate in these areas is booming, making it a lucrative option for developers. “These areas are calm and serene, something that is hard to come
In stark contrast to west Hyderabad’s high rises and IT parks, is the calm and peaceful Secunderabad with its sprawling gated communities and townships, which are luring prospective residents by else where in the twin cities. We have developed 7.5 acres of land in Bolarum and have constructed 560 flats. Nearly 80 per cent have already been sold. The lower prices here are also luring people to this side of town. There is a 15 per cent difference in real estate prices between Secunderabad areas and those towards Hitech City. Here people can buy bigger houses in calm, peaceful localities,” says Ram Reddy, managing director, ArK
infrastructure developers. With most real estate developers setting their eyes on these areas, they now boast of several gated communities and townships. Moreover, the second phase of the MMTS will connect these areas to other important locations as well. “Commuting to this part of town has always been easy, when compared to going to Kukatpally or Gachibowli. The roads are well maintained and there are no traf-
TDP will restore lands to farmers, vows Naidu POLITICS TIRUPATI: Former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said that the TDP, after returning to power, would seize the lands encroached upon by the Congress leaders. Speaking to the media here on Sunday after participating in a campaign in Tirupati constituency where the by-election was going to be held on June 12, Naidu alleged that the Congress was conducting political business in Tirupati constituency. He also alleged that the Congress candidate contesting from Tirupati Venkata Ramana is known for grabbing lands in the
name of benamis. Naidu inspected the encroached land beside the TirupatiTiruchanuru main road, said to be grabbed by Venkata Ramana. Naidu enquired with the local people and former sarpanch of Tiruchanuru about the details of the lands said to be grabbed by Ramana. He lambasted the Tirupati Congress leaders for encroaching valuable lands by changing revenue records of the temple town. Alleging that the ruling party leaders were grabbing the lands across the State without any fear, he said that Congress leaders were encroaching upon not only government lands but also of the poor.
Cops resort to preventive arrests of TRS workers in Parakala POLITICS WARANGAL: Inview of the whirlwind tour of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana and AICC observer Vayalar Ravi in the Parakala Assembly constituency on Sunday, the police took some 300 Telangana activists into preventive custody.
Enraged over this, a large number of TRS leaders, including Vinay Bhaskar, Rajaiah, Ravinder Reddy and others squatted before the district police headquarters demanding that they be released immediately. Reacting to the preventive arrests of TRS workers, former MP Vinod Kumar condemned the police action. He demanded that the police immediately release the TRS workers unconditionally.
fic jams. With the MMTS coming up here, commuting will be easier and more affordable too,” says Venkat Varma Raju, a resident of Kompally.
Considering the area houses some of the better educational institutions is an added attraction. “The City is growing in all directions but Secunderabad has always shown steady growth. For instance, Hitech City saw rapid development in 2007-08 and later became stagnant. People who come from outside choose places like Whitefields and Kondapur but locals prefer Secunderabad. Besides, this side of town is greener and less polluted too,” says Phani Kumar Raja, CEO, Advaita commercials. He further adds that the township growth in Secunderabad has also directly supported retail growth. “Due to the development of sub pockets of Secunderabad there has been a boom in the retail industry. Places like Trimulgherry and AS Rao Nagar are faster growing in retail business. Rents are touching a whopping ‘90,000 per sft in these areas for commercial complexes. Not just retail but there is industrial development too.” Call it the cantonment effect or what you will, Secunderabad continues to retain its charm, luring prospective residents.

yderabad, which was slow to catch up with other major metros of India in surrogacy, has of late seen
a change. Today, many fertility clinics in the City are reporting increasing requisitions and readiness of women to lend a womb. If medical circles are to be believed, Hyderabad is giving other metros a run for their money in this aspect. With its list of premier fertility clinics and leading hospitals, Hyderabad is becoming an important station for surrogacy. Reports say couples from neighbouring states, Gulf countries and USA are now choosing Hyderabad for the main reasons of the availability of ideal candidates and lesser cost. “Five years ago, we barely undertook one surrogacy case in a month. Today we deal with at least ten cases every month and that’s a big number for sure. We get cases not only from the City but sometimes from other states too. Some couples bring their friends or known people to rent the womb and many a times we also provide women whose wombs can be hired,” adds Dr Samit Sekhar, chief embryologist, Kiran Fertility Center. “Surrogacy is in demand because of the success rates. These days couples mainly opt for it because of the quality equipment, favourable pricing and hassle-free procedure. However, the couple needs to undergo various procedures before opting
for surrogacy. Women who can’t conceive are only given a chance to opt for surrogacy,” said Dr Samit . Candidature for surrogacy is not easy as it sounds. “We make our decision only after talking to the expec-

womb doesn’t need to stay in the hospital for nine months, she needs to visit the hospital only for the checkups and other medical procedures. A team of eight doctors takes care of the process till the baby is delivered,” adds Dr. Samit. Dr Nusrat, senior gynaecologist says, “Since the time commercial surrogacy is legalised in India in 2002 there has been lot of demand for surrogate mother. Affordable prices, latest technologies, trained doctors and the success rates in the recent years had made Hyderabad a destination surrogacy. In comparison to other metros, the cost of renting a womb here is less. India is the only country apart from US where surrogacy is legal.” “In the recent years, surrogacy cases are on the rise in the City of Pearls and the main reason is the jam packed fertility centres in Mumbai and Delhi which are unable to meet the growing demand. The numbers of couples seeking surrogate have doubled. Earlier any clinic in city use to get only 15 to 20 cases a year and now on an average any fertility centre in Hyderabad must be getting 60 to 80 cases a year,” adds Dr Nusrat. Cost factor works in favour of India and Hyderabad, medical circles point out. The cost of surrogacy in the U.S. is about $80,000 whereas in Hyderabad it's only `3-`5 lakh, in addition to the medical fare and travel or food expenses of the surrogate mother. Hyderabad has now become a hot-spot for many couples from other countries too because of the low-cost and world-class medical presence. In other metros it costs around `8- `9 lakh per womb.

ow many times have you cursed the censor board for beeping out words which are part of our daily lives? How many times have you cringed when the audio cuts and blurring out of few images played spoilsport while watching a film? Censorship is sort of like a bitter pill which you don’t want but are told that it’ll do you a lot of good. When it comes to films, censorship is deemed necessary for the greater good of the society, or at least this is what the government wants us to believe. Call it over sensitivity or apathy towards creative freedom, there have been numerous instances where the censor board members have locked horns with filmmakers and also angered the audience. In 1909, England introduced The Cinematography Act to ensure that the theatres had taken strict measures to ensure fire safety. Back then, the film was made from cellulose nitrate base, which was highly inflammable. Although several Indian filmmakers continue to make and screen films, India didn’t have a Cinematography Act of its own till 1920. Initially, the power to censor films was vested in the hands of the police chiefs in major cities like Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Lahore. The British government kept a close eye on films lest they whip up patriotic fervour among the audience and even zamindars, who were close to the ruling government, took a keen interest in the kind of films being made. In 1939, Gudavalli Ramabrahmam’s Raithu Bidda was banned by the British government after the zamindars raised objections about their portrayal in the film. After Independence, the regional censor boards were dissolved and they were brought under the Censor Board in Bombay following the implementation of Cinematograph Act in 1952. The censor board still adheres to these rules. Despite the massive advancements both in terms of content and technology, the Cinematograph Act was revised only once in 1983.
HOW FREE IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH? In India, censorship has always been a bone of contention between filmmakers and the government body which has taken upon the mantle of moral policing in films. We find out more about censorship in India
8
Ironically, there are no preset qualifications to be a part of censor board, leave alone having anything to do with films. A film is watched by no less than 12 people and not more than 25 and when they reach a consensus, a certificate is given based on what the group decides. Most of the times the producers are at the mercy of the censor board. If a producer has any objection, he can approach a revision committee, which consists mostly of filmmakers. Visuals or dialogues which might hurt the religious sentiments or spark communal tensions are deleted without a second thought. Apart from this, portrayal of nudity, sex, smoking, drinking, homosexuality and graphic violence is still a taboo. In 1994 Sekhar Kapoor had to approach the Supreme Court to get his film Bandit Queen released after the censor board and revision committee refused to clear it. Anurag Kashyap’s debut film Paanch couldn’t get a censor certificate due to its disturbing content. In recent times, Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Aaranya Kaandam ran into trouble with the regional censor board which suggested 52 cuts apart from giving an A certificate. Producers of films like Satyam Sivam Sundaram, Black Friday, Fire, Pyar Ka Punchanama and Kissa Kursi Ka were refused a certificate due to various reasons including political blasphemy, nudity and use of expletives. The emergence of new age filmmakers like Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj, Bala, Ameer, Sasikumar is proving to be quite a challenge for the censor board. However, the censor board in Mumbai is a little more lenient with expletives and nudity in Hindi films. Ever since the government decided to discourage people from smoking and drinking, every film where characters smoke or drink, a statutory warning is flashed. There are severe restrictions on everything which might be remotely offensive to any group, thereby stifling the creative freedom. There have been talks to revamp the Cinematograph Act and also to introduce new system of censorship, but till then, how free is freedom of speech will continue to burn inside the minds of filmmakers.

Andhra Pradesh also set to grow in the sector, which has contributed 14.4 per cent to country’s overall IT exports to be the fourth largest IT exporter in the country. The IT and ITeS sector has been a major growth driver for the economic development of the State, by contributing 38 per cent of overall exports of the State and creating a direct and indirect employee base, attracting talents to migrate to Hyderabad, said V Rajanna, president, The IT & ITeS Industry Association of AP (ITsAP). Not only the sector gave an employment to 2.7 lakh people in the State, but also gave an indirect employment to more than 8 lakh people. Today, a car driver (regular employee) of an IT company, earns `3.5 -4 lakh per annum, which is equivalent to the salary of fresh graduate who starts his career in the sector, he said. Globalisation is an unavoidable phenomenon. As long as we continue to provide services at lower cost with quality, India would remain to be the favoured destination in the world. However, it is also important to increase the domestic services by decreasing dependence of exports. Embattled Australian flag carrier Qantas said Monday it will axe 500 jobs in its heavy maintenance and engineering operations as part of a restructuring to help slash costs. The move follows an 83 per cent slump in first-half net profit in the six months to December and an announcement it would delay the delivery of two A380 superjumbos by three years as part of spending cuts. In the reorganisation, Qantas will cease heavy maintenance at Tullamarine in Melbourne by August, with work being consolidated in Avalon.

BJP reviving Keshu to thwart Modi? GANDHINAGAR:
Former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel seems to be returning to active politics after almost five years in political exile. And this has set tongues wagging in the state’s political circles. Some analysts feel that bringing in Patel may the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) way of quietly taking on its arrogant Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has been defying its leadership in more ways than one. Patel, one of the founders of the party in Gujarat, had been virtually sidelined since the 2007 assembly elections. But a surprise invitation from the BJP to Patel to attend the party’s upcoming national executive meeting in Mumbai has led to considerable speculation. Patel has not said whether he will go to Mumbai. Some see his silence as part of his wait and watch strategy. He is waiting for Narendra Modi to make his next move. If Modi attends the Mumbai meet, Patel may skip it. Although considered one of its most charismatic leaders, Modi has been having increasing prob-
lems with the BJP leadership. Annoyed with the party for accommodating his bête noire Sanjay Joshi in the national executive, Modi did not attend the last executive meeting. He also didn’t campaign in this year’s state elections. BJP’s former minister of state Gordhan Zadaphia is hinting this may well be true. Zadaphia told IANS that the invitation to Keshubhai could mean that Modi’s “political isolation has begun in the party”. Very few buy this, but Zadaphia’s statement cannot be dismissed if one looks at developments taking shape in the state. In recent times, Patel has blasted the Modi government and even alleged that the whole of Gujarat was living in fear. Without naming Modi, Patel alleged that there was no execution of government programmes, and what Gujarat was witnessing was just publicity.
Patel has addressed a number of social and community programmes in the last three months but the party has neither stopped him nor taken any action for criticising the BJP’s own government. In contrast, only five years back, Patel was stopped from attending the Patel community’s functions. According to political analyst Hemant Shah, the Patels in Gujarat are unhappy with the Modi regime. In the March Mansa assembly by-election, a constituency dominated by upper caste Patels, the Congress defeated the BJP after 17 long years. A fortnight ago, barely 5,000 Patels attended a meeting where Modi was present. But just three months back, Keshubhai Patel addressed a massive Patel gathering at Sidsar of Rajkot district. Both in Gujarat and nationally, Modi has run into foes who would like to clip his wings. IANS
Benevolent president ‘saves’ 27 lives NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil has commuted the death sentence of a domestic help, who had murdered a retired Brigadier and his two family members in Dehradun, to life imprisonment. The Supreme Court, while sending Om Prakash to the gallows, had observed that “he is a menace to the society and it seems to us that the death sentence is the most appropriate punishment in this case”. The fact that Prakash was young when he committed the crime was rejected by the apex court, which noted, “the crime shocks the conscience of the society at large and of the court and the facts and circumstances unfolded in the case leave the court with an irresistible feeling that he is beyond reformation though young he is.” Patil, however, found it a fit case to be pardoned and issued orders in this regard on April 29, making Prakash the 27th case during her tenure to get mercy, according to an RTI
P
resident APJ Abdul Kalam decided only two mercy petitions — in 2004, he rejected the plea of rape convict Dhananjoy Chatterjee, and in 2006 he commuted convict Kheraj Ram's death penalty to life imprisonment. President KR Narayanan did not clear any mercy petition. During her tenure, Patil, has rejected the petitions of five persons, which include Rajiv Gandhi’s three killers — Santham, Murugan and Arivu; Khalistan militant Devinder Pal Singh, convicted in the ‘93 Delhi car bombing and Mahendra Nath Das of Assam who had murdered a truck drivers association leader. Patil has emerged as the most “merciful” of all presidents during the last three decades as she had commuted death sentences of 27 petitioners to life imprisonment, which is over 90 per cent of the total pardons granted since 1981. Prakash, who worked as a domestic help in the house of retired Brigadier Shyam Lal Khanna in Vasant Vihar locality, had killed Khanna, his son Sarit and his sister-in-law Bishna Mathur in 1994. PTI
Mumbai street vendor to speak at Rio Mauli Buch
MUMBAI:
Vegetable vendor Salma fights for the rights of the city’s street vendors and has been jailed many times. Now the 26year-old is going to an international conference in Brazil to speak about Indian domestic workers, labourers and hawkers. Salma, whose full name is Anis Fatima Shaikh, started selling vegetables from the age of seven even as she continued to study till Class 12 as a private student, and one day she took up the cause of the street vendors after she was harassed by government officials. “I then started to gather legal
information about the rights of hawkers (street vendors) and labourers. I then helped other hawkers fight for their rights,” said Salma, a leader of the Azad Hawkers Union, a part of the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI). “I have been imprisoned on a few occasions and when I read the names of the freedom fighters on the walls of the jail, I got inspired to fight for my cause,” she said. Salma will be attending the May 21-24 Global Network Conference in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. “Sixty participants from 20 countries will be at the confer-
ence. It will bring together people from trade unions, labour and human rights activists from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Arab countries and Europe,” Salma told IANS in fluent English. The Global Network is an alliance of labour organisations, established in 2001 by Solidar, a European network of NGOs working for social justice, and the International Federation of Workers’ Education Associations from South Africa. “NASVI is associated with Global Network and suggested my name for the conference,” she said. She will be the lone Indian representative in the conference
on ‘The Role of Labour Movement in Shaping the International Cooperation Agenda after 2015’. She is however not new to international conferences, having flown to Nairobi in Kenya to speak on child street vendors at the World Social Forum six years ago. The second of three sisters and two brothers, Salma had to drop out of school at the age of seven to help her parents sell vegetables. “But I never gave up studies. I kept studying through notes and books of other children. Two years back, I appeared for my Class 10 exams privately and last month I passed my Class 12 exams,” she said. IANS

CAMERON OUT OF LOOP ON GROWTH–AUSTERITY DEBATE LONDON, UK: When the leaders of the G8 get together around the dinner table at Camp David this weekend, I hope the protocol chiefs will be seating British Prime Minister David Cameron well away from German Chancellor Angela Merkel. War is brewing between the two nations over the euro-zone crisis, if the British press is to be believed. “George Osborne: Angela Merkel damaging UK economic interests,” read one headline in The Daily Telegraph this week. “Germans must abolish themselves,” said a photo caption accompanying Ambrose EvansPritchard’s Daily Telegraph blog post detailing the trillions it will cost Germany and France to pay for a Greek euro-zone exit and how that event will ruin the British economy. This week at Prime Minister’s Question Time, Sir Peter Tapsell, the Tory of Tories, asked Cameron, “Does my right hon. Friend suppose that Chancellor Merkel now regrets that she did not take the advice he gave her last October about the big bazooka? If she had fired it then, that would have spared the European Union from its present crisis.” Cameron replied, “I cannot give a direct answer to that, [no, he couldn’t, there is this little thing
Demonstrators burn an EU flag near the EU offices in Athens during a protest against harsh austerity measures. called diplomacy] but I can say that the euro zone has to make a choice. If it wants to continue as it is then it has to build a proper firewall and take steps to secure the weakest members of the euro zone, or it will have to work out that it has to go in a different direction. It either has to make up or it is looking at a potential break-up. That is the choice that has to be made, and it cannot long be put off.” Much of this heat comes from frustration. The truth is, Britain has no say in what happens over on the other side of the Channel.
AFP
Not just because it is not part of the euro zone, but because last December at a crisis summit to create a fiscal compact among euro-zone nations that was hoped would calm the markets, Cameron decided to re-open negotiations on a couple of trade issues relating to protecting the City of London’s dominance in global finance. These issues were not particularly relevant at a moment when the crisis threatened to destroy not just the euro, but the EU and the entire global economy. Inappropriate would be a polite word to describe

Cameron’s actions. In the end 26 of the 27 EU nations signed up to the compact which commits them to reducing their budget deficits to 3.5 per cent of GDP. Britain refused to sign. Since then Britain’s overwhelmingly Conservative supporting press has trained its guns on Berlin and Merkel’s austerity mantra. What would be funny, if it weren’t sad, is the hypocrisy of it all. Cameron and his Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, are the English-speaking world’s poster boys for austerity policy. They have already set Britain the same 3.5 per cent target for deficit reduction as the EU agreed last December. So what’s the problem? Well, as commentators of a Keynesian stripe have been saying for some time now: We can’t all be doing austerity at the same time, otherwise who’s going to buy from whom? In Britain’s case, its largest trading partner is the EU, and if the EU is doing austerity then what happens to British prospects for growth? No prize for knowing the answer: British growth prospects go in the toilet. Trade with the EU is off by 5 per cent. Britain is now experiencing a double-dip recession. GLOBALPOST
‘Pink Panther’ faces trial TOKYO: A Montenegrin member of the “Pink Panther” gang of international thieves has been sent home for trial over the $3.6 million robbery of a Tokyo jewellery shop, Japanese police said Sunday. In the June 2007 heist in the upmarket Ginza district, Radovan Jelusic and another Montenegrin man sprayed tear gas at three saleswomen in the store and stole a tiara, necklaces and other jewels worth 284 million yen. Jelusic, 41, wanted by Interpol over the crime, was arrested in Italy in 2010 in connection with a separate robbery and was transferred to Montenegro on Friday, a Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) spokesman said. “The suspect is scheduled to face trial in Montenegro as Japan has asked the Montenegrin authorities to punish him on its behalf,” the official told AFP. Jelusic has been charged by the MPD with robbery causing injury. His accomplice, Rifat Hadziahmetovic, was arrested in Cyprus in 2009 in connection with another heist in Spain, to where he was transferred.
18 killed as Yemen army battles Qaeda SYDNEY: Australian marine pilots Monday called for a review of how ships pass by the Great Barrier Reef, warning of the risk of a major environmental disaster on the tourist attraction. Australian Reef Pilots, a firm with a century of experience in the region, raised its concerns after a Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier broke down near the reef on Friday and drifted disabled for more than a day before it was secured. The company wants to see shipping routes restricted and the area where vessels must use pilots extended, moves which could prompt strong objections from foreign vessels accustomed to free passage. “This is a second incident in about the last month where we’ve had a ship drifting outside the Great Barrier Reef but drifting towards it,” Australian Reef Pilots chief executive Simon Meyjes told AFP. “The biggest problem there is that they are in very deep water, they can’t drop anchor to
stop themselves drifting so they either have to fix their own problem or wait for help to come.” Meyjes said in the latest incident, involving the 186-metre, 45,000 tonne bulk carrier ID Integrity, it took close to 48 hours for tugs to reach and secure the vessel as it drifted in the Coral Sea. The ship broke down north of the Queensland city of Cairns on Friday en route from Shanghai, and floated completely disabled near the world’s biggest coral reef, narrowly missing grounding on the Shark Reef. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority emergency tow vessel Pacific Responder reached the bulk carrier late Sunday to connect a line and was pulling it towards Townsville on Monday. But Meyjes said the potential disaster could have been dealt with more quickly if all ships were forced to travel in the shipping lanes inside the reef, rather than on the outer edge of the coral and towards open sea. Show of Nato unity over unpopular Afghan war Laurent Thomet
CHICAGO: US President Barack Obama and Nato allies put up a united front Sunday to persuade a war-weary public that the Afghan conflict will end in two years, as President Hamid Karzai vowed Afghanistan will no longer be a “burden.” Leaders of the 28 Nato nations stood in solemn silence as a bugler’s lament recalled the heavy cost of a conflict that has killed over 3,000 coalition soldiers, maimed thousands more and left tens of thousands of Afghans dead. As anti-war protesters clashed with police near the Chicago summit site, the two-day talks aimed to endorse a withdrawal strategy and seek firm commitments from allies to train and bankroll Afghan forces. Before the summit Obama held talks with Karzai, three weeks after his dramatic trip to Kabul where the two leaders inked a security pact for going forward after the last 130,000 international troops withdraw in late 2014. “We’re confident that we are

AFP on the right track, and what this Nato summit reflects is that the world is behind the strategy that we’ve laid out,” said Obama, who faces a tough re-election in November. But in a sign of growing impatience within the alliance, new French President Francois Hollande refused to back down
from his decision to pull troops out in 2012. “I told everyone I spoke with that this was not negotiable because it was a question of French sovereignty and everyone understood,” he said, adding France would continue to train Afghan forces after 2012. Karzai said his country no
Nato activates missile shield, reaches out to Russia CHICAGO: Nato leaders launched Sunday the first phase of a US-led missile shield for Europe and sought to appease Russian anger over the system by renewing an invitation to cooperate. President Barack Obama and his allies declared an “interim capability” at a Chicago summit, putting a US warship carrying interceptors in the Mediterranean and a Turkey-based radar system under Nato command.
The alliance insists that the shield is not aimed at Russia and aims to knock out missiles that could be launched by enemies. “We have invited Russia to cooperate on missile defence and this invitation still stands,” Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said. “We will continue our dialogue with Russia and I hope that at a certain stage Russia will realise that it is in our common interest to cooperate on
missile defence,” he said. Stressing that Nato must be able to defend itself against missile threats, Rasmussen said the move “cannot be blocked by Russia, it’s a NATO decision.” In a threat reminiscent of the Cold War, Russia has warned it may respond to the Nato system by stationing short-range Iskander missiles in its Kaliningrad exclave near Poland, a EU and Nato member state.
longer wanted to be a “burden,” urging the international community to complete a security transition to his Afghan forces. “Afghanistan... is looking forward to an end to this war and a transformational decade in which Afghanistan will be working further for institution building and the development of sound governance,” he said. Along with reaffirming the 2014 deadline, the summit is expected to back Obama’s plan to cede the lead in combat missions to Afghan troops next year, while making a commitment to securing $4 billion annually for Afghan forces. A Western official told AFP Sunday that nations with troops in Afghanistan had pledged roughly $1 billion to bankroll Afghan forces after 2014. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s attendance at the summit had raised hopes his government was ready to lift a blockade on Nato convoys, but talks on reopening the routes have stumbled over Islamabad’s demand to charge steep fees for trucks crossing the border. Zardari and leaders from some 30 nations and international organisations will join the 28 Nato allies for Monday’s second day of talks. In a sign of the waning appetite for further conflict, Rasmussen said the western defence alliance “has no intention to intervene” in Syria despite concern at the bloodshed there. “We strongly condemn the behaviour of the Syrian forces and their crackdowns on the Syrian population and we urge the leadership to accommodate the legitimate aspirations of the people,” he said. ^cm
Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, dies at 62 LONDON: Robin Gibb, whose soaring vocals formed part of the unique Bee Gees sound, has died at the age of 62, leaving Barry as the sole surviving member from the band. The high-pitched close harmonies, sharp songwriting and disco-defining sound of elder brother Barry, Robin and his twin brother Maurice made them one of the biggest-selling groups of all time. Robin lost his battle against cancer of the colon and the liver on Sunday, a month after confounding doctors by emerging from a coma after pneumonia.
He underwent surgery in August 2010 for a blocked intestine — the same condition that killed Maurice in 2003 — but a tumour was found and he was diagnosed with cancer. The singer looked gaunt in his last few months as he struggled against the disease. Andy Gibb, their younger brother who was not in the Bee Gees, died in 1988 from cocaine addiction. “I sometimes wonder if all the tragedies my family has suffered — like Andy and Maurice dying so young and everything that’s happened to me recently — is a kind of
karmic price we are paying for all the fame and fortune we’ve had,” he told The Sun in March. Incidentally, the singer and his wife-to-be Molly Hullis survived the 1967 Hither Green rail crash in southeast London that killed 49 people. “I know what it is to live through a mass disaster... it haunts me to this day.” Robin mostly sang lead in the 1960s, while Barry’s falsetto took the foreground in their 1970s disco period. He is survived by his second wife Dwina and three children. Gibb married Hullis in 1968 and divorced in 1980. ^cm

INDEFENSIBLE!
Talk back Solved in quick time It is a ritual to honour anybody and everybody with awards to appease either a party, individual or simply because there is provision and it is the done thing. The policeman who gave this simple but brilliant idea of bugging two suspects till they confessed surely deserves recognition by way of an award and citation. The innovative idea, in fact, can be replicated in other situations too. We are sick of reading about policemen torturing suspects to bring out the truth. This is welcome. Niti Sudhan Safilguda
Heinous criminals People who mess around with children are the pits. They ought to be shunned from the society. I know what the victim of child sexual abuse goes through. And it is not that the female gender is the target all the time. In fact studies have revealed that small boys are victims to this atrocious behaviour of perverts more than girls. And invariably the child begins to feel guilty about the whole thing, which traumatises the child for a lifetime. Marauding on innocent children is the most heinous of crimes, and it is no one but the perpetrator whose mistake it is. Jagdish Shetty Nampally

THE HUMAN ANGLE Babu Gogineni

ndia’s Defence Minister AK Antony’s recent answer in Parliament confirms what the 2012 report of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed a couple of months ago: India is now the world’s largest importer of arms, accounting for 10% of all conventional weapon and ammunition purchases. Following India are South Korea (6%), Pakistan (5%), China (5%) and Singapore (4%) — these five countries together account for a 30% share of the global conventional arms imports, while Asia and Oceania put together will raise this figure to 44%. The implications of these statistics are serious since the global conventional arms trade is worth an annual $60 billion, and it has risen by 24% over the last 5 years (2007 – 2011) because of growing militarisation in Asia. Globally, the top five exporters of conventional arms are the United States, Russia, Germany, France, and Britain. Interestingly, following development of its domestic arms industry, China is now the world’s sixth largest exporter of weapons in the world. What an irony it is of international politics that the five permanent members of the United Nation’s Security Council are also the world’s top arms exporters! Is it possible for countries to promote peace and security in the world while they are at the same time merchants of death, trading in arms in rapacious pursuit of profits? It is not, and the Tony Blair government’s spurious ethical foreign policy is a good example. Tony Blair spoke of resolving the cycle of poverty and war in Africa which he called a blight on the world’s conscience. But this did not stop his government from selling to Tanzania a $40 million military air traffic system, even if that impoverished country had only 8 military aircraft. In 2002 when India and Pakistan were engaged in fairly aggressive nuclear posturing, Tony Blair visited India and Pakistan, expressing the hope that Britain could have a ‘calming influence’ in the region. In that trip his government sold India 60 Hawk jets worth $1.6 billion even though it was clear that this sale would threaten regional stability. Blair’s government scuttled an inquiry into corruption allegations against British

arms manufacturer BAE, citing ‘national interest’. It is quite possible to point out another irony — how could India, whose Father of the Nation is considered the prophet of non-violence, be the world’s largest importer of arms? An estimated `24,475 crore was spent during 2010-11 for defence imports. The latest projections are that over the next 10 years an estimated $100 billion would be spent by India on arms, and some 30 % of that would be allocated for imports. Defence manufacturers around the world are licking their lips in anticipation. Analysts have pointed out that this level of defence spending is necessary for India. There are 7,000 kilometres of sea coast, 314,400 square kilometres of territorial seas and 14000 kilometres of land borders to be guarded. India shares land borders with six countries, two of whom she has had major wars with. Both these neighbours, Pakistan and China, have high defence spending too, so deterrence is the only way forward. But the insane doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is now outdated and increasing numbers of the world’s citizens are asking for a new thinking that will base foreign policy not on military might but cooperative relations, more people to people contact and respect for human rights.
THIS WON’T DO, CORPORATORS; you’ve been sent there to serve us
ighty lakh people of this city who pay to keep the GHMC and its paraphernalia intact are sadly let down by their elected representatives. The long-awaited general body meeting of the GHMC held on Saturday had to be adjourned due to lack of quorum, that is, 55 of the 220 members. The city has been facing numerous civic problems ranging from drinking water to pollution and yet when it came to getting to bass tack they bunked. It speaks volumes on the indifference of elected representatives that only five of 17 points on agenda could be discussed. And, these are the very people who lose no time berating officials for irresponsibility and neglect. The floor leaders of the party feel frustrated and they seem lacking the powers and will to keep the flock in control. Floor leaders of TDP, Congress, MIM and BJP support the idea that general body meeting could be made regular, once a month or at least once in two months. This would make the corporators get used to a drill; a drill that make them serve the public they have sworn to serve.
Relatively new democracies like India which are still developing countries need to get the priorities right. According to the multidimensional poverty index developed by Oxford University, there are more poor people in eight of the northern Indian states than in the 26 countries of sub-Saharan Africa. According to a study based on the multidimensional poverty index, the situation of Madhya Pradesh state in central India with 70 million inhabitants is not different from the desperate poverty of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). India and the DRC should do more to be proud members of the commonwealth of nations and to rank higher in the UN’s Human Development Index. An arms race diverts resources from that essential task of human development. It increases instability and because of the secretiveness of negotiations, provides ample scope for corruption. An arms race benefits only the defence manufacturer. Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu called the arms trade a new form of slavery whereas another Nobel laureate for Peace Oscar Arias Sanchez, declared “When a country decides to invest in arms, rather than in education, housing, the environment, and health services for its people, it is depriving a whole generation of its right to prosperity and happiness”.

WHAT NEXT? To join the ranks of the employed or to pursue higher studies — that is the most frustrating dilemmas of them all. We find you some answers Padmini Copparapu padmini.c@postnoon.com
F
rom the time she was enrolled in school as a five-year-old to this day, Anisha Rehmani has never stopped studying. Today, she is a 24-year-old with a BA (Honours) in English, a PG Diploma in Journalism, and an MA in Arts & Aesthetics. She has already enrolled for an M Phil programme in Art History and plans to follow it up with a PhD. A sure shot academician at best, or worst, someone with a chronic terror of entering the real world, it would seem. But hers is a rather simple explanation. She just wants to get “all the studying out of the way before starting work.” Anisha's might be an atypical case, but it brings into focus a much larger issue that plagues many students today. Reminiscent of the question that's repeatedly demanded of us upon graduation— what next? Study further, finish your education at the of risk specialising in a subject you might discover later holds no interest for you? Or return to college after working for a few years and risk putting a stopper in your career growth? The former is the best, says Vishnu
Sanjit, a Software Developer at Motorola who is going back to college after five years to pursue his MS. “After graduating from BITS Pilani, I planned to work for a while and then get into a B school, for which, work experience was required. But after putting in a few years at work, I've realised that telecom is my real area of interest. So I'm going to specialise in it. I wouldn't have realised this if I had gone straight to study,” he says. So would that be his advice as well? To work for a few years
and then take a call? “Absolutely, 2-3 years is ideal. It's the best way to find out if that's your true calling.” Making a compelling case for the necessity of work-experience is Mahiti Sinha, a mechanical engineer by education but a journalist by passion. “Most often, our choice of undergraduate study is defined by parental or peer pressure, uncertainty, job market or whatever is trending at the moment. Only, a few choose the course because they really want to make a career in it. By the end of the course, most are again at crossroads. You can go with the flow or actually test the waters in other fields to see where your aptitude lies. You can do that only by working. Otherwise, a by-pass to higher education means postponing the wisdom and most likely, ending up with a colossal waste of time, effort and money.” Post his graduation, and a few years of practice as a freelance photographer and filmmaker, Vivek Rao is headed to the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad for his Masters. He offers a rather interesting insight. Vivek says, “A lot of institutes abroad which focus on research oriented study want to know why a person who's already on the field and learning on the job needs to return
to college to study the same thing. The question is hard to answer, considering that most of us go back for a Masters mainly because, in India, it’s the minimum qualification, almost a societal requisite, if you are to consider your education complete. That said, I think two years of work experience is ideal before returning to college.” But what about hampering career growth? HR Manager Netra P dismisses it as a myth. “In two to three years, you just about learn the ropes. So it’s not like you are going to pass up on a senior management role. So that shouldn't be a concern. Instead, those years will give you perspective and reveal the realities of working life, and tell you a thing or two about the industry you are in. Moreover all that you studied till then is only theory, now you'll learn to apply them. So working for a while before pursuing higher studies will make all the difference.” The verdict seems unanimous. Getting a taste of the workings of the field you intend to make your career in is vital. It might even be the deciding factor in the course you will go on to specialise in. So, as tempting as it maybe, college might just have to wait a little longer.

AGE NO BAR Make them a part of the process
We associate many ailments with old age, but recent studies say that Hypertension is on the rise among the youth. It’s time to take care Anishaa Kumar anishaa.k@postnoon.com
A
s lifestyles start to change, a number of health issues have also started to crop up. This could vary from obesity to an increasing number of heart attacks in people as young as 24! Hypertension is one among the many problems that are being seen. A recent study by researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, found that nearly one in five young adults are suffering from high blood pressure which is also known as hypertension.
What is hypertension? According to Dr VK Bhargava, “Blood pressure or hypertension refers to the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The cut off point for hypertension varies depending on the age group. Hypertension can occur in anyone from a child to the elderly.” Talking about the cut off points, Dr Bhargava explains, “For people in the age group of 18 and above the normal level of blood pressure is 120/80. If the person’s BP is around 130-139 on the systolic scale and 85-89 on the diastolic scale than it is called pre-hypertension. If the BP reaches 140/90 then it is called hypertension.” According to Dr Shiv Kumar, chief of cardiology, Apollo Hospitals, Secunderabad, “Most
of the diagnosis for hypertension is incidental. Certain people may have no symptoms at all. Certain people do complain of palpitations, headaches and giddiness.” He adds, “There has been an increase in cases because of increase in awareness. More people are being diagnosed. But it is not right to say that it is the only cause for this new statistic. Lifestyle factors can also play an important role. The lifestyle factors such as growing obesity, food habits,
A RECENT STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, CHAPEL HILL, FOUND THAT NEARLY ONE IN FIVE YOUNG ADULTS ARE SUFFERING FROM HYPERTENSION.
lack of physical activity and stressful lifestyle also play a role in causing hypertension.” Dr Bhargava adds, “excessive salt consumption, alcoholism and use of drugs such as cocaine can also be a cause. This lifestyle factors causes what is known as essential hypertension. If hypertension is causes due to a certain ailment like kidney disease and endocrine disease, then it is known as secondary hypertension.” 90 per cent of the cases due to not have a secondary cause that can be treated for, says Dr Shiv Kumar.
Treatment Controlling your diet is an important aspect of treating hypertension apart from the regular medication. Dr Bhargava says, “If a person has been diagnosed with hypertension, they should reduce their salt intake, control their weight, avoid alcohol and indulge in physical exercise.” Apart from these dietary modifications, certain drugs may also be prescribed to the patient. “When it comes to medication, continued treatment is important. Dr Shiv Kumar says, “Optimal treatment is important. It will not be sufficient if the patient takes a single pill and if the blood pressure improves slightly, stops the pill. Till the target level BP is not reached, treatment should be taken.” According to Dr Shiv Kumar, a revolutionary treatment is in the offering wherein BP can be cured with the help of radio-frequency. If this succeeds it will definitely be a major step in curing BP forever.
Implications of high BP High blood pressure if not treated on time and appropriately
can have various implications such as stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, arterial disease and brain stroke. It is the basis for many ailments.
Prevention In order to prevent hypertension doctors suggest that one should control their salt intake, remain physically active and control their blood pressure. These precautions even if they cannot prevent may help postpone the start of the problem. Regular check-ups are also important as the symptoms of hypertension are not specific.
Awareness Talking about awareness in the youth about the need for checkups and prevention of hypertension, Dr Shiv Kumar says that although they are aware, they hardly bother. Dr Bhargava believes that the perception is changing. Many companies are sending their employees for pre-employment checkups and also during the course of the year. He mentions that master health checkups are also being undertaken in which BP is also checked.

I have a 13-year-old daughter and my husband and I want to have a second child. How can we make her a part of the whole process and minimise any jealousy or feeling of unwantedness from cropping up? Children who are raised as a single child often report wishing they had a sibling without realising the changes that sibling might bring. A child being born involves excitement and joy for the entire family and this is true for the sibling as well. As long as parents are able to give the older child the required love and attention and prepare the child, most children are able to navigate the adjustment of the newest family member. It is important to spend time preparing your child. Preparation depends on the age of the child, since younger children will process information differently than older children. With an adolescent, involving them in the process from the beginning can be hugely beneficial to them. When you talk to your child make sure you do it in a relaxed manner. If possible both parents should be present for the first conversation. Talk to your adolescent openly about your feelings and allow them to express their feelings about the issue. This does not mean that you have to decide against having a child if they are upset or unhappy. If they are unhappy, allowing them the time to absorb the information will help. When talking to them, be open, honest, respectful of their feelings. If they are happy and want to share their joy, allow them to do so. Talk to them about how they will feel about sharing your time and your affection. Once they are comfortable, allow them to be a part of the process like planning for the baby room, buying clothes, deciding a name etc. Constantly remind your child that while things will be changing , your love will stay constant. Allowing your child to feel a sense of control over certain things will go a long way in helping them adjust. (The writer is a counselling psychologist at the Hyderabad Academy of Psychology. involved athletes and pain, reported Men’s Fitness. The studies included athletes in various game sports as well as endurance and strength. The scientists were looking at both pain threshold — when pain begins to be felt — and pain tolerance — when pain begins to become unbearable, said WebMd. Athletes and non-Athletes were found to have similar thresholds for pain but the former had higher tolerance.
“Our analysis reveals that pain perception differs in athletes compared to normally active” people,” said study author Jonas Tesarz of the University of Heidelberg, according to Live Science. “Studies in athletes offer the opportunity for an evaluation of the physical and psychological effects of regular activity on pain perception, which might foster the development of effective types of exercise for relief in pain patients.”

lport syndrome results in progressive loss of kidney function. It is said to be the second most commonest inherited cause for kidney failure. Alport syndrome occurs when the type IV collagen is missing or is in scarcity. This collagen is usually found in most tissues especially those of the kidney, eye and inner ear. Symptoms for Alport syndrome include blood in the urine, high blood pressure. Kidney failure may develop only after the person enters adulthood. Treatment for Alport syndrome involves controlling the persons blood pressure and restricting the patient’s intake of salt, phosphate and protein. In serious cases, dialysis and kidney transplant may be required. A person suffering from alport syndrome is also at risk of developing progressive hearing loss and even certain abnormalities in the eye.

ing a prosthetic retina which can restore sight to patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the commonest causes of blindness. The thin silicon device acts by electrically stimulating neurons (nerve cells) in the retina, which are left relatively unscathed by the effects of AMD while other image capturing cells, known as photoreceptors, are lost. It requires no wires and would make surgical implantation simpler. Keith Mathieson, study coauthor and reader at the Institute of Photonics, University of Strathclyde, UK, said: “AMD is a huge medical challenge and, with an aging population, is continuing to grow. This means that innovative, practical solutions are essential if sight is to be restored to people around the world with the condition,” the journal Nature Photonics reports. "The current implants are very bulky, and the surgery to place the intraocular wiring for receiving, processing and power is difficult. With our device, the surgeon needs only to create a small pocket beneath the retina and then slip the photovoltaic cells inside it," said Jim Loudin Daniel Palanker, study co-author from the Stanford University. “The implant is thin and wireless and so is easier to implant. Since it receives information on the visual scene through an infrared beam projected through the eye, the device can take advantage of natural eye movements that play a crucial role in visual processing,” added Mathieson, according to a Strathclyde and Stanford statement. AMD results in a loss of vision in the centre of the visual field (the macula) because of damage to the retina. It occurs in dry and wet forms. This condition can make it difficult or impossible to read or recognise faces, although enough peripheral vision remains to allow other activities of daily life. IANS

The body fluids which include the blood and saliva of a healthy person are alkaline while those of an ill person are acidic. It is said that most forms of degenerative diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease can be attributed to a mineral deficiencies which inturn makes the body fluid acidic. Thus the various mineral and vitamin supplements that one takes helps in lowering the level of acidity and help you stay healthy.

had to say five pages of dialogues. Luckily, I learnt my lines and did the shot in a single take,” she says, adding, “I play a very soft and innocent girl’s character in the film. That reminds me this is the first time I am playing a role like this. Most of the times I end up playing glamorous roles in Telugu. It’s good that I don’t have a set image in Malayalam film industry.” Shraddha Das has just signed a three film deal in Hindi with a leading production house in Mumbai. “I can’t reveal the details anytime soon. You’ll have to wait till June for the official announcement,” she signs off.
arthi’s upcoming film Shakuni is finally gearing up for release after a long delay. Shankar Dayal has directed the film and Bellamkonda Suresh is producing the Telugu version of this film which is being touted as a political satire. “Shankar Dayal has etched my characterization in a different manner and he has done a great job in handling this subject,” Karthi said. The film was supposed to release back in January; however, it had to be pushed to June when an indefinite strike in Tamil film industry disrupted the shoot. Pranitha Subhash and Santhanam are playing important roles in the film. The film’s audio is going to be launched on June 1 in Shilpakala Vedika, Hyderabad and Bellamkonda Suresh is planning to release the film in the third week of June.

The glamour behind the glitz
Success more dangerous than failure: Shahid Kapoor Uma Ramasubramanian
I
n his almost a decade-old Bollywood career, Shahid Kapoor has gone through a lot of personal and professional ups and downs. But despite as many as six back-toback box office disappointments behind him, he is undeterred because he feels success can do more harm than failure. “Success can be more dangerous than failure. When you are successful, you feel that you are doing everything right. So, failure can teach you a lot. I just believe in ‘Go out and do your best,’” Shahid told IANS. After Vishal Bharadwaj’s hit film Kaminey in which he featured in a double role opposite Priyanka Chopra, Shahid was seen in Dil Bole Hadippa!, Chance Pe Dance, Paathshaala, Badmaash Company, Milenge Milenge and Mausam. Alas, none of them generated good business. Now he will once again be seen with Priyanka, his rumoured former girlfriend, in Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani. He is hopeful their chemistry will work for the film, which he says is diametrically different from Kaminey. “I think the audience really liked me and her (Priyanka) in ‘Kaminey’. It’s always fun working
with her. This film is very much different from ‘Kaminey’ and nothing will look similar,” he said. At first, Shahid thought Teri Meri Kahaani, which depicts a love story in three different eras, was about reincarnation. But the director put his doubts to rest. “One day over coffee, Kunal
“I think the audience really liked me and Priyanka in ‘Kaminey’. But this film is very different from ‘Kaminey’ and nothing will look similar” said he had an idea which he really loved, but it was not developed. It was just a one-line story. He told me it would be an entertaining love story with the same two actors in three different time periods,” Shahid said. “I, however, had reservations about doing a reincarnation film. Kunal assured me that it would be a romantic comedy. I found that interesting. I was not skeptical before signing the film because it’s a very simple film. It’s not compli-
cated at all,” he added. Out of the three eras, Shahid personally enjoyed playing the character of a Muslim boy named Javed. “When Kunal said we are starting from the 1910s, I told him: ‘It’s so boring, the pre-independence era is like going back to history class.’ Kunal briefed me about the character and said he is the most misbehaved character of that era. “His name is Javed and his only job is to pick up women. I really enjoyed playing Javed’s version,” Shahid said. Teri Meri Kahaani will release June 22. During the film’s shooting, reports indicated that Shahid and Priyanka shared a cold war on the sets. But Shahid says he remains unaffected with such speculations. “I don’t deal with these situations. I just let them go. Just ignore this news and move on. These reports don’t bother me,” he said. But asked about his favourite female co-star from a bouquet as diverse as Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Amrita Rao, Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan, he responded: “Do you think I will answer this question? Not for million bucks!” “My funda is never choose between women,” Shahid said as he flashed his dimpled smile. IANS

inger Adam Levine says it’s annoying when audiences mistake his confidence for a big ego. Levine, the vocalist of band Maroon 5, insists fame hasn’t changed him. “I’m still the same. I’m stubborn, combative, rambunctious, confident. My confidence is often misunderstood for egotistical. It’s usually just people who are jealous of self-confidence who say that.” femalefirst.co.uk quoted singer as saying. Maroon 5’s latest album Overexposed includes the current hit Payphone, featuring Wiz Khalifa. The band has also collaborated with pop princess and fellow The Voice judge Christina Aguilera on the smash hit Moves Like Jagger.
good work. “I like professional actors who show up, do the job and are not a pain in the a** to either myself or the crew,” she added. “I don’t believe in this idea that if you’re f**ked up... that’s the only way to do good work. It’s bulls**t. A professional actor does their homework beforehand and they do their job. Then when it’s all said and done, they have a beer with the crew. That’s what a professional actor does,” said the 36-year-old.

KAKURO
How to play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

T
he sound of drums greeted one and all who attended the Super Seven cricket tournament held at the Lal Bahadur Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The two day tournament for coffee shops which had sixteen teams participate, saw Toss clinch the title when they defeated rivals Racers Edge by 23 runs. Taking first strike, Toss seemed like they could put up a defendable totally. But the fall of wickets regularly gave one and all the impression that they would end up on the losing side until Man of the Match, D. Ashrith’s willow saw the ball being hammered all over the field. He was well supported by teammate Saketh who scored 32 in 11 deliveries. Ashrith’s blistering 37 from 14 balls saw his team post a total of 91 in their stipulated six overs. Not only did he contribute with the bat, he bowled a brilliant final over too. “The minute I saw my teammate, Vamshi Ram, get run out because of an error from my side, I knew that something had to be done — I had to make my side win,” said Ashrith. Skipper, Samuel Rasori, was all praise for his team and Ashrith. “We were considered as
the underdogs here but we played as a team and Ashrith’s performance in the final helped us sail through.” There were many tense moments in the game but it was not just the finals which had
everyone on the edge of their seats. The semifinals and quarterfinals had their own set of surprises. Ciao, who were touted as tournament favourites, lost to Testa Rosa in the semifinals while Toss, who were considered
the underdogs, performed brilliantly to emerge title winners. Also, there were a few players who performed exceptionally well claiming hat-tricks and few others received praise for their batting skills. The tournament saw its fair share of spectators come and watch the matches. Like the players, they seemed to have high adrenal levels, cheering every single ball which crossed the boundary rope as well as every wicket that fell. The drummers enjoyed the matches too hitting the drums with all their might during every moment of cheer. A special mention has to be made for the umpires, who braved the scorching sun and gave the best possible decisions on the field. The scorer too needs to be given credit who managed to keep a proper track of the scores, ignoring all the distractions present in the stadium. The tournament was certainly a success and the fact that there are more upcoming events like the Super Seven cricket tournament, speaks for itself. According to one of the organisers, Karan Bhangay, June will witness a tournament between real estates firms while July will have the same for nightclubs. With tournaments of this kind being held once in a while, the cricket scene in the city is sure to grow by leaps and bounds.

WUHAN, CHINA: Superstar Lin Dan (above) was made to sweat in front of an adoring home crowd but China breezed through their first group ties in the Thomas and Uber Cups world team championships on Sunday. Quality was on show from Denmark, Japan and South Korea, but it was England’s Rajiv Ouseph who threatened to spring a major surprise, before “Super” Dan, badminton’s most-decorated player, came through in two games. World number 19 Ouseph pushed the reigning Olympic
champion in an unexpectedly tight match, as the usually cool Lin let off sparks of surprise and frustration when a handful of smashes went into the net and wide. “After starting well I broke my racket string and it took me too long to adjust to the new racket. It affected the attack game plan,” Lin said, praising Ouseph’s performance. “All the matches here are equally important before the Olympics,” Lin added, underscoring the significance of this week in Wuhan, as players have a dress rehearsal before meeting each other on the big stage in July in London.
Lin’s teammates, including feisty world number three Chen Long, had an easier time as they beat the plucky English 5-0 and rapidly turned their attentions to Indonesia, who China face next in their group and a key rival. “Indonesia is China’s biggest opponent in the Thomas Cup,” Lin said. “It doesn’t matter who I play. I take them all seriously,” he said about Indonesia’s choice to select Simon Santoso over Olympic gold medallist Taufik Hidayat as first singles player. In the day’s earlier session, Denmark and South Korea also looked impressive contenders for
Gebrselassie wins Manchester Run MANCHESTER: Ethiopian running star Haile Gebrselassie won the Great Manchester Run on Sunday in the fastest 10 kilometres time of the year. The 39-year-old clocked 27min 39sec to claim his fifth victory on the streets of Manchester and then turned his attention to booking his place at his fifth Olympic Games. The Ethiopian missed out on a place in the marathon at London 2012, but has his sights on competing at this summer’s London Olympics
over 10,000m. Gebrselassie, double Olympic and four-time world 10,000m champion, will run over the distance in Hengelo, the Netherlands, next Sunday in a race which will double as the Ethiopian Olympic trials, with the top three set to be selected for the team. “I am so happy today, everything was perfect,” he said. “I am not surprised to run that fast. I wanted to run under 27 minutes. “According to my training
this year, I feel I can run faster on the track. I want to go under 27 minutes, that’s what I am thinking. If I run this fast on the road, why not on the track? “The top three in Hengelo go to the Olympics, that’s what the federation said. “At the moment if I get in the top three I go. My question is, what is the possibility in London? We’ll see.” In the women’s race, Kenya’s Linet Masai, the former world 10,000m champion, took victory in 31min 35sec.
a tournament neither country has won yet. The Danish men, finalists eight times, were never troubled by South Africa in their 5-0 win and were well led by 35-yearold Peter Gade, who hopes to silence critics after this season’s poor run of results. The toughest match in South Korea’s 5-0 victory over the USA came in the first doubles tie as Yoo Yeon-Seong and Ko SungHyun beat Howard Bach and Olympic medallist Tony Gunawan in three close games. In the women’s competition, the Uber Cup, China are also seeded first and the team demolished South Africa 5-0.
LONDON: Some 12,500 British officers will be deployed daily during the Olympic Games in the country’s largest ever preplanned policing operation, the Metropolitan force said Monday. With 67 days to go until the event begins, police revealed that 52 forces from around Britain will provide officers for the operation, which will run from June 4 until September 16, after the close of the Paralympic Games. There will be around 12,500 officers on duty during peak days with 9,500 operating in London, according to a statement released by police. Specialist officers trained in search techniques, marine, public order and firearms will be on call along with the mounted sections, dog units and motorcycle escorts. “Every force is playing its part in delivering a fantastic summer of celebration,” said National Olympic Security Coordinator Chris Allison. “The summer of 2012 will be a busy and challenging time for the British police service, but with confidence and pride I can say we have the officers we need to keep the Games and our wider communities safe and secure,” he added. A security force of more than 40,000 people, backed by a huge intelligence operation, is to guard the Games — which start on July 27 — at a cost of £553 million ($877 million, 662 million euros). Some 13,500 of the security personnel will be from the Ministry of Defence and armed forces, working alongside police and more than 16,000 private security guards and unpaid volunteers. Security chiefs are believed to be preparing for a range of threats including a “lone wolf” terrorist, riots or cyber-attacks.

The weight of history hangs heavy, as supporters pine for Polish football’s comefrom-nowhere glory days of Olympic gold in 1972, third place in the 1974 World Cup, Olympic silver in 1976 and a further World Cup third in 1982. Poland manager Franciszek Smuda is keenly aware that the home crowd wants his generation of players to repeat the feats of forebears. “Of course there’s pressure. There has to be pressure. There’d be pressure whether the tournament was in our country or another country,” he said. “Every fan has demands on this team, just like I do. I’m sure we’re going to deal with this,” he added. He has warned against betting on a new era, however, as Poland brace to kick off Euro 2012 against Group A rivals Greece on June 8, then face Russia and the Czech Republic. “Our goal is to clear our group,” said Smuda, acknowledging that Euro 2008 semi-finalists Russia look the favourites. “But we’re playing at home, so we’ll give our all.” Smuda, who took the helm in October 2009 after a flunked World Cup qualifying campaign, has pulled few surPoland will have a hard time clearing this group. But if Lewandowski can score and Szczesny can keep clean sheets, then the home support could see them through. Big if though.
prises in naming his 26-man squad, due to be trimmed to the official 23 on May 27. Nineteen play in foreign leagues. Among his biggest names are Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, while the sharp end of his strike force is Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski, nicknamed “Lewangoalski”, who is the Bundesliga’s top scorer this season. Lewandowski forms part of a trio of Poles at Dortmund, with midfielder Kuba Blaszczykowski, who regularly sports the Poland captain’s armband, and defender Lukasz Piszczek both on Smuda’s list. Like fellow hosts Ukraine, Poland have an automatic berth at Euro 2012. They have had to rely on friendlies to hone their skills and will have gone 968 days without a competitive match by the time Euro 2012 kicks off.

POLAND GROUP A At a glance FIFA World Cup semi-finalists in 1974 and 1982 Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker’s side exited after the group stage, as they had at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, and their bid to reach South Africa two years ago ended when they finished fifth in their six-team qualifying group. It is all a far cry from their heyday of the 1970s and early 1980s. Yet with a squad including many players not even born then some positive friendly results could ensue.

WARSAW: Robert Lewandowski (below) is at the top of his game and will carry Poland’s hopes at the sharp end of their Euro 2012 attack on home turf. After a hat-trick in Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund’s 5-2 rout of league runners up Bayern Munich in the German Cup final — their first domestic double — the Pole is on a roll. “I can’t find words to describe what’s happened,” he posted on his Facebook profile. “It’s fantastic, amazing, superb!" But following an inspired season that saw him voted Poland’s player of the year, Lewandowski’s feet are firmly back on the ground. “The Euro’s looming, and that’s my number one target," he told the daily Gazeta Wyborcza. As fans hope the unheralded Poles will repeat the feats of the iconic 1970s and 1980s World Cup generation, the striker is squarely in the spotlight. “Lewandowski: Our greatest Euro hope,” headlined the newspaper Polska, while the tabloid Fakt asked “Will Lewandowski win the Euro for us?” — despite the fact that pundits say qualifying from the group stage will be success enough. In June 2010 he signed a four-year deal with Dortmund for a Polish record fee of 4.5 million euros. The website transfermarkt.de now values him at 15 million. He found the Bundesliga net 22 times this season. In 40 appearances, he has scored 13 times, albeit mostly in friendlies after Poland flunked their 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

Unclear about role JAIPUR: With Rajasthan Royals ousted from IPL’s playoff contention, skipper Rahul Dravid says he is not sure about his role in the side and would take a break to think over before making any commitment. Talking to media after the humiliating 10-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians, Dravid, who had bid adieu to Test cricket, said it was disappointing to lose in such a fashion. “I really don’t know. I will have to think over. I would take a break and decide about my role. I will talk to my family and also the management of the Rajasthan Royals about my role and then I would decide. My goal is to develop young players,” Dravid said. “We have youngsters like Ashok Menaria, Ajit Chandila, Ankit Chavan and Gajendra Singh. I am sorry about the local lad Gajendra Singh who is a fine bowler but couldn’t get a chance to play,” he
added. “It was a pleasure to lead the side and the support from the management and support staff has been top notch. As far as my own performance is concerned I played my role as the opener with Ajinkya Rahane to satisfaction. I feel batting is one thing and scoring runs is another thing.” Dravid said the side now needs a youngster in the opening slot. “We need a young and talented player who could open the innings with Rahane. He might be with some other franchise but we would try and rope him for the next season. We also have god players hopefully we would make it to the play offs next year,” Dravid said. Reflecting on Rajasthan’s campaign in the event, Dravid said losing close games hurt the team. “We had lost a few close games like the ones against Delhi, Deccan and Chennai and that hurt us.” PTI

Roach blasts Windies back into Test Julian Guyer
LONDON: Kemar Roach stunned England with a dramatic late burst to give West Indies hope of an improbable victory in the first Test at Lord’s on Sunday. Roach took two wickets for seven runs in eight balls, including England captain, and first innings century-maker, Andrew Strauss, to leave the hosts 10 for two at the close of the fourth day. England will need a further 181 runs
to reach their seemingly modest victory target of 191 on Monday’s final day in the first of this three-Test series. That West Indies — who started the day 35 runs adrift and in danger of an innings defeat — were still in the game owed much to Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s second marathon effort of the match. Chanderpaul, officially the world’s best batsman, made 91 in a total of 345 that followed his first innings 87 not out. The Guyana left-hander batted for 10

ROME: Maria Sharapova won her second straight Rome title on Sunday, defeating China’s Li Na 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/5), in a match full of momentum shifts, a lengthy rain delay, and noisy distractions from football fans. A frustrating day at the sodden Foro Italico ended in anger as spectators tossed plastic water bottles onto the court after the high-profile men’s final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was postponed until Monday. The weather was mainly responsible and the decision was only made after heated discussions between the tournament and the ATP, some conducted on the court after the women’s event ended. But another reason for postponing the men’s final was due to worries over security, with thousands of foot-
ball fans in the vicinity of the Foro Italico. Officials and police were wary of tennis fans mixing with rival football supporters heading to Sunday night’s Italian Cup final between Juventus and Napoli at the Olympic Stadium, just a few hundred metres away. World number two Sharapova claimed her 26th career trophy, but it was a struggle for the Russian, who found herself 6-4, 4-0 down before the players were forced off by rain for over two hours just as the final set tie-break was about to commence. “It was a crazy match,” said Sharapova. “Either one of us could have won it. It was really difficult with so many swings. It was tough having to wait two hours. It’s difficult to have a loser and a winner, but I’m happy. It’s great to beat someone with the level she played last year.”
LeBron’s the star as Miami burns Indiana INDIANAPOLIS: LeBron James (right) finished with 40 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists and Dwyane Wade had 30 points as the Miami Heat beat the Indiana Pacers 101-93 to level their series at 2-2. Wade also had nine rebounds and six assists for the Heat, which rebounded from an embarrassing 94-75 loss in game three in which Wade didn’t hit his first shot until the third quarter. But Wade and James were back on the mark Sunday and they now head home to Miami for game five of the Eastern Conference series on Tuesday, where they will try to take a 3-2 series lead. James and Wade scored 48of-50 points for the Miami in the time between the end of the second quarter and the early part of the fourth. “They’ve been through quite a few battles,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of James and Wade. “We went through quite a bit last year. All the series we went through were highlycompetitive, so they under-
Polish fairytale crashes down Jonathan Fowler
NIECIECZA, POLAND: It had all the makings of fairytale, with a Polish village’s team on course for the top flight, until they came crashing down to earth in a tight season-end race in the Euro 2012 host nation. Hailing from a community of just 726 in southern Poland, and playing in a stadium tucked among cornfields on the River Dunajec floodplain, minnows Termalica Bruk-Bet Nieciecza won hearts this season as they came to within an inch of glory. But in the space of just two weeks, they found their fate out of their hands as they suffered a run of four defeats, with Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Kolejarz Stroze denying them promotion.
Along the way, however, the motley crew of career-enders from Poland’s Ekstraklasa top flight, younger players squeezed out of that division and those tapped
hours and 24 minutes in this match, scoring 178 runs for once out while facing 425 balls — a mammoth effort even by the 37-year-old’s high standards. If the tourists maintain their accuracy, and overhead conditions assist swing bowling, the West Indies — who came into this match having won just two of their previous 30 Tests — could yet claim a stunning success. Chanderpaul, downplaying his own effort, said he was looking forward to some final day fireworks.
from the lower leagues claimed the scalps of big city sides. Manager Dusan Radolsky was unfazed by the failure to earn an unprecedented berth in Poland’s
16-club first division, putting his side’s run into perspective. “This club has made a massive leap over the past six or seven years,” the 61-year-old Slovak told AFP. “How many teams do you know who have climbed so far in Polish football history? That’s a success in itself. It’s been a case of promotion, promotion and promotion again,” said Radolsky, who has a long coaching record in Slovakia and Poland. The club is known by the more manageable name of Termalica, a wing of its overall sponsor, concrete company Bruk-Bet which is based in Nieciecza and first got involved a decade ago. “Bruk-Bet’s a local firm, and wanted to do something for its community,” club spokesman Andrzej Mizera, 35, told AFP.
stand with one of our main components out that they have to step up.” Miami is still smarting from the loss of forward Chris Bosh, who went down in game one with a lower abdominal strain and isn’t expected to be available for the series. Miami won three of the four from Indiana in the regular season. The only other playoff meeting between the Pacers and Heat was eight years ago in the East semi-finals with Indiana winning in six games.
