Refinery comes under cloud U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: With the pompous signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by the State government with Amerind Petroleum Private Limited to relocate a petroleum refinery project at a cost of Rs 11,136 crore coming under cloud, the government authorities began playing it safe and the company is putting out a strong defence. The State government signed an MoU in the presence of Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on November 17 for the establishment of the refinery in the PCPIR (Petro Chemical and Petroleum Investment Region) between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada. However, environmentalist and former government of India secretary EAS Sarma raised a bogey against the proposed deal doubting the credentials of the company and its antecedents in oil refinery. They sought to know as to why there was no bidding while awarding such a huge project. They also asserted that it could cause huge pollution in the region. A closed unit from America is being shifted to Andhra Pradesh and APIIC

is involved in the project. However, principal secretary of industries TS Appa Rao said that the government had not given any land so far. Asked if the project was fake, he asserted that no decision was taken so far and the government would not give any land. He said that the government did not announce the allotment of land either. He pointed out that the company sought 700 acres for the project. Promoter Syed Badruddin said, “This is very common in India. People start talking

against anything that is coming up. I am not taking a single pie from India. The US government and EXIM bank are financing this project. Why will they agree, if it is not a viable project? Some people, without verifying the facts, are talking whatever they want.” “It is a working plant. There will be no pollution from this industry. I am assuring you. If the government here cannot provide the land, I will take it at the market price. There is nothing to worry about. It is a good plant. We will be able to relocate it. There is no doubt

about it,” he added. He went on to explain, “If I have to set up a new plant, it will cost me around Rs 16,000 crore which is expensive. But relocation will be cheaper.” As soon as the deal was announced, doubts were raised on the credibility, as some questions could not be answered. The minister for Major Industries J Geeta Reddy had to wind up the press meet saying that they had enough questions. The State government tried to showcase the project as one if its largest catch on the industrial front. It was announced that the project could provide employment to 55,000 people directly. The authorities claimed that the project would contribute over Rs 15,544 crore annually by way of excise, sales tax, state surcharge to the State and Central governments. Out of this, sales tax and state surcharge payable to the state government works out to more than Rs 7,122 crore annually. The project, in its second phase, will be expanded to a total refining capacity of 15 million tonnes per annum along with an additional project of petro chemicals complex costing Rs 8,611 crore.

AP’s no show at R-Day parade Postnoon News

W

hile the Telangana issue had put paid to Andhra Pradesh’s representation in the last year’s Republic Day parade at New Delhi, even this year the State failed to get a chance to participate in the Republic day celebrations at Delhi on January 26, 2012. According to sources, the panel of experts rejected the options given by the State representatives again. The State government had submitted four themes to be represented at the Republic Day parade. One of them highlighted and focussed for the selections was Sankranthi celebrations. Sources in the State information and public relations department told Postnoon that this year also they could not qualify for the R-Day parade. They are hopeful that they

may get a call in December for the second meeting. A panel of experts rejected the AP tableau citing the reasons that it did not represent the culture of the entire State. Some of the officers involved in this programme opined that there was no proper lobbying from our side. Last year the government had submitted four themes for the Republic Day parade:

Charminar, Bonalu, Ghusadi dance by Gond tribals of Adilabad and Etikoppaka dance from Vishakapatnam. This year the panel opined that it was not representative of the general culture of the State. Although no reason was mentioned in the refusal, sources in New Delhi told the State government informally that the Centre did not want to

add to the heightened tension in the State. In 2010, Lambada was the subject sent by the State, however, was rejected by the panel. According to some sources, the issue was not up to the standard, while others said it was rejected because the entry was published after the deadline. AP in 2009 presented the Annamayya theme and it was dubbed as Reflection and representation of the Rayalaseema region. Trying to downplay its disappointment, State government sources said the Stateentry was rejected perhaps because there is no representation from AP in the selection and screening committee. “Big fabrication contractors influence these committees in order to boost their business. If the State had a representative in the committee, it could have got us the representation,” opined one of the officials from Andhra.

The interns had put up various stalls representing their respective countries. There were stalls that included global cuisines that were decorated with posters. They gave out souvenirs to the people who had come to the event. They interacted with the people explaining their cultural exchange experience all the while painting people’s faces with their country’s flag. Other events also included international games, quiz competitions and global music. The core aim of the event was to promote cultural sensitivity and awareness about different countries amidst the four thousand people that attended the event. “We have students from Egypt, Russia, Poland, Indonesia, Afghanistan and many more. This was an amazing platform for a two way interaction between these 20 international students and Indian students and in some cases parents too,” says Sakina Hamza, vice president, Aiesec Deccan.

Colourful culmination T

he 17th International Children's Film Festival came to a close on Sunday with a colourful valedictory ceremony. Iranian film Alafzar bagged the 'Golden Elephant' for the best feature film in the international category. Among Indian films, it was Chillar Party that walked away with the honours. About 1,75,000 children across the country and the world watched films, attended workshops and interacted with filmmakers.

It’s raining media meets at Secretariat T Postnoon News

he media lounge located in front of C Block (Chief Minister's block) at the State Secretariat has turned into a studio these days. Apart from the Ministers, MPs and MLAs who come to meet the CM, and even chota netas, too barge into the lounge and start waxing eloquently about their meeting. Interestingly, in some instances the groups who have come to the C block to deliver a memorandum to the office of the CM too “address the media” as if they discussed the matter with the CM in detail! For the record, it was Kiran

Kumar Reddy who, as Speaker, removed the media point from the Assembly lobby as it had turned into a governmentbashing spot. According to norms, one should be at least an MLA to address the media in front of the C block. Or there should be suffi-

cient reasons such as leaders who discussed a public interest matter with the CM wanted to explain it to the media. But there exist no rules today. Anybody walks in and ask the cameraman to switch on and start firing. The situation has become so ridiculous

that some ministers who have chambers and conference halls to address the media also use the lounge for the purpose. There is also an attractive financial consideration for this culture to develop. The host gets air space or print space all for free. There is another media spot where non-working journalists gather. It is also used as a passage to enter the D block . Some newspapers and a TV are also arranged here where some retired journalists spend their time. There are instances where some of them stay late in the night also. Some of them are seen relaxing and also sleeping here from time to time.

Forever Yours Forevermark has always been associated with uniqueness and quality. Their newly launched Millemoi Collection celebrates the many layers that make up a woman’s story

Sana Mirza sana.m@postnoon.com

“B

uying diamonds is an investment and Fo r e v e r m a r k guarantees you some of the best, most unique designs of timeless diamond pieces,” informs Costantino Papadimitriou, head of design and innovation for Forevermark. “These are the world’s most carefully selected ones, bearing a unique inscription each at its heart, which is a promise that the diamond has been carefully selected to meet standards of quality and integrity. The individual number identifies it always to be uniquely yours,” he says. Forevermark works with experts who are passionate about diamonds and commit-

ted to shaping it from the moment the diamond is discovered to the moment it is first worn. Costantino Papadimitriou is the man behind the product design and development of the ‘Big Idea’ programme which was conceived to drive demand for Forevermark diamonds around the world. Describing the recently launched Millemoi Collection, he said that the collection has been designed to encapsulate all the dimensions of a woman, all the layers that make up a woman’s story. “Diamonds are special, just like the women who wear them. Every woman plays different roles all through her life. Each diamond in the Millemoi collection is a depiction of a woman’s varied characteristics. The collection is just another addition to make her

celebration more special,” he explains. The Millemoi collection consists of earrings, pendants, bracelets and rings which are unique and make a perfect gift for the woman you love. “With our Millemoi collection, we have aspired to be timeless with each piece as diamonds are and have always been an expensive investment. We refrain from being trendy as jewellery should not be in fashion but should last forever,” admits Costantino. “Each piece is simple and is free from chaos. From our tassels to our hoops, rings to bracelets, each piece has been exciting to design,” he adds. Being tight-lipped about their next collection, Costantino says that he is only too excited to work on their next collection. “With our next collection, which we will

launch in another six months or so, we are trying to incorporate contemporary as well as modern designs especially for the Indian market. Indians want to move away from the traditional jewellery and want to invest in something more modern, so that is why our future pieces will fill in that gap,” informs Costantino.

Hyper Local T-stir not against Seemandhra people, says Ramaiah HYDERABAD: MLC Chukka Ramaiah on Sunday made it clear that the ongoing Telangana agitation was not against the people of the Seemandhra region but only against the rulers of that region. Speaking at his ‘Vekuva Pilupulu’ book release function here, Ramaiah made it clear that he was always a Telangana activist and a Communist and he would continue to be so till his last breath. Senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya said that political leaders should follow Ramaiah’s foot-steps to serve the poor people. Telangana Praja Front chairman and noted balladeer Gaddar said that Ramaiah was spreading knowledge among the poor people, who were not getting it hitherto. Stating that the Telangana agitation was a democratic movement, he exuded confidence that the goal would materialise soon. CPI-M leader Y Venkateswarlu said that he was participating in the Telangana agitation to solve people’s problems. He said that Ramaiah was providing knowledge to the society with common language.

TDP to expose braggers The opposition party is determined to move a no-confidence motion against the Kiran governement in the Winter session Postnoon News

T

elugu Desham Party is determined to move a no-trust motion if not for defeating the Congress but for exposing the Opposition ranks who “make double-talks” against the government or Telangana. TDP senior leader Yerrannaidu yesterday lashed out at critics saying that some political leaders were speaking “shamelessly” on the futility of a no-confidence motion against the Kiran Kumar Reddy government. NTR Bhavan, Yerran said that his party would definitely table a no-confidence motion against the Kiran Kumar Reddy government in the ensuing winter session of Assembly slated to begin from December 1. Then the fact would come out as who were the real culprits and

traitors, he added. “It would be known whether those who were bragging that they would pull down the government would keep their word”. He also claimed that the Jagan group legislators were returning to the Congress party as they

were not able to organise agitations on the burning problems of the people. The TDP leader also alleged that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has lost control over the officials and his cabinet colleagues. In that case, what is the use of holding the much-trumpeted Rachchabanda programme when the applications received from the people were being thrown into dust bin, he asked. Pointing out that the Health Minister had openly admitted the failure of the government hospitals in the State, he charged that Kiran Kumar Reddy was the first CM, who imposed the highest taxes in the country. He also charged the CM with outshining even late chief minister YSR in squandering public money on his publicity blitzkrieg.

Telangana meted out gross injustice, says Harish Rao MEDAK: Senior TRS leader and Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao has said that the Telangana region was meted out gross injustice in the Jalayagnam programme. Speaking to mediapersons on Sunday, Harish alleged that the government was distributing worm-infested rice to the people under the muchtrumpeted Re one-a-kg programme and asked how the poor could consume such rotten rice. He also dismissed the new rice scheme as a farce by the Congress government. Alleging that the government was diverting the funds meant for the welfare of SCs and STs, he demanded that the government constitute a special board for their welfare. He also demanded that the State government take steps to establish Girijan University in the Telangana region. The TRS leader added that his party would extend support to the no-confidence motion if the TDP tabled it. He felt that if the Telangana ministers and Congress legislators of the region backed the notrust motion, the Centre would concede to a separate Telangana.

‘CBI is Cong pocket organisation’ T

HYDERABAD: BJP senior leader Bandaru Dattatreya has alleged that both the Central and State governments were adopting a lackadaisical attitude towards farmers’ problems despite severe drought prevailing in the State. Talking to the media on Sunday, the former Union minister said that over 800 mandals in the State were in the grip of a drought and farmers were wailing. Added to this, they were not getting remunerative prices for their produce, he lamented. Demanding an all-party meeting, Dattatreya said that the Kiran Kumar Reddy government should wake up from deep slumber. He also demanded that the government immediately release a Rs 1,000-crore package to help the farmers recover. He asked the government to announce compensation of Rs 20,000 for cotton and Rs 10,000 for paddy per acre. He also demanded that the crop loans be immediately scrapped.

DP chief N Chandrababu Naidu has alleged that the CBI has become a pocket organisation of the Congress party. Talking to the media on Sunday, Naidu demanded autonomous status to the Central investigating agency so that there would be no government pressures on it. Stating that only then justice would be done to the opponents of the ruling parties, he alleged that Congress was using the agency for harassing its political opponents. He reminded that it has been his long standing demand that CBI should be an autonomous agency. Naidu said that he visited Delhi to discuss farmers’ problems with national leaders. Delhi govt orders probe into blaze NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has ordered a thorough investigation into the fire incident in East Delhi in which 14 people were killed and 36 others suffered injuries. Health minister AK Walia said deputy commissioner (revenue) of East Delhi JP Sharma has been asked to investigate the incident and file a report to the government at the earliest. As many as 2,000 to 2,500 people were understood to have been present inside the community centre when the tent burst into flames, police said. The tents erected on the grounds of the community hall were completely gutted. As the fire spread, people ran helter-skelter searching for a safe area but many got trapped in the fire and lost their lives, police said. Officials said the chief minister has directed the health department to offer best medical treatment to those injured in the incident. Walia, himself a doctor, visited GTB hospital in East Delhi and personally

monitored the treatment of those injured in the blaze which engulfed a congregation of eunuchs at a community centre in Nand Nagri. Walia said 11 people were brought dead to the GTB hospital and 31 are now under treatment, out of which one is critical. He said as per preliminary report short circuit triggered the blaze. The enquiry committee has been specifically told to find out those responsible for the incident. A formal notification ordering the probe and compensation will be issued today. The approach road to the park was narrow, which hampered rescue operations as the big fire tenders could not reach the spot to fight the blaze. However, smaller fire tenders were able to get in and battle the flames. Fire department officials said the organisers had not taken permission from the department. The Delhi Police has registered a case against unknown persons for causing death due to negliIANS gence.

Powerful quake rocks northeast GUWAHATI: An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked India’s northeast, Myanmar and Bangladesh today morning, triggering panic among people. The tremor was felt at 8.47am in most parts of Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur, besides in Bangladesh and Myanmar. The epicentre was located in Myanmar,

about 130km east of Imphal, the website of US Geological Survey said. Seven northeastern states — Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur — are considered by seismologists to be the sixth most earthquake-prone belt in the world. IANS

Congress leadership weak: BJP NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley Sunday accused the Congress-led government of suffering from a leadership crisis and trying to malign the opposition. “This government has a leadership crisis, it has lost its credibility. It is the most corrupt government since Independence,” Jaitley, the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, said in his address at the Ramlila ground on the conclusion of party leader LK Advani’s Jan Chetna Yatra. “They are now trying to hide their corruption and malign the opposition for it. In cash-for-votes (scam), the judiciary and the people ask why the MPs,

who were whistle blowers, were arrested,” he said. Jaitley also questioned why fingers were being pointed at the telecom policy during the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) regime. “For 11 years, they had no problem with our telecom policy, but the government just wants to blame the opposition because they are guilty,” he said. The CBI, in an FIR Saturday, alleged irregularities in allocation of additional spectrum during late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan’s tenure as telecom minister. It claimed that the decision of granting additional spectrum caused a loss of Rs508 crore to the exchequer between IANS 2001 and 2007.

utted tents, slippers and other articles strewn all over — this was the scene at the community centre where 14 eunuchs lost their lives in a fire incident tonight. Loud cries of people, who lost their friends and loved ones, resonated the bylane in Nand Nagri after a major fire swept through the community hall leaving 14 dead and 40 others injured. The eunuchs, who converge here every year for their festival, were an agitated lot and vented their anger on media and even at fire and police personnel, who were involved in rescue operations. Hundreds of eunuchs, who were rescued from the blaze, were seated outside the venue and some were inconsolable as they lost their friends in the fire incident.

“What will I do now? I have lost everything... My close friend is no more. Who will support me now?” one rescued person, who did not want to be identified, said. The rescued eunuchs were sent to a nearby park with their belongings and arrangements had been made to provide them food. They were seen shouting and raising slogans. Despite requests by the authorities urging them to move to the park, they did not budge. The scene at the GTB hospital, where the injured were admitted following the incident, was almost the same with many of the eunuchs not allowing the media to photograph them. “What have you people got to do with it now? Our friends are dead.. go away,” said PTI one person.

UP Cabinet clears Maya’s divide and rule proposal LUCKNOW: In a move that Chief Minister Mayawati said was inspired by BR Ambedkar, the UP Cabinet on Tuesday decided to divide the state into four: Purvanchal, Pashchim Pradesh, Bundelkhand and Awadh Pradesh. While Mayawati had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue, her Cabinet took a formal decision to take it up as a resolution in the State Assembly during the Winter Session beginning today. “We will get a resolution passed by the Assembly to divide the state into four smaller states during the coming Winter Session,” Mayawati said at a press conference here. After the resolution was passed by the Assembly, it would be sent to the Central government that would be required to table it before Parliament where it would have to be passed, Mayawati said. Explaining the rationale behind the move, she added: “As we all know, UP is the country’s most populous State with the population shooting up to nearly 20 crore, which means that 16 per cent of the country’s population lives. It also has a gigantic area of 2,40,000 sq km and that is what makes it

Pranab dismisses Hazare’s recipe of right to recall, reject KOLKATA: Anna Hazare’s demand for right to recall elected representatives and reject candidates is not feasible in a huge country like India, Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said and claimed that the provision, if implemented, would only create political instability. Without taking Hazare’s name, Mukherjee said, “India is the largest functional democracy in the world with over 122 crore population and each Lok Sabha MP has an average electorate of 15 lakh. Under such circumstances, I do not know if such a demand is feasible.”

“If implemented, it will create political instability in the country,” he observed. Mukherjee was addressing a panchayati raj conference here organised by the West Bengal Pradesh Congress. Soon after he had ended his

12-day fast on the Lokpal issue, Hazare had said his fight would now be for the right to recall elected representatives and right to reject candidates as part of electoral reforms. Shakeel Ahmed, AICC general secretary in-charge of West Bengal, alleged in his speech that Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev were trying to divide the country. “In 1977, the same had been tried by making false allegations against Indira Gandhi and then again in 1989, the BJP had tried to divide the country over the Ram Janmabhumi Babri Masjid issue,” he claimed. unwieldy.” Only a division can solve the problems and remove the inherent imbalances, the chief minister said. “The move would fulfil the much-awaited aspirations of the people living in each of the regions that have suffered on account of neglect and apathy of successive governments — either led by the Congress or the BJP.” Accusing national governments of apathy towards her State, Mayawati said: “Even though UP had given the maximum number of prime minis-

ters to the country, none cared to do something concrete for appropriate development of the state.” She claimed that hers was the only government that had shown sincere interest in comprehensive development. “Soon after we came to power on our own strength in 2007, I not only wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking a special economic package of Rs80,000 crore for the development of the backward regions of Purvanchal and Bundelkhand but also met him personally — to no avail.” IANS

Early polls in UP? T he Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday reduced the duration of the Winter Session of the State Assembly, scheduled to start on Monday, fuelling rumours that the chief minister may dissolve the assembly and push for mid-term polls in the politically-crucial state. In an all party meeting on Sunday, parliamentary affairs minister Lalji Verma said the house will have two sittings in the Winter session, instead of

the earlier decided duration of over a week. The move comes close on the heels of the Samajwadi Party and the BJP mulling to move a no-confidence motion against the government. Shivpal Singh Yadav, leader of the Opposition and senior Samajwadi Party leader, said, “The CM may dissolve the House. But before she forces mid-term polls, we will try to prove that she is heading a minority government.”

Congress rubbishes Advani charge on black money NEW DELHI: The Congress on Sunday rubbished senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader LK Advani’s charge that the United Progressive Alliance government lacked the political will to bring back black money stashed abroad. “It is ironical those who did nothing to bring back black money despite being in power for six years are blaming the Congress-led UPA government which has done everything on the issue,” minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Shukla told reporters. Concluding his 40-day Jan Chetna Yarta against corrup-

Suu Kyi to stand for elections for the first time

Myanmar’s democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi delivers a speech during a ceremony to mark the 91st anniversary of National Day at the National League for Democracy party headquarters in Yangon on Saturday

YANGON: Myanmar’s democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi plans to run in upcoming byelections, her spokesman said on Monday, days after her party decided to rejoin the official political arena. The National League for Democracy’s (NLD) move on Friday to end its boycott of the political process came on the same day the military-dominated government received a seal of approval from Washington for a string of nascent reforms. “Daw Suu said she intends to take part in the election,” Nyan Win, spokesman for the NLD, told AFP. Daw is a term of

respect in Myanmar. Suu Kyi hinted that she would stand for office at a meeting of party delegates on Friday, when they decided to re-register as a political party and contest elections after boycotting last year’s vote — Myanmar’s first in 20 years. After speaking directly to Nobel laureate Suu Kyi for the first time, in a call from Air Force One, US President Barack Obama said Hillary Clinton would next month become the first US secretary of state to visit Myanmar for 50 years. Attending an Asian summit in Indonesia, Obama said

Clinton’s December 1-2 trip was designed to stoke ‘flickers’ of democratic reform in a country that for decades has been blighted by military rule and international isolation. The NLD won a landslide victory in polls in 1990 but the then-ruling junta never allowed the party to take power. Suu Kyi, although a figurehead for the campaign, was under house arrest at the time. Myanmar’s next election was not held until November last year, and the NLD boycotted it - mainly because of rules that would have forced it to expel imprisoned members. Suu Kyi

was again under house arrest. Although the election was widely criticised as a sham, Myanmar’s military rulers gave way to a nominally civilian administration which released Suu Kyi from years in detention and has since made a surprising series of conciliatory gestures. In developments Suu Kyi has described as encouraging, it has passed a law giving workers the right to strike, stopped work on an unpopular mega dam, released about 200 political prisoners and held direct talks with her. As a reward for such moves, Myanmar last week won Southeast Asia’s approval to chair the regional bloc in 2014 — despite some concerns that such a diplomatic prize was premature. UN chief Ban Ki-moon said on Saturday he would also visit Myanmar as soon as possible to encourage reforms. Analysts say the return of the NLD would add to the legitimacy of the army-backed government, which is seeking to end its global isolation — but would also increase the relevance of the popular but long-excluded Suu Kyi. After spending 15 of the past 22 years in detention, the 66year-old told her party on Friday that they should contest all the seats available in by-elections and had implied that she would run herself.

Pepper spraying California cops on leave WASHINGTON: After a video of two police officers pepper-spraying non-violent protesters at pointblank range sparked nationwide outrage, the University of California at Davis has placed them on administrative leave. Friday’s incident has led to calls for the resignation of University Chancellor Linda Katehi, who announced the action in a written statement on Sunday saying she shares the outrage of students and was deeply saddened by the use of the chemical irritant by campus police. Most of the protesters had their heads down as a campus police officer walked down the line, spraying them in their faces in a sweeping motion.

‘Lone wolf’ terror plotter arrested in NY NEW YORK: A ‘lone wolf’ Al Qaeda sympathiser who plotted to bomb police cars and postal facilities in Manhattan as also US soldiers was arrested as he was preparing to create working explosives, officials said. Jose Pimentel, 27, described as a ‘lone wolf’ with no ties to international groups, planned to carry out a one-man terror spree in retaliation for the US killing of Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in September, according to the Police Commissioner. His intended targets were US military personnel who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as US postal facilities and police in NY.

post of Obari, deep in the Sahara desert. A reporter aboard the flight approached the 39-year-old prisoner as he huddled on a bench at the rear of the growling, Soviet-era Antonov. The man who held court to the world’s media in the early months of the Arab Spring was now on a 90minute flight bound for the town of Zintan near Tripoli. He sat frowning, silent and seemingly lost in thought for part of the way, nursing his right hand, bandaged around the thumb and two fingers. At other times he chatted calmly with his captors and even posed for a picture.

IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT Gaddafi’s run had come to an end just a few hours earlier, at dead of night on a desert track, as he and a handful of trusted companions tried to thread their way through patrols of former rebel fighters intent on blocking their escape over the border. “At the beginning he was very scared. He thought we would kill him,” said Ahmed Ammar, one of the 15 fighters who captured Gaddafi. The fighters, from Zintan’s Khaled bin al-Waleed Brigade, intercepted the fugitives’ two 4x4 vehicles 40 miles out in the desert.

LOS ANGELES: Taylor Swift was the big winner on Sunday at the American Music Awards, taking three gongs including Artist of the Year, while Canadian teen sensation Justin Bieber left empty-handed. Bieber, who was last year’s big winner at the AMAs, sang a song from his Christmas-themed album ‘Under the Mistletoe,’ but failed to win in the only category in which he was shortlisted, for best pop/rock male artist. Other winners included Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Adele. Swift won best female artist and best album for ‘Speak Now’ in the country music category, while the best group went to Lady Antebellum, who won the prize last year and went on to become the big winners at this year’s Grammys. In the soul/R&B category, best female artist went to Beyonce — who sent her thanks by video message from New York, while Usher bagged best male artist. Rihanna, who also sent her regards by message, won soul/R&B best album for ‘Loud.’ Nicki Minaj meanwhile beat Lil Wayne and Kanye West to win best rap/hip-hop artist, her first AMA — and then quickly won her second, for best rap/hip-hop album for ‘Pink Friday.’ Best new artist went to Hot Chelle Rae, who have already had a hit with ‘Tonight Tonight’. On the Latin front, Jennifer Lopez took the top prize against a shortlist which also included Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias — and thanked everyone in English and Spanish. Californian girl Katy Perry, who performed dressed in pink strumming a pink guitar, seemed surprised when given a special award, for the first artist to have five number one singles from the same album.

Dollar inching towards MUMBAI: The Indian rupee was down by 44 paise at Rs 51.78 per US dollar in early trade today due to the pull-out of foreign capital from the equity market amid persistent dollar demand from banks and importers despite weakness of the American currency overseas. The rupee resumed lower at Rs 51.43/44 per dollar on the Interbank Foreign Exchange, as against its previous close of Rs 51.34/35 per dollar last week, and declined further to Rs 51.78 per dollar before quoting at Rs 51.73/74 per dollar at 1030 hours. The domestic currency moved in a range between Rs 51.43 and Rs 51.78 per dollar during morning deals.

In the Sydney market, the dollar lost ground against the yen and euro in early trade as investors’ tweaked their positions on global debt concerns and reports that US lawmakers will soon announce that negotiations on a deficit-reduction package have failed. The BSE benchmark Sensex tumbled by over 191 points in opening trade today as mounting worries about slowing growth and sluggish policy initiatives amid lingering uncertainty over the euro zone debt crisis prompted investors to reduce their exposure. The 30-share index, which has lost 1,198.02 points over the past seven sessions, fell further by 191.22 points, or 1.16 per

cent, to 16,180.29 in the first five minutes of trade on Monday. In a similar fashion, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index declined by 58.25 points, or 1.18 per cent,

to 4,847.55. Stocks of metal, refinery, auto, banking, consumer durable and realty companies remained under selling

pressure and were mainly responsible for the Sensex’s decline. The trading sentiment in the domestic market was bearish amid a weak trend in the Asia region driven by the deepening euro zone crisis, market analysts said. They said concern that a steep rise in the inflation rate might hurt economic growth, which has pulled down infrastructure and banking stocks in recent weeks, also contributed to the lower opening in the stock market. Meanwhile, in the Asia region, Japan’s Nikkei Index fell by 0.21 per cent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was down by 1.86 per cent in early trade on Monday.

Comprehensive agricultural policy sought

HYDERABAD: FICCI chairperson of Andhra Pradesh chapter Sangeetha Reddy said on Monday that there was a need for a definite policy on Agriculture. Sangeetha was talking at the Food Fest 360, an international conference-cum-exhibition on agribusiness and food processingorganised here. She felt that about 90 per cent of the agriculture produce was going waste as there were no proper storage facilities. She stressed the need for a holistic approach for the development of agriculture and also on the storage front. She pointed out that proper storage facilities would enhance revenue to the State. Chief Executive of ITC Agri business division Shiva kumar, Chairman of Nagarjuna Chemicals and Fertilisers K S Raju , Director-General of Icrisat Dr William Dar also participated in the meeting.

BSE proposes to widen investor base Postnoon News

HYDERABAD: Only two per cent of the Indian population is participating in the capital markets, while the remaining are shying away. Why? A typical Indian household’s balance sheet consists of investments into gold, real estate, fixed deposits, insurance and other things, if they have that investible extra money. But spend in stock markets don’t figure as a priority to them, according to Madhu Kannan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Addressing the first year students of management at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), here on Sunday he

MD and CEO of Bombay Stock Exchange Madhu Kannan interacted with students of IMT near Shamshabad said: “We need to look at costeffective entry barrier for more

brokers/members to enter BSE. Then only we can spread

investment culture in India.” More than 90 per cent of Indian population was interested in risk-free investment. They didn’t want to deploy their hard earned money in stock markets, whereas in USA, 90 per cent of population did invest in stocks. Indian economy was growing faster than ever before and several companies were starting their operations. The companies needed financial resources, which could come from equity markets. It was the dire need to connect people so that the exchange was a platform that would provide cost-effective solutions to raise funds. “We are more of retail in nature. The active investors who contribute and become part of the BSE come from only two

states—Gujarat and Maharashtra. So the reach of BSE should be much more. Kannan said that mobile phone penetration could be used for expanding the investor base of capital markets and the financial products needed to be distributed like FMCG. There was a need to create a financial infrastructure platform. He also emphasised the need for training in financial sector to open a lot of opportunities to young entrepreneurs. Fielding questions, he said time was not ripe for bringing in all 23 stock exchanges in the country under one umbrella. It might take another five years to happen, he said, and added that some of them were non-functional. It would cost at least Rs. 100 crore to establish a new exchange.

reg Norman’s International side started strongly as they looked to mount an unlikely comeback after heading into the final day’s singles trailing 139, but the Americans’ strength in the bottom half of the line-up ensured they clinched a fourth straight victory in the competition. Jim Furyk maintained his perfect record for the week with his fifth win by beating South African Ernie Els 4&3 before Woods, who opened his account in Saturday’s foursomes, claimed the clinching point with a 4&3 triumph over Australian Aaron Baddeley.

I was listening to this dude behind me [Stricker] giving me a putting tip about releasing the blade a little bit Woods, a controversial wild card pick by USA captain Fred Couples, was pleased with the way he played all week and credited teammate Steve Stricker for the improvement in his putting. “It does feel good,” the 14-time major champion said on Sky Sports 1 after his

victory. “I was hoping it wouldn’t come down to my point. I was hoping Stricks and I could take a victory lap back here but we didn’t get off to a good start early. “I was saying on the range it was going to come down to probably the last four matches and we needed to get our points so we went out there and played really well today. I played well all week. Unfor tunately I just didn’t make putts. I hit putts well but they weren’t going in over the first three days, the first four matches.” Asked where it had come good, he replied, “On the putting green. I was listening

They came here full of enthusiasm. “We did the right thing the way we loaded it up at the start of play and the guys stepped up to the plate. “I’m really proud of them for doing that. We really put a little bit of fear into the Americans. But the Americans had too much horsepower and putted really well.” EVENING STANDARD

They warmed up with a decent 3-1 win over Newcastle, which ended the Magpies’ unbeaten record and maintained their own advantage at the top of the Barclays Premier League. However, despite a couple of penalties from Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero either side of a Micah Richards

The rest is down to him and he is doing very well playing very well at home. If we want to win in Naples, we should play better than we did this afternoon.” Still, City came out on top by adding another three goals to

their impressive tally, with Balotelli and Aguero taking their seasonal tallies to eight and 11 respectively. It is a measure of Mancini’s new-found confidence in Balotelli that he allowed him to take City’s first penalty, after Ryan Taylor had handled Yaya Toure’s shot. “With the penalties, Mario is fabulous,” he said. “It is impossible that he misses. I don’t know why. He shoots very well. “Mario is a very important player for us. He is a great play-

Johnson seals Liverpool win

G

len Johnson scored a sensational late winner to earn Liverpool three vital Barclays Premier League points as his side recorded a 2-1 victory at his old club Chelsea. Former Blues full-back Johnson netted a brilliant solo effort to inflict his old side's third defeat in four league matches and leave both teams 12 points behind league leaders Manchester City. Each committed defensive errors to concede earlier goals, with Maxi Rodriguez giving Liverpool a half-time lead on his first league start of the season and substitute Daniel Sturridge equalising shortly after the break. With Chelsea's title bid threatening to unravel entirely, manager Andre Villas-Boas hauled off Mikel for Sturridge

at half-time and the substitution paid dividends in the 55th minute. Malouda was allowed to advance into the box and his cross-cum-shot was tapped home by Sturridge. A wonder-save from Jose Reina stopped Ivanovic glancing home Didier Drogba's freekick two minutes later as Chelsea continued to dominate. Liverpool visitors missed a great chance when Dirk Kuyt dragged wide after good work down the right from substitute Jordan Henderson before Johnson produced one of the goals of the season to win it three minutes from time. The full-back brought down Adam's pinpoint crossfield ball superbly, nutmegged Ashley Cole, and drove goalward before slotting into the corner.

alf-centuries from Usman Khawaja and Ricky Ponting combined with a six-wicket haul by debutant Pat Cummins gave Australia hope of winning the second Test against South Africa following an enthralling fourth day's play in Johannesburg. Khawaja (65) and former captain Ponting (54 not out) helped the tourists close on 142 for three in pursuit of 310 as Australia sought to make the highest successful run chase at the New Wanderers stadium and level up the two-match series at 1-1. Earlier, teenage paceman Cummins claimed impressive figures for six for 79 as South Africa were dismissed for 339 in their second innings following an eventful start to the day. The hosts started in a strong position on 229 for three. However, Australia tore into the home side early on and took four wickets for the addition of just 37 runs to haul themselves back into the contest.

KOLKATA: Odafa Okolie fired home a penalty as Mohun Bagan scraped past arch-rivals East Bengal 1-0 in an I-League match before a 90,000 strong crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday. The spotkick was awarded when Uga Opara brought down Sunil Chhetri inside the box, and Okolie made no mistake with the easiest of deadball situations. After six games, Mohun Bagan are now second with 15 points, while East Bengal stay on 10. East Bengal dearly missed the services of the suspended Tolgay Ozbey and their attacks lacked sting. The match was restricted to the midfield in the initial minutes, before East Bengal upfronter Alan Gow sent a short overhead ball to Robin Singh who laid it back for Alan, but the Scott got the yellow card for diving. In the 18th minute, Ukpara fumbled as he let the ball bounce to a free Sunil Chetri in the box. Ukpara tried to save the situation with sliding tackle which the referee judged improper and awarded a penalty to Bagan which proved productive. East Bengal started pounding the Mohun bagan goal with relentless moves, but the

green and maroon custodian saved a Sanjhu Pradhan attempt and some time later dived full length to thwart Robin Singh's effort. On the other side, Chhetri

missed a golden chance to kill the match in the 78th minute when he failed to tap in a Odafa pass with East Bengal shot-stopper Gurpreet Singh IANS at his mercy.

Power outage sabotage, say Bagan camp KOLKATA: Kolkata was shamed as a power failure led to a 19-minute blackout and disruption in the game under floodlight between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. The green-and-maroon brigade was leading by an Okolie Odafa strike before an over 90,000 crowd when the stadium suddenly plunged into darkness. The power supply was, however, restored after 19 minutes and the last few minutes of the

match played. Mohun Bagan Club, which organised the match, alleged sabotage. "Two days back, we had written to sports minister Madan Mitra expressing fears of sabotage. Our worst fears have come true. This must be probed. In future when we organise such matches, we will hold them outside Kolkata," said Bagan general secretary Anjan Mitra. The sports minister, however, ruled out any foul play.

Bopanna-Qureshi crash out at Valencia VALENCIA (SPAIN): India's Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan crashed out of Valencia Open following a straight set defeat at the hands of Marc Lopez and David Marrero. The IndoPak pair, seeded fourth, lost their quarterfinals 2-6, 4-6 to their Spanish unseeded rivals. Bopanna and Qureshi had plenty of chances but could not cash in on any. In all, they had seven breakpoints but could convert none. The Spaniards converted all three breakpoints they got. Bopanna and Qureshi are world number six in the team rankings at present and need to stay in the topeight to qualify in the season-ending World Tour Finals in London. Third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-7(6), 10-6 win over Czech Frantisek Cermak and Slovakia's Michal Mertinak. Fedex runs over Tsonga at Barclays

D

efending champion Roger Federer kicked off the singles action at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London with a 6-2, 26, 6-4 victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The fourth seed cruised through the opening set at a packed O2 Arena, but Tsonga hit back when Federer's level dropped in the second and the result looked in doubt until the Swiss star broke to edge a tight decider. Federer did not take long to move ahead, breaking in the fourth game. Tsonga benefited from a series of Federer errors in the third game of the second set to break. That gave the former Australian Open finalist the lift he needed and he began to play much better. His fearsome forehand was becoming a real feature of the match and he used it to great effect to force another break to move 5-2 ahead, before clinching the set when Federer netted a backhand. The Frenchman was the first to face a break point in the fifth game, which he saved with a pinpoint forehand, but the outcome remained on a knife-edge. An easy volley dumped into the net was followed by a double-fault, and when Federer creamed a winner down the line he had three match points, taking the second with a backhand placed neatly behind his opponent. Federer admitted his shock Wimbledon loss to Tsonga had been on his mind when the Frenchman began to turn things around in the second set.

Millionaire gives away fortune to charity, lives on $1,350 a month

K

arl Rabeder, the Austrian businessman who last year decided to give away his large fortune, because he realized money didn’t make him happy, now lives on just $1,350 a month. It was one of the most shocking headlines of 2010. Karl Rabeder a millionaire from Telfs, Austria, announced he was in the process of selling his luxury properties and businesses because he had realized money is counterproductive and actually prevented him from being happy. His goal was to ‘have nothing left, absolutely nothing’. Mr Rabeder, who came from a poor family where the rules were to work more and achieve material things, confessed that for a long time he believed more wealth automatically brings more happiness. But lately he kept hearing a voice telling him to stop what he was doing and begin his real life. He started to feel like a slave working for things he didn’t actually want or need. For a while he didn’t have the courage to give up all the wealth he and his family had become used to, but he finally made the big decision during a holiday in Hawaii. Karl and his wife spent all the money they could actually spend, but realized they hadn’t met a single real person throughout their stay. They felt like they were all actors; “the staff played the role of being friendly and the guests played the role of being important and nobody was real,” the

former businessman remembers thinking. He also experienced feelings of guilt on gliding trips over African and South American countries and says he began feeling like there was “a connection between our wealth and their poverty”. He suddenly realized that if he wasn’t going to give up his consumerist lifestyle then, he wouldn’t do it for the rest of his life. Rabeder raffled his beautiful Alpine home, selling 21,999 lottery tickets for 99 ($134) each, to people who hoped to once live in such a luxurious home, sold his vacation house in the Provence, his collection of gliders, an Audi A8, and the interior decoration business that helped him make his fortune. He set up an organization called MyMicroCredit, which helps people in third world countries, and transferred all the money in its accounts.

It’s hard to believe such masterpieces can be created without any tools, but Zhang Baohuang manages to do it by using just his fingers and palm prints. His unique painting style is characterized by a concise, lively style and a sense of reality, and is considered a combination of traditional Chinese painting and the structural features of Western painting. The Martian surface is incredibly hostile for life. The Red Planet’s thin atmosphere does little to shield the ground against radiation from the Sun and space. Harsh chemicals, like hydrogen peroxide, permeate the soil. Liquid water, a necessity for life, can’t exist for very long here — any that does not quickly evaporate in the diffuse air will soon freeze out in subzero temperatures common over much of the planet. It wasn’t always this way. There are signs that in the distant past, billions of years ago, Mars was a much more inviting place. Martian terrain is carved with channels that resemble dry riverbeds. Spacecraft sent to orbit Mars have identified patches of minerals that form only in the presence of liquid water. It appears that in its youth, Mars was a place that could have harboured life, with a thicker atmosphere warm enough for rain that formed lakes or even seas. Two new NASA missions, one that will roam the surface and another that will orbit the planet and dip briefly into its upper atmosphere, will try to discover what transformed

Mars. “The ultimate driver for these missions is the question, did Mars ever have life?” says Paul Mahaffy of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Md. “Did microbial life ever originate on Mars, and what happened to it as the planet changed? Did it just go extinct, or did it go underground, where it would be protected from space radiation and temperatures might be warm enough for liquid water?” The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission features Curiosity, the largest and most advanced rover ever sent to the Red Planet. The Curiosity rover bristles with multiple cameras and instru-

ments, including Goddard’s Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite. By looking for evidence of water, carbon, and other important building

Both MAVEN and Curiosity/SAM will determine the history of the Martian climate and atmosphere using multiple approaches blocks of life in the Martian soil and atmosphere, SAM will help discover whether Mars ever had the potential to support life. Scheduled to launch

in late November or December 2011, Curiosity will be delivered to Gale crater, a 96-milewide crater that contains a record of environmental changes in its sedimentary rock, in August 2012. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, scheduled to launch in late 2013, will orbit Mars and is devoted to understanding the Red Planet’s upper atmosphere. It will help determine what caused the Martian atmosphere — and water — to be lost to space, making the climate increasingly inhospitable for life. “Both MAVEN and Curiosity/SAM will determine

the history of the Martian climate and atmosphere using multiple approaches,” said MAVEN Principal Investigator Bruce Jakosky of the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. “Measurements of isotope ratios are an approach shared by both missions.” Isotopes are heavier versions of an element. For example, deuterium is a heavy version of hydrogen. Normally, two atoms of hydrogen join to an oxygen atom to make a water molecule, but sometimes the heavy (and rare) deuterium takes a hydrogen atom’s place. When water gets lofted into Mars’ upper atmosphere, solar radiation can break it apart into hydrogen (or deuterium) and oxygen. Hydrogen escapes faster because it is lighter than deuterium. Since the lighter version escapes more often, over time, the Martian atmosphere has less and less hydrogen compared to the amount of deuterium remaining. The Martian atmosphere therefore becomes richer and richer in deuterium. The MAVEN team will measure the amount of deuterium compared to the amount of hydrogen in Mars’ upper atmosphere, which is the planet’s present-day deuterium to hydrogen (D/H) ratio. They will then compare it to the ratio Mars had when it was young.

double dose of mom’s depression may do a baby good. Infants generally thrive physically and mentally if their mothers’ emotional condition, whether healthy or depressed, remains stable before and after birth, say psychologist Curt Sandman of the University of California, Irvine, and his colleagues. Kids whose mothers stayed depressed from the fourth month of pregnancy on displayed first-year mental and physical development compa-

rable to that of youngsters whose mothers stayed emotionally healthy for the same stretch, Sandman’s team will report in Psychological Science. In contrast, babies’ first-year physical and mental development lagged if their mothers’ emotional state during pregnancy changed after giving birth. That pattern held whether depression during pregnancy resolved after giving birth or depression first appeared after delivering a child. “A human foetus that prepares for inadequate care after birth based on biological mes-

sages from a depressed mother will have a survival advantage,” Sandman says. A foetus that gets thrown a caretaking curve upon leaving the womb — whether biologically primed to expect sufficient or deficient treatment — tends to struggle developmentally, at least for the first year, he suggests. Related investigations have found that people whose mothers nearly starved during pregnancy eventually developed higher rates of diabetes and other metabolic disorders if they received enough food after birth.

Holistic view of mind, body and soul

The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

Nature’s happiness hormones

Breast cancer and diet

What are endorphins?

Y

ou know that feeling you get when you have just completed a tough workout? Or that warm cosy feeling after you treat yourself to some of your favourite chocolate? Or even that glorious post-coital bliss? These are all examples of the effect that an endorphin release has on the body. Endorphins are hormones which have four key effects on body and mind: they enhance the immune system, relieve pain, reduce stress, and they postpone the ageing process. Endorphins vary in strength, from just 18 to 500 times as powerful as any man-made analgesic. And because they are naturally produced by the body, endorphins are possibly the best (and most legal way) to achieve a natural high. They are one reason why soldiers wounded in battle can continue to fight or have the strength to save someone else; it also accounts for the so called runner’s high, or why some people are drawn to dangerous activities like car racing, skydiving and bungee-jumping. Not every experience or feeling is the same for every person. Once the body’s nervous system triggers an endorphin release it does depend on the level of activity one is partaking in and the body’s need for it. As an example, one runner may have an endorphin rush (experienced as a second wind) after running for 10 minutes, while another may need to run for 30 minutes before feeling a second wind. Whether you work out for two minutes or two hours a day, you will experience the feelgood rush from an endorphin release to some degree. It doesn’t matter if you’re a yogi, gym bunny or a muscle Mary. Once you feel that natural high, you’ll want to feel more of it, more often. So what are you waiting for?

Endorphins are neurotransmitters that assist the body in handling pain, stress and emotional issues. Physical activity produces endorphins, which help people feel better during the activity and after the exercise is stopped. This can have a benefit for people suffering from mental disorders. Spending time in the sun, eating chocolates and eating spicy foods can release endorphins. In fact, they say the spicier the food the happier you can be!

Do patients with breast cancer need to follow a special diet? Almost all patients wonder if there is a special diet for those undergoing treatment or after completing treatment for breast cancer. There are many conflicting ideas and theories about diet and nutrition and this can be confusing, particularly when trying to understand all sorts of other information about breast cancer and its treatment. Most experts agree that a healthy diet should be balanced and varied providing all the right nutrients needed for good health.

Signs after treatment n Recovery from surgery: After

surgery, it is quite normal to miss a meal or two, which should not be a problem. Most people are able to start eating again the same day as surgery and appetite should build up over the following few days. Eating well will help the body recover and heal. n Appetite: Chemotherapy can affect appetite. It is quite normal not to feel like eating a normal diet. It helps to eat little and often rather than having a larger meal. Appetite should improve within a few days of treatment. n Nausea: Nausea and vomiting can be a problem for some people during and after chemotherapy. However, there are several types of anti-sickness drugs that can be prescribed. It is important to take frequent sips of water/coconut water/fresh juices. n Sore mouth: Chemotherapy can make the mouth sore or dry. Soft, moist foods such as soups and desserts can be easier to eat. Drinking with a straw can help by avoiding any sore areas in the mouth.

Trend Spotting

LITTLE FEATHER DRESSES:

A RED-CARPET HIT Forget the LBD: the perfect frock for this party season is flirty, fun — and feathery

W

ith socialite Olivia Palermo and actress Sienna Miller among its fans, the Little Feather Dress (LFD) is a red carpet hit, while avian-influences could be spotted at many of the fashion shows. Palermo — many a fashion-lover’s style crush — took a subtle approach for Paris Fashion Week last month, attending Giambattista Valli in a feather-trimmed patterned dress. A fortnight later, Miller wore a coral Matthew Williamson number with plenty of plumage for the Too Many Women gala dinner at Petersham Nurseries in Richmond. And for Halloween, Glee actress Lea Michele took the

look to the extreme, dressing as Natalie Portman’s ballerina from Black Swan in white feathers and a tutu. “The woman in a feather dress is confident in her fashion choices and exudes playfulness,” says designer Matthew Williamson, who has used feathers both in this season’s collection and next. “Feathers give fluidity and movement to a dress and I love the texture they can give to very simple shapes. They feel so decadent; they are reminiscent of the Twenties, a time of prosperity and luxe.” Another designer who has come out as a feather fan is Donatella Versace, whose yellow dress (swiftly snapped up

by Naomi Campbell) had more than a hint of Sesame Street’s Big Bird. For next season, there are ostrich feathers at Prabal Gurung, the new darling of the red carpet, and Oscar de la Renta sent rising star of the runway Lindsey Wixson down the catwalk in a blush feather maxi. Meanwhile, at LVMH, Kate Moss climbed off Marc Jacobs’s carousel to close the show in a feather-adorned mini-dress teamed with a tiara. But the LFD look — which is achievable for less at Topshop and online store Asos — can also be dressed down. At D&G, fluffy feather skirts in rainbow hues were paired with bright T-shirts

and wedge-heeled trainers for a more nonchalant take on the trend. Feather dresses are an early sign of the Twenties influence which is seeping into fashion ahead of the release of Baz Luhrmann’s film of The Great Gatsby. For the party scenes, the wardrobe of Carey Mulligan — who plays Daisy Buchanan — is expected to be particularly lust-worthy and will likely include feather-adorned flapper dresses. The Great Gatsby won’t be in cinemas until Christmas 2012 though, so the LFD could have longevity. Just try to erase Björk’s swan dress from your memory. Rosamund Urwin

Her older sister Usha is married to the son of MS Subbalakshmi, the great classical musician, which meant attending a lot of musical concerts together as a family. When asked about her childhood, Sadhana tells us, “I was the youngest, and my older sister Usha got married when I was just 6! And before I even grew up, all my brothers and sisters moved on to different places for their higher studies. So I was like the only child. But I am very close to my immediate older brother.” Sadhana is married to Dr KS Nayak, Director and Chief Nephrologist of the Department of Renal Sciences at the Lazarus Group of Hospitals. They have two children — Aditi, who is pursuing a research course in medicine in the USA, and son Akash, who is pursuing a dual degree from BITS Pilani. Sadhana’s profession as a Lifestyle Consultant is an interesting one. After her education in Kerala and Chennai, she got an admission into the Yale University to pursue her Business Administration. During the gap period before she left for the US, she decided to work in the Housekeeping department at the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. That was where she met her husband. She says, “I was in love before I knew it, and married two months after we decided to be together. We had two children, and I became the dutiful homemaker for a long time, tending to my husband and my childrens’ needs. And I still am proud to have done that.” After 12 years of being a home-maker, Sadhana once realised that even a simple task of climbing the stairs was becoming an ordeal. That is the simple formula that I have adopted.” At home, Sadhana ensures that the family has their dinner together. “My children are not here now, but when around, we make sure we spend quality time together. It’s difficult to sustain as a lead actress: Chhavi Mittal T elevision actress Chhavi Mittal, popularly known as Disha of TV show Tumhari Disha, admits it is difficult to keep getting lead roles in television shows. “It’s very difficult to sustain yourself as a main lead in the industry. I consider myself fortunate enough to still get the main leads. After working for so long, there is still freshness in me. I am exposed but not over-exposed,” she added. “There are very few actors in this industry who have done different roles with each new show and I consider myself lucky to be one of them. The journey has been very satisfying so

I have learnt that you can’t be moody all the time. I have grown as a person in this industry

far. I have always tried to do different kind of roles,” Chhavi told a website. After doing modeling and anchoring in the capital for five years, she shifted to Mumbai, where she did TV shows like Twinkle Beauty Parlour, Virasat, Grihasthi, Nagin and Bandini. She has also been part of reality shows and is currently seen in Zee TV’s ongoing music

show Star Ya Rockstar. She also says that “it is difficult to carve a niche in the industry because of the competition.” “There are so many newcomers. To carve a niche for yourself in the industry, you have to have it all - good looks, good performer, command over language. And your personality as a social figure has to be good -- if you are rude, you have no place for yourself. Moreover, your choice of roles is also important,” she added. The actress, who is married to TV director Mohit Husein, finds acting liberating. “There’s an actor in every human being and

there are different kind of moods. Since we live in a society where we are not able to show those moods to everyone, acting gives you a chance to express it,” said Chhavi, who was last seen in Sahara One’s Ek Chutki Aasman. “You get to play different characters where you can shout and you can laugh out loud. You get to do so many new things that we can’t do as a social animal, that’s a great liberating feeling,” she added. So Chhavi what have you learnt from the industry? “I have learnt that you can’t be moody all the time. I have grown as a person in this industry,” she said.IANS

Desi Boyz go from chic to distressed look

rom picking up stylish clothes from designer stores in London to stitching some customised garments, designers Shymali Arora and Kunal Rawal have handpicked garments for John Abraham and Akshay Kumar for Desi Boyz to make sure they gel with the characters and fit the situations. The action-comedy deals with how the life of two friends turns upside down when recession hits Britain and they are left with no choice but to strip and pole dance for a living. Hence it was a task for the designers to make sure they style two different looks of the lead actors. Arora has styled John, who plays a banker in the film, and admits his look has been inspired by Shia LaBeouf’s Wall Street look. “John plays a confident banker in the film who is a perfect guy and is about to get married. So it was necessary to dress him up in a way that he is comfortable in and that goes well with his character as well,” Arora said. Arora has also designed for John in Force and so for the corporate look, she has given him chic, stylish clothing. “I have given him suits with banker shirts. Banker shirts are the ones with white collar and white cuffs, which is accompanied by Oxford ties and pocket handkerchief that completes the corporate look,”

Streep donates film fee for charity

The Hollywood veteran plays Thatcher in new film The Iron Lady, which tells the story of Thatcher’s rise to power and her role as the country’s first female leader. The grapevine is abuzz with news that Streep didn’t make any money from the movie as she cut her usual salary to 625,000 pounds to make sure the project could go ahead and then donated the fee to a good cause, a website reported. PG Vinda is all set to make his directorial debut with The Lotus Pond. He talks about his journey and the twenty-yearold dream

In search of a Lotus Pond Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

I

t’s been more than twenty years since PG Vinda first dreamt about a lotus pond. He’s all set to make his directorial debut with the film The Lotus Pond which was screened at the recent 17th International Children’s Film Festival and it was also the only film made by a Telugu filmmaker, which was selected in the Indian Competition section of the film festival. Question him about the lotus pond which has been with him for so long. And he recollects the time when he was studying in a school in Beechupally, near Gadwal. “My school was near the banks of the river Krishna and every time I looked at the fields and the river from my classroom, I would end up dreaming a lot about the world outside my school. Back in school, I was a very good student and had also won several prizes for my

paintings. One day, I simply went off on an expedition without informing anyone and when I returned my teachers were really angry at me,” he recollects. It was when he was in his eighth standard that his Sanskrit teacher told him about a lotus pond which fascinated him. “My Sanskrit teacher told us about a lotus pond in Manasarovar and the way he explained it was so beautiful that I wanted to go see it myself,” he says quoting the exact words from the Sanskrit verse which roughly translates to “There is a beautiful place called Manasarovar deep in the Himalayas. The lotus in the pond are so beautiful that on a night with the full moon, they dwarf the beauty of the moon. So beautiful is this place that even the Gods and angels visit it.” In 1997, he joined the JNTU School of Fine Arts and took up photography as a specialization as he wanted to get into films. “When I was in my second year, I saw several children’s films at the 12th International Children’s Film Festival in Hyderabad and that is what inspired me to

make my own film. I have been dreaming about watching my own film at Lalitha Kala Thoranam,” he says. This is how his journey of making The Lotus Pond began. He had written a story based on his experiences when he was young and had then forgotten all about it. He went on to assist acclaimed cinematographer Madhu Ambat right after his graduation and began learning about the art of cinematography from him. After working with Madhu for a while, he borrowed Rs5,000 from his friends and went on a trek to the Himalayas, Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri. “I was scouting for loca-

tions for my film during the trek but I realised that those mountains were too big for the script I had written for The Lotus Pond. After I worked on films like Grahanam, Nandanvanam 120 kms, I worked on the sets of a travel show, Vihari as a cinematographer. During this time, we went to Kullu Manali and it was the perfect location to shoot the film. I met AL Nitin Kumar, who was directing the travel show, and told him about my idea of making a film. He liked it and we decided to make the film at a later point of time,” he informs. PG Vinda and AL Nitin Kumar finally put together a crew of about 45 people and

in the summer of 2009, they began shooting the film in a village named Sancher near Kullu-Manali. “It was very difficult to shoot at such high altitudes because we were trekking and shooting every single day for almost 35 days straight. We started from an altitude of 8,000ft and went up to 14,000ft. I must thank Aakash, Rohit, their parents and my entire crew and cast for their efforts because the credit goes to their spirit, which motivated me to make the film,” he says. The film has already been screened at the Banff Mountain Film Festival and the 17th International Children’s Film Festival. Vinda also plans to send The Lotus Pond to other major film festivals in Venice, Berlin and Cannes next year. Now that Vinda has already made his film based on his experiences as a child, we ask him if he has found the lotus pond he has been dreaming about. “No. I tried to get permission to go to Manasarovar but I didn’t get it. So, I left it to my imagination,” he smiles.

GV knows how to take people by surprise and his latest move has become the talk of the town. Two days after the release of Bapu’s Sri Rama Rajyam, RGV announced that he’s going to make a film on the lines of Ramayanam. However, it’s not going to be a mythological film. RGV is reportedly planning to adapt the storyline and set it in a more modern era with the story revolving around the conflict between two industries. He tweeted about the film and said, “My film is going to be a tense family thriller.” A marketing genius that he is, he has already decided to release the film on Sri Rama Navami in 2012.

Balakrishna wants to work with Nagarjuna

B

uoyed by the success of Sri Rama Rajyam, Balakrishna showed interest in doing more mythological films. He is currently near Rajahmundry where he’s shooting for a new Telugu film titled Uu Kodathara Ullikki Padathara. “I wish to do a character with negative shades like Ravana. And I would love to collaborate with Nagarjuna for such films. I am ready to do multi-starrers.” Although several actors have expressed their desire to do multi-starrers the trend hasn’t really caught on in the Telugu film industry. Whether filmmakers can come up with good scripts for multi-starrers or not remains to be seen.

Priyudu postponed to December 2 V

arun Sandesh’s upcoming film Priyudu has been postponed to December 2. The film was supposed to release on November 25; however the post-production hasn’t been completed yet. So, the producer Uday Kiran decided to push the film’s release by a week. Preetika Rao is making her debut with this film which has been directed by Sravan. Shweta Basu Prasad is the other heroine in the film. The film’s songs were released recently and Mohan Jonah composed the music.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
