STATUES FORGOTTEN?

Just a month back Hyderabad looked different. Today, it has got a makeover with painted flyovers and dividers, new roads and a variety of other features. While the officials have been on their toes to make sure everything is spic and span, one thing they have missed 2012 out is the Tank Bund road. This was brought up by a student from one of the City’s leading hospitality management institutions who questioned the CM on why statues demolished during the ‘One Million March’ had not yet been restored, especially as the biodiversity meet was just around the corner.

Dowry deaths rising despite ironclad laws

Despite stringent laws against dowry harassment, there are several cases registered in City. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com

espite stringent anti-dowry laws which make it a non-bailable offence, tragic deaths of hapless women are occurring in the City. In the last four days alone three women committed suicide, a fourth one is battling for life in hospital, and in another instance, a heartbroken father killed himself — all due to dowry harassment. Naheeda Begum committed suicide by hanging herself at her in-laws’ house in Meraj Nagar, Borabanda. The 23-year-old woman was married to Syed Hussamuddin only 14 months ago and her parents had given them some gold and `7,000. Soon after marriage the woman was allegedly tortured mentally and physically for more dowry. Based on parental complaints, the Sanatnagar police has booked a case against the in-laws. In another case, Anjum Fatima killed herself by consuming poison at her home in Asadbaba Nagar in Kishanbagh. Anjum had lost her father a few years ago and had been working as a domestic help. Her

wedding had been fixed by her mother and her uncle. However, the groom’s family demanded a bike, cash, and gold, which the bride’s family could ill afford. In a separate incident, T Nagakrishna Soumya, an IT professional hanged herself to death. The 26-year-old woman had been married to T Venkatramna only 5 months ago and her parents had given `5 lakh, gold and other articles at the time of marriage. Her husband who wanted to move to UAE demanded that her parents meet the expenses, which they couldn’t afford. K Shanta of Borabanda faced a similar predicament when her mother-in-law Yadamma and sister-in-law Prabha harassed her for dowry. The 33-year-old woman set herself on fire and is currently battling for life with 60 per cent burns. The burden of dowry harassment often takes a toll on the girl’s parents as well. Mohd Jeelani of Sanathnagar was unable to see his daughter Shabnam being tortured by her husband and in-laws for additional dowry. Heart-broken, he consumed poison and died. While cases have been booked, the practice continues to prevail.

ll India Christian Federation (AICF) national president G Vijayaraju is taking up 48-hour hunger strike on October 2 at Indira Park here demanding the State gov-

ernment to mount pressure on the Parliament to make a law providing SC status to Dalit Christians. In a press note, AICF organising secretary P Ravi alleged that the State Assembly

had unanimously passed a resolution on the issue in 2009, but failed to bring it in the form of law. He alleged that the issue was buried after Kiran Kumar Reddy became the CM. NSS

Smart traffic cops get ready for green event

Strike kills auto driver

L

ast year we had reported how a fresh bout of the Telangana agitation violence resulted in the death of an auto driver. The Telangana agitation saw the APSRTC staff go on strike. To tackle this problem bus drivers were hired. The auto driver was killed after the bus driven by a hired driver ran over him. The angry public blocked the roads at the site of the incident.

Considering cops are the face of the government, traffic police are getting ready with new sets of uniform and some exercise to keep them fit for the upcoming CoP.

THINGS WE 5LEARNT TODAY The column that teaches everyone something new about the way the City functions.

1

Despite laws, dowry harassment cases continue. It appears that implementing and passing laws is still not enough to eradicate various social evils. The increasing number of dowry harassment cases despite a strict anti-dowry law is proof.

2

A year later, remains of the Million March remain. The Million March last year saw many statues being vandalised. Inspite of a budget allocation no repairs have been carried out.

3

It’s not only the City but cops too get a makeover. The City may be getting spruced up for the CBD, but the cops too are not far behind. Etiquette classes and uniforms are on the list.

4

ECBC to bring relief by reducing electricity bills. The ECBC (Energy Conservation Building Code) which will be implemented in the City will hopefully help trim our inflated bills.

5

GHMC’s ‘unique’ beautification programmes. While trees are being felled in many areas, the GHMC is busy with its beautification programmes which involves placing potted plants all over the City.

t’s not just the Cityscape that is getting a set for the gala CBD; traffic cops too are getting a spruced up, with a smart look for the eye of the world. In place of the usual out-ofshape traffic policemen in crumpled uniforms looking away from the traffic snarlswould be smart men and women in freshly-made, well stitched uniforms — complete with a cellphone, walkie-talkie, helmet and mask — at least for 19 days — from October 1. The additional commissioner of police (traffic) CV Anand is giving final touches in the greenroom for his men and women who will be facing thousands of delegates from India and abroad. New uniforms are being stitched. The government has drafted some 3,000 traffic policemen for the world meet. They are drawn from different departments but one thing in common is the smart-look and smart behaviour. “As per our plan, we have completed road works with traffic angles, and 14 routes are identified for CBD. Some 145 buses from Hyderabad and 100 buses from Cyberabad are being arranged for the delegates, Anand said. Nearly 300 uniformed scouts

will be fully devoted for the delegates and their buses. They will be clad in Navy blue pants and light blue shirts and will be trilingual to handle both Indian and foreign delegates. Those facilitating the CBD must know Hindi and English as thousands of Indian delegates from different states will be speaking either in Hindi or in English. These scouts are being given a 10-day crash course on manners and language and also some insight into what the CBD means. Anand agreed that the term biodiversity is Greek to many

While taking care of the look of his men is within his powers, he is powerless when dealing with the happy-go-lucky

GHMC. “I have been telling them to get the road networks and other infrastructure ready but they did not react. But they are hurrying now,” rued Anand. “When I got a chance to visit the Olympics that were held in UK, I found they had completed all preparation till the last detail one year before the event. But here, the authorities are still out with spade and bucket just 10 days before the function to roll on,” Anand said. “CBD is a great opportunity to showcase our City and its ability to handle a mega event. Nobody should take it lightly,” he believes.

Students who allegedly had a major role to play in vandalising the statues are again planning a rally, two days before the event. and freedom fighters. Of these 33 statues, as many as 16 statues were allegedly vandalised by T-supporters during the ‘Million March’ called by pro-Telangana groups about a year-and-a-half back. Ever since, these statues have

not been replaced. “The corporators and floor leaders have raised this issue with the CM several times. In fact, we have also given a written representation and he responded to it. However, nothing is being done about it. At lease before the CBD meet they should have done it. It shows Hyderabad and it’s culture in the wrong light,” said J Hemalatha, corporator, Himayathnagar. Students who allegedly had a major role to play in vandalising the statues are again planning a similar rally just two days before the main CBD event, from September 27 to 28. Talking to Postnoon, Krishank Manne, OU JAC spokes person said, “We will do it again. Statues are lifeless so it makes no difference but we have lives and we are giving our lives for a separate state. Last time what happened was mob mentality. However, the throaty slogans of the TRS did not allow any business to be conducted and the Speaker adjourned the House for one hour. When resumed, the scene remained same. he Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), which intends to trim the electricity bills with energy-efficient building designs will be introduced in the State soon. Hyderabad will see its implementation in full scale. In a high level meeting held on Tuesday, the road map developed by ASCI (Administrative Staff College of India) and NRDC (Natural Resources Defence Council) was reviewed. Focused on advancing the implementation of ECBC, the government also expressed its keenness to promote Energy Efficiency in buildings being constructed under Rajiv Avas Yojana. Benefits of Building Energy Efficiency include saving $696 billlion worldwide by 2030. Reducing lifetime operating costs of buildings, reducing peak electricity demand, reduced need for more power plants, reduce greenhouse gas

emissions and to spur innovation in the construction and building materials sector. The measures together with Information Communication Technology (ICT) could change the face of the City for better, officials believe.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) publishes ECBC and forwards it to the Ministry of Urban Development, which issues a directive to state and local level bodies to start implementing. At state level Urban Development Departments (UDDs) develop

General Development Control Regulations (GDCR). Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) write building codes complaint with ECBC. Later BEE approves any provisions in local GDCRs and bylaws where they are different from ECBC. State legislature approves and Urban Local Bodies enforce those codes at city and town level. Apart from Andhra Pradesh; Rajasthan, Orissa, Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and West Bengal will be among the list of ECBC adoption of 65 per cent by 2017. For the implementation of the ECBC, the government would be giving time for the designers, builders and code officials to obtain knowledge and experience. The Energy Efficiency Requirements will be broken down into multiple phases (tiers), based on the energy saving potential and level of skill training required. Besides this, hiring third party contractors for Inspection and Plan Review is on the cards.

classifieds FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2012 SPECIALITY CENTER FOR WOMEN 10-15% of all married couples have difficulty in conceiving even after one year of marriage. At this stage, both partners should be investigated – The husband must have a semen analysis and the wife must have a sonography to confirm ovulation, an HSG (hysterosalpingogniphy) which is an X-ray of the womb, a hymeroscopy and laparoscope to confirm that tubes are open or not and whether there is any other problem such as endometriosis, or fibroids etc. Simple problems like anovulation (egg not coming out regularly) in the woman or a slightly low sperm count in the man can be treated with planned relations or intra uterine insemination, where the husband’s semen is washed and inserted into the womb with a thin tube exactly at the time when the egg comes out. However there are situations where specialized treatment is necessary. One of these is when both the tubes in the woman are blocked. She cannot conceive naturally in this situation and requires invitrofertilization (IVF) or test tube baby. Also if the sperm count is very low, less than 5 million, the chances of conceiving by simple means is practically nil and this couple needsintracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In both these procedures preliminary tests are done for both partners. The woman’s hormone tests arc also done. Depending on her age, she is given injections to control or stop her internal hormones which are started one week before her menses. From the periods, a second set of injections called gonadotrophins are started, which produce a large number of eggs in the ovaries. Monitoring is done with sonography and hormone tests. After about eleven days of injections the patient is admitted in the hospital for a few hours, given anesthesia and the eggs are removed using a transvaginal sonography and needle. There are no cuts or stitches. Once the eggs are removed, they are checked and cleaned in the laboratory. In IVF, they are incubated with washed sperms while in ICSI, each egg is injected with one sperm using a special machine called the micromanipulator. The eggs are then kept in the laboratory for an average of 2 days, by which, time the eggs are seen to be fertilized and grow to 6 8 cell size. On day 2, 3 or sometimes even after 5 days, 2 3 embryos are placed back into (uterus) in a procedure known as embryo transfer using a thin tube. The woman is given hormones to support the pregnancy. After two weeks, a blood test reveals whether there is a pregnancy or not. There are some specialized techniques like laser hatching or blastocyst culture which can be done in selected cases. If the husband has no sperms in the semen sample (azoospermia), a hormone test is done to ascertain whether there is testicular failure or just a blockage of the tubes which bring out the sperms. If the hormones are normal, a tiny biopsy from the testes can retrieve sperms which can / then be used to do ICSI and achieve a pregnancy. Modern technology has made it possible for most infertile couples to be able to achieve their dream of having a child. REPORTERS’ DIARY

Power saving? Not for MLAs Lights, ACs and no action. This is the scene in the Assembly building, where the CM’s directives for saving power are flouted with impunity. Their rationale? The guidelines don’t apply to public representatives. MISMATCH IN THEIR WORDS AND DEEDS IS SHOWING Long, long ago, someone called Mahatma Gandhi had said, “My life is my message.” Well, our current crop of netas can’t be faulted for not reading him because that is in a forgotten past. But mediapersons were in for a mild shock when the other day, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy addressed a press meet in his Assembly chamber with all the air conditioners and lights on, though it was broad daylight. The Assembly building has a centralised AC system and an additional AC is not required. Even otherwise, where was the need of keeping ACs on when the temperature was 28 degrees C? Postnoon remembers it was the CM’s directive to all government departments to conserve energy and curb wastage of electricity in view of the power crisis. When we reminded the deputy secretary of the Assembly about the CM’s directive, he said that the directives were meant for government staff and offices and not for public representatives. “The Assembly buildings used by MLAs are exempted from such directives,” he said, while

asserting that there was no violation of any rule. Commenting on the incident, Loksatta MLA Jayaprakash Narayan pointed out that the Assembly building does not have proper ventilation. “We blindly try to ape Western and African countries when it comes to building structures. But in a country like ours, where the sun shines almost throughout the year, our buildings should reflect the environment.” It was not just the CM’s office; the adjacent building, which houses offices of the floor

leaders of the Congress, YSRCP, TRS and MIM were not behind in wasting energy. A lot could have been saved if these worthies had some respect for the words they utter, say concerned officials. IA

A POTTY CIVIC ADMINISTRATION Cutting trees and putting them in pots is, in sum, the beautification works of GHMC to greet the world biodiversity conference. The GHMC did not raise a finger when a massive banyan tree was slashed in Punjagutta on Sunday

because it was “sucking water from the borewells around”. What better sign of illiteracy can one think of? A row of trees on Madhapur road were also cut down to get ready for the world biodiversity conference. Can one think of a bigger folly? The GHMC ought to be put in first standard science class to know some basic facts. They hardly know that the banyan tree is India’s national tree. Its importance is not just biological but cultural too. It is closely associated with Lord Krishna, for instance. This apart, banyan tree (Indian fig tree) feeds birds and provides shade. The area around a banyan tree gets more breeze. It has several medicinal qualities too. In fact, banyan tree preserves and purifies underground water. All this while, the GHMC, in its eagerness to assimilate the `300 crore allotted for decking up the City for CBD, has been busy putting up potted plants and nursery grass. But it doesn’t realise that potted plants are of little value environmentally. Only adult trees supply oxygen and preserve ground water. PK

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HORIBLE CM

Was it a slip, or was the pun intended? On Chief Minister

Kiran Kumar Reddy’s birthday, MLA Ranga Reddy decided to prove himself more loyal than the king. He fitted his vehicle with a large banner wishing the ‘Horible Chief Minister’ a happy birthday! Now, Postnoon is sure that many are in agreement, for instance, the TDP and the Left parties. But the leader may not have been amused. While loyalists frowned upon the banner, it brought a smile on the lips of countless along the way. Some public service, this! SS

HOLIDAYS

A wit wanted to know if citizens too should not get ‘tax holidays’ in view of public servants enjoying numerous holidays. In India, where religious freedom is guaranteed, a never ending procession of religious holidays march on, turning every second day into a holiday. e once dreamt of becoming a sensational lawyer. He planned to set up a corporate legal firm and employ scores of legal brains. But destiny had other plans for the 43-yearold civil supplies and legislative affairs minister, D Sridhar Babu. His father’s untimely death forced him to make his foray into politics in 1999. Babu’s father, D Sripada Rao, was a renowned Congress leader from Karimnagar district. Sripada Rao was the AP Legislative Assembly Speaker and created a niche for himself in State politics. Naxalites cut short his life in 1999. “I was successfully practising as a High Court lawyer when I lost my father. The responsibility to fill

the vacuum created by him fell on me. I accepted it to carry his legacy forward and fulfill his dreams of developing Karimnagar, especially his assembly constituency Manthani,” Babu said. The youngest minister in N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s Cabinet, Babu maintains strong public relations with all kinds of people. He never seems to tire of solving public problems and reaching out to people in need. “People in distress visit me. Those who are rich, they don’t come to me. So, whoever comes to me, I will try my level best to solve their problems,” Babu says between the numerous telephone calls he attends. The minister meets around 600 people every day. His strong public relations skills helped him make a hat-trick in his constituency.

Reminiscing about his childhood, Babu says he had a regular upbringing. Being the fourth among six siblings, he had the good fortune to pursue his studies. “My father never intended us to get into politics. He wanted all of us to pursue higher education.

My mother looked after our education,” he said. The minister is an avid cricketer as well. He represented Nizam College and University of Hyderabad during his college days. Babu says that even becoming a Cabinet minister is a big achievement in his life. He is also a realistic man when it comes to politics. “You never know.” He rues the fact that, being a politician, he does not get any time for his family. “Thank god my children are very young. If they are old enough, they could have complained that I am not spending quality time with them,” he adds. After becoming an MLA, Babu married Shailaja Ramaiyer, an IAS officer of AP cadre and the couple has two children. The minister vows he will set up his law firm in two years.

The Himalayan Horsemen

Around 50 cavaliers from tiny villages dotted all over the Himalayas prepare to run the perilous course, a narrow strip of rocky river bed 14,107 feet above sea level. UPPER DOLPA: The clansmen and monks of the mystical land of Upper Dolpa first gathered eight centuries ago to pray, feast, fight over property and vie for the title of fastest horseman in the Himalayas. They have met every 12 years since in the Tibetan Year of the Dragon for a festival in modernday Nepal centred around the world’s highest horse race, although these days they ride for honour rather than land. Around 50 cavaliers who have come from tiny villages dotted all over the Himalayas prepare to run the perilous course, a narrow strip of rocky river bed 4,300m above sea level in the rarified air of the world’s tallest mountain range. A horn signals the start and men in silk head dresses, leather coats lined with yak fur, golden chains and icons of the gods of animistic folk religions swinging from their necks gallop away on their ornately adorned ponies. Thousands of monks and other devotees who have walked for days to the Shey Dragon Festival roar on their favourites and wave the flags of their gurus. The 1.6 km course is essentially a ravine studded with boulders, ditches and a not inconsiderable stream of treacherously cold water. It is not long before the riders succumb to the hazardous terrain. After the halfway turn three of the runners lose their balance, stumbling on the rocks along the jagged bed of the stream before a pile-up takes out another five near the end. One horse tumbles to an almighty splash after clattering into a felled co-competitor, braying loudly as if to let the crowd know straight from the horse’s mouth how unpleasant the icy stream feels. The winner, by a

The Shey Dragon Festival, ostensibly a religious affair, is among the last of the great Himalayan clan gatherings that hark back to a time when warring tribes would meet over a week-long armistice to take their disputes to the sporting field. Under the Tibetan Yarlung dynasty there was a large migration in the 8th century towards Dolpa, which changed hands between the Purang, Guge, Mongolian and Lo kingdoms over the following 800 years before being swallowed up by Nepal. The festival, one of the most important events for Buddhist pilgrims, has taken place under all these regimes, with around 15,000 from across the world celebrating this year, over five days straddling August and September. “We wanted to develop our knowledge of the Tibetan culture and of how people here live and spend their time,” said Italian lawyer Enrica Senini, 39, who had trekked for five days with companions from across Europe. “Coming to a festival like this is a unique opportunity to do that.” During the festival, prayers are conducted by Tulku Lama Rinpoches and pilgrims embark on an eight-hour walk, known as a “kora”, around the sacred Crystal Mountain overlooking the festival site. CRR and Repo explained If the repo rate is reduced, people will be able to borrow at a cheaper rate. MONEY MATTERS Nupur Pavan Bang

T

he Reserve Bank of India (RBI), announced on Monday, that they with keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 8% and cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 0.25%, to 4.5%. What does this mean for you (the readers)? The repo rate is the rate at which RBI lends money to the commercial banks. Using this rate as the benchmark, the banks decide their Prime Lending Rate (PLR). PLR is the rate at which a bank lends to its most credit worthy customers. They add basis points (one basis point is 0.01%) to PLR, if a customer’s credit worthiness is lower. The credit worthiness of a customer is determined by the repayment capacity of the customer, repayment of both interest and principal. It is also determined by the past record of the customer with respect to payments. For example, does the customer pay his credit card bills on time, does he pay his loan installments on time etc. There is an agency called Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited (CIBIL), which assigns a credit score to each individual depending on

Vodafone ready for discussions

NEW DELHI: Vodafone Thursday said it was willing to discuss a tax demand of `11,000 crore but remained non-commital on paying a lesser amount if the interest and penalty are waived. “I don’t know,” Analjit Singh, non-executive chairman, Vodafone India, told reporters after a meeting with tax officials here, when asked if the company would be prepared to pay the `8000 crore were the government ready to waive off the penalty and interest. “No, I am saying we are ready to discuss. Vodafone is not a company that is confrontationist, that is controversial. This is not Vodafone’s business. It is building telecom. So, Vodafone is definitely willing to discuss,” he said. IANS

the past payments records. Banks use this score when determining the creditworthiness of an individual. Now back to repo rate. So when repo rate goes up, our loans get more expensive as the banks will raise the PLR and if the repo rate goes down, our loans will get cheaper. RBI has kept this rate unchanged at 8% this time. CRR is the percentage of money that the

banks are supposed to keep with the RBI to meet the withdrawal demands for fixed deposits or any other time liabilities. The CRR is a percent of the Net Demand and Time Liabilities (NDTL) of the bank. When CRR is high, banks have lesser money with them to lend out. On the other hand, when CRR is reduced, the banks have more money with them to lend. This brings in more money supply in the market. Since RBI has reduced the CRR, the money supply should go up in the market. What is meant by money supply going up? It means that the banks will have more money to lend, and hence more people may be able to get loans. This means that more money will be circulating in the economy. A few banks may decide to decrease the interest rates for auto or home loans. Though it is unlikely as the repo rate is same. Why did the RBI not reduce the repo rate as well? That’s because they are being cautious. They are worried about inflation. If the repo rate is reduced, people will be able to borrow money at a cheaper rate. This will encourage them to borrow and spend. If they borrow and spend, the demand for goods and services will go up. If demand goes up, prices will further go up. Hence, the RBI has kept the repo rate unchanged.

government has finally resolved to shut down the mines pouring manganese and iron ore in the Selaulim reservoir, the source of potable water for 55 per cent of the state population. The state will have to shut down the mines operating within the river zone of Selaulim dam, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told reporters yesterday. “We have to stop all mines pouring in material (iron ore and manganese) in Selaulim reservoir,” Parrikar said. ously be reluctant to visit the city after finding it labelled on the internet as a disturbed area, the bench held. The development assumes significance as the Chandigarh Administration just about three days back, made clear its intention of not withdrawing the notification declaring Chandigarh a disturbed area. The disturbed area tag was

given to Chandigarh in 1983 during the dark days of militancy in Punjab to give special powers to the Administration, police and security forces for effectively dealing with the militancy between 1981 and 1992. notification, officials of the UT Administration and police are set to lose the extra security cover, allowances and perks. Meanwhile, UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil, while reacting on the court directive, said that the Administration had to follow the direction. “The tag had been retained for some specific reasons. There have been intelligence reports regarding infiltration from border areas. If anything untoward happens in the future, who will be responsible for it,” he had said. UT Home Secretary Anil Kumar said that the Administration will analyse the judgement and then hold a meeting to decide the future course of action. Petitioner Surinder Bhardwaj had contended that the disturbed area tag was a hurdle for the tourism industry. PTI

Recently, the manganese content in Selaulim water had reached alarming levels. The state PWD had admitted that it was six times more than permissible levels. Parrikar said although the manganese content has increased in the reservoir, there is nothing to worry about. “All manganese compounds are not soluble in water and though the content is there, it is free floating,” he said. “The chemical manganese which can be absorbed in the stomach is within control,” Parrikar added. Incidentally, the area around the dam is a part of Netravali wildlife sanctuary, where mining has to be completely banned. PTI

LONDON: News Corp is planning to give James Murdoch responsibility for its US television businesses, the Fox Networks Group, the Financial Times reported. Murdoch, who is already deputy chief operating officer of News Corp, will oversee the group which includes Fox network and cable channels such as FX and National Geographic.

WASHINGTON: The last of the 33,000 US soldiers that President Barack Obama sent to Afghanistan nearly three years ago as part of a military surge have left the country, US defense officials said. It follows an unprecedented number of NATO soldiers being shot dead and comes as anti-Western protests sweep Muslim countries.

MOSCOW: A woman in Russia stabbed her boyfriend to death in a quarrel over a pet rat, officials said. The 24-year old woman accused the 45-year old man of getting rid of her pet rat, whom she could not find in her apartment. The woman then stabbed him to death with a glass shard. The woman faces up to 15 years in jail.

ABUJA: Two top commanders of the Boko Haram outfit have been killed in an operation in Borno in Nigeria, the military said. The outfit commanders, who were not named, were killed in an operation by the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno, Xinhua reported, citing JTF spokesperson Lt Col Sagir Musa.

A Roma gypsy woman has been detained in Russia’s Siberian region on suspicion of hypnotising a clothes store owner in Omsk city into giving her seven fur coats, RIA Novosti reported. “The culprit was looking intently into the eyes of the shop director when she offered to hand the seven coats over to her friend so she could try them on,” police said. She left, saying she would bring the coats back the next day. The mink coats were worth some 400,000 rubles. The woman faces fraud charges which could land her in jail for up to six years.

hen news of the Centre’s decision to push through the FDI in multi-brand retail emerged, one eager beaver piped up: “Cool! Soon I can shop at Ikea”; another reminisced on the joys of shopping at Tesco and couldn’t wait to relive it in India. And therein lies the rub. To many of the middle-class and other social-aspirers, the entrance into the retail market of large global retail chains holds no fear, quite the opposite. For years we have been asked to pay exorbitant prices for products that are available for a pittance anywhere else in the world. All this, hopefully, will be a thing of the past when the market turns more competitive. I say hopefully, as it’s likely that the FDI will hit the skids again thanks to political wrangling to appease vote banks. Will there be a fallout if retail FDI is passed? Indeed: just like when the auto industry opened the floodgates to global brands. But people adapt, that’s the beauty of being human. We have to evolve… constantly and consistently, and while the slew of reforms may merely be pre-election eyewash, it’s sorely needed to bolster a flagging economy. India’s burgeoning middle class can be blamed for many things: the rise of neo-conservatism; the spate of intolerance and hyper-sensitivity, but that doesn’t mean we can’t decide what’s good for us. The government should concentrate on governing, and strive to give us a market where choice rules and the consumer is king. The writer is the editor, Postnoon.

Use economics to target free-speech abusers ANONYMOUS ALIEN

L

ast week, a disgusting and offensive movie ostensibly made by an American about the Prophet Mohammed began circulating on the internet, and sparked violent uprisings in many Muslim communities mostly against American Embassies and Consulates. Yesterday, a French magazine published equally disgusting and offensive cartoons which, again, depicted the Prophet. Violent protests have already begun to erupt against French Embassies and Consulates. The two above events are not unrelated. The free-speech loving editor of the French magazine, upset by the violent uprisings against the American film, seems to hope that he will start a deluge of satirical publications around the world all mocking the Muslim religion. His logic appears to be that Muslims cannot possibly start violent protests against everyone. Now, more information is coming out about the very film the French magazine was looking to defend. It may very well be that the movie — marketed and shot to look like a low-budget independent film — actually

has powerful and wealthy backers with a specific political agenda who knew and wanted exactly the kind of response the movie has garnered from the Muslim community. To what ends, remains unclear. I am a big fan of free speech. Is it sometimes abused? Of course. But here’s the problem: what’s abuse of free speech to one person is a just political statement to another. In America, I have seen people burn the American flag — an incredibly offensive act to some, a political statement to others — done in the name of free speech. I have witnessed, first hand, Judaism, Catholicism, and Mormonism all mocked mercilessly in cartoons, magazines and night-time television, again, all in the name of free speech. Was this right? Proper? In good taste? Probably not. Now, in recent years, Islam is becoming the target of this kind of mocking. And the response has been violence. What is the goal of a violent response? Is the goal to stop free speech? If it is, I say to those committing acts of violence to be careful for what you wish, because who’s to say that the next free speech to be shut down won’t be your own right to pray. Or perhaps the goal is to make people specifically fearful of mocking the Muslims?

There are two problems with this idea: first, this tactic risks making people fearful of Muslims in general, not just of Muslims protesting offensive movies and cartoons. And second, the tactic isn’t working, as the French magazine has already proved. I have a suggestion. First off, let’s get rid of the violence. It’s getting an idiotic and badlymade movie way more attention and views than it deserves, and it’s getting innocent people killed. And second, if you want to really put a stop to totally offensive publications and films, hit the creators of such content not with violence, but with economics. If all the Muslims in France

(peacefully) boycotted the magazine that published the offensive cartoons and its advertisers, than I assure you, the magazine would think twice about running such idiotic content in the future. And, when the names of the backers of the film finally emerge — and I assure you, they will — boycott and even peacefully protest their businesses too! Will this end religious mocking? Of course not. But it will slow it at least as much as a violent response, without countless innocent lives being taken and an environment of fear permeating our planet. conomic Reforms’, ‘Special Economic zone’ are the latest phrases for the UPA. But what the common taxpayer does not understand is why the Congress government is eager to usher in FDI in retail stores while areas that badly need FDI and reforms such as media, airlines, utilities, and infrastructure go abegging? FDI in infrastructure, especially in non-conventional energy production and transport will prove a boon. But it is futile to argue where intentions are unholy. It is now clear that the aims of the UPA are to bury the cancerous coalgate and bag the massive freebies coming from a grateful retail giants of the West. It is obvious that India is not in dire need of FDI in retail where millions eke out a living. Displace them and you have a social disaster on your hands. The UPA government has no right to barter millions' right to live for a cache of dollars.

indy Lee Garcia’s statement she had no clue that Innocence of Muslims was going to be an antiIslamic film, takes us back to a similar incident in 1979 (though by no means as earth-shattering) when a cast of Malcolm McDowell, Peter O’Toole and John Geilgud starred in what was supposed to be a film about the life of the notorious Roman emperor, Caligula. The film turned out to be a soft-porn venture into history, with couples fornicating in the background while the stellar cast delivered their lines oblivious to what was going on behind them. Needless to say, they were not impressed.

t is not often that all musicians make good conversationalists. More so when the lack of real facetime and a cranky phone line connection make a constant vacuum in the conversation. But Ravi Iyer, the guitar playing, tube amplifier and hollowbody guitar maker, who also teaches music, breaks the ice by saying, “The most common question I have been asked so far is how my journey in music has been so far.” After the ensuing laughter and the eventual common realisation that John McLaughlin and Shakti made pioneering contributions to jazz-rock-fusion world wide we settle for

Discontinued music for four years and then I got back into in 1997. And I have been playing ever since. We have heard that the album of your first fusion music project is coming out soon? Yes, it is called Bends. It is a live album and has been very much inspired by Shakti. And ofcourse, John McLaughlin. How right is the audience in judging bands by saying that they all try to sound a lot like their influences? How does a band make original music? That phase of sounding like a copy is always there. But as we learn to play and explore, we must realise

that our aim should better than covers. This transition will happen, with practice over a due course of time. But I never think too highly of the crowd, they have turned into a horde blindfolded by social activity. Tell us about your gear and a little bit about your fetish for light tube amps. I play with my Greg Bennet hollow body jazz guitar, a Godin La Patrie nylon stringed classical and also an American Paul Reed Smith 531. Apart from that I have also designed and made my own double neck custom guitar for the fusion music project.

I prefer tube amps because they sound very clean, especially the vintage tube amps. I usually record with a Fender 30 tube amp at home and also carry it along to the stu-

But the challenge is to stay focused and stick true to your choice.

Why is it that local bands slip away into oblivion after releasing a couple of albums? Right now, the entire music industry is about marketing and PR. It is not about music anymore. Bands that are really good are dropped in the favour of the most noisy sounding ones. And there is no point in releasing albums because they eventually turn into visiting cards and have to be given out for free. Nobody earns from an album, not in India and it takes a lot to get out of this vicious cycle of the trade.

But getting over that initial shock and arming oneself with knowledge and tips to deal with the ailment is the only way to ensure that your child has a better quality of life and can outlive the age set by medical experts. A decade or so back, a patient with cystic fibrosis usually lived only up to the age of 17. But with the

But what it really takes is patience and perseverance – not just from the patient but from the family and doctor as well. “Cystic fibrosis affects the lungs and the digestive system by causing thick mucous to build up, leading to infections. So it is very important for them to ensure that they follow a healthy diet, get proper nebulisation treatments and most importantly do their chest physiotherapy,” says Dr Mohd Samiuddin, consultant pulmonologist at Global Hospitals. Antiphospholipid syndrome refers to an autoimmune disease. It is said to be one of the most common treatable cause of recurrent miscarriage. It is also known as Hughes Syndrome. People of any age and gender can be affected by antiphospholipid syndrome although it is more common among women. A blood test can diagnose the condition.

team of doctors including a pulmonologist, nutritionist, physiotherapist and a gastroenterologist, need to work on a patient. Considering the mucous build up is massive in the digestive system as well, it leads to infections, sometimes severe, and also malnutrition. “The mucous that gets stuck in the windpipe often causes recurrent infections and the scarring can affect the lung quality. Parents usually realise the gravity of the condition and the risks associated with it. So after the initial set back, most of them arm themselves with the technique to perform a chest physiotherapy and knowledge about the kind of medication their child will be requiring. Once they learn how to do the physiotherapy they can continue doing so at home. Typically a patient will require the physiotherapy to be performed three to four times a day,” says Dr Samiuddin. He adds, “For babies humidifiers can also help loosen the mucous. It can even be made at home by using hot water to create the steam to thin the mucous. A family also needs to make a lot of adjustments to fit the child’s health needs into their lives. They need to rearrange their lifestyle to ensure there is always a caregiver around the child. Since the digestive system is affected by cystic fibrosis, a healthy, non-oily diet needs to be followed, so that means changing food habits as well. Since the child is prone to respiratory infections, there are vaccines available that they can give their child to reduce these.”

WEIGHT LOSS

RESEARCH

Alzheimer’s sabotages brain wiring?

Weight loss surgery may have long-term benefits While short-term benefits of gastric bypass are proven, a new study has found long-term improvements in diabetes and cholesterol.

A

ccording to new research weight loss surgery has long-term health benefits lasting well beyond the procedure. While short-term benefits of gastric bypass surgery for obese people are proven — with three quarters of recipients losing at least 20 per cent of pre-surgery weight and keeping it off — a new study found long-term improvements in diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol, Reuters reported.

The Utah study, published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, indicated good results from bariatric surgery even after six years. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, a majority of patients who had Type 2 diabetes before surgery were in remission and also had lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. “It confirms other studies that have demonstrated bariatric or weight-loss surgery appears to be the

most successful treatment or therapy for severely obese individuals,” the Tribune quoted Ted Adams, a faculty member at the University of Utah School of Medicine, as saying. According to a report in US News and World Report, he said, “Individuals who have gastric bypass surgery lose a significant amount of weight. At two years, they had lost 35 per cent of their initial body weight. At six years, it was about 28 per cent, which shows a pretty

durable weight loss. At six years, in those patients who had type 2 diabetes prior to surgery, 62 per cent no longer had a diagnosis of diabetes. There was also significant remission in high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high triglycerides.” Bariatric surgery is typically recommended for people with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, or — where they also have diabetes or severe sleep apnea — at least 35, according to Reuters. GLOBAL POST

WASHINGTON: Alzheimer’s could actually sabotage the working of several of the brain’s networks, says a study. Beau Ances, assistant professor of neurology, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, who led the study said: “Communications within and between networks are disrupted, but it doesn’t happen all at once.” “There’s even one network that has a momentary surge of improved connections before it starts dropping again. That’s the salience network, which helps you determine what in your environment you need to pay attention to,” added Ances. Ances and colleagues analysed brain scans of 559 subjects. Some of these subjects were cognitively normal, while others were in the early stages of very mild to mild Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists found that all of the networks they studied eventually became impaired during the initial stages of Alzheimer’s. Researchers identify networks by determining which brain areas frequently become active at the same time, but anticorrelated networks are noteworthy for the way their activities fluctuate: when one network is active, the other network is quiet. This ability to switch backand-forth between networks is significantly diminished in participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The default mode network, previously identified as one of the first networks to be impaired by Alzheimer’s, is a partner in two of the three pairs of anti-correlated networks studied. It’s not practical to use these network breakdowns to clinically diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, Ances notes, but they may help track the development of the disease and aid efforts to better understand its spread. Ances plans to look at other markers for Alzheimer’s disease in the same subjects. IANS

TIME FOR A SPOOKY THRILLER

‘I look forward to challenges in life’ Harshvardhan Rane talks about working with director Ravi Babu, his next outing Avunu, which is a horror movie, and much more HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com

T

here's a certain amount of quirk in almost every Ravi Babu's film. His latest film Avunu is no different. The film, starring Harshvardhan Rane and Poorna, narrates the story of a couple who begin to witness strange incidents in their house after they move to a new neighbourhood. Harshvardhan Rane, who was last seen in Naa Ishtam, can't stop raving about Ravi Babu. “When I was shooting for Thakita Thakita, people used to tell me that the day I act in a Ravi Babu's film, I will understand how hard it is to act. In a way, I had this mental picture that he's an extremely strict director. When I finally met him, I realised that his real persona was a complete contrast to what I had heard about him,” Harshvardhan Rane says, adding “I have always looked forward to challenges in my life and I didn't think twice before accepting the offer.” Fear is the central theme in Avunu. Unlike most other horror films which rely too much on camera movements and sounds, Ravi Babu took a

completely different approach to shoot Avunu. “Ravi Babu told me that he was casting me because I was a theatre actor. Avunu is a unique film in this genre because Ravi Babu wanted to keep the camera static and he never used any of the conventional techniques. There's so much scope to perform under such circumstances because it's almost like a play,” Harshavardhan says. So could he relate to the theme of the film? “I am not a big fan of horror films either. It took me seven years to get over the experience of watching Raat,” he recalls and assuring us that there's no monster in the film. So what is it that the protagonists in the film are afraid of? “There's no face to the fear in our film. But when people watch the film, I am sure they can relate this fear to some incidents which might have occurred in their life. You can feel it everywhere around you. It may not harm you, but the idea that someone is watching

you when you are alone is itself quite spooky,” he adds. The film was inspired from a real incident which Yami Gautam had narrated to Ravi Babu during the shooting of Nuvvila. Ravi Babu has been going gaga over Poorna, who's playing Harshavardhan's wife in the film. After making her debut in Seema Tapakai last year, Avunu might very well turn out to be her breakthrough film in Telugu. “Poorna is the best part about the film. She's very sharp and one of the most mentally strong people I have ever met,” he confesses.

The interpretation is far from the bling-Barbie doll style. His style is very grunge with fabrics and silhouette references from 80s sportswear. THOUGHT OF THE DAY

The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. And very shortly I discover that there is no reason. John Cage

KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Apart from making it to the shortlist of the movies that are to be sent for the Oscars, the film has made a whopping total of `54.35cr till Wednesday. The film despite being stuck in lawsuit regarding the usage of ‘Murphy Munna’ has not dampened the audience’s enthusiasm from going for the movie. Barfi! started gathering rave reviews during the promos itself. Most of the movie is inspired from Charlie Chaplin’s films and scenes from another film, The Notebook can also be seen.

While Anurag Basu is left laughing his way to the bank, a part of the audience is fuming at the blatant copy of scenes from these movies. Ranbir and Priyanka especially have been commended for their brilliant portrayal of a deaf and dumb boy and an autistic girl. Southern star and Goan beauty Ileana D’Cruz too deserves mention for not being just a wallflower. In other news, rumour has it that Ranbir Kapoor is to play music legend Kishore Kumar in Anurag Basu’s next venture. In Barfi! Ranbir earned accolades for imitating Charlie Chaplin to the hilt.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Tiger, Justin share lead Woods, who can capture the US PGA season playoff championship with a victory, and Rose, who dropped in a 50-foot birdie effort at the 18th, holed six birdies each. ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Tiger Woods (right) and England's Justin Rose each fired four-under par 66s on Thursday to share the lead after the first round of the US PGA Tour Championship. Woods and Rose each fired six birdies and took two bogeys in the 30-player showdown at East Lake. "I played well," Woods said. "It was a very consistent round. I hit the ball well, made a few putts, got around well." Woods sank a long birdie putt at the par-3 second and a six-footer for birdie at the par-4 third. After a bogey at the fourth, Woods finished the front nine with a birdie and made another with a long putt at the 12th. Woods, in the final group, took a bogey at the 14th but answered with birdies at the par5 15th and par-4 16th to claim a share of the lead. Rose, who has not won since March at Doral, answered a bogey at the second with a birdie at the next hole and a bogey at the seventh with back-to-back

I've gotten more comfortable playing with him. You get more comfortable being around somebody. We've been around each other a lot in these playoffs. World No 1 Rory McIlroy on Tiger Woods birdies to conclude the front nine and again at the 14th and 15th before closing with his impressive birdie. Sharing third on 67 were Americans Steve Stricker, Matt Kuchar, Bo Van Pelt and Scott Piercy with Americans Hunter Mahan, Brandt Snedeker, Zach Johnson, Robert Garrigus and Australian Adam Scott on 68.

World No 1 Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, who has won three of his past four starts, fired a 69. McIlroy, who played alongside Woods in round one, can also claim the playoff title with a victory as can Snedeker, Nick Watney and Phil Mickelson. Mickelson opened on 69. Watney fired a 75. McIlroy laughed off comments by retired Aussie star Greg Norman that McIlroy intimidates Woods, who once boasted such an aura on his way to winning 14 major titles, the most recent of them in 2008. Thursday's pairing was the fifth time in four tournaments that Woods and McIlroy have played together and the eighth time this year. "I've gotten more comfortable playing with him. You get more comfortable being around somebody. We've been around each other a lot in these playoffs." "Tiger shot a little better than me, but the quality of golf out there was high," McIlroy said.

BOXING DRUG BUST

Chavez Jnr tests positive for marijuana LOS ANGELES: Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr (right) tested positive for marijuana after losing his World Boxing Council middleweight crown to Argentina's Sergio Martinez, promoter Bob Arum told reporters on Thursday. The Los Angeles Times and ESPN reported that the Nevada State Athletic Commission told Arum's Top Rank firm of Chavez Jnr's urine test results after the Mexican's unanimous decision defeat last Saturday in

Las Vegas. The Mexican fighter faces up to a one-year suspension or possible revocation of his boxing license and a fine that could take all of his $3 million purse from the bout from the Nevada authorities. A factor that will weigh into consideration of Chavez Jnr's punishment is a prior positive doping test for the Mexican in Nevada. In 2009, he tested positive for a diuretic and was hit with a seven-month ban. AFP

Chavez was arrested on a drunken driving charge last January just two weeks before a successful title defense. He reached a plea deal in that case three months ago that included three years of probation.

Zimbabwe out of T20 WC

Zimbabwe crashed out of the event after slumping to their second defeat in the tournament having lost to hosts Sri Lanka by 82 runs in the opener. HAMBANTOTA (SRI LANKA): South Africa produced a clinical performance to knock Zimbabwe out of the ICC World Twenty20 with a comfortable 10-wicket victory in a lopsided Group C match here today. Zimbabwe crashed out of the event after slumping to their second defeat in the tournament having lost to hosts Sri Lanka by 82 runs in the tournament opener. As expected, both Sri Lanka and South Africa, who face each other in their last group match here on Saturday, have progressed to the Super Eight stages from the pool. Opening their campaign in tournament, South Africa first restricted Zimbabwe to 93 for eight after inviting the opposition to bat and then piled up the runs without breaking a sweat. Richard Levi smashed his way to a 44-ball unbeaten 50 while Hashim Amla remained not out on 32 from 33 balls as South Africa chased down the

the show with four wickets as a pace inspired South Africa restricted minnows Zimbabwe to the paltry total. Kallis utilised the lively pitch at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium to perfection and scalped four wickets for 15 runs

THE PIETERSEN SAGA

Kevin talks on-going: Cook LONDON: England captain Alastair Cook revealed on Thursday that Kevin Pietersen (right) remains in talks with ECB officials as the controversial batsman fights to save his international career. Pietersen has been in exile since sending text messages to South Africa players that contained criticism of then England skipper Andrew Strauss during the recent Test series. With reports circulating that Pietersen had also fallen out with several team-mates as a result of his behaviour, he was axed for the final Test, the subsequent one-day series and the current World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka.

England managing director Hugh Morris claimed there are still issues to be resolved with Pietersen before he can return to the fold and Cook confirmed there was still some distance between the two parties as talks continue. Morris and ECB chief executive David Collier have been in

Sri Lanka, where Pietersen is working as a television pundit for the Twenty20 World Cup, and it is believed they met the exiled star in a bid to continue the peace process. “I did have a meeting with Kev and I have been involved in meetings. Clearly the issues haven’t been resolved and that is why he is not available for selection at the moment,” Cook said on Thursday. “Time hopefully will be a healer and we will be able to move on, but the issues will still have to be resolved before Kevin plays for England again. “At this present time the issues haven’t been resolved and he can’t be selected.” AFP

to rock the Zimbabwe innings. He was ably supported by pace duo of Morne Morkel (2/16) and Dale Steyn (1/9), who produced a lethal opening spell to dismantle the Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe’s struggle can be ascertained from the fact that only two of its batsmen — Craig Ervine and Stuart Matsikenyeri — managed double figures. Put into bat, Zimbabwe found the going tough as Morne did the early damage by picking up two wickets in his first two overs. Morne first went through the defence of opener Sibanda in the second over and then came back to induce an edge from Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor which was gleefully accepted by South Africa captain AB de Vielliers. Morne’s brother Albie also found himself among wickets in his opening over when he had Hamilton Masakadza caught by Levi at mid-on as Zimbabwe slumped to 16 for three. PTI

T20 PREPARATION Darren Bravo aims to keep it ‘simple and smart’ COLOMBO: Elegant West Indies batsman Darren Bravo says playing “smart” cricket will be the key to success in the ongoing World T20 in Sri Lanka. “The aim is always to get better at what you do. If you keep it simple and play it smart you will get success,” Bravo, 23, was quoted as saying in a West Indies Cricket Board statement on Thursday. “I have played some good innings in the past and that has given me the confidence to go out and perform. It is important that I continue doing what I have been doing and that I believe in myself.” Bravo, cousin of West Indies batting great Brian Lara, is not a

big-hitter like team-mates Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard but is capable of scoring briskly with his exciting stroke-play. “There are a lot of power-hitters in the team, so it is important that when I get my chance, I look to settle down and bat around the others,” said Bravo. Bravo, who caught the eye with three centuries in four Tests on his team’s tours of Bangladesh and India last year, said he was aware of his “role and responsibility” in the shortest form of the game. “People tend to think that 20 overs is not a lot of overs but I tend to look at it as balls — there are 120 balls in an innings and that is a lot of balls when you think about it,” he added. Bangladesh look up to Shakib for NZ upset The 25-year-old left-hander has been promoted to number three in the last few matches to give an ideal start to the innings which is opened by another aggressive left-hander Tamim Iqbal. PALLEKELE: Bangladesh will be hoping star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan shines with both bat and ball if they are to have a chance of upsetting New Zealand in the World T20 Group D opener here on Friday. The dashing 25-year-old lefthander has been promoted to number three in the last few matches to give an ideal start to the innings which is opened by another aggressive left-hander Tamim Iqbal. Hasan is also an effective left-arm spinner, often picking up some much-needed wickets in the middle overs. Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said Hasan’s presence gives strength to the team. “Hasan is our best cricketer,” said Rahim. “Hasan is now playing more freely than ever before, not just with the bat and ball but also on the field and off it as well. His presence means a lot.” Rahim, who replaced Hasan

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has said that Shakib Al Hasan’s presence gives strength to the whole team. as captain last year, is confident his team will get through the group stage, where they will also meet 2009 champions Pakistan. “We are confident of going through to the Super Eight. We are in a tough group. But our team is quite balanced so we need to get the basics right and if we execute our plans then we can beat any team in the world,” said Rahim. The Afghanistan team have become the unlikely flag-bearers for the minnow nations at the World T20 COLOMBO: Afghanistan’s cricketers have become the unlikely flag-bearers for the minnow nations at the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka with an eye-catching, fearless display in their opening game against India. The part-timers from the war-ravaged nation, many of whom took up cricket in refugee camps in Pakistan, gave India’s multi-millionaires a scare in their opening match in Colombo on Wednesday before lack of experience cost them. At the Premadasa stadium, they let India off the hook with

In reply, Afghanistan raced to an impressive 75-2 in the 12th over before a late collapse saw the non-Test side bowled out for 136 with three balls to spare, losing by 23 runs. ers because every couple of hours they are feeling a little better. The weather is bit colder so hopefully they can gain some energy and be available to play,” said Taylor. In contrast to Bangladesh’s reliance on spinners, New Zealand will look to seamers for wickets. “I guess we will be looking to our seamers to have a big play in the tournament. A few of our players played in the Sri Lankan league (in August this year) and had some success,” said Taylor, who believed the Bangladeshi left-arm spinners would not pose problems for his batsmen. “We played a lot of left-arm spin in the nets because we will be playing at least 12 overs of left-arm spin. We need to play them well,” said Taylor of Bangladesh’s frontline spinners Hasan, Elias Sunny and Abdur Razzak. AFP

After Spurs cruised to a 3-1 win at Reading on Sunday to give Villas-Boas his maiden success with the north London outfit, the former Chelsea manager must have hoped for a first taste of victory in front of his own fans at White Hart Lane. But Tottenham’s luck was out as Villas-Boas’s side had three goals disallowed and Lazio emerged

with a point from the Group J opener despite being out-played for long periods. Spurs have now won just once in the first five matches of the Villas-Boas era and the Portuguese coach, sacked by Chelsea after just eight months, will be desperate to end his barren home run when QPR visit White Hart Lane in the Premier League on Sunday. All eyes were on Tottenham goalkeepeer Hugo Lloris early on as he was chosen ahead of Brad Friedel. The £8 million debutant seemed nervous when he bowled the ball out to a shocked Kyle Naughton, but the full-back was fouled by Ogenyi Onazi and Spurs escaped. Tottenham’s best chance of the first half came when Jermain Defoe clipped a lofted ball to the back post where Gareth Bale was waiting, but the Welsh midfielder headed straight at Federico Marchetti. Bale thought he had made amends for his miss moments later when he delivered a pinpoint cross which Clint Dempsey converted with a diving header, but the linesman flagged for offside. AFP
