LAMBERT THE QUEEN? Will Adam Lambert follow in Freddie Mercury’s footsteps and take over as frontman for the legendary band Queen? Things seem to be moving in that direction.

GANGLAND! Unbeknown to the blissfully ignorant public, the City’s streets hide a gang culture that threatens to erupt into all-out war. If it does, citizens will be caught in the crossfire, and the police are doing their level best to make sure that doesn’t happen… but they are in a race against time, as the City’s two main gangs get set to go ballistic.

Godfathers of Hyderabad erupt CRIME Mohd Subhan mohd.s@postnoon.com
I
t may not be as perilous as the Dawood IbrahimAlamzeb street war in Mumbai in the eighties but it is no less dangerous in their magnitude. City police have on their hands tough tasks of several gangs that play Godfather even from behind the bars. Two prominent gangs wars are currently running in the war theatres in the Old City though chieftains are in jail. Task Force tell Postnoon that the most debilitating of them has been the Ayub Khan—Choor Kaiser of Malleppally. Both are in prison but their minions have been cleaning their barrels and putting their knives to grinding stones. “Both are angling for each other and caught in between are innocent public and police,” says Task Force Inspector A Mohan Kumar. Ayub, police say, has to his (dis)credit more than two dozen cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion. His one-time-
The gang wars in Hyderabad appear to be just like a scene out of Marlon Brando’s The Godfather. friend-turned-foe is Choor Kaiser who too runs his fiefdom in the Habeebnagar police station limits. The rivalry came to a flash when Choor is said to have murdered Ayub’s co-brother Abdul Khader in 2010 in the Nampally criminal court compound. Police stumbled upon a plan Ayub had hatched from the cell
to kill Choor Kaiser. Accordingly Ayub informed his brother in-law Badar , but the attempt failed as the police foiled the plan and caught his brother in-law Badar and Ayub's followers and seized weapons from them, Kumar said. He further said that Choor has long been a rowdy-sheeter of Rein Bazaar police station and
had a free run in extortion and other activities in the absence of Ayub. Both have scores of youths in each camp ready to pounce on anyone for their bosses. Police have another tough task of reining in another gang— Najaf and Wajid. Najaf comes under the Rein Bazaar police station limits and Wajid of
Mirchowk police station. Wajid had killed Najaf's close friend Qamar in the past and that made Najaf angry. He in turn killed Wajid’s brother Mithun Javed. Since then it has been no holds barred for them. Recently Wajid had planned to kill Najaf. He had chased him in a filmy style in Miralamandi but Najaf managed to escape and later the Task Force officials arrest Wajid’s gang and seized weapons from them. Inspector Mohan Kumar said that in the past Najaf and his associates attacked Wajid’s house situated in Irani lane in Shahraan many times and every time Wajid would escape. In the latest bid on Wajid, Dabeerpura police booked a case against 28 members including Najaf, his brother and rowdy sheeter Shajju Pahelwan and other. Though Najab is involved in all sorts of criminal activities he is also useful in giving information to the police on rival gangs. Police and prison authorities have a tough time controlling Najaf and Ayub even in jail. If they come face to face, that is the end. They tend to make a bid on each other’s throat in jail, officials say.

Flyover in limbo does more harm than good CIVIC Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com
W
hat happens when a flyover is left abandoned for a year? It turns into a parking lot and a regular hangout for goons. A similar fate prevails for the unfinished flyover beside Begumpet railway station which has been lying unused for about a year. The flyover, which is located at an arm’s distance from the Hanuman Temple beside the Hyderabad Public School (HPS) under the Greenlands flyover, is meant to connect the Begumpet railway station to Nature Cure Hospital in Ameerpet, thus diverting arterial traffic and avoiding jams. However, it has not yet served its purpose as there has been no construction here since a year. The flyover has been under con-
struction for five years. Now, it has turned into a parking lot and a loitering ground for anti-social elements. “Once the flyover is complete, it will be of great help for the residents. Apart from reducing traffic-jams, it will also increase connectivity to
Ameerpet,” said Faheem Baig, who lives barely 50 meters from the ‘under-construction’ flyover. “The flyover has been lying unused since a year. There has been no construction going on and no one knows why,” said Mohammed Babu, owner of a pan shop opposite the flyover.
Ironically, the flyover is complete but for the two access points — one from beside the railway station and the other beside the HPS. The road leading to the flyover from Nature Cure Hospital is still under construction, making the flyover unusable. The flyover now provides shelter to goons at night. “We are in peril. The police don’t stop these hoodlums either. It is hard to sleep at night,” said Kumar, a resident of the area for the past 15 years. Dhananjay Reddy, additional commissioner, GHMC, said that the reason why the road connecting the unfinished flyover in Begumpet could not be completed was because of the properties that were coming in between. “We have now acquired the properties but the formalities haven't finished. However, once that is finalised, the road will be laid in a month’s time and the flyover will be open for use,” he said.

Commissioner AK Khan on Wednesday said that there would be no scope for irregularities in the on-going police constable recruitment drive. He added that they have made fool-proof arrangements for a transparent recruitment process. Khan was addressing a gathering at the conclusion ceremony of 5 km run, which is being held as part of the police constable recruitment process. It may be emphasised here that a total of 51,820 candidates had applied for the posts. Out of these candidates, a total of 45,847 candidates have cleared the 5 Km run event. The important aspect of this recruitment process is that around 6,000 women aspirants have also applied for the constable posts.

Bypoll effect: BJP, CPM eye the T-cake POLITICS U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com
T
he TRS is trying to strike a deal with the BJP to prevent a split in votes, and the CPM has decided to go it all alone with its Left chum, the CPI deciding to back TDP. And, the TDP is doing everything to wrest maximum seats because Chandrababu Naidu’s political future is at stake. The by-elections have stirred all parties except the ruling Congress which is down in the dumps. Jagan’s YSRC withdrawing in favour of the TRS has boosted the morale of the party and now its sole thorn on its feet is the BJP with which it hopes to effect a deal. Fearing the reversal, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has already taken an anticipatory bail saying the election results are no
referendum on his government. The constituencies going for by-polls belonged to the Congress and the TDP. Nagam Janardhan Reddy from Nagarkurnool(Mahaboobnagar), Gampa Govardhanfrom Kamareddy(Nizamabad) Jogu Ramanna from (Adilabad), and N Prasanna Kumar Reddy (Kovur-Nellore) were elected on TDP ticket. CPM may try Kovur seat. While the first three have
resigned for Telangana, Prasanna Kumar Reddy joined the YSR Jagan party. He is campaigning already for Kovur while Jagan backed out from Telangana seats as part of an understanding with TRS for the future sake. Rajaiah from Station Ghanpur-Warangal and Jupalli Krishna Rao from Kollapur-Mahboobnagar were sent to Assembly on Congress ticket but later defected to TRS. Rajeshwar Reddy was elected

from Mahaboobnagar as an independent and then joined the Congress. Nagam Janardhan Reddy is a strong candidate may contest as an independent and the TRS is supporting him. TDP has selected a successful businessman Janardhan Reddy to take on its former leader who drifted away from the top leadership, finally going out of the party. Former minister Jupally Krishna Rao has been very vocal for a separate Telangana state. Minister, DK Aruna, has a strong following in Nagarkurnool and she is proposing the name of Vishnuvardhan Reddy . Rajaiah is not a very strong candidate but local people say the recent tour of Chandrababu Naidu had helped him to consolidate as a champion of Telangana. In Adilabad, Jogu Ramanna will have to contest with Ramachandra Reddy, former DCC president and Shankar, ZPTC, of TDP. Gampa Govardhan, the TRS candidate, will not have much competition as the Congress leader Shabbir Ali, will get the ticket .Shabbir lost twice here earlier. TDP has a strong man Chandra Mohan Reddy, former minister, who is going to give a tough fight to N Prasanna Kumar Reddy of YSR Congress.

KARIMNAGAR: CPI State secretary Dr K Narayana has urged the TRS and the YSR Congress parties to support it for State bandh his party will be organising on February 28. Talking to the media here on Tuesday on the occasion of his party’s State conference, Dr Narayana said that the bandh was to protest against the “anti-people policies” of the Congress government in the State. He said that there would be a marathon discussion on the political situation in the convention. On alliance with the TDP, he said, no decision had been taken so far. He, however, said that a decision might be taken on the eve of the elections. When asked about his party national leader AB Bardhan’s statement on the alliance with the TDP, he said that these proposals would be considered only at the time of elections. Dr Narayana also demanded that the government release the ACB report on its raids on liquor syndicates. He alleged that corruption was at its peak under the Congress rule. He added that his party’s State conference would discuss people’s problems and future course of action.

But the speaker N Manohar was not in favour of suspending the MLAs. The speaker, eager to transact business, is learnt to have acceded to the TDP demand. few years ago, nearly every student in the State dreamt the American dream. A professional degree in hand, everybody flocked education consultants and visa offices looking for an admission and a gateway to the US. In fact, the standing joke is that every second Indian in the US is from Andhra Pradesh. However, of late the trend seems to be changing. According to reports, universities in Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand, are gaining popularity with Indian students. For the last four years, students have been choosing these countries over the US. The massive turnout of students at the recent education fairs organised in the City is a testimony to this change in trend. The recently concluded fair held by Neptune Educational Consultants registered over 200 students in a span of seven hours. The unstable economy in the US and easy availability of visas to other countries are some of the reasons for this changing tide. This year, visas to Canada have increased by 80 per cent. “Earlier, countries like Canada and Australia were very rigid with their visa process. But now they have relaxed their rules a bit and the process is easier, quicker and more efficient,” said B Satish Kumar, an employee of Neptune. The extended work permit period is also working in the favour of these
countries. In countries like Australia and Canada, the government is now issuing a minimum of two years work permit after the completion of the course, an added advantage to expats. Migrants too are making the most of these opportunities. “After my wedding, I am shifting to Australia for a few years. However, I will be going on a student visa as the process is easy and I can stay for a longer duration. I’ll be pursuing my PhD there,” says Valli
D, a lecturer at Siddanthi College. Surprisingly, despite frequent reports of Indian students being attacked in countries abroad, the sea of students migrating remains unaffected. In India, about 85 per cent of students who go abroad, want to pursue postgraduate courses. The number of students wanting to do their under-graduation has decreased in the last five to six years. “The graduation syllabus in the West is so comprehensive, that they don’t feel the need to study further. Hence, it is easier for Indians to get seats for PG and PhD courses in these countries,” says Satish. This year’s education exhibition revealed that popular subjects for Indian students abroad are Business and Management, IT & Engineering, Biosciences, Fashion Design, Law, and Social Sciences.

Let’s bury the Congress: Harish to TDP
T
RS senior leader and Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao asked the TDP to work with his party, so that they could together bury the ruling Congress in the State. Talking to the media on Tuesday, Harish Rao said that his party was willing to work with the TDP if Chandrababu Naidu gave a letter to the Union government, extending support for the Telangana demand. He said that they could destroy the Congress party which was standing in the way of Telangana. Harish Rao reminded the TDP leaders that the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had claimed that four parties, including the TDP, were yet to express their views on Telangana and it would not be possible for the Union government to decide on the statehood issue or call an all-party meet, until these parties put forth their views. He said that his party was ready to withdraw from contest in the ensuing by-elections, if Naidu gave the letter. The TRS leader said that the TDP leaders were making vague remarks on the Telangana issue. He said that both the ruling Congress and the TDP were not co-operating in bringing about a resolution on Telangana in the Assembly. The TRS was not insisting on immediate resolution and only wanted the government to accept the proposal, he said.

ill recently, the 14 km stretch between Tarnaka and LB Nagar had age-old trees provide shade to passers-by. No longer. The entire route is now rendered barren, thanks to the metro rail project. The stretch alone has sacrificed close to 400 adult trees which have are estimated to be almost half a century old. And, sadder still, an additional 4,000 will fall to the axe during the course of this project. So how will we compensate for the environmental and health costs, people wonder.
Environmentalist Shalini Ramamorthy for instance, asks, “Cutting trees is a work of a moment but it takes years to grow one. I don’t understand how the government can be so careless to not even hire professionals for such crucial works.” GHMC Urban Forest Wing’s director PN Srinivasulu, however has reassuring news. “L & T has permission for felling 4000 trees for making the metro line but they are trying to translocate as many trees as possible. Some trees withstand relocation but some will not. Trees that cannot be translocated are being cut while others will be used on both sides of the road.” And, Srinivasulu adds, “There has been an agreement that 8,000 trees will be planted in its place once the metro rail project is completed.”

Clash of the titans Apple retaliates against NYT for its series on manufacturing practices
Henry Blodget
A
pple appears to be retaliating against The New York Times for its excellent series of articles on Apple’s manufacturing practices. Those articles, which, among other things, explained why Apple has moved its manufacturing overseas and why no companies build high-tech gadgets in the US anymore, increased the scrutiny of how Apple makes iPhones and iPads. The articles also unearthed details that Apple presumably did not want emphasised — including how hard the people who make iPhones and iPads work and how little money they make, as well as how many Americans have been left jobless by the industry’s move overseas. Apple has since responded to these stories and others by beefing up its monitoring of its supply chain and defending its decision to build products in
China. And sophisticated New York Times readers at least now understand precisely why Apple builds products in China — and why it has no choice to but to do so. (This trend is not Apple’s fault, and it is not incumbent upon Apple to fix America’s problems.) But instead of thanking The New York Times for focusing attention on this important issue, Apple is apparently retaliating against it. In the past week, Apple’s famously aggressive PR team gave the Wall Street Journal an exclusive interview with CEO Tim Cook — an interview that produced an important scoop about how Apple is effectively merging the app functionality of its iPhone and Mac operating systems. Apple also gave an exclusive interview with Phil Schiller, Apple’s marketing chief, to a dazzled John Gruber, a blogger who runs a popu-
lar Apple fan site. And what did The New York Times get? Squat. Erik Wemple of The Washington Post spoke to a source at The New York Times who offered the paper’s theory for the snub: “They are playing access journalism... I’ve heard it from people
inside Apple: They said, ‘Look, you guys are going to get less access based on the iEconomy series.’” Sour grapes? Perhaps. But also probably the truth. This, of course, is exactly the way the traditional mainstream media game is played. If you want to be fed ‘scoops’ and
given ‘exclusive interviews’, you have to toe a company’s line. And no company plays this game harder and more effectively than Apple, which is so popular with readers that it can bless a no-name journalist or publication with star status overnight. Based on our experience and others, Apple’s PR team does everything it can to hand out favours to journalists who write articles that it approves of and punish those who don’t. This attempted manipulation consists of a variety of standard carrot and stick techniques, most of which are used to some extent by other companies as well. The carrots include invitations to Apple’s famous product-launch events, flattery, and ‘exclusive’ access to some of Apple’s executives. The sticks include launch-event snubs, guilt trips, and the silent treatment. So it would certainly be no surprise to us if The New York Times is now serving some time in Apple’s penalty box.
Apple better than most, labour group says
F
actories that make Apple’s iPad and iPhone are better than most, the Fair Labor Association said. After an initial inspection of Foxconn Technology Group facilities in China, FLA president Auret van Heerden said the conditions are “better than
average”. “As Apple stock broke the $500 barrier, critics accused the telecommunications giant of profiting from sweatshop labour. “I was very surprised when I walked onto the floor at Foxconn, how tranquil it was compared with a
garment factory,” he said, Reuters reported. “So the problems are not the intensity and burnout and pressure-cooker environment you have in a garment factory. It’s more a function of monotony, of boredom, of alienation perhaps.”

India unveiled
Shooting row: Foreign minister to visit India
KOCHI/NEW DELHI/ROME:
A day after two Italian Marines were sent to police custody for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen off the Kerala cost, Italy has rushed its deputy foreign minister for talks to ease the escalating diplomatic row even as New Delhi made it clear that it will go by its legal process. A Kerala court on Tuesday allowed investigators to look for the murder weapon on the Italian cargo vessel from where the two Marines fired and the Kerala High Court admitted three pleas over the incident. One of the pleas by a victim’s kin seeks `1 crore compensation. The Marines plan to move
NGOs release evidence in mining scam BANGALORE:
Documentary evidence on tainted former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and his kin receiving kickbacks from mining firms for granting leases was revealed by an NGO on Tuesday. According to a Dharwadbased NGO Samaj Parivartan Samudaya (SPS), which submitted 113-page documents to the Supreme Court-appointed committee , the two real estate firms owned by Yeddyurappa’s family members received `6 crore in return for granting a 330-acre mining lease to R Praveen Chandra in October 2010. the Italian cargo vessel, also filed a petition in the high court that no fresh arrests should be made without hearing their version. Italy’s Deputy Foreign
Minister Staffan De Mistura is expected to meet senior Indian diplomats and call on External Affairs Minister SM Krishna Wednesday in New Delhi. The visit will be followed by that of Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi February 28, sources said. Mistura will “continue on a political level the action so far carried out by a delegation of experts from the Italian foreign, defence and justice ministries”, the foreign ministry said. “We have made it clear to them that as representatives of India, we will go by our legal process. ‘UP voters starved of development’ GHAZIABAD: BJP national general secretary Anant Kumar on Tuesday alleged that both Mayawati and Mulayam Singh were responsible for “criminalisation” of Uttar Pradesh, which has affected the economic development of the State. In last 10 years, industrialists have migrated from UP and settled in Bihar, Gujarat and Uttarakhand due to security issues, Kumar claimed. Bihar had become a “model state” under BJP rule and UP was waiting for “total” development, which only his party could bring, he claimed. Strongly criticising Congress leaders, including
Rahul Gandhi, for openly violating election norms, he said action must be initiated against erring leaders. Women felt safer under the

‘Congress is the most corrupt’ NOIDA:
Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Tuesday attacked the Congress, calling it the most corrupt political party in India. Addressing a gathering of yoga followers, Ramdev asked voters to teach the Congress a lesson in the ongoing Uttar Pradesh elections. “The Samjwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and BJP might not be entirely pure but it is essential to first root out the most corrupt party,” Ramdev said. He accused Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi of enacting “drama” by rolling up his sleeves and tearing up manifestos at election rallies. But he did praise Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka for doing “hard work” in the State. IANS
Voters should even have the ‘right to reject’ MATHURA: Team Anna member Kiran Bedi on Tuesday said that the anti-corruption campaign’s next step will be to demand the inclusion of a ‘Right to Reject’ button in EVM machines. “The situation changed fast in the nation after Emergency was imposed. The system has become such that those who want to remain honest have to pay a heavy price,” she claimed. If they do not like the candidates, voters can record their disapproval by entering their names into a register available with the polling official, she said. PTI

‘No breakthrough on Iran’
GLOBE AT A GLANCE Indonesian police storm Bali prison to end riot
VIENNA: A visit to Iran by UN inspectors probing Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons activities failed to achieve a breakthrough, with Tehran denying access to a key military site, the IAEA said on Wednesday. “Intensive efforts were made to reach agreement on a document facilitating the clarification of unresolved issues in connection with Iran’s nuclear programme,” the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement. “Unfortunately, agreement was not reached on this document.” The team requested access both during this visit and during a first trip in late January to the Parchin military site, near Tehran, where it believes explosives testing was carried out, but Iran “did not grant permission,” it said. “It is disappointing that Iran did not accept our request to visit Parchin during the first or second meetings,” IAEA

Yukiya Amano, IAEA director Director General Yukiya Amano said in the statement. “We engaged in a constructive spirit, but no agreement was reached.” The statement gave no fur-
ther details and did not say whether another visit was planned. Iran’s envoy to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, was quoted by the Iranian news agency
ISNA as saying the talks had been intensive and covered “cooperation and mutual understanding between Iran and the IAEA. These negotiations will continue in the future,” Soltanieh said. The high-ranking IAEA team led by Herman Nackaerts, the Vienna-based agency’s Belgian chief inspector and its Argentine number two Rafael Grossi, was due back in Vienna later on Wednesday. The visit was aimed, the IAEA had said, at clarifying all “outstanding substantive issues” surrounding Tehran’s nuclear programme, in particular what it called “possible military dimensions.” The trip was also seen as an important precursor to a possible resumption of talks between Iran and the P5+1 powers, the United States, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany, which broke down in Turkey 13 months ago. They were forced to open fire and three people were injured in the legs and taken to hospital,” Bali deputy police chief said.

A new candidate for the Republican polls? WASHINGTON: On February 6, it all seemed so clear. A year later, New Zealand honours the dead
Families who lost loved ones hold each other during a remembrance service. AFP CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand paused for two minutes’ silence on Wednesday to mark the first anniversary of the devastating Christchurch earthquake which left 185 people dead. At 12.51 pm , the moment the 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit New Zealand’s second largest city
and sent buildings crashing down onto lunchtime crowds, the nation fell quiet to honour the dead. About 60,000 people gathered fat Christchurch’s Hagley Park, where families of the victims locked arms and bowed their heads. Some wept while others closed their eyes in prayer. At the service, Governor-General Jerry Mateparae read a message of condolence from Prince Charles and a video address from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who visited the city just before the disaster, was played. “Even those if us who were far away on that terrible day share your grief and we know it’s been a struggle,” she said. “But through that struggle we’ve seen the strength and perseverance of the people of Christchurch.” Earlier, Prime Minister John Key told a memorial service for victims’ families that the earthquake was “one of our darkest days”. Key said the earthquake “wreaked havoc on an unimaginable scale”, changing Christchurch forever. AFP

Top India CEO warns of slowdown JASON OVERDORF NEW DELHI: Founder dean of Indian School of Business (ISB) Pramath Sinha, the founder and managing director of 9.9 Mediaworx, consulted with Government of India and the country’s largest companies for 12 years as a partner at McKinsey & Co, where he helped to build the firm’s India practice. GlobalPost’s senior correspondent
for India, Jason Overdorf, quizzed him about the current business climate. We keep hearing that India’s economic reforms have stalled, the government is paralysed, inflation is out of control. Do these negative signals mean the shine has come off the India story? The fact is that we are going to be looking at a period that is going to be full of uncertainty and therefore a lack of hard decisions getting made and therefore any extraordinary growth beyond what we are getting now is not going to be unlocked. We are looking at economic growth in the 6 per cent range now, when only a few months ago, being bullish, we were looking in the 9-plus range. We are slowing down, and we will continue to peter out. It’s obviously disappointing given our potential. The potential could easily be

10 percent. As a CEO I feel sad that we are underperforming against our potential, and frankly this was a solvable problem. What, then, are the biggest threats to the India story? Are they solvable problems? There’s a real crisis in the leadership in this country, and the challenge is that it’s spread across all parties, or at least the two principal parties. It’s clear that the current set of leaders can’t pull them through, and it’s not clear who will be the next leader, and therefore everybody is trying to jockey to be the next leader and pull each other down to size. Unless one of these large parties gets their act together, managing coalitions and managing their own pulls and tugs is going to impact decision-making, policymaking and the continued reforms we need in this country. In what areas does India seem to despair of any solution? This mantra of inclusive growth [introduced by the Congress party] is a good tagline, but despite the supposed progress that we’ve made on the average growth, or quality of our economy, the disparities have grown. The numbers of people who are still poor, who are still dying, who are still malnourished, who are still not getting an education are staggering. It almost requires a new business model, or a new economic model, or a new development model. We’ve given it the name of inclusive growth, but I don’t think we’ve figured out the answers.

Some people argue that inequality doesn’t matter, as long as incomes are increasing. If you look at what is happening with the Maoist movement, it’s telling that [the simmering civil war that the prime minister has called the biggest threat to India’s security] is happening in that half of the country [the northeast]. Economists always draw a diagonal line from the northwest to the southeast, saying this is the part of the country that is in the dark ages, where it’s like sub-Saharan Africa, and this is where we have the Maoist problem. There’s a war going on there, and we don’t even hear about it. There are body bags coming out of the northeast, right from Chhattisgarh to Bihar to Uttar Pradesh every day. Every day people are counting how many dead, and we don’t even recognise it. What are some of the business opportunities that remain exciting? Anything that feeds on the consumption boom and further fuels that boom, whether products or services, are all opportunities. Retail, food, education, health, all these essential services, are going to be tremendous. But investors will have to be patient. The venture capital firm that invests in my company calls it “patience capital.” What do you mean by that? You will grow, you will have opportunities, but you have to be prepared. The rules of the game will change, as they just have for telecom investors in India, poli-
cies will not move quickly, local companies will provide unfair competition. All of those challenges will happen. It’s a tough market. Does that mean India is a more viable target for the big multinationals? Or are there good opportunities for small- and medium-sized enterprises as well? I think there’s a vibrant opportunity for small and medium enterprises also. Large multinationals always have a problem scaling up in India. The individual markets are still relatively small. So large multinationals come in and expect India to be huge and deliver hockey-stick growth. Then it doesn’t happen, and then they get disappointed. So to some extent this is a better market for the small- and medium-sized. Speaking of Vodafone and Reliance, what signals do you read in the recent Supreme Court judgements, canceling 122 telecom licenses associated with the 2G telecom spectrum scandal? Both these judgements show that there is a strong, thinking, legal resource that’s independent from the government. People always talk about the sanctity of our judicial system and both these cases have affirmed that. That’s the good news. The bad news is that they showed that the government doesn’t know what it’s doing. The courts are basically saying, “Hey guys, follow the rules. You make the rules. Why are you not following the rules.” (Courtesy: GlobalPost)

Editorials STATUTORY AID OR attempt to defang EC
T
he Election Commission ensures the observance of MCC by political party (ies), including ruling parties at the Centre and in the states and contesting candidates in the discharge of its constitutional duties for conducting free, fair and peaceful elections to the Parliament and the state legislatures under Article 324 of the Constitution of India. Money power plays a very important role in today’s elections. Political parties will go full throttle to tempt the voter thereby sullying the purity of elections. We require a neutral institution to reign in such unbridled use of money power. It is to the credit of the authors of our constitution that they foresaw such an eventuality and made provisions for it. Also, kudos to the EC itself that it has been doing justice to its mandate. The Election Commission is a quasi judicial body whereby issues of violating the MCC can be speedily resolved. Getting the already overburdened courts to adjudicate on violations to the MCC is an attempt to defang the EC under the pretence of giving the MCC a statutory backing.

ussian scientists have set a world record by raising a plant from genetic material extracted from a 30,000-year-old frozen fossil recovered from Siberia. While I marvel at the prowess of the advanced technology, I can’t help but wonder if it is wise to recreate a living being of another time. When you read Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park and watch the movie years later, the possibility of bringing back an extinct species, you realise is nothing more than the imagination of a fiction writer. No, I am not paranoid about corporate conspiracies of hatching deadly species in their secret labs nor an evangelic apocalypsemonger who cries hoarse with a don’t-try-toplay-God propaganda. The plant, Silene stenophylla, is not an extinct species and is still found in Siberia. However, according to a BBC report on the development, when the scientist compared today’s plants against the samples that have been ‘resurrected’, they found several differences in the shape of petals and the sex of flowers and they could not explain the anomaly. Though human intervention has been a major reason for extinction of several species, there are several natural phenomena, which bring about this process — and in turn trigger the process of evolution. Bringing back to life something that has been dead for 30 millennia or for that matter from any point in the past brings with it the dangers of introducing into our environment an entity that we aren’t ready for or in control of. For example, a 1,000-year-old fossil might have embedded an equally old parasite, which had natural predators or countermechanisms in hosts those days. When the host organism is recreated, the parasite is also resurrected and a possible contamination of today’s defenceless ecosystem could trigger an ecological catastrophe. I have become a regular reader of Postnoon. And so I wanted to write to you with regards to a story in your paper about the garbage problem in West Marredpally. As a resident of the area, I can attest to the fact that all of us are facing terrible ordeals relating to this. There is a constant stench when we are walking on the road, a marked increase in the number of street dogs not to mention a rampant mosquito problem. We have complained numerous times to the GHMC, but we are yet to see any results. But with more stories on issues like this, we hope that the officials will sit up and take notice. these animals and more face the same fate in future if the present scenario continues. Australia is just one example. Almost every country has its share of pest problems from introduction of non-local species. With all the advancement in science and technology, we can’t still solve problems regarding creatures of our times. So the proposition of a face-off with species from the past becomes even more complex. We may be faced with a war, which we may win only with unacceptable losses to ourselves and the supporting ecology. The focus page article on Zimbabwe’s blood diamonds made for an interesting story. Not many of us know about the diamond mafia that Robert Mugabe is running. He is a very cruel dictator by the looks of it. Mugabe is stashing gem profits only to wreck havoc during elections, this certainly does not bode well for the citizens of the country. Scared to LOL? Anishaa Kumar feedback@postnoon.com
A
good-looking guy enters a room, he’s got style, panache and everything that would make him attractive. He walks up to the best looking girl in the room and introduces himself. But suddenly the girl excuses herself and walks out — familiar? Television today is filled with advertisements of dental care products that advocate how a “great smelling mouth” makes you attractive. The authenticity of the advertisements may be unknown but the problem highlighted is something that needs to be looked at more seriously. Bad mouth odour could be caused due to three main reason’s mentions Dr V Venkatesh, senior consultant and dental surgeon, Apollo Hospital, they are gum disease or a soft tissue disease, throat infections such as tonsillitis and also infections in the Oesophageal region.” Smoking and consumption of tobacco can also cause bad breathe. The most
common cause of bad odour is the infection in the oral cavity. This is known as Halitosis. In such a case food particles get accumulated between the teeth for a long time and start to decay which emits a foul odour. “Bad dental hygiene, Improper food habits and an upset stomach can also cause bad odour” mentions Dr MP Singh, Pearly Whites Dental Hospital, Secunderabad. He explains, “The stomach continuously releases acid to help digest food. If a person has irregular food habits or is on an empty stomach for a long time then the acid release a foul smell which results in bad mouth odour. Gastric infections can also cause bad mouth odour.”
Treatment To tackle bad odour and also prevent it dentists recommend maintaining good dental hygiene. Dr Venkatesh states, “It is important that people maintain good brushing habits, they should rinse their mouth well especially after meals”. He mentions that it is especially important that people rinse their mouth in the night as during the day we salivate continuously which helps clean the teeth.
Take care of your teeth n Brush regularly, at least two times a day n Rinse your mouth after meals. You can n n n n
use sugar free and alcohol-free mouth washes. Visit your dentist every 6 months. Get your teeth cleaned professionally every 6-9 months. Eat well and on time. Vitamin C is said to be good for your gums. Drink a good quantity of water
During the night as we do not salivate that much the chances of food getting accumulated is more. Dr Singh mentions that the way in which a person brushes and also the time they take is important. He suggests, “ People should brush their teeth at a 45 degree angle against the surface of the gums in a to and fro motion and should spend at least two minutes brushing the upper teeth and then the lower teeth. You should also clean your tongue. He also mentions that while brushing we should not open our mouth completely as it results in the teeth pressing the cheek thereby preventing certain areas from being cleaned. According to Dr Venkatesh, it is important that people drink a lot of water it helps clean the teeth and also removes toxins from the body that could cause possible infections in the body. Dr Singh suggests that people should get their teeth cleaned professionally by dentists every 6-9 months. The process involves scaling and polishing. He also suggests that one should eat detergent foods (foods that are high in fibre such as apples, pears and guava’s regularly) that induce more saliva when you
You’ve got the best clothes, look great and can pick up a conversation with anyone but still find people making excuses to not talk to you. The cause could be something we always refuse to associate ourselves with, bad breathe.

What are the causes of hypertension and what are the complications related to it? Blood pressure tends to rise with age, unless you take steps to prevent or control it. Certain medical problems, such as chronic kidney disease, thyroid disease, and sleep apnea, may cause blood pressure to rise. Certain medicines, such as asthma medicines (for example, corticosteroids) and coldrelief products, also may raise blood pressure. In some women, blood pressure can go up if they use birth control pills, become pregnant, or take hormone replacement therapy. Women taking birth control pills usually have a small rise in both systolic and diastolic blood pressures. If you already have high blood pressure (HBP) and want to use birth control pills, make sure your doctor knows about your HBP. Talk to him or her about how often you should have your blood pressure checked and how to control it while taking the pill. Taking hormones to reduce the symptoms of menopause can cause a small rise in systolic BP. If you already have HBP and want to start using hormones, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits. If you decide to take hormones, find out how to control your blood pressure and how often you should have it checked. When blood pressure stays high over time, it can damage the body. n The heart to get larger or weaker, which may lead to heart failure. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can’t pump enough blood throughout the body. n Aneurysms (AN-u-risms) to form in blood vessels. An aneurysm is an abnormal bulge or “ballooning” in the wall of an artery. Common spots for aneurysms are the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the body; the arteries in the brain, legs, and intestines; and the artery leading to the spleen. n Arteries throughout the body to narrow in some places, which limits blood flow (especially to the heart, brain, kidneys, and legs). This can cause a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, or amputation of part of the leg. (The writer is a senior consultant cardiologist practising at Care Hospitals, Hyderabad)

Now Prof Jules Poukens says that could be just the start of a bionic revolution. “I think there are no limits to this,” Poukens said, adding that the digitalised three-dimensional printing technique can be used for larger bones and in the longer term, even organs. “You can compare this to the first walk on the moon,” he said in a telephone interview. “We can replicate bones and even make them stronger than the original. It’s like the Six Million Dollar Man.” Poukens’ Belgian-Dutch team announced on early February that they had achieved a medical first by using a 3D printer to create an exact replica of the patient’s jawbone made from powered titanium. In a four-hour operation, the implant was inserted to replace the 83-year-old patient’s severely infected original jaw. The woman was able to leave hospital within three days after
the operation and quickly recovered breathing, speech, chewing and sensation functions, announced the University of Hasselt, in eastern Belgium. The shape of the woman’s face was also restored. 3D printing is more commonly used in the industrial design, aerospace and engineering. It prints out plastic or metal objects from digital files by building up layers of material that are shaped and molded together, usually using laser beams. Scientists say the medical applications could be enormous. “Creating metal implants by 3D printing is a stepping stone to the printing of human tissue and body parts, the ultimate promise of the technology,” said Terry Wohlers, a leading expert in 3D printing based in Fort Collins, Colorado. Poukens’ team and other researchers are now looking to use 3D printing processes to blend living bone cells from patients into ceramic “scaffolds” in order to promote tissue growth. The research could eventually be developed to build the whole range of bones. In the longer term, scientists hope more complex body parts could also be replicated.
The research could eventually be developed to build the whole range of bones. In the longer term, scientists hope more complex body parts could also be replicated “Some soft tissue, such as that for a bladder, has been produced successfully,” Wohlers told GlobalPost. “The eventual goal is to manufacture complete organs, such as kidneys and hearts. One the biggest challenges is the printing of blood vessels. Without vascularisation, organs will not survive.” In the Belgian-Dutch case, the patient’s jaw was digitally scanned. Then the customised replica was created by the Belgian company LayerWise using a high-powered laser beam to fuse layers of the powdered metal together to build up the exact shape of the infected
bone. It was then coated with bioceramic bone to facilitate its integration into the body. To have repaired the woman’s jaw using traditional methods would have involved using micro-surgical repairs using bone from another part of the woman’s body. Poukens says such an operation would have taken four times longer, with increased risk to the patient, a much longer recovery time and less satisfactory results. “A half year on, the patient is doing really well,” he said. In the next two months, a fixed bridge and dental implants will be added to enable the patient to eat normally. The operation was carried out in June in the southeastern Dutch city of Sittard, where Poukens works as a facial surgeon and was a joint effort by engineers and doctors from Belgium and the Netherlands. The team has also carried out five smaller operations using 3D imprints to repair skull defects and is now researching other applications of the technology for larger bones and blending with living cells. “Computer technology will cause a veritable revolution in the medical world. We just need to learn to work with it,” Poukens said.

GREY MATTERS
Down in the dumps?
H
ow often have you gone feeling numb or excessively aggressive with no real reason to blame this dull mood on? Or how often have you tried to immerse yourself in work, no matter what kind, but as long as you’re kept busy? Chances are that you’re depressed. But before it snowballs into something serious, recognise the signs and get help. There’s no harm in seeing a therapist about those blues. n Nothing fazes you: Usually people, especially high achievers cope with depression by behaving over confident and fearless — the exact opposite of how they’re feeling. So doing daredevil stunts, acting reckless and basically doing things that make them feel powerful when they’are actually down in the dumps is a common trait. n Alcohol’s your best friend: What normally used to be just one drink with dinner has now turned into more than a couple of pegs before dinner, a few through the meal and another as a nightcap. If you’ve begun to seek solace in a bottle, it is about time you sought help before you turn into an alcoholic wreck. Drinking is one of the most common things people turn to numb that emotional pain. So before you’re grappling with both alcoholism and depression get help. n Performance in bed: Just because you’re not experiencing the same sex drive like before does not mean you go on a romping spree. If you’re obsessed with succeeding in the bedroom, chances are you’re using sex as a tool to keep your mind off what’s really bothering you — depression. n Frequent fights: Everybody has differences in opinions. But if you find that otherwise reasonable arguments quickly escalate into fights simply because you’re not able to keep that temper in check, it’s about time you realised where the problem really lies. n You feel numb: Often people who are depressed find that they feel nothing at all. No anger, no sadness, no happiness; nothing. This could probably be because you’ve been so busy trying to keep sadness at bay, you just lose touch with the emotional side of you. What’s worse is that this zombie-like state can leave you feeling anxious and alienates your loved ones. Source: www.forbes.com

FirstBase For Love of the Game (1999) Based on Michael Shaara’s novel, this movie explores the story of baseball legend Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner), who at 40 has one last chance to prove who himself and win Jane Aubrey’s (Kelly Preston) heart. It’s an oldfashioned Hollywood sports/romance story.
The Natural (1984) Generally considered a classic tribute to baseball, The Natural deals with an unknown middle-aged batter named Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) who appears out of nowhere to take a losing 1930s baseball team to the top of the league. When he finally earns the fame he’s due, with the aid of a bat cut from a lightning struck tree, he is inexplicably shot by a young woman.
Field of Dreams (1989) A beguiling mix of fairy tale, drama, baseball and family, Field of Dreams is a film you must not miss. A farmer, Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) hears a voice telling him that “If you build it, he will come.” So builds a baseball field on his farm, upon which the ghosts of legendary Chicago Black Sox players appear to play. When the voices refuse to cease, Ray seeks out a reclusive author to help him understand the meaning of the messages and the purpose for his field.
Major League (1989) Showgirl Lynn Wells (Rene Russo) inherits her late husband’s ball club, Cleveland Indians. But she wants to move the franchise to Miami. But Cleveland’s lease on the Indians has only one escape clause, poor attendance. So, she fields the worst team she can find. But the tables turn when the misfits and losers led by Ricky Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) rally around and fight back. With its light-hearted humour and well-defined action sequences, Major League is a must-watch!
The Fan (1996) It might not have been a commercial success, but The Fan is a gripping thriller that’s let down by its climax. It tells the story of Gil Renard (Robert De Niro) who is a fan obsessed with baseball player Bobby Rayburn (Wesley Snipes). Everything starts falling apart when Rayburn is having the worst season of his career and Renard tries to do everything to help him, but goes too far.

It follows fashion weeks, designers, models and celebs. Their exhaustive gallery has thousands of pictures of celeb parties, red-carpet events and backstage events. Their style file column gives a bit-by-bit analysis of current beauty trends (right from the in-vogue eyebrows!) and designers’ latest collections. Simply hard to miss.

With his digital camera, he started clicking pictures of people on the streets of New York who caught his attention with their fashion sense. He then uploaded these pictures onto his blog. The sartorialist has become a bridge of sorts between fashion houses and the people on the streets, ie, us. It is difficult not only to afford but also carry off outfits worn on ramps but the Sartorialist gives us fashion inspiration from the people of the streets. The Sartorialist is real all the way.

NTR-Srinu Vaitla film titled Badshah?
N
TR’s upcoming film under Srinu Vaitla’s direction will go on floors, early in April. Earlier, the film was titled Action; however, the latest buzz is that the makers are keen on changing the title to Badshah. A few days ago one of the writers of the film, Gopimohan had posted on twitter, “Observed in all the tweets that you people loved Badhshaw title.Conveyed to Director. He said he is positive on Badhshaw title.Lets see (sic).” Kajal Aggarwal is playing the lead role in this film and Ganesh is producing the film. Srinu Vaitla is teaming up with writers Gopimohan, Kona Venkat and music director Thaman, immediately after delivering a blockbuster like Dookudu. The film is touted to be a complete entertainer and if all goes well, it might release by the end of the year. Currently, NTR is busy wrapping up Boyapati Srinu’s Dammu, which will hit the screens in April.

ana, Genelia starrer Naa Ishtam is in the final stages of production. Yesterday, Rana flew to Kuala Lumpur to shoot for his introduction song in the film under the aegis of choreographer Prem Rakshit. He has already completed dubbing his part for the film and rest of the post production is expected to be wrapped up by mid-March. Recently, Rana and Harshvardhan Rane had gone to Kakinada to unveil the first song of the film and we hear that producer Parachuri Kireeti has planned to go to several colleges all over the state to promote the film over the next few weeks. Prakash Tholeti has directed the film and Chakri has composed the music. The film’s audio is going to be launched later this month.
Poola Rangadu surpasses expectations L ast year, after Katha Screenplay Darsakathvam Appalraju turned out to be a dud at the box-office, almost everyone began to wonder if Sunil’s previous hit Maryada Ramanna was a stroke of luck. However, the actor has made a strong comeback with his latest film Poola Rangadu and proved his critics wrong. The film, which was directed by Veerabhadram, was reportedly made with a budget of around `8 crore. We hear that the film has already begun making profits for its makers less than a week after its release. The buzz is that, the film has already grossed more than `8 crore and the sale of satellite rights has propelled this figure to more than `10 crore. Although it’s early to say how much the film might collect in the long run, early estimations suggest that Poola Rangadu might collect anywhere between `16-20 crore, which is a huge figure for Sunil.

The glamour behind the glitz
DHINKA CHIKA Hrithik Roshan: With his moves in Ek pal ka jeena, from his first movie Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Hrithik established himself as ‘The King of Dancing’ in Bollywood. Nobody in the world can move the way this man does! Hrithik managed to captivate the audience with just a suave turning around in the song Khwaaja mere Khwaaja. Mere words cannot describe the impact he created on his fans with his moves in Dhoom 2.

With Ishqiya 2, the dancing diva Madhuri Dixit returns to Bollywood. Today we take a look at some of B-town’s best movers and shakers
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Not many know that this Bachchan Bahu is a trained kathak dancer. When Aishwarya failed to win the hearts of her audiences through her acting, she easily managed to do so through her graceful moves and lavish costumes. If you’re still in doubt, go look up her performances in Nimbooda nimbooda from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Kahin aag lage from Taal, or her racy number Ishq kameena from Shakti.
Maryam Sultana and Darshani Nene feedback@postnoon.com
Shahid Kapoor: Shahid Kapoor, who’s trained under Shiamak Davar before entering the industry is a mind-blowing dancer. Why, he can even give Hrithik a run for his money if given the chance. He was also a background dancer in the movie Taal before he entered the industry. Said to catch the technicalities bang on, this boy is also a very spontaneous dancer.
Katrina Kaif: A few years back, you wouldn’t have even thought of Katrina Kaif as a dancer. Recently, Pandit Birju Maharaj said that “Katrina can only shake, she can’t dance”. But you cannot ignore the fact that she has worked very hard on her dancing abilities. From being a bad actor and a dancer, she’s zoomed ahead to become a successful actor and a sexy dancer. She wowed the audiences with her sensuous moves in Sheila ki jawaani and Chikni chameli and she’s earned her respect.
Helen: Helen Jairag Richardson, the ultimate Item Queen of Bollywood has a record of performing the most solo songs in Indian Film Industry. From Mera naam chin chin chu to Ye mera di, Helen had the remarkable ability to captivate the audience with just her moves.
Shammi Kapoor: Whether it was jumping in the snow with a young Saira Banu in Junglee or dangling from a helicopter in a bathrobe with a bikini-clad Sharmila in An Evening in Paris, Shammi Kapoor could drink all night and dance all day. The first rock-and-roll star of India is perhaps dancing in heaven right now!

As a representative of the Indian film industry, I can only bring the glamour quotient,” Kapoor explained. “We spread smiles and create tears in the name of entertainment. But in whatever small way we can create awareness by partaking in discussion of current topics and happenings back home, we try to. It gives me great pleasure to be here to be able to spearhead that kind of thinking. I’m very happy to be here.” Sanam Arora, CEO of the LSE’s Society for the Promotion of Indian Culture and Ethos said, “I am delighted to have Mr Kapoor with us as our chief guest at the LSE. idya Balan came out of her comfort zone and delivered a blockbuster like The Dirty Picture. And now the actress is keen to do a film on extramarital affairs or a biopic on late prime minister Indira Gandhi. Talking about her choice of scripts, she said, “Action is not something I would want to do. I want to do a nice Arth kind of a film on extramarital affairs, which these days we often get to hear or maybe a biopic on Indira Gandhi.” Post the success of The Dirty Picture, every director is keen to work with Vidya, but when asked which director she would want to work with, she said: “I want to work with Gulzar.” If Gulzar is known for penning melodious lyrics like Mera rang lai lay to peppy Hinglish song Kajra re, he is equally known for his directorial skills which he showed with films like Parichay, Angoor, Maachis and Hu Tu Tu. Irrfan says his work, not PR, got him projects
O
ne of the most versatile actors in Bollywood, Irrfan Khan, who is part of upcoming American film The Amazing Spider-Man, says his work has helped him in getting international projects and not any PR work. “It just happened. I still don’t have a PR. International films didn’t come to me because of PRs. It came to me because of my work. It came to me because I was destined to work there,” Irrfan said. The 49year-old became a known name in the international film circuit with his first ever full-fledged movie role in Asif Kapadia’s The Warrior. The 2001 film was shown at the international film festivals and Irrfan carved a niche for himself. “My limitation is that I don’t know how to do my PR (promote) myself. As an actor, you must know how to do your PR, which I consider is my limitation. When I tried to work on it, it didn’t work for me,” said the actor. IANS

emi Lovato has said that she is avoiding taking up any film jobs until she gets her private life back on track. The singer and former Disney star explained she needs to concentrate on recovering from a stint in rehab before she delves completely back into her work. Lovato has openly battled with image issues and entered rehab in winter 2010 to be treated for depression, an eating disorder and selfharming. She explained that she is worried her problems may resurface if she takes advantage of certain opportunities. She told the Daily Mail’s You magazine, “I know that I could be in a fragile state of mind if I go back in front of the camera; I’m not really confident enough. “The camera adds 10 pounds and I feel like I have too many tattoos right now to go back on screen. I want to act again if they can find a way to cover my tattoos and one day I’d love to be respected as an actress.” Lovato also revealed in the interview that she intends to concentrate on her singing career.

While not much can be said about Salle’s previous films (The Tourist was based on his movie Anthony Zimmer, but he can’t be blamed for that), the pairing of Bloom and Hounsou, and this sounds like it could be a good setup for a nice little thriller. Screen Daily reports that filming will take place in July. Hounsou was previously set to play the Angel of Death in the adaptation of Paradise Lost, but Legendary Pictures decided to scrap the picture and that’s what made the actor available for Zulu.

he Help examines relationships in segregated Sixties Mississippi between the black maids and their wealthy white employers whose children they raised. The film’s catalyst is Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan (Emma Stone), a recent graduate of Ole Miss looking to spark a career in journalism by getting Aibileen ( Viola Davis) and Minny (Octavia Spencer) to confide their feelings about working for white families in a changing South. Skeeter is a tricky part — white girl liberates enslaved black womanhood — but Stone, an exceptional talent, is so subtly effective at showing Skeeter’s naiveté. Aibileen, Skeeter’s best friend’s housekeeper, is the first to open up — to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community.

play interestingly sidesteps politics for the most part and instead concentrates on specific personal injustices — particularly those meted out by Jackson’s Queen Bee, the meticulously-coiffed Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard), whose conniving smallmindedness is neatly summed up in her ongoing campaign for the town’s maids to use separate bathrooms from their employers. The performances in The Help are so strong and so moving that criticising them will be a task. Stone is sparkling as Skeeter; she deftly defuses the role’s potentially condescending overtones, proving that at 22, she’s already a compelling and capable leading lady. Writerdirector Tate Taylor brings out the best in his large cast of women.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Ashwin flouted spirit of game: Mahela T
he Sri Lankan captain says Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin’s controversial “Mankad” dismissal of Lahiru Thirimanne in Brisbane flouted the spirit of the game. Thirimanne survived the dismissal during his innings of 62 in Sri Lanka’s 51-run one-day international win over India at the Gabba on Tuesday, but only after the Indians decided to withdraw their appeal. A Mankad is where the bowler whips off the bails at the non-striker’s end instead of releasing the ball. Ashwin legitimately did this when Thirimanne, who was on 44 at the time, left his crease too early. But after umpires Paul Reiffel and Billy Bowden talked to India’s standin skipper Virender Sehwag and veteran Sachin Tendulkar, the Indians decided to give Thirimanne a reprieve. Jayawardene conceded that Thirimanne had strayed from the crease but said Ashwin’s decision to Mankad him was wrong. “I probably felt there was a little bit of fault in our guy to be honest, but I think in the spirit of the game Sehwag did the right thing (withdrawing the appeal),” Jayawardene said. “I don’t play like that. I would try and keep it nice and clean and tell the umpires to keep an eye on the guy. “I think they did the right thing out there in the middle (when) the senior players got together.” A Mankad dismissal is rare. It is named after Vinoo Mankad, who twice dismissed Australian batsman Bill Brown this way in 1947-48.

Wade’s too hot for Kings
T
he Miami Heat used a fourth-quarter offensive burst to defeat the Sacramento Kings 120-108 behind a 30-point performance from superstar Dwyane Wade on Tuesday. NEW YORK: Wade also had 10 assists. Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers scored 20 points each and LeBron James finished with 18 for Miami, who have won seven straight National Basketball Association games. Jason Thompson finished
with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Tyreke Evans had 21 points and 10 assists for the Kings who have lost six consecutive games. Sacramento has also lost 10 straight in Miami. Miami led by five, 93-88, heading into the fourth quarter but the Kings quickly reduced that to three before the Heat cranked up their offence by going on a 13-2 run. Sacramento outscored Miami 32-26 in the opening quarter but Miami led 57-53 at the half.

Vitali wants to punish uncouth Chisora BERLIN: World heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko wants to grant Dereck Chisora a rematch to ‘punish’ the British fighter for his brawl in Munich with David Haye, but his manager has blocked the idea. Klitschko defended his WBC heavyweight title on Saturday night with a unanimous win over Chisora, but in the post-fight press conference, the Brit traded blows and insults with compatriot and former champion David Haye. Both Chisora, 28, and Haye, 31, are under investigation by German police, who have said the pair could both face prison sentences or fines. Pending the police investiga-
Haye evades Munich cops, dashes off to Las Vegas
W
ith the Munich police powerless to stop him, David Haye emerged from his London bolt hole, evaded the waiting cameramen in a highspeed flit around the M25 to Heathrow and flew out of London to have some “party time” in Las Vegas, The Guardian reported. Had he taken such superb evasive action against Dereck Chisora in the highly charged atmosphere of the press conference room at the Olympiahalle in the early hours of Sunday morning, he would have had no need for subterfuge.
There was nothing, however, that anyone could do to prevent him ignoring repeated demands by Munich police to give his side of the ugly brawl with Chisora, even though he could go to prison if convicted of assault, as could Chisora for threatening behaviour. Munich police said last night it could take a further two weeks to bring Haye back to Germany but, as they have not charged him, he is free to go where he pleases. They have asked Scotland Yard for help. They stopped Chisora at Munich airport on Sunday morning and released him after seven hours. But Haye had already fled the scene of the incident, booked out of his hotel – fearful, he says, that Chisora would deliver on his threat to shoot him – and flew to London, where he went to ground. “We’re going to ask the British to help us but this is not a quick process,” a Munich police spokesman said last night.
tion, Chisora has had part of his fight purse withheld. Having seen Chisora leave the press conference stage to confront Haye, who was working at the fight as a pundit, Klitschko was shocked to hear the pair trade insults and blows with Chisora shouting that he wanted to “shoot” Haye. After Chisora slapped him in the face at the pre-fight weigh-in, then spat water in the face of his brother Wladimir just before the title bout, Vitali Klitschko has said he is appalled by Chisora’s behaviour. “In spirit, I have no need for revenge, but my ego tells me that this man deserves real punishment. I want to knock him out in the ring,” the Ukrainian champion told German daily Die Welt. Klitschko, 40, damaged his left shoulder in the fight and will take up to eight weeks off, but his management moved quickly on Tuesday to pour cold water on any rematch
plans. “A rematch is absolutely inconceivable and won’t happen,” Klitschko’s manager Bernd Boente told SID, an AFP subsidiary. “Of course, Vitali has been affected emotionally, but a fight is not up for discussion and we will not offer Chisora a further platform.” Boente pointed to Chisora’s hearing before the British Boxing Board of Control hearing in London on March 14 — when he could face a life ban — as well as Klitschko’s shoulder injury. “The hearing takes place in London next month when he (Chisora) will be banned for between nine to 12 months,” said Boente. “In addition, he will fall out of the WBC’s top 15 rankings and will have to fight his way back up. “Vitali now needs six to seven weeks of treatment and rehabilitation in Hamburg and Kiev. Then we’ll see.” AFP

Timothy Bradley poses for Manny Pacquiao at a press conference on Tuesday that was held to announce their upcoming World Boxing Organization welterweight championship fight. About the chances of a world title fight with Floyd Mayweather, Pacquiao said they almost inked a deal until the American tried to low-ball him on the split of the pay-per view revenue. Mayweather said he would give Pacquiao a $40 million lump-sum payment if Pacquiao agreed to let Mayweather keep the pay per view earnings for himself. “It was embarrassing to me,” Pacquiao said. “He was trying to take advantage of me.” Estimates are that the pay per view could be around $160 million. Debutant Pontus holds Real
An injury-time goal on his debut by Swedish midfielder Pontus Wernbloom grabbed CSKA Moscow a 1-1 draw with Spanish giants Real Madrid here on Tuesday in their Champions League Last 16 first leg match.
MOSCOW: A goal from Real’s Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in the 28th minute put the nine-time European champions ahead and they looked set for their seventh successive win in this season’s competition until Wernbloom blasted the ball home. “We conceded a goal to a schoolboy’s defensive mistake in the first-half and it cost us a goal,” CSKA coach Leonid Slutsky said. “But late in the second half we put more attacking players onto the pitch and levelled the scores. “In general we played good in defence, while in attack we created several chances. Luckily, we managed to convert one of them. Real of course remain the favourites but now I start to believe that everything is possible.” Real coach Jose Mourinho meanwhile expressed his satisfaction with the result despite the fact that his men missed out on victory. “Anyway it is a good result for us in the away match,” Mourinho said. “But in the return match we will have no other choice but to win.” “CSKA are diffucult opponents and tonight it was a difficult match. But they created few chances tonight, while we missed a pile of opportunities to increase our lead after the break. “In Madrid the weather condi-

Ten Hammers nail hapless Blackpool LONDON: West Ham surged back to the top of the Championship as Sam Allardyce’s 10 men thrashed Blackpool 4-1 despite playing without a specialist goalkeeper for most of the second half on Tuesday. James Tomkins and Nicky Maynard scored two goals in four minutes in the first half to put the Hammers in control at Bloomfield Road, but former England striker Kevin Phillips reduced the deficit just before the break. The clash seemed to have swung Blackpool’s way when West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green was sent off in the 53rd minute for a professional foul on Roman Bednar. However, with no goalkeeper on the bench, Allardyce put on-loan Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury between the posts and he rose to the challege. It helped that Lansbury was largely untroubled by a lacklustre Blackpool attack and second half goals from Gary O’Neill and Ricardo Vaz Te lifted West Ham one point ahead of Southampton with a game in hand.
first chance in the seventh minute. However, Alan Dzagoev’s shot from eight metres went wide and was the hosts’ only opportunity in the first-half. Real replied with a long-range shot by Karim Benzema, which
also went wide forcing Jose Mourinho into an early substitution as the Frenchman pulled a muscle and was replaced by Gonzalo Higuain in the 16th minute. CSKA ‘keeper Sergei Chepchugov pulled off a great double
save a minute later as first he beat away a Higuain effort and was able to get back up and deflect for a corner Sami Khedira’s follow-up. However, he was unable to prevent Ronaldo from opening the scoring, as he drilled home from inside the area after Zoran Tosic failed to clear Fabio Coentrao’s cross from the left. CSKA, who have never lost to a Spanish team before in European competition, poured forward seeking an equaliser but the visitors defence was solid and repelled the hosts attacks. After the interval CSKA continued testing the visitors defence but failed again to create any serious threat to Iker Casillas lacking accuracy in the decisive moments. Meanwhile Real, who were relying on rapid and dangerous counter-attacks missed a host of chances to increase their lead before the one-hour mark. CSKA, who were lacking match practice as the Russian league is on the winter break, nevertheless showed strong character trying hard to pull the scores level but Real looked comfortable. In the 82nd minute the hosts missed a chance to level as Casillas produced a diving save to prevent CSKA midfielder Keisuke Honda’s freekick ending up in the net.
Tevez apologises to the club Racism: Cameroon LONDON: Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez looks set to return from his self-imposed exile after apologising to the club for his conduct in recent months. Tevez has not played for the Premier League leaders since September after falling out with City boss Roberto Mancini following his refusal to warmup during a Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich. The Argentine star returned to his homeland soon after the bust-up and refused to return to Eastlands for more than three months. But Tevez was unable to negotiate a move during the January transfer window, with potential transfers to AC Milan, Inter Milan and Paris SaintGermain all falling through, and he finally flew back to England last week. Mancini, who initially said Tevez was “finished” at the club, has maintained he would only consider the player for selection again after an apology, and the 28-year-old has now bowed to the Italian’s demand.
to hold meeting
LONDON: British Prime Minister David Cameron will meet with football chiefs and antiracism campaigners later Wednesday to address the recent spate of racist incidents that have blighted the national game. Cameron and Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt are to hold a “round table discussion” with football officials and players’ representatives, according to a Downing Street statement. “The government is committed to working with the football community as a whole to address and tackle issues of discrimination, recognising that great progress has been made, but also that there is more to be done across a range of issues,” said the statement. Representatives from the Football Association, the Premier League, the Football League, The Professional Footballers’ Association and the League Managers’ Association are expected to attend along with ex-players John Barnes, Graeme Le Saux, Paul Elliott.
