n NRI, in the City on holiday was attacked by a gang who stole his mobile phone, bike and cash near the Central Library in Afzalgunj on Tuesday night. Mohd Abdul Hakeem, 47, who runs a business in the US, was going back to his home in Moghalpura after attending a party at a friend’s house in Hitec City. When he reached Afzalgunj Road, his Honda Active bike broke down. A group of some four to five men standing nearby came to Hakeem’s assistance. But instead of helping him out, they began assaulting him.

The incident took place between 11.30pm and 12 midnight. Hakeem lay unconscious for over three hours by the roadside. “The gang attacked Hakeem with knives. They stole his bike, mobile phone and

`5,000 before fleeing from the spot. The victim has sustained injuries to his hands, head and jaw. A case has been lodged and we have begun investigations,” said Inspector A Manoj Kumar of Afzalgunj police station.

n a bid to end its continued dependence on the board of directors and representatives from the State government to make regulatory changes, the HMWS&SB has decided to frame its own regulatory authority. This decision was taken after water tariffs were hiked for the first time in nine years. “Despite supplying over 340 MGD of water daily to the GHMC and HMDA limits in Hyderabad, we are still lagging behind financially and are finding it hard to tackle salary hikes, debt clearances and meeting revenue targets,” said J Syamala Rao, MD of HMWS&SB. The HMWS&SB is monitored by a group of directors whose chairman is the CM. The water board has always had an uneasy past as for as revenue is concerned. The board has threatened to discontinue service to the GHMC as it is yet to clear a `1,000 crore bill in expenses. The Administrative Staff

Board supplies 340 MGD water to 7.50 lakh customers — both domestic and nondomestic — from Osmansagar, Himayathsagar reservoirs and Krishna river (phase-I and II). Water board officials are optimistic that the proposal will be accepted soon, and that this move will finally fill the department’s coffers.

inally, George’s long wait for a bride is going to be over soon. George is the lone male giraffe at the Nehru Zoological Park and has been ageing while waiting for a mate for over three years. Zoo authorities had been shopping for a female in different parts of the world in vain. The search only found that other zoos are also in need of a female giraffe. But now Malayasia has offered him a mate. But George is, again, not quite lucky. He has to share the incoming bride (probably named Georgina)

with another male. So what? Seems the thought of George who continues to meditate on the ways of the world in his enclosure. He has seen too many deaths in quick succession of his kin. This one, the only surviving spotted gent of the five brought in from Africa a few years ago is unable to mate and procreate for the lack of a female species in the zoo premises. The 20-ft and 8-year-old George draws great attention of zoo visitors. A giraffe’s lifetime is only 20 years. In this sense he is getting old. He stares boringly at the people who shoot him with camera and comments about his great height. A zoo official, MM Hanifulla

confirmed the arrival of a female giraffe. She will arrive accompanied by her male partner shortly. It has been a hard task, say authorities. Getting female giraffe is becoming a difficult task. But of other animals the predicament is less. They are more easily available. Hanifulla said that the zoo had been successful in replenishing the stock of Cheetahs by securing three of them from the Czech Republic recently in exchange of two lions and five crocodiles. But, getting a giraffe, and that too a female, is no mean task. “The procedure of securing a giraffe is also extremely tedious and long,” he said.

fter successfully securing a female giraffe from a Malaysian zoo as a mate for lonely giraffe George, authorities of the Nehru Zoological Park are now on the lookout to populate the zoo with different kinds of animals — ones that are not indigenous to India. The park’s aim is to be a dynamic one as far as species of animals is concerned. Deputy curator A Shankaran says that they have been trying for over six years to get a zebra from Africa. “Having different kinds of animals in the zoo gives our visitors a more fulfilling experience. Getting animals from other countries is a difficult process. This is why even after six months we have not been able to bring in a zebra,” he said. But the park did have something to cheer about. In May, 25 years of labour bore fruit when cheetahs were brought in from Czechoslovakia. Not just that, two female ostriches were also brought in for the two male ostriches of the zoo. “We are hopeful that they will breed soon,” said Shankaran. With an eye on bringing in more visitors, the natural history museum at the zoo has also been upgraded. The museum shows in detail the different stages of evolution of the Earth, animals, plants and a complete insight into tigers.

However, only a few handful of the FoBs stand out as good examples of infrastructure in the city. The one at LV Prasad Eye Institute is a fine example. But the problem is that these fully equipped FoBs are too few in

number. K Prakash Goud, resident of Masab Tank says, “It is difficult for the aged and the physically handicapped to make use of these FoBs. People have given up on expecting them to be finished in time.” There is however a use that the unfinished FoB has found. It has become a landmark for commuters and motorists.

While buying a new heater, one must keep in mind the budget and usage, as a hasty decision may push you in to unnecessary spending thanks to a plum electricity bill. “Electric water heaters are between `500 (immersion model) to `7,500 depending on the capacity and brand. These heaters may be easy on the wallet in the short run, but one would end up paying an extra monthly electrical bill of around `200 per person (for a single shower at a unit price of `6). If a

Although this amount may seem heavy, one can get the RoI of the extra spending within a year of regular use. The payback may take up to two years with usage during winters and rainy seasons. The complete ROI can be achieved in less than five years without any price comparison. Although, the solar water heater doesn’t require any monthly spending, the cost of maintenance and cleaning of around `1,000 must be incurred every three years. The average life span of these heaters is around 20-25 years, depending on the quality of water. Talking about the space requirements, Naidu says, “A typical solar water heater needs a space of threesquare meters on the rooftop in a non-shadow area. They generate hot water with the variance of 3-5 degrees even in the early hours of a cold winter day, if the water is unused the previous night.” There is increased awareness on solar water heaters among the general public who also want to take an eco-turn. Naidu says that there have also been instances where residents of a group of flats have come together to install large capacity solar water heaters which takes care of the needs of all the homes. “Before buying a solar water heater, ensure you look for MNRE and BIS certification. The brand, reliability and industry experience are also important,” cautions Naidu.

At the Mine Detection and Dogs Centre (MDC) a few kilometres from Kabul's presidential palace, it looks like chaos with dogs yelping and crashing playfully into each other in their playground. A dog handler throws balls and around a dozen puppies streak off in hot pursuit. The dogs catch the balls and proudly fetch them. But it is not a game â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it is the first step in an 18-month training programme that will transform the dogs into highly skilled mine detectors. They will then help to save lives in a country where thousands of people have been killed by old landmines and IEDs used by Taliban. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Using dogs in Afghanistan, which is one of the most heavily-mined countries in the world, is a very efficient way to detect mines," MDC's training manager Abdul Jabar Baser told AFP. "Dogs can find mines faster than humans. Dogs can also find explosives around 13 centimetres (five inches) deep in soil. They can find plastic land mines that cannot be discovered by metal detectors." The centre has around 200 dogs, some of them opera-

tional, some under training. Breeding also takes place at the centre. "The dogs can learn anything you teach them," Baser said. It is not only old mines left after three decades of war that take a toll, roadside bombs used by the Taliban remain one the biggest killers in Afghanistan. The militants use as bombs unused artillery shells, explosives in containers such as pressure cookers and devices made from the common fertilizer, ammonium nitrate. "The mines are made in different countries such as Pakistan, Italy, Russia, China and Iran. There are also NATO's unexploded ordnance that we collect," Baser said. The US-led NATO force has more than 100,000 troops in Afghanistan, but combat soldiers will withdraw by the end of 2014 and hand responsibility for security to Afghan forces. According to a recent UN report, in the first six months of 2012, 1,145 Afghan civilians were killed and around 2,000 were wounded, mostly by roadside bombs. Women and children accounted for about 30 per cent of this year's casualties. NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) says

around 1,800 IED attacks were executed between July and September alone. "The mines and IEDs still hit between 20 and 30 people daily in different parts of the country," MDC's operations manager Shah Wali Ayubi said. "There are still a lot of insecure areas where our teams cannot go... we only clear the abandoned IEDs in some parts of the country. We can only have access

to those areas after the fighting ends there," he said. There are more than a dozen organisations and contractors and around 13,000 deminers working to eliminate forgotten mines in Afghanistan. The MDC also uses heavy machinery and human deminers but dogs are treasured for their powerful sense of smell, and dog teams can clear an area six times faster than humans. "The best thing about this dog is that he can clear the minefield. Those mines which cannot be identified by machines, the dogs can smell them and find them," trainer Nabiullah said while working with his dog. The centre, which also trains

dogs for the police and army, mostly uses German shepherds and Belgian malinois dogs. "In northern parts of the country there are old mines, but in southern parts of the country there are more IEDs and newly planted mines," Baser said. At the centre, the dogs are trained to walk and search for explosives in straight lines. When the dog finds the explosives, it sits, looks at its handler and waits until given the command to return. The proud dog then gets a ball as a reward and plays while the deminer team marks the spot and removes or detonates the mine. "We test them every morning, we trust them 100 per cent whenever they work. If a dog doesn't work well during training, then we don't use that dog that day but replace it with another one," deminer Mohammad Daud said. Deminer dogs can work an average of eight years before they retire, when they are sometimes given away as pets. Funded by international partners, the dog handlers and demining teams are all Afghans. Since 1989, when the Soviets withdrew after a 10year occupation, nearly 700,000 mines and more than 15 million explosive left-overs from decades of war have been destroyed, according to United Nations figures.

DEFENCE India to test ballistic missile interceptor BHUBANESWAR: India is preparing to test a ballistic missile interceptor from a defence base in Odisha Friday, an official said. The indigenous Advanced Air Defence (AAD) endo-atmospheric interceptor missile would be fired from Wheeler Island off the coast near Dhamra in Bhadrak district and kill an incoming ballistic missile to be launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore. “The test is likely to be conducted during the morning hour. But when the Southern Surveyor, which was tasked with identifying fragments of the Australian continental crust submerged in the Coral Sea, steamed to where it was supposed to be, it was nowhere to be found. “We wanted to check it out because the navigation charts on board the ship showed a water depth of 1,400 metres in that area — very deep,” Seton, from the University of Sydney, said. “It’s on Google Earth and other maps so we went to check and there was no island. In the past gambling was seen as something only men did, and it was considered unlady-like to be seen gambling, especially that too in a room filled with men, whisky and smoke. But times have changed and in some countries people don’t even think twice about the presence of a woman in a gambling establishment. Saturday night is my poker night. It’s the one night I can escape from reality and hang out in a room of my peers (and a couple of snakes) and just sit back and have a good time. Our behavior is dictated by our surroundings, at least for those of us who consider ourselves civilized and mannered. So if you are at a wedding and not completely drunk you will most likely behave yourself and refrain from basically being a complete idiot, or at least have your actions interpreted that way. But if you are at a poker table on a Saturday night with a bunch of guys, you have some

leeway to let your inner primal animal loose. Topics of conversation around the table include, of course, gambling, women, partying the night before, sports, poker, who is a thieving bastard, how bad your luck is, alcohol and last but not least dirty jokes. Now this might seem like the typical scene portrayed on television about the happenings around a poker table, and for the most part it is accurate. If one guy decides to screw with another guy through verbal banter, not only is it funny, it is encouraged. There are two particular players, one in his mid 20’s and the other in his mid 70’s that go back and forth as though they are having a lovers’ quarrel, and because of the reaction around the table, they take it to another level. One guy will even go so far as to swear relentlessly at him while still congratulating him when he wins a hand. So what does my not being a sexist and playing poker have to do with this article? As much as I don’t mind having girl(s) sit at the same table, at times it changes the dynamics of the group and ruins my entertainment. The dirty jokes aren’t dirty anymore. A couple of years later she was offered her first series and switched completely from print to electronic media and has never looked back since. Asked if she misses writing Anita says, “Writing will always be with me. iya’s 10-year-old daughter had woken up in the night screaming and shouting. She was inconsolable. On the first night Riya ignored it thinking that it was just another nightmare that was troubling her daughter but then it happened again. Riya’s daughter was suffering from night terrors which differs from the regular nightmares. According to Dr Kalyan Chakravarthy, psychiatrist, Mediciti, “There are two main stages of the sleep cycle- from the REM sleep phase to the NonREM Sleep phase. When this transition does not take place properly it causes night terrors (also known as pava nocturnal). Rapid eye movement sleep (REM

sleep) refers to the normal stage which is characterised by rapid and random movement of the eyes. REM is classified into two categories: tonic and phasic. On the other hand, in Non REM there is usually little or no eye movement during this stage. Dreaming is rare during NREM sleep.

NIGHT TERRORS AND NIGHTMARES Dr Kalyan Chakravarty says, “Nightmares are not nasty or acute. The person tends to remember the nightmare the next time. On the other hand when it comes to night terrors, the person or child is agitated and has a sudden outburst. They do not remember the terror the next day. In case of night terrors it is usually the people around them who notice rather than the person who is

experiencing the night terror. They may observe that the person wakes up startled, shouting loudly and cannot be consoled.” Talking about handling the situation Dr Kalyan mentions that while comforting the person who is experiencing night terrors the consoler must remember that during night terrors the skin sensitivity is the highest so only slight soothing must be provided as touching them with too much force may actually aggravate the problem. The night terrors make the person groggy during the daytime.

CAUSES There could be various causes for night terrors. Dr Kalyan says, “Night terrors could be due to

genetic reasons. When it occurs in adults it could because of depression, stress, anxiety, depression or even middle insomnia. In children, it is generally due to the developing brain hence they usually outgrow the problem.”

OCCURRENCE Dr Kalyan mentions that they are more common among children. Around two in 100 children are affected by night terrors while when it comes to adults it is around 1 in 100.

TREATMENT Dr Kalyan says, “If the incidents are occurring once a week or even once or twice a week it could be a cause for concern. The problem needs treatments if is disturbs the patients family and affects the patients professional or academic life. Treatment involves sleep modification therapy in which they help make the patient relaxed before they go to sleep, stress relieveing techniques and also medicines which help reduce the REM time.

Sleep is prompted by natural cycles of activity in the brain and consists of two basic states: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which consists of Stages 1 through 4. During sleep, the body cycles between non-REM and REM sleep. Typically, people begin the sleep cycle with a period of non-REM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep. REM sleep occurs in four stages while NREM sleep occurs 90 minutes after the REM sleep. The duration may differ from person to person. The percentage of REM sleep is highest during infancy and early childhood. During adolescence and young adulthood, the percentage of REM sleep declines.

WASHINGTON: Don’t be too surprised if the glands that make you sweat could also help heal skin wounds, such as scrapes, burns and ulcers, says a new study. Human skin is rich with millions of sweat glands that help the body cool down after a trip to the gym or on a warm day. They also play a key role in providing cells for recovering skin wounds, according to a University of Michigan Health System research. “Skin ulcers — including those caused by diabetes or bed sores — and other non-healing wounds remain a tremendous burden on health services and communities around the world,” said ILaure Rittie, research assistant professor of dermatology at Michigan Medical School, who led the study. “Treating chronic wounds costs tens of billions of dollars annually in the US alone, and this price tag just keeps rising. Something isn’t working,” Rittie was quoted as saying in the American Journal of Pathology. Now, Michigan researchers believe they have discovered one of the body’s most powerful secret weapons in healing. “By identifying a key process of wound closure, we can examine drug therapies with a new tar-

get in mind: sweat glands, which are very under-studied,” Rittie said, according to a Michigan statement. Previous understanding of wound closure was that new skin cells originate from hair follicles and from intact skin at the edge of the wound. The Michigan findings demonstrate that cells arise from beneath the wound, and suggest that human sweat glands also store an important reservoir of adult stem cells that can quickly be recruited to aid wound healing. “It may be surprising that it’s taken until now to discover the sweat glands’ vital role in wound repair. But there’s a good reason why these specific glands are under-studied sweat glands are unique to humans and absent in the body skin of laboratory animals that are commonly used for wound healing research,” added Rittie. Dance to lift spirits and overcome stress: Study STOCKHOLM: Dancing helps girls overcome low spirits, stress, fatigues and headaches, besides contributing to their mental health and self esteem, says a study. According to the study, dancing also brings greater poise and capacity to deal with daily problems. Anna Duberg, physical therapist at Orebro University Hospital and a doctoral candidate at Orebro University, Sweden, conducted the study. The study included 112 Swedish girls aged between 13 to 19 years. On multiple occasions, these girls had gone to see the school nurse for symptoms such as anxiety and depression, fatigue, headaches, and back, neck, and shoulder pain, according to an Orebro statement. In the study, 59 of the girls were randomized to a group that regularly danced together two days a week and 53 girls to a control group where the girls did not change their living habits. The results indicated that the girls in the dance group, despite all the challenges entailed by being a teenage girl, increased their self-esteem compared with the control group. The positive effect persisted at follow-ups four and eight months after the dance training ended. Ninety one percent of the girls in the dance group felt that the dance study had been a positive experience. In the long run this may also lead to a more healthy lifestyle. IANS

here are many moments in fashion that get me excited. Most are revolved around meeting people who are deeply absorbed in creation and passionate about their craft. Speaking of craft and passion, Péro is a young brand that has made a name for itself because of their clear ideology and design directions. “At péro we believe in the organic evolution of design through experimenting

with traditional techniques and locally available skills.” reads the SpringSummer 2013 note. The clothes are an amalgamation of different skill sets mostly form India, taking design inspirations from what is seen on the streets and villages. This is about the day I spent with the founder and creative head of Péro — Aneeth Arora. A graduate of NID Ahmedabad and NIFT Mumbai. More than a fashion designer Aneeth is also an anthropologist in my opinion. Her knowledge of the local crafts and Indian cultural references make you want to live in her world and soak in the vast education. The first time I came to know more about the brand was when I was covering the British Council Awards where Aneeth was awarded 2011's Young Creative Fashion Entrepreneur. Her designs are creative and make a viable business model that gives steady income to local artisans and women who work from home in their villages. Here is a feature done in collaboration with photographer Zacharie Rabehi who has travelled in remote locations within India to shoot humankind. Though he has not shot “fashion” before, his portrait images of the Gujarati and Rajasthani people made it clear that

The garments seen on the hanger or on the runway models entice you to wear them yourself. Her style is easy and tailored perfectly for the modern gypsy. Well ‘gypsy’ only because you like to collect things from the past and pick up different items from the places you visit. Because you want your clothes to reflect an idea which is more than something ‘shiny and tight’. Péro clothes are far from costumey or tribal. The techniques are handpicked and put together in a way that could be worn in Europe (and most are) or to a religious place in India. This is one name that will only grow bigger and make us prouder to be Indian.

How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

enced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so

on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

The suspension follows Tuesday's medical commission hearing at France Galop's headquarters in Paris into Dettori's positive test for an as yet unconfirmed banned substance when he was riding at Longchamp on September 16. being reviewed by France Galop's disciplinary stewards who will decide what if any further action to take in early December. A France Galop statement confirmed: "Following yesterday's examination of the file and after having duly notified the jockey Lanfranco Dettori of its decision, the Medical Committee has temporarily suspended the said jockey from riding in races in France, based on medical grounds." SAO PAULO: After helping his Red Bull team claim a stunning third consecutive constructors’ world championship in Texas last weekend, defending drivers’ champion Sebastian Vettel will seek, once again, to become the youngest triple champion in Formula One history in this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix. In his 101st race, the 25-yearold German has a clear goal — to finish in the top four and thereby make it impossible for his only rival Fernando Alonso of Ferrari to overhaul his 13 points deficit and take his own third title. On paper, for Vettel, it sounds simple enough after a sequence of results that recently saw him reel off four straight wins before finishing third in Abu Dhabi, after starting in the pit lane, and then second in Austin last Sunday. But he knows that Alonso, 31, and Ferrari will do all they possibly can, within the rules, to seize the Spaniard’s first title triumph since he joined the team. He will be aware, too, of the threat from both McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button in the season finale. Hamilton, in particular, has made it clear he wants to mark the 20th and final race of the year and of his career with McLaren on a high note as he races in their colours for the 110th time before transferring to Mercedes next year. “Brazil has been the scene of some epic races for me during my time at McLaren and, for many reasons, this weekend will be a very big race for me,” said

Warner, Clarke smash tons It was a rousing fightback by Australia after they lost three wickets in the morning session as South Africa suffered two injuries.

ADELAIDE: David Warner bludgeoned a quickfire century and Michael Clarke (right) also reached three figures on Thursday as Australia went after the South African bowlers in the second Test in Adelaide. 2013-14 dates unveiled SYDNEY: England will play five Tests, five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals in their 2013-14 Ashes campaign in Australia, Cricket Australia said on Thursday. The Test series begins at Brisbane’s Gabba ground on November 21-25 and finishes in Sydney from January 3-7 in 2014. The other Test matches will take place in Adelaide (December 5-9), Perth (December 13-17) and Melbourne (December 26-30).
