ast year we had reported how peers and doctors were demanding that there should be a change in societal mindset when it comes to a girl being sexually harassed. In most cases it is the girl who apart from the harassment is subjected to living with a tainted image for the rest of her life while it should actually be the tormentor who should face such a situation.

n a bid to end its continued dependence on the board of directors and representatives from the State government to make regulatory changes, the HMWS&SB has decided to frame its own regulatory authority. This decision was taken after water tariffs were hiked for the first time in nine years. “Despite supplying over 340 MGD of water daily to the GHMC and HMDA limits in Hyderabad, we are still lagging behind financially and are finding it hard to tackle salary hikes, debt clearances and meeting revenue targets,” said J Syamala Rao, MD of HMWS&SB. The HMWS&SB is monitored by a group of directors whose chairman is the CM. The water board has always had an uneasy past as for as revenue is concerned. The board has threatened to discontinue service to the GHMC as it is yet to clear a `1,000 crore bill in expenses. The Administrative Staff

Board supplies 340 MGD water to 7.50 lakh customers — both domestic and nondomestic — from Osmansagar, Himayathsagar reservoirs and Krishna river (phase-I and II). Water board officials are optimistic that the proposal will be accepted soon, and that this move will finally fill the department’s coffers.

College of India (ASCI) has been entrusted with the task of preparing the proposal, and will submit this to the MA&UD, said Rao. “Once the ASCI submits the proposal, we will forward it to the MA&UD department for approval. The State government has to amend the HMWS&SB Act to constitute a water regu-

latory authority,” the HMWS&SB chief said. The Water Board’s decision of constituting a regulatory authority comes in the wake of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission being setup to address the many issues with electricity transmission and distribution bodies in the State. TDP to woo unhappy leaders The increasing exodus of unhappy party leaders has had the TDP heads worried. They are now going all out to convince the leaders to stay in the party by offering them plum positions if the TDP wins the polls. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

S

hocked at the continuous exodus of leaders from the party especially at a time when its party president is on a marathon Padayatra, the main opposition Telugu Desam initiated steps to put a full stop to it. Since the 2009 assembly elections, a total of 14 TDP MLAs and scores of party leaders left the party and joined parties like YSR Congress and TRS. In the last one month alone four party MLAs have left the party sending shock waves to the party. The top brass of the party have sprung into action to convince the unhappy leader, and fence sitters who have already made up their mind to quit the party by promising them lucrative posts. These posts include giving them MLA tickets or ministerial berths if the party bounced back to power after the next General Elections and nominating them to MLC and various constitutional posts like SC, ST, BC and minorities commission chairpersons’ posts.

The top party leaders like former ministers G Muddu Krishnama Naidu, Dadi Veerabadhra Rao, Mandava

Fissures in Cong over ‘mafia don’ comment Congress leaders react to Union tribal welfare minister’s statements on Botsa Satyanarayana and Kiran Kumar Reddy. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

C

ongress leaders from Andhra Pradesh are on the attack against Union tribal welfare minister Kishore Chandra Deo, two days after an 11-page letter purportedly written by him to the Congress Party high command came to light. In the letter, Deo reportedly said that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is “ineffective” and that PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana is a “liquor and mafia don”. Many Congressmen have termed this as “unfortunate” and “far from the truth”. Though the Union minister has publicly

the unhappy party leaders and ensuring that these group does not the cross the fence. A senior party leader involved in this exercise confirmed the news and said that the party was left with no option but to convince the leaders to stay put in the party. He reasoned that if the exodus of leaders continues, the party would get weak in the districts. “It is a tricky situation for us. Initially, we thought only a few unhappy leaders would leave the party. But the situation is becoming worse with each passing day. There is no option left for us but to intervene to check the trend,” he said. N Chandrababu Naidu reportedly directed these leaders to leave no stone unturned in keeping the party flock intact as the exodus of leaders would send wrong message in the public. The modus operandi adopted by these top rung leaders was to take the help of local party leaders in various districts like district party presidents and assembly constituency incharges in executing their objective.

denied writing the letter, the leaders from the State are not ready to buy his argument. Speaking to Postnoon, Reddy’s supporter and APCC general secretary Abid Rasool Khan said that Deo’s comments are not in

the interest of the party. “I disagree with the method Deo used to voice his concern. Both the CM and PCC president are performing their duty as per the expectations of party high command. If he felt that was any wrongdoing, he should have brought it to the notice of the party president. There was no need to leak the letter to the press,” Khan said. Forests minister S Vijayarama Raju echoed this sentiment and said that this will further weaken the party in the State. “There is no truth in the complaint. A section of leaders with vested interests are trying to malign the CM and PCC president’s image,” he said.

ANIMAL MATTERS

ZOO REVAMP

Lonely George to wed Georgina soon! After a long wait of nearly three years, authorities at the Nehru Zoological Park were finally able to find a mate for their lone giraffe. PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com

F

inally, George’s long wait for a bride is going to be over soon. George is the lone male giraffe at the Nehru Zoological Park and has been ageing while waiting for a mate for over three years. Zoo authorities had been shopping for a female in different parts of the world in vain. The search only found that other zoos are also in need of a female giraffe. But now Malayasia has offered him a mate. But George is, again, not quite lucky. He has to share the incoming bride (probably named Georgina)

with another male. So what? Seems the thought of George who continues to meditate on the ways of the world in his enclosure. He has seen too many deaths in quick succession of his kin. This one, the only surviving spotted gent of the five brought in from Africa a few years ago is unable to mate and procreate for the lack of a female species in the zoo premises. The 20-ft and 8-year-old George draws great attention of zoo visitors. A giraffe’s lifetime is only 20 years. In this sense he is getting old. He stares boringly at the people who shoot him with camera and comments about his great height. A zoo official, MM Hanifulla

confirmed the arrival of a female giraffe. She will arrive accompanied by her male partner shortly. It has been a hard task, say authorities. Getting female giraffe is becoming a difficult task. But of other animals the predicament is less. They are more easily available. Hanifulla said that the zoo had been successful in replenishing the stock of Cheetahs by securing three of them from the Czech Republic recently in exchange of two lions and five crocodiles. But, getting a giraffe, and that too a female, is no mean task. “The procedure of securing a giraffe is also extremely tedious and long,” he said.

The park’s aim is to be a dynamic one M NAZIMUDDIN md.nazim@postnoon.com

A

fter successfully securing a female giraffe from a Malaysian zoo as a mate for lonely giraffe George, authorities of the Nehru Zoological Park are now on the lookout to populate the zoo with different kinds of animals — ones that are not indigenous to India. The park’s aim is to be a dynamic one as far as species of animals is concerned. Deputy curator A Shankaran says that they have been trying for over six years to get a zebra from Africa. “Having different kinds of animals in the zoo gives our visitors a more fulfilling experience. Getting animals from other countries is a difficult process. This is why even after six months we have not been able to bring in a zebra,” he said. But the park did have something to cheer about. In May, 25 years of labour bore fruit when cheetahs were brought in from Czechoslovakia. Not just that, two female ostriches were also brought in for the two male ostriches of the zoo. “We are hopeful that they will breed soon,” said Shankaran. With an eye on bringing in more visitors, the natural history museum at the zoo has also been upgraded. The museum shows in detail the different stages of evolution of the Earth, animals, plants and a complete insight into tigers.

abour minister Danam Nagender has lambasted Union minister Kishore Chandra Deo for writing to Congress president Sonia Gandhi belittling Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and the PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana. Talking to the media here on Wednesday, Danam sarcastically said that everyone in the Congress was vying to become either the chief minister or the PCC chief before the next elections. He said that it would be better if they remembered that the two posts carry crowns of thorns with them. He said that some leaders do not even know where Gandhi Bhavan (State Congress headquarters) was and staff and other leaders at Gandhi Bhavan also would not recognise leaders like Kishore Chandra Deo. He said it was surprising that such people were criticising Kiran Kumar Reddy and Botcha Satyanarayana. He has questioned the Union minister to state who would hold responsi-

bility if the Congress was defeated in the next General Elections. Danam has advised the Union minister that it was improper on his part to make such comments when the party was passing through a difficult phase. He said that leaders like Kishore Chandra Deo confine themselves to Delhi and had no concern for the local people. Stating that it was wrong to mislead the party leadership for selfish ends, Danam said 90 per cent of Congress did not know where Gandhi Bhavan was. NSS

Jayaraj Kennedy, additional commissioner of Advertising wing said, “The contract for finishing the escalator and elevator designed as a part of the FoB was supposed to be finished long back. However, we have leased out another two months time for the project to finish. After which,

we will begin calling tenders for ad-hoardings of 6 feet scale on the FoB.” Officials however are doubtful of the project being completed in the near future. Of the total 19 FoBs planned for construction at various parts of the City, only 12 have seen light. The reason being the many departmental politics within the municipal

body and the low morale of the officers concerned, say departmental heads. Other officials from the advertising and illumination wing admit that if the tender system were followed for completion of projects such as these, the time taken for cost recovery would be small and the project would be finished soon. “It is so easy and streamlined to

work with the tenders system, but the corporation is yet to accept this proposal,” says Jayaraj Kennedy. However, only a few handful of the FoBs stand out as good examples of infrastructure in the city. The one at LV Prasad Eye Institute is a fine example. But the problem is that these fully equipped FoBs are too few in

number. K Prakash Goud, resident of Masab Tank says, “It is difficult for the aged and the physically handicapped to make use of these FoBs. People have given up on expecting them to be finished in time.” There is however a use that the unfinished FoB has found. It has become a landmark for commuters and motorists.

APSRTC’s CNG project takes a hit

Due to a shortage of CNG supply in the City and a delay in implementing the project, the APSRTC is yet to introduce more CNG buses, after the first phase of 110 vehicles. M NAZIMUDDIN md.nazim@postnoon.com

The cost of CNG is also lower when compared to diesel or petrol. Vehicles that use CNG emit 80% less harmful gases than gasoline.

A

s the population of the City grows, so does the pollution level. To tackle this hazard, 350 CNG buses were introduced in Hyderabad. But this has bought little respite due to a delay in implementing the project and a shortage of Compressed Natural Gas, 30 buses were converted to diesel and only 110 CNG buses ply. “In spite of a severe shortage of CNG, we have managed to

keep all the 110 buses on road. As there is no guarantee of a steady supply in the future, the introduction of more CNG buses has been kept on hold,” said

APSRTC executive director Koteshwar Rao. But can the City afford this delay? Most certainly not, says environmentalist J Prakash

Nimba. “The CNG system should be implemented on high priority basis. Although the government has restricted the entry of heavy vehicles during the day to ease traffic, we are exposed to

harmful levels of diesel at night. This directly causes cancer as even trees can’t help offset the harm. It is critical that the government introduce more CNG vehicles,” he said. CNG is a natural gas which remains clear, is odourless and non-corrosive. It is lighter than air and quickly dissipates if it leaks from gas tanks or storage containers. The cost of CNG is also lower when compared to diesel or petrol. Vehicles that use CNG emit 80 per cent less harmful gases than gasoline vehicles.

Internet control debate

WASHINGTON: Google has jumped into the debate over a UN telecom gathering set to review regulations affecting the Internet, claiming it is “the wrong place” to make decisions about the future of the Web. In a posting on its “take action” blog this week, Google said the December gathering of the UN’s International Telecommunications Union comes amid “a growing backlash on Internet freedom.”

Easy on your pocket, and environment Nothing can replace a hot shower, but why let this burden your electricity bill? When it comes to being economical and green, solar water heaters far outdo electrical heaters.

W

inter is here — a season for, if nothing else, nice long hot showers. But spare a thought this year to how much that soothing shower hurts your wallet. For a buyer, there is a range of electric and solar water heaters available in the market in different capacities. While buying a new heater, one must keep in mind the budget and usage, as a hasty decision may push you in to unnecessary spending thanks to a plum electricity bill. “Electric water heaters are between `500 (immersion model) to `7,500 depending on the capacity and brand. These heaters may be easy on the wallet in the short run, but one would end up paying an extra monthly electrical bill of around `200 per person (for a single shower at a unit price of `6). If a

Although, the solar water heater doesn’t require monthly spending, the cost of maintenance `1,000 must be incurred every 3 years. family consists of at least five people, this cost rises to more than `1,000 per month for a lifetime,” says P Rama Krishna Naidu, proprietor, Silicon Solar Systems. What discourages many from opting for solar water heaters is the initial one-time cost. “Solar heaters are in the range of `16,000 (100 litre) and `28,000 (200 litre), after 30 per cent government subsidy. A 200 litre capacity water heater is apt for a family of six. Once you install a solar heater you don’t have to worry about a strain on your bills. And it is eco-friendly,” Naidu adds. If there is heavy usage, the pay-

back period or return on the investment (ROI) is fast. There is also an option of connecting the solar water system to the kitchen and additional toilets based on capacity. For instance, if one buys two electric water heaters for two bathrooms, it would cost `15,000. However, a 200 litre capacity solar water heater for two bathrooms can be got for an additional `12,000. Although this amount may seem heavy, one can get the RoI of the extra spending within a year of regular use. The payback may take up to two years with usage during winters and rainy seasons. The complete ROI can be achieved in less than five years without any price comparison. Although, the solar water heater doesn’t require any monthly spending, the cost of maintenance and cleaning of around `1,000 must be incurred every three years. The average life span of these heaters is around 20-25 years, depending on the quality of water. Talking about the space requirements, Naidu says, “A typical solar water heater needs a space of threesquare meters on the rooftop in a non-shadow area. They generate hot water with the variance of 3-5 degrees even in the early hours of a cold winter day, if the water is unused the previous night.” There is increased awareness on solar water heaters among the general public who also want to take an eco-turn. Naidu says that there have also been instances where residents of a group of flats have come together to install large capacity solar water heaters which takes care of the needs of all the homes. “Before buying a solar water heater, ensure you look for MNRE and BIS certification. The brand, reliability and industry experience are also important,” cautions Naidu.

TALIBAN SUICIDE ATTACK KILLS TWO IN KABUL

A suicide bomber blew himself up near a NATO base in Kabul's heavily-fortified diplomatic district on Wednesday, killing two Afghan security guards and wounding two government officials, police said. The Taliban, leading an insurgency against USled troops and the Afghan government, claimed responsibility.

Man's best friend takes on Afghanistan's enemy EMAL HAIDARY Agence France-Presse KABUL: As NATO forces gear up to withdraw, Afghans are preparing to counter one of their deadliest enemies using man's best friend: dogs. At the Mine Detection and Dogs Centre (MDC) a few kilometres from Kabul's presidential palace, it looks like chaos with dogs yelping and crashing playfully into each other in their playground. A dog handler throws balls and around a dozen puppies streak off in hot pursuit. The dogs catch the balls and proudly fetch them. But it is not a game — it is the first step in an 18-month training programme that will transform the dogs into highly skilled mine detectors. They will then help to save lives in a country where thousands of people have been killed by old landmines and IEDs used by Taliban. “Using dogs in Afghanistan, which is one of the most heavily-mined countries in the world, is a very efficient way to detect mines," MDC's training manager Abdul Jabar Baser told AFP. "Dogs can find mines faster than humans. Dogs can also find explosives around 13 centimetres (five inches) deep in soil. They can find plastic land mines that cannot be discovered by metal detectors." The centre has around 200 dogs, some of them opera-

tional, some under training. Breeding also takes place at the centre. "The dogs can learn anything you teach them," Baser said. It is not only old mines left after three decades of war that take a toll, roadside bombs used by the Taliban remain one the biggest killers in Afghanistan. The militants use as bombs unused artillery shells, explosives in containers such as pressure cookers and devices made from the common fertilizer, ammonium nitrate. "The mines are made in different countries such as Pakistan, Italy, Russia, China and Iran. There are also NATO's unexploded ordnance that we collect," Baser said. The US-led NATO force has more than 100,000 troops in Afghanistan, but combat soldiers will withdraw by the end of 2014 and hand responsibility for security to Afghan forces. According to a recent UN report, in the first six months of 2012, 1,145 Afghan civilians were killed and around 2,000 were wounded, mostly by roadside bombs. Women and children accounted for about 30 per cent of this year's casualties. NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) says

around 1,800 IED attacks were executed between July and September alone. "The mines and IEDs still hit between 20 and 30 people daily in different parts of the country," MDC's operations manager Shah Wali Ayubi said. "There are still a lot of insecure areas where our teams cannot go... we only clear the abandoned IEDs in some parts of the country. We can only have access

to those areas after the fighting ends there," he said. There are more than a dozen organisations and contractors and around 13,000 deminers working to eliminate forgotten mines in Afghanistan. The MDC also uses heavy machinery and human deminers but dogs are treasured for their powerful sense of smell, and dog teams can clear an area six times faster than humans. "The best thing about this dog is that he can clear the minefield. Those mines which cannot be identified by machines, the dogs can smell them and find them," trainer Nabiullah said while working with his dog. The centre, which also trains

dogs for the police and army, mostly uses German shepherds and Belgian malinois dogs. "In northern parts of the country there are old mines, but in southern parts of the country there are more IEDs and newly planted mines," Baser said. At the centre, the dogs are trained to walk and search for explosives in straight lines. When the dog finds the explosives, it sits, looks at its handler and waits until given the command to return. The proud dog then gets a ball as a reward and plays while the deminer team marks the spot and removes or detonates the mine. "We test them every morning, we trust them 100 per cent whenever they work. If a dog doesn't work well during training, then we don't use that dog that day but replace it with another one," deminer Mohammad Daud said. Deminer dogs can work an average of eight years before they retire, when they are sometimes given away as pets. Funded by international partners, the dog handlers and demining teams are all Afghans. Since 1989, when the Soviets withdrew after a 10year occupation, nearly 700,000 mines and more than 15 million explosive left-overs from decades of war have been destroyed, according to United Nations figures.

Oz experts ‘undiscover’ Sandy Island SYDNEY: A South Pacific island identified on Google Earth and world maps does not exist, according to Australian scientists who went searching for the mystery landmass during a geological expedition. The sizeable phantom island in the Coral Sea is shown as Sandy Island on Google Earth and Google maps, supposedly midway between Australia and New Caledonia. The Times Atlas of the World appears to identify it as Sable Island and according to Dr Maria Seton the weather maps used by the Southern Surveyor, an Australian maritime research vessel, also say it is there. But when the Southern Surveyor, which was tasked with identifying fragments of the Australian continental crust submerged in the Coral Sea, steamed to where it was supposed to be, it was nowhere to be found. “We wanted to check it out because the navigation charts on board the ship showed a water depth of 1,400 metres in that area — very deep,” Seton, from the University of Sydney, said. “It’s on Google Earth and other maps so we went to check and there was no island. We’re really puzzled. It’s quite bizarre. “How did it find its way onto the maps? We just don’t know, but we plan to follow up and find out.” AFP

ordan is in for turbulent times and more protests unless the government makes good a pledge to implement much-needed political and economic reform, analysts warned. But they stressed that there is no fear of a regime collapse, despite calls by youth protesters angry at fuel hikes last week for King Abdullah II to go. "We are living a real, dangerous and deep political and economic crisis," said Mohammad Abu Rumman, analyst at the University of Jordan's Centre for Strategic Studies. "The country has managed to overcome the first wave of unusual protests but the reasons, motivations and conditions of the crisis are still around us, fed by mounting political tension, poverty and unemployment." Violent rioting, protests and vandalism broke out nationwide last week after the government raised fuel prices by up to 53 per cent, with thousands of demonstrators making unprecedented calls for the king to leave. The unrest has killed a man and wounded 71, while dozens have been arrested and more than 100 have been charged with "anti-regime incitement, rioting and illegal gathering." Although the Islamists took part in the demonstrations, they steered clear from joining other protesters in calling for the king to go. The Muslim Brotherhood insists that it does not seek Abdullah's ouster. They are demanding instead that he cancel price hikes, implement more reforms, and postpone a snap general election called for January 23, which Islamists have vowed to boycott. AFP

N

ow I don’t want to come across as sexist in this article; hence I am stating this at the beginning: I am not sexist. In the past gambling was seen as something only men did, and it was considered unlady-like to be seen gambling, especially that too in a room filled with men, whisky and smoke. But times have changed and in some countries people don’t even think twice about the presence of a woman in a gambling establishment. Saturday night is my poker night. It’s the one night I can escape from reality and hang out in a room of my peers (and a couple of snakes) and just sit back and have a good time. Our behavior is dictated by our surroundings, at least for those of us who consider ourselves civilized and mannered. So if you are at a wedding and not completely drunk you will most likely behave yourself and refrain from basically being a complete idiot, or at least have your actions interpreted that way. But if you are at a poker table on a Saturday night with a bunch of guys, you have some

leeway to let your inner primal animal loose. Topics of conversation around the table include, of course, gambling, women, partying the night before, sports, poker, who is a thieving bastard, how bad your luck is, alcohol and last but not least dirty jokes. Now this might seem like the typical scene portrayed on television about the happenings around a poker table, and for the most part it is accurate. If one guy decides to screw with another guy through verbal banter, not only is it funny, it is encouraged. There are two particular players, one in his mid 20’s and the other in his mid 70’s that go back and forth as though they are having a lovers’ quarrel, and because of the reaction around the table, they take it to another level. One guy will even go so far as to swear relentlessly at him while still congratulating him when he wins a hand. So what does my not being a sexist and playing poker have to do with this article? As much as I don’t mind having girl(s) sit at the same table, at times it changes the dynamics of the group and ruins my entertainment. The dirty jokes aren’t dirty anymore. No one is really calling anyone else names. We pretty much have to behave ourselves. I spend 163 hours a week behaving myself, I’d like five

Just like women don’t really want us around when they do girly things, I think we should be extended the same

Now for a little risqué joke: Q: What are a man's three favourite games? A. Checker, chess, and poker (if you didn't get it say it quickly to yourself).

ou’d think Delhi, Mumbai, Manila, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur would have been done and dusted as popular haunts on the tourist circuit. But before ennui sets in, Anita Kapoor adds a new dimension to these metropolises as she takes the path less travelled in Go Asia minus the stereotypes of Asian exotica. What you get instead are insights into these cities from the inside out through the eyes of local provocateurs who are changing up their cities in big and small ways. And Anita goes all out to bring you that experience even if it includes hanging out in the by-lanes of old Delhi to spend time with famed set designer Aradhana Seth, meeting members of the Delhi band Advaita, zipping over Neemrana Fort to get a bird’s-eye view or taking an early morning bicycle ride through the streets of old Mumbai to appreciate its Victorian architecture. Shares Anita, “The greatest challenge while filming anywhere is in ensuring you are doing justice to the stories you’re bringing to life on screen. It helps that I absolutely enjoy spending time in different countries, talking to its people, eating their food, and understanding their way of life. It’s important to tell authentic stories that appeal to everyone: that’s what makes them fun to watch. The opportunities to travel are immense these days;

whether one decides to live it up, or budget it down. Go Asia is a collection of ideas and opportunities to delve into Asian cities as a participant — not just a spectator.” And as someone who’s willingly participated in many such

experiences, Anita recounts learning to dance the pasodoble from one of Manila’s foremost experts and then performing that very evening in front of a crowd of the cities biggest ballroom dancing enthusiasts. Meeting Thailand’s only west-

ern trained opera singer and singing in the same park where the Bangkok siege had taken place during the cities riots: “Surreal, contradictory, exciting. That is how I see Asia.” Filming the show came with its own share of surprises as Anita recollects, “I fell off my bike in Mumbai — which is a rather scary aspect seeing as the morning traffic was just making its presence felt. I practiced the pasodoble opener in Manila several times and still used the wrong hand in the finale. I think these make for great moments.” A media person based in Singapore, Anita used to be the editor of a high-profile lifestyle magazine before she won the Discovery Channel search for a Singapore host. A couple of years later she was offered her first series and switched completely from print to electronic media and has never looked back since. Asked if she misses writing Anita says, “Writing will always be with me. I do miss it sometimes, but there are plenty of avenues for word release!” She’s successfully hosted Lonely Planet Stressbuster, Can you Serve Season 2, Exotic Escapades and AXN’s first luxury lifestyle reality series Ultimate Escape among others. She’s also a much sought-after emcee for corporate and lifestyle events in Singapore and around the region. If you’re wondering where Anita’s gung-ho attitude and joie de vivre for all her projects stem from, she offers, “I am an optimistic realist?” Watch Go Asia with Anita Kapoor, TLC at 9pm on Fridays.

NIGHT TERRORS

19

Night terrors bothering you?

Many are known to awaken suddenly in the middle of the night screaming and shouting due to night terrors. This may in turn affect their day-to-day life. ANISHAA KUMAR

Anishaa.k@postnoon.com

R

iya’s 10-year-old daughter had woken up in the night screaming and shouting. She was inconsolable. On the first night Riya ignored it thinking that it was just another nightmare that was troubling her daughter but then it happened again. Riya’s daughter was suffering from night terrors which differs from the regular nightmares. According to Dr Kalyan Chakravarthy, psychiatrist, Mediciti, “There are two main stages of the sleep cycle- from the REM sleep phase to the NonREM Sleep phase. When this transition does not take place properly it causes night terrors (also known as pava nocturnal). Rapid eye movement sleep (REM

sleep) refers to the normal stage which is characterised by rapid and random movement of the eyes. REM is classified into two categories: tonic and phasic. On the other hand, in Non REM there is usually little or no eye movement during this stage. Dreaming is rare during NREM sleep.

NIGHT TERRORS AND NIGHTMARES Dr Kalyan Chakravarty says, “Nightmares are not nasty or acute. The person tends to remember the nightmare the next time. On the other hand when it comes to night terrors, the person or child is agitated and has a sudden outburst. They do not remember the terror the next day. In case of night terrors it is usually the people around them who notice rather than the person who is

ANEWS PP-LYBRIEFS YOURSELF

experiencing the night terror. They may observe that the person wakes up startled, shouting loudly and cannot be consoled.” Talking about handling the situation Dr Kalyan mentions that while comforting the person who is experiencing night terrors the consoler must remember that during night terrors the skin sensitivity is the highest so only slight soothing must be provided as touching them with too much force may actually aggravate the problem. The night terrors make the person groggy during the daytime.

CAUSES There could be various causes for night terrors. Dr Kalyan says, “Night terrors could be due to

genetic reasons. When it occurs in adults it could because of depression, stress, anxiety, depression or even middle insomnia. In children, it is generally due to the developing brain hence they usually outgrow the problem.”

OCCURRENCE Dr Kalyan mentions that they are more common among children. Around two in 100 children are affected by night terrors while when it comes to adults it is around 1 in 100.

REM and NREM

TREATMENT Dr Kalyan says, “If the incidents are occurring once a week or even once or twice a week it could be a cause for concern. The problem needs treatments if is disturbs the patients family and affects the patients professional or academic life. Treatment involves sleep modification therapy in which they help make the patient relaxed before they go to sleep, stress relieveing techniques and also medicines which help reduce the REM time.

Sleep is prompted by natural cycles of activity in the brain and consists of two basic states: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which consists of Stages 1 through 4. During sleep, the body cycles between non-REM and REM sleep. Typically, people begin the sleep cycle with a period of non-REM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep. REM sleep occurs in four stages while NREM sleep occurs 90 minutes after the REM sleep. The duration may differ from person to person. The percentage of REM sleep is highest during infancy and early childhood. During adolescence and young adulthood, the percentage of REM sleep declines.

Otherwise it is categorized as chronic, and may last over 3 weeks. The chronic form occurs mostly in middle age.

DID YOU KNOW? 300mn cells die every minute Three hundred million cells die in the human body every minute. While that sounds like a lot, it’s really just a small fraction of the cells that are in the human body. Estimates have placed the total number of cells in the body at 10-50 trillion so you can afford to lose a few hundred million.

RESEARCH

STUDY

Sweat glands help heal wounds According to a Michigan Health System Research, sweat glands not only help the body cool down but also play a key role in providing cells for recovering skin wounds.

WASHINGTON: Don’t be too surprised if the glands that make you sweat could also help heal skin wounds, such as scrapes, burns and ulcers, says a new study. Human skin is rich with millions of sweat glands that help the body cool down after a trip to the gym or on a warm day. They also play a key role in providing cells for recovering skin wounds, according to a University of Michigan Health System research. “Skin ulcers — including those caused by diabetes or bed sores — and other non-healing wounds remain a tremendous burden on health services and communities around the world,” said ILaure Rittie, research assistant professor of dermatology at Michigan Medical School, who led the study. “Treating chronic wounds costs tens of billions of dollars annually in the US alone, and this price tag just keeps rising. Something isn’t working,” Rittie was quoted as saying in the American Journal of Pathology. Now, Michigan researchers believe they have discovered one of the body’s most powerful secret weapons in healing. “By identifying a key process of wound closure, we can examine drug therapies with a new tar-

get in mind: sweat glands, which are very under-studied,” Rittie said, according to a Michigan statement. Previous understanding of wound closure was that new skin cells originate from hair follicles and from intact skin at the edge of the wound. The Michigan findings demonstrate that cells arise from beneath the wound, and suggest that human sweat glands also store an important reservoir of adult stem cells that can quickly be recruited to aid wound healing. “It may be surprising that it’s taken until now to discover the sweat glands’ vital role in wound repair. But there’s a good reason why these specific glands are under-studied sweat glands are unique to humans and absent in the body skin of laboratory animals that are commonly used for wound healing research,” added Rittie. Dance to lift spirits and overcome stress: Study STOCKHOLM: Dancing helps girls overcome low spirits, stress, fatigues and headaches, besides contributing to their mental health and self esteem, says a study. According to the study, dancing also brings greater poise and capacity to deal with daily problems. Anna Duberg, physical therapist at Orebro University Hospital and a doctoral candidate at Orebro University, Sweden, conducted the study. The study included 112 Swedish girls aged between 13 to 19 years. On multiple occasions, these girls had gone to see the school nurse for symptoms such as anxiety and depression, fatigue, headaches, and back, neck, and shoulder pain, according to an Orebro statement. In the study, 59 of the girls were randomized to a group that regularly danced together two days a week and 53 girls to a control group where the girls did not change their living habits. The results indicated that the girls in the dance group, despite all the challenges entailed by being a teenage girl, increased their self-esteem compared with the control group. The positive effect persisted at follow-ups four and eight months after the dance training ended. Ninety one percent of the girls in the dance group felt that the dance study had been a positive experience. In the long run this may also lead to a more healthy lifestyle. IANS

T

here are many moments in fashion that get me excited. Most are revolved around meeting people who are deeply absorbed in creation and passionate about their craft. Speaking of craft and passion, Péro is a young brand that has made a name for itself because of their clear ideology and design directions. “At péro we believe in the organic evolution of design through experimenting

with traditional techniques and locally available skills.” reads the SpringSummer 2013 note. The clothes are an amalgamation of different skill sets mostly form India, taking design inspirations from what is seen on the streets and villages. This is about the day I spent with the founder and creative head of Péro — Aneeth Arora. A graduate of NID Ahmedabad and NIFT Mumbai. More than a fashion designer Aneeth is also an anthropologist in my opinion. Her knowledge of the local crafts and Indian cultural references make you want to live in her world and soak in the vast education. The first time I came to know more about the brand was when I was covering the British Council Awards where Aneeth was awarded 2011's Young Creative Fashion Entrepreneur. Her designs are creative and make a viable business model that gives steady income to local artisans and women who work from home in their villages. Here is a feature done in collaboration with photographer Zacharie Rabehi who has travelled in remote locations within India to shoot humankind. Though he has not shot “fashion” before, his portrait images of the Gujarati and Rajasthani people made it clear that

The writer is a fashion blogger (www.lovestruckcow.blogs pot.com) who attempts to bridge the gap between creator and consumer. As a fashion writer, she hopes to promote Indian fashion among Indians and on a global level too. the patterns, textures and organic fabrics of Péro by Aneeth Arora would be captured well by him. These photographs are shot by Zacharie at Aneeth's home and work place. The literal meaning of ‘Péro’ is ‘to wear’ in Marwari. The garments seen on the hanger or on the runway models entice you to wear them yourself. Her style is easy and tailored perfectly for the modern gypsy. Well ‘gypsy’ only because you like to collect things from the past and pick up different items from the places you visit. Because you want your clothes to reflect an idea which is more than something ‘shiny and tight’. Péro clothes are far from costumey or tribal. The techniques are handpicked and put together in a way that could be worn in Europe (and most are) or to a religious place in India. This is one name that will only grow bigger and make us prouder to be Indian.

KAKURO

How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

QUICK CROSSWORD

enced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so

on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Entertainment THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2012 CINE BYTES DiCaprio caught kissing cougar costar

T

he newly single Hollywood heartthrob was snapped smooching on his much older costar Joanna Lumley, on the New York set of their movie The Wolf of Wall Street and this was done when cameras weren't rolling?! The film revolves around a New York stockbroker who refuses to cooperate in a large securities-fraud case involving corruption on Wall Street.

P

aranormal Activity 5 will be released late next year, Paramount Pictures has confirmed. The fifth instalment in the horror series will debut in cinemas on October 15, 2013. Paranormal Activity follows a family which has been haunted by a demon for many years. The first movie was released in 2009.

MAY THE BEST WOMAN WIN

Will CHASTAIN steal the

Oscar?

R

emember last year when Jessica Chastain was everywhere? It wasn't by design. After being discovered by Al Pacino some years ago during an audition, the actress made her way into the business. She was cast by Pacino in Wilde Salome and landed roles in a slew of other films that all just happened to drop at once. So 2011 became her big coming out...to the tune of an Oscar nomination for her work in The Help and various precursor wins for her performances in that film, Take Shelter and The Tree of Life. Well, she arguably deserved to win the Oscar over her Help co-star Octavia Spencer last year, but we all figured we'd see her again. A talent like this doesn't just fade away. But who knew it would bubble up again so soon? While Sony has been busy keeping a lid on most of the details of Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, right down to the specificity of the role Chastain would play in the film, the Best Actress race has been slowly congealing into a big bid for Chastain's fellow young ingenue Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook.

ould Kristen Stewart be the next Bond babe? Nope. At least, not if the decision's up to Skyfall star Daniel Craig. The Breaking Dawn actress recently confessed that she would love play a Bond girl, and when Craig was asked what he thought of K.Stew's 007 dreams. "No," Craig answers with disgust. "She's in Twilight." Ouch. A little harsh, Bond!

ANTI-DOPING

Dettori handed out temporary ban PARIS: Frankie Dettori (left) was on Wednesday temporarily banned from riding in France "based on medical grounds" following his positive drugs test, French racing's ruling body announced. The suspension follows Tuesday's medical commission hearing at France Galop's headquarters in Paris into Dettori's positive test for an as yet unconfirmed banned substance when he was riding at Longchamp on September 16. Dettori's case is now

being reviewed by France Galop's disciplinary stewards who will decide what if any further action to take in early December. A France Galop statement confirmed: "Following yesterday's examination of the file and after having duly notified the jockey Lanfranco Dettori of its decision, the Medical Committee has temporarily suspended the said jockey from riding in races in France, based on medical grounds." The stewards' verdict on

what if any action to take against the legendary rider will be delivered "within the next fortnight... in accordance with the Rules of Racing," the statement reported. Dettori, who is probably racing's most recognisable face, had already been tested six times in England this year, but France Galop insisted that, contrary to some reports, he had not been targeted after they had received a tip-off. They said five jockeys were tested at the Prix de

l'Arc de Triomphe trials meeting on September 16, two urine tests and three breath tests. The 41-year-old Italian, whose lawyer has said that the substance involved was not "performance enhancing", could escape without any further punishment or, if the substance was at the top end of their prohibited list like cocaine, face a maximum six-month worldwide ban. He did not attend Tuesday's hearing, but gave evidence via a conference call. AFP

SAO PAULO: After helping his Red Bull team claim a stunning third consecutive constructors’ world championship in Texas last weekend, defending drivers’ champion Sebastian Vettel will seek, once again, to become the youngest triple champion in Formula One history in this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix. In his 101st race, the 25-yearold German has a clear goal — to finish in the top four and thereby make it impossible for his only rival Fernando Alonso of Ferrari to overhaul his 13 points deficit and take his own third title. On paper, for Vettel, it sounds simple enough after a sequence of results that recently saw him reel off four straight wins before finishing third in Abu Dhabi, after starting in the pit lane, and then second in Austin last Sunday. But he knows that Alonso, 31, and Ferrari will do all they possibly can, within the rules, to seize the Spaniard’s first title triumph since he joined the team. He will be aware, too, of the threat from both McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button in the season finale. Hamilton, in particular, has made it clear he wants to mark the 20th and final race of the year and of his career with McLaren on a high note as he races in their colours for the 110th time before transferring to Mercedes next year. “Brazil has been the scene of some epic races for me during my time at McLaren and, for many reasons, this weekend will be a very big race for me,” said

Vettel knows that Alonso, 31, and Ferrari will do all they possibly can to seize the Spaniard’s first title triumph with Ferrari. Hamilton, 27. “As my final race behind the wheel of a McLaren, I vow to the whole team that I’ll give it my all on every single lap.” The Briton will know he has the team behind him again, for the last time, as they want to end the season on a high with both drivers on the podium if possible. That will make life difficult for Vettel and Red Bull whose frailties were exposed last

Sunday when Mark Webber had to retire with alternator failure, the team’s third in races. In response, the team are planning to run with updated parts and to attack throughout the weekend. Even if the weekend turns into a battle for survival in the rain, as forecast, Red Bull have declared they will not be taking a cautious approach. Team chief Christian Horner said they know no other approach than racing to win. “We just have to approach the next race as we have the previous 19,” he said. “We have to go there, attack the weekend, and get the best out of ourselves; the car, the strategy, the drivers, and reliability. Anything can happen, as we have seen this season, but it is good to be going there with a lead, and we go there determined to close the job off.” Alonso and Ferrari, who demonstrated their pragmatism in Texas by deliberately sacrificing Brazilian Felipe Massa’s grid position for the benefit of Alonso, by breaking the seal on his gearbox, are equally focussed on raising their performance for what promises to be an exciting end to a long season. Team chief Stefano Domenicali said: “Pragmatically speaking, we know that the result has to be better. We have to be in front of Sebastian and we need some drivers in the middle, without thinking of the worstcase scenario. And this is the approach that we have to have. We know that it’s not easy because he’s driving very well and has a very quick car, but that doesn’t change what we have to do.”

Hami, Massa will remember their duel

SAO PAULO: Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa have more reason than most to revel in the unique atmosphere of Interlagos this weekend and stir up memories of their dramatic duel for glory in arguably the most thrilling championship climax of modern times. Like Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso on Sunday, both had a chance to win the 2008 title, Briton Hamilton in his

second season with McLaren and Massa for Ferrari in front of his own passionate Brazilian fans. At the finish, Massa crossed the line as victor amid emotional scenes with his team and family breaking into tears of joy. But they could

not be certain that he had taken the title because Hamilton, needing to finish fifth, was mounting a bold last-lap charge in the gloomy conditions. Rain was falling as he went into the last section of the final lap, nearly half

a minute after Massa had crossed the line, but more drama unfolded as Hamilton managed to catch and pass German Timo Glock, driving for Toyota, and take fifth place within a few hundred metres of the flag. His fifth-placed finish enabled him to win the title, beating the luckless Massa by a single point. AFP

SOUTH AFRICA IN AUSTRALIA

Warner, Clarke smash tons It was a rousing fightback by Australia after they lost three wickets in the morning session as South Africa suffered two injuries.

ADELAIDE: David Warner bludgeoned a quickfire century and Michael Clarke (right) also reached three figures on Thursday as Australia went after the South African bowlers in the second Test in Adelaide. Warner smashed 119 off just 112 balls, while skipper Clarke backed up his unbeaten doublecentury in Brisbane with another unconquered knock to leave Australia in command after winning the toss. At tea, Australia were 280 for four with Clarke unconquered on 104 and Mike Hussey not out 34. The home side added a blistering 178 runs off just 26 overs in the middle session. Warner was in belligerent mood after lunch, smashing spinners Imran Tahir and Faf du Plessis and racing to his third Test century off 93 balls, reaching his hundred with a six and a four off successive Tahir deliveries. The diminutive left-hander smashed a Tahir full toss over the deep midwicket ropes in the first over after lunch and two overs later heaved Du Plessis’s first ball in Test cricket over the square leg boundary for six.

But Warner perished on 119 when he attempted to glide Morne Morkel through the slips, only to edge to Graeme Smith at first slip to end a pulsating knock. Warner crashed four sixes and 16 boundaries and put on a 155-runs with Clarke in 24.2 overs.

It was Clarke’s fourth century of the year as he continued to dominate the South African bowlers after his unbeaten 259 in the drawn first Brisbane Test. He survived two referrals and at tea had faced 121 balls with 20 boundaries. Ed Cowan was caught and

bowled for 10 off Jacques Kallis’s third ball with an attempted yorker which struck him on the boot and spooned up off the bat for a dolly return catch. Rob Quiney, who kept his place when Shane Watson failed to recover from a calf injury, went for an eight-ball duck when Morne Morkel enticed him to edge to Graeme Smith at first slip. Ricky Ponting’s woes continued when he was bowled third ball for just four, playing inside Kallis. The former Test skipper was out for a five-ball duck in Brisbane for his third duck in four Test innings against the Proteas, and it was little better in Adelaide for Ponting, who stumbled and lost his footing. South Africa’s joy at their early successes was tempered by a hamstring injury that forced Kallis from the field after he had taken 2-19. Star paceman Vernon Philander was withdrawn from the team with a back problem before the start of play, making way for Rory Kleinveldt. AFP

2013-14 dates unveiled SYDNEY: England will play five Tests, five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals in their 2013-14 Ashes campaign in Australia, Cricket Australia said on Thursday. At least Manchester City spared themselves another defeat on their way out of the Champions League as they salvaged a point. TOM WILLIAMS Agencie France-Presse MANCHESTER, UK: Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho marked his 100th Champions League game with a 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Wednesday that sent his side into the last 16 at City’s expense. City had to win to stand any chance of going through, so although Sergio Aguero’s 73rdminute penalty cancelled out Karim Benzema’s early opener, the hosts went out in the group phase for a second successive season. Madrid had Alvaro Arbeloa sent off, but with eight points — three less than Group D leaders Borussia Dortmund — they cannot be caught by either Ajax or City, who had not lost in their 19 previous European home games. “This Champions League is worse than last season,” said City coach Roberto Mancini. “We have only three points after five games. We did some mistakes also, because this group was very difficult and we started the group with a (3-2)

defeat against Madrid in Madrid when we were 2-1 up with four minutes to go. “Everything was complicated after that result. Real Madrid and Borussia deserved to go through, because they played better than us.” The English champions trail Ajax by a point and therefore must win at Dortmund in their final group fixture and hope the Dutch side lose in Madrid if they are to secure the consolation prize of a Europa League berth. Mourinho, the youngest coach to reach the 100-match milestone, is now a step closer to delivering an elusive 10th European Cup to the Spanish champions, who have already fallen eight points off the pace in La Liga. “With the players at their (City’s) disposal, it’s amazing they’ve been eliminated in the group stage two years running,”

said Mourinho. “They put us under pressure, then there was the penalty and the sending off. City had all their attacking options, and we had just 10 men, but we held on, we resisted and we managed to control the game.” Mancini elected to deploy a three-man defence at the Etihad Stadium, but the home side’s defenders did not seem comfortable with the system and Madrid were quick to profit. In the 10th minute, Angel di Maria was given space to cross from the right and his centre found the unmarked Benzema, who cantered in behind Maicon to beat Joe Hart on the volley from close range. With Maicon and Pablo Zabaleta on the pitch, the right side of City’s defence should have been secure, but Cristiano Ronaldo found plenty of room there.

Fuchs strike propels Schalke into next round

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM: An acrobatic bicycle kick from France international Philippe Mexes helped AC Milan qualify for the Champions League last 16 with a 3-1 defeat of ten-man Anderlecht here on Wednesday. With Group C winners Malaga held 2-2 at Zenit St Petersburg earlier, both sides were desperate for all three points.

AMSTERDAM: Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the Champions League’s last 16 with some clinical finishing and impressive counter-attacking football on Wednesday as they hammered Ajax 4-1 in Amsterdam. Dortmund needed just a point to go through, but the German champions had victory wrapped up with three goals.

KIEV: “Crisis” club Paris SaintGermain clinched a place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday after beating Dynamo Kiev 2-0 in the Ukrainian capital. Ezequiel Lavezzi struck in both halves to give PSG a fourth win from five matches in Group A and consign Dynamo to a spot in the Europa League.

GELSENKIRCHEN, GERMANY: Schalke 04 booked

their place in the Champions League’s last 16 on Wednesday as a late strike from defender Christian Fuchs sealed their 1-0 home win over Olympiakos. Victory puts Schalke into the knock-out phase, but they will need to beat Montpellier away in a fortnight.

LONDON: Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere (below) fired the Gunners into the last 16 of the Champions League as his first goal for two years inspired a 2-0 win over Montpellier on Wednesday. The England international got back on the scoresheet with a cool finish early in the second half against the French champions and Lukas Podolski’s stunning volley soon after sealed a vital victory at the Emirates Stadium. With Schalke beating third placed Olympiakos in the night’s other Group B fixture, Wilshere and Podolski’s heroics put Arsenal into the knockout stages

of Europe’s elite club competition for the 13th successive season. Arsene Wenger’s side remain second in the group, one point behind Schalke, but crucially they have avoided the prospect of a qualification shoot-out with Olympiakos in their last group fixture in Athens on December 4. Wilshere ran to embrace Arsenal’s physio after scoring and he said: “My fitness will come. I’ve never been injured before so I can’t tell you how long it will take. “The first half was hard. We were sloppy, we gave ball away and weren’t ourselves.”
