Drunk city nabbed, 9,500 times Mohd SUBHAN

T
he campaign against drunken driving that had been launched by the City traffic police seems to be working after all. Several offenders are now wary of driving under the influence of alcohol and according to their wives are now spending more time at home. In fact, several of them have been thanking CV Anand, additional commissioner of police (Traffic) for his efforts to curb the practice.
In the last 10 months alone, the traffic police has registered 9,500 cases of drunken driving within the City limits. Some of these cases have involved prominent people like sons of ministers, CRPF personnel, army men, captains and also Tollywood actors like Nikhil, Navdeep and Shiva Balaji. Checkposts set up by the traffic police across the City on weekends are now a common feature. Nearly 22 special teams are pressed into action every weekend to keep a check on the incidence of drunken driving. On an average nearly 100 cases are booked on Friday nights while the number goes up to 200240 on a Saturday night.
IN THE LAST 10 MONTHS ALONE, THE TRAFFIC POLICE HAS REGISTERED
9,500 CASES OF
DRUNKEN DRIVING.
Typically, those arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol are produced in court and later sent for counselling. According to the police, many of those who are booked for drunken driving feel guilty and as a result the incidence of driving under the influence has reduced
significantly among the rich and the upper middle class. “There has been a spurt in cases of drunken driving in people who are not from the City. This could be because they are not aware about our campaign against driving under the influence of alcohol,” says Anand. He goes on to add, “So far we have not faced any legal hassles against our campaign. In fact,
other metros like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore have also appreciated our work.” The traffic police hopes to continue the good work and curb the incidence of drunken driving. “Up to 30ml of alcohol is acceptable for drunken driving. I am sure none of my men have taken a bribe in this campaign and that is why our efforts have been appreciated by the public,” said Anand. Recently, when Anand met some of the families of drunken driving offenders, he received appreciation from the housewives. He was reportedly told to keep up his good work and that he had their full support.

Low turnout threatens CoP

A
t a summit that will host delegates from across the world, security is a huge concern. However, according to officials, the security arrangements that have been made for the upcoming biodiversity summit will be one of the best. State of the art security arrangements coupled with safety measures of the highest order will be taken up for the CoP-11 to be held from October 1 to 19, say officials. According to Dr R Hampaiah, chairman of the AP Biodiversity Board, “The United Nations will be providing security cover at the venue for a radius of 2 kilometres. Assisted by fire personnel, the venue will be totally under their security blan-
ket. The City and national police along with other armed forces will not be allowed within 2 kilometres of the venue. This streamlined security protocol has been followed in all major biodiversity summits.” Around 1,337 cops from the City security wing will be undertaking vehicle checking, VIP movement monitoring, patrolling etc. However, the cause of worry is not the Ganesh immersion or the Telangana people’s march they say. “A major number of

delegates are yet to register with the CBD authority. So far, only 1,200 people including the media from all over the world have been registered with CBD authority.” This coupled with the last minute booking of hotel rooms will only add to the comic chaos of the world delegates in the City. The Daily Sustenance Allowance provided for the delegates will be another factor in deciding the stay of the delegates. “Previously, the DSA for del-
egates and participants was $200 a day. There is no estimate on how many hotels have been actually booked for the delegates. So the minute they land in the City, the City’s hotels will be crowded with delegates trying to cram in their reservations,” says R Hampaiah. He adds that the last minute rush will throw all security protocols to the wind. “This happens with any international conference. The governments postpone the job of deciding the delegates until the last minute. So just when the conference is about to begin in say two or three days, there is a mad rush of all these representatives at the immigration office. “Most of them come with no valid documents, the paper work is bound to be a cause of worry. And so, it has happened that they are allowed through, regardless of the stringent protocols that are in place.” The measures taken up for power supply too have been well thought off. A separate HT line has been directed towards the conference halls of HITEX, which will also in addition have a silent diesel generator set to provide continuous power supply. As to how much of this separate power connection will affect the rest of the areas of the City is yet to be decided. Principal chief secretary Minnie Matthew is expected to make a statement about the current status of the preparations for the CoP-11.
Incomplete works creates chaos The pressure of incomplete works seems to be taking a toll on the GHMC as a contractor, M Nagesh was allegedly attacked with a walkie-talkie by an executive engineer after several works were halted. Md Nizamuddin nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com
T
he incident involving a man being knocked down with a walkie-talkie’ has become the talk of the town even as the date for the CoP-11 closes in. The 11th hour frenzied activity in the GHMC, has taken its toll. Several works remains yet to be finished. Pressed by the superiors, one of the executive engineers lost his cool and allegedly manhandled a contractor, M Nagesh. He allegedly hit the contractor with a walkie-talkie. A day-after the much hyped inspection by the minister of MA&UD, who has warned the contractors of serious consequences, this incident took
place. The incident has prompted contractors in the City to halt the ongoing works, even as several works related to the event still remain pending. According to the official, who has been accused of manhandling, the contractors came with the intention of creating a scene. They hurled abuses and were blackmailing him. “They came to my office with the intention to fight”, said R Mohan Singh, executive engineer-Division 10, who is now at the police station. It is believed that the things became worse on Friday, even as the executive engineer tried to press into action the contractor. “The contractors were dillydallying the pending works”, adds the executive engineer.
However, the Contractors Association (GHMC) has stated that the executive engineer was not clearing the money which should have been received by the contractor for the works. “He has been delaying the clearing of our arrears. When we protested, he manhandled us,” says Munawer Hussain, the association’s president. Even though the executive engineer has been taken into police custody, the Association has halted all the works as protest. They have demanded immediate suspension of the executive engineer before they proceed with the work. “The course of action will be chalked out after we meet the mayor,”said the president.

hen 34-year-old Pune resident Archana Shedge was diagnosed with interstitial fibrosis, the future looked bleak for her. The mother of two was told by doctors that the only way out for her was to have a lung transplant, a rather rare surgery in India. Only two such surgeries had been performed in the country so far – the first in Chennai and the second in Mumbai. Being a high risk surgery, few hospitals in the country are equipped with the infrastructure and skill to perform this rather long procedure. The surgery can cost between `15 to `20 lakh. However, time was running out for Archana, who had been having trouble breathing for the

fter being in hibernation for a while, the T-students are all set to get back into action and turn Hyderabad into a battlefield to meet their demand for a separate Telangana. On September 27, Chalo Assembly will be held. On September 30 it is Chalo Tank Bund and finally on October 1 is Chalo Biodiversity. The OU students have planned a complete strategy for these three days. “We are a mob and mob mentality can do anything and I am sure history will repeat. If anything untoward takes place in Hyderabad, then only the Congress government is responsible. If
they are spending money on the City’s infrastructure then we will break them again. Around 10,000 students from all 10 districts of Telangana will be participating and we will make sure our voices are heard,” said Krishank Manne, OU JAC spokesperson. At present, a few ministers are in Delhi to talk about a settlement, but students are all set to continue with their plan. It is being anticipated that the September 30 march which is organised by the political JAC will be postponed as it may cause problems to CBD. However, students who are leading the agitation say that they will not compromise. “We have been getting call from top ministers to call off the rally but at no cost will we be doing this. Even if the ministers call off their march we will lead it. We are not answerable to any one and will not listen to them,” Basha, president, OU JAC. Not just these two days, students have also planned a special rally and agitation on October 1 which is the first day of CBD. “We will take the rally to the CBD centre. When our ministers don’t listen to us we will plead to the UN officials. As citizens of a third world country, we will go and plead with them. This time it’s a separate state or end of the government,” said Krishank. Meanwhile, City police commissioner Anurag Sharma said that as Ganesh immersion will be going on that day they do not want to take any risk. “We have not given them permission to hold a rally. So far they have not approached us for permission to take out a rally, but the police are taking precautionary measures,” he added.
Rohit Shedge, her husband. “Lung transplant was the only option for Archana. But considering it is such a high risk surgery we consulted experts at the DeBakey Heart and Lung Centre in Texas, to check if there was another way out, but there wasn’t. So we explained the risks to the patient and her family and put her on the waiting list for a possible organ donor,” says Dr Gokhale, chief cardiothoracic, transplant and minimal access surgeon at Yashoda Hospital. Interstitial fibrosis affects nearly six to eight per cent of
the Indian population, usually in the age group of 30 to 45. In this condition, a patient’s lung becomes stiff and oxygen supply to the lung is hindered. Fortunately, two months after Archana and her husband came to Hyderabad they got a donor. The family of a 55-yearold woman who had been declared brain dead at another City hospital, agreed to donate her organs and since the woman had O+ blood, she could be a universal donor. After harvesting her organ, doctors transplanted the right lung into Archana in a 14-hour long surgery. “Two days after the surgery Archana was able to walk in her room. But recovery will take nearly three to four months and she needs to be extremely cautious. She is highly susceptible to infections at the moment. On a positive note, for a woman who had just a few weeks to live, she now has an increased life expectancy,” says Dr Gokhale.

Is it not becoming clear that use of the name of Aam Aadmi, and misuse of power of chair, is to finish Aam Aadmi? Is it the game plan?
KOLKATA: Taking a jibe at PM Manmohan Singh, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Friday wondered whether the “power of (the) chair” was being misused to finish off the aam aadmi (common people). “I want to ask — what is the definition of aam aadmi? What is the definition of democracy,” Banerjee asked in a post on Facebook. “Is it not becoming clear
that use of the name of aam aadmi, and misuse of power of chair, is to finish aam aadmi? Is it the game plan!” she said. Banerjee’s comment came hours after the PM asserted that his government was voted in to protect the interests of the common man. In the address to the public, the PM defended economic reforms, saying they
were in the national interest and “hard decisions” will be pursued with people’s support, despite political opposition. Miffed by the Congressled UPA government’s decisions over hike in diesel price and foreign investment in multi-brand retail, the Trinamool earlier in the day withdrew support to the ruling coalition at the Centre.
and CPI-M on Friday said that PM Manmohan Singh had tried to justify “wrong” decisions of his government including the hike in diesel price in his address to the nation even as the Congress said he had clarified every issue. BJP spokesperson Prakash Javedakar said the PM had talked about the diesel being used by the rich but the commodity was used in transportation of goods and agriculture. “The government has burdened common man. The government could have earned `2 lakh crore by cancelling coal block allocation,” he said. CPI (M) leader Basudeb Acharia said the PM had given old arguments to justify hike in price of diesel and claimed the reasons given to justify FDI. IANS

Fishermen lay siege to port Protests against the Kundankulam plant continue as nearly 500 fishing boats block entry to the Tuticorin harbour. The protest has been on for nearly 400 days. TUTICORIN: Hundreds of fishermen laid siege to the port at Tuticorin on Saturday, demanding the closure of the Kudankulam nuclear plant. According to a TV channel, nearly five hundred fishing boats have blocked entry to the Tuticorin harbour, which is situated around 60 miles away from the nuclear power plant. The loading of nuclear fuel, which is on at one of the reactors at the
Kudankulam plant, has not in the least dented the determination of the protesters, all fishermen hailing from the districts of Tuticorin, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli — where the plant is located. “Fishermen in Kudankulam and surrounding districts are protesting over the last 400 days, but the government is not listening and we will have to resort to these kind of

EDITORIALS IF THIS IS NOT hypocrisy, what is? The time’s come to do some serious pondering on what is free speech and other aspects that it involves. As views are being bombarded about the right and wrong about the publishing of nude pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge, a few days ago, a French court issued an injunction that the pictures may not be published. Good, very good: those who issued the ruling were absolutely correct that a person’s privacy may not be infringed upon, celebrity or not. But, pray, why is no one up in arms about the sensitivities of many a Muslim being outraged these past few weeks in the name of freedom of expression and free speech? Why has no official or authority ruled that “expressions of thought” that offend people who believe in a certain religion may not be published, too? Apart from jeopardising the safety of thousands of French citizens in Muslim countries, the unthinking editor of the French magazine that gave the goahead to publish cartoons of Prophet Mohammed has not achieved much; and further worsened chances of containing the violence triggered by some idiot’s malicious masterpiece on celluloid. There’s a stark contradiction in the sympathies we show for different people and issues: it’s right that we be appalled at the violation of the privacy of some royal couple, but it’s wrong that the Muslims protest against the insult laid on their prophet when they should have made allowances for free speech and freedom of thought. If that’s how it’s to be, where are we headed? Are we to allow this hypocrisy and yet have hopes for a better world? We may as well abandon any such hope. We may prepare for something grim... and dark.

A
s a consumer, I’m a pain in the neck. I have very high expectations of products and services, and will not hesitate to make my dissatisfaction known if something made my unhappy or uncomfortable. And as if to roll out the red carpet for the constantly displeased consumer that I am, every service-oriented business today has a feedback mechanism in place. At restaurants, after a hearty meal, and after paying the bill, the waiter gives a feedback form tucked in a leatherbound receipt jacket. Most smart restaurant managers would have trained their staff to not return the change due or the credit card slip for signature until the feedback form is filled. I am very honest in giv-
ing feedback. In fact, I’m so honest that when I’m dining with family, they get embarrassed by my in-your-face comments and have often told me to tone them down. “Please change your music. How can Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ work in a finedining restaurant that serves rich North Indian food?”, “The orange paint on your walls hurt my eyes so much that I had to keep my sunglasses on the entire time”, “The tablecloth needs dry-cleaning… urgently”, and “I had to search for the paneer pieces in the paneer manchurian dish”, are some of my notorious comments. At a sports equipment store a few months ago, I bought shoes, socks, jogging wear, and lots of other stuff. The store’s card machine wasn’t working and I had to drive 3 km to find an ATM to withdraw cash (this store was in the city outskirts), drive back, pay up and pick up my goodies. But before I could leave, the staff behind the counter smiled and asked me to rate their service on a comput-
erized feedback machine. It had three smiley icons – a smiley for satisfied, a big smiley for very satisfied and a sad smiley for not satisfied. I wasn’t happy with my 6 km drive to withdraw cash for no fault of mine. So I chose not satisfied. The staff wasn’t satisfied this time and his plastic smile was wiped out instantly, replaced by a frown.
AFTER ALL, NO ONE EVER BECAME GREAT WITHOUT CRITICISM AND JUDGMENT. I gave my car for the regular maintenance service last month. Two days after I got the serviced car back, I received a perfunctory service call to check if everything was fine with the car. I had mentioned a strange noise from the steering wheel every time I turned it. They had promised to look into it and hadn’t. When I brought it up, they promised to get the
executive concerned to call me back. That call never came. A funny episode happened last week when an online hotel reservation site asked for feedback when they couldn’t manage to get me a booking at the hotel of my choice for my next vacation. They didn’t respond to my query when they were supposed to. So I called the hotel directly and made the booking. A week later, they emailed a feedback survey link. Were they really interested in knowing what I thought? My biggest problem with giving feedback is that I’ll never know how my comments are being used. Is someone doing something useful about it? Or is it just another process with no real meaning or purpose? Feedback is supposed to make us better, help us improve the quality of the processes we create. If something is going wrong, the odds are that you’re already on the path to doing it right. After all, no one ever became great without criticism and judgment.

hen Kingfisher Airlines was launched, the first thing that people thought of was the Kingfisher Calendar, because they naturally hoped that the airhostesses would be no less than the models that got showcased in swimwear on it. They weren’t totally disappointed because the airhostesses were incredibly pretty and elegant. To be fair, the total experience of flying the airline, from food to comfort to care, was outstanding. But it is not just the case of Kingfisher promising an attractive visual experience. In the hey days of Indian Airlines, when airhostesses were clad in saris, the ethnic Indian wear, they were still supposed to be tall, slim and beautiful. However, curves, bold attitude and western wear were not a part of the hosting game. Recently, I took two consecutive flights from Hyderabad to reach Chandigarh via Delhi on SpiceJet. While I am immune to anorexic women and tight short skirts that leave nothing to the imagination, it was obvious that the first-time-on-a-plane travellers were not. They gawked and gaped, and spluttered each

Just because the attendant is gorgeous, would you be willing to be parched unto death on a flight? However, I fail to understand a certain logic that I got the other day from a frequent flyer. He said, if the attendants have attitude, personality and good looks, they naturally give off the “touch me not or I shall bite” vibe, forcing men to behave with airhostesses and women to stop throwing themselves at the male flight attendants. So, if they didn’t have any of those attributes, flyers would misbehave? Whatever it is, especially in India, airlines should really revisit the dress code of female flight attendants. Who says uniforms have to be too tight, too provocative and too vulgar to make an airline successful? Airline companies in India can take a page out of KLM or Emirates, or even Thai Airways. They should also be sensitive to the other women passengers on the plane who have to watch male flyers ogle and letch at airhostesses who are actually quite awkward at times. Seriously, would a little more respect for women on board cost anyone their business? I don’t think so. www.arpitabhawal.wordpress.com
he riots and violent hatreds expressed by the Islamic fringe this week, however, and the prospect of more anti-US demonstrations disrupting our capital cities this weekend, underline the need for a reconfiguration of multiculturalism to foster the values of democracy, free speech and tolerance that should unite all Australians, regardless of their cultural or religious backgrounds. For too long, multiculturalism has emphasised the need to respect the differences between diverse cultures, with too little attention paid to integration and patriotism. Czech-born business leader and philanthropist Frank Lowy summed up the issue well on Wednesday when he told the Australian Multicultural Council in Canberra that newcomers to Australia were free to honour their heritage and religion, but also had an obligation to adhere to the values and standards of the society they had chosen to join. That included accepting Australia’s system of government and one rule of law for all, participating in civic life and ensuring that their chil-
dren, as Mr Lowy said, “receive a broad and balanced education untainted by the ideology of hate”. Contrary to Mr Lowy’s positive and responsible notion of multiculturalism in nation building, it is difficult to think of a more unAustralian scene than an eight-year-old child addressing a congress of Islamic fundamentalists in western Sydney, espousing her love for jihad and advocating a single world government for Muslims under strict sharia law. The Vietnamese-born ethnic affairs adviser to the NSW Coalition government, Dai Le, sounded a salient warning yesterday when she said that religious and ethnic tensions had the potential to “explode” Australia’s multicultural fabric. On the other hand, the leadership of a wide range of Muslim leaders in condemning last weekend’s riots was a positive and hopeful sign that, given time, the vast majority of Islamic Australians will be happy to integrate with the wider community. As in the US, where most newcomers are eager to profess their loyalty to the nation, its institutions and the flag ahead of cultural or religious adherences, Australia needs a more muscular patriotism and civic culture. To that end, the riots of the past week are a serious wake-up call.

Sotheby's gains new foothold in China market

Sotheby's is set to become the first international fine art auction house in China after signing a joint venture with a stateowned company. The deal with Beijing GeHua Art Company, which is subject to government approval, will give Sotheby's a foothold in China where foreign auction houses are prevented from operating by law. Sotheby's opted for the creation of a joint venture to overcome legal hurdles. "China and its growing class of collectors has been the single most attractive growth market, and collectors here have become a significant force in our salerooms," said Sotheby's Asia chief executive Kevin Ching.

hey say it is better to light a candle, than to curse darkness. While most people simply complaining about the existing conditions in our country, there are few who would go one step ahead and actually try to bring about a change. India, the second largest populated country in the world, faces difficulty in providing a proper ecosystem for students in research and development initiatives. If they want to pursue research as their career, most of them are forced to move abroad. Many academicians complain that neither universities nor the government have the funds to promote research. This is where Vishal Kandukuri, an alumnus of P Indra Reddy Memorial Engineering College, Chevella, decided to step in and bring about a change. He worked towards solving the problem that many students face in the country — inability to turn their innovative scientific ideas into reality. He launched V Adept Energy (VAE), a research organisation that helps innovators, graduates and young scientists in the areas of Physics, Engineering and Renewable energy by providing them with mentorship and possible fund assistance. Talking about idea, he says, “A country’s development is largely dependent on its ability to innovate things. The rate of innovation is purely dependent on the research capabilities provided. But very little has been done to encourage and utilise the young population for our nation’s growth. The idea is to use young minds to create scientific innovations.” “Funds are not a major problem for some students. Parents are ready to fund their projects. However, they don’t know how to take their work forward. I was unable to continue my academic

research due to lack of direction and mentorship. That is how I decided to set up this company when I was in my first year of engineering in 2008. At the time I neither had money nor the managerial skills,” he adds. Vishal had to partner with a business firm and work for a couple of years to start V Adept Energy. “To gain managerial skills and to have the necessary funds to turn my idea into reality, I partnered with Coherendz, a business development firm with expertise in developing webbased technology solutions for businesses. I worked as COO for four years, while continuing my engineering and all my earnings were directed towards VAE. In 2010, I moved on to a lesser influential role at Coherendz and launched VAE. Talking about the challenges he faced, he says, “It was difficult to divide my time between my academics and VAE. The company became a reality at the cost of my studies and health. I would sleep for around five hours and didn’t score my desired percentage in my engineering exam. Getting mentors for the company, who are prolific in different areas like physics, engineering and renewable energy on board is another big challenge. However, overtime we got some like-minded people.” In 2011, Sai Rakesh, a postgraduate diploma holder in industrial engineering from NITIE partnered with Vishal and joined the company. He is now guiding the company to achieve its objectives. “Rakesh has similar objectives and provides good insight. Together we
are trying to drive the organisation,” says Vishal. He goes on to add, “We are able to support 25 scientific ideas of students and individual innovators by mentoring. We believe this number will significantly increase in the future with awareness and by bringing more mentors on board. We are also trying to expose innovators and aspiring researchers to funding bodies like government, individuals, and companies.” Although, VAE is a non-profit organisation; it did not raise funds but sustained itself with self-funding from the founders. “We did not raise funds initially but worked together. Now we are in talks with MNCs to support research,” he says. The organisation is looking for funds to support research and also for mentors, who can devote their time to support the scientific ideas. “There is a high level of transparency; either a person can fund the scientific project or the organisation for its sustenance and everyday operations,” he says. Talking about his future plans, he says, “We want to have tie ups with global like-minded organisations and work collectively to bring about a change in the country and in the world.” They also want to organise knowledge seminars, expert talks and lectures through which the research knowledge can be seamlessly shared between aspiring researchers.

Students can put their idea across to VAE by visiting their website. Mentors of related research areas will go through the idea and check the potentiality and feasibility of idea. Young researchers can reach out to their mentors during mentors’ free time. VAE keeps track of the progress from mentors and researchers through out the process.

Dogs of war feel people’s power
Hundreds of demonstrators stormed the headquarters of the Raf Allah al-Sahati Brigade. BENGHAZI, LIBYA: Libyans angry over the enduring power of paramilitary groups in Benghazi stormed the bases of an Islamist militia and an exrebel unit sparking clashes that left at least four people dead, according to early Saturday figures. Overnight, hundreds of demonstrators including several armed men stormed the headquarters of the Raf Allah alSahati Brigade, located at a farm in the Hawari region 15 kilometres (10 miles) from the centre of Benghazi. At least four people were killed and 40 wounded in clashes pitting protesters and the Raf Allah al-Sahati, an Islamist group under the authority of the defence ministry, according to an AFP tally based on hospital records. The two sides exchanged rocket and light arms fire for two hours before the brigade decided to move out of its base, clearing the way for a horde of opportunistic looters. The assailants then set fire to one of the main buildings and pillaged weapons depots, walking away with electronic equipment, arms and ammunition, an AFP journalist at the scene said. Earlier, hundreds of protesters stormed the base of the hardline Islamist militia Ansar al-Sharia, forcing the

The assault came after an estimated 30,000 residents rallied earlier in the day against the influence of militias in the eastern city, which critics say have put themselves above the law. Libyan authorities warned against “chaos” and called on demonstrators to make a distinction between “illegitimate” brigades and those who are under state control.
WASHINGTON: Under-pressure White House hopeful Mitt Romney released his 2011 tax return and a 20-year summary of his payments on Friday, but failed to calm a clamour for more transparency over his finances. Friday’s fresh data showed that Romney, who faces President Barack Obama in November’s election, paid $1.9 million in taxes on an income of $13.6 million in 2011, an effective rate of 14.1 per cent. Romney’s rates are far below the top marginal rate of 35 per cent because the bulk of his income is in capital gains, which are taxed at a lower rate. “Mitt Romney has now released more than 1,200 pages of tax returns,” said Senator John McCain, who lost to Obama in the 2008 election. “It’s time to get back to discussing the issues that voters care about.”

f you're planning to buy a Blackberry again, realise that you're one of those people who're desperately holding onto the past. That said, RIM the Canadian-company behind BlackBerry is work-

As innovative as it might be, the price is simply ridiculous especially when a person can buy a Galaxy S III and Samsung Tab 2 for that price. What makes this move really bad is that a new model of Padfone that will run on a quad-core chip will be launched in the next few months. Oops!

To put things in context that’s the kind of resolutions most DSLRs don’t offer, so Nokia did do something revolutionary with the device. However, the device was running Symbian OS which would have been considered a smartphone OS ten years back. Symbian much like Blackberry OS feels like a hangover from the Christmas past. Also, if you

he Takraf Bagger 293 Bucket Wheel excavator is the biggest earth moving machine in the world. Built by German manufacturers KRUPP, this giant took five years to be designed and assembled at the venue of operation. n It is 310 feet tall and 722 feet long, weighs over 45,000 tonnes and moves with 8 crawlers in the front and 4 crawlers in the back. n It is currently being used to dig for lignite and currently digs 8.48 million cubic feet of earth a day ( which equals the load of 100,000 dump trucks) enough to fill 96 Olympic sized swimming pools. n It requires 16.56 megawatts of externally supplied electricity to function. n By February 2001, the excavator had completely exposed the coal source at the Tagebau Hambach mine and was no longer needed there. In three weeks it made a 22-kilometer (14 mi) trip to the Tagebau Garzweiler, traveling across Autobahn 61, the river Erft, a railroad line, and several roads. n The move cost nearly 15 million German marks and required a team of 70 workers. Rivers were crossed by placing large steel pipes for the water to flow through and providing a smooth surface over the pipes with rocks and gravel. Special grass was seeded to smooth its passage over valuable terrain. n Moving Bagger 288 in one piece was more economical than disassembling the excavator and moving it piece by piece.

The first book of the Crossfire trilogy, the story revolves around Gideon and Eva, two flawed, wounded people who are brought together by passion. Sound familiar?
Title: San Miguel Author: TC Boyle Publisher: Penguin It is a story of three women on a desolate island off the coast of California. The novel follows the lives of a woman in the 1880s, her daughter who wants to escape the stifling presence of her father, and a librarian who comes to the island in search of peace in the 1930s.
Title: India Grows at Night Author: Gurcharan Das Publisher: Allen Lane In his latest, thought-provoking book, Gurcharan Das writes about India’s private successes despite the failure of the government to support its growth. The picture however was different. They found that ‘Alaska gave up nothing easily. It was lean and wild and indifferent to a man’s struggle’ . The childless couple are

Far away from the maddening city crowd, the couple tries to pick the pieces. Jack gets down to battling the empty fields, the feeling of not being able to give Mabel a comfortable lifestyle and fearing how to face the harsh Alaskan winter, while Mabel tries to stave off the demons of the past, the pain of being childless and the growing distance between the two. Ivey drew inspiration for this snow-filled tale from Arthur Ransome’s Little Daughter of the Snow. nyone who’s read Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven knows that writer Mitch Albom is a god-fearing man, and in The Time Keeper, god is once again the great omnipotent puppet-master. The Time Keeper tells a story of the ‘man’, Dor, who created time, or at least, became the first person to keep count of its passing. In doing so, he caused the omniscient one concern. The god in Albom’s book is not a vengeful one; rather, he comes across as a wizened immortal with an ever-so-slightly sadistic streak. He watches as Dor pushes all else aside, including his wife
makes winters more tolerable. She comes with the first snow of winter and goes away with the coming of summer. The snow child, as they call her, fills the void that drove them to the wilderness in the first place. The couple experience much more than the joys of parenthood, the magic of the earth and the uncertainty of nature. Reading this winter tale, one is almost caught in a trance; you share the anxiety and the wait of the old couple and cheer when Faina (the snow child), comes back. Nobody believes she exists, their neighbours think the couple has caught cabin fever. Until, they all see her. Faina grows up among them , finds love, gets married but will marriage and a baby hold this wild sprite back? The wait to find this answer is unbearable. But Ivey slips up somewhere (whom he does love deeply) in his quest to measure the passing days and its individual chronological components.

down the line. It sometimes seems she is wasting time trying to get the book to end. The snow child’s coming and goings get boring after a while. Some questions arise like ‘How old are Mabel and Jack?’ and ‘How does Faina age in the first place?’ Ivey is from Alaska and her description of the wilderness, the way of living is all to the point. The natives live off the meat of wild animals and fish. The connection between man and beast, the appearances of the fox, the mention of bears and wolverines all make for a fable-like and appealing environment. The joy of the first snowfall, the pain of separation, the endless wait...all work their magic and you never know, Ivey’s debut novel might just find its way to your bookshelves as a keepsake. Victor Delamonte, and troubled teenager Sarah Lemon the true meaning of time, and hence, of life itself. Victor wants more time, Sarah wants less, cue existential conundrum. Albom’s writing is spare but crisp, and his narrative chugs along at a brisk pace. But what The Time Keeper lacks is grandiose; an overarching storyline befitting of the theme. This is Father Time he’s talking about; life, death and all between it — it deserves more: A Proustian treatment that is sorely missed in the 222 pages. The Time Keeper errs on the side of happiness and refuses to delve into the darkness for too long, and it is there that it falters. While it’s a decent read, it could have been so much more.

Too hot to handle If Fifty Shades of Grey got you all hot under the collar, you might want to take a long cold shower after reading these books. Looking beyond the Kamasutra, here is some of the best erotica you should read. Preferably when you're alone. THE STORY OF O BY PAULINE R EAGE
TROPIC OF BY H ENRY
FEAR OF FLYING BY E RICA J ONG
I
f you thought the BDSM scenes in Fifty Shades... were difficult to read, don't even venture near The Story of O. The original book on dominance, written in 1954, tells the story of O, a beautiful photographer who willingly submits to her lover, Rene, and an older man, Sir Stephen. The book, first published in French, shocked audiences at the time, even more so when it was revealed that the author was a woman. Though often called dark, disturbing and perverse — 'the ultimate objectification of women' — the book has also been hailed as an ode to love and female sexuality.
“T
his is not a book, in the ordinary sense of the word. No, this is a prolonged insult, a gob of spit in the face of Art, a kick in the pants to God, Man, Destiny, Time, Love, Beauty... what you will.” With such a declaration on the first page, it is obvious that Tropic of Cancer is no ordinary erotic fiction. In his semi-autobiographic novel, Miller uses hardhitting, crude, often ridiculous language to describe sexual exploits, while at the same time making some of the most poignant and delicate observations about people in the underbelly of the sex industry. Banned for nearly 30 years in the US, the book is now considered a masterpiece of 20th century literature.
B
est know for being the originator of the term 'zipless f***', Erica Jong's Fear of Flying played an important part in the development of secondwave feminism. The novel, which is about a married woman who decides to fulfil her sexual fantasies by having a string of affairs, resonated with women stuck in unhappy marriages. The book has been at turns lauded and condemned by feminists, but it has widely used to reinterpret female sexuality. The book caused an uproar when it was released in 1973, both for its noholds barred descriptions of sex and for strong language. Jong's unabashed celebration of a woman's sexual needs makes Fear of Flying a modern classic in erotic fiction.

ritten by Marquis de Sade while imprisoned in the Bastille in 1785, 120 Days of Sodom remains one of the most controversial books ever published. The novel tells the story of four libertines who isolate themselves in a castle deep in the woods for four months to fulfil their sexual fantasies. Four female brothel keepers are employed to tell them tales of their most interesting and depraved clients, following which the men act out the fantasies with a harem of 46 victims, both male and female. As the months progress, the depravity and cruelty of their acts worsen, ending in the massacre of most of the victims. 120 Days of Sodom lays bare the worst in man, and this makes it a very difficult book to read.
F
ew books in the erotica genre attempt to sound highbrow. Fewer succeed. Anais Nin’s Delta of Venus is one such novel. Written for a private client for his personal perusal, the stories contain literary flourishes rarely seen in erotic fiction. Though written poetically, Nin doesn't hold back in terms of content. The short stories deal with every possible sort of sexual behaviour, including incest, paedophilia, necrophilia, infidelity and homosexuality, more so remarkable considering the book was written in the 1940s. More sensual than titillating, the book earned Nin the title of 'queen of literary erotica'.

A pinch of madness
Two enterprising mothers from Bangalore found that for kids, learning had become monotonous and so they decided to bring the fun back into it. Thus was born Cheeky Monkey.

ll the classes our kids attended were very activity and theory-oriented. The fun and madness which one associates with kids activities was missing,” rued Neeti Kerpal Malhotra and Kiran Bedi Chawla. To fill that gap they founded Cheeky Monkey in Bangalore, offering cookery classes, recycle art, creative dance, photography, nature walks and other interesting activities and workshops for kids. Neeti, a post-graduate of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and mother of two little boys says she’s a child at heart and believes there’s no limit to having fun. In fact she suggests everyone should indulge in it some time. A graduate from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Los Angeles) and a post-graduate in Dance Movement Therapy, Kiran fondly remembers her childhood spent cooking with her mother who is a chef and a caterer. The enterprising young mothers decided to capitalise on their strengths: “Kiran is an amazing cook and dancer and I am totally into art and nature. Cheeky Monkey started simply because I wanted not only my boys but also other kids to enjoy their time while learning,” shares Neeti. And they’ve hit

upon the perfect recipe to do just that. It involves “a dash of curiosity, a pinch of madness, a dollop of love and a cupful of sweetness.” The duo started their eduventure with cookery classes targeted at 6-12 year-olds. The kids have quite a party baking cupcakes, pizzas, garlic bread, and making salads, fudge pops and even pink lemonade! Although the idea of kids

cooking doesn’t usually gel with our Indian psyche, Neeti is quick to reassure, “I agree that kids in the kitchen has potential hazards but before the commencement of the class we brief them about safety norms, the dos and don’ts. We also present them with a recipe booklet that has a listing of kitchen safety rules. And they’re not allowed to handle sharp knives or hot objects. Moreover a first aid box

is always at hand.” Class sizes are intentionally kept small to between 8-10 kids per session. “Kiran and I are both cheeky monkeys ourselves so we get along really well with kids. Interacting with them always leaves us pleasantly surprised. They have an amazing capacity to think out of the box and end up doing some really creative stuff. As for maintaining some sort of order, we group the naughty ones together so they keep themselves occupied!,” quips Neeti. Despite having launched just a few months ago, they claim the response has been overwhelming. “Parents are loving it, the kids are loving it and we are loving it! Parents have been pressing us to conduct more of such classes.” While there are umpteen kids’ activity classes available in Bangalore, Cheeky Monkey’s USP is simple: “We let kids be kids. Our goal is to see every child smile, laugh and have a great time. Our cheeky monkeys are encouraged to always use their imagination and creativity, be it cooking, dance, improvisation, photography etc. Learning comes hand in hand with having fun. If you’re having a great time the memories will last.”
urns out Lady Gaga isn’t pregnant; she just loves her food. Somewhere else, singer Adele is urging fans to ‘embrace their shape’. In another report, a tabloid is questioning whether Republican vice-president hopeful Paul Ryan lied about his body fat levels. Yes, I know we are an image-obsessed society. And yes, being overweight can cause a lot of health issues in the long run. But our preoccupation with weights and figures has gone way past a healthy obsession (pun not intended). The people in the news are there for a reason — and it isn’t their bodies. Who cares how handsome and fit a politician looks if he is incapable of doing the work he’s entrusted with? How does it matter if a musician eat five meals a day or a hundred, as long as she performs well? These days, it almost seems acceptable, even expected, that celebrities do drugs, commit crimes and generally live recklessly and irresponsibly. But heaven forbid they allow themselves to get fat and shapeless. Most targeted are the young female celebs. The second any of them puts on any weight, wild pregnancy rumours make the rounds. And if that seems harsh and antiquated, the ‘fat’ stories that circulate after the rumours have been quashed are even worse. Do I sound too cynical? Why don’t I mention all those stories of actresses opting for a fuller figure, of celebs embracing their curves, you ask. My question is, what does their figure have to do with anything? Would Aretha Franklin have been a better singer if she was reed thin? Are Katrina Kaif ’s acting abilities in any way improved by her perfect silhouette? We complain of image trumping talent in today’s world. Who else do we have to blame for that but ourselves? Killing the fatted calf has long been our favourite pastime. Isn’t it time we found a less cruel game?

I AM ALL EARS
I
am a 20-year-old boy and am planning to go abroad for studies. My parents have this fear of white girls and black men. They fear that I will become a junkie and become an African music loving rapster instead of studying. How do I tell my parents to come out of the well they are living in?
Youngsters are dreading getting friend requests from their parents. Do you accept their invites or decline them?
Dear worried kid, You should probably put your parents in a museum. They sound so ancient, am sorry to say. Clearly your parents know you better than yourself because their fears are that you will be upto no good. So why waste money on studying abroad? On a more serious note, get one of your teachers to sit down and talk to them, get neighbours, friends to explain that the world shown in the movies is not what they think it is.

agging you on family pictures that you are not very proud of, commenting on all the pictures and statuses posted by you, befriending your friends on Facebook, keeping a tab on your daily activities and calling you out for your personal mischief — parents are doing it all on Facebook. Parents are taking over Facebook like never before and they are pushing their kids away from the social networking site. Their children prefer to bail on Facebook rather than face the consequences. Getting friend requests from parents on Facebook is a nightmare that most youngsters face today. There are
some parents who act as the grammar police on Facebook and correct you everytime you spell something wrong on your status; others who find photographs that you upload of poor taste and are helpful enough to voice their thoughts and let the world know about the same. So should one reject one’s parents’ requests on Facebook or do you accept them and let them on limited profile? A young entrepreneur Nikhil Ramesh took the easy way out and decided to decline his mother’s friend request. He feels that parents being part of Facebook invades your virtual space. “My mother is friends with

She just has to meet them once before sending them a request. But, I have taken a stand and despite much coaxing, I haven’t accepted her friend request yet. It’s not because I am embarrassed about my parents. It is just that I feel that parents should not be part of your friends. It doesn’t feel right. I am the kind of person who opens up about my life, problems and relationships on Facebook and I cannot be myself with the constant worry at the back of my mind that my mother can see all that I am uploading,” he says. Once you accept your parents’ requests, a flurry of
requests from your relatives, neighbours and parents’ friends follow. Elisha John, 25, learned the hard way after accepting friend requests from her mother’s friends. “My parents are also on Facebook and they are not in the least interested in my life. But their friends definitely are. I made the biggest mistake of accepting these requests and they liked and commented on all the posts and photos that I was tagged in. In addition, they also began stalking me and talked ill about me to my parents. I had worn a dress to a party and they complained to my parents about the dress. Once I got to know about this, I unfriended all in that clan,” she says. Most of the time, parents are on Facebook to check on their children and keep tabs on them. IT professional Sunny Anand says, “It is scary when you have your father commenting on all the pictures that you put up. Since we tend to reveal all your personal life on social networking sites, parents end up knowing everything about you. They call up each time, they and want me to remove something from Facebook.”

Avunu is a taut thriller Ravi Babu deserves a pat on his back for crafting one of the finest suspense thrillers in Telugu in recent times, but the film truly belongs to Poorna. HEMANTH KUMAR
hemanth.k@postnoon.com
T
here’s a saying that fear is just a state of mind, but in Ravi Babu’s latest suspense thriller Avunu, this belief takes a new shape. Avunu explores the fear of being alone or autophobia, as it is called in medical terms, through the eyes of its protagonist Mohini (Poorna), a newly married woman who’s being haunted by a ghost. Lest you think Avunu is just another thriller which manipulates us with a story of a damsel in distress, Ravi Babu catches us completely off guard with a gripping screenplay. Harsha (Harshvardhan Rane) and Mohini (Poorna), a newly married couple, move to a new gated community which is far from the hustle bustle of the city. The duo plan to
go on a honeymoon to Paris, but Harsha is asked to go to Bangalore to solve a technical issue which has put his company in a fix. As Mohini tries to adjust to her new life, she senses that an invisible force is lurking in the house, watching her all the time and pretty soon, all hell breaks loose. Is living alone in the dark so terrifying? We can only delve into our own experiences to find an answer, but what Ravi Babu does get right is the portrayal of this
Movie: Avunu Cast: Poorna, Harshvardhan Rane, Ravi Babu Directed by: Ravi Babu Rating: fear. Poorna, who was last seen in Seema Tapakai, delivers a knock-out performance as the young woman whose worst fears come true. There’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide and her fear is accentuated even more in an explosive climax. Since
the camera remains static, the fact that Poorna and Harshvardhan Rane hook the audience for almost two hours with their performances is itself quite an achievement. Voyeurism is another ubiquitous element in the film. Cinematic liberties aside, there are moments where we end up wondering if it’s really necessary to see what Mohini does at home when she’s alone. Avunu scores high in terms of technical aspects and Ravi Babu’s strategy to leave almost everything to the actors in noteworthy. So what makes Avunu such an engrossing film? The answer lies in the eye for detail and a strictly no-gimmicks approach to showcase the protagonists’ desperation and fear. Two thumbs up for Avunu. It’s neither a great film nor does it have a novel story, but there have been very few films in this genre which have hit the bull’s eye in terms of packaging so much within two hours. That’s a rarity in Telugu cinema.
‘Charulatha was a challenging film’ P
riyamani is keeping her fingers crossed for Charulatha, which is by far the biggest film in her career. Directed by Pon Kumaran, the film is inspired from a Thai horror film Alone, although Priyamani insists that the script has been modified completely to suit the local sensibilities. “We have only bits and pieces from Alone. Pon Kumaran has made a good family entertainer and I am playing conjoined twins for the first time. They share a special bond and the story takes a different turn when one of the twins falls in love with a guy,” Priyamani reveals. So how did she manage to play the roles? “I must thank my body double Deepika for being quite helpful throughout the film. Charulatha was quite a challenging film for me because I had to play both the roles and shoot every shot twice, since it’s a bilingual film. The film unit would patiently wait for me to change into the other character. Everyone was so helpful,” Priyamani says. She had earlier worked with Pon Kumaran in the latter’s debut film Vishnuvardhana and she agrees that it was a delight to work with him again. “He’s open to suggestions and gives everyone so much freedom to experiment. I really wish the film clicks at box office and for the first time in my career, a film is releasing in all the four South Indian states,” she says. Will she sign any Telugu film in near future? “I am waiting for the right offers. As of now, I am eagerly looking forward to see how people react to Charulatha,” she says.

TEBOW looking for? W
hat is Tim Tebow, one of NFL’s most eligible bachelors, looking for in a girlfriend? Someone who’s kind and humble and, yes, beautiful — but on the inside as well as the outside. “Obviously looks play a big part. Being attracted to someone plays a big part, but there’s also so much more than that for me,” the New York Jets quarterback, 25, told Vogue in its October issue. “It’s about finding someone sweet and kind — and that has a servant’s heart.” That latter phrase comes from the Bible — Tebow is a devout Christian — and refers to maintaining humility regardless of one’s personal wealth or celebrity. It’s clearly an issue for Tebow, who has both. And he doesn’t want someone who’s dazzled only by his fame or riches. “It’s about finding a girl who likes me for me, and not because of what I do, or who I am, or the name,” he says.

SUDOKU
KAKURO
How to play kakuro
SCRIBBLING PAD
Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Yadav's five-for gives Rest edge BANGALORE: Robin Bist's unbeaten century failed to prevent Rest of India from grabbing the initiative as Umesh Yadav's five-for saw Rajasthan getting bundled out for 253 on Day 1 of the Irani Trophy match here today. The 24-year-old Bist remained not out on 117 off 187 balls, and the knock was studded with fourteen fours and two sixes. Bist's century came off 157 balls even as the likes of Vineet Saxena, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Ankit Lamba and Rashmi Parida perished quickly. Bist found an ally in Rashmi Ranjan Parida until the latter was bowled by Ishant Sharma for 34 after a fourth wicket-stand of 105. The stand took the Ranji Champions to 151 after they were tottering at 46 for three at one stage. Bist then teamed up with Dishant Yagnik and his useful 40 off 68 balls took Rajasthan past the 200 mark. Walking in to bat with Rajasthan strug-

At tea, Rajasthan were 184 for four with Bist on 84 and Dishant Yagnik on 16 not out, but Yadav had different plans up his sleeves in
the post-tea session. In a fiery spell, the India pacer brought Rest of India back into the game, dealing five quick blows to Rajasthan. First, he trapped a well-set Yagnik leg before, breaking a 67-run partnership with Bist for the fifth PTI wicket.

COLOMBO: Luke Wright smashed an unbeaten 99 off 55 balls as defending champions England knocked Afghanistan out of the World Twenty20 with a 116-run victory in Colombo on Friday. England, sent in to bat, piled up 196-5 after a bad start before Afghanistan were dismissed for 80, having narrowly avoided being shot out for the lowest total ever in T20 internationals. The minnows were reduced to 26-8, and in danger of falling below Kenya’s 67 against Ireland in 2008, when Gulbodin Naib and Shapoor Zadran provided unexpected resistence by adding 44 for the ninth wicket. Naib, who came to bat at number eight, scored more than half of his team’s runs before he was last man out for 44 off 32 balls that included five fours and three sixes. But none of the other batsmen reached double figures as Jade Dernbach, skipper Stuart

Broad, Samit Patel and Graeme Swann picked up two wickets each. Afghanistan’s second successive defeat in the tournament -they had lost to India by 23 runs on Wednesday -- meant both England and India qualified for the Super Eights round from group A. Wright hit eight fours and six sixes in the highest score by an Englishman in World T20 after Craig Kieswetter was bowled by Shapoor in the first over before a run had been scored. Wright, who was on 97 with one ball remaining, was denied a century when he managed just two runs off Dawlat Zadran. But he helped England plunder 87 runs in the last five overs. England struggled to 15 runs in the first four overs, before the innings gained momentum when 23 runs were scored off the fifth over bowled by Shapoor. Alex Hales helped Wright put on 69 for the second wicket before he was run out for 31 in the 10th over.

McCullum humbles Bangladesh PALLEKELE, SRI LANKA: Brendon McCullum notched the highest individual score in all Twenty20 internationals to help New Zealand humble Bangladesh by 59 runs at Pallekele stadium on Friday. The 30-year-old right hander smashed seven sixes and 11 boundaries during his 58-ball 123 to give New Zealand, who reached 191-3 in their 20 allotted overs, a rampaging start to the group D match played under overcast conditions. McCullum’s clean hitting made it gloomy for Bangladesh who were restricted to 132-8 in their 20 overs, with Tim Southee (3-16) and Kyle Mills (3-33) sharing the spoils. Nasir Hossain played a lone fighting hand with an impressive 39-ball 50, studded with six boundaries and a six while open-

New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor praised McCullum’s robust innings. “When you have someone score a century in T20 you’re always in the box seat,” said Taylor. “The wicket nipped around early on and seemed to zip on a little bit under the lights. Hopefully this win will give us momentum.” Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said McCullum had made all the difference. “We bowled well in the first few overs but McCullum, even when he doesn’t hit the ball well, it’s still going for six. We’ll look at our strengths and come up with a new strategy for the next game,” said Rahim. It was all McCullum when New Zealand batted after being

Gayle reveals big hitting secret
“It takes a bit of strength and once the ball is in your slot you go for it,” Gayle said on his 33rd birthday, ahead of West Indies’ match against Australia on Saturday. COLOMBO: Hard-hitting West Indies opener Chris Gayle celebrated his 33rd birthday on Friday by telling batsmen how to hit sixes during the ongoing World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. “It takes a bit of strength and once the ball is in your slot you go for it,” Gayle said ahead of the West Indies’ first match against Australia in Colombo today. “It’s instinct to be honest. You have to let the mind and body flow together. You don’t want to get stuck in a twominded situation. You just try and be natural out there and things will actually flow for you in the end,” Gayle was quoted as saying by the West Indies Cricket Board in a statement. Left-handed Gayle, whose 27 sixes are a tournament record in the World T20, is one of the most feared batsmen in all formats of the game with a pen-

HAMBANTOTA: South Africa skipper AB de Villiers said his batsmen will put Sri Lanka’s magician spinner Ajantha Mendis (right) under pressure when the two teams meet in a group C match in Hambantota today. Mendis, 27, sounded a warning to all batsmen by picking up 6-8 — the best figures in all T20 cricket — to crush Zimbabwe in the opening match of the World T20 on Tuesday and promises further destruction. But de Villiers said his team will be ready for the mystery spinner. “Mendis is a world class bowler,” said the South African captain. “When he’s going well he will always pick up wickets. But we’ve seen him perform under pressure and seen him break down under pressure as well. So, hopefully, we can get the upper hand against him and not let him bowl to us.” South Africa also thumped
Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in their opening match on Thursday to qualify for the Super Eights round with Sri Lanka but de Villiers promised no let-ups. “I don’t think there will be any drop in intensity. We’re in the beginning stages of a very, very big event, a tournament
that we really want to win,” said de Villiers of South Africa, who are among the title favourites in the 12-team event. The South African captain admitted his team were underdogs against the fancied hosts. “We know we’re not a perfect team. Sri Lanka are the home team and we’re probably underdogs. We’ll try and gain more momentum out of the game,” said de Villiers, whose country has not won a major event since winning the 1998 ICC knock out event in Bangladesh. Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene played down the hype around Mendis, who is often compared with world record holder countryman Muttiah Muralitharan. “They’re big boots to fill. It’s going to be tough for anyone to fit into Murali’s shoes because of the quality of the player,” said Jayawardene of Murali, whose 800 Tests and 534 one-day wickets are the highest in the world.
able to hit a lot of sixes,” said Gayle, who also has two triplecenturies in Test cricket to his credit. “I pay special emphasis to my balance. You have to realise that bowlers are not always going to make it easy for you. You have to create the shots, so you have to make sure you do it well.” Gayle said he looked forward to playing against Australia, who thrashed Ireland by seven wickets on Wednesday. “The first game is vital,” he said. “You don’t want to play catch-up cricket in T20, so it’s a very big match for us. It will also get our confidence going. In our team we bat right down, and bowling-wise we have spinners and fast bowlers. The key for us is to get to the second round and try and take it step by step.” The West Indies play AFP Ireland on Monday.
Kevin hopes to join team Down Under COLOMBO: Axed England batsman Kevin Pietersen hopes to be playing again for England by the time the tour of New Zealand starts in February next year, he said on Friday. In a Twitter conversation with New Zealand rugby union star Dan Carter, Pietersen wrote: “Hoping alls sorted & I’m on the NZ tour in Feb. If so I’ll bring you a gun of a bat!” Pietersen was cast into international exile after sending texts to South Africa players that contained criticism of then England skipper Andrew Strauss during the recent Test series. With reports circulating that Pietersen had also fallen out with several of his team-mates, he was also axed for the ongoing World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka and next month’s tour of India. England are due to play three Tests, three ODIs and two T20s in New Zealand next February and March. England’s new Test captain Alastair Cook said on Thursday that Pietersen remained in talks with England cricket board officials as the controversial batsman fought to save his international career. Taylor brands Zimbabwe ‘sloppy’ Shahid Hashmi
Agence France-Presse
HAMBANTOTA, SRI LANKA: Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor has described his team as “sloppy” and “below par” after they crashed out of the World T20 with a ten-wicket thumping by South Africa on Thursday. Zimbabwe were no match for the South Africans as they were reduced to a paltry 93-8 in their 20 overs before seeing their opponents overhaul the low target without losing any wicket with 7.2 overs to spare. Zimbabwe lost the first game against Sri Lanka. “We came here to win games, and to end on the note we have is very disappointing,” said Taylor after the match. “The sun comes up tomorrow, and unfortunately we head home. There’s a long way to go for us and there’s a lot of cricket to be played next year. We just want to keep trying to
improve and improve in different conditions.” Taylor regretted his team was below par in a major event. “We went wrong in all departments. We dropped chances and were sloppy in the field, leaked runs with the ball and didn’t score many runs with the bat,” said Taylor whose batting was rocked by Jacques Kallis’s 4-15.

Fergie calls for calm Three Liverpool vs Man Utd flashpoints Steve Griffiths
LONDON: Liverpool host Manchester United on Sunday in the 186th instalment of a bitter rivalry that has brought out the worst in some of the sport’s biggest stars. Here we look at three of the most notorious flashpoints in England’s premier grudge match:
Teargas stuns United
Alec Kennedy
LIVERPOOL: Sir Alex Ferguson (above) has called for calm ahead of Manchester United’s emotionally-charged clash against bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday. United manager Ferguson is well aware that the eyes of the football world will be on Anfield this weekend for the 186th instalment of the English game’s most volatile grudge match. The fixture marks Liverpool’s first home match since the publication of an explosive report into the
Hillsborough disaster which saw 96 Reds fans killed due to crushing at an FA Cup semifinal in 1989. Hillsborough remains a hugely sensitive issue for Liverpool fans and feelings are still running high after the report proved that the authorities engaged in a cover-up in a bid to blame the tragedy on drunken supporters. But United fans, who have often taunted their rivals about Hillsborough in the past, engaged in anti-Liverpool chants during last weekend’s win over Wigan, raising fears they could do the same at Anfield.
In the 1980s English football was being torn apart by the hooligan gangs that regularly ran riot on the terraces and United’s visit to Anfield in February 1986 provoked an especially sinister incident. As United manager Ron Atkinson and his players climbed off their team coach outside Liverpool’s stadium and headed towards the dressing rooms they were stunned by a fan wielding a can of teargas.
Child’s play turns nasty Over two years into his reign at United, Alex Ferguson was struggling to knock Liverpool from their perch on top of English football.
Ferguson, incensed by the dismissal of United's Colin Gibson, hinted that referees were biased towards Liverpool when he told radio reporters that it was no surprise managers "have to leave here choking on their own vomit, biting their tongue, afraid to tell the truth".
