he beauty of baked earth and the aesthetic appeal of terracotta can enhance any house or outdoor décor. Terracotta products occupy a prominent place in most homes because of their contemporary yet rustic appeal. For inexpensive and beautifully crafted terracotta products, head to Balamarai Check Post in Secunderabad. In an open space just off the road, the artisans display their works. Bird baths, rural musician sculptures, horses, elephants, bullock carts, Ganesha’s, wind chimes, flower vases and lanterns are some of the varieties for sale. Most of the artisans are from
Rajasthan and some from other parts of the State. To them Hyderabad is like a second home. But many of them are struggling to make ends meet. Most of them reside in temporary huts. They have no ration cards or voting rights. Their children do not attend school and their settlements are not legal. “Making these terracotta products is our livelihood. We have been living here for eight years but we barely received any help from the State government or NGOs” says Laxmikanth. While the artisans incur losses many a times, the growing demand for eco-friendly products has brought a smile on their faces. “These days many people believe in eco friendly interiors and clay products do not create any environmental pollution. We hope that more people will switch to environment friendly products and

Unlike pottery, terracotta art demands creative talent. The clay is first ‘weathered’ and then mixed with sand and water before being passed through a pug mill to acquire a smooth consistency. A lump of clay is then placed at the centre of the potter's wheel and moulded into the desired shape. For pieces with intricate designs, Plaster of Paris moulds are used. The clay model is then dried at room temperature, designs carved on it and buffed over a glaze before it gets a final coating of red clay. It is then loaded into the kiln and baked at a high temperature.

Hailing from a poor family, he was a humble milk vendor, but he found that such lowly but honest living brought neither money nor glory. And, after his marriage with Hafeeza and the first child was born, he realised the futility of pedaling milk. He watched with consternation how the street dada made an easy living and enjoyed. Why not? He thought. At the age of 20 he committed his first crime. He allegedly robbed a person of `5,000 after attacking him at Hussainialam. Ayub then learnt another lesson. He needed a godfather or needed to cobble up his own gang to survive. First, he became an associate of Minhaj gang but after Minhaj was murdered by rivals,

A while ago, another rowdy-sheeter Muddu Srinu was murdered in prison. Last year Ayub’s co-brother was reportedly killed by the Choor Qaiser gang. Now he is said to be mortally afraid of the Najaf, Omer Quadri, and Choor Qaiser gangs which reportedly have a score to settle with Ayub. A few months ago, Ayub wrote a letter to his brother Mohd Ghouseuddin Qaiser from prison in which he pointed out his fear. Meanwhile, his brother has moved the high court to get his conviction quashed. But Ayub is having second thoughts about it, his brother said. Ayub has three kids—two sons and one daughter. All are in school. It is said that mainstream political parties and one local party had used his ‘services’ in taming their challengers. But after the killing of Srinu, he is not even sure of being safe in jail and is said to be spending days thinking how to begin his new life once he gets out of jail.

They are expected to reach New Delhi on April 7, 2012 which will then be declared are the Zero Corruption Day by these proud citizens. Every Sunday I travel for two hours from Warangal and come to the Medchal highway to sell my products. For the rest of the week I work in the fields,” says Mahendra D, a vendor. Six months back though the highway saw no such colour or trade. But these days it has become a mini market of sorts with citizens making a beeline to the area to buy fresh produce. For farmers, this is a blessing in disguise. Earlier they had to struggle to find space in the local market to sell their wares, but now they have an exclusive space for themselves on the highway. “We have been coming for six months

and since it’s damaged, I need `10,000 to repair it. Hence on weekends I bring my sweet corn here to sell. It’s the best place as I sell more than 200 corns each day,” he said. A few farmers from Telengana have faced losses this year due to lack of rains. But through this venture they can now earn some money. “I have agricultural land in Chintal but as there are no rains I am running in losses. Once when I was travelling by the highway I saw farmers selling red chillies. So now on weekends I buy chillies from Uppal and sell them here. It’s quick money,” Mohan K, a farmer. But not everything is hunky dory for these farmers, who are reportedly forced to pay a commission to the local cops. “We began selling our products here only since the last four months. Moreover we only come here in the winter season but it looks like both the government and the police have a problem with this. First we aren’t allowed to retail in the regular market and now the police come and demand a commission to let us sell our wares here. We have to pay extra to just travel from Warangal but nobody seems to care about that,” laments Srinivas R, pandu mirchi vendor. For years now politicians have been using the Rythu bazaar model to fill their vote banks. But with rythus (framers) on highways, we wonder who is selling in the rythu bazaars then.

Irate Cong men lash out at Azad POLITICS A Saye Sekhar saye@postnoon.com
T
he AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad’s visit to the City for the second round of coordination committee was muddled in controversies, as several Congress leaders threw tantrums over his visit itself. Wittingly or unwittingly, the Congress leadership raised curtains to a caste-based debate within the rank and file of the party. Even as Azad was gearing up to meet the members of the coordination committee on the very first day on Saturday, Guntur MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao became the first to drop a bombshell, expressing anguish over the shabby treatment being meted out to ‘Kammas’, the ruling community in the Telugu Desam Party. “We have been fortifying the party for several decades. Ever since the TDP came into being, our support became even more crucial. But we feel dejected and let down as the party is not offering any positions to us in recogni-
tion of our services. We are a poorly relegated community,” he told reporters in the Secretariat. He drew the attention of the AICC general secretary not because he expressed his anguish, but because he obliquely referred to the growing strength of YSR’s son Jagan. He endorsed the observations of senior Congress MLA Gade Venkata Reddy (Bapatla in Guntur district) that Jagan possessed leadership qualities. His magic worked and the matter was discussed in the coordination committee. That whether any more Kammas would be accommodated in any positions of power is a different story. As if to counter the Rayapati tomfooleries, Azad wangled an invite for breakfast at the residence of Renuka Chowdary, the party’s stormy petrel of yesteryear. The presence of deputy CM Damodar C Raja Narsimha, minister Danam Nagender and TNGO leaders provided a dash of anti-Kiran Kumar Reddy colour to the breakfast diplomacy. Renuka used this as an opportunity to tell the media that the Congress was not ignoring Kammas and that she had “crossed the stage of asking for
positions.” She also told Azad in confidence that the party should not ignore Kammas if it wanted to stop the TDP’s comeback trail in its tracks. Meanwhile, the Congress cadres are sulking over the induction of two Kapus from Chiranjeevi quota into the Cabinet. Most leaders did not mince words in asserting this. Chengalrayudu, a Congress MLC, said Reddy community, which

T
he mayor’s recent announcement that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) can obtain `720-crore revenue only from property tax during the next financial year seems to be lofty. Going by the available statistics, the GHMC, which set a target of about `650 crore, could collect only `385 crore so far and it still needs to collect `125 crore by the end of the on-going financial year (2011-12). Officials of the financial wing say that they will cross the last year's target of `524 crore during current fiscal with the help of actions like proper assessment of un-assessed and under-assessed properties. But the officials say that it will be difficult for them to achieve the new target of `720 crore in the next fiscal as they will exhaust all the available methods to increase the income. "The new target seems to be difficult to achieve as there are no resources available to increase the income other than to hike the property tax," an official of the finance wing told Postnoon. He said that the process of proper
evaluation of un-assessed and underassessed properties is already underway and the corporation has already identified major under-assessed properties and collected a whopping sum of `83 crore from them. This amount includes property tax from owners with `5 lakh and above tax liability. It may be recalled that the GHMC had launched suo moto surveys to identify under-assessed properties and rectify defects in tax liability status. A survey launched by the corporation has helped the officials identify under-assessed properties but it has also reduced its revenue estimates. During the on-going survey, which was undertaken to find out property owners of less than `5 lakh tax liability, the corporation surveyed about 1,000 properties and collected `18 crore from 300 properties. In the process, it also lost `6 crore of income compared to last year as it rectified existing defects in assesment of some properties.
was carrying the party on its shoulders, might go adrift and join hands with Jagan, as the Congress leadership is singing paeans to Chiranjeevi. The proximity of APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana to Chiranjeevi, as both belong to Kapu community, too became a hot topic of debate. Amalapuram MP GV Harsha Kumar went a step ahead and criticised the ‘private parties’ and ‘pri-
vate meetings’ of Azad. One such meeting at Taj Krishna was supposed to be part of Azad’s effort to find a groom for his daughter. The MP, who spewed venom at the non-inclusion of Malas and scheduled tribes in the coordination committee, launched fireworks at Azad. Meanwhile, the allocation of the portfolio of ports to shipping business tycoon Ganta Srinivasa Rao also came under severe criticism.

H
ealth Minister DL Ravindra Reddy has expressed his displeasure at the attitude of government doctors. He said that the government doctors, who were working in private hospitals, should resign. He said that people were losing faith in government hospitals because of them.
unning behind the bus that seemed to play with waiting passengers, struggling to find out where the bus goes from a conductor who only sneers at passengers, fighting for a foothold once in, are common sights at the City bus stops. Passenger-friendly is a slogan only for stickers and advertisements. Most drivers and conductors of the APSRTC have never heard of it. No wonder, daily commuters prefer overcrowded autorickshaws to a bus. In the bargain, the buses are losing precious revenue. “Although I avoid boarding a bus that has too many people in it, due to time constraint, I am forced to ride it often,” said 23-year-old Prakash Talmundi who commutes between Punjagutta and Charminar everyday. “Moreover, it gets stuffy when the bus is full. With the onset of summer, it is only going to get worse as the heat is unbearable in an overcrowded bus. Adding to these woes is the fact that you only have about a minute or less to find space,” added Prakash, “This makes it even more dangerous.” Mornings are the worst times as a large number of people board buses to reach their work or study places, said K Ratna, a maid who uses the public transport from Khairatabad to Alwal. “People push each other to make space. Women get the worst treatment as some lewd men press against women deliberately. This is,
especially difficult on people holding on to the horizontal support rod,” she said. But nothing is as dangerous as students who run after the buses with a heavy weight on their backs, another passenger pointed out. “Not only are they made to run after the buses, they are also not taken seriously by the conductor and passengers. When a school-going child requests for more space, she or he is snubbed,” said Ronil Mehra, 46, from his observations as a regular APSRTC commuter. One is forced to wonder why this problem arises almost every day. There aren’t enough buses that run on routes where this scenario is an everyday affair, say the passengers unanimously. “Sometimes we have to wait for a long time for the next bus to arrive. Everybody compromises on safety to reach their destination in time,” highlighted Ratna.

But it is hard not to miss the mischievous glint in Babul Das’s eyes. After all he’s just 20-years- old and no one can blame him for being an ardent FM listener throughout the day or his constant chatter with the drivers. Hailing from Assam he came to Hyderabad a year back in search of work. He got a job as a security guard and says

His shift begins at 8 am and ends at 8 pm. Ask him if his work ever gets monotonous and he says he’s happy to have a job and he doesn’t have the luxury to complain. Wise words coming from a person so young.
How to avoid over crowded buses n Arrive early to catch your bus; reaching your destination an hour early is better than reaching on time in an overcrowded bus. n Take the next bus; it may be less crowded; take an alternate bus even if it stops a little away from your destination. n Sometimes, a shared autorickshaw is safer and faster too. n Make space for fellow passengers; be polite if someone asks you to move in. n Write a complaint to the APSRTC in case the situation is bad; you never know, your request might actually make the government officials take notice!

APSRTC authorities’ helplessness “Thirty five lakh commuters use our buses every day. But one only sees this during peak timings. During slack hours, you will comfortably find space. The same buses have to be rotated and due to limited resources, we are helpless. However, we are increasing our depots from 24 to 30 this year. Last year, we introduced 1,000 new JNNURM buses in the State and this year we will introduce another 300 CNG buses. It is a continuous process as we add more buses to increase frequency,” said B Prasad Rao, vice-chairman and managing director. Incidentally, APSRTC holds the Guinness world record for having the largest fleet of 22,410 buses (as on November 30, 2011) in the world, 3,800 of which ply in Hyderabad alone. Something to think about, perhaps?

hairman of Joint Action Committee of Telangana Employees, Teachers and Workers, Swami Goud on Sunday made it clear that the Telangana employees’ unions were ready to go on an indefinite strike, if a Telangana Bill was not introduced in the Parliament. The T-Employees JAC leaders, led by Swami Goud, met Ghulam Nabi Azad and apprised him of their resolve. Swami Goud said that the Union Minister assured them that he would take the matter to AICC president Sonia Gandhi. “We told Ghulam Nabi Azad that Telangana Bill should be tabled in the Parliament during the ensuing budget session. We also made it clear that Telangana employees unions were ready to go on strike once again if the Centre sat on the Telangana issue”, he added.

In a graphic instant, the story of the Titanic’s Captain, Edward Smith, visualises in our thoughts, but sadly and most unfortunately, in contrast to what Smith did, Captain ‘Coward’ Francesco Schettino fled at the first sight of disaster as many passengers were struggling to reach to safety. However, commodore V Kumar, a retired submariner, disagrees and says that it is a common misconception that a captain is expected to go down with the ship. “The Sai Teja Linga captain has never been expected to be the last to leave. That’s a romantic notion,” he says. “Only captains in warships go down with the ship. But for the world’s navies, it still holds true, though in the interests of loss of highly trained and experienced personnel, it is not quite followed.” It’s a long maritime tradition that the captain be the last one off the sinking ship. Daniel Kaul, a

Costa Concordia cruise liner captain Francesco Schettino is escorted by an Italian policeman in Grosseto retired former engineering officer who served in the Indian Navy for eight years says, “Of course, he has to be the last one off! Whether he is the captain of a cruise liner or a warship, he has to take full responsibility. If you are the master of the ship, you are trained to take command. Your responsibility is first to your passengers, second to your crew, and then you look after yourself. That is the moral obligation.” Under current international regulations, each cruise company is necessitated to have a safety plan which details the responsibilities in the event of an emergency. But learning it in theory and putting it into action are two different things opines Sai Teja Linga, a third engineer serving on a ship for the last five years. “First and foremost, we are given courses on how to tackle situations in terms of
crises. But book learning is diametrically opposed to when you are faced with an emergency.” Keeping courage under fire is just a matter of self-discipline, which in the armed forces is part and parcel of life. “Two years ago, we were near France, where we were storing spare parts on the deck when suddenly one of the bigger spare parts rolled in and fell into the emergency room. Thankfully, we had a Pakistani captain who organised the rescue in an orderly fashion. He made sure that all of us were safe before he left the ship,” shares Sai. Whatever went wrong to cause the Concordia cruise ship disaster, most of the Concordia crew and passengers safely made it off the ship, with or without the captain who has been placed under house arrest.
been to. I took note of many builders. There was stiff competition.” However, when Mukesh took to the stage and posed, he laid to rest any doubt about who the winner would be. The crowd — mostly youngsters, of that a good part amateur builders — were howling out his number and name as if in some sort of frenzied trance. Mukesh, 39, is like a good vintage: he has only gotten better and more mature with time. He trains for three to four hours. For this tourney that was held at the Gachibowli stadium, training started about eight months back. A builder is in training
mode 24x7 throughout the year with variations in intensity. Mukesh’s diet, an integral part to a builder’s success, consisted of egg whites, chicken, and vegetables — boiled. Mukesh’s coach was proud as punch. “Mukesh is a fine example that shows this is a sport in which age does not matter.” “With age comes maturity. Youngsters who lost out should not despair. We have South Asia and Asia events lined up. And after these we plan to have Mukesh compete for the Mr Universe title.” “Yes, that’s what I want to do: make India proud and win medals for her,” averred Mukesh.
Textile traders go on strike till January 31 VAT HYDERABAD: Textile traders in the State brought down the shutters on their establishments demanding scrapping of the value-added tax on the goods they sell. The textile merchants will go on a strike until January 31, beginning Monday. The AP Federation of Textile Merchants Association’s convener for twin cities unit A Prakash disclosed that the VAT would cast a heavy burden on the traders. The State government was imposing a VAT of 5 per cent, whereas it wasn’t so much in
other states. This was levying a heavy burden on retail stores and the same was being passed on to the buyers. This was obviously encouraging those who wanted to take up bulk purchase to go to neighbouring states. Prakash said that the efforts of the Association which represented to the Chief Minister and several public representatives did not bear fruit. The Association would also take up relay hunger strikes at Indira Park from January 23 for nine days. He urged the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter and rescind the decision. Complaint filed on ‘Satanic’ reading JAIPUR: A complaint has been lodged with the police here against the four authors who read out excerpts from Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses in an unscheduled session of the Jaipur Literature Festival, police said on Sunday. It has been reported that the four writers who had read out excerpts from The Satanic Verses have left the State to avoid being arrested. The complainant, Ashok Kumar, a resident of Vashali Nagar area, here has claimed that the four authors — Hari Kunzru, Amitava Kumar, Jeet Thayil and Ruchir Joshi — read out the passages from the book which is banned in several countries across the world including India. “We received the complaint on Friday, but have asked the complainant to provide us with some evidence supporting his claim that these authors actually read out the excerpts from the book which is banned in the country for over 20 years,” a senior police officer said. The officer said that the complaint has not been turned into an

Team Anna also wrote separate missives to BJP president Nitin Gadkari, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati and other leaders questioning their parties’ stance on aspects of the legislation passed by the Lok Sabha last month. In letters, Hazare described home minister P Chidambaram as “corrupt” and wondered why the government wanted to keep the CBI in it’s grip. The letter said he was not sure whether the Congress will give Manmohan another chance to become the PM. IANS
Blast outside Manipur speaker’s house kills 1 IMPHAL: At least one person was killed and three others injured in a powerful explosion Sunday evening outside the residence of the speaker of the outgoing Assembly and Congress candidate in election-bound Manipur, an officer said. It was the third attack on candidates in the past two weeks. A police spokesperson said the explosion took place outside the
residence of Speaker and Congress party candidate I Hemochandra Singh on the outskirts of Imphal at around 6.15pm. “According to initial reports, it was an improvised explosive device that went off killing one person and injuring three more,” a senior police officer said. All the victims were bystanders or pedestrians.
More details of the blast were awaited. Writers want ban revoked A group of independent writers and artists on Sunday presented a petition supporting the right of all artists and writers to freedom of expression and revoking of the ban on The Satanic Verses. The Satanic Verses has not incited violence anywhere; others have used the novel’s existence to incite violence to suit their political ends. “Within India, in the 23 years since the ban, we have witnessed an erosion of respect for freedom of expression, as artists like MF Husain, Chandramuhun Srimantula, Jatin Das, and Balbir Krishan have been intimidated, and works of writers like Rohinton Mistry and AK Ramanujan have been withdrawn because of threats by groups claiming to be offended,” the petition said. Chopper not allowed to land, alleges Khurshid LUCKNOW: Union minister Salman Khurshid on Sunday accused Faizabad district administration of denying permission to land his chopper in Kumarganj area in Milkipur Assembly constituency at the behest of the Mayawati government, a charge denied by local authorities. Congress sources said the Khurshid’s helicopter hovered over Kumarganj where he was scheduled to address a rally. On refusal of permission, it proceeded to Alapur in adjoining Ambedkar Nagar district where another meeting was scheduled. After reaching Alapur Khurshid sent a message through
a mobilephone to people in Kumarganj meeting that at the behest of the BSP government, his chopper was denied landing permission due to which he had come to Alapur. The district administration, however, denied the allegation. Sub-divisional magistrate of Milkipur Amrit Lal and deputy superintendent of police SN Singh said over phone that a helipad was prepared at the site proposed by Congress leaders and senior officials, including district magistrate, were present on the spot. They said the chopper hovered over the marked spot for sometime after which the pilot expressed inability to land. PTI

This is not acceptable to us,” declared state BJP secretary Daya Shankar Singh, who along with
two of his co-secretaries, Santosh Singh and Ashwini Tyagi, have put in their papers in strong protest against the move. Singh and his two colleagues were understood to have shot off a joint letter off protest to state BJP chief Surya Pratap Shahi with a copy to national president Nitin Gadkari. The letter not only points out how the three office-bearers had struggled to rise to the state secretary level, but have also sought to draw the attention to what Gadkari has himself been telling people about his own rise. ‘Assad should transfer powers’
Syrians residing in Egypt join a rally outside Arab League headquarters in Cairo on Sunday during the Arab foreign ministers meeting. AFP CAIRO: The Arab League on Sunday asked the UN to support a new plan for resolving the crisis in Syria that sees President Bashar al-Assad transferring power to his deputy and a government of national unity within two months. Assad should “delegate powers to the vice-president to liaise with a government of national unity,” to be formed in two months, according to a state-
ment read by Qatari premier Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim AlThani after Arab foreign ministers met in Cairo to determine the fate of their observer mission. Deployed since December 26 to oversee an Arab League peace plan, the mission has been widely criticised for its failure to stem the government's bloody crackdown on democracy protesters. Earlier, Saudi Arabia’s foreign
minister said Riyadh had pulled its observers from the mission because the Syrian government had “not respected any of the clauses” in the Arab plan aimed at ending the crisis. The Arab League agreed, however, to extend the mission and boost the number of observers, according to the final statement. “We will inform the United Nations of all the resolutions of
the Arab League... for its approval,” Sheikh Hamad said. The League’s secretary general Nabil al-Arabi, who attended Sunday evening’s news conference, explained that the request to support the United Nations was designed to “give more weight” to the Arab initiative. The Arab foreign ministers urged Syrian government and all the opposition factions to engage in a serious dialogue under the auspices of the Arab League, within a period of not more than two weeks, to be able to achieve the formation of a unity government bringing together those in power and the opposition." The new government’s mission would be to implement the Arab League plan to end the crisis, and to prepare free and fair legislative and presidential elections. It would also prepare the election of a constituent assembly within three months and a new constitution which would be put to a referendum. The ministers tasked the bloc’s secretary general with nominating a special envoy to Syria who will be in charge of following developments in the country. According to latest reports coming in a Syrian official has stated that Syria has rejected Arab League’s call for Assad’s transfer of powers. AFP

Romney vs Gingrich moves on to Florida
Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. AFP MIAMI: Newt Gingrich set his sights on Sunday on Florida after a stunning win in South Carolina’s presidential primary, while main Republican rival Mitt Romney bowed to pressure to release his tax returns. Gingrich’s resounding victory Saturday turned the topsy-turvy race on its head, and his political resurrection ensures a dramatic 2012 battle to be the Republican standard-bearer against President Barack Obama on November 6. It shattered the aura of invincibility cloaking the former
Massachusetts governor and turned Florida’s January 31 primary into a pivotal contest that could either confirm Gingrich’s momentum or restore Romney as the frontrunner. Palm Beach County Republican Party chairman Sid Dinerstein said Florida was now the “make-or-break state” in the contest. “There is a very good chance therefore that after Florida the race is practically over,” he said “It was not a great week for me,” a stung Romney conceded to Fox News on Sunday after watching his substantial lead in South Carolina evaporate in a matter of days. Gingrich eventually won by 12.5 percentage points. The campaign rhetoric grew increasingly bitter as the multimillionaire investor Romney and the pugnacious former House speaker locked horns. Romney said there was no question he would go after his rival's character more strongly than he has, implying he would call out Gingrich on his past ethics charges and his admitted marital affairs. Bulk drugs capital losing its potency KV Ranga Rao Prudhvi Raju K prudhvi.k@postnoon.com
HYDERABAD: There is no mega pharmaceutical company started in the city in the last 15 years. Infrastructure is not developed by the government to support the industry. There are no rain water drainage systems, common effluent treatment plants, fire tenders near the plants, said KV Ranga Rao, executive director, Bulk Drug Manufacturers Association (BDMA). It takes two hours for a fire tender to go to Kazipally from the City. Serious damage can be done within two hours. Pharmaceutical industry is a red zone field and should be treated separately by the government. There are no proper facilities created for employees living near the pharmacy companies. There are no schools, government hospitals in and around 10 km area of Gaddapotharam and Kazipally, he added. Rao said there is a legal ban on the pharmacy industry to start or to expand operations in and around one kilometre of existing units in four districts. BDMA is expecting to get the ban lifted in the next six months for the growth of the industry. Talking about pollutants,
pharmaceutical industry is always targeted by Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), media and politicians. Ferrous industry and cement industry release more effluents. But, they are never in focus. Pharmaceutical Industry stands fifth in the list of hazardous pollutants but has become the most targeted industry. The companies have spent around Rs 250 crore in updating the equipment to decrease the pollutants in the last two years. “But still, APPCB is over enthusiastic. It is demanding much more than required,” he said. He stressed that if there is wound on the hand, cutting it is not the cure. The government
should change the way it is dealing with the industry. They should advise, help and work together with the industry for the solution. Those treated wastes can be sent deep into the sea according to the APPCB norms. The sea already has the TDS levels of 40,000 ml. This decreases the cost to companies. The industry is paying Rs1,600 crore to government towards taxes. The turnover of bulk drugs and pharma industry together is Rs one lakh crore and the margins range between five and 10 per cent. The industry’s growth rate is 10-15 per cent and export growth rate is 17.5 per cent according to March 2011 census. India is exporting drugs valued Rs 45,000

crore to the international markets, he said. Research and Development (R&D) is not happening in the industry. Only the five big-ticket pharmaceutical companies invest in R&D. It takes 10 years to develop new molecule, but the companies always look for quick returns. This is hindering the research in key areas. Visakhapatnam has an edge over Hyderabad due to the sea coast. The pharmaceutical companies have enough infrastructure and the TDS (total dissolved solids) levels in treated wastes can be at 40,000 ml in Visakhapatnam compared to 5,000 ml in Hyderabad, said J Sanjeeva Reddy, working president, Nalgonda drug manufacturers association.
Rate cuts unlikely in RBI review MUMBAI: India Inc’s hopes of a rate cut may not happen, atleast this time, even though inflation, the main worry of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has shown a significant decline. The RBI will conduct the third quarter review of the monetary policy on Tuesday. As per latest data, India’s annual food inflation continued to be in the negative for the third straight week. It was recorded at 0.42 percent for the week ended Jan 7 as compared to -2.9 percent and -3.36 percent consecutively in the previous two weeks. Overall inflation, based on the wholesale price index (WPI), too was down to a two-year low of 7.47 percent in December, 2011.These numbers have come as a relief to policymakers who have been trying combat high inflation mainly through 13 interest rate hikes since early 2010. But bankers don’t think the RBI will lower key interest rates just yet. “I don’t see moderation in the interest rate. I am not hopeful of a CRR (cash reserve ratio) cut,” said SBI chairman Pratip Chaudhuri. The cash reserve ratio defines the amount banks must deposit with the central bank. The ratio is tweaked to manage the liquidity in the market. “I think there would be strong measures to indicate that RBI wants inflation to be stamped out totally,” added Chaudhuri. IANS

Balsillie will remain a member of the board of directors. “I agree this is the right time to pass the baton to new leadership, and I
have complete confidence in Thorsten, the management team and the company,” he said. German-native Thorsten Heins, who joined RIM in December 2007 from the industrial conglomerate Siemens AG, will become the new president and chief executive officer. Prior to Sunday’s announcement, he was one of RIM’s two chief operating officers and, before that, senior vice president for the Handheld Business Unit. In a statement, Heins said he was confident that RIM was on the right path. “We have a strong balance sheet with approximately $1.5 billion in cash at the end of the last quarter and negligible debt,” he
noted. “We reported revenue of $5.2 billion in our last quarter, up 24 per cent from the prior quarter, and a 35-percent year-to-year increase in the BlackBerry subscriber base, which is now over 75 million.” But according to industry tracker comScore, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion’s share of the US smartphone market declined during the three months ending in November, while Apple and Google’s Android platform both made gains. The Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM saw its share of US smartphone subscribers fall to 16.6 per cent at the end of November from 19.7 per cent at the end of August, according to comScore. AFP

W
hat on earth is going on in the Republican Party? Obama and his re-election campaign team must be positively ecstatic after Newt Gingrich hammered Mitt Romney at the polls in South Carolina. This rabid infighting means that republican presidential hopefuls are running through their war chests at a phenomenal rate. It also means that by sniping each other they are giving the Democrats an arsenal of ammunition with which to beat them about their heads in November. The conservative backing of Gingrich to stem the Romney tide could see an irreparable split in the party. Romney is the only candidate with any real chance of beating Obama this year, and unless the Republicans want four more years of Barack, they’d better get their act together and back a winning horse...and his name is Mitt

bodybuilder once said: “The harder you train, the bigger you get, and the bigger you get...the more small people there are in the world.” From the days of Charles Atlas bodybuilding has been a world mired in controversy. But there’s one thing for sure, being a bodybuilder takes years of hard work and wincing amount of pain. Bodybuilders have a focus that few other professionals have, and come what may, their path is constant. As Sylvester Stallone said: “No pain, no gain”. Bodybuilders go through a lot of pain, their gain? A ripple in the mirror.
icrofinance as a concept hit a roadblock in India. When someone offers cash sans any security or questions, it is difficult to resist the lure of lucre. The indigent tend to avail themselves of the crumbs even if it costs little dearer. This typical human weakness seemed to be a cash cow for some institutions. At the outset, capitalising on this enticing opportunity appeared plausible for Microfinance institutions what with an overwhelming response from the subjects, who took a little longer than usual to realise the intricacies. When they deciphered the dogma, the street-corner moneylender, who was always seen as a villain de peace, shone in contrast. Thus, microfinance is a failure for sure in India, as there is no revenue model for the unsecured loans. There is no way the microfinance institutions can be put back on track, unless they take the route of a non-banking financial institution (NBFC). The transformation of a micro-lender from being a not-for-profit institution in the form of a non-governmental organisation to an NBFC to a local area bank offering savings and other banking services akin to Prof. Muhammad Yunus’s Grameen Bank model in Bangaldesh is not easy in India, thanks to the regulatory environment. Let us demystify the complicated sector only to understand why the ‘for-profit’ model of microfinance too failed in India. Grameen and other microfinance models have the participation of borrowers. To put in a nutshell, we may liken the same to cooperative model where lenders and borrowers are equity-holders who surely would not dent the institutional interests, at any cost. When some microfinance institutions (MFIs) took up micro-lending activity, they were pretty sure that the borrower is investing the loan amount in an income-generating activity. Share and BASIX are live example of the same.

I am writing to let you know that your travel column is simply fabulous! I wait to read it each Sunday. I love the pictures and the design so kudos to the designing team! I also wanted to suggest a theme for each travel page. Maybe you could cover places that are worth visiting during the season. This will also help us plan accordingly if we are going to take a vacation. When it comes to a few other for-profit MFIs, the story is completely different. I know of a few families which borrowed a sum of `5,000 to `12,000 to celebrate a family function or go on a pilgrimage. They were obliged to repay a sum of `250 a week and the interest rate ran into a whopping 36 per cent to 48 per cent. This could happen to your trusted maid or driver too. In case any borrower of this kind fails to repay an instalment, he/she — usually, it is the woman of the family, as loans are given mostly to women groups — incurs the wrath of the lending company, which entrusts the task of collection to goons who would armtwist them. The MFI neither verifies the repayment capacity of the borrower, nor does it make any need-analysis before offering the loan. If the borrowed amount is used for establishing a small motor mechanic shop or a tailoring unit or anything of that ilk, it generates some

income and the part of the proceeds can be earmarked to service the debt. But the economics of a poor family crumble, when the loan from MFI is like a hand-loan it is used to raising on and off. With a view to subjecting the defaulters to ‘peer pressure’, the group model was chosen as a weapon for surreptitious coercion by MFIs. However, the ‘domino’ effect, wherein all members of the entire group gang up and refuse to repay, turned out to be a dampener to the microfinance. Andhra Pradesh Government’s laggard Act that infused politically-motivated restriction on the MFIs drilled a hole in the books of the MFIs. But the recommendations of Malegam committee at the behest of the Reserve Bank of India broadly provided the framework for a healthy functioning of the industry. Yet, the ‘for-profit’ MFIs apparently reached a cul de sac. They can neither walk back nor can they surge ahead.

now-peaked mountains, rugged landscapes, fine dining and fun shopping — we all love a good vacation. So what’s in your suitcase checklist — creams, clothes, camera and vaccinations? Yes, travelling to certain countries requires vaccinations. What exactly is a vaccination? A vaccination in simple terms is a means to help strengthen the immune system against certain diseases. For many countries vaccinations are compulsory. “The Institute of Preventive Medicine in Narayanaguda is authorised to give vaccinations for travel, they will give a yellow immunisation card. To take a vaccination you have to book a slot online. The vaccinations there are quite subsidised,” mentions Dr Raj Kumar Songa, consultant physician, Kamineni Hospitals, Abids.
Yellow Fever Yellow fever is caused by a virus that is spread by the bite of mosquitoes. “It is mainly prevalent in South America and African nations and must be taken at least 10 days before the date of travel,” explains Dr Raj Kumar. Hepatitis A is an infectious disease of the liver that is caused by the Hepatitis A virus. It is high in areas with poor hygiene. Vaccines for both children and adults are available.
“Certain vaccinations such as the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine require a booster shot after one month hence it is important to plan travel in advance. Most other vaccinations also require a minimum of two weeks. In case a person requires multiple vaccines, it is advised that they take it on the same day. Once a vaccination is taken one should not take vaccinations with intermittent gaps. For example if you take a vaccination today it is not right to take a vaccination after say 2-3 days. Any other vaccination then should be taken only after four weeks,” mentions Dr Raj Kumar.

When and why is hormone therapy used? If a patient has a hormone sensitive breast cancer, then she is offered hormone therapy as part of her treatment to help prevent breast cancer from coming back. Hormone therapy usually starts after surgery, but if chemotherapy is part of the treatment schedule, then it is started after completion of chemotherapy. Some people are given hormone therapy before surgery to try and shrink large tumours. This is known as Neo Adjuvant treatment. Why is hormone therapy not given along with chemotherapy? There is evidence to suggest that the effect and impact of chemotherapy can be impaired by administering chemotherapy and hormone therapy together. Therefore, hormone therapy is given only after completion of chemotherapy. What are the drugs used in hormone therapy? There are several different types of hormone therapy drugs and the specialist will consider the most suitable treatment for a particular individual. Generally, they are given for some years to prevent the chances of breast cancer returning. The drugs commonly used are Tamoxifen, Zoladex, Anastrazole, Letrozole and Examestane. The appropriate drug is decided by the specialist in consultation with the patient. What are the side effects of hormone therapy? The common side effects include hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings. Some people experience weight gain and joint pains. If the side effects are severe, then the specialist may consider switching from one hormone therapy drug to another. Asthma: the price of modernity
Postnoon News

Duck out of quack nutrition
B
y now, most of us are already sick of reading about January weightloss tips and fitness drives. But when people awake to the realisation that their bodies are in desperate need of an overhaul, instead of settling down to some hard work to change things for the better, many look for quick-fix solutions. The same applies to those diagnosed with illnesses where the prognosis is not good. Desperation leads to vulnerability and this is where the cowboys come in, promising the world, charging lots, but delivering little. A muchblogged example is Stanislaw Burzynski, whose clinic in Houston, Texas, claims to provide innovative, cutting-edge “Personalised Gene-Targeted Cancer Therapy”. But no independent studies have been able to confirm or reproduce what few results Burzynski has published and his treatments have
been called scientific nonsense by a number of people. Despite this, patients still scrape together the huge sums he charges and celebs even help raise funds to send cancer patients to his clinic — even though there is no evidence for the success of his treatments. Quackery abounds in the field of diet and nutrition. Superfoods and vitamin supplements are a myth, while a recent study by Which? magazine found that nutritionists are providing advice that could harm health. The researchers posed as patients with a range of problems and visited a range of “nutritional therapists” for advice. All but one offered either potentially dangerous or misleading advice. One researcher, posing as a breast cancer sufferer, was told to delay radiotherapy recommended by her oncologist, saying they could rid the body of cancer through diet. If we could cure cancer through diet instead of toxic, costly drugs and radiotherapy we would be doing it. The simple truth is that we can’t. Another therapist advised a researcher not to contact his GP as they “wouldn’t understand what was happening.” As well as crank treatments many therapists also offer diagnostic tests
that will diagnose absolutely nothing. Diseases cannot be diagnosed from the iris, hair samples, test tubes of substances and measuring muscle tone or from tarot cards. Do your own research into these methods before parting with any money, as chances are they will disappoint. It is admirable to seek help for dietary and weight issues, as doing it alone can be hard, but choose wisely. Look for evidence of recognised qualifica-
tions. A trained dietician is very different indeed from a nutritional therapist. Anyone can set up shop as a nutrition therapist, with no qualifications, but registered dieticians in the UK are educated to degree level and must be registered with the Health Professions Council. If a therapist blinds with science, then the chances are there is little science to back up their claims. Best avoided.
ave you ever wondered why over the last few years the incidence of asthma has been increasing in our country? It is a price we’re paying for the modern world we live in. “Changing lifestyle habits, rising pollution levels, increase in diesel exhaust fumes and poor nutritional status are the culprits here,” says Dr SV Praveen, consultant pulmonologist at Care Hospital, Nampally. Although we don’t have any national studies to determine the exact incidence of asthma, according to Dr Praveen, there has been a 20 per cent rise in the cases. “While for some people asthma runs in families, in others various triggering factors play a role like cold air, pollution, infections and dust. Other factors include increase in the use of perfumes, smoke, exertion, extreme emotions, certain medications, animal fur and pollen,” says Dr Praveen, who also practices at Varma’s clinic at Attapur. While asthma cannot be cured it can be controlled. “Regular and correct treatment can go a long way in controlling asthma. In fact, a person with asthma can lead a normal life if they’re regular with their treatment. Avoiding trigger factors can help too,” says Dr Praveen. Usually doctors recommend using preventive medication to keep attacks at bay. “Often people think that nebulisers are used only if the asthma is very severe. But that is not true, it is just a different mode of administering the medication and the advantage it has is that it does not require a technique to administer it like is the case with inhalers,” he says. “Besides, inhalers are not the last resort in asthma treatment. There are injections available as well,” he adds. One of the most common mistakes patients make is that they try to control their own treatment. But these decisions should best be left to the doctor. Treatment cannot be generalised, he says, as each person responds differently. He adds that while initially the patient should see the doctor within a week and once his/her condition stabilises then visiting the doctor once every two or three months works.

STUDENT SPEAK Coolest thing about college Campus! We absolutely love our campus; it’s green and has a lot of corners where we can hang out. Another cool thing would be our friendly and approachable teachers. Also, we do not have a dress code, unlike other colleges, which gives us a lot of freedom to experiment with our styles. And a lot of foreign students, especially Africans study here, and they are amazing fun to have around!
Fashion trends in college Our college has students from different backgrounds, so the fashion trends are also very diverse. You can see boys sporting baggy jeans and some wearing kurtas. Nerdy glasses are a hit with the guys these days. And talking of girls, chunky animal lockets and jholas are making a great fashion statement these days.
Coolest hang-out places We love to hang-out in the canteen, especially when we get to binge on the Indian dishes offered here. Outside the college we hang-out at Coffee Cup, Cakes n Coffee and 5th Avenue Bakery.
Music playing on your iPod The college is completely mesmerised by Agneepath numbers. Aunty ji from Ek Mein Aur Ekk Tu’ is also on everyone’s iPod. Michael Jackson can never go out of fashion in this college.
Things you want to change about the college Nothing! We love our college the way it is. We’re proud to be here.

havans College, located in RK Puram, is one of the most vibrant colleges in town. Apart from the beautiful, green campus and a diverse range of students, the best feature of the college is that it offers a plethora of clubs.
Xpressionz Any student who is enrolled in the college is virtually a part of Xpressionz, which is the cultural
club. Be it a college fest or any other event, the members of this club set the stage on fire with their performances.
Gre-Energy Gre-energy is a life sciences club. The club is responsible for maintaining an eco-friendly atmosphere in the campus. A few weeks back the club had planted trees all over campus. Various competitions are organised by the club, like short-film making, paper writing, poster presentation etc, and students from different streams flock to work in the
service of Mother Nature.
Vivekananda club An initiative of a senior lecturer, Venu Madhav, who teaches HR to MBA students, is another striking club of Bhavans. The club seeks to teach management using Indian philosophy. The club recently arranged Youth Day celebrations, during which an essay writing competition and elocution were conducted.
VOICE The Commerce club encompasses every commerce activity. This
two-year-old club fosters the business knowledge of its members by conducting business quizzes. A Mr and Ms Voice pageant is held every year for freshers from the Commerce stream.
Quiz club Formed just a few months ago, it aims to train students to face difficult quiz competitions. A great deal of improvement has been seen in this club recently. A group from this club has won the NDTV gadget quiz a few weeks earlier.
Lecturer Speak How long have you been teaching? I’ve been teaching since 1994. That is 15 years. So you must have seen a lot of changes happening in the college, with the students. Not much really. Things keep changing with each batch. But one thing I can say is that students have become much more serious now. Blame it on the competition all around if you want. But this seriousness also varies from subject to subject. Talking about changes, how did you cope with the technological advances happening around you with respect to your subject? It was a little difficult, but we’ve got to keep moving with the times. The computer was a big change. Now
most of the accounting is done on computers. We had to learn and then teach the students. I try to keep myself updated, ensuring the students get maximum exposure to everything available. What kind of an approach do students have towards accounts and taxation? A single mistake can ruin all the work put in. Does that harbour fear towards the subject? Not at all; I try my level best to make it comfortable, easy and simplify it as much as I can. We take extra classes to make sure enough work is being put in by the students also. Do you see shortcomings in today’s generation? Not many, to be honest. Just that sometimes students seem to lack ethi-
cal and moral values. But apart from that, students these days are really cooperative and flexible. They’re ready to work long hours and time isn’t a big issue with them.
With the recent stream of scams taking place, dirty and corruptive accounting is being put to blame. Do you think ethical values must be imparted along
with the subject? We try to inculcate ethical and moral values among the students in our best capacities. After that it is for them and their conscience to decide. How has your experience been so far? It’s been beautiful; great actually. I got to learn so much from the faculty and the students. I’m still learning. What according to you is your greatest challenge as a lecturer? Since teaching for me, is a passion, I don’t look at obstacles as challenges. They are just a stepping stone for me. GETTING THE FOUNDATION RIGHT
Lingerie is perhaps the sexiest and the most important of items in a woman's wardrobe and it is critical to make the right choices Dos n Lingerie made of natural fibre such as pure silk, French lace or cotton is appropriate n Measure yourself before buying n Spend time in buying good stuff n Try a new style that suits your body n Dress up in the right kind of lingerie that emphasises your assets and camouflages faults
Don'ts n Do not buy lingerie that is made from synthetic material as it is not durable and can cause discomfort n Stop wearing uncomfortable undergarments; though simple, it's something most women ignore. Women need to understand that better fit gives a better feel about body and lingerie
TREND SPOTTING
n Do not wear them till they are tattered and lose their original shape and size; trash the old ones
Taniya Talukdar taniya.t@postnoon.com
"L
ingerie is the foundation of a woman's wardrobe," said famous fashion designer Stella McCartney and she surely knows it all. Stella, who is 'obsessed' about lingerie and takes it very seriously, knows only too well about the allimportant role that lingerie plays. No matter what you wear, it pays to make sure that you have the right lingerie underneath it all. Celebrated designer Sanchita Ajjampur only knows it too well. She says, "The right outfit is the key when it comes to looking presentable and making a good impression. But, what is under the dress is
equally important. Lingerie and well-fitted undergarments helps put the entire look together." When picking lingerie, it is not only the colour and design, which play a pivotal role, one has to keep in mind that comfort and the correct fit is key and style follows it. Sanchita advises, "Like a pair of shoes, never buy lingerie that isn't comfortable as you wear it throughout the day." Actor Kainaz Motivala perhaps couldn't agree more with Sanchita. She says, "The right lingerie is probably one of the most important things women should invest in. It can help you enhance the way you look in your clothes. A lot of women, especially in India wear wrong
sized bras and that's not right, both looks wise and in the long run for the body shape. Also, your bra size changes with time, so it's good to keep measuring and buying the right size, rather than sticking to a size you wore 10 years ago. Also, wearing seamless bras and panties under dresses and t-shirts is a good idea. You don't want the whole world to see the designs." Carrying a spare set makes sense when you have to go through several costume changes, "As an actress, it's important to carry a lot of different kinds of lingerie to shoot because you sometimes have 2–3 changes in a day and you might need different lingerie for different clothes," confesses Kainaz.
Always get yourself measured when buying a bra as it changes with time and also make sure that the bra you select fits you perfectly. Model Faith Pandey says, "Getting the right fit is important because it defines shapes and protects some very important assets! The comfort factor and the appearance, even though it’s always concealed, are important as well. Most women I feel go wrong with cup sizes. They wear either too big or too tight and on the whole, a woman wearing wrong lingerie, looks bad. So it’s always wise to know your size and try on lingerie before buying. Usually brands like Etam or Triumph also have a guide to buying the right-size bra and
that's important to know. Also, knowing what works for you, padded, underwire, etc, is also important, for example, women with a heavy front should stay away from pushups." Designer Michelle Salins makes sure to advice her brides on what kind of lingerie to go for whenever she designs for them. "I tell them not only the kind of lingerie they should go for but also which brand to choose," says Michelle going on to add, "The kind of dress that they wear and also their comfortable level is important when choosing the lingerie." Sanchita lists down some Dos and Don'ts that women need to keep in mind when going lingerie shopping.

The glamour behind the glitz

M
ahesh Babu might have ruled out making his debut in Hindi, but gone are the days when Telugu actors used to shy away from acting in other languages. Today, the new generation in Telugu film industry has made its presence felt in other languages and filmmakers in other languages are keen on casting Telugu actors irrespective of their unfamiliarity with the local audience. Back in the ‘90s, stars like Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh and Nagarjuna tested their luck in Bollywood and films like Shiva,
Anari and Zakhm met with reasonable critical and commercial success at box-office. However, such instances were few and far between. Then in 2006, Siddharth played one of the lead roles in Rakeysh Mehra’s Rang De Basanti and he later went on to act in another film titled Striker. In 2011, actors like Rana Daggubati and Sundeep Kishan made a huge splash in Bollywood in Dum Maaro Dum and Shor respectively. And now there’s a buzz that Ram Charan Tej is going to make his Bollywood debut in the remake of Zanjeer. “I love cinema and I don’t mind acting in any language as long as I like the script. I am a Telugu film actor at heart, but the fact that filmmakers and audience have accepted actors like me is a big deal for me. Acting in Shor has been a big jump for me on a national scale,” Sundeep Kishan says. While remakes have been in vogue since the early ‘70s, Telugu filmmakers like LV Prasad, Adurthi Subbarao, K Raghavendra Rao and K Vishwanath had made quite a few Hindi films during their prime. And then in 1990, RGV made a big splash in Hindi with Shiva and went on to make several critically acclaimed films like Drohi, Satya, Company and Sarkar among many other films. Last year, Puri Jagannadh directed
Buddah Hoga... Tera Baap with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role and now he’s planning to make Businessman in Hindi. Other directors like Srinu Vaitla, Surender Reddy and Sukumar have all evinced their interest in directing a Hindi film. The prospect of raking in big bucks and reaching out to a wider audience seems to be luring filmmakers to cherish Bollywood dreams. It’s not just Bollywood, several actors are seriously considering to expand their market in Tamil and Malayalam film industries. Allu Arjun is extremely popular in Kerala and almost all his films have got tremendous openings in the state dominated by veteran actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal. With Bollywood films raking big bucks for the past few years, Telugu and Tamil film industries are collaborating like never before and several bilingual films are in the offing. SS Rajamouli’s Eega, A Karunakaran’s Endhukante Premanta, Gautham Menon’s Neethane En Ponvasantham, AR Murugadoss’ Thuppaki and Balaji Mohan’s Love Failure are some of the bilingual films that are lined up for release this year. Whether our Telugu actors and filmmakers can reap the benefits of their initial success in Bollywood and Tamil cinema or not remains to be seen.

Devika Rani and Himansu Rai in Karma ou might be surprised but the first official kiss in the history of Bollywood took place as early as in 1933. The famous actress Devika Rani kissed her reallife husband Himansu Rai in the movie Karma for four long minutes. The kiss created quite a stir at that time and was said to be one of the most controversial scenes for the culturally orthodox India at that time.
Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani his period in Bollywood was a transformation phase from that garish ‘90s era of bling and overdose of drama. Raja Hindustani saw Karisma in a complete makeover and added to that makeover was this long kiss, which was not seen on screen for a long time. The almost dooming career of Lolo was lifted by this movie and of course the kiss, which sure made it a must-watch, between our brainy Khan and the Kapoor girl.

ollywood has undergone a sea change from the time it has come into being. Acting, directing, music, dance or any other section in this land of fairy tales has evolved with time and so have thought processes. Look back into the blackand-white era and today’s generation nowhere relates to it in any sense; be it the sto-
ries or simply the way they talked. We talk of being modern and open to intimacy and mush in our movies when compared to the earlier era but look closely and you might surprise yourself. Thinking of old times, the only image that comes to our minds about kissing are that of two flowers or two birds ‘necking’. So when did this much-talked about and hyped ‘kiss’ officially debut in Bollywood? We follow the evolution of the kiss in tinsel world.

ditor-turned-director Shirish Kunder says his much ambitious 3D project Joker is not a comedy film unlike what the title suggests. “Joker has some humour but its not a comedy. Maybe because of the word Joker, it is presumed as a comedy. But even Mera Naam Joker was not a comedy,” the 38-year-old posted on micro-blogging site Twitter. Starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles, the film is set for a 2012 release. Kunder, married to choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan, denied the film was inspired by 2010 Hollywood film Alice in Wonderland. He says the only thing common is the fantasy factor. Joker is being jointly produced by Kunder and Farah’s Three’s Company and Akshay Kumar’s Hari Om Entertainment Co. In the past, Kunder has edited films like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om.
fter keeping mum on her love affair with Riteish Deshmukh, actress Genelia D’Souza is finally talking about it. With just 10 days left for their wedding, the 24-year-old says she is impressed with her to-be-husband’s spontaneity as an actor. “I feel Riteish is a phenomenal actor. The best part about him is that he is so spontaneous that he can come up with things on the spot, which was great,” Genelia, who is ready to tie the knot Feb 3, said in an interview. The duo made their Bollywood debut together with Tujhe Meri Kasam in 2003. In the following year, they shared screen space in Masti, and now, after eight years, they are featuring together in Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, which will release on Feb 24. “I am hoping that we have both grown (as actors) and both of us are lot more responsible for sure... When I started off I had no clue what I was doing... but it’s great to work with someone with whom you share such a close relationship,” she said about working with Riteish, son of Mahrashtra’s former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. But does their real life chemistry translate to a sizzling reel life chemistry too? “Chemistry is about two people looking good together. But I also think it’s about how it’s written. You are too smart an actor when you know how to pick up each other’s pain and that’s
how chemistry comes....we (Riteish and I) discovered each other as actor after seven long years,” said Genelia. For now, the actress is uber excited for her D-day, and says she is busy wrapping up all her shopping for it.

S
eal and Heidi Klum are not headed for divorce court just yet, a source close to them tells People. Contrary to reports that surfaced on Saturday, “They’ve been fighting a lot lately, but they have no plans to announce a split right now,” the source says. “They’re not divorcing.” But they have been weathering a rough patch. According to the insider, in recent months, distance has tested the famously lovey-dovey pair. On tour to promote his new album, Soul 2, Seal recently flew solo to New York to appear on Late Show with David Letterman, then to London for more commitments. Back together at their Brentwood, Calif home on Saturday, “they seem to be doing a lot better,” the source adds. “They’re both wearing their wedding bands.” But there’s more time apart on the horizon. While Seal is due to appear this week on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Tavis Smiley — all of which tape in and around Los Angeles — Klum is expected to travel to Germany soon to promote the seventh season of Germany’s Next Top Model, which premieres on Feb 23.

The glamour behind the glitz
012 is already shaping up to be Abigail Spencer’s breakthrough year. The supporting actress, who has scored small roles in Cowboys and Aliens and This Means War, was just signed to star in Joss Whedon’s soon-to-shoot supernatural romance In your Eyes. And now THR has uncovered the will-be leading lady has also made the leap to screenwriter. Spencer, who is most often recognised for her work as Don Draper’s mistress on Mad Men, has penned a romantic comedy called Wrong Number about a couple whose meet-cute happens during a mis-dialed call. The film, which will be Anna Rose King’s feature-length directorial debut, is the first of six co-productions between James Franco’s Rabbit Bandini Productions, Victorino Noval Productions, and Edward Bass Films. Spencer will act as a producer as well as star, playing a married woman who is driven by grief over her father’s death to recklessly pursue the stranger from a wrong number. The cast also includes Andrew Leeds, Matt Gould, Griffin Matthews, Camille Chen and Eric Robertson.

Beckham S Boys and Gomez team up for a good cause
elena Gomez headlined a charity concert at LA’s House of Blues last night. Selena raised more than $200,000 for UNICEF, and she also got a big surprise when David Beckham and his three sons dropped by to see the show. David, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz made it a boys’ night out while Victoria stayed home with little Harper. It’s been an exciting week for the Beckhams following the official announcement that David will play two more years with the LA Galaxy. Hopefully that means we’ll

see more shirtless victory laps around the Home Depot centre from the soccer star, but for now we can admire his David’s sexy H&M bodywear ads. Selena’s boyfriend Justin Bieber missed out on last night’s showcase, but her pal Ashley Tisdale came out to see the performance. Justin’s been in the studio working on his next album, but he managed to sneak away and take Selena to Disneyland last week. Justin and Selena were spotted kissing at a Jamba Juice following their visit to the happiest place on earth.

uring a preview of the first episode at the Soho House in West Hollywood, Lopez, Anthony and show director Jamie King are seen traveling to countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Puerto Rico in search of talent for their new reality show. In some of the segments, the former power couple openly discuss their relationship. Anthony says that they’re “going to be in each other’s lives” for a long time. The conversations between Anthony and Lopez are seen as they
travel to their destinations in Latin America. Lopez and Anthony, who began traveling last year to find talent, also showed up the Television Critics Association press tour on Jan 14 as part of Univision’s upfront session, which included discussion about the show and what it took to create a ‘new genre’ in English, Spanish and Portuguese. There will be four versions of the show and it will be sub-titled for each viewing audience. Lopez, Anthony, XIX Entertainment’s Simon Fuller (creator of American Idol), and show director Jamie King are executive producers of Q’Viva featuring Latin music, artistry and dance from the US and Latin America. Dutch reality TV show producer Endemol (Big Brother/Fear Factor) is a production partner with XIX Entertainment and will globally distribute Q’Viva across all platforms globally. At the end of the show in April, a live spectacle with those featured on the programme will begin touring. In an interview with Billboard to promote Q’Viva, King said that this is one of the biggest projects he has ever worked on in a career as a choreographer and show director.

ee-haw! Our favourite Kardashian, Mason Disick, turned two last month and his proud mum Kourtney Kardashian didn’t hold back on celebrating her little guy’s big day. Hosted by grandparents Kris Jenner and Bruce Jenner at their Hidden Hills, Calif home, Mason’s bash celebrated the day in style — complete with a fullon petting zoo and an enormous cowboy-hat birthday cake! Joined by family members including Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner and Rob Kardashian as well as dad Scott Disick, Mason enjoyed making crafts with dad and riding a pony with grandma Kris. We can’t imagine what year three will bring, not to mention
baby No two’s arrival! But if it’s as much crazy cuteness as this, we can’t wait.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

MELBOURNE: Andy Murray
Ana stumped by wonders of Petra MELBOURNE: Reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (above) downed Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Monday. After cruising through the first set Kvitova held off a late fight-back from the Serb to win 6-2, 7-6 (7/2) in 85 minutes in the first match of the day in the Rod Laver Arena. The tall left-hander broke Ivanovic twice in the first set and once in the second, but was herself broken when serving for the match at 5-4. produced some big serves to take the set into a tiebreak. And Kvitova took charge of in the tiebreak, quickly opening a 6-2 lead and sealing a place in the quarter-finals when an Ivanovic backhand hit the bottom of the net.
(below) took the easy route Monday to the Australian Open quarter-finals when Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin retired injured, as Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova fought off a case of the yips. Under blazing sun Murray, seeking Britain’s first grand slam title since before World War II, was always in command and he led 6-1, 6-1, 1-0 when Kukushkin pulled out with a hip muscle injury on 49 minutes. The truncated match ended an entertaining run by Kukushkin, inevitably dubbed “Borat” by the British press, who won an oddball encounter in the previous round to become Kazakhstan’s best male grand slam performer. “It’s so hot on the court,” said Murray, who will play JoWilfried Tsonga or Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals. “It’s obviously good for me that I got to conserve a bit of energy. It’s tough for him — it’s his first fourth round in a slam, and he’s obviously
Listless Serena goes down to Makarova RUSSIA'S Ekaterina Makarova seized on a listless performance from Serena Williams to send the five-time champion crashing out in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Monday. Makarova recorded a huge upset when she won 6-2, 6-3 to reach her first ever grand slam quarter-final. struggling.” Murray remains on course for a semi-final with defending champion Novak Djokovic, who plays Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt later, while Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are into the last eight on the other side of the draw. Kukushkin had caused bemusement in his five-set win over Gael Monfils, who was severely restricted by a back injury. But the Kazakh was unable to press his advantage, resulting in a series of rallies played at half-pace.
The Czech world number two hit more than twice as many winners as Ivanovic — 30 to 14 — which proved the difference between the two players. “It was quite a hard match at the end of the second set,” she said, adding that she was happy to be off the court early on a typically hot Melbourne day. “I think I was quite lucky I played my match at 11 o’clock. It’s hot, but we are in Australia so we are ready for it.” Kvitova has now reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne for the second year in row and will next play either Italian Sara Errani or Zheng Jie from China.
Tomic dreams of joining Gang of Four MELBOURNE: Rising teenage star Bernard Tomic (right), unbowed after a harsh tennis lesson from Roger Federer at the Australian Open, says he could gatecrash the men’s top four as early as next year. The Swiss 16-time grand slam champion gave a masterclass in guile and big-match experience in Sunday’s clinical 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over the 19-year-old Australian to set up a quarter-final with Juan Martin del Potro. It ended Tomic’s run of success in Melbourne, during which he wowed the home crowds with vic-
tories over seeds Fernando Verdasco and Alexandr Dolgopolov. But Tomic, who last year became the youngest man in 25 years to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, is far from deflated by the loss to his boyhood hero and has his sights set on a place among the men’s elite. The ‘Big Four’ of Federer, world number one Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray currently exert an iron grip at the top of the men’s game but Tomic is undaunted. “I think, you know, it could be very soon,” Tomic said of his
chances of breaking into the top four. “The next, you know, year, year-and-a-half, if I improve my body and get stronger. “But I think until then I can play great tennis this year and... take my ranking to a good spot this year.” Tomic, who has already tested himself against each of the top four, coming off second best each time, predicted he would climb the rankings from his current position of 38, enabling him to be seeded at grand slams and therefore avoid the big names early on. “I’m just happy I don’t have to
defend any points for six months. I can play tournaments and play relaxed and know I’m just going to go up. Every match I win I go up.” Tomic shook his head in admiration during Sunday’s match as a stream of winners flew from Federer’s racquet. “The harder I hit it, you know, the ball comes back in a different corner and ends up always being a winner. “It’s very strange. Never did experience my balls that I hit that hard to come back and to be a winner. It’s good to watch, you know. Even for me.”

Patriots, Giants in Superbowl
Paterno dies of
‘broken heart’ WASHINGTON: Penn State’s iconic American football coach Joe Paterno died Sunday of lung cancer, leaving a legacy sadly tarnished by a pedophilia scandal that rocked America. “It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today,” the Paterno family said in a statement. “His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled. He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been.” Mount Nittany Medical Center said the sports hero died of metastatic small cell carcinoma. “Joe was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing, and they request privacy during this difficult time,” the hospital said in a statement. Paterno, 85, guided the Nittany Lions to 409 victories — more than any other top-level US collegiate coach in history. The fame of Penn State’s gridiron team burnished the university’s reputation nationwide, but Paterno’s storied career ended under a cloud. Students and other admirers had gathered on Saturday night in an impromptu vigil on the campus after the Paterno family confirmed the coach’s health was deteriorating. Matt Millen, who played for Paterno at Penn State from 197679 before going on to a career as an NFL player and executive, voiced the affection that many still felt for Paterno. “What we’ve lost today won’t be replaced. All the stuff that’s gone on the last two months, I can’t help but think he died of a broken heart.”
WASHINGTON: New England overcame three turnovers and a sub-par performance from quarterback Tom Brady (right) to edge Baltimore 23-20 in an NFL playoff game Sunday, sending the Patriots into their seventh Super Bowl. Brady scored on a 1-yard run with 11:29 remaining but the outcome was not settled until Baltimore kicker Billy Cundiff missed wide of the left upright on an attempt at an equalizing 32yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining. The Patriots will face the New York Giants in Super Bowl 46 on February 5 at Indianapolis, Indiana. “We’re going to try to go out and kick some butt in a couple of weeks,” said Brady. New England has won the Super Bowl three times, all under Brady’s direction, in 2002, 2004 and 2005. The Patriots lost the championship spectacle in 1986, 1997 and 2008, when their bid for a perfect season was spoiled by the Giants. Brady, who will match John Elway with a record five career Super Bowl starts, improved to 10-2 in home playoff games and 5-1 in American Conference finals over his 11 seasons as a starter for New England. Brady had thrown for a career-high 5,235 yards this season, the second-best total in NFL history, for an offense that led the league in total yardage per game.
But he was only 22-of-36 for 239 yards two inteceptions on Sunday. “I sucked pretty bad today but our defense saved us,” Brady said. Brady dived over his blockers on a fourth-down play inches from the goal line for a touchdown that gave the Patriots a 2320 lead with 11:29 remaining, capping an 11-play, 63-yard drive. Baltimore coach John Harbaugh chose not to have Cundiff
attempt a 51-yard field goal, having seen him make only 1-of6 from beyond 50 yards all season. But Flacco was incomplete on a fourth-down-and-six-yard pass play. “It was a big night for us,” said Vince Wilfork, who made six tackles. “We knew we had to come out and play some good football.” The Patriots took over with 2:45 remaining but could not run out the clock, setting the stage for Baltimore’s final drive.
Business as usual at Cup of Nations Nick Reeves
LIBREVILLE: Normal order was restored on day two of the Africa Cup of Nations after the opening day upsets, with Ivory Coast and Angola putting points on the board. Captain Didier Drogba (right, in orange) eased Ivorian nerves with the only goal of the game against a Sudan side whose gutsy performance belied their lowly FIFA ranking 102 points below the Cup favourites. That tense encounter was followed by Angola’s explosive 2-1 defeat of Burkina Faso, with former Manchester United striker Manucho grabbing the winner.
After Zambia had seen off the better fancied Senegal and cohosts and competition newcomers Equatorial Guinea’s defeat of Libya the stage was set
Sunday for more upsets. And Sudan certainly played their part as they harried and contained Ivory Coast’s star-studded side in the first leg of this Group B double
bill in Malabo. But Drogba muzzled the Nile Crocodiles when he rose to head in a superb cross from his Chelsea club team-mate Salomon Kalou six minutes before the interval. He struck a relieved figure afterwards, saying: “Overall it’s a decent start. We displayed positive things and other things less good, but the most important aspect for us was to get off to a winning start.” Angola went top of the group on goal difference after Manucho’s 68th-minute goal earned the 2010 Cup hosts the important win after Burkina Faso’s Alain Traore had cancelled out the opener from Mateus.

Operation Salvage Pride begins Twelth Man Babu Kalyanpur
I
ndia get their best chance to salvage something from the rubble in the fourth and final Test at the Adelaide Oval. The wicket is expected to be flat and dry which will help the batsmen. There is a chance that it may turn after the third day, according to the curator. India will be under a new captain, Virendra Sehwag. It is hoped that he shows the same aggression he does while batting. Of course, the big question will be whether Rohit Sharma finally gets the nod. Too much has been made of this issue already, and it has reached sickening heights. Knowing how the Indian selectors think, Sharma may well have to wait for his turn in India. This is not such a bad thing as home conditions will give him more confidence. There is also a question
mark over Gautam Gambhir who is not batting fluently. Again the selection mantra will apply. The one thing India must consider though is to play two spinners. Ravichnadran Ashwin also gives a bit of backbone to the tail and has been among the runs. Though the pacemen have bowled well, they have missed the trick at crucial moments. It will be a good idea if they watch a video of the Australian bowlers and see how they maintain their line and length particularly at the start of an innings. If India do play two spinners, then Ishant Sharma will most likely miss out. Ishant has bowled well but has not been consistent enough. Plus the wicket column has always remained scarce. Australia have already indicated that Nathan Lyon will play. Mitchell Starc will be the man to miss out, as Ryan Harris did enough to prove his place in the side. It would be better if India bat second in this Test. The opening session of any Test in Australia affords lot of pace and movement and India’s batsmen have been
found wanting. The threat of batting last in Adelaide won’t be so bad as India’s batsmen are well equipped to play spin. They have played Lyon well in this series. The focus will be once again on the batting. It has been totally hopeless so far and it will need a lot of determination to break out of the rut. Since the Test has no significant value other than statistical, there is a chance that India may well collapse again. Pride does not seem to be there. If there was pride, we would have seen some sort of a fight in the earlier Tests. The Indian team have cut a sorry figure while batting or in the field. The body language has been that of a team which have given up when the going gets tough. If the Indians cast their mind back to the same period a year ago, they were the No 1 team in the world. So the time has come to turn on the agro and give the millions of Indians something to cheer for. This team owe the fans at least that much.
Lanka win a humdinger in Jo’berg David Legge
JOHANNESBURG: Sachithra Senanayake struck a six off the penultimate ball to give Sri Lanka a two-wicket triumph over South Africa on Sunday in the final match of a five one-day international series won 3-2 by the hosts. Captain AB de Villiers and predecessor Graeme Smith (125 each) hit tons as South Africa made 312-4, but a century from Kumar Sangakkara (102) led the tourists to 314-8 at the Wanderers and a second success within three days. Sri Lanka appeared to be cruising until Sangakkara became the fourth wicket to fall with 275 runs on the board 44.2 overs into the match and a late South Africa rally brought two wickets within three balls during the final over. It left the tourists needing five runs from two balls for victory and tailender Senanayake hit Robin Peterson for a six to snatch success in a thrilling climax to a twomonth tour. “We came back strongly at the end of our tour and needed to prove a point after being bowled out for
43 in the first ODI,” said Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan. “Chasing 313 runs for victory meant it was always going to be tight and I am so proud of my team. We had a fantastic time in South Africa and it was just a pity that we lost the Test and one-day series narrowly.” Man-of-the-series De Villiers said: “We have a lot to work on before touring New Zealand next
month, but I am very happy with the way the team fought to the end.” Sangakkara struck 10 fours in a maiden ODI ton against South Africa and there were also valuable contributions from Lahiru Thirimanne (69), Upul Tharanga (46) and Dilshan (41). De Villiers and Smith excelled as South Africa recovered from a sluggish early run rate having being sent in to bat in a match delayed by a mid-afternoon thunderstorm.

Whiff of mutiny in Arsenal camp Steve Griffiths
LONDON: Arsene Wenger was forced to quell talk of a mutiny at Arsenal after his costly mistake led to the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat against Manchester United. The Frenchman made a huge blunder when he decided to send on Russia winger Andrey Arshavin in place of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the closing stages at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. A lacklustre first-half performance from Arsenal ended with Antonio Valencia heading United into the lead, but Wenger’s injury-hit side gave a far better account of themselves in the second period and equalised when Robin van Persie finished off a move that swept the full length of the pitch. Arsenal looked capable of snatching a winner at that point but Wenger took the wind out of his team’s sails by replacing OxladeChamberlain, who had marked a dynamic first Premier League start by setting up van Persie’s goal, with Arshavin. The Russian has infuriated Arsenal fans with his lacklustre displays over the last 18 months and the home supporters responded to the switch with a torrent of abuse for Wenger. Even Gunners captain van Persie was seen shouting ‘No’ while gesturing towards his manager as Arshavin came on.
Arshavin then showed Wenger exactly why there was such an angry reaction as his sloppy defending allowed Valencia space to set up Danny Welbeck’s 81st minute winner. This may not have been as humiliating as Arsenal’s 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford in August, but the consequences for Wenger could be even more damaging if he is unable to stamp out such open signs of dissent from players and fans alike. “I can understand that the fans are upset about the substitution, especially when it doesn’t work, but he (Oxlade-Chamberlain) had started to fatigue,” Wenger said. “He was sick in the week and Arshavin is captain of the Russia national team. “You have an 18-year-old kid making his first Premier League start and a player who’s captain of his country and they are querying the substitution? Let’s be serious. “I’ve been a manager for 30 years and have made 50,000 substitutions. I do not have to justify every decision I make to you (the press). I stand up for it. “People pay for their tickets and express their emotions. We have to deal with that, it doesn’t mean they are always right.” Van Persie’s frustration should be even more concerning for Wenger.
Mourinho remains unfazed
MADRID: Jose Mourinho shrugged off the whistles of the Real Madrid crowd on Sunday after reports emerged he was facing a player revolt. Sports daily Marca had claimed the combustible Portuguese coach had accused some of his stars of betrayal by conducting a whispering campaign in the press in the aftermath of the midweek
King’s Cup defeat to bitter rivals Barcelona. “You killed me in the mixed zone,” Mourinho was reported to have said to his players, referring to the bustling area where media get the opportunity to talk to players after matches. “Obviously, as you Spanish are the world champions, your friends in the press will protect you.” Despite Real’s 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, which preserved their five-point lead over Barcelona in the La Liga title race, Mourinho was still jeered by sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd. “This isn’t a problem for me, it didn’t happen when I was at Porto, Chelsea or Inter (Milan) but there is always a first time,” said Mourinho. “Is it difficult? We played and we won. Here they have whistled at Zidane, Ronaldo and Cristiano (Ronaldo), who has the Golden Boot, so why can’t they whistle at me?”
Harry launches broadside against Super Mario Ian Whittell
Tottenham MANCHESTER: boss Harry Redknapp launched a blistering attack on Mario Balotelli after the controversial Italian appeared to stamp on Spurs midfielder Scott Parker during Manchester City’s 3-2 victory here Sunday. The Italian, a second half substitute, had already been booked for a foul on Benoit Assou-Ekotto when he tangled with Parker in the 84th minute. Balotelli twice caught the prone Parker, the second time square in the head as he seemed to lose his balance and fall over. The officials gave Balotelli the benefit of the doubt and accepted his claim that it was an accidental coming together but, after the Italian settled the game by winning, then converting, a 94th minute penalty kick, Redknapp was less generous. “Yes, I do think that,” said Redknapp when asked if Balotelli should have been sent off. “It’s not the first time he’s done that is it? I’m sure it won’t be the last. “I’m the last person to talk about getting people sent off, but it’s blatantly obvious if you see that, he reacts like that at times to challenges. “Scott has a lovely cut on his head. I’m not sure if he’s had stitches, but that’s how it goes

sometimes. I’m surprised the linesman hasn’t seen it. The first (stamp) could be an accident, but the second one? He’s back-heeled him straight in the head. “I don’t like talking about people kicking players in the head, but when you see that, it’s wrong. Whether he gets sent off or whatever, it’s wrong and I don’t like seeing people react like that to a challenge. Scott made a good block.” Balotelli has never strayed far from controversy in his time with the Premier League leaders and has a cult following among City supporters.
