This season we had 88 suspected cases, of which 24 have registered as positive cases in Hyderabad,” says Dr G Srinivasulu, director of medical and health officer (DMHO).

engue fever spreads by a virus which enters the human body when the infected Aedes mosquito bites. The main reason for the spread of the disease and its carrier is due to stagnating water and unhygienic surroundings. The GHMC has being taking special fogging operations at various parts in the city which medical fraternity dubs as only of cosmetic value. “We are now conducting anti-roll operation and camps at various parts of the City for screening. Special fogging is taking place in all parts of the city especially in schools and hostels,” claims Ashok Kumar, joint commissioner, health and sanitisation. But the real solution lies not in fogging but in cleanliness and banishing cesspools, medical circles say.

Teenage girl commits suicide

FROM PG 1 On the contrary the director of medical and health officer (DMHO) says that the mosquito which spreads dengue is in the air only in the mornings and fogging is done by GHMC in the evening. So practically the extensive fogging that they are doing is of no use. “Since October testing samples have been increasing. This month there has been a 40 per cent increase in the number of

earing poor results in her unit tests, a 15-year-old girl reportedly committed suicide by immolating herself on the terrace of her residence in Nehru Nagar under Saroornagar police station limits here late last night. The girl, A Mamata, daughter of a lorry driver, Krishna, was in the class X of a private public school in the vicinity. According to the police, Mamata after dinner on Tuesday, went to her room under the pretext of studying. Around 10 pm she went to the terrace and torched herself. Hearing her cries her family rushed to rescue her but in vain. “Mamata anticipating poor results and fearing that her parents would scold her, resorted to the extreme step,” said inspector K Purnachandar Rao. Cyberabad police registered a case under Section 174.

registered samples for dengue and malaria. Around two to three test positive every day,” says an official from Secunderabad diagnostic center. It’s usually in the monsoons the Dengue is on the rise, but this year it is different, pointing to growing pollution. In comparison to last year government hospitals like Fever, Osmania and Gandhi hospitals have recorded a 40 per cent increase

in dengue victims. “Last two months have seen the highest number of Dengue cases. And, the last two weeks have been very bad. There are no vaccines available for dengue in India. Hence one needs to take precautionary measures. We have been getting 30 to 40 fever cases each day out of which minimum 10 to 15 are dengue fever cases,” says Dr Balaji, Fever hospital. As there are no vaccines one has to take care, use mosquito repellants and keep their surrounding clean. Ensuring that there is no stagnant water in the vicinity and taking care of themselves are some of the things people can do. “These are simple measures that people can use to prevent the Aedes mosquito from breeding. One needs to become aware of the symptoms and get tested soon to avoid complications,” says Dr Kumta a general physician.

HYDERABAD: Adrenaline gushed among the denizens of the 400-year-old city when business tycoons hailing from here bade the Hyderabad and Delhi IPL teams - Deccan Chargers and Delhi Daredevils. Yeah! With their businesses – newspaper and the first ever green field international airport respectively – too, they put Hyderabad in the big league. Nagarajuna Akkineni, a savant businessman and the macho man of the silver screen who still rules the hearts of his fans, joined the big league by becoming the Hyderabad owner of the i1 Super Series. Hyderabad is the fourth city to announce its franchise for the all new motorsport league, the i1 Super Series, with Tollywood superstar Nagarjuna and his associates being confirmed as the owner of the city team. Earlier franchise owners include Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan for Mumbai, hotelier Arjun Baljee for Ban-

galore and management guru Arindam Choudhury for Delhi. The highly anticipated i1 Super Series, charted on the popular city based franchisee format, will have nine teams representing nine different cities from across the country with each team having a driver of Indian origin and an international driver per car, marking a new dimension to Indian motorsports. Anjana Reddy, director, Machdar Motorsports, said, “I am very pleased to announce that we have finalised on our team owners for Hyderabad for the upcoming i1 Super Series to take place in January, 2012. It is a huge boost to us to have a star like Nagarjuna to be part owner of the Hyderabad franchisee. He has been the face of Tollywood and is an excellent addition for the i1 Super Series.” Nagarjuna said, “I am eagerly looking forward to the i1 Super Series, India’s first major motor sport league and am happy to be associated with it and to lend my support to Anjana and her team.

I am confident this league promoted by Machdar Sports will prove to be the platform to showcase India as a powerful entity in the world of motorsports and entertain the young new generation of India.

COVER STORY

How much each team owner shells out? n Year 1 - $ 2.5 million n Year 2 - $ 2.5 million n Year 3- $ 2.0 million n Year 4 to 13 - $ 1 million n Total -n $ 20 million The i1 Super Series is the all new motorsport racing league promoted by Machdar Motorsport. The i1 Super Series will consist of 12 races with nine teams representing different Indian cities. The inaugural i1 Super Series season will begin in January 2012 and be held in India, UAE, Malaysia, Bahrain and Qatar. The teams will race the Radical Sports cars’ SR3 roadster in thesports

car racing series. Each team will be represented by two drivers of which at least one must be of Indian origin. Teams will compete for a $ 2 million prize. Each team owner will have to put up an initial investment of $ 2.5 million with an additional investment of an equal amount in the second year, followed by $ 2 million in the third year and $ 1 million each for the next 13 years. Teams who do not overshoot this budget are expected to break even in the fourth year. That means the nine team owners put together will be investing a total of $ 63 million (Rs 315 crore at Rs 50 a dollar) in the first three years. If revenues are split in the ratio 60:40 amongst the team owners and Machdar respectively, the i1 super-series will need an average of Rs 200 crore every year in revenues to recover its investments after three years. On paper, the roadmap seems well planned. But when the race begins, it could be a different match altogether.

ISB weathered all storms

T

he atrium amidst the dome in the Indian School of Business, perched on a mound amid lush green carpet, adds the muchneeded glitter to India’s premier B-school. Sharing the neighbourhood with Microsoft and Infosys, the ISB is proudly gearing up for its decennial celebrations. GMAC membership is a recognition to the institution and India, says a humble Ajit Rangnekar, Dean, in an exclusive interview to A. Saye Sekhar of Postnoon.

ISB completed 10 years in existence. How has the journey been? And, looking forward, where do you position your institution? The journey has been in two parts. The first five years was of struggle. We were new. You will sympathise. People thought of us as ‘hmmm…one more business school?’ We went through the difficulties. In our first year, 9/11 also happened. We had to convince the students that they were actually getting value for their money. We had to convince the industry on the difference between a student passing out of a B-school and our student who would join the course with five years of experience in the field. We had to explain to media what we were doing. We also passed through the typical struggle of any start-up institution. From 2006, people began to take us seriously.

4,000 executive education participants and 3,500 PGP students passed out so far Visits by our Prime Minister, US President George Bush, and President Kalam, great placement successes, and recognition of Financial Times of London have all followed. Even the research done by our faculty got international acclaim. In the GMAT choices until two years ago, the largest number of Indian students applied for Harvard. For the two years, ISB is their first choice. Even the world outside is recognising us. It is interesting. We really started making impact and working our way to produce the best quality. How was the business trip to the United States of America? What are the material gains for

the ISB after your visit? Have you signed any deals in terms of new courses or support (financial and academic)? We are working for securing accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the top accreditation body in the world. They are also keen to understand our institution. We want to be accredited by the best institution in the world. That is why I visited the USA. No deals were signed. You have been avowedly discouraging the rat race among institutions when it comes to placements. In fact, you have always favoured encouraging entrepreneurship. In the last 10 years, how many of your alumni might have trodden the entrepreneurial path? Is there anyone who has touched Rs. 50 crore or more? If so, can you name them and their business activity? If you see in the last two years, a large number of institutions have dramatically reduced publication of the details of the placement of their students. You can see that IIM-A,B and C too have done away with publicity of this information. All of us have realised that immediate placements after graduation are a pretty meaningless number. What you should look at is the careers in long term. What are their interests? And, what kind of careers they want to build? We were falling into the trap of wrong measure. To the second part of your question, I am glad that many of our students have trodden the entrepreneurial path. There are more than 160 of our alumni who became entrepreneurs. It is difficult to ask someone what their turnover is, unless they announce it for strategic reasons. There must be at least five to 10 businesses in the range of Rs. 50 crore. I do recall at least two names, but I don’t have their permission to disclose them.

You talked about a strategy being evolved by the ISB to make the courses more socially relevant, instead of confining itself to produce students who benefit the industry alone. Can please elaborate the plans of ISB on this front? We are trying to improve the quality of curriculum. We also have our own social responsibilities. One of them is that if we are good we must help other

schools. We also wanted to do courses for faculty of other institutions on how to teach. We are a member of International Schools of Business Management (ISBM), a body of top international business schools which are trying to improve the quality of education. We have a large number of recruiters.

ISB was created due to the enormous academic contribution from Wharton and Kellogg’s short-term courses in public policy and administration.

10 years of ISB

number of people in a very short span. I believe each one of them is doing well somewhere in the globe. The academic research which our faculty does is of international quality. ISB has done far more than anybody in the world. Yes, more than anybody in the last one decade. How do you feel as the first ever B-school head from India to be on the board of GMAC? The truth is that it is not my recognition. It is a recognition to ISB and India by International organisations all over. The GMAC wants to make a position in India. They want people from India to be with them. It is a recognition for India as a major global player in management education. As an institution, you partner Song Advisors, a venture capital fund. Do you have any more such firms or institutions of any other genres in the pipeline? I am sure, we will. One thing is that we are into making an impact and doing more things. We will be open to looking into the partnerships. ISB was created due to the enormous academic contribution from Wharton and Kellogg’s. ISB has always believed in partnerships and associations. We will continue to look for them in every area.

Interview with Dean Ajit Rangnekar In a country like India, we have to look at the middleclass and emerging middleclass. In other words, we have to look at the inclusive aspects of growth. How do we do that? How do we include the issues of inclusiveness in our work? How do we strengthen sectors which are nationally relevant?

The whole idea of our Mohali campus is to have socially relevant courses The whole idea of our Mohali campus is to have socially relevant courses. There are four areas which are nationally relevant. They need not be regular PGP (post-graduate programme) courses. The new campus will have 210 students in the first batch for Class 2013 next year. Initially, we will have three sections of 70 students each in manufacturing. We will also have

We develop small women entrepreneurs by imparting training to them on running a crèche, to fashion designing, to biotechnology companies, retail store, to engineering company with the help of Goldman Sachs. How do they become. Students are very strong in analytical and integrated thinking. They know how to work in teams and have good interpersonal skills. The third thing that they are supposed to be is being good at communicating. Fourth is what does global approach mean to them? There is a global opportunity and impact. The last one is how do we improve ethical responsibility. All these things are to be integrated into the curriculum. Please throw light on the ISB’s contribution on building India’s intellectual capital. As many as 14,000 executive education participants and 3,500 PGP students passed out. We have contributed a large

What is your take on the views expressed by Savita Mahajan (Head, ISB’s Mohali Campus) and others on the arrest of Rajat Gupta, who had to step down as Chairman of Boatrd of Governors on being charged with insider trading in US? That was a very sensible and balanced view expressed by them. I respect individuals who believe in decency. As a school, we have no connection with them anymore. Former Dean Mendu Rammohan Rao, former Satyam Chairman B Ramalinga Raju, another board member Anil Kumar have all come under cloud at one point in time or the other. What is your take on that? Each one is a different case. It is unfair to group all of them. What people do outside of ISB, we have no control on. They are not ISB. People will do what they will do. That is for them. All of them have been very good contributors to the ISB and its growth. And, we are grateful to them.

Whiteboard replaces blackboard e-tuitions are catching up with city students, and the recent monthlong general strike gave it a fillip. Postnoon presents the face of the new byte-teacher Postnoon News

W

hen the debilitating Telangana general strike (Sakala Janula Samme) was on, some priviliged students did not suffer. Those who had tamed the internet usage made up for lost time with e-tuitions. In fact, the Samme unwittingly helped the e-tuitions as

the teacher and the taught need not sit in a class room. The tutor may be sitting in one hemisphere of the globe, while the student on the other. And, more importantly, in this form of education there is no threat of teacher-terror or third-degree method. “I am working with a software company and this is a part time job for me. More than a medium to earn money it’s a stressbuster for me. This academic year there were more students from Hyderabad. The disruption of classes had helped the increase,” says Sagar Ingalwar, an e-tutor. E-tuitions work along the lines of a regular tuition class sans the black board. It’s a one-onone interactive session in which the student and the teacher use the white board, instant messaging, and voice calls. A common white board is shared on both the screens and a mouse pen is used to write and solve mathematical problems. Special tools like protrac-

It was in the British Council that I saw people using internet to get educated. Ever since, I develop a passion in this field,” says Radha Nithi, an English faculty for Higher Grades at e-tuitions. In terms of space and content, India is one of the largest providers of e tuitions. All students need to do is select the website and watch a demo class. Once they zeroes in on a teacher, all they need to do is to register, pay money and get started.

The fee charged by these websites depends on the class and the subject. Languages are little more expensive than maths and science. “My daughter used e-tuitions to get coached for International English Language testing System (IELTS). Sitting at home, she got her tuitions and took a lot of tests,” says Nithi, a parent. Teaching online has also become a new full time profession for many in India. “This is a full time source of income for me. I have been giving etuitions for six months. I teach maths up to class X and algebra tuitions for students of class XI and XII. I get paid on an hourly basis. I make around Rs 85 an hour for school students and for college students I get paid more,” says Sarvan Kumar Bumaduli who teaches through Tutorvista. Most students who take etuitions are those pursuing CBSE stream in schools abroad. “Most of the students who use our website are from

Singapore, Malaysia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia” says Sharmila M, managing director of etuitions. Lack of professional tutors here creates a demand for e-tuitions. The equipment used for etuitions are a personal computer with internet connection, headphone, mike and a digital pen. To communicate, the teacher uses any of the chat sites such a Skype, Yahoo chat or Gtalk. “My son Nawaz Latif is studying BE computer science in BITS-Pilani’s Dubai campus and in his first year he took etuitions. He was all alone there and being from a state syllabus he was struggling hard to cope with other students and at that stage taking e tuitions was very helpful,” says Latif a parent. E-tuitions are an easy way to make money for most. All one needs to do is to give online tests then undergo a 20day training. However, the working hours are erratic, as many students are overseas.

Six passport seva kendras in State soon

HYDERABAD: Regional Passport Officer Dr M Srikar Reddy has said that six Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) would be opened on November 25 at various places in the State. Speaking to mediapersons in his office here, Srikar said that the Centre has decided to open 77 PSKs in the country and out of them, six PSKs would be set up in the State. The objective of PSK Project was to deliver passport-related services to the citizens in a timely, transparent, more accessible, reliable manner and in a comfortable environment through a streamlined process. Out of the six PSKs allotted for the State, three will be set up in Hyderabad and one each in Tirupati, Vijayawada and Adilabad. In addition to these, a mini-Passport Seva Kendra would be opened at Karimnagar. The PSKs would be established under Public Private Partnership (PPP) and TCS is the consulting agency, he added.

Jupally firm on resignation HYDERABAD: Asserting that he has no second thoughts on his resignation to the party, minister post and MLA seat, former minister Jupally Krishna Rao has observed that the T Congress MLAs and ministers would remain in the history as Telangana betrayers as they have failed to submit their resignations to the Speaker again. Speaking to the media after meeting the Speaker Nadendla Manohar on Tuesday about his resignation, Jupally said that the Speaker would take decision on his resignation soon. Urging the ministers and MLAs of the region to tender their resignations afresh, he felt that T State would be achieved only with resignations.

‘Return Emaar lands’ HYDERABAD: CPI State Secretary Dr K Narayana here on Tuesday warned that they would resort to direct action if the State government failed to surrender the EMAAR lands to the original owners. Staging a dharna in front of the APIIC office at Basheerbagh this morning, the CPI leader demanded that the government return the 90 acres of land acquired by the government for EMAAR Properties, to the victimised farmers. Later, Narayana presented a memorandum to APIIC chairman Sivarama Subrahmanyam in this regard. He has urged the APIIC chairman to take immediate steps to render justice to the affected farmers by returning their lands in the wake of scandals and charges against the EMAAR Properties being investigated by the CBI. He also warned that if the government failed to take immediate action to render justice to the victims, the CPI activists would forcibly occupy those lands by putting up party flags.

One day, Rs1 cr gone as netas slug it out in LS NEW DELHI: The loss of four hours work in the Lok Sabha due to the bedlam over the Opposition's boycott of Union home minister P Chidambaram on the first day of Parliament's Winter Session is estimated to have caused a Rs1 crore loss to the nation. The disruption came despite an appeal from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the session's smooth running to enable important legislative business. Officials of PRS Legislative Research, a policy study group, noted that the Lok Sabha, which nornally meets for five hours day, was in session for just about half-an-hour as it had to be adjourned due to the pandemonium. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned to mourn the death of two sitting members, Ram Dayal Munda and Silvious Condapen. As the Lok Sabha was adjourned twice, once during

the Question Hour and later for the day after noon, the house lost about four hours of work. A rough estimate, based on the budgetary allocation for parliament's functioning, puts the cost of an hour's work of parliament at Rs.25 lakh. Considering this, the exchequer lost about Rs1 crore. The Opposition in the Lok Sabha created a din during

JAMMU: Activists of a Kashmiri Pandit organisation Tuesday filed a public interest litigation, seeking action against writer-cum-activist Arundhati Roy over her reported remarks in New York on self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The PIL, filed in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court here, said that the remarks were "untenable" because they were "anti-national". Filed by Routes, an organisation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, the PIL demanded that Roy should be restrained from making offensive remarks against India in reference to Jammu and Kashmir within and outside of the country. The PIL filed by Routes' members, Veer Saraf, Ajay Bhat and Vijay Kashkari, also sought impounding of her passport. Speaking in New York recently, Roy had reportedly demanded an "end to the brutal occupation of Kashmir" by India and also said that its people must be given the "right to self determination".

A Team woos saffron camp to garner support for Lokpal Bill NEW DELHI: Top members of Team Anna on Tuesday met leaders Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj in Parliament House to press for passing of the Lokpal bill in the Winter Session of Parliament. "We are meeting all the members of the standing committee one by one and today we met Arun Jaitley," Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal told reporters outside Parliament. They also Sushma Swaraj, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and other BJP leaders, including SS Ahluwalia. The standing committee examining the bill is expected to present its report by December 7. "One of the issues that is emerging is of Group C and D officers being kept out of the Lokpal. We asked them that if you keep 57 lakh government employees out of this, thus giving them the independence to indulge in corruption, then the common man who is not get-

Manmohan Singh, ahead of Parliament's sitting, expressed the hope that all political parties 'realise that we have important legislations to discuss in the Winter Session' and that the sesIANS sion runs smoothly.

ting ration, where would he complain," he asked. There have been reports that the standing committee has suggested inclusion of Group B central government employees under the ambit of the Lokpal, but excluding Group C and D. Group A has been included right from the start under the bill's jurisdiction. Reports have also suggested that the judiciary, the CBI and the Citizen's Charter have also been kept out of the Lokpal's ambit. "If you don't bring CBI under its (Lokpal) ambit then the Lokpal would be reduced to a post office. If the duty of Lokpal is limited to forwarding investigation reports from the CBI to the courts, then we don't need it," Kejriwal said. On the Citizen's Charter, he said it was a "promise made by the Parliament to the people of India that lower bureaucracy and citizen's charter would be brought under this bill and we called for its implementation."

Court asks police to probe complaint against Bhushan INDORE: A local court has directed the police to look into a complaint seeking filing of a case on the charge of treason against Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan for allegedly suggesting a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir. Shailendra Dwivedi, a lawyer for local Congress leader Ashok Jaiswal, who had approached the court said that First Class Judicial Magistrate OP Bohra had ordered the police to look into the complaint and give its report to the court. India ‘shuts up’ China at UN poll

UNITED NATIONS: India on Tuesday won an election to UN’s only external oversight body, the Joint Inspection Unit, which takes care of the administrative and financial functioning of the world body system. Ambassador A Gopinath won 106 votes against China’s 77. China’s Zhang Yishan was already a member of the JIU and was seeking renewal of his term. Yan was recently embroiled in a controversy when he told an

Indian journalist in New Delhi to “shut up” after the scribe asked the ambassador to comment on a map of India, distributed by a state-owned Chinese firm, that did not show some parts of Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh in the Indian territory. While India won by a comfortable margin, officials at the Indian mission said China had been using its “margin of persuasion” as well as its “fairly strong electoral machine” to garner

votes in its favour. India on its part too used a “counter-margin of persuasion,” the official added. The UN General Assembly held elections to fill the vacancies that arose upon the expiry of the term of offices of the representatives of Egypt, Russia, Peru, Cuba, China and the US. Gopinath will serve for a period of five years beginning Januray 1, 2013. The Joint Inspection Unit is a

United Nations unit established by resolution 31/192 of December 22, 1976 of the General Assembly of the United Nations. Its objective is to enhance the efficiency of the administrative and financial functioning of the United Nations system and, to this end, it may make on-the-spot inquiries and investigations. The JIU is the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system man-

dated to conduct evaluations, inspections and investigations system-wide. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland. UN envoy Puri said winning the election “is of very high importance as JIU is an important body. But the fact that we can contest an election of this kind and win will hopefully provide assurance to my friends and colleagues at headquarters that we need not be so risk averse.” PTI

Fewer foreigners adopt in India — it’s still good news! Azera Rahman

NEW DELHI: Over the past few years, fewer foreign nationals have been adopting Indian children — and no, it’s not a negative trend. According to the Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA), the Central adoption agency, the reason behind the trend is that more Indians are going for adoption. For the simple but important reason that a child should preferably grow up in an environment that is close to his or her roots and imbibe that culture, CARA has been encouraging in-country adoption over inter-country for a few years now. “There is a steady fall in inter-country adoption and a rise in in-country adoption over the past few years. The main reason is that we encourage the latter and give preference to an Indian or an Indian couple looking to adopt a child over someone else,” Anu J Singh, member secretary of CARA, said. In 2008, for instance, the total inter-country adoptions were 821. In 2009, it fell to 666 and further to 593 in 2010. “This year, until June 30, the total number of inter-country adoptions were 259,” Singh said. In comparison, the number of adoptions within the country have been on the rise. In 2008, the number of in-country adoptions were 2,169. In 2009, it was 1,852 and in 2010 it was 5,693. And this year, until June 30, the

number of in-country adoptions was 3,621. The statistics also show an overall rise in adoptions. “There is a conscious effort to encourage Indian couples to go for adoption. We feel that a child should be as close to his or her roots as possible. This is why we also give preference to nonresident Indians,” Singh said. There is also a general resentment about putting up children to foreign nationals for adoption, she added. “Often, people come to me and say that we should not put up our kids for adoption to foreigners, should not send them away from their place of birth. But then I tell them that although we too would prefer a situation like that, we get a lot of foreigners keen on adopting and it’s better that a child gets a loving home than wait endlessly for one,” Singh said. “Moreover, nearly half of the children adopted by foreigners are those with special needs — who are turned down by Indians. So we have to keep the best interest of the child in mind over everything else,” she added. A lot of children adopted by foreign nationals are also those with siblings who are taken together, who may have suffered from some disease like tuberculosis because sometimes they come from extremely impoverished backgrounds or are older than two years of age or even more —all of which are reasons for most Indian couples to overIANS look a child.

Memogate claims first casualty, Pak envoy quits ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s US envoy has been forced to step down as the government launches an investigation into claims that he sought US help, allegedly at the president’s behest, to forestall a feared military coup. Ambassador Husain Haqqani, a close aide of President Asif Ali Zardari, has played a key role in helping Pakistan’s government navigate turbulent relations with Washington which nosedived over the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Haqqani has denied any wrongdoing over what the Pakistani media has dubbed “memogate”. But he had offered nevertheless to step down, and late Tuesday Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani formally ordered his resignation. “The prime minister asked Pakistan ambassador to the US Mr Husain Haqqani to submit his resignation,” Gilani’s spokesman said in a statement, adding that the government had ordered a “detailed investigation” into the issue. Media reports have implicated Haqqani in a memo allegedly sent from Zardari to Admiral Mike Mullen, then America’s top military officer, seeking to curtail Pakistan’s military shortly after it was humiliated by the bin Laden killing. S Korea marks attack anniversary SEOUL: South Korea on Wednesday marked the first anniversary of a deadly North Korean bombardment with ceremonies and a military drill, as an unrepentant Pyongyang accused Seoul of provoking the attack. Hundreds of people gathered at the national cemetery in the central city of Daejeon to commemorate two Marines killed when the North shelled Yeonpyeong island, near the tense Yellow Sea border, on November 23 last year. The first attack on a civilian-populated area since the 1950-53 war also left two civilians dead and destroyed or damaged scores of homes and other buildings. The North launched 170 shells or rockets at the island, sparking outrage in the South and international alarm. “How could we ever forget this day?” Prime Minister Kim Hwang-Sik said in a speech at the Daejeon event, attended by military commanders, politicians, Marines and families of the dead. Tearful family members laid chrysanthemums in front of giant photos of the two. “The sacrifice for the nation will never be forgotten,” read a large sign. “It was a day of atrocity, for the first time since the Korean War,” said Kim, vowing to “make no compromise” on further provocations.

Aussies wake up late, ban sex slavery Australia on SYDNEY: Wednesday announced plans to make forced marriage and “slavery-like” practices prevalent in the sex industry illegal. Minister for the Status of Women Kate Ellis said the draft legislation was part of the country’s response to combat people-trafficking and modern slavery. “Every person has a right to choose whether to marry and who to marry,” she said. “These offences will reinforce that a marriage must be entered into with the full and free consent of both parties, and that forcing someone into mar-

riage is an abuse of human rights.” Because there is no specific law against forced marriages that can be used to prosecute offenders in court, it is hard to gauge the extent of the practice in Australia, the government said. But it was brought into the spotlight in September when it emerged that a 16-year-old girl had been placed on an airport watch-list after going to court to prevent her parents sending her to Lebanon for an arranged marriage. The Federal Magistrates Court ruled that the parents of

the teenager could not remove or attempt to remove their daughter from the country to marry the young man she had met only once. In his judgement, Magistrate Joe Harman ordered the parents not to assault, threaten or intimidate the girl, saying the type of complaint she lodged was becoming increasingly common. Home Affairs and Justice Minister Brendan O’Connor said the draft legislation was also targeted at people being trafficked into Australia to work, particularly in the sex industry. “Information provided by

law enforcement agencies shows that increasing numbers of people are being trafficked into a variety of industries, not just the sex industry,” he said. “It is vital that Australia has the most robust and effective framework possible to respond to slavery and people-trafficking, and I am confident that this proposed legislation will achieve that.” Under the proposed legislation, new offences of forced marriage and forced labour will be created, as well as laws to prosecute anyone who harbours or receives a victim of AFP trafficking or slavery.

Mexico army seizes $15million drug cash

MEXICO CITY: Mexico’s army seized nearly $15.4 million from the organisation of the country’s most powerful drug lord, Joaquin “Shorty” Guzman, officials said on Tuesday, marking a rare financial blow to cartels. The seizure was revealed the same day the US border police revealed the third discovery in a week of drugsmuggling tunnel under the border with Mexico. In Mexico, the military said it found the cash was found in a vehicle on November 18 in the northern border city of Tijuana and that it was linked to Guzman’s operations. The haul marked the second-largest cash seizure by the military since President Felipe Calderon sent the country’s armed forces out to battle drug cartels in 2006, the statement said. Some $26 million was captured in September 2008 in Culiacan, the capital of Guzman’s home state of Sinaloa. About 45,000 people have died in the conflict in the last

Kayani refused to confiscate Lakhvi’s phone in jail: Report WASHINGTON: Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani refused an American request to confiscate the cell phone of jailed LeT commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi being used to direct group’s operation from the Rawalpindi jail, reflecting connection between the country’s military and the terrorist outfit. “Kayani rejected a US request that authorities take away the cell phone Lakhvi was using in jail, according to the memo to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the National Security Council,” said the investigative news report which was telecast by PBS’s Frontline and posted on the website of ProPublica on Tuesday. As a result of this Lakhvi continues to direct the LeT operations unhindered.

five years and the government has captured or killed dozens of top level drug smugglers. But critics complain the government has barely dented cartel finances. Total seizures add up to only a tiny fraction of the $18 billion to $39 billion in estimated annual revenue generated by Mexican and Colombian drug traffickers. Mexico’s biggest cash seizure to date was made by the attorney general’s office when officials found more than $200 million stuffed in the walls of a Mexico City mansion in 2007, which at the time

was the world’s biggest ever seizure of drug money. Guzman, Mexico’s most wanted man, runs an empire of methamphetamine, marijuana and cocaine smuggling that has earned him a spot on Forbes magazine’s list of billionaires. In Nogales, Arizona, the US Border Patrol said a 319-foot long tunnel was discovered on Monday. It measured 3-feet wide by 2-feet tall, and ran for 100 feet into Mexico at a depth of about 20 feet. It was chiseled through solid rock and was equipped

with electricity, lighting and water pumps, and it was held up by support beams and plywood shoring, the Border Patrol’s Tucson sector said in a news release. While securing the tunnel, agents also found 26 bundles of marijuana weighing more than 430 pounds. One suspect was arrested by authorities in Mexico, Border Patrol agent Colleen Agle said. The tunnel was the third discovered running under the porous U.S.-Mexico border in less than a week. Last Wednesday Authorities in California announced the find of an underground passageway that stretched 400 yards to an industrial park south of San Diego from Tijuana, Mexico. They seized more than 17 tons of marijuana and arrested two men. The same day, authorities in Nogales found another smaller passageway beneath the porch of a house that ran 70 feet from a drain in Nogales in Mexico.

Taiwanese worker lifts 230 kg with ‘iron crotch’ TAIPEI: An ailing Taiwanese worker has reportedly regained his health by practising “iron crotch”, in which men use their genitals to lift iron disks weighing hundreds of kilograms. Yang You-sin has been doing heavy manual labour since he was young. Ten years ago, his limbs started to swell and become sore after work. He was not able to find any medicine that could relieve his pain. He soon started practising the iron crotch, also known as 99 Power Qigong, after he learnt from its founder that it can improve his health. Yang said his condition improved considerably, the wantchinatimes.com reported. He uses a cloth to tie several iron disks to his genitals to warm up. When he feels prepared, he steps onto two pedestals and crouches down to tie iron weights weighing 230 kg to his penis. He then stands up slowly, lifting the iron disks off the ground for 30 seconds. Rupee gains 32 paise against US dollar MUMBAI: The Indian rupee gained 32 paise to Rs 51.92 per US dollar in morning trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, tracking gains registered by other Asian peers against the American currency. Dealers said euro losses against other Asian currencies and reports of RBI intervention in the

forex market to check the steep fall in Indian rupee mainly kept the sentiment firm. The rupee had lost 15 paise to close at Rs 52.29/30 against the dollar in the previous session on strong demand for the American currency from importers despite modest gains in the stock markets following an eight-session losing streak.

A critical look at games and players

Federer hammers Nadal to book SF spot

Roger Federer produced a stunning display of tennis to thrash his great rival Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-0 and book his place in the semi-finals at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London

A

packed O2 Arena brimmed with excitement as arguably the best two players of all time took to the court for their 26th clash in a repeat of last year’s final. Federer had won only seven of their previous meetings but he was simply on another level as he wrapped up victory in 61 minutes, winning 10 of the last 11 games. Federer began with a doublefault but he crunched a forehand winner on the next point to get on the board, and in a quite breathtaking sixth game he broke through.

A forehand creamed down the line gave him 0-30, and the Swiss star’s aggressive approach then earned him three break points when Nadal offered up an easy smash. The clinching point summed up what makes the pair so special, the momentum swinging this way and that in a pulsating rally before Nadal drove a backhand just wide. The crowd, who were split fairly evenly, roared their appreciation, and the Swiss flags were waving again shortly afterwards when another Federer forehand winner gave him the first set.

Nadal was made to pay again in the opening game of the second set as the world number four drilled another sublime forehand winner down the line to secure a second break of serve. He simply could not cope with the speed of the 30-year-old’s game and Federer made it four games in a row with another break. Nadal was battling simply to get on the board in the second set but he could not manage it and Federer wrapped up his first love set against the Spaniard for fourand-a-half years. EVENING STANDARD

Injured Murray out of ATP finals

T

he world number three picked up a groin injury in practice last week and struggled through a 6-4, 7-5 defeat by David Ferrer before revealing he was considering

12

his future in the tournament. He announced at a press conference on Tuesday that he could take no further part in the season-ending event. Murray revealed when he

suffered the injury last week he was told to take a week to 10 days off.”I just didn’t have enough time to recover,” he said. Murray is no stranger to playing through niggles and he

is renowned as someone who only pulls out of tournaments as a last resort. The last time he withdrew midway through an event was in Dubai nearly three years ago while his only retirement during a match came in Hamburg in 2007 when he snapped a tendon in his wrist. Murray compared the situation to this year’s French Open campaign, when he twisted an ankle in the third round but battled on and eventually reached the semi-finals. He said, “I was able to play a match and win a match and get through it when I did it. This time I did it one week before the tournament. I was told (to take) a week to 10 days off of total rest. I just didn’t have enough time to recover. “The Australian Open is seven weeks away. I could mess up my preparation for that, for the beginning of the year. That off-season is so important for me, and has been for the last few years for getting ES myself in shape.”

Eco-friendly uniforms at Olympics LONDON: The 2012 London Olympics organising committee has unveiled the designs of uniforms that will be worn by around 70,000 volunteers, 6,000 committee staff and 4,500 technical officials during the games. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) unveiled the designs on Tuesday. All volunteer uniforms are said to be made of recyclable material, including the bags and water bottles. The LOCOG said all uniforms have been produced in ecofriendly, responsible ways. “What we’ve come up with is a uniform which celebrates the best of Britain’s heritage in a modern and sustainable way,” said Paul Deighton, chief executive officer of LOCOG. Windies pile W up 378-3

est Indies carried on from where they had stopped at stumps on day one to score a healthy 378 for the loss of just three wickets at lunch on day two. Darren Bravo made his third century in four Tests as West Indies' young batting line-up continued to make light of the loss of their most experienced batsmen to hurt India on the second morning at the Wankhede Stadium. Ishant Sharma gave India their lone success by removing Kirk Edwards, but the new batsman Kieron Powell kept the runs coming with an array of drives down the ground.

Trio book place in last 16 Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Benfica reached the Champions League knockout stages as the qualification picture became clearer on Tuesday night

T

he Germans secured top spot in Group A with a 3-1 win over Villarreal, Inter did likewise in Group B with a draw at Trabzonspor, while Benfica's 2-2 draw with Manchester United meant they too progress to the last 16. Franck Ribery scored twice for Bayern, either side of a Mario Gomez effort, as Jonathan De Guzman netted Villarreal's consolation. Napoli jumped ahead of opponents Manchester City into second place in Group A with a 2-1 win in Naples thanks to Edinson Cavani's double. A 1-1 draw away to Trabzonspor was enough for Inter to assure themselves of the number one spot in Group B. Ricardo Alvarez gave the Nerazzuri the lead but Halil Altintop quickly equalised. Lille left the rest of the group in the balance with a vital 2-0 win away to CSKA Moscow earlier in the evening, Moussa Sow adding to Vasili Berezutsky's eye-catching own goal. The result leaves both teams level on five points, one behind Trabzonspor. Lille host the Turks in their final game, while CSKA go to Inter. Group C is more tightly poised, but United's clash with Basle in a fortnight represents a straight fight for qualification. Basle held off Otelul Galati's late fightback to win 3-2 in

Romania and move within a point of the leading pair. Already-qualified Real Madrid kept up their 100% record with a 6-2 hammering of Dinamo Zagreb to set the seal on top spot in Group D. Despite resting several key players, Real roared into a 4-0 lead inside 20 minutes and extended that advantage in the second half as Karim Benzema and Jose Callejon each netted their second of the evening. Dinamo pulled two goals back in the closing stages but it was of little consequence. Ajax are as good as certain of following Madrid after a goalless draw with Lyon left them three points ahead of their French opponents, with an identical head-to-head record and a goal difference superior by seven.

Franck Ribery

United held at home U

nited fell behind early lead on through Phil Jones' own goal but equalised on the half-hour when Dimitar Berbatov — in the team in place of Wayne Rooney, who was nursing a hip problem from the win at Swansea on Saturday — headed in Nani's centre, the first time he had netted in the competition in three years. Darren Fletcher put the hosts in

front 14 minutes after the break, only for Pablo Aimar to draw things level again seconds later, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson's men needing a point from their trip to Basle next month to make it through - with their chances of winning the group looking slim. The Portuguese visitors took a shock lead in the fourth minute when Nicolas Gaitan fired the ball

13

across the box and Jones diverted it past David de Gea into his own net. Although their attacking was still a little stop-start, the hosts began to settle down and in the 30th minute they pulled level. Nani delivered a cross from the left and it came to Berbatov, who glanced it into the far corner. Within seconds, Ashley Young almost found himself through on goal but Artur managed to save with his legs. EVENING STANDARD

Loss puts City on the brink Edinson Cavani struck twice in 2-1 win for Napoli to dash City's hopes

T

he highly-rated Uruguayan lifted the Italian side back into second in Group A with goals either side of a Mario Balotelli equaliser at the intimidating Stadio San Paolo. City had several chances in an eventful game but Marek Hamsik also hit the post for the hosts, who dominated for long spells. Napoli went close as Hamsik headed straight at Joe Hart from a Ezequiel Lavezzi cross. Encouraged, Napoli then took charge with Lavezzi shooting wide after neat interplay with Cavani on the edge of the box. Hart was then extended as Gokhan Inler forced him to palm over from long range but City were undone from the resulting 19th-minute corner. Cavani met Lavezzi's set-piece with a glancing header and the ball found a way past Hart at his near post. City pressed and levelled after 32 minutes when a poor clearance from Paolo Cannavaro went straight to David Silva, who fired straight at Morgan De Sanctis. The keeper parried but only as far as Balotelli, who gratefully tapped in from close range. What had been hard work to get back into the game was undone four minutes into the second half. The visitors were caught out down their right as Andrea Dossena managed to get behind Pablo Zabaleta and pull back for Cavani in front of goal. The Uruguayan made no mistake as he side-footed home his second.

esearchers led by Prof Sébastien Sauvé of the University of Montreal’s Department of Chemistry have discovered that traces of caffeine are a useful indicator of the contamination of our water by sewers. “E coli bacteria is commonly used to evaluate and regulate the levels of faecal pollution of our water from storm water discharge, but because storm sewers systems collect surface runoff, non-human sources can contribute significantly to the levels that are observed,” Sauvé explained. “Our study has determined that there is a strong correlation between the levels of caffeine in water and the level of

bacteria, and that chemists can therefore use caffeine levels as an indicator of pollution due to sewerage systems.” The researchers took water samples from streams, brooks and storm sewer outfall pipes that collect storm waters across the Island of Montreal, and analysed them for caffeine, faecal coliforms, and a third suspected indicator, carbamazepine. All samples contained various concentrations of these contaminants, which would suggest that contamination is widespread in urban environments. Carbamazepine is an anti-seizure drug that is also increasingly used for various psychiatric treatments.

Red lips have held great charm for women since time immemorial and it just gets stronger each passing season. Today, they remain as fashionable as ever

carlet red lips will never go out of fashion no matter what age you are in. It is one colour that suits women of all ages and all skin tones, so doesn't matter if you are dusky or fair, sporting red lips is your right. And the fact that men like women with their lips painted red is no secret at all! So if you are heading out for a dinner date with your beau we recommend that you add a dash of red to your lips which not only looks appealing but irresistible as well. There are some celebrities who have done more than justice to scarlet lips and today we present a few.

Kareena Kapoor: What can we say about Bebo? That she is at the top today we have no doubt and is laughing her way to the bank too in terms of acting but when it comes to fashion, she can give any of her contemporaries a run for their money. With a complexion as hers, a set of red lips only go to enhance her beauty and with the oh-so-stylish nawab at her toes, we want Bebo to go all out experimental with her looks.

Gwen Stefani: This singer and mother of two is perhaps one of the few women in the world who can do more than justice to the red lipstick and it is not without reason that Gwen is seldom seen sporting any other colour than red on her lips. Be it for her concerts or a red carpet appearance, Gwen always sports the red colour. The best part is that she pretty much wears it with any outfit, regardless of whether it is a gown or a pair of denims. She is definitely a sight to behold in her leopard print outfit.

Deepika Padukone:

Vidya Balan: This Indian beauty has been in the news off late for her sensuous portrayal of a Southern star in The Dirty Picture but we are sure that not many had doubts of how sensuous Vidya really is. Her first film, Parineeta, itself went onto show her real beauty and though this lady is not so great with Western wear, we are not complaining, for she manages to take your breath away in her Indian avatar. The red lips only go on to enhance her beauty.

Liv Tyler: Angelina Jolie: That she is one of the most desirable woman in the world, we have no doubt about and with her famous pout, Lara Croft has perhaps raided a lot of hearts. Fashion and style is synonymous with this famous mother of six and she is also making sure that her brood goes the same way. All aside, we must include her too in this list of stylish women with scarlet lips as she does stand out in her red carpet appearances when she has her lips painted red.

Liv as she is popularly known as, is the beautiful daughter of Steven Tyler, the front man of the band Aerosmith. Known for her beauty and charm, Liv also happens to be a style icon though generally she likes to maintain a low profile. But, her sense of style and fashion has earned her admiration from a lot of quarters and she is one of the few in the business who knows how to sport her lips red, the right way. Want to look like Liv Tyler? Red lips are the way to go.

When we decided to come up with this elite list of women in red, we did not have the leggy Miss Padukone in mind but she sure does look good with red lips. This desi girl sure does make a few heads turn with her red lips and she knows to use them well too. She has made sure not to accessorise her look much whenever she has gone for the scarlet lips and we must agree that she is one smart cookie at that.

wapna Tirunahari is the sort of woman who doesn't have to strive too hard to manage the various aspects of her life. We have always heard the phrase, 'Behind every successful man, there is a woman', but there are some men who also motivate their lady, every step of the way. “I got married very young and my husband, Hari, was always aware of my interest in painting. He encouraged and helped me to complete my studies in jewellery designing and gave me the confidence to become an entrepreneur. That's how Reva Jewels was born,” she informs. Reva Jewels is a one-stop shop house of designer jewellery which deals in gold, diamond, precious and semi-precious gems and pearls. What is unique about Reva Jewels is that it caters to the different choices of every woman. It has jewellery for the shy, traditional woman, the fashion conscious and the strong headed

career woman. “I set up Reva Jewels about seven years ago and have been designing jewellery for the past 10 years,” informs Swapna who completed her jewellery and diamond grading studies from Hyderabad. “While I was in the business, I was selected for the 10,000 Women, a certificate course for women entrepreneurs, in association with Goldman Sachs. I grabbed that opportunity and went on to add five more months to my field of expertise,” she says. Swapna was born and brought up in Hyderabad in a very stable and disciplined environment. “As a child I was very fond of the outdoors and loved spending my time in the sun. I was also very mischievous and it was my mum who always kept a stern eye on me,” she laughs, reminiscing about her childhood. What a lot of people don't know about Swapna is that she is also a classical dancer. “I have always been fond of the arts. I started learning classical dance when I was a little girl. I don't get the time anymore but

Swapna Tirunahari breathes, eats and sleeps art. Owner of Reva Jewels, she is a businesswoman with many shades I try to squeeze it in whenever I can. Dancing is my de-stress therapy. I also love to paint, cook and travel to new places,” she chortles. Even when Swapna is relaxing, she likes to unwind by putting her mind to the test. “I enjoy making new things. It's kind of exciting when a new

idea hits me, and it is fun to watch the idea change in my head as it develops. Sometimes I lie in bed thinking about a jewellery design and how I might go about creating it. Then I make it. Sometimes it turns out just the way it was in my head, sometimes it turns out better!,” she smiles.

he void left by Milind Soman and Arjun Rampal in the modelling world was filled by a worthy candidate — Sahil Shroff. Though he could not assume the supermodel status of his predecessors, nonetheless, Sahil has become a brand of his own and many of his counterparts look up to him as a style icon and more. Inform him about this perception in the industry and a down-to-earth Sahil says, “The respect given to me is a blessing, I love Arjun and to be compared to these two great models in an industry where there is so much comparison is perhaps an achievement. People come to me to talk about their career and it feels good, it's a part of my job and I enjoy everything. I enjoy meeting people, and responsibility is part of the work I do and I love it.” He goes on to add, “To be put on a pedestal like that, it makes me feel proud, I think I got lucky in a way when I got thrown into the ad world. The first two years in the industry, I did not know what I was doing. But then, a blank canvas is better than a full one and I soon understood what works for me.” But this MBA holder did not know that he will be making his way to films when he started out initially. After completing his education from Beacon University in Australia, Sahil came to visit his mother in Mumbai and decided to give modelling a shot. “My education helped me and I tell everyone to complete their education before plunging into modelling full time. My education has helped from product to personal marketing. And when you enjoy what you are doing, the benefit is quadrupled,” informs Sahil whose primary aim

I was running out of patience Model Sahil Shroff who is one of the most sought-after faces in the modelling industry today, will be making his Bollywood debut with Don 2

now, is acting. “I am sure in the future something else will come up. I don’t think about the future too much and don't plan. Right now I want to do some good work,” clarifies Sahil. Though he is now debuting in Don 2, for Sahil, it wasn't an easy task, “I did the audition for the role of Arjun in Don 2 and they liked it and asked me to come back again for another audition which I did. A couple of months later, they called me again but then Farhan was busy and my patience was wearing thin when I got called for the third audition. So three auditions later, I was on board,” explains Sahil who thinks that Don 2 is a great brand to start his career with. He had a great time working in the film though he feels that the coolest of stunts were done by Shah Rukh Khan, “My character Arjun does cool stuff in the film and I am happy to have got a chance to work with some cool actors in the film. It's an action film, so I did get to do a lot of action sequences but Shah Rukh Khan gets to do all the cool stunts,”shares Sahil with a smile. Sahil shares a great equation with director Farhan Akhtar who he thinks has a great sense of humour. “His sense of humour is quirky and as a director he is really good. He is a good actor and talented too, he knows exactly what he wants. It took me a few days to understand his way of working and I think it is his acting that makes him a good director. He defines new age cinema,” says Sahil about Farhan. Sahil is now concentrating on selling himself as a brand, “It is more interesting than selling software,” says Sahil with a smile continuing, “My education is definitely coming handy and it is definitely more satisfying creatively.” Sahil considers himself to be a thinking actor and has trained from Anupam Kher's acting school.

Ranbir-Nargis no more a couple?

I

t seems post Rockstar, Pakistani-American model Nargis Fakhri and Ranbir Kapoor are no more interested in being perceived as a couple. On Wednesday night at a party at the Grand Hyatt thrown by a leading celebrity-management company KWAN, Nargis chose to

be accompanied by a female friend, while Ranbir came with his father Rishi Kapoor. Throughout the evening Ranbir and Nargis were in separate sections of the party. “Nargis and Ranbir hardly spoke to one another. This was an important evening for Nargis, as it was her first appearance independent of the Rockstar events. And she made it clear that she was there at the party to meet the who’s who of the entertainment industry,” said a source from the party. Director Imtiaz Ali kept Nargis away from the prying eyes of shutterbugs and allowed her to interact with media only during the pre-release promotional events of Rockstar. The party was her first chance to meet more people and IANS she made the best of it.

mitabh Bachchan has thanked his extended family (EF) for finding the original morphed image of his new-born granddaughter’s picture. His daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai gave birth to her and husband Abhishek’s first child on November 16. The Bachchans shared the news on Twitter, but refused to post the baby’s picture online, saying it is a private matter. Meanwhile, someone posted a morphed picture of the baby on the net. “Ladies and gentlemen of the EF world, I present to you the picture being circulated and

Adivi Sesh, who’s playing an important role in Pawan Kalyan’s Panjaa, talks about his life and cinema

hemanth.k@postnoon.com

B

lame it on his complexion if you assume that he might be from up North or maybe even the US. We don’t see too many actors who are as fair skinned as Adivi Sesh. “What’s the big deal about it? It’s just a complexion,” Sesh dismisses the statement with a smile. It’s all the more surprising that he speaks Telugu without an accent, despite spending more than 20 years in the US. Ask him if his appearance has caught people off-guard and he recollects an incident which happened on the sets of Panjaa. “On the first day of the shoot, the spot boy began talking to me in Hindi and when I replied in Telugu, he was surprised that I was a south Indian. It’s not the first time that someone has mistaken me for a North Indian. When I was in the US, people thought I was a Mexican, Iranian and even Greek. Here, some people can’t believe that I am a Telugu boy,” he says. His grandfather Adivi Bapiraju was an acclaimed literary figure who had written novels like Himabindu and Gonaganna Reddy which have had a great influence on Telugu cinema. “Since my family was always into arts, I think the idea of working on something related to arts had been in my mind. And cinema is a medium which encompasses everything,” Sesh adds. His passion for films began at the age of eight and he made his first film at the age of 14. “My first film was titled Light Smile on the Lips (Chirunavvutho) and I had made it at a time when I didn’t even know that it’s a cinematographer’s job to shoot the film. It was a film about two Indians in the US and their search for hot chicks,” he chuckles

adding, “My brother (Sai Kiran Adivi) says that this film inspired him in a lot of ways. I still have a semester and a half to complete my graduation at the film school in San Fransisco State University.”

I have missed out on the revolution in contemporary Telugu cinema which has been happening over the last 10–15 years Having spent most part of his life in San Fransisco, he agrees that he has missed out on keeping himself abreast with what’s happening in contemporary Telugu cinema. “I have missed out on the revolution in contemporary Telugu cinema which has been happening over the last 10 to 15 years,” he admits. We wonder what sort of revolution he is referring to. “Look at the kind of films which directors like Sekhar Kammula, Krish, Indraganti Mohankrishna and Shekhar Suri have been making. And SS Rajamouli has changed the way blockbuster films are made in Telugu. I remember an incident which happened in San Jose when I was watching Magadheera. The person sitting next to me was at the edge of the seat throughout the film and it was amazing to see how deeply he was involved in the film. It’s really nice to interact with all these people and understand more about cinema,” Sesh says. He moved back to Hyderabad couple of years ago to work on his directorial debut, Karma. Although the film didn’t do well at the boxoffice, he’s happy that his work has been recognised. So did he notice anything in particular about how people here react to cinema as compared to the audiences in the West? “These two years in Hyderabad have really helped me to shape my sensibilities regarding Telugu cinema. I have observed that people here are very impatient when it comes to movies. They want everything to be crisper and faster. Maybe in future, I’ll try and bring in my American sensibilities in terms of technique and style while keeping the soul of the film Indian,” he offers. Come this December, we will see a brand new side of

Sesh, who playing an important role in Pawan Kalyan’s upcoming film Panjaa. “I play a character named Munna and it has a lot of negative shades,” he reveals with a slight hesitation. Everything about the film is being kept under wraps for the time being, but Sesh does confess that working in Panjaa was a great experience indeed. “Vishnu Vardhan is a fabulous director and he has a lot of clarity about every aspect of cinema. Believe me, he’s a great actor. On the sets he would show each one of us what to do for every scene and it was a pleasant surprise to see him supervising the dubbing part of each and every character in the film,” he reveals. Ask him about the experience of working with Pawan Kalyan, he replies, “He’s so down-to-earth. One day I was sitting all alone in a corner and he came to talk to me. We had a lengthy conversation and it didn’t strike me till I went back to the sets that I was talking to Pawan Kalyan, the Powerstar. I am sure this film is going to stun everyone.”

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
