GO, SPEED RACER, GO!

Co-owners of Mahi Racing Team India, Akkineni Nagarjuna and Nandish Domlur, speak to Postnoon on a project that’s both their passion and life force — motoracing! NAG: Not really. There is already so much excitement and interest on the circuit about the new Indian team. So they were fascinated by the idea. The fact that we had Andrew Stone and the team, the Kawaski bike helped seal the deal.

PADMINI C padmini.c@postnoon.com How did the whole project come about? NAG: Racing has been a passion ever since I can remember. I’d follow the motoraces on TV and also go to watch them live in Europe and around the world every chance I got. The atmosphere at these races, with the fans and the excitement, would always be so electric and I’d come back wondering why we didn’t have anything like that in India. So when Nandish pitched the idea of bringing motoracing to India, it seemed like a great opportunity. I felt it was within my reach to make it happen and so I got on board. I wanted to be fully involved and not just as a brand ambassador, so I signed on as a partner. NANDISH: We got a chance to vicariously live our childhood dream of racing (à la riders on the track) through this, so we said, let’s go for it (Laughs). More seriously though, about eight months ago, all the stockholders of this venture who are from different backgrounds and day jobs, but united by our passion for racing, came together, took a good hard look at the business of motoracing and decided to go for it. There was no looking back. It’s been an exciting eight months. How did Dhoni fit into the picture? NAG: When we were putting together this venture, it was important that we bring on board a sports icon with mass appeal and a fan base to partner with us. So when we pitched this to MSD, who is an avid biker himself and as passionate about racing as all of us, he was excited at the prospect and agreed to come onboard immediately. Overall, everything aligned for us to put the best team together both on and off the track to make Indian motor sport history. Given that Formula 1 has made just inroads into the country and motosports is still in a nascent stage in India, do you think the audience is ready for this? NANDISH: We knew we had to

You also seem to have a bigger agenda for the sport in the country? NANDISH: Oh definitely, this is not just about the team but also giving to motosport in India. We’ll be looking at setting up the racing academy next year, identifying raw talent, getting them on board, training them and more. The idea is to get an Indian rider on the circuit in 3-5 years. NAG: It’s not an easy task. For that to happen, racing has to be taken up as a career, not as a hobby. But we’ll concentrate as much on putting India on the global motosporting map as on promoting the sport in India.

blaze the trail. Those who are the first to do something also have the overwhelming responsibility to make it a resounding success. With great men and machines, I think we have the right recipe to succeed on the track. NAG: It is a little ahead of time, yes. But think of it this way. If you see a Team India winning races and world championships on a global platform anywhere, it will have people talking and watching, and your team will draw its own audience to the sport. Till recently, having an Indian representation in motosports seemed like an achievement in itself, let alone winning. But your team has already had a podium finish last year and you have your eyes set on the cham-

pionship next. It’s a complete shift in attitude, isn’t it? NAG: Yeah, absolutely. We have the man, machine and technology to make it happen. We have the Kawasaki bike which won

Motorcycle Diaries First bike: I bought my first bike when I was 19. It was a Honda Twin Star, 175cc, a bike which I’ll always cherish. First super bike: It was a 750cc, 4-cylinder Suzuki 750Gs that I bought in the US, and went on many road trips during my grad study at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Here and now: I have a Yamaha 1000cc, a Honda 1000 CBR and a Kawasaki 1000cc Ninja.

the FIM World Championship and terrific riders, including the three-time World SuperSport Champion, Kenan Sofouglu, riding for us to give us an edge. And of course, we have the iconic technical director, Andrew Stone, who is known for taking teams to victory. So we are geared to win. Was it difficult to convince World Champions like these to come onboard a rookie team? NANDISH: The way the team performed in the first few races inspired Kawasaki to partner with us. When you become the factory team for such a large brand in the world, it becomes a lot easier. Would have they come if that hadn’t happened? I’d be very doubtful. But we played our cards right.

If given a chance, would you like to ride the Ninja ZX-6R? NAG: Absolutely, without a doubt! I’m too old to race on it but I’d love to take it on a spin around the circuit. NANDISH: One of the riders from the team recently asked me to hop on for a ride and I said no way. I’m going to stick with the back end of the business. It’s great that these are superbikes that anyone can own and ride. But is safety to be strongly advocated for those aiming to ride them on the roads? NAG: Definitely. Safety is such an important point. These riders train for years and are consummate professionals. They take a lot of precautions with their gear and their riding, so there are almost no fatalities. An equal, if not more, safeguards must be practised by those on the roads. With your choc-a-bloc schedule, will you be attending any of the races next year? NAG: I’d love to attend them all but it will depend on my other commitments. However, I’ll definitely be at Mahi Team India’s debut at the Buddh Circuit in March next year.

A year later, the GHMC has bought more fogging machines. Doctors say that the fumigant is more harmful to humans than mosquitoes. But will the GHMC ever learn?

Not a single Congress corporator, including the deputy mayor, was invited for the inauguration of the job fair. corporators at the inauguration were from MIM party. It is believed that Mayor Md Majid Hussain himself discouraged officials from inviting representatives from the Congress as he recently snapped ties with the party. Although one could see several public representatives,

including Congress MLAs and corporators, at the first job mela held in the South Zone, the current mela — in the Central Zone — is being used to play out political battles owing to recent developments. Another aspect of the job mela that is attracting the ire of politicians is the use of the slogan, ‘Shaher hamara Mayor hamara’ (Our city, our mayor). This too is against protocol, but so far, no one has taken responsibility for it. Vexed Congress leaders said they will take up the case with the commissioner, MT Krishna Babu once he returns from his training in Bangalore.

According to Bhavaninagar police, the accused, Yousuf, and Mohd Azharuddin, the owner of the bike, are neighbours and had good ties. Both of them recently fell out over an argument and Yousuf threatened to take revenge. In the wee hours of Friday, Yousuf doused Azharuddin’s bike with kerosene and set it on fire. The Bhavaninagar police were called in and Azharuddin named Yousuf as a suspect. Yousuf was taken into custody and confessed to the crime after an interrogation. A case has been booked against him.

Cong undertakes padayatra The move is seen as an attempt to counter the mudslinging and allegations by the Opposition. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com

L

eft with no option but to reach out to the people in the wake of rival political parties’ padayatras (mass contact programmes), leaders of the ruling Congress have also launched a padayatra, albeit on the development plank. The padayatra, called Bhageeratha Vijaya Yatra, was launched by senior Congress leader and minister for revenue N Raghuveera Reddy in Kurnool district of Rayalaseema region on November 18. Though the minister claimed that he was undertaking this padayatra to celebrate the inauguration of an irrigation project, which would address the problems of thousands of people in drought-hit Rayalasemma region, it seems obvious that the minister’s move was aimed at countering the mudslinging campaigns by rival political parties. This is evident in the fact that many senior Congress leaders and Cabinet colleagues are making a beeline for the yatra, despite the fact that it is confined only to Rayalaseema region. In the last three days alone, Cabinet ministers DK Aruna, Kanna Lakshminarayana, Syed

Mohammad Ahamadullah and deputy Speaker Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka participated in the padayatra. Apart from these leaders, PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana made his presence felt by flagging off the yatra. The intention of all these leaders is clear, say analysts. They used the occasion to mount an attack on the opposition

A Cabinet minister who participated in the padayatra told Postnoon that the padayatra would help the party and State government in launching a political attack on rival parties, besides acting as a platform to

reach out to people of the State. “I personally feel that the padayatra was a much-needed step for the party and the government in defending ourselves against the criticism of rival parties like TDP and YSRC. These two parties have launched mudslinging campaigns against our government and are using all resources to malign our party’s image. The padayatra launched by Reddy would help us in coming out clean from the opposition attack,” he said. The minister also felt that there was a strong need to hold such yatras in coming days to instil confidence among the party workers and people alike. He warned that the party would be left in the lurch if it did not counter the strategies of rival parties in equal measure. Party MLA from Anantapur district Madhusudhan Gupta also felt the same. He added that the padayatra is receiving good response from the people of Rayalaseema region. The yatra will conclude on November 29 in Jeedipally village of Ananatapur district. TDP president Chandrababu Naidu and Sharmila, the sister of Jaganmohan Reddy, launched their padayatras on October 2 and 18 respectively.

he State government seems to have finally woken up from its deep slumber that resulted in severe shortage of power in the State. With an objective of tackling the power shortage problem in future and to turn the State into a power-surplus state, the government has decided to encourage renewable energy projects, particularly solar, wind and biomass, to generate power in a big way. Keeping this goal in mind, CM Kiran Kumar Reddy recently held a high-level review meeting with his Cabinet colleagues and officials concerned. During the meeting, he gave a go-ahead to all the proposed power projects and asked that it be ensured that these projects be commissioned

As part of its ambitious plans, the government has also decided to equip all government-run educational institutions with solar power plants for lighting, cooking and hot water. The BJP floor leader was unable to digest the fact that this was a government advertisement that was being used since the last one month. Interestingly, he learnt about the ‘misdeed’ while accompanying the mayor who had inaugurated the job mela. With the TDP floor leader‘s absence during the general body meeting on December 1, the expectations for strong opposition candidates now rests with the BJP floor leader. However, when asked about the preparations being made by the party for the next meeting, he mumbled and appeared ill-prepared. He excused himself by saying that a ‘separate press conference will be organised’ to disclose plans for the council meet. MN

BUTCHERING THE LANGUAGE

It is a well-known fact that many politicians have scant respect for communicating in a particular language. In fact, a lot of politicians, especially those from the State, have no qualms about butchering the English language or even an individual’s name at the drop of a hat. Take, for instance, the case of Ajmal Kasab being hanged at Pune’s Yerwada Jail on Wednesday. Many politicians contacted by Postnoon insisted on calling the terrorist Khasaab instead of Kasab. Residents are surprised that the GHMC, which has failed to provide a basic staircase despite six months of project work, actually plans on building an elevator and an escalator, which has led to more jokes. GHMC’s unholy nexus MD NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com

he GHMC union has unveiled an unholy nexus between GHMC officials and contractors that is draining the Corporations coffers of around `30 crore each year. The standing committee had approved the procurement of 23 new Dumper Placer vehicles for `3, 16, 25,000 and 17 25-ton tipper vehicles for `3,82,50,000 in April. Despite this, the corporation, which should have procured them, continues to engage hired vehicles to dispose garbage. “This is nothing but mass corruption in the corporation. What is

the need to hire vehicles which are causing unimaginable financial loss to the Corporation?” asked U Gopal, president of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees Union. Gopal said that the corporation can instead use the loss amount to purchase vehicles which the GHMC can use for a good 10 to 15 years.

“GHMC officials and contractors are wantonly ignoring the financial interests of the corporation. The GHMC received the Clean and Green Award when its own vehicles were engaged in lifting and transporting garbage. Hiring other vehicles is only detrimental to the corporation and the City,” he added. Gopal also pointed out that the move to deploy private vehicles was only creating employment anxiety. The GHMEU has taken strong objection to hiring vehicles for garbage disposal. In its demand to GHMC, the union has asked for the immediate withdraw of all private vehicles within 15 days. If the corporation fails to do this, the union has threatened an agitation.

choolchildren squeezed tightly into autorickshaws, at times many leaning dangerously out of them, is a common sight on the roads. With more and more incidents of children losing their lives in a bid to make a few extra bucks, there is a desperate need for strict enforcement of laws. The Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) does not permit more than six children in an auto, but it is common practice for auto drivers to carry 10-15 children. Add each child’s heavy schoolbag to this equation and it is more than what the driver can handle. Recently, three schoolchildren paid the price for this at Abids and died on the spot when their auto overturned. All the politicians and officials seem to do is visit the spot and console the parents. Is it worth risking your children’s lives for the sake of saving a few rupees?” he said. RS has given an ultimatum to the YSR Congress leader Sharmila that she should step on the Telangana soil only after making her stand on the statehood issue clear. TRS leaders Jitender Reddy and Niranjan Reddy alleged that the late CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy had no love for people of Telangana. He said all that YSR loved was Telangana lands and the votes of the people. They reminded that during the last elections YSR had campaigned that if the Maha Kootami, alliance of the TRS, TDP and Communists won, they would seal the Pothireddypadu project and stop water to Rayalaseema. The leaders have demanded that YS Vijayamma explain what YSR

meant by that. They said people of Telangana only want Telangana rule and not the Seemandhra rule. They have questioned whether it was not true that Jagan had displayed Samaikyandhra placard in the Lok Sabha and obstructed Telangana. The TRS leaders also alleged that late YSR had not given even 10 per cent of the funds given to Yogi Vemana University to the Telangana universities. They have also alleged that YSR had illegally diverted water from the Pothireddypadu reservoir to the Rayalaseema region. Stating that no one else had plundered Telangana like YSR, they said the people of the region would never forget his betrayal. NSS

Life of Pi is visually stunning Ang Lee’s latest film Life of Pi is not only a visual delight but also a profound piece of work that is far more cerebral than what it may seem.

HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com

I

f you haven’t read Yann Martel’s Booker Prize-winning novel Life of Pi, the ending of its film adaptation is going to catch you by surprise. In the film, Pi Patel (Irrfan Khan) tells a writer (Rafe Spall) a totally different version of the

incredible tale of his survival and gives the writer a choice to believe whichever version of the story he finds more amazing. In either case, there’s one common denominator. The tale of how Pi survives in the Pacific Ocean when the freight ship he was on sinks is both incredulous and breathtaking. Directed by Ang Lee, the film is a visual delight and also

addresses several issues relating to one’s faith in God, hope, relationship with nature, among many other things. Pi Patel lives with his parents in Pondicherry, India. At a young age, he gets fascinated by Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. His father (Adil Hussain) tells him to believe in reason, whereas his mother (Tabu) wants him to learn things on his own.

When he (Suraj Sharma) turns 16-years-old, his parents decide to migrate to Canada along with all the animals from their private zoo. During the journey, the freight ship carrying them sails right through a storm in Pacific Ocean and just before it sinks, Pi manages to escape on a lifeboat. The next morning, he finds himself in the company of an injured zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, a blazing sun and a never-ending ocean. The rest of this incredible story is about how Pi manages to survive amidst all odds, which includes loneliness and a strange friendship which he strikes with Richard Parker. Pi drifts along the waves for 227 days and nothing much really happens per se, yet in those never-ending moments of loneliness and isolation, Pi tries his best to keep himself and Richard Parker alive. When he realises that he’ll die soon, he looks up to the sky and pleads for help and every single time, a miracle occurs which reinforces his faith in God. Life of Pi is filled with many such incident and in the middle of the night, when the ocean reflects the stars above and the sparkling fish beneath its surface, it’s a moment of joy for Pi. Even Richard Parker is at peace with the nature around him at that moment. The film’s lead actor, Suraj Sharma, is an amazing find and

carries most part of the film on his shoulders. Richard Parker, the Bengal Tiger, is by far one of the best characters in a film and David Magee, the screenwriter, gives it so much personality that it’s hard not to fall in love with him. But the film truly belongs to Ang Lee. It’s nothing short of a miracle that he envisioned that Pi’s never-ending thoughts and desperation to survive can be made into a movie. Almost every scene in the ocean is finely crafted and the Movie: Life of Pi Cast: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu Director: Ang Lee Rating:

use of 3D is one of the best in recent years. It would be a crime to point out which scenes to look forward to in this film. Life of Pi is the kind of film which will leave you with more questions in the end. And these questions are likely to be — Was it real? Or did I daydream like Pi? All said and done, Life of Pi is surreal, profound, frustrating and above all, a memoir of survival against all odds. Like life itself.

Time to Engineer change Engi neer ing colleges and students might be dime-a-dozen. But what the country really lacks today is qual ity engi neer ing education and graduates who are employa ble.

ARUNIMA RAJAN arunima.r@postnoon.com

W

ith science taking a back seat, India’s once-shining engineers seem to be losing their sheen. What then does the future have in store for one of our brightest minds? Since its inception, India has always given high priority to science education. Needless to say, engineering colleges attract the best minds of the country. During the early ’70s and ’80s, when a student came out of an engineering college he had a sense of accomplishment and a high-paying job in hand. But, all is not well with the technical education sector now. Recent reports published by bodies like Nasscom state that 50 per cent of engineering graduates from India are unemployable. Venugopal KR, principal of Visvesvaraya University College of Engineering, one of the oldest engineering colleges in the country, tells Postnoon that most bureaucrats don’t properly understand how technical institutes function and are responsible for this downfall.

Q: Do you think our engineering colleges inculcate scientific temper in students? A: Privatisation had a huge impact on the technical education sector. For instance, in 1974, there were only five engineering colleges under Bangalore University’s ambit. Admission was based on the academic records and on the interview of students. So, only the creamy layer got the opportunity to study in an engineering college. Now, there are nearly 70 engineering colleges in Bangalore alone. So, the profiles of students in campuses across the country have changed. Further, most of the colleges have a deficit of talented teachers and often run their institutes with the help of visiting faculty. As a result, they often try to focus on simply finishing the curriculum. Q: How important is academic freedom for a technical institute? A: Educational institutions should have the freedom to plan their courses. When you are affiliated to a specific university, it often curbs the growth and development of the institute. The syllabus prescribed by tech-

Governing councils of institutes often comprise of bureaucrats who do not know how to run educational institutes. Several engineering colleges are short on faculty, as recruitment procedures often get delayed due to bureaucracy. It’s hard to deliver when you don’t have enough number of people on board.

nical universities is often not on par with industry requirements. The curriculum of an undergraduate programme should be revised once in four years and once every two years for post graduate courses. Q: Is the traditional mode of instruction responsible for the deterioration of quality? A: Most engineering colleges rely on the lecture method for teaching. The current academic calendar does not permit us to introduce new methods of teaching. Teachers are already overburdened with academic load.

Q: Should technical institutes lay off non-performers? A: In an ideal scenario compensation of a teacher should be proportionate to their performance. While it’s easy for a private institute to ask their faculty member to leave based on their research output, it’s not easy for a government-run institute like ours. Q: Can we save our technical institutes? A: The government is pumping money only in to select institutes like National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Technology. They perform better than other colleges due to their students, not because of the performance of their faculty. Apart from this, government colleges tend to lose out for a cou-

ple of other reasons. Firstly, most government engineering colleges do not have tie ups with the industry. Companies should look beyond IITs and partner with other engineering colleges. HR managers want to reduce their training costs, but they should also understand that it’s not always easy to accommodate their demands to change the curriculum. Also, one of the major sources of income for an educational institute is through fees. The fees charged by most government institutes are too low, compared to the expenses incurred by the institute. In Karnataka, a student has to spend only `15,000 per annum for his BTech. This is not enough to upgrade infrastructure or buy equipment for the labs. The government should increase the fee for these institutes and provide educational loans for students. All India Council for Technical Education is mooting a proposal to stop giving permission to set up new engineering colleges from 2014. This might also provide some relief to the sector.

I would have told you that I would be in a meeting. Anyway, tell me how is your new house? I am sorry, I could not come for the house warming ceremony. Abhi: The house is good, comfortable. Actually I am here to discuss the tax implications of buying the house. Nicky: What about it? Abhi: Till last year, I was claiming Housing Rent Allowance (HRA) deduction under section 10(13A) of the income tax act. Am I still eligible to claim those? Nicky: How can you? Since you are living in your own house, you are not paying any rent. So you cannot claim HRA

But you can claim deductions for your Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs) on your home loan. Abhi: How? Nicky: The EMI is divided into the principal component and the interest component. The bank must have sent a statement to you with this break up. Or they will send it to you, if they haven't done it yet. The princi-

pal component of up to Rs1 Lakh can be claimed under section 80c and the interest component of up to `1.5 Lakhs can be claimed under section 24b of the income tax act. Abhi: But isn't section 80c the same section where we claim our life insurance premium and provident fund (EPF) contributions? Nicky: Yes, you are right. Hence the benefit of claiming

the principal under section 80c is limited. In the initial years of the EMI payment, the principal component is very small. In the later years, when the principal component is larger, assuming that your salary goes up with time, the entire 80c limit may be reached with EPF contributions and insurance premiums alone. The interest deductions do help in saving significant amounts of tax though. If you fall under the 30% tax bracket

and pay more than `1.5 lakhs as interest, you end up saving `45,000 in taxes. Abhi: So even if I am not able to claim the HRA, a home loan still helps me reduce my tax burden. Nicky: Absolutely. Infact you did a very good job of buying a house in Hyderabad. A recent research done by www.arthayantra.com has shown that Hyderabad is one of the most affordable places to buy a house for a professional. Abhi: Oh really? I am glad I made the right decision.

World KOREAN CONUNDRUM

North set for missile launch OKYO: US satellites have picked up signs that North Korea is preparing to launch a long-range missile, a Japanese newspaper reported on Friday. North Korea moved missile parts from its military factory in Pyongyang to a launch pad in Tongchang-ri in the country's far northwest early November, the Asahi Shimbun said. The US government has already informed its counterparts in Japan and South Korea about the move, the daily said, adding that the three countries had increased vigilance. The developments came after North Korea carried out a failed rocket launch in April in what the communist state said was an attempt to put a satellite into orbit from the same launch pad. Images of the shipment recently taken by US satellites were similar to one used in the April launch.

Missile upgrade in South SEOUL: South Korea has begun fitting naval destroyers with a new, indigenously-developed cruise missile capable of making precision strikes anywhere in North Korea, a news report said Friday. Yonhap news agency quoted a senior military official as saying the South had armed two destroyers with 32 of its Hyunmu 3C Tomahawk-style cruise missiles. The missiles have a range of 400 kilometres (250 miles) and are capable of reaching targets in the farthest corners of North Korea within a three meter (nine foot) degree of accuracy, the report said. The unidentified military official said the deployment was partly a response to North Korea's strengthened naval presence off the peninsula's west coast.

Time to save the bears

India will play host to the prestigious International Bear Conference this year. NATIONAL ACTION PLAN

ELIZABETH SOUMYA elizabeth.s@postnoon.com

N

ew Delhi is gearing up to host the prestigious International Conference on Bear Research and Management next week for five days starting November 26. The conferences held alternatively in the Americas and Eurasia on an 18month rotation, will take place in India this time around with participants from 37 countries. So far, other large mammals such as tiger, elephant, rhino and snow leopard have been used for overall representation of the Indian wildlife. But unlike these mammals, bears are not region specific and have a pan-India presence making them an ideal representation of the country. Bruce McLellan from the International Bear Association (IBA) said while the last two editions were held in Ottawa and Georgia, India was chosen for important reasons. "Bear trade because of the practice of danc-

ing bears has come to an end in India, dancing bears have been rehabilitated. This is a great victory. Also, of the eight bear species, India is home to four

(Sloth Bear, Himalayan brown bear, Asiatic black bear, and the Sun bear), this is more than any other country in the world." He also points out that bears have a

lot more challenges in Asia. The issues include poaching for body parts, illegal pet trade, conflict with local communities and degradation of their habitat.

India will launch its national plan for the conservation and welfare of bears across the country at the conference. The plan will summarise the threats faced by bears in India, and will outline management actions to be undertaken by each state. The work on this was started last year with the identification of the 26 bear range states. Using available bear distribution maps of each state, divisions (within each state) bear presence was identified and studied. About 350-400 individuals including IBA members, bear experts, field researchers, students and managers of bear populations and habitats, from at least 35 countries will participate. A total of 171 papers will be presented during the course of the conference. The conference will be hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in collaboration with Wildlife Institute of India, Wildlife Trust of India and the Central Zoo Authority.

Trash exhibition offers peek at Everest

DEEPAK ADHIKARI Agence France-Presse KATHMANDU: A group of artists is staging an exhibition of sculpture made from tonnes of trash collected on Mount Everest, highlighting the toll that decades of mountaineering have taken on the highest peak. Discarded oxygen and cooking gas cylinders, ropes, tents, glasses, beer cans, plastic and even the remains of a helicopter make up 75 artworks commissioned for the "Everest 8848 Art Project" on display in Kathmandu. "We thought that this would help promote the artists as well as contribute to making Everest clean. We were happy to get the trash and they were happy to get rid of it," said Kripa Rana Shahi, whose company is behind the show. Sixty-five porters put

together by the Kathmandubased Everest Summiteers Association (ESA) and 75 yaks amassed a total of eight tonnes of trash, which they carried down from the mountain over two Spring season expeditions. Fifteen Nepalese artists then spent a month in workshops

preparing pieces for the exhibition, which has begun in a luxury hotel in Kathmandu and will move to the tourist hub of Pokhara next week. In one of the works by painter and poet Sunita Rana, white shards of aluminium from drinks cans are fashioned

In another, remains of a helicopter which crashed in 1974 at camp two while carrying food for Italian climbers are used for an idol of lord Ganesh. The artworks range in price from 1,500 rupees ($17) to 200,000, and several pieces with a total worth around 500,000 rupees have been sold. Environmental activists say Everest is littered with the detritus of past expeditions, including human waste and mountaineers' corpses, which do not decompose because of the extreme cold.Climbers spend tens of thousands of dollars trying to reach the summit, but local sherpas complain that few pay much attention to the rubbish they leave behind. Expeditions currently have

to fork out a $4,000 deposit, which is refundable once they show they have brought back everything they took onto the mountain. But officials say the rules are difficult to implement. "As the word on the garbage on Everest spread, it tarnished the image of our country. I was saddened when the foreigners talked about Everest as if it were a dumping site," said Everest Summiteers Association president Wongchu Sherpa. "We have recommended that if a climber is found littering the mountain, he or she should be banned for five years," Sherpa told AFP. "In the past, we have conducted random checks and have asked climbers to collect the trash that he or she disposes. We have also recommended creating a fund to collect $10 from every climber and use it for garbage collection."

Much to prove for Qatar

Q

atar has much to prove in the coming days as the fossil fuel producing nation with the world's largest per capita carbon footprint hosts the 18th UN climate change conference. Environmentalists question whether the tiny emirate has the diplomatic muscle, and more importantly, the political will, to play a positive role in the critical two-week huddle that kicks off next Monday in Doha. The oil- and gas-guzzling Gulf nation, seeking to expand its global reach and recently awarded the 2022 football World Cup, insists it is committed to a successful conference. Not all are convinced. "It (Qatar) would not be my choice," Raul Estrada, an architect of the historic 1997 Kyoto Protocol, told AFP. He says the country's funding of the conference would have been an important factor in awarding it the event. But as conference president, Qatar hasn't been seen to be "pushing for a result". "You need to have a strong leadership to have progress, to advance. I don't see that leadership," said the Argentine exdiplomat. "In the whole history of the climate negotiations, Qatar was trying to avoid the adoption of commitments to reduce the use of fossil fuels in order to mitigate climate change." The Gulf state which depends almost entirely on fossil fuels for income and energy will find itself in a strange role — expected to steer some 194 nations towards a new deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and by default, their dependence on oil and gas. In the latest Living Planet Report in May, green group WWF named the emirate as the country with the largest ecological footprint. AFP

IMAGINARY POLICE

ANONYMOUS ALIEN

I

magine a crime has been committed. In an imaginary country. Valuable jewelry has been stolen. Or perhaps, someone has been blackmailed. The police investigate, but uncover no leads. And then, the crime is repeated. More police investigate. And they start getting frustrated. They widen their net, increase their searches. The crime is repeated a third time. Now the police are downright angry. They are starting to look bad, not catching this repeat criminal. They start pulling even unlikely “suspects” into the station. All are impoverished, with no money, no connections, no lawyers, no means. The police question them. Unsatisfied with their answers, the police in this imaginary country begin to beat on them. Specifically, they beat on the bottom of their feet. Why there? The bruises could just be from walking, so there’s no proof that the beatings even took place. At first, the “suspects” plead their innocence. But as the beatings move from minutes into hours, and from hours into days, more and more of the suspects confess. Confess to what? To anything. To the crime the police are investigating. To crimes that haven’t even been committed. To whatever the police in this

imaginary country ask them to confess to…the pain is just too great to do anything else. Then, let’s say, in this imaginary crime, in this imaginary country, on the fourth day of the beatings, a real lead emerges, and quickly leads to a real suspect and a legitimate arrest. And all the other suspects being held by the police are released.

And that’s it. That’s the end of the story. Because in this imaginary crime, in this imaginary country, there is no Amnesty International the innocent victims of the beatings can report to; there’s no Federal Bureau of Investigations they can call on to investigate the police’s brutality. There are no options at all

in fact. So the “suspects” return to their lives. Most of them stop limping within a few weeks. After a few months, their nightmares start to diminish. And within a few years, if they’re lucky, they can see a policeman on the street without freezing in their tracks in sheer terror. But they never call the police again. No matter what crime they themselves are a victim of. And anybody who knows them – their family and friends and neighbours – never calls the police again either. All are afraid that if they report a crime, the police might view them as suspects, and turn their feet into punching bags. Soon enough, criminals start to realize that if they commit crimes in impoverished neighborhoods – neighborhoods where innocent people have been beaten by the police – nobody will report the crimes. They realize, simply put, that they can act with impunity. Which, of course, increases crime dramatically in these neighborhoods. Crime, in turn, begets more crime. And so on. And so on. And so on. In this imaginary country, one starts to wonder if the police are in fact increasing the overall crime rate? Or not? Let’s hope none of us ever have to live in such a place and find out. Think of those dark times your nation had been through to be free of the hands of a dictator, which still continues in countries like Syria. There are several other issues that need urgent action. he story of these two musicians makes for an interesting read because their journey as musicians spans two decades starting from childhood to youth and now their humble entry into the film fraternity. For the unknown, Vivek Sagar and Sanjay Das were part of Hyderabad’s erstwhile rock music fraternity, before the wave died away and these men decided to take it up as a profession. As Vivek puts it, “When we began as a band ‘Stiffneck Syndrome’ in 2004 December, we were just four people trying to make music. After four years of playing live and finishing college, we had decided to take it up as a profession.” “Back then, we used to play a whole mixed set of Beatles, Kula Shaker, System of a Down and Coldplay as a four piece band. This was when Hyderabad did not have much of an alternative rock following, but we were surprised with the

way the crowd used to receive it,” says Sanjay. They garnered a more loyal fan base when Vivek, Sanjay and Phani, a mandolin player trained in classical Carnatic music, put together another three piece called ‘Catharsis’, which explored the fine lines between classical carnatic music, jazz and world styles. Catharsis’ bare beginnings also included winning a talent hunt on television and cutting an album with AR Rahman. “We did not actually work with Rahman, but we recorded a couple of songs in AM Studios at Chennai.” In due course, when Vivek finally finished engineering and Sanjay left academics for the more interesting pursuit of drumming, the boys decided to build their own studio, Tapeloop Studios. “We had convinced my father who is an artist himself, to lend us his place which we then converted into a jam-pad/studio. Our first few projects were making jingles for short obscure films and documentaries,” says Sanjay. Tapeloop started as a jam

really music making but rather, producing tunes to suit many people’s fancies,” says Sanjay. Their debut is about to be released as “Race” in the Telugu film fraternity. Their work has already received rave reviews for its fresh, new sound and music. Are these boys glad about their entry into films, even though some might call them going overboard and becoming commercial? “I do not see it as going commercial, because we are still making music at the end of the day. But yes, we are not used to publicity programmes and radio interviews and certainly not used to our pictures in the newspapers,” laughs Vivek. As we move towards the end of the conversation, they take leave and begin laying tracks for their latest project, to do what they have always loved to do — make music. Together they have composed and produced over 400 jingles, background scores and songs for commercials, radio stations, corporate films and other independent film works.

It might seem cute initially, but this time the hiccups refuse to die down and you’re also feeling uncomfortable with a mean heartburn. Embarrassed that you’d probably eaten too much, you make your excuses and leave. However, the problem persists, so much so that you find it hard

Secondary factors like tumours or a problem with the duodenum, which obstruct the emptying of the stomach can also cause an individual to suffer from gastroesophageal reflux

Palpitations are a sensation of a rapid or irregular heartbeat. A person with palpitations may describe their heart as 'racing', 'thumping' or 'pounding'. Walking steps protects woman from heart risk

According to a study, walking 6,000 or more steps daily, ensures a healthier life for ageing women, besides lowering their risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. BRASILIA: Walking 6,000 or more steps daily, ensures a healthier life for ageing women, besides lowering their risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, says a study. Although other studies have shown the value of structured exercise in lowering health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, this study has shown that habitual physical activity — whether it comes from exercising or just activities of daily living — has the power to improve women’s health. In Passo Fundo, Brazil, 292 women aged between 45 and 72 years wore pedometers and recorded their daily steps. Women who took 6,000 or more steps per day were considered active and those who took fewer inactive, the journal Menopause reported. They also had health checks such as cholesterol and blood sugar and waist and hip measurement (to gauge abdominal obesity, which is a risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease), according to a statement of National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, Brazil. Veronica Colpani, Karen Oppermann and Poli Mara Spritzer, who co-authored the study, said that active women were much less likely than the inactive ones to be obese and have metabolic syndrome or frank diabetes, whether or not they had gone through menopause - when these risks usually go up - and whether or not they were using hormone therapy.

Gene that triggers Alzheimer’s discovered LONDON: In a breakthrough, British scientists have isolated a “killer” gene which they believe causes Alzheimer’s. Researchers at King’s College London believe that by identifying cluster in as a trigger for Alzheimer’s they have taken a vital step towards developing treatments to stop the neuro degenerative disease in its tracks. Experts at the university’s Institute of Psychiatry believe cluster in sets off a chain of events that causes amyloid-beta, a protein, to start destroying brain cells, the Daily Express reported. Many drugs prescribed for Alzheimer’s patients aims to cut the amount of amyloid-beta in their brain. The neurologists are now looking instead at blocking clusterin’s trigger action “in order to ameliorate or even halt Alzheimer’s”. “This important study fills in critical gaps regarding the complex way Alzheimer’s takes hold and could lead us towards a new way of diagnosing, targeting and treating the condition more effectively,” Professor Clive Ballard, director of research for the Alzheimer’s Society, said. The research will be published in the medical journal Molecular Psychiatry. PTI

STUDY

4D scans show foetuses yawn in womb’ LONDON: Unborn babies not only hiccoughs, swallow and stretch in the womb, they also yawn, a new study has found. The 4D scans of 15 healthy foetuses, by Durham and Lancaster Universities, also suggest that yawning is a developmental process which could

potentially give doctors another index of a foetus’ health. While some researchers have suggested that foetuses yawn, others have disagreed and claim it is simple mouth opening. However, the new research clearly distinguished ‘yawning’ from ‘non-yawn mouth opening’

based on the duration of mouthopening. The researchers did this by using the 4D video footage to closely examine all events where a mouth stretch occurred in the foetus. Using a newly developed criteria, the research team found that over half of the mouth open-

ings observed in the study were classed as yawns. The study was carried out on eight female and seven male foetuses from 24 to 36 weeks gestation. The researchers found that yawning declined from 28 weeks and that there was no significant difference between boys and

girls in yawning frequency. Although the function and importance of yawning is still unknown, the study findings suggest that yawning could be linked to foetal development, and as such could provide a further medical indication of the health of the unborn baby. PTI

A huge set resembling autonagar was erected in Hyderabad and we hear that Naga Chaitanya had to really get his hands dirty throughout the film. The first look of the film was unveiled today on the eve of Naga Chaitanya’s 26th birthday. Samantha is paired up with him in the film. KAKURO

How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

QUICK CROSSWORD

enced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so

on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

DP WORLD TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

ATP CHENNAI OPEN

Donald leads McIlroy

Donald, who lost his No 1 crown to McIlroy this year, said it felt different this year without feeling the pressure of trying to win the Race to Dubai. JOSH CHARLES Agence France-Presse DUBAI: All it took was 18 holes for the cream to rise to the top as world No 2 Luke Donald (right) took a one-shot lead over world No 1 Rory McIlroy after the opening round of the $8million DP World Tour Championship on Thursday. At the Earth course of Jumeirah Golf Estates, England’s Donald shot a bogeyfree round of seven-under par 65, while McIlroy could have joined him on the top but had to be satisfied with a par on the par-5 final hole after hitting his tee shot into the water. That left McIlroy, who has already won the European Tour’s Race to Dubai crown by taking an unassailable lead on top of the Money List, at sixunder par 66 and tied for second with Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Scotland’s Marc Warren. Meanwhile, world No 4 and No 6, Lee Westwood of England and Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa, were another shot

McIlroy feels Wozniacki’s Christmas presence World number one Rory McIlroy found himself discussing Christmas presents instead of his game at a news conference on Thursday when his tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki demanded a special gift. Wozniacki, 22, put her Northern Ireland boyfriend firmly on the spot as he talked reporters through his first round at the $8 million DP World Tour Championship where he was one shot off the lead. “You obviously have unbelievable support this week,” said Wozniacki.

behind and tied fourth at fiveunder par 67 in a group that also included major champions Padraig Harrington and Martin Kaymer. World No 7 Justin Rose was in a group of 10 players tied at 11th place at four-under par 68. Donald, who won last week’s Dunlop Phoenix Open on Japan Golf Tour, was delighted to carry on his form from there. After making an eightfooter on the first and a 15-footer on the fourth to save pars, he unleashed seven birdies in a stretch of 10 holes. “It is a nice start and I felt very comfortable out there. Nice to pick up from where I left off last week in Japan,” said Donald. You always feel different the week after winning. You just feel like you have that little extra pep in your step and there is a bit more confidence flowing. “That middle section of the course from about 5 to 14, I really swung my clubs well and made a lot of nice putts.” “Definitely, the feeling was a different one today on the first tee,” he added.

Berdych, Tipsarevic to play in India CHENNAI: World number six Tomas Berdych (above) of the Czech Republic and number nine Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia head a strong field for the next edition of the ATP Chennai Open, organisers said on Thursday. The 15th-ranked Marin Cilic of Croatia and number 17 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland are the other top-20 players taking part in the $450,000 season opener in the southern Indian city of Chennai from December 31. Berdych, 27, ended the previous season by winning his opening singles and doubles tie with Radek Stepanek in his country’s memorable 3-2 win over Spain in the Davis Cup final in Prague last week. Tipsarevic opened 2012 by bagging the doubles title at the Chennai Open with Indian ace Leander Paes, but lost in the singles final to big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic. PTI

PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW

Baptism by fire awaits Benitez

Benitez arrived at Chelsea as the club's ninth manager in just over eight years under the ownership of Abramovich. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse

MIKE MCGRATH Agence France-Presse

LONDON: Rafael Benitez (right) began his reign as Chelsea interim manager insisting working with Roman Abramovich will be "easier" than the US ownership duo of George Gillett and Tom Hicks he knew at Liverpool. Former Liverpool coach Benitez, 52, is only under contract until the end of the current season after replacing Roberto di Matteo, sacked on Wednesday after European champions Chelsea lost 3-0 at Juventus in the Champions League. Chelsea's rapid turnover of managers under Abramovich has long been a topic of discussion in English football. But Benitez, who on Thursday had still to meet the Blues owner, said the experience could not be worse than the difficult relationship with Gillett and Hicks that led to the Spaniard's departure from Liverpool two years ago. "If you have two bosses who aren't talking to each other, it's

difficult," said Benitez. "You want a striker and one of them says: 'I don't know...' "This will be easier." Benitez will have a tough baptism of fire on Sunday when Manchester City, fresh from a draw with Real Madrid that scuppered their hopes of reach-

ing the Champions League last 16 for the second season in a row, arrive in west London with a four-point lead over the hosts. "Chelsea tried to win the Champions League for 10 years," said City manager Roberto Mancini. "The Champions League is strange, different, and we have to be patient for this." Manchester United can overtake cross-town rivals City, if only for a day, at the summit when they face a bottom of the table QPR still looking for a first league win this season under Old Trafford old boy Mark Hughes on Saturday. The match will be United's first since Friday's scheduled unveiling of a statue of manager Alex Ferguson.

LONDON: Arsene Wenger (above) believes Arsenal can take advantage of inconsistency among the Premier League title contenders and return to the top four of the table. Wenger's side have recovered from their own blip to record back-to-back wins ahead of this Saturday's trip to Aston Villa, whereas Chelsea and Manchester United were defeated in domestic action last weekend. Reigning champions and league leaders Manchester City also dropped points at West Ham recently and have been knocked out of the Champions League, offering Wenger hope of mounting a challenge at the top end. "With what is going on in the league, it looks like the team with consistency has a chance and if we are able to show consistency now we have a chance to come back to the top teams," said Wenger. "I am highly encouraged by the results last weekend because if you have a team who doesn't drop points no matter what you do, you will never come back once the difference is there," added the Frenchman, whose side head into the weekend four points outside the Champions League places. "We had a difficult period,

I hope now we can show the consistency that is needed to come back." Wenger has been pleased with his new signings over the last week and Jack Wilshere's return from injury. Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski have played key roles in the wins over Tottenham and Montpellier, while Wilshere was on the scoresheet against the French side as Arsenal secured a place in the last 16 of the Champions League. Magical Messi nears Mueller record DERMOT LEDWITH Agence France-Presse MADRID: Lionel Messi, with his 2012 goals tally at 80 midweek, can close in on German great Gerd Mueller's all-time record of 85 in a calendar year. The Argentinian had already surpassed Pele's total of 75 goals in 1958 and a double at Spartak

Moscow on Tuesday, when Barcelona secured their spot in the Champions League last 16, further boosted his hopes. With his La Ligaleading side travelling to Levante on Sunday, Messi now has eight matches left before the Christmas break in which to break Mueller's record of 85 goals in 1972.

"Everyone says I'm very competitive, I do plan my objectives year by year to keep improving and to win again all we have won before," Messi said. "I just like to train, play and win. I've been like that since I was young, but without my colleagues I would not achieve anything, they deserve all the credit." AFP

Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag, along with Sachin Tendulkar, to end the first session at 87 for three in 28 overs with Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli at the crease. Gambhir was the first to be dismissed. He struck a four of the very first ball of the innings before being trapped in front of the wickets on the very next ball by James Anderson. Sehwag, playing in his 100th Test today, failed to score a fairytale century. He seemed to have steadied India’s innings along with Cheteshwar Pujara after Gambhir’s dismissal, having hit four boundaries in his 30 off 43 balls. But a superb ball by Monty Panesar saw his stumps disturbed and taking the long walk back to the pavilion.. Sehwag’s wicket brought local lad Tendulkar to the crease who was welcomed by cheers from the crowd. The master blaster opened his innings with a four but its glory did not last long. Tendulkar’s poor form with the bat continued as a splendid ball from Panesar saw

him being dismissed for a paltry score of eight. Panesar was undoubtedly the pick of the English bowlers having dismissed the two most dreaded batsmen in the Indian side to end with figures of two for 29 from 11 overs. Earlier, having won the toss, Dhoni decided to go into the

It was a psychological breakthrough for South Africa with Clarke scoring 489 runs before they got him out after his unbeaten 259 in last week's first Brisbane Test. Clarke hit 40 boundaries and a six off 257 balls but Australian wickets soon began

SA make sound start ADELAIDE: South Africa were 117 without loss in reply to Australia's first innings 550 at tea on the second day of the second Test at the Adelaide Oval on Friday. Skipper Graeme Smith was unbeaten on 57 with Alviro Petersen not out 47. Earlier in the day, Australia's hopes of getting a first innings total around 600 or even an innings declaration evaporated when South Africa finally removed skipper Michael Clarke early on the second morning. In sharp contrast to their first-day battering of the Proteas bowling to amass 482 for five at almost six runs an over, the Australians lost their last five wickets for 68. Clarke was finally out for the first time in the series on 230, some 20 minutes into the second day when he was bowled by Morne Morkel, who finished with five wickets for 146 off 30 overs. The Australian skipper became the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to post four 200s in a calendar year.

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association felicitated two of India’s ace batsmen, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag at the Wankhede Stadium, here today. Both the players were presented with mementoes by Ravi Savant, Hon. President of the MCA. While Sehwag was felicitated for playing 100 test matches (Today’s test being the 100th), Sachin was honoured for having completed 23 years in international cricket as well as for having slammed 100 international centuries. Trivia: Today the No 1 Test side (South Africa), Current World Cup winner (India) and T20WC champs (West Indies) are all playing Test cricket.

KHULNA, BANGLADESH: Marlon Samuels hit his highest Test score and Darren Bravo notched a hundred to lead the West Indies to 369-3 on the third day of the second and final Test against Bangladesh on Friday. Samuels was still batting on 191 but Bravo fell in the last over before lunch for 127 as the tourists trailed Bangladesh's first innings total of 387 by just 18 runs. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was the other unbeaten batsman on nought. The tourists are now set for a big lead on a lifeless Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium pitch as they look to win the two-match series after taking a 1-0 lead with their 77run triumph in the first Test in Dhaka. Bravo was adjudged legbefore off spinner Sohag Gazi as he tried to cut the ball, which hit the pad first and then the bat. Bravo hit ten boundaries during his 288-ball innings. He added 326 runs for the third wicket with Samuels to set the tone for a big West Indian
