LOAD SHEDDING With the monsoon yet to gain strength, load shedding in the City has increased, and officials indicate that it would continue for some more time. The outages are due to the demand-supply curve of 45 to 59 million units every day. Additional load will bare its effect on the power grid as the commencement of the khariff season forces authorities to impose unscheduled power cuts.

n Thursday afternoon the bustling area of Bibi Ka Chasma under Falaknuma police station was benumbed by the chilling scene of two bike-borne men firing at close range on a biker, who fell with a scream and thud from his vehicle. The attackers fled while people looked on with disbelief. The Falaknuma police have now solved the mystery which happens to be the cine-style revenge begetting revenge and at the centre of the case is a mother whose son was allegedly killed by the biker. Identified as Mohd Mansoor, who runs a hotel in Shalibanda,

Now, says deputy commissioner of police Akun Sabharwal, Abubaker’s mother Abeeda Begum is said to have hatched a plot to get at her son’s killer. Monsoor is in hospital with a
bullet in his brain and fighting for life. The plot was revealed after the arrest of seven men involved — Afroze, Aleem, Ismail, Azhar, Nazeer, Feroz, and Abida — and seizure of two country-made revolvers, five bullets, one knife and a motorcycle, which have allegedly been used in the crime. Interrogation revealed that the grieving mother had arranged the crime to take revenge on Monsoor. Police now have all clues to the murder-bid and the only missing link is to find out the source of the revolvers, who sold them to the gang. Police say illegal firearms have been coming to the City and this case established beyond doubt that such weapons are available. It is said that Abeeda Begum has reportedly owned up the plot and pleaded that she was heartbroken when her son was hacked to death by Monsoor.

he call given by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (T-JAC), the umbrella organisation of pro-Telangana forces including government employees, to utilise the presidential election to press for T-State has created a confusion in their ranks. The TRS has not yet pronounced anything on it as on today. The TRS, it is said, is discussing the issue and would come out with an official stance in a couple of days. The proTelangana forces are upbeat on signals emanating from Delhi. “After the recent bypoll results, a conducive environment to create separate Telangana has been created in the State. We hope that the Centre would take a positive decision to fulfill the aspirations of millions of Telangana people,” TRS senior leader and MLA K Eeswar told Postnoon. The T-JAC called upon all political parties from Telangana region to utilise ensuing presidential election to press for creation of separate Telangana. Commenting on the TJAC call, he said that
the party is prepared to boycott the presidential election for the sake of a separate state. “We are ready to do anything for Telangana state,” he said. On the other hand, the Telangana leaders of TDP are trying to cash in on the party’s likely decision to boycott the president’s election. “Our party has already decided to boycott the presidential election. As far as the call of TJAC is concerned, we are ready to abide by the call,” TDP MLA G. Kamalakar said on Saturday. He asked the Congress leaders to spell out its stand on the call.
CONGRESS
IS IN DISARRAY
Meanwhile, the ruling Congress is in a confused situation .They believe that the call given by T-JAC was unwarranted when it came to presidential elections. “ I don’t understand why did the T-JAC give such a call because presidential election is held by secret ballot. And nobody knows who would vote for whom,” Congress leader and MLA A Mohan told Postnoon.

o you thought only the poor suffer. That’s not the case; our ministers too are in poor quarters!
Many State ministers have been asked to put up with illmaintained and shoddy houses at the ministers’ quarters on Road 12, Banjara Hills. Ministers quarters complex on Road No. 12, Banjara Hills consists of 30 units. They're allotted by the General Administration Department (GAD) on the instructions of Chief Minister. This complex currently has two vacant quarters. Apart from this, the State has 10 ministers’ quarters at Kundan Bagh. According to officials of general administration department, the quarters at Kundan Bagh are generally not vacated as they are occupied by senior ministers! “The quarter where I stay is in a dilapidated condition. It looks like as if it would collapse after a heavy rain,” a minister told Postnoon seeking anonymity. He also said that his request for repairs of the quarters is yet to be honoured due to long bureaucratic procedures. “You know how much it will take to complete the bureaucratic procedures like completion of tender process and its execution. We are helpless as we can’t do anything since we are holding crucial positions,” he said.
The sprawling facade of the entrance to the ministers’ quarters is in sharp contrast with the poorly-maintained buildings inside. Possibly to hide the top-level mess, Postnoon was denied permission to take photographs of the dilapidated buildings. Another minister, who was inducted into the State Cabinet during the recent expansion, said that he was allotted quarter No. 19, a similar building in dilapidated condition. “My building is also dilapidated. I shifted to it as my family is not staying with me. If my family members would have stayed with me, my condition would have been worse,” he told Postnoon. The State government has constructed these quarters in Banjara Hills about two decades ago to provide accommodation to Cabinet ministers and to persons of equivalent stature like chief whip and whips of the government. The roads and build-
ings department is responsible for the maintenance and repair works at the ministers’ quarters. The department undertakes repairs and maintenance works by calling tenders in a regular manner whenever it receives requests from ministers.
VAASTU DOSAM ALSO HAUNTS MINISTERS
It is not the physical condition of these quarters haunting the ministers. Vaastu dosam also forced many ministers to opt for private accommodation. “I was given two quarters to choose from. But both were having vaastu problems. So, I did not opt for any of them. Many of the
good quarters with proper vaastu were occupied by senior ministers, so I did not have any option but to stay in private accommodation,” minister for animal husbandry P Viswaroopu said. Some of the ministers are happy to stay away from the ministers’ quarters for these prevailing reasons. “I was also allotted a quarter at the ministers’ quarters after I was inducted into the cabinet. But I rejected the offer as I am comfortable in my existing accommodation,” minister for BC welfare B Saraiah told this paper. He is presently staying at Old MLA Quarters at Hyderguda.
Executive engineer (roads and buildings department) Sudhakar agreed that some quarters are facing roofleakage problems but he did not waste time in asserting that they are undertaking these repairs whenever they receive a complaint from the ministers. "Most of the Quarters are very old but fit to live. "We are attending to all the problems which are brought to our notice," Sudhakar said.

effect on the power grid because of the commencement of the khariff season as authorities are forced to impose unscheduled power cuts. Lack of gas supply
and water levels drying up in the reservoir have crunched power supply from gas-based and hydelpower plants. Officials estimate that there has been a 20 per cent
increase in demand for power as against the predicted annual eight per cent. They predict that the demand for power will increase up to 60 MU by the end
of this month. The two- hour power cuts were introduced by the CPDCL since June 14 as a way of amending the increasing load on the power grid. The AP Transco has appealed to the Centre to allow 550 MW to be diverted from the central grid to save face, but the appeal is yet to be answered. While the issue of 550 MW yet to be decided, there has been an additional supply of 750 MW sourced through various power companies by the AP Transco. Supplementing this issue is that there are no new power plants that can bear the increasing load. Several power plant constructions have been delayed. Officials at the AP Transco are optimistic about resuming their services. “ We are trying to score as much load from the Central power grid and also efforts are on to resume work at the gas power plants. Now with the monsoons filling up the reservoirs, we are hopeful of meeting the demand,” an official said.

The double lives of Tokyo’s sarin attackers
Tokyo police recently arrested three remaining Aum fugitives more than 10 years after Japan’s deadliest terrorist attack, but the cult’s doomsday philosophy remains intact
S
hortly before 8 am on March 20, 1995, five followers of the doomsday cult Aum Supreme Truth boarded subway trains in central Tokyo. Using umbrellas with sharpened tips, they pierced plastic bags containing lethal quantities of sarin nerve agent, and fled as the liquid evaporated. As the sarin coursed through packed carriages, passengers started to cough and struggle for breath. Some of those who made it on to platforms and upstairs to street level collapsed, foaming at the mouth and coughing up blood. The attack killed 13 people and made 6,000 others ill. Many of those poisoned in this and another attack in the city of Matsumoto the previous year, will never fully recover from the damage the gas inflicted on their nervous systems. Seventeen years later, the recent arrests of three remaining Aum fugitives have brought partial closure to a
THE ATTACK SHOOK JAPAN’S CONFIDENCE IN ITS REPUTATION FOR SAFETY, SHATTERING THE PUBLIC’S BELIEF THAT IT WAS IMMUNE TO HOMEGROWN TERRORISM. crime — the worst-ever terrorist incident on Japanese soil — that traumatised a nation. The attack shook Japan’s confidence in its reputation for safety, shattering the public’s belief that it was immune to homegrown terrorism. How, many asked, could young men and women, among them graduates of Japan’s most prestigious universities, amass, undetected, a huge stockpile of chemical weapons at their compound in the foothills of Mount Fuji? Aum, which once boasted 10,000 members in Japan — and 30,000 in Russia — all loyal to the cult’s guru, Shoko Asahara, had chosen its victims carefully. The subway carriages were filled with bureaucrats on their way to work at ministries in the Kasumigaski district of Tokyo. For Aum, they represented a government with which it sought violent confrontation as a prelude to Armageddon. With membership now estimated to be in the hundreds, the cult has
renamed itself Aleph and renounced Asahara’s teachings — a bizarre mix of Buddhism and Christianity, yoga and the occult — but remains under close police surveillance. The crime sparked a nationwide manhunt and earned Asahara, the bearded, partially sighted guru, the status of Japan’s most wanted man. A total of 189 people have been tried in connection with the cult’s crimes; Asahara and 12 others now await execution. Three of his followers had managed to evade arrest until late last year. The first fugitive, Makoto Hirata, gave himself up at a Tokyo police station on New Year’s Eve. Early this month, Naoko Kikuchi, a 41-year-old suspected of mixing the sarin, was apprehended near Tokyo after a tip-off. And last week, police arrested Katsuya Takahashi, who allegedly drove one of the sarin couriers to his destination, as he left a manga comic cafe in the capital. New details about their time on the run suggest they were able to reinvent themselves as respectable citizens with alarming ease. Kikuchi invented an alias, held down a regular job and shared several homes with Takahashi in the 10 years they spent posing as a married couple. Takahashi had most recently worked at a construction site, living in cheap accommodation provided by his employer and making frequent visits to a local restaurant. His belief in Aum’s doomsday philosophy appears to have remained intact: in his bag police found several photographs of Asahara, while he has reportedly been practicing cult rituals in his cell. His arrest closes a significant chapter in the Aum saga, but it could be some time before the victims and relatives of the dead recover from their ordeal. “I was feeling pain for a long time ... how much more pain are [the recently arrested fugitives] going to give the victims and the bereaved families?” Shizue Takahashi, no relation to the suspect, whose husband died in the attack, told Kyodo News. Fumihiro Joyu, the leader of Circle of Rainbow Light, a group that split from Aum, and later Aleph, urged Takahashi to help police discover the full extent of Aum’s crimes and activities. “I want him to help society learn lessons so that this kind of thing never happens again,” Joyu, a former Aum
spokesman, said in a statement. Aleph, whose members continue to live in an apartment building in Tokyo, is reportedly finding new followers among university students, adding to fears that Aum, or a similarly volatile group, will emerge. Japan’s security commission recently decided to place the cult under surveillance for another three years, saying “there has been no change in cult mem-
bers’ faith in [Asahara].” The Asahi Shimbun captured the general mood with this advice for Takahashi in its Vox Populi, Vox Dei column. “With the last Aum fugitive captured, Takahashi has a heavy responsibility to fulfill,” it said. “Namely, to come completely clean with the court and recount the cult’s madness in its entirety. That would be the least penance he could do for all the people he has made weep.”

KOLKATA: UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee, who has time and again sent feelers to Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee to back him, Saturday said there was no scope of meeting her now, though he would speak to her on the presidential polls if the need arose. Returning to the city after a day’s visit to his village Mirati in Birbhum district, Mukherjee said it was not possible now to speak to Banerjee, whohas so far stridently opposed his candidature for the top job. “When it will be necessary, I
will definitely talk to her," Mukherjee told media persons. The Trinamool, second largest constituent of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), is yet to announce its stand on the presidential choice after its preferred candidate, former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, declined to contest. Mukherjee is pitted against former Lok Sabha speaker Purno A. Sangma, who has the backing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as also the AIADMK and the Biju Janata Dal.
For Mujib, Gandhi was a magician NEW DELHI: Both Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Lord Mountbatten wanted to become Governor General of Pakistan, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wrote in his just-out memoirs in which he mentioned Mahatma Gandhi as a “magician” who had a great capability of casting an influence on people. Written during Mujib’s stay
in jail as a state prisoner between 1967 and 1969, The Unfinished Memoirs begins with his recollections of his days as a student activist in Kolkata in the run-up to the movement for Pakistan in the early 1940s. They cover the 1952 Bengali language movement, the first stirrings of the movement for Bangladesh independence and self-rule. The last notebook ends
with events accompanying the struggle for democratic rights in 1955. Describing about a time “when Muslims were being attacked every now and then” and an occasion when Gandhi did not speak to anyone or give speeches as he did on Sundays, Mujib wrote, “The Mahatma wrote something for the occasion and his secretary read it
out. The man was a magician. People cried out immediately, ‘Muslims and Hindus are brothers.' The whole atmosphere changed instantly." Mujib, who was was assassinated in a military putsch on August 15, 1975, cited another instance when rioters shied from violence after Gandhi told them that he would resort to a hunger strike if they did so. Violence intensifies as 100 more dead DAMASCUS: More than 100 people were reported killed on Saturday in violence across Syria, as Turkey played down Syria’s shooting down of one of its warplanes. President Bashar al-Assad meanwhile formed a new cabinet, but kept the key posts unchanged. NATO member Ankara acknowledged that one of its warplanes may have violated Syrian airspace after Damascus confirmed shooting down the F-4 Phantom on Friday. Its muted response however was seen as a bid to take the tension out of the latest rift between the former allies. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 116 people, 77 of them civilians, were killed in violence across the country on Saturday as regime forces stepped up attacks on towns. The Britain-based monitoring group said the civilians had been killed in the bombardment of rebel bastions. They included a family of six in Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria; a man and his three children in Kfaraaya, in the central province of Homs; and four members of the same family, including two children, in Hama, central Syria. Nineteen soldiers were killed in fighting with rebels, and 10 died among the rebel forces, the Observatory said. Another 10 soldiers were gunned down as they tried to defect to anti-regime forces, it added. On Friday, at least 116 people were also reported killed. The International Committee of the Red Cross condemned the killing of a Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteer, in the fourth such incident in the country’s deadly unrest. Bashar al-Youssef, 23, was shot and fatally wounded on Friday in Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, the two organisations said in a joint statement. Assad mean-

The Alaed, whose cargo has greatly troubled the West amid the spiralling conflict in Syria, is due to enter the Kola Gulf, which leads from the Barents Sea towards Russia’s Arctic port of Murmansk, on Sunday morning. “The ship is drifting in territorial waters, the entry into the (Kola) Gulf is expected at 6:00 am Moscow time (0200 GMT),” a Kola shipping control official told the Interfax AFP news agency.
China’s manual ‘kiss in Space’
Man puts himself up for sale on eBay!
BEIJING: A Chinese spacecraft today successfully completed the country's first manual docking in orbit, a milestone in an ambitious programme to build a space station. The Shenzhou-9 spacecraft manually linked with the Tiangong-1 module just over a week into a manned space mission which includes China's first female astronaut, following an automatic docking on Monday. "The first manual docking has been completed normally," mission control announced in a live broadcast on state television. The manual "space kiss" was the main goal of the Shenzhou-9 mission, testing the docking AFP technique essential to building a space station.
LONDON: In a desperate attempt to do something instead of cribbing over his likelihood of losing the job within a month, a father in Britain has decided to put himself up for sale on ebay for 20,000 pounds (around $31,000). EDITORIALS WE NEED NO MORE Rio summits It’s not been long since the Rio Plus 20 ended, but it has been already called “Rio Minus 20,” or “Rio Plus 20 Minus 40,” tellingly so by some of the participants themselves. Another epithet coined by Kumi Naidoo, executive director of Greenpeace, is “a failure of epic proportions”. Why is that? Experts point out that the final statement from Rio, The future we want, is nothing but 283paragraphs of verbose that “affirm,” “recognise,” “underscore,” “urge” and “acknowledge” every one of our environmental problems and the green initiatives launched to tackle it. It is said “reaffirm” has been used 60 times. But no new targets were identified, very few goals set and the absence of a strong resolution to do something to set things right was absent. The most deplorable fact is that Rio has not moved much from where it was twenty years ago, when the first Earth Summit was held there in 1992. What the outcome of the summit really affirms or reaffirms is the lack of resolve and vision of our leaders. If this the way the environmental dangers we are faced with today are to be dealt, we need no more Rio meets where leaders come, meet, greet and reaffirm, and say “see you” and leave. Some say, “The future we want” is “the longest suicide note”. There is no doubt about it.

Child sexual abuse: A bitter truth From the hip
SYED SHOAIB
M
anjadikuru, the Malayalam movie that opened to rave reviews this week, is the story of a fourteen-year-old girl abused in a Kerala joint family after being trafficked from Tamil Nadu. The core of the protagonist, Roja, winning awards even from far New York, lies in the truth of the character. Child sexual abuse is real, world over, more so in India. In the cloud of bigger crimes like rape and murder, this underreported crime on unaware youngsters is the cause for several grow-ups being ashamed of their bodies and sexuality, at a later stage. Many abused find it difficult to have normal relationships as adults because of a marred childhood history of abuse, sometimes constant. Bodily abuse of a child could be happening right now in our own family, to our own child! In menaces like this one and others, on children, we should not be looking for figures — if one in ten or ten thousand children are abused daily it should not matter. Because every individual child abused, physically or verbally is a traumatised future citizen with unexplained emotional baggage and untold fears. A lot of personality disorders are rooted in child abuse, sexual or otherwise. The abuser could be the neighbour, tailor, maid, bus driver, relative or teacher. Perpetrators of child sexual abuse come in all garbs. Lack of clarity about sex education, gradual transformation from joint families to nuclear units and being at the crossroads of traditional India and a booming Western culture has only created more adults and adolescents with confusion about ways to express their sexuality. If you care for the statistics, more and more children are being abused
daily in India, surprisingly, male children too. Pascal Mazurier, 39, from the French Consulate, has been accused by his wife of raping their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter in Bangalore, last week. The courts are recording an increasing number of cases in which fathers are allegedly raping young daughters in drunken stupor and female teachers are sexually abusing male children. In the United States, the recent case of Jerry Sandusky, a former football coach abusing young boys over a 15-year-period, opens our eyes to the enormity of the menace that is child abuse. Attorney General Linda Kelly observed in the case, “This is a crime that thrived in the darkness. It’s fed by fear, threats, shame and secrecy.” As responsible adults in a country with lack of proper education on sexual matters, we
need to educate our children about inappropriate behaviour; we need to explain use of discretion in a proper and improper touch. Young children need constant physical protection from strangers, intruders and the abuser. They also need to be told that they have not erred and that the mistake is with the adult. Back in my NGO days at Madhyam, a 50-minute documentary on child sexual abuse titled, My children who should be running freely through the vast open spaces educated me on how this crime has no economic or social barriers. It made me realise how incest has a global presence and punishment for child sexual abuse is not stringent, hence indirectly helping the adult pervert. Parenting is bigger responsibility than we know. A wronged child could later turn out to be a perpetrator of sexual crimes, like rape, accord-
ing to research. Studies also tell us that explaining to a child about biological changes will go a long way in helping her/ him understand and accept her/ his body better. Media clichés and wrong adult models are leading to a big number of abused children grow up into stressed people with misplaced aggression. Rampant domestic violence could probably be the result of untold and unexplained abuse in childhood. Growing crime itself is an example of an inappropriate past. We don’t need an Aamir Khan or a special programme like Satyameva Jayate to wake us up to a reality called CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE. We need to wake up before the innocence is robbed out of the childhood of many more children. The writer works for Postnoon.

ashtriya Ispat Nigam has sought deferment of the government’s `2,500 crore share sale, saying the employee morale was low after the devastating fire at the company’s Vizag plant that claimed 19 lives. The management wrote a letter to the ministry on June 22 requesting deferring the IPO as employees’ morale has touched a low after the fire that killed 19.

Pressure on EU for lasting remedy to sickly euro E
urope’s leaders gather for a mother-of-all-summits this week under intense global pressure to head off a potentially catastrophic economic collapse. Months ago already, EU president Herman Van Rompuy said in off-the-cuff remarks that the eurozone stood “back to the wall”, “at the edge of a cliff ”, “with a knife at its throat”. That was before the relentless two-year sovereign debt crisis wrecking much of Europe hit the unthinkable — infecting Spain, the eurozone’s fourthlargest economy, and threatening Italy, its third-largest, after earlier rescues of Greece, Ireland and Portugal. “An unwinding of the eurozone... would be the defining crisis of the entire century. It would be catastrophe,” Yves Tiberghien, of the University of British Columbia, said after G20 talks. “They created this great experiment,” he said of the 10year-old single currency shared by 17 vastly disparate nations. It was very daring but we know now it’s incomplete, it’s very dangerous, it doesn’t work, it’s not functional to do monetary union without banking union and fiscal union and therefore higher political integration.” At the summit, Van Rompuy, a former Belgian premier, will attempt to take the eurozone up that road. “I will propose building blocks for deepening our economic and monetary union so that we can show to the rest of the world and to the markets that the euro and the eurozone is an irreversible project,” he said. The EU’s first moves would be to kickstart growth and integrate Europe’s banking sector, he said. The lesson of the crisis, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, was “more Europe, not less Europe”. “We need to work closer together politically, especially in the eurozone. Whoever has a common currency must also have coherent policies. That is also a lesson from the last two years,” she said. Powerhouse Germany favours common taxation and
EU-wide retirement reforms mooted BERLIN: European Union president Herman Van Rompuy wants member states to look at changing the age of retirement to take into account longer life expectancy, Germany’s Welt am Sonntag reported on Sunday. “We can give recommendations to the Union as a whole, (saying) for example that there is a relation between the retirement and life expectancy,” he told the paper.
Greece sets bailout revision agenda ATHENS: Greece’s new government on Saturday said it wanted to review several austerity measures enacted for rescue loans and bargain for a two-year fiscal adjustment extension as it prepared for an EU-IMF audit. The aim would be to meet fiscal goals “without further cuts to salaries, pensions and public investment” and new taxes, it said, announcing a freeze on further civil-service layoffs, sales-tax cuts and longer unemployment benefits. AFP
budget policies —which would require treaty change — but is reluctant to share debt, unlike its traditional core EU partner France, which favours creating eurobonds. At the Brussels summit, the first of Rompuy’s “building blocks” is expected to be a proposal for a banking union, should he clinch a tough-toreach compromise over the role of the European Central Bank. “Banking union is a fundamental element,” he said. “I think we can move forward there more
quickly than in other areas.” Banking union would be a first step in a long-term roadmap to political union to be outlined to EU leaders by Rompuy, with dates and institutional problems such as treaty change set out by year’s end. EU diplomats said Rompuy had been asked to ready a detailed proposal for October, or possibly December. But a move towards Europewide guarantees on deposits and a central authority to close bad banks would both boost confidence and ease the flow of cash.
“Out of the chaos are emerging ideas,” said a senior EU diplomat. “It will be a political union at the end of the day.” Adding to the pressure, IMF chief Christine Lagarde said on Friday that “a determined and forceful move towards a complete European monetary union should be reaffirmed in order to restore faith in the system.” In the meantime, the IMF is leaning on a reluctant Merkel to allow the eurozone’s rescue fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, to lend directly
to Spain’s distressed banks, rather than to the government. This is in order to break a socalled “feedback loop”, where sovereigns face mounting borrowing costs when forced to help their own banks. Spain will formally request a eurozone loan for its banks on Monday. And the “men in black” inspectors from the IMF, ECB and European Commission return to Athens on Monday to check the state of play on reforms pledged in exchange for AFP a 130-billion-euro loan.

Leaving life to chance
It was touch and go for Rasika Dugal until she stunned audiences with her outstanding performance in Karan Gour’s Kshay. We find out more about this powerhouse of talent HEMANTH KUMAR
hemanth.k@postnoon.com Tell us a bit about yourself and how did acting happen? I was born and brought up in Jamshedpur. After my schooling, I moved to Delhi to study Mathematics at Lady Shri Ram College (LSR). Back then, I had the opportunity to act in a play which was directed by Anamika Haksar; however, I didn’t take up acting seriously. After college, I moved to Mumbai to study Social Communications at Sophia college which led me to work as a academic research assistant under couple of professors from MIT and Yale in Lucknow. They were trying to understand the co-relation between development and corruption in UP. Soon, I joined another research organisation Pukar and worked on a project on gender and space. After a point of time, I didn’t know
It’s tough for everyone who’s trying to make a career here because we are leaving life to chance. You have to make a choice. Sometimes you try very hard but nothing happens and sometimes it just takes a phone call to bag a great role.I acted in several tiny roles in lots of films including No Smoking and Agyaat, despite being advised not to do so. To be honest, I am very instinctive when it comes to making decisions. I took up whatever I got. One fine day, the roles stopped exciting me. Moreover, you hardly get screentime and the director’s attention is quite less too. That’s when Kshay happened.
How did Karan Gour approach you? What were your first thoughts when you read the script? Nikita Anand, who eventually played my neighbour in Kshay, had worked with Karan before. She suggested my name and I auditioned for the role. Karan is an interesting director to work with. Frankly, I had low expectations on how well it’ll do if it releases but I was very quite positive about how it was going to be made. Kshay was shot on an extremely low budget and we had to shoot in some of the dingiest locales in Mumbai. We shot the film over a period of two and a half years. On the other hand, I got the opportunity to spend a lot of time talking about the script with Karan. Since we were shooting in digital, we could experiment a lot more.
How did you prepare for the role? Did it affect you psychologically?
if I could grow in this field. That’s when I saw that FTII was introducing its acting course after 26 years. Since I had taken up a filmmaking course in Sophia college, I knew that I was interested in acting.
How was the FTII experience? Did it have a huge impact on you? I must say that the admission process itself was quite rigorous. Out of 500 people who applied, only 20 made it. It was a two year course and three months into the course, I knew that this was my true calling. It opened a whole new world for me and learnt a lot about improvisation.
Was it tough to find a breakthrough in the film industry after college?
I played the lead character Chaya, a housewife who becomes obsessed with a sculpture of Goddess Lakshmi and how it wrecks havoc on her life. Such roles are rarely written for actresses. It took me a while to understand the character and I had very little experience to build the full character. I was clueless in the beginning and I had to apply everything I learnt in FTII, acting workshops and films. Karan was extremely helpful too. Preparing for the role was more of a process. If you see the film, nothing much happens except for what Chaya thinks all the time. I am trying to understand the process and study the technique. I don’t like romanticizing my work.
You have got rave reviews for your performance in Kshay. What next? I want to be known for my work more than anything else. I have already finished shooting for my next Hindi film where I am playing one of the lead roles along with Irfan Khan and Tisca Chopra. I always find it tough to say no to people when I am offered a role. I just hope I have a long career in the industry and that’s a huge challenge for any actor.

An officer and a gentleman
It’s not every day that we come across war veterans who have served in both the British and Indian armed forces. Surungaram Subbaiah Naidu is a perfect example of what it means to be a patriot

gentle smile spreads across Surungaram Naidu’s wrinkled face as he enters the room. Though not dressed in a uniform, it is obvious from his demeanour that he comes from the armed forces and that age was just another number for the 88-year-old. I could not help but ask him what the secret to his personality is. To which he replies with a smile, “This how the British trained us. They trained us in such a methodical manner that till date we follow the lessons and principles we learnt.” When questioned about his journey began he says, “During a visit to the collector’s office I found myself attracted to a board which read ‘recruitments for the royal air force’. Within minutes I decided that this was what I wanted to be. I was scared that my family would not approve, and hence without their knowledge, I forged my uncle’s signature, who was a gazetted officer, and ran away from home when I was 19.” So did he prefer the British or the Indian command? Subbaiah said, “Both have their own charm. My first posting was in Andhra Pradesh under the Royal Air Force. My expertise back then was in weapon training. The British had the best guns and war weapons. As a part of the Royal Air Force battalion I was sent to fight the World War II. My memories with the British Air Force are still fresh. “After Independence I was a part of the Indian Air Force which was also a great learning experience. I was a part of the Indo-Pak war and there I used to assign groups and send the

pilots for operations. While the former gave us the required foundation, the latter was more of a transition (post Independence) — and hence comparison will not be right.” Going down the memory lane, he tells us how life was certainly not a bed of roses. “It was indeed a struggle; we would walk in the jungle for over 40 kilometres. We survived on packaged food, in fact, I remember days when there was no food and we survived eating ants and worms. That was the time when
we learnt about the importance of integrity and belongingness. In times like these there was no hierarchy; each had to take care of the other.” He further adds that being in the air force taught him the importance of living in a society and blending with fellow-beings. "In fact, with so many transfers we also learnt the importance of living as a family; we become each others support system. I remember during the wars we used to cover the windows with carbon paper to avoid light from seeping out. My children used to hide under the blanket and study. We would go out but were never sure of returning. However, on a positive note, we understood the strength each of us possessed and how our personality was enriched during these trying times." Talking about getting back in touch with his family, he informs us about the manner in which he met his younger brother. “One day when I was at the post office, I saw another boy
sending money order to the same address as mine. I wondered if he was my younger brother. I was hesitant in the beginning but I went up and then realised that he was indeed my younger brother,” he said laughing. He has a collection or coins and stamps which are enviable. During the World War II he met people from different countries and exchanged coins and stamps. This is how his passion developed. He currently possesses a massive number of coins and stamps, a few of which are so rare that they make us wonder if such a country ever existed. He is also the proud owner of a unique collection of pens which he is extremely possessive about, as he is about the bullet shells collected from war-sites. When questioned about the reason behind a large number of North-Indians in the military forces as compared to any region, he laughs and says, “It has nothing to do with the lack of love for the country rather it is the kind of mindset, I believe.” He then goes on to say, “It is from the school days that one requires to be trained — like asking students to be a part of organisations like the NCC. Most of the schools in Hyderabad do not have NCC. Through NCC we can inculcate values and the attitude to serve the nation.” The war veteran says that people should believe in themselves and do what they are passionate about. “It’s ok if one is not a part of the armed forces and can follow their passions but they should love and respect the country as well as its independence,” he concludes.

He works as an Engagement Consultant. His profession is concentrated towards bridging the gap between the two worlds and helping the artists by bring their

Hotels are always on the lookout for new art pieces for their premises or bands and instrumentalists to play for their events. I see all these venues as a start up point for artists to display their talents and passions,” says Russel.

Beauty in decay The Gutai group believes that the process of damage or destruction is celebrated as a way of revealing the inner life of a given material or object
T
he Gutai group (means “tangible; material; concrete”) was an artistic movement and association of artists founded (according to most sources) by Jiro Yoshihara in Japan in 1954. According to the official website of Shozo Shimamoto,
Shimamoto and Yoshihara founded Gutai together in 1954, and it was Shimamoto who suggested the name Gutai, which means “concrete” (as opposed to abstract/theoretical). Yoshihara wrote the manifesto for the Gutai group in 1956. Among its preoccupations, the manifesto
expresses a fascination with the beauty that arises when things become damaged or decayed. The process of damage or destruction is celebrated as a way of revealing the inner “life” of a given material or object: In addition to Yoshihara and Shimamoto, members of the
“For example, if one of my clients is good at a certain skill I talk to the company to see how they can make use of this skill into the betterment of their workplace. I have registered close to 50 artists from various fields ranging from candle-making to string quartets. I talk to the companies and figure out what they desire and accordingly I go through my database and put them through to the organisation. This bridges the gap between artists and corporates and once they earn their recognition they are self-sustainable,” he adds. Jamien Rao is one of the people who has been assisted by the Formations group. He tells us about the assistance he gained by approaching Russel and his team. “I run a company called JNRO we are into interior decorating and renovations. We also promote lots of freelancers and young professionals towards
artsy interior designing. The difference is that we focus more on using everyday articles like used bottles, old vinyl records etc and turn it into a piece of art which increase its value aesthetically. I didn’t believe in advertising to boost my company I preferred to have it advertised through word-of-mouth. When I approached Formations with my requirements they put my works of art and demonstrative models on their website and contacted a few organisations. Thus helping me increase my clientele and promoting my company,” says Jamien. Given that not everyone can afford an exclusive art exhibition to display their wares and not every band can open for Metallica in their first try, a few more companies of the same order might make the merger of both the worlds complete, which in turn will be a win-win situation for everyone involved.
ART FOR DUMMIES
Gutai group included Sadamasa Motonaga fr:Sadamasa Motonaga, Atsuko Tanaka, Akira Kanayama, and others. A formative influence on the later Fluxus movement, the group was also associated with certain European (particularly French) art world figures such as Georges Mathieu and Michel Tapié, and with tachisme (“art informel”). According to the Tate Gallery’s online art glossary, Gutai artists also “created a series of striking works anticipating later Happenings and Performance and Conceptual art.”

n unexpectedly warm period about 15 million years ago temporarily thawed Antarctica, turning the continent green around its edges, a new study says. Antarctica developed its ice sheets about 34 million years ago. But during the more recent warm period, the interior landscape would've resembled tundra found in parts of modernday Chile and New Zealand.

Thanks to technological advances, simple solar lamps go for as little as $10 to $20 each, and ones that have multiple brightness settings and an outlet to charge a cell phone don't cost much more. For daytime use, there are even cheaper options made of a plastic bottle of purified water and bleach, sealed into the roof.

THE PRICE OF NEGLECT
A small bog or a tiny patch of forest is an ecosystem in itself. Backyards or parks are good examples. But increasingly, our neglect is hurting these eco bodies RAMYA RAVI

O
ur well being depends greatly on ecosystems. So significant and crucial is this link that a decline in services directly affects the disadvantaged and vulnerable people first, then the rest of the populace. These are systems that we are an integral part of; the backbone of our existence that offers valuable services like regulating natural cycles, abating diseases.Yet we continue to plunder through and degrade them at an alarming rate. We consider food, air, water and timber to be ‘public goods’trade them as mere commodities. We don’t value them. With each passing day Garrett Hardin’s Tragedy of Commons gains relevance where unsustainable growth that puts immense pressure on resources making ‘public goods’ more. If this world was given an Aladdin’s lamp now, the Genie would probably say “Hey, I can only grant three wishes!” and he is right. We have climate change, and water scarcity, food insecuri-
ty, population growth, urbanisation, environmental deterioration, wildlife culling, creating environmental refugees in each situation and the list is endless. Which brings us to the most pertinent question, where is the evidence of the existence of such refugees? Not too far from where I live is a lake, home to a healthy population of cormorants, pond herons, coots, grey herons, egrets, frogs and toads, checkered and striped keelbacks. This lake serves as a typical example for several other lakes in the city, which supports the daily needs of neighbouring villages, not to mention the fauna that is endemic to these lakes. It is as picturesque as urban lifestyle choices can lend to a landscape. Garbage inside and outside the lake, burgeoning real estate eating into the lake’s shore, people competing for the same resources (water and small fish) and an almost damaged topography from the shrinking water table causing irreparable damage to the lake’s hydrology, water quality and biodiversity. While in the immediate future the fauna and the people of the village are the environmental refugees, in the long run with water tables dipping everywhere
UNLESS WE MAKE A CONSCIENTIOUS EFFORT TO CORRECT OUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT WE MIGHT FORGO THE VERY SLIM CHANCE OF RECOVERY THAT STILL EXISTS
the people of this city might find themselves refugees of their own myopic vision. Our water bills have started burning holes in our pockets already! Let’s flip the coin a tad-bit. Not too far from where I lived while working with an indigenous group, were the backwaters of Chennai, home to some of the wader birds — spot-billed pelicans, plovers, stilts and flamingoes. These waders maintain the balance of brackish
water ecosystem and their presence indicates its robustness, their decreasing population implies the opposite. While bridges have cut off the backwater’s connect to the sea, infrastructure advertised for its sea view invariably relies on these waters for support while decreasing the shoreline. So when waders abandon these waters it inadvertently means the ecosystem is collapsing leaving behind dry weak soil with no barrier to fend off rogue waves. Our environmental refugees here will have to pay double, possibly triple for basic water supply, while fully exposed to rogue waves. I shudder at the thought of how many such examples exist! Many such ‘urban’ ecosystems lay debilitated in developing countries like ours with little chance of recovery. Conservation can begin in our backyards and unless we make a conscientious effort to correct our attitude towards the environment, take policies out of books and implement them and start giving back in proportion to how much we take, we might forgo the very slim chance of recovery that still exists. Nature is priceless, but value attributed to it is often zero.

He mixes it and serves it hot with the rolls. This delicacy is absolutely scrumptious! Cost: `176 Location: Hotel Casa Luxurio, Road No: 4, Banjara Hills
CHOCOLATE DOSA
E
veryone’s heard of rava dosa, paneer dosa, aloo dosa and probably a dozen others. How about a chocolate dosa? IDP, once again, serves this unusual delicacy. While the dosa is made the usual way, the chocolate sauce, which they cook up in their own style, is a home-made recipe that is also a top secret! All the manager could say is that it’s cooked in a sweet batter and then topped with the delicious sauce. Cost: ` 59 Location: Idly Dosa People (IDP), Ravi Plaza, PG Road, Secunderabad

Chicken Sushi, Lamb Yakitori and Yasai Takia Wase...sound interesting? It most certainly is an adventure at Ohri’s Fareast, as they host a Japanese Food Festival.

J
apanese food by itself is an acquired taste, and only the brave have an appetite for it. While it may not be completely palatable for the ginger-garlic-onion-garam masala-eating kinds, it is an adventure indeed. Unfortunately, not many restaurants in the city, even fine-dining ones, boast of an all-out Japanese menu, and only a handful others serve sushi. Celebrating the Tepanyaki style of cooking, Ohri’s Fareast is hosting the Japanese Food Festival, with much pomp and fervour. From Sushi to Tempuras to Udon Noodles to piping hot soup for Japanese cuisine lovers, this is a welcome change. Served as part of the dinner buffet, the food festival has much to look forward to. So what if they don’t serve the traditional style of sushi? The tweaked sushi are amazingly good, if not better. I was looking forward for a really good
Meethi Chicken
Japanese dinner, and I found it. As any traditional meal in Japan goes, I started with a generous dose of Chicken Sushi as well as Vegetable Sushi. Now, I have had the ‘original’ sushi before, but I never quite enjoyed it. But this, well, it was bliss. The sticky rice rolled in seaweed and flavoured with wasabi sauce, and stuffed with the cooked chicken was really, really good, though very different from what one might perceive of a sushi. This was accompanied by Lamb Yakitori — well cooked meat in a soy sauce marinade, and grilled fresh right before your eyes. The sweet bitter taste was an experience in itself. Bracing myself, I headed for the soup. Soba Noodle Soup, it was called, with noodles and tofu in a dark broth. If you like the flavour of tofu, you will like this one. It was definitely fun slurping the noodles though. I had the prawns and avacado salad next. It was refreshing and the avacados mashed to give a rich, creamy consistency went brilliant with the prawns. For the mains, I had an option of Lamb Teriyaki and Yasai Takia Wase. While the first is more
heard of, the latter was something new—vegetables, mostly bok choy, in a flavoured gravy. Needless to say, the Lamb Teriyaki was really good. On the other hand, Yasai Takia Wase was for people who really know and appreciate, Japanese cuisine. The Udon Noodles were looking really good on the buffet and I grabbed a generous portion of it. Yes, it was good, and no, it wasn’t like any Chinese noodles that I ever had. Sprinkled with a generous dose of vegetables, it was oh! So yummy! Really, it was that good. Just when I thought this can’t get any better, we were served Tempura Fried Ice Cream— soft round sponge cake with a filling of vanilla ice cream, fried and sprinkled with chocolate sauce. I kid you not, I was craving for more... and the more I wanted, and more I got. Heaven. This treat was made by Chef Jojo, who has been called especially for the food festival. She is a master of the cuisine. If you think this buffet is only about Japanese food, you can’t be more wrong. It was a Chinese and Thai dishes as well, but the Japanese dishes stand out the most.

fter a string of flops in the past couple of years, Ileana is raring to make a comeback in Telugu. A lot is riding on the success of two of her upcoming films Devudu Chesina Manushulu and Julaayi. Both these films are going to hit the screens in July and we hear that she's sporting a brand new look in both these films. This is the third time after Pokiri and Nenu Naa Rakshashi that Ileana is teaming up with Puri Jagannadh and she had worked earlier with Trivikram Srinivas in Jalsa. Going by the buzz which both the films have generated, all eyes are bound to be on Ileana. At one point of time, she was the reigning queen of the Telugu film industry before the likes of Samantha and Kajal took over the pole position. If either of these two films manages to become a hit at the box office, Ileana can finally look forward to glorious days ahead. The question is whether lady luck will smile on her, at least this time?

The film’s principal shooting has already begun and more details about the film will be announced soon. Meanwhile, Navdeep will soon be seen in Shankar Marthand's horror film Poga, which is going to hit the screens later this year.

Brave is at its best when it’s smartly and charmingly changing what we think a Disney Princess can be, but it wavers when it tries to somehow reinvent what Pixar has previously done

verything about Brave is different from the Pixar norm, save the unequalled attention to detail and quality. The Disney-Pixar animated feature focuses on Princess Merida as she searches for a way to change her fate. In a journey of magic, adventure and family, the fiery Scot is launched into the ranks of the elite Disney princesses. Underneath the folk-tale
storyline lies the same life lessons that ring true for young and old. Though the movie heavily focuses on a mother- daughter relationship, it’s not just for girls anymore than Mulan was. Merida is a true Disney princess, with gumption, heart and an uncanny connection with nature. Brave is sure to be a hit at the box office, but Pixar’s slipping track record and a lack of repeat business won’t be very pret-
ty. The film lacks the trademark Pixar wit we’ve come to expect from the animation studio’s productions, and some humour feels shoe-horned in for the sake of having some laughs; the directorial kerfuffle that took place in the middle of production is not overwhelmingly obvious, but there is a distinct laugh of singular vision driving the film and its tone wavers throughout. Has Pixar outdone itself with Brave—No.
the name of your daughter has brought enormous media attention and therefore tourist promotion to the town and island of Hvar. Because of this, I have decided to confer on your daughter the status of honorary citizen of the town of Hvar,” said Major Pjerino Bebic. Blue Ivy was born in January 2012, but Beyonce decided her name months before while on vacation in Croatia with her husband.

n Illinois man who left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail. Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory. Unfortunately, he missed one letter and his note was directed instead to an elderly woman whose husband had passed away only the day before.
When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: DEAREST WIFE: JUST GOT CHECKED IN. EVERYTHING PREPARED FOR YOUR ARRIVAL TOMORROW. YOUR LOVING HUSBAND P.S. Maria Grozdeva (born June 23, 1972) is among Bulgaria’s most successful athletes at the Games, winning a total of five meda-ls in four Games. She picked up consecutive bronze medals in the 10m Pistol at Barcelo-na in 1992 and at Atlanta in 1996, but finally claimed gold at Sydney in 2000, where she won the 25m Pistol event and set a new Olympic record in the process.

THE
BASICS
Olympic Shooting events fall into three disciplines: Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun events. In Rifle and Pistol events, competitors aim at a 10-ring target from a set distance (10m, 25m or 50m). Depending on the event, athletes are required to shoot from standing, kneeling or prone (lying down) positions. In Shotgun events, competitors shoot at moving clay targets launched above and in front of them.
COMPETITORS

OFFICIALS
A range officer is responsible for the safe running of the competition. Athletes must listen to their instruction and obey their words of command at all times. An international jury is present at all events to ensure that shooters stay within the rules and to deal with any appeals.

ASHTON SETS RECORD EUGENE, OREGON: Ashton Eaton set a world record in the decathlon at the US Olympic Track and Field Trials on a wild Saturday that also featured a dead heat for a London Olympic berth in the women's 100 meters. Eaton scored 9,039 points in the 10-event competition, breaking the old world mark of 9,026 points set by Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic in 2001 and shattering Dan O'Brien's former American record of 8,891 from 1992. "There are few words to say to describe it," Eaton said. "To have that score and what I did, it's like I worked so hard to do that. It's hard to explain. I like running and jumping. To me, it's my whole world. To do the best I possibly could in my world makes me very happy." Eaton made himself the overwhelming favorite for the London Olympics by shaving more than four seconds off his personal best in the 1,500, his fifth event and 10th over two days. "I knew there might not be another opportunity so I had to make the most of it," he said. World champion Carmelita Jeter won the 100m in 10.92 to book her trip to London with Tianna Madison in second, but Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh finished in a dead heat for the third and final Olympic berth in 11.07 seconds. "I am just thrilled to have another shot," Jones said. Sanya Richards-Ross, seeking a 200-400 Olympic double with the world's best times of 2012 in both events, advanced to the women's 400m final. But Eaton, the local hero who grew up nearby and attended the host University of Oregon, was the biggest star, delighting the crowd of 21,795 at Hayward Field. Eaton took the final event, the 1,500 meters, in 4mins 14.48secs — a personal best by more than four seconds — for the 850 points needed for the world mark. "With 600 meters to go, I came to believe the Hayward magic exists," Eaton said. "I knew there was no way I was not getting the world record, largely because of the atmosphere in the stadium. Phelps mum over his Olympic plans OMAHA: Michael Phelps's plans for his Olympic finale will be clarified in the crucible of the US Olympic swimming trials, but until then, Phelps himself is giving nothing away. Phelps entered seven events in the eight-day meeting that begins on Monday in Omaha's 13,200-seat Century Link Center, but as of Saturday he wouldn't confirm if he actually planned to race the first event on his docket — Monday's 400m individual medley. Phelps has won it at the last two Olympic
Games, but after Beijing vowed never to swim the punishing event again in major competition. If he changes his mind, the first event of the trials could offer a showdown between Phelps and Ryan Lochte, who last year emerged with five titles at the World Championships in Shanghai — including 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley victories over Phelps. Lochte put his name down for a whopping 11 events at the trials, which do not include relays, but he, too, wasn't quite certain AFP what he would swim.
Sharapova admits representing Russia in the Olympics at Wimbledon next month will be a dream come true. Sharapova summed up the feelings of a host of top Wimbledon stars including Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Roger Federer, who are all thrilled to have the chance to play for a gold medal at the All England Club. The grasscourt Grand Slam event, which starts at the All England Club on Monday, will be followed by the Games just three weeks later as Olympic tennis returns for the first time since 1908. Sharapova just enjoyed one of the greatest moments of her career as she won her first French Open title to complete a career Grand Slam. She also enjoyed an unforgettable moment at Wimbledon in 2004 when, aged 17, she announced her arrival on the scene by beating Serena Williams in the final. But even those glorious memories will pale in comparison to carrying the flag at the Games opening ceremony and then taking part in the Games themselves for the first time. AFP

KRAKOW, POLAND: England will attempt to reach the last four of a major tournament for the first time in 16 years on Sunday as they face Italy in a heavyweight Euro 2012 quarter-final collision. The burgeoning confidence within Roy Hodgson’s youthful squad is tempered by the knowledge that England have rarely progressed beyond the last eight of major tournaments, with three quarter-final exits in the past 10 years alone. But after winning Group D ahead of highly-rated France and extending their unbeaten run to five games, England head into Sunday’s test in Kiev with a mounting sense of belief that

Spain sing: Xabi-dooby-doo

DONETSK, UKRAINE: Spain moved a step closer to an unprecedented treble of consecutive major international honours by beating France 2-0 in Donetsk on Saturday to reach the Euro 2012 semi-finals. Goals in each half from Xabi Alonso, on his 100th international appearance, sent the world and European champions into a semi-final with Iberian rivals Portugal in the same Donbass Arena stadium on Wednesday. It was Spain's first competitive win in seven attempts against France, who were bidding to become the first team to eliminate Spain from a major tournament since the French side that reached the 2006 World Cup final. While Spain can now contemplate the prospect of facing the in-form Cristiano Ronaldo, France return home after fulfilling their objective of

reaching the last eight, only to fall short against the world's top national side. "Is a quarter-final the level where France is at the moment? I don't know, what I do know is that the best sides will be in the semi-finals and France won't be," said coach Laurent Blanc. In an attempt to nullify Spain's attacking threat, Blanc opted for a conservative 4-5-1 formation, with right-back Mathieu Debuchy lining up in an unfamiliar right-wing role ahead of Anthony Reveillere. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque, meanwhile, elected to deploy Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas instead of Fernando Torres at the centre of a fluid attacking configuration. Abandoning their possession-focused approach, France retreated and allowed Spain to take the initiative, and Fabregas had an early penalty appeal turned down after his heels were clipped by Gael Clichy. With two right-backs on the pitch, France's right flank should have been impregnable, but it was from a move down the left that Spain went ahead in the 14th minute. Andres Iniesta released Jordi Alba and he held off the stumbling Debuchy to cross for the unmarked Alonso, whose downward header gave the number 14 a 14th international goal. The lead established, Spain slipped into their familiar passing rhythm and France were left to rely on the forward forays of
Blanc rues early goal but defends cautious tactics DONETSK, UKRAINE: France coach Laurent Blanc pointed to Xabi Alonso's early goal as the key moment in his side's 2-0 loss to Spain in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals, but stood by his tactical choices. Blanc unexpectedly introduced a fresh tactical formula in a bid to stifle Spain at Donetsk's Donbass Arena on Saturday, with a five-man midfield deployed in a bid to stifle the reigning world and European champions. Mathieu Debuchy lined up ahead of fellow right-back Anthony Reveillere in an unfa-
miliar right-wing role, as Blanc sought to nullify the influence of Jordi Alba and Andres Iniesta on the Spanish left. However, it was from that side of the pitch that Spain broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, with Iniesta freeing Alba to cross for Xabi Alonso to head home on his 100th international appearance. France improved after halftime, until Alonso's injury-time penalty put the game to bed, but Blanc said he was more frustrated by the early goal than by his side's failure to capitalise on AFP/ TW their chances.

their lead before half-time was a Gerard Pique header that looped well over. The start of the second half was similarly muted. Debuchy headed over from Franck Ribery's dinked cross, while Hugo Lloris had to race to the edge of his box to claw the ball away from Fabregas at the other end. Blanc introduced Samir
Nasri, Jeremy Menez and Olivier Giroud from the bench, but still the men in the all-white change strip were unable to capitalise on the promising openings they procured. There were few scares for Spain in the final 10 minutes, and they made sure of victory in injury time when Alonso swept home a penalty.
French see Spain loss as logical end PARIS: French media on Saturday delivered their judgment on France's 2-0 loss to defending champions Spain in their Euro 2012 quarter-final with the consensus the defeat was "logical". "A logical end for Les Bleus," was how l'Equipe sports daily saw the outcome on its website after France went down to a Xabi Alonso brace for their first competitive defeat at their southern neighbours' hands. L'Equipe saw the Spanish as easily the strongest team, as did France Football. "It was written" that France
would be eliminated, wrote francefootball.fr. France "put out a defensive starting eleven and the French team logically lost to Spain," wrote France football, admitting to disappointment after a good first round showing brought a draw to begin with against England, then a good win over Ukraine before a loss to eliminated Sweden. That defeat pushed France into a match-up with the Spanish instead of Italy and France Football said the overall showing left a feeling that was AFP "bitter, disappointing,”

Federer confident
Dave James
LONDON: Roger Federer insists he can still match Pete Sampras’s record of seven Wimbledon triumphs despite Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal having developed an iron grip on Grand Slam glory. Federer is fighting time as well as the unwavering dominance of Djokovic, the defending champion, and Nadal, who have won nine of the last 10 majors between them and contested the last four Grand Slam finals. World number three Federer, who celebrated the last of his record 16 Grand Slam crowns at the 2010 Australian Open, will be 31 in August. Sampras was 28 when he won the seventh and last of his Wimbledon titles in 2000. Adding to Federer’s headache is the knowledge that Djokovic is still only 25 while Nadal is 26. It wasn’t long ago that Wimbledon represented Federer’s
Group A
traditional bolt-hole, winning five successive championships between 2003 and 2007, then adding a sixth in 2009. But even in his London safe haven, the shadow of Nadal has
loomed large. The Spaniard, who has just collected a record seventh French Open title, deposed Federer in a five-set epic in 2008, having been runner-up in the two previous years. Federer’s last triumph in 2009 came when Nadal was sidelined with a knee injury. In 2010, Tomas Berdych knocked him out in the quarter-finals while in 2011, the Swiss lost his first ever Grand Slam match from two sets to love up when he was bludgeoned to defeat in the last eight by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Two months later, Djokovic overcame the loss of the first two sets, and saved two match points, to beat Federer in the US Open semi-finals. The Serb’s straight sets win over Federer in the semi-finals at Roland Garros earlier this month only served to darken the Swiss player’s mood. His Wimbledon chances weren’t helped by a loss in the Halle final to 34-year-old Tommy Haas.

Black Caviar makes it 22 at Ascot Julian Muscat
A
scot, United Kingdom: Black Caviar scrambled home to stretch her record to 22 wins from 22 races at Royal Ascot here on Saturday. The Australian superstar, ridden by Luke Nolan and trained by Peter Moody, edged the Group One Diamond Jubilee Stakes from French runner Moonlight Cloud. Black Caviar cruised down the Ascot straight and appeared to have the race in the bag when hitting the front and taking a two length lead into the last 200 metres. With Moonlight Cloud
and Restiadargent closing fast Nolan suddenly had to get to work to ensure the 16 favourite retained her unbeaten tag which she did but only by a head. An anticipated 10,000 Australians in the grand-
stand then held their collective breath as Nolen initially failed to respond to Moonlight Cloud’s challenge. However, as the winning post loomed Nolen telegraphed his misjudgement when he became animated in the saddle. He pushed hard on the reins for the last two strides but by then the damage had been done. It was as well for the over-confident jockey that Black Caviar’s head was fully extended as she reached the wire. But for that, Nolen’s antics might well have cost Black Caviar her unbeaten record - not to mention his reputation in the saddle.
