oles in the police team defeat the works of CCTV. This has come to light in the case of the incidents of vehicle torching to stoke communal violence in the Old City, police have now admitted.
ACP Charminar, M Ram Mohan Rao says that the South Zone police, with the help of CCTV footage and an informant, had managed to zero in on the main culprits in the Ghansi Bazaar incidents on Monday morning. The police identified one Bunty Tiwari, said to be an activist of the Viswa Hindu Parishad, who led a team of three to set fire to the vehicles. CCTV footage and a police informer helped to single out the trouble-makers but by the time police reached their home, Bunty had received the tip-off
and slipped away, Rao said. Bunty is a resident of Ghansi Bazaar and he was allegedly involved in similar crimes in 2010 also. According to the informant, Bunty and a group of men had gone around setting fire to six cars. The informant told the police that Bunty had hired three people for the work and paid `20,000 to each. The ACP said that two special teams were formed to nab them. A source confided that a head constable is believed to have tipped Bunty off. The police arrested all of them later on.

ith the slogan, Telugu Kanabadali (Telugu should be seen (everywhere) and Telugu Vinabadali (Telugu should be heard (everywhere), the government released a Government Order in this regard. The State is following Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which have made their local language the official language. To promote Telugu, the government has recently appointed Mandali Bhudda Prasad (right) as chairman of the Official Language Commission. Speaking to Postnoon on Friday, Prasad claimed credit for pursuing the long-standing demand to make Telugu mandatory for public communication. “I am proud to say that this is my first victory as the chairman. Many more things need to be done to boost our language,” Prasad said. He revealed that his next
release of Government Orders in Telugu and undertaking all secretarial work in Telugu is my cherished goal. But these initiatives require some time to become a reality. We will look into it after the conclusion of World Telugu Conference,” he said. According to Prasad, he is taking all these initiatives to keep the importance of Telugu intact and to retain its rich culture for the benefit of future generations. The World Telugu Conference is the next mega event to be organised in the State after last month’s CoP-11 biodiversity conference.
course of action would be to make Telugu compulsory in schools. “Very soon, the State government will issue orders to all schools, both government and private, to make it mandatory to teach Telugu from Class I to Class X. MUST FOR BUREAUCRATS The chairman has also made public his plan to ensure that all bureaucrats, especially IAS and IPS officers, are able to communicate in Telugu. According to Prasad, it is very essential for bureaucrats to speak Telugu as their duties involve direct interaction with the public. He said that while IAS and IPS officers from other states are showing keen interest in learning Telugu, bureaucrats belonging to the State are showing scant respect for their mother tongue.

hey call it the first schoolchallenge of its kind. Creya Learning launched its two day “Creya Ignited Minds Challenge” on November 23, an inter-school talent competition where 120 children from over 20 schools participated. The first day was a run-up to the actual competition, which is scheduled to take place today. Six students from each school, along with a designated teacher, took part in the boot camp that prepared the children for the next day’s actual challenge. All the students were enthusiastic and took an active interest in gearing up for the next day’s challenge, which included things as complex as bevel gears, designing a tractor tilling system, learning how to use photo editing software and such. “It is nice that there is such an organisation that helps students think laterally. At their age, our children are exposed to many things but they need the right kind of channeling to make them productive. Creya is helping them learn beyond the pen-and-paper boundaries of academics,” says a teacher from
Gitanjali High School. Director of Creya Learning Terry Rust said the notion of learning should be a fun experience. “These children are really happy learning things these way. I believe education and learning should be made this way.” But while Creya might be
making waves with private schools and for those who can afford such education, do they also wish to enter the wider field of education, which includes state-sponsored government schools? Datla V Reddy, co-founder of Creya Learning, said, “The ini-
tial idea actually began when we sent three guides to three schools across Haryana and Andhra Pradesh. The idea of catering to the larger sector in education such as state-sponsored schools, aided schools and government schools has been there but it will happen gradualDEEPAK DESHPANDE
ly as the state of infrastructure and other facilities too need to be revamped and expanded.” About the school challenge, Praveen B Voudagiri, co-founder of Creya Learning, said, “We have had an excellent response, and we are expecting the same tomorrow. A judging panel comprising academicians, senior IT and software heads and artists will work with us and decide on the winner.” One of the participants, Mohammed Ataur Rahman, a Class VIII student at All Saints’ High School, said, “ I had a very nice experience learning at the camp here. We learnt a lot about gears and other mechanical devices. I only wish we had a little more time to learn about the functioning of the motor.” Another participant, Mohammad Asrar Ahmed, was as enthusiastic, “I cannot wait to take on the challenge tomorrow. It has been an interesting experience to meet other school students of our age group and interact with them while learning new things.” The coaches at Creya too had positive things to say. Apurva Ayyagari, a coach said, “ It was as much an interesting experience for us as it was for them.”

T
wo cases of woman committing suicide due to dowry harassment have come to light recently. The first incident was reported at Indra Nagar of Langerhouse where newlywed G Swapna committed suicide by hanging herself. The victim, Swapna, 23, was married to a driver, G Erraiah, only five months ago. At the time of marriage, her parents had given her in-laws gold, silver, cash and other valuable articles as dowry. A few days after their marriage, her husband and in-laws began demanding money from her in the name of dowry. They would also beat her up. It is alleged that she was mentally and physically harassed whenever her parents were unable to fulfil her inlaws’ demands. Depressed, she took this extreme step. It is being said that Swapna had informed her parents about the harassment earlier also. Her parents had then spoken to her in-laws and promised to fulfil their demands within the short period. Despite their assurances, they continued to harass her. Her husband, Erraiah, is now unemployed and would get drunk and beat her up regularly, the police said. The Langerhouse police have
booked a case against her husband and her in-laws. Investigations have begun in this manner. The second incident was reported from Vikarabad, Ranga Reddy district. A women, M Ramlamma, committed suicide by setting herself ablaze. She received severe burn injuries and died in the hospital while undergoing treatment for the burns, the Vikarabad police said.

PM declines BJP demand CBI director posting
PRIME MINISTER MANMOHAN SINGH ON FRIDAY DECLINED THE BJP’S
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday declined the BJP’s demand to keep in abeyance the appointment of Ranjit Sinha as new CBI director and also termed it as “wholly unwarranted and devoid of any merit” its “insinuation” that his appointment had been rushed before the Lokpal Bill could be passed. BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley wrote a letter to the PM and said the government had chosen to appoint a new chief of the CBI hours before the select committee on Lokpal tabled its report in the Rajya Sabha. In his reply to Jaitley, the PM said the present CBI chief, AP Singh, is due to retire on November 30. And even the government makes every effort to push enactment of the Lokpal Bill, the premier investigating agency cannot be left without an administrative head in the meantime. “The insinuation that the appointment was made to pre-empt the procedure recommended by the select committee is wholly unwarranted and devoid of any merit. I also refute the suggestion that the appointments to this post in the past by the UPA government were motivated by collateral considerations,” the prime minister said in his reply, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The select committee on Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011 tabled its report in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. Sinha was on Thursday appointed as the next director of the CBI for a two-year term. Sushma and Jaitley, said the

According to the Lokpal select committee report, the collegium for appointment of the CBI chief includes the prime minister, leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha and the chief justice of India. “We must record our strong disappointment and disapproval of this act of the government. We would request you to revisit this matter and keep this appointment in abeyance till such time this recommendation (of appointment through collegium) becomes a law of the land. Hopefully, this can happen in the next few days,” the letter, signed by the two BJP leaders, said. Jaitley is the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Sushma Swaraj his counterpart in the Lok Sabha. Minister of state for person-
nel V Narayanasamy defended the government’s move and said the selection of CBI chief had been done in a fair manner. He said that Sinha was the senior-most officer among the three names suggested by the central vigilance commissioner to the PM. He said the BJP was not behaving as a responsible opposition and believed in “my way or no way”. Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit said the select committee report had just been tabled in Rajya Sabha but there was no certainty about the timing of passage of Lokpal Bill considering the present stalemate in parliament over foreign direct investment in multibrand retail. He said the bill’s passage might even take three months and the post of CBI chief could not remain vacant for that long a period. Ranjit Sinha is a 1974 batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre and is director general of Indo-Tibetan IANS Border Force at present.

Morsi insisted on Friday that Egypt is on the path to “freedom and democracy” after granting himself sweeping powers, which sparked clashes between his supporters and foes and raised concerns abroad. “Political stability, social stability and economic stability are what I want and that is what I am working for,” he told a gathering of fellow Islamists outside the presidential palace. Morsi opponents began a one-week sit-in in Tahrir Square -- the symbolic heart of protests that toppled Hosni Mubarak last year -- and called for a mass protest on Tuesday. Clashes erupted between police and protesters near the square, with demonstrators setting fire to a police truck, witnesses said. And violent confrontations erupted between Morsi supporters and foes in the canal city of Suez and the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, where protesters ransacked the offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which the president was elected in June. Under a declaration read out on television on Thursday, the president “can issue any decision or measure to protect the revolution... EDITORIALS PASS PENDING anti-graft bills People laugh these days when government — state and central — make tall promises about stamping out corruption. It’s like a part of our lives, something that our nation cannot do without. When we put this issue into perspective, we realise that we all play a role in sabotaging the efforts to eradicate this curse that has dampened a few good people’s efforts to make a difference. Of course, there are corrupt officials who would not do their job unless they get their share, and among the general public there are many who would not mind an odd hundred or five hundred or a thousand to get things done, quicker and smoother. Though the majority of the latter is slightly ashamed about their role in entrenching corruption, there are those who are vociferous defenders of the practice who retort: “How else can things be done here!” And so we settle for it, bit by bit, with or without the knowledge that we are slowing down our country from getting to the point of greatness that eminent people say is our rightful future. You may laugh if you hear our leaders are doing something about corruption. Apart from the Lokpal and Lokayukta bill, there are at least nine bills proposed and tabled, but yet to be passed by our esteemed representatives in the House. We hear it’s going to be a chaotic winter session, thanks to the disagreement among parties over foreign direct investment. The Prime Minister had plans of trying the dinner diplomacy on the main Opposition, the BJP, but to cancel it following the death of Bal Thackeray. After the brief lull in the war of words between them, things are heating up again. So, if you don’t think it too much of a trouble, would you, gentlemen and ladies in the House, kindly pass some of those anti-graft bills, please?
Kasab, closure & karma Soul Curry SUMAA TEKUR
A
s India woke up to the news of the hanging of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008, citizens, especially Mumbaikars and those who experienced irreversible personal loss during the attacks, were again forced to deal with a mix of strong emotions that resurfaced. There was hurt, anger, grief, disgust, sorrow, and now, after hearing of the news of Kasab’s hanging, maybe relief. The 24/7 breathless coverage of TV new channels repeatedly mentioned the concept of ‘closure’. Kasab’s hanging, they suggested, would make the kin of those who lost their lives in 26/11 find at least partial relief in the justice they believe had been served. One such survivor of 26/11 said on national TV that she “erupted with joy” at
the news she woke up to, on Wednesday. She was happy and wanted to celebrate, and then she broke down. Had she found her closure? Although Kasab is the face that came to be associated with the enemy who perpetrated the terror attacks on innocent Mumbaikars for four relentless days, it’s difficult to imagine that the families of those 166 victims, and many other survivors, would be hinging on Kasab’s fate to deal with their own agony and hurt. Four years is not a very long time when it comes to dealing with the loss of a loved one. But in four years, those who were affected would have taken their first steps toward healing and moving on and away from the painful memories of the attacks. So did Kasab’s death bring relief and closure? Closure is usually a process, and hardly a one-time emotional investment that improves a situation. The mixed reactions of the kin of victims and survivors of 26/11 suggested that they were all at different stages of that crucial process of closure. Those who invested emo-

But those who disconnected themselves from Kasab’s trial and dealt with deeper spiritual issues of forgiveness, compassion and love tended to speak of the larger problem of terrorism and how Kasab’s hanging doesn’t end the problem. That said, all of us have our own unique mechanisms to find closure to situations that are beyond our control, and to
which we have no choice but to accept and move on. Some of us secretly expect an apology though we may say we don’t. Those last words of Kasab promising in the name of Allah that he will never do such a thing again, would have been like a flood of relief washing their troubled souls. Every one of us finds a spot for emotional and spiritual closure in which we release the pain and toxic memories that prevent us from forming new, positive relationships. We unload the burden and set ourselves free. We can do this by asking for forgiveness, or by forgiving or by coming to terms with a difficult situation through constant communication. We know we have found closure when we remove ourselves from the process and let fate decide the future course. In doing this, we end the cycle of karma related to that event. To many Mumbaikars and Indians, Wednesday was perhaps the day a karmic cycle ended. It might have also brought them closer to their goal in the pursuit of emotional closure.

ovelist Philip Roth’s decision to lay down his pen despite seemingly good health and his formerly unstoppable production at the age of 79, has stunned US literary circles. The low-key announcement first appeared in the French cultural magazine Les Inrockuptibles and was missed by many in the United States, where Roth was one of the country’s “literary lions,” as The New York Observer said. Then the news gradually spread, prompting surprise and some skepticism. “It’s surprising, given his obsessive habit of constantly working,” said Ross Posnock, a Columbia University professor who wrote the 2006 study, “Philip Roth’s Rude Truth: The Art of Immaturity.” Posnock told AFP there could be a good reason behind Roth’s decision to quit, even if at some level he could go on. “Artistically, I think it makes

sense. I don’t think that (his recent work) is as strong at all as some of the works of the 90s, for instance Sabbath’s Theater, or Human Stain,” he said. “They required so much energy and concentration that he probably doesn’t have that left.” But Posnock echoed other commentators, like The New Yorker’s Adam Gopnik, who think Roth may be eating his own words soon.
“IT’S A BIT LIKE HEARING THAT KEITH RICHARDS HAS GIVEN UP ROCK AND ROLL, OR THAT THE POPE IS ABANDONING RELIGION,” CRITIC JAMES WALTON WROTE IN BRITAIN’S DAILY TELEGRAPH. “I never expected him to retire... but I have a suspicion he may un-retire. I can’t imagine it being easy for him not to write,” Posnock said. The speculation over Roth reflects his stature on the post-World War II literary scene,
with writing that was at once comic, sincere, satirical and provocative. He hit stardom in 1969 with Portnoy’s Complaint, a sexually explicit comedy about a young Jewish-American obsessed by masturbation and his mother, and took off on a decades-long career. “He is probably the greatest American novelist since Faulkner, in my opinion. Harold Bloom says it too, I’m sure many people say it,” Posnock said, referring to the renowned literary critic. “He liberated a certain American vernacular... similar to what Salinger did in The Catcher in the Rye, bringing out a vernacular of American idiom, but in Roth’s case more obscene, Jewish, urban, that had never really been heard before.” The grandson of Jewish immigrants from eastern Europe, Roth grew up in Newark, New Jersey, and his own life and Jewish background were constant sources of material for his fiction. The Observer said “he is the Jewish-American writer,” although at the same time “he made Jewish fiction mainstream, allowing Jewish writers
to focus on something other than just being Jewish.” That ability to escape being pigeon-holed and the universality of his message best explains Roth’s success. As far back as 1962, literary critic Orville Prescott wrote in The New York Times that “Philip Roth writes out of his passionate interest in his fellow human beings.” Five decades later, with his books taking up entire shelves
in libraries, his retirement is “not just a sad blow, but also as a genuine shock,” critic James Walton wrote in Britain’s Daily Telegraph. “It’s a bit like hearing that Keith Richards has given up rock and roll, or that the Pope is abandoning religion.” All that remains to be done: “Give Philip Roth a Nobel Prize as a retirement present,” Walton said. What twitchers are to birds, glitchers are to films. They have already claimed 24 in Skyfall. In the fight on top of the train, for example, Mr Bond starts off in black lace-up shoes and ends in elasticsided boots. The mistake, if such it be, that has attracted the biggest intake of breath, though, is the appearance of a number 38 bus in Whitehall. Some habits of this shy and elusive bus remain unknown to science, but experienced bus-ecologists have never known it to extend its territory southeast of Piccadilly. Yet 24 blunders are nothing in the statistics of free-frame continuity. The Wizard of Oz is said to boast 310. Dorothy’s basket is particularly troublesome, spilling its contents and regaining them from shot to shot with no concession to the laws of physics. t is often said that it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.Following this principle, Sharat Chandra, who chose to do something rather than crib about the education system in India, started a small hobby centre in 2005 that gives a practical and hands-on learning experience. Over time, that hobby centre evolved as Butterfly Fields in 2008, one of the premium organisations for handson learning, training 5 lakh students in South India. Chandra, the founder of the company, is a chemical engineering graduate from IIT-Mumbai. He began his career as an associate consultant with KPMG. However, the seeds of entrepreneurship were sowed during his PGDBM course at IIM Ahmedabad. “As part of the course on entrepreneurship, we were taken to business enterprises across Gujarat. Most of the founders of these companies were school drop outs but has still managed to build business empires. I was struck by their sheer creativity despite their negligible academic qualifications. “I still remember what my professor, Sunil Handa told us,‘You students are highly educated and will later move to US and UK or work for a MNC and contribute to
the growth of western economies. However, our country’s growth is driven by these entrepreneurs’. His words really got to me and that’s when I decided to do something for my country,” said Chandra. The IIM graduate got the inspiration for his business in Germany when he was there as part of an IIM exchange programme. “I was amazed by the integration of hands-on learning in education system. Students there spend half of

It’s different here, where students memorise, write exams and then forget,” he said. The government of Germany highly subsidises education. Owing to our economic conditions, this is not possible in India. So what can one do to introduce such a learning experience without a large investment? This question bore heavy on Chandra’s mind and after his return from Germany and he put to place his idea of introducing such a system back home. “It was my IIM professor Sunil Handa who pushed me to start the centre. I had given up on the idea and asked him ‘What can I do?
Education is in the hands of the government. Only a minister can bring about a change in the system’. Professor Handa explained that it is such questions that keep change from taking place,” Chandra recalls. It was then that he came up with the idea of a hobby centre. The centre ran purely on passion rather than revenue. “I was working as a consultant and ran the hobby centre in West Marredpally during weekends. We showed children what the inside of a television looks like and the concepts used in functioning of TVs and other products. The idea was to make them understand that the world is built on the concepts that they are taught on blackboards,” he said. Chandra soon quit his consulting job after and began working full-time on the Centre after he started receiving more and more inquiries from schools thanks to a newspaper article on his work. Despite many challenges, there has been no looking back for Chandra after he started working with schools. The company has introduced new activity-based tools and started improvising with the feedback they get from students. Every child gets an opportunity to do 80-90 activities with the help of around 300 components by the time they finish secondary school. This not only helps them become better engineers, but also makes them more creative and confident individuals. Chandra is certain that this will churn out a sizable bunch of ‘not just talkers, but doers’ by 2025. The company does not only concentrate on private schools, but also works with government schools and takes activity-based learning to underprivileged children. “This is not only philanthropic, but also helps us increase our bottom- line earnings. Ordering large volumes decreases the cost of activity kits. This will also help increase profits from private schools,” he says. Butterfly Fields started off with an investment of `1 lakh and has seen an exponential growth of around 137 per cent in revenues since inception. On breaking even, Chandra says, “We used to invest or hire people based on what the amount we generated from the centre. It is only after raising the `5 crore venture capital fund that we started investing heavily on robust growth.” The company has plans to raise another $5 million by adding one new region (zone) every year.

Shopping made easy
A survey by the research firm IDC indicates that some 48 million shoppers will “showroom” during the upcoming holiday shopping season, up 134 per cent from a year ago. Rob Lever
A
nyone with a smartphone can now be a savvy cybershopper for the holiday season. With mobile Internet and apps, it is easy for someone in a store to compare prices on specific items, and then make a quick decision to buy or leave or to instantly make a purchase elsewhere. This is called “showrooming,” a practice which traditional retailers dread, and which is surging with the spread of smartphones and tablets. A survey by the research firm IDC indicates that some 48 million shoppers, or about 20 per cent of the US adult population, will “showroom” during the upcoming holiday shopping season, up 134 per cent from a year ago. IDC predicts showrooming will influence up to $1.7 billion in holiday retail purchases. Big ticket items will be the most showroomed items this year, according to IDC, especially consumer electronics. But the survey showed people also compare prices for apparel and footwear, and use phones to get information and consumer reviews of products as they shop. Various mobile apps, such as Amazon’s Price Checker and the TGI Black Friday app, make it even easier for these consumers — and more challenging for retailers. “The real bane for the retailer is the independent price comparison apps,” said Greg Girard, analyst at IDC. Girard said some price-sensitive shoppers are asking retailers to match prices on their smartphone apps. “The majority of the people were reluctant at first to ask for a better price, but they were more likely the next time if they succeeded the first time,” he said. Others said the impact of “showrooming” is still unclear. Yankee Group research director Sheryl Kingstone said the consultancy found that for big-ticket electronic purchases such as TVs, 73 per cent purchased in-store instead of online.
R
oughly half of US adults now own a smartphone, and about a third have tablet computers, according to market watchers. A study by research firm Edgell Knowledge Network with eBay Local found 80 per cent of US retailers will be impacted by showrooming, losing five percent of sales on average.
“However, in-store smartphone usage is still a disruptive force and should not be ignored,” she said. “Fortyone per cent of smartphone owners have used their devices to compare prices.” “Once consumers start using their smartphones for shopping they tend to use them a lot — typically for 50 to 60 per cent of their store shopping trips, depending on the store category,” said a report from the Deloitte consultancy. But physical-store retailers are fighting back. Wal-Mart, for example, has its own mobile app which allows customers to connect in stores to their network and buy items not in stock at the store. The company says 12 per cent of mobile
sales come from customers who are in the stores. “We’re confident about products and pricing, and we actually think showrooming is a good thing,” said WalMart spokesman Ravi Jariwala. “Our store managers are empowered to do what they need to do to satisfy customers on price. And we’ve invested a lot in our mobile technology to empower customers in store, including letting them see an expanded selection from Walmart.com.” Other retailers, including Target and electronics giant Best Buy, also invite showroomers to ask for price matches. Macy’s is reserving its best promotions on “Black Friday,” the big shopping day after Thanksgiving, for consumers using the store’s mobile app, which aids in navigating the department stores. IDC’s Greg Girard said that savvy retailers may be able to outsmart some smartphone shoppers if they use technology well. “It means consumers are delaying their decisions until they’re in the store,” Girard said. If a consumer uses a store’s smartphone app and then logs into the in-store Wi-Fi, the retailer will have data on the customer’s shopping habits and may be able to determine the right promotion for that person, said Girard. A report by the GroupM Next consultancy found that customers are more likely to make a purchase if they interact with a salesperson and that some customers can be swayed even if they see a lower price. Girard says some retailers may benefit from the transition. “People like to shop in stores,” says Girard. “And stores with a good assortment and trusted and knowledgeable sales people are well equipped to handle the showrooming shopper.” Girard said the showrooming trend may serve to separate the good retailers from mediocre ones. “What showrooming does is it amplifies the risk of not being a good retailer,” he said. ext-based passwords are no longer safe. Period. Most people don’t use passwords that are more than 10 characters long, so they can be cracked within a couple of hours provided they have a powerful PC with them. That being the case, let’s take a look at some of the alternatives to traditional passwords — each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
This system, also known as twostep authentication, has been around for a while now and is used commonly by most corporates. It has become common among normal users too when email service providers such as Gmail and Yahoo started providing such an authentication via SMSes. The system is good, but the problem is that you’ll be locked out of your system if you lose your phone.
of users and tries to verify if it is the right user or not. The thinking behind the method is that different people type different passwords at different speeds. So if a system uses BioPassword for protecting data, the user not only has to type in the right password but also type it at the same or similar speed always. The company is pitching this as an alternative to the traditional two-factor authentication system. However, critics of the method point out that typing speeds change depending on the device, keyboard layout and various other factors. They point out that such changes could lock users out of the data they own.

In Windows 8, for example, you can use your spouse’s photo as the login screen and draw a triangle connecting eyes and nose to login. Microsoft expects this system to be very popular among its users, but some questions have been raised about the way Microsoft
handles the concept. According to certain security experts, the method is not secure enough, though we haven’t seen any hackers exploiting this loophole as yet.
BIOMETRIC
You have seen it in movies and it might very well become the norm in a few years. A lot of laptops available in the market now come equipped with fingerprint scanners which, if coupled with retina scans, could make for a very secure system. The fingerprint scanner in laptops, on its own, however is not very secure, but some of the standalone fingerprint scanners which take accuracy to a new high make up for this deficiency. The issue with this method is that users will need to invest in new hardware for the sake of safety and
this additional cost is the only reason this method has not taken off yet despite being around for more than a decade.
ACTIVE
AUTHENTICATION
This concept was developed by DARPA and is a combination of biometric security and the biopassword system being marketed now. The system is very costly to deploy as it would require multiple sensors to identify if the person attempting to access the data is the right user or not. The method uses “you as the password” and literally so, as it judges your typing skills, fingerprint, does a retina scan and stops short of taking your stool sample. It is the most secure system as of now, but it is also the least practical. However, if you are ultra-paranoid about security, you should try it out.

The Shire’ll not be the same The producers of The Hobbit movies recently rejected allegations by Peta that animals died on set during the making of Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated Tolkien trilogy in New Zealand.
A
nimal rights group Peta recently said that up to 27 animals, including horses, sheep, goats and chickens, died during filming The Hobbit movies, prompting it to plan protests against the movies, the first of which has its world premiere in Wellington next week. Director Peter Jackson and the producers said in a statement that the American Humane Association monitored all use of animals during the shoot and “no animals died or were harmed on set during filming”. “The producers completely reject the accusations that 27 animals died due to mistreatment during the making of the films,” the statement said. As per published reports, several animal wranglers employed in the production allege that the New Zealand ranch near Wellington where Peter Jackson’s production company housed and trained the critters had “death traps” in the form of bluffs, sinkholes and broken fences that resulted in a number of euthanisations. Among those was a pony named Rainbow who was used as a Hobbit horse. According to the wranglers, Rainbow came running off a bank in the hilly area and crashed, breaking his back. He ended up having to be put down, while another horse was found dead after falling over a

bluff and ending up submerged in a stream. Yet another mount named Doofus sliced his leg on some fencing but managed to survive. “Extraordinary measures were taken to make sure that animals were not used during action sequences or any other sequence that might create undue stress for the animals involved,” said the producers’ statement. It added that 55 per cent of shots featuring animals in the trilogy, which has a budget estimated at US$500
million, were computer-generated. Peta said former wranglers who worked on the production reported two horses died from broken necks after being run off embankments and another was illegally “hobbled” with its legs tied together. Peta US senior vice-president Lisa Lange said sheep and goats died from worms and after falling into sinkholes in rugged ter-
rain, and a dozen chickens were mauled to death by dogs. “This production’s decision to use numerous live animals and allow them to suffer needlessly takes the entertainment industry a giant and disgraceful step backwards,” she said. Jackson gave the British heir to the throne a personal tour of his Weta Workshop special effects studio in Wellington, which will host the world premiere of his new film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey later this month. Charles is reportedly a major Tolkien fan and British media cited Palace sources as saying that he was “very much” looking forward to seeing the prosthetic hairy feet used by star hobbit Bilbo Baggins. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am — the best birthday present I’ve had in a long time,” Charles said, after examining the props used in Jackson’s movies.

ne of Australia’s best selling and most popular authors, Bryce Courtenay, who shot to prominence with his first book The Power Of One, has died aged 79, his family said on Friday. The South Africa-born Courtenay, who moved to Australia in the 1950s and sold more than 20 million books, had been suffering from stomach cancer and died at his Canberra home on Thursday. “We’d like to thank all of Bryce’s family and friends and all of his fans around the world for their love and support for me and his family as he wrote the final chapter of his extraordinary life,” his wife Christine said on Facebook. Courtenay’s biggest success was The Power of One, about a young English boy raised during the apartheid era in South
Africa. It was made into a successful film starring Stephen Dorff, John Gielgud and Morgan Freeman, with James Bond star Daniel Craig appearing in his first major screen role. Courtenay came to novels late in life after years of working in the advertising industry, with The Power of One, published when he was 55 and selling eight million copies. Another one of his books titled April Fool’s Day was a non-fiction account of the death of his son, Damon, from AIDS, contracted from a blood transfusion to treat
haemophilia. In an interview with the Australian media, Courtenay said writing that account was the hardest thing he had ever had to do. He wrote it as part of Damon’s dying wish to dispel the myths surrounding HIV/AIDS at the time. It was by Damon’s bedside that Courtenay had begun writing The Power Of One at the age of 55. He went on to write 21 books, including The Potato Factory, Tommo & Hawk, and Solomon’s Song. Courtenay did not let his fight with cancer slow him down, with his final book, Jack of Diamonds, being released this month. He knew he was dying and in
a moving final video clip to accompany the book, he said: “This is my last book because my use-by date has finally come up and I’ve probably got just a few months to live. I don’t mind that,” he added. “I’ve had a wonderful life. “Part of that wonderful life has been those people who have been kind enough to pick up a Bryce Courtenay book and read it and enjoy it and buy the next one and be with me in what has been, for me, an incredible journey. All I’d like to say is, as simply as I possibly can, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.” His long-standing publisher at Penguin, Bob Sessions, paid tribute to Courtenay as “a born storyteller”. Courtenay is survived by his second wife Christine, and his children Adam and Brett. His son, Damon, AFP died in 1991.

Gaining Control Looking at the big push toward mobile gaming and casual gaming and what’s happening with the Nintendo Wii, women are slowly entering the gaming industry. Their numbers are few but there is hope for change.

F
emale representation in the creative industries has always been a topic for debate. Take the gaming industry in India for example. It has predominantly been a male-dominated one. So much so that hearing of a women gamer or developer in India has been few and far in between. We spoke with two women from the industry to know of where women stand in this field. Purnima Iyer, game designer at Knowledge Adventure India (Bangalore) and Cofounder at Pinaka Interactive (Navi Mumbai) gives us an insight. On the industry she says it is a fledgling one. “It is great, still growing and has a long way to go. Innovation and quality is what we need to focus on. We should help each other out, share knowledge, promote and grow together,” she says. Numerous questions come to
mind talking about women in the gaming industry, ‘Is the profession suitable for women? What are the timings? What about male co-workers, family etc...?’ Answering all these questions, Moumita Paul, a game designer at Lakshya, Pune says, “This profession has a lot of potential for women. There is a whole lot of different things to be done and not just gaming. There is testing, designing, production and developing and women can be a part of all this. Women have a flair for the creative, however, production has its limitations in terms of family because of the long hours.” Purnima adds that most companies do have flexible hours and work-from-home options. For Moumita, getting into the industry was met with opposition from her mum who was concerned for her. Her mother stopped speaking with her, but Moumita persisted and finally won her over. On the behaviour of men in this industry, Purnima says, “It can be quite

subjective, some do some don’t.” But Moumita feels otherwise, “At least at work, men are very welcoming and supportive as there are very few enterprising women. In fact, most of them are surprised that a woman could be part of the programming or developing.” But the bone of the contention still remains the portrayal of women. Moumita who is also an avid gamer, agrees that mostly women are given sexy avatars in games. “Women are mainly designed to be hot and sexy as that’s how the men prefer them to be.” Purnima adds, “There are games which portray women as the damsel in distress who has to be rescued by the male protagonist;
but then that is the case with most fairy tales too! There are games where the women are portrayed as equals. Whether they are the protagonist (Lara Croft, Bayonetta) or feature as a supporting protagonist (HalfLife 2). Many RPG (Role-playing Game) and RTS (Real-TimeStrategy) games give you the option of creating a woman character and building woman units respectively. Then of course is the question of objectifying and sexualising the women. To that, we have games like Portal where the playable character Chell, was not sexualised.” But what both women seem to agree is on the lack of awareness and false concepts regarding a career in this field. At the NASSCOM Game Developer’s Conference this year in Pune the Women in games panel, announced the formation of a Women in Games Special Interest Group, which will help attract more women to the field. Moumita advises that all the women out there who are looking for a chance should do their research first and then enter this field. Half-baked notions can be dangerous.
Making a joke of freedom of speech All About Eve AMY ROSE THOMAS
N
ever in her wildest dreams did 21-year-old girl Shaheen Dhada think that her post on Facebook questioning the Mumbai shutdown after the death of Shiv Sena head Bal Thackeray will land her in prison. But she did, along with her friend Renu Shrinivas for ‘liking’ the comment. Both the girls were granted bail soon after they furnished personal bonds. Shaheen Dhada was quoted as saying after the incident, "I'm not angry, I'm not sad, but I'm just shocked. It was just my point of view, I'm shocked that it was my post because of which all this happened.” Shaheen also apologised for the post because, she said, she did not want to “hurt anyone's sentiments”. This is not the first time India supposedly the largest democracy has shocked the world by putting its commitment to freedom of speech out of the window. It was only last month that 46-year-old businessman Ravi Srinivasan from Pondicherry was put behind bars for criticising Karti Chidambaram, son of Indian finance minister P Chidambaram on Twitter. This shows that the political hotshots are manipulating the system which puts the democracy of the country to shame. Especially youngsters treat their Facebook accounts as their friends and post their random thoughts. There is no reason to believe that these comments are anything but their point of views and arresting them for the same, sends the wrong message to the youth. This scenario is in complete contrast to the law that prevails for the politicians. People governing the country abuse and at sad occasions even manhandle each other in parliament while keeping others under a tight leash. Is it time we cease calling our country a democracy?

RELATIONSHIPS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2012
I AM ALL EARS
I
am 25. My boyfriend and I share a great relationship but our only problem seems to be jealousy. Sometimes we get over it, sometimes it leads to a huge row. Of late, these little things have been nagging us and conversation becomes too awkward. How can I bring things back to normal?
N
euroinformaticians from Radboud University Nijmegen provide a mathematical model for efficient communication in relationships. Love affair dynamics can look like a sinus wave: a repetitive oscillation of highs and lows. The studies show that the 'relationship-sinus' depends on the time partners take to form their emotional reactions towards each other. Source: Science Daily
Dear worried kid, Jealousy can run aground the strongest of relationships. In your case, you are lucky as both of you have accepted your faults and are making a conscious effort to overcome it. What you must understand is that showing attention to somebody else than each other should not be a problem. How a person is looking or talking to your partner is immaterial as that is another individual’s doing.
ENABLING CAIN Let’s face it, competition and inferiority complex can be an explosive combination in any individual. And especially if you have a sibling, there is bound to be competition and sometimes it may just turn ugly.

ratricide. The term, refers to the act of a person killing his or her brother and if it’s a sister it becomes sorricide. But few realise the magnanimity of these terms. Taking a person’s life in any way ultimately amounts to murder. Religion and mythology have some stories of sibling rivalry turned ugly, namely Cain and Abel and Romulus and Remus, why, even we have an animation movie on the same subject, The Lion King, where Scar kills his brother Mufasa, aiming to get the throne. In all these stories there is one common thread — it’s jealousy and inadequacy that caused these individuals to take such drastic steps. We recently had a Bollywood-style battle played out in front of us in the capital. A liquor and real estate baron and one of India’s most power-
ful businessmen, Gurdeep Singh Chadha, also known as Ponty Chaddha was reportedly killed by his younger brother Hardeep, who was also killed in the shootout. The reason being that younger brother Hardeep sold off a property without informing Ponty. The two met at a farmhouse in New Delhi and just opened fire, if eyewitnesses are to be believed. Another example would be characters in popular series on television, Vampire Diairies — Damon and Stefan Salvatore. Elder brother Damon is forever angry with younger brother Stefan and later ends up falling for Stefan’s girl. Years of pentup jealousy and animosity lead the brothers to duel to death after the death of their love interest Katerina. They end up killing each other and turn into vampires. The animosity makes an appearance now and then, in their life afterwards. Let’s face it, competition and
In every family, you have an achiever and an under-achiever. The under-achiever is the one who is living off the privileges of the other. Dr Yamini Welsley inferiority complex can be an explosive combination in any individual. And especially if you have a sibling, there is bound to be competition — for love, toys, attention, marks, clothes, praise, success and the list is endless. This can be seen as healthy competition but if not taken care, it can turn into something much more unhealthy and violent. There’s healthy rivalry, where competitiveness
helps kids improve. Then there is another type of sibling rivalry that is plain unhealthy. This unhealthy type of rivalry can affect family harmony, destroy relationships and harm the child's self-esteem. Sibling rivalry that shows itself through fighting is one to be taken note of. Property has, more often than not, been the root cause of sibling rivalry. Ponty Chaddha’s death comes six years after BJP leader Pramod Mahajan was killed by his younger brother Pravin. Greed and an injured ego had led to the drastic killing. Pravin felt Pramod with his authority and success was humiliating him, as he was allowed direct access to his brother. Also Pramod was helping him financially. Pravin had left the house in April 2006 to end all family disputes but the night turned out otherwise. Dr Yamini Welsley, director of Insight Psychological Ser-
vices, Secunderabad, explains the nature of sibling rivalry and why they end up being so. “Sibling rivalries stems from personalities. Every person has different abilities. If one were to notice, then in every family you have this case of the achiever and the under-achiever. The under-achiever is always the one who is living off the privileges of the other. In some cases emotions of jealousy and inadequacy spring up making them do a lot of harm. This is what one could term as a behavioural malfunction.” What parents can do if they spot relationships between their children go sour is, take care not to encourage one over the other. Dr Yamini goes on to say, “Parents should try and build the child’s self-esteem and their confidence. Love, in the end can override all these negative emotions. If the parental bond and the sibling love is strong, it will not result in such calamities.”

Gupta earlier directed Vidya in No One Killed Jessica. “It’s a pleasure to work with Vidya again. Vidya is one of the best actresses we have. In Ghanchakkar, Vidya plays a character that she has not explored before. She is a brilliant actress and a wonderful human being. She simplifies everybody’s job,” Gupta told IANS. Ghanchakkar is a comedy, featuring Emraan Hashmi opposite Vidya. Emraan plays an ex-conman. Giving out a few details of the movie, Gupta said: “Vidya plays a housewife in the film. She is one actress who can pull off any role. Ghanchakkar is a quirky comedy. We have finished 80 per cent of the shooting. We have been shooting in Mumbai and a major portion of it was shot in Chembur.” The movie is slated to release on June 21, 2013. Gupta says viewers must watch the film for Emraan and Vidya’s chemistry. “I only visualised Vidya and Emraan for this film ever since we started scripting. It’s a very unusual pairing and both of them are doing a fabulous job. Their chemistry is looking awesome on screen,” said Gupta. The movie is Gupta’s third film in a row with UTV Motion Pictures after Aamir and No One Killed Jessica. The film has music by composer Amit Trivedi, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya. IANS

Halle Berry’s ex arrested after brawl
H
alle Berry’s ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry was arrested for investigation of battery Thursday after he and the Oscar-winning actress’s current boyfriend got into a fight at her Hollywood Hills home, police said. Aubry, 37, was booked for investigation of a battery, a misdemeanor, and released on $20,000 bail, according to online jail records. He’s scheduled to appear in court December 13.
Aubry came to Berry’s house Thanksgiving morning and police responded to a report of an assault, said Los Angeles Police Officer Julie Boyer. Aubry was injured in the altercation and was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released. Emails sent to Berry’s publicist, Meredith O’Sullivan, and Aubry’s family law attorney, Gary Fishbein, were not immediately returned.
Berry and Aubry have been involved in a custody dispute involving their 4-year-old daughter, Nahla. The proceedings were sealed because the former couple are not married. Both appeared in the case as recently as November 9, but neither side commented on the outcome of the hearing. Berry has been dating French actor Olivier Martinez, and he said earlier this year that they are engaged.

or four years now (at times, it’s felt like an eternity), the Twilight films have coasted along on basic anticipatory questions: What would it look like if a sweetly sulky high school girl fell for a vampire who resembles James Dean crossed with a pasty-faced indie rocker? What would happen if the two of them made love? If they got married? If they had a baby? That most recent question was answered by the uncharacteristically queasy, nearly Cronenbergian horror of last year’s Breaking Dawn — Part 1, which leaves just one more big question, really: What happens when Bella Swan becomes a vampire? The Twlight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, the final chapter in this saga of bloodsucking teenage swoons, gets the answer to that one
out of the way fast. Bella’s eyes turn red and gaze hungrily at human flesh, her skin sparkles (for about five seconds), she does some of that Road Runnery fast-motion travel — and beyond that, Kristen Stewart acts more or less the way she always has, with an engaging fusion of ingenue vulnerability and flashing-eyed I’m with the undead Leader of the Pack! empowerment. In Breaking Dawn — Part 2, Bella slips into vampiredom as if it were a set of designer clothing she’d always been meant to wear. With her transformation nimbly accomplished, here’s the real final conflict: Bella and Edward (Robert Pattinson) now have a baby girl, who they’ve given the slightly hilarious name of Renesmee (it’s funny because it
sounds just la-di-da enough to be a contemporary baby name bestowed by an actual celebrity couple). And this means that they’re in deep trouble, since the Volturi, the powerful coven that enforces the laws of the vampire world, won’t allow a bloodsucking child to exist. It appears that vampire kids, at the age that they “turn”, become far too reckless, going on rampages that threaten to expose their fellow vampires. So the Volturi must destroy them — and, for good measure, their parents too. But wait! Renesmee isn’t a full-fledged vampire; she’s a half-breed. And so Bella and Edward decide that if they can reach out to Edward’s vampire comrades from around the world, collecting a team of “witnesses’’ to attest to the fact that
Rensenmee is not, in fact, immortal (and therefore not dangerous), they can save her, and rescue themselves, from the wrath of the Volturi. The whole gathering-up-of-witnessess plot sags in the middle. One of the pleasures of Breaking Dawn — Pt. 2 is Michael Sheen’s moreunhinged-than-ever performance as this archly civilized but always naughty fascist. Sheen rules the screen with his evil-in-the-House-ofWindsor diction, kitschy giggle, and frozen double takes. Breaking Dawn — Part 2 starts off slow but gathers momentum, and that’s because, with Bella and Edward united against the Volturi, the picture has a real threat. It’s structured as a classic monster-movie showdown, and when the two are standing with their ragtag rebel team in the Northwest snow, facing Aro and his monk-hooded Volturi army, the film takes off — into eye-popping violence and spectacle, complete with fantastic decapitations, and also into a rather touching all-for-one mythology.

Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play Kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the voucher from VENKEY’S VEG Restaurant, Nampally number 11.

Schumacher faces finale When the 43-year-old parks his Mercedes in the team garage this Sunday, he will begin his second retirement.
Hamilton sets Brazil pace, Vettel edges Alonso SAO PAULO: Lewis
SAO PAULO: In the expected tumult of the championship celebrations that will follow Sunday’s championship-deciding Brazilian Grand Prix, one man will linger, take it all in and make a quiet, dignified exit. Michael Schumacher, veteran of 305 Grands Prix starts, 91 race wins and seven world championships, will bid farewell to a sport he has graced, upset, laced with controversy and at times turned into a processional march through the record books. Three seasons after his return to the sport and after rarely reproducing the speed and aggression of his years at Jordan, Benetton and Ferrari,
FOR THE F1 FRATERNITY, EVEN THOSE ABSORBED BY A POTENTIALLYTHRILLING FINALE TO THE SEASON BETWEEN LEADER SEBASTIAN VETTEL AND ALONSO, SCHUMACHER’S LAST RACE WILL BE EMOTIONALLY CHARGED. Schumacher will bid goodbye. But he will do so knowing he has created moments of drama and delivered hints of the talent that once burned so brilliantly.
“This time round, I will be able to pay more attention to my farewell and hopefully savour it too,” said Schumacher, when asked to reflect on his feelings ahead of his final race. “I have had fantastic years in Formula One and a lot of support from fans around the world, and I wish to particularly thank them for that. “Of course, I would be happiest if I could say goodbye with a strong race and I am sure we will be doing everything we can to make it happen.” For Schumacher’s fans, as in 2006, there is an air of disappointment about his exit because it has come not by choice, but circumstance.
Hamilton continued at Interlagos on Friday where he left off in Texas last Sunday by setting the pace in opening free practice for this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix title showdown. On a day of soaring heat and rising tension, the 27-year-old Briton clocked a best lap time in one minute and 14.026 seconds to outpace defending champion German Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull. Vettel, who leads the title race by 13 points ahead of Sunday’s finale, only needs to finish in the top four to become the youngest triple world champion in Formula One history. His only rival for the title, two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, was fifth fastest, separated from the front pair by Vettel’s Red Bull team-mate Australian Mark Webber and his own inform Ferrari team-mate and local hero Felipe Massa. Vettel was three-tenths of a second slower than Hamilton while Webber, Massa and Alonso were so closely matched that they were separated by just 0.007 seconds at the end of the afternoon session.
Bolt targets Commonwealth gold With the Games scheduled for 2014, he has set himself an earlier target too, that of 100m gold at the world championships in Moscow next year. BARCELONA: Olympic champion and world record holder Usain Bolt now wants to add Commonwealth Games gold to his medal haul after the Jamaican superstar revealed on Friday that he intends to run in Glasgow in 2014. “I don’t think it will a problem with my schedule,” said the double-triple Olympic champion who has never raced in a Commonwealth Games. The 26-year-old, however, admitted his first priority was to reclaim his world 100m title he lost to compatriot Yohan Blake in 2011 after being disqualified for a false start in the final. “For 2013, the objective is to go as fast as possible and win the 100m title at the world championships in Moscow,” he said.
Greene backs Bolt to lower 100m record BARCELONA: Former Olympic 100m champion Maurice Greene believes Usain Bolt will lower his own 100m world record of 9.58sec, which the Jamaican has held since the 2009 world championships in Berlin. “I don’t think we’ve yet seen the best Bolt, capable of being perfect from the start to the finish,” said Greene, who won the 100m at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Nadal to make Abu Dhabi, Doha return DOHA: Rafael Nadal (below) will end his six-month, injuryenforced absence from tennis by playing back-to-back tournaments in the Gulf before launching his assault on the Australian Open. The 26-year-old Spaniard hasn’t played since his shock second-round defeat against Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June. He was then diagnosed as suffering with Hoffa syndrome, an inflammation of the fatty tissue in his left knee, a problem that has sidelined him several times over the years. Nadal was unable to defend his Olympic title, missed the US Open, the ATP World Tour Finals and Spain’s defeat to the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup final. He will first play alongside Djokovic in a three-day exhibition in Abu Dhabi from Dec 27-29.
Tennis coach jailed 8yr for raping pupils LYON, FRANCE: A French court on Friday convicted a top French tennis coach of raping two under-aged girls he was training more than 20 years ago and sentenced him to eight years in prison. Regis de Camaret ran a tennis training camp at the plush Mediterranean resort of Saint Tropez in the 1980s and early 1990s and counted former Wimbledon runner-up Nathalie Tauziat and former French national champion Isabelle Demongeot among his pupils. Prosecutors had been asking for a sentence of 10 to 12 years. The court also banned Camaret, 70, from any professional activity connected with tennis. Camaret, who sat stone-faced as the verdict was read, was ordered to be sent directly to prison. Demongeot was among those who filed complaints AFP against Camaret.

in Mumbai MUMBAI: India were dismissed for 327 in their first innings on Day two of the second Test match against England, here, today, adding just 61 runs to their overnight score of 266/6. The pitch at Wankhede seems to have been prepared to suit Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s demands of a wicket which turned as England’s Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann played spoilsports to India’s party taking nine wickets between them. Panesar, who scalped the prized wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag on Friday, added Ashwin’s wicket to his tally to finish with figures of five for 129 while Swann claimed four for 70 including the wicket of Harbhajan Singh which also happened to be his 200th. On a pitch which was clear-
achin Tendulkar’s poor form with the bat continued as the master blaster was dismissed for a meagre score of eight, raising questions about his presence in the team, once again. The Mumbai lad has been under the scanner since the past few months as there are many who believe that it is time for him to hang his boots. But his disappointing display has not deterred fans from making their way to the stadium. Wankhede Stadium witnessed a decent crowd turn-up.
ly turning since the beginning of the match, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin were the only players who made England slog before perishing to the spinners in the morning. Both the players kept rotating the strike and put up 111 runs for the seventh wicket partnership.
Harbhajan Singh flicks a delivery down the leg side in a determined knock of 21, which helped India to a healthy 327 all out against England on Saturday, the second day of the second cricket Test in Mumbai. SRINIVAS SETTY Pujar, who carried forward his brilliant form from the previous match, fell to Swann’s spin as Prior completed the dismissal by uprooting the stumps, with the batsman ending his innings of 452 minutes, on 135. Ashwin, who was the only other player to score more than 50, did not last more than nine
overs today morning, bringing an end to his innings at 68. Harbhajan Singh who came in place of Ashwin, scored a quick fire21 which included two fours and a six before being trapped in front of the stumps by Swann. India’s innings came to an end with the controversial dis-

South Africa make late recovery
Samuels hits 260 as WI take control
South Africa were in deep trouble earlier after losing five wickets in the morning session, putting them in danger of conceding a big lead.
KHULNA, BANGLADESH: Marlon Samuels
ADELAIDE: South Africa were all out for 388 in reply to Australia’s first innings 550 at tea on the third day of the second Test at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday. Debutant Faf du Plessis was caught in the final over for 78. It was Australia’s morning on the third day in Adelaide with pacemen Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus sharing four of the wickets, including the prized scalp of Proteas skipper Graeme Smith for 122. At lunch, South Africa were 273 for seven and trailing Australia’s 550 first innings by 277 runs with debutant Faf du Plessis on 26 and injured Jacques Kallis not out 11 batting at number nine. Kallis gripped his tender right hamstring after ducking several testing Siddle bouncers nearing lunch. But the Australians had problems of their own with paceman James Pattinson
leaving the field for scans on a side strain. The Proteas went into the third day at 217 for two but quickly unravelled, losing three wickets in four overs to expose the tail. Offspinner Nathan Lyon kicked it off when he enticed Jacques Rudolph to drive only to be caught by Rob Quiney at short cover for 29 to give Australia a breakthrough inside the opening half-hour. Siddle grabbed Smith’s key wicket in the next over when the Proteas captain was caught behind by Matthew Wade for 122. Smith immediately sought a referral and after a lengthy delay by the TV umpire the decision was upheld much to the Proteas skipper’s disgust after the review’s Hot Spot infra-red imaging system detected a faint edge. The Australians were delighted at the dismissal ending Smith’s 244-ball century with 14 fours and leaving the Proteas still 118
runs in arrears of the follow on. Smith has proved a lucky charm with his tons for South Africa. The Proteas have not lost the match in the previous 25 Tests in which he has scored a century. Fired-up Siddle struck again trapping AB de Villiers leg before wicket for one to leave South Africa in serious trouble at 240 for five. There was no sign of champion allrounder Kallis following his hamstring injury on Thursday and fast bowler Dale Steyn came out to bat at number seven. Steyn lasted 15 balls before he played away from his body to Hilfenhaus bowling with the second new ball and was snapped up by Ricky Ponting at second slip for one. Hilfenhaus sent Rory Kleinveldt’s off-stump cartwheeling out of the ground for a duck, signalling the arrival at the wicket of Kallis, batting at nine.

smashed a magnificent 260 to guide the West Indies into a commanding position against Bangladesh on the third day of the second and final Test in Khulna on Friday. The 31-year-old Jamaican notched his maiden double century, putting on a 326-run stand for the third wicket with Darren Bravo (127) and another 177 for the fourth wicket with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who ended the day 109 not out. Denesh Ramdin finished not out on four. The run-feast gave the West Indies a healthy 177-run lead over Bangladesh’s first innings total of 387 -- a position of strength from where they will look to force a series win after taking the first Test in Dhaka by 77 runs. Samuels thrived on a lifeless pitch before being caught at point off a rising delivery from paceman Rubel Hossain, falling just one short of Ramnaresh Sarwan’s 261 not out -the highest by a West Indian batsman against Bangladesh -- made at Kingston in 2004. The right-handed batsman hit 31 fours and three sixes during a dominating 455-ball knock. The seasoned Chanderpaul was not left far behind, as he reached his 27th Test hundred in the dying moments of the day when he steered spinner Sohag Gazi for a single towards mid-off, following up on his 203 not out in the first Test. The 146-Test veteran has so far hit ten fours and a six off 206 balls. The Samuels-Chanderpaul stand also improved the previous best for a fourth wicket against Bangladesh, erasing the 176-run stand involving Samuels and Sarwan.

SAO PAULO: Time ran out for Brazil coach Mano Menezes on Friday when he was sacked as coach of the five-time world champions, the country’s demanding football bosses deciding he was incapable of delivering a sixth title. Born in the southern Brazilian city of Santa Cruz do Sul on June 11, 1962, Luiz Antonio Venker “Mano” Menezes was a modest defender who plied his trade at amateur level. His first club was Rosario, a club in Rio Grande do Sul run by his father. Despite his technical limitations, Menezes demonstrated strong leadership capacity, a trait that would lead him to embark upon a coaching
career that started in 1992 in the lower regional leagues. A restrained character and a man of few words, Menezes would eventually land his first big job with Gremio in 2005, leading the team to the final of the Copa Libertadores where they were defeated by Boca Juniors. He then took charge of Corinthinas, guiding them back into Brazil’s top tier in 2008 before claiming the Brazilian Cup a year later. With Brazil qualifying for the 2014 World Cup as hosts, the team has to rely on friendlies — 25 in all — to stay match sharp. Nine wins were achieved in 2012, but many were against AFP modest opposition.

Clattenburg will return to action this weekend after being cleared of racially abusing Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel, the Premier League announced on Friday. Menezes sacked as Brazil coach
(right) was preparing today (Saturday) to take over as Queen Park Rangers manager, saying he was relishing the challenge of dragging them off the bottom of the English Premier League. Redknapp was immediately in talks with the west London club after they sacked Mark Hughes on Friday, following a miserable run of results that has left them as the only club without a win in English league football this season, 12 games in. Former Tottenham manager Redknapp intends to be in the stands at Old Trafford later Saturday as QPR visit secondplaced Manchester United, with Hughes’ assistants Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki in charge for the match. “I’m hopeful we can get it done,” Redknapp told Sky Sports television on finalising a deal. “There shouldn’t be any problems.
