Woman consumes acid

n what could be described as a typical filmy style vendetta, a City youth who went to reach a compromise with the family members of a man who was murdered by his brother, was thrashed so severely that he died in a few hours. What was even more shocking was that a City

hospital refused him treatment and asked the relatives to take him elsewhere. The worried parents rushed the boy to another hospital nearby where he was declared ‘brought dead.’ Mohd Sadiq Pasha, 23, of Hafizbaba Nagar was just an undergraduate. His elder brother Mohd Chand was involved in the murder of one auto driver Kaleem and has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment. As Pasha’s parents feared reprisal from Kaleem’s kin they sent their son to strike a com-

promise with the victim’s family. Accordingly, Pasha went to Kaleem’s house in Singreni Colony along with his other brother Mohd Usman on Tuesday night. When Pasha was offering apologies and seeking a compromise Kaleem’s father and his four sons lost their temper and started beating the boy and hurling abuses at him. When he fell unconscious someone informed his parents and they rushed the boy to a nearby private hospital in

Champapet where they were advised to shift him to a ‘better equipped’ hospital as he had deep and severe injuries calling for immediate surgery. The hapless relatives rushed him to another hospital where he was declared dead, said Saidabad suinspector D Vishnuvardhan Reddy. Mohd Usman escaped with injuries. After the death of the boy, irate people attacked the first hospital. Police have booked Kaleem’s brothers for attack and murder.

Both my dad, who is a religious man, and my name have Shirdi Sai Baba’s name. n Any particular reason for your ODI shirt number being 36 considering that May 8, 1983 is your birthday. Most people take their birthdate —Dhoni takes number 7 for example. It was given to me. My father said I should keep it, even though I could have had it changed. n When will you play your first 20-20 match? I don’t really know, for selection is not in my control. n What about your test debut? I hope to get selected sooner than later. n Who is your favourite leg spinner? ecent political developments in the ruling Congress party seem to be taking its toll on incumbent APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana. There is a clear indication that Botsa will be removed from his post by the party high command for his failures in tackling many crucial issues. The names of many Congress leaders are doing the rounds to succeed him. Prominent names include former PCC president D Srinivas, Rajya Sabha member K Chiranjeevi, APCC general secretary Abid Rasool Khan and agriculture minister Kanna Lakshminarayana. The chances of D Srinivas seem better as he has been credited with bringing the party back to power for two consecutive terms. Going a step ahead, senior leader and MLC P Venkata Rao requested the high command to appoint him as APCC president in case there is a need for a replacement. Veerappa Moily, Ghulam Nabi Azad (who is now the Congress AP in-charge) and Vayalar Ravi have reportedly expressed their displeasure over the functioning of Botsa and the series of allegations against him. Botsa’s tenure as APCC president has been marred by many controversies and allegations. His name cropped up in the sensational liquor syndicate probe by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) and led to a huge outcry by the opposition political parties which demanded his immediate resignation. Botsa added fuel to the fire by saying that his entire family is involved in the liquor business and questioned the criticism of opposition. Apart from this, Botsa’s name also figured prominently in the massacre of people belonging to the Dalit community in Lakshmipur of Srikakulam district. But, the PCC president denied these allegations. He is also vocal in criticising the CM albeit indirectly, especially on the issue of gas allocations to Maharashtra from KG Basin.

NEW DELHI: In the wake of widespread discontent on the social media over its decision to block certain Twitter accounts, including that of journalists, the government on Friday clarified that it was taking action only against sites that “can cause damage”. Twitter, after not initially responding to government requests, has agreed to block six sites impersonating the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Following fake messages about the Assam violence, home minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Friday said that social media accounts which have posted objectionable and inflammatory content are being blocked but there was no censorship. “We are only taking strict action against those accounts or people which are causing damage or spreading rumours. We are not taking action against other accounts, be it on Facebook, Twitter or even SMSs. I assure you about this,”

take appropriate action against 6 persons impersonating the PMO.” When the social networking site did not reply for a long time, the government asked the Cyber Security Cell to initiate action. “Twitter has now conveyed to us that action has been taken and it has “removed the reported profile from circulation due to violation of ‘our terms of service,” a statment said. The ministry of communications and IT said that Facebook and Google were cooperating with the government. Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said that Twitter, which has its server outside India, has said it is ready for talks. “So, we have provided 28 URLs under which objectionable material is being shown. Now the government does not know that who is behind these URLs, only Twitter and other sites are aware.” Meanwhile, some Twitter users, including Gujarat CM Modi, decided to blackout their display picture in protest. EDITORIALS LEFT IN THE LURCH by the ‘power’ful For an electricity board that has no qualms about hiking tariffs and charging consumers an FSA on every electricity bill, the APCPDCL is surprisingly lax when it comes to supplying power to those very consumers. Where the scheduled power cuts were initially for two hours each day, it has gone up to three hours of late. Granted, the APCPDCL did not cut power during Ramzan, but when they did restart power cuts they did so with a vengeance. The scheduled power cuts in most parts of the City are now for three hours, while on the outskirts it goes up to a whopping eight hours. What’s worse the power cuts often last much more than the scheduled time period and more often than not there are the unannounced blackouts that take you by surprise bang in the middle of dinner or when you’re in a mad rush to get to office on time. Calls to the CPDCL helpline often elicit a non-committal “I’ll check with the local officials. It should be back soon.” Wonder how the people in the seat of power don’t seem to face any such problems!

t’s been ten years since I decided that I will avoid the long queues for darshan at Lord Venkateswara’s abode in Tirupati, and instead pray from wherever I am. But last weekend, a bunch of friends planned a visit to Tirupati. I reluctantly agreed to join them because they refused to go on without me. For two of my friends in the group of five, this was the first visit to the temple hill town. They excitedly chalked out the plan to climb the 9-km uphill with a mix of road and 3,500 steps. I backed out and said I would drive up and wait for them at the hilltop. The climb took them four and a half hours. One, because they took it slow, and two, because it was a very crowded long weekend. They had to

Once atop the hill, we went to enquire about the darshan. It was so crowded that the temple authorities told us to go back the next day and try again. If we went back the next morning and stood in the queue at 3 am, the estimated darshan time would be about 11-12 hours. Having made the difficult climb, my friends were tired. They wanted to get back to the hotel and rest. Yet, they were all restless with the thought of not having completed the trip. We decided to see the temple from

outside. There’s a spot from where one can see the famous golden gopura. We saw that, stood in line for the famous laddu prasada and returned to the hotel late that night. On the drive back downhill, all of us were thinking the same thing – we’ll have to make another trip. The next morning, we heard that the crowd outside the temple entrance was so heavy that the police had to resort to lathicharge to bring things under control. Though the news was disturbing, we felt assured that we made the right decision by turning back. And then, the reasoning started. One friend said: “I think God didn’t want us to visit when the crowd was this bad. So he sent us back.” Another said: “It was our destiny to make the uphill climb, and that was the actual darshan.” The others in the group agreed that we did the right thing. All this while, the attempt was to find a soothing explanation as to why the trip didn’t go as planned.

Why do we give so much importance to darshan, if we also believe that God is everywhere? Believers are of the opinion that darshan is a twoway process. It is an exchange between God and the devotee. Darshan is not just about seeing the deity, but also about the deity seeing the devotee and entering into a spiritual, deeply personal exchange in which the deity reveals its true personality to the devotee. That exchange of energy takes devotion to an all new level, wherein the devotee is energized by some of the power of the deity. It is believed that when this exchange takes place between the deity and the devotee, all limits are crushed and the spiritual love takes on new meaning. The fascinating concept explains that the darshan process opens up the pathway for the devotee and deity to enter into a conversation. Given that my group is filled with believers, another trip to Tirupati has now become inevitable.

The South African people are angry and the pressure on the ANC is rising inexorably. Protests have brought more than two million onto the streets every year since 2008. After more than 18 years in power, the ruling elite can no longer blame apartheid. Now it is their own moral authority being eroded. None of which augurs well for the future.

This is where Chennapa Naidu Darapaneni’s MeraEvents.com steps in to fill this gap. The website not only offers you information about all the events taking place in your respective City but also lets you book tickets for the said events with a click of the button. Founded in 2009, the hugely successful website now has one lakh registered users and sells tickets worth `30 to 50 lakh a month. Talking about his entrepreneurial journey, Naidu says, “An entrepreneur is one who sees an opportunity in the problem. My journey began when I was doing my engineering in JNTU, Anantapur. Being an evening school, I’d get bored during the day. Being a voracious reader, I realised that the city had no shops selling or renting novels or magazines. That is when I decided to start Friends, a book stall that rented out books. The venture proved to be very successful and it helped me pay my entire course fee and monthly expenditure for my brother and me. A few years after finishing my course I went to the US and launched Versant Technologies with Kiran Edukulla in 2000 with almost zero investments. The company offered software services and HR consulting.” On winning projects for a start-up like Versant, he says, “A

Talking about the company objective he explains, “It is not the money that gives satisfaction, but the fact that we are generating employment and changing lives of those working with us that matters.” On the personal front, Naidu loves to attend spiritual events and makes sure that he goes on a spiritual trip once a year. he duo decided on the name OrangeScape for the company because the word Orange originated from the sanskrit word Naranga. Mani says that they wanted an India-connect in the name when they had started it.

hen computers started becoming mainstream one of its first application in an office environment was process automation. However in most scenarios the problem never became easier to deal with, it only substituted paper and made archiving and retrieval of information easier. Kissflow, a product by Chennai-based OrangeScape will however change this for good. They let companies create their own workflows within a few minutes and reduced the time and effort which could be used for more productive purposes. Mani Doraisamy, the cofounder and CTO of OrangeSpace believes that this is the consumerisaton of IT. “You don’t need to be an IT expert or need coding to create workflows using our platform. Anyone who understands the workflow can go ahead and create one,” Mani says. According to him, to start creating a workflow, all you need to have is a Google Apps account and a few minutes to spare. Kissflow is essentially a Product as a Service (PaaS) platform, a product which has been doing the rounds for years in the tech field. However the technology now seems to be coming of age now with a user experience that is less technical and more process oriented. To make the product easily approachable, the company follows a freemium model. The basic account is free to use and up to 10 employees can use it for free. The bigger companies however, will need to shell out $3 per account which includes Google Cloud SQL and appengine costs. Mani is not a newbie in the field and has been working on similar technology at Selectica, which was bought over by Accenture in 2000s. Since Accenture was more of a service company, Mani and his cofounder and CEO Suresh Sambandam left the company and started OrangeScape in 2003.

“Selectica had this concept of a rule engine, which could input simple calculations and add it to a complex configuration engine. So we created a product called Dimension, which had an interface similar to an excel file in 2005. However, we couldn't create a market for ourselves then,” Mani says. Dimension incidentally wasn't easy to afford and used to cost companies around `1 crore. “With Dimension we had simplified the technology, especially from the infrastructure standpoint, however to create a workflow if was still necessary to learn databases and things like that. Cloud computing however has democratised this market now. From there we launched OrangeScape visual PaaS in 2009 — on one side it was a developer environment which offered them more control and the other side was targeted at normal people who wanted to get the work done without getting into the code; it was like Visual Basic for PaaS. Kissflow is part of the latter category,” Mani adds. The company launched their product at Google IO

recently and he says they worked on it for seven months after realising there was a need for such a product in the market. He says that the company decided to go ahead with Google's Appengine as it provides an abstract environment with limits on APIs. This is vastly different from the needs to traditional developers who prefer maximum control over the product and backend and since the workflows won't be developed by developers, Mani thinks this won't be an issue. OrangeScape is now concentrating on small or medium workflows and is not looking to solve the really complicated workflows used in a lot of organisations. “We take simple and medium workflows and work on it. Such processes make up 85% of the workflows in mos organisations and these range from a simple leave approval form to budget approvals that spans across various department and has multiple layers of approval,” he says. They started off with a limited bridge roundup funding of $1million from Indian Angel Network and are now looking to raise a further $10 million to further expand their operations. The product has 500 companies as users and they are expecting more people to sign up in the coming days.

e’ve come to expect that Scandinavian crime thrillers will be dark, foreboding and satisfactorily fast-paced. And Some Kind of Peace, the latest offering in this genre, doesn’t disappoint. The novel focuses on psychologist Siri Bergman, who has enough demons of her own to deal with. A paralysing fear of the dark. A refusal to move on after the death of her husband in an accident two years ago. A

need to isolate herself in their home in the woods, miles away from Stockholm. As she deals with patients suffering from behavioural problems and addictions, Siri questions her ability, and right, to help them. Alone at her home, she imagines that she’s being watched and sleeps with all the lights on. Then one of her patients turns up dead in the lake beside her house. Siri’s orderly life crumbles as everyone she knows is now a potential murderer. She has a stalker who knows her intimately, and is willing to do anything to make her miserable. As her social and professional life unravels, she realises that there is someone out there who wants her dead.

Written in a slick style that maintains a sinister undertone through the book, Some Kind of Peace is an engaging read. The author allows the story to develop gradually, interspersing the narrative with Siri’s sessions with her patients and a mysterious, parallel voice. Though slow in parts, the story was gripping enough to finish in a single sitting. Though the plot is fairly straightforward with hardly any unexpected twists, the breathless quality of the narrative and characters who keep you guessing about their loyalty hold your attention. The protagonist, a change from the swooning heroines and tough-as-nails chicks, is vulnerable without being weak. The protagonist being a

psychologist was a neat touch. Unlike most thrillers, the victim begins examining her life in the light of what is happening to her. Her insecurities and fears are integral to the storyline and we watch as her relationships are sorely tested through the novel. At a point, it becomes difficult, for both Siri and the reader, to distinguish her from her patients. The story, which begins in August, gets darker and deeper as the winter months march on, coming to a head in December. The reader can almost feel the chill in the air as Siri finds herself being hunted by an unknown man who knows her. Our verdict? Pick it up if you want a satisfying quick read and a dose of chills and thrills.

The last of the stories is Across Borders which fails for the basic reason that it could be considered quite stereotypical and is basically a tale of many disjointed elements that fail to connect even at the end of the story. ince its release in June, Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl has been permanently perched at the top of the bestseller lists and has repeatedly been listed among the best reads of the year. Its ascent came as a surprise considering that it doesn't have a Grey in the title and two, it is of the crime thriller genre that’s not from a Scandinavian country. Its plot too is seemingly innocuous. On the morning of their fifth anniversary, Nick Dunne is watching his wife in the kitchen while she hums the theme song of M*A*S*H. It reminds him of the moment he fell for her. It seems for all the world like they’re a happy, loving couple until Nick wryly observes, “there’s something disturbing about recalling a warm memory and feeling

utterly cold...Bile and dread inched up my throat. I thought to myself: Okay, go.” It’s soon obvious that all is not well in the Dunne household. Especially when Nick returns home in the evening to find the front door open, the furniture trashed, blood on the floor and Amy missing. The first thing the detectives notice is Nick. How would you explain the karma theory between a husband and wife through a marathon?

I don’t know about the karma theory, but I can say that we managed to achieve a lot of what we did together.

Have your children taken to long-distance running? How did they cope initially when the two of you were away on runs? My son, Harsha, hasn’t, but the elder of my twin daughters, Dr Pragnya, has participated last year and not to be left out, the other one, Priyanka, plans to follow suit.

Every city today has its share of marathons, like Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai... which are the best lessons to be learnt? Mumbai marathon is one of the world’s richest and sought-after runs.

Should marathons always be connected to issues like charity or social causes? Why not?

Your observations on the marathon races in Olympics 2012. It was as expected very good to watch.

How come countries like Kenya, Ethiopia and Jamaica produce marathon winners consistently? One school of thought is that their body structure makes them superior; the other is that the training system in place there is what makes the difference.

What could happen if Usain Bolt ran in a marathon like he

With so many lifestyle diseases dogging India, is being fit the only way out, other than dietary care? Yes, fitness is of outmost importance whatever your age may be.

Hopeless romantics that they are, they forget that opposites don’t always attract and who they think is Mr Right for you can just as easily be your Mr Wrong. Nishtha Singh, an animator from the city learnt it the hard way. Her best friend Preeti was single and was having trouble with relationships. Nishtha thought she’d step in. Incidentally, another close friend of hers, Rishabh was also single and was from the same profession. So she put two and two together and figured that they would get along well. So she talked Preeti into going out with him. The two hit it off and Nishtha was a proud fairy godmother. It wasn’t a happily ever after though. Five months down the line, an angry Preeti accused Nishta of ruining her life by introducing her to Rishabh. What went wrong she is yet to learn as both her friends have stopped talking to her since then. But Sandhya Ravichander feels proud of being called a matchmaker. She explains, “I have brought together seven couples till now. Three are happily married and two have separated. Most of my friends call me cupid because of this and I think if I can help ‘lovelorn’ souls like this, then why not?” She says it’s difficult to set two people up, but once you get to know the person better, love takes control, she just has to be the one bringing the couple together. But not everyone has such a lucky streak. Interior designer Richa Singh played matchmaker for her childhood friend Rahul. She thought she did a good deed but it all backfired when the girl she paired him became jealous of Richa and Rahul’s friendship and asked him to stay away from her. That is one of the side-effects of being a matchmaker. As the saying goes ‘marriages and matches are made in heaven’ but for Pooja and Abhishek, theirs was made in Class X(B) by Parul. “ I knew Parul had a great taste in men, no wonder she introduced me to Abhishek. Jokes aside, if it weren’t for her cajoling I would not have been so happy in my life,” says Pooja with a smile. The couple had been dating since then and it culminated in marriage three years ago. On the flip side, Avinash Dutt, a banker working in Durban has been an unfortunate victim of matchmaking by his friends and is now strongly against it. “I have been set up with three girls by my well-meaning friends, but sadly all three ended in disaster. I am no longer in the mood to be pushed around, so I made it clear to my friends that they should proba-

bly back off and allow me to do the searching instead.” Divya Taneja and Bhavna Mandal too share the same opinion. “Just because they can’t see anyone single and feel they have a right to have say in their friends personal life does not mean that they can make my life miserable by setting me up with every Tom, Dick and Harry. I went along the first time because I did not want to disappoint my bestie but soon I realised, she just thought I was sad without a partner,” says Bhavna. The verdict is clear. How to play kakuro

SCRIBBLING PAD

Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

City gears up for return of polo season S

eptember 1 will mark the start of Hyderabad’s Polo season. There are three tournaments: The Prince Berar Cup (four goal), Chief Minister’s Cup (six goal) and the Army Commander’s Trophy (12 goal). At a function at Taj Krishna that served as the curtain raiser to the season, Major General Amit Sharma, chairperson of the Bison Riding and Polo institute and Siraj Attari, special steward for the development of polo infrastructure in Hyderabad, unveiled the trophies of the tournaments. There are seven teams participating: Army Service Corps (ASC), NDA Polo team, Artillery (ARTY), Remount & Veterinary Corps (RVC), Armoured Corps Centre & School (ACC&S) Team, HPRC-SSC, HPRC-B, Amateur Riding Club (ARC), Mumbai. The Prince of Berar Cup starts on September 1 and will be on till September 5. Her Highness Princess Esra and her daughter Shekhyar Jah will grace the occasion as chief guests.

NZ to follow on after Ashwin act

Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his third fivewicket haul when he scalped six for 31. Having halted India at 438 on Friday, New Zealand would have hoped to put up a near similar display with the bat but they failed miserably in their endeavour. The Kiwis ended their innings at 159 after the morning session’s play, adding to their overnight total of 106 for five. They fell short by 80 runs, to avoid follow-on. The morning began with Kruger van Wyk losing his wicket to Umesh Yadav when he was caught napping in front of the stumps with the score reading 111 for six. Doug Bracewell, who replaced van Wyk, was the next to depart. He was deceived by a superb ball from Pragyan Ojha which saw Dhoni dismantle the stumps and send the batsman back to the pavilion. James Franklin seemed to put up some resistance against the Indian bowlers but it did not prove fruitful as he lost partners at the other end. Meanwhile, the Indian bowlers had an amazing time with the ball. Ashwin’s six led the pack while Ohja claimed three and Yadav struck today morning. On Friday, it looked like India could possibly post a total of 500 but disciplined bowing by the Kiwis and a few miscalculated shots on part of the Indians saw them close their innings at 438. With New Zealand having asked to follow on, they would hope to change the tide in their favour at least in the second innings.
