Two youths arrested

urga Bhavani, 55, of Sriram Nagar, under Narsingi Police Station limits committed suicide by consuming acid on Thursday. She fell unconscious after consuming the acid and was shifted to Gandhi Hospital where she died. According to her suicide note, she committed suicide after a quarrel over a power connection with her neighbours.

T

wo youths by the name Mohd Asad, 21, a videographer and his friend Mohd Dastagir, 22, a salesman belonging to Ali Nagar were arrested by the Kalapathar police and sent to judicial remand on Thursday night. It is being said that they were drunk and were trying to rob an auto driver and a scooterist by threatening them with a knife.

n what could be described as a typical filmy style vendetta, a City youth who went to reach a compromise with the family members of a man who was murdered by his brother, was thrashed so severely that he died in a few hours. What was even more shocking was that a City

hospital refused him treatment and asked the relatives to take him elsewhere. The worried parents rushed the boy to another hospital nearby where he was declared ‘brought dead.’ Mohd Sadiq Pasha, 23, of Hafizbaba Nagar was just an undergraduate. His elder brother Mohd Chand was involved in the murder of one auto driver Kaleem and has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment. As Pasha’s parents feared reprisal from Kaleem’s kin they sent their son to strike a com-

promise with the victim’s family. Accordingly, Pasha went to Kaleem’s house in Singreni Colony along with his other brother Mohd Usman on Tuesday night. When Pasha was offering apologies and seeking a compromise Kaleem’s father and his four sons lost their temper and started beating the boy and hurling abuses at him. When he fell unconscious someone informed his parents and they rushed the boy to a nearby private hospital in

Champapet where they were advised to shift him to a ‘better equipped’ hospital as he had deep and severe injuries calling for immediate surgery. The hapless relatives rushed him to another hospital where he was declared dead, said Saidabad suinspector D Vishnuvardhan Reddy. Mohd Usman escaped with injuries. After the death of the boy, irate people attacked the first hospital. Police have booked Kaleem’s brothers for attack and murder.

Desi boy in videshi team

If you were surprised to find an Indian name in the New Zealand team visiting the City for the test series, don’t be. Tarun Sai, a City boy talks about his experience and aspirations as a player. SRINIVAS SETTY

TARUN SAI NETHULA LIVED THE FIRST 11 YEARS OF HIS LIFE IN SECUNDERABAD BEFORE RELOCATING TO NEW ZEALAND ALONG WITH HIS FAMILY.

shoaib.s@postnoon.com

B

orn in Kurnool, Tarun Sai Nethula lived the first 11 years of his life in Secunderabad before his family relocated to New Zealand. Since he is in the City as part of the touring cricket team, we spoke to him. n Are your parents devotees of Sai Baba? Yes, our family is quite a spiritual one. Both my dad, who is a religious man, and my name have Shirdi Sai Baba’s name. n Any particular reason for your ODI shirt number being 36 considering that May 8, 1983 is your birthday. Most people take their birthdate —Dhoni takes number 7 for example. It was given to me. My father said I should keep it, even though I could have had it changed. n When will you play your first 20-20 match? I don’t really know, for selection is not in my control. n What about your test debut? I hope to get selected sooner than later. n Who is your favourite leg spinner? Anil Kumble; he is the reason why I took to leg spin bowling.

What are your memories of Kurnool, as you moved out when you were 12? I was only born in Kurnool. When I was three days old we shifted to Secunderabad. n New Zealand was the last landmass to be settled by humans, does that make people there more civilised? It is the prettiest and greenest country in the world, since it is not tampered much by human n

beings. Were you upset about missing a test debut when the team management decided to field Jeetan Patel instead of you in Hyderabad? No. We are a part of the same team and have our parts to play and contribute to the team. n Your impression when Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed cheaply. We were happy. We understood n

that we had to get him out cheaply in order to stand a chance. n How long has your association with the St John’s Coaching Academy been? I received coaching there when I was about 10 years old for a period of 18 months. I have been there on my last trip about 11 years ago. n Have you visited the National Cricket Academy

in Bangalore to meet your childhood idol Anil Kumble? Unfortunately not, but I hope to do so soon. n Your nightmares about Chris Gayle. Not just mine, he is a nightmare for many as presently he is the most destructive player in the world. n Are your cricketing skills from your father Sainath (an engineer) or your mother whom you lost six months after moving to New Zealand? My cricketing skills come from my dad’s family. n Auckland is rated as the third most liveable city in the world. Your thoughts. I didn’t know that, though I can see it for a fact. n Have you met VVS Laxman after he called it a day? No. But I am hoping to have coffee and some biscuits with him in the coming days.

Is Botsa on his way out?

His tenure has been marred by numerous controversies. Now political developments in the Congress appear to be signalling towards a new APCC president in the coming days. Md Inkeshaf Ahmed

R

ecent political developments in the ruling Congress party seem to be taking its toll on incumbent APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana. There is a clear indication that Botsa will be removed from his post by the party high command for his failures in tackling many crucial issues. The names of many Congress leaders are doing the rounds to succeed him. Prominent names include former PCC president D Srinivas, Rajya Sabha member K Chiranjeevi, APCC general secretary Abid Rasool Khan and agriculture minister Kanna Lakshminarayana. The chances of D Srinivas seem better as he has been credited with bringing the party back to power for two consecutive terms. Going a step ahead, senior leader and MLC P Venkata Rao requested the high command to appoint him as APCC president in case there is a need for a replacement. The high command leaders reportedly held discus-

The CM reportedly has told the party high command leaders that there is a strong need to appoint a new face to head the APCC as the image of the party is declining. The CM appears to be in favour of appointing D Srinivas.

A CONTROVERSIAL MAN

The issue has became a bone of contention for the high command due to his constant failures in effectively discharging his duties. AICC leaders like

Veerappa Moily, Ghulam Nabi Azad (who is now the Congress AP in-charge) and Vayalar Ravi have reportedly expressed their displeasure over the functioning of Botsa and the series of allegations against him. Botsa’s tenure as APCC president has been marred by many controversies and allegations. His name cropped up in the sensational liquor syndicate probe by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) and led to a huge outcry by the opposition political parties which demanded his immediate resignation. Botsa added fuel to the fire by saying that his entire family is involved in the liquor business and questioned the criticism of opposition. Apart from this, Botsa’s name also figured prominently in the massacre of people belonging to the Dalit community in Lakshmipur of Srikakulam district. But, the PCC president denied these allegations. He is also vocal in criticising the CM albeit indirectly, especially on the issue of gas allocations to Maharashtra from KG Basin.

Govt denies censorship, Twitter to block imposters

NEW DELHI: In the wake of widespread discontent on the social media over its decision to block certain Twitter accounts, including that of journalists, the government on Friday clarified that it was taking action only against sites that “can cause damage”. Twitter, after not initially responding to government requests, has agreed to block six sites impersonating the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Following fake messages about the Assam violence, home minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Friday said that social media accounts which have posted objectionable and inflammatory content are being blocked but there was no censorship. “We are only taking strict action against those accounts or people which are causing damage or spreading rumours. We are not taking action against other accounts, be it on Facebook, Twitter or even SMSs. I assure you about this,”

THE GOVERNMENT’S CLARIFICATION CAME IN THE WAKE OF IT ASKING TWITTER TO BLOCK SOME IMPOSTER ACCOUNTS OF THE PMO AND OTHER SITES. Shinde said. “There is no censorship at all. We decided on taking action because there were pictures of Myammar online, which were disturbing the atmosphere here in India. I am again reassuring you,” Shinde added. The government’s clarification came in the wake of it asking Twitter to block some imposter accounts of the PMO and other social media sites. Twitter has agreed to block all fake accounts using the name of the PMO. The PMO said in a statement that it had “requested Twitter to

take appropriate action against 6 persons impersonating the PMO.” When the social networking site did not reply for a long time, the government asked the Cyber Security Cell to initiate action. “Twitter has now conveyed to us that action has been taken and it has “removed the reported profile from circulation due to violation of ‘our terms of service,” a statment said. The ministry of communications and IT said that Facebook and Google were cooperating with the government. Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said that Twitter, which has its server outside India, has said it is ready for talks. “So, we have provided 28 URLs under which objectionable material is being shown. Now the government does not know that who is behind these URLs, only Twitter and other sites are aware.” Meanwhile, some Twitter users, including Gujarat CM Modi, decided to blackout their display picture in protest. Tilak’s voice recording unearthed PUNE: A rare audio recording of Lokmanya Tilak done 97 years ago, believed to be the only one of its kind, has now come to light for hearing the voice of the “father of Indian unrest” who passed away in 1920 after initiating the country’s freedom struggle against the British rulers. While a vast collection of the Lokmanya’s articles and books has been carefully preserved over the momentous years at the ‘Kesari’ trust library, the audio of his voice was not available as of now, according to Dipak

Tilak, the great grandson of the Lokmanya , who had famously declared “Swarajya is my birthright “. Interestingly, the voice of Tilak is captured during the recording of a music concert held in Pune on September 21, 1915 to celebrate Ganesh festival— started by Tilak himself to mobilize masses — which was done by one Seth Lakhmichand Narang who had specially come for the event from Karachi. A connoisseur of music, Narang had carried a US made

12 die in Afghan air strikes

‘Sorry I could not kill more’

ASADABAD, AFGHANISTAN: Two air

orwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik has said that he regrets not killing more people in a shooting rampage that left 77 people dead last year. Breivik said he wanted to issue an apology, but it was not for the victims. “I wish to apologise to all militant nationalists that I wasn’t able to execute more,” he said.

strikes in eastern Afghanistan killed a dozen insurgents, including a top Taliban commander, NATO and Afghan officials said Saturday. “There were two separate air strikes in Kunar (province) yesterday. A total of 12 insurgents were killed, six in each air strike,” a NATO spokesman told AFP.

Harry havoc splits UK press Some nonetheless defended The Sun’s right to do so, while others insisted there was no justification for printing them.

DAMASCUS: Britain’s press thrashed out Saturday whether The Sun newspaper had done the right thing by eventually publishing pictures of a naked Prince Harry cavorting with similarlyclad women in Las Vegas. Rupert Murdoch’s flagship British tabloid broke ranks with other UK papers Friday in printing the two images, saying it was striking a blow for press freedom. Britain’s top-selling newspaper said it was ludicrous that they should not be seen on UK news stands when millions had already seen them online and in foreign publications, including just across the border in the Irish Republic. No other British newspapers have run the pictures of the 27-year-old army helicopter pilot, who is third in line to the throne. Some nonetheless defended The Sun’s right to do so, while others insisted there was no justification for printing them. Industry figures say

A

friend of Prince Harry who was on his infamous Las Vegas party trip said Saturday the person who leaked naked photos of the British royal was “despicable”. Film-maker Arthur Landon, 30, said it was despicable that someone would accept Harry’s hospitality and then take these pictures.

US envoy car shot at MEXICO: Mexican federal police shot at a US diplomatic car as they chased criminals south of Mexico City, in a chaotic incident that left two US embassy employees wounded. The two staffers were given medical treatment and were in stable condition Friday, the Mexican and US governments said in separate statements. A Mexican navy captain who was with them suffered light injuries. A US embassy statement said the diplomatic car was “ambushed by a group of individuals.”

Typhoon approaches Japan

the wider British media did not run them due to fears that the phone-hacking scandal at Murdoch’s now-defunct News of the World will spark tougher regulation of the press. The scandal, which saw Murdoch close the 168-year-old tabloid in July last year, sparked an inquiry led by judge Brian Leveson, who is due to make recommendations on the future of press regulation by the end of the year. The Guardian said the only reasonable publication test was not entertainment or sales but an agreed concept of the public interest. “The argument that the material is already in the public domain is a strong one -- but also dangerous. Taken to its logical extremes, it means Britain abandons any kind of ethical, regulatory or legal framework,” it said. “The stage is thus set for a balancing of two human rights — freedom of expression versus privacy. On the facts of this particular case it is a fine balance.”

Nicaragua seizes $7mn at border MANAGUA: Nicaraguan police have seized at least $7 million from 18 individuals who tried to enter the country from Honduras, claiming to be Mexican television workers, authorities said Friday. Police chief Aminta Granera said the group had tried to enter Nicaragua last Tuesday through the border crossing of Las Manos. They were traveling in six minivans bearing the logo of Televisa, the Mexican state-run television conglomerate, and claimed to be working for it.

OKINAWA: Typhoon Bolaven, the 15th typhoon of the season, was expected to reach Okinawa on Sunday, island weather officials in Japan said on Saturday. It comes on the heels of Typhoon Tembin, which on Friday crossed over southern Taiwan and caused flooding in some areas, but largely spared the island’s heavily populated areas.

Another Mitt gaffe

Romney talks about Obama’s birth certificate again LONDON: A social policy debate has dogged Mitt Romney’s campaign message, but he caused his own distraction Friday when he dredged up the conspiracy over President Barack Obama’s birth certificate. Romney had aimed to roll into the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida next week touting his business credentials, pushing party unity and convincing voters he was more capable of turning the economy around than the current president. Speaking in Michigan about his and his wife’s roots in the state, Romney told a campaign crowd: “no

one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”

ROMNEY SAID, “NO ONE’S EVER ASKED TO SEE MY BIRTH CERTIFICATE.” Many in the crowd of about 10,000 cheered and applauded, but it was an awkward link to a longstanding conspiracy fueled by right-wing conservatives who question whether Obama was born in the United States. But he was

sideswiped by a debate on rape and abortion this week after Todd Akin said a woman’s body could prevent pregnancy in the case of “legitimate rape.” Romney led Republican calls for Akin to bow out of his Senate race, but the Missouri congressman’s refusal has left party leaders fighting perceptions of weakness and internal division over issues like abortion. On Thursday, Romney returned to his economic plan by unveiling an energy platform aiming to boost US oil and gas production, but his latest birth certificate quip again muddled the message.

A story of infamy

The Sun must face action

I

am at a loss for words at Lance Armstrong’s decision not to prove wrong the dopping charges against him. Over the years he had been such a hero to a lot of people, dinning into our heads that nothing’s impossible. His remarkable story will now be remembered for infamy. Janet Williams Via email

he Sun tabloid’s publishing nude pics of Harry is so very unethical. This, I think, is infringing on the privacy of a person. A sad story

here are no words to describe the pain that Imran’s family suffers. Here’s a boy who tried to protect someone from eveteasing and paid with his life. One is bound to feel what the elderly person says in the story is true: “Our society does not deserve such heroes.” Suraj Misra Via email

EDITORIALS LEFT IN THE LURCH by the ‘power’ful For an electricity board that has no qualms about hiking tariffs and charging consumers an FSA on every electricity bill, the APCPDCL is surprisingly lax when it comes to supplying power to those very consumers. Where the scheduled power cuts were initially for two hours each day, it has gone up to three hours of late. Granted, the APCPDCL did not cut power during Ramzan, but when they did restart power cuts they did so with a vengeance. The scheduled power cuts in most parts of the City are now for three hours, while on the outskirts it goes up to a whopping eight hours. What’s worse the power cuts often last much more than the scheduled time period and more often than not there are the unannounced blackouts that take you by surprise bang in the middle of dinner or when you’re in a mad rush to get to office on time. Calls to the CPDCL helpline often elicit a non-committal “I’ll check with the local officials. It should be back soon.” Wonder how the people in the seat of power don’t seem to face any such problems!

WHY WE LOVE... Lance Armstrong If he could conquer cancer he could have kept on his fight against charges that he doped to win the Tour de France seven times. But by dropping his challenge, he has inadvertantly admitted that he achieved his titles by the help of steroids. His decision has shattered many a million fans, who drew inspiration from him to “live strong”. His story was remarkable in many aspects: that he was teetering on the brink of death, there was no hope of comeback and then he made an amazing recovery and did all he did. Guess he too was human, after all.

Articles of Faith Soul Curry SUMAA TEKUR

I

t’s been ten years since I decided that I will avoid the long queues for darshan at Lord Venkateswara’s abode in Tirupati, and instead pray from wherever I am. But last weekend, a bunch of friends planned a visit to Tirupati. I reluctantly agreed to join them because they refused to go on without me. For two of my friends in the group of five, this was the first visit to the temple hill town. They excitedly chalked out the plan to climb the 9-km uphill with a mix of road and 3,500 steps. I backed out and said I would drive up and wait for them at the hilltop. The climb took them four and a half hours. One, because they took it slow, and two, because it was a very crowded long weekend. They had to

IT IS BELIEVED THAT WHEN THIS EXCHANGE TAKES PLACE BETWEEN THE DEITY AND THE DEVOTEE, ALL LIMITS ARE CRUSHED AND THE SPIRITUAL LOVE TAKES ON NEW MEANING. zigzag their way to the top. Once atop the hill, we went to enquire about the darshan. It was so crowded that the temple authorities told us to go back the next day and try again. If we went back the next morning and stood in the queue at 3 am, the estimated darshan time would be about 11-12 hours. Having made the difficult climb, my friends were tired. They wanted to get back to the hotel and rest. Yet, they were all restless with the thought of not having completed the trip. We decided to see the temple from

outside. There’s a spot from where one can see the famous golden gopura. We saw that, stood in line for the famous laddu prasada and returned to the hotel late that night. On the drive back downhill, all of us were thinking the same thing – we’ll have to make another trip. The next morning, we heard that the crowd outside the temple entrance was so heavy that the police had to resort to lathicharge to bring things under control. Though the news was disturbing, we felt assured that we made the right decision by turning back. And then, the reasoning started. One friend said: “I think God didn’t want us to visit when the crowd was this bad. So he sent us back.” Another said: “It was our destiny to make the uphill climb, and that was the actual darshan.” The others in the group agreed that we did the right thing. All this while, the attempt was to find a soothing explanation as to why the trip didn’t go as planned.

Why do we give so much importance to darshan, if we also believe that God is everywhere? Believers are of the opinion that darshan is a twoway process. It is an exchange between God and the devotee. Darshan is not just about seeing the deity, but also about the deity seeing the devotee and entering into a spiritual, deeply personal exchange in which the deity reveals its true personality to the devotee. That exchange of energy takes devotion to an all new level, wherein the devotee is energized by some of the power of the deity. It is believed that when this exchange takes place between the deity and the devotee, all limits are crushed and the spiritual love takes on new meaning. The fascinating concept explains that the darshan process opens up the pathway for the devotee and deity to enter into a conversation. Given that my group is filled with believers, another trip to Tirupati has now become inevitable.

in 2010, she was caught on tape offering an undercover News of the World reporter access to her former husband for almost $700,000, ABC News reported. Talk about embarrassing.

2. Diana’s affairs...

P

rince Harry’s naked Vegas photos have taken the Internet by storm, but the loveable British badboy is hardly the only member of the royal family to get into trouble. Here, some other incidents that probably had the Queen Mother at least a little bit mortified.

1. Sarah Ferguson takes bribes, bathes topless The Duchess of York, also known as “Fergie,” has had her fair share of embarrassing moments. Ferguson was married to Prince Andrew, but the couple agreed to separate in January of 1992 after six years of marriage. Fergie wasted no time making headlines. In August 1992, just seven months after their separation, the Duchess was photographed sunbathing topless with her former financial adviser, John Bryan, who seemed to be sucking on her toes. The real truth came out in 2011, when Ferguson’s current financial advisor told the Independent that Bryan was, as a matter of fact, licking the Duchess’ instep. However, things got worse for Ferguson before they got better:

PRINCE HARRY’S PARENTS ARE NO ANGELS. BOTH HIS MOTHER, THE LATE DIANA, AND HIS FATHER, PRINCE CHARLES, WERE CAUGHT HAVING AFFAIRS WHILE THEY WERE STILL MARRIED. being one of the most down-toearth royals, reportedly had at least five affairs, including one with her polo-playing friend James Hewitt which she admitted to in 1995. Her other suitors included PR executive James Gilbey, art dealer Oliver Hoare, England rugby captain Will Carling, and her bodyguard Barry Mannakee, according to the Daily Mail.

3. ...and Charles’ tampongate Charles, meanwhile, was carry-

ing on an affair with his nowwife Camilla Parker Bowles. Their long-running secret relationship came to light in 1992 after a series of their recorded phone conversations surfaced, including one that came to be known as “tampongate,” in which the Prince expressed a desire to be Camilla’s...well ...tampa. Maybe Harry comes by the awkward behaviour honestly, then?

4. Prince Philip II’s international commentary Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband, is known for blurting out, how shall we say it, flippant remarks. One of his finest moments came during a meeting

with Alfredo Stroessner, Paraguay’s dictator. “It’s a pleasant change to be in a country that isn’t ruled by its people,” the Prince told Stroessner. Another shocking Philip comment came during a visit by the royal couple to China in 1986. While chatting with a British student, he came out with this gem: “If you stay here much longer, you will go home with slitty eyes”. The best part? The Prince stood by his words, saying that “the Chinese weren’t worried about it, so why should anyone else?”

5. Zara Phillips’s father calls her “a brat”

6. Pippa’s gun incident Duchess of Cambridge’s sister, Pippa Middleton, got into a tight spot in April 2012 when she was photographed in the seat of the convertible next to a man pointing a gun at a paparazzi, looking very much amused. The scandal prompted speculation that the 27 year old could face time in prison due to France’s strict laws about threatening someone with a weapon, real or fake, the Telegraph reported. Here’s an analogy to toss around: Pippa is to Kate as Harry is to William. Think about it.

Prince Harry’s parents are no angels themselves. Both his mother, the late Princess Diana, and his father, Prince Charles, were caught having affairs while they were still married. Diana, who earned the nickname “the People’s Princess” for

ried to Princess Anne, the Queen’s only daughter, from 1973 until 1992. His children, Zara and Peter Philips, are the first royals to eschew royal titles, which almost merits its own scandal paragraph altogether. However, Capt. Philips doesn’t seem too enamored with his low-key daughter. While he described Peter as an easy-going child in a 2012 interview, Zara was reportedly another story, the Telegraph reported. “He (Peter) was a very well-behaved little boy; he wasn’t much trouble at all. He knew where the line was and he didn’t cross it,” said Mark. “Zara, on the other hand, who came along four years later, was much more difficult, much more of a brat. I don’t think she accepted that line at all.” It seems even non-royal royals get into trouble sometimes.

F

ilm of the massacre at the Marikana platinum mine in South Africa last week, in which 34 protesters were shot dead by police, suggests chaotic panic among badly trained officers. But one of the leaders of the strikers insists it was planned. “The writing is on the wall, they are going to kill you,” said Joseph Mathunjwa, of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, just before the violence began. However it happened, Marikana looks set to become a polarising political symbol reminiscent of the Sharpeville Massacre of anti-apartheid protesters in 1960. On one side stand the militants of the AMCU, on the other, those of its rival, the National Union of Mineworkers. But this is more than a clash between two unions. It is a conflict between the postapartheid promise and the corrupt reality that goes to the heart of modern South Africa. The NUM is at the centre of South Africa’s union movement

which, together with the South African Communist Party and the ruling elite, the African National Congress, form an alliance which has dominated the country since the end of white rule. Despite repeated pledges to improve life for ordinary citizens, in practice it has created an elite which has enriched itself through patronage. The average man or woman is little better off than before. The choice between corruption and violence is an unhappy one. President Jacob Zuma’s handling of the Marikana tragedy has dented his chances of being re-elected head of the ANC in December. Meanwhile, the extremist Julius Malema, expelled from his role as president of the ANC Youth League, is making political capital from the events, visiting the scene of the shooting and attending yesterday’s memorial service to sit with widows of the dead. The South African people are angry and the pressure on the ANC is rising inexorably. Protests have brought more than two million onto the streets every year since 2008. After more than 18 years in power, the ruling elite can no longer blame apartheid. Now it is their own moral authority being eroded. None of which augurs well for the future.

ow often have you read about an event in the newspaper after it has taken place and wished you’d known earlier so you could have attended it? As is often the case, most events are covered by the media only after they take place. While large scale events advertise effectively, smaller but equally good events often miss the public eye. This is where Chennapa Naidu Darapaneni’s MeraEvents.com steps in to fill this gap. The website not only offers you information about all the events taking place in your respective City but also lets you book tickets for the said events with a click of the button. Founded in 2009, the hugely successful website now has one lakh registered users and sells tickets worth `30 to 50 lakh a month. Talking about his entrepreneurial journey, Naidu says, “An entrepreneur is one who sees an opportunity in the problem. My journey began when I was doing my engineering in JNTU, Anantapur. Being an evening school, I’d get bored during the day. Being a voracious reader, I realised that the city had no shops selling or renting novels or magazines. That is when I decided to start Friends, a book stall that rented out books. The venture proved to be very successful and it helped me pay my entire course fee and monthly expenditure for my brother and me. A few years after finishing my course I went to the US and launched Versant Technologies with Kiran Edukulla in 2000 with almost zero investments. The company offered software services and HR consulting.” On winning projects for a start-up like Versant, he says, “A

What we did was understand a company’s problem and solve part of it so they gained confidence in us. Customers paid us once they were happy with the solution offered.” Since its inception, the company has grown manifold with an almost 100 per cent growth year on year and even started an offshore centre in India in 2004. Naidu returned to the country in 2007 and decided to start a business in the consumer market. “It was when I was attending events in the City that I realised that there was barely any event information until it

I invested `5 lakh and started the product (website) with many features where organisers can create and update an event, download information and sell tickets through a payment gateway. The product was rolled out in

October 2009 after developing a comprehensive website backed by holistic research,” he says. Talking about the revenue model, he says, “Initially, it was based on ticket sales. We used to charge the organisers 10 per cent of which 4.2 per cent was to paid to the payment gateway. However, over time we changed our model and started charging customers a fixed amount for promotion of an event if they did not want to share the revenues. The event organisers can sell their tickets free of cost on the site by just paying 2.5 per cent towards payment gateway charges.” Over time, the business has invested more than `2.5 crore

towards operations and building the brand. The company currently has a 300 to 400 per cent growth rate in revenues and is expecting a breakeven by the end of the year. They also plan to expand operations to other major cities in the next few months. The company has also developed two complementary products. It launched moozup.com last November, which is the first of its kind in the country. The website allows people who attend a particular event learn a bit more about the other attendees and arrange for professional meetings later on. It also launched iPhone and Android apps to make the application available during the event. It is likely to launch venues.meravents.com in October, which will help the customer to look for the right venue as per his/her requirement. Talking about the company objective he explains, “It is not the money that gives satisfaction, but the fact that we are generating employment and changing lives of those working with us that matters.” On the personal front, Naidu loves to attend spiritual events and makes sure that he goes on a spiritual trip once a year. He also loves spending time with his two children.

T

he 1971 Harley-Davidson FX Super Glide was made out of a combination of the features of two popular Harleys. In fact, it was Harley’s first factory custom bike. It was also known as Sparkling America, primarily because of the colours it was painted in red, white and blue paint and a unique “boat-tail” rear fender — all trademarks that say circa: “1970s”. The boat-tail however was not well received and soon they released variations without it. Its variations like Low Rider, Dyna, FXR Super Glide soon became a hit with the public.

o own a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is like having a personalised amusement ride, complete with the thrills. When it’s time to peel a little rubber on the strip, the Sportster XR1200 is the American-made bike that can lay it down. Based on the classic XR 750, this racing bike updates another of the best Harley Davidson classics. In the category of “don’t try this at home,” the classic XR750 was the bike used by Evel Knievel.

5. Electra Glide:

E

very time Harley’s technology made a particularly great leap forward, the bike names reflected the change. In 1965, Panhead engines made one of their final appearances, with the inaugural year of their iconic Electra Glide—so named because it featured an electric start, in addition to the standard kick start. 1969 was the year the Electra Glide firmly cemented itself in the minds of Harley enthusiasts all over the world. It was the year the Electra Glide sprouted wings—or, more specifically, the batwing fairing that’s so wellrecognised that even people who couldn’t care less about Harleys know a Harley just rolled by.

1. Knucklehead:

T

here is no best motorbikes list which can do without the Knucklehead. Riders say, if it weren’t for this bike, there would not have been any Harley. It’s the bike with the most sex appeal. Launched in 1936, after the war soldiers were looking for peacetime excitement and that’s when the bike came to be. It was the fastest bike in its time as it boasts of 1,000cc V-twin engines. People were obsessed with speed and so they started to heavily modify their vehicles and called them choppers. The engine gives it its name. It hugs the road and its part of history.

arley-Davidson keeps the CVO lineup at four models on two basic platforms: The CVO Softail Convertible; the CVO Street Glide; the CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide; and the newest member, the CVO Road Glide Custom, which replaces a touring-oriented version of the RG found in the 2011 line. Winner of the Most Outrageous Sound System award is the returning CVO Street Glide. Eight speakers—four (including two tweeters) in the batwing fairing, two in the lowers and two in the saddlebag lids—convey music with the force of 100 watts per channel (400 total). Now this is one boisterous ride.

he duo decided on the name OrangeScape for the company because the word Orange originated from the sanskrit word Naranga. Mani says that they wanted an India-connect in the name when they had started it.

W

hen computers started becoming mainstream one of its first application in an office environment was process automation. However in most scenarios the problem never became easier to deal with, it only substituted paper and made archiving and retrieval of information easier. Kissflow, a product by Chennai-based OrangeScape will however change this for good. They let companies create their own workflows within a few minutes and reduced the time and effort which could be used for more productive purposes. Mani Doraisamy, the cofounder and CTO of OrangeSpace believes that this is the consumerisaton of IT. “You don’t need to be an IT expert or need coding to create workflows using our platform. Anyone who understands the workflow can go ahead and create one,” Mani says. According to him, to start creating a workflow, all you need to have is a Google Apps account and a few minutes to spare. Kissflow is essentially a Product as a Service (PaaS) platform, a product which has been doing the rounds for years in the tech field. However the technology now seems to be coming of age now with a user experience that is less technical and more process oriented. To make the product easily approachable, the company follows a freemium model. The basic account is free to use and up to 10 employees can use it for free. The bigger companies however, will need to shell out $3 per account which includes Google Cloud SQL and appengine costs. Mani is not a newbie in the field and has been working on similar technology at Selectica, which was bought over by Accenture in 2000s. Since Accenture was more of a service company, Mani and his cofounder and CEO Suresh Sambandam left the company and started OrangeScape in 2003.

THE TECHNOLOGY SEEMS TO BE COMING OF AGE NOW WITH A USER EXPERIENCE THAT IS LESS TECHNICAL AND MORE PROCESS ORIENTED.

“Selectica had this concept of a rule engine, which could input simple calculations and add it to a complex configuration engine. So we created a product called Dimension, which had an interface similar to an excel file in 2005. However, we couldn't create a market for ourselves then,” Mani says. Dimension incidentally wasn't easy to afford and used to cost companies around `1 crore. “With Dimension we had simplified the technology, especially from the infrastructure standpoint, however to create a workflow if was still necessary to learn databases and things like that. Cloud computing however has democratised this market now. From there we launched OrangeScape visual PaaS in 2009 — on one side it was a developer environment which offered them more control and the other side was targeted at normal people who wanted to get the work done without getting into the code; it was like Visual Basic for PaaS. Kissflow is part of the latter category,” Mani adds. The company launched their product at Google IO

recently and he says they worked on it for seven months after realising there was a need for such a product in the market. He says that the company decided to go ahead with Google's Appengine as it provides an abstract environment with limits on APIs. This is vastly different from the needs to traditional developers who prefer maximum control over the product and backend and since the workflows won't be developed by developers, Mani thinks this won't be an issue. OrangeScape is now concentrating on small or medium workflows and is not looking to solve the really complicated workflows used in a lot of organisations. “We take simple and medium workflows and work on it. Such processes make up 85% of the workflows in mos organisations and these range from a simple leave approval form to budget approvals that spans across various department and has multiple layers of approval,” he says. They started off with a limited bridge roundup funding of $1million from Indian Angel Network and are now looking to raise a further $10 million to further expand their operations. The product has 500 companies as users and they are expecting more people to sign up in the coming days.

ver wondered what goes on in the little heads of your pets? Are they excited when you feed them? What makes them behave the way they do? Those who have pets can easily relate to these questions. While some keep these thoughts to themselves there are some animal lovers around the world who are making waves in the blogosphere by chronicling their versions of the thoughts of their pets. Thus bringing to fore the stories of Nerissa, Romeo and more. These blogs have thousands of followers who wait eagerly to find what mischief Romeo the cat has been up to and how did Nerissa and her siblings manage to irritate their peep (short for people). “I am an ardent follower of these pet blogs. I have always wanted to know what my dog is thinking. But never did I think of this idea. I wait each morning to read the new entries. These animal persons are not restricted to the blogosphere, they are making their presence felt in other social networking sites like Facebook and twitter too. “I have many pets at home and they are more popular with my neighbours and friends than me. I have Facebook profiles for them and all their fans send requests. I am known as Ginger's owner to many in my locality. You get so many friend requests on Facebook and when you take them out for a walk you are flooded with questions about the dog,” Rakesh Rohanth says. It's not just animal lovers but even people who do not own pets are also hooked to these blogs. One such fan Sunny M says, “It’s quite funny to see to what extent people think about their pets. I have never wanted a pet in my life and I would never buy one but these blogs are really interesting and funny. The idea of writing from the point of view of the pets is quite novel. This is sending out a message out that pets are also part of family these days.”

Playing mind games Some Kind of Peace, the latest of the Scandinavian thrillers in the market, is as foreboding as its dark cover promises.

JYOTSNA NAMBIAR

jyotsna.n@postnoon.com

W

e’ve come to expect that Scandinavian crime thrillers will be dark, foreboding and satisfactorily fast-paced. And Some Kind of Peace, the latest offering in this genre, doesn’t disappoint. The novel focuses on psychologist Siri Bergman, who has enough demons of her own to deal with. A paralysing fear of the dark. A refusal to move on after the death of her husband in an accident two years ago. A

need to isolate herself in their home in the woods, miles away from Stockholm. As she deals with patients suffering from behavioural problems and addictions, Siri questions her ability, and right, to help them. Alone at her home, she imagines that she’s being watched and sleeps with all the lights on. Then one of her patients turns up dead in the lake beside her house. Siri’s orderly life crumbles as everyone she knows is now a potential murderer. She has a stalker who knows her intimately, and is willing to do anything to make her miserable. As her social and professional life unravels, she realises that there is someone out there who wants her dead.

Written in a slick style that maintains a sinister undertone through the book, Some Kind of Peace is an engaging read. The author allows the story to develop gradually, interspersing the narrative with Siri’s sessions with her patients and a mysterious, parallel voice. Though slow in parts, the story was gripping enough to finish in a single sitting. Though the plot is fairly straightforward with hardly any unexpected twists, the breathless quality of the narrative and characters who keep you guessing about their loyalty hold your attention. The protagonist, a change from the swooning heroines and tough-as-nails chicks, is vulnerable without being weak. The protagonist being a

psychologist was a neat touch. Unlike most thrillers, the victim begins examining her life in the light of what is happening to her. Her insecurities and fears are integral to the storyline and we watch as her relationships are sorely tested through the novel. At a point, it becomes difficult, for both Siri and the reader, to distinguish her from her patients. The story, which begins in August, gets darker and deeper as the winter months march on, coming to a head in December. The reader can almost feel the chill in the air as Siri finds herself being hunted by an unknown man who knows her. Our verdict? Pick it up if you want a satisfying quick read and a dose of chills and thrills.

Its plot too is seemingly innocuous. On the morning of their fifth anniversary, Nick Dunne is watching his wife in the kitchen while she hums the theme song of M*A*S*H. It reminds him of the moment he fell for her. It seems for all the world like they’re a happy, loving couple until Nick wryly observes, “there’s something disturbing about recalling a warm memory and feeling

utterly cold...Bile and dread inched up my throat. I thought to myself: Okay, go.” It’s soon obvious that all is not well in the Dunne household. Especially when Nick returns home in the evening to find the front door open, the furniture trashed, blood on the floor and Amy missing. The first thing the detectives notice is Nick. Something about him is off. He is unnaturally calm. He is too eager to please. He seems to be hiding something. He refers to his wife in the past tense. He knows little about his wife. He is less than honest. He flashes a killer grin to the media while asking for support. He is, to their eyes, the prime suspect. But for his part, Nick tells us that he is worried sick and clueless, even if he doesn’t show it. He tells us of the nag that his New York wife has become, her unhappiness at

them having to move to his home town Missouri. Her money with which he started

his club. Amy delivers a counterpoint in her giddily emotional diary in which she describes their descent from a golden couple to a stage where she is on the verge of fearing for her life. Nothing is as plain as it looks. Is Amy as innocent as she seems? Did Nick really do it? Why? How? What? You’ll have read the book to find out. Be warned, Flynn plays her readers like a master puppeteer. At first, you are sure Nick is the victim in the failed marriage. Oh wait, but it’s Amy that’s the injured party. No, it’s Nick. No, Amy. No, Nick...! Only too late do you realise that Flynn has you deceived, manipulated, lied to, and won over, all in a single sitting. Well written, inventive, chilling, dark, and most of all, it’s crime fiction at its absolute ingenious. There’s little doubt this is the thriller of the year.

In his first book after Satanic Verses Salman Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories is a delightful tale about a storyteller who loses his skill and a struggle against mysterious forces attempting to block the seas of inspiration from which all stories are derived. In this captivating adaptation for the stage, Haroun sets out on an adventure to restore the poisoned source of the sea of stories. On the way, he encounters many foes, all intent on draining the sea of all its storytelling powers.

TRANSPOTTING, IRVINE WELSH Irvine Welsh's controversial first novel, set on the heroin-addicted fringe of workingclass youth in Edinburgh, is yet another exploration of the dark side of scottishness. The main character, Mark Renton is at the center of a clique of nihilistic slacker junkies with no hopes and no possibilities, and only "mind-numbing and spiritcrushing" alternatives in the straight world they despise. This particular slice of humanity has nothing left but the blackest of humor and sharpness of wit.

SYED SHOAIB

shoaib.s@postnoon.com Please introduce yourself and your interests (marathon being one — how and when did you start running) here... I started running about 10 years back, with the Hyderabad 10k run. In the year 2003 to be precise, ie when I was in my late 30s.

How would you explain the karma theory between a husband and wife through a marathon?

SRINIVAS SETTY

I don’t know about the karma theory, but I can say that we managed to achieve a lot of what we did together.

Have your children taken to long-distance running? How did they cope initially when the two of you were away on runs? My son, Harsha, hasn’t, but the elder of my twin daughters, Dr Pragnya, has participated last year and not to be left out, the other one, Priyanka, plans to follow suit.

Every city today has its share of marathons, like Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai... which are the best lessons to be learnt? Mumbai marathon is one of the world’s richest and sought-after runs.

Should marathons always be connected to issues like charity or social causes? Why not?

Your observations on the marathon races in Olympics 2012. It was as expected very good to watch.

How come countries like Kenya, Ethiopia and Jamaica produce marathon winners consistently? One school of thought is that their body structure makes them superior; the other is that the training system in place there is what makes the difference.

What could happen if Usain Bolt ran in a marathon like he

now wants to play cricket and football?

each of these.

Anybody can run a marathon with a little bit of practice.

What is the most memorable memorabilia you have picked up from any of the seven continents in 2010?

How much can you learn about places like Kenya, Antarctica, Portugal, Norway, Los Angeles, Australia and several others when the major time you spend there is consumed through running? This is a huge question. It would require separate articles to discuss

Memories; we are the only couple to have done a grand slam of marathons, ie, running in marathons in all seven continents.

Were there any life-threatening experiences either in the North or South Pole? The plane we went to for the North Pole run was ordered to return just before landing when the runway developed a huge crack to let sea water in.

With so many lifestyle diseases dogging India, is being fit the only way out, other than dietary care? Yes, fitness is of outmost importance whatever your age may be.

the two of you to take some special Geography classes for high school students in Hyderabad since you have traversed the length and breadth of what they study in text books? My husband, Krishna Prasad, plans to go out on expeditions with the National Geographic team.

How many marathons have you run till date? That adds up to how many countries? How many kilometres? How many days? Cost involved? About 25–26 marathons; 15–16 countries. Only certain marathons are expensive.

Since you are a PG in soil microbiology, did you study the soil situation in Iceland, Prague or Washington DC? That is not possible while running. We make observations, though.

Do your passports read like an atlas? Who are your role model couples in the marathon world? Do we have such models in India?

Yes, of course.

Couples running marathons is catching up only now.

Will age slow down or decrease the distance of the marathon run in coming days?

Wouldn’t it be interesting for

So far age has not been a deterrent, time of course is short.

recent article in The New York Times looked into the reasons why it’s hard to make friends when we’re over the age of 30. Among them “people often experience internal shifts in how they approach friendship. Self-discovery gives way to selfknowledge, so you become pickier about whom you surround yourself with, said Marla Paul, author of The Friendship Crisis: Finding, Making, and Keeping Friends When You’re Not a Kid Anymore. From personal experience I know this is especially true with women. While playing the perfect wife, mother, career professional we’re missing the inner child within. At the end of the day we’re just too tired and disinclined to make new friends. Of course there’s Facebook, but as much as we hate to admit it, virtual friends don’t really count when push comes to shove. Sometimes you’ve just got to let your hair down. So go ahead and phone a friend or make new ones. You’d be surprised at how many will share your tears and cheers. Here’s my checklist for wavelength compatibility to the inner circle: n Ask your husband to choose between dresses A and B. If he says A you wear B. If he says B you wear A. n Wish your kids were awake when they’re asleep and sleep when they’re awake. n Unlike Santa Claus and tooth fairies that don’t exist, PMS is for real and how! n Stop berating your kids midsentence only to realise, “Oh no! I’m sounding just like Mum!” n Hot chocolate fudge is still comfort food. It contains zero calories. Period. n Beauty sleep is a necessity, not a luxury. n You already know the answer to “Do I look fat in this?” n Fifty Shades of Grey —read that, done that. If you’ve felt a sense of deja vu, gone “yes”, or “hau” and ticked off at least five of the above, I hear you girl. Welcome to the ya-ya sisterhood.

RELATIONSHIPS SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 2012

I AM ALL EARS

I

am a 36-year-old woman and am about to go through a divorce. My husband of eight years is having an affair and is already thinking of marrying this new woman. We also have a son who is four years old. My husband wants nothing to do with him. Whereas I want him to take responsibility. Please help.

TEEN INDEPENDENCE

Dear sad kid, I am sorry for what you are going through and am even sorrier for what your son will have to endure. It’s difficult when adults start acting like toddlers and go chasing butterflies. However, my advice to you would be to make sure your husband understand the decision he is making. If he does not get the point, legal methods must be adopted. Your son should no have to bear the consequences of his dad’s ignorance.

T

eenagers are famous for seeking independence from their parents, but research shows that many teens continue to spend time with their parents and that this shared time is important for teens' well-being, according to Penn State researchers. Furthermore, teens who spent more time with their fathers with others present had better social skills with peers, and teens who spent more time alone with their fathers had higher self-esteem.

M

ore often than not, there’s always at least one friend in your circle who decides to play matchmaker. Hopeless romantics that they are, they forget that opposites don’t always attract and who they think is Mr Right for you can just as easily be your Mr Wrong. Nishtha Singh, an animator from the city learnt it the hard way. Her best friend Preeti was single and was having trouble with relationships. Nishtha thought she’d step in. Incidentally, another close friend of hers, Rishabh was also single and was from the same profession. So she put two and two together and figured that they would get along well. So she talked Preeti into going out with him. The two hit it off and Nishtha was a proud fairy godmother. It wasn’t a happily ever after though. Five months down the line, an angry Preeti accused Nishta of ruining her life by introducing her to Rishabh. What went wrong she is yet to learn as both her friends have stopped talking to her since then. But Sandhya Ravichander feels proud of being called a matchmaker. She explains, “I have brought together seven couples till now. Three are happily married and two have separated. Most of my friends call me cupid because of this and I think if I can help ‘lovelorn’ souls like this, then why not?” She says it’s difficult to set two people up, but once you get to know the person better, love takes control, she just has to be the one bringing the couple together. But not everyone has such a lucky streak. Interior designer Richa Singh played matchmaker for her childhood friend Rahul. She thought she did a good deed but it all backfired when the girl she paired him became jealous of Richa and Rahul’s friendship and asked him to stay away from her. That is one of the side-effects of being a matchmaker. As the saying goes ‘marriages and matches are made in heaven’ but for Pooja and Abhishek, theirs was made in Class X(B) by Parul. “ I knew Parul had a great taste in men, no wonder she introduced me to Abhishek. Jokes aside, if it weren’t for her cajoling I would not have been so happy in my life,” says Pooja with a smile. The couple had been dating since then and it culminated in marriage three years ago. On the flip side, Avinash Dutt, a banker working in Durban has been an unfortunate victim of matchmaking by his friends and is now strongly against it. “I have been set up with three girls by my well-meaning friends, but sadly all three ended in disaster. I am no longer in the mood to be pushed around, so I made it clear to my friends that they should proba-

bly back off and allow me to do the searching instead.” Divya Taneja and Bhavna Mandal too share the same opinion. “Just because they can’t see anyone single and feel they have a right to have say in their friends personal life does not mean that they can make my life miserable by setting me up with every Tom, Dick and Harry. I went along the first time because I did not want to disappoint my bestie but soon I realised, she just thought I was sad without a partner,” says Bhavna. The verdict is clear. Spare a thought if you are tempted to play matchmaker. The consequences can be serious.

I am no longer in the mood to be pushed around, so I made it clear to my friends that they should probably back off and allow me to do the searching. Avinash Dutt

Friends always look out for each other, even in matters related to love. But is it time to draw the line when they take it upon themselves to help you find your soul mate?

I

think he has made a quality film and I cannot wait for it to come out,” he added. IANS

ctress Hema Malini, whose last production and directorial venture, Tell Me O Kkhuda, failed at the box office, says she is in no mood to invest money in another film as it is a risky proposition. “I made a film recently but it did not work at all, my heart broke. If you tell me to make another film, I will not. If you give me money

to make it, then I will. But I don’t want to make a film because it is too much of a risk,” the 63-year-old said. Tell Me... was meant to relaunch the actress’ daughter, Esha Deol, into Bollywood, but her efforts failed to reap the desired results. Now, while Hema is ready to act and dance, film production is not IANS on the anvil for her.

sing the names from a famous Persian literary love story, director Bela Bhansali Sehgal brings us the acting debut of Farah Khan, a successful choreographer and director in her own right, as Shirin, to Boman Irani’s Farhad in Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, an offbeat romantic comedy that focuses on two 40-something hapless souls

in search of love and a ‘happilyever-after’. Farah Khan plays the 40year-old, larger-than-life Parsi trust secretary Shirin Fugawala, in search of the man of her dreams. Cupid strikes, albeit late in life, during a lingerie shopping trip where Shirin meets clueless bra and panty salesman Farhad Pastakiya, played superbly by Boman Irani.

Movie: Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi Cast: Boman Irani, Farah Khan, Kavin Dave, Kurush Deboo, Daisy Irani Directed by: Bela Sehgal

Farhad, a 45-year-old goldenhearted Parsi bachelor, is a total loser in love. The only women in his life are his dominating mother Nargis and over-protective grandmother Siloo. The world has given up on him, but Farhad has never given up hope of finding ‘Ms. Right’. When Shirin walks in, he knows he has met his soul mate — the only obstacle now is convincing

his mother! With an all-star Parsi cast, the film depicts this lively community in an authentic and tasteful manner. Directed by Bela Bhansali Sehgal and produced by her director-brother Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film dissects the bittersweet and often hilarious emotions of finding true love and happiness as you age. to the justice they serve to the villainous adversary they seek revenge from. Everybody is clearly having a blast, so in translation, so do you. Of particular note, Jean-Claude Van Damme provides a standout performance as sneery and arrogant Jean Villain. The film’s biggest entertainment value comes from the constant one-liners from and between the action icons of the eras, as well as their presence and their dispatching of the bad guys. The banter here is certainly more hilarious and less bland than the first film —

there is much more chemistry between the characters. Their screen presence needs no explanation: Sylvester Stallone. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bruce Willis. Jean-Claude Van Damme. Chuck Norris. Dolph Lundgren. Jason Statham. Jet Li. Need one say more? Cult or mainstream, all these guys have hordes of fans — and they have good reason to. SUDOKU

KAKURO

How to play kakuro

SCRIBBLING PAD

Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

John Isner, seeded third in the US Open tune-up event, Winston-Salem Open, will face second-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych in Saturday’s final. WINSTON-SALEM: John Isner ousted top-seeded JoWilfried Tsonga of France 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7/3) Friday to stay on track to retain his WinstonSalem ATP title. Berdych defeated seventhseeded American Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-3 in the semi-finals on Friday. “I’m very, very happy to be back in the final,” said Isner, who prefers one more day of tournament action to an early arrival on the practice courts of Flushing Meadows, where the US Open begins on Monday. “I don’t like getting to Grand Slams early. If I’m playing the week before, I want to do as well as I can. I’m playing the final match, so I’m very satisfied with that. I’m looking to defend my title. I did it this year in Newport, so maybe I can pull it off again.” Isner broke Tsonga once to take the opening set and the Frenchman broke Isner once to win the second frame and level the match. Serving at 5-6 in the deciding third set Tsonga saved two match points — the first with an ace up the middle — but

John Isner of the USA serves to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France during the semi-finals at Wake Forest University on Friday in Winston-Salem. AFP finally couldn’t withstand the towering American, who belted 24 aces and wrapped up the victory in two hours and 13 minutes. Berdych, who accepted a late wild card entry into the

tournament, broke Querrey five times en route to victory in one hour and 39 minutes. Querrey delivered 18 aces but also had five double faults. “I don’t think I necessarily needed to break him five times,

but on the other hand, I lost my serve a couple of times. I was trying to get my chances,” said Berdych, who is seeking a second title of 2012 after a victory in Montpellier. In all the match featured eight breaks of serve. Berdych, ranked seventh in the world, had 18 break point chances against the big-serving American. “It is unusual,” Berdych said. “I can play with someone that is not serving as well as Sam and some of the other guys, and I’m struggling to break them for two, three sets, maybe he has service with more slice, spin. But you play with a player and you have a feeling and you know a little bit AFP how to read his serve.”

DALLAS, TEXAS: Italy’s Roberta Vinci advanced to her first final of the season by overpowering Bojana Jovanovski 6-0, 6-0 at the WTA Tour’s Texas Open on Thursday. The third seeded Vinci advanced to Friday’s final, where she will face second seed Jelena Jankovic who also won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4 over Aussie Casey Dellacqua. Vinci needed just 52 minutes to overwhelm Jovanovski as she improved her career record against the Serb to 3-0. “I played well. She played soso,” Vinci said. “But 6-0, 6-0 is not easy. You have to stay focused every point, every game.” Vinci posted her third career “double-bagel” victory.

NZ to follow on after Ashwin act

Having lost wickets at regular intervals, New Zealand have been forced to follow on after Ashwin troubled the batsmen claiming six wickets. G APARNA SAI

aparna.s@postnoon.com HYDERABAD: The Kiwis would not have been able to comprehend as to what hit them from the time their innings began. Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his third fivewicket haul when he scalped six for 31. Having halted India at 438 on Friday, New Zealand would have hoped to put up a near similar display with the bat but they failed miserably in their endeavour. The Kiwis ended their innings at 159 after the morning session’s play, adding to their overnight total of 106 for five. They fell short by 80 runs, to avoid follow-on. The morning began with Kruger van Wyk losing his wicket to Umesh Yadav when he was caught napping in front of the stumps with the score reading 111 for six. Doug Bracewell, who replaced van Wyk, was the next to depart. He was deceived by a superb ball from Pragyan Ojha which saw Dhoni dismantle the stumps and send the batsman back to the pavilion. James Franklin seemed to put up some resistance against the Indian bowlers but it did not prove fruitful as he lost partners at the other end. Meanwhile, the Indian bowlers had an amazing time with the ball. Ashwin’s six led the pack while Ohja claimed three and Yadav struck today morning. On Friday, it looked like India could possibly post a total of 500 but disciplined bowing by the Kiwis and a few miscalculated shots on part of the Indians saw them close their innings at 438. With New Zealand having asked to follow on, they would hope to change the tide in their favour at least in the second innings.

It was another long wait before play started on the third day of the first Test match between India and New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. Like the previous day, rains again played spoil-sport forcing the covers to stay on the

field for a large part of the morning. Most of the players could not help but cool their heels in the dressing room while waiting for their time to step on the field. The ground staff had immense work to be done. Both man and machine slogged to make the place worthy of playing.

Once the covers were removed and out-field dried, the spectators could not contain their happiness and cheered on. Soon the players also took their positions on the ground as the sun shone bright. It was at half past ten before the crowd could witness some action.

SPORTS SATURDAY, AUGUST 25, 2012

LONDON: Gary Cahill insists Chelsea are determined to remain in pole position in the Premier League title race when they face Newcastle on Saturday. The Blues moved to the top of the table for the first time in 21 months when they beat Reading 4-2 on Wednesday to make it two wins in two games at the start of the campaign. A third successive victory over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge will confirm the position of Roberto Di Matteo's side among the early pacesetters and maintain the upbeat mood that has followed victory in last season's Champions League final. That defeat of Bayern Munich delivered the one trophy that was missing from the club's trophy cabinet. But Di Matteo has already declared the priori-

ty this season is to close the gap on champions Manchester City and runners-up Manchester United after last season's disappointing sixth-place Premier League finish. And England defender Cahill confirmed the Italian's message has got through to Chelsea's players. "The manager stressed before the Reading game that we haven't been top of the league for a long time and, although it's early, it's nice to be sitting there," Cahill said. "It is something we needed to address this season and it has been drilled into us. "It's important that we challenge this year and we have made a good start." The form of Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard has provided an early highlight with the Belgiam quickly settling into life in the Premier League.

Arsenal gear up for physical battle STOKE-ON-TRENT: Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is bracing himself for his first taste of the ferocious assault that awaits the Gunners whenever they face Stoke at the Britannia Stadium. Mertesacker missed Arsenal's trip to Stoke last season but is all too aware of the challenge that will confront his team-mates in their second match of the Premier League season on Sunday. Meetings between the two clubs in recent years have been marked by the clash of playing styles, with Gunners manager

Arsene Wenger frequently critical of Stoke's more direct approach. Relations hit a low two years ago when Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey suffered a badly broken leg following a challenge by Ryan Shawcross that earned the Stoke defender a red card. Backed by a passionate home crowd, Tony Pulis's Stoke will do everything they can to unsettle the visitors. And German international Mertesacker admits Wenger's side have been preparing to handle the aerial bombardment and physical challenge they will face.
