DOUBLE TROUBLE SEALS INDIA’S FATE Double centuries from Ricky Ponting and Aussie captain Michael Clarke drove the final nail into India’s already scarred coffin in the fourth Test at Adelaide. Australia declared at 604, which means India has an incredibly slim chance of winning the match. So with 3-1 off the cards, all that’s left is the struggle to draw. At least 100 firms are ready to meet the required stipulations, but have been prevented from doing so by red tape. So why the suspense?

ow much do you know about the security personnel you have paid for? Barring the agency’s name and its executive, nothing much, right? Today, most people and establishments go for private security as the only option but few know that these agencies are all unlicensed and their credibility and dependability therefore remain much to be desired. It’s not entirely their fault, though. Postnoon learnt that at least a 100 of the 2,000 private security agencies in the State are waiting for the government license for nearly a year now. They had applied for it in March last under the Private Security (Regulation) Act 2005. It had come into effect in Andhra Pradesh in 2008. There is no indication as yet

other states and for that matter policemen in the City assigned to the Octopus and Greyhounds are being given a risk allowance as much as 50 to 60 per cent of their basic pay, the men posted in the bomb squads are not getting any. Ironically, there are only five bomb disposal squads, one team each for five zones, while there are about 10 teams to protect the VIPs. If there is more than one threat in a zone, then the team from another zone has to be mobilised. A highly placed source in the security wing said, “Only when there is a bomb blast, the government thinks of fortifying bomb squads or getting new equipment. We get nearly a 100 calls in a year and every time we go into the field, it is a do-or-die situation. Moreover, bomb or no bomb, we have to go there and see to it that the potential threat is mitigated. Despite this, we’re not compensated.” Intelligence Security Wing in Khairatabad made a proposal
license for functioning, it becomes a tricky situation if things go wrong. “A weapon license is our least worry,” said Shafiq. “But we need the trade license to work effectively and meaningfully.” Capt DK Giri of SHARP Detective Agencies in Trimulgherry said, the Act was implemented in 12 states but AP is still sitting over it. Not having a license allows the local police to browbeat the agencies which do a legitimate job, many complain. “Perhaps, not giving them a license suits them,” remarked a security agency chief who did not to be identified. There are in all some 50,000 security guards working in various agencies. The Association leaders say they will appeal to the Chief Minister to get the issue resolved at the earliest.
when YS Rajasekhara Reddy was the Chief Minister. “Even as the proposal was about to get approved we lost our CM and since then the file hasn’t moved,” he added. The bomb disposal squad has 80 members with 15 teams and it is headed by an officer of the rank of deputy commissioner of police. Apart from them, there is only one threat call team which consists of six members and sniffer dogs. The Central government allots two to three seats to each state in certain colleges where bomb squads are trained. Few such colleges are ITBP training centre in Uttarakand and BSF training centre in Bihar and NSG training centre in Haryana. However, most of our men are trained at the Intelligence Security Centre located in Moinabad. City Security Wing DCP B Malla Reddy said, “Yes, there is no risk allowance paid to the our men and we have already escalated the matter to the state government.”

It looks scenic from afar with a jogger’s track around it, but a closer look at the lake reveals filthy and contaminated water. Somehow, a blind eye has been turned to these problems and conservation of the lake is an urgent requirement. There are sand bags piled in a corner and sand has been poured on top of it to make it appear like a normal piece of land. What’s more, there is a water pump installed in the lake as well. In fact, according to lake rules, there shouldn’t be any construction on the buffer zone of nine metres for a lake less than 25 acres and 30 metres from the FTL for a lake larger than 25 acres. Since the Medikunta Cheruvu is less than 25 acres, so the buffer zone of nine metres applies to it. Unfortunately, right next to

the stones that mark the FTL are apartments, offices and even a road that literally touches the FTL stones. This clearly violates the lake protection rules. Currently, there is a building that is under construction, which almost touches the FTL stones. Confirms Paul Richards, a senior software engineer at an IT company in the vicinity, “I hang out with my colleagues here and I have never seen the lake being cleaned. In fact, it has only gotten worse. The lake emits an unbearable stench when it rains due to the waste that is disposed here.” Everyone who comes by the pan shop on the banks of the lake, stops by it smoking and drinking coffee and then conveniently throw the trash into the lake, says M Krishna, a software engineer working in the area. “The water is so contaminated that you can see plastic bottles, cola cans, cigarette butts and

On the other hand, Murali Rao, an employee in the same company, says that the lake has become cleaner after the afore mentioned IT company took it under its wings. “You can still spot rare migratory birds here, which is impossible near any other lake in the City,” he says. However, Dr Jasveer Jairath, member, SOUL, says that the lake has been shrinking and is being misused. “How can they turn a blind eye to the fact that there is encroachment?” she questions. Despite repeated attempts to contact HMDA and the IT company that takes care of the lake, they remained unavailable for comment. Dr Ramesh Chandra, senior environmental engineer in APPCB says that the water isn’t as polluted as other lakes in the City. “The reports suggest that the water is quite clean,” he defends.

ith the arrest of Sunil Reddy, it will be the turn of YSRC chief Jaganmohan Reddy to be arrested by the CBI, senior TDP leader Gali Muddu Krishnama Naidu said. Speaking to the media, GMK Naidu said that “Jagan’s scene” has reached a climax and he might be arrested shortly by the CBI sleuths. He claimed that Jagan’s parleys with the Congress leadership have failed and no settlement was reached.
umaish represents the culture of Hyderabad. The ambience here is unique and it is one of the best hangouts to spend quality time with your family. The 72nd All India Industrial Exhibition boasts of 2,500 stalls put up by traders from across the country. What is the takeaway? If nothing else, surely it is a plastic carry bag. While the municipal authorities banned the use of plastic carry bags, the alternative allowed is to buy a plastic carry bag. The ban is imposing additional penalty on people and making the producers of plastic bags richer. People are surprised if the ban is to minimise the use of plastic or make the manufacturers rich. Numaish is for now a cash cow for the plastic bag makers. Like every year, this year too shopkeepers were advised to use only paper/leaf plates, paper cups, paper bags in the exhibition and not to use the coloured and recycled plastic bags with a thickness of less than 40 microns, but no one seems to be serious about it. Step into the exhibition grounds and you can witness shoppers carrying plastic bags in every corner. Shoppers do have their own reasons on the use of the plastic covers or bags. “It’s not possible to carry jute or cloth bags every time you go for shopping. Moreover the shopkeepers also provide us plastic bags or covers. It’s the shopkeepers who should provide us with jute or cloth bags,” said Vandana J, a shopper.
Polythene carry bags are being freely used at the exhibition despite the ban The stall keepers too are not happy. “Many customers don’t like bags made of cloth and jute and they think they are more expensive when compared to plastic bags or covers. Moreover, many customers don’t prefer to buy cloth bags and jute bags as it comes only at a price whereas the plastic covers are usually given free of cost,” said Mukesh Kumar, owner of the Rajasthan Lac Bangles store. Meanwhile, a few stall-owners are complying with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and implementing the plas-
tic ban in their respective stalls. Nirmala, a customer was seen arguing with a stall-owner at a grocery stall after he asked for `3 for a polythene bag. After a few minutes, she was forced to pay `3 as she had nothing else to carry her purchase in. “Earlier, when we used to buy vegetables and groceries, vendors supplied bags free of cost. Suddenly, they have started collecting anything between `3 and `5 for a carry bag, depending on their size,” she said. However, many stall owners are finding it hard to convince customers to get their own carry bags or

he annual Golconda Derby is round the corner and all racing enthusiasts are gung-ho about the upcoming races. Horse racing is surely a glamorous sport, with handsome horses and redblooded jockeys bracing up for the contest. But not many spare a thought about the people who actually do the hardest and most menial jobs off the racecourse. They are the syces or horses’ groomsmen. They need their share of credit too, as, after all, they ensure the well-being of the horses. Postnoon spoke to a syce at Hyderbad Race Club (HRC) and explores the dimensions of his job as well as his interesting experiences. Simhachalam, a soft-spoken man, does not drop his smile during the entire conversation. Hailing from a village in Srikakulam district, he came to the City and joined as a junior syce at HRC in 1984. Just a young lad then, he soon developed a love for the horses. And today, after almost 30 years into the job, he cannot imagine taking up any other profession. nd, finally the government decides to suspend the much-debated jumbling system for the Intermediate practical examinations for this academic year. Announcing this minister for Secondary Education K Parthasaradhy on Tuesday said the decision was taken after several Junior Colleges Association and political parties represented that the students of Telangana region are under pressure of catching up with lost time and the switch-over would cause further problems for them. He said the Association also assured the government in writing that they would not oppose the jumbling system, if it was introduced from next academic year. Jumbling system in theory examination was being implemented for the last two years, but it was not implemented for practical examinations due to poor laboratory facilities in the colleges. Therefore, the government has spent `10 crore for development of laboratory facilities in government junior colleges and instructed the private colleges to set up laboratories as per rules. “It was found that there was no laboratory facility in 60 to 65 percent of private colleges. Deranged man kills nine Forty injured and 24 vehicles damaged before the bus driven by a mentally disturbed State transport driver was overtaken and stopped by the police in Pune. PUNE: At least nine people were killed, 40 injured and more than two dozen vehicles damaged when a mentally disturbed staffer of the government bus service hijacked a state transport (ST) bus and sped blindly through the streets of this Maharashtra city Wednesday, police said. "So far, nine pedestrians, including two children, have been killed in the incident and around 40 injured," an official of Pune police control said. The condition of at least five of the injured, being treated at the Sassoon Hospital, is reported to be serious. More than two
dozen vehicles have been damaged in the incident, he added. Santosh Mane, a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) driver, was finally overtaken and arrested from the Nilayam Talkies area, around 25 km from the Swargate ST Depot from where it was hijacked, the official said. The incident happened shortly before 8 am when Mane suddenly climbed into a PuneSatara-Pune bus at the Swargate ST Depot and zoomed off, driving at a high speed on the wrong side of the road, taking the vehicles and people unawares.

PM joins Twitter, 13,000 followers and counting NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has joined popular microblogging site Twitter — aiming to capture the attention of young Indians and inform people about the work done by his office through 140 characters. The account attracted nearly 13,000 followers within 24 hours of being set up. Within hours of the
account, which has a smiling profile picture of the prime minister, set up late Monday, Manmohan Singh attracted some 13,000 followers with just four tweets till Tuesday evening. Three of them were posted Monday night and only one a day after. The account refers to the PMO and it would be handled by his media team. IANS
However, top officials were not able to confirm whether the bus was occupied by passengers or not at the morning peak travel time, or Mane's motives in his wayward behavior. According to police, Mane sped off for nearly 25 km, ramming stationary or moving vehicles en route and crushing or knocking off pedestrians before he was nabbed by a police party at Dandekar Flyover, the official said. Though police officials refused to confirm, eyewitnesses said that a couple of cops on duty managed to clamber aboard the moving bus and
fired some rounds in the air to scare the driver. The eyewitnesses said that they shouted out to the cops to fire at the tyres of the speeding bus to force it to stop, but it was not clear whether they were heard. Fire brigade officials and local residents helped police bring the vehicle under control and help move the injured to nearby hospitals. Senior officials rushed to the scene and authorities requisitioned a crane to remove the bus and other damaged vehicles along the route to clear the road for normal traffic. IANS

Hazare fires another slapping salvo RALEGAON SIDDHI: In remarks that could stoke a fresh controversy, Gandhian Anna Hazare on Tuesday said a person is left with no option other than going for a slap when his power of tolerance of corruption runs out. "When a man's power of tolerance runs out, then whoever is in front of you, if a slap is given, then the brain is put back in place. That is the only road open now", Hazare told reporters after watching the Hindi film Gali Gali Chor Hai' based on the common man's fight against corruption. A special screening of the movie was held for the anti-graft crusader at his native village Ralegan Siddhi tonight in the presence of the film's crew. PTI
Rushdie lashes out at ‘black farce’ over virtual shut-off JAIPUR: Twenty-four years after The Satanic Verses was banned, its India-born author Salman Rushdie was again under attack on Tuesday and forced to cancel his address via videolink to the Jaipur Literature Festival, triggering outrage among organisers, writers and visitors who called it an assault on the freedom of expression. Rushdie termed the situation a "black farce". From a cerebral gathering of celebrities and others to a volatile mix of religion and politics, Asia's largest literary festival found itself dogged by controversy on its concluding day over the New York-based Rushdie, who initially called off his visit and then his much-anticipated video address over security threats. "Threat of violence by Muslim groups stifled free speech today. In a democracy all get to speak, not just the ones making threats," Rushdie tweeted. "Videolink cancellation: awful." After the cancellation, the festival ended on a sombre note, with participants' spirits only marginally lifted during a lively debate about man and god at the close. Rushdie later said he was shocked that even his video-conference address was unacceptable and termed the entire controversy a "black farce". He said the real enemies of Islam were its extremist leaders, and blamed the Indian government for giving into them. He also called the threat to his life "fabricated" and termed himself foolish for believing it.

Congress defends Rajasthan CM NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday sought to play down the decision of the party-led Rajasthan government against allowing Salman Rushdie to address the Jaipur Literature Festival via a video link and said the organisers had no other choice in view of protests at the venue. Party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury said the organisers had not been left with "any other choice" in view of the protests. "It was pretty shocking that not only my physical presence, even the screening of video image was unacceptable," Rushdie said from London in a
video conference interview to a television channel. Organiser Sanjoy Roy had announced Tuesday morning that Rushdie, 64, would indeed be addressing the gathering at 3.45pm. But uncertainty began soon after, following protests by Muslim groups at the venue, Diggi Palace. A couple of hours later, police withdrew permission and an emotional Roy announced that it was cancelled. Minutes before Rushdie was to speak, dozens of Muslims started praying in the venue's courtyard. They tried to downplay the connection with Rushdie's speech but some of them threatened trouble and even bloodshed if the address by a "criminal writer" went ahead. "We have been pushed to the wall," Roy said. IANS

US indispensable in world affairs: Obama WASHINGTON,
Haditha killer marine free CAMP PENDLETON: A US Marine accused over the killing of 24 Iraqis in 2005 was demoted Tuesday but will serve no time behind bars, a judge ruled, as locals in Iraq condemned the light sentence. Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, who led an eight-man squad whose other members have all been let off, was sentenced to 90 days confinement but he will not serve them under a deal with prosecutors. The 31-year-old admitted one count of negligent dereliction of duty Monday, but charges of manslaughter over the killings — whose victims included women and children — were dropped as part of a plea deal. Wuterich — who denied he was a “cold-blooded baby-killer” — was sentenced to 90 days of confinement and reduction to private (E-1), said a statement from Camp Pendleton, California, where he has been on court martial. In all, 24 Iraqi civilians were killed — 19 in several houses along with five men who pulled up in a car where the marines were on patrol in the Iraqi town of Haditha on November 19, 2005. AFP

US President Barack Obama delivers his State of the Union address on Tuesday in Washington, DC. AFP Iran Obama said a peaceful outcome was still possible in the international standoff with Iran over its nuclear ambitions while he declined to rule out the military option. His remarks suggested the window for diplomacy was narrowing at a time when Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz — a key waterway for the world’s oil — in the face of sanctions. “Let there be no doubt: America is determined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and I will take no options off the table to achieve that goal,” the president declared. “But a peaceful resolution of this issue is still possible, and far better,” the president said.
Israel and Syria “Our iron-clad commitment to Israel’s security has meant the closest military cooperation between our two countries in history,” Obama said. “In Syria, I have no doubt that the Assad regime will soon discover that the forces of change can’t be reversed, and that human dignity can’t be denied,” he said, referring to the crackdown on protests. He also announced the creation of a special unit to investigate dodgy mortgage, as he stepped up the pressure on the country’s big banks. “This new unit will hold accountable those who broke the law, speed assistance to homeowners, and help turn the page on an era of recklessness,” he said. ‘Go back to manufacturing’ WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama proposed on Tuesday to radically shift the US economy back to a manufacturing base after decades of ceding jobs in goods production to factory-heavy countries like China. In a move to rebuild the weakened economy, create jobs and bolster his re-election chances in November, Obama said the US has an opportunity to wrest goods production from rivals like China and burnish the ‘Made in USA’ label. “Tonight, I want to speak about how we move forward, and lay out a blueprint for an economy that’s built to last,” Obama told Congress in his annual State of the Union speech. “This blueprint begins with American manufacturing.” He laid out a list of new policies aimed at helping manufacturing business in the US, and removing support for those who shift US jobs overseas. They included tax breaks for more investment and job creation inside the country, support for education and research that feeds the manufacturing sector, and stepped-up protection against subsidised imports and pirated goods — naming China as the main target. “My message to business leaders is simple: Ask yourselves what you can do to bring jobs back to your country, and your country will do everything we can to help you succeed.”
Obama looks to Buffet tax plan President Barack Obama demanded millionaires pay at
least 30 per cent tax, in an election-tinged State of the Union address that nodded to anger over the low tax rate of his rival Mitt Romney. “We need to change our tax code so that people like me, and an awful lot of Members of Congress, pay our fair share of taxes,” Obama said in remarks to a joint session of Congress that were met with sporadic, partisan applause. “If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 per cent in taxes.” Pledging no tax increases for those earning under $250,000 a year, Obama doubled-down on
an election-year gambit, which casts him as a champion of America’s middle-class. “If you make under $250,000 a year, like 98 per cent of American families, your taxes shouldn’t go up. You’re the ones struggling with rising costs and stagnant wages. You’re the ones who need relief,” he said. Obama also proposed eliminating housing, healthcare, retirement and childcare tax breaks for millionaires.

Thompson, named Yahoo! The former PayPal chief stressed that Yahoo! needed to become an agile and “disruptive” force technology-wise to claw back Internet turf and advertising dollars lost to competitors like Google and Facebook. “Yahoo! is fundamentally both a media company and a technology company. We need to be great at both,” he told analysts in a conference call. “We will get speed back into the equation and move aggressively.” Yahoo! fourth-quarter net earnings declined 5.3 per cent in a year. DAVOS: The world’s political
SAN FRANCISCO: Google said on Tuesday it is revising its privacy policies and changing how it uses data from users of its services to provide more personalised search results and advertisements. The Mountain View, California-based Internet giant said the changes are designed to improve the user experience across the various Google products, which range from Web search to Gmail to Google+ to YouTube. Google said it is combining more than 60 privacy policies for its various services into a single policy that will take effect from March 1. “We’re rolling out a new main privacy policy that covers

we offer,” she said. Google noted that “regulators globally have been calling for shorter, simpler privacy policies” and said it would inform users of the changes by email and with a notice on the Google.com home page. Google has found itself under increasing scrutiny from European and US regulators as it has grown from a scrappy startup into an Internet titan,
branching out into various businesses including online mapping, shopping and travel and providing software for mobile phones and tablet computers. The changes to Google’s privacy policies are certain to draw further attention in Washington and Brussels and announcing them more than a month ahead of time appeared to be a bid to provide time for them to be digested. Whitten said instead of having terms of service for individual products, Google was revising its terms of service to cover numerous products. Google account users will have to accept the new terms of service to continue using their accounts. AFP

rank Wuterich will walk free. The only US marine held responsible for the heinous massacre of 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha in 2005 is alleged to have struck a plea bargain. Needless to say the event have provoked widespread protests in Iraq, a country still grimly battling immense internal demons. The Haditha massacre marked a turning point in the Iraq war, coming amidst an insurgent onslaught that ripped apart George W Bush’s announcement of ‘Mission Accomplished’. The US army was at its nadir, illequipped to fight a war against an enemy that blended into the civilian population. Like the later rape and massacre in Mahmudiya, so chillingly narrated in Jim Frederick’s superb Black Hearts, Haditha stands as testament to man’s cruelty in the theatre of war. Wuterich walking free is the worst possible indictment to a country that stands for honour and freedom. For all the optimism in Obama’s State of the Union address this morning, incidents like these will forever call American motives into question.

o much drama has been unfolding over Booker-winner author Salman Rushdie’s proposed visit to the Jaipur Literary Festival, with several groups pitting themselves for and against his visit. Ironically, Rushdie had attended the Festival in 2007 and there was hardly any protest then. This time the scenario is different, with Assembly polls to five States set to commence shortly. No wonder the love-hate soap opera over his visit has reached a crescendo. In 1988, the author had courted controversy (and invited a prize for his head from Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the spiritual leader of Iran) with his book The Satanic Verses, which allegedly made derogatory references to the Prophet. The book has since then been banned in 12 countries including India. Twenty-five years have passed and even Iran is no longer keen on persecuting him but the ‘guardians of the faith’ in India refuse to dilute their aggressive approach. Rushdie called off his visit over security threat inputs he received from Mumbai and Rajasthan police, only to thunder via Twitter that the Rajasthan government had cooked up the threat story to keep him off the conclave and avoid unnecessary tensions. An angry Rajasthan CM said the threats were real and were passed on by the Centre whereas the Mumbai cops said they did not receive any threat intelligence. In another development, four authors found themselves in a legal soup when they read out passages from The Satanic Verses at the

I know this is not a paper targeted for the younger audience but they are avid readers and pick up the paper if it is lying in front of them. You may blame it on my greying hair or the receding hairline but what I don't appreciate is the exhibition of their various body parts. It’s a trend that I noticed in your paper, not now but since the day it went into publishing. Please take extra care, when you print such pictures because your paper is good and doesn't need the attention.
I am a grandfather with small kids in the house. I have been a regular reader of your paper and have liked it even if sometimes I have found certain pictures to be bold considering the modern population it caters to. But, today's paper has totally broken the barriers of obscenity. The picture on the breast implants is totally obscene and unnecessary. Creating awareness is a good thing but with such pictures does not give a good impression on the paper. I am very disappointed with the content management.

Husain laughs at saffron love for ‘Satanic’ Festival to justify Rushdie’s creative freedom — only to find themselves booked under law to prosecute inciters of communal violence. With so many feet muddying the waters, it also triggered a great opportunity for the specialists who fish in troubled waters — the politicians. The BJP and its allied outfits have come out in support of Rushdie and his freedom of expression, citing India’s culture of tolerance. They were also quick to point out that it was the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and the policy of minority appeasement by the Congress government, which had robbed the Festival of the esteemed presence of a hallowed litterateur. In a repeat of the several political debacles that took place recently, the move has only done damage to the BJP by exposing its doublespeak and lack of credibility. The saffron party was vocal in its attack on MF Husain and its offshoot organisations hounded him with dozens of cases across the country and vandalised his works wherever possible. He breathed his last not as Indian but as a Qatari, longing for India and homemade food. His crime — objectionable depiction of Indian goddesses in his paintings. Even after his death, the BJP refused to go back on its stand that his artistic freedom was not acceptable to them. Now let’s break this down to simple equations. Rushdie ‘insults’ Islam — acceptable. Husain ‘insults’ Hinduism — not acceptable. Both were exercising their creative freedom. Both are internationally acclaimed by critics and fans alike for their contributions to their respective fields. We would like the BJP to explain the rocket science they have used to differentiate between the two and take separate stands. Let the music play
This is with regards to your story Max Urbana dated January 24 in Postnoon. I think that the story with specific facts and figures about the need for sustainable development in cities is particularly relevant in our society. I read somewhere that for every dollar India spends on infrastructure, China spends seven. So we can be sure it will be better equipped to deal with the growth and development in the near future. And, we can be as sure that at the current rate, we will suffer badly. The government should take cognisance of this need and take extensive measures to plan our urban spaces better or we are all heading into a deep mess. Kavita Krisnamurthy Himayathnagar
I must agree with the singer Gary Lawyer, more international bands should be allowed to play in India. The only places that get even a dekko of these visitors are Bengaluru and Mumbai. What about Delhi or for that matter even Hyderabad? There is some or the other glitch when it comes to international concerts. It’s surprising that Gary says western music is not that widespread in India. I beg to differ. Many keep smoking even after cancer diagnosis
Anishaa Kumar feedback@postnoon.com
N
owadays it isn’t uncommon to find someone complaining of back pain. We are in a world where we are in a constant race against time. A back problem could be a major deterrent to your daily schedule. Back problems could be due to various reasons and of various intensities. In fact, people of all age-groups are being affected by back pain.
Common causes According to Dr Alok Ranjan, senior consultant neurosurgeon, Apollo Hospitals, “The most common cause of back problems is posture related mechanical problems due to not sitting properly or lack of exercise. This is very common with software professionals. The second is lumbar disc disease and third is infection of the spine. In India, tuberculosis
Oh that hurts! is the most common cause for spine infection. If someone has back pain and is not seeing any improvement with exercise then they would require X-rays and other investigations and treatment.”
Is surgery necessary? According to Dr Sanjog Mathur, senior consultant spine surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, “Most back problems do not need surgery but certain require early attention and surgery. Such emergency situations include Cauda equina syndrome that is caused due to the compression of the nerves, the second such situation is instability of the spine and the third is scoliosis or curvature of the spine.” According to Dr Sanjog the other situations which may require surgery include trauma resulting in fracture of the spine and tumour in the spine. Osteoporosis is also rapidly
becoming a cause of spinal problems.
Necessary but is it safe? The mere thought of surgery brings fear to our minds. Many questions crop up. According to Dr Sanjog, “Surgery is safe if done by a good surgeon so one should keep that in mind. Back problems can be treated with exercises for up to perhaps four weeks but even after four weeks if the back problem does not subside then one must visit a doctor. Treat back problems as early as possible.”
Keep your back fit Basically one should maintain a good posture at one’s work station, exercise regularly, have a nutritious diet which includes calcium and avoid smoking and drinking, says Dr Sanjog. Here Dr Sanjog highlights an interesting point, “Smoking is becom-
ing one of the main causes of back problems. Smoking is said to cause degeneration of the disk.” According to Dr Alok, “Exercise is the best way to take care of your back. For back problems doctors suggest isometric back exercises. If you do not like to exercise, swimming is the best alternative.”
Tips for a healthier back
WASHINGTON: A large number of people, believe it or not, continue to puff away merrily even after being diagnosed with lung and colorectal (large intestine) cancer. Putting a halt to smoking after a cancer diagnosis is important because it can negatively affect patients’ responses to treatments, their subsequent cancer risk and, potentially, their survival. Elyse R Park from the Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard Medical School in Boston led a team that looked to see how many patients quit smoking around the time of a cancer diagnosis, and which smokers were most likely to quit. The investigators determined smoking rates around the time of diagnosis and five months after diagnosis in 5,338 lung and colorectal cancer patients, the journal Cancer reports.
n Comfortable footwear is the
first pre-requisite. n Maintain correct posture.
Do not slouch. n Take care while lifting
something heavy. n Follow simple back exercises. n Your mattress is important.
In case you have a back pain when you get up in the morning it could be because of a bad mattress. n Vitamin D and calcium deficiency can also cause back pain, Vitamin D deficiency has become very common problem in elders. Include food with Vitamin D and calcium in your diet. At diagnosis, 39 per cent of lung cancer patients and 14 per cent of colorectal cancer patients were smoking. Five months later, 14 per cent of lung cancer patients and 9 per cent of colorectal cancer patients were still smoking, according to a Harvard statement. These results indicate that a substantial minority of cancer patients continue to smoke after being diagnosed. Also, although lung cancer patients have higher rates of smoking at diagnosis and following diagnosis, colorectal cancer patients are less likely to quit smoking following diagnosis. Colorectal cancer patients who continued to smoke tended to be male, completed less education, uninsured, not have had surgery, and once smoked a high number of cigarettes per day. “These findings can help cancer clinicians identify patients who are at risk for smoking and guide tobacco counselling treatment development for cancer patients,” said Park. While advertising bans do work, an outright ban would be the most effective policy tool for reducing fast food consumption
WASHINGTON: Banning ads that promote junk foods among children is likely to cut down their consumption, says a study based on an experiment in a Canadian province. Canada had proscribed fast food ads in its Quebec province between 1984 and 1992, resulting between 11-22 million fewer fast-food meals being eaten per year, according to Kathy Baylis, an economist from the University of Illinois in the US. Advertising bans do work, but an outright ban covering the entire US media market would be the most effective policy tool for reducing fastfood consumption in children, adds Baylis, professor of agricultural and consumer economics at Illinois. Baylis and co-author Tirtha Dhar from University of British Columbia found evidence that the ban reduced fast-food expenditures by 13 per cent per week in French-speaking households in Quebec province in Canada. It worked out to between 11-22 million fewer fast-food meals being eaten per year, or 2.2-4.4 billion fewer calories consumed by children, according to an Illinois statement.
“What we found is that advertising bans are most effective when children live in an isolated media market, and it’s only because they’re in an isolated media market that they’re getting these effects,” she said. “If any state on its own decided to do this, it would be problematic.” “Obviously, the internet has exploded since then, and computer games have also risen in popularity. So we don’t know how well a television
ban would work when children are spending an increasing amount of time online rather than watching TV,” Baylis added. “So it would be very hard to enforce an internet ban, and the only way to tackle it would be how they’re doing it in Quebec, which is to prohibit advertising websites for junk food during cartoons, or even on product packaging in stores,” she concludes. ollution levels have been steadily rising over the years and so has the incidence of asthma. “Factors like increased pollutants, smoking, air conditioned environment, mosquito repellants, deodorants, alcohol and stress have been contributing to the increase in the incidence of asthma,” says Dr Mohd Hidayath Hussain, consultant pulmonologist at Mahavir Hospital. He goes on to add that asthma is not a disease but a disorder. “In some cases it sets in early in children and at other times it could affect adults as well. Asthma can also be triggered due to allergy to certain types of foods like beans and peanuts. So an effective way to control asthma would be to first identify trigger factors and then avoid them,” he says. It is best to steer clear of flowers, construction activity, aerosol sprays, new plants, canned foods, paints etc to avoid an asthmatic attack, he explains. In certain people eggs, certain types of fish and oranges could also trigger an attack. There are also medicines that can effectively control asthma. “There are both oral tablets and inhalers available for the control and treatment of asthma. Of these inhalers are a better option since it is a target based therapy. Also since the dosage is rather low in inhalers they can be taken over a longer period of time,” says Dr Hidayath. He goes on to add that a monthly visit to the doctor for asthma patients is recommended. “This helps monitor their condition and medication can be adjusted accordingly,” he explains, adding, “Most people respond better to different types of inhalers. Hence a frequent visit to the doctor can help determine the best course of treatment.” Since there are some steroid based inhalers available as well, there are several concerns that are raised as well about their safety. But Dr Hidayath says, “Steroid based inhalers are perfectly safe as the dosage is low. But at the same time it is important to gargle regularly as prolonged usage of these can lead to candidiasis and certain dental infections as well.”

Audiences today love sensible cinema
Born and brought up in Srikakulam, actor Vamsee Krishna’s foray into films was not exactly a bed of roses. He may have lacked a godfather, but he made up for it with passion and perseverance

e was stuck in a mundane 9 to 6 job, but then opportunity knocked on Vamsee Krishna’s door with the Andhra Idol competition in 2006. After defeating 8,000 contestants, Vamsee Krishna soon became the indispensable son of Tollywood. He radiates confidence and looks upbeat as he gets ready to chat with us. As we wonder what makes the man so full of energy, he tells us, “There is a lot happening of late — it has made me so busy, but it couldn’t get any better.” It was far from an easy
journey for Vamsee, but he reflects on it positively. “I have read around 75 scripts from 40 people — if they were good stories, there were no producers; and if there were producers, none had any knowledge of how they wanted to make the movie. It was not the easiest of times I went through,” he says with a smile, adding, “but all that is history — today, I am happy working on my new film called Parents. On what the audience can expect to see, Vamsee tells us, “This is a genuine film, and I mean it. There is no regular, done-to-death kind of dialogues in this film. If you are looking for
item numbers and the likes, this is just not the film. While movies today have extremely emotional outbursts, this one is about controlling them.” The cast of the film includes veteran actor K Vishwanath, Tanikella Bharani, Ruchika Babbar, Pavithra Lokesh and Krishnudu. On his experiences working with them, Vamsee says, “I am an ardent fan of Vishwanath sir. For the movie Subhapradham, I did a guest role because I wanted to work with him, albeit in a miniscule role. So when Vishwanath sir agreed to work in Parents, I was elated. Interestingly, he wore his own costumes, and all the scenes that needed him were

shot at his own place.” Vamsee took over the burden of ensuring that the film is completed and presented on time. He tells us, “A hit producer initially saw the script and decided to produce it. After making me wait for a few months, he backed out. Then I knew it was now or never, so I went for it. My friends too, pitched in without question, but with the confidence that if I make a film, it will be a good one. I am grateful to them for having that faith in me.” In an industry that runs on mega-budgets, how does he plan to ensure an audience then? “Parents is not a movie made with big budgets. It would be
foolish to do that and expect great returns. But what I believe is that while there is an audience for the pot-boilers, a large segment of the audience also looks forward to sensible cinema and I am catering to them.” He adds, “The best compliment I got for this film was during the audio launch of the movie, when Tammaraddy Bharadwaj said, “Ee cinema choodakapote, mee karma (It’s your bad luck if you don’t watch this movie).” And as part of an audience seeking sensible cinema, we look forward to watching the movie Parents — perhaps, this will be the movie that sets the benchmark for more movies to come.

AR RAHMAN’S MUSIC
Acclaimed director Gautham Menon is back with his second Hindi film after a gap of 11 years and expectations are definitely high

H
e is perhaps one of the most successful directors that the Tamil and Telugu film industry can boast of today but Gautham Vasudev Menon remains nonchalant. While link-ups between the lead pair of his upcoming Hindi film, Ek Deewana Tha, continue to make news every day, Gautham doesn’t dwell on it too much. He instead prefers to set the record straight. “Since I had AR Rahman for music, I didn’t think I needed big stars to be a part of my film,” informs Gautham who is nonetheless happy with the outcome and the work done by Prateik and Amy. Talking about both the actors, he says, “Both are very competent. Prateik is completely a director’s actor and Amy is really fresh. It was indeed a pleasure to work with them.” The film, Ek Deewana Tha, which is a throw back at the old world charm, has had a successful run in its Tamil and Telugu versions. And each version has had a different ending; in fact in its Hindi one, Gautham has tried a completely different ending, which he is keeping completely guarded. “I thought it was a story that could be told well in Hindi too, and I have tried an ending, which I thought will go down well with the Hindi audience,” offers the award-winning director. “The whole film has gone through a lot of changes, I even had a new director of photography for the film and of course the ending is new. In fact, it will be new to Hindi films too,” shares Gautham. Quiz the director on why he stayed away from Hindi films for so long and Gautham is quick to answer, “For me Hindi is just another language, I enjoy filmmaking be it in any language. As long as there is a story to tell, I will make a film. Of course, Hindi does have a wider audience and a bigger reach and while I can read and write Hindi, I can’t write the dialogues in Hindi. Though I can surely tell when and where it is going wrong,” he says and goes on to add, “I am perhaps most comfortable in Tamil. If there is anything to change on location in Tamil, I can do so without batting an eyelid.” Recently, Hosanna, a song from the film has drawn a lot of flak from the Christian community, though the same song was there in the Tamil and Telugu versions as well. Talking about it, Gautham says, “I really don’t know why people are making an issue out of it when there is nothing vulgar about it. The guy falls in love with a girl and treats love as God, what is the problem in it?” Gautham has, working with Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, in his wishlist and one of them might just come true soon. For the buzz in town is that the director is in fact keen to work with Shah Rukh in the Hindi remake of his Tamil film Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu where Shah Rukh will get to play a cop for the first time. Gautham is one director who believes that the responsibility of an entire film rests on the director’s shoulders. “It’s a director’s job to get the right actors on board and to make sure that the film translates well onto the screen. We can’t come with excuses like, the producer didn’t give us enough money and so on. That is the same advice that I give to any new director entering the industry. Get to know your distributors and be competent,” signs off Gautham.

elebrity siblings Nigaar and Gauhar Khan have teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India for an ad campaign against caged animals in zoos.
The sisters, appear wearing zebrastriped bodysuits while caged in a zebra-striped box in the campaign, which reads ‘Think Outside the Box: Boycott Cages, Boycott Zoos’. “You don’t learn anything from looking at a sad animal locked up in a zoo. If you want to learn about animals, view them in their natural habitats — visit a nature preserve, or watch a video or read a magazine about them. Don’t support the keeping of animals in unnatural confinement,” said Gauhar.
"If u don't go aftr wut u want,u ll never hv it,if u don't ask, th answer s always no,if u don't step forward u r always in th same place" Her elder sister Nigaar too, feels animals shouldn’t be caged. “Like people, animals need freedom. Instead of spending money on breeding animals or capturing them in the wild, we should be spending money on protecting the animals’ natural habitats or on creating reserves and national parks where they can live in peace,” said Nigaar. The ad for the animal rights organisation will be featured in an upcoming episode of The Khan Sisters on UTV Bindaas. IANS

outhern actor Dhanush, who became an overnight success across the nation thanks to the song Kolaveri di, has signed his first Bollywood project Raanjhnaa. The movie will be directed by Aanand L Rai of Tanu Weds Manu fame. He says he chose Dhanush for his simplicity. “For the past six months, I’ve been looking for a simple boy to play the lead in Raanjhnaa. My requirement was a man who could look vulnerable on screen. When I saw Dhanush in the Tamil
film Aadukalam, I liked him immediately. He looks very ordinary and honest, and that was the demand of the character,” Rai said in a press statement. If the grapevine is to be believed, the director had approached him for the movie before the success of Kolaveri di. Dhanush, who is iconic hero Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, is not too well versed with Hindi. But it won’t be a barrier for his Bollywood career as he is keen to explore the industry and learn the local language and culture. IANS

Ben Stiller’s All Talk He’s signed on for an HBO pilot
I
t’s clearly the day that HBO has decided would work for announcing new comedy pilots. Hot on the heels of news about Paul Feig directing Goldie Hawn in The Viagra Diaries comes word that Ben Stiller has jumped aboard to star, direct and executively produce All Talk. Novelist Jonathan Safran Foer cooked up the concept and has written the script for the pilot, which will follow the daily dramas of a Jewish family in Washington, DC. To add that little bit of extra class, Stiller’s Tower Heist costar Alan Alda (already a telly legend thanks to the likes of M*A*S*H, ER and The West Wing) is in talks to co-star. And working behind the scenes will be Social
Network producer/regular Stiller collaborator Scott Rudin. According to a website, the pilot is currently pencilling in a late 2012 shoot, which presumably will allow Stiller to work on new film projects such as The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty and Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young. He also just finished shooting action comedy Neighbourhood Watch, a moment that Jonah Hill marked on Twitter with a new pic of the main cast.

The actress, 39, breezed past photographers on the red carpet, pausing only once to pose with Marin Gerrier — the young actor who plays her son in the movie — and the film’s director, JeanMarc Vallée. “She had the air she always does — polite, smiling saying hello to everyone inside,” said a reporter. But reporters were explicitly told that no personal questions were allowed. She sported a black tuxedo jacket, a flowing black tie, rust-coloured leather pants and four-inch heels for the event. Paradis seemed happy to be in Paris and was accompanied by her sister Alysson at the premiere, 5,000 miles away from Depp, who was last spotted in Los Angeles on Thursday. Last week, she was photographed shopping in the French city. Paradis left the premiere early and briefly signed autographs for fans outside the UGC Danton theatre, before heading to the after-party at the nearby Chez Castel nightclub.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

A semi supernova Russia’s Maria Sharapova set up a semi-final of the Australian Open against Petra Kvitova after she beat fellow countrywoman Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets on Wednesday
T
he former champion easily handled 56th-ranked Makarova’s left-handed serves and overpowered her in the baseline rallies to win 6-2, 63.The semi-final will be a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final, which Kvitova won 6-3, 6-4 to claim her first grand slam title. “I lost to her the last couple of times I played her,” Sharapova said of Kvitova. “She’s the one to beat, she’s full of confidence and she’s playing the best on tour.” It is the first time Sharapova has reached the final four in Melbourne since she won the title in 2008, the latest of her three major trophies after Wimbledon 2004 and the US Open 2006. Sharapova started brilliantly against Makarova and had her
under pressure from the very beginning, holding her own serve with ease and pressuring her opponent’s. Makarova couldn’t handle the pressure and cracked in the fourth game then again in the eighth to hand Sharapova the first set in 43 minutes. She had a glimmer of hope when she broke Sharapova early in the second set, only to give it straight back with a poor service game. Sharapova needed no second invitation and raced away to a 5-2 lead. She had her first match point on Makarova’s serve, and then two more on her own before clinching the quarter-final on her fourth opportunity when a Makarova forehand sailed long over the baseline.

MELBOURNE: Roger Federer can avenge one of his most painful defeats in the Australian Open semi-finals Thursday in a rematch with Rafael Nadal, which has extra spice after a rare slight from his great rival. The last time they met in Melbourne, Federer was left a weeping wreck when Nadal remorselessly ground him down in 2009’s nail-biting five-set final to claim his first hardcourt grand
slam title. It was just months after Nadal had won their epic 2008 Wimbledon title match, with Federer left hanging on 13 grand slam wins — one behind Pete Sampras’s record. Three years later, and with 16 major trophies in the bag, Federer admitted he was itching for another crack at Nadal, who aimed an unaccustomed barb at his longtime sparring partner on the eve of
the tournament. “Obviously I’d like to play Rafa because of our great epic match earlier in the finals here a few years ago. I’d like to get a chance to play him again here,” said Federer. Federer trails Nadal 17-9 in head-to-head clashes and 7-2 in grand slams, and has not beaten him in a major since the Wimbledon final of 2007. But he remains undaunted as he chases his first slam in two years.
The four-time champion admitted it was strange to meet Nadal in their first grand slam semi-final since the 2005 French Open -- their debut major meeting -- now he has dropped to number three in the rankings and seedings. “I guess it’s a nice change-up,” he said. “OK, it doesn’t allow a rematch for the Australian Open final here, you know... but I think it’s good for tennis that it changes up a bit.”
Nadal, who at 25 is five years younger than Federer, said a match with the Swiss is always “special” regardless of their ranking. “The ranking is important, but when we talk about a player who won 16 grand slams and I won 10 and we played a lot of matches between each other, and all in very important moments for our careers and very high moments,” he said.

Ozzies pile on the agony
Twelfth Man Babu Kalyanpur
n Australia piled on the agony relentlessly on the second day. They dominated with aggression and nearly 60 runs were scored in the first hour itself. n Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke extended their partnership to 386, the fourth highest in Australian cricket. Both scored double hundreds with wonderful strokeplay. n India’s bowling was indifferent as it had been throughout the series. The short stuff and half-volleys were abundantly spread in-between a few good balls. They were not helped by some poor captaincy from Virendra Sehwag whose bowling changes and field placements did not help. n There was only one bright spot after lunch when India picked up three quick wickets. But that was negated by Brad Haddin and Ryan Harris who put on an unbeaten 71-run partnership. n Australia’s score of 604 for seven is imposing. India must remember that the Adelaide wicket does not hold any demons and if they concentrate, the runs will come.
Redemption man H ow did I know I'd come here and get asked questions about retirement?" Ponting, 37, asked while laughing away speculations about his retirement. "I won't be retiring at the end of this Test match." Ponting answered jovially when asked about his emotional fist pump and gestures to every section of the Adelaide Oval. ''It was a celebration. I'd just made a Test match hundred so I was pretty excited about that.” Ponting joined Indians Sachin Tendulkar (15,432) and Rahul Dravid (13,262), in the exclusive 13,000-run club, but the gritty Tasmanian shrugged off the achievement. "It's never been about making 13,000 runs or 14,000 runs," he said. "It's about doing what I can when it's required of me to get my team through a certain situation in
It's about doing what I can when it's required of me to get my team through a certain situation in a game. Ricky Ponting
a game. That's what motivates me. "Winning Test matches and winning games of cricket for Australia is what motivate me to keep playing. I felt I played better today than I did in Sydney, it was probably a better wicket to bat on today, there wasn't much in it for any of the Indian bowlers," he said. "I'm not going to be satisfied with where I am at. You go through too many ups and downs in your career to let moments like this slip."
Mike Hussey congratulates Ricky Ponting after the latter scored a double century in the Adelaide Test.

DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR INDIA ADELAIDE: Skipper Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting hit double-centuries as Australia built an imposing first innings total in the fourth Test against India on Wednesday. Clarke scored 210 and Ponting 221 as Australia posted 604 for seven keeping the beleaguered Indians in the field for more 10 hours in sweltering conditions at Adelaide Oval. Their 386-run stand easily bettered their own fourth wicket partnership record of 288 set in the second Sydney Test of the series. It also eclipsed the highest
38,525
