The bitter north and south divide is another problem. The north Indian professors do not want a VC from AP and are provoking the students. This apart, the former VC, created posts and appointed professors for courses that have no takers. The university is also facing a Central Vigilance Commission inquiry.

No VC since 1.5 years An institution without a head is surely going to land in trouble. Such is the case with the university which has been functioning without a permanent VC for the last year and a half. Politicking within the management and faculty has aggravated the situation.

“We have so many problems in this college but there is no one to take the complaint.

Communication is lacking. We do have an acting VC, but it is as good as not having one,” says Hima Bindu, a mass communication student. The situation has turned so bad that the central government is unable to find a suitable person who could set the house in order. In fact, the three search committees formed by the government have proposed names of a few professors for the position. But they couldn’t find anyone who fit the bill.

Internal politics This campus is marred by internal politics. The university has several pressure groups

Open sex and drug abuse This is an open secret in this university. Hostel rooms are the safest haven for sex.

And, there is no one to keep a tab. “The condition of our hostels is very bad. We have cramped rooms. Too much liberty leads to unprotected and pre-marital sex,” says the warden of the university.

For instance, a few months ago, a sewerage pipeline in the hostel was found overflowing and the cleaners found a foetus blocking the pipe.

nglish Foreign Languages University (EFLU) — earlier known as the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) — is a deemed university sans basic amenities. Ever since its formation in 1974, it has been embroiled in a slew of controversies with no respite.

This university, whose claim to fame is international standards in teaching foreign languages, doesn’t have basic facilities like toilets and playgrounds. In fact, some of the buildings were constructed without permission from the authorities.

The University is so cramped that professors were forced to conduct classes in turns to cover the syllabus that they missed during the Telangana agitation.

The situation is so bad that is the GHMC was ever to crack the whip, the EFLU may lose some of its buildings. Issues like free sex and drug peddling are no longer a secret on the campus. Internal politics and bickering between students and teachers is only adding to the chaos that is EFLU. Listed below are a few of the issues.

Poor hostel facilities Though the 2,000-strong student population has hostels to stay in, they are badly maintained. “Most students cook food on electric stoves and therefore the chances of short circuit are high. Apart from this, the hostels have no proper ventilation, offer bad food, and have no drinking water.

The students are forced to buy drinking water.

“I came all the way from Afghanistan to study English and here we face discrimination. International students are not allowed to bring in guests to hostels. Forget about guests, they are not even allowing my own classmates in. We were promised several services and now there are none.

Strangely enough, we don’t

even have anybody to complain to,” says Sruasoulic Mohmed, a student of MA (English) from Afghanistan.

Violence and threats issued to professors A week ago, four students manhandled a professor on the campus and a complaint to the in-charge VC evoked a muted response. A student lodged a case under the SC, ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act with OU police station against a professor. However, the talk is that the student, who failed in the examination, cooked this up as revenge on the professor.

Not only Indian students but foreign students are also subject to discrimination, said a foreign national.

Pune-Secunderabad Shatabdi Express introduced HYDERABAD: A new superfast train, Shatabdi Express, was introduced between Secunderabad and Pune, every day of the week except Tuesday. The 12025 Shatabdi Express will leave Pune at 5.50am and arrive at Secunderabad at 4.10pm the same day.

ay it never happen to you, but if by ill-luck you fall prey to a road accident, die and you happen to have no identity on you, hawks that trade in dead bodies would make good money by selling your organs.

Going by the current rate, a set of fairly healthy teeth could fetch a whopping Rs 10,000, a meter of

veins/arteries can generate Rs 35,000 and a skull can mint Rs 25,000. If you are identified and happen to have pledged your organs to medical institutions, nobody will touch your corpse.

This trading in human misery takes place in mortuaries where decomposing bodies are kept in cold storage for six months or more. Scores of unidentified bodies, soruces tell Postnoon, have been sold to medical institutions outside the State for Rs 3 lakh.

The going rate

If you want to buy a body of a female aged between 17 to 24 years you might have to shell out anything between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh (since they are rare).

Usually the price is fixed depending on the nature of death.

For instance, for a body of a person who was killed naturally the price is higher when compared to the body of somebody killed in an accident.

In a shocking revelation, the missing and unidentified corpses at Osmania General Hospital and Gandhi Hospital, were reportedly sold illegally. The demand for ‘fresh’ bodies, is increasing each year and the number of unidentified dead bodies found in the Hyderabad and Cyberabad limits too is increasing at an alarming rate, while there is a sharp decrease in the bodies that are being identified. Last year about 1024 dead unidentified dead bodies had come to the Osmania mortuary. Of them 400 bodies were sold legally for Rs 60 lakh and as many as 491 bodies were disposed through Satya Harishchandra Foundation, the only agency recognised by the government to cremate the unclaimed dead bodies.

However, there seems to be no account of the remaining corpses.

The foundation is grappling with the lack of burial facilities since the locals and encroachers are opposing to any burial facility near them.

According to the organisation nearly 250 corpses were piled up in both the mortuaries since they’ve halted the cremation process.

T

hey are a confused lot. The dwindling of YSR Congress consisting of 27 MLAs to 20 now is the least worry of the party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The question in his mind, say sources close to him, is how many will be there when the Winter session begins on December 1 and what will they do if the Congress issues a whip to vote against the proposed noconfidence motion by the TDP. Konda Surekha, a staunch supporter of Jaganmohan Reddy, gave an indication of the camp’s confused status. She said after the party meeting yesterday that the “inevitable” was going to happen soon. But she did not elaborate what that “inevitable” was but insisted that all MLAs would support a no-confidence motion if the TDP moved it.

When asked about MLAs rejoining the Congress, she said anything was possible in politics.

“Our MLAs may go back to the Congress and their MLAs may join us anytime. This is politics,” she said. But she did not comment on if Jagan himself would rejoin the Congress.

Earlier, some MLAs said that the development of the constituencies was their priority and for that they had to support the Kiran government.

Taking this into account, Jagan thought it fit to call for a

meeting and found out that eight of the MLAs who were supporting him earlier did not turn up for the meeting and it had to be seen as to what would they do if the no-confidence motion came up against Kiran in the Assembly. Will the MLAs stick to Jagan’s decision or will they indirectly support Kiran in the name of the development programmes?

HYDERABAD: A crisis of sorts has developed at the GHMC after the Congress leader and mayor Banda Karthika Reddy has not yet shown inclinations of quitting to pave the way for the MIM as per agreement on sharing mayoralty.

The ruling partners — the Congress and the MIM — had agreed upon to share the prime slot on equal terms, two years each. The Congress term ends by this month-end and the MIM is to assume the mayoral office on December 3. As the mayor has not resigned yet and the procedural formalities require more than a month, it is now clear that a new mayor will not be in office by the date as per the agreement. Moreover, it is being viewed as the violation of constitution for a local body like GHMC. On the other hand, many MIM corporators seem to be angry with the mayor. “We thought she would resign at least one month before she completes her tenure. But it did not happen. If our party candidate was in mayor’s position, he would have resigned,” said former mayor of MCH and MIM corporator Mir Zulfeqar Ali.

Speaking to Postnoon, party president Asaduddin Owaisi, said that there is nothing much to it and added that he is hoping that Congress party pave the way for change of guard before its term completes. Owaisi said it was not a serious issue.

On the other hand Congress MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy said that the party would not allow Jagan to return to the Congress fold. But he predicted that the Congress MLAs who joined the YSR Congress party could return to their parent party anytime.

HYDERABAD: Transport minister Botsa Sathyanarayana has launched ‘Pre-Paid Auto Service’ at the Secunderabad Railway Station here on Thursday.

The new prepaid auto service would help the commuters to travel conveniently, without paying exorbitant charges for autos, through computer billing system.

On this occasion, the minister praised the ACP (Traffic) CV Anand for introducing the new service, which would prevent the auto drivers to collect charges as they wished from the commuters.

He said that the new system will record the details of commuters and the auto, and the goods forgotten by the commuters will be given back easily.

Parliament: Third day lost, Rs2.5 crore too NEW DELHI: Pandemonium over varied issues by ruling party and Opposition members in both houses of Parliament on Thursday resulted in the loss of the third day of the Winter Session and another Rs2.5 crore going down the drain. Kishenji: Media-savvy, cold-blooded rebel leader KOLKATA: Tall and slim, the AK-47 assault rifle wielding Mallojula Koteshwar Rao alias Kishanji was the field general and media savvy leader of the banned Maoists. He invoked fear as well as curiosity through his television interviews with his face covered with a cloth and his audio taped messages.

A senior member of the politburo or top policy making body of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist that is engaged in a guerrilla warfare to capture power in India, the 1956 born Kishanji has been the incharge of the outfit’s military operation since its foundation in 2004 — through merger of the People’s War Group and the Maoist Communist Centre.

A close aide of elusive Maoist chief Muppalla Lakshmana Rao alias Ganapathy, Kishanji was adept in use of firearms and known for his fast movements and sharp intelligence that helped him escape the dragnet of security forces on several occasions over the past three years.

Kishanji, was killed on Thursday by security forces in West Bengal, officials said.

Meghalaya rebel chief nabbed SHILLONG: In a major setback to the Garo National Liberation Army, its top leader Champion R Sangma has been detained in Bangladesh and is likely to be handed over to India soon, a police official on Thursday.

Champion, who claims to be fighting for a separate Garoland, has been camping in Bangladesh for several months in search of support.

“We have confirmed from the central intelligence agencies that Champion has been arrested from Mymensingh district (Bangladesh) by Royal Action Bangladesh (RAB) commandos,” a top Meghalaya police official, said. He said the rebel leader will be handed over to India soon.

However, a Union home ministry official said that New Delhi does not have any official confirmation of Champion’s detention.

He had a normal childhood and studied in a government college, but came close to Naxalite (Maoist) leader Kondapalli Seetharamaiah. Koteshwar Rao was christened Kishanji, and soon became one of the two trusted lieutenants of Seetaramaiah. Ganapathy was the other. He played a leading role in forming the People’s War Group, in 1980, and in 1994 was given charge of military operations in West Bengal.

Kishanji settled alongside a couple of close associates in the industrial town of Naihati close to the metropolis and began organising and indoctrinating the workers besides trying to rope in youths from the backward Purulia and Bankura districts.

After the PW merged with

the MCC in 2004 to form the CPI-Maoist, Kishanji became a founding member of the party’s politburo, and was given the responsibility of the eastern command. He was in charge of a slew of eastern states including West Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Jharkhand.

Known for his shrewdness, and firm commitment to the rebel’s violent cause, Kishanji has been described by security agencies as cruel who did not bat an eyelid in killing those whom he called “class enemies” or “enemies of the revolution”.

At the same time, a number of PW and CPI-Maoist leaders had to go into obscurity after they fell out with Kishanji.

After the Maoist presence in Lalgarh under Binpur-1 block of West Midnapore district came into the open months after the landmine blast on West Bengal’s then chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s convoy in November 2008, Kishanji

became its chief spokesman. He struck a good rapport with the Bengal media, and called up journalists of various outlets whenever he wanted to present the Maoists’ views on any issue.

He also took calls often, and claimed responsibility for the various killings and ambushes indulged in by the ultras including the attack on the Silda Eastern Frontier Rifles camp and the abduction of a police officer.

But the media interactions reduced after he was seriously injured during a shootout with the security forces in Lakshamanpur in West Midnapore district in March, 2009.

It was initially rumoured that Kishanji had died, but he emerged after months with a media interview.

Kishanji also liaisoned with ultra outfits like United Liberation Front of Assam, and those in other north eastern states as also in Myanmar.

Alert sounded in AP, Odisha after Kishenji’s killing HYDERABAD: An alert has been sounded on the AndhraOrissa border (AOB) and in some Telangana districts of Andhra Pradesh in the wake of the killing of top Maoist leader Kishenji in an encounter.

“We have asked district superintendents of police to be on alert as Kishenji hailed from Andhra Pradesh,” a senior police

officer said. Fifty-Eight-year-old Molajula Koteswar Rao, better known as Kishenji, hailed from Pedapally in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh.

Security forces were put on high alert in Odisha for possible Maoist activities after one of the top guerrillas, Kishanji, was killed in neighbouring West Bengal a day ago, police said on Friday.

“The rebels may try to get across the border for a safe haven,” a police official said.

“We have asked police and security forces, especially in the district of Mayurbhanj, to remain watchful,” he added.

Mayurbhanj is close to the West Bengal border. Maoists are active in over half of Odisha’s 30 districts.

Bail pleas of Kanimozhi, 5 others to be heard today NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday allowed the early hearing of the bail pleas of DMK MP Kanimozhi and five others accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case.

Justice VK Shali said the matter would be heard Friday morning.

Directing the CBI that is probing the case and defence counsel, Justice Shali asked them to submit a statement on the charges levelled against all the six accused and the evidence so far against them.

Kanimozhi and the five other accused moved the court Wednesday for early hearing of their bail applications after the Supreme Court granted bail to five corporate executives co-accused in the case — Sanjay Chandra of Unitech Wireless, Vinod Goenka of Swan Telecom and Reliance Group’s Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair. With the five getting bail, nine accused now remain behind bars.

Child killed in rape bid on mom BHUBANESWAR: A group of miscreants crushed a child to death in a bid to rape his mother in Odisha, police said Thursday.

The brutal crime was committed Wednesday night by at least three people at Ghasian village in Bolangir district, nearly 400 km from here.

The incident came to light when the child was found dead and residents and the victim Thursday demanded police action against the offenders.

According to inspector Sanatan Mohananda, the miscreants were in an inebriated condition forcibly entered into the hut when the 45year-old victim was sleeping with her five minor children and husband.

Her youngest son who was oneand-a-half-years-old was sleeping close to her. The miscreants beat up her husband when he protested the attempted rape of his wife, Mohananda told IANS. The family jointly prevented the rape but during the scuffle the baby suffered injuries and died, the official said.

Police said the woman and her family belonged to the neighbouring Chhattisgarh and migrate often in search of livelihood.

Industry hails FDI in multi-brand retail NEW DELHI: India Inc on Thursday welcomed the cabinet’s decision to allow 51 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail and said it would help bring down inflation, reduce wastage and improve farmer productivity.

The cabinet, at a meeting Thursday evening chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also allowed 100-percent equity in single brand retailing.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said opening up the retail sector would usher in substantial investments into back-end infrastructure, which will help cut down wastage of farm produce and offer more choices to consumers.

“This would open up enormous opportunities in India for expansion of organised retail

and allow substantial investment in back end infrastructure like cold chains, warehousing, logistics and expansion of contract farming,” said CII president, B. Muthuraman.

The move will benefit the consumers, farmers and small and medium enterprises, while generating significant employment, added Muthuraman.

“India with a 8-9 percent growth in gross domestic prod-

uct is a consumer driven economy and modern retail has to step up to be able to meet up consumer aspiration,” said the CII president.

Although the government has not given out details yet, sources said some caveats have been proposed in the policy, notably to protect the interests of mom-and-pop shops, farmers and small and medium enterprises. There are some 40

million people involved directly in running these neighbourhood stores.

“This policy initiative is expected to bring more investments not just in the front-end but also in the back-end infrastructure, which would result in reduced wastage and would also help in addressing the issue of inflation over a period of time,” said FICCI president, Harsh Mariwala.

However, this is just the first step. Seeds have been sown but the fruits will be seen only if other policy initiatives are implemented immediately like adoption of model agriculture produce marketing committee act by all the states, and timely implementation of goods and services tax,” added Mariwala.

Sensex down MUMBAI: The BSE benchmark Sensex fell by over 151 points in opening trade on Friday as participants booked gains recorded in the previous session amid a weakening trend on other Asian bourses.

The 30-share Sensex, which closed 158.52 points higher in the previous session, fell by 151.47 points, or 0.95 per cent, to 15,707.02 in opening trade on Friday.

In a similar fashion, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty Index shed 46.75 points, or 0.98 per cent, to 4,709.70.

Bucking the trend, stocks of retail firms were in good demand after the government cleared 51 per cent foreign direct investment in the multi-brand retail sector on Thursday.

Rupee loses 15 paise against US dollar in early trade The Indian rupee lost 15 paise to Rs 52.21 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on Friday amid appreciation of the American currency against the euro and other rivals overseas and a weak opening in the domestic equity market.

Increased demand for the American currency from banks and importers also put pressure on the rupee. Dealers attributed the rupee’s fall to dollar gains against the euro on account of the debt crisis engulfing the common currency region.

adal’s thrashing at the hands of Roger Federer on Tuesday had put him into a straight shoot-out with Tsonga for the second semi-final place and, although he levelled the match in the second set, there was no denying the Frenchman in the decider.

Nadal had taken a month off prior to the tournament with next weekend’s Davis Cup final against Argentina in mind, and he certainly lacked his usual sharpness but Tsonga played a superb match to reach the semi-finals for the first time.

Tsonga beat Nadal most recently at Queen’s this summer, one of only two wins he had managed in eight meetings prior to their London clash, and it was all the world number two could do to keep pace in the early stages here.

His opponent could not force the break, though, and into a tie-break they went.

This time Nadal was helpless as Tsonga used a winning combination of power from the baseline and finesse at the

net to reel off five points in a row, clinching it with an ace.

It was a hugely impressive set from the world number six, and perhaps it was not surprising to see the quality dip slightly in the second set, from

both players. There had not been a sniff of a break point until Tsonga served to stay in the set, when the Frenchman chose the worst time to throw in a series of loose shots. His serve dug him out of trouble

three times but not a fourth as Nadal levelled things up.

The Spaniard has made a career of fighting through matches he might well have lost, but it was not to be that way against Tsonga. In the third game of the decider Nadal was made to regret an untimely double-fault as the Frenchman forced three break points, taking the second when his opponent failed to pick up a volley.

It was the French Open champion’s forehand, so often a match-winner, that had been his biggest weakness here, and it proved so again in the seventh game as he netted a regulation one on break point to leave the Frenchman serving for the match.

There was a brief twist still to come as three doublefaults betrayed Tsonga’s nerves and allowed Nadal to retrieve one break, but another poor service game from the Spaniard handed it straight back, the sixth seed sealing victory with a searing forehand winner after two hours ES and 42 minutes.

Pearce said, “The players will know very shortly. We’re in the process of putting a long list out which can be added to in due course but at the moment it’s quite a substantial list and those players will be acutely aware that they are on the list for the GB team.

“They will have to sign a form putting forward their participation within that and putting themselves forward

for selection so the players will know themselves and the clubs will be aware very shortly of who is on that list of players.” Pearce confirmed Beckham is part of that long list.

There has been controversy surrounding a British team, with opposition coming from the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish Football Associations, who fear the dilution of their independent status within FIFA if they join forces with their English counterparts.

The involvement of England Under-21 players at the senior Euro 2012 tournament could also affect selec-

tion for the Olympic Games, with several players including Jack Wilshere, Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Kyle Walker likely to feature for the senior side.

“Obviously if players are going to the European Championship with the senior team then we would have to take a considered view nearer the time in respect to a week or two weeks later they contribute to the GB team,” Pearce said.

“We’ll approach that nearer the time and see how form and fitness is for the players who are on the long list that we are about to put out.”

Diabetes drug shows promise in reducing risk of cancer

A

n inexpensive drug that treats Type-2 diabetes has been shown to prevent a number of natural and man-made chemicals from stimulating the growth of breast cancer cells, according to a newly published study by a Michigan State University researcher.

The research, led by paediatrics professor James Trosko and colleagues from South Korea’s Seoul National University, provides biological evidence for previously reported epidemiological surveys that long-term use of the drug metformin for Type-2 diabetes reduces the risk of diabetes-associated cancers, such as breast cancers. The research appears in the cur-

rent edition of PLoS One. “People with Type-2 diabetes are known to be at high risk for several diabetes-associated cancers, such as breast, liver and pancreatic cancers,” said Trosko, a professor in the College of Human Medicine’s Department of Paediatrics and Human Development. “While metformin has been shown in population studies to reduce the risk of these cancers, there was no evidence of how it worked.”

For the study, Trosko and colleagues focused on the concept that cancers originate from adult human stem cells and that there are many natural and man-made chemicals that enhance the growth of breast cancer cells.

Metformin prevents tumours from growing in human cultures Using culture dishes, they grew miniature human breast tumours, or mammospheres, that activated a certain stem cell gene (Oct4A). Then the mammospheres were exposed to natural estrogens — known growth factor and potential breast tumour promoter — and man-made chemicals that are known to promote tumours or disrupt the endocrine system.

The team found that estrogens and the chemicals caused

the mammospheres to increase in numbers and size.

However, with metformin added, the numbers and size of the mammospheres were dramatically reduced. While each of the chemicals enhanced growth by different means, metformin seemed to be able to inhibit their stimulated growth in all cases.

“While future studies are needed to understand the exact mechanism by which

metformin works to reduce the growth of breast cancers, this study reveals the need to determine if the drug might be used as a preventive drug and for individuals who have no indication of any existing cancers,” he said.

“Though we still do not know the exact molecular mechanism by which it works, metformin seems to dramatically affect how estrogens and endocrine-disrupting chemicals cause the pre-existing breast cancers to grow.”

In addition, further research needs to be done with human cultures to see if metformin can reduce the risk of pancreatic and liver cancers in Type-2 diabetics as well, he said.

Further combining a CT scan with a quick heart test might result in a solid determination of cause of death in up to half of cases referred for autopsy, says study co-author Ian Roberts, a pathologist at the University of Oxford.

Autopsies are invasive and sometimes inconclusive, and some people object to the procedure on cultural or religions grounds. The new data suggest that imaging may provide an alternative in some cases, adding to post-mortem accuracy and easing the burden of grieving survivors, says Roberts.

Whether imaging would save money is unknown, he says.

At their essence, autopsies have changed little in the past century but remain the gold standard post-mortem exam. In recent years, some coroners and medical examiners have considered the use of medical imaging with MRI or CT scans, but few

labs or hospitals have adopted the technologies because little research data existed to document their utility in this setting.

For the new study, Roberts and his colleagues examined 182 deceased people whose cause of death wasn’t known. All underwent a CT scan and MRI. Radiologists analysed those

results separately and combined, arriving at a cause of death from each set of images.

The radiologists also ranked how much confidence they had in each cause-of-death conclusion — definite, probable, possible or uncertain. Pathologists then performed autopsies on all of the bodies. Radiologists’ cause-of-death determinations based on CT scans agreed with the more definitive autopsy findings 68 per cent of the time.

Conclusions based on MRI were accurate 57 per cent of the time.

In cases where the radiologists ranked the cause of death from a CT scan as “definite,” the diagnosis agreed with the autopsy 84 per cent of the time.

But such “definite” determinations accounted for only onethird of all CT scan results. The researchers scanned 10 cadavers and analysed the results as training before their research.

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter; add the onions and celery. Saute for about 5 minutes or until the onions soften.

Add the garlic and cook for one minute more. Add the sage, salt, pepper and stock; bring to a simmer.

Add bread cubes to a large mixing bowl and pour over the hot broth mixture. Add the fresh herbs and mix well. If the bread seems too dry, more stock can be added. Taste for salt and add accordingly. Transfer to a buttered making dish. Bake at 175 degrees for about 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 220° C. Rinse the turkey inside and out and pat it dry with paper towels. Place the wings underneath the body. If desired, tie the drumsticks together using kitchen string. Place the carrots, celery, and onions in a metal roasting pan. Transfer the turkey to a wire rack and place it on top of the vegetables. Drizzle the skin with the butter or oil and, using your fingers, spread it evenly. Season with the salt and pepper. n Roast the turkey, uncovered, until browned, 30 to 45 minutes. n Add 1 cup cold water to pan. Cover the turkey loosely with foil. Reduce oven temperature to 170° C. Roast until a thermometer inserted in a thigh registers 85° C, about 2 hours total. Let the turkey rest for at least 30 minutes before carving. Garnish with the orange wedges and parsley. Reserve the juices in the roasting pan for Gravy.

Tell us some interesting facts about yourself I am a kabaddi player turned model and very few people know this. I like to write poetry too sometimes when I am in the mood. I have the ability to laugh at myself and make people laugh too in the process. I don't have a mean bone in me and I pretty much like everyone.

I am also part of a theatre group Adi Shakti. Life has so much to offer that I get too busy with it.

How many years have you walked the earth?

It has been 28 wonderful years.

It has been almost six years now and it was an ad for Rexona deodorant.

What will you not leave home without?

It all depends on my mood but waist coats are something I love and most of the times I step out in them.

Casual jackets, a suit or two though I am not a suit guy. A Pathani suit, which is essential for Punjabis and I am most comfortable in it. Also a good pair of shoes.

CANDID THREE What inspired you to become a model?

Back when I was a kabaddi player, I was watching TV one day and saw a local contest being announced. Seeing some of the contestants and models I thought to myself that if these guys can do it then why not me? Following which, I lost 30 kilograms and went to Mumbai. I was sure of what I wanted but was unsure how to go about it. I just wanted to become a model, somewhere down the line I think I was lucky, I was always positive and never felt it was hard for me since I took everything in my stride.

Model Inder Bajwa comes from a small village in Punjab and belongs to a farmer's family. But his good looks, sheer grit and determination have got him to where he is today

Who is your favourite model and why?

Sheetal Mallar for the simple reason that she is stunning, gorgeous, has great a skin tone and height. All in all a complete package!

You can see me in Raymonds campaigns. I have hardly explored anything else as I am under a contract with them.

What’s your sexiest asset?

Personally I don't see anything sexy about me but maybe my willpower. People have told me that they find my lips quite sexy.

Challenges faced in the modelling industry...

My biggest challenge was not knowing English. I couldn't register If not modelling then what would you have been doing? that being in India a model had to I would have continued being a kabaddi player or a farmer. talk, looks were not enough and I found it really hard to understand.

hat he would become a teacher or an educationist was a given.

Mohammed Abdul Qawi Bahelmi hails from a family of teachers. He says, “My grandfather, my father and my uncle were all teachers and although my ambition was to be a CA, I seem to have taken naturally to this profession.” He continues, “Looks like I have influenced my kids too, my eldest son Abdul Aziz Bahelmi now manages the Tolichowki branch of Vidya Niketan Academy, and my youngest son Junaid Bahelmi manages the main residential branch at Kammareddy.”

He had a very active student life. “In 1969, I was a student and also an activist for the cause of Telangana. I loved my student life, but my father passed away and the responsibility of the school fell on me, so I could not continue my studies,” he recalls. He continues, “I can call myself a practically educated teacher. I started as a tuition master and now I own schools. By the grace of God my students are doing well for themselves, and are spread all across the world.”

What makes him so popular? Qawi smiles and replies, “None of my students have ever seen me angry. My understanding of education is not just based on the curriculum, but on developing and enhancing my students mindset. It’s to enable their survival in the big world after they step out of my school.” He then adds in a matter-of-fact tone , “I am not doing any social service. This is a profession and I am paid for my services. I only believe in being an honest and sincere teacher.” His students are sure to disagree with him there, since he is known to have brightened a lot of lives.

What has been Qawi Bahelmi’s inspiration, and pat comes the reply, “Prophet Mohammed and his life has been very inspiring. I try to emulate his lifestyle as closely as possible. Righteousness, being truthful, sincere and daily habits like how to be well behaved etc. I have tried to propagate all these values in my institutions and I believe that is one of the main reasons why my institutions have shaped the way they have.”

He quickly adds, “This does not mean that I am enforcing Islam on anyone, but that is my guide.”

For a man who is always shuttling between his residential and day schools, when does he get time for his family? He says, “I am always in my residential school and my wife also teaches with me.

Now my kids do it too. Our family time is working together.” He adds, “My wife has been very cooperative and has always helped me with the growth of my children (students). When my students are unwell or are missing their homes, she is the one who takes care of them. She has sacrificed a lot for me and has been very understanding right from the beginning.”

But its not like all work and no time to relax for Qawi. One can often find him playing a game of Table Tennis or Volleyball with his students. It’s inspiring to see his energy at the age of 70.

Enhancing students’ mindset At 70, Mohammed Abdul Qawi Bahelmi, a teacher, is still dedicated to making other’s lives brighter. He started his own school in 1973 and today his children have taken over.

Does she dislike any habit of his? To which she says with a laugh, “We have been married for too long to dislike anything in each other, but yes, I would definitely want to change his appetite. He eats too less. I also don’t like him travelling so much and I think it’s time, he retires but I don’t think he will ever listen to me.”Their eldest son Abdul Aziz Bahelmi has taken after his father and looks to his dad for inspiration. He says “Dad always says, ‘When a barber makes a mistake it’s a new haircut, when a tailor makes a mistake it’s new fashion, when a politician makes a mistake it’s a new law, but when a teacher makes a mistake it’s a mistake.’ He always taught us on how much responsibility comes with our jobs.”

am 999 which talks about a dam disaster also deals with navarasas or the nine human emotions. Megha Burman, the Bengali beauty, represents the emotion of love in it. Talking about the film and her role in it, Megha says, “Generally the rasas are of 9 types and are collectively called navarasas. The film is set in the backdrop of a dam.

I portray the role of a Muslim girl named Raziya and she is the symbol of love in the

film.”

For Megha, the offer for the role in Dam 999 was too good to be true.” Someone from the direction team spotted me in a television commercial and then called and explained to me about the project. I couldn’t believe it, I went to the website and read all that there was to the film. I was then flown to the location in Alleppey-Cochin and went through a gruelling look-test and had to perform some scenes in front of the team. I was told they would get back to me after they auditioned the other girls. Few days later

I was informed that I was meant to fly to Ooty and start filming the first schedule of Dam 999 and the rest as they say is history,” offers Megha who is pretty excited to be part of a film which has entered the Oscar library.

The film was shot at various locations and Megha had a wonderful experience especially when they were shooting aboard the ship Front Sabang. “I looked forward to the commuting via a boat to the ship everyday. We shot there for 7 days and each day we would have to queue-up, fill out forms and submit our passports, take our sea-pass and drive to the off-shore location. We used to wait for the boat and travel for 40 minutes to the ship and then go up 150 steps into the ship and the same procedure was

followed on the return. It was hectic, yes, but the view from the ship was breathtaking and in the evening we could see other ships in the horizon,” shares Megha.

Megha,who happens to be an equestrian and a capoeirista also had great fun with her co-stars especially Rajit Kapur with whom she had worked earlier too.

Talking about her equation with him, Megha says, “Rajit Kapoor is a lot of fun, I worked with him on a Radio Drama for BBC much before Dam 999. He has a great sense of humour, and would be cracking jokes before takes,” she says, going on to add, “All the other actors were great to work with too. Jineet is a great kid; he stayed up way past his bedtime without making a fuss.” While she hopes that

Dam 999 serves as a stepping stone for her into the world of Bollywood, Megha has already made her presence felt in Tollywood. She had debuted in Hari Yelleti’s debut film Ankit Pallavi and Friends and for this role too the actress got spotted in a commercial. “The director of my Telugu film saw a commercial of mine on air. He flew to Mumbai to audition some other actors and myself. He was looking for a girl fresh out of college to portray the character of Pallavi. I seemed to fit the part and next thing I knew I was filming in Hyderabad,” explains Megha on how she got signed up for the film. She also learned a few of the popular Telugu songs and would often sing on the sets, “I miss the idly-sambar breakfast heaps though!” says Megha.

Filmmaker stands I did make suggestions for up to Censor Board changes in Heroine: Arjun decree over cuts

A

short film, based on the hero of Indian national movement Bhagat Singh, is likely to be dropped from screening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) by its director as it ran into trouble with the Censor Board for the ‘anti national’ contents.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), has suggested nine cuts in Inklab, a short film by Chandigarh-based filmmaker Gaurav Chhabra, saying its contents are anti-national. Chhabra has defended his portrayal and has refused to budge. The short film, inspired by the landmark Assembly bombing by Bhagat Singh in 1929, was part of the Short Film Centre and was short-listed by the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) to be showcased at IFFI 2011.

When contacted, the ESG officials said they were told by the filmmaker that “he might drop the film due to censor board issues”. Chhabra, quoting his communication with the CBFC, has said that the board has refused him certificate saying the film violates section 5 B of the Cinematographic Act 1952. The section bars a movie with visuals or words promoting communal, obscurantist, anti-scientific and anti-national sentiments. Chhabra said the CBFC letter has PTI come as a “rude shock” for him.

eroine is no longer just a Kareena Kapoor’s film.

It’s now a love story between an actress and an actor, thanks to Arjun Rampal’s insistence on a his role being clearly and comprehensively fleshed out in the movie.

Apparently Arjun had two long discussions with the film’s producers

UTV and director Madhur Bhandarkar where he suggested changes in the script. These suggestions were duly accepted and incorporated.

To his credit Arjun doesn’t deny asking for changes in the Heroine script. “I did make some suggestions which I thought were for the betterment of the film. They were kind enough to accept these changes,” said Arjun, who came into his own with his national award winning performance in Rock On!!

“I don’t mind doing heroineoriented films. I’ve done one with Kareena in the past (We Are Family). But at this point in my career I cannot do supporting roles. Heroine is basically a love story between the actress and the actor played by me. It’s a challenge for me because I’ve never played an actor before,” added the 38-year-old.

Arjun has also ensured that he is projected as the solo male lead of Heroine and he is all set to start shooting for the film on his birthday, which is on IANS Saturday.

Neelima Sangamithra, one of the producers of Panjaa, came up with the idea of putting Panjaa’s merchandise up for sale and they tied up with Basic Life stores.

“This is the first time that Arka Media is selling movie merchandise and it’s tough to make inroads in the market since people expect merchandise like t-shirts, chains, stickers to be given free of cost,” Preetham reveals.

Another trend which is quite prominent in the movie merchandise business is that the local vendors try to encash the hype surrounding anything which is in vogue.

here’s a joke in Hollywood that quite often producers don’t prefer making films if they can’t sell toys and apparel under the film’s brand name.

Take the example of Disney’s smash hit, Cars. The film raked in $460 million at the box-office worldwide, but Disney ended up making more than $5 billion on the sale of merchandise alone! While film merchandising is a huge aspect of film production in the US, it’s still not a priority for Indian film-makers, although Bollywood is slowly trying to generate revenue from sale of merchandise.

The Telugu film industry is yet to find a breakthrough in this space. However, some producers have made an earnest attempt to generate buzz prior to the film’s release through the sale of movie merchandise.

In the past few years, makers of films like Jhonny, Orange, Mogudu and now Panjaa have jumped into this bandwagon of film merchandising.

Back in 2003, when Pawan Kalyan’s Johnny had released, Geetha Arts launched Johnny T-shirts, caps, bike and car stickers to generate hype about the film.

“Those products were a rage back then and in the past few years very few Telugu films managed to create hype around its merchandise,” says Allu Sirish, the son of Allu Arvind who produced Johnny.

“In 2010, when the Ram Charan Tej starrer Orange was set for release, Levis launched the Orange line of apparel and they did quite well,” Sirish

adds. Recently, Kalamandir tied up with the makers of Gopichand, Taapsee starrer Mogudu and launched a new wedding collection in their stores to promote their products and the film.

“It was a strategic move and a win-win situation for all of us. Since the film revolves around a wedding, it fit in quite well into our core business,” says Prasad Chalavadi, Chairman and MD of Kalamandir.

“The clothes were specially designed in Delhi, Jaipur and Lucknow and the response has been great from our cus-

tomers,” he adds.

Last year, Krsala Jewellery was part of Nagavalli’s promotions and they launched a new line of jewellery based on the accessories worn by Anushka and Venkatesh in the film. Recently, Levis was one of the brand partners of Dookudu.

Apart from the clothes worn by the lead actors in Dookudu, the aviators worn by Mahesh Babu and Sonu Sood sparked a new trend. However, none of these attempts are showing any tangible benefits to the producers.

“The market hasn’t evolved

quite popular,” Sirish says and adds, ”If you look at the world statistics, more than 70 per cent of the revenue generated from movie merchandising comes from sale of apparel.

It’s very important to have an organised retail sector if movie merchandise has to click in India. Sadly, it’s quite unorganised right now and India will remain a very small market for movie merchandising.”

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.

Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
