ever in the recent past has the Nampally court complex witnessed something like this. Almost a dozen arraigned movers and shakers in politics and bureaucracy were brought in today for hearing of various cases. The star attraction, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who has been in central prison for over three months in the disproportionate assets and conspiracy case was the first to be brought in. He was escorted to a bulletproof Scorpio at 10.15am by the jail authorities. Clad in a blue shirt and grey pants, Jagan’s had a broad smile as he folded greeted followers, policemen and media with folded palms. Jagan is the prime suspect among 75 persons and corporates named in the CBI FIR. The roles of six Congress ministers and an equal number of bureaucrats in the issuance of 26 GOs are also being probed. Raja and friends recently went about violating the police commissioner’s directive to maintain timing for puja. He and his colleagues, Umesh Singh and Megha Rani, conducted puja after the scheduled time and allegedly abused the police. The City police have formed a special team exclusively to maintain law and order during Ganesh Puja, DCP Akun Sabharwal said.

Gali Janardhana Reddy, involved in the mining case, was produced in anti-corruption bureau court at Purani Haveli. By 11.30 the court had posted the hearing of Nimmagadda, Brahmanand, Samuel, Manmohan and two others to Oct 9. Dharmana was granted bail on two sureties.

o avoid trouble and the media glare, the City police have been zealously guarding the fact that so many of the VIP suspects were being produced before the court at one go. But news leaked out and by 10am the Nampally court premises and surroundings were full of policemen, lawyers and media persons. No ordinary litigant could get in and lawyers holding briefs of other cases were left high and dry. Adding to the pressure, six terror-accused persons including

Viquar Ahmed, were also brought in today. The whole area surrounding Nampally court lost their day's business as police prevailed upon shop-keepers to close down as a precautionary measure. The two ways leading to entry points of the court — road from Lakdikapul and Bazaar ghats — also witnessed a traffic snarl. “God, don’t bring all of them together," a harassed pedestrian who was being chided by a policeman was heard saying.

he State government has chalked out massive plans for procurement of urea during the ensuing Rabi season. The illpreparedness of the State government during the ongoing Khariff

season led to huge criticism of the State government by Opposition political parties and farmers’ community across the State. To avoid this, the agriculture department of the State government has initiated steps to put in place an advance plan for the Rabi season. The department has already pre-

pared estimations on requirement of various seeds for the Rabi season. Agriculture minister K Lakshminarayana recently held a high review meeting with officials concerned on the issue and directed them to take necessary steps to avoid any last minute problem. Speaking to Postnoon, the minister said that the State government would take all necessary steps to help the farmers. He informed that the department is planning to procure various seeds from different sources to distribute them to the farmers. The department has already procured 2.65 lakh quintals of groundnut and 3.51 lakh quintals of Bengal gram seeds for the distribution purpose. The distribution is expected to in October next month.

he GHMC commissioner has directed all the medical officers to be vigil while performing their duties and to identify the disease hot spots and to take special focus of these spots for prevention and control of the communicable diseases. MT Krishna Babu, along with Syed Ali Murtuza Rizvi, collector, Hyderabad held a review meeting with medical officers in the wake of the spread of communicable diseases. He directed the medical officers for effective implementation of OSRT System with proper time schedule and lifting of garbage time to time personally coordinating with the lower staff so that the work will be up to the expectations in maintaining sanitation. Some of the doctors have briefed the commissioner that the workers are not taking up anti-larval operations in most of the areas for which the commissioner directed the chief ento-

mologist to call for the explanations of the staff who are not attending the anti-larval operations and AMOHs to take up sanitation works effectively. The commissioner further directed the additional commissioner (H&S) and chief entomologist to involve slum level federation workers in the anti -larval operations. He has also proposed incentives (utility items) to encourage hard work and for better implementation of anti-

larval operations for the next 30 days. He has also directed the AMOHs to interact with the Slum Level Federation at the Circle level and personally monitor the works which are being taken up at their circle level. The collector, Hyderabad district briefed the commissioner about a workshop which was conducted in the Hyderabad Collectorate a few days back. According to him nearly 70 to 80 per cent of the hot spots

have been identified in some of the slums and requested the commissioner for effective implementation of anti-larval operations in these hot spots. He emphasised on the need for them to take up the sanitation works on priority basis to control the communicable diseases for which the commissioners has directed the chief entomologist to take up the works on priority basis at the identified hot spots.

ANALYSIS

‘Now or never’ is TDP’s slogan PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com

T

DP leaders believe the YSRC will return to its parental fold by 2014, leaving the political space to TDP. The party, therefore, must get itself readied to don its mandated role of the main Opposition. The thoughts gleaming through the party leaders’ discussions during the fifth death

anniversary of former TDP minister Damacharla Anjaneyulu at TDP Bhavan on Saturday throws light on the direction that the party wants to take. The leaders believe that the party has led others in announcing a prominent space for backward castes, which was promptly taken over by the Congress. “That shows we were on the right tracks,” said party’s Rajya Sabha MP, Y Sujana Chowdary. Now, the party is preparing

its plan for minorities. The party leadership believes that if it recaptured the vision of its founder NTR, it would come back to power as the late leader lives in the hearts of millions in AP. It was the NTR’s vision which was realised by Naidu that farmers of the State are the feeders who ought to be taken care of first. Rythu Sanghams and the marketing of agro-products helped the farmers and the

people alike. “The Congress is anti-farmer and it stands only for the rich people,” was the general belief of the party. The top leaders also admitted that it failed to present its services properly before the voters. Now that the T issue was being thrashed out and the party has left its decision to the Centre, there would not be a Telangana trouble for the party, they believe.

Countdown to Co P Hyderabad 2012

No blackouts for conference A separate power line and a dedicated generator has been allocated for the CoP-11 venue. Citizens, though, may continue to face power cuts for the next nine months. compensate for the other three areas in the City. Which means, some villages and hamlets along the North division of the Ranga Reddy district will bear the brunt of the continuous power supply. As it is, agricultural sector in and around Hyderabad has failed to receive its promised seven-hour power supply schedule. Officials, however, are confident that the load diversion will not have any adverse effects.

RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com

A

s part of the arrangements for CoP-11, a separate power line has been allocated to the conference venue. The power precautionary measures were taken up by the CPCDCL under the watchful eyes of chief principal secretary Minnie Matthew, who has been overseeing the City’s preparations for the biodiversity meet. According to CH Madan Mohan Rao, superintendent engineer (SE) of Rangareddy North Circle, “The HT power line will be drawing from two separate feeders. These feeders have been dedicated to that line entirely, with a bearing load of 3 MVA. These two feeders, namely the Jubilee Hills 132 KV sub-station feeder and the Madhapur 132 KV sub-station feeder, will be handling the load for the event.” All power outages will be controlled by these two feeders, although experts say that a backup power facility is present at the HITEX venue itself in case of any emergencies. “A silent diesel generator set is present at the venue, in case the two feeders

fail and there is a total blackout. It is highly unlikely that any such incident will occur, but it is best to be prepared,” said R Hampaiah, chairman of the Biodiversity Board. The question then on everybody’s mind is how will Madhapur and Jubilee Hills survive when these two feeders have been pressed expressly into

the venue’s service? “The Gachibowli 132 KV feeder sub-station will be handling the power load of these two areas and to make it a dedicated feeder, it has already started working as per the planned system,” said the SE. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Zone draws power from the APCPDCL’s central power grid, whose 220 KV EHT sub-stations are located at Chandrayangutta, Shivrampally, Shapurnagar and Moula Ali, each designed to bear the load of their respective divisions. The current peak load demand within the City is 1,500 MW and the average consumption of the City figures at 20 MU as against the demand of 25 MU. With no great hydel generation power and the absence of gas supplies, the situation is only going to get worse. Officials say Hyderabad will have to bear with power cuts for the next nine months until the monsoons generate enough hydel power.

Municipal waste: Window dressing continues None of GHMC’s solid waste management projects are underway. The corporation is busy burying waste in the outskirts. Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com

T

he GHMC’s solid waste management continues to be a mess with not one of the several projects on the move. With the world conference at the threshold, the corporation has resorted to a familiar knee-jerk reaction and is busy trying to bury waste in the outskirts. Nearly 4,000 metric tonnes of garbage is being collected daily from 4,000 bins across the City. Some 650 vehicles are engaged. But the same old system of shifting dirt from the core City to peripheral areas continues. Some of the transit dumping yards the Corporation owns are in Yousufguda, Lower Tank Bund, Salarjung Bridge and Ashok Nagar. From these places,

Nearly 4,000 metric tonnes of garbage is being collected daily from 4,000 bins across the City and shifted to peripheral areas. the waste is again transported to Jawaharnagar in the outskirts of the City. Khairatabad ward alone has 300 garbage bins, collected at Yousufguda dumping yard. In the wake of CoP-11, though the GHMC has removed most of the garbage containers from the main roads as part of its beautification efforts, the core issue continues to burn. Officials advocate patience. “It will take time for the materialisation of these projects,” says one of the officials. The pro-

ject, in partnership with Ramky, continues to be in limbo with the company’s rigid stance and cor-

poration’s lackadaisical attitude. Even the much-hyped power projects, wherein power is gener-

ated using solid waste, have not inched forward for several years. The erstwhile MCH had entered an MoU with RDF Power Projects in 2000 to establish a 11 MW power generation plant by conversion of 700 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste per day with a total project cost of `82.5 crore. The government body NREDCAP (New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation) has recently sought an extension for sorting out the issue by the end of the year. A major stumbling block for finding a lasting solution to solid waste management is the lack of segregation of various wastes at source. Plastic wastes continue to pose the most serious threat and the failure of the State government and the GHMC to curb plastic use is said to be a major reason.

Reminding that there were 20,000 tanks in the State, he said that development works would be taken up immediately at 100 tanks. Countdown to Co P EXTINCTION IS IMMINENT Since life began on Earth, five major mass extinctions and several minor events have led to large and sudden drops in biodiversity. The Phanerozoic aeon (the last 540 million years) marked a rapid growth in biodiversity via the Cambrian explosion — a period during which the majority of multicellular phyla first appeared. The next 400 million years included repeated, massive biodiversity losses classified as mass extinction events. In the Carboniferous, rainforest collapse led to a great loss of plant and animal life. The Permian–Triassic extinction event, 251 million years ago, was the worst; vertebrate recovery took 30 million years. The most recent, the Cretaceous– Paleogene extinction event, occurred 65 million years ago, and has often attracted more attention than others because it resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs. The period since the emergence of humans has displayed an ongoing biodiversity reduction and an accompanying loss of genetic diversity. Named the Holocene extinction, the reduction is caused primarily by human impacts, particularly habitat destruction. Conversely, biodiversity impacts human health in a number of ways.

Why biodiversity matters Biodiversity provides the raw materials for food, medicines, and industries that support life.

GREEN Humans consume 7,000 plant species as food.

Biodiversity — the variety of plants, world — is a measure of our planet’s destruction, and the introduction of Earth’s biodiversity. It’s time we take act together before it’s too late. Don’t

Overexploitation 1.6 billion of the world’s population rely on forests for their livelihood.

85% of ocean fisheries are categorised as fully exploited, overexploited or depleted.

Half of the synthetic drugs have a natural origin, including 10 of the highest-selling drugs in the US.

70% of the world’s poor live in rural areas and depend directly on biodiversity for their survival and well-being.

The extinction rate today is 100 times greater than the level it was before humans walked the Earth.

50% of the Earth’s wetlands were destroyed in the 20th century.

Invasive species 19,817 species are listed as endangered.

Invasive alien species were a factor in more than 50% of vertebrate extinctions where the cause was known, and they were the sole cause of 20% of extinctions. Annually, invasive species like the water hyacinth cost economies $1.4 trillion.

animals, and ecosystems in the health. Overexploitation, habitat invasive species are threatening stock of the situation and get our let our planet die.

Black market demands

The UN 2020 targets for biodiversity call for the protection of 17% of the land and 10% of coastal and marine areas.

The global black market in wildlife smuggling and poaching, illegal fishing, and illegal logging is valued at $70.5 billion per year. That’s more market value than software piracy.

Over 8% of global forest under active production is now certified as sustainably managed.

$59bn

$70.5bn

An estimated 600 rhinos will be poached in South Africa alone this year, up from 13 in 2007. Rhino horns can sell for $30,000 per kg.

Fewer than 3,500 tigers are left in the wild. Tiger skins sell for up to $20,000.

Species numbers and population sizes have dropped by almost 30% in the past 100 years.

Official development aid for biodiversity more than doubled between 2005 and 2010, from $3.1 billion in 2005 to $6.9 billion in 2010.

Two species have gone extinct every day since 2010.

RESTORING THE BALANCE Removal of exotic species will allow the species that they have negatively impacted to recover their ecological niches. Exotic species that have become pests can be identified taxonomically (eg. with Digital Automated Identification SYstem (DAISY), using the barcode of life). Removal is practical only given large groups of individuals due to the economic cost. n As sustainable populations of the remaining native species in an area become assured, “missing” species that are candidates for reintroduction can be identified using databases such as the Encyclopedia of Life and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. n Biodiversity banking places a monetary value on biodiversity. One example is the Australian Native Vegetation Management Framework. n Gene banks are collections of specimens and genetic material. Some banks intend to reintroduce banked species to the ecosystem (e.g. via tree nurseries). n Reduction of and better targeting of pesticides allows more species to survive in agricultural and urbanized areas. n Location-specific approaches may be less useful for protecting migratory species. One approach is to create wildlife corridors that correspond to the animals' movements.

INTERVIEW

Confessions of a beauty queen Aneesha Chowdary, who was the only Telugu girl to make it to the top five finalists at the recent ‘I Am She’ beauty paegent, recounts the experience and how she missed the crown by a whisker.

HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com

T

here’s a reason why filmmakers in the Telugu film industry hardly cast Telugu speaking actresses in their films and instead look for aspiring actresses or models from Mumbai. Acting in films and modeling is still considered a taboo in most Telugu households. No wonder, it was a pleasant surprise when people realised that one of the finalists in the ‘I Am She’ beauty pageant, which was recently held in Hyderabad, was a Telugu girl from Hyderabad. Aneesha Chowdary impressed a lot of people at the contest and she was within touching distance from ending up in the top three contestants, who’ll represent India, at Miss Universe, Miss Globe International and Miss Asia Pacific World beauty pageants later this year. “I think it was sheer bad luck that I couldn’t make it to the top three despite being the best performer until I reached the

final round,” Aneesha recalls. Her disappointment is palpable and she confesses, “It's been three days since the contest ended and I still keep dreaming that there was no echo and I gave the correct answer in the final round.” Born and brought up in Hyderabad, she completed her schooling from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Public school and later, when she got admission in BITSPilani, she chose to stay back in Hyderabad. “I was a good student in school and in my intermediate first year, I got 4th rank in the entire State. I had got an admit in a five year programme at BITS-Pilani; however, I am the only child and I didn’t want to pursue the five-year programme, so I decided to stay back in Hyderabad,” Aneesha says. She graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Muffakham Jah college of Engineering and Technology and went on to work with Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) in Singapore for almost three and half years. Quite rarely does one come across a Telugu girl like her who would leave a lucrative job and take part in a beauty pageant. So how did her parents react? “I come from a conservative family and I had to convince them a lot,” she smiles and adds, “they wanted me to do an MBA from ISB and I convinced them saying that taking part in this beauty paegent will really help me build a diverse profile.” A smart move, indeed. As cliched as it may sound, Aneesha says that she never wanted to be a model. What made her change her mind? “I have always wanted to represent India at an international level. I wanted to play cricket but I was told by NCA that I was too old to take up sports. I was quite disappointed, but I Am She seemed like a good option to represent India. I won’t deny that I want name and fame that comes along with representing India, but it also gives people a great platform to follow their heart,” she says. So what did she really want to do? “On my 18th birthday, I went to Sishu Vihar and I was heartbroken to see that out of 30 babies, 27 were girls; all of them healthy. It was a disturbing sight and ever since I have been contributing some part of my income for their well being. For a long time, I had been thinking

sions revolved around improving our diction and etiquette. I was very good at both of them, so it was a breeze when I made it to the top 5,” Aneesha recalls. Judges at most beauty pageants are notorious when it comes to asking contestant questions, which can range from how will she change the world to how she’ll help bring global peace. But Aneesha faced a trickier question – What came first – The Egg or the Chicken? “According to me the egg came first because as a child, I ate egg first and until a certain age, I didn’t taste chicken” was her reply, which received a thunderous response. “It really was a spontaneous reply. Sushmita Sen had specifically told us to be honest with our answers and not give cliched ones. Unfortunately, most contestants do not follow such instructions,” she laughs. In the final round, which she thought would be a cake walk, she was asked “What are the three qualities that a woman should possess to represent

about quitting my job, be actively involved with NGOs, raise funds and do something for the underprivileged,” she reveals. Naturally, her decision to take part in the beauty paegent came as a huge shock to her parents. “I didn’t tell them when I applied for the initial round last year,” she says. But the most discomforting part of the whole journey was the bikini round. “I had no idea that there was going to be a bikini round on stage in the final round and it got worse when I came to know that the media was going to be present. At one point of time, I wanted to

quit, but the I Am She team convinced me to stay back,” she reveals. How did her parents react? “My friends told me after the show that my father was restless and he had walked out during that round,” she says, teary eyed. “I really wanted to win this for my father. He has always been my biggest support, be it a banking job or a beauty paegent.” The biggest learning experience, she says, was walking on the ramp and being comfortable in a bikini. “I lost nearly 10 kg in six months for the beauty paegent. Most of the training ses-

India, that you have learnt from I Am She?” There was an echo which cost her dearly. “I couldn’t hear the last part of the question, so I answered — self confidence, self belief and traditional values from parents. The last one was out of context, which worked against me,” she recalls, and adds, “Sushmita had told us that confidence and how you talk are more important than what you say. There’s a lot of partiality throughout the show because the winner made it from top 10 to top 5, despite stammering and giving irrelevant answers ” So what’s next? Is acting on the cards? “I haven’t thought about anything. I’ve been approached for a lot of fashion weeks. Every one came and told me that I was a winner for them and I deserved to win,” she says, adding, “but I would try to convince my parents again, if I get a chance to act alongside Mahesh Babu or Prabhas.” Those final words are proof enough that she’s a quintessential Telugu girl.

The government's decisions to allow FDI in retail and aviation have created political turmoil with key ally TMC pulling out of the UPA and opposition parties, both from political right and left, demanding a rollback. Sonia Gandhi also expressed concern over communal violence in Assam in July that claimed 97 lives and left 4.8 lakh people in relief camps. IANS

Olympus, 3 former execs plead guilty

MEXICO CITY: Recent action taken by major central banks has bought governments time to spur growth but the European debt crisis and other risks still threaten the world economy, G20 officials said Monday. Deputy finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of 20 wealthy and emerging nations discussed the risks to the global economy, the eurozone crisis and food price volatility during talks Sunday and Monday in Mexico City. The eurozone debt crisis, the tightening US budget and slower growth in emerging economies are the “most serious risks to the world economy,” Mexican central bank deputy governor Manuel Ramos Francia told a news conference.

The case was originally thrust into the spotlight last year by Michael Woodford, who replaced Kikukawa at the head of the company and became the first foreigner to lead the camera and endoscope maker. We worked hard to see different possibilities and achieve them. This helped us to add new customers to our base. “ISB Goldman Sachs programme has helped me greatly in coining new marketing strategies for the business. The decision was immediately welcomed by the home secretary, Theresa May, who said the Home Office would work to hand over the five to the US authorities as quickly as possible. The home secretary will be keen to avoid the confusion that delayed the removal of Abu Qatada to Jordan earlier this year. The five suspects are expected to be on a plane within weeks. The suspects involved include the radical cleric Abu Hamza, 54, who is wanted by the US in connection with plans to establish a terrorist training camp in Bly, Oregon, as well as allegations that he provided material support to the Taliban.

magine if the person you most respected was also the person you needed to fear the most. Imagine the paranoia. And it is that paranoia that makes Homeland so watchable. As the Showtime drama scooped up Emmy after Emmy on Sunday night one thing is clear, America is coming to terms with its barbaric policies enshrined in its psyche after September 11, 2001 That’s one of the amazing things about that muchmaligned country; it errs often and on many occasions catastrophically, but not only does it always find a way out of the mire, but is self-deprecating enough to allow its citizens to take it to task after the period of wound-licking is over. Post-September 11, 2001 the US went stir crazy with Islamophobia not seen in the West since Pope Urban II unleashed hell on the Middle East in 1095. When a country is blinded by rage the first thing it loses is all sense of proportion, next to go is its humanity and finally it lets slip its sanity. Luckily for the world somewhere along the way Americans decided to was time to rein in the gust of devastating jingoism. Two wars later the US has decided it’s time to sterilise the wounds once and for all. Homeland is as much an indictment of America’s rendition policies as it is a humanising look at Islam. The fact that it won so heavily on Sunday signals the beginning of a new age of understanding in the world’s most powerful democracy. The writer is editor, Postnoon.

have this friend in the neighbourhood who arranges for a female Thai masseuse to provide her services in the comfort of one’s home. Somehow I managed to convince myself that I needed a well-deserved pampering and celebrate the last day of freedom while the husband is still away on vacation. As I waited for the Thai lady’s arrival all stories of the infamous massage from the land of promiscuity started resurfacing, with my fertile imagination adding fuel to fire. The massage that ended in a threesome, that a friend had described...only there was no third party here. You are not a true desi if you are not a fatalist, so whatever will be will be. A diminutive figure, her giant umbrella barely providing relief from the 45 C plus temperature, she was around my children’s age. My amorous imaginations took the quickest nosedive possible as my maternal side emerged. Soon I was stretched out on some towels while she went about arranging her paraphernalia with the precision of a surgeon checking his surgical instruments. I have to say here that crisp sun dried

towels are great for a vigorous towelling after a shower but not so great when you have to lie on them for 2 hours (which reminds me to check myself for lacerations). Lying face down for an extended period is also not the best position to be in unless you are built like Twiggy. I do not know why people say that a massage is relaxing. It is anything but that. As she leisurely reached for each sinew and ripped it apart, I dangled my arms along the edge of the bed and held on..not willing to expose so early in the game what a wimp I was! Each lump of cellulite was explored and brutally manipulated and buried a few inches deeper than its original position. Perhaps this was what all those ads of exorbitant potions meant when they claimed they could work miracles by “breaking the cellulite”. Somethings nurtured over 48 years would not go away so quickly. Kudos to the masseuse for her optimism though. As she reached for places, which in the words of ‘Star Trek’ “where no man has gone before” ....well at least not in very many years, she came upon my curved spine and exclaimed, “What is this?” She had chanced upon the hump that I been nurturing since my previous birth as Hunchback of Notredame!

Before I could apologise for my deshaped body she spied my wrist which until now had seemed normal.”This is the reason for this” and with that she thumped my spine and squeezed my wrist. With my pain level shooting from a scale of 0 to 9 just half an hour into this exercise, I would have agreed with her even if she had claimed that I was Stephen Hawkings! God is kind and respite came when she went to answer the doorbell. I was a woman taking a breather between labor pains! As the saying goes bakre ki amma kab tak khair manayegi so pretty soon we were back into the leisurely one sided game of torture. Now she was fixing a tendon along the side of my neck and between clenched teeth I heard her whisper “Come”. I’m not sure which ver-

sion of the word she was using because I was nowhere near any orgasmic delight! On the contrary I was concentrating on averting a cramp in one of my toes by twisting it against the bed. Just as the cramp was ebbing she spotted my fidgety foot and firmly put it in the “relax” position! Perhaps this massage thing gets better after the first time. Much like the dentist’s drill which seemed like a digger breaking concrete on my first visit. Now as a veteran I can rhapsodise over my Swiss dentist. So someday I will attempt this “relaxation” again but for now if I need some pampering I will opt for a pedicure ..that is if she refrains from pushing the cuticle. t is in tumultuous times that Manmohan Singh turns 80 tomorrow. When he looks back, however, he has reason to rejoice. For once again history will remember him as the one who has set the kegs of economic development moving that has long been slowed down thanks to pandering to Didis and many a luddite. The decision to allow foreign direct investment may have cost him Mamata’s Banerjee’s support, but for too long has she been having her way holding the governing coalition to ransom; everyone knew this had to happen one day and it has. Perhaps Mamata did not think the Congress would show the spine to reply tit-for-tat pulling its ministers from the West Bengal Cabinet she heads. Singh has been criticised by one and all for the poor economic growth of the country. Even the foreign press did not spare him: the Time called him “The underachiever”; and the Washington Post said he has been reduced from an object of respect to one of ridicule. They may have forgotten that the US president, when he needed advice before the Rio Summit, rang up Manmohan. Singh’s journey so far has been special, too. There was not much to be hoped for one of the 10 sons of a poor vendor. But this son was special; his father would joke that his son would be prime minister one day because he studied so hard. That way Singh is an inspiration. Singh may not be a great orator, he’s certainly no rabble-rouser; he may lack the charm of many a successful leader. But in these times, we need level-headed people like him at the helm.

DID YOU KNOW?

New hands on board

With a new owner comes, more responsibilities, a new management style and sometimes even losing jobs. A lot changes for the employees as well. AMY ROSE THOMAS amyrose.t@postnoon.com

W

hile some employees voluntarily give up their salary for saving the company is on the brink of the company’s acquisition, many others are frustrated with the company for ruining their career as most of the times, in such circumstances, many employees are let off due to financial problems. So what if the inevitable happens and the business changes hands? What are the points that an employee has to keep in mind when his company is on the brink of being taken over?

When a large company with a more structured organisation is acquiring a smaller one, many changes would be incorporated including rigid management style as opposed to the informal open door policy that employees were accustomed to. “Freedom will be curtailed with new regulations and rules to follow. I don’t think I will be comfortable in such an environment as I am so used to the open door policy and relaxed approach that we follow at the office I work for now. But on the other hand, if a bigger company takes over, that means the company would have become bigger and wider reach for the com-

pany,” Nidhi, an IT professional says. For employees, the most unfortunate outcome of a company changing hands is if the new owners decide to reduce staff, or bring in their own people for the job. However, a former employee with Satyam says that there’s nothing that an employee could do in such circumstances. “As a low-rung employee, one can only embrace the change and hope that the new company takes care of you as much as the previous company did. However, the situation would have certainly been different for employees in senior

positions who had a lot more at stake. “In the early days of Satyam's takeover by Tech Mahindra, there were a lot of questions over what sort of changes are going to be made in company's structure and policies. The fact that in most mergers and acquisitions, a lot of employees are fired was another issue to worry about. Eventually, thousands of employees were asked to take a sabbatical till the company recovers financially,” he says. Thus, it is always helpful if you have a back-up option ready when you know that your company will shut shop soon.

CHALLENGES TO FACE AFTER THE ACQUISITION

Reorganisation

A

change in business ownership usually brings about changes to the organisational structure. Management at all levels may be changed, and even departmental or office duties may be reorganised, so employees have to deal with new supervisors and with being given new responsibilities, which in the beginning some employees may resent.

Systems integration

W

hen two companies merge, one company may have to replace its existing system with the one used by its merger partner. This can be a painful process that results in a temporary disruption of information flow, and a reduction in productivity as employees have to take the time to learn the new system.

New strategic direction

O

ne of the exciting aspects of a business changing hands comes when the new owners implement their own strategic plan for growing the business. The new owners may challenge employees to significantly increase sales or improve operational efficiency. This new strategic direction can re-energise the entire organisation.

New management style

T

he new owners of a company may have a different management style than the previous ones, which means an adjustment period for employees. When a large company with a more structured organisation acquires a smaller one, the changes could include employees having to deal with a significant number of new rules.

MATTERS OF THE HEART

Broke your heart?

Dying of heart break is not just make-believe. The Broken Heart Syndrome is very real and does claim several lives, especially in women. Factfile

H

ow often have you come across a scene in a movie where a mother or father suffer a massive cardiac arrest on hearing some unfortunate news and die soon after. Might have seemed too far-fetched to you. But did you know that dying of a broken heart is a very real phenomenon that claims several lives. Medically known as Stress Induced Cardiomyopathy it is also popularly called the Broken Heart Syndrome or Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy.

n

n

WHAT IT IS “When an individual is exposed to an acute psychological event like losing a loved one, there is a surge of the hormone catecholamine from the autonomic system. However, this hormone is toxic to the heart muscles which are made up of myocardial cells. When high levels of the catecholamine hormone is released it sends the myocardial cells go into a state of depression and the heart stops contracting. This results in heart failure,” explains Dr Sharath Reddy, consultant interventional cardiologist at Sunshine Hospitals.

SYMPTOMS The patient will go into a sudden state of severe breathlessness, sometimes sudden cardiac arrest or there will be electrical

abnormalities in the heart. This can lead to sudden cardiac death in patients. “Incidentally, this can also occur due to consumption of drugs like cocaine, an acute medical illness that causes stress and also post traumatic

Histiocytosis is a general name for a group of syndromes that involve an abnormal increase in the number of immune cells called histiocytes. There are three major classes of histiocytoses — Langerhans cell histiocytosis (histiocytosis X), malignant histiocytosis syndrome and Non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Histiocytosis X has typically been thought of as a cancer-like condition.

Fact 1: Takotsubo is a Japanese vessel used to drink tea. During stress induced cardiomyopathy, the heart changes shape and resembles a takotsubo with the lower portion of the heart getting dilated. Fact 2: The cases of Broken Heart Syndrome are more in women than in men, since women are said to be more emotional. Fact 3: Stress induced cardiomyopathy can occur due to either an emotional trauma, stress of a surgery and even due to cocaine intake.

way in saving a patient’s life. “If a person suffers from palpitations or breathlessness after an emotional upheaval, he/she should be immediately taken to a tertiary healthcare centre. An ECG will mimic a heart attack. But when an angiogram is carried out it will reveal that there are no blocked arteries and all the blood vessels will be normal.” That is when doctors will ask for an LV angiogram, which will show the changed shape of the heart, called the apical ballooning syndrome (since the apex of the organ dilates),” says Dr Reddy. The patient is then given beta blockers to block the effects of catecholamine. If there are rhythm disturbances and heart failure then they are treated accordingly, says Dr Reddy. “Normally a patient’s condition should improve within three to five days.”

CONTRACEPTION

BREAKTHROUGH

‘Teens should use IUDs, hormonal implants’ The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology is recommending that teen girls use IUDs or implantable contraception to avoid pregnancy.

T

he American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the leading group of gynaecologists in the United States, is recommending that teen girls use intrauterine devices (IUDs) or implantable contraception rather than the birth control pill, patch, ring or shot to avoid pregnancy, ABC News reported. The group also recommends that teens use condoms at all times to avoid sexuallytransmitted diseases, CBS News reported. In guidelines released this week, the group said doctors should discuss IUDs and hormonal implants with sexually active teens at every appointment, CBS News reported. IUDs are inserted into the uterus and last 5 or 10 years, according to ABC News. Hormonal implants, matchstick-sized rods placed under the skin of the upper arm, prevent pregnancy for three years. In contrast, birth control options that doctors traditionally offer to teens, like the pill or patch, are short-acting methods of contraception, ABC News reported. They have higher failure rates than longacting methods, often because teens use them incorrectly or stop using them. “This recommendation is timely and essential,” Dr Ellen Rome, head of the Center for Adolescent Medicine at

Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, told ABC News. “Long-acting reversible contraceptive methods are twice as effective as shorter acting contraceptive methods at reducing teen pregnancy and could make a significant impact in preventing the 750,000 teen pregnancies occurring annually in the United States alone.” Only about 5 per cent of sexually active teens use IUDs or implants, the doctors group

said, according to CBS News. Deterrents to IUD and implant use include price – the long-term devices cost hundreds of dollars – and the fact that they require a doctor to insert them, CBS News reported. However, under the new healthcare law, health insurance plans are required to cover birth control without co-payments. IUDs also got a bad reputation when a device called the Dalkon Shield caused danger-

ous infections in the 1970s, according to CBS News. But the devices have since improved, doctors said. “The ones on the market today are extremely safe,” Dr. Mary Fournier, an adolescentmedicine specialist at Chicago’s Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital who welcomes the new guidelines, told CBS News. “That is what everybody should be telling their patients.” GLOBAL POST

Protein can kick-start male fertility LONDON: Adding a protein could activate infertile human sperm into fertilising an egg, improving chances of a successful pregnancy, says a new study. The team from Cardiff University’s School of Medicine first found that sperm transfers a vital protein, known as PLC-zeta (PLCz), to the egg upon fertilisation. Then it initiates a process called ‘egg activation,’ which switches on all the biological processes necessary for development of an embryo. The team has found that eggs that don’t fertilise because of a defective PLCz, as in some forms of male infertility, can be treated with the active protein to produce egg activation. The added PLCz kick-starts the fertilisation process and significantly improves the chance of a successful pregnancy, the journal Fertility and Sterility reports. “We know that some men are infertile because their sperm fail to activate eggs. Even though their sperm fuses with the egg, nothing happens,” said Tony Lai, professor at Cardiff, who with professor Karl Swann, led the team at Cardiff University’s Institute of Molecular and Experimental Medicine. “These sperm may lack a proper functioning version of PLCz, which is essential to trigger the next stage in becoming pregnant,” Lai added. “What’s important from our research is that we have used human sperm PLCz to obtain the positive results.” “In the lab we have been able to prepare human PLCz protein that is active. If this protein is inactive or missing from sperm, it fails to trigger the process necessary for egg activation,” Lai said. IANS

GENETICS

Backache? Blame your genes LONDON: If you suffer chronic lower backache, then blame your genes, not the lumbar disc generation (LDD) that has long been suspected of being its prime cause, say experts. These discs, which cushion the vertebrae or the backbone, can end up getting squashed and bulging out. Bony growths can also emerge from the spinal column itself and trigger backache. A team led by Frances Williams, genetic epidemiologist at King’s College London, has

found a new gene implicated in back degeneration called PARK2, which could potentially open the way to new treatments. They discovered it by looking for signs of LDD in back scans of 4,600 people, and then sifting their entire genomes. “The impact of hereditary (genetic) factors on LDD is remarkably high. In the 70s and 80s the Scandinavians spent millions looking for all the occupations which caused back pain (sic), but they couldn’t find

them,” said Williams, the Telegraph reports. Studies of identical twins who went into different professions — like truck driving and being a physical education teacher — showed that both ended up with similarly bad lumbar disk degeneration in later life. “Actually, the main variation is caused by genetic factors,” she said. However, the relationship between physical degeneration and long-term (chronic) back-

ache is complicated. “Everybody gets LDD at some point, it’s like going grey. But not everybody gets back pain (sic),” Williams said. Those with more serious physical degeneration are more likely to get chronic backache, but plenty of those whose LDD looks bad feel fine. Williams said genetic studies did not claim to reveal the whole picture, and said people should still take care of their general health to minimise the chance of backache. IANS

Earlier, Samantha had vowed not to sign any new films until she wraps up all her commitments which could be one of the reasons why she hasn't signed the film yet. These days, she's shooting for Nandini Reddy's untitled film in which she's said to be playing the role of a muslim girl. KAKURO

QUICK CROSSWORD

26

SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

NO FIFTY SHADES FOR ROB

T

ROBERT PATTINSON

blames women for making him sensitive

wilight star Robert Pattinson says he is a sensitive guy and has a different mentality because of the women in his life. Pattinson, 26, has reportedly reconciled with his longterm girlfriend Kristen Stewart after her affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders and has so far refused to discuss the cheating scandal, reported Femalefirst. “I guess I’m like relatively sensitive. Also, I had two older sisters so I grew up with lots of girls and so I guess I kind of have a different mentality because of that. And I never really played any team sports or anything, (laughs) so I guess all those things add up to that,” he said. The actor has laughed off the speculation that he is in the running to land the lead role in the big screen adaptation of the bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey. In other news, rumour has it that Rob is only willing to forgive Kristen if she is willing to get married to him and make it a lifelong commitment.

RYDER CUP PREVIEW

LONDON GAMES

Woods, McIlroy ready for another showdown Tiger won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Memorial and the PGA National in 2012, while Rory added the PGA Championship to his US Open.

ATLANTA: World No 1 Rory McIlroy and No 2 Tiger Woods are set to lead their Ryder Cup teams this week after finalround fades cost them a chance at a $10 million US PGA playoff prize. American Brandt Snedeker, a US Ryder Cup captain’s choice selection by Davis Love, won the Tour Championship on Sunday at East Lake to win a record $11.44 million and jump to 10th in the rankings ahead of this weekend’s showdown. Holders Europe boast four of the world’s top five players with England’s Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Justin Rose joining McIlroy in that select group. “I’m just going to really enjoy it. It’s going to be a good week,” McIlroy said. “I’m looking forward to it.” Woods, a 14-time major champion chasing the record of 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus but without a major title since 2008, looked forward to a rest day on Monday before beginning Ryder Cup practice sessions at Medinah. “It will be nice to shut it down and gear up again because we’ve got a long, long week ahead of us,” Woods said.

Tiger Woods (R) and Rory McIlroy pictured together in the just-concluded AFP TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.

“We’re all going to need our energy and get our rest when we can.” Woods, who has seen 18 majors come and go since he last

won one, is happy to be healthier and more competitive and consistent than he was a year ago. “Considering where I was at

last year, it’s nice to be where I’m at now,” he said. “I was obviously struggling with my health last year and this year I was able to turn it around and I played some pretty good golf this year.” Woods won at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Memorial and the PGA National in 2012 and contended at majors, showing flashes of the form that made him a legend but not often enough to capture a major crown. McIlroy won his second career major title, adding last month’s PGA Championship to his breakthrough triumph at the 2011 US Open, and nearly added the playoff crown to his haul. “You’ve got to treat it like a four or five-week tournament,” McIlroy said. “It adds excitement to the end of the year. Obviously, you’ve got the Ryder Cup next week, so that’s going to be exciting too, but it definitely gives people something to watch and something to hang on to after the majors are finished. “I’m not going to complain. It’s been a great year, and I’m very happy with how I’m playing still. AFP

Rest of India topple Rajasthan With a deficit of 311 runs against ROI (607/7 declared), Rajasthan were bundled out for 275. BANGALORE: Rest of India notched up a comprehensive innings and 75 runs victory over Ranji Trophy champion Rajasthan on the fourth day of the Irani Cup match here on Monday. With a deficit of 311 runs against ROI who had declared their first innings at 607 for seven, Rajasthan resumed on 43 for one. After Vinnet Saxena was unfortunately run out for 18, Hrishikesh Kanitkar (right) and Robin Bist batted out of their skin to put up some resistance in the first session at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Kanitkar starred in a 66-run second-wicket partnership with Saxena and then added another 95 runs with Bist for the third wicket. Three run outs in their second innings hurt Rajasthan badly even as ROI bowlers struggled to get wickets early on the final morning. Saxena, Kanitkar and Dishant Yagnik were the batsmen to have got run out. Interestingly, ROI wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik was involved in six dismissals — three runs outs, two catches and a stumping. Barring Kanitkar’s 73 of 151 balls, innings that was laced with ten hits to the fence, none of the batsmen could capitalise on the starts to make substantial scores. Both Saxena (18 off 17) and Yagnik (11 off 16) had got starts, but failed to carry on. The three run outs in their second

Kanitkar rues loss BANGALORE: Having lost to Rest of India in the Irani Cup match, Rajasthan skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar on Monday said that his batsmen failed to spend time in the middle and that proved to be costly for the team. “During the second innings we batted very well. We were in control, but due to three run outs and a few bad shots we folded early. It was just a matter of going on batting,” he told reporters here. The captain, however, denied that his team was tested by the ROI attack, but admitted that the rivals bowled well and his batsmen were up to it to a certain point only. “I think we really batted well in the second innings and in the first innings the wicket was a little different. Robin (Bist) batted very well, but I don’t think we were tested,” he reiterated. PTI

innings meant Rajasthan had lost the plot. It would have been asking for too much for the later batsmen to resurrect the innings. Deepak Chahar was stumped by keeper Karthik off Pragyan Ojha for nine. Soon Rashmi Ranjan Parida left the scene, after being caught by Karthik off Harmeet Singh for 31 off 64 deliveries. Gajendra Singh and Aniket Choudhary were quickly packed off by Singh for naught and 17 respectively. PTI

BANGALORE: Rest of India captain Cheteshwar Pujara praised the spin duo of Pragyan Ojha and youngster Harmeet Singh, who shared six wickets between them in the second innings of Rajasthan. The two spinners did not get a single wicket in the first innings but played key role in the second in team’s big win. Pujara said the job was cut out for spinners to contain Rajasthan in the first innings as the ball was nicely coming on to the bat on the first two days. “In the second innings Pragyan Ojha and Harmeet Singh bowled well and gave our team victory,” he said. Definitely it was a convincing victory and is a good start to the season, Pujara said. “We had a strong team. We needed to deliver and I am happy with the way the match PTI went,” he stated.

COLOMBO: The West Indies qualified for the Super Eights stage of the World Twenty20 after their Group B match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain on Monday. Ireland made 129-6 in their 19 overs before heavy rain at the Premadasa stadium prevented the West Indies from starting their innings. Both teams gained one point each, but the West Indies joined Group B winners Australia in the next round due to a superior net run-rate over the Irish. The West Indies will be placed alongside defending champions England, New Zealand and hosts Sri Lanka in group one of the Super Eights which starts on Thursday. The other half has Australia, South Africa, India and either Pakistan or Bangladesh, with

the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals. The match, watched by barely 1,000 fans, was reduced to 19 overs per side after an hour’s interruption midway through Ireland’s innings due to rain. Chris Gayle (left) turned star performer with the ball with two wickets as the Ireland innings failed to gain any momentum after the West Indies won the toss and elected to field. Niall O’Brien made 25 and Gary Wilson scored 21, before both batsmen fell to Gayle’s offspin. Irish captain William Porterfield was dismissed off the first ball of the match for the second time in a row, bowled by Fidel Edwards. He had also fallen to Australia’s Shane Watson’s first delivery in Ireland’s previous match last week. AFP

FORMULA ONE

US tougher than Asia TALEK HARRIS Agence France-Presse SINGAPORE: McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has warned the United States will prove a much tougher nut to crack than Asia as Formula One prepares for its latest bid to win over the huge potential market. The glitzy, Europe-based motorsport heads to Austin, Texas, in November and will add New Jersey to its schedule next year, after successfully establishing itself in the AsiaPacific region with seven races this year. Singapore’s night race has been guaranteed for another five years until 2017 and India made its debut on a purpose-

built track last year, joining Australia, Japan, Malaysia, China and South Korea on the Asian circuit. But Whitmarsh said Formula One may find the

going tougher in the United States, where Formula One has a chequered history and will be competing with other motorsports. Austin will be America’s first grand prix since 2007. “We’ve got to recognise that we’ve got to work harder at it than probably any market we’ve worked at,” Whitmarsh said during the Singapore Grand Prix race weekend. “We go around parts of Asia, South America and Europe, one could plonk a grand prix down and there’s a natural fanbase. It’s been easy for us and I think we’ve taken it too easy. Whereas in America, they have lots of great sports they’ve got lots of entertainment opportunities other than Formula One.

‘What Anniversary?’ COLOMBO: When MS Dhoni came down to the lobby of Taj Samudra, a person casually walked upto him and wished him “Happy Anniversary” only to find the Indian captain taken aback. “What anniversary? My anniversary (marriage) is in July,” he answered. The gentleman was quick to remind him that he was talking about the fifth anniversary of India’s 2007 World T20 triumph and the skipper got the drift. Call it either the celebration of fifth anniversary of World T20 triumph or clinical demolition of England on Sunday, it was time to enjoy the ‘sun and sand’ of the emerald isle for the Indian cricketers. Bangladesh seek Saqlain’s help

SHAHID HASHMI Agence France-Presse PALLEKELE: Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said feedback from former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq will help counter Saeed Ajmal (right) in their do-or-die clash against Pakistan on Tuesday. Bangladesh need a big win over the 2009 champions in their final group D match to advance to the Super Eights round but Ajmal’s danger looms large after the off-spinner took 4-30 in Pakistan’s 13-run win over New Zealand on Sunday. New Zealand, who have already qualified for Super Eights, beat Bangladesh by 59

runs in the opening group match. The top two teams from the group qualify for the Super Eights. Saqlain regarded as the inventor of “doosra” — off-spinner’s stock delivery which turns the other way and is mastered by Ajmal — is currently serving as Bangladesh’s bowling coach.

Terry meets Ferdinand John Terry and Anton Ferdinand met at the Chelsea captain’s Football Association disciplinary hearing over allegations of racial abuse.

JULIAN GUYER Agencie France-Presse LONDON: John Terry and Anton Ferdinand attended the disciplinary hearing at Wembley on Monday over allegations that the former Chelsea captain of racially abuse racially abused the QPR defender. Ferdinand gave evidence to the independent panel at the hearing, with Terry in attendance

In a separate statement, the FA thanked Terry for his England service. to hear the case against him. Central defender Terry, who dramatically announced his retirement from international football on Sunday, effectively accused the FA of forcing his hand after the governing body pressed on with charges that he racially abused Ferdinand in October. Terry, who has always denied using a racist slur against his opponent, was

found not guilty in a criminal case relating to the incident in a London court in July. Ferdinand was at Wembley all morning, leaving shortly before midday, while Terry — who will reportedly return on Tuesday — left near 3pm local time (1400GMT). The case could last most of the week. England manager Roy Hodgson said on Monday that he had "reluctantly" accepted John Terry's decision to call time on his international career, as the centre-back contested a Football Association racism charge. Despite the controversy, Hodgson picked Terry in his squad for the European Championship in June and wanted to have the 31-year-old involved in England's bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. "I'd like to thank John Terry for his commitment to the England team since I became manager," said Hodgson. "I am of course disappointed to lose a player of John's international experience and ability.”

Internet proves strong marketing tool for Brazilian soccer clubs According to the Ibope institute, 86 per cent of Brazilians who have access to the web use social networks. RIO DE JANEIRO: With sales of exclusive products, online games and contests about who has the greatest number of fans on social networks, Brazilian soccer clubs are battling it out on the Web to reap the bonanza of online marketing. In this huge, soccer-mad country, which will host the 2014 edition, more than 83 million people have access to the Internet and some teams have up to 25 million fans. First division clubs therefore, in addition to having an Internet site, also have a Facebook page, a Twitter account, online television or even a smartphone application. “The connection with the fan

has changed. With the new technologies, clubs are in daily contact with their fans, not just when they go to the stadium,” explained Guilherme Costa, of

LONDON: English Premier League referee Mark Halsey (above) has informed Greater Manchester Police of two abusive tweets following his handling of Sunday’s match between Liverpool and Manchester United. Two tweets were sent out by unhappy Liverpool fans following the game, both of which were met with outrage from other Twitter users. One post, from an account named àjohnwareing1, read: “I hope Mark Halsey gets cancer again and dies” while another from àlfcjohn259 read: “Mark Halsey should’ve died of cancer.” Halsey returned to refereeing in March 2010 and Professional Game Match Officials Limited said in a statement: “PGMO abhors any abuse of match officials whether that is in stadia or outside of it.

Madrid back on track with Rayo win MADRID: Real Madrid kept Barcelona in their sights as an early goal from Karim Benzema put them on their way to a 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano — but they remain eight points behind the Catalan side, who are yet to drop a point this season. Benzema struck after 13 minutes and C Ronaldo added a second mid-way through the second half as Jose Mourinho’s side came out on top in the match suspended on Sunday due to floodlight failure caused by sabotage. In injury time Jose Casado was dismissed for the home side after a second yellow card.
