AUSTRALIA DON’T ASK INDIA TO FOLLOW-ON

P30&31

Peter Siddle ran through the Indian batting line-up despite a fighting knock by Virat Kohli. Australia, however, did not invoke the follow-on and decided to bat again. Looking to set India a winning target in the vicinity of 500 runs, the Aussies soon found themselves three-wickets down with the score at 40. India though, are staring down the barrel of defeat.

Belarus’s Victoria Azarenka upset defending champion Kim Clijsters in three tense sets to reach her first grand slam final at the Australian Open on Thursday.

It may sound weird, but the Oxford University has started to hold quidditch matches, the game that many teens around the world grew up reading about in Harry Potter, on its campus. We take a look at some other sports deemed outlandish, but that could be accorded the status that quidditch enjoys now.

y tradition and culture, they may be Chinese. But they are very much Indian or typical Hyderabadis when it comes to their lifestyles. At a time when Gen-X is more interested in hakka noodles or Schezwan rice, Chinese in Hyderabad prefer daal-chawal or Hyderabadi biryani in their meal. “I love being called a Hyderabadi as I am born and brought up here. I never visited China in my lifetime. I do speak Chinese and follow the traditions taught by our forefathers, but I am a true Hyderabadi,” said SY Liu, president, Hyderabad Overseas Chinese Friendship Association

(HOCFA), who also owns Nanking, the oldest Chinese restaurant in the City. The 53-year-old restaurant was started by his father. The HOCFA is the only Chi-

nese association in the twin cities. Established in 1997, the association celebrates two major festivals — Chinese Spring festival in January and February and

Moon festival in September. Apart from that, they take part in all local festivals. “I very much celebrate Chinese festivals. We recently celebrated our New Year. Every year, the New Year celebrations take place at my farm house. We have the Dragon dance, firecrackers and lip-smacking dishes like chicken chow with vegetables, fish dumplings in grass noodle soup, sticky rice cake, prawn crackers and more. It’s a special dinner for us and members from the association join us during the festivities” adds, SY Liu. There are around 50 to 60 families consisting of 250 to 300 people. “Most of us are self-employed and run our own restaurants. We shut the restaurants for one day to celebrate the festival. It is not easy to take time out for week-long celebrations,” he says. “Our relationship with the City

can be traced back four to five generations. We celebrate Indian festivals like Diwali, Holi and Dussera etc in a big way compared to our Chinese festivals. Many youngsters from our community who are settled in Hyderabad cannot read or write Chinese. They are more fluent with the local languages,” said Alex, owner of the famous City Chinese restaurant, Alex’s Kitchen and Secretary of HOCFA. Many of them own restaurants such as Nanking, Haiking and Chung Hua, apart from shoe and beauty parlour businesses. Quite a few have entered into inter-racial marriages with Hyderabadis. One third of the families converse in their mother tongue and the rest speak Hindi or English at home. Today, the children of the current generation are working in the IT sector and BPOs.

wo days ago ornaments worth `3.50 lakh was lifted from a well-known jeweller at Punjagutta. The shop appealed to the Punjagutta police and within hours they panned the CCTV and zeroed in on a woman who was deftly stowing away the ornament in her dress. The police is now making her sketch and have spread the dragnet. They believe it is only a matter of time before they pick up the offender. In another incident, 1.5 kg gold was stolen from a jewellery store in Pot Market a few months ago. It’s said a man from Gulbarga had come with 1.5 kg of gold and was trying to negotiate with the shop for buying new jewellery when his mobile phone buzzed. As he was talking, a woman who stood nearby

Quality of CCTV

CCTV surveillance systems operate where people do business or gather for entertainment. CCTV systems are no longer considered a luxury, considering the increased level of security they provide. In the commercial sector, they can be used for safety purposes, so that members of the public can prove that an incident happened and the employees can use it to fight fraudulent claims.

In 70 per cent of cases, CCTV footage is found to be inadmissible as evidence in a Court of Law because the quality is not good. You should approach a company that will understand your individual CCTV requirements. Their experience with lens optics and camera technology will guarantee you satisfaction with your system.

managed to remove the bag and walked out of the shop. The CCTV footage gave a clear image of the woman and she was traced and arrested. “The CCTV is a sure-fire remedy against shop lifting,” said ACP, Mahankali Division, GP Vasu Seena. At least 50 cases of thefts or loot were detected in 2011 with the help of CCTVs. “It’s proving to be the most helpful and dependable source for us,” remarked S Vinod Kumar, Inspector of police. Apart from jewellery shops, the CCTV has proved to be effective in protecting ATMs. In Punjagutta an ATM was looted and the robbers were arrested. Same was the case with a Malakpet ATM robbery. Banks and ATMs in Saifabad, Banjara Hills, and OU have seen the utility of CCTV. Inspector Vinod Kumar said nearly 60 per cent jewellery shop owners now use CCTVs. One CCTV costs between `30,000 and `50,000, he said.

ussain Sagar lake and catchment areas improvement project 2006-2012 is yet to be completed. Even as the government struggles to keep the lake clean, continuing pollution from people and industries nullifies its efforts. Inflow of industrial effluents and the residue of iron scrap, plaster of Paris from the annual Ganesh immersion add to the contaminants. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy reviewed the project being funded by the Japan government through Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The project aims to restore the lake to its past glory of a fresh water body. Officials from various departments told the CM that they would be able to complete the project by only 2013 as there were several bottlenecks which would have to be dealt with in a phased manner. The Japan Government is providing `310 crore, while the State government is spending around `60 crore. Of this, `127.84 crore has been spent so far.

History: The lake was originally built by Hazrat Husain Shah Wali as a tributary to Musi during the regime of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah in 1562 to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad city. The bund that at one time connected the British and Nizam areas is today a confluence of parks, statues, temples and other structures. Rain water was the main source for the tank, but later the Balkapur Nalah and Banjara nalah were dug and diverted to fill it.

14.5km of nalahs on both sides. n Tender process was commenced for the proposed eco park opposite KIMS Hospital. The shore line work from Sanjeevaiah Park to Boat Club are under process. n The installation of seven jet fountains in the lake are completed. n Decision on dredging and disposal of hazardous sediment are pending. The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board is looking into the matter. n A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between the government and Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd for processing the sediments at Dundigal after PCB nod.

WATER FOLLIES

Apart from sewer lines, sources of pollution include cattle washing, vehicle washing, dumping of waste apart from the immersion of Ganesha idols. The lake which remained clean until 1930s, gradually was polluted with sewage and industrial effluents. Four nalahs — Picket Nalah, Kukatpally Nalah, Banjara nalah, Balkapur nalah bring pollutants.

Many recreational facilities around the lake were created to attract tourists. Lumbini Park, NTR gardens, Jala vihar, Waterfront, Sanjeeviah Park, Necklace Road surround the tank. Apart from Buddha statue on the Rock Gibraltar, 33 statues of luminaries — some of them were vandalised and/or uprooted during million march by the Telangana agitators — are also installed on the tank bund. Boating and water sports, including Regatta, are also conducted in the lake.

Narasimhan blows Kiran’s trumpet

n one of the dullest Republic Day addresses in recent years, Governor ESL Narasimhan today took refuge in Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy’s 100-day programmes and culled out schemes to give them a gloss and left it all at that. Delivering the 63rd Republic Day speech at the parade grounds, the governor lauded

the educational and employment generation schemes the State had set rolling. He said the industrial investment policy 2010-15 envisages creation of five lakh jobs per year with an investment of `15,000 crore. The State, he hoped, would be solving the vexed unemployment problem to a great extent.

The government’s ` 700 crore development for the City in the first 100 day’s action plan and ` 900 for the second 100 days would give it facelift. The governor, however, said that extremism and terrorism have been major impediments in the development of the State and they ought to be defeated. The NCC, scouts, guides and police presented a colourful pageantry and march-past.

No truck with TRS POLITICS Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com

B

JP senior leader and former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya has said that there will be no truck with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in the near future. The BJP is working in close co-ordination with the TRS on various issues. Talking to Postnoon, Dattatreya said that the BJP was geared up for the Telangana state with the slogan of one vote and two states. The rumour about BJP having truck with TRS was created by people with vested interests, he said. Stating that he was in the JAC co-ordination committee meeting for two days, he said that TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao never made any proposal for any alliance. He said that KCR suggested that all the like minded political parties, who were fighting for Telangana, must strengthen themselves to achieve Telangana. He said that the road show by BJP president G Kishan Reddy was drawing good response in Telangana and leaders cutting across party lines were joining

the roadside meetings being held by the BJP. Dattatreya exuded confidence that the BJP was strong enough to contest on its own without any alliance and if the party came to power at the Centre, Telangana would be a reality he said. There was every possibility of his party crossing the double digit figure in the next elections. The BJP decided to support the resolution for Telangana, if it was moved in the Parliament, he said. If required, a resolution could also be moved in the Assembly during the Budget session. After the Congress leaders were proved to have been involved in various scams, the BJP is all set to make a comeback at the Centre, he said.

All cases against students withdrawn T-STIR

H

ome Minister Sabita Indra Reddy has said that 657 cases filed against students during the Telangana agitation were being withdrawn as assured by the government in the Assembly. Sabita and Law Minister Erasu Pratap Reddy held a meeting with police top-brass and discussed the matter. Speaking to the media later, Sabita said some cases would be withdrawn and 133 cases were being referred for legal advice. She said that a total of 790 cases would be withdrawn by the end of this month. She also assured that GOs on the

withdrawal would be issued soon. She explained that the delay was for ensuring that there would be no legal problems, once the cases were withdrawn. She added that withdrawal of cases registered during the Sakala Janula Samme would be considered later. The Home Minister has assured that students would not have any kind of problem due to the cases while writing competitive examinations. She said that some 5,000 students would be getting relief because of the government’s decision to withdraw the cases. Delay in withdrawing cases happened because some private properties were damaged and that required sorting out.

hoppers at the Bowenpally market are a tensed lot these days. Instead of taking a leisurely stroll around the market inspecting produce and then bargaining for the freshest available like they did earlier, these days shoppers merely hand over a meticulously drawn up list to the nearest vendor and keep a close watch on their parked vehicles. The reason — if they even blink they risk having their vehicles being towed away. And this has a telling effect on business in the area. “We work hard to grow our crops and generate business but what’s the point if we do not get cus-

They come in a hurry and shop because they are worried their cars may be towed by the traffic police,” laments Mohammed Khaza, a shop owner at the market. Most of the Rythu Bazaars and General Bazaars in the twin cities face a shortage of parking space. They have huge areas allocated for shopping but less than one acre of land for parking. Few markets in the City have parking areas that are owned by private parties. Even these lots don’t have much space to

accommodate the inflow of vehicles. “On weekends more than 800 vehicles come here and the provision is only for 300 vehicles. We had paid `6.6 lakh to acquire the tender for the parking space, but I doubt if we can make any profit from this,” said Santosh C, one of the owners of the parking area. It is this lack of authorised parking lots that force car owners to park on the main road which either blocks traffic or results in challans being issued. The situation is grim in old markets like General Bazaar, Sultan Bazaar and Koti. “When I went to Koti on Sunday it was packed and there was absolutely no place to park my vehicle. There was a complex in the vicinity but the watchmen did not let park there and I had to return home disappointed,” said Bhaskar P, a B.Tech student. Citizens now prefer to shop in malls or online to avoid such hassles. This in turn has hit businesses. “Sultan Bazaar is more than a 100 years old and the government has not provided us with any park-

General Bazaar in Secunderabad which has a smart parking system can accommodate less than 100 vehicles. “What can we do? These lanes are very narrow, and commuters cannot take their vehicles inside. On weekends and festivals it gets very difficult for us to handle so many customers who do not understand and throw tantrums,” complaints Madhadev D, a GHMC parking in-charge at General Bazaar. In all, the GHMC has only 174 parking lots in Hyderabad. “I agree there is a serious need to create parking space. But, the swelling City and its topography do not allow us much options,” said an estate officer of the Corporation. But citizens working to safeguard lakes, environment and other social fields say that corruption in GHMC and the resultant loss of spare land to encroachers had landed us in this state.

DP president N Chandrababu Naidu has said that no one will be left out of the party. He said that as of now there were no differences within the family. Chandrababu clarified that all of them would work for the development of the party. Referring to some TDP leaders; crossing over to the TRS, Naidu said some of them would return and it was just a temporary phase. He was confident that the party would come to power in 2014. According to him the public is waiting for an opportunity to change the government, considering the rampant corruption and cases against Congress leaders. Both YSR and Jagan were exposed by the ongoing CBI probe. The law will take its own course and culprits will go to jail, he observed.

India‑View Congress slams Hazare over slapping ‘nod’ NEW DELHI: The Congress Wednesday hit out Anna Hazare for justifying slapping as a means of expressing anguish against corruption and said the whole country would like to be educated on “this new definition of the Gandhian path”. Reacting to Hazare's remark that an individual is left with no option when his power of tolerance of corruption runs out, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that it was not appropriate for him to say so. Thai PM chief guest NEW DELHI: Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Thursday became the third consecutive leader from South East Asia to be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day parade. Shinawatra, who took over the reins of the Thai government in August 2011 at age 44, is in India on a two-day state visit that began on Wednesday at the invitation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. This is her first visit to India as prime minister. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, a military veteran himself, and South

Korean President Lee Myungbak were chief guests at the 2011 and 2010 Republic Day parades. This is only the second time in over five decades that a woman head of state or government is the chief guest. Queen Elizabeth II was in India in 1961 as chief guest. Ban on Maya play: ‘My sandal’ gets the boot LUCKNOW: A satirical play depicting the extravagant lifestyle of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has been banned by her government. Even as play director Mukesh Kumar denied any connection with the chief minister, Lucknow District Magistrate declared the play titled My Sandal was in utter violation of the election model code of conduct and therefore its staging could not be permitted. However, the story line of the play indicates that the play depicts none other than Mayawati. Even the names

of characters are similar to those close to the chief minister. The play is about Maya, a queen who rules a country called mayanagri. She is obsessed about high quality sandals, which are bought from the Arab world. Her sycophants gift her sandals. One such precious pair is bought by her devoted nobles as gift for her birthday. But since the event is still away, the nobles Satish, Naseem and Nakul decide to keep the priceless gift in the safe and secure confines of the queen’s treasury.

However, the sandals are accidently gobbled up by Maya's favourite elephant, who necessarily feeds on jewels stacked in the treasury to which the animal has free access. The deeply worried nobles seek the good offices of the kingdom's exiled doctor, widely known for doing the impossible. They implore upon him to give the elephant some drug so that the sandals come out of the intestines together with the jewels on which it had been feeding. The doctor's medicines do the magic and the sandals slip out along

with the excreta. But the jewels are all missing. Instead what comes out are documents exposing the corrupt practices the queen has been indulging in to amass illgotten wealth, which triggers a revolt in the kingdom. Maya has been on the offensive recently, particulary targeting Rahul Gandhi and SP chief Mulayam for their ‘anti-Dalit’ stands. IANS

‘Uncompetitive’: Cameron raps Europe’s knuckles DAVOS/LONDON:

British Prime Minister David Cameron called the drive to finish the Doha round of world trade talks a failure and said on Thursday the European Union should instead negotiate free trade deals with the United States and Africa, according to a Reuters report. Cameron's comments, to be made in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, mark a break with the orthodox position of most world leaders who have for years called for a final push to conclude the complex set of global trade negotiations launched in the Qatari capital Doha in 2001. Instead of trying to get every country to agree, Cameron said the 27-nation EU should push forward with bilateral deals. He suggested a "coalition of the willing" — countries that wanted to do an ambitious trade deal — could forge ahead alone. "Last year, at this very forum, world leaders called for an allout effort to conclude the Doha round in 2011. We said it was the make-or-break year. It was. And we have to be frank about it. It didn't work," Cameron will say, according to excerpts of his

speech released in advance by his office. "But let's not give up on free trade. Let's step forward with a new and ambitious set of ideas

to take trade forwards." Cameron's speech takes a swipe at his fellow EU leaders in his first address on the continent since Britain refused to play a

role in a fiscal compact designed to shore up the eurozone. After Chancellor Angela Merkel used her address on Wednesday to say that she was not prepared to expose Germany to more flak from the markets to bail out eurozone strugglers, Cameron will urge an end to mere "tinkering". He will be joined by the prime ministers of Canada and Singapore, who like Britain both retain a gold-plated triple A credit rating — unlike eurozone states such as France and Austria, which were downgraded this month. Leaders from Africa will meanwhile debate the prospects of the world's poorest continent at a time when developed nations are in the mire and the outlook for the Arab world after last year's uprisings will be thrashed out. After Merkel said that Europe had to become more competitive, Cameron expanded on the theme. "Europe's lack of competitiveness remains its Achilles Heel. For all the talk, the Lisbon Strategy has failed to deliver the structural reforms we need," he said in reference to a European treaty inked in 2007. AFP

he fall of agriculture production due to less rainfall coupled with low market prices for produced goods has affected the revenue growth of Sri Biotech, a Hyderabad-based agri-biotech company, this financial year. This is one of the worst situations that agro-industry has faced in last 15 years. Sri Biotech, which is growing at 30 per cent to 70 per cent every year, had to limit itself with similar revenues in the previous fiscal, said KRK Reddy, chairman and managing director. Talking about the industry, he said the use of bio fertilizers and bio pesticides in agriculture is growing at 10 per cent every year. Organic farming would take 20 per cent of the total farming in the next decade. It cannot take the whole market pie due to shrinking agriculture lands for industrialisation and growing demand of production proportionate to the increase of population. However, the organic farm-

KRK Reddy, chairman and managing director ,Sri Biotech ing can be catered for rich communities. The production costs are 10-15 per cent high compared to the traditional farming methods. The cost-benefit ratio for the farmer is high and there is also a premium for the production. The organic farming is a slow process and can give benefits to farmers in a long run. Sri Biotech is investing 10 per

cent of its revenues in research and development (R&D). The company is doing transgenic research and RNA interference technology research in the labs based in Pashamylaram industrial estate in the City. It has panIndia presence with 40 per cent of its production going to seven states. It also has plans to export its products to African countries this year, he said.

There are a lot of issues with the fake biotech companies. The term biotech is thoroughly exploited by non-biotech companies. The chemical fertiliser companies are also naming themselves as biotech companies. It is difficult for the farmer to differentiate between a reputed biotech company and a fake biotech company in choosing a product. There is a need for certification to acknowledge the authentic companies and its products, added Reddy. Reaching the end-user is also a challenge for Sri Biotech. It is educating all the stakeholders down the supply chain that includes employees, dealers and farmers. The company is spending 30-40 per cent of its revenues on marketing compared to10 per cent of industry spend, he said. The turnover the company is `90 crore and the net profit is 15 per cent in the last financial year. The 1,000-employee company has 30 per cent of its shares held by India Agri Business Fund Limited, Mauritius.

ormer Isro chief Madhavan Nair has hit out against the Centre’s decision to bar him and three other top scientists from holding governments posts and accused his successor K Radhakrishnan of stage managing the whole episode. Nair said his former associate was ‘killing the organisation’ in pursuit of his personal agenda. The government action came in the wake of the controversial deal in which Isro’s commercial arm, Antrix, alloted scarce S-band spectrum to a private company, Devas, and according to the CAG estimates caused a loss of `2 lakh crore to the exchequer. An internal probe by Isro, launched after the controversy arose, cleared the decision makers of any wrongdoing. Nair has also questioned why the scientists were being targeted and administrative officials spared of scrutiny. Isro, considered the pinnacle of India’s technological prowess, has come under a cloud after the Antrix ‘expose’. The government must come clean on what was wrong with the Antrix deal, to what extent and who are responsible.

Corporal punishment: Is it really the answer? From the hip S Shoaib

T

o punish a child or not? This is neither a new question nor has it been solved. The topic has acquired centrestage again today because of the spate of reports of children going to the extent of committing suicide after being caned by their teachers. Till recently caning to discipline children was considered acceptable and the ratings of schools were based on the extent of discipline, particularly of the corporal variety, that was imposed on kids. The musical Sound of Music, which most of us have seen at least once during our formative years, convinced us thoroughly that strict discipline was not a fertile ground for developing creative instincts among children. That was probably an entertaining argument against imposing strict discipline including corporal punishment for children. The West is now fully convinced and won-over by the theory that children should be brought up in a free environment where all their inner potential can flower. So the cane has been banished from schools and from homes and a nurturing style of bringing up children has been totally accepted and followed. Child protection laws empower the keepers of the law to protect children from any kind of physical and mental abuse, even from their parents. Social structures for bringing up children away from abusive natural parents are well established; adoption laws made suitable to make children grow in happy and free environment with adoptive parents away from abusive ones. The story in the East of course is different. In countries of the East, including India, we believe in the adage, ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’. Routine caning has been thought to be part of good schooling and children, too, do not take it too seriously. In fact, boys actually wear the marks of caning on their hands and legs as proud medals to be shown gleefully to friends. After mutual exchange of their versions of the reason for the beating, the incident was forgotten. At home, too, on weekly holidays it was considered good par-

These fans are such morons to waste their time and slug it out in the streets over their matinee idols — one’s a politician and the other has revealed his intentions to take a plunge into the field. Barack Obama’s speech today is a wake-up call for India. We have been relying on outsourced work from the developed world to build our economy. Though things may look rosy now it is only a matter of time before we too, face the same situation the West is in now facing because of lack of original production. Our dependence on sub-contracts will eventually snuff out all creativity in our educated youths and reduce them to mere processing clerks. We need to do real research and development and emerge as producers and creators if we want to sustain our economic progress. Madhav K Krishnanagar

enting to smack the bottoms of children after a review of their performance in studies and manners. Many of us I am sure, while we look over our shoulders today at those years, will smile ruefully at the memories of those spankings and accept that it was those well-meaning spankings that brought us to where we are today. Those spanks and canings were like lassoes thrown over the heads of wild bulls bringing them on track. The elders, who steered us onto achievement and learning good behaviour and manners, ensured that we grew up to be good human beings and law abiding citizens. Bringing up large families gave no time to pamper and use psychological counselling to train children to negotiate life, so using physical punishment was the easier way out. It was also the accepted way and omnipresent. Nobody looked doubtfully at a parent beating a child. It was thought not fit to interfere in the sociological process of parenting. When this becomes abuse is what needs to be defined. Horrifying instances of teachers humiliating children under their care by subjecting them to physical punishment that are used on hardened criminals in police lockups have been routinely reported. have been hospitalised after such assault. There has been an extreme case where a father in a village in China tied his son to a tree in his backyard and beat his son to death after flogging him for 17 hours continuously. The neighbours reported it to the local police only after the boy had died. So much is the acceptance of beating children. We may shudder at the Chinese American author Amy Chua’s ideas of rearing children the Chinese way (read Asian) and the positive benefits of it in her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother as compared to the liberal upbringing of the children in the West that has resulted in rebellious and disturbed children of white races. Whereas stern upbringing practices prevalent in Eastern societies results in diligent, disciplined children who achieve in life (Amy’s opinion). But we will stop to think about it, even though we may not fully agree with her style. The moot point is when and how to draw a fine line between gentle guiding with a mild affectionate spank on an erring child’s bottom to indicate to him that what she or he is doing is either dangerous or not acceptable and physical or mental abuse of the child that may do irreparable damage... for life. And how, does one ensure that one does not slip into the other?

Callousness could prove costly While the police advise us to employ even maids after checking their antecedents, they are exposing us to grave risk by staying mum on whereabouts of uniformed persons. When a person or a company hires security personnel, expectations of trustworthiness are high, since heavy responsibilities are entrusted to them. The department that is expected to oversee the law and order situation should ensure that citizens are well protected. And when citizens are making their own arrangements and willing to pay for things that the police department are duty-bound to do, it is all the more reason for them to make sure of this. More is not always merrier

Heavy bags, coupled with lack of physical activity and spending hours slouched in front of the idiot box is contributing to back problems in children Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

T

hey spend hours slouching in front of the computer or television, stooped under their gigantic backpacks and hunch over their books no matter how much you reprimand them about their posture. But these habits could actually contribute to spinal problems in your child. Stress to the shoulder and back are common in such a scenario. For instance, carrying very heavy backpacks can result in poor posture and injury to the back in the future. Given the competitive education system prevalent today, most kids end up carrying heavy loads to and fro and this can take a toll on their backs. “Heavy bags apart, kids these days are gadget junkies and love spending time cooped up indoors playing on the computer, PSPs or watching TV. This cuts down on their play time and they get in very little physical activity as a result. This also contributes to poor back health,” says Dr Kiran Krishnamurti, a paediatrician. Most kids however, don’t have the same kind of back trouble like adults do. Also being more resilient, most of them get away. But the problem arises when a child is obese and

there is an added strain. “While some kids do complain of back trouble due to various factors, these can be exacerbated due to obesity. That said, some kids can carry weights better than others. But if school bags are proving to be too heavy they can be divided in two bags to distribute the weight,” says Dr N Somsekhar Reddy, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Apollo Hospital. Bad sitting and standing postures also contribute to back troubles in kids, says Dr Kiran.

“They spend a lot of time sitting in front of the TV, blackboard or computer, which is not good for the spine. A heavy bag just adds to the musculo skeletal problems and this manifests in the form of muscle spasms, neck pain, back pain etc. The human spine is not meant to be in one position for more than 20 minutes,” she explains. Introducing a locker system in schools to help lighten the burden on kids

can help, say doctors, Even dividing classes in a manner in which kids don’t have to carry all their books on the same day can go a long way in easing their burden. “It would also help if children were made to exercises meant specifically for strengthening the back,” says Dr Somasekhar. Ensuring that kids spend some time playing outdoors and inculcating a culture of participating in a sport, dance or any physical activity from an early age is also imperative for a healthier future.

Dear doc, there is a lot being written about twins, and I am undergoing infertility treatment. Is it true that I have more chances of twins? he main aim of any infertility treatment is a pregnancy thus the two important components, the woman’s ovum and man’s sperm have to be adequate and also have the opportunity to meet. For this to happen modern infertility treatments aim to do just that they give medications to the woman for increasing the number of eggs per cycle (super ovulation). There are triggers available, to stimulate ovulation and treatments to improve implantation also. So when everything falls into place pregnancies happen fast and sometimes multiple! Statistics however, say that 60 per cent TWINs are natural only 40per cent due to fertility medicines. But 80 per cent of triplets and more are due to infertility treatments. These usually occur in the high end treatments which involve injectable hormones more complicated cases which require procedures to harvest the multiple eggs and then fertilize in vitro. With multiple embryo transfer (what the lay person knows as test tube babies). Though it may seem wonderful in photographs, multiple pregnancies come with a lot of risks, both during pregnancy, like higher chances of preterm labour, premature births, diabetes and hypertension and risks to the babies also. Afterwards the cost and financial strain of bringing up multiple babies .can take its toll too! In fact, now a truly successful treatment should result in a singleton pregnancy, which is safe both for mother and child. So more is not always merrier!

AD: French scientists focus on key target PARIS: French scientists said that lack of a key brain protein was linked to Alzheimer’s, a finding that threw up a target for drugs to fight the disease. “What we’ve found is a weapon for controlling and modifying tau,” said EtienneEmile Baulieu of France’s National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), referring to a culprit involved in Alzheimer’s. Building on earlier work, researchers delved into a Paris “brain bank,” of organs donated for medical science, to compare levels of a protein called FKBP52 in brains of people who had died of dementia and those who had died of other causes. Tiny slivers were extracted and their chemicals analysed. In the frontal cortex, “levels of FKBP52 were 75 per cent lower among people who had died of AD and other tau diseases,” Baulieu said.

Baulieu said FKBP52 was the best target that had surfaced so far in the fight against Alzheimer’s, a disease that is as cruel as it is baffling. A rogue protein that later became named tau was first spotted in 1912 by Alois Alzheimer, the German neuropathologist who gave his name to this relentless degenerative disease of the brain. When normal tau undergoes a process called hyperphosphorylation, it starts to assemble in microscopic tangles inside brain cells, killing them.

But another telltale sign of Alzheimer’s is the accumulation of so-called amyloid plaques outside neurons, and their connection with tau, if any, remains unclear. Discovered in 1992, FKBP52 is a protein that is found abundantly in the brain, where it has a workhorse role in folding and unfolding other proteins. But it has also been revealed to bind to tau, which gives rise to the theory that lack of the protein helps tau to clump together. Baulieu sounded a word of caution, saying the molecular cascade of events that cause

tau tangles was still not fully clear. But levels of FKBP52 could be used as a marker of susceptibility to Alzheimer’s, and boosting them could provide a means of stalling progression of the disease. “I think that in three or four years, we will have results that are sufficiently broad and robust to be able to use candidate drugs that we will have found, or that pharmaceutical companies can use and modify,” he said. “It may go a lot faster than people say.” In 2010, Alzheimer’s Disease International, the umbrella body of national associations for the disease, estimated that the number of Alzheimer’s sufferers will mushroom from 35.6 million people worldwide to 65.7 million by 2030 and 115.4 million by 2050. The research appears in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. AFP

“A

lthough there is no data available for the incidence of asthma, according to a survey conducted in 1999 nearly 3 per cent of our population is affected by this disorder of the airway. Over the years however, the incidence of asthma has gone up by around 10 per cent. This increase can be attributed to changes in lifestyle, sedentary lifestyles, increase in pollution levels and stress,” says Dr Mohd Soheb Ansari, consultant pulmonologist at Mahavir Hospital. He goes on to add that exercising, good hygiene, identifying and avoiding triggers, decreasing stress levels, practising yoga or any aerobic exercise can help increase lung function. “The causes for asthma could be many: hereditary, allergens. It is important to identify these and then manage the condition accordingly,” says Dr Ansari. “Inhalers are the best form of treatment. There are two types of inhalers available in the market – meter dose inhalers and DPA inhalers,” he says. While inhalers are the main modality of treatment, there are also non-pharmacological treatments like acupuncture and yoga. He adds, “The best way to manage asthma however, is through regular medication. Preventive medication helps curb attacks. It is also important to follow the full course of treatment and not stop just because one is feeling better, which is what a lot of patients tend to do with any ailment.” The repercussions of skipping the full course of medication with any ailment could mean recurrence of the problem. Asthma patients should also visit their doctor once every three months for regular check-ups and follow up treatment depending how they’ve been responding to the previous therapy. “This is especially true for asthma patients whose condition is stable, for those more prone to attacks they should visit their doctor frequently. If a patient works on preventing an attack and takes regular medication there is no reason why they cannot lead a normal life just like anybody else,” explains Dr Ansari.

It is no less than a tragedy when a comedy ceases to be funny. It’s high time Americans opt for the British formula of cutting it off when a story has run its course

It’s funny no more Sana Mirza sana.m@postnoon.com

F

or almost two decades, NBC was what you saw when you wanted a good laugh. The Cosby Show, Friends and Seinfeld, were a handful of shows that converted the channel into a pop-culture behemoth. The trend has continued in recent years, thanks to The Office, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation. Also, NBC had the capability to broadcast critically acclaimed comedies and keeping them together, filling the comedy block with side-splitters that got other networks go green with envy. But most television shows like How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Simpsons and Family Guy have all been on air long enough to experi-

Reality Bites Shiba Minai

A

lthough India is one of the last countries to be bitten by the reality show bug, it seems it has really warmed up to the concept. The trend was surely a respite from the saasbahu sagas, but today, even reality shows seem to have become predictable. Looks like reality shows have taken up the

ence the tragic shark jump, which lands them into a pool of stupidity, blandness, contradiction, and stale jokes. When the shows were renewed after the Christmas break, we did miss out on huge chunks of humour that initially got us addicted to them in the first place. We aren’t 40, and so that is not the reason why things are not funny anymore? Vatsal Chintalapati, a game designer says, “Well, actually they are still funny, but if you are an old viewer, you have gotten used to that kind of humour. It used to be hilarious because of the mannerisms and the jokes. They have now gotten passé for old viewers who are now watching it for the storyline. For a new viewer it would be funny.” According to Chris Isaac, a student of media studies in Bangalore, the moment a

show becomes mainstream and has a dedicated fan-following, the writing takes a backseat. “The reason why I think they lose their humour is because after a couple of seasons, popular shows become mainstream and writers change the nature of comedy, so to speak. They lose out on the originality, which made them different from the other shows in the first place,” he says, but Vatsal begs to differ and says, “The shows are being marketed for an ever growing audience and not just for those who are fans already.” Even shows like Modern Family, which have been created by comedy geniuses like Christopher Lloyd and Stephen Levitan who gave us Frasier, seem to be losing out on their touch. Community was most recently shelved after its

second season. A lot of producers who write good shows are under the impression that they can keep the curiosity level high once the show is a hit with the audience, but they are wrong, opines Vatsal. “It was sad to see such a good show get shelved but then again the problem with shows that have brilliant scripts is that producers think they can make them run for a good 10 years like Friends, but they don’t realise that they do not have the same kind of audience and cannot drag the show for so long,” he adds. “There’s only a certain time period up to which you can keep the storyline and jokes interesting. They should stop the show after that point,”adds Chris. If this trend is to continue, comedy might not have a very long run.

STAR OF THE WEEK – JHANSI

J

hansi has recently completed 17 years on television and needless to say she's one of the most popular faces on telly. She shares with us some interesting facts about her journey so far Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com l What was your first show on TV? It was a two episode mini-serial named Vijetha. GK Mohan had directed the serial for Doordarshan. l What's your claim to fame? Talk of the Town. It ran for 10 years from 1997-2007 on Gemini TV. It was great fun to talk about movies in different avatars. l You would have criticised a lot of people in Talk of the Town. Has anyone ever told you that you should be careful? Oh, yes. It happened quite a few times, but no one confronted me personally, except for a leading producer-cum-director. The irony is that I worked in this person's films quite a few times after that incident. l People whom you loved talking to on TV? Chandrababu Naidu, Renuka Chowdary and Venkatesh. l One person whom you would love to interview? I would love to talk to someone like APJ Abdul Kalam. l Best compliment you have got so far? People tell me that I am like a family member. As a host, you can't get a better compliment. l Most embarrassing experience? Once I blurted out Nara Chandrababu Naidu's name as Nandamuri Chandrababu Naidu. And recently, at the audio launch of Dookudu, I kept saying Thaman's name so many times that when I had to call Samantha on stage, I ended up saying, 'Now, I invite Tamannaah on stage.' I sincerely apologise to both. l If you want to bring about a change on TV, what would it be? We have a responsibility to carry a strong message against misguided entertainment. If there could be a discussion on social and developmental issues in a prime-time slot, that'll be great. We need more infotainment on TV. l How's your life off-screen? I love reading books and writing my blog at times. And my daughter and my friends keep me busy when I am not on television.

Finally a real reality show! responsibility of reviving failed careers. Sometimes, I wonder, what the prerequisites for these shows read like — does it say usage of lewd language is a must and acting crass will be of added advantage? And that the ability to fight and express jealousy and anger will mean higher remuneration? Thank God! Now the audience can see through these gimmicks. One reality show that I think is the

most genuine today on Indian television is Dance India Dance on Zee TV. Conceptualised by actor Mithun Chakraborty, the show is judged and choreographed by the trio Terence Lewis, Remo D'Souza and Geeta Kapoor. The panel on this show is fair and truly believes and advocates that talent is the only way up the ladder for the contestants. There is no team rivalry and nor do they favour good

looks to add to the glamour quotient of the show. Terence, as a judge, gives detailed feedback after every performance and his impromptu dance lessons and tips are very informative. Performance is what matters utmost to these judges. What I love about him is his depth of observation and passion for dance, though I think he is quite liberal when it comes to judging his own toli.

Remo just adds to the charm of the panel. I love his expressions. Geeta, the only female choreographer on the show is popularly known as 'ma'; you can clearly see her genuine fondness for the contestants and this makes her all the more endearing. You will never be disappointed with this show as there is a constant effort to entertain and the performances only seem to be getting better with time.

Because you are what you wear

Invest in saris

Designer Paromita Bannerjee might be young but she has already impressed everyone with her designs. A Lakmé Fashion Week regular, Paromita shares her style rules

STYLE RULES

1

Dress for the occasion. The keyword is to be simple and effective. It is always better to be under-dressed rather than over-dressed.

2

Always dress your age. Nothing looks worse than a 60-year-old trying to dress up as a 21-year-old and vice versa. You would look more graceful if you accept your age and dress accordingly.

3

Don't overdo anything, be it make-up, accessories or styling. Just like over styling can kill a garment, too much make-up is artificial and can make you look caked up.

4

Be natural. If you think a certain style or garment will not suit you, do not wear it. Just because your favourite actress is wearing it, does not mean you will look good in it too. Don't copy anybody else's style. Stick to your own or create your own.

5

Wear clothes that are your size. Don't wear clothes, which are either a size bigger or smaller than yours. Also, never buy an outfit you think you can alter just because that is the last piece in stock!

6 TOP 10 FASHION MUST-HAVES =A basic plain black kurta (preferably in fabrics like khadi/ cottons; fabrics that breathe) and a white churidar = A basic white shirt =A pair of washed indigo denims =A pair of linen or cotton pyjamas in nude or natural colour = An evening clutch purse = A pair of antique silver hoops or baali = A pair of nude sandals in brown, camel or tan colour =A basic pair of black stilettoes = A bright colourful stole/dupatta or shawl; the more traditional, the better = Finally, a natural lip gloss for that dazzling smile and confidence! – AS TOLD TO TANIYA TALUKDAR

Try and understand your body shape and size and dress accordingly. Nobody is perfect and we don't have the perfect-10 figure, so don't worry. Keeping a few basic points in mind, goes a long way: For those with a heavy bust, take the attention away from it by wearing scooped necks; those who are short, try wearing smaller, delicate prints that do not over-power you and those who are on the heavier side, refrain from wearing fitted clothes.

7

Saris look good on all body types and according to me, it is the most elegant and graceful attire to carry. So, invest in a couple of basic to heavy saris; they will last forever, especially Indian hand-weaves.

8 9

Invest in good lingerie.

A good outfit is never complete without good basic footwear and a bag; so invest in some basic colours in footwear, bags and accessories. It completes the outfit.

10

Finally, follow your instinct. They always work. We women have a great sixth sense and it is always correct! So use your discretion while dressing up. They will go a long way!

The story behind the news

Haditha: A town scarred by war The Baghdad government has vowed to take legal action after an American marine was spared jail by a US military court over the massacre of 24 unarmed civilians in the Iraqi town of Haditha in 2005. Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, who led an eight-man squad whose other members have all been let off, was sentenced to 90 days confinement but will not serve the term, under a deal with prosecutors Prashant Rao

H

aditha residents and relatives of the 24 Iraqi civilians killed in 2005 in the town by US troops voiced disgust and shock over the light sentence meted out to a soldier involved in the massacre. A lawyer for the victims and the Iraqi government vowed to continue pursuing the case, while a doctor at the town's hospital insisted that residents would never forget the killings. Some residents, including one woman who lost relatives at the time and still lives on the street where much of the violence took place, were so upset by the judgment that they declined to speak to reporters. "This is an assault on the blood of Iraqis," lamented Khalid Salman, a Haditha city councillor and lawyer for the victims. "That is only a punishment for... small crimes. But killing 24 innocent people, and only receiving a punishment of three months? This is an assault on humanity." His comments came after US Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of negligent dereliction of duty — meaning he faced a maximum sentence of three months in prison. Salman insisted the sentence did not "mean the end" of his legal efforts. "There are orphans, widows and old people who are still suffering and hurting from that terrible massacre. If we find no way, we will go to the international courts," he said, without elaborating. His remarks were echoed by Ali Mussawi, spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who said the punishment was "not suitable with the crime that was committed" and that Iraq would "keep pursuing the legal channels". On Tuesday, Wuterich was demoted to the rank of private and sentenced to 90 days' confinement, but will serve no time behind bars because of a pre-trial agreement. Manslaughter charges were dropped as part of the plea deal for Wuterich, who led a group of Marines whose other members have been let off.

"People in Haditha are depressed, especially the families of the victims, the families of the innocent who were murdered for no reason," said Assem Omar alHadithi, a journalist with Al-Anbar television who grew up in the town. "We don't want to talk about forgiveness and kindness — all we want is justice," the Haditha-based reporter said. In all, 24 Iraqi civilians were killed — 19 in several houses along with five men who pulled up in a car where the marines were on patrol in Haditha on November 19, 2005. The victims included 10 women and children killed at point-blank range. Six people were killed in one house, most shot in the head, including women and children huddled in a bedroom. The other seven Marines charged in the case have been exonerated by various legal rulings, fuelling anger in Iraq, where authorities had pushed for US troops to be subject to Iraqi justice before the American pullout in December.

"No, I will never forgive them," said Awous Famih Hussein, a 45-year-old civil servant who lives on the street where much of the violence took place. "Not me, not my sons, and not my grandsons," he added, standing on the street corner where the initial roadside bomb detonated in November 2005, killing a US soldier, before the rampage took place in the town of around 80,000 people in predominantly Sunni Anbar province in west Iraq. The area now bears little physical trace of the violence, with just an occasional car passing along the quiet road. Hussein said he had long wanted to leave Haditha to rid himself of his memories of the killings, but he no longer had the money to move away. "I thought for a long time about leaving for Syria — leaving everything and taking my family," he said, noting that he was all set to go when he was awarded a place to attend the hajj, the holy Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

"When I came back from Mecca, I could not leave Iraq because I had no money, my financial situation was so bad." For a surgeon at Haditha's hospital, the verdict brought back memories of one of the victims — Aida Ahmed, a woman upon whom he had performed an appendectomy a week before the massacre. "She was still in care," said Ayad Ghazi Musleh. "So I knew that this woman was killed in her bed. I'm still so hurt over her death." For Musleh, the sentence was evidence of an unfair system, one with "different classes of blood — and the blood of Iraqis and third-world countries are the lowest and the last classification in the world." "Isn't Iraqi blood worth the same as American blood?" Asked how long the people of Haditha were likely to be affected by the killings, the 43-year-old replied, "The Arab people like history, and they remember everything." "Nobody will forget this story," he said.

FROM MY LAI TO MAHMOUDIYAH: A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE The My Lai Massacre was the Vietnam War mass murder of between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968, by US Army soldiers of ‘Charlie’ Company of 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade of the Americal Division. Most of the victims were women, children (including babies) and elderly people. Many were raped, beaten and tortured, and some of the bodies were later found to be mutilated. While 26 US soldiers were initially charged with criminal offences for their actions at M Lai, only Second Lieutenant William Calley, a platoon leader in Charlie Company, was convicted. Found guilty of killing 22 villagers, he was originally given a life sentence, but only served three-and-a-half years under house arrest.

The Mahmudiyah killings and gang-rape of a 14-yearold girl by US troops occurred on March 12, 2006, in a house to the southwest of Yusufiyah, a village to the west of the town of Al-Mahmudiyah, Iraq. Five United States Army soldiers of the 502nd Infantry Regiment were charged with the crimes: Sgt Paul E Cortez, Spc James P Barker, Pfc Jesse V Spielman, Pfc Brian L Howard and Pfc Steven D Green (whom the army discharged before the crime's discovery). Abeer Qasim Hamza (seen left at age 7), 14, was raped and murdered, after her family was murdered: Her mother, Fakhriyah Taha Muhsin, 34; father, Qasim Hamza Raheem, 45; and six-year-old sister Hadeel Qasim Hamza. Spielman and Green have been convicted and three others have pled guilty.

nupam Kher made his celluloid debut with Saaransh in which he played a 65-year-old at the age of 27! He created a sensation in the industry with this role and has kept the good work going — winning many a prestigious record, which includes a record eight Filmfare awards in consecutive years. At a time when acting was not even considered a full-time career, here was a man who attended an acting school before beginning on his chosen career. When asked how the thought of writing a book occurred to him, he said, “I am an actor not a writer; the only reason why I decided to pen down my life is, so I can share the ups and downs of my life. I believe that failure is a better teacher than success. I want everyone to learn from my book.” We ask, what has inspired him to write, and he says, “I have been writing columns for a while now, so writing was not very new to me. But the idea for this book came when my autobiographical play in 2005 was liked by many. I also had people tell me that it inspired them. So in this book I decided to talk about my philosophy of life — be you! Don’t let societal boundaries curb your personality or attitude.” We ask if it isn't easy for someone of his stature to be himself and not worry about repercussions, to which he says, “I was always this way. A lot of people don’t

know I was thrown out of my first film Saaransh by Mahesh Bhatt, and he decided to replace me with Sanjeev Kumar. I was hurt and packed my bags to go back to Simla. Just before leaving I decided to tell him how I felt about the whole episode. I remember telling him that he was a fraud himself!” He continues, "It changed things for me. Mahesh, called the production house and I was taken back on board. I don’t think success or position has anything to do with it. Just always be you, it will sooner or later, pay back!” We can’t disagree. When we ask why we don’t see him on television as often as we see his wife, he says, “I did some shows but after that I have not come across anything interesting as yet. Apart from that I am quite tied up in a lot of other things at the moment.” To which movie we will next see him in he says, “Well, I have a few movies lined up but before I get down to doing them, I want to enjoy the launch of my book and want to see how it is perceived. I want to live this period fully.” We wish him all the best with his book and hope to see this versatile actor in a lot more movies!

21 music artists come together for new Vande Mataram

A

s many as 21 top-notch music artists, including singers Sonu Niigaam, Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan and musicians like Amaan Ali and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, have lent their voice for a new rendition of India’s national song Vande Mataram. The contemporary version of Vande Mataram, released by Veecon Music and Entertainment, is composed by renowned percussionist Bickram Ghosh. “My version of Vande Mataram is introspective and philosophical. It is the national song woven into a new melody 64 years after Independence. It is not a song of uprising as was the mainstay of the original song. I’ve created a melody straight from my heart and the finest of India’s artists have executed it,” Ghosh said in a statement. Apart from Niigaam, Mahadevan and Chauhan, the new rendition has singers Shaan, Shubha Mudgal, Roop Kumar Rathod, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Kaushiki Desikan, Manoj Tiwari, Palash Sen and popular band Indian Ocean. Why can’t celebrities have fun, asks Shahid

A

We are all young people and why shouldn’t we enjoy our lives,” the 30year-old said at an event. Shahid also believes if he can’t have a guilt-free fun time, it’s a hindrance to his freedom. “There has to be a system where people can enjoy themselves without feeling guilty. Why should I feel guilty if I have worked hard all day long and then want to dance as much as I want? If I can’t do it, then I feel it takes away from my freedom,” he said. The actor has recently wrapped up shooting for Kunal Kohli’s tentatively titled Teri Maeri Kahaani. He also recently performed at the Zee Cine Awards in Macau, where he shook a leg with Ranbir Kapoor. IANS

ctor Shahid Kapoor wonders why people are more stringent about parties involving celebrities, and says like all young people even celebs like to party. Recently, a party organised in Mumbai in honour of international talk show queen Oprah Winfrey was busted by police more than once due to complaints from neighbours about loud music. In the past, several actors’ parties have been interrupted for the same reason. Shahid feels it’s not right to keep celebrities under a special scanner all the time. “Parties are for enjoyment. I don’t think that’s something, which gets represented correctly. Especially if it is an actor’s party and the music is loud, people tend to be a bit stricter, which is something I have never understood.

scar-winning composer AR Rahman rarely indulges in promotional activities. However, he agreed to shoot one for Gautham Menon’s Ek Deewana Tha. Rahman will appear in a promotional video for the film, while singing a track Kya hai mohabbat. In fact, the composer, who is known to delay Indian projects due to his global commitments, has already shot for the track. But now, Menon is unsure of how to use Rahman’s footage. “I still have to decide how to put

together the music video. We’ve filmed Rahman singing the song. I need to put it together with shots from the film,” said Menon. The filmmaker says this is the first promotional music video for a film that Rahman has ever shot for. So, one wonders what made the reclusive composer agree to face the camera. If Menon is to be believed, Rahman finds himself sharing a deep empathy with the Prateik-Amy Jackson romance in the film. “There’s an old-fashioned quality to their romance. I think Rahman identifies with that,” he said.

Leno sued over Romney crack L

eno has taken heat from a religious group after cracking that the presidential contender Romney keeps the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, as his summer home. And how he’s being sued by a religious organiser who claims that Leno libeled the entire Sikh religion with his joke. In court papers filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday and obtained by TheWrap, Dr Randeep Dhillon, who does business as Bol Punjabi All Regions Community Organisation, claims that Leno “hurt the sentiments of all Sikh people in addition to those of the plaintiff” with his joke. Dhillon further claims that Leno’s joke “clearly exposes plaintiff, other Sikhs and their religion to hatred, contempt, ridicule and dishonour because it false-

ly portrays the holiest place in the Sikh religion as a vacation resort owned by a non-Sikh.” Claiming libel, Dhillon is seeking unspecified damages, plus court costs. Since making the joke — which was a riff on Romney’s wealth — Leno has taken heat, with one group launching an online petition against Leno. The petition claims that Leno has a history of making discriminatory comments about the Sikh religion. “Previously, in 2007 he called Sikhs ‘diaper heads.’ In 2010, he remarked, falsely so, in his monologue that President Obama could not visit Sri Darbar Sahib because of requirements of wearing a turban,” the petition reads. “Clearly, Jay Leno’s racist comments need to be stopped right here.” NBC had no comment on the lawsuit.

KATE MOSS IS NEW FACE OF MANGO S

upermodel Kate Moss is the new face of Spanish high street store Mango. The 38-year-old is the latest celebrity to appear in a campaign for the store, following in the footsteps of Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Olivia Palermo. “I’m really excited to be working with Mango for S/S (spring-summer) 2012, we had a great time shooting the campaign, the team are so easy to work with and shooting with Terry is always fun,” said Moss. The ad has been shot by photographer Terry Richardson.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

fter 2011 ran her ragged, Demi Moore is looking to turn things around in 2012. The actress has sought treatment for largely unspecified health concerns, though fatigue brought on by stress is at the top of the list. “Because of the stress in her life right now, Demi has chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health,” the star’s rep told a news channel. “She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support of her family and friends.” Moore and daughter Rumer Willis attended the Cinema for Peace benefit for Sean Penn’s J/P Haitian Relief Organisation at the Montage hotel in Beverly Hills on January 14. Her usual can of Red Bull in hand, Moore was spotted chatting with pal Melanie Griffith. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, a 911 call was made last night at 10.49pm from an address that was confirmed to be Moore’s, and one person was transported to hospital at 11.21pm.

Gets Side Effects

s he turns his attention to getting pharmaceutical psycho-thriller Side Effects made, Steven Soderbergh has obviously been raiding his Rolodex, as he’s added another former collaborator to the cast. Catherine ZetaJones is now on board to play a character called Dr Eric Siebert. She’s joining fellow repeat Soderbergh performers Jude Law and Channing Tatum in a story that will see Blake Lively playing a very troubled young woman. Desperately struggling with depression and anxiety over the pending release of her husband (Tatum) from prison, Lively’s character begins swallowing lots of prescription drugs in order to help her cope. But things begin to go badly wrong, and the situation is not helped when she starts a relationship with her

doctor (Law). Effects is described as a potboiler throwback script (think Basic Instinct) written by Informant and Contagion writer Scott Z Burns. He’d been set to direct the project himself, but has had to stand aside because he’s too busy at the keyboard. Zeta-Jones, of course, worked with the director on Traffic, while Law co-starred in Contagion and Tatum has become a real regular, featuring in Haywire and Soderbergh’s next planned release, stripper drama Magic Mike. The actress will next be seen in Stephen Frears’ Lay The Favourite and musical adaptation Rock Of Ages. She’s currently busy shooting Broken City. Side Effects itself has suffered somewhat of a road bump as Variety reports that financial backers Annapurna have apparently dropped out, leaving Soderbergh looking for new cash. Given the casting, we’re sure he’ll lock some soon enough.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

CLIJSTERS OVERSHADOWED BY AZARENKA January 16 – January 29

Women’s singles Semi-finals Victoria Azarenka (BLR x3) bt Kim Clijsters (BEL x11) 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 Men’s doubles Semi-finals Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan (USA/USA x1) bt Robert Lindstedt/Horia Tecau (SWE/ROM x7) 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5)

MELBOURNE: Belarus’s Victoria Azarenka upset defending champion Kim Clijsters in three tense sets to reach her first grand slam final at the Australian Open on Thursday. Third-seeded Azarenka, 22, saw off a powerful second-set fightback by the Belgian mother-of-one to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. In Saturday’s final, she will play either Maria Sharapova or Petra Kvitova, who are in action later. Azarenka has now gone one step better than her previous grand slam best of reaching the semi-finals at last year’s Wimbledon. She has often faltered on the big stage, most noticeably at the 2010 Australian Open when she led eventual champion Serena Williams in the quarter-finals by a set and 4-0 before imploding. But she stood firm when it counted Thursday to hold off Clijsters’ revival and record the biggest win of her career. Azarenka dominated the first set and regained her composure to claim the third for a welldeserved win, collapsing on the ground in tears when a Clijsters backhand sailed wide on match point.

Olympic official steps down in Dow Chemical row LONDON: A commissioner of the sustainability watchdog for the 2012 London Olympics resigned on Wednesday in protest at the involvement of Dow Chemical, because of its links to the 1984 Bhopal disaster. Meredith Alexander said she was stepping down from her unpaid position on the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 (CSL), which monitors sustainability at the Olympics and Paralympics. “I don’t want to be party to a defence of Dow Chemicals, the company responsible for one of the worst corporate human rights violations in my generation," Alexander said in a statement. Dow is a major sponsor of both the London Games and the International Olympic Committee, and has stepped in to fund a hightech “wrap” around the stadium. “I think the responsible thing to do would be for Dow to withdraw from the wrap contract. Otherwise London 2012 is undermining its aim to be the most sustainable Games ever and showing contempt for the Bhopal victims," Alexander added. The London Olympics organisers, LOCOG, said in December that Dow’s name would not be on the wrap during the Games or on five ‘test’ panels either. India is strongly opposed to the company’s involvement with the Games. Dow is now the parent company of Union Carbide, whose pesticide plant leaked gas into Bhopal in 1984, killing tens of thousands of people in the world’s worst industrial accident. The company has said all liabilities for the disaster were resolved after Union Carbide settled with the Indian government in 1989 by paying $470 million to the Bhopal victims.

Rejuvenated Woods drums up 2012 Allan Kelly

ABU DHABI: Tiger Woods lit the fuse here on Thursday on a new golf season during which he aims to return to the forefront and possibly add to his majors haul of 14. Eschewing the United States to open his 2012 campaign in the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the 36-year-old American has been speaking with renewed hope following a nightmare year of injury and personal turmoil. If he had been hoping for a quiet and considered start to proceedings, he would have been sorely disappointed as, in keeping with a reported appearance fee in excess of $2million dollars, Woods was in the mar-

quee grouping alongside world number one Luke Donald and Irish tyro Rory McIlroy. Starting at the 10th, the American, who came into the tournament ranked 25th in the world, got off to a sound start with a birdie at 11 and almost grabbed a second at the next only to see his birdie putt slip narrowly past. McIlroy, the world number three, meanwhile got off to a storming start with birdies at 11, 12 and 13 to take the early lead in the $2.7million tournament which opens the tour’s three-week long Desert Swing also taking in Doha and Dubai. The 22-year-old Ulsterman and Donald were also kick-starting their season as were world number two

Lee Westwood, number four Martin Kaymer and Spain’s Sergio Garcia who went out together in the day’s other top grouping. Having ended 2011 in poor spirits after being laid low with a bout of dengue fever, a refreshed McIlroy was aware of how important it was to get the season off on the right footing. “I think it’s always nice to start the season off well," he said. “You’d like to go out — not so much to make a statement or any sort of intention — but just for yourself, to know that what you might have been working on in the off-season is coming together nicely and gives you a bit of momentum going into the next few events."

n India’s inexplicable and consistent batting slump continued on the third day. As usual, four wickets fell in the first session and the rest before tea. The approach lacked positiveness. n India will have to thank Virat Kohli and, to a lesser extent, Wriddhiman Saha, for at least getting to 272. They put on 114 for the sixth wicket after the early collapse. n Gautam Gambhir got off very slowly and was full of self-doubt. His negative approach and weakness against the short ball brought about his downfall. Sachin Tendulkar perished early and so did VVS Laxman to ordinary shots. n Kohli’s innings was the most significant achievement to emerge from this disastrous tour. His century was the first by an Indian in the Tests. Refreshingly, he showed the temperament, technique and application, which was needed to take on the Australians. And he wasn’t afraid to use the verbal either. n The Indian batsmen have now made the same mistakes in practically every innings. The fact they have done nothing about it underlines their attitude on the tour. Luckily Australia did not enforce the follow-on and this means the Test may at least go up to the fifth day.

KOHLI BATTLES AS INDIA CRUMBLES ADELAIDE: Rising batting star Virat Kohli led an Indian recovery against Australia on the third day of the fourth Test in Adelaide on Thursday after paceman Peter Siddle struck twice for the hosts. At tea India were 225 for six, with Kohli nearing the tourists’ first century of the series, after Siddle removed Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir in the space of 10 balls to put Australia on top at lunch. The 23-year-old, 91 not out off 182 balls, is India’s best hope of reaching the 405 runs they need to avoid the follow-on, after Australia declared their first innings on a

massive 604 for seven. Debutant Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha was bowled by Ryan Harris in the last over before tea for 35 — the only Indian wicket to fall in the middle session — ending a 114-run partnership with Kohli. Playing in his eighth Test, Kohli showed up his under-performing senior batsmen with his confident knock, pulling Michael Clarke for six and hitting seven fours. Siddle had Tendulkar and Gambhir dismissed to brilliant diving catches behind the wicket in two overs to put early pressure on the beleaguered tourist.

Day’s attendance

Spinner Nathan Lyon followed up with the wicket of misfiring VVS Laxman for 18 shortly before lunch. Tendulkar again missed out on his 100th international century when he was dismissed for 25 inside the opening hour. Siddle struck with the second ball of his fifth over, enticing an edge off Tendulkar’s bat for a diving Ricky Ponting to scoop it up low down at second slip. Gambhir was out in Siddle’s next over when he was unable to keep down a lifting delivery and was caught off the shoulder of his bat by a diving Mike Hussey at

gully for 34. The wholehearted Siddle had captured two huge wickets in 10 balls to seize the initiative for Australia. It was the third time in the series Siddle claimed Tendulkar’s wicket and at tea had taken 3-41 off 11 overs. Laxman’s miserable series continued when he edged a bouncier Lyon delivery into the gloves of Brad Haddin. In seven innings in the series Laxman has scored just 120 runs at 17.14. The Indians are facing a 4-0 series wipeout in the final Test after heavy losses in the opening three Tests.

BARCELONA: Barcelona survived a late comeback from holders Real Madrid to knock them out of the Spanish Cup with a 4-3 victory on aggregate after a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp where the visitors put up a spirited fightback to come from two goals down. Jose Mourinho may still not have won away to Barcelona in nine attempts as a coach, whether at Real or any of his other clubs, but his team’s performance was a perfect answer to the critics who have blasted their recent poor displays against their arch rivals. First-half goals by Pedro and Dani Alves looked to have put the game beyond the reach of Real before they fought back to level on the night with goals by

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, but in the end came up short and had defender Sergi Ramos sent-off late on. “The players worked hard and I would like to congratulate them for their performance,” said Barca coach Pep Guardiola. “Madrid are a great team and for that reason our victory has more merit. Madrid played well but over the 180 minutes we were the deserved winners. “I wouldn’t say that this was our toughest game. I remember the match in my first season away to Sevilla when we were 3-0 up and they pulled it back to 3-2 and if we drew we would lose the league. “Madrid are a very strong side but I wouldn’t necessarily say this team is stronger than the one we faced last season for example in the Champions

Gabon, Morocco in Frantic Friday Nick Reeves

LIBREVILLE: Gabon and Morocco have identified Friday’s Group C meeting here as crucial to their respective Africa Cup of Nations fortunes — but for vastly different reasons. For Gabon, victory against the 1976 winners will guarantee the cohosts a place in the quarter-finals after their opening 2-0 win over Niger. For Morocco, who lost to Tunisia in their opener, defeat will mean they are checking out of their waterfront hotel early, an embarrassing fate after failing to qualify for 2010. The north Africans were in defiant mood at training on Wednesday, despite missing five of the squad including Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh to various assorted illnesses and injuries. Morocco’s opponents Gabon meanwhile galloped to a rousing 2-0 win against debutants Niger to send this small central West African nation into ecstasy, and Gernot Rohr’s men will prove hard to stop.

League (semi-finals which Barca won).” Mourinho had little to say after the game but was disappointed by his side’s poor finishing. “There wasn’t very much to talk to the players about at half time because there was little to change. When the team plays well then you have nothing to say, and I could have spoken for just one minute,” said Mourinho, who it has been reported in the media has indicated he wants to leave at the end of the season. “We played well in the first half. Barcelona scored without having done anything and we had four or five chances. “After the break we tried to vary things by pushing Cristiano further forward and putting Benzema and (Jose) Callejon deeper.”

Craig Bellamy (right, #39) came back to haunt his former club Manchester City as Liverpool booked their first Wembley appearance for 16 years after a dramatic 2-2 draw with the Premier League leaders in the semi-final second leg of the League Cup. Leading 1-0 from the first leg, Liverpool were undone by Nigel De Jong’s spectacular 31st minute long-range finish before skipper Steven Gerrard restored their aggregate lead with a controverial 41st minute penalty. But City striker Edin Dzeko made it 2-2 on aggregate after scoring from close range midway through the second half before

Bellamy’s well executed 74th minute finish sealed a breathtaking tie in Liverpool’s favour, the Mereyside club advancing 3-2 on aggregate. “It was a fantastic performance, we were deserved qualifiers,” said Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish.
