T
riple riding is a big no no in the City. How many know this? Scooting their way with children on the fuel ranks of motorcycles or floorboards of scooters are the ‘callous parents’ who risk their safety. Taking a leaf out of their British counterparts, the City traffic police have banned carrying children on the fuel tanks of two wheelers. The UK police prosecuted and sentenced a person to five years in prison for riding a bike with a child on the fuel tank. Now the City police are sharpening the saw too. A motorcycle is usually meant for two. No footrest is also provided for one more person to travel. The very make of the bikes and scooters evidences the proviso of law. Yet, most people violate the rule and get away with it. Though the punishment in India may not be as severe, the police warned that they would drag the offenders to court, exactly the way they are deal-
ing with drunken driving cases. Once a case goes to the court, it’s for the judicial officer to decide the quantum of punishment. The Motor Vehicle Act, though doesn’t clarify on children being carried on the fuel tanks of motorcycles or the floorboards of scooters, clearly states that in case of double riding, the driver should be in the front. This makes placing a child in front of the driver contradictory to the provision of MV Act and punishable. The
COVER STORY pillion rider should be on the back seat and not in front of the driver. “Even before the start of this academic year, we conducted a programme where we asked parents not to carry three or four children on their two wheelers. The sole purpose of organising the event was to create awareness among the parents who give a damn about rules,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) C V Anand. “Hyderabadis follow their
own rules. When the rest of the world follows the helmet rule (even pillion rider should wear a helmet) only Hyderabadis have a problem adhering to this rule. As the penalty for triple riding was a niggardly Rs 100, violators used to grease the palms of some vulnerable policemen and get away with it,” he said. Anand goes on to elaborate, “There are many instances where people carrying children (who usually sit on the fuel tank), lost control over their vehicles resulting in accidents. I asked our officers to book such errant drivers. However, they are too stubborn to mend their ways.” But the traffic cops are beginning to crack the whip on offenders. “The recent special drive on drunken driving yielded positive results. Drunken drivers were taken to the court and their licenses suspended. The number of such cases is coming down, as civilians now fear the law. We are also planning to drag such careless fathers to court who neglect the safety of their children,” he added.

The home guards, Srinivas Naik, 35 who earlier served at Jubilee Hills police station and A Ram Babu, a native of Warangal along with 824 other home guards were ousted one year ago. The State government had promised to reinstate them after a home guard, N Srinivas Naik, who was attached to Asif Nagar police station climbed a radio tower in front of the Secretariat on September 29.
Even DGP V Dinesh Reddy, during a press conference had promised that the department would take those who are eligible. However, Home Guard Association State general secretary V Rajendar Reddy said, “We have worked for 15 years and then they asked us for appointment letters and realised that a GO had not been passed. It is the IPS and other officials who are at fault. Yet action was taken only on home guards and not the officials responsible. After the
mandant to take us back into the department, they issued call letters recently. However, the lower lever officials, we think bore a grudge against us since they called us for a test which included running, high jump and other activities. What’s worse is that the tests were conducted just after three days the call letters were issued, leaving us no time to prepare.” “As many as 824 home guards are jobless. Vexed with financial problems four home guards have committed suicide so far. How many more have to die?” he asked. “The duo climbed tower around 7 am and demanded that they be reinstated along with others. Talks are on and we are trying to get them down,” said the Abids police.

Celebrities not important for 10K run Postnoon News
HYDERABAD: “Chief guests and celebrities are not important any more. This run was made for the people of Hyderabad. Each and every one who comes here is a celebrity. Let Hyderabadis participate and enjoy. This is a run for the people and by the people,” said Suresh Babu, chairman, 10k Run Foundation, on Wednesday. The State Bank of Hyderabad 10K run took the pace by its record number of registrations. The run will be held on Nov 27 from 6.30 am. The numbers crossed 28,000, compared to 18,000 last year. This pushed organisers to close the counter for online registrations. However, spot registrations are open at the Expo at People’s Plaza. Participants can register between 10 am and 7 pm today.

as your tenant turned hostile and refused to vacate the premises that you let out? No worries. Rent Control Act protecting the interest of the owners and also the tenant is now in the offing. The Municipal Administration department is gearing up to introduce the Rent Control Act 2011 in the winter session of the Assembly. Sources say that there are several civil cases running for years in courts of law. The new Act will put all hardships to rest. Once it comes into force, tenants will no longer threaten their owners nor can the owners arm-twist the tenants. It becomes mandatory for the owner to give at least threemonth notice to the tenant to vacate the premises and the tenant must give at least twomonth notice to the owner, if he wants to vacate. In case the owner is located outside the town/city where the property is located and wants to come to return, the tenant must adhere to the notice served by the owner. But if the owner has two to three properties, he may not be in a position exercise the option of getting one tenant vacated. The tenant will get the opportunity of having more time as the owner already has alternative houses there. Even if there was no agree-
ment between them, the owner and the tenant must follow the guidelines mentioned in the
Act. There are cases where some tenants send paltry rents through courts causing trouble

he Bill will be introduced and the law finally enacted, two years after the promised deadline. The AP Rent Control Act is modelled on the Rent Control Act 1992 drafted by the government of India. Enactment of a piece of legislation on rent control is one of the seven mandatory reforms under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission which the state promised to bring in by March 2008 as per a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Centre. With the Centre threatening to withhold funds for JNNURM

owners. This may not happen any further. At the same time the owners also cannot hike the rents as per their whims, overburdening the tenants. This Act has been pending with the Government for several years, and the owners have been constrained to visit the courts from time to time to get the houses vacated. But now the courts will take the new act into consideration. The bill could not be introduced in the last session itself, but it did not happen. The rents will also be graded according to the facilities, location and areas. The outskirts of Hyderabad will have lesser rents, while the central and posh localities will have higher rents. This classification will also be specified in the act.

O
n May 6, locals of Rallagudem of Shamshabad, found a dead body and alerted the police. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport police spotted it, registered a case and sent it to the Osmania hospital for an autopsy. Later, it was identified as one Palki Pal, whose kins had lodged a missing complaint. They were convinced that the body was that of Palki. The police sent them to the hospital. But the mortuary in-charge and Forensic Professor Dr P Harikrishna told them that they had performed a post mortem on the body and had given it to Satya Harishchandra Foundation for disposal. When the family contacted the management of the foundation, they said they hadn’t received any body matching the description. They again went to the mortuary and demanded the body.
To their surprise the mortuary officials showed them a highly decomposed body which had a beard. The post mortem report clearly stated that the deceased’s face was clean-shaven at the time it was brought to the mortuary. Palki Pal’s family members then staged a dharna in front of the Osmania mortuary and approached the State Human Rights Commission. The commission then directed CID to take up the case. Almost 10-15 unidentified dead bodies come to Osmania and Gandhi hospitals’ mortuaries everyday. The government order issued by the State government on donation of bodies for medical purposes doesn’t specify as to how many bodies can be sold to each medical institution. The Harishchandra Foundation is sure that there is a big mafia network that is working in trading of dead bodies in the City. “It’s a big mafia which is
doing illegal trade of cadavers. The hospital staff also sell some bodies to medical institutions illegally. Later, if the same institution approach them seeking for more corpses, more are made available. The illegal sale is made possible as the mortuary staff overload the cold storage boxes and as a result the fuse goes off and the

bodies decompose. When a fresh body arrives, they keep the body for two days and sell it to a party. And if the family members of the sold dead body approach them asking to return the body, then they show a highly decomposed dead body (which can’t be
identified) saying that the freezer in which the body was stored is not functioning and hence it got putrefied,” said K Rajeswar Rao, founder of Satya Harischandra Foundation. “Another way of selling the cadavers is that they save some dead bodies for almost four months together and let them rot. Later, they will send us some mass packed in a bag and claim that it’s a body. In fact the bag contains only some body parts of a decomposed body or parts of a body and the rest of the parts would be packed into another bag and send to us stating that it’s another body,” he added. The actual procedure is that if an unidentified body is sent to a mortuary then a post mortem should be conducted and preserved in cold storage. If no one turns up to claim the corpse even after 72 hours then the police should be intimated and through the GHMC it should be disposed. “Though city police com-
missioner and the Hyderabad collector have instructed the police officials and the mortuary staff to co-operate with them in giving accurate details if the dead bodies like crime number, place of birth or identification marks and allowing them to take photographs. Procedure is not followed. The police also collude with the Osmania mortuary officials,” said a member of Satya Harischandra Foundation. The demand for fresh and young dead bodies is increasing since sale of dead bodies is banned throughout the world. The second reason for the increase in demand is because of the fact that medical institutions which collect huge donation fees for a medical seat have enough money at their disposal to buy bodies illegally and give them to their students for dissection, Satya Harishchandra foundation members alleged. ‘Hang Kasab’ MUMBAI: Hanging 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab may be sooner said than done. While some from the Mumbai's lawyer fraternity said a fair process is vital, others feel that death sentence cases such as these should be speeded up. "I feel a high profile terrorism case such as this should be fast-tracked, not only in the special court or the high court but also in the Supreme Court," said Mahesh Vaswani, a Bombay High Court lawyer. "A special department at the president's office can take care of the mercy petitions in the same manner," he added. Anil Singh, chairperson of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, agreed and said any further delay in the case is pointless. Vaswani, however, also said that a lifetime imprisonment will be a befitting punishment for Kasab.

India to Pak: Punish 26/11 guilty NEW DELHI: On the third anniversary of the 26/11 attack, India on Saturday reminded Pakistan it was still awaiting “decisive” action against perpetrators of the crime, and said evidence provided by it was sufficient to prosecute those behind the “inhuman act”. External affairs minister SM Krishna also said that the use of terrorism as an instrument of state policy has no place in today’s world and is self-destructive. “We are still waiting for Pakistan to act decisively to bring to justice the perpetrators of the mindless violence that was unleashed on Mumbai. We are still waiting,” Krishna told reporters here. He said the evidence given by the home ministry to Pakistan in the Mumbai terror attack case was sufficient for “any normal court” to prosecute the accused. “I think the evidence provided by the ministry of home affairs would be sufficient for any normal civilian court to prosecute the people involved in the conspiracy and the perpetrators of this crime,” Krishna said. “I once again call on our neighbour to bring the perpetrators of the crime to speedy justice,” he said. Pointing out that no cause can justify terror as a means to achieve goals, Krishna said the fight against the scourge “cannot be selective”. “The scourge of terrorism has to be comprehensively fought and eradicated in all its forms and man-
ifestations,” he said. “It must be realised that use of terrorism as an instrument of state policy, has no place in today’s world and is self destructive,” Krishna said. He said issues have to be resolved through peaceful dialogue and in an atmosphere free from terror and violence. Asked about the visit of Pakistan Judicial Commission to India to interview key persons connected with the 26/11 terror attack probe, Krishna said the two countries were working on its modalities. “It has been agreed in principle. Let is wait for the dates,” he said. Krishna said India was committed to having a peaceful, friendly and cooperative relationship with all its neighbours for progress and prosperity in the region. “We call upon all our neighbours to join us in this endeavour of building a better future for our peoples,” he said. Krishna also paid homage to the victims and martyrs of the terror attacks in Mumbai. “I join my countrymen in paying respectful homage to the innocent men, women and children whose lives were most tragically snuffed out by the inhuman act of terrorism, inspired and carried out from across our borders, three year ago, on this day, in Mumbai,” he said. “We also salute the courage and fortitude of the families who lost their loved ones in that senseless PTI act of violence,” he said.
India remembers victims, martyrs MUMBAI: India paid homage to the victims and martyrs of the 26/11 terror attacks on its third anniversary here on Saturday. Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan laid a wreath at the 26/11 memorial at the Police Gymkhana on Marine Drive in south Mumbai. He was followed by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, state Home Minister RR Patil, top police and civil officials. Later, the family members of many of the policemen who were martyred while battling the terrorists, also laid wreaths at the memorial. Thousands of commuters on the Central Railway paused briefly at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), one of the sites
targeted by 10 Pakistani terrorists in 2008. Some kept flowers in memory of the commuters killed by the terrorists, who sneaked into the city unhindered through the Arabian Sea and created mayhem in the city. Similar homage functions were held at the Hotel Taj Mahal, Hotel Trident, Nariman House, Cama Hospital and at Chowpatty — the last being the venue where brave policeman Tukaram Ombale managed to catch one of the terrorists — Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab — alive. Ombale was killed in the process. The terror attacks left 166 dead, including several security personnel and foreigners besides IANS over 300 people injured.

Theatre owners in the State had on Wednesday decided not to screen the controversial movie. The opponents of the movie contend that it is based on the Mullaperiyar dam and the release of the movie will create panic and promote animosity between the people. One wonders what happens to the artistic freedom as well as the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Indian According to the estimates of Reporters Without Borders, India ranks 122nd worldwide in press freedom index. According to this amendment, public order signifies "that state of tranquillity which prevails among the members of political society as a result of internal regulations enforced by the government which they have established.” Now, who has the time to lose their tranquillity over some movie? the large populace enslaved is still popular, albeit in different forms and for different purposes. Authors, artists, filmmakers, social activists face the ire of those with vested interests who wants to retain their stranglehold over their traditional support bases by any means possible — even through populist measures that proclaim dearth of grey matter. The disgrace and embarrassment of a great artist such as MF Husain breathing his last in exile hasn't taught us anything. Groups who are in power and those who aspire for it always tend to discover causes that need their intervention. For this, a pressing problem has to be created for the “knight in shining armour” to enter the scene riding on the popularity stallion to slay the evil opponents. Today one can't throw a stone in this country without hitting a civil society activist (and it's likely that the same stone will rebound and hit a human rights activist). From the anti-graft icon who wants to flog tipplers to the Delhi top cop who blamed the rape victims' dress for their situation, every T, D and H has their share of opinions. War games spotlight China-Pakistan hype
Paratroopers JHELUM: hurtling head first out of planes, attack helicopters strafing a terror training centre and shacks blown to bits were this week’s latest embodiment of China-Pakistan friendship. The war games conducted by 540 Chinese and Pakistani soldiers running around scrubland — the fourth joint exercises since 2006 — were ostensibly a chance for China to benefit from Pakistan’s counter-terrorism experience. There was disappointment that fighter jets were unable to carry out a bombing raid, with poor visibility, but the exercises were declared a success in terms of improving military cooperation. But behind the pomp rolled out for the Chinese, complete with slap-up marquee lunch and bags of presents, the relationship is as transactional as any other, as China competes with Pakistan’s arch-rival India for Asian dominance. And it is far from easy to decipher. “They operate silently so as not to make any state-
ments in public apart from cliches. So one doesn’t know what’s happening,” said retired Pakistani general Talat Masood. China is Pakistan’s main arms supplier, while Beijing has built two nuclear power plants in Pakistan and is contracted to construct two more reactors. But the alliance has been knocked by Chinese accusations that the separatist East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which wants an independent homeland for Xinjiang’s Muslim Uighurs, is training “terrorists” in Pakistani camps. Those accusations mirror long-standing concerns from the US that Taliban and AlQaeda bases are funnelling recruits to fight in Afghanistan and hatch terror plots against the West. During the exercises outside Jhelum, 85 kms southeast of Islamabad, generals watched troops attack, clear and destroy a mocked-up training camp. Chinese deputy chief of staff
Hou Shusen and Pakistan’s army chief Ashfaq Kayani sat together in the front row, guests of honour incapable of talking to each other without the help of an interpreter. “We have done our utmost to eliminate this threat of ETIM and other extremists for China because we consider honestly that China’s security is very dear to Pakistan,” Kayani told a news conference after the war games. He said that Pakistan had provided intelligence during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and reiterated demands for closer military cooperation and larger imports of military hardware from China. Beijing was instrumental in getting the United Nations and United States to blacklist ETIM as a terrorist organisation in 2002, but experts have questioned how much of a threat such a small group really poses. Pakistani analysts believe members number no more than hundreds and are dispersed in the remote moun-
tains on the Pak-China border. Despite that issue, if the language used to describe Pakistan’s febrile relationship with the US is that of an unhappy couple wishing but unable to divorce, then the hyperbole used to describe China is that of an ecstatic lover. “Higher than mountains” and “sweeter than honey” were phrases used by PM Yousuf Raza Gilani when Chinese Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu came to town in September, at a time when relations with the US were at their most difficult in years. The top US military officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, had just accused Pakistan of colluding with Afghan militants in besieging the US embassy in Kabul as ties plummeted further after the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. But independent China analyst Michael Dillon says that without any real ideological links, China’s relationship with Pakistan is primarily strategic, designed to offset its rivalry with India.
NATO air strike on Pak kills 8, say officials PESHAWAR: NATO helicopters from Afghanistan carried out an “unprovoked” attack on a Pakistani border post, killing at least eight troops Saturday, the military said. “ISAF/NATO helicopters carried out unprovoked and indiscriminate firing on a Pakistani checkpost in Mohmand agency last night.
Casualties have been reported. However, details are coming,” a military spokesman said. Security officials in the Mohmand tribal region near the Afghan border and a military official in Peshawar said eight troops including a major were killed in the pre-dawn incident. They said the attack took
place on the Sala checkpost in the Baizai district of the rugged tribal terrain. “The firing left seven soldiers and one major dead,” a local intelligence official said. A paramilitary and another security official confirmed the casualties. In Kabul a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said,
“We are aware that an incident did take place. We are still in the process of gathering information.” Washington considers the tribal belt a hotbed of AlQaeda, where Taliban and other militants plot attacks on American troops — including those in the US-led international force based in Afghanistan.

Britain halts data sharing with Russia LONDON: Britain will stop sharing military information with Russia over Moscow’s decision to freeze compliance with the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), a minister said Friday. The treaty imposes ceilings on the build-up of troops from the Atlantic to the Urals. “For as long as the Russian Federation fails to fulfill its obligations towards the UK under the CFE Treaty, we will cease fulfillment of our key obligations,” Europe minister David Lidington said. The original CFE Treaty was signed in 1990 by 16 NATO countries and six Warsaw Pact members and came into force in 1992. The treaty set ceilings on five key categories of conventional armaments, including tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery and warplanes.
Ancient Chinese tomb unearthed BEIJING: A tomb dating back to 475-221 BC has been unearthed in northeast China. It lies about five meters underground and covers an area of 72 sq meters in Dongdazhangzi village of Liaoning province. The tomb dates back to the Warring States era, said Guo Dashun of the Liaoning Institute of Archaeology as saying. It is the largest tomb from the period ever excavated north of the Great Wall, making it of great academic value, said Guo. It is extremely rare to find such a large number of tombs in that region. The discovery is expected to break the traditional views on ancient civilisations in northeast China.

Wanna deliver gigabit magic to million customers Brijesh Chandwani, Managing Director, Beam Telecom Pvt Ltd gets candid in an interview with A Saye Sekhar of Postnoon
Little about yourself, your hobbies, the idea of Beam, from cable to internet business… I began my forays into business when I was in class VIII. I sold Goodlife biscuits and Royal toothbrushes in my schooldays. While I was doing my engineering in CBIT, I started a cable TV company. By the time I completed my graduation, I had 300 connections. When most of my peers went to US, I stayed back. I am a civil engineer so I had a brush with a job for a while. I realised that there was no building estimation software and dreamt of making it, but half way through I realised that it was not my cup of tea. So, I finally decided to stay in cable TV area. I began hardware distribution of cable TV equipment, distribution of satellite channels, and Sony Discovery package. As a value addition to the 1,300 cable TV subscribers, we wanted to add broadband services. It took two years to get 30 connections. Broadband was started as a value-added service (VAS) to cable. The intention was that we could get 300-400 customers. We took an office LAN and extended it on the roads. There was no technology and bandwidth from the service provider. It was very painful to run it and I thought of selling it off. Since nobody bought, I decided to turn it around. In
n
2003, we introduced optical fibre into the network which gave stability. In 2009 May, India Value Fund, through one of its arms, ACT TV (Atria Convergence Technologies) TV, made strategic investment in our company. By then in terms of capabilities, we developed Fibre to the Building (FTTB) solution. We created a good team of people. The organisation structure was in place. With the infusion of money and management support from ACT TV, we have seen almost six-fold growth in the last two and a half years. What’s the maximum bandwidth that you offer on Beam? Whom do you source the bandwidth from? Maximum bandwidth we offer is 30 MBPS and the lowest is 512 kbps. Multiple telcos are our partners in this from where we source the bandwidth.
Fi hotspots across all the key locations in the city and offer Wi-Fi services to our customers across the city at homes. Beam is fist to develop FTTB, FTTH, triple-play services (cable TV, internet, telephone and data services and WiFi within the house and campus) in green field areas on the same fibre. We are the first to provide plug and play solutions for home and small offices. We are the first to provide 10mbps, full duplex BB services at Rs. 1,000 a month as a resi-
n
From Ethernet network, where do you foresee Beam moving on? Wireless? How many connections are there in the city? We have 1,70,000 connections in the city now. Currently, we are on FTTB technological solution in the brown field areas. In the green field, we are going Fibre to the Home (FTTH). Our key focus is to take fibre to home even in the brown field areas. From the building, it is copper. Even in brown field areas, we will be FTTH. The backbone we put in place is capable of 100 Mbps a home and that would be optimised in the future. We will be replacing the FTTB to FTTH and building a one giga bit pipeline. Future-proofing and the bandwidth needs of the customer are our mantra. We are going to build Wi
n
dential package. We are the first to provide 30 mbps SLA-based BB services for small office, home office and SME segment. We are the first in the country to offer filtered internet for children. We are going to offer ‘Beam Walt’ where online storage services will be provided to Beam subscribers where they could take an automated backup of their computers and PCs on the cloud. It is enterprise class solution. We want to offer internet radio, ‘Beam Radyo’. Plug n play service delivered through with internet radio device on which the customers could access more than 10,000 internet radio channels. Beam wants to provide service beyond broadband looking at the customers needs all the time.
What are the expansion plans of your company, in terms of other cities and other parts of the State and the country? We are seriously looking at expansion into metros like Delhi and Mumbai, and emerging cities like Surat, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Baroda and parts of Andhra Pradesh over the next 18 to 24 months. We are a profit-making company and backed by a PE player. So funding is not a problem for us.
n
What is the current headcount? How many customers – domestic, retail and institutional – together do you service (number of connections)? We now have little over 1,000 people. Among the institutional and SME and enterprise customers, we gave 1,000 connections. We are growing at five to six per cent.
n
n
Does Beam want to stay only in the internet broadband business or expand to regular telecom – basic and cellular
phones? Do you have any plans to enter wireless broadband? We have chosen FTTH as one of the main pillars of technology to service the large broadband means of consumers. The broadband needs of the country could not be serviced by one single medium. The future is FTTH and wireless in the air. What is your success mantra amid the cut-throat competition from very large players? One is the choice of technology. That gave us the edge and flexibility of delivering very high bandwidth at the click of button. Delivering the future needs of the customer today at an affordable price is our success mantra.
n
What are your long-term plans for the company? Are you considering offering IPTV services? The vision is to create and deliver the magic of giga bit to a million customers by 2014. IPTV, Video on Demand, gaming, online education, Hi definition video conferencing services, IP surveillance, are some of the items in our value added roadmap.

A critical look at games and players
11
The disappointment of Tendulkar falling short of a milestone was overcome, what with India eying a whitewash in the Test series MUMBAI: West Indies were all out for 134 in their second innings on the fifth day of the third cricket Test against India here today (Saturday). India needs 243 runs to win the Test. Pragyan Ojha took six wickets and Ravichandran Ashwin four to bring India right back into reckoning with decisive spells in the first session on the last day of the concluding Test. A
mixture of assistance from the pitch to spinners and poor shot selection of the West Indies batsmen left India with 64 overs to chase down the 243 needed to complete a clean sweep of the three-Test series. The pitch at the Wankhede stadium that drew a lot of flak for behaving flat, redeemed its name of being a true wicket.

omas Berdych ensured world number one Novak Djokovic's stellar season was brought to an end on Friday with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over David Ferrer at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. A weary Djokovic lost 3-6, 63, 6-3 to fellow Serb Janko Tipsarevic earlier in the day to leave himself needing a favour from Ferrer to reach the semi-finals. Bizarrely, the fact the world number one lost actually appeared to have given him a better chance as it meant Ferrer, who had already qualified, had to win to top the group and avoid title favourite Roger Federer in the last four. That looked exactly how things would turn out as the inform Spaniard took the first set and twice led by a break in the
second. But he could not finish off the job and Berdych found his best form when he needed it most to book a semi-final clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Saturday evening, while Ferrer must hope for a first win in 12 matches against Federer. Berdych said, "The feeling is great. It was in my hands and finally I did it after another long one. Maybe I like to be on the court as long as possible." The key moment of the first
set arrived in the eighth game when Berdych gave his serve away rather tamely, blazing a forehand wide on break point. The Czech was going for too much from the back in an effort to out-hit the Spaniard, one of the best movers on tour, and he now faced a major battle to make the last four. Ferrer had not done anything special in the first set but he upped the level at the start of the second and a perfectly placed backhand gave him the break to lead 2-1. Berdych found some inspiration to break back, a lovely backhand drop volley too good even for the scampering Ferrer to pick up. However, it was not long before the world number five was threatening again, and it was another present that gave him the break in the seventh
game, Berdych firing a routine forehand long. But back came the Czech again, making Ferrer pay for failing to close out the game from 40-15, and at last he was stringing some good points together. He would have had a set point had a forehand crept over the net rather than bounced back his side, but when Ferrer served to stay in the set for the second time he cracked, throwing in an uncharacteristic backhand error. Berdych had hit a rare strain of form, his powerful groundstrokes all finding their mark, and he reeled off 10 straight points at the start of the decider — a change of shirt to shocking pink doing nothing to help his opponent. Paes-Bhupathi beat Bryan twins, enter semis at Tour finals LONDON: India’s Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have entered the semifinals of the Barclays ATP World Tour finals doubles, defeating top seeds and three-time winners the Bryan twins, Bob and Mike, 6-4, 6-2. Had the Bryans — who had already qualified after winning the first two round-robin matches — beat Paes and Bhupathi in straight sets, then seventh seeds Austrian Jurgen Melzer and his German partner Philipp Petzschner would have qualified for the semifinals. The Indians will face Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the semifinals on Saturday. In the other semifinal, the Bryan brothers play Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Canadian Daniel Nestor, who topped Group B beating among others India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, who have played in the Tour finals for the first time. hat was considered a taboo a few years ago, is something that is commonly and more openly prevalent in society today. Cougar relationships are relationships where older women get involved with younger men. Be it Indian celebrity couples like Amrita Singh-Saif Ali Khan, Farah Khan-Shirish Kunder, or Sachin Tendulkar-Anjali or Hollywood celeb couples like Demi Moore-Ashton Kutcher, Mariah Carrey-Nick Cannon, Kris Humphries-Kim Kardashian. Pop star Madonna who seems to always like them young had daughter Lourdes with 24-yea-old Jesus. Later, she married director Guy Ritchie who was 10 years younger to her. After the couple divorced, she had a fling with Alex Rodriguez and is currently dating 24-year-old French break dancer, Brahim Zaibat. Exploring complexities
The Cougar’s Cubs Cougar relationships have been prevalent in our society for a long time but do they last?
Farah Khan and Sirish Kunder when they are unable to give quality time to each other resulting in incorrigible differences. This is when they turn to men who will give them the required attention. Men who are younger go out of their way to impress the woman in question and in return women like to be pampered and cared for as well. Younger men have a stronger sex drive as compared to older men. Sex makes a woman feel wanted and gives her low self-esteem the much needed boost it requires,” says Dr Nisha going on to add, “While women look for emotional support, men are more attracted to the physical attributes.” The 2009 hit film, Wake up Sid, made audiences throng theatres to watch Ranbir's character romance the much older Konkona Sen Sharma. As much as it is a common phenomenon, alot depends on the kind of relationship one is seeking says TV actress Achint Kaur who speaks out of experience. “There is no bench rule to it. It completely depends on the way the person has been brought up. Some men like older women because they find it
easier to connect with them or they might even have a motherly fetish. For any relationship, age is never a factor,” she says. Sunil Dutt and Nargis’ relationship was a true example of long-term commitment. So do such relationships last long in today's times? “See, it’s as simple as you make it to be. It's all about the commitment. Some work, some don't work. Women age faster physically as compared to men, so his interest in the woman may go down. In such situations, its always best to be clear about what you seek, what you want and what you get,” says Achint. Actress Courteney Cox who split with husband David Arquette, seven years younger to her, is a popular cougar on TV with her series Cougar Town. She recently admitted that she wants to become a real-life cougar and date younger guys. “It depends on your definition of cougar. I was married for all of those years to a man seven years younger than me so obviously I'm attracted to younger men,” a website quoted the star as saying. Fashion designer Aki Narula says that men these days like their women to be strong and independent. “Well, we still like to pamper our ladies but it’s always nice to have a strong, independent, experienced women. It's true that men are first attracted to a woman physically before they are attracted to them on an emotional level. But what really turns a man on is intelligence. A women necessarily doesn't have to be older but surely she should be mature,” he says with a smile. Courteney Cox

2012 Jaguar XF Sportbrake first spy photos
T
hese are the first spy shots available of the 2012 Jaguar XF Sportbrake, caught while out for a test drive in Britain. How do we know that Jaguar will be calling the wagon/estate variant of the XF the Sportbrake? Well, it’s written in bold type on the side the prototype spied here. There’s also a message about following them on Twitter. Still, there’s the camo trying to cover things up so Jaguar isn’t
giving everything away. But we can make out much of the rounded shape of the rear of this wagon model which gives the car a light, sporty look. The XF Sportbrake will be competing against some illustrious company such as the Audi A6 Avant and the BMW 5-Series Touring. The 2012 Jaguar XF Sportbrake is expected to make a debut at the Geneva motor show next March.
Volkswagen introduces new
Passat Alltrack
T
he Tokyo Motor Show was the setting for Volkswagen to introduce the world to its latest new vehicle – the Passat Alltrack. According to the German carmaker, it closes the gap between a conventional Volkswagen Passat Estate and the Volkswagen Tiguan SUV. It will feature two turbocharged direct injection petrol engines with 118kW and 155kW; as well as two turbo-diesels – one with 103kW and the other with
125kW. The two most powerful versions will have standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a dual-clutch transmission. As an example, the 140PS diesel version will have combined fuel consumption of 41.3mpg with emissions at 150g/km; and the 170PS version will have 40.6mpg and emissions at 152g/km. In addition, the new model boasts bumpers in an SUV style; greater off-road ramp angle; and higher ground clearance. It will launch in early 2012.
Japanese carmakers to establish quick charging services
S
ome of the biggest names in the Japanese car industry will team up to establish an organisation to provide membership based quick charging services for electric cars. Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi will join forces with ULVAC Inc, Kanematsu Corporation, Kandenko Co, Suzuyo Shoji Co, the Development Bank of Japan and Chubu Electric Power Company to form the Charging Network
Development Organisation, which aims to encourage the widespread use of electric vehicles and expand on existing charging infrastructure. By the end of October, only around 800 quick chargers had been installed in Japan– well short from a user’s standpoint. So far they have generally been installed at the owner’s expense by businesses and private organisations for their own use. However, under the new mem-
bership service, the quick charge owners will be able to register their chargers with the organisation in a central database. The organisation will then make information, including number and location, available to users on a central database. Meanwhile, membership fees will be put, in part, towards installation and maintenance costs. The aim is to start offering services during the fiscal year 2012.

Fun and frolic in a flat world
No more catty behaviour
NY health cops leash famed hotel cat
F
ur flew in New York on Wednesday after city health police prompted the venerable Algonquin hotel to put its resident lobby cat on a leash. Matilda III is The Algonquin’s most pampered guest but now has to suffer the indignity of being leashed until she understands that due to newly enforced city hygiene rules the lobby has been declared for human use only. “She’s leashed right now, but as she learns, which she is doing, she will be free,” said Alice Dealmeida, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan hotel, famous for hosting a glamorous literary salon known as the Round Table in the 1920s. The restrictions on Matilda’s movements came under pressure from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which grades eating establishments around the city and can ruin an outlet’s reputation by awarding a dreaded ‘C.’ Removing the cat from the seating area of the hotel’s lobby area, where food is also served, was a preemptive measure while the hotel awaits what it hopes will be an ‘A.’ The New York Post tabloid expressed ‘MEOW’TRAGE’ over the lockdown and posters on Matilda’s Facebook page concurred. “Hhow ruuuuude! Matilda is part of the Algonquin — doesn’t the city have anything better to do??!” howled one fan. “Don’t let them get under your fur, Matilda. You stay right where you are!” snarled another.
Matilda III sits with a leash on the front desk counter AFP
Dealmeida insists that the puss at the center of the attention is taking things easy. “She’s in the lobby smiling and posing. She’s at the front desk,” Dealmeida told AFP. The spokeswoman said the cat was “in training not to go in areas where they serve food” and that once this was accomplished the leash would come off. The Algonquin has always had a house cat since the 1930s. Matilda, the 10th to take up residence, gets regular email and has her own room with a cat door — and room service of course. Health inspections with the mandatory display of grades in restaurant windows were introduced by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg, who has also pushed vigorous anti-smoking and anti-fat food campaigns, says the public displays of the grades lead to higher standards. However, the mayor has seen accusations of imposing ‘nanny-
state’ rules. There was uproar in city media earlier this week after reports that Sardi’s, a venerable theater district bar where pictures of the stars line the walls, had been pressured to end its tradition of providing free, communal cheese platters. Another New York favorite, the Di Fara pizzeria in Brooklyn, was forced to shut down last week — reopening this week — after failing to get a pass grade from health inspectors. In a city of pizza lovers, pizza at Di Fara was considered by some to be the best and it regularly wins top honors from Zagat and other food guides. But inspectors said they found multiple violations, including elevated temperatures and signs of flies and mice. Supporters flocked to the restaurant’s Facebook page. “If there was a rodent having sex with a pig on top of MY pie... I would still eat it... God bless Di Fara’s,” one eager diner posted.
A golden Christmas Japanese jeweller creates gold Christmas tree
F
or those of you who love Christmas but can’t stand falling needles and cheap plastic, Japanese jeweler Ginza Tanaka has created the ultimate Christmas tree — made of pure gold and worth a whopping $2 million. After making a 24-karat gold horse for Japan’s newborn prince, and creating another tree worth $850,000, Ginza Tanaka decided to step it up even more and came up with a solid gold Christmas tree for this holiday season. Measuring 2.4 meters high and weighing around 12 kilograms, the luxurious tree is decorated with golden plates and around 60 heart-shaped ornaments, and covered with ribbon. It’s the most expensive thing Ginza
Tiny tot Tycoon H
arli Jordean is only eight years old but has achieved business success at such an astonishingly young age. The boy is not only the youngest ever person to have a successful business, he’s also the first to give his mother a proper job. Harly Jordean, the young tycoon, hit his success by doing what ever good business should, identifying a market and then covering it to his best abilities. The market in question was marbles. We may live in a world where man has bettered everything from air-flight to games, but nostalgia
14
still lives within us and everybody has at least considered playing with marbles beyond their infancy. Believe it or not, plenty still do, some even collect marbles and this is why Harly Jordean became the ‘Marble King’ so quicly. After all, collectible sets do reach prices come in close to 1000 dollars. Some prohibitively priced products are far from cramping the Marble King’s business as even with most of his family (all older than him) employed, he’s still struggling to cope with the orders he’s getting.
Tanaka has ever made, but while we appreciate the craftsmanship and the effort that went into it, we are not sure gold is right for such an important symbol. After all, what kind of presents are you supposed to put under such a tree, anyway? While $2 million is an impressive price for a Christmas tree, this is far from the most expensive tree ever. Just last year a seven-star hotel in Abu Dhabi exhibited a 13meter-high evergreen Christmas tree decorated with silver and gold bows, ballshaped ornaments, small white lights and expensive jewelry like necklaces and earrings hanging from its branches. It was worth $11 million.

Carefully selected young, healthy neurons can functionally integrate into diseased brain circuitry
Rebuilding the brain’s circuitry N
euron transplants have repaired brain circuitry and substantially normalised function in mice with a brain disorder, an advance indicating that key areas of the mammalian brain are more reparable than was widely believed. Collaborators from Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) transplanted normally functioning embryonic neurons at a carefully selected stage of their development into the hypothalamus of mice unable to respond to leptin, a hormone that regulates metabolism and controls body weight. These mutant mice usually become morbidly obese, but the neuron transplants
repaired defective brain circuits, enabling them to respond to leptin and thus experience substantially less weight gain. Repair at the cellular-level of the hypothalamus — a critical and complex region of the brain that regulates phenomena such as hunger, metabolism, body temperature, and basic behaviours such as sex and aggression — indicates the possibility of new therapeutic approaches to even higher level conditions such as spinal cord injury, autism, epilepsy, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease. “There are only two areas of the brain that are known to normally undergo ongoing largescale neuronal replacement during adulthood on a cellular level — so-called ‘neurogenesis,’
Jeffrey Macklis, Harvard University professor of stem cell and regenerative biology explains a point or the birth of new neurons — the olfactory bulb and the subregion of the hippocampus called the dentate gyrus, with emerging evidence of lower level ongoing neurogenesis in the hypothalamus,” said Jeffrey Macklis, Harvard University professor of stem cell and regenerative biology and HMS
professor of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and one of three corresponding authors on the paper. “The neurons that are added during adulthood in both regions are generally smallish and are thought to act a bit like volume controls over specific signalling. Here we’ve rewired a
high-level system of brain circuitry that does not naturally experience neurogenesis, and this restored substantially normal function.” The two other senior authors on the paper are Jeffrey Flier, dean of Harvard Medical School, and Matthew Anderson, HMS professor of pathology at BIDMC. The findings are to appear in Science. In 2005, Jeffrey Flier, then the George C Reisman professor of medicine at BIDMC, published a landmark study, also in Science, showing that an experimental drug spurred the addition of new neurons in the hypothalamus and offered a potential treatment for obesity. But while the finding was striking, the researchers were unsure whether the new cells functioned like natural neurons.
Women can be offered choice of where to give birth

deprivation score were taken into account. Overall, the rate of adverse outcomes was low in all birth settings (4.3 per 1,000 births) and there were no significant differences in the odds of an adverse outcome for any of the non-obstetric unit settings compared with obstetric units. For women giving birth for the first time (nulliparous women), the risk of an adverse outcome was higher (9.3 per 1,000 births) for planned home births compared with obstetric units, but not for either midwifery unit settings. In contrast, for women who had given birth before (multiparous women), there were no significant differences in the rate of adverse outcomes between
omen with low-risk pregnancies should be able to choose where they give birth, concludes a study. The researchers say their results “support a policy of offering women with low risk pregnancies a choice of birth setting” and will enable women and their partners to have informed discussions with health professionals about planned place of birth. The benefits and risks of birth in different settings have been widely debated in recent years, but there is a lack of good quality evidence comparing the risk of rare but serious perinatal adverse outcomes in these settings. Perinatal refers to the peri-
od just before, during or shortly after birth. So a team led by Professor Peter Brocklehurst from the University of Oxford for the Birthplace in England Collaborative Group set out to compare perinatal outcomes and interventions in labour by planned place of birth across all NHS trusts in England. Planned place of birth included home, freestanding midwifery units, midwife-led units on a hospital site with obstetric services, and obstetric units. Adverse outcomes included stillbirth after start of care in labour, early neonatal death, brain injury (encephalopathy), faeces in the lungs (meconium aspiration syndrome), and injuries to the upper arm or shoulder during birth.
A total of 64,538 single, full term infants born to women with low-risk pregnancies were involved in the study. Factors, such as maternal age, ethnic group, body mass index and
birth settings. The results also show that interventions during labour, such as epidural, forceps delivery or caesarean section, were substantially lower in all non-obstetric unit settings. Transfers from nonobstetric unit settings were also much higher (up to 45 per cent) for nulliparous women than for multiparous women (up to 13 per cent). “These results will enable women and their partners to have informed discussions with health professionals in relation to clinical outcomes and planned place of birth,” say the authors. “For policy makers, the results are important to inform decisions about service provision and commissioning.”

Holistic view of mind, body and soul
Control thyroid the gourmet way Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com
I
f you’ve got hypothyroidism then no matter how less you eat, you’re still going to pile on those kilos. And if you’ve got hyperthyroidism then no matter how much gorge on the choicest of goodies, your racing metabolism will keep you skinny – sometimes too thin for your liking. But with a few minor adjustments you can effectively manage your thyroid condition with the kind of food you eat. For instance people with hypothyroidism tend to have higher cholesterol levels and that makes it harder to lose weight. Also considering hypothyroidism slows down the body metabolism rate, they can’t eat too many carbohydrates as
it is harder for the body to process it. Excess carbohydrates can lead to excess insulin which leads to excess weight gain and someday even diabetes. Diet has been found to be one of the main ways to treat thyroid. Experts recommend stepping up your intake of iodine to combat hypothyroidism. So start introducing iodine-rich foods in your diet. Some foods that could be good for hypothyroidism are: n Fish; n Nuts; n Rice; n Fruit; n Some vegetables – such as carrots; n Flaxseed and linseed oil. However, since the body metabolism slows down in patients with hypothy-
roidism, it might be a good idea to avoid certain foods like • Caffeine drinks – such as coffee and cola; • Refined salt; • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG); • Aspartame; • Saturated fats – such as animal fat, fried foods; • Refined sugars – such as sweets – and natural sugars – such as honey; • Alcohol “Foods like brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, soya beans and cabbage are better avoided or consumed in smaller quantities as some chemicals found in them can suppress iodine levels in the body,” says Dr Raman Boddula, consultant endocrinologist at KIMS Hospital. Doctors recommend following a diet that is high on fresh produce. So foods like sprouts, salads, raw vegetables are good for that thyroid gland. Eat foods rich in vitamin A, such as yellow vegetables, eggs, carrots, and dark green vegetables. Zinc and copper are important in helping the body make the thyroid hormone. Foods rich in zinc include: oatmeal, chicken, seafood, dried beans, bran, tuna, spinach, seeds, and nuts. Foods rich in copper include: organ meats, eggs, yeast, legumes, nuts, and raisins.

Nutritious diet important in pregnancy
Dr Suneetha Sapur
What kind of a diet should be followed during pregnancy? It is important to use iodised salt during pregnancy; iodine intake ensures proper mental health of the growing foetus and infant. Iron rich foods need to be taken care of, as most women suffer from anaemia and this can lead to various complications during pregnancy. Plant foods like legumes, green leafy vegetables and dried fruits contain iron. Iron is also obtained through meat, fish and poultry products. Fruits rich in vitamin C like gooseberries (amla), guava and citrus fruits improve iron absorption. Beverages like tea bind dietary iron and make it unavailable. Hence, they should be avoided before, during or soon after a meal. Dos and don’ts during pregnancy =Eat more whole grain, sprouted
Omega-3 Essential fatty acid ‘Fat of Life’ 1 to 2% omega-3 Essential fatty acid in Daily Diet could cut the risk of Major lifestyle Diseases
O
mega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA’s) also called “good fats” are essential fatty acids that are involved in many bodily processes. The body cannot make these fatty acids and must obtain them from food sources like fish, some plants, nut oils or from supplements. As years of extensive research studies draw to an end, the conclusive results of the importance of Omega-3 are attracting the international media spot light. National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in their new
dietary guidelines for Indian population has strongly recommended to decrease the consumption of saturated fats and increase Essential fatty acid consumption in their
daily diet to reduce the risk of Diabetes, Obesity, Hypertension, Metabolic Syndrome and Heart Diseases. American Heart Association (AHA) has also reported that regular intake Omega 3 fatty acid lowers risk of Stroke, fatal ischemic heart disease & other Coronary Artery Disease by 40% for men and 50% to 70% for women. A good way to incorporate omega-3 essential fatty acid in our diets is to consume an omega-3 supplement like Omegadecc. This is a safe and convenient met-
hod to add omega-3 essential fatty acid to our diet. Above statistics compel us to find an ideal source of omega-3 essential fatty acids to prevent diseases and support our health. This raises the need to include a good quality essential fatty acid food or supplement in our diet, to assure a regular, proportionate and timely supply of essential Fatty Acid. 5 must-have T games on the iPhone 4S
Osama Salman salman.o@postnoon.com
he new A5 processor chip makes the new iPhone a worthy adversary to the other smart phones in today’s market. Having the same processing power as Apple's other product, the iPad 2, the iPhone 4S can handle the latest iOS games. A day after iPhone 4S' official launch in India, we give you the list of the top five best games that you absolutely have to download from the iTunes store. Because if you don't you are, you are missing out a dynamic gaming experience.
Machinarium
M
achinarium is a rare game that stands out in a sea of clones and sequels. First making its release on the PC back in 2009, Machinarium has finally made it's way to the iOS. It plays very much like an old school point-and-click adventure. Needless to say, it fits right at home on the iOS. You control a little robot with the ability to morph the size of his body, which helps you to solve various puzzles and overcome a myriad of obstacles. With stunning visuals and a great sound track, you won't mind taking your time when trying to solve the puzzles you encounter while exploring the game's gorgeous surroundings.
Galaxy on Fire II
T
he Galaxy on Fire series was first popularized by the success of the first game. No less enjoyable, its sequel Galaxy on Fire 2 received an award at a German gaming awards show, earning the “Best Mobile Game” in 2011. Galaxy on Fire 2 takes place thirty-five years after the events of Galaxy on Fire during what is called the 'Void Threat'. You play Keith T. Maxwell where you end up in the future by a glitch caused during a pirate ambush. Gamers are left to fight off pirates along with the main void threat. This new title hosts a few improvements including, new weapons, equipment, missions and even a new trading system. Galaxy on Fire offers a campaign that should last any player dozens of hours.
Dead Space
D
ead Space should be a household name to any hardcore gamer. The series offers such a compelling horror feel and story that the iOS game is a strong companion to the console versions of the game. Dead Space on the iOS was made to promote and hype up the launch for Dead Space 2 but managed to stand out on its own as a great horror title, with crisp graphics and dropping onscreen buttons for a full view of the game. Set only three years after the first Dead Space, you're left trapped on alien infested spaceship. You play as Vandal and much like the console games, you must try to stay alive and escape the Necromorphs. The entire game gives you 3–5 hours of spine-tingling action.
Rage HD
W
hile Rage has just launched to consoles, Rage HD has been out for a while to offer players a small teaser of the full title. Even though the game has already been released, Rage HD is still a great game to pick up and play for the iPhone 4S. That said, the game is very short—three levels short to be exact, or thirty minutes of game-play. Each level only rakes in around ten to fifteen minutes of game-play. Unlike the full game, Rage HD is an FPS on rails, meaning that you won't necessarily be able to take control of the character, aside from deciding where to shoot. Regardless of its length, the game is a steal for less than a dollar.
Infinity Blade 2
E
20
pic Games should be proud of what they brought to the iOS. We want to take the time right now and tell you that if you have not played Infinity Blade then you're missing out a great game! Epic Games recently announced Infinity Blade 2 at Apple's iPhone 4s Presentation Keynote, stating that the game will run quite smoothly with the new A5 processor. Not only has the graphics surpassed anything we have seen on the marketplace thus far, but the game itself will magnify everything we've come to enjoy in the original game, bringing in over 100 new weapons and items, a much larger scaled world with compelling environments and even choices. Likewise, the new game will be far less linear, with side paths allowing you to explore the land. And that is why it deserves to be at the top of the list here.

he story of Desi Boyz is about Jerry Patel and Nick Mathur who take up a job at the Desi Boyz strip club, owned by Sanjay Dutt, for money. And yes, what an apt choice for the role of strippers/pole-dancers — Akshay and John. The movie in short is an absolute visual treat, so don’t bother if you don’t understand why some characters were even introduced in the first place. Keep your focus on the boyz, and you will not be disappointed. Desi Boyz is written and directed by Rohit Dhawan, the son of the one and only David Dhawan. Deepika Padukone is smooth with her acting, and makes for a delightful watch. Chitrangda Singh looks hot as usual, but really, what is the big deal about her acting skills that the country is going gaga about? @SrBachchan candy. Omi Vaidya is convincing in his role of Deepika’s ‘few-minutes lover’. Somehow, the stereotypical roles he does seems to work for him, yet again. The songs are good, and you will definitely find the title song being played in car stereos and in the pubs. There is nothing to take away from Desi Boyz, but we mean it in a good sense. It is not a movie you will mull over the next day, but who wants to either? If for two hours you want to keep your feet up, forget your deadlines, or your nagging betterhalf, it is worth the money. Go, watch Desi Boyz, and yes, most importantly, don’t forget to make some noise.
Hard hitting and touching

apper Missy Elliot has assured fans she is alive and well after false reports of her death began circulating online. The 40-year-old was outraged after a story emerged online suggesting she had passed away. This is the second time she has been targeted by death hoax pranksters this year, reports a website. “I’m great people for all who keep asking! Alive and well! Sadly sum1 (someone) was that miserable to make up such a cruel rumour! It makes me work harder (to) make ‘em mad! I’m done addressing the foolishness! I’m alive! I do get frustrated when I see little kids go really fast beside me but, for the most part, once you get going and you’ve got an idea of how you’re going to ski, it’s kind of fun,” she added. IANS

Deepak Dev sued for copyright infringement
P
opular Malayalam music director Deepak Dev, who shot to limelight with Urumi, has landed in soup for copying a song. Canadian singer, Loreena McKennitt has filed a petition in Delhi High Court alleging that Deepak Dev has plagiarised two of her songs Caravanserai and The Mummers’ Dance for a song named Aaro Nee Aaro in Urumi. Acting on the petition the Delhi High Court has ordered a restriction on the release of the film and also asked the producers
of the film to refrain from using the song in CDs, ringtones, digital downloads etc. The petition was filed back in September and the producers have already released the film in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. In fact, the film has been sent to number of film festivals across the world and it’s also going to be screened at IFFI, Goa this year. Santosh Sivan has directed the film and Prithviraj, Genelia and Prabhu Deva played lead roles in this period film set in the 16th century.

to be screened at IFFI elugu cinema’s tryst with film festivals is terrible to say the least. Telugu films rarely make it to prestigious film festivals but this year, two Telugu films, Bapu’s Sri Rama Rajyam and Neelakanta’s Virodhi are going to be screened at the 42nd International Film Festival of India in Goa. In fact, Bapu’s Sri Rama Rajyam is said to have been included at the last moment and the buzz is that it’s the first time in several years that a full fledged mythological Indian film is going to be screened at IFFI. Both these films are going to be screened in the Indian Panaroma section of the film festival and hundreds of journalists, film critics and movie buffs are expected to watch both the films. Apart from these two films, K Balachander’s Maro Charithra is also going to be screened at the film festival.
ajinikanth’s upcoming film is going to have a strong connection with Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin. After widespread rumours that Rajinikanth’s upcoming trilingual film Rana has been shelved, Soundarya Rajinikanth, one of the co-producers, has officially announced that Rana has been put on backburner for the time being. Instead of Rana,Rajinikanth will begin working on a 3D film titled Kochadaiyan and it’ll be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Interestingly, the film is going to

be the first Indian film to use performance capturing technology to narrate the story. A little bird tells us that Rajinikanth recently saw The Adventures of Tintin and he thoroughly enjoyed the film. Perhaps, that might have triggered the thought of making his upcoming film using Performance capturing technology which has been used in films like Avatar and The Adventures of Tintin. KS Ravikumar is going to direct the film. Soundarya Rajinikanth and Eros International are going to produce the film.

Riveting family drama
27
Movie: Solo Cast: Nara Rohit, Nisha Aggarwal, Prakash Raj, Jayasudha Director: Parasuram Rating:
Solo is a fine example of how good writing and direction can make a world of difference to an interesting theme
T
he film starring Nara Rohit, Nisha Aggarwal and Prakash Raj is about an orphan who wants to get married to a girl who comes from a joint family. Parasuram, who had earlier directed Yuvatha and Anjaneyulu, packs a punch this time with a sensible family drama. Nara Rohit stars as Gautham, an orphan who’s desperately in search of a girl who’s from a joint family. His
loneliness makes him all the more stubborn in his search for a suitable marriage proposal and one day when he comes across Vaishanavi (Nisha), he believes that he has found his right match. The two fall in love but Vaishanavi’s father (Prakash Raj) opposes to their alliance since he expects his daughter to marry a man from a rich family. This conflict between Gautham and Vaishanavi’s
father forms the basis for the rest of the story. The film unravels slowly as Parasuram takes his time to establish the relationship between Rohit and Nisha. Aided with some brilliant comic timing from Srinivas Reddy and Swapnika, most part of the first half goes on a lighter note till Prakash Raj enters the scene. It’s only towards the end of first half that the film turns into an emotional family drama. It’s all the
more surprising because Parasuram draws inspiration from Bommarillu Bhaskar who had made films like Bommarillu and Parugu. The dialogues in the film are noteworthy and performances from Nara Rohit, Prakash Raj and Jayasudha do justice to their characters. It’s not everyday that you see films where you end up having a lump in your throat while watching an emotional scene and there lies the film’s
real essence. Nisha Aggarwal’s emotional breakdown towards the end of the film is one of the defining moments of the film and the actress does a fine job. The film’s music and cinematography are top notch. The film does remind us of Bommarillu and Parugu, but Solo succeeds in leaving a distinct mark of its own. Watch it because it’s a story which has its heart in the right place. HEMANTH KUMAR
Bezawada’s
climax reshot? N
aga Chaitanya’s upcoming film Bezawada is said to be so violent that the director Vivek Krishna and RGV decided to reshoot some of the portions of the film. A source close to the film unit informs that the final version of the film’s pre-climax sequence is totally different from its original version. After films like Ye Maya Chesave and 100% Love, Naga Chaitanya is experimenting with a bold theme which has been surrounded by controversies since its inception. Although the film has been set in modern era and not based on anyone’s personal life, rumours are rife that the film is inspired heavily from the rivalry between two powerful factions in Vijayawada in ‘80s and ‘90s. Amala Paul is playing the lead role in the film and it’s all set to hit the screens on December 1.
The Business Man’s audio launch on Dec 23 T
he audio of Mahesh Babu’s upcoming film, The Business Man is going to be launched on December 23. Currently, SS Thaman is working on the final recording of all the songs in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. He’s reportedly working with an orchestra
comprising 80 musicians for one of the tracks in the film. Mahesh Babu, Kajal Aggarwal are playing lead roles in the film. Puri Jagannadh is directing it and it’s his second film with Mahesh Babu after Pokiri. The film is all set to release on January 11, 2012.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
