So say TDP corporators who believe that the GHMC is spending too much time on the CoP while allowing government hospitals to descend into a pathetic state, putting the lives of patients at risk. But as this picture shows, even CoP visitors will not be safe, thanks to the shoddy job being done at venues like the Paryatak Bhavan tourism department in Begumpet.

Death of widow: Paramour held Killers disfigured the woman with acid but in the process, suffered acid burns themselves and that gave them away.

T
he murder mystery involving a 45-year-old woman last week, which the Shamshabad police worked out, tells a story of lust, love and money. P Suguna, the widow of one P Rangaiah, was given the job of a cleaner in the railway hospital after her husband’s death in 2003. She developed a relationship with 55-year-old K Kumaraiah, a security guard at the same hospital. Kumaraiah
has a family in Kothur village of Mahbubnagar. Shamshabad ACP Ch Srinivas said that on interrogating the suspects, Kumaraiah and his accomplice Narsimha, it was revealed that Kumaraiah and Suguna had been living as man and wife and he was financially supporting her. He often gave her money and recently, bought a new bike for her son. Suguna recently demanded `50,000, which Kumaraiah said he did not have. An argument ensued and Suguna allegedly threatened to make their rela-

Narsimha Swamy, to kill Suguna. Accordingly, the two suggested a picnic and a party in Tondpally village. Suguna agreed to the plan. The three had drinks and
dinner and she was cajoled to consume a lot of liquor. As she lay dozing, the duo allegedly throttled her to death. To prevent identification, they poured acid on her face, and left the body there. The body, when found by the police, was left unidentified. Meanwhile, Suguna’s son lodged a missing complaint with the Shamshabad police. The police made inquiries at the hospital, where employees told them about the illicit relationship she had with the guard. Police picked up Kumaraiah and found his hands had acid burns. He then broke down during questioning and related the entire incident. The Shamshabad police also seized from him a gold chain, gold earrings and mobile phone, all of which were taken off the dead woman.

GHMC high on CoP: TDP TDP corporators accuse GHMC of neglecting suffering people in hospitals. Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com
“T
he GHMC should unshackle itself from the intoxication generated by CoP and focus on pressing issues of health,” demanded TDP corporators. The party corporators who recently made visits to several hospitals in the City found the services to be inefficient and insufficient. According to Singi Reddy Srinivas Reddy, one of the reasons for the outbreak of contagious diseases was the pathetic condition of the government hospitals. A substantial number of cases pertaining to malaria, chikungunya, swine flu and other highly contagious diseases were reported recently because of negligence of offi-
cials. Essential drugs are not available and that has led to many deaths. In his letter addressed to the chief minister on Tuesday,
Reddy pointed out that the government departments and the GHMC have utterly failed to curtail the spread of dreadful diseases. The State government

and various other organisations are clueless. Speaking to Postnoon, Reddy pointed out that two ministers, Danam Nagender and Mukesh Goud, are chiefly responsible for taking care of the City’s healthcare facility, but they are nowhere to be found. He demanded the government to include dengue and malaria in Arogyashri so that poor people can afford treatment and also work towards controlling the number of deaths in the City. “GHMC and other medical departments should supply timely immunisation medicine from homeopathy, allopathic, ayurvedic and unani for curing ailments and deadly ailments through designated centers inside Corporation limits,” demanded Reddy, floor leader (TDP).
Police received information from various sources that Telangana activists might enter Hyderabad well in advance to make the Telangana march a grand success. Apart from this, the intelligence department has also sprung into action to keep an eye on the Telangana Joint Action Committee leaders across 10 districts of the Telangana region.

arimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar has demanded the TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu send a letter to the Centre on the Telangana issue, before launching his proposed ‘Vasthunna Meekosam’ Padayatra on October 2. Ponnam said that the Telangana TDP Forum leaders have to announce their stand on Telangana immediately. He warned that Babu could tour Telangana only after announcing his stand on the Telangana issue. Ponnam has also urged the CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy and ministers from Telangana region to appraise the Centre on the importance and need for creation of separate Telangana state before the march to be held on September 30. pointed out. Hyderabad is unwilling to join the new state if it is proposed. MIM, is dead against joining Telangana. This factor has also gone against KCR and now the difficulty of convincing TJAC to call of the march rests with TRS leaders. Leaders say a word of assurance is all that is required to keep the Telangana leaders and cadres off for a while. But even that is unlikely in the present scenario. OU-JAC, T-JAC employees and other T fronts are making a sparring motion to mess up the world meet so that Telangana will become a global issue.
aving failed to raise various public issues during the recently held assembly session, the Telugu Desam Party has now shifted its focus on the proposed padayatra by party president N Chandrababu Naidu from October 2. According to the preliminary plan, the 2,300-km long padayatra will conclude on January 26, next year. “We have already made all the arrangements for the padayatra. We are now planning to figure out the most important region-based public problems. For instance, farmers of one region are suffering from drought and farmers of some other regions do not have electricity to water their crops. We will highlight all these problems during the padayatra and compel the State government to solve these problems,” TDP MLA Jaipal Yadav told Postnoon. Commenting on mobilisa-
tion of people for the padayatra, another party MLA A Revanth Reddy said that they don't have to mobilise people for the programme. “Our party president will be going from one place to another and meet people of that particular area. There will not be any mobilisation of people during the programme,” he said. The padayatra being undertaken by Naidu will cover all the three regions (Telangana, Andhra and Rayalaseema region) of the State.

Parallel meet to focus on sustainability
FREUDIAN SLIP?
The Cities for Life conference, to be held alongside the CoP-11, will focus on urban and sub-urban biodiversity. RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com
T
his October, along with the CoP-11 on biodiversity, a parallel biodiversity summit will be conducted by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) along with the Government of India, the AP State government and the GHMC. This summit, named as Cities for life: Cities and Subnational biodiversity summit, will be held on October 15 and 16. The focus of this summit, which will be held at HICC, will be to feature a interactive dialogue by bringing local and sub-national governments across the globe to implement the Decision X/ 22 on the Plan of Action on sub-national governments, cities and local authorities for biodiversity.
Over 200 delegates have registered, representing 40 cities and 16 sub-national governments from 36 countries. The purpose of the meet is to take stock of progress since the City Biodiversity Summit at CoP10 at Nagoya; to outline the latest relevant tools and initiatives; to reiterate the importance of ecosystem services and understanding their value; and to present a response to the Plan of Action. This will be the third of its kind to be organised parallel to CoP, but the first to take place adjacent to the CoP negotiations. Over 300 participants, ranging from city and sub-national lead-
ers, national governments, international organisations, UN agencies and specialists from across the world, are expected to come to Hyderabad. Over 200 delegates have registered, representing 40 cities and 16 sub-national governments from 36 countries. ICLEI, the world’s leading association of over 1,200 cities and local governments dedicated to sustainable development, was one of the key partners who organized the City Biodiversity Summit at Nagoya, Japan in 2010. R Hampaiah, chairman of the AP State Biodiversity board, said, “This is going to be one of the many side events scheduled for the CoP-11. The focus of this meet will be exclusively on implementation of Nagoya protocol’s many decisions and also environmental awareness on biodiversity in cities and urban areas.”

An X-ray of CoP: 5 Ws and 1 H
Postnoon takes a look at some stark realities of CoP ahead of the much written-about conference. PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com
W
hat is CoP and what is it trying to achieve? The common man, the main stakeholder, is not told what the discussion is all about. Here, Postnoon turns the light on some stark realities of CoP. A lot has been written about CoP-11 in Hyderabad but even the elite and core decision-makers in the government have only a vague idea about its importance and the need for India to capture the initiative in preserving its biological diversity. Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) is a global treaty with three main objectives: Conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of its components, and equitable use of benefits from its genetic sources. It was generated at the World Earth Summit at Rio in 1992 and came into force the next year. Each country was to develop a strategy to preserve its biodiver-
sity and share the benefits. This is because preservation of biological diversity is essential for the balanced and healthy socio-economic growth of the whole human race. The CBD today has 193 signatories, including India.
The legally binding nature of the CBD is often bypassed by powerful nations and also by the ambitious emerging nations.
CoP, A TOWER OF BABEL?
Conference of Parties (CoP) is the CBD’s highest decision-making body. It is convened every two years. Till now, the CoP has not achieved much, as it proves a Tower of Babel, with cacophony emerging from it. Except for the pomp and show, no ground breaking work has been done, though the CBD is a legally binding agreement and the world is bound to observe the provisions.
S Faizi, member of the CBD expert group, says the legally binding nature of the CBD is bypassed by powerful nations and also by the ambitious emerging nations. This suits the pirates and the robbers. The culpability of the Indian government is no less. He points out how 2,000 patents based on Indian genetic resources were taken abroad last year without the consent of the government. The loss of Ongole bull to Brazil is the prime sad saga of this country’s neglect of its genetic sources. This is despite India enacting Biological Diversity (BD) Act in 2002.
WHAT BLOCKS CBD?
Undue importance to GDP, economic development and forgetting the basic fact that man cannot live on money. This is the simplest explanation why the world is pushing the implementation of CBD around. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, executive secretary of the CBD secretariat, admits as much. He has set an agenda that include streamlining
the work of CoP; mainstreaming of biodiversity into development agendas; promoting biodiversity concerns across society and government departments.
INDIA’S CASE
India’s overdependence on Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is no reflection of the wealth distribution and popular well-being, is blamed for
B for business, not biodiversity
T
he government, in a period of one year, allowed the following with no meaningful EIA study: n Coal mines: 181 n Thermal power plants: 267 n Steel plants: 188 n Cement units: 106 In this scenario, any substantial gain in the legally binding framework for conserving biodiversity of India and the world seems a distant dream.
overindulging industry and commerce at the cost of biological diversity and agrarian sector. India had three heavy doses of economic liberalisation that leads to preference to industry over environment. The fundamental fact that all wealths are the bounty of nature and protecting it is in man’s interests is forgotten by the rulers. So, the biodiversity act remains a toothless tiger. More and more people are displaced and more and more lands are being appropriated, ignoring the concerns of the local people and economic impact assessment. Making special economic zones is the sterling example. The Central government, over the last 10 years, created 587 SEZs, displacing lakhs of people. Such actions prove that even though India has accepted the CBD, those in power still prefer the exclusionary and conventional top-down models of conservation rather than participatory systems that link sustainable livelihoods with conservation.

Techies turn shutterbugs Their passion for photography and the lure of a better career, both financially and creatively, has several IT professionals chucking their jobs to befriend the camera. SUDESHNA KOKA sudeshna.k@postnoon.com
R
eady, lights, camera, shoot! Clicking pictures is no longer just confined to the official photography certificate holder and studio photographers. Today, the field of photography has grown by leaps and bounds. One would be surprised to see IT professionals quitting their jobs and taking up photography as a full time career. “When I was working with Google I would go on office trips. That is why my interest in photography took seed. I began with a small digital point and shoot camera and now I have a high end camera. I have now taken up photography as a full time job and I find it much more satisfying both professionally and financially,” said Deepika Puri, a wedding photographer. For most IT professionals, their interest in photography starts as a way to destress. “People’s spending power has gone up of late. Everyone has the money to buy a high end camera and people don’t hesitate to click pictures. Earlier, Bangalore was the only hub for photographers because it is surrounded by many scenic places. Although that is not the case with Hyderabad, people now focus on
clicking street photographs and candid shots,” said Kishor Nagari, an employee with Broadridge. Kishor along with a few others started a club called Hyderabad weekend shoot in 2006. Today more than 24,000
photographers from the City are a part of this group and 90 per cent of them are IT professionals. The group conducts photo walks almost every week and is an open group, so anybody interested can join. They also hold dis-
cussions about the various equipments and help each other hone their photography skills. “I was working with Dell for the last eight years. On weekends I would click photographs and that is how I got hooked to
photography. Friends and acquaintances began liking my pictures and that was encouraging. Today, I am a full time wedding photographer,” said Peddu Eshwar, destination wedding photographer. He goes on to add, “We Indians believe that only engineering can sustain us, but I wanted to prove that notion wrong. After working in the IT industry for eight years I decided to quit and turn my hobby into a career. And it paid.” Financially too, photography has a great scope. On an average photographers charge nearly `50,000 per shoot, which excludes travel and stay. In a month they take up 5 to 6 such shoots. “I earn more that what I used to in Google. I am getting paid for my passion and it gives me an immense sense of fulfilment,” said Deepika. However, there is a large group of IT professionals who only take it up as a part time profession. They freelance for various stock picture companies and international magazines. “Photography started as a stress buster for me, but now I take up freelance work. I believe that if I take it up as a career I will be chasing big bucks and lose my freedom and creativity in the bargain. Hence, I do it on weekends,” said Maheshwar Rao.

lipkart is bringing their gaming tournament to the City this weekend and the organisers are expecting around 400 gamers to participate. The two-day event includes games such as Counter Strike 1.6, Fifa 12, DoTA, Super Street Fighter IV (XBox 360) and Sony Street Cricket (PS3). Interested gamers can register online or at the venue. All registrations will be on the first day from 9am to 12.30pm. Gnanashekhar Reddy, one of the organisers says that on the first day the organisers want to complete DoTA competition and start Fifa matches. “Fifa will be
organised across two days as it’s an individual event and will have more players. The other games, Street Cricket being an exception, are team games so there’ll be fewer matches,” he says. Counter Strike contests and Fifa finals will be organised on the second day. Hyderabad gamers are traditionally stronger in Counter Strike compared to DoTA and Fifa. Most of the winners at national level in DoTA have been from Bangalore and Mumbai, while Fifa winners are from Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore. A few gamers who spoke to Postnoon were concerned that there were no racing games at the event. According to Reddy

this is because they only picked one game per platform, except for PC which has two. In the second stage, the
organisers are planning to include newer games such as Counter Strike:GO apart from having demos of newer games.
“We also plan to organise the next stage in a bigger venue like malls,” Reddy says. The event was earlier organised in Chennai and Bangalore; after completing the Hyderabad event the company plans to launch the second stage in November where the winners of the first stage in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad will get wild card entries. According to the organisers, the current stage is primarily targeted at gamers who are new to pro gaming. This is so that new gamers get a taste of gaming competitively before facing tougher established gamers. Location: Diginet Gaming Cafe Dates: September: 29, 30 Timing: 9am - 8:30pm

AFGHANISTAN
Mission Kabul: it’s over
Almost three years after US President Barack Obama vowed to "seize the initiative" with a surge of forces to Afghanistan, his great gamble has come to an end. KABUL, AFGHANISTAN: The final remnants of those extra American troops departed last week, leaving behind a country still wracked by violence and bitterly divided, and still unsure of what has been achieved. For each triumph on the battlefield there was, people here say, often a loss elsewhere. Now with time running out and Washington having played its strongest card, optimism is hard to find. Even when lawmaker Abdul Jabar Qahraman is taking the short trip from his house in Kabul to the Ministry of Defense across town, he has his bodyguards well prepared and a plan for the journey carefully laid out. Like anyone else who openly opposes the Taliban, his world is shrinking fast and he knows it. "All over Afghanistan security does not exist," he said. A huge figure who swears profusely, Qahraman was a general in the army during the Communist era of the 1980s. He now serves as a Member of Parliament for Helmand, a southern province that absorbed many of the 33,000 extra troops deployed in the surge. US Marines suffered heavy casualties there as they fought for control of some of the country’s most hostile territory. NATO is adamant the situation has improved. Whether any success can last, however, is another matter. The Taliban have always demonstrated an ability to adapt to changing conditions and the feeling persists that they are confident enough of ultimate victory to accept temporary defeats and setbacks. Qahraman is skeptical the surge had any positive impact. He claims assassinations are still a serious problem in his province and believes the central government will collapse if all conventional foreign combat troops leave Afghanistan as scheduled in two years. “Every single day our people are dying at the hands of the insurgents. Anyone can kill anyone else at any time without any fear and without being arrested,” he said. The increasingly tense and paranoid atmosphere developing in much of the country was only heightened in the week leading up to the end of the surge, when a series of alarming events hit the headlines. First a Taliban assault inside the largest military base in
A lot of blood was spilled, Afghans were massacred and a lot of them went outside as refugees. Rana Tarin Senator, Khandahar Helmand left a pair of US Marines dead. The attack is estimated to have caused around $200 million worth of damage. Next the rebel faction that had previously shown the most interest in peace talks conducted a suicide attack in Kabul that killed 12 people. The group, Hizb-e-Islami, said the bomber was a young woman named Fatima. Then it was revealed that NATO would be suspending the majority of joint operations with Afghan forces because of the

growing number of foreign troops being gunned down by their local colleagues. In his 2009 speech announcing the surge, Obama declared “a more effective civilian strategy” would accompany the additional military personnel, telling the Afghan government, “we expect those who are ineffective or corrupt to be held accountable”. But Abdul Satar Saadat, a Kabul-based analyst, criticized the US for not following through on this. He said the Afghan parliament had shown some signs of
growing strength, but claimed warlords continued to dominate the political scene. “Besides the invasion and the occupation this was another excuse used by the Taliban to receive the support of the people,” he said. There are still roughly 68,000 American troops in Afghanistan, compared to the 32,000 that were here when Obama first took office. Since 2001, more than 2,000 US troops have died in the war. Although there is an acknowledgement among officials in Washington that some kind of insurgency is likely to continue for years to come, they insist the government here will be capable of defending itself and rule out any chance of the rebels seizing power. Many Afghans see the situation differently and are terrified about what the future could hold. Rana Tarin is a senator for Kandahar province where, she told GlobalPost, the surge has improved security. Now she fears those gains will soon be lost
as the Taliban seek to reassert themselves in their traditional heartland. “Before there was killing every single day: assassinations, attacks on police stations, suicide attacks. Right now there has been a large decrease but that does not mean we have solved our problems 100 percent,” she said. “Because they are very tired of fighting, the Kandahari people think that any day they do not lose a member of their family or hear an explosion in the city is good.” In some form or other the defeat of the Soviet Union haunts everyone here. The US and its NATO allies are desperate to avoid a similar debacle and the citizens of this country remember all too well what fate awaited them the last time they were left to fend for themselves. “A lot of blood was spilled, Afghans were massacred and a lot of them went outside as refugees,” Tarin said. “Again there is a worry the same things will happen.” GLOBAL POST

However, the recent power crisis in the State, sand issues and doubts over political stability and peacefulness are still hindering the growth of the market. Still, the developers have to pay high price for the sand, which is `40,000 for a truck. Unfortunately, government did not do much on this issue. Even the workforce (labour), who are not getting continuous work because of all this issues may move to other cities. This could even create human resource problem in the city. Another application filed earlier by activist Dev Ashish Bhattacharya had revealed that between 1997 and 2007, some 183,000 tonnes of wheat, 633,000 tonnes of rice and 111,000 tonnes of maize were damaged at different FCI warehouses. Minister of state for food and public distribution KV Thomas had told Parliament in June that more than 6.6 million tonnes of wheat, meant for sale through state-run fair-price shops, was lying in the open. Official data showed that the agency had a capacity for 63.82 million tonnes of covered storage as on April 1. Against this, grain production this year is expected to be 117.18 million tonnes. IANS

Party sources said several legislators owing allegiance to 53-year-old Ajit Pawar are firm that the party should quit the government and extend outside support to the ministry. The simmering tensions in the 13-year-old coalition came to the fore yesterday with the resignation of Ajit, 53-year-old nephew of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, following reports of scam to the tune of thousands of crores of rupees in irrigation projects during his tenure as water resources minister between 1999 and 2009. Senior NCP leaders, including party chief Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule, have said the resignations tendered by all party ministers, submitted to state unit chief Madhukar Pichad yesterday, were a result of being “swayed by emotions” in support of Ajit Pawar. Bihar to use FB to boost cattle fair PATNA: Bihar plans to use socialnetworking sites to popularize Asia’s largest cattle fair held annually at Sonepur in the state, a police official said Tuesday. Saran district Superintendent of Police Sujeet Kumar said the tourism department, along with
the district administration, will use social-networking sites, including Facebook, to popularise the Sonepur cattle fair from this year. “The Sonepur cattle fair will find a place on social networking sites like Facebook to attract domestic and foreign tourists,” he said. Kumar said it will be the first such move to use Facebook to popularise the Sonepur cattle fair worldwide. In a bid to attract tourists, the government has decided to hire event managers for the fair this time. The fair, beginning Nov 27, is spread across 500 acres near the confluence of two rivers - the Ganga and the Gandak - and has been held every year for centuries. The event, which begins on Kartik Purnima, is reportedly the only one of its kind in the sub-continent. Animals like horses, cows, oxen, goats, buffaloes, donkeys, ponies, monkeys, rabbits, bears, cats and guinea pigs are traded at the fair.

‘Made in China’ coffins enter Kerala market
Shortage of wood and lack of trained manpower to make coffins have led to its scarcity in the state, paving way for the entry of the Chinese products.
A
variety of products have flooded Indian market after the liberalisation process was initiated two decades ago and the latest one to make its entry is ‘made in China’ coffins. A consignment containing 170 coffins have arrived in Kerala with a Alappuzha district-based company entering into a tie-up with a firm in Shanghai. “We have entered into a tieup with a firm in Shanghai for the manufacture of coffins,” said Sateesh Thomas, proprietor of a company who is importing the coffins. The coffins, named ‘Sworgapetty (Heaven box), is made from the Paulownia tree wood, available in plenty in China. “The wood is environment friendly, strong and degradable in a week’s time,
Thomas said here. “This is the first time that coffins made in China is coming to Indian market,” he said. The price ranges between `20,000 to `2 lakh. “We plan to bring in more
boxes at a stretch and also planning to import the materials and assemble it here, to reduce the prices, to make it affordable to the common man.” Shortage of wood and lack of trained manpower to make
coffins have led to its scarcity in the state, he said and cited it as reasons behind the firm, now engaged in furniture business, to diverse its operations to coffin import. “Coffin making is a family owned business. The new generation is not coming forward to take up the business, mainly due to some kind of negative image associated with the trade,” he said. In China, coffins made of cardboards were available. But, they were not suitable to Indian beliefs and culture, he said. “We have asked the agency in Shanghai to re-design the coffins in tune with the cultural conditions of the country.” The price of cardboard coffins would be very less compared to the ones made of Paulownia tree wood, he said. We can’t have enough of Mitt ‘Gaffy’ Romney. The latest is his asking why can’t we open windows on planes. And this is the man who hopes to pip Barack Obama, who is leading by leaps and bounds in opinion polls, thanks to Mitt, of course. Silence is golden: never heard that, have you, Mitt?
he number of social networking sites are increasing by the day and most technology literate people, especially the youngsters, are hooked on to one platform or the other. These websites came as a boon to people who are away from their family and friends due to work, studies and other unavoidable commitments. They provide free means of communication, entertainment and networking facilities for professional and personal purposes. One can keep track of developments in the lives of people connected to them with the least of efforts. However, in course of time, the tools that were aids became a necessity and eventually an addiction. Mere websites became benchmarks for determining friends and foes, for gauging one’s own acceptability, to judge loyalties, and of course, social standing. The obsession with impressing others, already fuelled by a culture driven by consumerism, takes uncontrollable proportions. People are devoting time, energy and money into ‘perfect-
ing’ their virtual lives and in the end, lose out in real life. Though a direct comparison will be an exaggeration, the film Matrix kind of portrays the situation of those who are totally dependent on social networking sites. In the movie, all are plugged into a virtual reality that caters to all needs. People go about their lives full of happiness and all seem perfect. However, the reality is that all are nothing but masses of flesh and bone cocooned in containers, with no connection to real life. For example, a bodybuilding champion in the matrix is in reality as weak as a newborn. There have been reports of relationships breaking off due to disagreements over what should be its influence on the partners’ online profiles. Wives and husbands dumping partners because they are ‘single’ online!!! Many confess to using photo editing tools to make themselves look better in their display pictures and admit that one of their biggest worries is about friends tagging them in photographs that would provide a reality contrast to the carefully managed online profiles. It was barely a year ago when an East Asian couple, obsessed with an online virtual farming game on a top social networking site, kept forgetting to feed their child. Though the
farms plants and animals thrived due to constant monitoring, the real child succumbed to a malnutrition-induced ailment. These networking platforms have also emerged as hot spots of e-bullying where people gang up to insult, blackmail and defame others. The number of suicides and violent crimes that is in some way or the other connected to social networking sites are rising at an alarming rate. However, blaming social networking sites would be akin to blaming liquor for alcoholism. It is our uncontrolled pursuit of limelight that is enabling these platforms to act
as force-multipliers for vices and abuse. Virtual world bonding stops at virtual levels and cannot help with real life issues. If we spend a fraction of our online time in making real friends and socialising, we will be much better off. And you won’t have some friend’s friend’s friend making comments on your looks. Come on, these are just websites and nothing more. Let us not give them the importance they don’t deserve and allow them to dictate our social life. The writer works for Postnoon.

here’s always a hullabaloo whenever anything grim about and global warming and climate change emerges. It could be report, a study, or a general consensus to do something about it. The leaders of the mighty and weak nations gather, they say hi and then won’t do a thing about doing the necessary to arrest a phenomenon that we all know is going to cause a catastrophe. Islands are starting to vanish, courtesy the rising sea water level due to the melting of ice in the poles; when rain is expected, droughts happen, when it’s supposed to be the time of blazing sun, we get thunderous downpour. Yet we refuse to take cue and act. The DARA and Climate Vulnerable Forum report due to be presented on Wednesday in New York talks about the economic fallout of climate change. current economic development that will increasingly hold back growth, on the basis of an important updating and revision of previous estimates of losses linked to climate change". However, here’s the silver lining: “Tackling climate change's causes would instead bring "significant economic benefits for world, major economies and poor nations alike." Now, is that not something? If the world’s leaders can’t take measures to arrest climate change for the sake of earth and the people and other beings that inhabit it, how about doing something for economic benefits? And there’s real bad news for China, the US and India. “In less than 20 years China will incur the greatest share of all losses at over $1.2 trillion. The US economy will be held back by more two percent of GDP; India, over five percent of its GDP”. So are we gonna do something about it?

MOVIE OF THE WEEK Drakula Halala (1921) Portrayed by Paul Askonas
A
Hungarian film version of Dracula, The Death of Dracula (Drakula Halala) was the first adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel. Widely searched for by horror fanatics, Drakula Halala is a silent film. A girl has frightening visions after visiting an insane asylum where one of the inmates claims to be Drakula and she cannot be sure whether they were nightmares or real.

F
or its time, this was just very chilling. Nobody was expecting a Dracula adaption this soon. The film kept the key characters and the plot, but Max Schreck’s portrayal gave such a different style to Dracula, as he became more demonic than humanistic. Overall, this particular film became a classic for being truly scary in the 1920s, and yet, is still creepy to a modern-day audience.
Count Dracula (1970) Portrayed by Christopher Lee
A
nother take on Dracula by an older Christopher Lee. Dracula’s play with age is revealed in this version, with Christopher Lee looking older in the beginning, but changing into a younger form once arriving in Jonathan Harker’s home town. This was perhaps the most creepy Dracula of all time, especially with Klaus Kinski’s silent role as Renfield.
The House of Dracula Now with animation film Hotel Transylvania releasing, Count Dracula is back in focus. Dracula has been featured in more than 161 films and is the second most popular horror movie character. Here’s some proof of his popularity. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) Portrayed by Gary Oldman
W
hat made this version so good was that it went all out with the Dracula book. The scenes were realistically disturbing, as there was plenty of nudity and gore, which captured the novel’s spirit. Gary Oldman was perfect as Dracula — scary, disturbing, sexually seductive, an age switcher and most of all, unpredictable.
Dracula: Dead and Loving it (1995 ) Portrayed by Leslie Nielsen
Looper In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by transporting back Joe's future self. This movie marks the third collaboration between director Rian Johnson and lead actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the first being Brick, and the second being a quick cameo in The Brothers Bloom as a bar patron with a guitar.

nother spoof from Mel Brooks. Basically, he took Bram Stoker's Dracula, gave it a new script and made a big joke out of it. The usual, rich English are attacked by Dracula and Dr. Van Helsing is brought in to save the day. Much of the dialogue from the original Dracula is repeated here and spoofed, as well as Leslie Nielsen doing a spoof-impersonation of the famed Bela Lugosi.

eart ailments? I am too young to be worried about that thought 32-year-old Sameer till the day he was rushed to the hospital. Like Sameer, many of us may express surprise about the onset of heart disease so early but the reality is that today, a sizeable chunk of patients undergoing treatment for heart disease are younger people.
in instances. Dr Shiv Kumar says, “The most common factor I have seen is smoking. Many cases where young people have been admitted due to myocardial infarction (heart attack), a history of smoking is noticed. Apart from this the other possible causes could be obesity and lack of physical exercise as well as some cases in which heart ailments occur due to genetic causes.” Another growing cause is believed to be out fast paced
lives where improper diet and stressful jobs take priority over our health. These factors too have started to contribute to heart disease in the youth. Earlier instances of heart disease are more common among males. Dr Shiv Kumar says, “We see more cases of heart disease among men. Seeing the lifestyle changes nowadays (smoking) even women soon will see an increase. Once a person has crossed 40 cases of heart disease are common among both.”
TESTING AND PREVENTION According to Dr Shiv Kumar, a stress test and lipids test can be conducted to keep a watch on possible heart disease. Apart from testing it is important that precautions are taken to prevent the onset of the ailment. Dr Shivkumar says, “One should indulge in physical activity and avoid the intake of junk and fatty food.” Cutting down smoking and a healthy routine (diet and exercise) is also advised.

WHAT IS HEART DISEASE Heart disease refers to a variety of heart ailments such as CAD, congenital heart disease, heart attacks etc. It is one of the growing causes of death among people, including the youth. According to latest studies, signs of heart disease are being seen among the youth itself. This is in terms of blocked arteries due to the deposition of cholesterol. The cholesterol builds up in the arteries and slowly blocks the blood flow to the heart. According to Dr J Shiv Kumar, chief cardiologist, Apollo Hospital, Secunderabad, “It is becoming very common even in India to see heart disease among younger people. We do see people in the age groups of 20-30 and 30-40 suffering from these problems.”

Human immunodeficiency virus is a type of virus called a retrovirus, which infects the human immune system. HIV may cause AIDS (a collection of diseases and symptoms, or problems in the body) by eventually killing the white blood cells, which a healthy body uses to fight off disease. It is usually transmitted by transfer of infected body fluids like during blood transfusion, sexual contact, sharing of needles etc.
Human hair is virtually indestructible. Aside from it’s flammability, human hair decays at such a slow rate that it is practically non-disintegrative. If you’ve ever wondered how it clogs your pipes consider this: hair cannot be destroyed by weather, water and resistant to many acids.
Fidel Pagés Miravé was a Spanish military surgeon, known for developing the technique of epidural anaesthesia. He practised a wide range of traumatological and surgical techniques, both for war and civil purposes. Due to his early accidental death, his work in epidural anaesthesia went unnoticed for many years until he was finally given full credit by the medical community in the 1930s and 40s.

RESEARCH
BREAKTHROUGH
Psychopaths have poor sense of smell: Scientists
Headset zaps epilepsy, depression
norms. It also appears to be important in processing olfactory signals, although the precise function is unclear, according to previous research. Odour molecules bind to specific nerve cells in the base of the nose, which then send signals via the lateral olfactory tract to the primary olfactory cortex. From there, the signals go to OFC via a brain organ called the mediodorsal nucleus, located in the thalamus. The study makes clear that a poor sense of smell does not by itself mean that someone is a psychopath. Olfactory dysfunction can also occur in schizophrenia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, it notes.
LONDON: A small headset created by scientists can zap depression or epilepsy when you are asleep. It comprises two square, sticky pads, attached to either side of the forehead, just above a major nerve in the brain. These pads are wired with a mobile phone-sized box that sits at the waist. The box generates a small electrical pulse that lasts 30 seconds and is followed 30 seconds later by another pulse. The pulses stimulate the trigeminal nerve and can reduce the number and severity of epileptic seizures as lowering depression. The procedure, called Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation, was created by University of California neurologists. Studies have shown that a small number of severely epileptic patients who used the gadget for a year saw their number of seizures drop by an average of 60 per cent, the Daily Mail reports. Tests on people with major depression saw their scores on the Beck Depression Inventory, a scale used to rank depression, improve significantly. The device, known as Monarch, was further developed by the medical devices firm Neurosigma and has now been approved for use in Europe after pilot studies showed it could provide an additional treatment for patients with depression and epilepsy.

According to a recent study, people with psychopathy, a severe personality disorder, have trouble correctly identifying smells or differentiating one from the other. PARIS: Psychopaths have a remarkably poor sense of smell, according to a study published on Thursday. Researchers in Australia tested a theory that psychopathy — a severe personality disorder characterised by lack of empathy, antisocial behaviour and callousness — may be linked to impaired smell ability. Both phenomena have been independently traced to dysfunction in part of the brain called the orbito-frontal complex (OFC). Mehmet Mahmut and Richard Stevenson of the Department of Psychology at Sydney’s Macquarie University trialled the olfactory skills of 79 individuals, aged 19 to 21, who had been diagnosed as non-
criminal psychopaths and lived in the community. Using “Sniffin’ Sticks” — 16 pens that contain different scents, such as orange, coffee and leather — they found the participants had problems in correctly identifying the smell, and then discriminating it against a different odour. Those who scored highest on a standard scorecard of psychopathic traits did worst on both counts, even though they knew that they were smelling something. The finding could be useful for identifying psychopaths, who are famously manipulative in the face of questioning, says the paper, published in the journal Chemosensory Perception.
Using “Sniffin’ Sticks” they found the participants had problems in correctly identifying the smell presented to them. “Olfactory measures represent a potentially interesting marker for psychopathic traits, because performance expectancies are unclear in odour tests and may therefore be less susceptible to attempts to fake ‘good’ or ‘bad’ responses.” The OFC is a front part of the brain responsible for controlling impulses, planning and behaving in line with social

Cuba tests prostate cancer vaccine HAVANA: Cuban scientists said they have concluded the second round of the clinical trial of a potential vaccine against prostate cancer. Urologist Ranfis Rodriguez Monday said 56 patients, who were vaccinated in two hospitals, showed a remarkable improvement in their condition.
A decrease in specific prostate tumour antigens was observed with little or no production of testosterone, said Rodriguez, who leads a research team at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Camaguey, a city 530 km east of Havana.
The Heber Provac vaccine is applied in advanced stages of prostate cancer but before the patient receives X-ray or chemotherapy treatment, in order to make hormonal suppression possible, he said. Another expert, Jesus Junco, said the vaccine designed to combat stage 3
and 4 malignant tumours should be as effective as or more effective than standard treatments in the future. Researchers will study the vaccine’s interaction with other drugs and make comparison with standard drugs and treatments used to fight the disease, he said. IANS

rabhas’ upcoming film Rebel, which is going to release on September 28, is turning out to be a huge gamble. Directed by Raghava Lawrence, the film has been reportedly made on a budget of more than `40 crore, the highest in Prabhas’ career so far. Despite the humongous budget, producers J Bhagawan and J Pulla Rao are a happy lot. The film’s distribution rights have been sold in almost all areas for a record price for a Prabhas’ film, thanks to the success of Mr.Perfect and Darling. Buzz in the industry is that Rebel has been sold for almost `9 crore in Nizam to Dil Raju, a leading producer and distributor and in Ceded region, the film’s distribution rights have fetched more than `6 crore. Despite the phenomenal business which the film has done so far, the real challenge for the film would be to live upto the expectations. “Prabhas’ biggest hit so far is Mr.Perfect which collected a share of close to `32 crore. Rebel does have the advantage of getting a solo release on September 28 but it’ll be extremely difficult to recover the budget if the film doesn’t do well in the opening weekend,” the source said. There are other concerns which might hamper Rebel’s run at box office. With Ganesh immersion scheduled on September 29 and Telangana march on September 30, Rebel will be facing a tricky situation, at least in Hyderabad and its suburbs. It’s been a great year for most of the big star-studded, big budget films this year, but the real question is will Rebel manage to continue the success streak?

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

ONE FOR THE CHAMP
SUBROTO CUP
Verdasco’s sympathy for Nadal Verdasco said everyone was behind Nadal, 11-time Grand Slam winner who revealed he had no idea when his injury will allow him to return to tennis.
BANGKOK: Fernando Verd asco offered words of sympathy for injured fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal Tuesday after surviving a scare to reach the ATP Thailand Open second round. The fifth seed and former semi-finalist had to figure out a way to win as he rallied past Japanese surprise package Tatsuma Ito 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, eventually advancing at a canter. Afterwards, Verdasco said everyone was behind Nadal, the 11-time Grand Slam winner who has revealed he has no idea when his left knee injury will
allow him to return to tennis. “He is the best player in history from Spain and everyone cares for him. But only he knows his feelings,” Verdasco said. “He is the only one who can decide when he comes back to play. I don’t know what more to say really.” Ito went off the boil after a torrid start, allowing the courtwise Spaniard to get the job done in the end. “He really surprised me, I had never seen him play,” said world number 23 Verdasco. “He played an unbelievable first set and I knew after that if I
wanted to come back I would have to give 100 percent. I didn’t expect that he would have played so well. “But in the second set he let his level go a bit and by the third I was playing better than him. It was a very difficult match and one I’m glad I got through.” Elsewhere, Australia’s Bernard Tomic ousted former champion Guillermo GarciaLopez 6-0, 6-2 in a rousing start to his campaign. The eighth seed, who is the only teenager in the top 50 but turns 20 in a matter of weeks,
may have benefited from a foot injury troubling his Spanish opponent, who needed treatment after losing the first set. “He’s a good player and won this tournament before,” Tomic said of Garcia-Lopez, who beat Nadal in the semi-finals on his way to victory in 2010. “But I’m playing really well. I’ve trained in the heat here and I’m ready to play.” Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, 21, took more than two-and-aquarter hours to get past Yang Tsung-hua of Taiwan 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7). Three former finalists, Viktor Troicki of Serbia, Finn Jarkko Nieminen and 2011 runner-up Donald Young of the United States all advanced into the second round as rain hammered down on the indoor arena. Sixth seed Troicki had the tougher first round match, coming back from a set down to defeat Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine 6-7 (4/7), 7-5, 6-3. The win broke a losing streak for world number 31 Troicki, who was knocked out in his opening matches at his previous two tournaments. “I’m happy with this firstround performance,” said the Serb, who will play either Frenchman Gael Monfils or South African qualifier Kevin Anderson in the next round. “No matter whom I play in the next round, it will be a tough match again for sure. I hope I can keep playing as well as I did today,” he added. AFP

RYDER CUP, 2012 (SEPTEMBER 28-30)
Chicago gets its first taste
The Ryder Cup came to Chicago for the first time as US and Europe teams got their first taste of the remodelled Medinah Country Club No.3 course. ALLAN KELLY Agence France-Presse CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: The Ryder Cup came to Chicago for the first time on Tuesday as the US and European teams got their first taste of the largelyremodelled Medinah Country Club No.3 course. The early consensus was that when the 39th edition of golf’s most spectacular event gets going on Friday, there will be birdies galore, even some eagles and that chip-ins from the scarce rough around the greens will be a common occurrence. The event, in short, will be much more in keeping with the 2008 competition at Valhalla in Kentucky when the United States won for the only time in the last 13 years. The weather forecast for benign, near-perfect playing conditions for the rest of the week, in stark contrast to the wild weather that nearly wrecked the event at Celtic Manor, Wales two years ago, was further cause for US optimism. Davis Love has exercised his rights as skipper of the hosts to have the final say in the layout of the course and he has opted for less rough and wider fair-
Bradley all geared up ALLAN KELLY Agence France-Presse CHICAGO: Keegan Bradley has won a major championship, but he’s never felt more pleased to be on a golf course than he did on the first hole of Tuesday’s practice round at the 2012 Ryder Cup.
Bradley earned the rookie of the year honours last year after a brilliant debut season on the PGA Tour with a victory in Atlanta.

ways - especially around the 280- 290-yards mark to encourage the long-hitters. “It’s more my personal preference for the style of golf I like to watch and I like to play,” he said. “I’ve just never been a fan
of driving it in the rough and chipping it out and playing a wedge game. Match play, the Ryder Cup, is a whole different animal (to the majors), and we want it to be fun for the players and we want it to be fun for the
fans.” There was no shortage of big-time support for the US as they went about their first practice session with showbiz celebrities like Bill Murray and Justin Timberlake joining up.
“I was walking to the first tee and it was the proudest moment of my career and it happened on a Tuesday at the Ryder Cup,” Bradley said. Bradley earned the rookie of the year honours last year after a brilliant debut season on the PGA Tour which featured a victory at the PGA Championship in Atlanta. He also had two tournament wins. The 26-year-old is one of four rookies on the USA team which will square off against the European team, beginning Friday at the Medinah Country Club. Bradley comes from a golfing family. At a very young age he remembers his aunt Pat Bradley playing for Solheim Cup teams.
Hard work pays off Furyk to help anchor team CHICAGO: Martin Kaymer has been tagged in some quarters as being the weak link in the European team, but while admitting his form has been off, he says that hard work has brought him back to his best. The German was world number one for eight weeks last year before tinkering with his swing at the Masters to favour a draw which resulted in a loss of form. He did win the HSBC Championship in Hong Kong late in the year, but is winless this year and his world ranking has slumped to 32nd, which makes him 23rd out of the 24 players at
Medinah ahead of only European wild card Nicolas Colsaerts. He only squeezed into Jose Maria Olazabal’s side as the 10th and last automatic qualifier, but is doubly determined to show that he deserves to win his second cap. Kaymer said that with the Ryder Cup spotlight about to fall on him he took to the driving range, hitting shot after shot until his hands ached. “I was not happy the way I hit the ball, and I spent even more time on the range with my coach (German Gunther Kessler). AFP
CHICAGO: With 21 caps between them, Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are being counted on to not only hit some great shots but also help calm the nerves of the four rookies on the US Ryder Cup team. The 42-year-old Furyk has played 27 Ryder Cup matches dating back to 1997 and will be making his eighth consecutive appearance. With that kind of Ryder Cup resume it’s no wonder that teammate Bubba Watson likes to refer to him as the “quarterback” of the USA team.

“Bubba called me the quarterback last week which makes me a little nervous,” Furyk said.
“I am not sure what the plays are and I am going to have to call them.” AFP

PALLEKELE, SRI LANKA: Pakistan bludgeoned Bangladesh out of the World Twenty20 and successfully reached the Super Eights round with a ruthless batting display on Tuesday. Imran Nazir's brilliant 72 and skipper Mohammad Hafeez's 45 helped take Pakistan past Bangladesh's challenging 175-6 in Pallekele, after already overhauling the target needed to go through on net run-rate. Shakib Al Hasan had smashed a record 84 for Bangladesh, who needed to win by 36 runs to go through, raising the prospect of a shock upset against the former champions. But those hopes were quickly dashed by opener Nazir's career-best knock, including nine boundaries and three sixes in 36 balls, which made up the bulk of Pakistan's 124 for the opening wicket with Hafeez.

WOMEN’S T20 Eves gear up for World Cup challenge in SL GALLE: Away from the hype surrounding the men's tournament, the Women's World Twenty20 will start here tomorrow but India's campaign will kick off a day later when they take on Australia on Thursday. The tournament will kicks off with hosts Sri Lanka taking on South Africa in the opening match at Galle International Cricket Stadium. Eight women's teams will be competing in the tournament

Group A includes defending champion Australia, 2009 winner England, and traditional rivals India and Pakistan, who go head to head a day after the equivalent men's Super Eight stage fixture on 1 October. Mancini a victim?
STEVE GRIFFITHS LONDON: Manchester City suffered a surprise exit from the League Cup on Tuesday as Aston Villa clinched a 4-2 third round win at Eastlands, while Chelsea welcomed back controversial captain John Terry with a 6-0 rout of Wolves. City manager Roberto Mancini made 11 changes from the side held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal on Sunday and the Premier League champions weren’t able to win with their stand-ins. Italian striker Mario Balotelli fired City ahead in the 27th minute, but Villa equalised in the 59th minute when their

former midfielder Gareth Barry deflected the ball into his own net. City regained the lead when Aleksandar Kolarov clipped a free-kick past Shay Given in the 64th minute, but Gabriel Agbonlahor restored parity six minutes later. And in the sixth minute of extra-time, Agbonlahor fired in a shot that City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon couldn’t hold and Charles N’Zogbia was on hand to slot home before Agbonalahor completed the upset with seven minutes remaining. Leeds caused the biggest upset of the night as the Championship club defeated Everton 2-1 at Elland Road. Toffees boss David Moyes made six changes to the side that beat Swansea 3-0, but his reserves weren’t up to the task. Aidan White rocked Everton in the fourth minute as the Republic of Ireland Under21 international weaved his way past several challenges before curling a shot past Jan Mucha. Everton squandered several chances to equalise before Rodolph Austin poked home Danny Pugh’s pass in the 70th minute and Sylvain Distin’s 81st minute goal was too late to spark a comeback.
MANCHESTER: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini believes he is being treated unfairly by his Premier League counterparts. Mancini had a touchline row with Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert during City’s 4-2 League Cup third round defeat at Eastlands on Tuesday in the latest of a long line of managerial disagreements involving the City chief. The Italian has rowed with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Everton’s David Moyes, Stoke manager Tony Pulis and QPR boss Mark Hughes. “I am tired of this manager because I didn’t say anything to him,” Mancini said. “I asked the fourth official if it was a yellow card without moving my hands. “Some managers go to bigger stadiums and they don’t say anything. I am tired of this, very tired. I am tired of their behaviour.”
Juve drop points The Old Lady of Turin could be joined on 13 points should Napoli beat third-placed Lazio. ROME: Italian champions Juventus extended their unbeaten Serie A run to 44 games on Tuesday but dropped points for the first time this season as they drew 0-0 away at Fiorentina. ‘The Old Lady of Turin’ — who went through the whole of last season unbeaten — could be joined on 13 points should closest challengers Napoli beat thirdplaced Lazio on Wednesday. Juventus legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said that both sides had been tired after playing at the weekend.
“Fiorentina were good, they have a good coach and a playing system they believe in,” he said. “I would say that it is a good point we have got here, it is a good sign, as we clearly suffered.
