s a measure to ensure that various GHMC works are completed unabated, the mayor Mohd Majid Hussain has asked the engineers to ensure their completion, while ‘black listing’ the contractors failing to meet the deadlines. The mayor sought explanation from the executive engineers for not black listing the contractors who failed to start the work even after the finalisation of tenders in the e-procurement process. Recalling the provision of eprocurement, where the digital key of a contractor could be locked, he wondered why such laxity had crept into the department works when all the officials were technically sound. The mayor held a review meeting of engineering works pertaining to Central Zone, in which K Sivaparvathi, zonal commissioner (Central Zone) and K Suresh Kumar, chief engineer were present. He said that the GHMC has allocated crores of rupees budget provision for the corporators to take up the works in their divisions, unfortunately last year and present year budget has not been utilised and the works are pending. After verification of progress report of the works, he felt annoyed to note that works assigned for the Bonalu festival were still incomplete even after end of Ramzan. The mayor observed that the works which were already sanctioned three months ago were

not being grounded, for which he directed the engineers to recall and to take up the works on priority basis even if it meant black listing erring contractors. In the interest of general population, he has now directed the officials to take up the patch works, including those left incomplete by the R&B department. He has instructed the chief engineer to fix the responsibility on the superintendent engineer for monitoring the works and records that are being maintained by the executive engineers. He found that there were many gaps in the progress reports prepared by the executive engineers and direct-

‘Best experience playing here’ On their third tour of India, Finnish rock band Poets of The Fall speaks to Postnoon about their musical journey.

n the City was Finnish band Poets of the Fall. This being their third tour of India, the Poets spoke to Postnoon about music and their journey as a band so far. About their latest album Temple of Thought, vocalist and band spokesperson Marko Saaresto said, “Temple of Thought is what I consider the end of the trilogy — Signs of Life, Carnival of Rust and now Temple of Thought. It reflects the three main phases of evolution in man’s life. So far, the album has been receiving a great response in India and abroad.” The band made new records with their first single Late Goodbye that won international

acclaim when it was made for a videogame. About their journey so far, Marko explains, “There have been many ups and downs from the beginning. Even though we are three main performers accompanied by three other session and tour musicians, we like to think of everybody as a part of the band. I personally feel great

being a part of this experience which has received much appreciation and criticism. I cannot think of being anything else apart from what I am with the band right now.” The only thing surprising about this band is that all the Poets have decided collectively to let Marko be their spokesper-

son. “They do not interact much and hence I get to do all this,” he says, waving his hands in the general direction of the cameras and news reporters. Their tour in India has already covered Delhi and Pune, where Marko says, “The crowd is terrific and sometimes it’s just crazy. We have always had the

best experiences playing in India.” As to why they named themselves Poets of the Fall was because they stumbled upon the name through many other choices and decided that it had a good ring to it. In Marko’s words, “We felt, all the three of us together, that this is certainly the name we are going to stick to.” And the name certainly has an impact. With the melancholic, theatrical rock label that their music carries off, the name certainly sticks. “We come from Finland where the music scene is very happening. But as a band, we don’t stick either with the metalheads or the pop rock bands. It’s almost like being an oddball,” Marko says. About their plans of hitting the studios for another album, Marko is uncertain. “We love touring and this year’s tours have been great indeed. I do not know about hitting the studios. We have no plan as of now.”

He said, “We have to encourage the non-conventional energy, study the incentives given in other states, we have to be competitive and it should be a win-win situation.” He assured the wind energy developers that the tariff issue will be finalised soon and asked the energy department to take it up with the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Committee, which is looking into this issue. Officials informed the CM that the department officials had fruitful discussions with the solar power developers. The solar power developers told Kiran Kumar Reddy that the departments are very cooperative and they have decided to set up solar power plants here. The total estimated gross potential of wind power in the State is 8,275MW and NREDCAP has till date sanctioned a capacity of 3,643.10MW to various wind turbine manufacturers and independent developers. Every time one of the City’s fashionistas wanted to pick up an exclusive piece by a well-known designer they would invariably fly to one of the other metros or make do with what was on offer at one of the multi-designer stores in the City. Not that these stores weren’t great, but they just weren’t like visiting a flagship store now, were they? But then with Rocky S opening his store here in partnership, Tarun Tahiliani being the latest to join the bandwagon and Sabyasachi soon setting up his standalone store here as well, Hyderabadi fashion has just gone several steps up. What’s even better is that unlike earlier, designer stores

(multi-designer and exclusive ones) make sure that they stock up the latest designs. “As a store owner, I ensure I have the latest collection. We go to the fashion weeks and make sure we’ve got the designers’ latest collections for our clients at the store,” says Smita Shroff, owner, Elahe, who is soon going to set up Sabyasachi’s store. So what is it that is bringing top-notch fashion designers to the City? “Why not? The City has always had a culture of great luxury and people’s taste for luxury has been kind of ingrained. Besides, we’ve always liked to be at the forefront of things. So Hyderabad seemed like a great choice. “We’ve had some clients from here at our Mumbai store. This is a great time for the City to grow as a fashion market and it’s always nice to join the fray early on. It gives you a chance to learn and create a niche market for yourself. Besides, our clothes

here are well-appreciated. They are after all about their superior finishing,” says Tarun Tahiliani, who recently inaugurated his store in Banjara Hills.

There is space for everybody in the market. For instance, a multidesigner store offers clients variety while on the other hand a standalone store can have plenty of bridal designs unlike a multidesigner one. So one won’t eat into the other’s business, because there’s plenty of scope for both kinds of stores,” believes Smita. Giving credence to this seems to be Kimaya, one of most well known multi-designer stores from Mumbai, which is soon going to open a store in the City. “We have a lot of Hyderabadi clientele, especially from the Reddy community. So we did our studies and realised that the market here looks very promising for us. Setting up a store here is just our way of getting closer to our Hyderabadi clients. Besides, Hyderabadi women are a perfect balance of understated and bling, which is great when it comes to fashion,” says Pradeep Hirani, chairman, Kimaya Fashion Pvt Ltd, who will be inaugurating the store in the first week of September.

n a cramped and tiny office in the South Korean capital, an 80-yearold man displays letters postmarked “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” in pale red ink. The imprints with North Korea’s official name testify to Kim KyungJae’s success in reconnecting some of the tens of thousands of family members separated for decades by the world’s last Cold War frontier. There are no civilian mail or phone connections across the closely guarded inter-Korean border, and

many do not even know whether their loved ones are still alive. Sporadic reunions arranged by the two sides since 2000 have brought together only a fraction of those seeking news, and have been halted because of political tensions. Kim and his colleagues in a ninemember foundation called the Separated Family Union try to bridge the gap, using the postal systems of third countries or brokers. Kim sends about 70 to 80 letters and packages every year to North Koreans at the request of families in the South. It takes roughly 30 days for letters to arrive and another 30

But sometimes letters cannot be sent by a public route, in which case Shim Goo-Seob, co-founder of the foundation, takes over and arranges for a broker to make a more unorthodox delivery. The document could be tied to a rock and thrown over a narrow section of the Yalu river border with China, or sneaked through in a container truck. Until a few years ago all postal traffic was one-way, with South Koreans looking for relatives in the North. But now many North Koreans are seeking family mem-

Despite the high commission and the difficulties, families in the South keep sending packages because they make such a difference in the poverty-stricken North. “They (Northerners) always send letters saying the small efforts and money we’ve put in here has made a big difference there,” said Kim. “Southerners think they know how bad the situation is there, but it’s a whole lot worse than it appears. Things that are trivial to us here can be of great use there.” South Koreans who receive a letter from the North for the first time usually burst into tears out of pity at the plight of their relatives, he said.

Many industry experts say that only 10 per cent of the engineering graduates are employable and some of them even worry that IT industry will move away from the country, if the sector doesn’t provide quality human resource. It is not completely true that the students are not suitable to the industry. If that were the case, many industries like IT would not have boomed in the country. However, the role of educational institute is different from industrial human resource needs. Each industry has its own requirement and it is extremely difficult to tailor make students for all of these industries, said KV Vishnu Raju, chairman, Sri Vishnu Educational Society. The fundamentals are taught at university level either it is in US or in India. The students who develop strong fundamentals can understand and pick up industrial requirements easily at a later time, said Raju. “Technology is changing rapidly especially in industries like IT and electronics. Where in the students work for the industry during their summer holidays and understand the skills required by the industry and will develop them overtime. Most of their childhood, especially from Class VIII to Class XII, spent aimed at these exams. The overall personality development is compromised by not playing games and by not participating in extracurricular activities. The creativity of the child is being killed in the race for these entrance exams. “However, at least in engineering colleges, there is need to bring in humanities courses. For instance, In US or in the UK, the student should do minimum number of non-engineering subjects like history or philosophy,” “Science and arts go hand in hand and will be essential to the overall development of the student,” he adds.

Air India to carry ads on planes NEW DELHI: Flag carrier Air India, reeling under accumulated losses and loans of around `67,520 crore, is planning to carry advertisements on its aircraft to mobilise additional revenue. “We have plans to allow advertisers to put up ads on the aircraft. Ads can be placed on the tail or the hull of the aircraft,” a highly placed source in the national airline told IANS.

The airline is looking to earn around `500,000 to `20 lakh per aircraft per month for an advertisement. More than one advertisement it hopes would raise the monthly earnings to `40 lakh per aircraft. Air India currently has 111 aircraft in its fleet and this revenue is expected to ease the carrier’s debts. The airline is, however, more bullish on the in-flight

Today, he has even appeared opposite awardwinning actress Rituparna Sengupta in Muktodhara, a film loosely based on his life and transformation. Nigel Akkara, 34, was initially reluctant, but dancer Alokananda Ray and then IG (prisons) BD Sharma convinced him to be part of the activity, under a government-sponsored

move to reform prison inmates through cultural engagement. Ray decided to stage the dance-drama “Valmiki Pratibha” by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The actors were selected from among jailbirds, and Nigel played the lead role of dacoit Ratnakar who transforms into sage Valmiki. That play transformed Nigel. It also helped in opening new avenues for him following his release from prison in 2009 after serving a nine-year term. “I was mesmerised by the acceptance that I got after ‘Valmiki Pratibha’. Sometimes,

I want them to lead a normal life,” he says. Nigel’s big break came when he got the chance to play the lead role opposite Sengupta in Muktodhara. “The film is not completely autobiographical; there is a good bit of fiction mixed in. But the biggest thing I got after acting in the movie was acceptance and recognition as a

Apart from employing former jailmates in his business, Nigel also runs a home for children of prisoners to provide them a good education. Almost all the children in the home study in renowned Englishmedium schools. However, he has now decided to close down the home and transfer them to various boarding schools as residents near the home have become aware of the identity of the students and are keeping them at arm’s length. “I thank society for giving me a second chance. I personally feel that someone who comes out of prison deserves a second chance. You can’t punish a person for the same sin twice,” Nigel told. IANS.

About 19,320 children went missing between 2009 January and August 15, 2012. NEW DELHI: Twelve children disappear in Delhi every day, with missing girls outnumbering boys. A total of 3,171 children 1,652 girls and 1,519 boys — went missing in the capital this year till August 15 and police are yet to trace 985 of them, according to official statistics. But police say the rate of missing children has come down marginally this year compared to last year. According to statistics, on an average 14 children went missing in a day in 2011, while it has come down to 12 in 2012. Last year, a total of 5,111 — 2,665 girls and 2,446 boys — went missing out of which 981 are yet to be located.

The last two years have seen the number of missing girls surpassing boys. The number of untraced girls has also been on the higher side. “No specific reason can be attributed to this,” a police official said. He said children, who were traced cited various reasons for their disappearance, including being misguided by people, maltreatment by parents, pressure of studies, unsound mind, going on own will, elopement and human trafficking. According to figures, a total of 19,320 children went missing between 2009 January and August 15, 2012, out of which 3,305 are yet to be traced. PTI

have often wondered if it’s a believer or an atheist who is better for Earth. And, with the amassed wisdom of several decades, I now declare it is, of course, the non believer — be it an agonistic or an atheist. Because at least he will not come after you with a hatchet like the believer does. Therefore, I watch with alarm that atheism or non-belief has been declining in the developing countries, mainly because of the fall of communism. Conversely, unbelief has been growing in the First World but, but not enough to counter the rapid growth of believers in the countries that we call the Third World. Since the ‘60s atheists have been declining in world population. A study by Britannica says atheists are now 2.4 per cent of the global populace. It was some 10 per cent in the ‘50s. Agnostics (who believe the world is beyond the limited sensory realm of man but believes there’s a spirit) and those who are indifferent to religion are also somewhat on the decline. They are now 11.5 per cent from 20 per cent.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

For South Asia it means a lot. Believers tend to fall prey to religious bigotry which we see today in Pakistan and many other Islamic countries. Believers also are easily bamboozled by a

wily priesthood. In India much of the social discrimination and community crimes are associated with religious beliefs (like Sati) and are justified by the priesthood. While, not surprisingly, India does not have data of believers and non-believers (it never had data on anything, anyway), it is believed by Rationalists Associations that the country has less than two per cent population who publicly admit to be nonbelievers. Many atheists are coy, too. For instance, AK Antony is an atheist but he would never admit it in public for fear of reprisals from the majority — the believers. Atheist Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru could do little for India while he infused a bit of enthusiasm for ‘scientific temper’ in social life. But the Communists had this advantage of professing atheism publicly but now they are so compelled to allow believers a big say just for the vote bank. For example, in Kerala, which gave Communists the first toe-hold in free India, the Communists changed their tactics four decades ago asking the cadres to intrude into temple management so that they could hold a sway over them. But their strategy worked only with Hindu temples.

WEST GROWS OPPOSITE!

A pleasant surprise is in the developed West. The number of atheists is rising, though not phenomenally. The First World will probably become a larger part of the world’s total population, so atheism may be headed towards a long term recovery.

fter making waves in the society with its work, Street Cause an NGO comprising of college students is spreading its wings. Its new division Street Cause Gold came into force in May and now is a 75 member-strong group. Apart from college students, this division of the NGO has corporate employees, independent businessmen and alumni of Street Cause as part of the group. One of the founding members of the NGO, Anup Kumar Thati who owns a construction company says, “There are many restrictions collegians have to face while working for Street Cause. A student who is in their fourth year cannot be officially part of the Street Cause activities and since it is a student-based NGO, there is no question of being part of it after college. I am an alumnus of CBIT and while at the college, I was part of one event that they had organised. We had visited HIV positive patients in ARK home at Sainikpuri and spent the day with them. It was an amazing experience to spent time with the kids at the home. Since then, while doing my masters, I was in touch with the Street Cause members and given them advices and help. There are many collegians who want to work for the underprivileged for a longer time and through college it is an impossible task. Street Cause Gold is the answer we came up with.

It is said that around 300mg of caffeine (approximately three regular cups of coffee) is the maximum amount of coffee one can consume. According to Dr Jain, “Caffeine intoxication is caused by excess amounts of caffeine. People drink coffee as it stimulates the mind and keeps them alert. It also helps people distress. When a person has excess amounts of coffee the alert mind crosses a threshold resulting in symptoms such as a feeling of restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, will have a problem sleeping as the mind is awake and people who are predisposed to anxiety attacks will notice that their condition accelerates.” Talking about the symptoms, Dr Jain explains that clinically if patients come with symptoms such as a racing heartbeat, nervousness, restlessness, palpitations and insomnia doctors look at the possible stimulant responsible for this. People who consume

excessive caffeine also feel the urge to urinate frequently. There are three common stimulants – alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. The other possible problems include headaches, rambling speech and thought, gastrointestinal problems, depression etc.

WITHDRAWAL As there is no specific treatment per se, cutting down one’s consumption of caffeine is important. Many people may experience withdrawal symptoms. Dr Roshan says, “These may be physical and psychological symptoms. Physical symptoms could imply feeling restless or very tired and in terms of psychological symptoms it could include an urge for coffee as they associate caffeine with relaxation and similar activities. These symptoms are overcome over time. One could start taking a healthy alternative instead. Slowly they will not feel the need for excessive caffeine.” According to Dr Jain, caffeine disorders are common in people who have desk jobs, IT professionals and students as it helps them work or study long hours.

Around 21.9 per cent of Kerala’s population is addicted to smoking and in the process, makes itself vulnerable to a wide variety of diseases such as cancer, heart ailments and osteoporosis. OTTAWA: Work stress doubles the risk of developing diabetes for women who have little or no control over what they do on the job, according to a new study. The same is not true for men. “Men and women react differently to workplace stress,” Peter Smith, lead author of the nine-year study by researchers at the Institute for Work and Health and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto, told AFP. Smith suggested that women under stress may be “more likely to turn to foods with higher fat and sugar content than men,” as one possible explanation for the results. failure at school, etc) the feelings seem more real and powerful than they should to the adults around them. ‘Act then think’ is often what they follow since their brain development pushes for risk taking adventurous acts. To help a teen, it is important to help the teen understand that what they are experiencing is normal. Offer them comfort and support and let them express their emotions without asking for

an explanation of why they are feeling that way, if they don’t know the answer themselves. Talk with them about how to manage their emotions. SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. He deserves an uninterrupted run to cement a place. New Zealand need to do a lot of soul-searching. They have not learnt their lessons after the humiliation in the West Indies. Their inability to play spin was cruelly exposed. Their static approach to batting while under pressure proved their downfall. Only Brendon McCullum and Kane Wiliamson applied themselves and showed how spin can be played. But their contributions were insignificant as the rest, bar James Franklin in the first innings, were just swept away. Flight is key armoury for a spinner. Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha used this weapon to good effect while claiming 18 of the 20 wickets that fell. And it was flight which played a big part for India’s Under-19 side. Their two spinners, Baba Aparajith and Harmeet Singh, clever varied their flight to confuse the opposition. India did not start off well. The batting did not fire until the semi-finals. However, the bowling efforts were stupendous. The pace attack of Sandeep Sharma and Ravikant Singh was outstanding. They showed admirable line, length and swing. India went into the final as underdogs. Their opponents, Australia, had done superbly throughout the tournament. But India turned it on at the right moment. They got early wickets before letting the initiative slip. The target of 225 was a stiff one. Losing four wickets for 97 in the run chase was disheartening. But captain Unmukt Chand scored an inspiring century to guide India through. Chand, like his predecessor Virat Kohli, has shown a lot of potential. So have Aparajith and Harmeet. They are now ready for higher things. The selectors must take notice and ease them into the next level as soon as possible. India’s cricket is undergoing a change. The time is right for new blood to be infused. Chand, Aparajith and Harmeet, if neglected, may pick up bad habits and stunt their own growth. Develop them now and India’s future will be in good hands.

We have three to four days to rectify that. Obviously spin is an area we need to work on and come back harder and stronger in Bangalore,” Taylor said after their heavy defeat against India, here today. Taylor said more than anything they need to be strong mentally while negotiating spinners. “Come Bangalore, we need to be as positive as possible, clear the mind, trust our defence, but also find a way of scoring runs as well. It’s about rotating the strike, finding your single options. We are not big players of using our feet, so we need to create lengths in different ways. In the next game, I am sure we will do that. “Obviously a little bit of technique but I think most of it is probably in the mind. Trusting your defence and trusting your attacking shots. When you get bogged down, it puts a lot of pressure on you and there was a lot of pressure going out there,” he said. Taylor praised the Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, who shared 18 wickets between them. “Ashwin bowled very well. Not only Aswhin, Ojha bowled very well and they bowled well in tandem. They put a lot of pressure on us, bowled in very good areas. “I guess when you enforce a follow on and have got a big total, you can have a lot of men around the bat and Dhoni did that. They bowled in the areas for long enough and reaped the

rewards.” Taylor was optimistic of drawing the series by winning the Bangalore Test, starting Friday. “We can still draw the series. That’s the good thing about a two-Test series. I thought Kane Williamson and Brendon applied themselves really well for a long period of time and showed that it can be done,” he said. Without DRS, New Zealand had to cope with Brendon McCullum’s dismissal when umpire Steve Davis overlooked a bat-pad decision. But Taylor was not critical of the poor umpiring decision. “That’s just cricket. Brendon didn’t mean to get out. Obviously no DRS. The umpires are human and make mistakes. It’s a part and parcel of cricket. “Obviously different parts of the world have different rules in different sports. It’s part and parcel coming to this part of the world.”

Those who bought the tickets online at kyazoonga.com, can receive the amount online itself. The refunding process will start from today, i.e. August 27 till August 31. Any request after these dates shall not be entertained.
