s a measure to ensure that various GHMC works are completed unabated, the mayor Mohd Majid Hussain has asked the engineers to ensure their completion, while ‘black listing’ the contractors failing to meet the deadlines. The mayor sought explanation from the executive engineers for not black listing the contractors who failed to start the work even after the finalisation of tenders in the e-procurement process. Recalling the provision of eprocurement, where the digital key of a contractor could be locked, he wondered why such laxity had crept into the department works when all the officials were technically sound. The mayor held a review meeting of engineering works pertaining to Central Zone, in which K Sivaparvathi, zonal commissioner (Central Zone) and K Suresh Kumar, chief engineer were present. He said that the GHMC has allocated crores of rupees budget provision for the corporators to take up the works in their divisions, unfortunately last year and present year budget has not been utilised and the works are pending. After verification of progress report of the works, he felt annoyed to note that works assigned for the Bonalu festival were still incomplete even after end of Ramzan. The mayor observed that the works which were already sanctioned three months ago were
not being grounded, for which he directed the engineers to recall and to take up the works on priority basis even if it meant black listing erring contractors. In the interest of general population, he has now directed the officials to take up the patch works, including those left incomplete by the R&B department. He has instructed the chief engineer to fix the responsibility on the superintendent engineer for monitoring the works and records that are being maintained by the executive engineers. He appealed to the public to utilise the services of control rooms, established by GHMC working 24x7 and lodge their monsoon related complaints to the control room concerned.

As one of the strategies, the Krishna district unit of TDP has lodged a complaint with the District Consumer Forum against the Southern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited (SPDCL), accusing it of not implementing the assurances given by the State government. A team led by Mylavaram MLA and TDP district president Devineni Umamaheswara Rao have filed the complaint in the
Forum. Earlier, MLA Beeda Mastan Rao, along with his followers laid seige to the Sub-station at Vengalarao Nagar in Kavali town on Friday. Meanwhile, the TDP politbu-

Addressing media at Kakinada the TDP leader accused Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana of focussing more on retaining their power rather than addressing the existing power crisis. Ramakrishnudu said the chief minister must put pressure on the Centre seeking an increased allocation of coal and gas, so that power generation could be improved. He said it was unfortunate that the Congress is in power both in the State and at the Centre are doing little in this regard.

About their latest album Temple of Thought, vocalist and band spokesperson Marko Saaresto said, “Temple of Thought is what I consider the end of the trilogy — Signs of Life, Carnival of Rust and now Temple of Thought. It reflects the three main phases of evolution in man’s life. So far, the album has been receiving a great response in India and abroad.” The band made new records with their first single Late Goodbye that won international

acclaim when it was made for a videogame. About their journey so far, Marko explains, “There have been many ups and downs from the beginning. Even though we are three main performers accompanied by three other session and tour musicians, we like to think of everybody as a part of the band. I personally feel great
being a part of this experience which has received much appreciation and criticism. I cannot think of being anything else apart from what I am with the band right now.” The only thing surprising about this band is that all the Poets have decided collectively to let Marko be their spokesper-
son. “They do not interact much and hence I get to do all this,” he says, waving his hands in the general direction of the cameras and news reporters. Their tour in India has already covered Delhi and Pune, where Marko says, “The crowd is terrific and sometimes it’s just crazy. We have always had the
best experiences playing in India.” As to why they named themselves Poets of the Fall was because they stumbled upon the name through many other choices and decided that it had a good ring to it. In Marko’s words, “We felt, all the three of us together, that this is certainly the name we are going to stick to.” And the name certainly has an impact. With the melancholic, theatrical rock label that their music carries off, the name certainly sticks. “We come from Finland where the music scene is very happening. But as a band, we don’t stick either with the metalheads or the pop rock bands. It’s almost like being an oddball,” Marko says. About their plans of hitting the studios for another album, Marko is uncertain. “We love touring and this year’s tours have been great indeed. I do not know about hitting the studios. We have no plan as of now.”

But then with Rocky S opening his store here in partnership, Tarun Tahiliani being the latest to join the bandwagon and Sabyasachi soon setting up his standalone store here as well, Hyderabadi fashion has just gone several steps up. What’s even better is that unlike earlier, designer stores
(multi-designer and exclusive ones) make sure that they stock up the latest designs. “As a store owner, I ensure I have the latest collection. We go to the fashion weeks and make sure we’ve got the designers’ latest collections for our clients at the store,” says Smita Shroff, owner, Elahe, who is soon going to set up Sabyasachi’s store. So what is it that is bringing top-notch fashion designers to the City? “Why not? The City has always had a culture of great luxury and people’s taste for luxury has been kind of ingrained. Besides, we’ve always liked to be at the forefront of things. So Hyderabad seemed like a great choice. “We’ve had some clients from here at our Mumbai store. This is a great time for the City to grow as a fashion market and it’s always nice to join the fray early on. It gives you a chance to learn and create a niche market for yourself. Besides, our clothes
here are well-appreciated. They are after all about their superior finishing,” says Tarun Tahiliani, who recently inaugurated his store in Banjara Hills.
What’s even better is that unlike earlier, designer stores (multidesigner and exclusive ones ) stock up the latest designs. Done up in shades of cream, the store boasts of some of Tarun’s best designs apart from Nawabi inspired jewellery and watches. “Tarun’s association with the City has been a long one. He’s had plenty of Hyderabadi brides and he even had an exposition here last year, which did very well. Most importantly, Hyderabad has the kind of lifestyle to support a store like this,” says Tina Tahiliani, who looks after the business aspect of her

brother’s stores. That Hyderabadi women are very refined and have very elegant tastes when it comes to fashion is something most people in the fashion industry firmly believe in. “There are a lot of women here who have great taste when it comes to fashion, but don’t just fly out every time they want to pick up designer wear. Our store will be perfect for them. Our store is also for the young Hyderabadi girls who are so particular about their drapes and colours. I’m sure my store

is going to do really well here,” explains Tarun. But will this influx of standalone designer stores spell trouble for the multi-designer stores in the City? “I don’t think so. There is space for everybody in the market. For instance, a multidesigner store offers clients variety while on the other hand a standalone store can have plenty of bridal designs unlike a multidesigner one. So one won’t eat into the other’s business, because there’s plenty of scope for both kinds of stores,” believes Smita. Giving credence to this seems to be Kimaya, one of most well known multi-designer stores from Mumbai, which is soon going to open a store in the City. “We have a lot of Hyderabadi clientele, especially from the Reddy community. So we did our studies and realised that the market here looks very promising for us. Setting up a store here is just our way of getting closer to our Hyderabadi clients. Besides, Hyderabadi women are a perfect balance of understated and bling, which is great when it comes to fashion,” says Pradeep Hirani, chairman, Kimaya Fashion Pvt Ltd, who will be inaugurating the store in the first week of September.

NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA
He is the link between those seperated by the Cold War game Kim’s Separated Family Union tries to bridge the gap between South and North Korea. There are no civilian mail or phone connections across the closely guarded inter-Korean border, and
many do not even know whether their loved ones are still alive. Sporadic reunions arranged by the two sides since 2000 have brought together only a fraction of those seeking news, and have been halted because of political tensions. Kim and his colleagues in a ninemember foundation called the Separated Family Union try to bridge the gap, using the postal systems of third countries or brokers. Kim sends about 70 to 80 letters and packages every year to North Koreans at the request of families in the South. It takes roughly 30 days for letters to arrive and another 30
A bitter cold story
I
n 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea and Soviet troops occupied north of the 38th parallel, while US troops took surrender south of it. This decision by allied armies soon became the basis for the division of Korea by the two superpowers, exacerbated by their inability to agree on the terms of Korean independence. The two Cold War rivals then established governments sympathetic to their own ideologies, leading to Korea's current division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea. The ensuing conflict between the two nations was largely a proxy war between the US and Russia.
days for a reply to come back. In the case of letters, Kim mails them from Japan, where he is based. But Tokyo restricts the contents of packages to the North to comply with UN sanctions, so those are sent through China. Brokers handle their passage through the Chinese postal system and are also used to track down long-lost family members. For the professional intermediaries who cross the border between China and North Korea, a home town is all that is necessary to discover whether relatives are still alive, and if so, their address. “Most letters don’t contain any secrets or criticism of the (North’s) communist regime because they are all subject to screening,” said Kim, speaking at the foundation’s office in Seoul. But sometimes letters cannot be sent by a public route, in which case Shim Goo-Seob, co-founder of the foundation, takes over and arranges for a broker to make a more unorthodox delivery. The document could be tied to a rock and thrown over a narrow section of the Yalu river border with China, or sneaked through in a container truck. Until a few years ago all postal traffic was one-way, with South Koreans looking for relatives in the North. But now many North Koreans are seeking family mem-
bers across the border through the brokers, Kim said. “The main reason is because they miss them, but partly it’s also because the brokers leak information that South Koreans are rich and can send necessities and money,” he said. “Relatives in the North ask us to send anything from rubber to used clothes, but what they want most is medicine for disease, mostly tuberculosis, and food to combat malnutrition.” Basic household items are also in demand. “Things that we have, like scissors and knives? They don’t have them,” said Kim. Brokers take about 30 percent commission if transferring money, and charge roughly 230,000 won ($203) to deliver a 20-kilo-
gram (44-pound) package through the Chinese post. Despite the high commission and the difficulties, families in the South keep sending packages because they make such a difference in the poverty-stricken North. “They (Northerners) always send letters saying the small efforts and money we’ve put in here has made a big difference there,” said Kim. “Southerners think they know how bad the situation is there, but it’s a whole lot worse than it appears. Things that are trivial to us here can be of great use there.” South Koreans who receive a letter from the North for the first time usually burst into tears out of pity at the plight of their relatives, he said.

ndhra Pradesh has more than 700 engineering colleges and is generating around 3 lakh engineers in different streams. Many industry experts say that only 10 per cent of the engineering graduates are employable and some of them even worry that IT industry will move away from the country, if the sector doesn’t provide quality human resource. It is not completely true that the students are not suitable to the industry. If that were the case, many industries like IT would not have boomed in the country. However, the role of educational institute is different from industrial human resource needs. Each industry has its own requirement and it is extremely difficult to tailor make students for all of these industries, said KV Vishnu Raju, chairman, Sri Vishnu Educational Society. The fundamentals are taught at university level either it is in US or in India. The students who develop strong fundamentals can understand and pick up industrial requirements easily at a later time, said Raju. “Technology is changing rapidly especially in industries like IT and electronics. This is necessitating colleges to be in
tuned with the industry and have regular interaction with them. For instance, we have recently started internships for second and third year students in our college. Where in the students work for the industry during their summer holidays and understand the skills required by the industry and will develop them overtime. Such kind of initiatives from the colleges will bridge the gap between what industry wants and what is being provided the curriculum,” he said. Industrialists from different sectors should also venture in to education, which will enable
The students who develop strong fundamentals can grasp industrial requirements easily at a later time. the industrial culture in the colleges. This will create quality and necessary employees for their self needs as well, he said. Talking about faculty, he said, “The quantity in human resource has also come at the cost of its quality. Not only the
private colleges, but also even some of the government colleges do not have sufficient faculties. The faculty are not being produced in proportion to the growing number of engineering students. The country is unable to produce sufficient PhD and even MTech graduates who can teach and train these engineering students. The colleges need more of these people for teaching in engineering colleges.” When asked whether the education system is aimed at overall personality development, Raju said, “Students are going through tremendous pressure in clearing the entrance exams. Most of their childhood, especially from Class VIII to Class XII, spent aimed at these exams. The overall personality development is compromised by not playing games and by not participating in extracurricular activities. The creativity of the child is being killed in the race for these entrance exams. “However, at least in engineering colleges, there is need to bring in humanities courses. For instance, In US or in the UK, the student should do minimum number of non-engineering subjects like history or philosophy,” “Science and arts go hand in hand and will be essential to the overall development of the student,” he adds.

Air India to carry ads on planes NEW DELHI: Flag carrier Air India, reeling under accumulated losses and loans of around `67,520 crore, is planning to carry advertisements on its aircraft to mobilise additional revenue. “We have plans to allow advertisers to put up ads on the aircraft. Ads can be placed on the tail or the hull of the aircraft,” a highly placed source in the national airline told IANS.
The airline is looking to earn around `500,000 to `20 lakh per aircraft per month for an advertisement. More than one advertisement it hopes would raise the monthly earnings to `40 lakh per aircraft. Air India currently has 111 aircraft in its fleet and this revenue is expected to ease the carrier’s debts. The airline is, however, more bullish on the in-flight

advertisements and claims that it has received many queries for the same. “The passenger may or may not see the advertisement on the aircraft body. But the passenger will definitely see it on the panels, bins, screens, pillows and seat covers.” The airline is also mulling creating advertisement space on its boarding passes and bag tags.

A third way to generate revenue is allowing in-flight sampling of products by consumer durables companies. The aviation ministry has meanwhile asked the airline not to provide any free ride to any government-run promotion schemes and said the stateowned units have to go through a bidding process for their advertisement campaigns. e was a hardened criminal who had resisted all attempts at rehabilitation — till a renowned dancer visited the Presidency Jail here and began a therapy session. Today, he has even appeared opposite awardwinning actress Rituparna Sengupta in Muktodhara, a film loosely based on his life and transformation. Nigel Akkara, 34, was initially reluctant, but dancer Alokananda Ray and then IG (prisons) BD Sharma convinced him to be part of the activity, under a government-sponsored
move to reform prison inmates through cultural engagement. Ray decided to stage the dance-drama “Valmiki Pratibha” by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The actors were selected from among jailbirds, and Nigel played the lead role of dacoit Ratnakar who transforms into sage Valmiki. That play transformed Nigel. It also helped in opening new avenues for him following his release from prison in 2009 after serving a nine-year term. “I was mesmerised by the acceptance that I got after ‘Valmiki Pratibha’. looking at my past, I have wondered whether I really deserve such love and affection,” says Nigel, who now owns a cleaning and security agency and employs several former jailmates. With “Valmiki Pratibha” becoming a rage, Nigel’s acting skills and his real-life transformation became more commonly known. “After ‘Valmiki Pratibha’, a lot of people came to know me. After I was released, I wanted to do something on my own. But though people took pity on me and asked for cleaning services, they didn’t trust me. They remained suspicious,” he says. He was determined that fellow jailbirds should not suffer a similar fate after release. “After lot of hard work I had set up my small company where most of the employees are former convicts. I want them to lead a normal life,” he says. Nigel’s big break came when he got the chance to play the lead role opposite Sengupta in Muktodhara. “The film is not completely autobiographical; there is a good bit of fiction mixed in. But the biggest thing I got after acting in the movie was acceptance and recognition as a

Although Nigel’s macho looks and acting skills have won him a following and he now has directors knocking on his doors with offers, he does not want his silver screen success to go to his head. “In the last few days I have received several offers that I have turned down. I want to keep acting as a side profession. My main aim is to establish my own busi-
ness. That way I can provide more former convicts with opportunities to lead normal lives,” he says. Muktodhara has completed over three weeks at the box office. It has received rave reviews and is minting money. Nigel, who wants to work with renowned directors such as Rituparano Ghosh and Srijit Mukherji, seeks to change the meaning of “freedom” for jail convicts. “Freedom should always come with peace of mind,” he says. Apart from employing former jailmates in his business, Nigel also runs a home for children of prisoners to provide them a good education. Almost all the children in the home study in renowned Englishmedium schools. However, he has now decided to close down the home and transfer them to various boarding schools as residents near the home have become aware of the identity of the students and are keeping them at arm’s length. “I thank society for giving me a second chance. I personally feel that someone who comes out of prison deserves a second chance. You can’t punish a person for the same sin twice,” Nigel told. IANS.

About 19,320 children went missing between 2009 January and August 15, 2012. NEW DELHI: Twelve children disappear in Delhi every day, with missing girls outnumbering boys. A total of 3,171 children 1,652 girls and 1,519 boys — went missing in the capital this year till August 15 and police are yet to trace 985 of them, according to official statistics. But police say the rate of missing children has come down marginally this year compared to last year. According to statistics, on an average 14 children went missing in a day in 2011, while it has come down to 12 in 2012. Last year, a total of 5,111 — 2,665 girls and 2,446 boys — went missing out of which 981 are yet to be located.
The last two years have seen the number of missing girls surpassing boys. The number of untraced girls has also been on the higher side. “No specific reason can be attributed to this,” a police official said. He said children, who were traced cited various reasons for their disappearance, including being misguided by people, maltreatment by parents, pressure of studies, unsound mind, going on own will, elopement and human trafficking. According to figures, a total of 19,320 children went missing between 2009 January and August 15, 2012, out of which 3,305 are yet to be traced. PTI

REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
For Tea Party movement Issac is a sign of change Tropical Storm Isaac is being portrayed as a symbol of big changes ahead after November’s election, when GOP vows to reclaim the White House. TAMPA: The Republican National Convention here will be shortened one day by bad weather, but activists from the conservative Tea Party movement heralded advancing Tropical Storm Isaac as a timely symbol of big changes ahead after November’s election, when they vow to reclaim the White House. “We are looking at a hurricane here in Florida,” said Michele Bachmann, a Tea Party founder and conservative member of the House of Representatives, late Sunday to a rally Christian conservatives and Tea Party faithful on the margins of the convention. “We’re looking at a political hurricane,” she said in a speech electrifying her supporters. “We’re looking at a spiritual hurricane,” she said, further whipping up the crowd. The Tea Party — a powerful faction Republican faction responsible in large part for the return of the House of Representatives to Republican control in 2010 — is to play a relatively small role at this week’s convention, which has been curtailed from a four-day gathering to just three here in the Gulf Coast city of Tampa. But they made a show of force at the afternoon and evening of rallies and prayer meetings Sunday at a local mega-church — an event meant to rouse the support of this most conservative of the Republican party’s faithful.

“It’s time for each of us to show up and suit up and stand up,” Bachmann exhorted the crowd, to thunderous applause. The meeting here, several miles away from the official Republican convention events downtown, provided a needed outlet for conservatives who have always been lukewarm toward former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who this week will formally named the party’s presidential nominee. The pre-convention gathering at The River at Tampa Bay
Church, which was billed as a “unity rally,” gave conservatives a chance to celebrate their considerable clout in the Republican party after scarcely three years’ existence. At a different forum earlier Sunday however, another Tea Party favorite was in a far less conciliatory mood. Texas Congressman Ron Paul, a perennial presidential contender, including his failed bid earlier this year, led a rally of devoted followers Sunday, in sounding almost defiant as he exhorted his followers to contin-
ue to press for greater change from within the party. Paul, 77, who is leaving Congress at the end of this year, was not given a speaking role at this year’s convention, despite being one of the Republicans’ most prominent figures. “Believe me, we will get in the tent because we will become the tent eventually,” he said. With the energy that we have, it seems to me they would be begging and pleading for us to come into the party,” he said at a rally in a separate venue that preceded Tea Party rally.

Behind her, the first ghoulish video image materializes: an elderly man, slumped in the driver’s seat of a blue delivery van which has skidded off the road, its windows shot through, the camera swinging in to focus on streams of blood. The reporter Azaz said that residents here “committed criminal acts and [were] killed in the name of freedom.” The television report also accused these “terrorists” and “mercenaries” of responsibility for what appears to be the single worst atrocity of the 17month uprising: the killing of between 300 and 600 people, most of them civilians, in a fourday assault on the opposition stronghold of Daraya, located five miles southwest of Damascus. But those piles of dead bodies, twisted into inhuman shapes, buried beneath bright blankets, charred beyond recognition, and slumped in the streets and doorways were not killed by the rebels of the Free Syrian Army, survivors told GlobalPost. have often wondered if it’s a believer or an atheist who is better for Earth. And, with the amassed wisdom of several decades, I now declare it is, of course, the non believer — be it an agonistic or an atheist. Therefore, I watch with alarm that atheism or non-belief has been declining in the developing countries, mainly because of the fall of communism. Conversely, unbelief has been growing in the First World but, but not enough to counter the rapid growth of believers in the countries that we call the Third World. Since the ‘60s atheists have been declining in world population. A study by Britannica says atheists are now 2.4 per cent of the global populace. It was some 10 per cent in the ‘50s. Agnostics (who believe the world is beyond the limited sensory realm of man but believes there’s a spirit) and those who are indifferent to religion are also somewhat on the decline. They are now 11.5 per cent from 20 per cent.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
For South Asia it means a lot. Believers tend to fall prey to religious bigotry which we see today in Pakistan and many other Islamic countries. Believers also are easily bamboozled by a
wily priesthood. In India much of the social discrimination and community crimes are associated with religious beliefs (like Sati) and are justified by the priesthood. While, not surprisingly, India does not have data of believers and non-believers (it never had data on anything, anyway), it is believed by Rationalists Associations that the country has less than two per cent population who publicly admit to be nonbelievers. Many atheists are coy, too. For instance, AK Antony is an atheist but he would never admit it in public for fear of reprisals from the majority — the believers. Atheist Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru could do little for India while he infused a bit of enthusiasm for ‘scientific temper’ in social life. But the Communists had this advantage of professing atheism publicly but now they are so compelled to allow believers a big say just for the vote bank. For example, in Kerala, which gave Communists the first toe-hold in free India, the Communists changed their tactics four decades ago asking the cadres to intrude into temple management so that they could hold a sway over them. But their strategy worked only with Hindu temples.
WEST GROWS OPPOSITE!
A pleasant surprise is in the developed West. The number of atheists is rising, though not phenomenally. The First World will probably become a larger part of the world’s total population, so atheism may be headed towards a long term recovery.
Greg Paul, an independent researcher, wrote in the Washington Post last September: “The future of American faith is grim as the nation undergoes the secularization process that has already pretty much wrecked the churches in the rest of the West. So what will happen to American society as it too becomes as non-theistic as, say, Canada? My next essay will show how the loss of religion is not the big social/moral deal many make it out to be.”
DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ATHEISTS
According to a 2005 Eurostat Eurobarometer poll, France topped the list of atheists with 30 per cent, followed by Czech and Belgium with 33 and 27 per cent respectively. Several studies proved Sweden to be the most atheist nation in the world
(agnostics included). Leaders say secularism flourishes when people become non-believers. Which in other word translates into this: a non-believer tends to be more humane than the religious, whether you like it or not.
TAILEND
“I do not understand how any woman on the face of the planet can call herself religious with the knowledge that these atrocities are being committed to women in the name of religion,” Kelly Quantrill, an astronomy enthusiast of South America, wrote in her blog, Waxing Apocalyptic. She wants all women to be either agnostics or atheists. You say man will subdue you? Well, how and for how long. Nature has chosen female over male for survival of the species, doesn’t it? Man is dispensable syringe but woman is essential drug, got it? The writer works for Postnoon.
EDITORIALS Stop this land mafia Nato may have to delay exit
T
he brazen way realty mafia tried to encroach on 3000 square yard of government land in Azad Chandrasekhar Nagar in Addagutta in the City the other day reveals naked corruption and the inability of the police and other authorities to check it. More serious is the news that the local police inspector tried to shoo away the Tehsildar’s complaint. In any set up that respects law, the inspector should have been summarily dismissed from service because his refusal to accept the complaint from a revenue authority is indicative of his complicity in the matter, as the Tehsildar pointed out. That the government don’t mark its property is one reason for this kind of incidents. Loss of government land is a serious matter. It’s a tragedy, as it amounts to denying the young generation its right to development. Already the city is bereft of any space for recreation and sports. The government must immediately take action against the police inspector and the goondas that came to appropriate the land, or else recurrence of such incidents cannot be contained.

The beheading which included two women happened at a village in southern region which is plagued by Taliban insurgency. The recent spate of killings may be taken as a sign of the Taliban making plans to come back strong.

fter making waves in the society with its work, Street Cause an NGO comprising of college students is spreading its wings. Its new division Street Cause Gold came into force in May and now is a 75 member-strong group. Apart from college students, this division of the NGO has corporate employees, independent businessmen and alumni of Street Cause as part of the group. One of the founding members of the NGO, Anup Kumar Thati who owns a construction company says, “There are many restrictions collegians have to face while working for Street Cause. A student who is in their fourth year cannot be officially part of the Street Cause activities and since it is a student-based NGO, there is no question of being part of it after college. I am an alumnus of CBIT and while at the college, I was part of one event that they had organised. We had visited HIV positive patients in ARK home at Sainikpuri and spent the day with them. It was an amazing experience to spent time with the kids at the home. Since then, while doing my masters, I was in touch with the Street Cause members and given them advices and help. There are many collegians who want to work for the underprivileged for a longer time and through college it is an impossible task. Street Cause Gold is the answer we came up with.

Calling to keep in touch
Whatsapp saves the day
Ban keeps my gf away
It was difficult at the beginning when the limit was five. I am messaging person and do not like calling much. But, I had to call a lot of people during this time. But now it is much more easier since the limit is being increased to 20.
This ban did not affect me much thanks to whatsapp and Facebook messenger available on the phone. And moreover these applications are free. However, this is only for those who have internet on their phone. Others are having a tough time dealing with this.
This is an ineffective way adopted by the government to stop the North-eastern crisis. Thank god for BBM and whats app but the whole world doesn’t know about it. Twenty messages a day keeps my girlfriend away and socialising becomes a problem.

CAFFEINE AND HEALTH
Intoxicated by your daily cuppa
Many of us cannot think of a day without our heady cup of coffee. But excess caffeine may result in a caffeine overdose which leads to intoxication.

“E
nough is enough, that’s your fourth cup of coffee in the last two hours,” exclaimed Ritika’s friends as she walked back to her desk with her hot espresso just the way she liked itstrong, no milk and no sugar. Whenever her friends mentioned that it’s not good for her, Ritika always laughed it off. For the last few weeks she had
been feeling slightly irritable and restless. After weeks of ignoring the problem she finally visited her doctor.
WHAT IS CAFFEINE? Caffeine chemically is a compound that acts as a stimulant as well as a diuretic. While small doses of the compound are fine, excessive amounts can be a cause of concern. People usually associate caffeine only with coffee. According to Dr Roshan Jain, senior consultant psychiatrist, Apollo Hospital, Bangalore, caffeine can also be found in soft drinks, tea and chocolates. Caffeine content in coffee is higher .”

feine-related psychiatric disorders. This includes caffeine-induced anxiety disorder, caffeine intoxication, caffeine-induced sleep disorders and caffeine-induced disorders (NOS). It is said that around 300mg of caffeine (approximately three regular cups of coffee) is the maximum amount of coffee one can consume. According to Dr Jain, “Caffeine intoxication is caused by excess amounts of caffeine. People drink coffee as it stimulates the mind and keeps them alert. It also helps people distress. When a person has excess amounts of coffee the alert mind crosses a threshold resulting in symptoms such as a feeling of restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, will have a problem sleeping as the mind is awake and people who are predisposed to anxiety attacks will notice that their condition accelerates.” Talking about the symptoms, Dr Jain explains that clinically if patients come with symptoms such as a racing heartbeat, nervousness, restlessness, palpitations and insomnia doctors look at the possible stimulant responsible for this. People who consume
excessive caffeine also feel the urge to urinate frequently. There are three common stimulants – alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. The other possible problems include headaches, rambling speech and thought, gastrointestinal problems, depression etc.
WITHDRAWAL As there is no specific treatment per se, cutting down one’s consumption of caffeine is important. Many people may experience withdrawal symptoms. Dr Roshan says, “These may be physical and psychological symptoms. Physical symptoms could imply feeling restless or very tired and in terms of psychological symptoms it could include an urge for coffee as they associate caffeine with relaxation and similar activities. These symptoms are overcome over time. One could start taking a healthy alternative instead. Slowly they will not feel the need for excessive caffeine.” According to Dr Jain, caffeine disorders are common in people who have desk jobs, IT professionals and students as it helps them work or study long hours.

HealthVault is a Microsoft-branded application that is meant to be a repository for users to store theirs and their family's health information in a single, reliable place. Users can get rid of the notebook and store their family's medical record numbers, track prescriptions and notate any allergies or chronic conditions.
Gangrene is the death of tissue in part of the body. It happens when a body part loses its blood supply. This may happen from injury, an infection, or other causes. You have a higher risk for gangrene if you have; a serious injury, blood vessel disease, diabetes, suppressed immune system (for example, from HIV or chemotherapy) or surgery. The symptoms depend on the location and cause of the gangrene.
The brain itself cannot feel pain. While the brain might be the pain centre when you cut your finger or burn yourself, the brain does not have pain receptors. The brain is surrounded by loads of tissues, nerves and blood vessels that are receptive to pain and can give a pounding headache.
James Lind was a Scottish physician. He was a pioneer of naval hygiene in the Royal Navy. By conducting the first ever clinical trial, he developed the theory that citrus fruits cured scurvy. He argued for the benefits of better ventilation aboard naval ships, the improved cleanliness of sailors' bodies, clothing and bedding, and below-deck fumigation. He also proposed that fresh water could be obtained by distilling sea water.

Job stress doubles diabetes risk in women
Drink green tea, kick the butt, says study A new study cites how researchers used custom-developed cigarettes with components of green tea as filters in a bid to treat addiction to smoking.

rink green tea to get over the nicotine urge, say Chinese researchers . A recent study titled ‘A Revolutionary Approach for the Cessation of Smoking’, published in Science China Life Sciences, a peer-reviewed openaccess journal, cites how researchers used custom-developed cigarettes with components of green tea as filters in a bid to treat addiction to smoking. Phinse Philip, a lecturer in the Community Oncology Division of the Malabar Cancer Centre, said pharmacotherapy such as nicotine replacement therapy had generally been found effective in getting smokers to give up the habit. “A majority of users smoke as it purportedly gives them some form of relaxation. The oral intake of the amino acid LTheanine, uniquely found in green tea, is known to have anti-stress effects and acts as a relaxing agent. The study conducted in China shows that green tea may be an alternative to quit this addictive habit,” Phillip said. Even though there has been a nationwide ban on smoking in public since 2008, it continues to be rampant in public places in Kerala, including bus stops and cinema halls. Around 21.9 per cent of Kerala’s population is addicted to smoking and in the process, makes itself vulnerable to a wide variety of diseases such as cancer, heart ailments and osteoporosis. Thomas Varughese, head of
surgical oncology and reconstructive surgery at Kochi’s Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre, said drinking green tea after quitting smoking completely could contribute to reversing the possibility of lung cancer. “Green tea, which is rich in antioxidants, can help in restoring the oxidant/antioxidant imbalance among those who have quit tobacco-use completely, both smoking and smokeless, provided they have used it long enough to cover the impact of the period of use,”

OTTAWA: Work stress doubles the risk of developing diabetes for women who have little or no control over what they do on the job, according to a new study. The same is not true for men. “Men and women react differently to workplace stress,” Peter Smith, lead author of the nine-year study by researchers at the Institute for Work and Health and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto, told AFP. Smith suggested that women under stress may be “more likely to turn to foods with higher fat and sugar content than men,” as one possible explanation for the results. The primary reasons outlined in the study for the increased risk for women are the disruptions of neuroendocrine and immune system functioning and increased or prolonged cortisol and sympathetic hormone release in reaction to stress; and changes in diet and energy expenditure, possibly as coping mechanisms. The researchers followed 7,443 women working in Canada’s Ontario province with no previous diagnoses for diabetes. Their results, published this week in the journal of Occupational Medicine, showed that 19 per cent of cases of diabetes in women are due to low job control. AFP

Teach your teen to understand new experiences tional development is also taking place by leaps and bounds. In addition, social peer pressure on them mounts and they are also in the throes of physical, sexual and moral development. As they turn into adults, all these developmental stages will be completed. Thus, teens often don’t know why they are feeling what they are feeling. For adolescent girls, the number of psychological
changes they experience can make them feel overwhelmed. They begin to experience a wider range of emotions, without the full ability to understand them (since understanding comes with experience). This means that teenagers will feel everything at a more intense level than before. In addition, since it’s the first time they are experiencing some of these feelings (eg. First crush,
failure at school, etc) the feelings seem more real and powerful than they should to the adults around them. ‘Act then think’ is often what they follow since their brain development pushes for risk taking adventurous acts. To help a teen, it is important to help the teen understand that what they are experiencing is normal. Offer them comfort and support and let them express their emotions without asking for
an explanation of why they are feeling that way, if they don’t know the answer themselves. Talk with them about how to manage their emotions. Let them know that this time will pass and if it feels like things are not normal, then seek professional help. The writer is a counselling psychologist at the Hyderabad Academy of Psychology. hiney Ahuja is calmer and introspective after his unforeseen tryst behind the bars — and that’s because the actor strongly believes in learning from all experiences, bitter or sweet. The one positive thing in his tough phase, he says, has been the growth in the warmth of the industry members and his fans towards him. One would think his fraternity and fans would have become averse to his popularity, especially after he was hounded by accusations of rape, but Shiney says “there’s a lot of warmth and love”. “Irrespective of what has been sometimes reported or said, whenever I have gone amongst people, their reactions have been pretty much the same that was earlier. Now, in fact, there is a relationship that they feel they have with me,” Shiney said in a candid interview. “There is so much of warmth and love. They (fans) keep saying they are waiting for me to come back in another great film and are looking forward to another great performance. These are the kind of things I get to hear,” he added. Shiney was arrested in June 2009 following charges of rape, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation levelled by his maid, charges that he denied.

— only he is more careful about choosing the right words. The actor is now working towards resurrecting his Bollywood career. And he says his friends in the film industry have been extremely supportive to help him regain his stand. “The perception is very different for people who know you as a person. For them, you are a person and not a product. So people who know me, they believe in me; so that’s the reason there is no change in their perception at all. In fact, now there is much more warmth which wasn’t there earlier,” the 38 year-old said. “I feel I am very fortunate because I have some good friends like Sudhir Mishra and Anurag Basu from the film industry who have encouraged me in the past as well. KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN IN CRISIS
ATP players mull Oz Open boycott The move would be more about boosting payouts to those who exit in early rounds and the struggle of players outside the world’s top 60 or so to make ends meet. NEW YORK: ATP Tour players are considering a boycott of next January’s Australian Open in a bid to gain a higher percentage of Grand Slam event revenues for themselves, the Sunday Times of London reported. The move would be less about the top prize earners as much as it would be about boosting payouts to those who exit in early rounds and the struggle of players outside the world’s top 60 or so
to make ends meet. Players pay much of their own expenses and travel. Those without well-paying sponsorship deals must still make a global trek to sustain their careers. An ATP players meeting, including ATP players council president Roger Federer (left), was staged Friday in New York ahead of Monday’s start of the US Open.
Tennis Australia confident SYDNEY: Tennis Australia said on Monday it was confident players would not boycott the Australian Open over a pay disagreement, but it was taking the threat seriously. INDIA’S DAY OUT
India colts, seniors reap well-deserved rewards TWELFTH MAN
Babu Kalyanpur
I
t was a Super Sunday for India in the playing fields of Hyderabad and Townsville, Australia. The touring New Zealand side were spun into a defeat while the Under-19 team retained the World Cup. There is a lot of significance behind both these victories. For the senior men, this win was important after the string of defeats in the last 10 Tests. It also got them off to a perfect start in the new season with tougher teams in the offing in the next few months. Refreshingly, India turned in the screw when required and won comfortably. They won the big points by being relentless. Too often in the past, India let go
The touring Kiwi side were spun into a defeat while the Under-19 team retained the World Cup the initiative through bad bowling or fielding. And removing the lower order was always a major problem. Despite the constant threat of rain, India clinched the match with a day to spare. The spinners were simply outstanding, with the Hyderabad wicket offering them bounce. Ravinchandran Ashwin must have been a bit nervous with the recall of Harbhajan Singh to the Twenty-20 squad. His bowling seemed to have lost a bit of zing after a good start. But his match-winning 12 for 85 has put all doubts to rest. Cheteshwar Pujara grabbed his chance and played an important knock at the crucial No 3 position. What made his innings special was the temperament he displayed. He batted with patience, was technically sound and willing to play a big innings. His backfoot play was excellent and this will help his batting abroad. Suresh Raina disappointed again. But he deserves a longer run. Too many Indian players have been cast by the wayside due to
lack of opportunities. Good batsmen like Mohammed Kaif and Yuvraj Singh spring to the mind. In this regard, it is hoped that Yuvraj, if fit, is also fast-tracked into the Test side this season. He deserves an uninterrupted run to cement a place. New Zealand need to do a lot of soul-searching. They have not learnt their lessons after the humiliation in the West Indies. Their inability to play spin was cruelly exposed. Their static approach to batting while under pressure proved their downfall. Only Brendon McCullum and Kane Wiliamson applied themselves and showed how spin can be played. But their contributions were insignificant as the rest, bar James Franklin in the first innings, were just swept away. Flight is key armoury for a spinner. Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha used this weapon to good effect while claiming 18 of the 20 wickets that fell. And it was flight which played a big part for India’s Under-19 side. Their two spinners, Baba Aparajith and Harmeet Singh, clever varied their flight to confuse the opposition. India did not start off well. The batting did not fire until the semi-finals. However, the bowling efforts were stupendous. The pace attack of Sandeep Sharma and Ravikant Singh was outstanding. They showed admirable line, length and swing. India went into the final as underdogs. Their opponents, Australia, had done superbly throughout the tournament. But India turned it on at the right moment. They got early wickets before letting the initiative slip. The target of 225 was a stiff one. Losing four wickets for 97 in the run chase was disheartening. But captain Unmukt Chand scored an inspiring century to guide India through. Chand, like his predecessor Virat Kohli, has shown a lot of potential. So have Aparajith and Harmeet. They are now ready for higher things. The selectors must take notice and ease them into the next level as soon as possible. India’s cricket is undergoing a change. The time is right for new blood to be infused. Chand, Aparajith and Harmeet, if neglected, may pick up bad habits and stunt their own growth. Develop them now and India’s future will be in good hands.
The Test match between India and New Zealand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium had its share of spectacular moments. Our photographer captured some of the finest moments in the match.

ON SUPER SUNDAY ANIL KUMAR

We’ll rectify mistakes and come back strong HYDERABAD: Bamboozled by the spinners, New Zealand suffered a crushing defeat in the first Test but skipper Ross Taylor (right) said they would rectify the mistakes and comeback strong in the second Test. “I guess any time you are bowled out for 160 both times, you have got to be disappointed. We have three to four days to rectify that. Obviously spin is an area we need to work on and come back harder and stronger in Bangalore,” Taylor said after their heavy defeat against India, here today. Taylor said more than anything they need to be strong mentally while negotiating spinners. “Come Bangalore, we need to be as positive as possible, clear the mind, trust our defence, but also find a way of scoring runs as well. It’s about rotating the strike, finding your single options. We are not big players of using our feet, so we need to create lengths in different ways. In the next game, I am sure we will do that. “Obviously a little bit of technique but I think most of it is probably in the mind. Trusting your defence and trusting your attacking shots. When you get bogged down, it puts a lot of pressure on you and there was a lot of pressure going out there,” he said. Taylor praised the Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, who shared 18 wickets between them. “Ashwin bowled very well. Not only Aswhin, Ojha bowled very well and they bowled well in tandem. They put a lot of pressure on us, bowled in very good areas. “I guess when you enforce a follow on and have got a big total, you can have a lot of men around the bat and Dhoni did that. They bowled in the areas for long enough and reaped the
rewards.” Taylor was optimistic of drawing the series by winning the Bangalore Test, starting Friday. “We can still draw the series. That’s the good thing about a two-Test series. I thought Kane Williamson and Brendon applied themselves really well for a long period of time and showed that it can be done,” he said. Without DRS, New Zealand had to cope with Brendon McCullum’s dismissal when umpire Steve Davis overlooked a bat-pad decision. But Taylor was not critical of the poor umpiring decision. “That’s just cricket. Brendon didn’t mean to get out. Obviously no DRS. The umpires are human and make mistakes. It’s a part and parcel of cricket. “Obviously different parts of the world have different rules in different sports. It’s part and parcel coming to this part of the world.”

Real shocked by Getafe The result leaves the champions five points behind fierce rivals Barcelona after only two games of the new Spanish season. TIM HANLON MADRID: La Liga champions Real Madrid crashed to a shock 2-1 defeat at derby rivals Getafe on Sunday to leave them five points behind fierce rivals Barcelona after only two games of the new season. Madrid’s sluggish start has seen them held 1-1 at home to Valencia in the league followed by a 3-2 defeat by Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup first leg, before this latest slip-up. Gonzalo Higuain put Madrid ahead after 26 minutes but their weakness in the air returned to haunt them as Juan Valera headed Getafe level after 52 minutes. Madrid pressed forward looking for the winner but instead they were caught out at the back, with Abdelaziz Barrada scoring a 74th-minute winner. “It was a deserved win for Getafe but they didn’t do anything special and we were very poor,” said Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho. “It was an unacceptable performance and I don’t feel frustrated about the result because it was totally deserved.” Mourinho’s side will now look to get their season back on track in the second leg of the Super Cup on Thursday against
Barca, who beat Real Sociedad 2-1 earlier on Sunday. After a scrappy opening at Getafe, Madrid began to assert themselves and Mesut Ozil was guilty of a glaring miss in the 15th minute when he hit the bar with the goal gaping after a neat combination with Cristiano Ronaldo. Higuain had been picked ahead of Karim Benzema and he gave the visitors the lead from Angel Di Maria’s pass, using his strength to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball home. After the break, Getafe came out looking to attack and got their reward thanks to poor marking from Madrid, with the unmarked Valera heading in from a free-kick. The visitors pushed forward looking to regain the lead but instead Getafe struck again, with
Adrian Colunga going past Raul Albiol and setting up Barrada to score. Earlier, Lionel Messi struck a late brace to give Barcelona a victory over 10man Osasuna that took them to the top of the table on goal difference over Rayo Vallecano. “This is a difficult stadium to come to and Osasuna were on top form but we still had good chances,” said Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova, who was sent from the dug-out for dissent midway through the second half. “I told the linesman that there was a free-kick and I was told not to complain,” he explained. “Now we know what to expect from this referee.” Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes prevented Osasuna from taking the lead inside
the first minute as he palmed away a close-range effort from Alvaro Cejudo, who had easily skipped past Gerard Pique. The Catalans began to find openings, with Andres Iniesta firing over and Cristian Tello hitting the post from 25 yards, but it was Osasuna who snatched the lead on the break.
Spanish Liga results on Sunday Osasuna 1 (Llorente 17) Barcelona 2 (Messi 76, 80) Getafe 2 (Valera 53, Barrada 75) Real Madrid 1 (Higuain 27) Granada 1 (Mikel Rico 36) Sevilla 1 (Negredo 44) Valencia 3 (Soldado 11, 28, Feghouli 41) Deportivo La Coruna 3 (Aguilar 38, 59, Pizzi 76pen)
Roland Lamah sent a deep cross from the left wing that found Joseba Llorente -- on loan from Real Sociedad -- and he squeezed the ball in at the far post. The late game between Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna proved to be a thrilling affair, with visitors Depor rallying from 3-1 down at half-time to secure a 3-3 draw. Elsewhere, Sevilla drew 1-1 at Granada.
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Skrtel goes from zero to hero Martin Skrtel scored a brilliant goal and then delivered a horrific back pass to Pepe Reina that allowed Carlos Tevez to draw Man City level. IAN WHITTELL LIVERPOOL: Martin Skrtel, scorer of Liverpool’s opening goal, gifted Premier League champions Manchester City their second equaliser, and a point, in an absorbing 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday. The Liverpool defender had performed superbly until the 80th minute when, under pressure from Edin Dzeko, he inexplicably played the ball back directly to Carlos Tevez (right), who rounded Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina and slotted
in his 100th goal in English football to share the points. But the consolation for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, still searching for his first league victory since taking charge of the Reds, was that this was a much improved display following last week’s 3-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion. Anfield had an air of the big occasion about it for Rodgers’s home league bow, not least of all because the manager handed a full debut to teenage winger Raheem Stering.
Wenger believes in life after Persie Van Persie scored 37 goals last term but left to join Manchester United in a reported £24 million move. IAN BAKER STOKE-ON-TRENT: Arsene Wenger (above) insists Arsenal will find a way to replace Robin van Persie despite being held to a second straight goalless draw, by Stoke, at the start of the Premier League season. Star striker van Persie scored 37 goals in all competitions last term but left to join top-flight rivals Manchester United in a reported £24 million move.
Wenger saw his side struggle in the attacking third of the field against a determined Stoke at the Britannia. Wenger saw his side struggle in the attacking third of the field against a determined Stoke at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday but remains confident that Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Gervinho, supported by attacking midfielder Santi Cazorla, will eventually all come good. “The understanding was missing,” said Wenger. “One month ago Cazorla and Podolski did not know each other. There is work to be done. There is potential but something is missing. “I am very positive about my team. We haven’t scored but we played against two units that defended very well. If you want to convince we’ve lost an exceptional player you are wasting your time.”
