CBI impact: service providers get tough Procedural delays by service providers are proving to be a block in solving for urgent cases, where loss of time could prove fatal. Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com

N
ow, the police are facing problems with service providers of different networks, who demur at providing call data on demand, thanks to the fear created by the CBI joint director Laxmi Naryana's call history linking to a woman journalist that raised a storm. The CBI official's call history was allegedly pinched by the Nacharam police inspector Srinivas Rao. Service providers till then had no hesitation helping the police with information but now they demand in writing from the deputy commissioner of police. This procedural delay is

Susheela, widow of P Satyanarayana, an agriculturist of Puddur in RR district and her son P Mallesh have allegedly poisoned themselves to death after mounting debts made their life impossible, police report. Investigating officer of Chenguma, Mohd Maqsood Ali said, the tragedy had befallen the farmer family after the household head Satyanarayana committed suicide a few years back following farm failure and consequent debts. P Susheela, 50, bravely faced the uncertain life with
four children to take care of. She too was a farm-hand. However, the educational expenditure of her children was becoming a big burden and she was driven to desperation of late. It is said that out of frustration, Mallesh who demanded money for his college studies, had used filthy language while quarrelling with her mother for money. Susheela, said to have been shocked to the core, consumed poison. She was shifted to hospital but on the way she died. A contrite son too consumed poison and died. The double tragedy has shocked Srigayapally village of Puddur mandal, police said.
Nararayana police top brass conducted a meeting with government decided to give password to superintendent of police in each district and he will be responsible for its safety. “We don’t have any problem if SP is given password because
we don’t do any illegal work,” remarked inspector of police Asif Nagar J Narsaiah. But, the Task Force police who must sprint to action when cases break are put in a quandary. Restrictions make their works delayed, the Central Zone Task Force inspector Ch Srinivas admitted so much but he said so far the police had not a major problem on this count. Additional inspector of Musheerabad Mohd Riyazuddin regretted losing good camaraderie with the service providers. “Earlier we used to get helps from the service providers without much problem but after the case of joint director CBI, it had become difficult. Every misuse restricts work, he observed.

Bridging the divide The inspection by minister for Municipal Authority revealed that civic work was being delayed due to lack of co-ordination between departments. Md NIZAMUDDIN nizamuddin.a@postnoon.com
T
he minister for Municipal Authority and Urban Development is trying hard to bridge the divide and the inconsistencies in coordination between various departments that usually cause delays in execution of projects. After inspecting various works taken up in the West Zone by the GHMC in collaboration with HMWS&SB in the last six months, the minister found that the delay was due to a clear lack of coordination between the two departments. The projects related with roads, widening of nallahs and pipelines have been delayed for long. The minister directed the top officials to take up the matter and solve them immediately.
The team visited and inspected various areas from Indu Projects (Malaysian Township), Moosapet junction to Goods shed, Hitec City railway station, Hafeezpet fly over, Madinaguda and Chandanagar. During inspection, the minister interacted with senior officials of both the departments and asked them to submit a detailed report about the various issues that are responsible for the delay in executing the work. He further
directed them to speed up the works. He also asked them to raise their problems so that he could take proper decisions and work is completed on priority basis. Elaborating on the issue, MT Krishna Babu, GHMC commissioner, said that the main purpose of the visit is to sort out inter departmental issues like major link roads to be developed under Greater Hyderabad Development Programme (GHDP). The projects involving both the departments like removing bottle necks, laying of roads, pipelines, road widening, removal of encroachments near nallahs, could not be completed on time. He further stated that the minister has given directions to both the departments to coordinate and to take up the work immediately.

THINGS WE LEARNED TODAY
The column that teaches everyone something new about the way the City functions.
1
Waste management for a better future. Solid waste management can help generate thousands of jobs and also electricity. This is what we could call management at its best.
2
A good laugh can break any kind of barrier. Comedian Shazia Mirza’s visit to Pakistan where she saw veiled women sitting with their husband and laughing at a joke show that everyone loves a good laugh.
3
Till the blame games continue, we will suffer. The burning of leaves and plastic is proving to be a health hazard. It’s time citizens and GHMC come together to resolve the issue.
4
It’s time we raise our voices against power cuts. During summer it’s the water shortage and during monsoons, it’s the excess water. Something needs to be done. More power to the people, we say.
5
Talent needs to be nurtured not disorganised views. How do we expect our players to bring laurels for our country if we continue to treat them this way?

A
forthcoming chess tournament for women recently carried an announcement asking its players to bring their own chess sets for participation. Shocking though it may seem, this has been the current trend in chess tournaments organised by private and government chess players’ associations. Chess players and people within the Hyderabad chess players fraternity vent their ire over such associations and say that this is not the first time a tournament of this kind is being undertaken. Siddharth Rai, a FIDE rated chess player said, “There are so many things wrong with these tournaments. Their game format, venue, facilities for players, system of rating, everything is wrong from point one. They charge hefty registration fees that can be anything from `300 to `500 and yet we are treated with such disrespect.
Siddharth Rai chess player Would a cricket player be asked to get his own set of stumps for a State level tournament?” he asks. Prashant Narayan, chess enthusiast says, “The game needs to evolve in the City in terms of encouragement. These incidents tend to happen because it is not a sports person’s initiative but a business plan to make money. The fact
that they are asking players to get their own chess sets is nonsensical and very demeaning towards the game and players.” When Postnoon got in touch with Anand Naik, one of the organisers, he said, “ We generally ask players to get their own chess sets as we cannot estimate the number of players turning up for a tournament. We are ready to provide chess sets but
we have no idea as to how many players will actually turn up.” While the organisers fumbled on the accountability of the funds raised through registration fees and as to why they were unable to procure chess sets for players, the chess fraternity within the City continues to suffer at the hands of men trying to make money out of sports.

Indira to checkmate YSR; new Congress tricks! In a tragic-comic scene, the crestfallen Congress is trying to resurrect the charisma of Indira Gandhi to exorcise the ghost of YSR in welfare schemes. INKESHAF AHMED ahmed.m@postnoon.com
It’s a great move by our CM. Indira Gandhi was a crowd puller. The promotional campaign of Indiramma Baata will definitely have an impact on weaker sections.
E
xhausted of all tricks and not sure of the votecatching value of the present Congress leaders, the ruling party has fallen back on the good old Indira.
CM’S PET PROJECT
Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who recently launched his pet project — Indiramma Baata in East Godavari district has launched an innovative advertisement to publicise his mass-contact programme. The advertisement prominently displays a picture of the charismatic leader Indira Gandhi addressing public gatherings and interacting with various groups during her hey days. The advertisement is being aggressively aired by all news television channels since the last few days. The ad depicts all the welfare programmes launched during the YSR regime between 2004 and 2009. But the entire ad campaign is seen as an attempt of the ruling Congress to scrap the name of former CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy from its welfare programmes. The State government
Abid Rasool Khan APCC gen. secretary CM Kiran Kumar Reddy speaks to locals as a part of Indiramma Baata being held in East Godavari district.
strongly feels that a majority in AP still considers these programmes to be YSR’s brainchild. While Congress leaders welcome the initiative, the opposition YSRC says its prediction that YSR’s name would be scrapped from the welfare programmes associated with him is now coming true. APCC general secretary Abid Rasool Khan said that it is the need of the hour for the party to take quick steps in order to
keep its declining image intact. He sees the latest move in the same direction and adds that the party had sustained huge electoral losses because many of the welfare schemes in the State are still considered as YSR schemes. “It’s a great move by our CM. Indira Gandhi was a crowd puller. The promotional campaign will definitely have an impact on the weaker sections. It will also help the party create an
image among the people of the State that all these welfare programmes were the brainchild of the party,” he said. Minister for medical education Kondru Murali Mohan echoed the sentiment. “If we look at the by-elections, it becomes clear that people still believe that YSR introduced these programmes. With this in their mind, they voted for YSRC. The ad will definitely help,” he said.
IT’S A CONSPIRACY
YSRC leader Gattu Ramachandra Rao, said that their prediction that the ruling Congress is hatching a conspiracy to remove the name of YSR became a reality with the telecast of the ad on various TV channels. He further added that the portrayal of Indira Gandhi is also an indication that it did not have any leader like YSR to lead the party.
REPORTERS’ DIARY
Babu changes priorities with ease I
n the best of situations, belonging to the media industry in this day and age is not a thing to be proud of. But there are times when you feel it the most, when you wish you did anything else in the world but this. Almost always, one of those moments will come at a press conference. As an aside, remember, there are three ways to have a guaranteed media presence at your event. One, promise goodies, even if it’s a key chain. Two, hold it at a star hotel and mention in the invite, the phrase, “followed by lunch.” Or three, the best of all, invite a star. Anything between an A-list hero and anyone who is female and was ever on screen,
will do. Next, there’s a hierarchy of noise. Which in descending order is the television crew followed by the shutterbugs and then the scribes. With wires, tapes, mikes, complete with the stench of bad breadth, cheap cologne and dirty socks, a scene is invaded and occupied. The object of interest will meanwhile try to make a preliminary statement. But there’s too much noise. Each TV crew is shushing the other from making noise. And cellphones everywhere are ringing. So the sensitive give up all and go for lunch. Head back to the office and rephrase the press release. Still wondering why all news seems the same spiel to you? PC
BABU HOPS WITH EASE
It is said that politicians live on publicity and gimmicks. How true! The architect of Hitec City, Former CM and Telugu Desam
Party president N Chandra Babu Naidu is also not an exception to it. From hi-tech to saving BCs he has slithered with the ease of an eel. After announcing a
‘Declaration to attract Backward Classes’ in the State during its State-level meeting this month, Naidu is leaving no stone unturned to promote the party’s policy decision. Addressing these meetings, Naidu is proudly saying that his BC declaration has put other political parties in the State in a tight spot and they too are out to woo the community. BC is a convenient plank as 50 per cent of the population comes under this tag. “It’s a loose confederation which means nothing much to anybody,” as a wise politico pointed out. “But for selfish politicians it can get them votes.” IA With inputs from Padmini C and Inkeshaf Ahmed

ithin seconds of getting on stage, Shazia Mirza, a British comedian and columnist, had swept Hyderabadis off their feet. Poking fun by calling them gay and taking shots at Delhi girls and Gujaratis, she kept the audience at the edge of their seats. They, on their part, took all the insults in their stride and cheered her. “While on stage, I talk about myself and make others laugh. I was born to Pakistani parents and am a woman. I am always plagued by questions on how I made it when there are not many south Asian women doing comedy in UK. My answer is simple. I don’t see myself as a woman or a Pakistani. When I am on stage, I am a performer taking digs at myself and others so that I can get the audience to laugh. I like the sound of people laughing and this gives me a high,” she says. She realised her true calling of becoming a stand-up comedian while teaching science to high school children. “I was teaching kids science. I
hated my job and they hated me. But it is during those monologues that I gave to the kids that I realised my love for making others laugh. I cracked jokes while giving lectures and they laughed. This made me immensely happy. My life as a stand-up comedian happened by accident. I never planned this in my life,” she says. Shazia has admitted many times that her parents are conservative and are waiting to see her married and for her to give them grandchildren.
When asked how they took the news of her taking up stand-up comedy as a profession, Shazia said, “I didn’t tell them at the beginning and since the time they knew, they have been living in the hope that one day I will grow out of this. It is like when you say to your parents that you are a lesbian. They think it is just a phase and one day you will get out of it. I have always been a disappointment to my parents. They wanted me to become a doctor or an engineer and I turned out to be a
stand-up comedian. My column in The Guardian is called ‘Diary of a disappointing daughter’,” she says. She grabbed many eyeballs some time back when she made a documentary called “F*#k Off I am Hairy Woman”. For the documentary, she had grown her body hair for six months to see how people reacted. “We found that the world still looks down upon women who have body hair. I grew my body hair for six months and went around in shorts to check how people reacted. People are of the impression that the person hasn’t made an effort when they see a hairy woman. However, this is not the case with men,” she says. Talking about her parents’ home town in Pakistan, Shazia says, “I visited Pakistan only a few months ago. I was surprised by the response I received. I thought I would have to tone down my humour a bit so that they wouldn't be offended. But once I saw women in hijabs laughing with their husbands by their sides, I let my guard down and started being myself,” she says.

ains are a problem. I am unable to burn my garbage,” Rani, a GHMC cleaner, says. Instead of dumping the waste, cleaners burn it. This is the situation in most residential areas. According to the GHMC rule book, burning dry leaves is hazardous as it releases carbon monoxide. But the reality is that not only leaves but also plastic, the fumes of which are toxic, is being burnt. “There is no bin in our area. Hence, we either burn or leave garbage at street corners for the truck to pick it up,” said Rani. Residents complain that burning of garbage is taking a toll on their health. Usha K, a resident of Yadamma Nagar Colony, said, “My daughter has asthma. Workers burn garbage each day outside my house. This is the reason why she does not get better.”

Dr VK Bhargava, a consultant physician, says people may develop obstructive pulmonary disease when they inhale plastic fumes. “There is no evidence, but one may develop lung and heart disease on inhaling such smoke,” he said. Workers say it creates bigger problems if they leave garbage on the streets. When asked why they don't separate plastic, a cleaner said, “Officers come and check our work; if they think what we're doing is wrong, they should tell us.” Health and sanitation officer Vasant Kumar said, “We try keeping a check, but we can't keep doing that. They know it is wrong but because one person does it, others also burn waste.” After complaints to the GHMC yielded no results, environmentalist Jayaprakash Nambaru educated workers in his colony and today, no garbage is burnt. He suggests that instead of relying on the GHMC, civil society should come together and stop the menace.

WASTE MANAGEMENT
SRINIVAS SETTY
Wealth from waste waiting to be tapped Hyderabad, the sixth metro of India, can generate thousands of jobs and considerable electricity and manure if its own solid waste is recovered and recycled. PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com

illing crowds, mounting wastes, perpetual problem of disposing waste and receding greenery are your problems in Hyderabad? Join the crowd. The world’s cities are in danger of getting buried in their own wastes by 2025. Mounting municipal waste, a symbol of growing urbanisation and upward mobility of people, is an estimated 1.3 billion tonnes a year today and is billed to become 2.6 billion tonnes in the next 13 years, reports Worldwatch Institute. Municipal wastes consist of organic material, paper, plastic, glass, metals, and other refuse collected by municipal author-

ities, largely from homes, offices, institutions, and commercial establishments. The wealthier you are, higher the wastes you produce. The trend noticed is that the wealthy tend to produce more wastes than the poor. There is therefore a scope for a waste-tax on the wealthy. The 34 industrialised nations, for instance, produce 1.6 million wastes per day followed by the four developing countries, China, India, Brazil
and Mexico. The US leads the world in waste generation. Only a quarter of the world’s garbage is diverted to recycling, composting, or digestion. The gold standard for municipal waste will be to integrate it into a materials management approach known as a “circular economy,” which involves a series of policies to reduce the use of some materials and to reclaim or recycle most of the rest. Japan has made the circular economy a national priority since the early 1990s through passage of a steady progression of waste reduction laws, and the country has achieved notable successes, observes Worldwatch senior fellow Gary Gardner.

towns and cities generates 130,000 tonnes of garbage per day or 47.2 million tonnes per year which comes to 500 grams per head per day. Our recycle of wastes is pitiably low at 10 per cent. It has to be raised to 50 per cent if the cities are not to choke on their own refuse, experts
warn. There is tremendous scope for units willing to harness the wastes: solid bio-wastes and non-bio wastes. A waste is actually wealth that waits to be converted to make manure and generate power and thus solve the prevalent unemployment to a large extent. Hyderabad, for instance, is estimated to generate 5,200 tonnes per day of municipal waste alone. This does not count construction debris, scrap and other wastes. Veterans say if recovery and recycle facilities are set up this could generate 5,000 regular employment and 20,000 indirect jobs besides the City getting cleaned and generate electricity and manure. The issue brooks no delay.

ULTRAFAST NET UNVEILED
10 steps to file I-T returns The department has made it really easy for taxpayers to file their returns. Google on Thursday unveiled an ultrafast Web service along with an Internet television subscription in the Kansas City area as part of a pilot project to boost broadband speeds. The Google Fiber superfast broadband network will be available starting in September, with one-gigabyte per second speeds -- about 100 times faster than most current Internet subscriptions. The wired home project will allow people to replace cable television and Internet with a single subscription to be controlled by a Google tablet computer, which will be offered for free. "Google Fiber is 100 times faster than today's average broadband," Google said.

f you haven't yet filed your income tax returns, you can do it without much hassle at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. We will take you through the process of filing the income tax returns for a Salaried individual in this article. Once you are on this site, follow the following steps: Step 1: Left hand corner, first tab says, Download. Click on AY2012-13 which will take you to a table describing the form that you need to use according to your income sources. For example, if you are a salaried person with only interest income apart from your salary, you can download the form ITR-1. Step 2: Scroll down and download the relevant form on to your computer, that is ITR-1. Step 3: The downloaded form is in excel format. Fill in the personal details. If you do not know the information about 'Income Tax Ward / Circle', it's okay to leave it blank. Or your Chartered Accountant from previous years may help you. Step 4: Before going to the section on Income and Deductions, go to the next worksheet called 'TDS'. Fill in the details about the TDS on Salary and other income from Form 16 and Form 16A's. At this point, you must cross check the amounts that you have filled in with the Form 26AS. Form 26AS
NUMEROLOGY can also be obtained from the website mentioned above. You just need your PAN number to obtain it. Form 26AS is the statement of all taxes deposited to the Government under your PAN Number. If the amounts that you have filled in the form, exactly match with the Form 26AS, your tax return will sail through. But if they don't, sooner or later, the IT department will come back to you to explain the differences. Step 5: Go back to the first worksheet and finish the section on Income and Deductions. For Salaried people, most of the items here can be filled in straight from the Form 16 that their employer would have given them. In case you did not give the details about your Life Insurance Policies or other
deductible investments to your employer, you can include them here now. Step 6: If you have made donations to approved institutions, fill in the fourth worksheet. Step 7: Calculate your tax liability using the 'Calculate Tax' Tab on the right hand corner of the first sheet. Step 8: Fill the third sheet according to the tax status. If you need to get a refund, you will need to give your bank account details. If you need to pay the tax, you can pay it using your online banking facility or by going to the bank. Obtain the BSR code and the challan details and fill it in Step 9: Using tabs on the right hand corner, validate all the four worksheets. If you want you may print the sheets for your records.
Step 10: Generate xml using the tab on the right hand corner of the first sheet, save it on to your computer and then upload it on the website under submit return/AY12-13. You will get an ITR-V as acknowledgement of your returns filed. You will need to sign it and send it to Bangalore. The address is mentioned in the ITR-V itself. There are instructions at every step. The income tax department has made it really easy for anyone to file their own returns. In fact, they have also started the facility of getting a Tax Return Preparer (TRP) to come to your house and guide you in the process or you can get help from them online or on the phone at 18001801961. The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment in Chennai, which is developing a new Armoured Repair and Recovery Vehicle, has reached the final stage of the ‘complete specification’ for the ARRV, a senior scientist said today. The new ARRV, a variant of the Arjun Main Battle Tank, is being developed for the Indian Army at the DRDO lab here. CVRDE will develop two prototypes in the next three years. The hull, including the chassis automative system, will almost be the same as Arjun Mark II and slight modifications will be made to accommodate a crane and a winch since it will be a recovery vehicle, he said. The Army is expected to order 30 units if the lab satisfies its specifications in the first two units.

T
he eldest of the Seven Sisters seems to have no respite from sorrows. Barely had the people recovered from the devastating floods and started to pick up the threads of their lives when an even more vicious man-made disaster struck in the form of communal riots. For the last one week, the picturesque landscape has been reduced to a ghost of its former self with villages reduced to ashes and the air reeks of fear. As the toll climbed to 44, with about two lakh displaced from their homes, the ghosts of the past seem to have returned to the state. The latest round of clashes between Bodos and Muslims is reminiscent of the violence that has been a companion to the state since 1979. That was the year when All Asom Students Union began its campaign against illegal migrants in the state. Though the more militant section went on to form the dreaded United Liberation Front of Asom, the 1985 Assam Accord was able to bring some calm to the state, though its ineffective implementation would remain a bone of contention. The next ethnic unrest was from the Bodo people and the toll it took on lives and property was equally devastating. After intense agitations by All Bodo Students’ Union and violence by the Bodo Liberation Tigers Force, peace was reached in 2003 with the formation of autonomous Bodo Territorial Council. However, the influx of illegal immigrants continued unabated and their numbers tilting the demographics to unsettling levels and putting severe pressure on the economy. The politicians paid only lip service to the agreements with the ethnic groups as a consolidated vote bank in the form of illegal immigrants, which would guarantee them power regardless of the quality of governance was something they did not want to risk losing. With occasional clashes, the smouldering embers never went out and were waiting for some fuel to grow into an inferno. Clashes that took place were just that and in no time it was spreading across the state. With shootat-sight orders in place and the army called out, an uneasy peace is prevailing; but unless the fundamental issues that plague the state are decisively dealt with, it is only a matter of time before vultures start circling for carrion.

Fighting raged in Aleppo on Thursday as clashes also shook parts of Damascus and other areas, with at least 121 people reported killed. ALEPPO: Rebel forces were bracing on Friday for a decisive “mother of all” battles in Aleppo, as Washington warned the Syrian army could be preparing to carry out a massacre in the country’s second city. The Syrian army has been sending waves of reinforcements towards the northern city, and a security source told AFP the offensive feared by the rebels could come as early as Friday. “The special forces were deployed on Wednesday and Thursday on the edges of the city, and more troops have arrived to take part in a generalised counter-offensive on Friday or Saturday,” the security source said of Aleppo. Fighting raged in Aleppo on Thursday as clashes also shook parts of Damascus and other areas, with at least 121 people reported killed — 64 civilians, 32 regime troops and 25 rebels. Rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad’s regime also brought in reinforcements, with the source estimating that between 1,500 and 2,000

FAMILY DRAMA
MJ’s mum ‘returns’ to grandchildren LOS ANGELES: Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine returned to her grandchildren Thursday after a family battle led a US judge to transfer the guardianship of the late singer’s three children to his nephew TJ. Late singer Jackson’s 14-yearold daughter Paris — who had been broadcasting her fears about her grandmother’s whereabouts on Twitter for days — tweeted “grandma’s here! #thankyougod” in the early morning hours. Katherine Jackson was granted custody of Paris, Prince Michael, 15, and Blanket, 10 after their father’s death. But judge Mitchell Beckloff suspended that arrangement on Wednesday because the Jackson family matriarch had left the family home in Los Angeles.
She later vowed to fight to regain legal guardianship of the children. “I am devastated that while I’ve been away, my grandchildren have been taken away from me, and I’m coming home to see about that,” the grandmother said in an interview. The fractious family has been embroiled in legal and financial disputes since the pop star’s sudden death in June 2009. AFP
The drought in America’s breadbasket is intensifying at an unprecedented rate, experts have warned, driving concern food prices could soar if crops in the world’s key producer are decimated. The US Drought Monitor yesterday reported almost a threefold increase in areas of extreme drought over the past week in the nine Midwestern states where three quarters of the country’s corn and soybean crops are produced. Almost two-thirds of the continental United States is now suffering drought conditions, the largest area recorded since the Drought Monitor project started in 1999.

hether he could have launched a Velvet Revolution like his late Czech friend Vaclav Havel did will remain forever a mystery. But even in death, Oswaldo Paya, the prominent Cuban dissident who died in a questionable car crash Sunday, still appears to be rattling the island. Paya was “more than a dissident,” reads an op-ed by Spanish newspaper El Pais. His death “means a major setback for the future of democracy in Cuba,” it said. As 60-year-old Paya was buried on Tuesday, Cuban police reportedly beat and arrested at least 40 of his supporters who shouted “Libertad!” (freedom) at the funeral ceremony. Among them was another leading dissident Guillermo Farinas, reported AFP. Farinas is a winner of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought — just like Paya was. The BBC reports that most of those detainees, including Farinas, have since been freed. President Barack Obama reportedly called the Paya family to offer condolences, telling them Oswaldo Paya had been "a tireless champion for greater civic and human rights in Cuba." The crash also killed another passenger, Harold Cepero, and injured a Spaniard and a Swede traveling with them. Paya’s daughter and son have told reporters the activist had been receiving threats and that his car was more likely forced off the road. Cuban police said they are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS THE ANONYMOUS ALIEN
M
y driver showed up to work a few days ago with his head shaved. Not a good look. I asked him why he had shaved it and he just kind of smiled. A day or so later, someone told me he had shaved his head so he would grow back more hair. Some time back, an employee of mine became rather faint, and nearly passed out. I told my assistant to call a doctor. Soon thereafter, my assistant came to me and told me the “doctor” was here. I ran out of my office, to the room where the faint employee was, to find the “doctor” – a homeopath – rubbing my employee’s feet. For years, living in India, I have been awoken almost nightly by security men walking the neighborhood blowing whistles. I’ve been told this is to scare away criminals. I’m all for a good myth, especially when it’s positioned as a story that intrigues and captivates the mind and everyone knows it’s just a story. But when myths stand in the way of truth, they can actually do serious harm, and that riles me. The amount of hair on my driver’s head? That’s based on genetics, and shaving it is not going to do a thing to increase it. Can the genetic reality of hair loss be altered? Yes. By drugs, only two of which have been approved by the US Food and
But when myths stand in the way of truth, they can actually do serious harm, and that riles me. Drug Administration in all of human history to slow or reverse hair loss. All the other tonics and medicines and chemicals that consumers spend billions on each year to grow hair on their heads are unproven, untested and potentially dangerous. Which is to say that any of these tonics and medicines and chemicals may grow hair, or they may reduce it, or they may cause cancer, or permanent stains or chemical poisoning. Until someone spends the time and money to do a serious dou-
ble-blinded study on the effects of any one of these snake oils, nobody knows. Ah, but you say it worked for your friend, so why shouldn’t you try it, right? Careful! Anecdotal evidence is notoriously unreliable. Are you sure it worked for your friend? Did he count the hairs on his head each day for weeks or months, to verify hair growth, or has he just convinced himself of its success? Did he use nothing else on his head during this time that may have impacted his hair growth? Can he assure you he won’t get cancer years from now from whatever slop he’s pouring on his head? What about the homeopath, rubbing my employee’s feet? Homeopathic medicine may work. It may not. It may have all sorts of side benefits nobody
even realizes are there. And it may have dangerous consequences that nobody knows about either. Until someone studies every homeopathic herb, medicine and treatment, on hundreds or thousands of people in a double-blinded, controlled environment, it’s impossible to say. And that brings me to the whistle-blowing security guards, fearlessly fending off criminals with their mighty whistles. As I lay in bed at night, waiting for them to pass by so I can fall back to sleep, I wonder about the criminals out there, trying to break into your home or mine, or steal our cars. And I think, if I were a criminal, what I would like to do to help me perpetrate my crimes is to design a warning system: a system in which, before a security guard who might catch me while I’m in the act of stealing approaches, I get some loud and clear warning that he is coming, so that I can carefully hide, then wait to continue my crime once the guard has passed. And lo and behold, such a system already exists – right here in my own neighborhood in Hyderabad! Let’s get to the point, and fast, where we tell stories about myths of hair tonics, homeopaths and whistling-blowing guards. Let’s have a good laugh over them, let’s enjoy them for what they are – stories. But let’s leave them at that, okay? A foreigner’s observations on living, working, surviving and thriving in India.
EDITORIALS Love it or hate it, the Olympics are a spectacle
A
s the world braces for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics, brought to you courtesy film director Danny Boyle, it begins to dawn that for all the complaints and cynicism, everyone’s looking forward to the Games. Even in India, an also-ran in every Olympic games, Games fever takes a stranglehold. Sure the Indian cricket team has embarked on another pointless sub-continental jaunt to Sri Lanka, but that will not stem the enthusiasm for the greatest sporting event that comes around once every four years. The post-Cold war Games have transcended politics, or have made a concerted effort to, and the expulsion of a Greek athlete for making racist Tweets shows that socially too, the Games are at the vanguard of inclusivity. The melting pot that is London is the perfect venue, far removed from the totalitarian sham that was Beijing, and the financial quag that proved to be Athens undoing. These Games are going to soar, let’s hope they’re safe too.

icrosoft is gearing up to release its much-awaited Windows 8, but the vultures are already circling. The carcass of Windows 7 has not yet fully decayed, but the warning bells are ringing to alert people that Windows 8 may just be a software too far for many PC-makers. The gaming community is also up in arms after Microsoft announced that it would batten down the software’s hatches in a very Jobsian manner. This could mean that Android could very well emerge victor.

HOCKEY
The last India saw gold in field hockey was the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Since then we have been on the quest for victory. The pressure is great but we are sure our men in blue will taste victory this time and as they go out to battle it this song from Goal could well do to boost their spirits Bandh Kafan Hum Sar Pe Chale Hain, Khake Kasam Hum Ghar Se Chale Hain, Saar Jho Uute Hain, Nahin Jhuke Gein.
100 MTS DASH
Imagine a roadroller coming at you, and you running, that pretty much sums up what runners do in the 100 mts sprint. Aage aate aate jaate jate, khoye khoye jaage jaage, thake thake haare hare , daure daure sare sare, pecche pecche aagee aage, Gire pade bhage bhage, bhaaag bhagam bhaaag. And this song from Bhaagam Bhag fits the bill perfectly. Probably the Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt could draw some inspiration from this song.
koyee agge hai koyee pichchhe hai, agadam bagadam daud hai.

exactly that with the world going Boom Boom Boom at their achievements.
BADMINTON
MARATHON
Heard of herd mentality? That’s close to what a marathon is. A race where no one seems to be in a hurry but wants to get to the finish first and in the shortest time possible. And the only song that comes to mind when you think of this is from the film Daud, “Ajab daud hai gajab daud hai, kee yeh jindagee yaro daud hai,

Our medal hopefuls Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang sure need to do some heavy duty firing if they need to see the gold medal hanging around their necks. Our boys Vijay Krishnan and Vijender Singh and the whole team will be on a high considering the amount of support they are getting from the country. We can already hear the medals clinking. A TRAINER’S GUIDE TO FITNESS
19
It takes perseverance to be fit Everybody wants to be as fit as an athlete. But what it really takes is hard work, determination and dedication to actually achieve those fitness goals. GAVIN HOLT feedback@postnoon.com
stamina is reasonably good. You can up your stamina levels by including cardio exercises to your work out plan. Start at a level that’s comfortable, and gradually increase the intensity while reducing the time taken to complete that task. The basic and best way to build stamina is to jog for two minutes and follow it up by sprinting for two minutes. You can increase the time by threefour minutes. Alternatively, you can also do ‘knee up running’ — jog in one spot, bringing your knees up to waist level followed by bringing your heels to the hips. For more intensity, you can include kangaroo jumps — while jumping, pull your knees towards the chest. If you are an outdoors person, set goals and push yourself to meet them. If you are able to walk the perimeter of KBR Park in, let’s say, 40 minutes set a target to finish it in 30.
I
n my career spanning 20odd years as a fitness professional, I have trained various kinds of people who come to me with different fitness goals in mind. But even today, training a sportsperson is the most enjoyable experience. Be it cricketers of the Hyderabad Ranji team, national level swimmers, women cricketers like Sunita, who represent India in women’s cricket or badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa, who is part of India’s badminton team at the Olympics — sportspersons are truly some of my fittest, and most inspiring clients. The reason? They are not driven by fitness fads or the desire to achieve a body like some celebrity. What they want is a truly fit, strong and chiselled body. They want to work on their stamina, strength and agility, and they are dedicated enough to work hard to meet these goals while following a balanced diet. That’s what being fit is all about. Thanks to the Olympics, ‘athletic’ is the buzz word again. Everyone wants to look sporty, never mind if they’ve not touched a bat or a raquet since high school. Shapely, yet strong legs and arms, a strong back, the gait of a sportsperson, and a firm midriff — these top the wishlist of both men and women these days. So what does it take to snag a sportstar’s fit body? The answer is loads of car-

These will strengthen your upper abs, middle abs, lower abs and obliques. To work on your lower abs strenghten your glutes, and do basic lower back training. The Good Mornings and Surya Namaskars are your best bets.

to gain strength. Stick to basic exercises for best results — military presses for shoulders, weight squats and lunges for the legs, dead-lift for the back and hamstrings, barbell curls for biceps, overhead extensions for triceps, bend over rowing for the upper back, and flat bench presses for the chest. Don’t forget to use body weight training, like chin-ups, push-ups, tricep dips, free squats etc. For strong legs, do squats, lunges, leg curls and calf raises.
STRETCHES
It’s the most important part of training, both before and after, to avoid injuries and help the muscles recover.
DIET
Throw all those crash-diet cutouts out of the window and follow a balanced diet. Apart from drinking plenty of water, make sure you have these must-haves in your diet — carbohydrates, proteins, fibre, fats, vitamins and minerals.
TIPS
Remember, bigger muscles always support smaller muscles, so to have strong knees strengthen your quads and hamstrings. For a strong back, strengthen glutes. Reaching your goal should be a passion, not an obsession so don’t go overboard. It takes time, patience, hard work and perseverance. The app also provides a weight tracker, a kick counter as well as a contraction timer. The app is available for iPhone users.
Dystonia describes the involuntary sustained muscle contractions that lead to abnormal movements and postures. It is an incurable neurological movement disorder. There are several types of dystonia. It may affect more than one area of the body. Although dystonia is a neurological disorder, it does not lead to problems with other functions of the brain. Dystonia can affect people of all ages.
You would be surprised to know but your bones are actually hollow. The insides of a bone are said to be filled with bone marrow, which is then protected by the hard, outer surface of the bone.
Erasistratus was a Greek anatomist who was the first person to provide a description of the valves of the heart. During his research he also concluded that the heart was not the centre of sensations. Erasistratus is said to one of the first to have distinguished between veins and arteries. Another aspect for which he has been credited is the descriptions of the cerebrum and the cerebellum.

DIABETES IN WOMEN
BREAKTHROUGH
Diabetic women less sexually satisfied: Study According to studies by researchers at the University of California San Fransisco, diabetic women tend to experience lower satisfaction than non-diabetic women. WASHINGTON: Diabetic women are just as keen on sexual activity as their non-diabetic sisters, but tend to experience lower sexual satisfaction, says a study. University of California San Francisco (UCSF) researchers also found that diabetic women receiving insulin treatment were at higher risk for the specific complications of lubrication and orgasm. “Diabetes is a recognised risk factor for erectile dysfunction in men, but there have been almost no data to indicate whether it also affects sexual function in women,” said senior study author Alison J Huang, assistant professor of medicine at the UCSF, the journal Obstetrics and Gynaecology reported. Huang, lead author Kelli Copeland, of the UCSF
Women’s Health Clinical Research Centre and their colleagues examined the relationship of diabetes to sexual function in an ethnically diverse group of middle-aged and older women, according to a university statement. Researchers sent a questionnaire to 2,270 women aged 40 to 80 years who were insulin-treated diabetic, non-insulin-treated diabetic or non diabetic women, and then compared their self-reported sexual desire, frequency of sexual activity, overall sexual satisfaction, and specific sexual problems (difficulty with lubrication, arousal, orgasm, or pain).
They also assessed the relationships between diabetic endorgan complications (heart disease, stroke, renal dysfunction, and peripheral neuropathy) and sexual function. Among the 2,270 participants, 486 (21.4 percent) had diabetes, and, of those, 139 (6.1 percent) were taking insulin. Overall, 63.7 per cent of participants reported some sexual activity in the past three months. The odds of reporting low overall sexual satisfaction were more than two-fold higher in insulin-treated diabetic women, and more than 40 per cent higher in non-insulin treated diabet-
ic women, compared to nondiabetic women. Among sexually active women, insulin-treated diabetic women were more than twice as likely to report difficulty with lubrication, and 80 per cent more likely to report difficulty achieving orgasm compared to non-diabetic women, after adjusting for the same demographic and clinical factors. Among all diabetic women, end-organ complications such as heart disease, stroke, renal dysfunction, and peripheral neuropathy were associated with decreased sexual function in at least one domain. FDA-APPROVED TREATMENT
Therapy for colorectal cancer NEW DELHI: There’s new hope for colorectal cancer patients with the US FDA approving the first personalized therapy for its treatment. More than 42,000 new CRC are estimated to occur in India in 2012, doctors say. The FDA nod for Erbitux is based on data from a large scale patient study titled CRYSTAL conducted outside the US, said an official release.
“The totality of the data from CRYSTAL, along with data from other Erbitux trials, provide compelling and consistent evidence of the benefit of Erbitux in the treatment of KRAS mutation negative EGFRexpressing mCRC,” said Ashok Vaid, chairman of the Medanta Cancer Institute, Gurgaon. Colorectal cancer occurs when the disease has spread to at least one distant organ and
tissues, such as the liver, lungs, lining of the abdomen or ovaries. Generally, only 12 per cent of patients affected with this survive beyond five years. However, once they were treated with cetuximab , combined with chemotherapy, the patients’ survival rate had gone up to as much as 20 per cent and with decrease in the risk of disease progression found an analysis of the study. Discovery may help target Alzheimer’s SYDNEY: Panic disorders and Alzheimer’s can be treated more effectively by targeting a new brain area that specialises in peripheral vision, according to a research. Researchers led by Hsin-Hao Yu and Marcello Rosa, professor of physiology from Monash University, made the discovery that a brain area, known as prostriata, was specialised in detecting fast-moving objects in peripheral vision. This area, located in a primitive part of the cerebral cortex, has characteristics unlike any other visual area described before, including a “direct line” of communication to brain areas controlling emotion and quick reactions, the journal Current Biology reported. Hsin-Hao said the discovery, identified during the development of the Monash Vision Group’s bionic eye, could lead to new treatments for panic disorders such as agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) and may extend into other medical areas including Alzheimer’s treatment, according to a university statement. “This area is likely to be hyperactive in panic disorder, with agoraphobia. This knowledge could lead to treatment options for the hyperactivity, and therefore sensitivity to such disorders, particularly the fear of open spaces,” said Hsin-Hao. “Correlation with previous studies also shows that prostriata is one of the first areas affected in Alzheimer’s disease. This knowledge helps to explain spatial disorientation and the tendency to fall, which are among the earliest signs of a problem associated with Alzheimer’s.” Rosa said this area had ultrafast responses to visual stimuli, simultaneously broadcasting information to brain areas that control attention, emotional and motor reactions. This challenges conceptions of how the brain processes visual information. “This suggests a specialised brain circuit through which stimuli in peripheral vision can be fast-tracked to command quickly coordinated responses,” Rosa said. Onamalu is thought provoking Rajendra Prasad delivers yet another heartwarming performance which nearly saves Kranthi Madhav’s Onamalu from being too preachy. HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com
K
ranthi Madhav’s Onamalu is about one man’s journey to connect with his roots and why we should not leave our past behind as time goes by. It’s a thought provoking film by all means and an honest attempt to tell a story which we can relate to; however, in the course of this journey, one can’t help but feel that the storytelling and the characters are still stuck in a time warp. Narayana Rao (Rajendra Prasad) is a school teacher in his village and he takes on the onus of being the guiding force in the lives of his students. He believes in harmony which is the prime motto Movie: Onamalu Cast: Rajendra Prasad, Kalyani, Chalapathi Rao Directed by: Kranthi Madhav Rating: of almost every one in the village. It’s a picture perfect depiction of how our lives were a couple of decades ago when urbanisation had not set in. Few years later, Narayana Rao goes to the US to live with his son, but he can’t stop thinking about his glorious days and wants to get back to connect to his roots before he dies. When he comes back, he’s shocked to see how much things have changed. Every memory which he had cherished all his life is gone with the wind. How he handles this change forms the rest of the story. Prasad delivers yet another heartwarming performance
as a school teacher who believes in harmony. He fits the bill so well that he’s the single biggest reason why the message which Madhav has tried to convey through Onamalu is worth pondering upon. There’s absolutely no tinge of negativity in the first half of the film, which isn’t a bad thing but it’s too sweet to digest. It’s only when Narayana Rao returns to his village to see how things have changed that the real crux of the film is revealed. Dialogues written by Khadeer Babu are good especially those related to how people have forgotten about their roots. The film questions the moral choices of the current generation and throws light on why there’s a disconnect in relationships and emotions which were the very foundation of our society few decades ago. The film gets too preachy at times and its slow pace, especially in first half, tests our patience. Keeping all this aside, the film, despite all its flaws, has an important message to youngsters today. It does feel like a moral science lesson. Perhaps, we need someone to remind us again and again about what we are missing.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Stage set for opening extravaganza of Games JAMES PHEBY Agence France-Presse LONDON: The stage is set and the athletes are primed as the seven-year countdown to the London 2012 Olympics reaches its finale with Friday’s muchanticipated opening ceremony. event. Prime Minister David Cameron insisted that Britain would deliver a memorable Games after US presidential hopeful Mitt Romney backtracked on barbed comments he made about the preparations. The Republican hopeful, in
London to attend Friday’s opening, said the build-up had been “disconcerting”, pointing to the failure of a private security contractor to provide the number of guards it had promised. Cameron responded by saying the Britons would get behind the Games
despite an economic downturn. “We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world,” Cameron said, adding, “Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere.”
Indian archers begin campaign today with hope for medals MR MISHRA Agence France-Presse LONDON: Touted as serious medal contenders, a bunch of unassuming archers will seek to give India’s Olympic campaign the perfect start when the event gets underway here on Friday at the hallowed turf of the Lord’s, the spiritual home of cricket. If the archers needed a spark of inspiration, they simply have to turn to the historic venue that has witnessed cricketing heroics for many a generation. Now the Indians will be keen to make an impact with bow and arrows. Going by current form and rankings, the Indians would fancy their chances of clinching a few medals, including the coveted gold medal.
Unlike most other disciplines which begin only after the Opening Ceremony, archery starts tomorrow with the ranking rounds for the draw. Women’s football has already got off the blocks yesterday. This is only the second time since the 2004 Athens Games that Indian archers have been able to earn the maximum of six quota places for the Olympics and the team will look for podium finishes in at least two of the four events in London. World number one Deepika Kumari (left), the 18-year-old from Ranchi, will spearhead the Indian campaign in the Olympics and it remains to be seen whether the burden of huge expectations will have a bearing on her performance.

Thorpe: Magnussen best in a decade SYDNEY: Five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe says fellow Australian James “Missile” Magnussen (in pic below) is the best swimmer to emerge on the international scene in a decade. Thorpe, who failed in his comeback bid to make the London Games, said he was confident Magnussen could smash Brazilian Cesar Cielo’s 46.91-second 100m freestyle world record as early as the semi-finals. “For me, watching him, I see a new era of sprinting,” Thorpe told Australian media Friday. He’s the most impressive swimmer I’ve seen, probably over the past decade, that’s new to the sport. He’s exciting to watch.” Thorpe, who missed out on a place in the Australian team after failing to qualify in the 100m and 200m freestyle events, said that Magnussen was leading the country to “the dawn of a new era in swimming”. “I think he will do incredible things,” he added.

Doctor reveals doping scandal SYDNEY: Chinese Olympians were subjected to a state-sponsored doping regime in the 1980s and 1990s, a retired chief medical supervisor revealed to Australian media on Friday. Xue Yinxian, the former chief doctor for the Chinese gymnastics team in the 1980s, said steroids and human growth hormones were officially treated as part of “scientific training” as the country emerged as a sporting power. “It was rampant in the 1980s,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald. “One had to accept it.” Xue said athletes often did not know what they were being injected with and medical staff who refused to participate were marginalised.

Mayor offers Cameron map to ‘nowhere’ WASHINGTON: Salt Lake City’s mayor extended a tonguein-cheek invitation Thursday to host British Prime Minister David Cameron, offering him a map to show him where the “middle of nowhere” is. The taunt was the latest salvo in a transatlantic heated exchange over the Olympics. It all started when US presidential hopeful Mitt Romney made some ill-advised remarks about London’s Olympic preparations after arriving in Britain on the first-stop of an international tour designed to showcase his diplomatic skills. NBC television broadcast an interview in which Romney, a Republican, said it was “hard to know just how well” the Olympics will turn out and said there were “a few things that were disconcerting.” He even questioned the British Olympic spirit, adding: “Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment?”

ELSPETH BURNSIDE Agencie France-Presse EVIAN-LES-BAINS, FRANCE: American Stacy Lewis shot a course record 63 in the opening round of the Evian Masters in France on Thursday, her scorching form matching the 30-degree heat. Runner-up behind Japan’s Ai Miyazato last year, Lewis had a flawless nine-birdie round to lead by two shots from South Korea’s Park Hee Young. Another South Korean, Lee Ilhee, was in third place on 66. Lewis had seven birdies in a row from the seventh and then added more at the 17th and 18th for the terrific nine-underpar score. Swede Helen Alfredsson, the only three-time winner, shot 63 on her way to victory in 2008, but Lewis’s score counts as a new record as the course has been lengthened in preparation for the tournament becoming the fifth women’s major next year. “It’s a great way to start,” said Lewis, who won a major last year — the Kraft Nabisco Championship. “I love coming to Evian. You always feel so relaxed,” she added.
Two big names struggled. South Korea’s Choi Na Yeon had a 75, and world number one Yani Tseng of Taiwan shot 76.

I also just missed at 12. I’ve had six in a row before, but never seven.” Park, who made her big breakthrough with a debut win on the LPGA Tour at the Titleholders Championship last season, also had a blistering birdie run.
She made five birdies in a row from the fifth and had eight in all. Her only bogey was at the fourth and her great round came just days after she switched to a belly putter. “I have never changed my putter in 15 years playing golf,” said the 25-year-old. “I went over to the belly putter just 10 days ago and I was really nervous about using it. “But it really worked well and everyone was telling me
that Ernie Els won the Open with a long putter so it was probably a good thing to do. They were right. “I also think it is nice to come back after a break. In the past couple of weeks I’ve been kayaking, cycling running and playing tennis. Just things away from golf to relax.” Feng Shanshan, the first Chines player to win a major — the LPGA Championship in June — dropped a shot at the long 18th but stayed well in touch on four-under-par 68. She was tied for sixth. Japan’s Ai Miyazato, the defending champion, opened with a 71, while the best of the six French players was Karine Icher. But two big names struggled. South Korea’s Choi Na Yeon, winner of the US Women’s Open earlier this month, had a 75, and world number one Yani Tseng of Taiwan shot 76.

BUDAPEST: Kimi Raikkonen (right) is optimistic he can deliver his first win of the season for Lotus if the sun is shining at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Scott thunders to lead in Toronto
Piercy took advantage of superb conditions by firing an eightunder 62 on the Hamilton Golf and Country Club course. TORONTO: American Scott Piercy recorded two eagles en route to a course record and a one-shot lead over England’s Greg Owen after the opening round of the Canadian Open on Thursday. The 33-year-old Piercy took advantage of superb scoring conditions by firing an eightunder 62 on the Hamilton Golf and Country Club course. “I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens today,” he said. “I was rolling the ball well, and obviously you’ve got to make some putts, too.” Piercy, who started on the 10th tee, eagled the par-five 17th and 4th holes on the rainsoftened course in the first round which included a 20minute weather delay. He also had five birdies and one bogey early in his round. England’s Owen and William McGirt, of the United States, were a stroke back at seven-under 63 and Robert Garrigus shot a 64. Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas, Aussie Stuart Appleby, South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel, Gavin Coles of Australia and Fiji’s Vijay Singh were part of a group of seven golfers at 65.
