Cops nail gym murder accused CRIME Mohd Subhan mohd.s@postnoon.com

T

he City police heaved a sigh of relief on Monday. The task force had been on its toes to nab the culprits behind the broad daylight murder of a youth in a city gym on IS Sadan Road in Kanchanbagh on Monday. And with the arrest of a former MIM corporator and his associates, the murder mystery and many other crimes are likely to be solved. It was the Task Force team that effected the tracking down of the corporator and his seven associates. Five more are to be nabbed. According to the police it was a gang of 13 that committed the heinous crime. Hamza Bin Omer alias Zaffer Pahalwan, 60, the gang leader arrested for the murder is notorious to be a terror. Zaffer and his henchmen are allegedly involved in many criminal cases including murders, attempts to murder, extortion, and abducting girls and sexually abusing them.

His (Pahalwan) game is now up. He had been a terror. People are now happy. AK Khan, Police Commissioner Talking about the arrest, the City police commissioner AK Khan described how happy the local

people appeared at the gang’s arrest. “People seem to be very happy and relaxed. Pahalwan had been a terror but his game is over,” Khan said. Task Force officials under the direct supervision AK Khan have also arrested Zaffer’s son-in-law Chotta Mohammed, an advocate by profession. Zaffer Pahalwan, whose fiefdom extended mostly in the areas of Reinbazaar police station, was involved in the murder of one

youth Salaam. The youth was murdered and his body was later thrown near the railway tracks at Tallabkatta area. Chotta Mohammed and Zaffer Pahelwan are also said to be running a private finance business and it was in connection with this business that Salaam was killed, said the Task Force DCP G Ramchander Rao. All these apart, several cases of murder and mayhem have been registered against him and his gang. Intriguingly Pahalwan was a rowdy sheeter with the Reinbazar police station but when he became corporator the stigma mysteriously. It was after Salaam’s murder case that Zaffer’s rowdy sheet case was reopened and his weapon license subsequently cancelled.

Former cop gone astray Zaffer Pahalwan had in vain contested from the Yakutpura assembly constituency in the last elections on MBT banner. But, his life story makes a startling reading. He was selected in the police department on account of his wrestling prowess. He had fought with many pahalwans in his time

Zaffer Pahalwan and his associates have been arrested and earned plaudit. It was after he attacked a sub inspector, Kazim Ali that he was eased out of the uniform. The pahalwan of 60 summers is said to have one legally wedded wife and nine concubines! Because of fear neither the locals nor the local police moved against him, senior officers now say. In fact, the gang had scripted a new story of murder and mayhem that can beat any Hollywood-Bollywood storyline.

ith another two suicides taking place, for the cause of Telangana in the backdrop, the TRS-called for a Telangana bandh today. While the bandh brought to halt normal life in all districts, the City remained unaffected. The bandh had, mercifully exempted the SSC examinations that began yesterday. But the degree examinations of Osmania, Palamuru (Mahbubnagar) and Mahatma Gandhi (Nalgonda) Universities have been deferred. The registrar of Osmania University V Kishan Rao announced the postponement of today’s exam following the bandh call and consequent protest events today. Barring the movement of APSRTC buses, which were given exemption in view of the ongoing SSC exams that commenced on Monday, traders, private business establishments, petrol bunks, cinema houses extended their support on a voluntary basis and remained closed for the day. In Medak, a bike rally by the Congress party was obstructed by Telangana activists leading to tension. In Osmania

Unviersity cops thwarted a rally taken out by TRS workers.

Hyderabad scene The City largely ignored the bandh. The local APSRTC buses and MMTS services remained unaffected and operated their services as usual. But the inter-city bus services of APSRTC have been cancelled by the authorities. A large number of passengers were stranded at various bus stations as a result of the cancellation of these inter-city services. Although the SSC exams were not disrupted by the bandh, parents were unwilling to take any risks. Examination centres across the City saw parents, especially mothers, come to drop their wards. Once the exam began, parents continued to wait outside the centre, anticipating trouble, to escort their children back home safely. Engineering colleges in the City are closed but schools are functioning as per schedule. Most CBSC and ISCE schools are on vacation but the SSC schools are functioning. “It’s half-day today and we are functioning normally,” says Padmaja W, Centenary Baptist Church School. Bazaar losing customers

NEWS BRIEFS Brown sugar worth `20 lakh seized

Lack of parking space and narrow, chaotic roads at Begum Bazaar are forcing shoppers to look at alternative destinations for wholesale products

he City task force made a big haul of brown sugar after nabbing a foreigner on Monday. The narcotics’ market worth is estimated to be `20 lakh. The catch was the result of months of efforts by the force under DCP G Ramchander Rao. It will throw light on drug rackets in the City, it is reported.

ith just two days left for the budget session to conclude, the House was as usual adjourned today soon after it assembled. The TRS reiterated its demand for a resolution on Telangana, while the TDP moved a resolution on suicides of youth on Telangana. The Chief Minister and home minister are likely to make a statement in this regard.

t’s one of the hottest shopping destinations in town. Flanked by shops on both sides of the road, Begum Bazaar has acquired the status of being ‘the’ destination for buying goods of all variety at wholesale prices. Also famous for steel trade, the area is visited by thousands of shoppers every single day. Touted to be one of the oldest markets in the City, the area is also known for its narrow and chaotic roads. Unfortunately, what drives shoppers out is the lack of proper parking facilities in the area. Being one of the oldest markets in the City, most of the bylanes are single lane roads and are often occupied by pick-up vans and delivery trucks. The customers who come here are left struggling to find space to park their vehicles. Although there aren’t many signs that prevent parking here, the narrow lanes make it impossible. What’s worse is that there isn’t a single designated parking area for motorists, who have to depend on luck to find suitable parking. Many of the shopkeepers are seen complaining about losing out on customers as a result of this. Santosh Steel Traders, a shop in the area, has estimated their sales dipping by about 20 per cent. “Most of the people who come here buy goods in large quantities. Ideally, the shoppers spend a decent amount of time deciding what to buy. But with the tension that their cars are parked on narrow streets constantly at the back of the mind, they buy in haste. In turn, what they can potentially buy, they don’t and we are at loss,” said Santosh Agarwal,

No alternative but to move Bill: Rajaiah

T

RS MLA Rajaiah today said that there was no alternative but to move a Bill in the parliament and pass a resolution in the Assembly for Telangana. Talking to the media at the Assembly, Rajaiah said that if a Bill is passed at the Parliament then there is no need for a resolution in the Assembly. He said that the BJP has already come forward for the Bill and resolution. If this is not done both Congress and TDP will be rejected by the people as they did during the bypolls. The very fact that they have resigned and got elected on the TRS ticket shows that the people are for Telangana. The government should not prolong the issue as it would be responsible for some more suicides.

‘Sorry, we can do only so much’ Lack of proper mechanism to address civic grievances that pour in is leading to a pile up of complaints

CIVIC Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

G

reater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the ‘second government’ of the State, is woefully falling short on redressing grievances. It has amassed a backlog of 8,000 unattended public grievances, and at this rate, it is afraid, the corporation will have on its hands a huge pileup of complaints which it will not be able to attend to. The corporation which has over 25,000 employees including contracted employees, has received nearly 18,000 public grievances during the past one year, of which, it has worked out 10,020 and the remainder will go as backlog, officials revealed. The grievances cover a wide gamut of issues like piling up of garbage in various localities due

to irregular clearing schedule, non-functioning of street lights, ill-maintained roads, construction without adhering to safety measures, noise pollution, stray dog menace and so on. Illegal digging of roads for development works, like illegal building constructions, encroachments of parks, illegal parking formed another bunch of complaints. A senior citizen blogged, “Most of these grievances are the result of corruption and apathy of the civic staff. They can’t blame the public for that.” Postnoon’s reality check reveals that the arrears amassed mainly because of the failure of the mid-level and lower-level functionaries who do not ensure prompt remedial measures. If we look at the statistics, till Thursday they received 18,167 complaints at their call center which is set up to take complaints through phones, in the last one year period. Out of these over

18,000 grievances, a total of 10,020 grievances have been addressed so far. A total of 7,545 grievances of residents of the corporation are yet to be solved by the GHMC staff. When Postnoon raised this question with the officials they said that basic problems like garbage lifting, road cleaning and other simple problems are solved immediately after receiving the complaints from the residents. They further add that complex problems like illegal building construction, encroachment of roads and footpaths and other violations are delayed due

f Telangana is delayed, the blame wholly and squarely goes to KCR’s TRS, says an angry Telangana TDP leader Motkupally Narsimhulu. The TDP leader today blamed the TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao for the suicides of the youths in the name of Telangana. He called it a macabre crime instigated by the TRS and it ought to be condemned. “Telangana is getting delayed as KCR is hand in glove with the Congress party from time to time,” Narsimhulu charged. “If KCR had no truck with the Congress, the Telangana state would have been achieved long ago,” he opined.

Narsimhulu said that the TDP was for achieving the Telangana state and reminded the party detractors that the TDP chief has already given his view several times over the issue. It was ridiculous blaming the TDP and Chandrababu Naidu for Telangana, he said. The Desam leader asked in what way can anybody blame TDP for Telangana as it was the parties that rule at the Centre and State which are responsible for it. He said it was the political chicanery at its worst in Telangana politics. The leader added that the party had made its stand clear long ago. The issue of Telangana is to be resolved only by the Union government and not by a regional party.

to various reasons. The GHMC additional commissioner (administration and legal) P Sai Kumar said, “Well, we receive many complaints from the residents every day. We immediately solve basic problems which require our intervention. But we can’t solve major and complex problems like illegal building constructions, encroachment of roads and footpaths because of various reasons including legal issues.” According to Kumar, lack of adequate staff and too much burden on the existing staff leads to delay in addressing many issues.

As per official statistics, the electrical wing of the corproation has topped the list of grievances in the last one year with 2,979 complaints followed by the Engineering wing with 2,979 complaints. Out of these, the electrical wing has disposed off 4,201 complaints. But a total of 106 complaints are still pending. When it comes to engineering wing, out of the total complaints, it could only solve 1,116 so far leaving 1,850 pending. The other crucial departments like town planning received a total of 2,043 complaints. Of these, they solved 1,171 complaints leaving 872 pending. Another crucial department of the corporation health & sanitation which is responsible for cleaning and sanitising of the City and keeping contagious diseases like malaria at bay, received a total of 2,018 complaints, it disposed off 934 grievances and left 1062 complaints unattended.

refreshing change from the humdrum life of a policeman. This summer some police stations have new visitors. The Hi-tech City and Gachibowli police stations have installed water troughs in their premises for animals and birds to quench their thirst. “In villages there are ponds and lakes but Hyderabad is a concrete jungle. Due to the extensive encroachment the poor animals are suffering. Hence to do our little bit we have installed these troughs. Our duty officer fills the trough at least twice a day,” says G Suresh, sub inspector, Madhapur with pride. With the mercury soaring past the 40 degrees mark not just humans but birds and animals are desperately seeking shelter from the scorching heat and looking around looking to quench their thirst. Understanding the needs of these animals Padmaja Bunda and Priyanka S from Caring Hands For Animals (CHFS) have installed water troughs free of cost in various parts of the City. “Each year the number of people dying due to summer heat is recorded but has anyone ever kept a track of the number of birds and animals that die each summer due to the scorching heat? No one really cares for them hence we have taken a small step to make some difference,” says Padmaja. Over the last one month they have installed more than 152 water troughs in Cyberabad. They started with their build-

ing first and then with the apartments in the colony followed by general stores and super markets. “We took the initiative and it’s so good to see many people come forward and support the initiative,” says Priyanka. “When they initially approached us with the idea, I hesitated. But after a couple of days I realised that it was a great initiative and now the feeling is amazing. I fill the water troughs more than three times a day. It gives a great sense of satisfaction,” said Biaswaraj Patil, a fruit vendor. Clearing the common misconceptions that people often have about water

Environment minister Jayanthi

COUNTDOWN TO 11TH CBD

Natarajan told Parliament that the country hopes to cut greenhouse emission by 20-25 per cent by 2025.We are not doing charity to the world. If we want to live, this half-hearted gesture will not help. One reason why India (Hyderabad City) was chosen for the world convention on biodiversity conference, COP 11, in October this year is because we are racing along the perilous path quicker than other nations. India has been ranked as the seventh most environmentally hazardous country in the whole world by a new ranking released recently. The study is based on evaluation of “absolute” environment impact of 179 countries, whose data was available and has been done by researchers in Harvard, Princeton, Adelaide University and University of Singapore on January 12, 2011. Brazil was found to be the worst on environmental indicators whereas Singapore was the best. The United States was rated second worst and China was ranked third. The issue is now clear. Any country which has a population pressure and fast economic development are the worst culprits in polluting this Earth. China, India, Brazil, the US are all examples. The COP 11 in Hyderabad is bound to focus on India’s wanton environment destruction and the world

“Without exaggeration, we can say: the future of our planet is at stake. Everything, people’s lives, the health of global economy, the very survival of some nations. Let us pull ourselves from the brink.” BAN-Ki-Moon, secretary general, United Nations would demand a time-bound, legally-binding commitment to restrict the population, cut down carbon emission, cleaner energy (now over dependence on thermal is harming it) and preservation of underground water for which green cover preservation is essential. On top of it all, melting of the Himalayan glacier if not stopped will lead to a 2 degree Celsius Will Hyderabad set the stage for India to launch a greener India for our children? It’s a $1.20 billion-dollar question. The President, Vice-President, PM are going to be here. If they fail, the world will curse us and history will bury us.

s the State continues its progress towards development, forest cover in the capital City and in the State have shown indicative results of declining forest area. In the AP Forest Department’s annual report for 2011, statistics indicate 10 per cent of forest cover loss. The State government’s attempts at trying to strike the right balance between environment and development seem to have fallen short of vision and execution. Being the fourth largest state in the country, AP has nearly 23 per cent forest cover. The Natural Forest Policy of India aims at maintaining 33 per cent of the country’s geographical area under forest and tree cover. This is crucial for us as India happens to be one of the seven “mega diverse” nations that act as carbon sinks for gas emissions. The loss of forest cover in the State has been attributed to three main reasons. Harvesting eucalyptus and teak plantations, extensive usage of trees for pulp manufacture, scrub growth and encroachments. Encroachments have been the main reason for green cover loss in and around Hyderabad. PK Sharma, additional PCCF of the AP Forest Department said, “The three reasons for this marginal loss of cover is mainly due to harvesting, extensive pulp manufacture and encroachments. Large chunks of eucalyptus and teak that have been harvested after maturity are in possession of the forest department and the Forest Urban department which account for 60 per cent of the total loss. Preparation of semi-forest areas for plantation is another significant factor. Last year a total loss of 25,000 hectares has been reported,” he said. Encroachments due to development and other factors is the key reason for the green cover loss. “The main reason for loss of

Fact file • 5,673 hectares of forest cover is lost due to fresh encroachments and balance 4,824 hectares due to plantations, harvesting of matured plantations and to some extent diversion of forest land for non-forestry purposes. • As negative change in forest cover due to raising of plantations and harvesting of plantations is only a management intervention, apparently the same is not considered as loss of forest cover. green cover is encroachment of forest lands. The greed for wood has lead to over habitation and cultivation of forest land. This accounts for 15 per cent of the total loss,” he said. “There are various biotic pressures that we deal with. For instance, every forest range officer’s beat ranges over 2,500 hectares as we face a severe manpower crunch. But efforts are on to tackle this problem. More number of mobile patrol units have been provided to keep track of their respective beats,” Sharma said. In their annual forest report issued by the AP Forest Department, 10 per cent of forest loss has been reported as a “meager/ marginal” loss thus conveying a non-existent positive picture. Hyderabad has a total forest cover area of 75,887 hectares. The total amount of forest area encroachment accounts to only a ‘meager’ 0.84 per cent as portrayed by the statistics issued by the AP Forest Department ie; a whopping 637.45 hectares of forest cover loss. The importance of issues such as forest encroachment have not been addressed nor have any remedies been suggested. Regulations and policies formulated to keep in check the amount of intake by pulp manufacturers, regular monitoring of scrub growth should be the need of the hour.

ost of the times, business is seen as an activity to make profits. Often, very few understand business is also livelihood and empowerment. For Y Tripuramba, it was this idea that was the driving force behind cofounding Dristi Associates. It all began when she went with three other colleagues to a slum to help them. “While, I was working at Andhra Bank, around 300 women employees from the head office got together and formed an informal organisation. We decided to adopt a slum opposite Raj Bhavan. Here we started a school for children and urged the women to form two dokhra (self help groups). These women then undertook bulk stitching orders for their empowerment in Vijaynagar colony,” she says. Following this, Tripuramba decided to give up her bank job to start Dristi Associates as a means to empower women. “I took voluntary retirement in 2001 after 28 years of service to co-found Dristi. The idea behind this business was to bring bulk orders from various retailers for these women, who had no other means of livelihood. Initially it was a challenging task, there were times when I had to go from door-to-door requesting for

Tripuramba, co-founder, Dristi Associates supervises employees clothes’ orders at wholesale markets. However, with time we’ve established our credibility and now various retailers and corporates recognise the quality of our work. Today, the clientele of Dristi include well-known schools, pharmaceuticals, hotels, cement factories and security agencies,” says a proud Tripuramba. Talking about the initial investment, she says, “The initial investment is `10 lakh that includes a `3 lakh bank loan. To begin with we had 25 employees. After 10 years, we have more than a 100 employees today. The employees who

began their career with `500 at that time have become skilled workers, earning around `10,000 per month.” One of the biggest challenges the company faces today is the migration of skilled workers. Employee loyalty has come down with time. With malls providing better pay and facilities, many of the women are taking up jobs as sales people for better prospects. “Due to inflation cost of production is rising. Last year petrol prices fluctuated 12 times and even cotton prices increased three times last year. It is difficult for us

to revise the annual contracts with corporates with these rising costs,” she says. These days 50 per cent of the total cost goes towards employee salaries as opposed to the earlier 33 per cent. However, order prices have not risen in proportion to production costs. Despite these challenges, the company’s core ideas have been retained. “I don’t just pay them their salaries, I also counsel them to open a bank account and have some savings. This can help them get loans in the future as well. We also provide free housing for people who come from other cities. We have several employees who completed their graduation and MBA through distance education while working with us,” she says. For now, Tripuramba is trying to work out a module through which they can offer their clients a better price while increase margins for the company as well. “However, the ongoing political agitation is a major concern. These agitations force us to close down for nearly 12 days in a month.” Dristi had a turnover of more than `1 crore last fiscal. It is aiming for similar revenues with 10 per cent margins this year. Tripuramba says, “There is no growth in the top line due to recession and political agitations. However, we have maintained the revenues even during the time of decline in industrial output.”

Apple eyes China for expansion programmes BEIJING: Apple Inc said it was eyeing greater investment and growth in China as its chief executive Tim Cook visited Beijing Monday. The US electronics giant confirmed that Cook had meetings with Chinese officials and informed them about the company’s plans. He also visited an Apple store at Joy City Mall in the busy Xidan shopping area in downtown Beijing. Cook had a short stay at the store on Monday morning when he posed for pictures with customers, one staff recalled, Xinhua reported. Cook’s first China visit as Apple’s CEO triggered speculation that Apple might change its market strategy towards China, Apple’s biggest market outside his home market. Apple’s founder

and former CEO Steve Jobs, who died last October, never visited China. Apple usually starts selling its iconic iPhone and iPads in China months after debuting them in the US and other major markets. The practice has triggered complaints from Apple fans and also led to opportunities for scalpers on the black market. China Telecom, the country’s third-largest mobile carrier, joined its bigger rival China Unicom in selling the iPhone early the month, bringing Apple tens of millions of potential customers. But not all is going well for Apple in China, as it is currently locked in a legal dispute with Chinese electronics firm Proview Shenzhen over the rights to use the “iPad” trademark in the country. Nation losing $1m every day due to idle Kudankulam nuclear plants NEW DELHI: Ahead of President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to India, Russian Ambassador Alexander M Kadakain said the agreements for the units III and IV of the Kudankulam nuclear plant were “almost ready”. Moscow, he underlined, was hoping that the nuclear liability law won’t apply to them. Medvedev will touch down here on Wednesday on a two-day visit during which he will participate in the BRICS summit of the five emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The civil nuclear co-operation is expected to figure prominently in bilateral talks. The Russian envoy welcomed the resumption of work at the Russia-built Kudankulam nuclear plant and said the stalling of the work at the plant due to agitations spearheaded by NGOs in Tamil Nadu had cost around $1 million to India every day over the last six months. The total loss to India worked out to around $180 million, he added. “It’s long overdue. From October to March, it was India which was losing $1 million every day. The plant was lying idle but the work has now resumed. That’s a welcome step,” he said. It could take another four to

File photo of a typical nuclear reactor. six months for the plant to start production, said the envoy. After nearly six months, work at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) resumed with

around 950 technical and nontechnical personnel and 100 Russian technocrats after the Tamil Nadu cabinet resolution on early commissioning of the plant.

India’s atomic power plant operator, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), is building two 1,000MW reactors at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district,

around 650km from Chennai. The Russian envoy also struck an upbeat note on the trajectory of nuclear co-operation between India and Russia. “The agreements are almost ready and almost initialled. Some minor matters remain to be negotiated,” the Russian envoy said while referring to Moscow’s plan to go ahead with building units III and IV at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu. The envoy also stressed that Russia hoped that India’s civil nuclear liability will not apply to these new units as they were part of earlier agreements which predated the liability regime. “We hope the same terms will apply to units III and IV. Nuclear liability is a latter invention,” he said. Besides Kudankulam, the envoy said, Russia was expecting India to formally propose another site to it after the proposal for locating a nuclear facility in Haripur in West Bengal was opposed by the Trinamool Congress. The new site for Russia is expected to be announced after Manmohan Singh’s talks with Medvedev on Wednesday. “We are in complete agreement with India to go ahead with the serial production of nuclear plants in India,” he said while referring to the nuclear roadmap sealed by the two countries in 2010. Despair of abducted sailors’ families Sanu George

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The families of seven Indian sailors, on board MV Asphalt Venture that was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2010, are wondering why the Indian government is taking so long to secure the release of the sailors. Some of them are to accompany Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy when he goes to New Delhi today (Tuesday) to discuss the issue with the central government. The Panama-flagged vessel MV Asphalt Venture, owned by a joint venture of a British and Middle-East company, got hijacked by pirates near Tanzania while on way to Durban from Mombasa, Kenya on Sep 28, 2010. Since then the misery for the sailors and their families has been enormous. Last April, the pirates released eight other sailors, but continued to keep the Indian sailors hostage. Of the seven sailors, two are

from Kerala and their families are pinning their hope on Oommen Chandy to pressurise the central government for the sailors’ release. Speaking to IANS, Chandy said he has met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and several Cabinet ministers on the matter. “On Tuesday I am in Delhi and the families of these victims will also be there. We will again make one more attempt to see that some action is done. The sufferings of these people have gone beyond limits,” said Chandy. Mercy George, a schoolteacher and wife of 49-year-old George Joseph, first engineer on board the ship, told IANS that she is mentally and physically drained. “On Jan 1 my husband called me from where he is kidnapped and we spoke for some time. Since then there has been no contact. I have been to Delhi two times and now again I am going. We are expecting the family members of the others also who are in captivity to come and plead our case,” said

Mercy. However, Shobha Krishnan, wife of 59-year-old BN Unnikrishnan, the second officer of the ill-fated ship said she finds no hope in travelling to Delhi. “I once met the prime minister and still nothing has happened. My husband was an Indian Navy official who retired from service in 1987. After serving in the Merchant Navy soon after his retire-

ment, he met with an accident and for 15 years he was unable to go for work. In 2010 April he re-joined the Merchant Navy and joined this company. We are all down and out because if he had not re-joined, we would not have undergone this ordeal,” remarked Shobha. Incidentally, the families of the kidnapped sailors had to approach a court in Mumbai last year

when the salaries stopped coming. “It was through a court decision that we got four months’ salary dues last month. I have filed a habeas corpus petition in the High Court last week and it has been accepted. The government has been given two weeks’ time to file its statement,” added Shobha. Chandy said that around 100 Somalian nationals are in custody in various jails in the country and the pirates want their release. “A few cases are currently going on in a various courts in the country. We are meeting the External Affairs minister to see that the cases are speeded up. We will do our best to get our men released,” said Chandy. “See the way the Italian government is pursuing the case of their marines here. They are so determined... while we have been waiting for several months. The least the Indian government can do is to make a speedy trial of the cases against the arrested Somalians here,” added Mercy.

SEOUL: The best guarantee for nuclear safety is a world free of nuclear weapons, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Tuesday, calling for a multilateral framework for achieving this. He also announced a contribution of $1 million to the IAEA’s Nuclear Security Fund for 2012-13. “The best guarantee for nuclear security is a world free from nuclear weapons,” Manmohan Singh said while addressing the plenary of the Nuclear Security Summit here. “Attaining the goal of a nuclear weapon-free world will require commitments embedded in an agreed multilateral framework involving all states possessing nuclear weapons. This should include measures to reduce nuclear dangers by reducing the salience of nuclear weapons in security doctrines and by increasing universal restraints on the first use of nuclear weapons,” Manmohan Singh added. He noted in this context that former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi had put forward an action plan for global nuclear disarmament in a timebound framework almost 25 years ago and that this “remains the most comprehensive and elaborate proposal to achieve this objective”. Pointing to India’s track record in guarding

sensitive technologies, Manmohan Singh described as “the next logical step” the country’s membership of nuclear clubs like the NSG and MTCR. “India has never been a source of proliferation of sensitive technologies and we are determined to further strengthen our export control systems to keep them on par with the highest international standards. We have already adhered to the guidelines of the NSG and MTCR. As a like-minded country with the ability and

willingness to promote global non-proliferation objectives, we believe that the next logical step is India’s membership of the four export control regimes,” he said. (The other two are the Australia Group and the Wassennar Arrangement.) Manmohan Singh also said India supported the early commencement of negotiations on a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. While nuclear security was primarily a national responsibil-

ity, “there are benefits to be gained by supplementing responsible national actions through sustained and effective international co-operation,” the prime minister said, adding, “The IAEA has a central role in strengthening the international global nuclear security architecture. I am happy to announce that India will contribute $1 million to the IAEA’s Nuclear Security Fund for 2012-13. India will also participate in the Agency’s 2013 international coordinating conference of various nuclear security activities, including the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism and the Global Partnership. According to Manmohan Singh, nuclear terrorism will remain a potent threat as long as there are terrorists seeking to gain access to nuclear material and technologies for malicious purposes. “India is acutely conscious of this threat. Our resolution at the General Assembly on measures to deny terrorists access to weapons of mass destruction has been adopted by consensus since 2002.” Holding that India “fully shares” global concerns on nuclear terrorism and clandestine proliferation, the prime minister added, “Given India’s growing energy demands, we see nuclear energy as an essential component of our energy mix.”

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray Tuesday questioned the relevance of the anti-corruption crusade by veteran activist Anna Hazare and his team members. In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray said that for the first time since Hazare's "flop show" in Mumbai in December last year, Team Anna had again featured in the news. "The Team's members like Prashant Bhushan faced public ire, Arvind Kejriwal was greeted with slippers, Kiran Bedi's corrupt activities tumbled out, Swami Agnivesh was out of the Team when the agitation was at a peak, India Against Corruption's Mumbai head is embroiled in questionable activities," he added.

Corporate governor policy shortly: Moily PUNE: Union Corporate Affairs Minister M Veerappa Moily today said that the new Companies Bill would come up shortly for consideration before the parliament. Speaking to select corporate leaders after releasing a paper on "Corporate Governance” prepared by Pune International Centre, he also stated that the national corporate governance policy would be ready in about six months time. "This would be preceded by a series of consultations so that adequate input is taken from corporate world," the minister added. Moily said a Citibank report has indicated that in 39 years, India will be the number one economy of the world ahead of China and the US.

Indian student jailed Bangalore student is Space Lab winner in Oz in visa scam Arun Kumar Paritosh Parasher

MELBOURNE: A Perth-based Indian student will spend 14 months in jail for his involvement in a scam to falsify English test scores to get Australian visas. Rajesh Kumar, 31, faced ten charges for his part in fraudulently altering the International English Testing System (IELTS) scores at Perth’s Curtin University between November 2009 and June 2010. A Perth District Court sentenced Rajesh Kumar on Monday after he pleaded guilty for changing the outcomes of IELTS test apparently to get permanent residence in Australia. Nine other persons have already been jailed in a scam to increase the IELTS scores to get permanent residence in Australia. The list includes Kok Keith Low, a Curtin University English Language Centre

employee who would be behind the bars for two years for playing the key role in falsifying the scores for various, mostly, Indian students. Anyone achieving a score of a minimum 7.0 in four IELTS components gets extra points in the skilled points test to get permanent residence in Australia. Rajesh Kumar was found guilty of taking a total of $32,000 from three IELTS candidates applying for Australian visas. He kept $14,000 for himself while giving remainder to an intermediary Pritesh Shah. The latter paid some of this bribe to Kok Keith Low who would then falsify the score at Curtin University’s IELTS test centre. The former Indian student had earlier paid $5,000 to Shah to get his own IELTS score changed to enable him to apply for an Australian visa.

India’s Sachin S Kukke is the AsiaPacific region winner and one of six global winners of the YouTube Space Lab 2012 contest for young people to design experiments that could be performed in outer space. The winners of the contest by YouTube and Lenovo, in co-operation with Space Adventures, NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) were announced at a ceremony at the Newseum here on Friday. Kukke’s experiment explores transfer of heat in ferrofluid — a special liquid that gets magnetised when subjected to a magnetic field. The study can benefit development of advanced cooling and heat transfer systems. A student of mechanical engineering at the BMS

College for Engineering in Bangalore, Kukke called on Indian Ambassador to the US Nirupama Rao and shared his experience of conceptualising and carrying out innovative scientific experiments, an Indian Embassy release said. Warmly congratulating Kukke on his achievement, Rao said that in India, a country engaged in rapid economic development, “students like Sachin symbolise the hopes and potential of a dynamic, resurgent India and it’s young population”. She encouraged Kukke to pursue his goals and interests in the specialised area of aerospace engineering and wished him the very best in the years ahead. Kukke was accompanied by Lee Hunter, head of brand marketing for YouTube, and Claudio Lilienfeld, senior policy manager for Asia Pacific at Google.

Bengal to set up rescue centres for stray jumbos KOLKATA: In a bid to reduce manelephant conflict and rehabilitate jumbos driven away from the herd, the West Bengal government is planning to set up two 'Elephant Rescue Centres' on a pilot basis. "Instances of elephants straying away from the forests have been on the rise, resulting in man-elephant conflicts in the state. The stray elephants often destroy crops or kill humans or are killed in the process," West Bengal Forest Minister Hiten Barman told. "In order to rehabilitate the stray jumbos, we plan to set up two rescue centres of 100 acre each in north and south Bengal. Currently, a survey is on to locate locations of the centres and a report of the same is expected this month," he added.

Hitler shampoo ad not such a hit A

Turkish shampoo advertisement featuring Adolf Hitler has drawn condemnation from Jewish groups around the world. The 12 second advertisement for Biomen began airing last week, and, as NewsCore explains, shows a gesticulating Hitler delivering an enthusiastic speech urg-

ing male customers to buy the product. "If you are not wearing a woman's dress, you should not use her shampoo either. Here it is, a real men’s shampoo, Biomen," he says. The Anti-Defamation League says it is "repulsed" by the advertisement, and has written to

Turkey's Ambassador to the US, Namik Tan. "The use of images of the violently anti-Semitic dictator who was responsible for the mass murder of 6 million Jews and millions of others in the Holocaust to sell shampoo is a disgusting and deplorable marketing ploy," the League's National Director,

razilian police are looking for a gang of beautiful, young women suspected of being behind a series of kidnappings and robberies in shopping malls around the Brazilian capital Sao Paulo. In three years the gang has targeted at least 50 people, mostly wealthy women, in so-called express kidnappings. Police have reportedly begun to break up the gang, with three suspects arrested over the weekend, including one man thought to have co-ordinated the operations. AFP describes how members of the gang follow women leaving shopping malls, rob them and

then uses their credit cards to buy expensive, luxury items. In one case, they bought 17,500 reales (US$9,700) worth of items with the cards, and took out more than 3,000 reales (US$1,660) in cash. Police have described the gang as consisting of "young, educated, middle-class women," according to the BBC. They are really pretty girls, well-dressed and made up." GLOBAPOST

King of Kink’s photos curated by wife PARIS: Four women stride towards the camera with heads held high, liberated beauties on the march, completely naked save for their high heels and trim 1980s hairdos: welcome to Helmut Newton's world. Titled "Sie Kommen" (They're Coming), the giant print, which comes in two versions, one nude and one power-dressed, is part of a major Paris retrospective of the photographer's provocative, erotic body of work, the first since he died in 2004. Curated by his wife of 60 years June Newton, together with France's national museum body, the show at the Grand Palais features more than 200 prints, with

work for fashion bibles such as Vogue or Elle shown alongside nudes and portraits. "You can see all the facets of Helmut, every single photo tells a story," June Newton told a press conference ahead of the opening on Saturday. "Helmut Newton did what no photographer before him dared to do. He broke taboos, he broke the forms, the codes of photography," said her co-curator Jerome Neutres. "The perfect fashion photo should look like something out of a movie, a souvenir shot, a paparazzi shot -- anything but a fashion photograph," Newton said in a documentary shot by his wife,

screened as part of the show. So Newton captured his models striding two-by two down a flight of stairs, at nighttime in the cobbled streets of Paris, posing with meteorites as futuristic props, or sprinting down a runway away from an approaching airplane. Even when naked, Newton's women are powerful figures, most spectacularly staring out at the camera from the "Big Nudes" series that dominates the main room, inspired by German police photos of terrorist suspects. There is nothing natural about his many nudes, who always keep their stilettos on. These are bourgeois, elegant

women. But they are not sex objects. For his portraits Newton chose figures that included Margaret Thatcher, Liz Taylor or Catherine Deneuve: "women who each dominate their world," said Neutres. That said, Newton loved to challenge the boundaries of taste, staging steamy sex scenes with fashion mannequins, or using bondage gear or medical apparatus as props, his edgier work earning the moniker of "Porno Chic". "He loved all those things they called him -- 'Porno Chic', 'King of Kink' -- he loved that one!' joked June Newton. AFP

Syria uses child soldiers as Annan tries hard for peace AFP/RICARDO GARCIA VILANOVA

DAMASCUS:

Syrian forces pressed their assault across the country on Monday as international peace envoy Kofi Annan stressed that there could be no deadline to ending the year-long crisis. A UN official meanwhile said they were investigating reports that Syrian rebels were using child soldiers in their battle against President Bashar alAssad’s forces. Clashes were reported in the central flashpoint city of Homs, in Damascus province and other areas, leaving at least 32 people dead, including 19 civilians. At least 16 people including four soldiers and two children died as regime forces pounded several neighbourhoods of Homs. In Damascus province, seven soldiers and five civilians were killed in clashes in two towns — Harasta and Zabadani. The violence came as Annan, the United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria, said no time limit could be set to ending the revolt against the Assad’s regime, which erupted last March. “I think only Syrians should decide the issue of Assad’s resignation,” Annan told Russian news agencies in remarks translated into Russian.

A member of Free Syrian Army gives food to a Syrian refugee family as they wait to cross to Turkey. “It’s important to sit all Syrians behind a negotiating table,” he said, speaking a day after meeting Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The former UN chief said it was “incorrect to give any deadlines” for ending the violence in Syria, in which more than 9,100 people have already been killed, according to monitors. Medvedev had warned on Sunday that Annan represented the last chance for avoiding a civil war in Syria, promising him Russia’s full support. Annan is to hold talks on Tuesday with Chinese leaders in Beijing, who he has said he hopes

will also back his mission. Russia and China have vetoed previous resolutions condemning Assad’s regime, but last week backed a UN Security Council peace plan for Syria put forward by the UN-Arab League envoy. Annan’s plan calls for a halt to fighting, with the government pulling troops and heavy weapons out of protest cities; a daily two-hour humanitarian pause to hostilities; and access to all areas affected by the fighting. It also calls for the release of people detained in the uprising. However it imposes no deadline on Assad, nor does it call for his

resignation. The former UN chief’s spokesman said in a statement on Monday that Damascus had responded to the six-point proposal to end the crisis. “Mr Annan is studying it and will respond very shortly,” he said. Medvedev, whose government has come under increasing pressure to act on Syria, discussed the crisis in Seoul with US President Barack Obama on Monday. Afterwards, Obama acknowledged there had been disagreements in recent months between the United States and Russia, an ally of Assad’s regime. But he said both agreed “we should be supportive of Kofi Annan’s efforts to end some of the bloodshed that is taking place in Syria”, and that the goal was to have a “legitimate” government in Damascus. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is to visit Saudi Arabia on Saturday and Sunday for talks on Syria, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said. Ahead of Annan’s visit Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Beijing “hopes this visit will allow indepth discussions on a political resolution of the Syrian issue”. AFP

Obama in soup over flexibility talk SAN

DIEGO:

Republicans pounced on Monday on US President Barack Obama’s remark that he could be more flexible with Russia over a controversial missile defense deal if he is reelected in November. In remarks overheard on an open microphone, Obama told President Dmitry Medvedev that with a hard-fought presidential vote looming, he has little maneuvering room to address Moscow’s objections to the US missile shield. “This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility,” Obama is heard to tell the Russian leader at a meeting in the sidelines of a nuclear security summit in South Korea. The president’s comments triggered criticism from Republicans at home including White House frontrunner Mitt Romney who called them “an alarming and troubling development.” “President Obama signaled that he’s going to cave to Russia on missile defense, but the American

And he said “This is no time for our president to be pulling his

punches with the American people, and not telling us what he’s intending to do with regards to our missile defense system and with regard to our absolute conviction that Iran must have a nuclear weapon.” A Romney spokeswoman later told AFP that Romney misspoke and meant to say Iran should not have a nuclear weapon. bama on Tuesday hit back at Republicans over the missile defence row. Obama complained that the volatile political environment in the US was not conducive to in-depth consideration of delicate issues like defence and arms control. “The only way I get this stuff done is if I’m consulting with the Pentagon, with Congress, if I’ve got bipartisan support,” Obama told reporters. “Frankly, the current environment is not conducive to those kinds of thoughtful consultations. I think the stories you guys have been writing over the last 24 hours is pretty good evidence of that.” White House explained it was committed to implementing a missile defence shield in Europe despite Russian objections, but longstanding hurdles meant it would take time to conclude a deal. Editorials WHY NOW Venerable General?

I

t is commonplace in a country that has a dubious distinction of languishing at number 95 in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) that very many officers who hold high positions, at one time or the other have been offered bribes. Depending on their integrity, they have either quietly rejected such offers or even more quietly accepted them. It is strange that our venerable General chooses to air it two years later and to the media at that. In such a situation, spontaneity of the reaction holds a lot of importance. Should the victim decide to take action by way of filing a case under the provision of the Prevention of Corruption Act right away, the results are effective. Reminiscing in public that too while still in service is hardly the done thing. The top brass in the Army is bound by service rules that prohibit such public discourses. It is the hobby of retired officers of the government to come out with semi-biographical accounts of their service details that stirs up a hornet’s nest in the beginning and then are relegated as passé, or if the contents are that shocking, get buried in investigation reports and gather dust. An important factor for India being stable is the neutrality of its armed forces unlike our neighbouring countries where interference in civilian matters has undermined the governance structures of those countries. This neutrality is maintained by strict Dos and Don’ts that service personnel need to follow during their service tenure. Breaking such rules with impunity bodes ill, for it relaxes discipline and sets a trend others might follow.

How about pinching the FM’s wallet? Hard Talk PK Surendran

he pipe-smoking FM (who had no qualm taxing smokers high) could have done well to take a look at the administrative and maintenance cost of 788 MPs. Each one directly cost the treasury `2.20 lakh (salary and giant perks) while the per capita income of an average Indian works out to less than `4,500 a year. What these ‘honourable’ members have contributed to the wellbeing of 1.20 billion people of whom 30 per cent are steeped in poverty is a mystery to me, probably you know better. But here is the revealing firsthand account of journalist-turned-Rajya Sabha-MP Pritish Nandy in a blog. “Everyone called me sir, not because of my age but because I was an MP. I revelled in the fact that I could have gone anywhere I liked, on any train, first class with a bogey reserved for my family. And yes, whenever I wrote to any Government officer to help someone in need, it was done. No, not because I was a journalist but because I was an MP. The job had many perquisites, apart from the tax-free wage of `4,000, later raised to `16,000, with office expenses of `20,000 and a constituency allowance of `20,000 thrown in. I could borrow interest-free money to buy a car, get my petrol paid for and make as many free phone calls as I wanted. My home also came free. So did the furniture, the electricity, the water, the gardeners and the plants. There were also allowances to wash curtains and sofa covers and a rather funny allowance of Rs1,000 per day to attend Parliament, which I always thought was an MP's job in the first place! And, oh yes, we also got `1 crore a year (now enhanced to `2 crore) to spend on our constituencies. Today, out of 543 MPs in Lok Sabha, 315 are crorepatis. That's 60 per cent. A good 43 out of the 54 newly elected Rajya Sabha MPs are also millionaires. Their average declared assets are over `25 crore each. That's an awfully wealthy lot of people in whose hands

Pets and petting

Your story on page 2 about maids was completely true. No matter how much you pay them, they still have their list of endless demands that we, as employers need to adhere to. The last maid in my house in Somajiguda, was quite eager to come and work for me. She did that for six months and then asked for a week off as her brother was getting married. She disappeared after that. When I tried looking for maids, every single one of them refused. Why? Because I had cats and my maid had told everyone that I forced her to pick up cat poop!

What people who own pets need to understand that everyone that moves and doesn't talk cannot be owned. Pets, especially puppies or kittens are like human babies and are in need of constant love and affection. The story on Fighter's Last battle was heart wrenching and I was shedding tears of anger. Pet owners need to be educated about the kind of pets they own. Pet dealers should educate the persons buying pets from them on proper care and treatment before selling these speechless cuties. we have vested our destiny. The assets of your average Lok Sabha MP have grown from `1.86 crore in the last house to `5.33 crore. That's 200 per cent more. If you think it pays to be in the ruling party, you are dead right: 7 out of 10 MPs from the Congress are crorepatis. The BJP has 5. MPs from some of the smaller parties like SAD, TRS and JD (Secular) are all crorepatis while the NCP, DMK, RLD, BSP, Shiv Sena, National Conference and Samajwadi Party have more crorepatis than the 60 per cent average. Disgusting reading? I don’t know; it is a common taxpayer’s thought. Tailend: An MP in Kerala, during the last general elections, found his wallet picked in the milling multitude at a meeting venue. Blame game continues Parking woes in Banjara Hills need no introduction. Almost every day, there's a huge traffic jam even during nonpeak hours as most of the car owners keep looking around for places to park. I understand that the police and GHMC's top priority is to ensure smooth flow of traffic, but this should not be done at the expense of causing inconvenience to vehicle owners. GHMC has not taken into account the stellar rise in number of car owners in the city.

Finding “the” job!

Last week, we offered tips on how to compile a perfect CV. This week we tell you how to get it across to potential employers around the globe.

HR consultant Supretha Amancherla

F

inding a job in the 21st century is one of the easiest tasks provided you know how to. If the job seeker is in sync with today's technology, there are chances that he will land the job of his dreams, within the luxury of his home, a dingy Internet centre or even through the phone. With online job portals such as Monster and Naukri, searching for a job within his area of expertise, is made simple. Sites like these would require you to fill in personal information followed by uploading an updated CV. This way attending walk-in interviews can be avoided. Once you have completed this formality, it is then sent across to various companies who are hiring candidates with specific qualifications. Following this, he/she may receive an email notification or a phone call depending on the job availability. Another way of getting that job you desire would be to visit a reputed recruitment consultancy where the job seeker would have one round of personal interview with an HR recruiter with whom he would leave a copy of the CV . The HR would then intimate and guide them to a suitable company’s interview. Not leaving out the option of walk-in interviews completely, the new option of online job search and job consultancy could prove to be a boon to many job seekers. couple of decades ago, searching for a job and then applying for it meant heaps of paperwork. Eager job hunters would devour stacks of newspapers looking for vacancies and when they found something interesting, they would immediately update their CV, pop it in an envelope and send it to the postal address mentioned. It would take days before it would land on the desk of a potential employer. Of late, there has been a lot of change since most of the activities can be accomplished on the internet. Searching for a job in the 21st century is not a Herculean task anymore. There are quite a number of ways to go about this. Here are a few options:

NETWORKING Let’s admit it; word of mouth is the best way to land a job.

ODD JOBS Mini Singh

Friends, previous employers, colleagues, teachers and acquaintances are all potential contacts who can help you land your dream job. Make sure to let them know that you are out in the job market and what you are seeking. If you have an extensive network, many opportunities will come your way.

JOB PORTALS When you are hunting for a job, make sure to leave no stone unturned. One of the most accessible ways to find a job is through job portals or websites online. They have been around for a while and are trustworthy. Not only do they offer access to reputed companies and MNCs within the comfortable confines of your living room, but are also free, easy and extremely effective.

CONSULTANTS Unlike job portals online, consultants or recruitment agencies add the human touch. You

could easily rely on them as they act as middlemen between job seekers and organisations and help them find each other. Consultancies also offer advice like how to fine-tune your CV and land a job with confidence as they have the insight on how companies work and all these are free of charge. Hussain Khan, General Manager of Personal Staffing, Team Lease says that interaction with the candidate and the recruiter is very important. “Meeting a candidate gives us a deeper insight into what he is looking for in a job and helps us in analysing his strength and weaknesses. An employer is most interested in knowing about your past achievements be it at work or when you were in school. This way they are able to analyse whether you can think out of the box or not.”

APPLYING ON COMPANY WEBSITES The plus point about applying

directly on a company’s website is that you would be aware of the latest job openings and would have read and understood the job requirements before filling in the application. But on the downside, this process may be lengthy and it often takes more time than usual as compared to applying through a consultancy.

THINGS TO REMEMBER No matter what sort of channels you apply through, here are a few things that you need to keep in mind. a) Be honest about your background. b) Be diligent and make sure to follow up. c) Do not nag or get obsessive. d) Be patient. Remember, finding the perfect job takes time. e) Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to as many companies as possible.

Allergies to beware of Summer’s not just about fun and play. Thanks to the thriving bacteria, the heat, dry weather and dust, allergies abound Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

W

ho would’ve thought allergies that bothered you in the spring could carry forward into the glorious summer to put a spanner in your vacation or picnic plans? But despite popular perception that allergies are part and parcel of springs and monsoons, they do persist in the summer as well. Add to that the Hyderabadi heat, dust and pollution and you have a recipe for disaster. Come summer and the dry weather is the perfect catalyst for carrying pollen and dust. So respiratory problems can cause breathing and wheezing problems. Pulmonologists warn that for people who are pre-disposed to respiratory illnesses, this can wreak havoc, simply because their immune system release antibodies to combat allergens, which then leads to the release of histamines in the blood. These in turn trigger a runny nose,

itchy eyes and other allergic symptoms. However, the incidence of asthma remains less. Over exposure to the sun can also induce frequent headaches. So staying out of the sun is advisable, or at least avoiding the

peak hours can help (between 12 pm and 4 pm). Added to this is the scorching heat and blazing sun that can then cause various skin allergies. “People with photosensitive skin face problems during the sum-

mers. Exposure to the sun can cause their skin to break out into rashes that can be itchy and leave ugly scabs on the body,” says Dr Aftab Ahmed, consultant physician at Apollo Hospital. “More than 70 per cent of the

TAME THE SUN rashes that people suffer from during the summer are a result of allergies to the heat. In kids, especially the risk of allergic contact dermatitis increases,” says Dr Kasi Viswanath, a paediatrician. People with sensitive skin often get skin allergies as a consequence of the epidermis coming into contact with allergens. Thanks to the increasing heat, water intake increases. If the water consumed is not clean it could lead to stomach allergies. “We see a rise in the number of people suffering from diarrhoea in the summers. Gastrointestinal infections are very common in this season,” says Dr Ahmed. The best way to prevent these is to take precautions like consuming fresh food, clean water, staying out of the sun in the afternoons and using protective measures like scarves and sunscreens when stepping out during the day. When it comes to respiratory allergies, taking antihistamines can help. For rashes there are ointments. However, these should be done after consulting a doctor.

Dental bugs may trigger fatal heart condition LONDON: Mouth bugs seeping into the bloodstream can cause blood clots and trigger endocarditis or inflammation of heart’s inner tissues, which could be fatal. Infective endocarditis is treated with surgery or by strong antibiotics - which is becoming more difficult with growing antibiotic resistance. “About 30 per cent of people with infective endocarditis die and most will require surgery for replacement of the infected heart valve with a metal or animal valve,” said Helen Petersen from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) who led the study. Streptococcus gordonii is a mouth bug which contributes to plaque formation on teeth. If they enter the blood stream through bleeding gums, they can wreak havoc by impersonating as human proteins. Researchers from the RCSI and the University of Bristol have discovered that S. gordonii is able to produce a molecule on its surface that lets it mimic the human pro-

tein fibrinogen - a blood-clotting factor. This activates the platelets, causing them to clump inside blood vessels. These unwanted blood clots encase the bacteria, protecting them from the immune system and from antibiotics that might be used to treat, according to a Royal College statement. Platelet clumping can lead to growths on the heart valves (endocarditis), or inflammation of blood vessels that can block the blood supply to the heart or brain. “Our team has now identified the critical components of the S. gordonii molecule that mimics fibrinogen, so we are getting closer to being able to design new compounds to inhibit it. This would prevent the stimulation of unwanted blood clots,” said Steve Kerrigan from the RCSI. These findings were presented at the Society for General Microbiology’s Spring Conference in Dublin this week. IANS

Raisins and soy may ward off high blood pressure

FITNESS TIPS

Get rid of shoulder pain S

houlder pain can be a major trouble. Here are some simple tips to get relief from this pain and also prevent it. n

Pendulum stretching exercise

Stretching exercises help to maintain the shoulder and joint flexibility as well as mobility. For this kind of exercise, gently bend over with your arm hanging vertically. Then, start stretching with the arm for the first few days. After a few days use light weights (or if you want a bottle of water) and gradually expand the diameter of the movement circle. n

CHICAGO: Eating raisins and soy appears to help ward off high blood pressure, a key risk factor in heart disease, according to two studies presented at a major US cardiology conference on Sunday. Munching on a handful of raisins three times a day helped people with slightly elevated blood pressure lower their numbers after several weeks, said one of the studies presented at the American College of Cardiology conference. The randomised clinical trial — believed to be the first formal measurement of raisins’ benefits on blood pressure — involved 46 people with a condition known as pre-hypertension. That means their blood pressure ranged from 120 over 80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) to 139 millimeters of mercury over 89 mm Hg, or just higher than normal. Compared to people who snacked on cookies or crackers, the raisin-eating group saw significant drops in blood pressure, in some cases lowering the top number, or systolic pressure, by 10.2, or seven percent over the 12week study. Researchers are not sure exactly why the raisins work so well, but they think it may have to do with the high level of potassium in the shriveled, dried grapes. “Raisins are packed with potassium, which is known to lower blood pressure,” said lead

investigator Harold Bays, medical director of Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center. “They are also a good source of antioxidant dietary fibre that may favourably alter the biochemistry of blood vessels, causing them to be less stiff, which in turn, may reduce blood pressure.” A handful of about 60 raisins contains a gram of fibre and 212 milligrams of potassium. Raisins are often recommended as part of a high-fibre, low-fat diet to reduce blood pressure. A second study on soy showed that daily intake of foods like tofu, peanuts and green tea helped lower blood pressure in more than 5,100 white and African American people aged 18-30. The study began in 1985 and was based on self-reported data about the food the participants ate. Those who consumed about 2.5 or more milligrams of

isoflavones, a key component in soy, per day had significantly lower systolic blood pressure — an average of 5.5 mmHg lower — than those who ate less than 0.33 mg per day. That daily level should not be hard for most people to reach — a glass of soy milk contains about 22 mg of isoflavones, or nearly 10 times the amount needed to see an effect, according to the research. “Our results strongly suggest a blood pressure benefit for moderate amounts of dietary isoflavone intake in young black and white adults,” said Safiya Richardson, a graduating medical student at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and the study’s lead investigator. “Our study is the first to show a benefit in African Americans, who have a higher incidence of high blood pressure, with an earlier onset and

more severe end-organ damage.” Eating soy could be a way for people with slightly elevated blood pressure to avoid progressing to high blood pressure, and potentially ward off the need to take medications, she added. “Any dietary or lifestyle modification people can easily make that doesn’t require a daily medication is exciting, especially considering recent figures estimating that only about one third of American hypertensives have their blood pressure under control.” Soy and the isoflavones it contains work by boosting enzymes that create nitric oxide, which in turns helps to widen blood vessels and reduce blood pressure. “Based on our results and those of previous studies, we would encourage the average adult to consider including moderate amounts of soy products in a healthy, well-balanced diet to reduce the chances of developing high blood pressure,” Richardson said. While the former will play gangster Karim Lala, the latter will feature as young Haji Mastan in the movie going on floors in May. The Rs.20 crore budgeted Mastaan will be set in the 1980s. B-TOWN TWEETIES

@Riteishd Last night was absolutely memorable —a perfect evening hosted by Mrs Neeta and Mr Mukesh Ambani to celebrate the 100 x 100 of Sachin Tendulkar.

@bipsluvurself It is better to trust and be disappointed once in a while than it is to distrust and be miserable all the time.

@realprietyzinta Just got back frm Nita & Mukesh’s party 4 Sachin :)100th 100 in Test Cricket. Bravo Sachin! U make us all proud. Thank u from all of India !

A

ctor Tusshar Kapoor is all set to join the sixpack gang in Bollywood. The actor is working hard for Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum, in which he will go shirtless and reveal a sculpted body in a beach sequence. “My trainer is pushing me a lot. He is working hard on me for Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum. There is a beach scene and if I have to go shirtless, I will have to be fit,” Tusshar said. “It’s fun to shock people and do something that you have not done before. I also have a seduction scene in the film,” he added. A sequel to 2005 film Kya Kool Hain Hum, Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum will be a sex comedy. And Tusshar feels the Indian audience is ready for such content. Tusshar seems confident with the content and says one doesn’t need U/A certification for a film to work,” said Tusshar. IANS

@SrBachchan T 695 - Testing the music with ‘Madhushala’ and still working on perfecting it... tomorrow again at the studios ... !!

@AnupamPkher Happy to meet my friend & wonderful actor Nitin Gnatra in London. Fans screamed. It was for him. #EastEnders effect.:)

@NeilNMukesh I’ve always believed in VALUES and not VALUABLES. That’s my upbringing. That defines the MUKESH house hold.

I’m still single: Nargis Fakhri

P

akistaniAmerican actress Nargis Fakhri rubbishes rumours of a romantic link-up with Shahid Kapoor and says she is still single. “That was pretty interesting because I woke up in the morning and didn’t even know that I had moved into somebody’s house...

Everything is a rumour. I am still single, unfortunately because I would love to meet someone lovely,” the 32-year-old said. Nargis attended Shahid’s birthday celebrations in Goa, supposedly sparking off the rumours. “Yeah, there were a lot many people that I

know who went as well. So, I don’t know why I was not dating all of those people,” said the actress who made her debut in Indian films with Rockstar opposite Ranbir Kapoor. Her performance in her debut film met with mixed reactions and the actress currently has no project in hand. IANS

Back from Delhi... Heading straight to the sets of JJWS to shoot the Opening Episode... Guess Who I met in the Flight?!

Biel and Timberlake hunt for wedding venue

BIEBER

A

FINALLY HITS MANHOOD

ctress Jessica Biel and singer Justin Timberlake are still hunting for a perfect wedding location for there August wedding. The Hollywood couple are yet to find a venue that can accommodate all their guests. “It needs to be in California and offer plenty of room! It will be a big wedding. They have lots of people they want to invite,” quoted a source.

T

o the ecstatic, pants-wetting delight of millions of his pubescent fans, tonight Justin Bieber released Boyfriend, the first single from his upcoming third album Believe. And boy, does he know how to make them squeal. The greatest part of it is, even though “Boyfriend” is essentially the same song Bieber has been singing since he first started his career, none of his fans are going to care one iota. Sure, there are a couple of isolated moments of specificity - at one point he hilariously intones, “I could be your Buzz Lightyear, fly across the globe” but the basic message remains the same: Ka-CHING!

Kevin Smith bored of action films

A

ctor-director Kevin Smith who has previously made Red State and Cop Out claims he is now bored of creating the dramatic films and would rather spend his life chatting. “I’d rather waste time sitting around talking to people than waste time on a movie set,” a website quoted the star. “Well, it’s not a waste because you’re eventually getting a product, but you shoot two weeks for a 30second action sequence. Life’s too short. Shooting action is just painstakingly boring,” he added. Kevin plans to retire from making movies after his next project because he feels he has nothing left to add to the world of cinema. The 41 year old claims he never regrets any of the work he has done or hasn’t done.

KAKURO

How to play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

The world number one Djokovic, who won Miami titles in 2007 and 2011, saved seven of eight break point opportunities as he beat Troicki for the 11th consecutive time. “Generally I feel that I have been playing well,” Djokovic said. “I did have some ups and downs, especially in today's match, but I'm confident that I can raise the level of my performance in every match.” Djokovic finished with two aces, one double fault and won 73 percent of his first-serve points in the 85 minute match. Djokovic next plays 17th seed Richard Gasquet of France. Azarenka survived a scare from 16th seeded Dominika Cibulkova, gutting out a 1-6, 7-6 (9/7), 7-5 victory in the fourth round Monday. Cibulkova made Azarenka, of Belarus, work to protect her season long match win streak which now stands at 26. “It felt like she closed her eyes and just went for everything, and me, I couldn't really open my eyes,” Azarenka said. “It was like I was blinded. “But my coach came to the court, kicked me a little bit that I have to at least try to change something. It was like a snowball.

fighting in my heart today.” World No. 1 Azarenka struggled in the first set then needed a tiebreaker in the second to get

back into the marathon two hour, 47 minute match. She finished with two aces and seven double faults, compared to Cibulkova's 10 double faults. Azarenka advances to face France's Marion Bartoli, who easily defeated Maria Kirilenko 6-1, 6-2 earlier in the day. Roddick beat Federer for just the third time in 24 career meetings. “It was kind of a game of chess,” Roddick said. “I stayed back on the returns, which is something I have not done with him often early on. He might have been a little bit surprised by it.” Roddick hammered 12 aces and won 74 percent of his firstserve points to outlast Federer in the two hour, one minute third round match. After losing the first set tiebreak, Federer broke Roddick three times to even the match at one-set all. Roddick saved four break points to hold serve in his first service game of the final set. “I had my chances,” Federer said. “I could have been up a break early in the third, but he did well to fight off those break points. He served really well.” Federer's 16-match win streak, included titles in Rotterdam, Dubai and Indian Wells. World No. 2 Maria Sharapova defeated fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) to set up a quarter-final clash with China's Li Na. Sharapova, the 2011 Miami runner-up, is chasing her first title at the event after finishing second three times. She lost in the final last year to Azarenka. “I felt like I was up a set and a break, and played a bit sloppy,” Sharapova said. “Combination of

her stepping up, and being much more aggressive. She had opportunities, served for the second set. “I just hung in there and stayed consistent. I played a much smarter tiebreaker, and I think that helped me.” Sharapova saved break point 11 of 15 times and converted on five of eight of her break point opportunities to advance into a matchup against Li, who rallied to beat Sabine Lisicki 3-6, 6-4, 62. American 10th seed Serena Williams defeated Australian sixth seed Samantha Stosur 7-5, 6-3 in a rematch of the 2011 US Open final.

It’s a Herculean task, but Kenton’s Cool LONDON:

A British mountaineer announced Monday that he will try to take an Olympic medal to the top of Mount Everest to fulfil a 1924 promise made following an early, fatal attempt to scale the peak. Kenton Cool, who completed his ninth ascent of the world's highest mountain last year, is commemorating a 1922 expedition in which British adventurers got close to the summit, which had never been reached at the time. The group, led by soldier Charles Bruce and accompanied by porters from the Himalayas, climbed within 500 metres of the top but failed thrice to complete the final stretch. Disaster hit the expedition on

the way down when an avalanche killed seven Indian members of the party. Two years later at the 1924 Winter Olympics, the group was presented with medals to mark their achievement and their deputy leader, Edward Strutt, vowed to return to Everest and leave one of the medals at the summit. Cool wants to honour Strutt's pledge, which remains unfulfilled nearly 90 years later. “The 1922 expedition was groundbreaking on so many levels -- they got incredibly high... It smashed all records up to that date,” Cool told BBC radio. “When they were awarded the gold medals — they were awarded en masse to Strutt — he

turned round and said that at the next opportunity, one of these medals would make their way to the very summit of Mount Everest,” Cool said. Edmund Hillary, from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal became the first climbers to reach the summit in 1953. Cool has borrowed the medal awarded to Arthur Wakefield, a medic on the 1922 expedition, from his family and will try to take it to the summit this year, setting off in May, two months before the Olympic Games begin in London. “With the 2012 Olympics in London, I knew when I had to do it,” Cool told the BBC. Obama steps down as Sasha’s coach WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has acknowledged he is giving up his role as an informal volunteer coaching assistant for his 10-year-old daughter’s basketball team. “As all of them get better, they’ll have more organized programs, they’re going to get coaches who know a lot more than I do, so I think that pretty soon I’ll be retiring to the stands,” Obama told ESPN about his duties for daughter Sasha’s team. Obama, who has left the White House many weekends for coaching, said it was nonetheless a positive experience. “I’m a huge believer that sports ends up being good for kids, and especially good for girls,” he said in the interview posted Monday by ESPN. “It gives them confidence, it gives them a sense of what it

He said he and Love saw that “girls wouldn’t know where to go, so I would go and whisper to the coach, who’s a wonderful young woman, but she’s never played basketball... we started offering our services.” On Sundays, he said, “We have them over to a little gym over here... it ended up being as much fun as I had over the course of the last couple of years.” AFP

SA sniff victory WELLINGTON: South Africa were on the verge of victory over New Zealand at tea on the final day of the third Test at the Basin Reserve on Tuesday after speedster Morne Morkel skittled through the top-order batsmen. New Zealand, set the near impossible target of 389, were 1035 with Morkel taking all the wickets for the remarkable figures of five for 11 off 11 overs. With New Zealand captain Ross Taylor suffering a broken forearm and taking no further part in the Test, the hosts have only four tailend batsmen left. Morkel was on a hat-trick after cleaning up Dean Brownlie and Daniel Vettori with successive yorkers with the last two balls of his 10th over but Kane Williamson placed the first ball of his next over through mid-on for three. The 21-year-old Williamson has been the sole rock of the New Zealand innings, surviving a painful strike in the groin and at least four edges behind the stumps to be 58 not out at tea with Kruger van Wyk on seven. Morkel started his destructive campaign in New Zealand’s second over when Daniel Flynn gloved a rising delivery through to

Luiz plays down Drogba jibe

AC Milan ready for Barca MILAN: AC Milan have hinted they could shun their Italian roots when Barcelona visit the San Siro in the Champions League quarter-final, first leg on Wednesday. Speaking following Saturday’s 2-1 win over Roma, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said there were two ways to tackle Barca. “Either you sit back and try to hit them on the counterattack, which is difficult, or you do what we did in our home group game and have a go, but we made some mistakes,” he said. Allegri hinted that he favoured a more positive approach in throwing some caution to the wind rather than adopting a more typical catenaccio (door-bolt) system. In either case Allegri is more likely to turn to his forwards than his defence to try to solve

Either you sit back and try to hit them on the counter-attack, which is difficult, or you have a go. Massimiliano Allegri AC Milan coach the Barca conundrum. The two sides met in the group stages earlier this season and although the scores were close, Barca totally dominated in the 2-2 draw in Spain while they also deserved their 3-2 victory in Italy. What those games showed, though, was that Barca do con-

Stephan El Shaarawy was called upon. In defence it is a different story as influential centre-back Thiago Silva has been ruled out of both legs with a hamstring pull. It means Daniele Bonera, rather than veteran Alessandro Nesta, who is just back from injury, is likely to play alongside Frenchman Philippe Mexes in the heart of defence. Silva’s loss cannot be understated despite the reliability of Bonera, who stepped into the breach two years ago at Old Trafford as Milan were crushed 4-0 by Manchester United. Club captain Massimo Ambrosini knows how much Silva will be missed. “I’m sorry for Thiago Silva, it’s an important loss but we’ll keep going,” he said. AFP

LISBON: Chelsea defender David Luiz insisted Didier Drogba had not been mocking Benfica when he was filmed trembling theatrically after the Blues were drawn against the Portuguese giants. In video shown on Chelsea’s website shortly after the Champions League quarter-final pairings were announced, Ivory Coast striker Drogba could be seen shaking uncontrollably after the club were drawn with Benfica. The footage has been viewed as a jibe against Benfica in some quarters, but Luiz revealed on Monday that Drogba’s bizarre act was referencing the fact that Chelsea were on course to play Barcelona in the semi-finals. “If people watch the video closely, it’s not directed at Benfica, it was at Barcelona, because Barcelona are a big team," Luiz told reporters. “It was not directed at Benfica because Didier knows that they are a big team and that Benfica are going to be difficult opponents." Benfica coach Jorge Jesus meanwhile laughed off Drogba’s antics.

he most encouraging development yet for Fabrice Muamba arrived as Bolton Wanderers prepared to replay their FA Cup tie with Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder got out of bed for the first time as he continued his recovery from a cardiac arrest, reported the Guardian. A small delegation from Bolton, including the manager, Owen Coyle, and chairman, Phil Gartside, will visit Muamba at the London chest hospital before the rearranged quarter-final at White Hart Lane. It is now 10 days since the Bolton midfielder collapsed, prompting the abandonment of the tie. A statement released jointly by the hospital and Bolton said: “Fabrice Muamba remains in intensive care at the London chest hospital where his condition is serious but stable.”

Man Utd escape ‘paying penalty’ MANCHESTER: Wayne Rooney kept Manchester United on course for a record 20th title after hitting the winner in a 1-0 win over Fulham at Old Trafford on Monday. Rooney’s 21st top-flight goal of the season, which arrived towards the end of the first half, proved enough to see off spirited mid-table opposition. The result sent Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, who have won their last six league games, three points clear of neighbours Manchester City at the top of the table with eight games remaining. It was far from vintage United, but with their next four games against teams in the bottom six, it is difficult to see where United are going to slip up. “For an hour we played very well and we made some decent opportunities but you have to give credit to Fulham,” Ferguson told Sky Sports. “They had more left than we did in the last 15 minutes. I think they had a claim (for a penalty), there’s no doubt. We had a claim in the first half. “Maybe the referee was thinking about that, but certainly Michael Carrick caught Danny Murphy’s heel.” Having destroyed struggling Wolves 5-0 in their last outing, United were hoping Fulham would prove equally obliging opponents with the league delicately poised. Fulham spent the opening exchanges penned inside their own half. But this was a night for patience as United struggled to impose themselves until Rooney struck three minutes before the interval. Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs headed an early chance straight at keeper Mark Schwarzer while

AFP/ANDREW YATES Patrice Evra proved an unlikely goal threat in the 32nd minute with an overhead kick which flashed narrowly wide. But the ruthless finishing which was so evident eight days earlier at Molineux was missing as Fulham created just as many chances as United before the interval.

IT WAS FAR FROM VINTAGE UNITED, BUT WITH THEIR NEXT FOUR GAMES AGAINST WEAK TEAMS, IT’S HARD TO SEE WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO SLIP UP.

Inter sacks Ranieri ROME: Inter Milan sacked coach Claudio Ranieri on Monday after a string of poor results which has left the Serie A giants struggling to qualify for next season’s Champions League. The former Chelsea and Valencia handler - who has guided the side that won the treble including the Champions League in 2010 to just one win in their last 10 league games - has been replaced by youth team coach Andrea Stramaccioni. The final straw for Inter president Massimo Moratti and the board came with the 2-0 defeat at Juventus on Sunday leaving them eighth in Serie A, 10 points off the Champions League positions, and having

failed to score in seven of their last 10 league matches. The end for Ranieri came only hours after Moratti had said he thought the coach would last until the end of the season. It’s a huge risk from the president as Stramaccioni, 36, has no first team experience whereas Ranieri has also coached the likes of Juventus, Roma and Atletico Madrid during a long career. Italian press seemed to have a sniff of what was coming and asked Stramaccioni earlier in the day what he would feel about taking over the reins. “If Moratti calls, I always respond, in general,” he had said. AFP

Not for the first time this season, Clint Dempsey was his team’s main goal threat. The United States international twice tested David De Gea in the space of a few minutes, his second effort a lovely attempted curler from the edge of the area which had United’s Spanish keeper diving at full stretch to claw

away. Yet just when Fulham thought they had survived the opening half without damage, Rooney pounced from close range after Jonny Evans had teed-up the striker from Ashley Young’s 42nd minute cross following a mistake by John ArneRiise. The sighs of relief could be heard all around the ground. United, who meet City in what could be a winner-take-all game on April 30, dominated possession after the interval but were unable to add to their tally. Schwarzer was forced into action when Giggs played the ball over the top for Antonio Valencia, who seemed likely to score, but his shot was straight at the Australian international. With 15 minutes remaining, United spurned a glorious chance to double their advantage. Schwarzer, who had an excellent game, twice denied Young before Giggs had a goal-bound effort blocked by Brede Hangeland. United survived a scare in the 89th minute when Fulham substitute Danny Murphy went crashing inside the penalty area following a Michael Carrick challenge. But referee Michael Oliver waved away Fulham’s appeals for a penalty as United hung on for their ninth win in 10 league games. Fulham manager Martin Jol thought that it had been the wrong decision. “I feel it was a difficult decision, it always is for a penalty,” said the Dutchman. “I think you should send Michael Carrick off and I think everyone in the stadium was expecting it. I’ve seen it many times before, you have to be brave to give a penalty like that here.”
