Woman burgles own home Woman’s paramour kept asking her for more and more gold until the only way to keep her husband in the dark about her affair was to fake a break-in at her own house.

t was an inside job, but the husband never dreamed it could be his wife who had masterminded the whole thing. Chilkalguda police have in their custody J Swaroopa and her paramour, Balram Agarwal, for engineering a ‘burglary’ at her home and making away with 20 tolas of gold. A burglary was reported at RTC supervisor J Shivlal’s home in Alla Gadda Bawi in Chilkalguda on November 10. The unwary police went around questioning outside suspects, maid and neighbours, while the real burglars were inside the
house, said crime inspector Khaja Moinuddin. Swaroopa, 36, and Shivlal, 39, have two children. She allegedly developed an extra-marital relationship with Balram, 26, who runs a cloth shop in Chilkalguda. Once they expressed mutual interest, she used to visit the cloth shop frequently, it is said. Balram soon began to come to her home and spend time with her while her husband was away working. While interrogating the suspects, the police learnt that Shivlal’s inability to devote time to her and to the home was the main reason for his wife having an affair. “Shivlal was a workaholic and he reportedly spent a lot of time on duty,” said
Swaroopa. He explained that he had financial difficulties and sought her help. She began giving him cash and gold. Gradually, he asked for more

was on night duty, the duo took away the gold and made it look like an outside job. When her husband came home early in the morning, Swaroopa told him that the house had been burgled. “Since we had some doubts about her statement, we collected her mobile phone call history and found that most of the calls had been made to Balram Agarwal. Also, the children had not heard any unusual noise on the fateful night, nor did the wife appear unduly worried at the loss of such a huge fortune. All this evidence together helped the police crack the case,” Moinuddin said. The police have recovered the gold and `4,000 in cash from the duo.

e have all seen fire extinguishers attached to many commercial establishments. But ask the people who work there if they know anything about handling the equipment and you will draw a blank stare. Nobody knows if the extinguishers are working, nobody has seen anyone inspecting them. Worse still, few buildings have a fire escape. No wonder fire mishaps like the one at Manikonda repeats ad nauseum. Sadly, it is only after gory fire accidents such as these occur is one reminded of fire safety measures and NOCs. As a rule, extinguishers need to be serviced at least once a year. If an extinguisher has been used or has lost pressure (the dial is not green), it needs immediate servicing. Every six years, an extinguisher must be taken apart, examined and recharged. Every 12 years, extinguishers must be hydro tested to make sure the bottle is still serviceable and holds pressure. However, when you ask around who is in-charge of fire safety, you get no clear answers. When Postnoon contacted AP Fire Services, GHMC and fire officials it was emerged that nobody owns up responsibility. A fire station manager says, “People talk about fire safety only when there is a mishap. They go back to living in unlicensed buildings. Technically, we are supposed to have a fire service station for every ward or

locality with a 1 lakh population. That way Hyderabad is supposed to have 80 fire service stations,” he says. Hyderabad currently has 22 fire stations spread across the City. However, that does not comfort citizens who are now shocked by the recent fire mishap. Assistant fire director of GHMC, Lakshmi Prasad says, “The Manikonda disaster was not under GHMC limits. It was under HMDA limits and a panchayat raj division. According to the Fire Services Act of 1999, buildings above five floors (18mtrs) residential and commercial buildings are supposed to obtain an NOC. Buildings below 18 mtrs do not need to take preemptive NOC.” Does that mean buildings

below 18 meters are not prone to fire accidents? “No. Indeed they are. But comparatively, those under the 18 meter limit are less prone to hazards,” says Lakshmi Prasad. The fact that emergency fire services could not reach the building in time shows that regulations are always flouted for the sake of saving money. According to retired assistant fire director Pratap Reddy, “It is like a vicious ring in which ultimately it is the occupier who is the loser. Let us take a multi-
storeyed residential building as an example. The builder tries to save the `40 to 50 lakh on additional fire safety and pay off the officials. Norms are not followed but then an NOC is still issued. The department does not care as long as pockets are filled. When incidents such as these occur, the occupier ends up saying ‘I did not know all this’, the builder is to be held responsible.” “Who follows norms anymore? The fire services or the local municipal bodies do not conduct fire safety campaigns or regular checks among commercial buildings anymore. What is the use of having fire extinguishers when people do not know how to operate them?” he questions.

uoyed by the padayatra’s perceived success, the Telugu Desam Party is taking the battle to the next phase. The party will show, issue by issue, a comparative picture of TDP rule and Congress rule. “Let people decide,” says the think-tank of TDP. Party satraps insist that Chandrababu Naidu’s padayatra, earlier ridiculed by Congress, turned out to be a big success. “Look, every other party is imitating us,” they say. It is true that Naidu’s marathon padayatra, covering the whole State on foot, proved a trailblazer. Now, the YSRC has put Sharmila on the job; CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, after Indirabata, has asked district leaders to undertake mass contact programmes in the areas under their charge. The TRS will soon be making similar mass arousal programmes in view of the elections fast approaching. Leaders say they will initiate debate among people on the core issues affecting them by revealing status documents of 1994 to 2004 period and comparing them with that of the Congress regime from 2004 onwards. Twice a week, they plan to initiate discussions on eight to 10 key issues, including power, irrigation, welfare and other sectors on every alternate day from Monday or Tuesday. Base reports would be prepared by taking the help of experts and they would also interpret the reports while placing them before the public for a meaningful debate, TDP leaders Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy and Kalava Srinivasulu said on Sunday. Party leaders have come to believe that as the Assembly was not used for raising people’s woes, the best way out was to have direct interaction with people. “We lead, others follow,” said Ravula. Naidu believes that the ‘bubble’ of YSRC would be burst soon and he would be the one to prick the balloon.

Highly-placed Congress sources confided in Postnoon today that the Congress high command had held four surveys in the State to find out how desperate people of the region are for a separate Telangana state. The surveys reportedly found that people have other priorities and the Congress could win major portions of Telangana region despite the T-factor. A senior Congress leader who was associated with this survey said, “Yes, our party will not give any assurance on separate Telangana state till the 2014 elections are over. We conducted four surveys across the T-region recently to find out the intensity of the Telangana sentiment. It was revealed that majority of people, especially those belonging to Greater Hyderabad region, which consists of 24 Assembly and four MP seats, are opposed to division of the State for various reasons. These people are in favour of a united Andhra Pradesh,” he said. The leader, who is a staunch supporter
of separate Telangana state, further revealed that the party was not worried about losing a few seats in strong T-bastions like Karimnagar, Warangal and Nizamabad districts. He added that the party is preparing itself to employ various political strategies to win as many Assembly seats as possible in these districts. Another party leader and MLC also confirmed that the survey had been conducted and said that the party was prepared to face any consequences for not creating the separate T-state.

T-leaders have sniffed out the survey, sources said. It has shocked them to learn that people are not unduly worried at the delay in creating a new state. People have other worries, like lack of development, lack of agriculture facilities, rising prices and corruption on their mind. MPs are more concerned about the survey results, which are still under wraps. They have begun consultations on how to survive if the T-feeling is feeble. They rode to Parliament on the crest of strong Telangana sentiment.

e paid between `20,000 and `60,000 bribe per slab to the officials who came for inspection. They assured us that nothing would happen to us,” lamented a resident of Anjaiah Nagar, whose house was among those pulled down by the civic demolition squad the other day. The loss is unendurable for many whose houses were on the condemned list on the first day of demolition. This was the biggest operation of this year by GHMC authorities under the direction of Lokayukta. But the selective enforcement in the down town areas like Anjaiah Nagar and Siddiquenagar has made the GHMC a villain in the eyes of those affected. Several questioned the kind of resistance being put up by the residents, but very few have acknowledged the complexity of the problem. According to the order dated 5-9-2012, Lokayukta had ordered the GHMC to take action against 14 unauthorised constructions but the officials identified 36 buildings, 23 of which were demolished on Monday. This is another fact that could not be digested by the locals who demanded immediate suspension of the officials responsible for the discrepancies and demolition. Although the demolition on the second day was halted, owing to the sit-in protest by local MLA and corporator, there is no clarity from officials whether the demolition will resume or not. According to the officials there is an impression that no one will touch a house once it is completed. “This perception should change,” remarked an official. Commissioner MT Krishna Babu blames locals for paying bribes. “There are strict norms for construction of buildings. People should learn that bribing cannot help them,” he points out.

he Nephrology team at Care Hospitals, Hyderabad successfully performed the first kidney swap transplant in Andhra Pradesh on MM Baig and Devidas, who were both suffering from end stage renal disease. MM Baig, 50, with blood group B+ had a prospective donor in his wife Ayesha Baig. However, her blood group is A+. Another patient Devidas, 44, was undergoing dialysis. Although his blood group was A+, his wife’s was B+, making them a mismatch when it came to donation. Despite both the wives willing to donate their kidneys, they were a mismatch for their husbands. physically challenged man died after he allegedly set himself ablaze over a family dispute at a busy square in Karimnagar town, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place Tuesday, police said, adding that the victim has been identified as Rala Narayana aka Maraiah, 32, from Navipet in Nizamabad district. According to police, Narayana had come to Karimnagar to submit an application at the district collectorate

icture this: Worms in meals, no beds to sleep on, no hot water, broken window panes and not a single fire extinguisher. These are the conditions in which the students of the Government Residential School for the Deaf, Malakpet, are forced to live in every day, claims an organisation that has now filed a petition with the State Human Rights Commission. The requests for betterment of this special needs school have fallen on deaf ears. The State government gives a mere `17.20 per day to each student, and this amount must take care of all of the child’s needs like clothing, food and bedding. Every student of Class I to VII is allotted `473 a month; this increases to `535 a month for students in Class VIII to X. This amount is fixed regardless of price hikes, dealing the children a raw deal. The fact that winter is setting in has only made things worse. With no beds, the children sleep on the floor. Broken window panes make it that much harder to bear the cold, considering all they are given is a bedsheet or blanket to shield themselves. The hostel is home to 134 students and none of them get hot water. With no fire extinguishers, there are no safety measures in place for the 144 children who attend the school. There isn’t even a playground here. On November 22, the Andhra Pradesh Balala Hakkula Sangham (APBHS) filed a petition with the Human Rights Commission, claiming that corporal punishment was still prevalent at the school. What is more shocking is that the Sangham claimed that the children were being served stale food, many times with insects and worms in rice and curries. The petitioner, Achyuta Rao, president, APBHS, said the students were forced to take cold water baths in winter. When Postnoon went to get a first-hand view of the condition of the school, a cane kept in a classroom proved the Sangham’s claims of corporal punishment. The staff’s meek excuse was that the cane was used to point out things written on the blackboard. A teacher, K Premila Devi, was aghast at the allegation of worms in the food. “We sit and eat with the students. How it is possible that we don’t know that there are insects in the food?” The school says that on several occasion, it has requested the government to increase the daily funding for each student to `50. “We get only `17.20 per student a day. It is very difficult to maintain this budget. With the current prices, it is impossible for us to provide egg, milk and fruits to each child,” said one staff member. The school says it requires a minimum monthly amount of `1,000 per child. Shockingly, Postnoon also found that the teachers here do not have the training required to teach deaf and dumb children. “All the teachers here have done their B.Ed from the National Institute of Hearing. But we are not up-to-date with the latest developments in the field,” said one teacher. This undoubtedly affects the quality of education at the school — a heavy price paid by the students. When quizzed about the pathetic condition of the school, principal Lacha Goud blamed the government. “For the last four years, the per-day scheme has not changed. We have requested the authorities several times to revise the budget, but we are forced to make do with the paltry sum that has been allocated,” he said. The State Human Rights Commission has taken note of the case and has instructed the collector, Hyderabad, to submit a report on the school by January 21, 2013. Only time will tell if this will finally bring about the much-needed change in the lives of the special needs children, or if this will be another case lost in bureaucracy.

There are about six university-level programmes, leading to the B.Ed degree after graduation. The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is currently making efforts to streamline teacher training programmes in terms of syllabus, infrastructure and staff pattern, to assure the quality of training. The syllabus for university-level programme (B.Ed. - Special Education) has been already standardised by RCI, while the M.Ed syllabus is in the process of standardisation.

entrepreneurs. “Potential entrepreneurs or students interested can also attend a four week subsidised educational program on Solar Power Technologies, that is run by us with the support of ministry of small and medium enterprises. “There are many misconceptions about solar appliances and their effectiveness, which need to be changed with proper informative campaigns by the state government along with the support of NGOs. “States like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are giving various benefits for using solar appliances. For instance, it is mandatory to install a solar water heater for certain buildings in Karnataka and there is a monthly rebate on electricity bills. Such initiatives need to be encouraged in our state to support this growing industry. “The promotion and usage of solar-based appliances, will not only bring cost savings for the customer but also helps to nullify the power scarcity and promotes safer environment,” he said.

Woman IAF officer hangs self Court of Inquiry ordered to probe cause of death. JODHPUR: A woman officer in the Indian Air Force allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her official quarters here this morning. Squadron leader Anandita Das, 29, hailing from Kolkata, was posted at the Jodhpur Air Force Station and living in the officers’ quarters with her husband, who is also an IAF officer. “She was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the wee hours today. The body has been shifted to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital for postmortem,” police said. She was a ground duty officer. Defence spokesperson SD Goswami said that a court of inquiry has been ordered in the case. “Police investigation is on and we will extend full cooperation to the police investigation,” he added. PTI

Calcutta High Court. Impeachment process started against him (and then) stopped. We have a charge sheet filed against Justice Nirmal Yadav of Punjab High Court. We have 34 judges of the Allahabad High Court who are being investigated by the CBI. So, there is corruption there and therefore, he must be having some material against some judges,” he said. On self-regulation, he said, “We have tried it and it has not succeeded. We have tried it all these years...About the judiciary, everybody said that.. we will selfregulate, we will control, the superior court will look after the subordinate courts...nothing has happened,” he said. MALDA (WB): Four persons were killed and 40 others injured, 12 of them critically, when their van overturned at Mongalbari on NH 34 in Malda district today. MALDA: Four more children died at the Malda College and Hospital, taking the total number of crib deaths since Saturday last to 27. While three children died this morning, another died last night, hospital sources said today. The cause of the death was malnourishment, underweight, and premature birth, they said, adding they were admitted to the hospital in very critical condition.

he political life of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe's most influential leader and the oftproclaimed world's most powerful woman, is a tale of paradoxes, driven by her own enigmatic nature. While angry protesters marching the streets of Athens, Lisbon and Madrid brandish posters of Merkel dressed in Nazi garb, the 58-year-old enjoys a level of domestic popularity unseen by any post-war leader before her. Merkel had to endure the fond but patronising nickname "the girl" bestowed by then chancellor Helmut Kohl, who made her minister for women's issues and later environmental affairs. But in 2000, the frumpy newcomer rose to the head of the CDU when she alone had the courage to tell Kohl to quit as party chairman over a slush fund scandal. Critics say her science background leads her to scrutinise the minutiae and at times dither, which in the crisis has left ailing European partners to twist in the wind. Rivals also find her chameleon-like qualities exasperating. Merkel was a staunch defender of nuclear power until Japan's Fukushima disaster last year, prompting a dizzying about-face that has seen her pledge to phase out all of Germany's nuclear reactors within the next decade. Her policy on aiding debtwracked countries has also seen her erase several previously fixed lines in the sand. Aides say that while she finds some of the most virulent criticism of her unfair, she dismisses it as the price of power.

Eleven days have passed since the demise of the man who was a power to reckon with in Maharashtra politics, and every passing day is seeing more praises being sung for him — an outstanding posthumous achievement for a man who demonstrated to the country, with ruthless efficiency, how to perfect the politics of hate. From mid-1960s, when a nascent Shiv Sena began its vitriolic campaign against nonMaharashtrians, the outfit grew in strength. With the brutal crushing of Leftist trade unions, allegedly with money and muscle backing of industrialists, the Sena assumed the monopoly of violent enforcement — and Bal Thackeray was the guiding light and ideologue. The violent ‘lungi bhagao’ campaign of Shiv Sena targeting South Indians and their establishments unleashed a reign of terror, with the law and order establishment looking the other way.
Political leaders have been trying to outdo each other in showering praises on a man who has made no bones about his admiration for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler ‘for his talent as an artist, orator and a man who was the master of the mob’. He found a lot of aspects common between himself and the German dictator – who, with his lebensraum (living space) call, might have inspired Tahckeray’s Marathi manoos war cry. For a man, whose organisation literally rewrote workers’ rights and fought tooth and nail to destroy the cosmopolitan nature of Bombay (oops... Mumbai), the eulogies reflect the insensitivity of the political class in the name of political correctness and social niceties. There isn’t a major incident of communal trouble in Mumbai that doesn’t have Shiv Sena and Bal Thackeray written all over it. Thackeray’s skill in discovering a communal angle to every incident of consequence was unparalleled. The party mouthpiece Saamana, with regular inputs from Thackeray made sure that there was never any dearth of venom for public consumption. The Sri Krishna Commission too pointed fingers and Thackeray and his outfit for inciting the pogrom against Muslims in the aftermath of the
1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. For unemployed and frustrated Marathi youths who were looking for a punching bag, Bal Thackeray and Shiv Sena provided a platform for unfettered thuggery in the name of a ‘glorious cause’ — not to mention the massive cash inflow through extortion from businesses that weren’t deferential enough. With no arm of the government being able to challenge the might of Shiv Sena in MumbaiThane belt, the outfit assumed the extra-constitutional power of censorship. From literature, art, sports and cinema, there is no area untouched by Sena diktats — forcibly enforced in most cases.
For a political career spanning more than four decades, Bal Thackeray has left behind nothing but a bitter aftertaste — let us not even talk about Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray. The toxic politics that divides people and fills their minds with hatred has done tremendous damage to the social and political fabric of Maharashtra in general and Mumbai in particular. With son and nephew jostling to bear the torch, Mumbai has more pain in store. Let us not allow death to be the pretext for granting sainthood to Bal Thackeray. The writer works for Postnoon.

man has been killed because he came out and spoke against something that he thought was unjust and barbaric. All he did was marry the woman he loved going against the wishes of their families and then came out and spoke against honour killing on TV. And now he has paid the price with his life. These are modern times and yet there are regions and people that still adhere to barbaric laws, which call for elimination of anything and anyone that would want to change and progress. We come to know the sad story because the couple was on Satyameva Jayathe. His widow, who is nine months pregnant claims that her family is behind the killing and that her husband would have been alive if he had police protection. And how did the police react to the incident? Instead of being ashamed that they failed in their duty to protect and own up and nab the culprits, they dispute what the poor woman has said, saying that the he was killed over a personal feud. Need we look further for reasons for the real social shambles our nation is, why we are uncertain about our hopes of becoming a progressive nation? The fact is that certain regions in our country are not very different from places like Uganda, which is going through a dark age of its own, where homosexuality is a crime, laws against gays and lesbians are deemed a Christmas gift. The irony is that the right to life is barely guaranteed even when the nation celebrates anniversary of its Constitution. Did we hear someone say something about progress?

Keeping a basic first aid kit for bleeds and cuts can be of great help. It is important to have bandages and an antiseptic cream or liquid to clean the wounds. If your child is allergic and on some medication keeping that at hand is important. Most importantly one should look at keeping children, especially young ones, away from objects that may harm them and make older children aware of what they should do in emergencies.

go for magical and effective treatments like botox.” And the young don’t believe in hiding it. “In some cases, they even upload their photos before and after surgery on social networking sites,” Srivastava said. The treatment varies with age. For instance, those in the 18-25 bracket opt for lip enhancement and chemical peels; those in the 26-35 group endorse treatments that promise a youthful look. The side-effects are few, it doesn’t take time and doesn’t cost too much. “Most of these treatments are lunch-time procedures done with injections; so

Active lifestyle helps slow dementia
WASHINGTON: An active lifestyle helps preserve the brain’s grey matter and lowers the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), says a new study. More than 35 million people worldwide are living with dementia, and the numbers are expected to double by 2030, according to the World Health Organisation. “The grey matter volume is a key marker of brain health. Larger grey matter volume means a healthier brain. Shrinking volume is seen in Alzheimer’s disease,” said Cyrus Raji, radiology resident at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). Raji and colleagues recently examined how an active lifestyle can influence brain structure. They studied 876 adults of an average age of 78 years, drawn from the multi-site Cardiovascular Health Study. The patients’ conditions ranged from normal cognition to Alzheimer’s dementia, according to an UCLA statement. “We had 20 years of clinical data on this group, including body mass index and lifestyle habits,” Raji said. “We drew our patients from four sites across the country, and we were able to assess energy output in the form of kilocalories per week.” The lifestyle factors examined included recreational sports, gardening and yard work, bicycling, dancing and riding exercise cycle. “The areas of the brain that benefited from an active lifestyle are the ones that consume the most energy and are very sensitive to damage,” Raji added. “What struck me most about the study results is that it is not one but a combination of lifestyle choices and activities that benefit the brain,” Raji said. Both passivity, hyperactivity can damage knees WASHINGTON: Both high and low levels of physical activities can speed up damage to the knee cartilage among the middleaged, says a new study. Researchers at the University of California — San Francisco (UCSF) previously had found a link between physical activity and cartilage degeneration. But that study focused on one time.
UCSF researchers looked at changes in knee cartilage among a group of middle-aged adults over a four-year period. They used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based T2 relaxation times to track the evolution of early degenerative cartilage changes in the knee, according to an UCSF statement. “T2 relaxation times generat-
ed from MR images allow for analysis of the biochemical and molecular composition of cartilage,” said Wilson Lin, research fellow and medical student at UCSF. Researchers analyzed 205 patients, aged 45 to 60 years. Participants used a questionnaire to record their physical activity. According to the results, partici-
pating frequently in high-impact activities appears linked with more degenerated cartilage and potentially a higher risk for development of osteoarthritis. “Those who had very low levels of activity had accelerated progression of T2 values. This suggests that there may be an optimal level of physical activity to preserve the cartilage.” IANS

There are several risky stunts in the film and during the film’s shooting Rana had suffered quite a few injuries while performing the stunts because he insisted that he do all the stunts himself. “As an actor I feel that stunt scenes done without a double are much more real and they exude far more realism in the body language and performance in the shot. It’s risky but I insisted that I don’t need a body double in the film.” Rana says. His decision to take the risk even resulted in third degree burns, but he insisted on completing the shoot after taking some medication. Action choreographer Vijayan and director Krish are praises for the actor’s professionalism and bravado in doing such risky stunts all by himself. The film has Rana, Nayanthara and Milind Gunaji in lead roles and it is set against the backdrop of the illegal mining in Bellary. Mani Sharma has composed the music.

Her role in Chameli cannot be compared with what she has portrayed in Talaash, says Kareena, who will be seen sharing the screen with Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji in the thriller. “ Chameli was totally different. It was very raw. The lingo and the language, body language and the outfit - everything was different. How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so
on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Back from the dead
Jim Beaver who plays Bobby Singer on Supernatural talks about the iconic episodes of the past and the return of his character in Season Eight. Q. Do you know how your character might be reintroduced to the show? I know that anything is possible. You know what? We are at the outer edges of what I can say without revealing any spoilers, so I’m going to keep my mouth shut and talk about what a thrill it is to be doing interviews for Supernatural. I keep sucking up to the powers that be on this show to keep me coming back for more. I’ve always been fairly successful at doing that in my career. When will we see Bobby Singer back on the show? I can’t say. Put it this way, I’ll be surprised if we’ve seen the last of Bobby. Q. How much of a challenge is it to keep storylines secret on a show like this? It’s a big challenge because you always have to watch what you’re saying. However, last season I actually had fun keeping the secret that Bobby was coming back as a ghost. I had a lot of fun with that because I went on Twitter and I lied to the universe. I told them all about this great movie I was making, but I wasn’t
actually making it. I posted photos I found on Google images of film crews in the snow and I was delighted to find that there were some people who were actually disappointed that I wasn’t making a movie about the abominable snowman. Q. Which Supernatural storyline was the toughest to keep under wraps? It was very tough to keep secret the fact that Bobby was going to get killed in the first place. I had to keep quiet for a couple of months on that news and I struggled. Q. How much do you know about Season Eight of the show? If I tell you about how much I know, it will tell you a little bit about what I know, so I can’t say anything. Put it this way, on a TV show the hierarchy is often established or symbolised by your number on the call sheet. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are number one and two on the call sheet. Because of how long I’ve been on the show, I’m number three.
Number three on the call sheet is often the last to find out anything. Let’s just say that this situation is not inconsistent with that. Q. What was the fan reaction to the iconic Season Seven episode where Bobby asked Sam and Dean to burn his flask? I haven’t heard too much of a reaction to that scene, apart from the fact that a lot of people were unhappy that it happened. There were also comments about the fact that the camera panned around to show Castiel watching with great interest. The fan base was really amazing in terms of how they dealt with Bobby’s demise. For the most part, they seemed unhappy that it happened. Q. In effect, you had to shoot two farewell scenes with Bobby. Which was the more emotional scene to shoot? The first one, during Death’s Door, was more emotional for me. When we shot
the burning of the flask, the thing that was foremost in our minds was not catching fire because that was a real bullet forge where we were shooting. They cut the dialogue that explained where we were burning the flask, but you can hear it on the gag reel. It was so hot in there. I didn’t have to stand as close to the heat as the others – but we were all about to catch fire, so it wasn’t emotional; we were just trying not to burn to death. Q. It’s been hinted that angels will feature heavily in Season Eight. Would you like to see Bobby return as an angel? I think that would be a great idea. Short of Castiel or somebody else bringing Bobby back to life; that would be a very interesting direction for the character. That’s definitely a possibility, and it’s a clever possibility – but again I can’t comment. There are no spoilers from me.

MARIA ANTONOVA MOSCOW: A Russian court on Tuesday freed a mixed martial arts champion from the Northern Caucasus after convicting him of involuntary manslaughter for killing a teenager, in a case that roused nationalist protests. Rasul Mirzayev, a 26-yearold fighter from the mainly Muslim region of Dagestan, hit 19-year-old Ivan Agafonov in August 2011 after an argument outside a Moscow night club. Although Agafonov seemed only slightly injured immediately after, he fell into a coma and died within a few days. Mirzayev was an undefeated Russian champion in the featherweight category of mixed martial arts -- an often bloody mixture of wrestling and boxing hugely popular in Russia -- at the time of his arrest. The long-running case was seen by Russia’s nationalists as skewed by the investigation in favour of the Dagestani man after his charge was changed from murder to the lighter involuntary manslaughter, with some experts arguing that Agafonov died because of hitting his head on the pavement.
