Woman burgles own home Woman’s paramour kept asking her for more and more gold until the only way to keep her husband in the dark about her affair was to fake a break-in at her own house.

Mohd SUBHAN mohd.s@postnoon.com

t was an inside job, but the husband never dreamed it could be his wife who had masterminded the whole thing. Chilkalguda police have in their custody J Swaroopa and her paramour, Balram Agarwal, for engineering a ‘burglary’ at her home and making away with 20 tolas of gold. A burglary was reported at RTC supervisor J Shivlal’s home in Alla Gadda Bawi in Chilkalguda on November 10. The unwary police went around questioning outside suspects, maid and neighbours, while the real burglars were inside the

house, said crime inspector Khaja Moinuddin. Swaroopa, 36, and Shivlal, 39, have two children. She allegedly developed an extra-marital relationship with Balram, 26, who runs a cloth shop in Chilkalguda. Once they expressed mutual interest, she used to visit the cloth shop frequently, it is said. Balram soon began to come to her home and spend time with her while her husband was away working. While interrogating the suspects, the police learnt that Shivlal’s inability to devote time to her and to the home was the main reason for his wife having an affair. “Shivlal was a workaholic and he reportedly spent a lot of time on duty,” said

Swaroopa. He explained that he had financial difficulties and sought her help. She began giving him cash and gold. Gradually, he asked for more

gold and a day came when the only way out of it was to create a fake burglary and take away substantial amounts of gold for her paramour. Accordingly, when Shivlal

was on night duty, the duo took away the gold and made it look like an outside job. When her husband came home early in the morning, Swaroopa told him that the house had been burgled. “Since we had some doubts about her statement, we collected her mobile phone call history and found that most of the calls had been made to Balram Agarwal. Also, the children had not heard any unusual noise on the fateful night, nor did the wife appear unduly worried at the loss of such a huge fortune. All this evidence together helped the police crack the case,” Moinuddin said. The police have recovered the gold and `4,000 in cash from the duo.

FIRE SAFETY

LAST YEAR... HERE No room for VVIPs in jail

L

ast year around this time the Chanchalguda prison was struggling to accommodate the several VVIPs who were being arrested for various crimes. Authorities and inmates alike were put to trouble when the prison was filled beyond capacity and most of the recent inmates were ‘big guns’ like Gali Janardhana Reddy and BV Srinivas Reddy.

Most city buildings are potential tinder boxes It is obvious that fire safety has taken a back seat in public buildings, thanks to corruption of civic authorities, but it’s something that needs urgent attention of the collective mind.

THINGS WE LEARNT TODAY

The column that teaches everyone something new about the way the City functions.

1

It’s hard to trust your own family. Even your wife. RTC employee Shivlal learnt that it’s hard to trust anybody these days when he realised that the burglary in his house was committed by his wife and her paramour.

2

Grease a few palms for building NOCs. Despite several fire accidents in the City in the past, builders continue to grease palms of officials to get away with lax fire safety procedures.

3

You can cry yourself hoarse, but T will have to wait. Although a few politicians are agitating for a separate state, the Congress is playing it cool. No Tstate till 2014, they say.

4

Sometimes bribes don’t really help. Despite passing money under the table, residents were in for a rude shock when the GHMC demolished a few illegal structures.

5

Who cares about children, especially the deaf ones? The students at Govt Residential School for Deaf are forced to live with sub-standard amenities.

CAMPAIGN

W

e have all seen fire extinguishers attached to many commercial establishments. But ask the people who work there if they know anything about handling the equipment and you will draw a blank stare. Nobody knows if the extinguishers are working, nobody has seen anyone inspecting them. Worse still, few buildings have a fire escape. No wonder fire mishaps like the one at Manikonda repeats ad nauseum. Sadly, it is only after gory fire accidents such as these occur is one reminded of fire safety measures and NOCs. As a rule, extinguishers need to be serviced at least once a year. If an extinguisher has been used or has lost pressure (the dial is not green), it needs immediate servicing. Every six years, an extinguisher must be taken apart, examined and recharged. Every 12 years, extinguishers must be hydro tested to make sure the bottle is still serviceable and holds pressure. However, when you ask around who is in-charge of fire safety, you get no clear answers. When Postnoon contacted AP Fire Services, GHMC and fire officials it was emerged that nobody owns up responsibility. A fire station manager says, “People talk about fire safety only when there is a mishap. They go back to living in unlicensed buildings. Technically, we are supposed to have a fire service station for every ward or

locality with a 1 lakh population. That way Hyderabad is supposed to have 80 fire service stations,” he says. Hyderabad currently has 22 fire stations spread across the City. However, that does not comfort citizens who are now shocked by the recent fire mishap. Assistant fire director of GHMC, Lakshmi Prasad says, “The Manikonda disaster was not under GHMC limits. It was under HMDA limits and a panchayat raj division. According to the Fire Services Act of 1999, buildings above five floors (18mtrs) residential and commercial buildings are supposed to obtain an NOC. Buildings below 18 mtrs do not need to take preemptive NOC.” Does that mean buildings

below 18 meters are not prone to fire accidents? “No. Indeed they are. But comparatively, those under the 18 meter limit are less prone to hazards,” says Lakshmi Prasad. The fact that emergency fire services could not reach the building in time shows that regulations are always flouted for the sake of saving money. According to retired assistant fire director Pratap Reddy, “It is like a vicious ring in which ultimately it is the occupier who is the loser. Let us take a multi-

storeyed residential building as an example. The builder tries to save the `40 to 50 lakh on additional fire safety and pay off the officials. Norms are not followed but then an NOC is still issued. The department does not care as long as pockets are filled. When incidents such as these occur, the occupier ends up saying ‘I did not know all this’, the builder is to be held responsible.” “Who follows norms anymore? The fire services or the local municipal bodies do not conduct fire safety campaigns or regular checks among commercial buildings anymore. What is the use of having fire extinguishers when people do not know how to operate them?” he questions.

TDP to let people decide The party has decided to give Assembly a skip and take action directly to people.

B

uoyed by the padayatra’s perceived success, the Telugu Desam Party is taking the battle to the next phase. The party will show, issue by issue, a comparative picture of TDP rule and Congress rule. “Let people decide,” says the think-tank of TDP. Party satraps insist that Chandrababu Naidu’s padayatra, earlier ridiculed by Congress, turned out to be a big success. “Look, every other party is imitating us,” they say. It is true that Naidu’s marathon padayatra, covering the whole State on foot, proved a trailblazer. Now, the YSRC has put Sharmila on the job; CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, after Indirabata, has asked district leaders to undertake mass contact programmes in the areas under their charge. The TRS will soon be making similar mass arousal programmes in view of the elections fast approaching. Leaders say they will initiate debate among people on the core issues affecting them by revealing status documents of 1994 to 2004 period and comparing them with that of the Congress regime from 2004 onwards. Twice a week, they plan to initiate discussions on eight to 10 key issues, including power, irrigation, welfare and other sectors on every alternate day from Monday or Tuesday. Base reports would be prepared by taking the help of experts and they would also interpret the reports while placing them before the public for a meaningful debate, TDP leaders Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy and Kalava Srinivasulu said on Sunday. Party leaders have come to believe that as the Assembly was not used for raising people’s woes, the best way out was to have direct interaction with people. “We lead, others follow,” said Ravula. Naidu believes that the ‘bubble’ of YSRC would be burst soon and he would be the one to prick the balloon.

as the Congress high command really put the contentious issue of a separate Telangana state on the back burner? Has it decided not to take a call on it until the 2014 elections are over? The answers are in the affirmative. Highly-placed Congress sources confided in Postnoon today that the Congress high command had held four surveys in the State to find out how desperate people of the region are for a separate Telangana state. The surveys reportedly found that people have other priorities and the Congress could win major portions of Telangana region despite the T-factor. A senior Congress leader who was associated with this survey said, “Yes, our party will not give any assurance on separate Telangana state till the 2014 elections are over. We conducted four surveys across the T-region recently to find out the intensity of the Telangana sentiment. It was revealed that majority of people, especially those belonging to Greater Hyderabad region, which consists of 24 Assembly and four MP seats, are opposed to division of the State for various reasons. These people are in favour of a united Andhra Pradesh,” he said. The leader, who is a staunch supporter

of separate Telangana state, further revealed that the party was not worried about losing a few seats in strong T-bastions like Karimnagar, Warangal and Nizamabad districts. He added that the party is preparing itself to employ various political strategies to win as many Assembly seats as possible in these districts. Another party leader and MLC also confirmed that the survey had been conducted and said that the party was prepared to face any consequences for not creating the separate T-state.

T-LEADERS SHOCKED

T-leaders have sniffed out the survey, sources said. It has shocked them to learn that people are not unduly worried at the delay in creating a new state. People have other worries, like lack of development, lack of agriculture facilities, rising prices and corruption on their mind. MPs are more concerned about the survey results, which are still under wraps. They have begun consultations on how to survive if the T-feeling is feeble. They rode to Parliament on the crest of strong Telangana sentiment.

“W

e paid between `20,000 and `60,000 bribe per slab to the officials who came for inspection. They assured us that nothing would happen to us,” lamented a resident of Anjaiah Nagar, whose house was among those pulled down by the civic demolition squad the other day. The loss is unendurable for many whose houses were on the condemned list on the first day of demolition. This was the biggest operation of this year by GHMC authorities under the direction of Lokayukta. But the selective enforcement in the down town areas like Anjaiah Nagar and Siddiquenagar has made the GHMC a villain in the eyes of those affected. Several questioned the kind of resistance being put up by the residents, but very few have acknowledged the complexity of the problem. According to the residents, the same people who had ensured that nothing would

between `5 lakh to `10 lakh for the construction. Despite several complaints from locals about the illegal construction activities in their neighbourhood no official paid heed and suddenly one day bulldozers reached the spot. Residents of Anjaiah Nagar and Siddiquenagar alleged that

the officials from bottom to top had received their cut, but they still came with the bulldozers. According to the order dated 5-9-2012, Lokayukta had ordered the GHMC to take action against 14 unauthorised constructions but the officials identified 36 buildings, 23 of which were demolished on Monday. This is another fact that could not be digested by the locals who demanded immediate suspension of the officials responsible for the discrepancies and demolition. Although the demolition on the second day was halted, owing to the sit-in protest by local MLA and corporator, there is no clarity from officials whether the demolition will resume or not. According to the officials there is an impression that no one will touch a house once it is completed. “This perception should change,” remarked an official. Commissioner MT Krishna Babu blames locals for paying bribes. “There are strict norms for construction of buildings. People should learn that bribing cannot help them,” he points out.

icture this: Worms in meals, no beds to sleep on, no hot water, broken window panes and not a single fire extinguisher. These are the conditions in which the students of the Government Residential School for the Deaf, Malakpet, are forced to live in every day, claims an organisation that has now filed a petition with the State Human Rights Commission. The requests for betterment of this special needs school have fallen on deaf ears. The State government gives a mere `17.20 per day to each student, and this amount must take care of all of the child’s needs like clothing, food and bedding. Every student of Class I to VII is allotted `473 a month; this increases to `535 a month for students in Class VIII to X. This amount is fixed regardless of price hikes, dealing the children a raw deal. The fact that winter is setting in has only made things worse. With no beds, the children sleep on the floor. Broken window panes make it that much harder to bear the cold, considering all they are given is a bedsheet or blanket to shield themselves. The hostel is home to 134 students and none of them get hot water. With no fire extinguishers, there are no safety measures in place for the 144 children who attend the school. There isn’t even a playground here. On November 22, the Andhra Pradesh Balala Hakkula Sangham (APBHS) filed a petition with the Human Rights Commission, claiming that corporal punishment was still prevalent at the school. What is more shocking is that the Sangham claimed that the children were being served stale food, many times with insects and worms in rice and curries. The petitioner, Achyuta Rao, president, APBHS, said the students were forced to take cold water baths in winter. When Postnoon went to get a first-hand view of the condition of the school, a cane kept in a classroom proved the Sangham’s claims of corporal punishment. The staff’s meek excuse was that the cane was used to point out things written on the blackboard. A teacher, K Premila Devi, was aghast at the allegation of worms in the food. “We sit and eat with the students. How it is possible that we don’t know that there are insects in the food?” The school says that on several occasion, it has requested the government to increase the daily funding for each student to `50. “We get only `17.20 per student a day. It is very difficult to maintain this budget. With the current prices, it is impossible for us to provide egg, milk and fruits to each child,” said one staff member. The school says it requires a minimum monthly amount of `1,000 per child. Shockingly, Postnoon also found that the teachers here do not have the training required to teach deaf and dumb children. “All the teachers here have done their B.Ed from the National Institute of Hearing. But we are not up-to-date with the latest developments in the field,” said one teacher. This undoubtedly affects the quality of education at the school — a heavy price paid by the students. When quizzed about the pathetic condition of the school, principal Lacha Goud blamed the government. “For the last four years, the per-day scheme has not changed. We have requested the authorities several times to revise the budget, but we are forced to make do with the paltry sum that has been allocated,” he said. The State Human Rights Commission has taken note of the case and has instructed the collector, Hyderabad, to submit a report on the school by January 21, 2013. Only time will tell if this will finally bring about the much-needed change in the lives of the special needs children, or if this will be another case lost in bureaucracy.

TRAINING THE TEACHERS

I

n India, a majority of the teacher training programmes are one-year diploma courses after high school education, run by nongovernmental organisations. There are about six university-level programmes, leading to the B.Ed degree after graduation. The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is currently making efforts to streamline teacher training programmes in terms of syllabus, infrastructure and staff pattern, to assure the quality of training. The syllabus for university-level programme (B.Ed. - Special Education) has been already standardised by RCI, while the M.Ed syllabus is in the process of standardisation.

However, there is tremendous need for educating students or potential entrepreneurs about solar industry and its business opportunities. Educating the customer about the benefits is equally important along with proper support system for entrepreneurs will push the growth and demand for the products of this nascent industry. “There is a lot of gap between the power demand and supply. This gap can be a business opportunity for budding entrepreneurs. There are range of off-grid applications that are based on solar photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies. Be it a LED solar lanterns, solar home lighting system, street lighting, solar security fencing, inverters, bore well pumping and solar community and domestic cooking, solar drying system (agriculture) and water heaters. Usage and innovations around these applications will decrease the usage of grid power and also encourage eco-friendly products,” D Venkat Rao, secretary, Quality Development Society. About the innovations and successful implementation of various appliances, he said, “There are many success stories in the recent years. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam has been successfully using one of the world’s largest solar steam cooking system. There are also initiatives to promote battery-integrated rickshaws. These are run by partly pedal and partly by battery power that is generated from the solar panels. On the support system to start an industry, Rao said, “There are various schemes that can be availed under the industrial promotional policy and electronic hardware policy for setting up a solar appliance industry. There are also special incentives for women entrepreneurs and additional incentives for SC/ST

entrepreneurs. “Potential entrepreneurs or students interested can also attend a four week subsidised educational program on Solar Power Technologies, that is run by us with the support of ministry of small and medium enterprises. “There are many misconceptions about solar appliances and their effectiveness, which need to be changed with proper informative campaigns by the state government along with the support of NGOs. “States like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are giving various benefits for using solar appliances. For instance, it is mandatory to install a solar water heater for certain buildings in Karnataka and there is a monthly rebate on electricity bills. Such initiatives need to be encouraged in our state to support this growing industry. “The promotion and usage of solar-based appliances, will not only bring cost savings for the customer but also helps to nullify the power scarcity and promotes safer environment,” he said.

In a democracy, how can a person, merely because he is holding an office, be excluded from prosecution? The Constitution excludes the prosecution of the President and governors in some cases... One can’t apply the same principle on a man who passes executive orders on a daily basis,” he said. Responding to a query as to

On being queried on Kejriwal’s possible expose on corruption in judiciary, Hegde said, “Haven’t we heard of malpractices in judiciary? Servicewomen sue US military over combat ban LOS ANGELES: Four US servicewomen, including two who won Purple Hearts in Afghanistan, sued the Pentagon on Tuesday over its policy barring women from ground combat. Backed by rights watchdog the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), they slammed

the policy as an “injustice to the women ... who continue to put their lives on the line for their country.” In practice women have served in combat roles for years, they said — but US military policy still bans them, resulting in a “brass ceiling” in which women cannot be

promoted because of lack of recognized combat experience. “Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be an Air Force pilot, and I have proven my ability every step of the way,” said Major Mary Jennings Hegar, a rescue helicopter pilot who flew

RECOGNISING PALESTINE

Diplomatic triumph, cash losses await Palestinians US cut $70 million after Unesco admitted Palestine as member.

UNITED NATIONS: The Palestinian bid for UN recognition on Thursday could bring president Mahmud Abbas new diplomatic weight and tools but also cost his people hundreds of millions of dollars in muchneeded cash. Abbas is assured of triumph at the UN General Assembly when he seeks backing for his bid to go from “observer entity” to “non-member observer state”. The US and Israel will not be able to spoil his big day. Victory will not give the Palestinians a vote at the 193member assembly. But they will be able to join a number of UN agencies and sign treaties for which the UN secretary general is the record keeper. The Palestinians will be able to go to UN conferences open to all states and to vote like other states. The Vatican used its observer status to raise sensitive issues at UN conferences on women and population. The most valuable prize for Abbas, however, could be

recourse to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The prospect of an ICC prosecutor looking into Israeli actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank is one of the Israeli government’s major worries from Thursday’s vote, according to diplomats. Abbas wants super-observer status at the UN to boost Palestinian recognition and force Israel back into talks

which have been frozen for more than two years. The United States and Israel say the UN vote will change nothing and that Palestinians must return to talks without conditions. The United States and Israel could also inflict financial damage on the Palestinians — who are suffering from a grave economic crisis — and any UN agency where the Palestinian

Authority gains membership. US law bans financing for any international body which recognizes a Palestinian state. When the Palestinians were voted onto the UN Cultural and Educational Organization (UNESCO) last year, the US administration had to cut more than $70 million in funding. The United States is also the biggest single provider of development funds to the Palestinians. But about $200 million have been blocked by Congress, and the State Department warned this week that it could be difficult to release the money if the UN vote is successful. Israel has not directly threatened sanctions but has warned there will be fallout from the vote. It is contemplating suspending the transfer of tax and customs funds it collects for the Palestinians to “toppling” Abbas’s regime, as a foreign ministry policy paper proposed last week. AFP

Technology PRINTING THE FUTURE

The Third Dimension Yesterday we told you about a nutter who wanted to ‘print’ the first gun, but what is 3D printing, and why has it got tongues wagging and Pirate Bay drooling?

In a digital map revelation that Apple could only dream of, Sandy Island in the middle of the Pacific is about as sandy as an Olympic pool in Antarctica. For years Google Earth has shown a dark smudge in the middle of the Pacific, named Sandy Island, but claims never to have been able to see it. The World Coastline database, however, claims it exists. So when marine scientists looking to play Survivor decided to pay the island a visit, they were shocked to find nothing but briny waves where the island should have been. Score one for Google Earth, zilch for smelly human cartographers (who are probably using iMaps).

What is 3D printing? 3D printing is a process of making three-dimensional solid objects from a digital model. 3D printing is achieved using additive processes, where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material. 3D printing is considered distinct from traditional machining techniques (subtractive processes), which mostly rely on the removal of material by methods such as cutting and drilling. How much does a 3D printer cost? The costs can vary from $3,500 to well over $200,000. But FormLabs’s Form 1 printer will cost $2,499, making it the cheapest 3D printer for personal use. Professional machines usually start from $10,000.

NTSB SLAMS RIM Not that we like to a kick a bloke when he’s down, but in keeping with our engrossing coverage of the demise of RIM, the US’s National Transportation Safety Board has decided to drop its BlackBerries in favour of iPhones. It doesn’t just drop it inasmuch as throws it down and stomps on it. The NTSB says why: “NTSB requires reliable and stable communication capabilities to carry out its primary investigative mission and to ensure employee safety in remote locations.” Ouch!

How much is the 3D printing industry worth? Due to the fact that it’s still relatively nascent, the industry is worth about $1.3 billion. What materials are used by 3D printers? Plastics, glass, metal, polymers, human tissue, wax, edible food, and sand and glue mixes.

POLITICAL DRAMA

TALKING PEOPLE Deborah Cole

T

he political life of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe's most influential leader and the oftproclaimed world's most powerful woman, is a tale of paradoxes, driven by her own enigmatic nature. While angry protesters marching the streets of Athens, Lisbon and Madrid brandish posters of Merkel dressed in Nazi garb, the 58-year-old enjoys a level of domestic popularity unseen by any post-war leader before her. Merkel had to endure the fond but patronising nickname "the girl" bestowed by then chancellor Helmut Kohl, who made her minister for women's issues and later environmental affairs. But in 2000, the frumpy newcomer rose to the head of the CDU when she alone had the courage to tell Kohl to quit as party chairman over a slush fund scandal. Critics say her science background leads her to scrutinise the minutiae and at times dither, which in the crisis has left ailing European partners to twist in the wind. Rivals also find her chameleon-like qualities exasperating. Merkel was a staunch defender of nuclear power until Japan's Fukushima disaster last year, prompting a dizzying about-face that has seen her pledge to phase out all of Germany's nuclear reactors within the next decade. Her policy on aiding debtwracked countries has also seen her erase several previously fixed lines in the sand. Aides say that while she finds some of the most virulent criticism of her unfair, she dismisses it as the price of power.

D

eath has strange effects on people. Look at what it has done for late Shiv Sena supremo Bal

Thackeray. Eleven days have passed since the demise of the man who was a power to reckon with in Maharashtra politics, and every passing day is seeing more praises being sung for him — an outstanding posthumous achievement for a man who demonstrated to the country, with ruthless efficiency, how to perfect the politics of hate. From mid-1960s, when a nascent Shiv Sena began its vitriolic campaign against nonMaharashtrians, the outfit grew in strength. With the brutal crushing of Leftist trade unions, allegedly with money and muscle backing of industrialists, the Sena assumed the monopoly of violent enforcement — and Bal Thackeray was the guiding light and ideologue. The violent ‘lungi bhagao’ campaign of Shiv Sena targeting South Indians and their establishments unleashed a reign of terror, with the law and order establishment looking the other way.

Political leaders have been trying to outdo each other in showering praises on a man who has made no bones about his admiration for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler ‘for his talent as an artist, orator and a man who was the master of the mob’. He found a lot of aspects common between himself and the German dictator – who, with his lebensraum (living space) call, might have inspired Tahckeray’s Marathi manoos war cry. For a man, whose organisation literally rewrote workers’ rights and fought tooth and nail to destroy the cosmopolitan nature of Bombay (oops... Mumbai), the eulogies reflect the insensitivity of the political class in the name of political correctness and social niceties. There isn’t a major incident of communal trouble in Mumbai that doesn’t have Shiv Sena and Bal Thackeray written all over it. Thackeray’s skill in discovering a communal angle to every incident of consequence was unparalleled. The party mouthpiece Saamana, with regular inputs from Thackeray made sure that there was never any dearth of venom for public consumption. The Sri Krishna Commission too pointed fingers and Thackeray and his outfit for inciting the pogrom against Muslims in the aftermath of the

1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. For unemployed and frustrated Marathi youths who were looking for a punching bag, Bal Thackeray and Shiv Sena provided a platform for unfettered thuggery in the name of a ‘glorious cause’ — not to mention the massive cash inflow through extortion from businesses that weren’t deferential enough. With no arm of the government being able to challenge the might of Shiv Sena in MumbaiThane belt, the outfit assumed the extra-constitutional power of censorship. From literature, art, sports and cinema, there is no area untouched by Sena diktats — forcibly enforced in most cases.

For a political career spanning more than four decades, Bal Thackeray has left behind nothing but a bitter aftertaste — let us not even talk about Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray. The toxic politics that divides people and fills their minds with hatred has done tremendous damage to the social and political fabric of Maharashtra in general and Mumbai in particular. With son and nephew jostling to bear the torch, Mumbai has more pain in store. Let us not allow death to be the pretext for granting sainthood to Bal Thackeray. The writer works for Postnoon.

EDITORIAL No guarantees for right to life, a point proven

A

man has been killed because he came out and spoke against something that he thought was unjust and barbaric. All he did was marry the woman he loved going against the wishes of their families and then came out and spoke against honour killing on TV. And now he has paid the price with his life. These are modern times and yet there are regions and people that still adhere to barbaric laws, which call for elimination of anything and anyone that would want to change and progress. We come to know the sad story because the couple was on Satyameva Jayathe. His widow, who is nine months pregnant claims that her family is behind the killing and that her husband would have been alive if he had police protection. And how did the police react to the incident? Instead of being ashamed that they failed in their duty to protect and own up and nab the culprits, they dispute what the poor woman has said, saying that the he was killed over a personal feud. Need we look further for reasons for the real social shambles our nation is, why we are uncertain about our hopes of becoming a progressive nation? The fact is that certain regions in our country are not very different from places like Uganda, which is going through a dark age of its own, where homosexuality is a crime, laws against gays and lesbians are deemed a Christmas gift. The irony is that the right to life is barely guaranteed even when the nation celebrates anniversary of its Constitution. Did we hear someone say something about progress?

BURNING CALORIES EASIER WITH MATE? Those who exercise with a friend post better workout time and intensity by as much as 200 per cent. So says a study by Brandon Irwin, assistant professor of kinesiology at the Kansas State University. He and his colleagues tested whether individuals engage in more intense physical activity when alone or while competing against a team mate.

PAEDIATRIC EMERGENCIES

Child safety comes first

Paediatric emergencies can be plenty. But how many parents are equipped to handle them? Unlike adults, children require special care. Read on to know more. ANISHAA KUMAR

PR or cardio pulmonary resuscitation can be done in case the child is unconscious and not breathing and has no pulse. The techniques for CPR in children differ slightly from those in adults hence it is advised that parents should be aware of these techniques and get themselves certified in basic life support.

itika was busy cooking in the kitchen; her children were playing outside when she suddenly heard a loud noise and her 8year-old daughter crying. Her 10-year-old son came running to the kitchen, “Mummy, Kriya fell down, she is bleeding!” Such situations are a common sight in many homes. While keeping an emergency medicine kit at home is important, knowing what to do in emergency situations is also equally important. We take a look at six emergency situations in children and what parents need to do if such a situation arises.

BLEEDS According to Dr Kiran Krishnamurti, paediatrician at Andromeda Centre, “When it comes to cuts, pressure and ice are important. Both measures help contract blood vessels and control bleeding. If the bleeding does not reduce within 10-15 minutes or if it is coming out in large spurts then one should rush to the doctor immediately.” Talking about cuts and bleeding, Dr Mahesh Joshi, group director, emergency medicine, Apollo Hospital, says, “The two main problems that occur are bleeding and risk of infection. If a child is choking then the Heimlich manoeuvre can be implemented as it helps initiate cough reflux. Dr Joshi says that in case of choking in children, it is important to call for immediate help as even three minutes without oxygen to the brain can cause irreversible damage. If the child is less than five years of age then back slaps to the child behind the shoulder blades with the head pointed downwards should be done. This may help dislodge the object from the child’s throat. It is still advised to get medical assistance.

BREATHING “Breathing problems can be of two types and require immediate medical attention. The first is the baby turning blue or the baby being inactive or lifeless,” says Dr Kiran. Dr Mahesh says that

Dr Mahesh says, “Symptoms like rashes, itches and breathing difficulties signal an allergy. The first thing one should do is remove the source of the reaction. If the child is having difficulty breathing then immediate attention is advised.” Dr Kiran adds, “Some allergies can cause swelling around the wind pipe. This can cause oedema and occlude the windpipe. The first sign of such an allergy is breathlessness.”

HEAD INJURIES When it comes to internal head injuries, parents should look out for signs such as blurred vision, disorientation, confusion, difficulty in speech etc. These symptoms may be visible immediately or after some time hence it is important to keep the child under watch for 24 hours and visit the doctor. Keeping a basic first aid kit for bleeds and cuts can be of great help. It is important to have bandages and an antiseptic cream or liquid to clean the wounds. If your child is allergic and on some medication keeping that at hand is important. Most importantly one should look at keeping children, especially young ones, away from objects that may harm them and make older children aware of what they should do in emergencies.

Capillaries make lips red

Mani Lal Bhaumik

Sleep Machine is an advanced white noise ambient sound sleep app available today! With its uniquely elegant multi-sound player design, it's fun and easy to play, mix, and create a truly lifelike sound. Try mixing sounds like rain, beach, or wind. This app lets you create and save favourite ambient sound mixes.

Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx. It causes hoarse voice or the complete loss of the voice because of irritation to the vocal cords. Dysphonia is the medical term for a vocal disorder, of which laryngitis is one cause. Laryngitis is categorised as acute if it lasts less than a few days. Otherwise it is categorised as chronic, and may last over three weeks. The chronic form occurs mostly in middle age.

Human lips have a reddish colour because of the great concentration of tiny capillaries just below the skin. The blood in these capillaries is normally highly oxygenated and therefore quite red. This explains why the lips appear pale when a person is anaemic or has lost a great deal of blood.

Dr Bhaumik is credited with discovering laser eye surgery. He went to UCLA for post doctoral studies. In 1968, he was enlisted by the Northrop Corporate Research Laboratory, where he become the director of the Laser Technology Laboratory and led the team responsible for the development of the excimer laser technology. The application of this class of laser was then patented for Lasik eye surgery.

BREAKTHROUGH

Nip and tuck: face fixes for FB and the ‘like’

Youngsters have now opened up to cosmetic procedures to enhance their looks as it not only helps one get the look one dreamt of but also helps increase FB likes! NEW DELHI: For all those who thought botox jabs and nose jobs were only for those getting on in years, here’s news. An increasing number of youngsters are opting for non-surgical treatments to get that dreamed for face and maximise the ‘likes’ on their pictures in networking sites like Facebook. From rhinoplasty, a non-surgical nose job involving an injection, to botox, juvederm and laser treatments, youngsters are opting for them in a big way. Nikita Sharma, 21, who used rhinoplasty to correct the shape of her nose, talks openly about the benefits of her new look. “Flaunting physical attributes have become an integral part of one’s life. Through Facebook one can get so many opportunities like modelling, acting and even marriage proposals. So, if I put up my best picture with a perfect face (on social networking sites), it will do no harm. I am very happy after getting rhinoplasty.” This is a trend confined to not just girls but also boys and they are quite upfront about it. Like Mumbai-based Arpit Sharma, a theatre person, who used botox to get arched eyebrows. “When you act, you need to have a specific expression on your face. After a couple of months, I have a play in which I have to portray a negative character. For that I need that cunning look. So I got my eyebrows lifted with the help of botox and I think it is good, because it does not take much time and you don’t need to pay a hefty amount for that,” he said. This is quite the trend now,

cosmetic dermatologist Vandana Chatrath said. “These days, everyone, especially youngsters, wants to be popular. Most of them are not happy with their features. In order to have an enhanced look, they opt for non-surgical procedures,” Chatrath told IANS. “Girls usually opt for treatments like nose correction, lips enhancement, eyebrow lift and cheek enhancement whereas laser treatments are popular among boys,” she said. Dermatologist Swati Srivastava, VLCC, Mumbai, added that everyone wants “a perfect body and for that they

go for magical and effective treatments like botox.” And the young don’t believe in hiding it. “In some cases, they even upload their photos before and after surgery on social networking sites,” Srivastava said. The treatment varies with age. For instance, those in the 18-25 bracket opt for lip enhancement and chemical peels; those in the 26-35 group endorse treatments that promise a youthful look. The side-effects are few, it doesn’t take time and doesn’t cost too much. “Most of these treatments are lunch-time procedures done with injections; so

it takes not more than 15-20 minutes,” said Srivastava. “The cost depends upon the procedure and the area. Laser starts from `3,000. For nose correction, the cost is `20,000`30,000, whereas for cheek enhancement one has to shell out around `50,000,” said Chatrath. Youngsters look up to popular Bollywood stars and want to ape them. So, there are plenty of takers for Katrina Kaif’s lips and jaw line, Kareena Kapoor’s high cheek bones, and Shilpa Shetty’s hour-glass figure. And boys, want a jaw like Hrithik Roshan’s and abs like Salman Khan. IANS

Active lifestyle helps slow dementia

WASHINGTON: An active lifestyle helps preserve the brain’s grey matter and lowers the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), says a new study. More than 35 million people worldwide are living with dementia, and the numbers are expected to double by 2030, according to the World Health Organisation. “The grey matter volume is a key marker of brain health. Larger grey matter volume means a healthier brain. Shrinking volume is seen in Alzheimer’s disease,” said Cyrus Raji, radiology resident at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). Raji and colleagues recently examined how an active lifestyle can influence brain structure. They studied 876 adults of an average age of 78 years, drawn from the multi-site Cardiovascular Health Study. The patients’ conditions ranged from normal cognition to Alzheimer’s dementia, according to an UCLA statement. “We had 20 years of clinical data on this group, including body mass index and lifestyle habits,” Raji said. “We drew our patients from four sites across the country, and we were able to assess energy output in the form of kilocalories per week.” The lifestyle factors examined included recreational sports, gardening and yard work, bicycling, dancing and riding exercise cycle. “The areas of the brain that benefited from an active lifestyle are the ones that consume the most energy and are very sensitive to damage,” Raji added. “What struck me most about the study results is that it is not one but a combination of lifestyle choices and activities that benefit the brain,” Raji said. STUDY

Both passivity, hyperactivity can damage knees WASHINGTON: Both high and low levels of physical activities can speed up damage to the knee cartilage among the middleaged, says a new study. Researchers at the University of California — San Francisco (UCSF) previously had found a link between physical activity and cartilage degeneration. But that study focused on one time.

UCSF researchers looked at changes in knee cartilage among a group of middle-aged adults over a four-year period. They used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based T2 relaxation times to track the evolution of early degenerative cartilage changes in the knee, according to an UCSF statement. “T2 relaxation times generat-

ed from MR images allow for analysis of the biochemical and molecular composition of cartilage,” said Wilson Lin, research fellow and medical student at UCSF. Researchers analyzed 205 patients, aged 45 to 60 years. Participants used a questionnaire to record their physical activity. According to the results, partici-

pating frequently in high-impact activities appears linked with more degenerated cartilage and potentially a higher risk for development of osteoarthritis. “Those who had very low levels of activity had accelerated progression of T2 values. This suggests that there may be an optimal level of physical activity to preserve the cartilage.” IANS

There are several risky stunts in the film and during the film’s shooting Rana had suffered quite a few injuries while performing the stunts because he insisted that he do all the stunts himself. “As an actor I feel that stunt scenes done without a double are much more real and they exude far more realism in the body language and performance in the shot. It’s risky but I insisted that I don’t need a body double in the film.” Rana says. His decision to take the risk even resulted in third degree burns, but he insisted on completing the shoot after taking some medication. It’s a very deep character. I have hopefully achieved a good performance. It’s by far one of my most sensitive performances, I believe,” Kareena said ahead of the release of Talaash this Friday. Her role in Chameli cannot be compared with what she has portrayed in Talaash, says Kareena, who will be seen sharing the screen with Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji in the thriller. “ Chameli was totally different. It was very raw. The lingo and the language, body language and the outfit - everything was different. Here from head to toe, the performance, and everything is different,” she said, adding that she signed on the dotted line for Talaash because it allowed her to work with Aamir again. “I don’t look at the project with commercial aspect. The 35year-old had already met the movie’s casting directors several times for the part of naive housewife Celia Foote when she went to Lousiana to begin shooting indie film Texas Killing Fields. But when she was called back again and asked to fly to Hollywood for another meeting, the actress says she was hardly interested and almost rejected the offer. In an interview to Marie Claire, she said: “It (the auditioning process) had been stretched out for so long, and I thought it was because I wasn’t the right look, you know? KAKURO

How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column refer-

QUICK CROSSWORD

enced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so

on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

NUMBER THREE ON THE LIST

CINE BYTES

Back from the dead

Jim Beaver who plays Bobby Singer on Supernatural talks about the iconic episodes of the past and the return of his character in Season Eight. Q. Do you know how your character might be reintroduced to the show? I know that anything is possible. You know what? We are at the outer edges of what I can say without revealing any spoilers, so I’m going to keep my mouth shut and talk about what a thrill it is to be doing interviews for Supernatural. I keep sucking up to the powers that be on this show to keep me coming back for more. I’ve always been fairly successful at doing that in my career. When will we see Bobby Singer back on the show? I can’t say. Put it this way, I’ll be surprised if we’ve seen the last of Bobby. Q. How much of a challenge is it to keep storylines secret on a show like this? It’s a big challenge because you always have to watch what you’re saying. However, last season I actually had fun keeping the secret that Bobby was coming back as a ghost. I had a lot of fun with that because I went on Twitter and I lied to the universe. I told them all about this great movie I was making, but I wasn’t

actually making it. I posted photos I found on Google images of film crews in the snow and I was delighted to find that there were some people who were actually disappointed that I wasn’t making a movie about the abominable snowman. Q. Which Supernatural storyline was the toughest to keep under wraps? It was very tough to keep secret the fact that Bobby was going to get killed in the first place. I had to keep quiet for a couple of months on that news and I struggled. Q. How much do you know about Season Eight of the show? If I tell you about how much I know, it will tell you a little bit about what I know, so I can’t say anything. Put it this way, on a TV show the hierarchy is often established or symbolised by your number on the call sheet. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are number one and two on the call sheet. Because of how long I’ve been on the show, I’m number three.

Number three on the call sheet is often the last to find out anything. Let’s just say that this situation is not inconsistent with that. Q. What was the fan reaction to the iconic Season Seven episode where Bobby asked Sam and Dean to burn his flask? I haven’t heard too much of a reaction to that scene, apart from the fact that a lot of people were unhappy that it happened. There were also comments about the fact that the camera panned around to show Castiel watching with great interest. The fan base was really amazing in terms of how they dealt with Bobby’s demise. For the most part, they seemed unhappy that it happened. Q. In effect, you had to shoot two farewell scenes with Bobby. Which was the more emotional scene to shoot? The first one, during Death’s Door, was more emotional for me. When we shot

the burning of the flask, the thing that was foremost in our minds was not catching fire because that was a real bullet forge where we were shooting. They cut the dialogue that explained where we were burning the flask, but you can hear it on the gag reel. It was so hot in there. I didn’t have to stand as close to the heat as the others – but we were all about to catch fire, so it wasn’t emotional; we were just trying not to burn to death. Q. It’s been hinted that angels will feature heavily in Season Eight. Would you like to see Bobby return as an angel? I think that would be a great idea. Short of Castiel or somebody else bringing Bobby back to life; that would be a very interesting direction for the character. That’s definitely a possibility, and it’s a clever possibility – but again I can’t comment. There are no spoilers from me.

ASIAN TOUR

‘Golf war’ players win case

4 players had launched a legal action after they were fined and barred from Asian Tour events. TALEK HARRIS Agence France-Presse SINGAPORE: Four professional golfers forced the Asian Tour to pay back fines and legal costs and let them play on the rival OneAsia circuit after winning a lengthy court battle on Tuesday. The players — Australia’s Terry Pilkadaris and Matthew Griffin, Manila-based Dutchman Guido van der Valk and Malaysia’s Anis Hassan — emerged victorious after a yearlong restraint of trade case at the Singapore High Court. “The judge declared that all of those rules which allowed the

Major titles still top Tiger Woods’ wish list REBECCA BRYAN Agence France-Presse THOUSAND OAKS, CALIFORNIA: Tiger Woods, buoyed by a return to form in 2012, is hoping 2013 will yield the one thing that in his opinion makes a season great: a major golf title. “Any time you get a chance to be part of history and put your name on the biggest trophies in our sport, it’s a great year,” said Woods, who owns

14 major titles but hasn’t triumphed in one of the game’s four premier events since 2008. Woods spoke on Tuesday at Sherwood Country Club, where he’s preparing to defend his title in the World Challenge

invitational that he hosts for the benefit of his charitable foundation. He birdied the final two holes to defeat compatriot Zach Johnson by one stroke here last year and end a global victory drought, and then went on to win three PGA titles in 2012. “I’m very excited because last year at this point in time I was still not quite where I wanted to be physically,” Woods said.

Asian Tour to prohibit its players from playing on other tournaments... were restraint of trade and therefore null and void,” their lawyer, Christopher Anand Daniel, told AFP. He added the players may also be able to claim for damages as compensation for potential earnings while they were forced to sit out events. The case highlighted a major point of contention between the Asian Tour and OneAsia, whose launch in 2009 sparked what has been called the region’s “golf war”. Pilkadaris said he was “delighted” with the ruling.

Grandmaster Ahmed Adly of Egypt defeated giant-killer Ram S Krishnan in the second board to be in joint lead with Karthikeyan with 6.5 points. While the top board game between Lalith Babu and Sergei Tiviakov was a relatively quiet draw, in the upset of the day, Chennai based International Master P Karthikeyan brought down Grandmaster SP Sethuraman. The Slav game saw Sethuraman sacrificing a pawn and going for the initiative. Karthikeyan gave his rook for bishop and kept his chances going. Sethurman pressed for the win and missed out on tactics as white’s queen, knight and bishop battery decided the issue in favour of Karthikeyan. PTI

MIRZAYEV TRIAL

Russian court frees convicted fighter

NBA

Rasul Mirzayev hit 19-year-old Ivan Agafonov in August 2011 after an argument outside a Moscow night club. MARIA ANTONOVA MOSCOW: A Russian court on Tuesday freed a mixed martial arts champion from the Northern Caucasus after convicting him of involuntary manslaughter for killing a teenager, in a case that roused nationalist protests. Rasul Mirzayev, a 26-yearold fighter from the mainly Muslim region of Dagestan, hit 19-year-old Ivan Agafonov in August 2011 after an argument outside a Moscow night club. Although Agafonov seemed only slightly injured immediately after, he fell into a coma and died within a few days. Mirzayev was an undefeated Russian champion in the featherweight category of mixed martial arts -- an often bloody mixture of wrestling and boxing hugely popular in Russia -- at the time of his arrest. The long-running case was seen by Russia’s nationalists as skewed by the investigation in favour of the Dagestani man after his charge was changed from murder to the lighter involuntary manslaughter, with some experts arguing that Agafonov died because of hitting his head on the pavement. Tuesday, judge Andrei Fedin found Mirzayev guilty and sentenced him to two years of restrictions to his freedom in his home town Kizlyar, but not prison. The judge ordering him released after taking into account his year-long stay in jail pending the trial, and his family situation. “Shame!” some people in the audience yelled as the judge said Mirzayev was to be freed immediately. “The scum is being let go!” another person yelled. “The

SPORTS BRIEFS Chicken salad floors world champion Klitschko BERLIN: A chicken salad has managed to do what none of his opponents has recently achieved in the boxing ring -- to floor world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. The 36-year-old heavyweight champion was laid low for several days last week after eating a chicken salad in a Hamburg restaurant in the fashionable St Pauli district, reported German daily Bild. Having been taken ill after an evening meal, Klitschko had to call an ambulance during the night and was put on a drip by an emergency doctor. The IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO heavyweight title holder, who lives in Hamburg, was part of a group of four who were all sick after eating the same food at the

same restaurant. Klitschko, who defended his titles against Mariusz Wach in Hamburg on November 10, was back on his feet two days after the illness and attended an event in his native Ukraine.

life of a Russian costs nothing here!” Amid some commotion outside the courthouse, police detained nationalist leader Dmitry Dyomushkin, he said on Moscow Echo radio, calling the case “political”. Other commentators questioned why causing someone’s death qualifies as a lesser crime than dancing in a church, referring to the two-year prison sentence imposed in August against members of female punk band Pussy Riot.

‘I cried under my helmet’ BERLIN: "Yes, I cried under my helmet," Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel has admitted to German daily Bild on Tuesday, two days after winning the world title for the third season in a row in Brazil. "And fortunately the radio was broken so you didn't have to hear me cry like in 2010," he said, referring to the oft repeated moment, on German TV, from two years ago when he cried openly into the microphone after his first world title. At 25, Vettel is the youngest driver in history to achieve the hat-trick of world crowns.

Mavericks kept it interesting, cutting a 100-93 deficit with less than two minutes to play to 100-98 thanks to Carter. Thaddeus Young added 20 points and Jrue Holiday had 18 along with seven assists for the 76ers, who engineered a 10-0 scoring run midway through the fourth quarter to break an 81-81 tie. But the Mavericks kept it interesting, cutting a 100-93 deficit with less than two minutes to play to 100-98 thanks to

a three-pointer and a driving layup by Vince Carter. The Mavericks had a chance to tie it when O.J. Mayo was fouled in the lane with 2.5 seconds remaining. After Mayo missed the first shot from the foul line, he intentionally missed the second to give Dallas’s Jae Crowder a last chance off the rebound, but Crowder’s shot failed to drop as time expired. Philadelphia held Mayo, the Mavericks’ leading scorer averaging more than 21 points per game, to 11 points on fourfor-20 shooting. Chris Kaman led the Mavericks with 20 points and Shawn Marion had 17 in the defeat, which was the Mavericks’ second straight and their seventh in their last 10 contests. Former Sixer Elton Brand scored a season-best 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Decosse’s three world gold medals stolen

PARIS: France’s Olympic judo champion Lucie Decosse’s three world gold medals have been stolen in a burglary at her home outside Paris, police confirmed on Tuesday. The 31-year-old judoka’s home at Thiais, in the southern suburbs of the French capital, was broken into while she was attending the national championships in Montpellier as a spectator between November 23 and 25. The burglars “stole three

world championship medals, a computer and a bracelet”, police said. “Strangely, the thieves didn’t take much apart from my three world gold medals,” Decosse told French sports daily l’Equipe. “It’s not the end of the world but it’s annoying. These rewards have very strong memories for me. Luckily I had my Olympic medal with me. If they had taken that one...”. Decosse finally landed the only major title to elude her when she claimed Olympic gold in the women’s under70kg at the London Games last August, to add to her three world titles and four European crowns.

SOUTH AFRICA IN AUSTRALIA

Fight on for top spot

Complicating matters are several forced changes as the competitive nature of the first two Tests takes a heavy toll and just a three-day break. SCOTT COGHLAN Agence France-Presse PERTH: South Africa and Australia will both be forced to call on fringe players when the number one ranking in Test cricket goes on the line in the final Test starting Friday in Perth. After a tame draw in the series opener in Brisbane, South Africa’s batting heroics in Adelaide, led by a defiant unbeaten century from debutant Faf du Plessis, ensured the second Test also ended all-square despite a tense and dramatic last day. And it means both sides will tread the WACA ground with the chance to end the series as the top team in Test cricket. A win for South Africa, or a draw, would see the Proteas retain their position atop the rankings, while an Australian victory would put them back in the number one spot they last held more than three years ago. South Africa are likely to be without all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who played a crucial role in saving the Adelaide Test with the bat and exacerbated a hamstring injury. But skipper Graeme Smith is leaving the

ing the Proteas at the Wanderers last November, but has 190 wickets in 47 Tests. He also boasts a superb record at his adopted home ground, with 30 Test wickets at 18.13 in four WACA matches. “Hilfy and Sids have had a really heavy workload of bowling a hell of a lot in the last cou-

door open. “He is definitely not going to bowl but he could play as a batter,” said Smith. Australia go into the Test without young quick James Pattinson, ruled out for the rest of the summer with a side injury. Pattinson joined fellow paceman Pat Cummins (back) on the long-term sidelines and there is concern that experienced fast bowlers Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus will struggle in Perth after their final day

exertions in Adelaide. The Australia selectors have added three fast bowlers to a 14man squad for the final Test. Uncapped pair Josh Hazlewood and John Hastings, who have both represented Australia in limited overs cricket, come in along with forgotten quick Mitchell Johnson, while Mitchell Starc, 12th man in the first two Tests, looks to win promotion. Left-arm Johnson, the ICC Player of the Year in 2009, has not played Test cricket since fac-

They’re all very handy fast bowlers to be taking to Perth.” All-rounder Shane Watson returns from injury at Rob Quiney’s expense, while former captain Ricky Ponting retains his berth.

OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

Though Tendulkar has been out of form for a long time and has scored just 153 runs at an average of 15.3 in his last 10 innings. MUMBAI: Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar today backed the national selectors for not making changes to the Test squad in the wake of the crushing defeat against England in the Mumbai match, saying it was not required at this stage. The national selection committee persisted with the same squad for the Kolkata Test. Only Bengal pace-man Ashok Dinda (right) was drafted in the squad in place of injured Umesh Yadav. “There are quite a few youngsters who are knocking the doors. India could have tried a few youngsters if they were 20 up in the series. We can’t make

wholesale changes, it creates uncertainty...” Gavaskar told. “We have to look at the situations also. The selection committees are not keen to experiment or inject young blood. That has been the trend in the last couple of years and it has not changed.” Gavaskar said the biggest bane of India is complacency. “Complacency has been the bane of Indian cricket. For decades it has been there, even when I used to play. It has always let us down. When the opposition is 160 for 5 or six, we tend to relax and then the wicket-keeper with tail-enders have added 200 runs,” he added. PTI

Bindra critical of IOA election wrangling NEW DELHI: Beijing Olympics gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra (above) today criticised the country’s sports administrators for pushing the athletes’ interest in the background in the bitter campaign ahead of the controversy-marred IOA elections. Bindra, who was taking part in an event in Munich, said he

was shocked when some people told him that India could be disaffiliated by the IOC if the IOA elections are held under the government’s ‘Sports Code’. “I did not know much what’s happening in India. But I was shocked to be told by somebody that India could be disaffiliated by the IOC,” he added. PTI

Redknapp debut gets point Harry Redknapp’s first match as Queens Park Rangers manager saw the basement club collect a point in a goal-less draw away to Sunderland. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse LONDON: Harry Redknapp’s first match as Queens Park Rangers manager saw the Premier League saw the club secure a point after they drew 0– 0 with Sunderland on Tuesday. It was QPR’s first point since they drew 1-1 with Reading on November 4 but the result meant the west London club, who last week sacked Mark Hughes as their manager, remained bottom of the table. But in the day’s other topflight match Aston Villa moved out of the bottom three after

Christian Benteke’s goal 10 minutes from time secured a 1-0 win at home to fellow strugglers Reading. Victory moved Villa two points clear of the relegation zone, with QPR eight from safety. “We worked hard and we

deserved a point tonight,” said Redknapp, whom QPR’s Malaysian owner Tony Fernandes hopes can repeat the rescue missions that helped both Portsmouth and Tottenham stay in the Premier League after poor starts to topflight campaigns.

“We defended well and denied them chances,” Redknapp, also told Sky Sports. “I feel more optimistic tonight than on Saturday (when QPR lost 3-1 to Manchester United). “I saw enough tonight to think we can go on a small run and keep ourselves in the pack.”

BIRMINGHAM, UK: Christian Benteke (above) proved a more than able stand-in for record signing Darren Bent by scoring the winner that saw Aston Villa beat Reading 1-0 on Tuesday. Victory, only their third in the league this season, lifted Villa out of the bottom three while Reading remained in the relegation zone. It also helped Villa manager Paul Lambert justify his decision to leave Bent out of his squad entirely for the second successive match. However, it was not until 10 minutes from time that Belgium international Benteke ended a run of a four-games without a goal by heading in a corner from Ashley Westwood. Villa dominated possession and chances, with Benteke testing Reading’s keeper Adam Federici early on with a low shot.

Chelsea ‘regret’ racism row Last week the FA said there was ‘no case to answer’ over allegations Clattenburg said ‘shut up you monkey’ to the Nigeria midfielder during a match. JULIAN GUYER Agence France-Presse LONDON: Chelsea expressed Tuesday their “regrets” over the way they complained of racist abuse by referee Mark Clattenburg (left). The European champions, in a joint statement with referees’ body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and the Premier League, admitted they should have “given more consideration” before making their allegation public. Last week the Football Association (FA) decided to take no disciplinary action whatsoev-

er against Clattenburg following an investigation into Chelsea’s allegation he used “inappropriate language” against midfielder John Obi Mikel. That followed an earlier decision by police to end their enquiries into the incident due to a lack of evidence. Chelsea said on Tuesday they “would welcome Clattenburg back to Stamford Bridge in the future and PGMOL would have no issue in appointing him to a Chelsea FC match going forward”. The London club also said it regretted the “intense media scrutiny” Clattenburg had faced as a result of their allegations.

Clarke expects action over Lukaku ‘abuse’ LONDON: West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke said Tuesday he expected “appropriate action” after police opened an investigation into allegations striker Romelu Lukaku was racially abused at Sunderland. Police announced they were looking into a complaint after a Sunderland supporter was pictured apparently making a monkey gesture towards the Belgium international after he scored a penalty in his

side’s 4-2 victory at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. A spokesman said: “Police are carrying out enquiries after a report of racist abuse was received at the Sunderland v West Brom match on Saturday. “A report was received at 10.10pm on Saturday.” Baggies boss Clarke was critical earlier in the day of the behaviour of fans of his former club West Ham during the match at Tottenham.
