Telangana activists damaged a toll plaza and set one of the booths on fire after forcing out the employees early this morning at Nanakramguda.

W
ith T having been denied, Telangana supporters belonging to Telangana United Forum (TUF), early this morning went on a rampage, torching a toll plaza on the outer ring road near Nanakramguda and created a terror in the whole area, leading to a huge pileup of traffic.
The activists, numbering 5070, first asked the employees to leave but some of them objected. As the crowd was not in the mood to plead, they pulled the employees out, and in the scuffle one employee suffered injuries. Realising they were confronting a group of desperadoes; employees gave up resistance and ran for safety. Activists then set fire to one of the eight booths and destroyed records, computer and furniture.
As it was early morning, not many people were around. One of the toll gate employees told Postnoon that the T activists were shouting slogans hailing Telangana and had been abusive of the Central government. They flung pamphlets in Telugu around that demanded a separate state. By the time the police reached the scene, mobs had vanished leaving behind banners, bills and pamphlets. As the
event kicked up a fear and consequent piling up of traffic, toll gate managers began manually operating. By 8.30am the traffic began to move at a normal pace. As the news of violence was conveyed to Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, he called up DGP Dinesh Reddy asking him to arrest all the suspects without delay and consideration. The CM is said to have made it clear that no sympathy or consideration must be shown to the violent
mobs and they should be booked immediately. Director general (law and order) SA Huda has alerted the SPs and armed personnel posted at all the 11 toll gates around the City and ORR. Meanwhile, the police and RTA have begun checking vehicles coming from districts to the City in view of the Ganesh immersion tomorrow and Telangana March on Sunday. With inputs by Rahul Ramakrishna

he Golconda police have picked up a gang of four which has allegedly been targeting supermarkets that do not have closed circuit TV cameras. Police have recovered goods worth `30,000 and are optimistic of tracking down more of them. The accused have been identified as Mohd Abdul Javeed, 23, resident of Hijra Colony Alkapuri, Mohd Abdul Hannnan, 23, resident of Samtha Colony Toli Chowki, Shaik
Zahid, 23, of Meraj Colony Toli Chowki and Shaik Adnan Ahmed, 22, a resident of Shyaam Nagar Chacha Nehru Park Masab Tank. Two others in the gang, Shaik Jameel and Farahaz Khan have given the police a slip, inspector Waheeduddin said. Sub-inspector of Golconda police G Naresh Kumar and his team were arrested on Wednesday from a shop at Galaxy crossing. Kumar said the gangs would go as well-dressed respectable customers and browse through the racks, carefully, and pocket highly-priced
cosmetics and trinkets before stealthily walking out of the store. The gang would later sell them for a price lower than MRP to small shops. For the past six months this gang has been looting supermarkets. The police said many supermarkets, to save money, would not install CCTV cameras and lost goods. There are several gangs in operation and the police have once again urged mediumsized supermarkets to install CCTVs which proves a deterrent. The markets have also dispensed with the mandatory metal detector frame.

L
ast year, we had reported how working professionals were worried about the effect of unscheduled strikes as they had no support system, like relatives, to take care of their children in case of sudden holidays or bandhs. Shopkeepers too were upset because the frequent bandhs were causing loss of business and they were suffering major losses.

he held their gaze, she held their thoughts. Her singsong voice rose and fell, her speech quickening and slackening. Some of her lines were lyrical, the beat of which she kept with her feet. Of the two score who were at Oxford Bookstore to attend the storytelling workshop of Jo Blake Cave, not one missed a word of the stories she singlehandedly wove and presented through her voice and gestures. She told four stories: of a man who never had any luck; of John Chapman going to London Bridge; of the old soldier who beat death and of truth and story, all of which her audience of children and adults thoroughly enjoyed, a fact testified by their giggles, laughs and 'oh’s' of dismay. Jo even got the audience to
recite some of the refrains with her: “He walked and he walked for a week, and a month and year and the farther he went, the farther he got,” as she told the story of the man who had no luck. Jo, who is from Northamptonshire in England, has

returned,” she said. “Then I attended a storytelling session.” Since then, she has been telling stories, in the beginning to friends and then to the world. Jo does not memorise stories or read out from a text when she is on stage. She may have read it somewhere and then, retaining the skeleton of the story, she weaves one of her own. Each time it is retold, it appears to have something new, for her and for her audience. Jo grew up among books. “I remember my father had a wardrobe, but it had no clothes, only stacks of books (apart from the many shelves of books in our house),” she laughed and said. “We would open it carefully lest the books fell on us.” It’s folklore and myths that Jo narrates. She has a fascination for Russian folklore. “I don’t know why, but I am fascinated by it,” she said. Perhaps it could be because of the tiny devils in it.

DP chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on the Telangana issue has been creating differences among the party leaders. Thamballapally TDP MLA Praveen Reddy on Thursday lashed out at Naidu for addressing the letter to the prime minister and demanded that the letter, in favour of Telangana, be withdrawn immediately. “Otherwise, Naidu has to change the party’s name to ‘Telangana Desam’,” he warned. Praveen Reddy said that the Telangana March on September 30 was meant to attack Seemandhra people. It was bad that the Telangana TDP MLAs were extending support to such a march. He said he would lodge a protest during Naidu’s proposed padayatra. He also warned Naidu that he was ready to tender his resignation if the latter failed to withdraw the letter. “It was not proper for Naidu to address a letter to the Prime Minister in favour of Telangana being a Rayalaseema person.” He added that the party has become directionless after 2009 elections and the party chief was taking wrong decisions since then.
NAIDU LETTER FOR POLITICAL GAIN: BOTSA Lashing out at TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu for addressing a letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh demanding all-party meet on Telangana issue, PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana has said that the former addressed the letter only for political gain. Speaking to the media in Hyderabad on Thursday, Botsa Satyanarayana said that there was no clarity in Chandrababu Naidu’s letter. He also alleged that Chandrababu Naidu has the habit of changing colours in tune with the changing times. NSS

COP-11
Despite efforts, patches show With three days to go before the conference on biodiversity, the GHMC is still rushing through pending works. A reality check however, shows that it is practically impossible to finish them in 72 hours. RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com
S
eventy-two hours before the CoP-11 curtains will be raised, the state of roads and awareness about the prestigious meet comes as a shocker. Among the 12 important routes to be used by the delegates attending the conference, the main route from Hitex to Madhapur and Jubilee Hills stands out as an example of the sarkari pace of finishing works. The Madhapur main road’s widening still remains incomplete, debris lies scattered, and in one particular stretch, a fallen electric pole, not removed, remains a threat to the motorists and pedestrians.(see picture) A reality check by Postnoon brought out the startling fact that the traders and general public have little idea about the world conference about to happen. A software employee working in Cyber Towers said, “I do not know what this biodiversity conference is all about, but it has proven to be a nuisance, with all the road digging and traffic problems.” A street vendor
Lakshman says, “I don’t know why such a big fuss is being made about some foreign nationals coming here. The police have put a blanket ban on all our stalls on this road here for the next 18 days. We were hoping it would be a good business opportunity, but it looks like there will be no business for us.”
According to a contractor, widening the road will take at least another month, but the CoP begins in 72 hours!
The Madhapur road will be the most important as it is connects to the meeting venue from the City and vice versa. The greenery works that included laying new carpet lawns on the dividers have been finished, but the road widening projects including the pavement repairs and moving electric poles has
been stalled. “The recent strike by contractors and rains has delayed works. However, we will finish them soon,” officials at GHMC say. Pedestrian crossings and zebra crossings are yet to be completed. The intermittent rains washed away part of the beautification works. Private property owners along the road, who are important stakeholders have not been told how to present the best face to the world. “Police have been telling us not to allow parking, beyond that I don’t know anything,” admits an automobile parts owner on the Check PostMadhapur road. While the GHMC promises to finish the work before the conference, a labourer Raju working on the Madhapur road says, “Drilling and removing the existing footpath itself will take three days. Widening the road will take at least another month.” Citizens we talked to said in an overpopulated city like Hyderabad where there’s no control over the migrant labour, we can’t expect a spic and span set up. “Let them (delegates) also have a glimpse of ‘Hyderabadi style’,” laughed a merchant.
FDI
AP ryots’ body behind FDI decision? Farmers are joining the kirana shop owners’ struggle against the FDI in multibrand retail. Farmers’ apex body met in Delhi on Tuesday and decided to hit the streets as MNC retail giants will ‘debilitate farmers’.
PK SURENDRAN surendran.pk@postnoon.com
A
farmers’ association in Hyderabad played a ‘villainous’ role in impelling the government to allow FDI in multibrand retail. “Two farmers’ organisations, one in Delhi and the other in Hyderabad, funded by the MNCs had lobbied strongly for the decision,” disclosed Yudhvir Singh, Asia Coordinator of International Farmers Alliance. Singh said the two associations had been working behind the scenes for furthering the interests of the foreign retail giants who have lost ground in their own lands. He questioned why the UPA government was bartering our retailers’ rights for a few dollars. “Which farmers’ interests are they talking about?”
“Why,” Singh asked, “the government did not consult farmers and rush through the decision if it had nothing to hide.” He said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s address on this aspect was the most irresponsible and cruel statement claiming the government knows the best. Meanwhile, a new dimension is added to the kirana shops’ anguish against FDI in retail.
Farmer leaders of six farmer organisations across the country that met in New Delhi on Tuesday this week to discuss the ramifications of the UPA government’s decision to allow FDI in multibrand retail have decided to join the Kirana shop owners’ protest and come out to the streets to make the government reconsider the decision. A joint action council of all
farmer bodies will meet on October 10 to chalk out an agitational path, said MJ Khan, national convener of Federation of Indian Farmers Organisations. Khan cited the data of International Farms Comparison Network (ICFN), which proves how within 14 years in US and in UK, the share of farmers in the consumer spent for farm produce reduced by almost 40 per cent from 1996 to 2010. Khan said that today the farmers’ leaders just want to know how this decision will benefit them, without taking any stand. The final stand will be taken on October 10, 2012 in the National Convention of Farmers, where all the farmers’ organisations from across the country will be jointly hosting the meet under FIFO and all political parties as well as these corporations
would be invited to speak on this issue. Krishanbir Chowdhary, president of Bhartiya Krishak Samaj said that no farmers’ organisation was consulted on such an important issue and the UPA government is saying that it will benefit farmers. He asked, how the nuclear deal, SEZ land grab project and similar other hastily rushed in decisions have benefited the farmers? He sought to know that Walmart is showing `54 crore spent on lobbying in India, then on whom this money was spent, and lobbying being an illegal activity, how the same has been permitted. He said that if farmers are not consulted and clarified their doubts, then farmers will come on streets under Join Action Plan of all Farmers Bodies, after the National meet under FIFO on 10 Oct, 2012.

T-TDP leaders extend support Announced that they will support the march to be held by the T-JAC on Sept 30.
T
DP Telangana leaders Errabelli Dayakar Rao, Mothkupalli Narsimhulu and Kadiam Srihari announced that they were supporting the Telangana march of TJAC on September 30. They said that Telangana ministers and MPs should strive to get permission for the Telangana march if they were really sincere. They said that TDP functionaries in the entire region would hold protests at district centers and mandal headquarters on September 29 . They also opined that there was clarity in the letter written by Naidu to the PM on the Telangana issue. Some parties were misinterpreting it and trying to
gain political mileage, they alleged. They made it clear that they were committed to the letter given to Pranab Mukherjee in 2008 and Naidu again confirmed it. The TDP would send a representative if the Centre holds allparty meeting on Telangana, they added. Questioning TRS chief KCR’s demand for an all party meeting, they asked whether KCR was sold out for any package.

elen Keller’s Institute is the first English medium school for deaf students in the state. The institute, which is recognised by the R.C.I New Delhi & Affiliated to Osmania University, offers education in audiology for able students up to the degree level. It has also has a thriving school community in Secunderabad. The Baba Clinic offers free audiological testing for each student which helps to provide precise information on their hearing impairment, thus enabling better treatment. There are three Helen Keller Institutes in Andhra Pradesh— Secunderabad, Bapatla and Kadapa. All three institutes share the same vision, “To empower the individuals with hearing impairment and communication disorder by providing equal opportunities in all walks of life”. In the Secunderabad branch there are currently 730 hearing impaired students and 197 fully able audiology students. The staff of 60 teachers is determined to make this institute a welcome place for all such students. P Ummar Khan, Rehabilitation Psychologist cum Educationalist Founder and director of Helen Keller’s Institute has 26 years of experience in the field of rehabilitation for the disabled. He has
dedicated his life to ensure that education is provided for deaf students in Andhra and apart from the institute he has more plans for the future as well. His vision also includes establishing early intervention rural projects all over the state (under CBR program). To establish a correspondence training course for parents of the deaf, along the lines of the programme set up by the John Tracy Clinic – USA. To build a university here in Secunderabad for deaf students. The biggest challenge faced by the institute is funding. Despite partial help from the government, it largely depends upon support from businesses or individuals for funding. governmental façade that is bound to draw a large number of delegates is Paryatak Bhavan (tourism house) at Begumpet. While officials have put up a large board welcoming CoP delegates, they have done nothing to give the interior a makeover. Nor have they appointed smart men and women to handle such a bewildering variety of gentry that an international conference would bring. As one enters the office, what comes into sight first is a badly mauled air conditioner propped up on a wooden stand, standing like a skeleton in a medical lab. The building has not been given a dab of paint. A funky smell greets you. Over all, a newly introduced parking fee charges a two-wheeler `5 per hour! And, for four-wheelers, it’s `10 an hour. This was introduced from September 3. Why? There is nobody to answer. Not only overseas delegates but also Indian delegates from other parts of the country would be extensively using this office. What image they will take back of our City is anybody’s guess.(SS)
NEGATIVE REPORTING ‘UPSETS’ OFFICIALS After blaming rainfall for slow
another receipt book that was allegedly being used as the master record book. “One for the public, one for the records,” he said. Furthermore, the privilege of shaving customers an extra 2 per cent from the total bill for using credit/debit cards is reserved for those who have a setting on the card machines. Which is why there are only a few wine shops in the City that charge this mysterious “transaction charges” while selling overpriced liquor. (RR)
UGLY SIDE OF BEAUTIFICATION progress of CoP works, it’s time for the GHMC officials to carp at the media for negative reportage. “Why do media people always pick holes, rather than focusing on positive aspects?” asked aloud one of the additional commissioners. However, the additional commissioner missed the point that chief secretary Minnie Mathew herself had expressed her reservations at the works, like road-making at the eleventh hour. Postnoon take: The fourth estate plays the role of critic on behalf of people. Its role, therefore, is essentially that of an opposition. Besides, honestly, officials have forfeited public trust, thanks to
corruption and nepotism. Hence, media picks holes more than the roles. (MN)
ONE FOR THE CAESAR, THE OTHER FOR ME! During a recent news scoop about liquor merchants selling overpriced liquor, a routine conversation yielded many interesting facts about this sale. For example, a wine shop in Jubilee Hills sells liquor above the MRP and was even ready to offer a receipt for the transaction. When questioned about how a receipt book can have faulty records, the vendor promptly pointed to
The clumsy, last-minute touchups to the City for the world conference are evident at Bamboo Park on Road Number 36, Jubilee Hills. This benign park, desolate and neglected on the arterial road, displays a large board that is purported to tell the public the importance and features of the park. Sadly, like everything else in our society, selfish advertisers have defaced the board so badly that it looks like a scarecrow in a paddy field. Adding pathos, and a touch of hilarity to the scene, is a large billboard (see picture) showing Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy welcoming delegates to the ‘city of biodiversity!’ One look at the park is
enough to make delegates wonder at the insensitivity of the people and the government. Pray, can’t we avoid insulting the City? (PK)
DIGITAL FEARS OF MANTRI
The State government proudly proclaims it practises e-governance. But when it comes to its own ministers, many are scared of using computers and tools like power point presentations. These ministers don’t mind showing their hatred towards these mechanised brains in public as well. One such minister is P Sudharshan Reddy, who heads the major irrigation ministry in the State. During the recent Praja Patham programme, an official project of the State government launched at the behest of CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy with an objective to give wide publicity to its welfare programmes through the media, Sudharshan Reddy was supposed to address the press conference using a power point presentation. Reddy outsourced it to his officials. When this correspondent inquired the reason from a close aide of the minister, he simply smiled. any politicians act smart when they are confronted with a volley of questions by public in general, and media in particular. But State Cabinet minister for minority affairs Syed Mohammad Ahamadullah does not mince words if he is not prepared to face the questions. He is as simple as plain paper. Not for him the niceties and etiquette. So, if you are a glib urban dandy, all of smiles and sweettalk, you’d get a shock when he asks you to sit out and wait your turn. Ask his detractors, and they would say he is unfit to hold the post of minority welfare minister as he lacks grasp of his department. They say that like a taped recording at an inquiry counter, all he says to queries is that the data is not available or action is on the cards.
Ahamadullah opens up if visitors are frank and informal. Despite his terseness, he is a jovial person. Ahamadullah entered politics as the heir apparent of Haji Mohammad Rahmatullah, an eminent Congress leader from Kadapa district, in 1977. Rahmatullah had achieved the record of holding the dual posts of Kadapa municipal chairman and MLA for 14 years.
Rahmatullah had also given political life to former CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy by giving him an MLA ticket from Pulivendula Assembly constituency. “My father played a key role in bringing YSR into politics. YSR gave me political life by making me Kadapa municipal chairman in 2004,” reminisced Ahamadullah. His is a renowned business family from Kadapa district. Being the fifth among 11 siblings, Ahamadullah could only study up to Class X after which he took up the family business. He says he was not very interested in bookish knowledge anyway. According to close friends of the minister, his weakness is that he hardly remembers anything. This defect has acquired him the title of ‘forgetting minister’. Ahamadullah, now a diabetic, loves to eat phirni (a sweet dish). “My late mother would make excellent phirni. I would love to gorge on it,” he said. He also announced that he has a secret dream to do something for Muslims but declined to reveal it fearing media attention. The minister loves to read newspapers as he falls asleep easily after reading them. “I think the best medicine for sleep is to read newspapers,” he says.

Countdown to Co P Hyderabad 2012
Duplicity of authorities kills Fortunately, the City fares better in parks than in lakes. Delegates of CoP may get a glimpse of some good parks like KBR and Lumbini but for citizens good parks in their locality is a rarity. The small parks that come under the GHMC are grossly neglected, misused and being encroached both by government agencies and private parties. The crux of the problem lies in the duplicity of authorities.
This is how we treat parks n Some of the parks are misused by the GHMC itself. One
such example is how the GHMC has converted one of the parks located in Chandanagar into a garbage collection point. n Land sharks have an eye on open lands in Jubilee hills
which have been allocated for parks and are blocking them from development. n The bamboo park in Jubilee Hills is used for anything but
leisure and rejuvenation. One can always find women washing clothes in the small pond.

arks are an ideal getaway from the busy city life. They are also an excellent stressbuster. One can relax and feel rejuvenated by spending a few quiet moments in these serene parks. These parks provide the perfect setting for kids to play . Today, citizens who stay next door exchange pleasantries through the latest technologies such as mobile phones, email and social networks because of their busy lives and lack of a common place to meet. Once upon a time, these green areas acted as a point for people of different ages to gather and discuss various issues, especially for the people in the colony.
WHO OWNS THE PARKS? GHMC: We have 18 circles in Hyderabad for better administration but you will not be able to find more than three to five good parks in each circle. The same GHMC administration maintains outdated and inaccurate information on their website (www.ghmc.gov.in/parks/parks.asp). The small parks in the GHMC areas are grossly neglected, misused and being encroached by both government agencies and private parties. The crux of the problem lies in the duplicity of authorities. Some come under the forest department,
take initiatives for building better parks.
some under the HMDA and some under the GHMC. And many are under the control of encroachers. The trouble is that most delegates check for information online and the GHMC website would prove to be a shame. Some parks in the City are under the urban forestry wing maintained by HMDA by classifying them under different categories: theme parks, colony parks, lake/STP parks, temple park, walkway gardens, memorial parks, medians and rotaries. Most of them are not maintained properly.
LINKING WITH CoP Today, with the CoP event, the GHMC officials are trying to showcase Hyderabad as a beautiful city, but tax payers living here know more about their City’s problems. Citizens are more worried about the way in which money is spent in the name of beautification for City dividers, road margins, which may not last for a long time. One good thing the GHMC has done is that they have constructed walls around parks in most places to prevent encroachments; the bad part is most of them are left deserted and lack basic facilities.
BIGGER PARKS Our government takes special care of the revenue generating ones. Parks such as Lumbini Park, Public Gardens, Sanjeevaiah Park, KBR
Park and Vengalarao park are more for tourism purposes. The common citizens don’t have a good park in their locality. And the same common citizen cannot come from Kukatpally to Indira Park or Lumbini Park everyday just to unwind. One of the officials stated that Shilparamam is a good park in Cyberabad zone. Perhaps he needs to learn and understand the difference between a park and an arts, crafts and cultural village. The absence of good parks in every locality forces many citizens to go to other areas. Many of us are not aware about what made older generations healthy and fit. The fact is they have had relaxed evenings. They used to spend time in a park where they got fresh air and could walk. But today, the younger generation prefers malls or gyms over parks. This could be because parks lack the basic amenities. On the other hand, I welcome the decision made by GHMC of making walking tracks near lakes if they have ensured that no damage is caused to the water body. Today, most of the parks have become a lovers spot and are restricted to a few people. Some strict rules and regulations should be framed. (Panasa Ramakrishna leads It’s Time to Make a Difference, a City-based NGO)
n Awareness through media like FM radio and libraries
could be undertaken to spread awareness about the health impact of parks. n Some NGOs or colony welfare associations can start
maintaining the parks. Most of the layout ventures that have been approved are not fulfilling their promises though they show open lands for parks in their plan after the approvals are done. Officials need to ensure they are implemented strictly.

aghuram G Rajan, former chief economist of the IMF, and currently the Chief Economic Advisor in the ministry of finance, government of India, a proponent of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), supported the recently announced 51 per cent FDI in retail by the Indian ruling government, calling it (FDI) the ‘safest form of financing’ because it is ‘long-term’ and brings in ‘competition’. He is also hopeful that the FDI would result in improvements in the logistical infrastructure. The UPA government has also claimed that the FDI in retail will change the supply chain and infrastructure at the farm level and will reduce wastages. On the other hand, the opposition claims that the FDI in retail will wipe out the so-called mom-and-pop store. The infrastructure is needed. But, the so called proposition that the infrastructure landscape will change due to FDI,
it’s a misnomer. Why is it that the large retail chains like Reliance and the Aditya Birla group have not been able to do it? They have deep pockets and the best talent in the world. The answer lies in the bottlenecks and the systemic problems that are there in the sector. Such infrastructural projects are not financially viable. The cost of funds are typically around 16-17 per cent for such projects. At this cost, a simple agricultural warehouse,

Recipients tell Facebook whether they accept gifts and delivery destination. SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook on Thursday added a feature that lets people send cupcakes, coffee, stuffed animals or other gifts to friends on the social network. Facebook said it was rolling Gifts out gradually, starting in the United States. “Every day, millions of people share special moments with their friends on Facebook,” the California-based firm said in a blog post. “Now, there is another way to celebrate these moments.” People can click on icons that
look like bow-wrapped boxes to select gifts from an array of merchants then send friends virtual cards either as private messages or for posting in public timelines at Facebook pages. Intended recipients tell Facebook whether they accept gifts and where items should be delivered. “There are hundreds of gifts with more added every day: cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery, a stuffed animal from Gund, or a digital gift card from Starbucks,” Facebook said. without land, costs between `400-500 per sqft to construct. And the going rentals are `5-7 per sqft. The return is less than the cost of funds. How will investment come into this sector? And this is without land. If you don’t have land, if you include the cost of land, the costs will go up to `1200-1300sqft. Even if you take the best of rentals (10-15 sft) at the most prime locations, it is still a negative NPV project. It is often said that food is being wasted due to lack of
infrastructure. Yes, the food does rot in the Food Corporation of India’s (FCI) warehouses. Have you seen any trader’s stock rotting? No. That’s because FCI has a populist mandate. FCI is supposed to be a trading organisation. It is supposed to buy the grains depending on the capability to sell, based on the demand from the Public Distribution System. It should have storage space, only then buy. They don’t do it and hence the grains get damaged. The mom-and-pop stores too will survive. They offer a different kind of paradigm and value proposition in comparison to the large stores. Another allegation is that the foreign retail companies have very deep pockets and can afford to make losses for 3-5 years. By then they will wipe out the mom-and-pop stores and then they will monopolise the market. It seems baseless. While the theoretical possibility is there, the cultural and systemic nature of India makes it a very remote possibility. Well, the reality is that FDI is neither a magical wand, nor a menace. It is about giving choice to the people of this country.

hey are as young as 12 and 7, but they have dreams of being police officers or dancers, fantasies that their hard lives as the children of pavement dwellers in the metropolis have failed to dispel. Take the 7-year-old boy who grew up amidst hooch sellers and drug pushers at a railway siding who wants to be a police officer when he grows up so that he can one day get rid of the scum of society. His 12-year-old sister wants to be a dancer and is taught Odissi by no less than Dona Ganguly at her school. The little girl now finds the crude language on the pavement laced with expletives shocking to her young ears. She says she forcefully tells neighbours on the pavement that use rough language at the drop of a hat to mind their language. “I will be an educated girl someday and a dancer like Dona Ma’am who teaches me,” says Priyanka, among the handful of children from the pavement under Durgapur rail bridge at New Alipore that NGO MS Welfare Society works with to provide a better life. “I try telling people I live with on the pavement that I have seen something of a better life

The NGO now works with 25 children in the age group of 6 to 13, whose parents at one time were sceptical about the purpose of the women who promised to change the lives of their children. "A few of them have been to juvenile homes for small offences and were getting hooked to crime when we took them under our wing in 2008,” says Krishna Chatterjee and Mira Das, who are members of the ngo. For giving the children a better life, the members contribute themselves and also receive help from friends and neighbours. “People wondered how long we could carry on, but we have been able to organise Vidyasagar’s birthday every year since then,” says Chatterjee and Das. “We also observe literacy day, forestry day with the children. They love to spend their time with us and prefer to stay with us as long as they can,” says Doly Banerjee, who is also part of the NGO. PTI

The aircraft crashed minutes after take-off from Kathmandu airport. KATHMANDU: Nineteen people, including 12 foreigners, were killed Friday when an aircraft crashed minutes after taking off from the international airport here, an official said. According to Sita Air employee Kapil Karki, who was at the crash site, 12 foreigners and seven Nepalese were killed. The aircraft, which was on its way for a mountain flight to Lukla from Kathmandu Airport, crashed within a few minutes of its take off. Karki said most of the dead were Italian nationals.

The rocky Hottah outcrop looks "like someone jackhammered up a slab of city sidewalk, but it's really a tilted block of an ancient stream bed," project scientist John Grotzinger said in a statement.

PERFECT WRITING

I
would have some advise. Take you’re time when you read this Article. I had to prepone writing it, because I am Flying later today, but irregardless, its an important one. My Parents’ learned me very young that writing good is a critical part of succession. So i defiantly have set my sites on accomplishing this must worthwhile of Goals’. Here are some Things I have learned: First, “advise” & “advice”
Dean Williams atching British PM David Cameron hilariously joust with the ‘probing questions’ from US talk show host David Letterman proves once again how out of touch India’s politicians are with the trends of a modern generation. Can you imagine Manmohan Singh being a guest on The Week That Wasn’t? Can you imagine Mamata Banerjee allowing herself to be the butt of jokes on Sri Lankan TV? The thing is that for a generation growing up in the age of YouTube, holy cows no longer pose a stumbling block to comedy or satire. Everyone’s a possible piñata whether you’re a religious leader, a celebrity, or a politician. The new crop of Western politicians like Barack Obama, Marco Rubio, and David Cameron understand this all too well, and use it to their advantage. In India, however, our politicians still feel they are far too important to be cut down to size with a satirical sword so sharp it can slice through their vacuous rhetoric with ease. Their aloofness is anachronistic, their self-importance a sham. What we need right now is a young, charismatic political leader who is not weighed down by religious dogma and riven by communalism. Above all, they should remember that they serve at the pleasure of the nation’s citizens and in doing so understand that they are no more important than a person tilling the fields. Maybe then we can watch him spar with wit and panache and be proud that they are Indian. The writer is editor, Postnoon.
HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS Several parties are crying hoarse over the government decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in retail. HFT struggles to understand why the customer should be refused the choice of better options. My money, my shopping experience. Kirana or Walmart, I will decide.
Sometimes, the mistakes are so bad I have no idea what the person is trying to communicate. Sometimes, they slip out of our company and embarrass me. are two very different Words. “Advice” is a noun, something you give Someone else. So you can offer advice, but you can’t offer advise because Advise is a verb, which is an action. Second, an apostrophe serves one of 2 Functions, and ONLY one of two functions. It either joins Two words’, like “you” and “are”, forming you’re. Or, it shows’ possession of something, as in a “foreigner’s observations.” If two people are possessing
something, the apostrophe comes after the “s”, as in “the two parents’ child.” if one person is possessing something, it comes before the “s”, as in “the single parent’s child.” Thirdly, “would” is conditional. You should only use it if there is, well, a condition. “I would give you what’s (notice “what’s”? In this case, it means “what is”) in my hand if you say ‘please’.” It’s a condition because UNLESS a condition happens…in this case, the word “please” is spoken…something else does not happen. Fourthly, THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS “PREPONE.” If i write that this article is “spectacularmondo” you probably get the idea of what I mean, but it’s confusing, and inappropriate in a business context. Same with “prepone.” Five, THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS “IRREGARDLESS.” And even if there were, it means the same, in theory, as regardless, so what is the point of using a longer and nonexistent word? Sixish, you can’t randomly Capitalise words. You can only capitalise the first letter of a sentence, proper nouns, and the word “I”. Anything else makes it seem like you are SHOUTING! Seventh, “defiantly” and “definitely” are completely different words, as are “diffident” and “different” and “house” and “hose” and a million other different words. It’s important to use the right word in a sentence or nobody nose what you mean.
Eighth, & this is an important one, you can’t use ampersands when writing. Just don’t use them. They are bad, like mosquitoes & car accidents. Nine, when talking definitively about something happening in the future, use “will,” not “would.” I “will” die in the future. Not, I “would” die in the future. You can only use “would” in this sentence if there is a chance you will never die… which, so far, has never happened. Tenth, when writing a series of points like this, they all have to start the same way. So if the first one starts “First,” than the second one has to be “Second,” not “Two.” Had enough? I see all of these mistakes every single day from prospective hires and from my current employees.
Sometimes, the mistakes are so bad I have no idea what the person is trying to communicate. Sometimes, they slip out of our company and embarrass me. And if you think it doesn’t matter, think about this: I would pay through the nose for an employee with great writing skills. I mean, it would add 3060 per cent to what I would otherwise pay them. Still not convinced? Then perhaps you should not consider my advise, prepone reading this and figure your childrens future will be fine irregardless of whether you take grammar and good writing certiously. or Not. he BJP national executive meeting in Haryana faces a tough challenge of coming up with a credible challenge to the UPA. The Opposition party has not been able to offer an alternative to the country in policy or politics. The disruption of Parliament has resulted in crucial legislations being held up and this has, in turn, affected public welfare. The saffron party’s personal attacks on the Prime Minister and the Congress chief have only bolstered their respective images. The internal squabbling has exposed the weakness of the BJP in crucial states like Rajasthan, Karnataka and Gujarat. Party’s prime ministerial candidate (albeit unofficial) and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi faces stiff opposition from several NDA partners, especially from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The allies are worried about an electoral backlash in the form of minorities unifying behind the Congress. Unless the BJP comes our with a credible plan for the 2014 General Elections, it might end up warming Opposition benches for another term.

he protracted issue of Telangana and the Centre's failure to take a call are threatening to spoil the world party scheduled to begin in the City 48 hours from now. Already, the taste of things to come was evident in the early morning guerillastyle attack of a tollgate on ORR. he general belief that I had been brought up with is that devotion is a prerequisite for religious celebrations but I guess I have got a bit out of touch with the times. As we prepare to move our astute gods back to their sleepy waters, our devotion is often hidden behind a bushel. Bhajans and keertans might have been replaced by film music and racy numbers, undoubtedly each being very creatively improvised to suit the occasion. It is not surprising therefore, to watch a lordly Ganesha presiding over a screaming horde of hipsters moving to a raunchy item number, because all music is, after all, a celebration. The film-loving public that
we are, we treat our filmy heroes like gods but now the tides have turned...we worship gods dressed as heroes. While in one corner of the city we have a Ganesha idol dressed as Pawan Kalyan in Gabbar Singh, in another we have Ganesha sitting on the latest sensation Eega. Also vying for attention are the Chota Bheem Ganesha and the Ganesha dressed as Rowdy Rathore. Imagine standing in front of the idol of Ganesh, hands folded in obeisance and just as you are about to pray, you hear goddesses of another kind with Munni badnaam hui .. darling tere liye. I could not but burst out laughing thinking what the lord must be feeling about Munni’s confession. Well, that’s not all, in the other five minutes that I spent trying to soak in the festive atmosphere at the pandal,

my ears were treated to songs the likes of Halkat Jawani from Heroine, Chikni Chameli from Agneepath and Dhinka Chinka from Ready. Well, maybe this is the only time Ganesha can truly enjoy. If it isn’t Sheila, Munni, Chameli or any other pretty lass, then it is Bodyguard or Gabbar Singh trying to please the gods. Where have the devotional songs gone? A few years ago, the music and moral police in our country were up in arms about this disrespect to the gods. So some creative souls came up with this brilliant idea of incorporating devotional lyrics into the latest Bollywood item numbers. So the tunes of Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast and the latest Tollywood number can be heard with a twist. Such is the devotion.
The local bands also are urged to drum up the latest item numbers and bhajans and keertans are a passe. Now, mornings are greeted by shlokas and songs dedicated to Ganesha and the evenings become wild thanks to the younger members of the puja organising committee. This is the tale at least in the locality where I stay. That’s not to say that the public is not devoted. The major pandals and associations in the city, have made sure that only traditional and religious music be played while the idol is in the confines of the pandal but when it comes to going for the immersion, it’s the fun-loving public that wins. The gods must be sent off, safe in the knowledge that there will be Tandoori Nights where Pappu Can’t Dance and where DK Bose must keep running.

WOMEN TWICE AS LIKELY TO SUFFER UTI Women are more than twice as likely as men to suffer from UTI caused by kidney stones, says a new finding. Researchers also found significantly higher rates of complications following treatments for the effects of urolithiasis, or stones in the kidneys and urinary tract, based on studies.
MATTERS OF THE HEART
M
ost people often associate heart disease with the elderly. Few realise the threat it poses to even the younger population. In fact, according to reports coronary heart disease (CHD) has been declared as the leading cause of death in India. While it is true that a woman’s hormones offer her some protection against heart disease initially, by the time she reaches the age of 60 the ratio of men and women suffering from CHD becomes 1:1. However, there are exceptions to every case and there are several women who suffer from heart ailments early on life. The reasons could be many, including congenital defects. Most of them are able to lead normal lives. They study, play sports, party, date and even enjoy married lives. The only big question that really arises is when a woman with a heart ailment wants to get pregnant. While most women want to go ahead and conceive, the fact remains that there are certain heart ailments that have a high mortality rate when it comes to pregnancy. “When someone with a heart ailment gets pregnant there are always issues about whether that patient is fit to continue the pregnancy or if it should be terminated. There are some cardiac ailments like pulmonary hypertension and stenosis, among others, that are extremely high risk and it is not advised to carry the pregnancy to term. At the same time someone suffering from a leaking valve stands to gain due to pregnancy as the hormones bring about changes in the blood circulation, preventing leaking of the valve,” says Dr Dayasagar Rao, consultant cardiologist at KIMS. However, even if a woman’s heart ailment allows her to go ahead with a pregnancy, extreme care needs to be taken. “Normally, we advise patients to consult both their cardiologist and gynaecologist to discuss whether a pregnancy is viable at all in their condition. If it is, then we need to explain to them the extra precautions that they need to take during pregnancy. Such patients require special advice, medication and care during pregnancy and delivery. There is always some amount of risk during delivery and afterward as well,” says Dr Dayasagar. “While most people are very concerned if a woman is fit for marital life with her heart condition, what a lot of them forget to consider is that if the mother has a congenital heart condition, it is likely that it will get passed on to the baby as well,” explains Dr Dayasagar.

Obese little ones ‘signing up’ for heart disease
Exotic pet boosts hope for medical miracles Scientists are studying the African spiny mouse that can shed 60 per cent of its skin. They hope this can one day help burn victims. PARIS: The African spiny mouse, a desert rodent that has become an exotic pet, can shed up to 60 per cent of the skin on its back and fully regrow the lost tissue, scientists reported on Wednesday. Understanding the trick could one day help burns victims in need of scar-free skin regeneration, they hope. The spiny mouse (Acomys) is well-known for eluding hunters by shedding its tail skin, rather as lizards jettison their tail. Exploring this phenomenon, biologists led by Ashley Seifert at the University of Florida in Gainesville found that the skin-shedding is even greater than expected. When they picked up two wild-caught specimens, Acomys kempi and Acomys percivali, the mice lost up to 60 per cent of the skin
on their backs when they were grabbed by hand in a normal manner. Closer inspection showed the skin to be remarkably fragile, requiring 77 less energy to tear than skin from its cousin the house mouse, Seifert’s team reported in the journal Nature. But how the animal is able to shed such a big area of skin so easily remains a mystery. The researchers were unable to find any breakage point. The
molecular or biomechanical properties are unclear. Even more impressive are the mouse’s healing properties. Within 30 days of the skin shedding, a double dermal layer had regrown, with new follicles and no sign of so-called wound-bed tissue, a precursor of scarring. The regenerative capacity extended to the mouse's ears, where a small punched hole became completely recovered
Closer inspection showed the skin to be remarkably fragile, requiring 77 less energy to tear than skin from the house mouse. with healthy tissue, including sebaceous glands and cartilage. “Mammals may retain a higher capacity for regeneration than was previously believed,” said the study. “Acomys may prove useful in identifying mechanisms to promote regeneration in lieu of fibrosis and scarring.” AFP
LONDON: Researchers have sounded warning bells on obese children as young as five-yearold who could be potential candidates for stroke or heart attack later in life. Obese or overweight young children have already been found to have raised blood pressure, cholesterol and other factors that could elevate their chances of a stroke or heart attack by as much as 40 per cent. Researchers from the Oxford university said the unexpected findings were extremely worrisome. The study comes as New York City puts a ban on largesize sugary drinks to help tackle obesity and related health problems in the US, the British Medical Journal reports. The team analysed the results of 63 studies involving 49,220 healthy children aged between five and 15 years. The studies measured weight and cardiovascular disease risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blood glucose levels, the Telegraph reports. “The relationship between obesity in children and cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure was much greater than we anticipated,” said study co-author Carl Heneghan, reader in evidence-based medicine at the University of Oxford. “The magnitude of the effect of obesity upon increasing cardiovascular risk in children is deeply worrying in terms of their future risks of heart disease,” Henegahn added. Synthetic drug promising for brain cancer WASHINGTON: Researchers led by an Indian-origin investigator are testing the suitability of a synthetic cannabinoid drug — dexanabinol — for curing brain cancer. Preliminary tests show that it kills cultured cancer cells derived from many tumour types, a US report says. Additional research in
Santosh Kesari’s neuro-oncology lab at the University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center, demonstrated the drug’s anti-cancer effects in patient-derived brain cancer cell lines. Kesari is the principal study-investigator. It could be given as a weekly intravenous infusion. More
recently, researchers at eTherapeutics, the study sponsor, showed that dexanabinol kills cultured cancer cells derived from many tumour types. Dexanabinol is a cannabinoid derivative that causes no psychotropic (altering perception or behaviour) effects. It was tested previously as a neuro-protective
in patients with traumatic brain injury. During these trials the drug was found to cross the blood-brain barrier. Dexanabinol’s potential in fighting cancer was identified through a new approach to drug discovery called network pharmacology. IANS

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

THE DANCE CHALLENGE
Jackie was toughest to dance with, says Madhuri
CINE BYTES
D
ancing diva Madhuri Dixit says among all her costars, she found it toughest to groove with Jackie Shroff. And it wasn't so because he had two left feet. During the shooting of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, judge Karan Johar made co-judge Madhuri, and special guest Sridevi, go through a rapid fire round, said a source. He asked them: "Which co-star was the most difficult to dance with — Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff or Sunny Deol? " Sridevi played safe and named her brotherin-law Anil, and said: "Anilji is family, so I don't think he will mind if I take his name." Madhuri recalled an experience of dancing with Sunny and Ajay Devgn on each side. " Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke was a movie that I had done and we were shooting an out an out dance number where I had Ajay on my right and Sunny on my left. They were both really nervous and they said we'll follow you, and I can tell you, we all did a lot of offbeat dancing, but it was great fun," she said. But when Johar taunted them both for achieveing a Ph.D in diplomacy, Madhuri opened up and said: "I think I will have to say Jackie, not because he couldn't dance, but because I couldn’t look in his eyes… He made me blush whenever I tried. Even when we were shooting Ram Lakhan and I would sing Oh Ram ji, I would blush," she said. IANS

MATCH PLAY All games are played under Match Play rules, where the result of each game is determined by the number of holes won. The order of play for the first two days is fourballs in the morning and foursomes in the afternoon. The final day's play will be in Singles format.
PETER HANSON (SWEDEN)
FOURSOMES (four groups of two two-man teams) "Foursomes" play is a match where two golfers play together against two other golfers and each team plays one ball. The golfers play alternate shots (player A hits tee shot, player B hits second shot, etc) until the hole is played out. Team members alternate playing the tee shots, with one golfer hitting the tee shot on odd-numbered holes, and the other hitting the tee shot on the even-numbered holes. The team with the better score wins the hole. Should the two teams tie for best score, the hole is halved.
Age: 27, Caps: 1 (2010) Record: P4 W2 H1 L1 Majors: 1 (2010 USPGA) World ranking: 32
FOURBALL (four groups of two two-man teams) "Fourball" play is a match in which each member of the two-man teams plays their own ball. Four balls are in play per hole with each of the four players competing. The team whose player has the lowest score on that hole wins the hole. Should players from each team tie for the best score, the hole is halved. SINGLES (12 groups of two one-man teams) "Singles" is a match in which one player competes against another player. A player wins the match when he is up by more holes than there are holes remaining to play. PAIRINGS Each Team Captain independently submits the order of play for his Team to the appointed tournament official. The lists from each Captain are matched, resulting in the "Pairings". Players in pairings can be modified by the Team Captains only if a player is ill or injured. Pairings are subject to change and should not be considered final until play begins for a particular match.

WBA CHALLENGE
‘Rock’ Rahman targets heavyweight title again
39-year-old Hasim Rahman got a relatively late start in the sport as he took up boxing at age 20 and had just 10 amateur bouts before making his pro debut at 22. to that. The Briton lost his WBC and IBF crowns in 2001 in a stunning fifth round knockout in South Africa before he regained them in a fourthround knock-out seven months later. The Baltimore fighter, nicknamed ‘The Rock’, then lost to Wladimir Klitschko in 2008 in Mannheim when the IBF, WBO and IBO titles were up for grabs. Rahman has won his last five fights, but all were low-key events. Povetkin, 33, defeated Ruslan Chagaeva in 2008 to win the WBA heavyweight title and has defended it with wins over Cedric Boswell and Marco Huck. He has also called upon the expertise of Russian-born Australian Kostya Tszyu, the former world light welterweight champion. “We have been building up my strong points and trying to eradicate the weaker parts to make me a more complete boxer,” said Povetkin, nicknamed ‘The White Tiger’. AFP
BERLIN: Hasim Rahman (right), who famously relieved Lennox Lewis of his heavyweight titles in 2001, bids to become world champion once again on Saturday when he tackles Russia’s WBA belt-holder Alexander Povetkin in Hamburg.
The Baltimore fighter, nicknamed ‘The Rock’, lost to Wladimir Klitschko in 2008 in Mannheim when the IBF, WBO and IBO titles were up for grabs. Despite his 40th birthday fast approaching, the American believes his record of 50 victories in his 60 fights — 41 inside the distance — can stand up to examination. “When I am on top, nobody can absorb the power of my punches,” said Rahman. The likes of Lewis can testify

WORLD CUP TWENTY20
SNIPPETS
SL, WI draw first blood WI and hosts SL earned hard-fought wins against England and NZ respectively in an exciting start to the Super Eights round in the World Twenty20. SHAHID HASHMI Agence France-Presse PALLEKELE: West Indies and hosts Sri Lanka earned hardfought wins in an exciting start to the Super Eights round in the World Twenty20 on Thursday. West Indies edged out defending champions England by 15 runs while Sri Lanka needed a one-over eliminator to upstage New Zealand, who fought back to tie the match from the jaws of defeat. Chasing a daunting 180-run target, England came close with Eoin Morgan (71 not out) and Alex Hales (68) putting on a resolute 107-run partnership for the fourth wicket but in the end they fell short. England had lost Craig Kieswetter and Luke Wright for first over ducks but Hales, who hit five boundaries and two sixes off his 51 balls, and Morgan’s 36ball knock, with five sixes and four boundaries, defied West Indies’s four-pronged spin attack. England needed 125 runs in their last 10 overs but Morgan and Hales paced the innings well

Rivals wary of ‘group of death’ KULDIP LAL Agence France-Presse COLOMBO: Four top contenders for the World Twenty20 title resume battle on Friday, looking for ways to emerge unscathed from the tougher of the two groups in the Super Eights round. Top-ranked South Africa take on Pakistan and India clash with Australia in a sold-out doubleheader at the Premadasa stadium in Colombo to launch the opening skirmishes in group two. All four teams showed their prowess by winning both matches in the preliminary league and
now face a fight to finish to book two semi-final spots from the group. “It is a tough group,” South African captain AB de Villiers said on Thursday. “Any of the sides can beat each other on any given day, so it is going to be a great challenge. “But if we play good cricket, we will be difficult to stop. We have prepared well for this tournament, to the extent that we are ready for even the Super Over if that becomes necessary. The Super Over — where teams scoring more runs in six balls from an opposition bowler win — comes into play if a match is tied. The South African captain’s
main worry ahead of Friday’s clash against Pakistan was how his team will cope against prolific off-spinner Saeed Ajmal. Asked if his batsmen had been able to understand Ajmal’s action, de Villiers said: “Not really but there are not many batsmen who can read Ajmal. “We have studied him closely and analysed his action. The important thing will be to watch the ball closely.” Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni agreed the real battle in the tournament will begin with the Super Eights. “We have enjoyed the tournament but the importance of the matches ahead multiplies,” said Dhoni.
Patil new BCCI chairman
MUMBAI: In a surprise move, BCCI on Thursday appointed former Test batsman Sandeep Patil as the chairman of the totally newlook senior selection committee while showing the exit door to Mohinder Amarnath, who was eligible to be reappointed. Patil’s appointment to the hot seat by replacing former batsman K. Srikkanth came as bolt from the blue, as his name was not even being talked about as a possible candidate prior to the Board’s 83rd Annual General Meeting, which finalised the panel here. Roger Binny (South), Vikram Rathore (North), Saba Karim (East) and Rajinder Singh Hans (Central) comprise the rest of the new panel. Amarnath has been dropped after just one year in his job. PTI
Board can advertise for new IPL team MUMBAI: BCCI president N Srinivasan on Thursday refused to talk about the issue of Deccan Chargers (DC) as it was sub-judice, but said that the Board can advertise for a new team to be added to the IPL. “I can’t comment on the matter (of DC) as it is currently sub-judice. I’m informed that the court may issue an order soon,” Srinivasan said. “But as far as the Board is concerned, it is at liberty to advertise for another franchise. But that’s a decision to be taken. If we have to go with nine teams, so be it.” The Bombay High Court appointed retired Supreme Court Judge C K Thakkar as arbitrator to resolve the dispute between BCCI and Deccan Chronicles Holdings Ltd over the Board’s termination of DC from IPL.
