Old City girl gets her ‘lover’ arrested on charges that he sexually exploited her promising marriage. While he denies it, she still wants to marry him. MOHD SUBHAN

T
here is this saying that ‘love is blind’ and at times we see that it is blind to reason. A recent example of this is an incident where a girl, Sandhya Rani, lodged a complaint against her ‘boyfriend’ of several years Satish kumar alias Rajnikanth, alleging that he sexually exploited her promising marriage but later went back on his word. Based on Sandhya’s complaint, the police arrested Rajnikanth on the charges of Section 420 and 376 of IPC (cheating and sexual harassment) and he is jail awaiting trial. Though the lover boy is cooling his heels in jail, Sandhya is still optimistic about winning his heart. She said that she is still ready to marry him and if that does not fructify, she will
end her life. Two days back, when she went to file the complaint against Rajnikanth before inspector of Kalapathar Khaja Moinuddin, a furious Sandhya warned of dire consequences if Rajnikanth refuses to marry her. She had attempted suicide about 10 days back by consuming phenyl but was rescued by doctors. On the other hand Rajnikanth rubbishes her allegations. He says that he was never in love with her nor had he ever promised her marriage as she was not good looking enough for his taste. “I would rather die but I will never marry her,” he says. With threats of suicides in the air from both sides, inspector Moinuddin, in the presence of Sandhya’s uncle Ramesh, tried counselling Rajnikanth to consent for marriage. However, he remained adamant in his stand. Ramesh is financially sound and has offered one car and `1015 lakh in dowry to Satish if he agrees to marry Sandhya. He

he State Board of Intermediate Education, handling the Intermediate examinations was mobbed by parents and students with many grievances and clarifications. In light of the recent initiative by the government to extend the deadline and schedule of second year examinations, many students and parents who were present at the Vidyabhavan, were distressed by the Board’s appalling state of functioning. Distressed students were seen running from pillar to post with many problems relating to paper work, a common sight at the Board. V Satya Prakash, a final year intermediate student whose exam score was lesser than what he anticipated said, “I have been wandering through the offices for four hours. When I approached the examina-
tions department, they asked me to come back later. Even now, nobody has bothered to tell me how to go about the procedure of re-evaluating my answer sheet.” The functioning of the Board adds to the woes of the students who wish to apply for entrance examinations for graduation. Bhavana Reddy, a final year student, said, “ I need a copy of my intermediate memorandum for applications. I was redirected to this place by my college authorities and now that the supplementary dates have been rescheduled, I will have to wait till their results are out and then obtain my memorandum.” P Raja, a student from Nizamabad said, “My certificates were lost at my college last year. Now, after filing an FIR with the police and all the necessary identity proof, I am yet to receive my certificates. The concerned officials are yet
to give me a final date as to when I will receive my certificates.” Parents from rural areas, who are not used to the myriad ways of the City government offices, complain that nobody is interested in solving their problems. Satyanarayana, a farmer, says, “ My daughter’s certificates have not been issued since two years. People in the Board either ask me to wait for a few hours or ask me to come back again a week later. Even then, nothing is ever done.” Completing the picture is the presence of touts and brokers who hang around the Vidyabhavan promising a “short cut” for all paperwork, including modifying results. For a hefty amount, a student can be ‘passed’ in any paper of his choice. Not surprisingly, the office telephone number of the Vidyabhavan is never answered, indicating a lax attitude.
says that her family wants to see her happy as she is the only daughter. He buttresses his offer pointing out that Sandhya, who is in the final year of her graduation, is well-qualified compared to Rajnikanth. Sandhya, 23, hails from Old City’s Narsareddy Colony and her father Laxminarayana runs a footwear business. They belong to a cobbler family. Rajnikanth, who is a relative of Sandhya, is from Siddipet in Medak. He is uneducated and unemployed. He used to come her house frequently during the last four years. According to her, they fell in love and went out on dates. Sandhya alleges that Rajnikanth promised to marry her and used to have sex with her. However, when he started ignoring her and did not give clear answer on fulfilling his promise she lodged a police complaint. She produced several photos of them, in happier times, to back her allegations. The police registered a case and arrested Rajnikanth. The court remanded him to custody.

Miles to go before we pass City AIEEE applicants have to undergo the travails of a 125 km journey to Warangal and inadequate lodging facilities there as there is no centre in the State capital for the offline test. N SHIVA KUMAR

W
ith AIEEE introducing online examination, many thought this was a good blend of technology and a new hope to higher education system in the country. As much as it bridges the digital divide, it has its share of side effects and students are facing the heat of this new move in Andhra Pradesh. The AIEEE examination has both online and offline exam options. Despite having online option most students have choose to take the test offline due to various reasons. However, this year too Hyderabad has not been allocated as a centre to write the offline test. Students from Hyderabad who wish to write the test offline have to travel to Warangal, Tirupathi or Guntur. This year about 11 lakh students are expected to appear for the examination for 35,000 seats across the country and about 70,000 applicants are from AP. Lack of an offline centre in state capital has become a big burden for parents. Most of them travelled a day in advance as exams starts at 9am and candidates have to report half an hour early. “It’s a burden for parents and children. They have so many entrance exams this month and not having a centre in Hyderabad is very stressful, both financially and mentally. Thankfully, we had book our hotel room in advance,” says Krishnaveni A, parent. Most students from Hyderabad have got Warangal, which is 125 km from the City, as their centre . However, being a small town, it does not have many hotels or lodges. Parents had a tough time arranging accommodation and book train and bus tickets. The eastern railways have
arranged special trains but in AP no such arrangements have been made by the government. Most parents and students went days in advance to avoid taking any risk.

is not fair. Despite having relatives in Warangal we have travelled a day in advance. When there are so many students travelling from Hyderabad I fail to understand why don’t they have a centre in Hyderabad,” laments Subramaniam Sharma, a parent. AIEEE is regarded as the gateway to 30 national institutes of technology (NITs) besides five Indian institutes of information technology (IIITs), Central- and state-funded institutions and self-financed deemed universities and other institutions. The number of applicants for the AIEEE has increased by around 50,000 when compared to last year. One of the primary reasons for this is that this year many other institutions are expected to admit students
through AIEEE. A decision in this regard will be taken by the CCB, which will be constituted by HRD ministry, and a list of tentative institutions joining the CCB will be placed on the website. Surprisingly, a few student have not informed their parents about the centre with the fear that they may not send them so far to write the test. “My dream is to get into one of the national level engineering college. I left in the morning to Warangal, but my parents don’t know about it. Only my elder brother knows that I am here. The only reason why I did not inform my parents is because they will get tense and will constantly keep thinking about my stay and food,” said Manoj C, student.

Most students are apprehensive about the new method and choose the conventional way of taking the test. “I spoke to my seniors all suggested that I opt for an offline test. My dream is to get into one of the NITs, therefore, I do not want to take a risk of online test,” said Vamsi Reddy, a student Colleges across the state train students to write the test

Students should be trained right from the beginning to give online tests. These students who fear online tests are the same ones who are experts on Facebook and YouTube. Dance the double dip: Time to party like it’s 2008? Spain and the UK are in recession, and the world is once more in peril. This time, the problem’s Europe and it’s political.
BARRY NEILD
feedback@postnoon.com LONDON: Like a bad movie franchise that refuses to die, Europe’s debt crisis lumbered back into view this week, rehashing weary plot lines of debt and recession while introducing a few new characters fresh for the kill. At the end of the last installment, it looked like the debt-stricken euro zone was over the worst of it. The European Central Bank had come galloping to the rescue with a massive injection of cash into the banking system. And a disorderly Greek default had been averted. But the latest sequel finds Europe once more in peril. This time, the crisis has evolved into a political mess. On Monday, markets dropped in response to political uncertainty in France and the Netherlands. Elsewhere, new data showed Spain slumping back into recession, piling on the downward pressure. Shares rallied again by mid-
If one of the core countries is in breach of that fiscal compact before it comes into force, then there’s very little credibility about it Elisabeth Afseth, Investec analyst week. But by then, an urgent new debate had broken out. Were Germany’s austerity measures really preferable to growthboosting policies? That argument could swing upcoming votes not only in France, but also Greece and the Netherlands. It could also determine the future of weaker economies such as Portugal, Spain and Italy — all teetering on the brink of bailouts. A surge in right-wing votes on Sunday left France’s first-round presidential election wide open, raising the
prospect of victory for Socialist candidate Francois Hollande over incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy. Defeat for Sarkozy would mean an end to the already endangered “Merkozy” — the French president’s (now-ailing) partnership with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, which has imposed tough austerity on countries requesting bailouts from the EU and the International Monetary Fund. If he wins, Hollande has promised an economic Uturn, introducing growth-oriented policies and a redraft of last year’s so-called fiscal compact forging greater European political and economic integration. The Netherlands is also rife with political uncertainty, following the collapse of the government after austerity talks failed. Caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte has appealed for help to make deep budget cuts, but there are fears the country will remain in limbo for months. The upheaval came as international ratings agency Fitch, which has previously threatened to downgrade the Netherlands’ triple-A credit score unless it reined in its finances, predicted that the country would miss next week’s EU deadline of cutting its budget deficit to 3 per cent of GDP. Such turmoil in what was once considered a euro zone safe haven isn’t provoking too much alarm, said Investec analyst Elisabeth Afseth, but she said it does raise further questions about the integrity of the euro zone and the wider austerity policy. “If one of the core countries is in breach of that fiscal compact before it comes into force, then there’s very little credibility about it,” she told GlobalPost. “Perhaps it’s not the right solution to begin with. If it’s not even adhered to by the strong countries, there’s little chance that anyone else will stick with it.” There was more gloomy news from the fringes of Europe, when the UK unexpectedly announced a return to recession — its first “double dip” since the 1970s — but this was largely eclipsed by even worse economic data from Spain. With a recession yanking the rug out from under Spain’s efforts to cut its deficit, the International Monetary Fund
warned that the government may have to bail out its vulnerable banking sector to the tune of billions of dollars as bad loans climbed to the highest levels in 20 years. Spain’s woes are likely to reverberate around the continent in a constrained echo of the crisis that began three years ago in Greece, another country where severe and deeply unpopular austerity measures are yet to yield positive results. It was therefore little surprise that economic sentiment in the euro area dropped sharply in April. This, said SocGen chief UK economist Brian Hilliard, was a “strong message” that a recovery in spending was still a distant prospect and a deepening recession was on its way. “Signs of bottoming out observed between December and March are over, as is the hope that spending would recover once sovereign tensions ease,” he said.
As resistance to austerity gathers pace, Germany’s Merkel appears to be increasingly isolated. She tacitly acknowledged this by launching a defense of her policy in Berlin this week. “We’re not saying that saving solves all problems,” she said. “[But] you can’t spend more than you take in.” But with Merkozy likely to be torn asunder, Afseth said there was a possibility the alliance could be replaced by a new “growth compact,” involving the likes of Hollande. This, she said, could break the uncertainty of current policies. “I’m not entirely sure this is such a bad thing as austerity on its own is not working,” she said. However, she acknowledged that even this may not offer the long-term solutions many would hope for, meaning that further bailouts could be down the line. So, stand by for another sequel.

UIDAI probes misuse cases NEW DELHI: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is probing several complaints of misuse of personal data and duplication of cards while issuing ‘Aadhaar’ numbers. “UIDAI received six complaints regarding errors or complaints regarding use of address documents. Four were received on UIDAI helpline and two by emails,” it said in reply to an RTI query.
DoP to set up 1k ATMs NEW DELHI: The Department of Post plans to set up 1,000 automated teller machines (ATMs) across the country under its modernisation plan, Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot has said. “The Department of Post (DoP) proposes to set up 1,000 ATMs and 820 head offices have been identified for setting up these ATMs. The remaining 180 post offices will be identified during the implementation phase,” Pilot informed Parliament last week. The head offices chosen for setting up ATMs covers all the states, with Andhra Pradesh leading the tally at 100 ATMs, followed by Tamil Nadu (92) and Uttar Pradesh (73). As many as 61 ATMs would be set up in Maharashtra, 60 ATMs in Karnataka, 51 ATMs each in Kerala and Rajasthan. Pilot said the DoP has computerised 24,969 post offices as part of the modernisation drive. DoP has selected five major technology companies for five of its technology advancement projects. It has issued Letter of Intent to Infosys for two projects which are Rural System and Financial Services Integration, Tata Consultancy Services for Change Management, Sify for Network Integration and Reliance Communications Infrastructure for Data Centre. DoP has got approval of `1,877.20 crore to be spent across these projects over a period of two years and will seek additional funds when the need arises. The DoP plans to computerise all its 1.55 lakh post offices across the country by 2013. PTI

2,200 mobile towers to check Naxal menace VIJAY SHENDE
NEW DELHI: Concerned over poor telephone connectivity in remote Naxal-affected areas, the government is planning to install 2,200 mobile towers in nine Maoisthit states by the end of this year. Following a request by the Home Ministry, the Department of Telecommunication has roped in the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited to carry out the ambitious project to strengthen the mobile telephone network by setting up the towers in remote inaccessible areas where Maoists have a strong presence. The towers will be set up in consultations with the state governments near establishments of security forces, police stations or other secured locations as the Naxals have often been targeting such towers in the past. The proposal will be submitted before the Union Cabinet soon and once it gets approval, work will start immediately, official sources said. The cost of construction of each tower would be in the range of `10 to 12 lakh and funds will be provided from the Universal Service Obligation Fund, a corpus being created by the government through raising the Universal Access Levy (UAL). The purpose of levying the tax is to provide telecom services in rural and remote areas as these areas generate lower revenue due to lower population density, low income and lack of commercial activity. The states that will benefit from the project include Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal and Maharashtra, they said. The idea was mooted after receiving complaints of poor mobile connectivity from security forces and people engaged in development projects in these states. More than 200 mobile towers were blown up in the last four years in the nine states by Naxals who claim that police were being tipped off about their movements and locations by informers through mobile phones. Naxal violence has been reported
in areas falling under 270 police stations in 64 districts across India. The level of violence in Left Wing Extremism affected states is still unacceptably high with 447 civilians and 142 security personnel killed in 2011. The Central government has shouldered its share of responsibility in dealing with the Maoists and has deployed 90 battalions (around 90,000 personnel) of paramilitary forces. The budget allocation under Security Related Expenditure scheme has been increased to `337 crore in 2011-12 as against only `80 crore in 2008-09. The government is also implementing an ambitious Integrated Action Plan in 78
selected tribal and backward Maoist-affected districts since 2010. Various development schemes like construction of roads, bridges, school buildings, providing drinking water facilities to rural population, besides sanitation and electric works, are being carried out through it. The government sanctioned `25 crore in 2010-11 and `30 crore in 2011-12 to each of these districts through which 63,416 projects were set up and 26,593 projects completed, incurring an expenditure of `1,391 crore till 2011. The funds for the project are placed at the disposal of a committee headed by the district collector to oversee its PTI implementation.
Fire threat looms over hospital NEW DELHI: An inferno may be in the making in governmentrun Ram Manohar Lohia hospital that caters to over 7,000 patients a day as it has not been able to “correct” 16 fire-prone areas inside its premises. Pointing to the loopholes, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) had written to the hospital in
December 2011 that the “perusal of the fire and life safety aspects in the hospital is alarming” and gave them 90 days time to correct themselves. However, the hospital could not meet the deadline and has asked “some more time up to the end of May 2012” to complete the work of upgrading of fire fight-
ing and fire alarm system at various locations of the hospital, Mumbai-based Ajay Marathe said from a reply from DFS he had received to his RTI query. “The approach to the hospital has been blocked, escape routes blocked/locked in all the high rise blocks, sprinkler system, smoke management system
and public addressing system out of order and the basement found full of waste materials,” according to the inspection of the Delhi Fire Services. Fire extinguishers were found empty at some places, hose reel found defective/missing, Manually Operated Electrical Fire Alarm System in all
blocks was out of order/ removed, Compartmenting removed/ not provided, no trained manpower available in the hospital and exit signs found removed. In a statement to the RML administration, AK Sharma, DFS director said, “In most cases systems have been providPTI ed but are not functional.”

DAMASCUS: Deadly clashes broke out between deserters and Syrian government forces on Saturday as a veteran Norwegian peacekeeper headed to Damascus to take charge of a UN mission overseeing a troubled truce. Regime troops killed at least 10 rebel fighters in the Damascus region, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Separately, the official SANA news agency reported three soldiers and two “terrorists” killed in Aleppo, northern Syria, in clashes between troops and “armed terrorist groups.” An activist said the fighting began as “officers and soldiers of a military base near the presidential palace... deserted with their weapons.” And in what was believed to be the first case of Westerners going missing in the violence-swept country, Budapest said two Hungarians had been kidnapped. A putative truce, which technically came into effect on April 12, has taken a daily battering, and the European Union on Friday expressed extreme concern about the persistent bloodshed. The Observatory said four civilians were also killed by security forces on Saturday, two in Damascus province and two in Idlib province in the northwest. The latest security-related incidents came as Major General Robert Mood was en route for Syria to take the helm of a fledgling mon-

Ahmad Fawzi told AFP in Geneva. Saturday’s violence came the day after a suicide car bombing in Damascus that the Observatory said killed two and Syria’s state media said 11. Ten civilians were among 19 people killed in renewed bloodshed on Friday, more than two weeks into a promised ceasefire, the watchdog said. After the Damascus blast, SANA quoted the interior ministry as saying “it will not tolerate the armed terrorist groups and vowed to strike with an iron fist those who are terrorising citizens.” The opposition blamed government forces for the bombing and
demanded an international inquiry. “The Syrian National Council condemns this criminal act which is aimed at further undermining the security and stability of our country and at terrorising our people,” a statement said. Meanwhile, the official Syrian press accused UN chief Ban of encouraging “terrorists,” the regime term for anti-regime fighters, and Damascus ally Russia said “terrorist groups” needed a “decisive rebuff.” Moscow’s statement, which insisted that world powers prevent support from reaching the rebels, came after Lebanon said it had intercepted three containers of weapons destined for rebel forces on a ship originating in Libya. A Lebanese official said the containers held heavy machineguns, artillery shells, rockets, rocket launchers and other explosives. Syrian authorities have repeatedly charged that weapons are being smuggled from Lebanon to rebels. On Saturday, government newspaper Tishrin wrote that Ban “avoids talking about abuses by armed groups and focuses his blame solely on Syria, as usual. He encourages these groups to continue to commit more crimes and terrorist acts.” The Russian foreign ministry said “we are convinced that the terrorists operating in Syria need a decisive rebuff, and that all domestic and outside players need to prevent any support” from reaching AFP the rebel forces.

Overnight Saturday to Sunday, Zeng Jinyan said “people from the police will come to collect anti-viral medicine. His [Hu’s] detention has been extended to 24 hours. And thankfully, we’ve all agreed that families are off-limits,” Obama said, after a period when the two campaigns have feuded over the women’s vote. “Dogs, however, are apparently fair game,” Obama quipped. EDITORIALS FOR GUANGCHENG no turning back The story of the blind Chinese legal activist, Chen Guangcheng, who fled house arrest and is allegedly hiding out in the US embassy in Beijing is swiftly resembling a John le Carre novel. The Americans are in a very sticky situation; already there are reports that Chinese authorities have detained Guangcheng’s family and close supporters. This can only end badly. The US does not have the clout over China it did a few decades ago, also this is happening on Chinese soil. It is increasingly likely that the US will attempt to broker a deal, but the chance of Guangcheng being spirited away in the dead of night by US officials is nil. Any attempt to take him out of the country will force a disproportionate response from China, and the hit will come economically rather than militarily. The US will make deep concessions under the table to China in order to make sure there is a semblance of face left when they eventually turn Guangcheng over. But the Rubicon has been crossed, whether the US backs down, which it has to, and delivers Guangcheng to the Chinese or hopes some sort of international intervention comes about is unclear. What is clear, however, is that Guangcheng’s family will bear the brunt of his actions.

Are women meted unfair treatment? From the Hip SYED SHOAIB
I
n the World Congress of Cardiology in Dubai last week, Prof Sidney C Smith president of World Heart Federation said that women with Acute Coronary Syndrome the world over are not getting the same treatment as men. In fact, women with ACS receive inferior treatment. They also reach hospitals later, are older and because of less-aggressive treatment have worse outcomes than men. This is truer for women in India, agrees Dr Ramakant Panda chief of Asian Heart Institute. This, we may read, as gender bias even when it comes to heart health of women. True, women do neglect their health in their preoccupation with their household chores leading to a lack of physical exercise, poor nutrition
and excessive stress. Compounded with the stress and strains within the family, they are prone to sickness and are generally in a condition of less than peak health. It is also discovered that women are the sick gender, meaning that they are more prone to disease and have more events of illness than men. All this is more than complicated in the case of Indian women; somehow she has come to be the martyr of the family. She will ensure immediate attention to other members of the family but won’t even express her discomfort when the illness and its extent in both cases is the same. Consequences of this sacrifice get pronounced when subtle diseases hound. In case of heart-related diseases, the awareness itself is so less and as Dr Salim Yusuf (McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario) pointed out, the absence of a system in India for managing patients who get heart attacks delays implementation of effective therapies. The CREATE registry study
in India concludes that fewer women are admitted to hospitals with ACS. That women are also being neglected in hospitals and receive inferior treatment seems to be a rather alarming disclosure. Unequal treatment of women for heart ailments at home can be because of a general disregard for women’s health in the Indian social setup; but the accusation that the same treatment is meted out to them by even doctors may perhaps be a gross exaggeration of a flaw in standard procedure. It is a proven fact that female hormones have a protective action on the heart and so females are not regularly screened for heart ailments. But after menopause when they are no longer protected by hormones, women are as susceptible as or more so than men. There maybe those rare cases in whom the disease may have set in much earlier but diagnosed very late leading to bad prognosis, higher morbidity and mortality. And as to inferior
or less-aggressive treatment, the treating physician’s mindset is that he is only supplementing the natural protective mechanisms and does not need to establish a completely new protective setup as it is thought required for men. The advantage of the declaration by Prof Smith may have brought centre stage the fact that disease incidence trends may be fast changing and, preconceived notions must not compromise the quality of health care particularly so where women are concerned. Wellbeing of patients must not be compromised because of generalised opinions. In the light of the increasing incidence of such cases clinical approaches must be suitably upgraded to better handle such cases. Chronic cardiological pathology must not be overlooked in women and all women must be screened for heart ailments irrespective of age. The writer works for Postnoon.

Storm clouds gather over Indian economy AFP /INDRANIL MUKHERJEE

ndia’s economic star is fading fast as a spluttering economy and reform paralysis put the country’s prized investmentgrade rating at risk and spook foreign investors. The latest bad news came on Wednesday when Standard & Poor’s cut India’s credit outlook to negative, saying the nation’s investment grade rating faced a one-in-three chance of being downgraded to junk. It isolated “political gridlock” as a key factor behind the warning. But with Premier Manmohan Singh’s unruly coalition hobbled by graft scandals and infighting, analysts are deeply sceptical the Congress-led government can set the economy to rights. Nobody should “hold their breath for a born-again government,” said Rajeev Malik, economist at CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets. “Coming from the most conservative of the rating agencies, it’s a wake-up call for the government to do something meaningful soon,” he said of the S&P announcement. But given government “policy paralysis”, the situation “is unlikely to change substantially”, he added. In 2007 S&P raised India’s credit rating to BBB-, the lowest investment grade, a landmark that allowed the country to tap new sources of capital by clearing the way for global funds to invest in New Delhi’s debt. But now “there’s at least a one-in-three chance we may move the rating down in the next 24 months” if “growth prospects diminish” or reforms remain stalled, said Standard & Poor’s credit analyst Takahira Ogawa. Growth in Asian rival China is also slowing but ratings agencies have kept their outlook on Beijing’s A ratings positive thanks to its strong fiscal position. Investors have been waiting for India to reduce the role of the state, ease red tape on business and open its doors wider to
foreign investment. But elections are due within two years and Kotak Mahindra Bank economist Indranil Pan said that “given the political scenario, any big-ticket reforms will be difficult”. Stubborn inflation is also likely to keep interest rates high, weighing on growth. A sovereign credit downgrade to junk status — which means a higher default risk — would force India to pay higher interest rates on international borrowings and discourage foreign investment urgently needed to upgrade its shabby roads, ports and other infrastructure. Until recently, the country of 1.2 billion people was a musthave in foreign investor portfolios. But interest has waned with
investors jittery about graft and policy U-turns, as well as infrastructure bottlenecks and slowing growth. The economy grew by 6.9 per cent in the last fiscal year, the second slowest pace in a decade, while the fiscal deficit was a record 5.9 per cent of gross

domestic product and the trade deficit was up by 57 per cent. New plans to impose capital gains tax liabilities for foreign firms have also disheartened investors. The new US ambassador to India, Nancy Powell, told a business audience in New Delhi on Friday curbs on foreign investment and other policies had caused “significant concern and dampen sentiment about India’s investment climate”. Ratings agency Moody’s has kept its outlook stable for India. But Moody’s Analytics economist Glenn Levine said the government does not have the “leaders to push through toughminded reforms needed to drive the next wave of growth”. Even before the S&P warn-
ing, foreign portfolio investment was showing a net outflow. Direct investment is also sluggish while traders expect the rupee to hit new lifetime lows against the dollar in coming months. Some see a return to junk status as inevitable. “India has no light on the horizon,” Cyrus Daruwala, managing director at IDC Financial Insights, told CNBC. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee says the government is “confident of overcoming difficulties” and “there is no need for panic”. At the same time, he has repeatedly said he should not be blamed if he is unable to boost the economy, citing “the political situation on the ground”. AFP

Khan along with Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan.
SANA MIRZA
Why did you decide to set it up?
sana.m@postnoon.com
I am a classical dancer and I used to performed 8-9 years ago. That was when I realised that there were not many platforms to perform at. I worked for different event management companies like Wizcraft and Banyan Tree but there was something still missing. I wanted to contribute to various Indian art forms and bridge the gap. I wanted to make Hyderabad 'the' destination for celebrated artists because I personally feel that Hyderabad is a culturally rich city and has the potential to be a visual treat for people.

hat is Cisne for Arts?
Cisne for Arts is an event management company which was set up in 2009. It is dedicated to organising the best art events around the city. Our whole motto is to work with unique concepts. In the past we have organised the Jugalbandi with Jagjit Singh-Gulzar and Abida Parveen- Muzaffar Ali. We have also hosted a concert with Kailash Kher and most recently, The Mystic Chords with Ustad Amjad Ali
Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am a Telugu girl who was born
and brought up in Delhi. I went to school in Dehradun then came back to Delhi for my graduation. I attended Miranda House for my Bachelors and did my Masters in music. I am a trained musician and am a classical dancer.
Who do you think had a major influence on you? All the credit goes to my parents especially my father who encouraged me to see the world by myself. I never stayed at home and I was always out doing summer jobs.
Why the inclination towards music? My parents always took my two older brothers and me to various concerts and gigs. I was only five when I first started attending these

If you were not a musician, what would you be doing right now? I most definitely would have been an interior designer. I have a diploma in interior designing which was only second favourite to music. My first job in fact was in a fashion house and worked on two TV shows – Lakme Khoobsurat and the Good Home Show. Working in that firm gave me a lot of exposure and I learnt things the hard way. Therefore, setting up a firm of my

own was not that difficult because I knew the tricks of the trade.
Working as an event manager, how would you rate the experience? I would say that working as an event manager hasn't been easy. If truth be told, events are rather difficult anad aren't as glamourous as they look. Its a huge gamble and its all about convincing corporates. For one of our events, we didn't have a cash sponsor nor were any funds raised but I singlehandedly managed everything.
Would you like to say something to the youngsters? I believe that my passion for music is what drives me so find your passion too.

emolished buildings, piles of bricks, an odd tree and colonial style homes arranged in artistic shapes are the symbols of new age “land art” for a handful of contemporary artists from the West who have made India their muse. Three of them, supported by the Embassy of France and its arms, have captured the everyday heritage of the country, introducing the concept of “land art” to India. Fashion photographer Sebastian Cortes has documented the quaint Indo-French cultural landscape of Puducherry in his project, “Pondicherry”, a series of photographs and a book, which will open April 30. Cortes, who worked between Milan and New York, settled in Auroville in Puducherry 10
years ago with his yoga instructor wife. The “obscure rituals” at the Aurobindo ashram, the “ordinariness of life and the colonial past” - as Cortes says acquire a strange rhythm in the carefully planned frames of “French-style villas, an old pier, Aurobindo’s shrine, the town’s

political history sprinkled with French symbols from another era, Hindu icons, people and the sea”. The artist says the mixture of legacies is what India is all about with “plastic chairs being the new art icon”. The urban landscape of India is fast changing. In 10 years’ time, Delhi might touch Jaipur crafting new land art symbols like high-rise archaeology and urban ruins, says French land artist and archaeologist Alex Boucher, who manages a design boutique, “Pruriel Design” in the capital. Boucher has enhanced the canvas of one of his land art projects, “Little Temples to the Road”, which he began in France in 1995 to document the disappearing little old landmarks like “small kiosks, street-
side garages and the craftspeople” from Paris. He plays with the theme of demolition, construction and the accumulation of neoruins of buildings, which he describes as the “archaeology of time”. Artist Delphine Gibley Ghai of French origin, who unveiled her built art project, "Open" in the capital Thursday, has mapped the land art of India and its South Asian neighbours in striking photographs. History cites that the land art movement began in October 1968 with the group exhibition, “Earth Works” in New York. The genre, coined by artist Robert Smithson was practised by leading post-modern artists like Andy Goldsworthy, Hans Haacke, Alan Sonfist and IANS Constantin Brancusi.

here were major revolutions and breakthroughs in the field of art in the early 20th century. The whole world was in awe of the work of artists who drifted from the traditional style of art. In Netherlands too, art was trending. There was the rise of an art movement called De Stijl which
meant ‘The Style’ also known as neoplasticism that was founded by the painter and architect Theo van Doesburg in Leiden in 1917. This form of art used the talents of artists to design buildings, homes and furniture. A magazine called De Stijl was published between 1917 and 1932 which carried the works of the movement to an international readership. In this form of art they simplified visual composi-
tions to vertical and horizontal directions and used only primary colours along with black and white. The De Stijl influence on architecture remained considerable long after 1931 and Mies van der Rohe was among the most important proponents of its ideas. Works by De Stijl members are scattered across the world, but De Stijl-themed exhibitions are organised regularly.
ART FOR DUMMIES Museums with large De Stijl collections include the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague and the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum. Other famous members of De Stijl form of art are: Piet Mondrian, Georges Vantongerloo, Mies van dr Rohe and Jean Arp.

very summer it’s the same old story—no water for domestic consumption. This is the time when the entire city is engaged in the water wars. But here’s the thing, while most of us were engaged in these wars, a few enthusiastic Hyderabadis decided to take matters into their own hands. They decided to use rain water harvesting to end their water problems. “When I look at my neighbouring colonies, I feel very happy that it’s not the same case with mine, and my investment was totally worth it,” says a happy O Sandhya Rani when asked about the water supply in her area. Sandhya, who is a resident of the Second Bazar area, Secunderabad is very happy with the rainwater harvesting plant she set up seven years ago. “Many people criticised me for this move, but I was determined to set it up at any cost and ended up doing it.” On being asked about the cost incurred and the effect of the plant, she said, “I had spent
about `4,500 then. It included running a pipeline from the top of my building to the ground floor into the filtering pit and also the components of the pit. The first year, there wasn’t much of a difference, but the next year showed some promise and the rainwater, which usually ended in the drains was now going back to the ground. People around saw the difference and got one installed at their place as well. I was happy to do my bit. We hardly face any water problem now.” R Gopalakrishna, a resident of Shantinagar went one step further. He installed the entire set up for 10 flats. This ensured that the entire apartment complex had water all through the summer. “I paid `6,000 and now I’m getting its worth. The recharge pit has done a great job in the past years and the water levels has improved drastically too,” he said. According to government rules in Hyderabad, rainwater harvesting has been made mandatory in all new buildings with an area of 300 sq m or more. The tentative date for enforcing this rule was June 2001. But, like every other government rule, even this has just been implemented only on paper. In fact, a regular at the state secretariat tells us about the sad
Here are a few tips on how and what we could do at home to do our bit n First thing you want to do is invest and make a rainwater harvesting pit. n Use a bucket instead of a shower daily. It helps you save 150-200 litres of water per household. n Most of us keep the tap turned on while brushing. Avoiding this can help you save approximately 200 litres of water every month. n For housewives who wash the vegetables in direct
tap water, prefer doing it in a pan. n Use the washing machine only when it is full to capacity. This will not only help you save water, but also electricity. n Water the plants in the night as this helps the soil to retain water for a longer period of time. n Stop wasting buckets of water and washing the roads in the name of traditions like ‘Vakili’.
state of affairs there, rainwater harvesting pits are lying there neglected and filled with garbage. Aditya Koppula, the cofounder of the Vridhi Foundation says, “The main reason we are not able to get the pits in every house despite the rules is because the harvest cell has been inactive for a very long time. We do not want to be activists in this matter. Instead we just want to join hands with the government and do everything possible to make the department active.” “The only reason this issue is ignored is that it is not as visible as the child labour on the road. But by the time we realise, it will be too late,” he added. According to official records, the total number of applications that came in for the construction of the rainwater pits since 2005 are 22,864, out of which only 5,261 have been completed till now. This is a clear indication of how the government rules and regulations work. So, if you want a relief from the constant running around for water, initiate some water conservation methods in your complexes or homes and rest assured you will reap the benefits in the near future.

here are quite a few things associated with rock music: hair of the dog; the strange person in your bed; or Buffalo Wings and smokehouse ribs chased down by pitchers of lager. One thing that is not associated with rock is Saag Paneer and Chicken Pakoda. The good folks at Hyderabad’s Hard Rock Café, however, have succumbed to pressure from their local clients demanding more ‘Indianised’ fare and put the Saag and Pakoda on to their new menu. But if you think that this is the end of the Hard Rock culinary experience then you’re as mistaken as George Harrison thinking Clapton’s Layla was not about his wife. While HRC may have added a couple of rather strange dishes to their menu to keep a segment of clients happy, they have added a lot more that should keep all us ageing rockers much happier than a Grand Funk Railroad reunion. Just for the tune up, vegetarians can now try the corn fritters and the Assorted Hummus Platter. Now before you go “Hummus…boring”, there’s a twist. There are three types of
hummus here, the ubiquitous chickpea creation, but also one made from white beans, and another from black beans. Both are unique, and those Black Beans wail like Plant in his pomp. For the chorus of your meal, the rockers have brought smokehouse to the masses; from BBQ’d chicken to ribs, you’ll be knocking on heaven’s door. This is HRC at its best. The more adventurous Peter Gabriel-era Genesis fan must try the Caribbean Black Bean Burger (made from sweet potato). It’s vegetarian and may have an acquired taste, but so does a good malt, and as any selfrespecting musician knows, that’s a taste once acquired, is
banked for life. Certainly the crowning solo in the sandwich section is the pulled chicken sandwich (they also have an oink option). Dripping with BBQ sauce, and ably supported on bass by ranch beans and rhythm by an almostperfect coleslaw, it leads the new menu. Of course if you’re too uptight to get your hands (or your shirt and trousers) messy then try the Stuffed Chicken on Vegetable Spaghetti. Be warned, like a Danzig track, you don’t get what you expect. The spaghetti is in fact sublimely julienned vegetables. The dish looks stunning, a la veggies, and perfectly matches the flurry of flavour. The new menu boasts a huge
selection of local (some faux, some authentic) dishes to cater to those who like a bit of Keralian [sic] Fish Curry and Murgh Makhani with their red Hot Chilli Peppers. But make sure you leave space for the encore, because just when you think the show’s over HRC’s new menu dishes out a Mojito Yoghurt with Fresh Fruit and a White Chocolate Banana Pudding, bit solid efforts, but eclipsed by Tres Leches. This moist Mexican cake with cream and fresh berries is to desserts what Johnny Cash was to red wine…a personification. Whether you agree with some of HRC’s additions to their menu or not, it doesn’t matter.
While the restaurant has gone out of its way to cater to its customers’ requests it has made sure that the ethos of the chain has not been lost, or even diluted. In fact, it has bolstered the experience. So head out there, pull a chilled pint, order the ribs, and sit back and let the greatest music in the world seduce you into a sensory bacchanalia. But if you see one roomali roti being tossed…run! Name: Hard Rock Café Meal for two: `1,000 + taxes Address: GVK One, Road no 1, Banjara Hills

SVSC’s first look on May 31 Shruti in talks for Ram’s film? P
awan Kalyan’s Gabbar Singh is turning out to be a crucial film for Shruti Haasan. So far, she has been a part of two films in Telugu and all she needs is a blockbuster to her credit to consolidate her position in the industry. Although she hasn’t signed any other film, the buzz is that she’s in talks for Ram’s upcoming film to be directed by Santosh Srinivas. Shruti is likely to hear the script after she returns to Hyderabad. Last year, Santosh Srinivas’ Kandireega turned out to be a huge hit. The trio has joined hands once again for another mass entertainer which was recently launched. SS Thaman is going to compose music for this film as well.
T
he first look of Venkatesh, Mahesh Babu starrer Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu is going to be unveiled on May 31, on the eve of Superstar Krishna’s birthday. Srikanth Addala is directing the film and Dil Raju is producing it. Apparently, the first look of Mahesh Babu starrer Dookudu was unveiled on the same day last year and it went on to become a huge hit. So, Dil Raju has reportedly decided to follow the same sentiment. The film was recently shot in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and a major schedule shall begin from next month onwards in Hyderabad. Anjali and Samantha are playing lead roles opposite Venkatesh and Mahesh Babu respectively. Prakash Raj is playing a crucial role in the film. Mickey J Meyer is composing the music of this film which is expected to hit screens in October.
Sharwanand turns producer S
harwanand is all set to turn producer soon. He’s going to produce a new film under his banner Sharvaa Arts. Anish Kuruvilla, who had earlier made Avakai Biryani, is going to direct this film and we hear that Sharwanand is also going to play the lead role in the film. In the past few years, Sharwanand has built a niche for himself by choosing sensible films like Gamyam, Prasthanam and Engeyum Eppodhum, which was later dubbed in Telugu as Journey. Anish Kuruvilla has already begun casting for this film and more details about the entire cast and crew are expected to be announced soon. Praveen Boyina is the editor. This untitled film is expected to hit the floors later this year.

Cee Lo Green to perform at billboard music awards
C
ee Lo Green, the genrebending singer-songwriter and coach on NBC’s The Voice, has been added to the growing list of performers at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. At a press conference held on Friday at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Billboard.com editor M Tye Comer and a pair of Jubilee! Showgirls welcomed Green, who joins Justin Bieber, Carrie Underwood, LMFAO and The Wanted as announced performers at the May 20 telecast, airing live on ABC at 8 pm.
Aguilera called a B**ch D
id Christina Aguilera pull a diva act on The Wanted? That’s what the boy band is saying after they came away from an appearance on The Voice feeling most unwanted by the superstar judge. “She’s a total b----,” band member Tom Parker tells 92.3 Now radio station in New York. “She just sat there and didn’t speak to us. Wouldn’t even look at us.” Bandmate Max George called the songstress “a bit scary” and “quite rude.” But a source who was on set when the band performed last week denies that Aguilera, 31, purposely gave them the cold shoulder. “There was no opportunity for interaction at any point during the show or prior to the show,” the source says. “The first time Christina saw them was when she was already seated in her coach’s chair and they were performing.”
Scarlett Johansson to sit out Iron Man 3
W
hen Scarlett Johansson put on the spandex to play Marvel heroine Black Widow in Iron Man 2, it was immediately clear that the character would become a regular in the Marvel movie universe. She is reprising the role in next week’s highly-anticipated The Avengers. But Johansson won’t be back in Iron Man 3. In an interview alongside a giggly Mark Ruffalo, she told Screenrant she won’t be seen in the threequel, but she would be keen on a Bourne-style solo film featuring the character. The Avengers opens May 4 in the US and is already playing in much of the world.

Rooney Mara scores another gig
I
t looks like Rooney Mara will be headed for the Lone Star State after she leaves Brooklyn. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star has scored her third gig this week as she’s signed on for Texas-set drama, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, according to Deadline. Mara joins Ben Foster and Casey Affleck for the ‘70s-set yarn in which an outlaw escapes from prison and sets out across the Texas countryside to reunite with his wife and the daughter he never met. The film will be written and directed by David Lowery, who made quite a splash with his short film, Pioneers, which won the Grand Jury Award at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival, according to The Playlist. Rooney Mara is now officially booked for at least the rest of the year, as this week alone she replaced Carey Mulligan in Spike Jonze’s latest project and signed on to headline the adaptation of Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn.
Kristen Stewart in sexy, action film
K
risten Stewart will star in Cali, a “sexy action movie with a little bit of comedy mixed in,” which Voltage Productions and New School Media are producing. Michael Diliberti, who penned 30 Minutes or Less, wrote the script with Stewart in mind for the role of Mya. Mya and Chris are lovers who had fled Los Angeles but must return to save Mya’s sister and battle a series of unsavory characters. Stewart is best known for her turn as Bella Swan in the Twilight franchise, but has plenty of experience in the indie world. “She has a great balance between strength and sexiness that is perfect for this character,” Zev Foreman, head of development at Voltage, told TheWrap. Foreman is producing with colleague Craig Flores and Dilberti.
Voltage produced The Hurt Locker, which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar. It has several projects in the works, such as The Company You Keep, which Robert Redford is directing. No director is attached yet. “We want someone who can articulate this poppy L.A. underworld that can really balance the grittiness of the love story and the humour involved,” Foreman said of a prospective director.
Will Ferrell on SNL W ill Ferrell will return to Studio 8H to host the May 12 episode of Saturday Night Live, NBC announced. Usher will make his third appearance as musical guest the same week. Eli Manning is following in his brother’s footsteps again — to Saturday Night Live! Ferrell, who was a cast member from 1995 to 2002 and has hosted twice since leaving the cast, is currently starring in the Spanish-language film Casa de Mi Padre.

But Zack isn’t an ordinary ball hawk, because no one else boasts a collection as impressive as his: more than 5,800 balls, both home runs and fouled balls. The way he goes after balls at matches can be characterised as almost professional.

team of Japanese researchers at Tokyo University have invented a pair of “slimming goggles” that make food look larger to help you eat less and thus lose weight. This latest creation might be a bit hard to swallow, literally, because it makes food look 50% bigger. This supposedly tricks you into eating less and ultimately helps you shed some of that extra weight. Invention of the century!

a Pascualita or Little Pascuala is a bridal mannequin that has “lived” in a store window in Chihuahua, Mexico for the past 75 years. That is quite a long time for a bridal gown shop to retain a mannequin, but then the dummy has a rather strange history behind it. According to an urban legend, La Pascualita isn’t a dummy at all, but the perfectly preserved corpse of the previous owner’s daughter.
ome people will eat anything that moves or even crawls. While the rest of us are wrinkling our noses at them, they’re actually at an advantage, because insects are considered to be very rich in proteins. A group of Dutch insect munchers love their creepy crawly snacks so much they’re releasing a special Insect Cookbook, next week. Their creation is said to be dedicated to promoting insects as a great source of nourishment. It contains some pretty unique recipes like how to add worms to your chocolate muffin mix, or grasshoppers on a mushroom risotto.
wenty-nine-year-old Kenichi Ito, from Tokyo, says he has loved monkeys ever since he was a child. He has always been able to identify with animals, and harboured an ambition to adopt one of their traits. His deep desire has been fulfilled, now that he is actually able to move around quite comfortably on all fours, just like a monkey. It all started one day when he witnessed a monkey running quickly. From that point on, he claims he practiced running like the animal every day, until he became the fastest man on all fours.

Trying to improve my game: Ojha I
n his quest to be in the reckoning for selection in India’s senior team, wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha said he is trying to raise the bar by performing well in every tournament. “I am satisfied with my keeping, I am trying to improve game by game, trying to perform well in every tournament, domestic (tournaments) and that’s all I can do,” Ojha, who plays for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, said ahead of his team’s match against Rajasthan Royals here tomorrow. His exploits for Rajasthan Royals while opening the batting with Graeme Smith in the IPL initially is well remembered, but Ojha could not quite repeat that performance for the Daredevils last year.

he Daredevils from Delhi are having a dream run this IPL . DD is the only team to have won six out of
eight matches and are currently on the top in the points table. Touted as the underdogs at the beginning of the tournament because of their dismal performance in the last edition, Delhi have scripted a different tale — one which would silence their critics. The Daredevils who scored a thumping victory over pretournament favourites Mumbai Indians in their previous clash,
will now take on Rajasthan Royals on home turf. With their current form, Delhi have little to worry about — Virender Sehwag has led from the front while Kevin Pietersen, Ross Taylor and Mahela Jayawardhane’s batting exploits have been a threat to their opponents. The bowlers too have made lasting impressions this season. Morne Morkel continues to hold
on to the purple cap with 17 wickets in his kitty while Shahbaz Nadeem, Ajit Agarkar and Umesh Yadav have struck regularly. Irfan Pathan, whit his all-round skills has proved what he is capable off. However, Rajasthan Royals do not have a similar tale to narrate. The Rahul Dravid led team is placed fifth according to the latest standings. The Royals have lost their last two matches — the first against Chennai Super Kings and the next against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Rajasthan began the tournament on a positive note but failed to continue that performance. They faltered a few times and let go off a few tight matches. RR have players like Dravid, Ajinkya Rahane, Brad Hogg, Kevon Cooper and Owais Shah who can turn the tide in their team’s favour. But whether these players manage to fire their arsenal or not against the Daredevils, remains to be seen.

I
t was a perfect example of the saying “Better late than never”; Deccan Charges finally won a game in the fifth edition of the IPL when they defeated Pune Warriors on Thursday. Though it took time for the victory to come, it did happen and this would certainly silence their critics for a while. Meanwhile, the Bulls are set to play Mumbai Indians today at the latter’s home ground. Mumbai have seen their fortunes fluctuate through-out this season. While they thrashed the Super Kings from Chennai in the inaugural game, they struggled with their form against the Daredevils in their previous match. Skipper Harbhajan Singh,
DC VS MI AT 8PM ON SET MAX had recently said that even he needed to improve his performance and lead from the front. While Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Robin Peterson saw their team sail to safety against Kings XI Punjab, the trio failed to fire against the Daredevils. Meanwhile, the Chargers would hope that they could carry forward their new-found luck and turn the tides in their favour. If DC clinches victory in all their games from now, then it will not be long before they find themselves among the top four AS teams.

Murofushi relishes Olympic challenge TOKYO: , April 28, 2012 (AFP) Japan’s world hammer throw champion Koji Murofushi has said he is thrilled at the chance of competing for a second Olympic gold this year, and may even continue his career until the next Games. “It feels great and thrilling that I can throw in London. My life has never been so full as now,” the 37-year-old told Japanese media in San Jose, California, where he has been preparing for his fourth Olympics. He said that he aimed to compete at the 2013 world championships in Moscow, and held up the prospect of taking part in the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Asked if he would compete in the Games in Brazil, he responded: “I will think about it after London. I think I can make that challenge depending on how I do.” He referred to his father Shigenobu, who earned the nickname the “Iron Man of Asia” after winning the hammer throw gold medal at the Asian Games five times and remaining in competition until the age of 41. The senior Murofushi held Japan’s national record for 23 years until his son broke it. “I have the Iron Man’s blood in my veins. I am following in his footsteps,” said the younger
Murofushi, who won the world title in Daegu, South Korea, last year with a throw of 81.24 metres. Murofushi, now an assistant professor of sports science at Chukyo University in
Nagoya, also has two world championship medals in his collection -- the 2001 silver and the 2003 bronze. He won the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics after he finished second to Adrian
Annus but the Hungarian was disqualified for refusing a doping test. His personal best is 84.86m he recorded in 2003. “If I can constantly throw over 80 metres, I will be close to a medal,” he added.
GB to play football after 41 years

he first match involving a Great Britain men’s team for 41 years will be an Olympic warm-up against Brazil at Middlesbrough on 20 July, the Football Association has confirmed, according to The Guardian. The match will put Stuart Pearce’s side up against one of the favourites for the competition, and will be part of a double-header at the Riverside Stadium, with the Team GB women’s team, coached by Hope Powell, taking on Sweden beforehand. A Great Britain team last played an international in an Olympic qualifier against Bulgaria in 1971, and have not played in an actual Games since 1960. Pearce said: “I’ve learned a great deal about the Olympics since I was given the opportunity to lead this team and I realise just how massive an event it is going to be for the whole of Great Britain. “In world football they don’t come much bigger than Brazil and it should be a terrific occasion for us going into our first match. I think particularly with the Brazilian connections on Teesside it will be a terrific turnout again come July.” Team GB women are competing at their first Olympics and Powell said: “Sweden are a strong side and we want that challenge to be ready for 25 July when the Olympics begins for us.
We want to play the best teams: White
E
arlier this month Team GB met up in London for a training camp and three friendly games against tough opposition. – the PanAmerican champions Argentina, Tunisia, the African champions, and South Korea, the Asian champions. All three have qualified for London 2012, along with eight qualifiers from Europe, where the standard is generally highest. We got off to a really bad start and ended up losing 32-15 to Argentina, which was quite disappointing as we thought we’d be a bit closer to them than that. From our point of view, we didn’t have enough time to prepare. We start playing better when we’ve been together for two or three weeks, and we’d only been together for a few days. We hadn’t really gelled
again as a team. Plus we had our usual injury crisis and we haven’t really got the strength in depth to cope – we had to call up two guys who hadn’t been involved with the international side for 18 months for the training camp such were the problems. Not what you need when you’re preparing to face some of the best sides in the world. The Tunisia game that followed was a real baptism of fire. They came out of the blocks early and we again had a terrible start but the scoreline – 41-15 – doesn’t really reflect our performance. We played so much better against the Tunisians, created a lot more chances, but just couldn’t put it in the back of the net. I don’t know how many times we hit the post and their goalkeepers were in excellent form. So although the scoreline
was disappointing we took a lot of heart from that. Tunisia have got a very good defence so to create that many chances was great. So that was something we took into the game against South
Korea. The Korea game was probably our best performance to date as a team. We again started a bit slowly, but we slipped into gear and ran them very close. The
final score was 25-29 and we probably had opportunities to win the game, but our lack of experience began to show. But we were happy to close the gap – South Korea beat Argentina and they weren’t far away from Tunisia – so on our day we can compete against these teams. And with the buildup leading into the Olympics we’ll be in a better position to give a good account of ourselves. It was a high standard but that’s why we had these teams come and play us. There’s a good chance we’ll come up against them at the Games. There’s no doubt that it’s a big challenge for us in the summer — to hit our target of a topeight finish we’ll probably have to finish above two or even all three of those sides.

At the NMDC Chess Tournament, Sri Kaustubha beat Kavya Srishti to stand second in the Under 11 tournament. For an 11-year-old, he is clear about his game and his favourites. He loves Tahl, disapproves of Anand, enjoys blitz and overall, he loves his sacrifices. “ I like Tahl because I like wild games. I like wild games because I like sacrifices,” he says. Kaustubha's games are inspired mostly by Tahl's unprecedented attack formations. A shy, reserved young lad, he grows expressive in his love for Tahl. “ I like his aggression. ward, aggressive and unprecedented,” he says. Mikhael Tahl was one of the most famous Grand Masters in chess history, prominent for his freestyle and wild methods of playing chess that included deliberate sacrfices. It is hard to find a chess player who does not believe in saving his pieces. Kaustubha is an exception. His games are marked by continous aggression, be it black or white, a tactic that is rare among the chess circles of the city. Although he has not got a FIDE rating yet, he is hopeful especially after this tournament. He has played with seven rated players with a commendable rating performance of 132. And how does he fare academically? His beaming mother Suma, answers, “Academically he is focussed. We make sure his chess indulgences do not interfere with his academics.” Apart from chess, this seventh class student of Hyderabad Public School, Ramanthapur, enjoys reading and playing table tennis among other things. His love for chess is paralleled by his love for english literature. It is children like Kaustubha who teach us how easy it is to be versatile without a garb of sophistication. Not because they wish to, but because they simply are.

Chelsea, Bayern eye overturning bans
LONDON: Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo admitted on Saturday that he could join forces with Bayern Munich in an attempt to get six yellow cards overturned for the Champions League final. Ramires, Branislav
Ivanovic and Raul Meireles will all miss the May 19 final in Munich after being booked in Chelsea’s semifinal second leg at Barcelona. Bayern, meanwhile, lost Holger Badstuber, David Alaba and Luiz Gustavo
after their own semi triumph over Real Madrid. Asked if Chelsea would consider a joint bid with Bayern to get UEFA to change their minds over the bans, Di Matteo said: “If there’s any possibility, we would consider it, of
ne Wenger hit out at Stoke’s booboys after Gunners midfielder Aaron Ramsey was targeted for abuse during his side’s 1-1 draw. Ramsey was jeered throughout at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday, two years after sustaining a horrific double leg fracture on the same ground following a reckless challenge by Ryan Shawcross. Wenger, who was also taunted mercilessly by sections of the Potters support, shrugged off the personal abuse but admitted he was baffled by the vitriol directed at Ramsey. “I don’t think that you can be especially proud to boo Aaron Ramsey because I don’t see what he has done wrong in his behaviour,” Wenger said. “That’s a story where the fans of Stoke stand behind that player (Shawcross) but they shouldn’t go as far as booing Aaron Ramsey. “(The Stoke fans) have a relationship with me but I don’t have one with them. I personally have
enough experience to cope with that. It doesn’t bother me too much.” Wenger however said football authorities must address the issue of abusive fans eventually. “One day football has to face this and tackle that because it’s easy to sit in the stand and insult

course. But I think it would prove very difficult.” Even if both clubs failed in any bid to overturn those bans, Di Matteo called for a rule change next season so an amnesty is introduced after the quarter-final stage.
2012 host city Wroclaw have received a green light for games at their brand-new arena, after resolving last-minute operating problems that forced a temporary closure. “The stadium has been approved for use,” Wroclaw’s mayor Rafal Dutkiewicz said in a statement announcing that building inspectors had given the thumbs up. While the 42,700-capacity Municipal Stadium opened officially last November, hosting a friendly between Poland and Italy, problems with its pitch-spraying system last month forced a shutdown. With the high-profile European championship looming, that was an embarrassment for co-hosts Poland, and the stadium management scrambled to get their house in order. The closure was also a blow to top-flight club Slask Wroclaw, who use the stadium, and were forced to return to their old ground in the city. The official green light means that Slask, who stand third in Poland’s 16-club first division, will be able to play Sunday’s league match against stragglers Belchatow at the new stadium. Workers are currently putting the finishing touches to the area around the stadium, with projects including a bus-park due to be complete within days. On May 11, the running of the stadium is to be handed over formally to European football’s governing body UEFA for the duration of Euro 2012. Wroclaw is one of Poland’s four tournament host cities, along with the capital Warsaw, Poznan in the west, and the Baltic port of Gdansk. During Euro 2012, Wroclaw will see Group A matches between the Czech Republic, Greece, Poland and Russia. Poland’s co-host for the championships -Europe’s largest football showcase -- is neighbouring Ukraine.

people,” Wenger said. “My response is that I ignore what people say. I focus on what I love in my job, I love my job and I am not responsible for the way people behave in the stands. If you want to stop that it’s easy to stop, because you can isolate every face, but I can’t influence it. “The only thing I think sometimes when I go off at the end of the game when people insult you, are angry or hateful, if you could get just a little picture and send it home to you to show your son or your daughter and see if you do it again, if you are proud.” Wenger also dismissed the suggestion that Morrocco international forward Marouane Chamakh will definitely be sold this summer. Chamakh, 28, has struggled to make an impression since joining on a free transfer from Bordeaux in 2010 and has made just one start this season. But Wenger was pleased with the striker’s performance after Chamakh came off the bench at AFP the Britannia Stadium.
