MRP woes frustrate liquor retailers POLITICS

move. He opined that the government has to come up with a policy to increase the profit margins of the retailers before they can enforce the MRP law. “The government should earn their revenue but at the same time the businessmen should earn their returns. They cannot implement the MRP policy just after we have spent a bomb in acquiring shops” he explains. The government should first concentrate on eradicating the smuggling of duty free liquor into the state and adulteration of liquor before they spend their energy on enforcing the MRP policy he said. He suggests that since the business is based on the online model, it would be better if the

he wine dealers in the State are in no mood to obey the diktats of chief minister Kiran kumar Reddy. General Secretary of the Wine Dealers Association, Venkateshwar Rao told Postnoon that it would not be profitable to sell the alcohol at its MRP as they have spent crores to buy liquor shops in auctions when their actual price was only in lakhs. He questioned the excise officials move to implement MRP rate on alcohol during this time of the year and not earlier. He attributes ACB raids for this

government adopts bar coding and fixing the hologram so that the rate appear online, when scanned. Talking about shops being closed for not selling on MRP, Venkateshwar Rao said that they have given writing an agreement that they will not close their shops. He says the only solution for this situation would be increasing the margin of the retailer so that he can make a profit even if he has to sell at MRP. He objected to people referring to them as liquor Mafia, going on the defensive saying that they stick to only open business. He declared that they will not sell alcohol at MRP or even display the MRP rates till a meeting with the CM or Excise minister is convened with the wine dealers

Police complicity in Patolla murder? Mohd Subhan feedback@postnoon.com

I

t was not an ideological war but a land deal to the tune of Rs 30 crore that led to Patolla Goverdhan Reddy’s murder on Tuesday. The ‘confession’ yesterday of four men to a television channel that they had killed Patolla is believed to be a red herring. It is believed that the claim is a ploy to save the real man behind the land deal, who is said to be an influential politician. Patolla was one of the accused in the murder of former minister Paritala Ravi but was acquitted. His wife Vendiya Reddy had told the police that her husband had left home saying he had a land issue to settle and never returned home. She has accused the police of ignoring his complaint after his release that he had a threat to his life. “Police are responsible for my husband’s killing,” she said. She is reported to have told the police that her husband had given clear identities of the men who were after him. It is now believed that the rivalry between Patolla’s former comrade-turned-land dealer Nayeemuddin on land deals could have led to Patolla’s murder. Whereabouts of Nayeem is not known. Patolla, who hails from a rich agriculture family was lately into brokering land disputes which obviously led to violence. He was the founder of the Revolutionary Patriotic tigers which had little to do with patriotism.

n The four men who claimed to have killed Patolla Goverdhan Reddy admitted that the reason behind the gruesome killing was a disputed land deal to the tune of Rs 300 crore. n According to Patolla’s wife, he had reported a threat to his life but the police had ignored it. She claimed that he had revealed the identities of his pursuers to the police.

Suicide at Jubilee Hills Three of a family consumed poison after the police grilled them in a ‘false’ case of theft. The man and his son died, while the woman is battling for her life Mohd Subhan Md Inkeshaf Ahmed

I

and

n a chilling incident, a family of three entered into a suicide pact last night and consumed poison. While the father and son died, the mother, in a grave condition, is struggling for her life at a corporate hospital. Whereabouts of their daughter Usha (3) was not immediately known. Bhaskar Rao (40), a native of Amalapuram in East Godavari district, his wife Vekateshwari (35) and their son Bobby (7) were living in the servant quarters of Dr Sudhakar Prasad in Film Nagar Road No 81, near Ramanaidu studio. Bhaskar was working as a driver for the doctor since 2007. Bobby was studying in class II of St Peter’s High School in Jubilee Hills. Preliminary reports said the tragedy was a sequel to the police interrogation and threats to Bhaskar. The Banjara Hills ACP L Shanker Reddy informed Postnoon today that Bhaskar Rao had committed suicide unable to bear the harassment of Dr Sudhakar Prasad.

“Rao had been telling the doctor for the past two months that he would leave the job. But the doctor did not allow him to do so. In a bid to prevent his leaving the doctor is said to have falsely accused Bhaskar of theft. In his complaint Rao was accused of stealing a diamond ring and a gold chain,” the ACP said. The police took Rao into custody and interrogated him. Unable to bear the police interrogation and humiliation, the Raos had decided to end their lives. Immediately after the incident, Dr Sudhakar Prasad vanished after locking up his home. It was a woman, by the name Laxmi, who used to come to the home for ironing clothes who had noticed the home was locked but the servant quarters was left open. Suspecting foul play, she informed the neighbours and police. A woman in the neighbourhood told Postnoon that the driver was a softspoken and genteel man and she never suspected him to be undergoing trauma. “It’s horrible,” she remarked.

Annapurna Akkineni passes away A

Postnoon News

nnapurna Akkineni, wife of Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), passed away yesterday morning in Hyderabad after a prolonged illness. She was 79 years old. Born in 1933, Annapurna grew up in Denduluru, West Godavari district. Despite initial reluctance from her relatives, she convinced her father Kollipara Venkatanarayana Rao that she wanted to marry ANR when the latter came to her village in 1949. Finally, the duo got married on February 18, 1949 on the same day when the ANR starrer Keelugurram had released. Soon after the marriage, she moved to Chennai along with ANR and had been a great pillar of strength for the entire family ever since. ANR had stated on several occasions that he couldn’t have achieved all the name and fame in his career without the support of his wife Annapurna. On one occasion, she is believed to have told ANR in a lighter vein to not act in mythological films with NTR.

Later, when ANR started his own banner, he named it Annapurna Pictures and finally in 1976, he established Annapurna Studios. She produced several films under the Annapurna Studios banner and several film personalities who have known her remember her as a calm and affectionate woman who always encouraged others. Despite staying away from the limelight, film-

makers and actors like Dasari Narayana Rao, Krishna, Mohan Babu, Balakrishna and family members of ANR have fond memories of her magnanimity. She had been married to ANR for 62 years and for the past few years, she had been battling ill health. Her demise comes as a great shock to the film industry, particularly to the Akkineni family. May her soul rest in peace.

HYDERABAD: Herbalife was one of the first companies to sponsor Saina Nehwal in 2009. The global nutrition company has renewed its contract and will be sponsoring her this year too. “We are extremely happy and proud to continue strengthening our association with Saina. She represents our philosophy and is a perfect blend of a healthy mind and body,” says Dronacharya Chakraborty. Sania who is happy with

EVENT the endorsing the product strongly believes that her performance on court determines the number of sponsors and brands that approach her. “Sponsorship and brands keep encouraging me but next year, I am planning to concentrate only on working hard and playing better. I’ll be endorsing brands but will dedicate very little time on it,” she said. Saina agrees that 2011 was filled with ups and downs with her ankle injuries , due to which she had to skip a some tournaments. She also lost a few tournaments. ropical cyclone ‘Thane’ formed in the Bay of Bengal is moving westward towards southern India. It is has been forecast that the cyclone will hit the southern shoreline early on Friday. Coastal district Nellore of Andhra Pradesh, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu will be the first areas to be impacted with high tidal waves inundating coasts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert, one step below the red alert that is usually reserved for a severe cyclone. Rains are expected in Andhra Pradesh today evening or early

tomorrow. The wind speed will increase gradually from Thursday night and reach anywhere between 95-105 kmph and peak at 120 kmph in AP and TN coasts at the time of landfall. An IMD official predicts heavy

rains in Hyderabad on December 31. In all probability, Cyclone Thane will be playing party pooper at New Year’s eve and subsequent celebrations. A few leading party organisers who are organising open air parties are tracking the movement of

Anna’s cause loses steam POLITICS

Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com

H

is latest campaign against corruption might have kick started with much enthusiasm, but India’s crusader for the Lokpal Bill, Anna Hazare, had to break his three-day fast for health reasons. But his nonviolent movement to curb corruption in the country is at best receiving a muted response in the City when compared to last time. A sense of fatigue seems to have set in amongst his supporters in Hyderabad. Supporters this time have been conspicuous by their absence at Dharna Chowk which was the hub of all the action last time. “I went on day one but none of my friends were at Dharna Chowk. I sent a group

message and even called many of them but nobody turned up. With none of my friends showing up, I stopped going too,” says Kaushik Pranav, a law student. What’s more, this time round Anna seems to have become the butt of all jokes on social networking sites with tweets like “dear Santa. I know I m late, but

can I have one entire week where the word “Anna” or “Anti – corruption does not appear in the newspaper?” doing the rounds. It may be recalled that last time it was college students in the City who where the catalysts for the movement. But this time even they’ve given the movement a miss. “Last time I was at

the Ramlila Maidan but this time I chose not to go. I am not against Anna but I’d rather stay behind the scenes and support the cause. Stopping citizens from adopting corrupt means would be more productive than this,” says Bhaskar Puranam, an IAS officer. For others it is Anna fatigue that is dissuading them. “Too much of anything is bad. For the last one month every day the headlines are only about Anna. We are so bored of it now. I am free but I just did not feel like going to Dharna Chowk,” says Pavan Kumar, a businessman. New Year celebrations also seem to take precedence over the movement. “No matter how much we support Anna, who will go to jail on New Year’s Eve? It’s become very monotonous and boring hence I choose to do something else,” admits Sri Kamlam, an MBA student.

Cyclone Thane and are keeping alternative plans ready. “We have been reviewing the news. If it rains on December 31 we have enough roofed area where we can accommodate our guests. Rain or no rain, the show will go on,” says Varun Reddy, COO, Country Club. However, managers of many other New Year party venues in the City were found to be unaware of the situation and are now making last minute arrangements and looking for alternative plans. “We had no idea about the cyclone. Now we will have to make some arrangements,” says Madhu, Park Hotel which is organising an open air party to usher in the New Year. “We hope Thane will spare Hyderabad,” hoped another organiser of a New Year party. He says the City is usually lucky and he’s banking on it.

Corruption eats into GHMC revenues Md Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: It seems rampant corruption at various levels of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has led to a fall in revenue. The direct impact has been seen on the 2012-13 proposed budget, which shows a sizeable dip in revenue receipt. The budget is likely to be approved once the new mayor and deputy mayor are elected. The corporation budget of `3,300 crore in the current fiscal tumbled to `2,900 crore for the next fiscal. Though officials of the finance wing say the fall in proposed estimates of the budget is due to reduction in income sources, the actual reason seems to be different. Officials of the corporation admit that there are 2000 GHMC cases pending in various courts. Many cases pertain to property tax and illegal constructions. “Corruption charges against many officers of the corporation indeed deteriorated the image of the corporation. It can’t be curbed with just lip service,” said GHMC’s additional commissioner (Administration and Legal) P Sai Kumar. Recently CM Kiran Kumar Reddy had expressed displeasure at some civic leaders who went to canvas for their candidates for deputy mayor position and asked them to first end corruption in the GHMC.

Religious war flares up in Nigeria post bombing

N

igerian Christians will have no other option but to defend themselves if attacks by Islamist militants continue, a coalition of churches has said. The Christian Association of Nigeria said the Boko Haram group had declared war with its recent violence. More than 40 people were killed in attacks on churches across the country on Christmas Day. Since then, some 90,000 people have fled their homes amid clashes between Boko Haram and police in Damaturu. Earlier on Wednesday, six children and an adult were injured when a homemade bomb was thrown into an Islamic school in southern Delta state. A police spokesman said the bomb had been thrown from a moving car - it was not clear who was behind the attack, which has raised fears of retaliatory vigilante strikes. “The consensus is that the Christian community nationwide will be left with no other option

People stand in front of the partially destroyed St Theresa Catholic Church after a bomb blast in Nigeria’s capital Abuja AFP than to respond appropriately if there are any further attacks on our members, churches and property,” said the leader of the Nigerian Christian Association of Nigeria, a group of Pentecostal churches. Ayo Oritsejafor was speaking at the St Theresa Church outside the capital, Abuja, where 35 people died in the Christmas Day bombings, the AFP news agency reported.

He said the attacks were “considered as a declaration of war on Christians and Nigeria as an entity,” and that while he did not want to encourage acts of revenge, “Christians should protect themselves... in any way they can”. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who is a Christian, has held urgent meetings with Muslim and Christian leaders in an attempt to restore calm.

enezuelan President Hugo Chavez has questioned whether the US has developed a secret technology to give cancer to left-wing leaders in Latin

America treated for cancer this year, Mr Chavez was speaking a day after news that Argentina’s president had the disease.Fernando Lugo of Paraguay, Dilma Rousseff of Brazil and her predecessor Lula da Silva have also had cancer. Mr Chavez said this was “very strange” but stressed that he was thinking aloud rather than making “rash accusations”. Mr Chavez noted that US government scientists had infected Guatemalan prisoners with syphilis and other diseases in the 1940s. And he joked that he would now take extra care of the presidents of Bolivia and Ecuador lest they also be diagnosed with cancer.

Book highlights Nixon’s gay liaison with banker WASHINGTON: US President Richard Nixon (1913-94) had a homosexual relationship with banker Charles “Bebe” Rebozo, according to a forthcoming book by a former White House correspondent. Nixon’s Darkest Secrets: The Inside Story of America’s Most Troubled President, by Don Fulsom, casts a different light on Nixon’s well-known friendship with the Florida banker and businessman, the Huffington Post said. The claim jars with Nixon’s reputation for homophobic remarks, HuffPost said.. HuffPost cited a report by Britain’s Daily Mail saying that the FBI had linked Rebozo, who died in 1998, to prominent organized

‘Arab League observers visit was insufficient’ DAMASCUS: More bloodshed was reported as army defectors killed at least four soldiers in the southern province of Daraa, two civilians were shot dead in Homs’ Baba Amro quarter, another in Hama and one during protests in Aleppo province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. Accusations that the regime was trying to hide the facts from the monitors were punctuated by France, which charged the team was not being allowed to see what was happening in Homs as repression continued there. Those concerns were highlighted when Baba Amro residents refused to allow observers in because they were accompanied by an army officer, the Observatory said. The standoff ended when the officer withdrew. The residents asked the monitors to “come and see the wounded people and the parents of the martyrs, and not members of the (ruling) Baath party,” Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.

A protester in the central AFP Syrian city of Homs The monitors also visited Homs’ Bab Sebaa quarter. The veteran Sudanese military intelligence officer said observers would also fan out 50-80 kilometres (30-50 miles) around Damascus. The observers arrived in Syria at the weekend and on Tuesday visited Homs. French foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said “The brevity of their visit did not allow them to understand the reality of the situation in Homs. The observers must be allowed to return without delay to this martyr city, to travel everywhere in it freely and to have the necessary contact with the public.”

n The twist in the tail happened again. Australia scored 74 runs after the fall of the eighth wicket. n India’s captaincy and body language left much to be desired. There seemed to be no urgency in wiping out the Australian tail. n The lack of application by India’s top order was once again evident. They allowed themselves to be dominated by not playing in their normal style. n Australia, unlike India, went with the momentum. The fast bowlers, particularly, James Pattinson, seized the moment and did not relent. They were hostile and fast and were rewarded. n India’s batting problems have surfaced again in this match. Thankfully, the bowling was much better.

Sachin Tendulkar receives a standing ovation as he walks off after he was dismissed by paceman Peter Siddle on the fourth day of the first Test match between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground MELBOURNE: Australia beat India by 122 runs on the fourth day of the first Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday. India, chasing 292 for victory, collapsed to be all out for 169. Australia added 61 runs for their two remaining wickets before they were dismissed for 240 in their second innings. But it was a lead well beyond India's reach and once Sachin Tendulkar fell for 32 in the 27th over their remote chances of winning went with him. Australia's fast bowlers, James Pattinson, Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle, all did the damage reducing India to 81 for six on Tendulkar's dismissal. The victory gave Australia first blood in the four-Test Border-

Gavaskar Trophy series with the second Test beginning in Sydney on Tuesday. India, 24 for one at lunch, unravelled in the middle session with five wickets tumbling for 93 runs. Gautam Gambhir fell to a fired-up Siddle, edging to the safe hands of Ricky Ponting at second slip for 13. Rahul Dravid was bowled for the second time in the match with a pearler from Pattinson that crashed into his middle-stump for 10 to leave India 58 for three in the 19th over. V.V.S. Laxman was out cheaply again flicking Pattinson to Ed Cowan at square leg for just one after scoring two in the first innings.

Virat Kohli was out first ball, leg before wicket to Hilfenhaus with Tendulkar fast running out of batting partners. But Tendulkar was next to go, slicing Siddle to Hussey in the gully for 32. With his departure India's chances darkened considerably, silencing the "Swarmy Army" India supporters and prompting many to leave the ground. Tendulkar now takes his quest for his 100th international century to next week's second Test in Sydney. India lost opener Virender Sehwag before lunch, caught brilliantly by Hussey above his head in the gully off Hilfenhaus for four. History was against India to bring off victory as they faced up

to the highest fourth-innings run chase in almost 60 years at the MCG. South Africa were the last team to achieve a higher fourth-innings target of 297 for four in beating Australia at the cavernous Melbourne ground in 1953. India struggled to mop up the Australian second innings with the home team adding 61 runs for their last two wickets off 16.3 overs to exasperate the tourists' bowlers. Yet again no batsman has reached a century in the low-scoring Melbourne Test after Hussey was dismissed for 89. Pattinson remained unbeaten on 37 not out as he put on 43 runs for the last wicket before Hilfenhaus was the last man out for 14. AFP

oe Ledley grabbed the only goal of the game as Celtic leapfrogged Rangers to the summit of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League. A second-half header from the Welshman proved to be the difference in the second Old Firm derby of the season, although Rangers may argue an early header from Lee Wallace also crossed the line when the match was deadlocked. The Scottish champions were 15 points clear of Celtic in early November but now find themselves heading into 2012 trailing by two points in the title race. In the seventh minute Wallace's header at the back post from an Sone Aluko cross looked like it may have crossed the line before Fraser Forster forced it back onto the post. The conditions continued to dominate the game but in the 24th minute, after Aluko's corner from the left had been headed goalwards by striker Nikica Jelavic, Rangers defender Carlos Bocanegra inadvertently helped the ball over the bar from two yards. However, the Hoops had the best of the possession and in the 35th minute striker Gary Hooper took a Samaras knock-down, turned and forced McGregor into another save before James Forrest blazed an angled drive over the bar following a corner. The games people play

Celtic withers in Heat MIAMI: LeBron James scored 26 points, Dwyane Wade added 24 and rookie Norris Cole’s 14 fourth-quarter points helped Miami hold off Boston’s late challenge in a 115-107 NBA victory on Tuesday. The star-studded Heat dominated most of the contest, leading by as many as 20 points before the determined Celtics twice narrowed the deficit to three points in the closing minutes. Cole, playing his second NBA contest, helped make the difference as he delivered 14 of his 20 points in the final period — the reserve point guard earning chants of “MVP” from the Miami crowd. Cole also took a charge from Boston’s imposing Brandon Bass with 3:15 remaining. Sprawled on the court, Cole was clearly delighted as the foul was called on Bass. Chris Bosh added 18

points for Miami, who opened the lockout-shortened season with a victory over Dallas on Christmas Day in a rematch of the NBA championship series won by the Mavericks last season. Ray Allen scored 28 points for the Celtics, who were again without Paul Pierce. Pierce bruised a heel in the team’s first practice at training camp and has missed Boston’s first two games — both defeats. Coach Doc Rivers said Pierce would also miss Wednesday’s contest at New Orleans. Rajon Rondo finished with 22 points and 12 assists for Boston, and Keyon Dooling came off the bench and chipped in 13 points. But the Celtics could not overcome the Heat’s aggressive attack and red-hot 56 percent shooting from the field.

SPEED SKATING: South Korea’s short track speed skating star Ahn Hyun-Soo is set to compete for Russia at the Olympics after being granted citizenship by President Dmitry Medvedev, officials said on Wednesday. Medevdev signed a special decree awarding Ahn citizenship, the Kremlin said a statement, in a switch of nationality that had caused anger and dismay in South Korea when it was first mooted this year. “I am very glad that everything has worked out. I have waited for this for a long time,” Ahn said in a statement.

VAIRELLES, KIN TO SPEND NEW YEAR’S EVE IN JAIL FOOTBALL: Former France player Tony Vairelles and three of his brothers will spend the New Year festivities behind bars after an appeals court here rejected their requests to be released on Wednesday. Vairelles and his siblings — Giovan, Jimmy and Fabrice — have been in prison since the end of October after being charged with attempted murder over a shooting at a nightclub. They deny the charges. The four men had made two previous pleas to be freed, both of which were also rejected.

ustralian super-maxi ‘Investec LOYAL’ (R), skippered by Anthony Bell, approaching the finish line to take provisional line honours in the 67th Sydney to Hobart yacht race. First-time Sydney to Hobart winner Investec Loyal celebrated in earnest Thursday after an international racing jury upheld its nailbiting line honours victory over favourite Wild Oats XI. The 100-foot supermaxi was formally crowned winner of the 628-nautical mile bluewater classic after a five-nation jury dismissed a race committee protest that it had received outside assistance. “It’s very relieving to actually get to this point,” said visibly emotional Loyal skipper Anthony Bell after the ruling. “There’s rules in every sport and I suppose, while it wasn’t ideal to have to go through this, I think that ultimately it gets (the result) beyond any question.” The protest, centred on claims that Loyal had gained an unfair advantage by asking a media helicopter crew what sail five-time winner and current race record holder Wild Oats XI was flying, overshadowed the Kurt Arrigo/AFP thrilling race finish.

Editorials CITY COP shows the way

W

e have been hearing unpleasant things about the police these few weeks: two were arrested in a rape case involving a minor girl; and yesterday, a police constable was arrested along with a lawyer for selling opium on the Osmania University campus — incidents which do not make men in khaki very endearing to the public. For a department that has to constantly put up with the stench of the rot within, DCP Manish Kumar Sinha is like fresh air. He could have remained an ordinary cop. By mending discords of hearts joined in marriage, Sinha shows how hearts may be won. His counseling centre, a personal initiative set up at his office that offers service for free, happened when he came to know that counseling centres charge clients exorbitant sums. The police department which is desperate to find ways to win the public’s trust could do well to learn from officers like Sinha.

How the lights went out on Anna Hazare Fusillade Arun Koshy Philip

I

n contrast to the massive support he received for his first two fasts for a strong Lokpal, there are hardly any crowds at Anna Hazare’s fast venue in Mumbai. The parallel fast by his core team in Delhi could barely muster 1,000 people. In Hyderabad it was even worse with hardly 100 showing up. What went wrong with the strategy of the man whose name became synonymous with antigraft movement and inspired people to sport ‘Anna is India’ caps and T shirts? From a flower seller at Dadar station who organised people against thuggery of land sharks to the patriot volunteer to the army in the aftermath of the 1962 war and the eventual metamorphosis into a social activist, Kisan Hazare has come a long way to become the towering beacon of hope for millions who had almost given up on the fight against corruption. However, somewhere down the path the Gandhian deviated from the target and went on a bashing spree on anyone and anything political that fell foul of him — the Congress and its allies emerged as his favourite targets. His core team, whose nom de guerre is Team Anna, was seen manipulating public support for the veteran activist to promote their personal agendas. Theatrics of Kiran ‘çrane’ Bedi may have entertained crowds at Ramlila, but little did the former top cop realise how close she was to the class she was trying to ridicule. If it was the CD controversy that dogged the Bhushans, inflated air travel bills came as a major embarrassment for Bedi. Arvind Kejriwal lost face when he was pulled up by the I-T department over unpaid dues; Santosh Hegde, the man with impressive credentials as Karnataka Lokayukta, pulled out of the team; and Swami Agnivesh was ‘expelled’ for ‘colluding’ with the government. The halo that shined bright once has vanished. With Anna going into overdrive attacking the Congress and even resorting to political

I hope schools that operate without authorisation are dealt with the strictest action. Such schools are responsible for making education a business. Most importantly, it jeopardizes the future of children studying in such schools. Parents who have been cheated and authorities must pursue this issue doggedly and mustn’t rest until the management of schools that have been operating illegally are punished. Kudos for bringing out the good side of our city police. Most of the time we fail to recognise this part of law enforcement for their noble efforts. True, police in the city have earned a bad name due to some recent horrific crimes committed by them but this initiative to mend broken families and save families from breaking up must be applauded. If by their counselling, children’s lives can be saved then it must be encouraged. Children from broken families often tend to take to crime to vent their frustration. We need more officers like him so that the foundation of the society can be made stronger Neeraja Sarkar Gachibowli

campaigning against it in bypolls, the Gandhian was reduced to a Sangh Parivar instrument — something that cost his credibility and popularity dearly. Another factor that Anna and his team underestimated is the public support for the politicians they elected to Parliament. Armtwisting a democratically elected body to satisfy their whims and fancies may fetch an initial round of applause, but will not suffice to ensure constant support. When pundits list the severe winter and holiday season as the reasons for the sparse attendance at the latest fast, they are indirectly acknowledging that the public is willing to give their elected representatives time to sort things out — something that India Against Corruption has overlooked. With all due respect to Hazare and his noble intentions, it remains undisputed that the

movement is destined to collapse from within when one man and his coterie are trying to steamroll all opposition and hold a country with a million divergent voices to ransom through emotional blackmail. The blind opposition to government’s Lokpal Bill without waiting to assess its performance looks more like an ego issue than an argument based in logic. A Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas at state-level, bolstered with extensive legal reforms to plug existing loopholes, are essential for the anti-graft legislation to work effectively. Polity has a way of educating leaders, even the most battle hardened one. Anna has made a wise choice by calling off his fast and jail bharo movement. Anna should show some patience. Isn’t that an inseparable part of the Gandhian approach?

Slow response to Anna

No time for Hazare

The man’s vision and dedication to his cause is indeed worthy of praise but Anna Hazare thinking that people have nothing better to do than join hunger strikes is a little startling. Once the nation had come out in support of his fight against corruption but now after all this drama in the capital regarding the Lokpal Bill and people losing their trust in Team Anna, this call for support is a lost cause.

It is only natural that Hyderabadis have decided to give a miss to Anna movement here. The later half of 2011 has bean really bad for the city with the Telangana strike wasting almost two months and causing untold miseries. This forced everyone to rush through their half year’s schedule in two months. What people want now is to take break and enjoy the holidays and New Year. Now that the Parliament has passed Lokpal the public participation will only go down further.

rgentinian president Cristina Kirchner was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Fortunately for the 58-year-old president the cancer hasn’t spread to her lymph nodes and she will undergo surgery in a week’s time. However, for those of you who gasped in shock or nodded in sympathy for the Argentinian president, there’s news — thyroid cancer is one of the more easy to treat cancers. What’s more there’s no painful rounds of chemotherapy or radiation for the patient to deal with. “Thyroid cancer although not uncommon is still a rare occurrence. Of the 3,000 new cancer patients I see in a year, only about 40 of them present with thyroid cancer,” says Dr Vijay Anand Reddy, senior oncologist and director of Apollo Cancer Hospital. “However, it is one of the more easily treatable forms of cancer. start every year with resolutions of being more considerate and usually, by March am parroting the line, “Resolutions are made to be broken!” Because patients never listen and don’t come for follow ups. It makes me wonder, where we go wrong — both as doctors and patients? Patients need to know n Prescriptions are not family property: But usually once patients have the list of medicines for anything like a cough and cold or sinusitis, it will be re-used, passed around, misused until every known organism is resistant. n Timely investigations help us in diagnosis: The media has bad mouthed doctors so much that patients usually decide when and how many investigations they want to get done and lose health, money and time with all the delay. n Internet information can never substitute clinical opinions: No matter how detailed the signs and symptoms, one cannot treat oneself or diagnose a condition based on a Google search. Some things are best left to the specialists. n Honest second opinions are absolutely acceptable: Instead of cloaking it under “my aunt said” it is reasonable to ask a second doctor about options. Honesty could actually improve the transparency of disease management. n Doctors are human too: And are allowed times of peace and quiet, family time and holidays. Having the cell phone number does not give one the right to use it for silly queries and free consultations. All we need is a little trust, consideration and confidence in each other. Maybe this year I will manage to keep my resolutions – till June. Happy new year! (The writer is a gynaecologist and obstetrician practising at Happy Women Clinic.)

Ten must-haves in your wardrobe

STYLE RULES

A pleasant fragrance

Designer Aneeth Arora, who will be showcasing her collection at the Berlin Fashion Week this January, along with Kallol Datta, lists her rules of style that one should follow when decking up for the New Year bash

FOLLOW YOUR BODY! n Be comfortable - The first and foremost rule is to be comfortable in whatever you wear. You should choose what you wear keeping your comfort in mind and the rest will pretty much fall into place. n Smell good - The entire look will go for a toss if you land up in a party smelling foul and perspiring, so make sure that you wear a good perfume. nMost expensive is not always the best - Keep an open mind and be experimental when it comes to fashion. The most expensive outfit in your wardrobe might not be the best. Learn to mix and match.

nCarry yourself with confidence and style will follow. While comfort is paramount, if that is not teamed with confidence then you will not be fashionable. So make sure to wear your clothes with confidence.

nDon't overdress - Over dressing is one faux pas that most people tend to commit. Steer clear of excess and keep it light. n Underdressing is the trend Underdressing not only keeps you safe but is also the best way to go now since less is more. And while partying all night, it makes sense to be flexible enough to move around.

nAlways remove one accessory from your attire before leaving your house, trust me you will not regret it since there are times when we tend to overdo it.

A pair of good jeans A square silk or cotton scarf

A pair of comfortable yet trendy shoes A cashmere scarf

n Use one accent piece in your ensemble so as to have a clutter-free look and accentuate one thing at a time. n Follow your body not fashion. Dress according to your body type and half the battle is won. n Don't forget to wear a smile when stepping out to party during the New Year, or any other time for it's the best accessory one has. AS TOLD TO TANIYA TALUKDAR

A light jacket to layer A comfortable pair of heels that can be worn with any dress A classic white shirt

A classic little black dress

rom Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg comes another alien invasion fiction. Produced by Spielberg and co-created with Oscar nominated screenwriter Robert Rodat, Falling Skies, US TV's top new drama series of 2011, unleashed an extraterrestrial invasion of apocalyptic proportions as it premiered on AXN on 25th December for Asian audiences. Falling Skies is an epic saga that centres around an all-out invasion of Earth by aliens. The show, however, uses a different tactic and instead of showing the full-scale chaos of the alien attack, cuts to the chase instantly, setting out a grim scenario. Falling Skies begins in a chaotic post-apocalyptic world (and by world we just mean US) which has been completely devastated by an extraterrestrial attack and picks up six months after the carnage, where the remaining few survivors, holed up in the ruins of Boston, come together and form the 2nd Massachusetts, a resistance group. They rummage through debris and raid stores, looking for food and weapons, in a quest to survive, simulta-

neously trying to avoid deadly mechanical attack drones (mechs), under the command of eight-legged spider like aliens (Skitters) who are responsible for the attack. Throughout the episode, the objective of the attack remains unexplained, as the aliens try to round up children between the ages of eight and 16, controlling their mind through biomechanical harnesses fused to their spines which changes them into zombie-like creatures. “I was at school when the ships came,” says Matt Mason (Maxim Knight) to the doctor, in the series opening episode. “They said they wanted to be friends, but they didn't.” With the help of drawings, Matt, who has been deeply traumatised from the experience, recalls how the metal-bodied aliens aboard spaceships had disabled the global electricity supply, quickly wiping out the combined militaries of the world. 90 per cent of the civilians including his mum, were killed in the assault. Falling Skies stars Emmy and Golden Globe-nominee Noah Wyle (as Tom Mason, a Boston history professor who is widowed in the initial attack and has one of his three sons captured by aliens. Determined to safeguard his two

boys and to rescue the other from being transformed into an alien slave, Tom must put his extensive knowledge of military history and strategies to the test, all the while dealing with his commander, the no-nonsense, formerly retired military captain Weaver (Will Patton). But, neither the loss of his wife nor the destruction of his beloved planet seems to dishearten Tom or prevent him from cheerfully with the gorgeous pediatrician, Anne Glass (Moon Bloodgood), who loses her husband and her only son to the alien hordes. As the story progresses, we categorise Falling Skies as a survival story without really sugarcoating the harsh realities. At the end of it, we are still left to wonder what the aliens are up to? plus numerous small unanswered questions such as, “Is there a government?,” and “How many more people are still alive?” But, the entertainment value and suspense packed in the show is paced just right. You get the feeling that you will get the answers eventually, hopefully sooner than Lost, nonetheless, making you want to devour the next episode immediately. (You can watch Falling Skies on AXN at 10 pm every day)

Sugar, spice and everything nice T

here was a lull in the Bigg Boss house last week but now the mills are churning again and there is much more interesting titbits to share. Bigg Boss has not disappointed its viewers. The week that was, got to see a different side to Juhi Parmar. She had been cocooned earlier by Pooja Bedi and till recently by Sky, but now that the competition is nearing the end, she seems to be getting her

ammo out and in order. The beginning to this change could be seen when Salman Khan was in the house and she almost shrugged aside responsibilities and also when she tried hard to manipulate Sky’s exit. Honestly, his exit would have been a relief, as his idea of fun is to provoke his co-contestants. But you can’t deny the fact that he is a loyal friend to those he is fond of. Being emotional almost

threw him out of the house once until he was called to have a ‘chat’ with the Bigg Boss. What I fail to understand is do the

makers of Bigg Boss think they can easily fool the audience? Showing viewers edited versions of Sky realising his mistake and apologising is so false. When the truth of the matter is that the Bigg Boss interfered to make Sky see sense and almost influenced (although, rightly so) him in making his decision. It is going to be extremely interesting to see the group, that has been causing trouble to a lot of

people, stay without fighting among themselves! Another interesting yet predictable change this week has been the re-entry of Mahek. I am eager to see if she is going to be the same person that she was, or will she ruin her hard-earned popularity by being pompous. Or will being extra-nice get her to the top! Don’t forget to tune in to watch tonight’s episode!

forming to norms saw the entrants win the audience's attention. While veteran actors like Pankaj Kapur and Deepa Sahi's directorial debuts failed to impress, the success of newbies like Bejoy Nambiar and Kiran Rao only proved that they are the future of Bollywood. We list some of the noteworthy new directors of this year.

L

iving in the shadow of a famous husband is not easy. But Kiran Rao impressed one and all with her directorial debut Dhobi Ghat. The film was produced by husband Aamir Khan, who also played an important role in it. Dhobi Ghat was made for a very niche group, the multiplex audience and it had the desired effect. Kiran who showed great maturity for a debutant director also received critical acclaim. People look forward to more from this thinking director.

2. Bejoy Nambiar

N

ot many knew that Bejoy was once married to veteran actor Raj Babbar's daughter Juhi Babbar. But that doesn't really matter now to the award-winning documentary filmmaker who made his debut in Bollywood with the cult film Shaitan and won the hearts of one and all, especially that of his producer Anurag Kashyap. Had it not been for Kashyap, Bejoy might not have been able to present to the world his dark story which had fabulous performances by Rajeev Khandelwal and the rest of the cast. But as they say, all’s well that ends well and now Bollywood has director who is full of new ideas.

4. Nila Madhab Panda

P

anda is a documentary filmmaker who went on to make a path-breaking film produced by Smile Foundation,an NGO. His film I am Kalam won many awards including the national award for the best child artiste, which went to Harsh Mayar. Many were impressed by the film including Amitabh Bachchan and former president Abul Kalam himself. Panda will definitely be one director to look out for in the future.

3. Abhinay Deo

A

bhinay's first film failed to hit the mark with Game receiving flak. One film old he was determined to get it right with Delhi Belly. Not everyone gets a chance to direct two films back to back and that too with two prestigious production houses. Abhinay did that for Game with Excel Entertainment Pvt Ltd and with Aamir Khan Productions. Delhi Belly backed by Aamir Khan made DK Bose run and also made people Shake That Biscuit with Aamir. The movie sent both Aamir and Abhinay laughing their way to the box office.

5. Amol Gupte

6. Luv Ranjan

H

is film on 'bromance', Pyar Ka Punchanama, became so popular that the makers are now contemplating on making a sequel. Made on a low budget, the film still set the cash registers ringing. When casting for the film, Luv was very careful to choose the right people. It took him eight months to complete the casting alone, as he was sure that he did not want any established stars in the film.

T

aare Zameen Par wouldn't have been what it is without him and neither would Kaminey and Phaas Gaya Re Obama, though in different capacities. This writer cum actor, turned director with Stanley Ka Dabba. It was a film for children. The heart-wrenching tale of a child, Stanley, who never gets his lunch is told in a poignant way by Gupte. Gupte’s son Partho, who played Stanley is a revelation. Stanley ka Dabba proves Gupte has a way with children. We hope he makes more of these kind of movies.

Every year sees new sets of actors and directors debuting in Bollywood. This year there was a difference — more directors debuted than actors. What’s interesting is that the fresh crop impressed one and all with their new ideas Others who made their debuts are 1. Alankrita Srivastava (Turning 30) 2. Ali Abbas Zafar (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) 3. Nupur Asthana (Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge) 4. Nitesh Tiwari and Vikas Bahl (Chillar Party) 5. Sanjivan Lal (Bubble Gum) 6. Sohan Roy (Dam 999) 7. Parvin Dabas (Sahi Bande Galat Dhande) 8. Siddique Lal (Bodyguard) 9. Pankaj Kapur (Mausam) 10. Puri Jagannath (Bbuddah....Hoga Tera Baap) 11. Remo D'souza (F.A.L.T.U) 12. Pavan Kriplani (Ragini MMS) 13. Rohit Dhawan (Desi Boyz) 14. Raghav Dhar (My Friend Pinto) 15. Deepa Sahi (Tere Mere Phere) 16. Sahil Sangha (Love Breakups Zindagi) 17. e is known for his candyfloss movies and designer dramas, while she excels at making experimental and real-life inspired stories. Together, Ekta Kapoor and Karan Johar, once rumoured to be a couple, are now ready to co-produce a movie. "Ekta and I are super excited about the script we are producing together... will announce the details as we cast the film and title it!!!" Johar posted on his Twitter page on Wednesday. According to reports, the film will be a love story with a twist, and it will be directed by Akshay Roy. It will be interesting to see what Johar's Dharma Productions and Ekta's Balaji Motion Pictures will have to offer considering their different styles of filmmaking. The rumour about Johar and Ekta's romance had reached its peak when news of their wedding started doing the rounds three years ago. But they have been good friends since childhood, and have been looking forward to working together for a long time. IANS

You brought honour to our India and glory to being an ‘I AM She’ winner!! I salute you!! Congratulations,” Sen tweeted. hojpuri star Ravi Kishan, who will be seen with Naseeruddin Shah in Hriday Shetty’s Chaalis Chauraasi, is in awe of his costar. “Naseer is an institution in himself. He has over two decades of experience in the field of acting and I have learnt a lot from him while shooting for the film. I am completely in awe of him,” Ravi said.“He is very honest, humble and completely loyal towards his work. He is frank, blunt and an unpredictable actor. Working with him was like going back to school and I really enjoyed it,” he added. The story of the film revolves around four cops, who see an opportunity to a great future when they are given a mission to pull off. Things take a twist when another policeman stops their van en route and uses them as bait to catch a gangster. Ravi, who has done over 160 films in Bhojpuri, has yet to achieve that feat in Bollywood, but the actor is happy that he is getting recognition. IANS

Sinead calls off wedding in 16 days T here’s a new leader in the celebrity clubhouse for short marriages. Sure Kim Kardashian ended her lifelong commitment to Kris Humphries after 72 days, but Irish songstress Sinead O’Connor did one better, ending her marriage to husband Barry Herridge after 16 days. O’Connor broke the news on her blog, where she had previously posted pictures from their Las Vegas wedding. O’Connor wrote that her husband felt ‘intense pressure’ not to be involved with her and that the marriage was ‘kiboshed’ within three hours of the ceremony because of the behaviour of certain individuals in his life. Know what else was to blame? Sinead’s search for a little weed, which she says was a “wild ride.” It soon became apparent to O’Connor that Herridge would lose too much staying with her. “So.. U love someone? Set them free.” But O’Connor doesn’t regret it, because it “can’t get more Rock n Roll than that.”

Blood clot in lung caused rapper's death

M

uch-loved rapper Heavy D, who collapsed and died suddenly on November 8, fell victim to a pulmonary embolism —a blood clot in his lung — among other ailments, according to a coroner's officer's report released on Tuesday. Heavy D (real name: Dwight Arrington

Meyers), 44, had collapsed outside his Beverly Hills condo after he suffered difficulty breathing while returning from a morning shopping trip, police said at the time. He later died at Los Angeles Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Besides the blood clot, which likely formed over the course of a long plane ride, the influential '90s rapper also suffered from heart disease and deep leg vein thrombosis, according to Craig Harvey, chief of the Los Angeles County department of coroner. The coroner's report had stated, "manner of death: natural."

John Legend engaged to model Chrissy Teigen J

ohn Legend has gotten the green light for marriage. The Grammy-winning soul singer popped the question to his longtime girlfriend, model Chrissy Teigen, over the holidays, his publicist confirms to E! News. Legend's rep, Cindi Berger, tells us the pair—who've been dating since 2007—got engaged "while vacationing in the Maldives." No other details were disclosed. The 32-year-old crooner has yet to discuss the good news on his Twitter page, preferring to stick to the NFL playoff picture and fantasy football. His newly minted fiancee is a 26-year-old Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. Both posted twitpics of a boxing match they attended recently in Bangkok, Thailand.

I am a good liar Vijayendra Prasad, who often collaborates with his son, SS Rajamouli, is one of the top screenwriters today in Telugu cinema. He tells us about his career so far and what it means to see his dreams come true. Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

V

ijayendra Prasad has a serene look on his face when we sit down for an interview soon after the release of his latest film Rajanna. His expressions and responses are measured to the extent that we begin to wonder if he knew exactly what we were going to ask him. Perhaps, his serenity and wisdom originate from the experience of having to struggle a lot in the industry before finally tasting success. “I failed in almost everything I tried for a very long time,” he confesses while talking about his brief stint with agriculture and business. “Back in 1983, my elder brother, Siva Datta, father of MM Keeravani, was planning to make a film, so I ended up joining his team to help him with the project,” he adds. The year was 1983 and it turns out that the project had to be shelved midway due to lack of funds. Five years later, he began his career as a story writer with Janaki Ramudu, a K Raghavendra Rao film starring Nagarjuna and Vijayashanti. After that he wrote dialogues for Nagarjuna's Gharana Bullodu and the story for Akkineni Nageswara Rao's Bangaru Kutumbam. But the turning point of his career was Balakrishna's Samarasimha Reddy. The film, which released in 1999, was a blockbuster and rewrote the records of that time in Tollywood. Then he wrote stories for

his son SS Rajamouli's films like Simhadri, Chatrapati, Sye, Magadheera and Vikramarkudu. So, what's his secret for success? “I am a good liar,” he says with a poker face. “After I joined my brother in the industry, I realised soon that there's no truth in the stories we make. And I knew that I had the knack to spin interesting stories,” he clarifies. If he isn't lying, then let’s just say that he's extremely good at what he does. We ask him if his life has had an impact on what he writes. “I never wanted to project reality in my stories. It's not that I have no social consciousness, but that's not my cup of tea. A lot of writers back in the 70s and 80s were trying to depict what was happening in the society, but I never tried my hand at that,” he answers and adds, “The only thing which influenced me as a writer is my struggle for existence in the industry.” For a very long time, he wanted to direct a film and it took him more than 15 years to see his dream come true. “I couldn't find producers for a very long time. Directing a film has always been a dream for me,” he says. We prod him further to reveal why he couldn't convince producers to back him. “Look, I believe I am a good writer, but when it comes to selling my story, I am not that good. I can just try to convince them that I can deliver a hit,” he says. Over the past few years, he did taste failure at the box office at times. Did it affect him as a writer? “I feel bad when I know that few films have failed because of my mistakes in the story, but a lot of times writers can't be held responsible if a film doesn't work. Sometimes, people meddle with the story unnecessarily,” he confesses while refraining from mentioning any names. “You can't rectify anything once a film releases.” In 2006, he made his debut as a director with Ali, Brahmanandam starrer Sri Krishna 2006 which sank without a trace. However, his recent directorial venture, Rajanna has earned him rave reviews. “Given a choice between writing and direction, I will choose direction. It's more exciting because you get to see your vision come alive on the screen,” he says. So, what's his dream project? “I don't have any dream project but I have dreams to make films,” he says.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
