rue to their word, the YSRC which has assumed the role of the main opposition after the smashing victory in the by-elections, today began its task in the City in earnest by organising a dharna on the Kukatpally-Hitec City road to protest the protracted work of the railway over bridge that results in massive gridlocks on this arterial road. Scores of the YSRC workers and supporters joined the protest that blamed government apathy to a major mass issue. This railway over bridge planned in 2007 and pledged to be completed in nine months by the HMDA has already consumed three more years and the completion is still nowhere in sight, the YSRC leaders alleged. “It’s a challenge to the people,” declared Rahul Reddy, a supporter of the YSRC who was lustily cheering the protesters. “Commuters to Hitec City from

It’s the government prerogative to transfer officials but what makes it looks like a ‘correction exercise’ is the fact that four of the 14 shifted have been collectors of districts that have witnessed bypolls this month. The traffic police are also closing the way completely when there is heavy rainfall forcing commuters to take the longer alternate routes through Hafeezpet.” “I get late for work everyday. It takes almost 40 minutes to travel 2 km on my bike. Even with a light shower, there is water logging which results in chaotic traffic during rush hour. I do not know what the government has been doing for the last 10 days. They should at least take the necessary steps to get water logging sorted so that commuters will not face long traffic jams,” said Mohd Razdan, a techie who regularly commutes via this road. The Lok Satta party, under whose constituency the area falls, had earlier blamed both the railway authorities and the HMDA officials for the mess. The party leader Jayaprakash Narayan regretted that despite revising the budget to build the bridge, the project was dragging along endlessly.

he recent death of a constable while undergoing promotional training in Warangal once again brings to focus the issue of the lack of fitness in the City constabulary. A police constable S Satyanarayana of Hyderabad who was promoted to head constable was in training at Mamoor camp in Warangal when he collapsed and died in hospital. The 45 year old victim joined the police department in 1984. He was posted to the Madannapet police station. He was married and had two kids. Recently, 286 constables were promoted as head constables, of which 100 were sent to Karimnagar and 186 to Warangal. His colleagues alleged that the training is very harsh. “We are made to

All sorts of protests like rallies, dharnas, bursting crackers are banned in the vicinity of this important historical monument. The police now know they are unwary youths. The assistant commissioner of police Charminar division M Rammohan Roa said the arrested had been celebrating the opening of

But the officer in-charge of the training camp (IPS) confided in this reporter that the complaints are misplaced. “They fall into bad habits and wrong lifestyle and are unable to stand up to fitness tests.” He said Satyanarayana was suffering from weak lungs, the officer said. He said it is no good blaming the government or the police department.

Rasoolpura’s underdogs live a potluck life The most basic of all amenities required for survival, water supply and sanitation, are absent in the City’s largest slum. The SCB seems incapable of delivering the necessary services Rahul Ramakrishna rahul.r@postnoon.com
W
hile the slum has been under constant documentation and in news for over a decade, the SCB (Secunderabad cantonment board) has failed its promises. During the municipal elections, borewells were hurriedly dug in each lane that promised to solve all the water woes in the slum. A few months down the lane, these inferior quality borewells fail to work and their responsibility falls on the residents who repair it on and off spending from their own pockets. Regularising and legalising the patta land is another potential vote bank though it requires a lot of bureaucratic effort. The Cantonment Board undertakes water supply to the area through its own pipeline. Only a few lanes of Rasoolpura, especially the urbanised and developed parts where the middle class reside have water connections. But within the slums, water connection is a rarity.
For those whose luck has not favoured a connection, they depend solely on borewells and private tankers. But given the faulty bores, most of the residents tend to rely on private tankers that charge whimsical rates. Fights routinely break out while filling up water cans and pots. According to a medical practitioner, the drinking water supplied to the people in the tankers is hard water and has a probability
INSIGHT INTO... Rasoolpura of carrying water-borne diseases. The SCB has abdicated its responsibility of ensuring supply of potable water to residents. Rasoolpura’s major slum establishments namely Indirammanagar and Gun Bazaar have very few legal water and sanitation connections. These colonies within the Cantonment area do not have underground
sewerage system. In Indirammanagar, where the poorest of the poor live in makeshift houses, sewage is sent through pipes in crude septic tanks which overflow and let out smelly sediments. This raw sewage ends up in the open nallah that flows through the slum. Often, cleaners are engaged to manually clear out sewage that gets stuck as there is no streamlined dispersing system. A ward member of the Cantonment Board says, “As of now the drainage system is quite fine by itself. We have taken initiatives to remap and rework the drainage system but funds need to be allocated under the slums annual budget of `16 crore. Until then, we are constantly keeping a check on and maintaining the drainage and sewage system which can withstand the extremities of the monsoons.” In 2002, there had been efforts to survey the settlement and map an underground drainage system by the HMWS&SB but till date, there has been no effect or work regarding this matter. The sheer lack of space has
Our children live by the nallahs and we are worried about their safety. If it were not for NGOs, we would have all been swept away by disease long back. Yadamma, resident, Indirammanagar forced the residents to adapt themselves accordingly. Lack of sanitation comes from the fact that a hole dug into the ground is a toilet from where the waste is carried into septic tanks. Some houses do not even have makeshift bathrooms and basic needs are catered to by public toilets. An irregular system of disposal ensures that the karamcharis who clear it are well paid through bribes. The piled up garbage
often finds itself in the nallah or drains that clog and bring sewage water into the houses. “There is no water or sanitation here. Our daily routine of finding water, waiting, collecting and using it itself takes seven hours. Our leaders help us out not because it is their responsibility but because they think they are doing us a humanitarian help. And, politicians do so for the sake of votes. What other option do we have?” asks Ahmed Ghouse an auto driver. The annual budget of `16 crore fails to lend solace to the deprived lives of the slum. For namesake, the ward members and the local MLA appear once in a while to lay bores or inaugurate schools that too out of political benefit. Within the heart of the slum, there is a simmering unrest among its people. “Our children live by the nallahs and we are worried about their safety. What we have is an illegal, unregistered house with an illegal electricity connection. If it were not for NGOs, we would have all been swept away by disease long back,” says Yadamma, a resident of Indirammanagar.

nly a government school can do this. One room and several classes! From outside it’s a community hall but on entering you will find 45 to 50 students of different divisions studying. Two blackboards and teaching tools and one partition is all they have. The GSP School at Golnaka in Amberpet accommodates students from classes I to V in one elongated room. Each teacher has to speak in a high tone to reach the students and in the chaos all end up out shouting at each other. They don’t even have a toilet of their own. This school was started 15 years back by a volunteer group called Vidya Volunteers. Later in 2000 the government took over the school. The teachers are government-appointed. “We all are well qualified but this is the kind of environment we work in. We don’t have a choice that’s how it has been since the beginning. We have just one room and we are surviving in this space. We don’t even have a bathroom. It gets very inconvenient at times,” said Kalani G, a teacher. According to the new rules by the education department each school should have its own toilets. Schools which fail to do will see their recognition rescinded. Following its own rules the government decided to transfer these stu-
dents to other government schools which are 4 kilometers away from this school and shut down the one room school. However, the slum leaders and local officials stopped this from happening. They are of the opinion that if these kids are transferred then they will not go and will quit studying. “Regarding the toilet, we have arranged a school help who will take students to the nearest public toilet. Of the expansion of school we will do it soon. We have a budget sanctioned and will construct a better school next year. For this year to sustain students its better they study here in this school than

change their school,” said Badraiah, a slum leader. The headmistress of the school, Lalitha, agrees to the community’s decision. Talking to Postnoon she tells “It’s better that they study here than shifting them to another school which is 2-4 kilometers away. The backgrounds these students come from makes them prospective drop outs. So it’s better they study here than sending them out, however imperfect the situation is,” says Lalitha. On the other hand, looking deep into the matter she comments that the problem is with both the community heads and the government. “According to the government
rules there should be one school every one kilometer but here we have private schools but no government school within a 4 kilometers radius. Secondly, the slum leaders have been promising us that they will construct first floor soon and they also have `5 lakh sanctioned but we have not seen any results as yet,” she adds. This is the condition of a school where students are stuffed in one room. In all possibilities a class II student may be attending class V classes and vice-versa. If the school children are transferred to another then the chances of drooping out are higher. If kept here this is the condition. What do they choose?
No T-party for Pranab, BJP: Telangana mantris
I
t is not that Pranab Mukherjee miserably failed to help creation of Telangana state, he is also leaving the economy in a sickly state. The BJP national secretary P Muralidhar Rao on Thursday
appealed to the MPs and MLAs from the State, who favour Telangana Statehood not to vote for Pranab Mukherjee in the Presidential election. During the 2004 elections, the Congress had assured that it would take positive steps on carving out Telangana State and included the issue in Common Minimum Program (CMP). As a part of it, the UPA had set up a three-member committee headed by Pranab Mukherjee to study the Telangana statehood issue, he reminded. He is leaving behind a slowed down economy. On that count too he has been an abject failure. The Committee disappointed the State leaving the issue a festering wound. How can anyone who loves the State vote for Mukherjee? Wondered Rao. NSS

UNDERSTANDING OPTIONS Nupur Pavan Bang and AmulyaChirala
Srikanth: Hi Professor! Hope you have some time because I have a ton of questions! Srikanth: How would buying an option differ from buying a stock? Prof Nikki: when you buy a call option, you own the right to buy the stock. But you do not own the stock and therefore have no right over dividends. Also, the extent to which the price movement of the option imitates the price movement of the stock depends on the strike price and the stock price. Also, you own a stock till you sell it, but an option expires. It is an instrument with limited life. Srikanth: What do you mean by the strike price? Prof Nikki: Strike price is the price at which you will buy or sell the underlying asset. The current market price, on the other hand, is known as the spot price. Srikanth: So when would you suggest I buy options? Prof Nikki: There are several scenarios when buying options would be a good idea. The first case I can think of is when the prices of a stock you own are falling rapidly. This is a situation that no one likes. And to protect yourself from potentially large losses, you can buy a put option to sell the stock at a certain acceptable price. Srikanth: A quick question here Prof, can I buy options in such a
BlackBerry maker Research in Motion offered up a grim quarterly report on Thursday showing deepening losses and worsening sales, as it announced 5,000 job cuts and a delay in its new smartphone platform. The struggling Canadian firm said its loss in the quarter ending June 2 widened to $518 million. It delayed until early 2013 a new platform to help BlackBerry compete with Apple and other smartphone makers. The report was worse than expected and sent RIM shares tumbling nearly 18 percent in after-hours trade to $7.44.

The company, which has been hammered in the rapidly changing market now dominated by makers of devices using Google’s Android software and Apple’s iPhone, said it would cut jobs to boost efficiency and save $1 billion in operating costs. The move includes “a global workforce reduction of approximately 5,000 employees, which is expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2013.” To make matters worse, the company said it was delaying its new BlackBerry 10 platform, which had been expected later this year in an effort to drive sales in the key holiday season.
an option would be good for me? Prof Nikki: Like I said earlier, there are several situations. Before I tell you more, I really need you to understand that options are instruments that offer immense leverage because you are paying only a fraction of the money in the form of the premium. You actually pay for the stock or the commodity when you exercise the option. While this seems like a good strategy, you should always be careful and manage risk. Srikanth: I understand Professor… Do you think it would be a good idea to buy call options on a stock
that I am optimistic about? Prof Nikki: You are learning fast indeed! It is a good idea. But please remember that if you plan to actually exercise the option, you will need to have enough capital to buy it at the strike price. As a matter of fact Srikanth, there are several strategies that one can use with different combinations of options. But the more complex strategies need to be managed regularly. It is advisable to take help of a portfolio manager if you are serious about investing in futures and options.
Italy, Spain block EU deal BRUSSELS: In a cry for help, Italy and Spain joined forces Thursday, blocking a key EU deal on growth failing swift pledges from their partners to fight off market pressure threatening their economies. The strong-arm tactics spoiled a crucial two-day summit set to end Friday with a deal on a growth pact aimed at breathing life into Europe’s flagging economies and sealing splits between the bloc’s 27 nations. While European Union heads of state and government announced an agreement to inject 120 billion euros ($150 billion) into cross-border infrastructure projects that would create muchneeded jobs, they were unable to finalise a so-called “growth compact” due to the stand by Spain and Italy.
Madrid and Rome have seen their borrowing costs soar as markets lose confidence in their ability to reduce huge deficits. “There are two countries that are very keen to ensure there is agreement on longterm measures and short-term measures,” EU president Herman Van Rompuy told a news conference after seven hours of talks. “I wouldn’t say there is a blockage, discussions are ongoing,” he said. A knotty mess this SRINAGAR: Shutdowns and curfew-like restrictions following the destruction of the 200-year-old Dastgeer Sahib shrine in the old city here has forced many families to postpone wedding ceremonies and cancel the traditional ‘Wazwaan’ feast. At least a dozen families had today issued cancellation notifications of the wedding ceremonies and feasts in local newspapers. Kashmir Valley has remained shut for four consecutive days since Monday when the revered shrine, housing centuries old relics, was gutted in a devastating fire. The fire triggered protests as people clashed with police and paramilitary officers in the old city prompting the government to impose restrictions on the civilian movement in Srinagar’s volatile downtown neighbourhoods.
“Due to the prevailing situation, the marriage ceremony which was scheduled on June 29 and 30 is hereby cancelled”, a notification in a local newspaper. The notifications are reminiscent of 2008 and 2010 when hundreds of wedding ceremonies and feasts were cancelled during the summer protests in the Valley. The marriage ceremonies in Kashmir are accompanied by an elaborate Wazwaan feast — a mutton cuisine considered an art and has a place of pride in Kashmiri culture. The continuous shutdown in the Valley, where most of the shops have remained shut for the last four days, has led to nonavailability of supplies forcing marriage cancellations. Guests have also been struggling to travel across the Valley to the host destinations. IANS

Mumbai, Delhi to face thirsty future: Study NEW
DELHI: Mumbai and Delhi which are presently reeling under water crisis will require the maximum supply of the municipal tap water in the world by 2025, according to a Mckinsey Global Institute report. Mumbai tops the list of the 20 global cities in terms of
municipal water demand in the next 13 years, followed by Delhi, the report said. Three other Indian cities — Kolkata, Pune and Hyderabad — are ranked seventh, 12th and 16th respectively in the list of 20 cities needing the maximum supply. The report is released at a
time when Delhi and Mumbai are already in the grip of water crisis, especially in peak summer. It said the demand would rise as urbanisation would grow fast. “In India and China whose urbanisation is occurring on a very large scale, we are seeing
FINNS TAKE A LIKING TO DESI FOOD HELSINKI: When one thinks of this Land of the Midnight Sun, the first thing that comes to one’s mind is reindeer meat. But this capital city of Finland boasts of at least two dozen Indian restaurants that serve mouth-watering palak paneer, chole-naan, kadi-pakora, butter chicken and other delicacies. How come Indian food is a major hit with the Finns? “People love Indian food here. From dal to curries to nans, you name it. It is very popular here,” Rumon Rehman, a Bangladeshi national, who works in Namaskaar, told IANS. Namaskaar is among the first Indian restaurants that opened here. Much has changed since then. This city of one million people now has a Gandi, Maharaja, Samrat, Indian Taj and Mount Everest, to name just a few. But one interesting thing is most of these restaurants are run by either Nepalese or Bangladeshis.
Rasul claimed Namaskaar was first started with the help of an Indian and it soon became synonymous with authentic Indian food. Seeing its success, others took its franchise and opened new ones with the same name. A walk down the capital city, known for its lakes and islands, reveals many Indiansounding names of restaurants. It is easy to see their popularity with the Finns as well as with the international expat community. And the beautiful summer drives them to these roadside restaurants for what locals consider exotic cuisine. “We love the breads and the lovely spicy curries. Basically, I love Indian food. They have so much to offer in both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian menu,” Helina, a college student, told a visiting IANS correspondent. She said India and its rich cultural tradition also created a buzz among them to try out Indian food. “People here know about India. Some of my friends have been to India. I hope I also get a chance soon. My aim is to taste the hottest curry possible so I can boast about it,” Helina said. Keeping the tastes of the local people in mind, the Indian palate is milder. Apart from Indian food, restaurants also offer a wide variety of South Asian delicacies from Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Rehman said apart from the natives loving the Indian spread, many Indians — either traveling or working — make a beeline for their restaurants.
the incomes of a large number of consumers hit a ‘take off’ level at which the consumption of many goods and services picks up speed rapidly,” the report pointed out. By 2025, the annual demand for municipal water in the world’s large cities is likely to increase from around 190 billion
cubic meters per year today to about 270 billion cubic meters per year. Among the top 10 cities, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Khartoum, Dhaka and Istanbul are other global cities that are likely to witness significant water demand. PTI

CRPF turns tables, kills 16 Maoists in Dantewada RAIPUR: Sixteen naxalites were killed and six CRPF jawans injured after a fierce overnight encounter in the jungles of Dantewada in Chhattisgarh. The encounter, which took place in the jungles of Silger, a “liberated” Maoist zone between the naxal hotbed of Jagargunda and Basaguda in Dantewada, was launched last night by the CRPF from three directions. Two Maoists have also been arrested after the encounter. The encounter is significant as this is the first time that the central force has recovered these many bodies of naxals. The arrested Maoists have been airlifted to the State capital Raipur. Official sources said that six CRPF men, including two CoBRA commandos, have sustained bullet injuries and they have been air-lifted for medical aid.
Pathribal encounter: Army to court martial accused officers SRINAGAR: The Army has decided to try in General Court Martial its five officers allegedly involved in the Pathribal fake encounter killing in Anantnag district of Kashmir in March 2000. The Army moved an application before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar, seeking transfer of the Pathribal fake encounter case to the General Court Martial, a court official said. He said the CJM has directed transferring the records including the charge-sheet and other material evidence to the General Court Martial through the Army’s authorised officer. The Army’s decision came after the Supreme Court on May one gave eight weeks’ time to it to decide whether the accused officers will be tried in the GCM or face a trial in the civilian court. As per the CBI investigation, the five civilians were killed and branded as militants. PTI
Preliminary reports suggest that the casualty figures of the naxalites could increase as information from deep inside the jungles is trickling in slowly. This is the same area, close to Chintalnar, where naxals have carried out the biggest ever attack on security forces killing 75 CRPF men and one state police personnel in April 2010. According to the sources, the CRPF has mobilised three units of commandos and regular troops, aided by two helicopters for the encounter. Firing is still on and the force has rushed in additional troops and logistics to the area in the wee hours today. PTI

Eunuch mayor disqualified BHOPAL: The election of eunuchs to senior posts has been nullified by courts for the lack of clarity on their gender. Kamla Bua, a eunuch, had won the Sagar mayoral polls in 2009 by a handsome margin of over 43,000 votes from the seat reserved for SC category women. Her nearest rival challenged the verdict in the district court in 2011 saying that Kamla Bua was a eunuch and therefore, he cannot contest polls from a seat reserved for women. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court nullified the election of Kamla Bua on the ground that being a eunuch he had failed to prove that he is a woman and secondly, he also failed to prove that he belonged to the scheduled caste category. The court also rejected the argument that the issue should have been settled at the time of scrutiny of the nomination papers. “Though the court has nullified Kamla’s election, it failed to address the basic issue as to what category these persons belong to and from where they can contest elections — seats reserved for men or for women,” Prof Ayub Khan from Government Maharani Laxmi Bai College of Excellence, Gwalior, who has deeply studied the subject said. Parents pray for their children in encephalitis-hit Bihar MUZAFFARPUR:
The disease has already claimed the lives of more than 200 children and affected nearly 600 in Bihar. Distraught parents are now praying to god to save their children. The disease, called acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), is not Japanese encephalitis, the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) announced on Thursday. “In fact the disease remains a mysterious one,” additional secretary (Health) RP Ojha said. Manoj Paswan and his wife Lakhni Devi have lost all hope,
as their three-and-a-half-yearold child is fighting for life after contracting AES. They are not paying heed to doctors’ assurances that their child will survive. Both are praying for divine blessings. Last week, they had admitted their only son in the encephalitis ward of the Sri Krishna Memorial College and Hospital in Muzaffarpur, but his condition has not shown any signs of improvement. “We are praying to god to save our child,” Paswan, a landless farmer said. Sunil Kumar, another par-
ent of an AES-affected girl, said his daughter is in a critical condition. “Only the rain god can save my child as doctors told us that the monsoon will help to suppress the virus causing the disease,” Kumar said. In Muzaffarpur, worst affected by AES, the parents of AES-affected children have begun fearing the worst. “We are helpless, hoping against hope for our child’s survival,” said Ranju Devi, mother of a five-year-old boy who has been at the Kejriwal hospital in Muzaffarpur for five days. Termites polish off £35,000 LONDON: Termites got into a Taiwanese woman’s safe and munched their way through 32,700 pounds in cash that she saved to study abroad, it was reported here. She turned to Taiwan’s Investigation Bureau to help her exchange her bundles of damaged notes for new ones. However, the bureau’s forensic unit only managed to piece together a quarter of the notes from the piles of shredded paper, the Daily Mail reported Thursday. The woman, identified only by her surname Chen, had graduated from a Taipei university last year. It took her eight years of hard work to come up with the money. This April, Chen found that termites had eaten most of the piles of cash at a safe in her house. The bureau urged people to put their money in banks to avoid similar incidents from happening again.

LONDON: A “genetic vaccine” will halt nicotine cravings and could even be used to stop children starting the habit, say experts. Just one jab could provide life-long protection against nicotine cravings and it could eventually be used to vaccinate children to stop them ever getting hooked. The vaccine, being developed at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, has so far been tested only on mice, but research involving people could begin in as little as two years, Daily Mail reported Thursday. The jab contains genes “programmed” to make antibodies that neutralise nicotine before it reaches the brain, where it would normally trigger the pleasurable feelings that underlie addiction. The theory is that if smokers no longer get such gratification from cigarettes, they will find it easier to quit.

new study suggests that 75 percent of women are unwilling to date an unemployed man. The survey, conducted by specialty dating service It’s Just Lunch, asked 925 single women, “Would you go out on a date with someone whom you knew was unemployed?” According to a press release from the site, 33 percent of women said “No while 42 percent answered “Maybe” with the stipulation that “I wouldn’t want to throw a lot of time into it unless they had a game plan for getting back on track.” Irene LaCota, spokesperson for It’s Just Lunch, said that not having a job will definitely hinder a man’s chances in the dating game, perhaps because women are looking for someone to take care of them. “This is the rare area, compared to other topics we’ve done surveys on, where women’s
old-fashioned beliefs about sex roles seem to apply.” Carole Bartholomeaux, president of Bartholomeaux PR in Phoenix, Arizona, laid it all out in the release as to why she would never date an unemployed man saying, “I will not have a relationship with someone whom I need to support.” Ouch. LiveScience noted that men may have different priorities. Only one-third of the men surveyed said they wouldn’t date an unemployed woman.

WASHINGTON: White House hopeful Mitt Romney led a reinvigorated Republican charge on Thursday against health care reforms, with a snap vote called to repeal the law after it was upheld by the US Supreme Court. “What the court did not do on the last day in session, I will do on my first day if elected president of the United States, and that is that I will act to repeal ‘Obamacare,’” Romney vowed. The high court upheld President Barack Obama’s health care reforms to insure another 32 million Americans in a major victory as the Democratic leader seeks re-election in November in what is shaping up to be a tight race. Despite the court ruling, Romney said its nine justices “did not... say that Obamacare is good law or that it is good policy.” “Obamacare was bad law yesterday. It is bad law today,” he said, arguing the Affordable Care Act would raise taxes, cause the national deficit to balloon and make up to 20 million Americans lose their existing insurance. Republican leaders on Thursday set a July 11 vote in the House of Representatives to repeal the law, but it will likely be dead on arrival in the Democratcontrolled Senate. The court ruling is a huge boost for Obama and he hailed it as “a victory for people all over this country.” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, said he was pleased the Supreme Court
India bigger threat than Taliban, Qaeda: Pak survey WASHINGTON: Only one in five Pakistanis have a favourable view of India with almost six in 10 considering it a bigger threat to their country than the Taliban, or Al Qaeda, according to a new survey made available here. But as the survey of Pakistan by the Pew Research Centre’s Global Attitudes Project notes 22 per cent of Pakistanis having a favourable view of India is actually a slight improvement from 14 per cent last year. Pakistanis have identified India as the top threat since the question was first asked in 2009. The percentage fearing India has increased by 11 points, while the percentage naming Taliban has decreased by nine points. Despite this, 62 per cent Pakistanis say it is important to improve relations with India. Roughly two-thirds support more bilateral trade and further talks to reduce tension between the two nations. House holds AG Holder in contempt WASHINGTON: US lawmakers on Thursday took the historic, controversial step of holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt, sharpening the election-year discord between the Obama administration and its Republican foes in Congress. Some 100 furious Democrats led by Nancy Pelosi, the party’s top member in the House of Representatives, stormed out of the chamber at the start of the vote. They were protesting what they described as highly partisan action to railroad the contempt vote through the House. The move paves the way for
legal action over a probe into the gun-tracking Operation Fast and Furious, and Holder’s failure to turn over internal Justice Department documents and emails sought through subpoena by a congressional panel conducting the investigation. The House also passed a civil contempt resolution, which would authorise the panel to sue the Justice Department in federal court over the documents. The contempt finding, the first for a sitting member of a president’s cabinet, was immediately branded by the White House as a “transparently political stunt.” AFP

10,000 regal diamonds on show LONDON: More than 10,000 diamonds set in works worn by British monarchs for over 250 years will go on show at London’s Buckingham Palace this summer to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee. The exhibition includes a range of the queen’s personal jewels, including the Diadem crown that she is seen wearing on many portraits and postage stamps, and other works chosen for their historic and artistic significance. “This (the Diamond Diadem crown) is a very, very familiar jewel,” said exhibition curator Caroline de Guitaut. “It was originally for the coronation of George IV, which took place in 1821, but it’s very closely associated with... Queen Elizabeth II. “She wore it on a journey from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey for her own coronation in 1953 and
she’s also worn it to and from the palace of Westminster for every single state opening of her reign since 1952,” she added. Other highlights include items made from the world’s largest diamond, the “Cullinan” diamond, named after the owner of the mine in South Africa where it was discovered in 1905. According to legend, the diamond was so big that mine
staff threw it out of the window believing it was an ordinary stone, before identifying it as a gem. The 10.1 cm stone was offered to King Edward VII as a pledge of loyalty and has produced no fewer than nine major diamonds, 96 small brilliants and nine unpolished fragments. Several jewels, such as the Delhi Durbar Tiara, Queen Victoria’s fringe brooch and the Kokoshnik Tiara, are on display for the first time. Other more intimate items of the queen will also be on show. They include the South Africa necklace, which was presented to her in 1947 and the Williamson brooch. The diamonds, which were acquired by six British monarchs, will be on show from June 30 to July 8 and July 31 to October 7, during the palace’s summer opening. AFP

Talk back What a waste I feel so sorry for the girl who died saving portraits of the world’s worst dictators, not that any of the rest was any better, but these two were pure loonies. Maybe that’s why Kim Jong-il’s name rhymed with ill. Here’s a man who thought giant rabbits would become the answer to the poverty of people of North Korea; spent thousands of pounds for his annual supply of cognac; just went pottering about the whole country and getting pictures clicked of him looking into the horizon while his party of sycophants waited upon him with faces that expressed abject servility… the list is endless. I can write pages about the lunacies of the late dictator. And the poor girl had to hold onto portraits of none other than the great leaders when her soul was leaving her body. There have been many people’s revolutions that usurped many dictatorships in history. The people of North Korea should have drawn inspiration from the partial success of the Arab Spring that resulted in the liberation of a couple of Arab countries. But not a whiff of something similar to rebellion was ever found in North Korea: it is just astounding. Have they not had enough? Will they endure this tyranny till earth itself is to end? It was recently known that some North Koreans were punished because they did not mourn enough for “our father”. They should have seized that chance that came in the form of Kim’s death. I fear their fate is to sing “No Motherland Without You” till kingdom come. Darshan Thomas Narayanguda
Hats off to Rasoolpura Your series on Rasoolpura slums is very good. While we celebrate the wealth and splendour of the city, the lives of thousands who are struggling every day to eke out a decent living is pushed under the carpet. These underprivileged people deserve to be treated with respect as they are battling heavy odds and official neglect to give themselves and their families a good life. The lame excuses does not absolve the government from failing in its responsibilities to these people. After all, it is the poor and not the rich, who brave the weather, stand in queues and vote the netas to power. These are the people who provide al l the necessary basic services that allows Hyderabad to keep its tag of being an ‘affordable’ City. The massive slum area might be an eyesore but they allow us to keep our lifestyles afloat with minimal expenditure. So the rest of us owe it to them. Chandra J Nath Nampally

ewspaper headlines in recent weeks are screaming about India’s soaring suicide rate. One expert in particular noted that Indian women kill themselves at a rate three times higher than in wealthy western countries, particularly married women. Why? From my experience, working with India’s teens and people in their twenties, and from what data is available, women commit suicide for three major reasons: n Chemical depression n Sexual abuse that leads to depression n Physical abuse that leads to depression. Interestingly, the main solution to all of these is rather simple: communication. People who can talk openly about their depression, whatever the cause of it, and get help, are far more likely to get over their depression, avoid suicide and lead productive lives. Simple in theory, but not in practice. The taboos in all three areas are so strong that virtually nobody facing any of these issues in India is in a position to openly, candidly talk about them. Take straight chemical depression. In many cases, this can be treated with drugs, but how many families are willing to openly talk about getting a depressed family member psychological help? They’d frequently rather hide the depression, ignore it, deny it. And what about sexual abuse. In most cases, this is inflicted by a “trusted” family member or friend, and the child, unless taught in advance about how to deal with sexual abuse, is powerless to act. In the rare case where the child does report the abuse, she is frequently punished for saying such “terrible things” about her abuser. The abuser thus continues to abuse other children, and the victim goes through life battling feelings of self-loathing and suicide. Then there is physical abuse. In an arranged marriage, the pressure on the woman to stay in the marriage (particularly when large, illegal dowries have been paid) from her own parents is more than she can resist. Frequently, if she does work up the courage and reports the abuse to her parents, she is chastised, and told to “be a better wife”

T
IN INDIA, KIDS ARE TAUGHT HOW TO NAVIGATE CROSSING TREACHEROUS ROADS. THEY ARE TAUGHT TO PLAY CHESS, AND CRICKET, TO READ, AND WRITE. BUT THEY AREN’T TAUGHT TO TALK ABOUT DEPRESSION, OR SEXUAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE. so the husband won’t hit her as much. In a love marriage, particularly where the marriage went against the parents’ wishes, the sense of humiliation is too great; no matter how badly the woman is abused, she frequently cannot bring herself to admit her “failure” in choosing a spouse by herself.
In India, kids are taught how to navigate crossing treacherous roads. They are taught to play chess, and cricket, to read, and write. But they aren’t taught to talk about depression, or sexual and physical abuse. Which means parents are putting more value on swinging a bat, or moving a rook, than on arming their kids with the one tool they may need most to survive: open communication. In 2010, there were nearly 200,000 official suicides reported in India. In fact, the number may be much higher, because the taboos against suicide are so strong that families often hide the fact that the fatal damage was self-inflicted. The surest path to counting those you love among these numbers is to keep silent, to not discuss issues of depression and abuse. So let’s talk.
JUSTICE TO PATHRIBAL VICTIMS MUST to restore faith in the army
he Army has done the right thing in initiating court martial proceedings against five senior officers over the Pathribal killings. Five civilians were 'taken away' and killed to pass them off as militants, after 35 pilgrims were killed by the militants the previous day. This incident is only one among several cases of arbitrary killings that the armed forces have been accused of. The fact that cash awards and promotions await those who manage to kill militants is an easy lure to some. Over the last few years, the military has been steadily losing its face owing to massive scandals and conviction of several top-ranking officers. The leaked former army chief's letter to the prime minister has laid bare the poor level of preparedness and bribe offers to clear substandard equipment. If the army ensures that Pathribal victims get justice and the perpetrators of the crime are punished, it will serve as a potent confidence-building measure. For ensuring peace in the valley, the troops need to credibly convince the local populace that their presence is a boon and not a bane.

Music is known to have a healing touch and that is what the Neve family witnessed when their daughter woke up from coma on hearing Adele’s song
A
7-year-old girl woke up from a life-threatening coma when Adele’s Rolling in the Deep came on the radio. Charlotte Neve suffered a rare type of brain hemorrhage in midApril, and slipped into a coma after two operations were performed to stop the bleeding. Doctors told her mother, Leila, that her daughter’s chances didn’t look good, The Telegraph reported. The girl had been in a coma for a week when her mother stopped in one day and began singing to Rolling in the Deep, which was on the radio. Charlotte smiled in response, astounding doctors. Within two days, she started speaking and even managed to get out of bed, The Daily Mail reported. “I couldn’t believe it,” Leila Neve told The Telegraph. “It was the first time she had reacted to anything since the hemorrhage. The nurses were astounded and told me to keep singing, and she smiled again... [They] said it was like I ‘unlocked her,’ and from that day she started getting better and better.” Since then, Charlotte’s recovery has been speedy. She’s partially blind and suffers from memory loss, but is already back in school parttime and taking dance classes. “How she’s still here is beyond everybody,” Leila Neve said. “I was told that she was very lucky to survive.” Charlotte’s friends and family set up a Facebook group, “Lottie Loo’s Get Well Wish,” chronicling her progress.

I
f you grew up in the 1980s then you will know what we are talking about. Wham! A 1981 British duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, gave lots of sweethearts around the world a reason to rejoice. Michael was singer/ composer/ producer/ instrumentalist all rolled into one while Ridgeley on the other hand was the group’s image specialist and spokesman and was crucial to the band’s initial success. At first they were dismissed as a contrived teenybopper act during their mid-80s reign on the charts. Still teenagers, they promoted themselves as hedonistic youngsters, proud to live a carefree life without work or commitment. Wham! Grew popular for its cottoncandy singles and was later known as George Micheal’s vehicle to fame. Ridgeley convinced a reluctant George Michael that Wham! needed to change their image and sound frequently, from the leather-clad moody singers of Bad Boys and Young Guns (Go For It!) to the more fashionable pop superstars of Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. By the end of 1983, Wham! was rivaling Duran Duran and Culture Club as Britain’s biggest pop act. Notoriety and column inches were duly achieved with their antics of placing a shuttlecock down their shorts, and their first album Fantastic reached #1.The ballad Careless Whisper also reached #1 in USA and UK, as did Wham!’s second album, Make It Big. Michael desired to create music targeted to a more sophisticated audience than the duo’s primarily teenage fan base. Therefore, Michael and Ridgeley announced the breakup of Wham! in the spring of 1986, destined to take place after a farewell single and album, along with a historic grand finale concert at Wembley Stadium on June 28, 1986, called The Final. The farewell single was The Edge of Heaven which reached #1 in June1986. Where Did Your Heart Go? was the group’s final single in the United States. This month marks the 30th anniversary of their first hit and slightly older guns George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley are planning to reunite for a “one-off pop extravaganza” to mark the occasion.

EARLY IS NOT ALWAYS GOOD The number of cases of girls reaching puberty early is rising across the world, with lifetsyle choices partially at blame. And that is cause for concern Anishaa Kumar anishaa.k@postnoon.com
E
very stage in life, brings a change in the way we see the world and how they in turn perceive us. For a girl, puberty brings a lot of changes. But recent studies and figures have highlighted an issue of precacious or early puberty. Normally the onset of puberty is at the age of 12-13. Recent figures are startling with the age coming down to six.
Reasons According to Dr Chitra Reddy, a Bangalore-based consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician, “One of the reasons could be nutrition. Childhood obesity is a growing problem. Children reach the ideal weight for puberty earlier. The ideal weight is around 45 kgs. This is because of the junk food eating habits. Another believed cause could be that nowadays food contains a lot of hormones. It is said that cows and chickens are being injected with hormones hence milk and chicken in many cases have a higher rate of hormones than prescribed. These levels are not monitored in our country.” Dr Divya T Sudershan, obstetrician and gynaecologist, Happy Women Clinic differs on the same. She says, “There usually isn’t any specific cause. In most cases it is idiopathic this implies that there is no specific reason. The causes could include problems such as brain tumour or certain other internal causes that result in an hormonal mixup.” Talking about studies that mention about hormones in food and childhood obesity being possible causes Dr Divya says, “Earlier people have believed that the hormones in milk and cheese could be a cause, more recent studies have refuted these claims. As far as childhood obesity is concerned, it is true that we have seen slightly overweight children entering into puberty earlier than others as obesity may increase the release of sex hor-
mones. But we cannot pinpoint this to be an exact cause.” According to a recent study that was conducted in USA one in 10 Caucasian girls aged seven-year-old are showed signs of precacious or early puberty. Talking about early puberty, Dr Chitra says, “In India as such I haven’t seen any cases of puberty as early as five, on the other hand 10-11 year olds have been seen. Earlier than that could be a one off case.” According to Dr Divya it is not that these cases that are being seen abroad are new. “There have been cases when we have heard of a six-year-old girl bearing a child so it may occur. When it comes to India, early puberty between the age of 7-8 is more common. We tend to see 2-3 cases in a year.”
Negatives Early puberty could cause various psychological and physical problems. Dr Chitra says, “Early puberty could result in a sudden growth spurt. This implies that the growth doesn’t follow the regular cycle. That is growth usually starts at the age of 10-11 and ends anytime between18-20. Then there are the various physical changes such as breast development, growth of hair etc. This in turn could increase the chances of pregnancy and sexual abuse. There is a certain social stigma
attached to it. It also affects the mental health of adolescents. The child is also not equipped to the problems associated with periods as such. It causes inconveniences as the child loses out on the childhood entitled to her. It is that time when she has just started to become serious about studies, tackling the problems associated with schooling. It is the age when children enjoy playing so handling periods and hygiene becomes difficult.” Dr Divya says, “This can be traumatic for both the child and the parent. Apart from the psychological problems it also can result in physical problems like the child may stop growing in height, be more at risk to cancer and also there will be changes in body proportions. This situation is also difficult for the child as not all her peers are going through the same changes so there is no one to understand and support her. For a mother this early onset of puberty is a sudden cause of concern. Dr Divya says, “Mothers tend to visit their gynaecologists. But we then refer them to endocrinologists who can provide medication to control the hormones. They will help slow it down till whenever it is required.”

Do you fear childbirth? You may have longer labour
OSLO: Women who fear childbirth tend to have longer labour than women who have no such fear, suggests a new research. Researchers have found that average labour duration was eight hours for women with fear of childbirth, compared to six hours and 28 minutes for women without fear. The Norwegian study looked at 2,206 women with a single pregnancy who intended to deliver vaginally. Study co-author Samantha Salvesen Adams, Health Services Research Centre, Akershus University Hospital, University of Oslo, Norway said: “Fear of childbirth seems to be an increasingly important issue in obstetric care.” “Our finding of longer duration of labour in women who fear childbirth is a new piece in the puzzle within this intersection between psychology and obstetrics,” added Adams, the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology reports. Some of the factors linked with this fear, which affects between five and 20 percent of pregnant women, include young maternal age, being a first-time mother, pre-existing psychological problems, lack of social support and a history of abuse or adverse obstetric events, according to a Akershus statement. Fear of childbirth was assessed by the Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire (W-DEQ). Women undertook the questionnaire at 32 weeks gestation and fear of childbirth was defined as a score of more than 85. Out of the total number, 165 (7.5 per cent) women scored more than 85. The average age of the participants at delivery was 30.9 years and 50.5 per cent (1,113 women) were first time mothers. Average labour duration was 8.22 hours for first-time mothers. The study also found that women with fear of childbirth more often delivered by instrumental vaginal delivery (17.0 per cent versus 10.6 per cent) or emergency caesarean delivery (10.9 per cent versus 6.8 percent) as compared to women without fear of childbirth. A
new study has found that not all calories are alike when it comes to weight loss. Researchers at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, in a small study, found that participants on a low glycaemic index diet, rich in whole grains, beans and vegetables, burned the most calories. According to Bloomberg, the experiment looked at 21 overweight men and women over seven months. The participants were separated into groups, according to USA Today, with some on low-fat diets, others on low-carbohydrate diets and lastly several on low glycaemic index diets, which stresses complex carbohydrates like beans and ancient grains. Researchers found that the low-carb diet burned more calories than did a traditional

low-fat diet, said the Los Angeles Times. It also helped to keep the weight off – a typical problem among dieters. However, the low glycaemic index diet fared best of all with even more calories burned. “From a metabolic perspective, all calories are not alike,” said study author, David Ludwig, of the Children’s Hospital Boston, according to CBC News. “The quality of the calories going in affects the quantity of the calories going out.” The low glycaemic index diet has been touted for years, most prominently by Dr. Andrew Weil, a natural health expert and bestselling author. The diet is said to resemble that of the traditional Mediterranean diet. The study was published in the journal of the American Medical Association. IANS
Buddy boost does it for you Gym Diaries Sudeshna Koka
I
n my last few columns I’ve been talking about how tough the exercises are and the dieting is. When I look at others in the gym I wonder how they train so rigorously. I mean, where do they get all that stamina from? I find it hard to do the simplest exercise, especially on days I go for my workouts without any company. But then you might remember that I have on a couple of occasions mentioned my friend ‘R’. Well Ranjani, also my colleague at work, happens to be my gym buddy and workout partner. The point is I have been to two other gyms in the last five years but promptly quit going in a maximum of 45 days. But this time it is different. I’ve been going to the gym for the last three and a half months and have not quit yet. I may not be very regular, but there is this guilty conscience that prods me to go. Looking back, I realise that it was the lack of company that made me quit the previous gyms. I mean, how boring is it to work out by yourself. Here, Ranjani is one of the reasons I have stuck on. She helped me sustain the process of gymming and eating “healthy.” When I first checked out my current gym, I was a little taken aback and didn’t feel confident enough to go by myself. That was when I got Ranjani to join the gym with me as well (she had already been going there earlier but had taken a
long break). Every evening she comes to my desk and like a school principal tells me, “Finish your work by 5pm and we’ll leave for the gym by 5.30.” She even sends me reminders on chat. Considering we both usually are given the same exercises, it helps in a great way because when I have company I am motivated. At times when she can’t make it to the gym, gosh it is so hard to make myself do all my exercises. It’s just boring. For instance, I had to do just 75 crunches and it was extremely painful. I kept taking so many breaks, but the day Ranjani and I did crunches together, we did 500 crunches (in sets of course)! That is how important to have a gym buddy. A gym buddy helps you stay focussed and vice versa. When you diet, you both can push each other, you have someone to share your misery with. A gym buddy will hang around waiting for you to finish work, just to ensure you don’t skip gym that day. They’ll help you complete your exercise routines and on occasion happily cheat and do fewer sets than asked. While you’re cycling or spending 20 minutes on the treadmill, you have your buddy to gossip with or discuss cute boys and once you finish your workout for the day, your buddy will sneak out to gorge on gol gappe with you. All said and done, having a gym buddy makes workouts more fun. And that’s how it is with me. (The writer is determined to fight the flab. Readers can inspire her at sudeshna.k@postnoon.com)
In the past, diabetes mellitus was very rare in paediatric patients. However, coinciding with the increasing prevalence of obesity among children, the incidence of diabetes in children and adolescents aged between 25-40 years has markedly increased, to the extent that it now accounts for as many as one third of all new cases of diabetes diagnosed in adolescents. The prevalence of diabetes in the paediatric population is higher among girls than boys, just as the prevalence is higher among adult females than it is in adult males. The major risk factors for diabetes in young persons are as follows n Obesity and inactivity, which are important contributors to insulin resistance n Family history of type 2 diabetes in first- and second-degree relatives n Maternal gestational diabetes or type 2 diabetes n Stressful lifestyle especially in younger age groups. Commonly patient presents with following symptoms n Numbness, burning, prickling or tingling sensations in the hands, feet and extremities n Feelings of extreme sensitivity to touch, where even the slightest touch can cause severe pain
n Atrophy or wasting in the muscles of the hands or feet n Insensitivity to temperature n Sharp pains and muscle cramps or uncontrolled muscle twitching visible under the skin n Affecting to the Nerves controlling other internal organs of the body like heart and blood vessels, lungs, digestive system, glandular tissues, the urinary tract, sexual organs, sweat glands and certain nerves in the eyes are most commonly affected. Homoeopathic approach: Homoeopathic approach for Diabetes mellitus is strictly individualising every single case, analysing the physical as well as mental constitutional symptoms and selecting Genetic constitutional homoeopathic remedy. If homoeopathic treatment is opted for at the earlier stage of borderline type 2 diabetes it helps partial functioning pancreas to function fully and prevent further diabetes to progress and in long standing diabetes it regulates the sugar level and prevent complication to reach the stages like diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy, non healing diabetic ulcers, amputation. Certainly with homoeopathic medicine the quality of life of the patients of diabetics have improved tremendously, as homoeopathy works in enhancing the natural defensive mechanism of the body.

hen John Galliano was let go from the post of Creative Director of Dior after 15 years, it was tough for any designer to fill his shoes, considering the sensibility left by the designer. Bill Gaytten who had worked with Galliano at Dior stepped up and created collections which were very much reminiscent of the brand’s founding aesthetics as well as that of Galliano’s. The Couture 2012 collection was Bill’s second and last collection for the brand, before designer Raf Simons joins Dior as the creative director. Crisp dresses in sheer fabric, tulle full skirt gowns, ruffled skirts and classic Dior black dresses, Bill Gaytten created a couture show that seamlessly blends in the brand’s long-standing couture style. Colours of grey, black, and crème with hints of red and purple made this a completely satisfying collection for the Dior client.

What is haute couture? The words when translated from French mean “high fashion”. But what collections can be deemed as ‘haute couture’ is a bit more complicated than that. The term haute couture is protected by law in France and is defined by the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Paris that determines which fashion houses are eligible to be true haute couture houses. Their rules state that only "those companies mentioned on the list drawn up each year by a commission domiciled at the Ministry for Industry are entitled to avail themselves" of the term haute couture. arl Lagerfeld is the ultimate futuristic-traditional designer. He takes brands with great tradition and spins their culture into something super modern. His new collection was showcased in a spaceship aircraft kind of a set up, clearly hinting that this collection will be out of the world. Elongated necklines on the tweed jackets, gravity defying hairstyles, trousers with pockets on the front thighs: the Chanel girl was travelling to a location this year that seemed to not be on any of the seven continents. The shift dresses and below the knee skirts reflected the brand’s founder Coco Chanel’s aesthetic made in colours like metallic black and blues.

hen designer Valentino Garavani retired in 2008, he left the designer’s job in the capable hands of designer duo Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri. Pier and Maria were working for Valentino’s accessories line before their title as the creative directors for the couture and ready-to-wear. The change from the legendary designer’s style to the younger accessory designers aesthetic was noticeable but welcomed by the audience. This change made the brand appeal more to the younger clientele while providing the classic pieces the loyal clientele wanted when coming to Valentino. This couture collection was a modern redemption of classic elegance. The duo has this strength of making diaphanous gowns and classic silhouette dresses seem effortless and easy to wear, even when made for a couture show.

he Lebanese designer is known for his couture dresses that are a favourite of celebrities to wear on the red carpet. Aishwarya Rai has famously worn some stunning Elie Saab gowns at the Cannes film festival before. His aesthetics are drawn to couture like garments – for his couture show and even ready-to-wear shows. This collection was no exception with ethereal full-length gowns in shades of peach, lime, yellow, pink and blue. The dusty pastel palette translated his vision of a light and breezy season and made for perfect dresses to wear for a summer wedding.

erhaps the youngest couture label to show a haute couture collection is the one by Italian designer Giambattista Valli. The designer is recognised for his vibrant colours and flamboyant silhouettes. A fan of the flower motif, the collection for Couture 2012 embodied the pink and red floral prints and patterns on the flouncy fabrics. The show opened with muted black and white shade skirts, short dresses, and coats and gradually transcended into bolder pieces of full length dresses in black, hot pink, maroon and red.

B
ad luck continues to haunt Samantha in the Tamil film industry. After losing Mani Ratnam’s Kadal, the latest buzz in Kollywood is that she might lose Shankar’s upcoming film I as well. Few days ago, when Shankar officially announced details about the romantic thriller, he didn’t mention Samantha’s name in the blog. Although he was in talks with Samantha for quite sometime, sources say that she couldn’t allocate required dates since she hadn’t recovered from her illness. Moreover, all her upcoming Telugu films including Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu and Siddharth’s film require her dates on a priority basis. Due to these two reasons, she has been losing out on big projects which came her way earlier this year.

undeep Kishan and Varun Sandesh are teaming up for the first time for a crime comedy. The film has been officially titled as Dopidi and sources say that the story is set in the backdrop of a bank robbery. Melanie Kannokada, who was recently seen in Love, Lies and Seeta, is playing the lead role in the film. Siraj Kalla, a protege of Raj & DK, is directing the film and for the past few days, the film is being shot in several locations in Hyderabad. After directing films like Flavours, 99 and Shor in the City, Raj & DK are producing thefilm. “For years, our friends and family have been asking us to make a Telugu film. It’s been on our minds forever too, since we grew up on a diet of Telugu films! So when Siraj approached us during the filming of Shor with this idea, we thought it was a terrific film to launch our production in Telugu. This film appeals to our sensibilities and is the kind of film our production company would like to nurture and foster. We loved the script and kept laughing through it, and we believe the audiences will love it too!” Rajand DK said.

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

H
ome of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and The Championships, Wimbledon is ideally suited to hosting one of the biggest tennis tournaments the UK has ever seen. Located in south-west London near Richmond Park and the
the grass courts of Wimbledon, which has its own Games history. The venue staged the Tennis competition when London first hosted the Games in 1908, with Great Britain winning all six gold medals.
The basics Players hit a ball over the net into their opponents’ half. The object is to score points by playing the ball so that it cannot be returned over the net within the boundary lines. The first three points in a game are noted as 15, 30 and 40, with the next point winning the game. A score of 40–40 is called deuce, and from that score two consecutive points must be won. Matches consist of sets, which are decided by the first to six games and must be won by at least two clear games.
Competition format The tournament is a knockout format, with the winners of the semi-finals in each event going head-to-head on Centre Court for the gold medals. There are 16 seeded players in each Singles event, eight seeded teams in the men’s and women’s Doubles, and four seeded teams in the Mixed Doubles. Seedings are determined by world rankings.
Officials An umpire is in charge of the match, ensuring that the rules of the game are observed and calling out the score after each point. He/she is assisted by line umpires, who keep an eye on whether the ball lands in or out of the court.
WIMBLEDON World Herita-ge Site of Kew Gardens, Wimbledon is the only remaining major grass-court tennis venue in the world. The club covers more than 42 acres in total, and features 19 grass courts, six American Clay courts and five indoor courts.
Wimbledon’s Centre Court was opened in 1922, and is one of the most fa-
mous courts in the world. It has been updated over the last few years, with the addition of improved stands and a retractable roof. Before and after The Champions-hips, temporary facilities will be installed in preparation for the 2012 Games.

PHELPS GETS 4TH BERTH Rebecca Bryan
OMAHA, NEBRASKA: Michael Phelps secured a fourth straight Olympic berth in the 200m butterfly on Thursday, cruising to victory at the US trials in an event he has long dominated. Phelps, who has held the world record in the 200m fly since he first broke it at the age of 15 in 2001, will have a chance at a third straight gold medal in the event at the London Games. Trailing Davis Tarwater at the first two turns, Phelps turned it on heading into the final turn and powered home to win by a body length in 1min 53.65sec. “It’s not a good enough time to win a gold medal, but I think I’m OK with it,” Phelps said, although it was the fastest time posted so far this Olympic season. Behind him, Tyler Clary won a furious race for second place — and the other London Games berth on offer — rallying to claim second in 1:55.12 ahead of Bobby Bollier and Tarwater. Clary, who missed out on a trip to London as he finished third in the 400m medley behind Ryan Lochte and Phelps, pounded the water in celebration when he saw he was headed to the Olympics. “It was amazing,” Clary said. “I can’t even put into words how the end of that race felt, not only the pain in
the last 20 meters but just the complete and total turnaround. “I’m on cloud nine right now,” he said. Phelps stayed on track to repeat the eight-race programme he swam in Beijing, where he won an unprecedented eight gold medals in one Games to take his tally of gold to 14. Midway through the eight-day selection meeting he has qualified in the 400m medley, 200m freestyle and 200m fly, with the 100m fly and 200m medley still to come and three relay spots likely on the cards. “That was the best my stroke’s felt throughout the meet,” said Phelps, who has stepped up his training after a post-Beijing lull.
That was the best my stroke’s felt throughout the meet. I’m pleased, but I think I need to go faster if I want to win that at the Olympics. Michael Phelps, swimmer “In all I’m pleased, but I think I need to go faster if I want to win that at the Olympics. “I was just thinking about it today, this is my fourth Olympic Games in
this event, so it’s special to me ... I have a couple of weeks to perfect some things that I’m going to need if I want to end with a good one.” Allison Schmitt, who trains with Phelps and coach Bob Bowman at North Baltimore, added another race to her Olympic programme, winning the 200m freestyle in 1:54.40. That’s the fastest in the world this year, improving on the 1:54.66 posted by France’s Camille Muffat. “I didn’t feel like I was on my [American] record pace, but I could hear the crowd. I was pretty excited before I even looked up and saw the time,” said Schmitt, who won the 400m free earlier this week.
Glen Rupp ups the ante at US trials Jim Slater
EUGENE, OREGON: Glen Rupp won his second title of the US Olympic Track and Field Trials, adding the 5,000 meters crown to his 10,000 triumph Thursday and shattering the meet record of legend Steve Prefontaine. And two African-born standouts, former world champion and two-time Olympic medalist Bernard Lagat and 2008 US flag bearer Lopez Lomong, also booked berths in London,
where host-nation hero and reigning world champion Mo Farah awaits. Rupp outfought Lagat in the final 100 meters to win win 13mins 22.67secs, breaking the 40-year-old meet record of 13:22.80 set by the late Prefontaine, an icon in track-mad Eugene who died at age 24 in a 1975 car crash. Rupp will double in the 10,000 after winning that event on the opening night of the meet, which continues through Sunday. Farah has this year’s world-best time of 12:56.98 from a Diamond League victory.
John Barnes backs Beckham’s Team GB omission LONDON: Former England winger John Barnes said it was right David Beckham had been left out of the Great Britain squad for the London 2012 Olympics as his inclusion would have “belittled” the Games. Beckham, 37, revealed in a statement on Thursday he’d failed to be selected as one of manager Stuart Pearce’s three over-age players. Pearce, himself an ex-England full-back, had travelled to the United States to assess Beckham’s form for the Los Angeles Galaxy last week before making his decision. “If you look at it from the point of view of winning the Olympics, then Stuart will know what he wants from his team,” Barnes told BBC Radio 5 Live. “The Olympics is about winning and you’re belittling that if you say let’s throw a spectacle by picking someone more popular. That belittles the Olympic ideal of excellence. “It’s supposed to be about the pinnacle of someone’s career. You have to pick the best team. Come on, this is the Olympics. It’s a meritocracy and an athlete should be there on merit.”

Russia and Spain fined over racist fans
Poles who get reflected glory from seeing Germany’s Polishborn Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski in action overcame the gloom of their idols’ Euro 2012 exit, saying Italy deserved their gutsy 2-1 semi-final win. With co-hosts Poland having failed to advance from the group stage at the championship, some fans transferred their loyalty to the next best thing to a home team.
Russia’s costly Euro 2012 championship continued on Thursday as their federation was fined 30,000 euros for the racist behaviour of some of their fans in the Group A game with the Czech Republic. UEFA also imposed a 20,000 euros fine on the Spanish federation for their fans racist chants at Italy’s Mario Balotelli during the Group C clash.
Italian flair trumps German industry
Balotelli conquers man’s world, finally Barnaby Chesterman
M
ario Balotelli finally delivered on his promise as he took centre-stage in the biggest match of his young life to send Italy into the Euro 2012 final against Spain on Sunday. The Azzurri proved once again they have the Indian sign on Germany as a superb double by Balotelli saw them to a 2-1 win — the third time they have beaten Die Mannschaft in a major tournament semi-final.
They are now unbeaten in eight competitive matches against Germany and the enigmatic 21-year-old Balotelli was the major reason for that. What made it special was that his adoptive mother was in the stands and whom he embraced at the end. “My mother was in the stadium and my father was watching it on television,” said Balotelli. I scored two goals in front of my mother and I would like to score four in front of my father in Kiev in the final!”
Germans weren’t clever enough, admits Lahm Ryland James Ryland James
WARSAW: Striker Mario Balotelli struck twice to seal Italy’s 2-1 semi-final win over Germany on Thursday to leave the Germans’ Euro 2012 ambitions in tatters while the Azzurri march on to the final. The 21-year-old Manchester City star broke German hearts with a first-half header and sublime strike as Joachim Loew’s inexperienced team — the youngest of the 16 at Euro 2012 — failed to cope with Cesare
Prandelli’s street-wise Italians. A late penalty from Mesut Ozil proved no more than a consolation score for the Germans whose 16-year wait for a major title continues. Italy are now into Sunday’s final in Kiev to face defending champions Spain with the Italians bidding to win their first European crown since 1968. Man-of-the-match Andrea Pirlo was again superb for the Italians, as the 33-year-old Juventus star had been in the quarter-final win over England.
“We played exactly how we had wanted to,” said Prandelli. “We managed to make life hard for Germany, we have Riccardo Montolivo to thank for that. “Spain are the favourites, but we proved that we have a strong team.” Victory at Warsaw’s National Stadium means Italy maintain their impressive record of having never lost to Germany at a World Cup or European Championships on their eighth meeting at a major tournament.
G
ermany captain Philipp Lahm has admitted they were not “clever enough” after Joachim Loew’s team was found wanting in their 2-1 Euro 2012 semi-final defeat to Italy. It ensured their trophy drought dating back to Euro ‘96 would last at least another two years to the 2014 World Cup should they qualify. Italy striker Mario Balotelli broke German hearts on Thursday with a first-half header and sublime strike as the
inexperienced Germans — the youngest of the 16 teams at Euro 2012 — failed to cope with Cesare Prandelli’s Italy. Germany had a faint lifeline when Mesut Ozil converted a 92nd-minute penalty.

Nadal shocked by Rosol Wimbledon 2012 engulfed in cheating, sexism storm very happy but it was just the second round, I was a long way from the final,” said Nadal. Earlier on Thursday, Wimbledon had been engulfed by scandal with Ivo Karlovic accusing officials of cheating him out of victory against home hope Andy Murray and Gilles Simon refusing to back down in the equal prize money row. “I feel cheated. On a Grand Slam, Centre Court,” said 33-year-old Karlovic. And, Simon, who has never got beyond the quarter-finals of any Grand Slam, was lambasted by Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, two of the women’s game’s superstars, after they had secured their places in the last 32, for his stand on equal prize money. “No matter what anyone says, or the criticisms that we get, despite everything else, I’m sure there are a few more people that watch my matches than his, so...,” said Sharapova in an ice-cold put down. Williams backed up her title rival saying, “She’s way hotter than he is.”

LONDON: Rafael Nadal crashed to his worst Grand Slam defeat in seven years on Thursday when Czech journeyman Lukas Rosol, the world number 100, pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Wimbledon history. After a day when the sleepy All England Club had been rocked by allegations of cheating and sexism, it was the unknown Rosol who delivered the final, late night, earth-shattering blow. Rosol, whose only other five visits to Wimbledon had ended in first round losses in qualifying, stunned the 2008 and 2010 champion, and 11-time Grand Slam title winner Nadal, 6-7 (9/11), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round. It was a remarkable upset as Nadal slumped to his earliest exit at a major since the same stage of the 2005 Wimbledon championship when he was beaten by Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller. “It’s painful to lose tonight, I’m not
Graceless Nadal writes off giantkiller James LONDON: Rafael Nadal wrote off his sensational Wimbledon loss to Lukas Rosol as an accident of sport and challenged the Czech, ranked 100 in the world, to make any further headway in the tournament. Nadal said he doubted if the Czech could repeat his heroics in the rest of the tournament which begins with a last 32 clash against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber. Ironically, it was Kohlschreiber who knocked Nadal out of the Halle grasscourt event at the quarter-final stage in the run-up
to Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Lukas Rosol admitted he was surprised by Rafael Nadal’s uncharacteristic shoulder charge in the third set of his stunning second round triumph over the great Spaniard. Nadal had become clearly irritated by Rosol’s constant movement during his service motion and made his anger clear to the umpire. After the Czech had broken for a 2-1 lead in the third set, the two players collided at the changeover.
SPORT SNIPPETS Serena wants someone to say it with flowers Former Wimbledon champion Serena Williams pleaded to her fans on Thursday to put her smile on her face by sending her roses, pink ones ideally. “I haven’t gotten any flowers in a really long time from someone of the opposite sex that doesn’t have to do with business,” sighed the American star after her second round victory over Melinda Czink. “When I did get flowers I didn’t appreciate ‘em, so... I love roses. I love red roses. I love white roses. I love pink roses. Pink is my favourite colour. Anything with a rose. I hope I didn’t start anything.”
Nishikori vows to emulate idol Matsuoka Kei Nishikori vowed to repeat Shuzo Matsuoka’s epic run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after becoming the first Japanese man to reach the third round for 17 years. Nishikori crushed France’s Florent Serra 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday to emulate his hero Matsuoka, who was the last Japanese man to get to the last 32 back in 1995 and has also played a key role in the 22-year-old’s development. Nishikori was beginning to fall in love with the sport when he attended the “Shuzo Challenge” tennis camp run by Matsuoka. That cemented Nishikori’s desire to follow in Matsuoka’s footsteps.

Champ Kvitova races into third round LONDON: Defending champion Petra Kvitova fired a warning to her Wimbledon title rivals as the Czech raced into the third round with a 6-0, 6-4 demolition of Britain's Elena Baltacha on Thursday. On her arrival at the All England Club last week, Kvitova admitted she wasn't in the best form to retain the Venus Rosewater Dish after losing in the first round of the Wimbledon warm-up at Eastbourne. But the 22-year-old, who defeated Maria Sharapova in last year's Wimbledon final, erased those doubts in convincing style in

the evening sunshine on Court Two. Fourth seeded Kvitova, who faces America's Varvara Lepchenko for a place in the last 16, won 10 games in a row to take complete control before the out-classed Baltacha finally got on the scoreboard. Baltacha conceded in the build-up that she probably had no chance of shocking Kvitova if the Czech was on top form. The first set passed by in a flurry of Kvitova winners from the baseline and the second was heading the same way until the world number four eased up with the finish line in sight.

Van Pelt leads pack at ATT BETHESDA, MARYLAND: Bo Van Pelt fired a bogey-free four-under 67 to seize a one-shot lead after the opening round of the ATT National on Thursday at the Congressional Country Club course. “I got off to a good start,” Van Pelt said. “I thought 10 through 14 I had hit a bunch of good shots and had some good birdie looks and didn’t make any, and about a 25-footer for par on 15 that I made, just kind of kept my round going. “When you make a putt like that, it just kind of gives you a little bit of momentum, you feel like you might make some putts today.” American Van Pelt made the best of some difficult conditions Thursday. He holed out from the fairway for an eagle on a day when just seven players managed to post scores in the 60s. Tiger Woods wasn’t one of those as he settled for a one-over 72. The average score was about 73.5. Three-time major winner Vijay Singh, Brendon De Jonge and Jimmy Walker were tied for second at threeunder 68, while Pat Perez, Jason Day

Leipheimer eyes Tour podium place Armstrong blasts dope case WASHINGTON: Lance Armstrong has stepped up his attack on the US Anti-Doping Agency, saying the credibility of its case against him has been undermined by the fact that two key witnesses are self-confessed dope cheats. Armstrong, a 7-time Tour de France champion, questioned the credibility of Floyd Landis and Tyler Hamilton, his former teammates, in a letter to USADA on Wednesday.

LIEGE, BELGIUM: American Levi Leipheimer is hoping he can negotiate the pitfalls on this year’s Tour de France and use his strong time trialling skills to
secure a second podium spot. Leipheimer, who finished third in 2007 behind Alberto Contador of Spain and Australian runner-up Cadel Evans, is spearheading Omega-Pharma’s bid for a top finish in the general classification. And while he acknowledges Britain’s Bradley Wiggins and reigning champion Evans begin as the rightful favourites, he believes he has what it takes to cause a surprise. Admitting the course suits him, Leipheimer said, “But there’s a lot of traps and pitfalls, you have to be careful to pass all those tests. There’s over 100km of TT (time trials), we haven’t had that in a few years.”
Haroon Lorgat on Thursday admitted spot-fixing scandals were a low point of his tenure — but insisted the sport was now in better shape to fight corruption. Lorgat, who handed over to new International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive David Richardson in Kuala Lumpur, said the sport’s response to its worst betting controversy in years would act as a deterrent to cheats. “It’s a lowlight, but in the manner we responded we demonstrated we will not tolerate any form of corruption and that we’re going to pursue it to a logical conclusion,” the South African told AFP. Three Pakistani players were jailed in England over the spot-fixing affair after they were caught arranging no-balls to order during the 2010 Test series against England. The ICC also ordered all its members to uphold a lifetime ban slapped on Pakistan’s Danish Kaneria. AFP
Indian eves lose to England again
CHELMSFORD: The Indian women’s cricket team suffered its second successive defeat to England women as it lost the second Twenty20 match by eight wickets here today. Batting first after winning the toss, India were bundled out for 114 in exactly 20 overs, and England chased down the target with 17 balls to spare at the County Ground. England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Sarah Taylor continued her good run of form with the bat, top-scoring with a 48-ball unbeaten 67, in the hosts’ 117 for two. Harmanpreet Singh (in pic) topped scored for India with 34 off 38 balls while skipper Mithali Raj made 21 in 18 balls. While Harmanpreet hit a four and a six, Mithali struck three boundaries during her cameo. But the Indian batting once again failed as a unit and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Taylor then led England’s riposte in style, hitting nine fours. She was ably supported by Lydia Greenway who remained not out on 30 off 31 balls. Katherine Brunt (3/18) was the best English bowler.
