MEANING OF LOVE Michael Haneke’s Amour was the most-talked-about film at Cannes this year and the jury’s decision to give it the Palme d’Or didn’t come as a big surprise. Nevertheless, there were quite a few other films which got rave reviews. Postnoon recommends 10 films, screened at the Cannes Film Festival this year, which you shouldn’t miss. young Imam has been put behind bars on the charge of killing his second wife. Shaik Ayub alias Abdulrahman, of Dharmabad in Adilabad district, allegedly killed Yasmeen Begum by strangulating her in bed a few days ago. She was barely 24 years old and the couple had been married for only nine months. The incident came as a shocker for the village and people gathered in large numbers demanding that the Imam be sentenced to death, as he had defamed the community and holy script. The sarpanch and others plan to boycott the family for such an inhuman act. The reason for the crime is said to be dowry. Yasmeen who father Shaikh
Babu, a daily wage labourer and father of six daughters, could not meet the Imam’s dowry demands. It is alleged that Ayub had been demanding five grams of gold and Rs10,000 in cash immediately. Knowing her
father’s financial position, Yasmeen repeatedly pleaded with Ayub that her father could not afford to meet his demands. A heated argument ensued which resulted in Ayub beating up Yasmeen.
CCS monitors internet for communal messages
CRIME Rahul Ramakrishna rahul.r@postnoon.com
F
ollowing the recent communal clashes in Madannapet and Saidabad in the Old City, there has been a steep rise in the number of hate messages posted on websites and social media networks. Furthermore, unhindered access to Youtube saw an increase in mob and riot footage modified with religious narratives being uploaded to provoke religious sentiments. In the light of this, the Central Crime Station (CCS)
has stepped up its efforts to monitor the internet for signs of trouble. Two days ahead of Hanuman Jayanthi, a complaint against the derogatory material posted on the internet was lodged with the Hussainialam police station. During the Madannapet riots, the cyber crime wing of the CCS succeeded in removing over 30 objectionable messages from Facebook and Youtube. However glorious their endeavour might seem, the CCS are yet to apprehend those involved in spreading hatred online. As per the latest statistics from the National Records Bureau, there have been only 105 cyber crimes in AP, of which one third are related to hacking, fraud and cheating. There are hardly any cases of criminals provoking religious hatred that figure in the NCB. Ramesh Venkat, a freelance hacker and IT solutions consultant, says, “The current state of cyber policing is laughable. Despite their claims, the police are too ill-equipped to track a person’s identity online and take him/her into custody. Communal hatred is common on social forums. Even today, Youtube is filled with the most provocative videos of the Babri Masjid demolition, the Gujarat riots edited with narrations from Holy Scriptures. They instigate people.” When contacted, the CCS police were busy with the bandobast but off the record, they admit that much of the mischief goes unpunished, which throws light on the current state of affairs.
Last week, Ayub beat up Yasmeen and eventually strangled her to death. Following this, his family and he informed her parents that she had died of an electric shock, said deputy superintendent of police BN Devidas. When the incident came to light, Madhool circle inspector Srinivas booked a murder case against the Imam and he was taken into police custody for further investigation. Incidentally, Ayub has two children from his earlier marriage. His first wife left him after suffering torture. She even lodged a police complaint against Ayub’s cruelty and demanded that he be arrest. The case is still pending. Devidas said the ‘Imam’ misguided the girl’s family saying that she would make unreasonable demands for things he could not afford. He even alleged that she had gone astray and her family believed him.

For the past three days, their freedom of movement was curtailed and shop owners have lost a lot of business. They had to content with hoards of uniformed men with or without weapons eyeing them suspiciously. On Monday evening, they sighed in relief. Jagan being taken to prison has ended their trouble. “I had a hard time convincing cops to let me go to my house yesterday. I called up my son on phone and asked him to get me. Even then I was forced to park my vehicle on Nampally main road and walk home,” said Mohammed Junaid Mustafa, who resides bang opposite the main gate of the court. BI’s counsel informed the special court on Monday that the former CM late YS Rajasekhar Reddy had fully cooperated with his son Jagan Mohan Reddy in his illegitimate deals. Presenting the CBI’s case after producing Jagan, whom it arrested on Sunday evening, the agency’s counsel said that Jagan’s replies to their interrogation were not satisfactory and explained that this was the reason why he was arrested. CBI has charged that Jagan’s companies had received money on a large scale through hawala transactions. Stating that `140 crore has come into Jagan’s companies through this method. Stating that the CBI has interrogated 74 accused in the assets case, the agency informed the court that every one of them had said that the ultimate beneficiary was Jagan. The counsel also alleged that through the Vanpic deal, the State lost `300 crore. Stating that there was a need for getting more information from Jagan, CBI sought custody of Jagan for 14 days for further interrogation. The agency said that so far, they had found that Jagan benefited by about `1,200 crore through illegitimate deals. Charging Jagan of building an empire of thousands of crores, CBI said that he got `140 crore to his Sandoor Power, from Asian Infra of Luxemburg. CBI said that there was the possibility of Jagan tampering with evidence if he was let out. NSS

Jagan’s woes are his own making: CM Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
T
he Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday regretted ‘politicising’ Jagan Mohan Reddy’s arrest by the CBI on Sunday in the disproportionate assets case. He denounced the emotional outbursts of Jagan’s mother Vijaya Lakshmi who blamed the Congress leadership for all ills the family faced. “Both the Central as well as the State governments have no role in his arrest in the disproportionate assets cases. In fact, these cases have been initiated based on the directive of the courts,” Kiran said. The chief minister said that Vijaya Lakshmi’s intention in seeking to dig up the issue of YSR’s death in a helicopter crash was to gain political
mileage before the June 12 by-elections to the 18 Assembly seats and one parliamentary constituency. The CM threw a challenge at the YSR family that if it would present fresh evidence of any mysterious happening that led to the helicopter crash, his government would order a fresh inquiry. Asked if the government had any plan to defend the Cabinet ministers who are under notice by the CBI in the controversial government order cases, Kiran answered in the affirmative. “The government may consider supporting all those ministers who have been issued notices by the CBI on the issue of government orders,” he said. But this was no carte blanche and it all depends on the legal opinion the government receives. The Chief Minister refused to be drawn into many political issues concerning his government.

he steep hike in petrol prices is having a cascading effect on the prices of commodities and is burning a hole in many a pockets. With monthly budgets skyrocketing and savings dipping, many people are feeling the pinch. An added burden that most City parents are now facing is the hike in fares of autos that ferry children to school. Parents now have to shell out at least 30 per cent more to have their children dropped at and picked up from school by autos. “We stay in the Old City area and the school buses don’t ply on this route. We need to hire local autos to pick up and drop our kids for school each day. Every year, the autowallahs increase the fares by `100 or `150, but this time it is the limit. I used to pay `800 every month and now it has increased to `1,200. Searching for another auto is a big task as autowallahs rarely prefer coming to this side of the City,” said Narender Singh whose child is a class IX student of Naryana School. The case is far worse for M Laxmi who works as a maid. “My daughter, Keerti, studies in class IV in a government school in Khairatabad. Since her school doesn’t have bus facility we are forced to send her by an auto and the fare is higher than her school
fees itself. Earlier I used to pay `1,000 every month and now I need to pay `1,300. The autowallah initially increased the fare to `1,500, but after a lot of pleading and bargaining, he agreed for `1,300. “My husband is a daily wage worker and with these skyrocketing prices it is tough for us to manage the household on such a tight budget,” she said. The rates just seem to go
higher in the more upmarket areas, making matters worse for parents residing there. “My daughter goes for IIT coaching in Ashok Nagar from Banjara Hills and we send her by auto. We’re already paying the driver `2,000 per month and now he is hinting at a hike of nearly `1,000 from June onwards. We don’t have a choice but to give in to his demands,” said Sunitha Raj, a homemaker.
ICONIC CITY Universal Bakery
I
n today’s world where people are obsessed with mall shopping, food courts and high end eateries, places like Universal Bakery still hold their ground. Universal Bakery on MG Road in Secunderabad has been around for decades and has been a must-stop for so many families. Universal Bakery has many items that have made it a legend in the City. Their burgers are loaded with mayonnaise sauce and both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian burgers have been a huge hit. Their pizzas, stuffed

buns, rolls, chicken drumsticks among other items deserve a special mention. Universal is also famous for cakes, pastries, macaroons, jam tarts and cookies and tarts. Their chocolate and black forest cakes are just out of this world. The reason why Universal Bakery is still successful in today’s age of cafe’s and posh bakeries is that it has maintained its quality and also their portions are very generous. he Parsis in Hyderabad are said to have come to the City during the reign of Nizam III and Nizam IV. Apart from their contribution to business in Hyderabad, the community is also known for it’s philanthropic activities in the City. For more than two centuries, the twin cities have been home for more than 1,200 Parsi families. “The Parsis in the country are mainly spread in Gujarat and Mumbai. However, a small portion is present in Hyderabad too. In addition to the regional festivals Navroze is a grand affair for us,” said Vachha Barius, member of Zoroastrian Club. “Earlier Navroze use to be a traditional affair with family and friends celebrating it at home but now it has become a community event. More and more people from the community gather at the fire temples” he adds.

The Bai Maneckbai Nusserwanji Chenoy Fire Temple building on Tilak Nagar also won the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) now Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) — Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Heritage Award in 2001. In fact the fire temple on
Tilak Nagar stands on a piece of land bought by the Chenoy family in an auction in 1890. “The temple is named after Maneckbai Chenoy, as she initiated the project to construct the temple after the Parsis in Hyderabad expressed difficulty in taking the long journey to Secunderabad fire temple” said, KK Irani, member of Zoroastrian Club. “My grandfather use to say that he used to travel for more than one hour on bullock carts and horsedriven tongas, to visit the fire temple in Secunderabad during his days,” said Sashika Batliwala, daughter of K Batliwala, resident of Abids.
Business and Marriages Most of the Parsis have their busi-
ness in Secunderabad and Abids area of the City. Be it the famous Chermas shopping centre, Hollywood footwear or bakeries, the Parsis have made their presence felt. The Chenoys were known for their philanthropic work in the City. The community members are particular about marriages. They prefer to marry within their own community however in the past there were cases of Parsi girls marrying into other community and not being able to cope. Hence to ease the marriage process the community have also started matrimonial meets among the community members. Zoroastrian Club is the main hub of the Parsis in the City. The club

mnesty International has expressed concern over the killing of around 250 people in the ongoing clashes between maoists and security forces in central and eastern states this year. The Amnesty International Annual report – 2012 released by State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) stated that clashes continued between armed naxals and security forces in the states including Chhattisgarh, adivasi areas of Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
“The courts sentenced at least 110 people to death during 2011, but for the seventh successive year no execution took place” said, K Peda Peri Reddy, in charge chairman, AP SHRC while releasing the report. The report provided documentation of various rights violations in over 155 countries, said Reddy. “The UN should evolve appropriate mechanisms to make national governments accountable for the violations identified by organisations.” The report said both sides— maoists and Police — have targeted civilians, mainly adivasis and engaged in killings, abductions and arson. In Chhattisgarh, more than 3,000 people including combatants had been killed in the clashes since 2005, while 25,000 people remained
displaced and 5,000 people remained in the camps. Observing that the Union Government maintained its focus on economic growth at the cost of protecting and promoting human rights in the country and abroad, the report mentioned that adivasi communities intensified their protests against corporate- led moves to acquire and mine their lands without prior consent resulting in the suspension of some industrial projects. It felt that institutional mechanism meant to protect rights were weak and judiciary processes were slow in ensuring justice. It recorded that the courts sentenced 110 people to death in 2011, but for the seventh year, no execution took place.

aire Mikhail Fridman on Monday resigned as chief of BP’s Russian joint venture in a surprise decision that threw one of the British giant’s most profitable operations into turmoil. The tycoon’s departure as TNK-BP boss came just seven months after he had been confirmed to the post for two years following a bruising board battle between the venture’s local and British partners. That strife had already forced BP to abandon its historic Arctic tie-up with the Russian state champion Rosneft and brought shareholder calls at BP for the resig-
nation of the group’s US chief Bob Dudley. But Fridman’s confirmation by both TNK-BP’s local and British owners appeared to put the dispute behind them and set Russia’s number three oil firm on an even footing. TNK-BP kept its announcement of Fridman’s resignation to just a few terse sentences that failed to explain his logic or the company’s immediate plans. TNK-BP has had a turbulent history that reflects the trouble Western majors have had in making progress under the tough rules imposed during the 12-year domination of President Vladimir Putin.

ew reality projects above 4,000 sq m are almost at a standstill due to the government policy to reserve 20 per cent area of layout area for economically weaker sections (EWS) and lower income group (LIG) persons. The GO is applicable in major municipal corporation areas and urban development authorities. The City reality market which is showing positive signs. For last few years, due to political agitation, unsold stock and the GO 45 for EWS and LIG, the sector was at a low, said R Chalapathi Rao, vice-president, AP Real Estate Developers Association. During the real estate boom, major national players have constructed multi-storey and multi-block apartments. This had created ample supply in the market. Unfortunately, none of them got fully occupied or fully sold which is being absorbed in recent months. The GO 45 and political agitations in the City has pushed the market growth in other small towns. The market their does not require swathes and realtors can limit the projects to the ones involving less than one acre, he said. Talking about the viability of the project, he said each project caters to specified economic class. Even the governmentdeveloped areas like housing board, with separate blocks

each catering to higher income groups (HIG), middle income groups (MIG) and lower income groups (LIG). It is impossible to construct for these sections in the same building because of the size of the units. The weaker sections may require unit areas of average 250 sq ft. However, the normal buyers’ flat sizes may vary from 1,500-2,000 sq ft, he points out. Each developer has to construct a separate building adjacent to the main building. The smaller the construction size, the higher the costs for the realtors. This also creates disproportion in the number of flats, the flats which are catered to the weaker sections will be more in number than actual flats sold to the general public. This compo-
sition is terrifying to the realtors. If the government had asked 20 per cent of the flats in number, this would have created right proportion in creating shelter to the people such as maids and drivers, who are dependent on the residents of the apartment, he said. Though the government started this initiative keeping inclusive growth in mind, the practicality and viability of scheme was not looked at. Few realtors are going ahead, leaving 20 per cent of the area for these sections. However, they are postponing construction for a later time to get the GO cleared. However, this will take longer construction periods and will cause them to lose opportunities and spike costs, he added.
ILO elects Briton Guy Ryder as new chief
GENEVA: The International Labour Organization (ILO) on Monday elected former trade union leader Guy Ryder as the new head of the agency, succeeding Juan Somavia, its chief of 13 years. Briton Ryder is the ILO’s current number two and was widely expected to take over the top spot at the UN agency which draws up and monitors international labour standards. The Liverpudlian, a former ge-
neral secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, beat eight other candidates including ex-French minister Gilles de Robien who came second in the six-round vote at the ILO headquarters in Geneva. In a speech after the vote, Ryder said he was “profoundly grateful” to have been chosen and paid tribute to Somavia, describing him as a “giant” in the history of the ILO. Alluding to his union background, he pledged to promote the views of all the ILO parties, while also pursuing the body’s goal of social justice at a time when the world of work “remains in crisis.” “Our duty to the poorest and the most vulnerable must be paramount in the journey ahead,” Ryder said. ^cm

DHARAMSALA:
“He’s my boss,” the Dalai Lama said last week of Tibetan Prime Ministerin-exile Lobsang Sangay, adding “Although, when it comes to spiritual affairs, I’m still his boss.” He made the remark while introducing Sangay, democratically elected to the office last year, to the press in Austrian capital Vienna. “This young man was born in India, but completed his education at Harvard University,” he said. “Since the Tibetan prime minister was first elected in 2001, I have been semi-retired. But after Lobsang Sangay was elected last year, I thought the time was right. So I retired completely and handed my political responsibilities to him,” he added. The 76-year-old Dalai Lama’s journey to shed political and administrative powers began May 29 last year when he signed a legislative measure after over two months of deliberations by the exiles. Most of the powers now rest with 43-year-old Sangay. Central Tibetan Administration officials in this northern Indian hill station said the signing of the charter brought to an end a 369-year-old tradition of the Dalai Lamas holding both spiritual and temporal powers. The Dalai Lama, while addressing the sixth World Parliamentarians’ Convention on Tibet in the Canadian capital of Ottawa April 27, said the 14th

Addressing the participants, he said although he had the same face as during the last convention, this time, he no longer had the temporal responsibility. Tibet, he said, did not belong to the Dalai Lama but to the sixmillion Tibetans. Pointing to Sangay and Tibetan Parliament Speaker Penpa Tsering, who were on the stage, he said “They are both from the new generation, having been born and educated in India”. He said he was now devoting his time to his two commitments

He said that soon after he had assumed temporal authority in 1951, he had to leave for the Dromo region in Tibet. After his return in 1952, he started reforms. However, due to the attitude of the Chinese officials in Lhasa, his efforts could not progress. The Chinese wanted the changes to take place the way they wanted, he said. After arriving in India’s Mussoorie town as an exile in April 1959, he was able to reorganise the administrative system, including the establishment of new departments, like that of education, he said. In 1960, after a meeting in Bodh Gaya (Bihar), the democratic institutions began to take shape, he added. “In 2001, we had the direct election of the Kalon Tripa (prime minister) and following the two terms of Samdhong Rinpoche. The enthusiasm of the Tibetan people in the election process made me decide that I should go for the devolution of his political authority to the new Kalon Tripa and have complete retirement,” he said. The Dalai Lama believes that he will see Tibet again. “I think at a practical level, my health is quite good. So I’m expecting another 10-20 years. So within that period, definitely things will change,” he told the BBC Radio in an interview this month. IANS

Court rescues harassed father NEW DELHI: He returned from Pakistan after two decades and forcibly took over his father’s apartment. A Delhi court has now ordered him to vacate. Additional District Judge Inderjeet Singh May 24 said Raju had failed to establish his right on the property and was “duty bound to vacate and hand over the possession of the property to his father”. In his petition, 85-year-old Babu Ram had said that his son, Raju, who was a Pakistani national, came to India in 2009 and forcibly occupied his flat in South Delhi’s Dakshin Puri. The petition said Raju (who uses only his first name) moved to Pakistan in 1989 after marrying Rehana Bibi, a Pakistani Christian he had met during her trip to India. After 20 years, Raju returned to Delhi with his wife and three children. “In January 2009, they all came to India on a visa issued by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and have been forcibly staying in the flat since,” the petition said. Babu Ram argued that he had disowned his son, who was a drunkard, days after his arrival. His son and his family were harassing and abusing him, the father said. “I filed a police complaint against them and informed the home ministry about the overstay of Raju and his family in India,” Babu Ram said. But Raju, while admitting that he was a Pakistani national, denied in writing the allegations levelled by his father. Instead, he accused Babu Ram of acting at the behest of his other son. Observing that the flat was allotted to Babu Ram by the Delhi Development Authority on February 17, 1979, the court directed Raju to peacefully vacate the flat and hand it over to his father. The judge noted that Raju had neither presented any evidence to support his case nor cross-examined his father. “The plaintiff stepped into the witness box, the defendant was given an opportunity by awaiting and repeated calls to come and cross-examine witness. However, the defendant failed to come and cross-examine the witness,” the court said. It added that even Raju’s counsel failed to counter Babu Ram’s arguments. “Therefore, it is held that the defendant cannot establish issue in his favour that he has valuable right in the property,” the judge said. Now an app that makes haj easier A German computer scientist has come up with a smartphone app to help Muslims navigate in Mecca
Runaway penguin suffering from pink-eye TOKYO: A plucky penguin that was recaptured last week after nearly three months at large in the polluted waters of Tokyo Bay has conjunctivitis, an aquarium official said on Monday. The Humboldt penguin, one of 135 kept at Tokyo Sea Life Park, was taken back into captivity after 82 days of freedom following a breakout that made global headlines and garnered it a following around the world. On Friday, the day after its adventure came to an end, the bird "was diagnosed by a veterinarian as having conjunctivitis, so we have kept it in a room separate from the rest of our penguins", said aquarium official Takashi Sugino. Fans of the one-year-old runaway — known by the aquar-
ium only as Penguin No. 337 and without any sexual features because of its age — will have to wait until it has recovered from the condition, also known as pink eye, before it is revealed to the world. GLOBALPOST
Unexpected diagnosis Man goes to hospital for kidney stone, finds out he's a woman
C BERLIN: Every able Muslim is required to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia — known as the haj — at least once in their life. But the journey to Mecca can be an overwhelming experience. Over a million people from around the world descend on the Islamic holy sites during the haj period, and they have to both perform complicated rituals and find their way around heaving crowds in often stifling heat. Now a young German computer scientist has developed a smartphone app to help the pilgrims find their way and offer a guide to performing the rituals that are an essential part of the haj. Habiburrahman Dastageeri first had the idea when he went to Mecca with his family in 2006 to perform the Umrah, another, less complicated pilgrimage that can be done at any time of year. “I realized that it was not as easy as I had imagined,” he said. “Of course my family and I had prepared, but when I was there, I saw that there was a lot that we just couldn’t have known.” The 32-year-old, who was born in Mainz after his parents immigrated to Germany from Afghanistan, was studying computer science in Stuttgart University at the time. “I thought
it would be interesting if I could have had a navigation device that could also be a religious guide.” He soon embarked on a Masters program. For his project, he decided to develop a prototype GPS system for the haj. It took over two years to develop the “Amir” app, named for the Arabic word for guide. The haj rituals vary according to gender, so there is one app for men and one for women. The user can then choose exactly which of the different variations of the haj he or she is doing. “The first big challenge for a pilgrim is to know what, when and where the rituals have to be performed” Dastageeri told GlobalPost. “These are not part of everyday life for most people. They would not have practiced them before at home.” The step-by-step guide helps them prepare, with a check list and interactive tutorials on how to perform the rituals. Once they are in Mecca, the GPS navigation system comes into play. Pilgrims can quickly become disorientated in Mecca. A vast tent city set up for the visitors and a plethora of similarlooking hotels have led some people to go lost for up to three days, Dastageeri said, as they try to find their way back to their accommodation.
The app helps them not only find the exact pilgrimage sites but also how to get back to their tent or hotel room, and other meeting points. He has set up a company and began marketing the apps in December. The haj iPhone app costs 19.99 euros ($26), while the ones for the Umrah cost 9.99 euros ($13). They are available in Turkish, English, Arabic and German so far, and he plans to translate into other languages soon. He is also working on an Android version. In December, Dastageeri travelled to Saudi Arabia as part of a business delegation with the finance minister of BadenWürttember state, and held talks with officials about how the app could be utilized in the organization of the haj. He is also in talks with several potential investors. The project took longer than Dastageeri expected because he had not only had to develop the technology, but also make sure that the app complied with Islamic thought. To do so, he consulted with Australia-based scholar Abu Muneer Ismail Davids, who has written numerous books on the haj. “It was really important that there would be neither religious nor technological mistakes,” Dastageeri said. olorado photographer Steve Crecelius was admitted to the hospital five years ago for a kidney stone and received surprising news from the nurse, who told him he was actually a woman. Crecelius, who now goes by Stevie, found out she was born intersex, with both male and female sex organs. A trip to the emergency room for the kidney stone was what revealed what Crecelius had questioned her whole life. "The nurse [in the ER] is reading the ultrasound and says, 'Huh, this says you're a female,'" Crecelius said. According to Crecelius she felt a little different all her life. "When I was about six years old, I started having these feminine feelings, but that was in the '60s. Wearing
my mom's makeup, I thought I looked pretty," Crecelius told ABC. Crecelius's wife, Debbie, and their six children have accepted her new identity. "We told them individually. Qatar mall blaze snuffs out 13 children’s lives AFP/ FAISAL AL-TAMIMI
DOHA: A fire that erupted at a nursery in a huge shopping centre in the expat-dominated Qatari capital of Doha on Monday claimed 19 lives, including New Zealand triplets and 10 other children, officials said. Four of the youngsters who died were Spanish, said a foreign ministry spokeswoman in Madrid, while Paris announced that a three-year-old French child also perished. In Wellington, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said the death of the triplets, believed to be three-year-olds, was “a great tragedy”. Radio New Zealand named the triplets as Lillie, Jackson and Willsher Weekes. The blaze at the Villaggio mall left 19 dead in total, including 13 children — seven girls and six boys — and four female teachers, the Qatari interior ministry said on its Twitter account, citing the health minister. Two civil defence personnel also died, it said. Footage posted online showed black smoke billowing from the upmarket, Venicethemed complex as emergency vehicles rushed to the scene. The fire broke out at a nursery, state minister for the interior Abdullah bin Nasser AlThani told reporters.
Suu Kyi ends 24-year wait YANGON: Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi heads to Thailand today for her first trip abroad in more than two decades, ending an era of isolation and cementing her arrival on the global stage. The former political prisoner, who won a seat in parliament in historic April by-elections, is expected to meet the Thai prime minister, attend the World Economic Forum on East Asia and meet Myanmar communities during several days in the country. Suu Kyi, who spent 15 of the past 22 years under house arrest, will emerge into a world transformed, with the skyscrapers and frenetic activity of Bangkok presenting a stark contrast to her sleepy home city of Yangon, regularly beset by power outages. She is due to arrive in Bangkok around 1440 GMT. AFP

“The first report of fire at Villaggio was received by the operations centre at 11.02am (0802 GMT),” he said, according to the QNA state news agency, adding that police and civil defence reached the site within minutes. He said it became clear that 20 children were at the firstfloor nursery and “all efforts were concentrated on evacuating those kids”, adding firefighters had to break through the roof to gain access after a staircase collapsed. Dense smoke inside the mall combined with the fierce temperature from the flames made reaching the trapped children very difficult, a civil defence representative told a news conference. Expatriate New Zealand journalist Tarek Bazley said he was in the shopping centre with his two children when the fire broke out, but they escaped unharmed. “The volume of smoke coming out of it, it looked like you had 30 steam trains all pumping their smoke out above it,” Bazley told Radio New Zealand. But he said there was a lack of urgency from officials in the mall when alarms went off and complained of a “complete lack of planning, a complete lack of coordination in terms of removing people from this area”. Talk back Crime control is must Yes, it is high time that not only incidents of chain snatching, but all other crime in the City are brought down. Ours used to be a very peaceful City till of late. Agreed that we made rapid progress over the last few years, but this does not mean that we have to put up with increased crime rates too. We have a large law-and-order controlling machinery, which we have equipped with necessary manpower, vehicles and equipment. If these resources are effectively handled, then there is no reason why crime cannot be controlled. G Ravindran West Maredpally
Let CBI do its work Why is all this hullaballoo being created over a politician’s questioning and arrest by the CBI? Why are so many people going to his defence? The job of the CBI is to book those who have managed to wriggle out of the situation at a lower rung of policing control. Reaction by these with very obvious vested interests with direct or indirect support of the public will only result in justice getting affected. This, I’m sure, none of us want. All of us should stand united to ensure that justice prevails, and be a part of this process in whichever way we can. Saritha Rekha Hi-tech City

Ageing is in the mind It is a nasty habit of human beings to start relaxing immediately after retirement. While a person burns quite a few calories when he or she is in employment, sedentary lifestyle afterwards results in few calories being burnt. And the individual ends up accepting reduced energy and growing illnesses to advancing age. Staying fit and young is so much in the mind. Roop Rathore By email

ou can’t blame a visitor to Hyderabad this week, for he or she has come to the Promised Land where its population is damned happy with no problem except one political leader called Jagan Mohan Reddy getting hauled up by an investigation agency called the CBI for whatever reasons. So much air time, so much space have been devoted by the mass media to this issue of Jagan with CBI that it looked like the 80 lakh plus have no water shortage, no power outage, no shaming crime, no issue of corruption in public place, or no botheration on the chocking roads. Media dharma is to present the public with a balanced mix of happenings — all those problems that crop up in societal living. There are acts of noble charity like the boys funding themselves to provide cool, drinking water to the thirsty passengers in bus stands, a collector financing the studies of some brilliant but poor girls, a railway gang-man detecting live detonators on the tracks, a young scientist coming back from the West to serve his native city or the shameful act of a selfish man who kills his wife for delivering a baby girl. But, no, our media went like a possessed soul and ladled out nonstop colourful details of a man being questioned for omissions and commissions he has supposedly committed. To know the public pulse these days, we must get onto the Internet and see what the people — both tax payers and tax evaders — think about the media celebrating an event that calls for cool deliberation and strict and just handling. These comments are both revealing and instructive. “Oh, as if he alone is the Satan and others on the other side are all Saints!” remarks one. “When will these people (media) know that we are worried about the falling rupee, rising prices, diseases and joblessness?” asked another angry bird. Many are turning their ire against televisions, which they say, have no basic etiquette.

He (or she?) points out that some pretending as anchors do not know how to conduct the coverage of an event. “I heard one saying the CBI asked Jagan, “How are you?” Do you want breakfast?” Well, media were not allowed in, they say, prey, how did they record these words in direct speech?” One impatient browser jotted down under the Jagan saga, “Hey, dude, understand corruption is no longer a simple bribery, it is a mutative gene, one moment you see it in one shape, and in another, quite in a different tone and tenor.” There are umpteen such comments that only the cyber space could hold, no physical space can. The long and short of this is that we, in the media, must learn to present the happenings in a neutral, factual way to keep the sanctity of the media dharma. In this context, we at Postnoon, could crow with pride that we kept our heads on our shoulders and neither toned down nor toned up the aforesaid event while telling our readers that life is too complex to be confined to one single happening. Time has come for the media to give up the all-knowing provider role. If it is the mass media, it is the mass that is at the centre and what affects the maximum number of people must get the highest priority. In today’s
Hyderabad, the killing weather, truant power, receding water, galloping prices, stifling pollution and mad traffic are issues that affect a maximum number of people and they must get reflected on the screen and on paper. Amen. Tailend: Way back in the early eighties, Ahmedabad was infested with two great scourges the other II-tier cities faced years after — maddening traffic and communal riots. Not a week passed without some part of the city being brought under curfew. Not a week passed when several stabbings and arson did not get reported in some part of the city. When the annoyed Congress satraps in Delhi berated the rulers in the state capital for not containing the nuisance, the rulers passed the abuses multiplied by two to the police chief. The then police chief, in desperation, told the chief minister, “Sir I can bring this madness to a halt in one day.” The CM was aghast, “In one day! Then what is preventing you? “The media. Close them for a day!” What the response of the chagrined CM was is lost in history. Let’s not bring the situation to this pass.
ANNA’S KHADAR CAN’T HANDLE THE STAIN of team’s b-grade mud
eam Anna has become a burden for Anna Hazare and the Gandhian method he is trying to uphold. The latest is the remark by his key aide Prashant Bhushan, that the prime minister is being used as a Shikhandi to shield itself from Opposition’s attacks. However, this is not the first time such a derogatory remark has been made against the PM — in a 2004 meeting in Bangalore, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha had attributed the same stature to the prime minister. Team Anna is lowering itself to the standards of the very class they are trying to reprimand and soon it will come to a stage where the public will see little difference between the two. Hazare must realise that his anti-graft movement is not an end in itself and his core team does not represent India. The earlier he understands this reality and makes amends, the better chances the movement will have to sustain itself with people’s support. There has been enough infighting in Team Anna and many prominent personalities have walked out. The self-obsessed cronies must be shown their place.

eard about a new brand of cosmetic? Tweet about it; just back from a vacation with family or friends? Post pictures on Facebook. In simple terms, we are constantly connected with people and products through social media. Social media today is being used widely by companies to promote their brands and even enhance their image. And why so? Let’s look at this data, more than 400 million consumers are active on Facebook, and around 106 million consumers are Twitter users. Ninety-one per cent of business buyers read blogs, watch user-generated video and participate on social media sites, according to Forrester Research. Eighty-nine per cent of reporters use blogs for story research and 65 per cent use social networking sites. The above stated reasons are good enough to understand why we cannot any more ignore the relevance of social media marketing. What needs to be understood is that it is not just important to exist in social media channels but also to create an impact. However we must know a few dos’ and don’ts while managing our brands on these available social media channels. First thing to remember is to not sound plastic and too promotional. Also equally important is the amount of promotional messages posted in social media. Do not bombard your customers with offers, ad looking copy. Also it is necessary to manage your reputation and monitor it frequently. No doubt that social media is the ‘in thing’ for marketers and will continue to be, the success of it will depend on how this medium is utilised.

he black cloud that is recession has been thundering over the corporate sector for quite some time now. The number of people losing their jobs has been on a constant rise with close to 2,000 people being fired at HSBC, Hyderabad, over the past one year alone. While the word “recession” or “economic turndown” are used in conjunction with anyone being laid off, company being downsized, or simply fired, it becomes easier for employers to let go of someone, blaming it all on the economy. If you haven’t realised this yet, bosses are quite disposable. When companies are downsized, they usually replace the boss that has been fired with someone who can get two jobs done at the price of one. Who says no to a promotion anyway? Besides, these days, the title is as valuable as money. So, what happens when the guy who is promoted happens to be your best friend? Perhaps, he/she is your equal at work and reporting to them might put a huge emotional speed bump in your relationship. However, Madiha Ali, an employee at The Fuller Life, Bengaluru believes that proper communication between the two may ease the transition. “If you know that during your reviews, there is a chance that your friend at work may receive a better promotion, then you and her need to have talked about the change even before it happened in order to avoid bitterness later on. IS THIS THE FUTURE? The latest discovery of the ICH4 test, which could rule out the need for chemotherapy in breast cancer patients and reduces chance of the cancer recurring has created a major buzz. However, there is no consensus among City doctors regarding its effectiveness
Anishaa Kumar anishaa.k@postnoon.com
C
ANCER — the word brings about a sense of fear amongst many of us. Breast cancer has seen a growing number of instances over the year. Breast cancer also brings up the need for chemotherapy which many dread. Dr P Raghu Ram, director and consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon, KIMSUshalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases says, “The vast majority of patients receive chemotherapy after breast cancer surgery. Chemotherapy has a number of debilitating side effects which include nausea, vomiting, hair loss and fatigue. With an increasing number of breast cancers in India being diagnosed in 20 s, 30’s and 40’s, infertility is also a major effect of chemotherapy that one has to cope with. The aim of chemotherapy is to minimise the chances of disease recurrence after breast surgery and most take it as there is no other alternative.” Hope has now come in the
form of a simple test which can detect whether a person has a chance of redeveloping cancer again and thus whether they require chemotherapy or not. This new study was conducted by the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre at The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, UK. Talking about the study Dr Raghu Ram says, “A study recently published in British Journal of Cancer outlines results from a simple and cost effective test that has been described by researchers at Royal Marsden NHS Trust in London which predicts accurately whether or not a subset of patients following breast cancer surgery will need adjuvant chemotherapy. The test called ICH4 could pick out the low-risk tumours and prevent these women from undergoing chemotherapy.” The test works by measuring levels of ER, PR, HER2 and Ki67 proteins in the tumour. This study that was conducted on 104 women whom were said to be at moderate risk of breast cancer. The test concluded that they actually were at low-risk and didn’t
require chemotherapy after all.
Benefits At the outset this study appears to be something that could bring about a revolution. On the benefits of this finding, Dr Raghu Ram says, “It is very cost effective and has great relevance to a country like India. ICH4 test costs `10,000 — a fraction of the cost when compared with ONCOTYPE Dx which costs `2,00,000. ONCOTYPE Dx is currently being used world over which also predicts whether or not a subset of patients require chemotherapy after surgery.” Dr Mohana Vamsi, chief surgical oncologist, Omega hospitals differs on his opinion, “This test is useful only for people in very early stages of breast cancer. Otherwise it is not of much use.”
The future Currently this is just a finding. It will take time before it is approved and hits the market for commercial use. Dr Raghu Ram says, “These preliminary results which have just been published will need to be replicated in other Centres before it can be accepted for widespread use. The
National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) which is the drug licensing authority in United Kingdom will be evaluating the efficacy of this drug before it is widely accepted for use in the UK later this year.”
India and ICH4 The numbers of cancer and especially breast cancer cases in India have seen an increase. The formal introduction of this will definitely be a revolution. Dr Raguram says, “It will indeed be very good news for patients in India if this test is approved for widespread use. Not only will a significant number of patients be spared of the need to have adjuvant chemotherapy with its debilitating side effects, but equally, this test will be affordable by many patients in India and hence has a potential for widespread use in our country.” Dr Vamsi says, “The test may not be that effective in our country as in India cancers are usually detected a too late. By then chemotherapy is the only option. It will be useful if the cancer is detected early and also there is still some time before it is clinically available.”

Americans flocking to India for stem cell WASHINGTON: A growing number of Americans are travelling to India to seek treatment for rare diseases through India’s experimental embryonic stem cell therapy, according to a report. Among them Cash Burnaman, a 6-year-old South Carolina boy, who travelled with his parents to India seeking treatment for a rare genetic condition that has left him developmentally disabled, CNN reported. “Cash is mute. He walks with the aid of braces. To battle his incurable condition, which is so rare it doesn’t have a name, Cash has had to take an artificial growth hormone for most of his life,” it said. His divorced parents, Josh Burnaman and Stephanie Krolick, have paid tens of thousands of dollars to have Cash undergo experimental injections of human embryonic stem cells at New Delhi’s NuTech Mediworld run by Dr Geeta Shroff, a retired obstetrician and self-taught embryonic stem cell practitioner. Shroff first treated Cash — who presents symptoms similar to Down Syndrome — in 2010. “I am helping improve their quality of life,” she told CNN. After five weeks of treatment, Cash and his parents returned home to the US. That’s when Cash began walking with the aid of braces for the first time. For four or five weeks of treatment, Shroff says she has charged her 87 American patients an average of $25,000. But doctors cited by CNN said all that work and hope and money Cash’s supporters have funnelled into his experimental therapy likely will have no medical benefits. “There is zero evidence for what she (Shroff) is doing being effective,” Rutgers University’s Dr Wise Young, a leading US neuroscientist, was quoted as saying. “It’s concerning no matter how you look at it,” said CNN chief medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta. “Frankly it’s the complete wrong way of going about this sort of science.” A leading Indian neurosurgeon, Dr PN Tandon, cited by CNN agreed there was zero medical evidence of the effectiveness of embryonic stem cell therapy like that provided at NuTech Mediworld. But inside her clinic, surrounded by patients, Shroff disagreed. “Success,” she told CNN, “is defined differently by various groups of people within that therapy mode. So as of right now, almost everyone — greater than 90 per cent — have had success.”

New treatment for eye patients
kbt=qebo^mv helps tinnitus sufferers PARIS: Tinnitus, an incurable ringing in the ears that can wreck the lives of those that suffer from it, can be significantly eased by a new combination of therapies, The Lancet reported on Friday. The approach uses psychological training and audio therapy in small groups to reduce distress and refocus the mind so that it does not dwell on the sound. Dutch researchers tested it on 245 adults with tinnitus while 247 others were given “usual care,” meaning they were referred for standard counselling at a hearing clinic.
UP TO A FIFTH OF ADULTS ARE AFFECTED BY TINNITUS AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE, BUT TREATMENTS ARE COSTLY AND THERE IS NO BENCHMARK OF PROOF TO SHOW THEIR EFFECT
After 12 months, patients in the specialised care group had an average improvement of 33 per cent in problems caused by severe tinnitus, compared to a gain of 13 percent in the “usual care” group. The specialised care group also saw significant improvements in quality of life and distress, as measured by scientifically validated questionnaires. The research was led by Rilana Cima and Johan Vlaeyen at Maastricht University. “We do nothing about the sound per se,” Cima told AFP. “Even though people still hear the sound after the intervention, they say they feel cured. I say to my patients, tinnitus has

to be like the shoe on your foot —it has to be something that you can continuously feel if you want to, but you don’t (feel it) if you make it neutral.” Up to a fifth of adults are affected by tinnitus at some point in their life, but treatments are costly and there is no benchmark of proof to show whether they are effective or not. Cima acknowledged that the
therapy seemed expensive, given that it required the help of several specialists working in small groups over a long time. “It is costly, but we have done an extensive economic analysis and from a societal perspective, it is only slightly more costly than usual care,” she said. In a commentary, German tinnitus specialist Berthold Langguth of the University of
Regensburg, said the individual techniques used in the Dutch research were not new in themselves. What was novel, he said, was the way treatments were put together in a multidisciplinary team whose results were then scrutinised with rigour. While not a cure, the experiment was greatly beneficial, marking “the end of therapeutic nihilism” towards tinnitus, he said. KOLKATA: An eye hospital in Kolkata has introduced an innovative method of ‘Auto blood Conjunctival Graft Fixation’ surgery for treating Pterygium patients with their blood. Pterygium is a wing-shaped fibro vascular tissue encroaching on to cornea from the nasal or temporal side causing visual disturbance, irritation and redness of eye. “The idea of using natural blood clot as tissue adhesive is derived to provide the benefits of glue fixation to the patients minus drawbacks,” said Santanu Mitra, senior consultant — cataract and occuloplasty services, Disha Eye Hospitals and Research centre. “Once the Pteryium is excised and the recipient bed is bare, a thin film of blood oozing in the surgical field is allowed to form clot over the area. Then the graft is harvested is aligned over the clotted blood. This is a ‘no suture no glue’ graft fixation technique,” said Mitra. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation, tropical atmosphere, excess outdoor exposure to sunlight and wind are some of factors behind the occurrence of this disease. Various surgical procedures have been tried in the past but most of them have been discarded due to high recurrence rate or blinding side effects. Two of the most popular methods are grafting with healthy conjunctiva harvested from the other part of the eye and usage of fibrin glue for conjunctival graft fixation. “But both the methods have some problems. The first one leaves behind symptoms like pain, redness of eye, watering and foreign body sensation. The fibre in glue is not readily available and carries the potential risk of disease transmission as it is derived from two clotting factors derived from human blood,” Mitra said. He said due to the disadvantages of both the methods the procedure of ‘Auto blood Conjunctival Graft Fixation’ Surgery was invented. IANS

Raj Kapoor’s Awaara added to Time’s 100 greatest films
T
ime magazine has included Raj Kapoor’s 1951 classic Awaara among 20 new entries added to its All-Time 100 list of the greatest films made since 1923, the beginning of the prestigious US periodical. Rethinking the movie masterpieces, Time critic Richard Corliss describes Raj Kapoor as “the great star-auteur of India’s postcolonial golden age of movies — Cary Grant and Cecil B. DeMille in one handsome package.” “The ‘50s films he headlined and directed became huge hits not just in his newly freed homeland but also across the Arab crescent from Indonesia to North Africa,” Time noted. Kapoor, who modelled his screen persona on Charlie Chaplin’s Little Tramp, was 26 when he filmed Awaara (The Tramp). Time calls Awaara as “a glistening showcase for Kapoor and the great India siren Nargis (his lover onscreen and off).” IANS

Bollywood going through transition: Chandrachur
A
ctor Chandrachur Singh, who has been out of action for health reasons, is back. From films to television he is doing everything and is also wowed by the film industry’s professionalism and changing work culture. “Bollywood is going through a transitional phase. One of the good things that has happened over the years is that there is continuity. Now most of the films are shot in just one schedule, which was not there before,” Chandrachur said. “The mechanics of filmmaking have changed; post-production values have changed in a big way. There is a lot of professionalism today; films are getting fresh treatment...It is good to see they have learned the business dynamics of it,” added the 43-year-old. He breezed into Bollywood in 1996 with two successful films— Maachis and Tere Mere Sapne. After 2001 release Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiyaa the actor suffered health problems and has been out of action. The actor claims he used his time constructively. IANS

KAKURO
How to play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

he Elite Football League of India (EFLI) happens to be the first men’s professional American Football league in India. Backed by the Sports Authority of India(SAI), the EFLI has nine teams from India alongside three foreign sides participating — a team each from Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The league is set to hold its pre-season in Sri Lanka during the month of July while the inaugural season is set to kick start in November in India. The game which is often confused with Rugby, is looking to have a foothold in the Indian sub-continent soon. Though many are still unaware about the existence of such a sport, the organisers are positive about the sport being accepted in the nation. The Hyderabad team, who call themselves the Hyderabad Sky Kings are taking this competition very seriously. both foreign and Indian coaches. Most of the players are not regular American Football sports persons; Many belong to different games like Soccer, Rugby, Hockey, Kabaddi, Basketball and Volleyball to name a few. But none of them are regular cricket players and there seems to be a reason behind it. “We want aggression. Cricket is a much “softer” game and American Football needs
players who are much more aggressive. We were mainly looking at players who had strength, speed and agility in abundance.” says Bill Phaturos, a coach from the United States of America. He not only coaches the Sky Kings but does the same for the other teams in the league. A doctor by profession, Phaturos runs a program known as the Scottsdale Youth Football Firebird in the US. Shutting between countries, Phaturos
says he has no complaints and is extremely glad with the way the players are taking a keen interest while training for the competition ahead. “Though it is an extremely hard game to teach and learn, the situation is not so bad as the players are extremely hardworking, dedicated and passionate about the game,” he added. Like many sports in India, this game too faces the problem of having lack of amenities.

They do not have a proper place to practice. “We require a nice grass ground to practice but that is not available in the city and hence we have to make do with the existing facilities,” rues Praveen Kumar Reddy, head coach of the Sky Kings. The Hyderabad side are currently geared up to clash with the Bangalore War Hawks in an inaugural match on June 2 at the Lal Bahdur Stadium, a match which is being waited for with batted breath.

Australia pins hopes on Matthew SYDNEY: Gold medallist Matthew Mitcham will spearhead Australian diving hopes at the London Olympics after being named Tuesday in a 10person squad which includes Beijing Games teammate Melissa Wu. Mitcham, who performed the highest scoring dive in Olympic history to come from behind to snatch gold in the 10m platform in Beijing, won the event at the Australian championships in April after a long stretch of injury. The 24-year-old said injuries including abdominal problems had kept him from his best in recent months. “I feel like the underdog again in London,” he said. “I’ve had a few injuries that have kept me from my best but it is good to go in without all that pressure. Federer seeks Olympic medal one expects me to win and I feel more comfortable when I am in that position.” He added: “I believe I can win gold again in London. I’ve done it before and know what it takes.” Mitcham will be joined in London by Wu, who won silver in the synchronised 10m platform in 2008, the 2010 Commonwealth Games 3m gold medallist Sharleen Stratton and Loudy Wiggins, 32, who will be at her fourth Olympics. Wiggins, who won bronze in Sydney in the 10m platform synchronised and again in Athens in the 10m platform, will become the only Australian diver to compete at four Games when she joins Rachel Bugg in the 10m platform synchronised. The team heads to the Madrid Grand Prix on June 15-17, except for Mitcham who remains in Australia to catch up on training missed during his lay-off.
PARIS: Roger Federer is desperate to add Olympic gold to his 16 Grand Slam singles titles in London this summer to fill the one gaping hole in his career achievements. The Swiss legend won a gold in doubles in Beijing in 2008, but has never been on the top of the medals podium in singles despite lingering frustration at knowing he should have been involved at least once. “It’s different pressure because the form is best of three so you feel like you have a bad five minutes and that could be it. That’s kind of what cost me against (Tomas) Berdych in Athens, against (James) Blake in Beijing,” said Federer. “And then next thing, you know, you’re out of both tournaments, and I think I was seeded 1 or 2 in either one of them.” Federer finished fourth in Sydney in 2000, was knocked out in the second round by Berdych in 2004 and lost a 2008 quarter-final to Blake. “Obviously I’m very happy to represent Switzerland. I did way too good back in 2000 (where he finished fourth), didn’t do so well in Athens. In Beijing, I was really close to a medal in the singles and then in doubles I got the gold,” added Federer, who took the title
It’s different pressure because it is best of three so you feel like you have a bad five minutes and that could be it. That’s kind of what cost me against Berdych in Athens. Roger Federer, Swiss tennis legend with Stanislas Wawrinka. “So I feel very relaxed going into the Olympics. I don’t feel like this is a must win for me or anything like that. I probably would feel a bit more pressure if I wouldn’t have won Olympic gold in doubles in Beijing.” On Monday, Federer kicked off his 50th straight major with a 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 win over Germany’s Tomas Kamke at the French Open to equal Jimmy Connors’ record of 233 Grand Slam match victories.
Federer is now 233-35 lifetime at the majors. Monday’s win was also his 50th against 12 losses at Roland Garros having made his debut as a wildcard in 1999 where he went down to Australia’s Pat Rafter in the first round. Since that time, he has missed just one Grand Slam — the 1999 US Open where he failed to qualify. “It’s a big record, because that was longevity. Jimmy is obviously one of the greats of all time, and was around for 20 years,” said Federer. “This is my 13th or 14th French Open. It all started back in ‘99 against Rafter, and I have hardly missed any Grand Slams. I love the big tournaments. I have been so successful for such a long time and to already tie that record which is 30 years old is pretty incredible.” Federer, who is likely to set the new Grand Slam match record in the next round where he faces Adrian Ungur, now has his sights on another Connors record. “He had 109 career victories, I’m at 74 now. Is it possible for me to equal Connors’ titles? 110, that would be a round figure. That would be incredible. But that’s a dream. I go year after year, and we’ll see.”
LONDON: Radical cleric and terror suspect Abu Qatada was ordered on Monday to remain in a British prison without bail ahead of his deportation appeal because he could pose a danger during the ’12 Games. It would be exceptionally problematic to allow Qatada to be on London’s streets during heightened security for the Games, a Special Immigration Appeals Commission hearing in London ruled. Qatada, who is accused of involvement in several bomb attacks, will remain in a British prison for at least another five months.
David chases elusive Games dream PENANG, MALAYSIA: Sixtime world champion Nicol David has owned women’s squash for years and would be a safe bet to bring home Malaysia’s first Olympic gold if she could compete in the coming London Games. But David, 28, is arguably the most dominant athlete who will be denied that chance as her sport remains an Olympic outsider, frustrating her dreams of some day mounting the medal podium. “It is so heart-breaking when you know this sport has so much to offer and we have got everything it takes to be an Olympic sport,” she said. “It is probably the most all-round sport you can find. To be in the game and not see it (in the Olympics) is so sad.” A Malaysian national heroine, the lightning-quick David has won virtually every title squash has to offer. She is in her seventh year as women’s world number one.

Reluctant favourites Defending champions Spain will attempt to become the first team to win three major tournaments in succession as they head to Poland and Ukraine following a perfect qualifying campaign
POSTNOON PREDICTION
Reigning SCHRUNS, AUSTRIA: European and world champions Spain go into Euro 2012 as one of the favourites but it’s a tag the players would rather do without, defender Sergio Ramos (right, centre) told AFP. “We don’t really like being given this role,” he said at the squad’s training camp in the alpine resort of Schruns, Austria. “We’re aware that everyone sees us as favourites, since we won the World Cup and the Euro but you can’t live in the past. We need to prove ourselves every day and start again from scratch.” In their first Group C match on June 10, Spain will come up against 2006 world champions Italy, before also facing Ireland and Croatia. “I don’t think you can underestimate anyone,” Ramos continued. “In this kind of competition, any team can create a surprise. With Barcelona captain Carles Puyol and prolific striker David Villa injured, Spain will be missing two players whose performances were crucial to the squad’s 2010 World Cup and 2008 European championship wins. “It’s always rather sad news when these players who make a difference and are important for their club and for the national team are not here,” noted Ramos. “We will miss them both. But it’s also true that nobody is indispensable. “We are lucky to have a great number Certainly the hot favourites alongside Germany and the Netherlands. They are without David Villa up front, but a scintillating midfield might be enough to see them through.
of Spanish players who can make a difference and want a place in the squad.” Coach Vicente del Bosque called up many new names to the team’s Austrian training camp, as stars from Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao were unable to attend due to Friday’s Copa del Rey final. He was expected to give his final list for the Euro on Sunday. The European Championship in Poland and Ukraine could be La Roja’s chance to make it into the record books, by becoming the first nation ever to win three major international competitions in a row. “We want to make history, to do something nobody has ever done before: to be European champions, world champions and European champions again,” said Ramos.

SPAIN GROUP C At a glance As reigning world and European champions, Spain will be the team to beat once more in Poland and Ukraine. After ending a 44-year wait for a major trophy with their Euro 2008 triumph under Luis Aragonés, the Spanish have kept up the winning habit under Vicente del Bosque. They posted 10 straight victories in 2010 World Cup qualifying, then recovered from a slow start to reach the final where Andrés Iniesta hit the extra-time winner.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Spain hopes to unleash their X-Factor MADRID: As the player that makes the reigning European and world champions tick, Spain fans are hoping Xavi Hernandez can hold off the effects of fatigue and injury to lead La Roja to more glory in Poland and Ukraine. At 32, the outstanding man in Spain’s triumphs at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup has at least one major international tournament left in him. But is he fit enough, mentally and physically, to live up to the incredibly high standard he has set himself since finally coming to the international fore at Euro 2008, when he was named player of the tournament? Xavi has averaged over 60 matches a year since 2008. His body is feeling the effects, with a chronic calfmuscle injury in particular taking its toll, but the player himself insists he feels in good health and has a good few years left in the tank. “I am not thinking about the end of my career. I want to play all the time, I can be a bit of a pain in that regard,” he said recently. He completed 104 passes more than any other player at the 2010 World Cup, and earned the nickname ‘Humphrey Bogart’ thanks to Andres Montes, the eccentric, late Spanish television commentator who associated his love of passing the ball to the famous misquote from the film Casablanca - “Play it again, Sam.”

Djoker sails to safety Roger Federer on Monday equalled Jimmy Connors record of 233 Grand Slam wins while Victoria Azarenka survived a first round scare. PARIS: Novak Djokovic’s bid for an historic Grand Slam enjoyed the perfect French Open start on Monday as Roger Federer celebrated his 50th straight major with a record-equalling 233rd Grand Slam win. But there was a huge scare for women’s world number one Victoria Azarenka, who had to fight from a set and 4-0 down to defeat Italian veteran Alberta Brianti to avoid becoming the first top seed ever to lose in the opening round. Djokovic, bidding to become only the third man to hold all four majors at the same time, and the first in 43 years, eased past Italian claycourt specialist Potito Starace 7-6 (7/3), 6-3, 6-1. The world number one already has the Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open crowns under wraps and a first French Open triumph in two weeks’ time would make him the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete the sweep. “It’s a challenge and something to embrace and to enjoy. It’s really too early to talk about getting my hands on the trophy, but it’s definitely a goal. Anything is possible,” said Djokovic, who next faces Slovenia’s Blaz Kavcic. Djokovic has yet to reach a Paris final, having fallen three times at the semi-final stage. This year, he is scheduled to meet Federer in the last four. Federer, the 2009 champion and four times runner-up to Rafael Nadal, endured few problems getting past Germany’s Tomas Kamke, the world number 78, winning 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. The win, achieved on a sixth match point,

Fish eyes Wimbledon return LOS ANGELESL: US number one Mardy Fish is eyeing a return to tennis competition at Wimbledon after a procedure to address a frightening heart arrhythmia, USA Today reported. “It felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest,” Fish told the newspaper in a telephone interview. It was the first time Fish had spoken about the condition that had kept him off the ATP Tour, and which prompted to withdraw from the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year now underway at Roland Garros. Fish said he had a procedure called cardiac catheter ablation in Los Angeles to correct faulty wiring in his heart. “It has been so scary,” Fish said, explaining the condition caused him to wake in the night with heart palpitations. “It was super-hard to go to sleep,” he said.
Novak Djokovic took him level with Jimmy Connors’ 30-year-old record of 233 Grand Slam match wins. Monday’s victory was also his 50th at Roland Garros having
made his debut as a wildcard in 1999 where he went down to Australia’s Pat Rafter in the first round. Since that time, he has missed just one Grand Slam —

Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna have been seeded sixth in the men’s doubles draw of the French Open while Leander Paes and partner Alexander Peya start as the 7th seeds. Bhupathi and Bopanna face the French pair of Marc Gicquel and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round at Roland Garros. Seventh-ranked Paes pairs up with Austria’s Peya. They meet Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini in the first round Wednesday. Meanwhile, Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sands play Gisela Dulko and Paola Suarez in the doubles first round beginning on Tuesday.
the 1999 US Open where he failed to qualify. “It’s a big record. Jimmy is obviously one of the greats of all time, and was around for 20 years,” she said. “I have been so successful for such a long time and to already tie that record which is 30 years old is pretty incredible.” Azarenka staged a thrilling recovery to defeat world number 105 Brianti 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-2 and will next face German qualifier Dinah Pfizenmaier. But for much of her rollercoaster battle with the Brianti, who had never won a match in four previous appearances at Roland Garros, the Belarussian struggled. AFP
Nadal looks forward to create history PARIS: Rafael Nadal gets his bid for an historic seventh French Open title under way on Tuesday when he faces Italy’s Simone Bolelli on Philippe Chatrier Court. Second seeded Nadal, who equalled Bjorn Borg’s record of six Roland Garros titles last year, takes a 45-1 career record in Paris into the match. Nadal has defeated the world 111 Italian in both of their
career meetings. Ten-times a Grand Slam title winner, Nadal, 25, has a remarkable CV at the French Open which has yielded six trophies. His only blip, a 2009 fourth round loss to Robin Soderling, came at a time when he was plagued by the acute knee problems which have often threatened to overwhelm him. This season, Nadal has, once
again, been surpreme on clay and arrives in Paris boasting a 16-1 record on the surface. But the Spaniard is keen to play down talk of a seventh French Open. “I have much more than I ever dreamed,” said Nadal. “I am coming here every year with the motivation to play well. But I am not going to be more motivated because I have six and I can win seven.”
Hewitt keen to toe line longer PARIS: As a grizzled veteran of 52 Grand Slam tournaments, Australia’s former world number one Lleyton Hewitt isn’t ready to throw in his courtside towel just yet as he gets to grips with his new bionic toe. The former Wimbledon and US Open champion may ultimately have come off worst in a four-hour joust in Monday’s French Open first round meeting with Slovenian Blaz Kavcic but just being out there scrapping was a victory of sorts for a driven competitor who has two screws and a metal plate in the big toe of his left foot. England crush WI again James fires in
Stuart Broad (L) reacts towards Darren Sammy (R) during the 2nd Test match between England and West Indies. AFP/ANDREW YATES NOTTINGHAM: England beat West Indies by nine wickets to win the second Test with more than a day to spare at Trent Bridge here on Monday and take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in this three-match series. Set 108 for victory on the fourth day, England finished on 111 for one. England captain Andrew Strauss, who made 141 in the first innings to follow his hundred in the five-wicket first Test win at Lord’s, was out for 45 when he chipped part-time spinner Marlon Samuels to short extracover with his side just 19 runs short of victory. But fellow left-hander Alastair Cook (43 not out) and Jonathan Trott (17 not out) completed the

ndrew Strauss and opening partner Alastair Cook became only the fifth partnership in Test history to have put on more than 5,000 runs together. They went past the landmark with a stand of 89 as England beat West Indies by nine wickets at Trent Bridge. The other duos to have achieved the feat are West Indies’ Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, Australia’s Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer, India’s Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar and Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jaywardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
win. “We’re delighted to get over the line,” said Strauss. “It was quite hard work at times. It’s been a hot, hard four days and there were some really good performances from the lads.” West Indies were all out for 165 in their second innings shortly after lunch. Samuels made a dashing 76 not out, top-scoring for the tourists for the second time in the match after his first innings 117. However, he merely delayed the inevitable and this loss extended West Indies’ winless run in England to 16 Tests, with 14 defeats and two draws. Man-of-the-match Tim Bresnan took four wickets for 37 runs in 17 overs for a Test-best match haul of eight for 141, while James Anderson was close behind his fellow paceman with a second innings return of four for 43 in 20.1 overs. This victory meant Bresnan, who made a useful 39 not out in England’s first innings, had been on the winning side in all his 13 Tests. “Tim Bresnan was fantastic,” said Strauss. “He showed what a good contributor he is for the side in both innings, and he chipped in with the bat as well.” Bresnan added: “It’s quite difficult at times when you’ve got a soft ball and a flat pitch but that’s when you’ve got to step up and do it. “Consistency is my major weapon and to keep banging in that length.” Considering West Indies resumed on their overnight 61 for six, their second innings total represented a considerable recovery. Heat victory MIAMI: LeBron James poured in 32 points and pulled down 13 rebounds on Monday as the Miami Heat drew first blood in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals with a 93-79 victory over the Boston Celtics. Dwyane Wade added 22 points and seven assists for the Heat, who never trailed and led by as many as 17. Miami host game two on Tuesday, with the winners of the best-of-seven series advancing to the NBA Finals where they will play either Oklahoma City or San Antonio. Shane Battier scored 10 points, Mario Chalmers had nine and Mike Miller finished with eight as the Heat again coped admirably without star forward Chris Bosh. Bosh remained remained sidelined with a strained abdominal muscle, and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said there was no timetable for his return. Kevin Garnett scored 23 points and added 10 rebounds for Boston, but the Celtics looked a step slow most of the night after wrapping up a seven-game second-round victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night. The Heat outrebounded the Celtics 48-33, and blocked 11 Boston shots. Rajon Rondo, whose triple-double led the Celtics

FORT WORTH, TEXAS: Zach Johnson fired a two-over 72 that included a two-shot penalty at the final hole on Sunday to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational, denying Jason Dufner a third US PGA victory this season. On a day of dramatic swings in the duel between Johnson and Dufner, Johnson appeared to be home and dry after Dufner’s triple-bogey seven at the par-four 15th. That gave Johnson a fourshot lead, and even after a bogey at 16, he arrived at 18 with a three-stroke lead. He had celebrated what he thought was a par for a three-shot win but then realized he had moved his ball marker on the 18th green and failed to replace it properly. With the two-shot penalty, Johnson signed for a 72 and a 12-under total of 268 — giving him only a one-shot victory over Dufner. AFP

in game seven against the Sixers, finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Paul Pierce scored 12 points, connecting on just five of 18 shots from the floor. The Celtics started firing in the second quarter, battling back from an 11point deficit to tie the score at halftime. But the Heat, led by NBA Most Valuable Player James and Wade, inexorably pulled away in the third. “One down,” Spoelstra said. “At times it was a strange game — some good runs by both teams. We felt we could have played better, I’m sure they felt the same thing. “We were able to find a way to grind it,” Spoelstra added. “You have to do that against this team. They have so many live weapons out there you have to cover ground and play to your instincts and your speed.”
South Korea thrash Pak IPOH, MALAYSIA: South Korea demolished Asian champions Pakistan 4-0, while top seeds Britain lost 2-3 to Argentina, in a day of upsets at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on Monday. The results catapult Argentina to second place in the rankings, with six points from four games, behind New Zealand in the seven-team tournament which is an important last warmup for the London Olympics. In a match that saw South Korea repeatedly overwhelm the Pakistani defence who could not match their rivals’ pace or tactics, Nam Hyun-Woo opened the scoring for South Korea before converting a penalty corner to make it 2-0. The third goal came in the 49th minute from You Hyo-Sik, who dived full stretch to flick the ball into the goal, before Hyun Hye-Sung scored the final goal. AFP
