Burglars are increasingly keeping a nightly date with temples in the City. One reason for this is said to be the growing CCTV surveillance elsewhere. Temples, however, are left unguarded at night and are hence soft targets

Temple heist again “W

e are told that the two hundies might have contained at least Rs 20,000,” Neredment police inspector K Venkat Reddy said. In another incident that took place in Miyapur, burglars broke into the Sai Baba temple and managed to steal nearly 30 kgs of silver articles worth Rs 15 lakh. Here too, burglars broke the lock and accessed the temple premises. The police do not rule out involvement of professional groups, though nothing has been confirmed yet. The temples are left unguarded at night, police said. The temple

COVER STORY trustees are reportedly pleading lack of finance for security. Investigating officers told Postnoon that one reason for nightly marauders zeroing in

on temples is probably the tightening of security at commercial spots. “With CCTV cameras in most commercial areas and metal detectors

becoming a norm, burglars are being cautious as to where they strike next, Their safest places to strike are now places of worship which have minimal security,” they say. The Cyberabad police say that though they have intensified their night patrolling following a series of house burglaries, these thugs study the patrolling method and sneak in during the interval, it seems. A detective sub-inspector attached to the Cyberabad police told this paper that burglars are keeping an eagle eye on the patrolling teams and that is how they are able to strike without being detected or caught.

50-year-old farmer was electrocuted while he was talking over the phone that was plugged in for charging at his residence at Annojiguda of Kandukur mandal on Tuesday morning. The victim, D Ramulu, was found unconscious with burnt fingers by his wife around 6 am on Tuesday. She along with her neighbours rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police said that the mishap occurred due to a short circuit. This problem is not only seen in China-made mobile phone but also in established brands. Some time back, Nokia had recalled its BL-5C series batteries due to technical difficulties. Due to the device being in close proximity to the body, even a small short-circuit can cause death.

Don’t use incompatible/unauthorised cell phone batteries and chargers. Don’t tamper with the battery or allow it to be punctured, crushed, or come into contact with metal objects. Avoid damaging the phone by dropping it, keeping it where it can become heated or wet. Follow instructions for battery usage, storage, and charging.

he city is gearing up for one more big fat wedding. As a prelude and in conformity with customs, the engagement function is slated for December 1. The best part of the engagement of Tollywood star Ram Charan Teja and Upasana Kamineni, granddaughter of Apollo Hospitals’ chairman Prathap C Reddy is that even the invites are barcoded. A code reader would decipher the bars and only then the invitee will be let in. What if the invitee doesn’t bring the card? No issues. Meticulous businessman and a cautious doctor that he has

always been, Reddy has ensured that a committee of senior executives of his organisations, under the direct supervision of the CEO of Apollo Hospitals C Hariprasad, identify and usher the guests into the venue. Special committees were constituted with senior staff members of Apollo to man the different tasks as also the venue. A senior executive said, “Dr Reddy treats us like his family members. We get gifts on his birthday every year. So, we are happy to participate in the event.” The family hosted a mega marriage event just a couple

of days ago in Chennai for the Dr Reddy’s grandson (son of Sunita Reddy). Arrangements are in full swing at Golconda Resorts, near the Golconda Fort, with security personnel and event management company taking over the premises. As many as 1,000 invitation cards were distributed to the guests. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and several VIPs, including business tycoons and politicians, have been invited for the engagement function. Sources indicated that only one event management was engaged to manage the show of the star-studded event.

he CBI court on Tuesday gave three days custody of Y Srilakshmi the senior IAS officer, to the CBI. She was arrested on Monday in connection with the Obulapuram Mining scam and was produced before the CBI court in Nampally. Before bringing her to the court, the CBI officials had got a medical checkedup done as she is said to be a heart patient. A large crowd had gathered in the court compound and tight police security was provided. Srilakshmi will be in judicial custody till December 12 while she will be with the CBI till 4pm on December 1. Srilakshmi is accused number 4 in the mining case involving Gali Janardhana Reddy, and his brother-in-law BV Srinivas Reddy and former mines director Rajagopal. The charge sheet in the case has to be filed by December 4 by the CBI. The main charge against Srilakhsmi is that she granted the mining lease of 68.5 hectares to OMC in Obaulapuram village of Anantapur district by dropping the phrase captive mining for the GO before granting the lease.

Advantage Karthika, deuce Owaisi! The contract marriage between the Congress and the MIM to rule the GHMC in turn seems to be on the rocks as the mayor keeps the MIM guessing with just four days to hand over mayoralty to it. Postnoon finds out the mayor’s strength Inkeshaf Ahmed

T

he Mayor Karthika Chandra Reddy who belongs to the Congress is sitting pretty. With just four days left to hand over the mayoral baton to the ruling partner MIM as per the agreement, she shows no hurry to act. The reason, say knowledgeable sources, is the law itself. According to Section 91 of GHMC Act-1955 no no-confidence motion can be moved within three years from the date of assuming office of the mayor or deputy mayor. Reddy is completing two years by December 3 and she is supposed to have resigned a month ago to facilitate election of a new mayor from MIM for the next two years. The Congress-MIM agreement is 2+2+1 or two years each to the Congress and the

MIM and again the last year to the Congress. The MIM chief Akbaruddin Owaisi had to write to the chief minister “reminding” him of the agreement. Despite that the mayor has not indicated her mind. Owaisi then met the PCCI chief Botsa Satyanarayana who had requested the MIM for an extension of one more year to the Congress. Owaisi has refused. “I still hope the

Congress will honour the agreement,” Owaisi says with a tinge of desperation. The power corridors of the GHMC are abuzz with versions that Karthika has two other options if she wants to stick to the position. One is that she could up her ante against the Congress leaders who are vociferous in her quitting and if push comes to shove could even cross over to the convenient refuge — the TRS

awed Jawed looks just like his posters depict him. His healthy crop of hair and bewitching smile strike you instantly. He is a man with a visionary approach “Today, people know me, but during my student years, I was clueless. I did my hotel management and then masters in French in JNU, Delhi. After my studies, my dad got me admitted to a hair school in London and told me I could continue if I liked or quit and do whatever I felt like.” He smiles as he recalls his past. “Once I went there everything changed for me. I was an introvert— shy and preferred being completely to me — but my hair styling school not just awakened my passion for hair styling, but also changed me as a person. Today, I am a people’s person and love interacting. Not just that, I am a trainer too!” What does he feel about

his vocation? “There is no rocket science. I think I am a combination of business acumen, passion for styling and have the human touch to go with it. I feel I have the knack of styling my business and people have it loved it that way.” What does he say about his company not being attached to NGO or charity works? “I have taken a barber’s role to a higher level, is it not a great contribution?” he asks teasingly. “I have taken salons to rural areas and have given free classes on hair styling, don’t you think that’s enough apart from the fact that my development has impacted the entire styling industry.” Asked if the hair style over-rated today, he answers, “Not at all, today just like the whole world is growing so is the fashion industry.” He continues with a question, “When you wake up every morning, the first thing youdo is tie your hair properly, isn’t it? India has now woken up hair education and continues to evolve for the better.

Now, even after three years if a no trust vote is to be moved, it requires two-third majority of the generally body. If for some reasons, the motion could not be carried for want of quorum no more motion could be pressed for one year.

he Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) is all set to replicate Parliament situation in the Winter Session of Assembly beginning from December 1, it is learnt. Jamming the proceedings to disallow any business transaction is going to happen, a leader told Postnoon. “We

separate statehood for Telangana, or we will obstruct the House.” The TRS will also support a no-confidence motion proposed to be moved by the main Opposition Telugu Desam against the Kiran Kumar Reddy Government. But the TRS leaders say in the same breath that they do not believe the TDP was sincere in moving a no-trust vote.

Land probe to set Assembly floor ablaze

T

he decision to review all past land allocation since 2004 has sent a chill down the spine of all political parties, and political circles believe, would become the most scalding issue in the Assembly Session. This along with the proposed TDP-sponsored no-confidence motion and TRS threat to jam the Assembly will keep the government on its toes.

Meanwhile, Speaker Nadendla Manohar has rejected 61 of the resignations submitted earlier and accepted 4. Fourteen resignations are still pending with the Speaker. The accepted resignations are Jupalli Krishna Rao, Gampa Goverdhan, Jogu Ramanna and T Rajaiah. These four of them have crossed over to TRS from the Congress .

They say the TDP was only issuing threats to the Kiran Kumar Reddy Government as its president N Chandrababu Naidu is facing many inquiries. Meanwhile, the Congress MLAs who had joined Jagan Mohan Reddy, have begun to return to the Congress fold one by one. “We are not going to

back the no-trust move,” said Adinarayana Reddy one of the MLAs. His words are straws in the wind. The TDP believes the YSR Congress can’t go against the Congress as it has many troubles from varied agencies controlled by the Central government. But the TDP leadership

insists that it will move the notrust vote. “We will move the no-confidence motion against the government on the farmers’ issues, as well as on its anti-people policies,” TDP politburo members K Yerran Naidu said. However, the no-confidence motion is not likely to pose any threat to the ruling Congress government, as the TDP has only 83 members in the 294-member AP Assembly. If the TRS supports the noconfidence motion, as promised, another 12 members could be added to the tally. The CPI has four and the CPM has one MLA and they have not yet taken a stand on the no-trust vote. The lone Lok Satta Party MLA N Jayaprakash Narayan announced that he would support the no-confidence motion against the government.

10K run kicks up a row If the popular 10k run is good for health how come we create a stifling ambience is the question the greens in the City ask Sudeshna Koka and Inkeshaf Ahmed feedback@postnoon.com

“Y

ou can buy bottled water but what of our dumb friends? Where will the birds and animals quench their thirst if our water sources are polluted and dried up?” ask leaders of the Carbon Credit Race angrily after seeing the sea of plastic wastes generated by the recent 10K run. “Every year there is a massive plastic waste which litters the Necklace Road area and Hussain Sagar Lake. Last year after the event, we collected about 500 kgs of plastic waste

and showed it to the organisers who refused to take any responsibility,” says WG Prasanna Kumar, director, National Green Corps. The 10 kilometer stretch of the marathon track has been strewn with water bottles and plastic carry bags which the young activists of the Carbon Credit tried to clean up. With the 10K run event getting bigger with each passing year, the waste generated is also increasing. As many as 100 GHMC workers under the guidance of ITC along with scores of rag pickers had to struggle for hours trying to clean up Peoples Plaza after the event. For the past few years,

National Green Corps and Carbon Credit Race have been fighting for a greener 10K run and other such related events. However, they’ve been met with failure each time due to lack of co-operation. This year, they sought help from the HMDA and requested the organisers to reduce the usage of plastic and use alternatives. Not only that, they have also filed a petition regarding this in the High court. “We approached the event organisers a month in advance with a proposal of serving water in steal and paper glasses and they agreed to. However, one day before the event they went back on their promise and sur-

prisingly sponsored water bottles at the event,” said S Mahender, organiser of Carbon Credit Race, state coordinator of climate leader India. “Our efforts and campaigns may not have yielded positive results this year but we are confident that by next year we will turn the 10K run into a green event,” he added. The 400 odd volunteers of the Carbon Credit Race tried to divert the attention of the participants from the bottled water by serving water in paper cups and reusable tumblers, but participants chose bottled water. “We did our best to stop the participants and organisers

from using plastic. Since the bottled water was sponsored, participants took undue advantage and misused them by using the water for washing their hands and playing around with the half filled bottles,” said Mahender. “Adding to the woes certain software companies went about distributing their T-shirts in plastic covers which further contaminated the lake,” Mahender added. Greens in the City have said that while they admired the 10k run for health reasons they would strive to make it a green run from next year. After all how would it help if it only dirtied our surroundings.

Youngsters kidding around near the canteen, avid theatre enthusiasts rehearsing their scripts, musicians strumming away at their guitars and some people just chilling with a gang of friends — all under one roof, says Aishwarya Yerra

Lamakaan - home for all W

hen you enter Lamakaan you are stuck with a feeling of déjà vu — like you are stepping into a scene of your university life. Students littered around, tapping away on their keyboards, and reading thick books in intense concentration. Sit there for hours to an end, doing your thing and not a soul will disturb you. Situated in a galli opposite GVK One, Lamakaan is essentially an old Nizami bungalow that has been converted into an open cultural space. Founded by Elahe Hiptoola, Ashraf Farhan, Humera Farhan and Biju Mathew 18 months ago, Lamakaan is truly a one-of-its-kind place. In Arabic, the word lamakaan means homeless. But here in Hyderabad, nestled in a quiet corner in

Bajara Hills, LaMakaan has become a home for artistes of every kind. It is a favourite haunt for theatre groups not only because it gives them ample place to practice but also it has a stage in its compound that the groups can use for their performances for free. The best part about it is that they offer sound and light equipment for no cost for their performances. As a result, umpteen theatre groups have got a platform to showcase their plays and performances. It has a manager who helps out with the setting too. Other theatrical venues are too expensive for amateur theatre groups and therefore Lamakaan has been the ideal stepping stone for them. They get to hone their skills by showcasing their art to a few hundred people before getting their wings

“I

have been coming here since the very beginning. I come here often to work because the atmosphere here helps me concentrate. It is so much focussed here with a lot of peace and quietude. I enjoy the debates, plays and music gigs. The two things that make Hyderabad unique from other cities are Irani chai and Lamakaan.” Emanuel, Freelance writer, Ethiopian national.

“I

come here very regularly with my classmates to do group studies. It is a real boon to have free Wi-Fi. Also I am from AIESEC and we hold our department meets here because it is one of the few places that offer space.” Suvarchana, student, AIESEC member.

and making it big. Lamakaan can seat a maximum of 350 and this includes people sitting on the parapets during performances of good plays. It has also provided place for aspiring film-makers to screen their short films. It has given them the opportunity to meet fellow short filmmakers and form cinema clubs and hold mini-short film festivals that got them a lot of publicity as well as accolades. Musicians have also been able to benefit through the gigs they hold every month. Lamakaan has been the birthplace for events like PechaKucha — chitchat nights where people from different fields talk about their professions — and Ignite Hyderabad, a concept on similar lines. Also Debate Central is held every month where people can enjoy open debates. Lamakaan has given an

excellent opportunity for networking not only socially but also professionally. Every second Saturday, startups hold discussions where they help one another out by exchanging notes on managerial, taxation, HR and other enterpriserelated issues. What makes Lamakaan even more ‘cool’ is that it offers free Wi-Fi. So one can just sit on some quaint wooden chair with marbletop tables and connect your laptop to the Wi-Fi and surf with no restrictions whatsoever coming in the way. And not to mention the awesome canteen which serves lip-smacking samosas and mirchi bajjis along with authentic Irani chai. It also serves food like dal chawal, kheema, subzi and refreshments like lemonade – all at a very low cost. Samosas are the celebrities of the

L a M a k a a n

menu at Lamakaan. You may wonder how the place sustains itself considering its expenses. Donations by the founders and some anonymous donors and the little profits earned from the canteen help run the place. When you visit Lamakaan, you can’t help but appreciate the people who founded the place. It was the brainchild of Ashraf Farhan who inherited the house and property from his uncle. He wanted Hyderabad to have a place where intervention in a cultural space where artists can unleash the creativity within them, hence the birth of Lamakaan. His wife Humera is the heart of Lamakaan, visiting it every day to ensure that things are running smoothly. Filled with passion, creativity, fun, learning, art and founded with love, it is safe to say there is no place like LaMakaan.

“I

t is a place that has majorly impacted theatre. It has given a platform to amateur theatre groups to gain their foothold. A lot of documentaries have been shot here. From the past six months I have been working from Lamakaan itself.” Sriram Karri, Writer. Quote from one of the founders always wanted a place where I could meet up with friends and watch a play and spend time. There so many experimental plays which have great potential but not are not commercially feasible. So Lamakaan is an institution for these projects.” Ashraf Farhan

Sensex sheds 98 points at opening MUMBAI: The BSE benchmark Sensex fell by over 98 points in opening trade on Tuesday as participants booked profits registered during yesterday’s rally in the domestic market. However, a firming trend on other Asian bourses, in tandem with overnight gains in the US, capped the losses here. The 30-share barometer, which surged by 471.70 points in the previous session, declined by 98.37 points, or 0.61 per cent, to 16,068.76 in opening trade on Tuesday. The wide-based NSE Nifty index also followed suit, declining by 20.60 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 4,830.70.They said mounting opposition to the government’s move to permit foreign direct investment (FDI) in the multi-brand retail sector also dampened the sentiment. The Indian rupee moved up marginally by 4 paise to Rs 51.91 per US dollar in morning trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, tracking gains registered by the euro overseas against the American currency. Forex dealers said dollar weakness against the euro and other currency rivals overseas and a higher opening in the domestic stock market supported the Indian rupee’s rise. The rupee rose by 30 paise to close at a one-week high of Rs 51.95/96 against the dollar in the previous session on fresh dollarselling by exporters.

All-party meet on FDI ends, but impassé continues NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday chaired an all-party meeting to arrive at a consensus over allowing foreign direct investment (FDI) in the retail sector. However, consensus remained elusive and reatil stocks went up on the arrival of news. The Opposition stalled both Houses of Parliament, resulting in their adjournment till noon. The meeting at the parlia-

ment annexe is being attended by opposition parties like Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Left, AIADMK, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party as well as the Congress and its allies like the Trinamool Congress and DMK. The meeting is being seen as an effort by the government to reach out to the opposition as five days of parliament’s winter session have been lost

GVK Bio partners Temple University HYDERABAD: GVK Biosciences (GVK BIO), Asia’s leading drug discovery research and development organization, has announced that it has entered into a drug discovery alliance with the Moulder Centre for Drug Discovery Research at Temple University in Philadelphia in USA. As part of the multi-year integrated drug discovery collaboration, GVK BIO will be responsible for the target validation, lead identification and lead optimization of small molecules in selected therapeutic areas, including cardiovascular, metabolic, and central nervous system disorders.

FDI helps retail: Ramesh Datla K Prudhvi Raju

HYDERABAD: “We cannot solve all problems. If you see industry analogy, when India opened up for liberalisation 15 years ago, the industry did not let government open the markets saying that this would damage small-scale industries which in turn effects the larger employment section. “The same situation is happening even to retail now. But later, industry grew and got benefited. They were the biggest beneficiaries of the policy change. Same thing is going happen even to retail,” Ramesh Datla, chairman, CII’s National MSME Council, told Postnoon. Talking about traders concerns, he said all could not be satisfied when there was a change. Though some people would get affected, long-term benefits should be taken into consideration. Traders had to adapt them-

selves to other practices like moving away from being retailers to suppliers. The FDI in multi-brand retail would be only impacting the cities. As many as 30 per cent of SMEs in the country would be impacted by this decision. SMEs, according to him, need not be manufacturing units. There would be a lot of opposition initially, but it would all change in due course. In Indian demographics, retail was everywhere. The opening up of FDI would affect 20 per cent of retail business in urban areas. Datla gave the example of Metro Cash & Carry saying that the retailers, who used to source stocks from multiple places, were now dependent on a single-point wholesaler under one roof. They were benefitted a lot. The ultimate beneficiary with the opening up of FDI would be the consumer.

Ebony Gautier retail in Jubilee Hills HYDERABAD: Ebony Gautier inaugurated the first outlet in Hyderabad taking its count to five stores in India. The new outlet was inaugurated by Abhijeet Mitra CEO Ebony Gautier and David Soulard, CEO and Managing Director, Gautier. The store is located in Jubilee Hills and spread across 8,500 sq. ft. Ebony, one of the pioneers of lifestyle retailing in India has joined hands with Gautier of France, one of the best known

without transacting any major business. The winter session is slated to end Dec 21. Government sources said the meeting was convened to focus upon the issue of FDI in retail, which has become the bone of contention with not only the opposition but also allies of the government. Other issues on the agenda in the winter session like pending legislations will also be taken up, the sources said.

furniture brands in the world to set up Home adornment stores in India. These stores spread between 20,000 to 40,000 square feet of prime retail space would offer the consumer the latest themes of contemporary styled Furniture along with Home Furnishing and Home Décor products. The Noida store was the first showroom which has just been launched under this new retail vertical initiative. Sharing the company vision

in a press conference David Soulard CEO and Abhijeet Mitra Ceo Ebony Gautier said , “We have been doing well in the department store format, but the time has come for us to take the next big step and expand into specialty retailing. We plan to enter various specialty formats and we are starting this process with our entry in the Home adornment vertical where we are partnering with Gautier of France”.

This would also open up opportunities to people who dropped out of colleges and who passed out class X and were in need of employment.

The Indian retail pie is growing The FDI could not take market share in one go. They could not even take 10 per cent in 10

years in the Indian retail market. Small retailers could coexist with big players. In a way, the FDI would also push the small retailers to be more organised. Introduction of FDI in developing countries like China, Mexico and Brazil made the unorganised retail sector to be healthier than before, said Jay Galla, CII, Andhra Pradesh. The retail market in the country today was expected to be about $ 475 billion. Out of which, organised retail was only about six to seven per cent. This is going to go up to $ 1,250 billion by 2020. The share of organised retail sector would be $ 260 billion that constitutes 21 per cent of the whole retail. Unorganised retailers would still be around 80 per cent of $ 1,250 billon. They will continue to grow and play a significant role with an organised sector, according to T T Ashok, Chairman, CII, Southern Region.

A critical look at games and players

12

Wenger fires warning to City B ig-spending City have romped to the top of the table, where they hold a five-point advantage over Manchester United following a 1-1 draw at Liverpool. Roberto Mancini’s men are already being lauded as champions in waiting, many suggesting they could emulate Wenger’s Invincibles team of 2003/2004. However, Wenger said, “You have to go through the whole winter when you play in the Champions League — we did that. In the FA Cup as well, the semi-finals of the Champions League — to do that together is very difficult. It [an unbeaten league campaign] looks unlike-

ly, but you never know. You can never really doubt.” He added, “However, in the modern game you need a bit of luck — watching the game against Liverpool they could have been beaten. “Overall hopefully for us not, because we want to get as close as possible to them and it is important to beat them.” Wenger added on Arsenal Player, “Financially it is impossible to compete with them. On the football pitch it is possible. Our squad has more experience and I am confident we can show that. “We are still a young team. The success of this club is based on the development of young

players and we still want to show that.” Tuesday night could see the return of Samir Nasri to face his former employers for the first time since a somewhat acrimonious £24million switch to City at the end of August. Wenger, though, holds no grudges. He said, “I hope Samir gets a good reception. I don’t know if he will play but personally I want every player who has played for us to be respected when they come back. “Samir improved tremendously while he was with us. He has developed fantastically well from a non-scoring player to a guy who could make a decision.” EVENING STANDARD

Kean to meet not-sokeen fans

B

lackburn manager Steve Kean says he is ready to meet some of the club’s disgruntled fans if required to do so. The Ewood Park outfit are bottom of the Barclays Premier League and a section of Rovers supporters have for some time been staging protests against Kean, calling for him to be sacked. “I will always take direction from other people at the club more qualified than me to organise something like that,” the 44-year-old said ahead of Tuesday’s Carling Cup quarter-final at Cardiff. “But if it is going to happen, then I would be available to do that.” Asked if he thought such a move was needed, Kean said, “I don’t know. “Possibly they might want access and want to know a little bit more about what is going on at Ewood. “I think there has been a lot of suggestion that they would like to know a little bit more about the organisation and the running of the club. That is not

my department, but I’m happy to talk on the football side.” One meeting Kean definitely has scheduled is with the club’s owners Venky’s, with whom he will be discussing potential January transfer window signings that might boost Blackburn’s ailing league campaign. “We’ve got a list and I will get a meeting with the owners in the next three or four days,” Kean said. “Hopefully we will be bringing in fresh faces and some quality in the window to compliment what we have ES already got.”

Arsene Wenger has warned Manchester City their biggest tests are yet to come as Arsenal look to knock the Barclays Premier League leaders out of the Carling Cup

Mancini hits out over schedule

M

anchester City boss Roberto Mancini claims it is little wonder England struggle in major tournaments when players sometimes get little respite between domestic fixtures. The Italian has expressed anger at his side’s schedule ahead of Tuesday night’s Carling Cup quarter-final at Arsenal, a match that will kick off around 50 hours after a draining Barclays Premier League clash at Liverpool ended. Mancini feels he has no choice but to play an entirely different side and has even threatened to send out junior team players if the situation arises again. He said, “We will change all the team because this is an incredible situation.” He added, “For this reason the national team arrives at European Championships and World Cups and they are dying — they do not have time to recover. “To play in two days, two games

like this, after a Champions League game, is incredible. I think the players should say something about this. “For the players it is important to play, but it is important also to recover, a minimum three days between one game and another.” Mancini’s comments echo similar sentiments expressed by Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, who must also prepare a side to play at Chelsea in the Carling Cup tomorrow. Mancini said, “I agree with him. “I think sometimes we should play with 11 young players, 14-15 years. It is not correct, this, not only for us but all the players.” Mancini would have been forced to leave out Gareth Barry and Mario Balotelli for the trip to the Emirates Stadium anyway with both now serving a one-game ban. Former England midfielder Owen Hargreaves, fit again after a minor calf injury and looking to resurrect his career with City, is one prominent ES player likely to feature.

A critical look at games and players

Weakened India still tough to beat CUTTACK: India’s previous home one-dayer took place in front of a sparse crowd at the Eden Gardens, reinforcing fears over the quantity of cricket being played, but with Tuesday’s match taking place at the smaller cricketing centre of Cuttack, a jam-packed stadium is expected, reports cricinfo.com. Even though the the biggest crowdpullers like Dhoni and Tendulkar are missing, tickets sales at the Barabati Stadium have been brisk, and even the practice sessions drew plenty of spectators. A full-strength India would be expected to roll over West Indies at home, but they are missing at least four of their headliners. In addition, they have lost the most experienced bowler in their squad, Praveen Kumar — he was ruled out of the first three one-dayers with an injury. That means the most seasoned of the quicks is Vinay Kumar, all of 11

one-dayers old, giving the standin captain Sehwag something of a challenge. India are also missing two of their finishers, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, giving the likes of Rohit Sharma an audition for a permanent place in the hugely competitive middle order. Despite India facing these hurdles, Darren Sammy has no illusions of the task ahead of his team, calling the series a “very, very tough challenge”. Australia are the only team to have won a one-day series in India since April 2005. West Indies are boosted by the arrival of Kieron Pollard, an impact player who can quickly transform matches, and Lendl Simmons, their most consistent one-day batsman of the year. Sunil Narine, the Trinidad & Tobago offspinner whose variations mystified batsmen in the Champions League T20, could also pose problems.

The two teams will fight for this trophy over five one-day international PTI matches, the first of which begins today (Tuesday) at Cuttack

Hamilton happy at McLaren troubled 2011 finally came to an end for Hamilton on Sunday in the kind of circumstances that were perhaps to be expected as he suffered the first mechanical retirement of the season at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Hamilton, whose current deal expires at the end of 2012, said: “What is most important for me next year is getting back to where I should be - to the good performances, to winning, to enjoying life, enjoying the year. I’m at a positive place within myself. Things are getting better, and I just want to continue on this path because it would be good.” He added: “I don’t think there’s any question of my commitment to the team, so there’s no real rush to have to do anything. I’ll just focus on the year.” Asked if he felt it was more than likely he would stay, Hamilton said: “Yeah, I do. I’m confident about that. “Martin has already spoken to me about re-signing, so I know it’s there at some point, and I guess at some stage when we have time we’ll sit down (to discuss it further).

“But the most important thing is to focus on the season ahead.” As Hamilton has been with the team since he was 13, team principal Whitmarsh feels it is hard to see him going anywhere else. “By his extraordinarily high

standards he has had a difficult year, but he’s in a positive place right now,” said Whitmarsh. “There is a deep affection between him and the team and I’m sure that love affair will carry on for many years to come.”

And Haye has confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in sport, telling the BBC’s Hardtalk programme: “I haven’t seen a contract but there’s definitely talks going on. I said before I retired I would love that fight and there’s a date in March that’s already been talked about.” The Ukrainian brothers always claimed negotiations had been taking place over a meeting with Vitali, the WBC champion, following Haye’s unification loss to IBF/WBO champion Wladimir in Hamburg earlier this year. Haye himself had already stated he had merely “retired from fighting anyone without the Klitschko surname’’ as he looks to redeem himself following a poor showing against Wladimir in the summer. The Englishman recently told Press Association Sport: “Only time will tell whether the Klitschkos need me more than I need them. “They won’t believe that they do but it depends what they

As reported by ABC News, the professional eater from Virginia consumed 5.25 pounds of turkey in 10 minutes as part of the first Wild Turkey 81 Eating World Championship in New York City. Thomas, who stands at five-foot-five and weighs 105 pounds, beat out six-foot-five, 400 pound Eric ‘Badlands’ Booker for the title. Booker ate 4.3 pounds of turkey, nearly a pound less than the Alexandria native. Thomas is famous for her size and her standing in the competitive eating world. and not eat until she finds the dog, Corona said in an email. She listed her phone number and multiple pictures of Chispita on her signs. “Against my family’s wishes, I will be skipping my family Thanksgiving celebration this year and standing out there alone in an effort to be reunited with my dog,” she said. “Thanksgiving won’t be the same without Chispita.” Cars honked and men whistled and shouted cat-calls at the woman as she held up her sign, wearing red pumps, a white bikini top and blue bikini bottom — the nation’s colours, she said, to represent military personnel coming home. She hopes the same will be true of her dog. A maintenance worker in her La Jolla apartment complex told Corona that he saw a girl take the dog. Corona believes that if the dog was stolen, whoever took it may be too afraid to return it.

ovestruck farmers Michael Hanson and Hayley Morgan said ‘I moo’ during a cow-themed wedding. After meeting at a young farmers’ event, the couple wanted to tie the knot in a way that celebrated their country lives – and, after twoand-a-half years together, they certainly did it in style. Dressed in a pair of white wellies, the bride arrived at the church, in her home town of Llandefalle, Powys, aboard a 2.8-tonne tractor. After the service, it transported the happy couple to a muddy field at Hayley’s parents’ farm where they had a wedding portrait taken with a herd of cattle. The pair, from Eardisland, Herefordshire, had a British Blue-themed wedding cake on their big day in August. And at the reception, guests, who were directed to

tables named after different cows, enjoyed a four-course dinner of, you guessed it, roast beef. The couple honeymooned in the US state of Texas – the beef farming capital of the world – and spent three weeks touring farming enterprises. Hayley, 31, said ‘We didn’t want to be all prim and proper – we just wanted to be us and what we do every day. ‘I’ve never been to a wedding like ours but everyone said how great it was. We are really glad we did it the way we wanted to.’ Michael, 26, and Hayley – who also runs a part-time business selling rugs and accessories made from British hide – plan to spend their wedding money on a new herd of British Blue cattle. Hayley added ‘I always wanted to run a cattle-related business. This is my passion.’

3-D imaging for face transplantation R

By combining conventional medical imaging with some of the same 3-D modelling techniques used in Hollywood blockbusters

esults of a new study on human face transplantation, led by Darren M Smith, MD, plastic surgery resident at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC), were presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Devastating injuries or defects of the face are extremely challenging, if not impossible, to satisfactorily reconstruct by traditional surgical techniques. In face transplantation, facial tissue from a donor is transferred to reconstruct the defect, restore essential life-sustaining functions — such as breathing, chewing and speaking — and, above all, re-establish normal human appearance. “This surgery is for patients with devastating injuries to the face, who have lost their ability to smell, eat and engage socially and have no other conventional treatment options,” said Vijay S Gorantla, MD, PhD, administrative medical director of the Reconstructive Transplantation Programme at UPMC. Clearly defining and understanding the complex tissue deficits and defects that accompany devastating facial injuries like electric burns, blast wounds and accidental trauma are critical for both technical success and objective analysis of the return of

function after face transplantation. Medical imaging plays a major role in the entire spectrum of face transplantation, ranging from patient selection, donor and recipient surgical planning, and postoperative assessment of returning motor and sensory function. Face transplantation is a lengthy, complicated procedure that involves reconstruction of multiple tissues — such as skin, muscle, blood vessels, nerves and bone — by a team of surgeons. Currently, to prepare for facial transplantation, plastic or plaster models are first created based on 3-D CT or angiographic images or reconstruction. Following this, mock cadaveric dissections are performed to allow surgeons to plan for the donor and recipient surgeries. MRI and other imaging exams may also be used to provide supplemental information. By combining information from

multiple imaging exams and creating a sophisticated 3-D computer model, the researchers for this study were better able to assess the facial structure and contours, the underlying bone, muscles, nerves and vessels, as well as the extent of damage. Using sophisticated computer modelling software, doctors Smith and Gorantla, along with Joseph Losee, MD, integrated information from 3-D CT, CT angiography, MRI and high-definition tractography to create a 3-D model of the patient’s head and neck anatomy. The same type of modelling technology is often used in movies to animate computer-generated characters with detailed three-dimensional human features and realistic expressions. “We have integrated data from multiple imaging sources into a single 3-D representation that allows for real-time user interaction and modification,” Dr Smith said. “In assessing eligibility for this procedure, it is critical to understand whether the patient has enough blood vessels and bone structure to support new facial tissue. This 3-D modelling helps us customise the procedure to the patient’s individual anatomy so that the donor tissue will fit like a puzzle piece onto the patient’s face.” Using computer modelling, the team also overlaid the patient model with a polygon mesh of a generic human face.

Calorie diet ups heart function in obese diabetic

A

low-calorie diet eliminates insulin dependence and leads to improved heart function in obese patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). “Lifestyle interventions may have more powerful beneficial cardiac effects than medication in these patients,” said the study’s lead author, Sebastiaan Hammer, MD, PhD, from the Department of Radiology at Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands. “It is striking to see how a relatively simple intervention of a very low calorie diet effectively cures type 2 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, these effects are long term, illustrating the potential of this method.” Diabetes is a chronic illness in which there are high levels of glucose in the blood. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),

diabetes affects 25.8 million people in the US, with 18.8 million diagnosed cases and an estimated seven million undiagnosed cases. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes, representing 90 to 95 per cent of diagnosed cases among adults. Pericardial fat is a visceral fat compartment around the heart that can be detrimental to cardiac function, especially in people with metabolic disease. Dr Hammer and colleagues set out to determine the long-term effects of initial weight loss induced by caloric restriction on pericardial fat and cardiac function in obese patients with type 2 diabetes. Using cardiac MRI, the researchers analysed cardiac function and pericardial fat in 15 patients—including seven men and eight women — with type 2 diabetes before and after four months of a diet consisting of 500 calories daily. Changes in body mass index (BMI)

were also measured. The results showed that caloric restriction resulted in a decrease in BMI from 35.3 to 27.5 over four months. Pericardial fat decreased from 39 millilitres (ml) to 31 ml, and E/A ratio, a measure of diastolic heart function, improved from 0.96 to 1.2. After an additional 14 months of follow-up on a regular diet, BMI increased to 31.7, but pericardial fat only increased slightly to 32 ml. E/A ratio after follow-up was 1.06. “Our results show that 16 weeks of caloric restriction improved heart function in these patients,” Dr Hammer said. “More importantly, despite regain of weight, these beneficial cardiovascular effects were persistent over the long term.” Dr Hammer pointed out that these findings stress the importance of including imaging strategies in these types of therapy regimens.

Holistic view of mind, body and soul

Shed those glasses for a confident new you

Fatty liver disease has no affect on longevity

S

Tired of being taunted for that bespectacled look and have no patience for contact lenses? You might want to give implantable lenses a chance Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

A

ll your life you’ve been one of those people who was first made fun of for your geeky glasses and later called a nerd. Now that you’ve outgrown that awkward phase, the glasses still bother you as you want to now shed those ‘four eyes’ and explore a world where you can step out confidently with perfect vision and attractively made up eyes. However, you don’t want to take your chances with a Lasik surgery, given all the complications and side effects it curtails. Nor do you want to wear contact lenses for life, given the extreme care and hygiene conditions they require. In such a scenario you might want to consider intraocular lens implants to rectify your vision. Known as Phakic intraocular lenses (PIOL) these lenses are made of a special plastic known as collamer and can be implanted in the eye for a perfect vision. Unlike other regular contact lenses these PIOLs are implanted permanently in a patient’s eye and effectively restore perfect 6/6 vision. What’s best is that they require no maintenance and the procedure doesn’t require hospitalisation either. “PIOLs are permanent contact lenses that are injected into the eye. Usually implanted in an outpatient procedure under local or general anaes-

18

Dr Kasu Prasad Reddy thesia. We make a temporal incision on the limbus (the area where the black and white parts of the eye meet) of about 3 mm width. Through this incision we inject the lens

which then spreads and opens to offer full vision. We usually tuck it behind the pupil and it is not visible externally like other contact lenses. The advantage in this procedure is that the cornea is not touched at all,” says Dr Kasu Prasad Reddy, CEO, Maxivision Eye Hospitals. One of the advantages of getting PIOLs implanted is that they can be done for anybody with an eyesight power of -1 to -18 or -20. “This lens is made with a special plastic called collamer. It is biologically friendly and once implanted you don’t even feel it. Also because it is made specially there is no scope for reactions or allergies. Usually people with problems like dry

eyes and infections cannot wear contact lenses. However, with PIOLs there is no such limitation,” explains Dr Reddy, adding, “Post-surgery care is also not too complicated. We prescribe antibiotic drops and steroid drops for a limited period of time and advise patients not too rub their eyes the first few days.” Concerns like changing vision with age are also not an issue. “Once these lenses have been implanted there is no problem. After the age of 40 people anyway need reading glasses and people with PIOLs only need to wear reading glasses with no other change. Even when people who develop cataract with age don’t have cause for worry. We can remove the PIOL, remove the cataract and place intraocular lenses that are meant for patients who’ve had cataract operations,” says Dr Reddy. The price however, might be a stumbling block. Regular spherical lenses cost anywhere between `30,000 to `32,000 per lens, while toric lenses cost `35,000 per lens. With the cost of surgery, hospital fees etc the entire procedure can cost up to `1.5 lakh for both the eyes. However, given the convenience of being spectacles free for a lifetime, it might just be worth the cause.

urprisingly, fatty liver disease that targets the obese or patients of heart disease poses no risk to one’s longevity. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common condition tied with obesity and heart disease, undermining health and longevity. But a new study by researchers suggests the condition does not affect survival, the British Medical Journal reports. “Physicians have considered fatty liver disease a really worrisome risk factor for cardiovascular disease,” says Mariana Lazo, postdoctoral fellow at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “Our data analysis shows this doesn’t appear to be the case. We were surprised to say the least because we expected to learn by how much non-alcoholic fatty liver disease increased the risk of death...,” adds Lazo, who led the study.

Using data from survey of 11,371 Americans between 1994 and 1998 who were followed for up to 18 years as part of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), researchers checked liver enzyme levels and ultrasound tests for evidence of NAFLD. They ultimately looked at death rates associated with NAFLD. The participants were aged between 20 and 74 years during the survey years, according to a Hopkins statement. The Hopkins team found no increase in mortality among those with NAFLD, which was identified in 20 percent of the NHANES participants. IANS

About stars, actors, and a bit of fun

THE ROLE I PLAY

IS THE MOST IMPORTANT

Taniya Talukdar taniya.t@postnoon.com

I

f in your growing up years, you have been a part of the Doordarshan era, you will definitely not forget Byomkesh Bakshi, the fictional Bengali detective who went around solving cases. Rajit Kapur was the face behind the name. Tell him that you will always remember him as Byomkesh Bakshi and the unperturbed actor replies, “Everyone does,” going on to add, “That was one of my earlier works and something that I liked. I haven’t done television in 10 years now and I don’t see

myself going back to it. Television has become repetitive and boring.” There are no frills attached to Rajit, what you see is what you get. He minces no words while talking to you and is always to the point when it comes to answering your queries. The actor who was seen in the recently released film Dam 999 was initially signed up for a smaller role but things changed once he got on board. “The role got stretched but I was happy doing it since I had free time on my hands then,” informs Rajit who was not sure what was in store for him when he signed up for it. “I knew the director, Sohan Roy, was attempting something difficult but I was mostly concerned with my role which

Rajit Kapur, who was once a permanent fixture in Shyam Benegal’s films isn’t too big a fan of commercial cinema and prefers to keep it that way

had to be exciting,” offers Rajit going on to add, “But it was nice to be a part of a 3D film which is my first and interestingly the cast belonged to different parts of the country and the world too. Sohan wanted to have national award winning technicians on board which went on to show the magnitude of the film.” Rajit plays the role of a Malayali Brahmin in the film which is not his first, he had in fact played a Brahmin earlier too in a Malayalam film but here the challenge was the age. “Here the dynamics were different, I had to

play the role of a 60-year-old man who was into Astronomy and Ayurveda. He strongly believes in the age old practices, and I did not want it to be a caricature,” quips Rajit. The film also told the story of his family and emphasised on old Indian traditions and also included the Navarasas. “The film has a lot of things rolled into one and there were a lot of challenges to overcome,” shares Rajit. For the veteran actor, the role is of utmost importance when it comes to signing a film, he says, “My role in the film is the deciding factor for me to do the film or not. The people associated with it also play a significant role but then my reason to do a particular film can also be as stupid as Fiji Islands. Suppose the film is to be shot in Fiji Islands for a month, I will do it. There should be some element of excitement.” For Rajit, two mediums of expression are very important — theatre and cinema and he is actively involved with theatre. “Theatre has always been a passion, I even own a theatre company and we are always part of the different theatre festivals,” clarifies Rajit who prefers to stay away from commercial cinema due to the lack of right roles. “The roles that are offered to me are that of a brother or a father and I don’t know what to do in those roles. If someone tells me to do something definite then I can, otherwise it’s quite silly,” he says. But Rajit is happy about the future of theatre in India since he sees a lot of youngsters getting into it. He has a piece of advice though for aspiring theatre actors, “Complement it with another source of income since theatre is not enough to pay your bills.”

‘Disability’ is the new big screen mantra

I

f Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par (TZP) triggered a ripple of social consciousness vis-a-vis autism, three women have come to IFFI this year armed with scripts and story ideas, aimed to carpet bomb the “intellectual disability” cause further. Shalini Gupta, Neena Wagh and Kusum Tiwari — all mothers of intellectually disabled children — will conduct a special workshop for potential filmmakers and scriptwriters at the ongoing 42nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in order to create a wave of social awareness about the

n a tragic incident, Brazilian documentary director Oscar Marron Filho suffered a cardiac arrest during an interactive session on Sunday afternoon and died later at a local hospital. IFFI director Shankar Mohan said that as a mark of respect for the Brazilian director the film parties scheduled on Sunday would be cancelled and the playing of loud music would be stopped. Filho, 56, whose film Mario Filho: A Creator of Crowds, based on famed Brazilian journalist and writer Mario Filho, was screened as a part of a special package on soccer films, was speaking during Open Forum, an interactive session with delegates on Sunday when he suddenly suffered a heart attack. After a few minutes of chaos, the ailing Filho was rushed to the Goa Medical College and hospital located some distance from Panaji, where he succumbed. IANS

needs of children suffering from intellectual disabilities like autism, down syndrome and cerebral palsy. “We have come to Goa with real story ideas, which we will share with potential film-makers and scriptwriters. There are many more stories like Taare Zameen Par, Paa and My Name Is Khan that remain untold and there is a dire need to make films on other aspects of intellectual disability,” Gupta said. The trio are a part of Saath, a loosely strung Delhi-based non-registered collective of 250-odd parents who have specially abled children, spread across India and abroad. “Our main problem is the lack of awareness, when it comes to intellectual disabilities.” IANS

Film Panchvati introduced me to Buddhism

A

ctress Deepti Naval’s association with Buddhism as an adult dates back to her movie Panchvati, based on a short story by writer Kusum Ansal in 1985. She says she believes in the religion as it teaches to “live and let live”. “I was back after graduating from New York, and Panchvati took me to Japan where it was screened at a festival. After the festival, I visited Hiroshima and from there took off to island Miyajima. I was roaming around the island with my camera when I heard chanting. It was most mesmerising,” Naval said. “I was completely taken up, somebody said it was Buddhist chanting. It was completely contrasting to the jostling in temples,” added the 54-year-old who is here for the four-day Global Buddhist Congregation 2012 that started Sunday. The movie adapted from the short story, Ek Aur Panchvati, narrates the tale of a Sadhavi, a painter from Nepal who eventually takes to Thangka paintings at the Pashupatinath Temple after a failed marriage. “In the early eighties, there was no sign of Buddhism in India, the idea of peaceful chant in a temple this was wow. I returned and started reading Buddha’s teachings which influenced me — I constantly try to maintain a calm soul and try not to become agitated,” IANS she added.

Britney Spears loves her kitchen

P

op star Britney Spears says the kitchen is the centre of her home and she loves spending time there. The 29-year-old, who has sons Sean Preston, six, and Jayden James, five, with ex-husband Kevin Federline, has a very traditional home. “My house is very tra-

ditional. And I love ‘shabby chic’. It has a very homey-cosy vibe,” a website quoted Spears as saying. “We spend a lot of time in the kitchen actually, maybe my kids will be doing their homework or that kind of thing when they get home from school. I love my kitchen,” she added. IANS

ustralian singer Dannii Minogue, who has 16-month-old son Ethan, wants to have another child. The 40-yearold, who is recovering after being diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, admits she and partner Kris Smith have discussed the “possibility” of having another child. “There’s the possibility of a bigger brood. The main thing has been getting my health back on track. But I do look at other little babies and think, ‘Aww it’d be nice to experience that again.’ So yeah,” a website quoted Minogue as saying. At 64, Schwarzenegger wants to do stunts himself

H

ollywood action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger may be 64, but he refuses to use a stuntman and insists on doing is own stunts. Arnold has been filming Last Stand in New Mexico for nearly two months. A website reports that the sources said that AS has politely declined the producers’ offer to put stuntmen in the dangerous scenes, because he thinks it’s just more

believable for him to do it himself. In the film, among other things, in one scene he’s driving a Camaro, dragging a “bad guy behind” — even though the scene involves crazy driving, it seems the bad guy is the one who needs a double. Arnold is also doing a scene where he’s suspended high above the ground by ropes and reports say this scene is IANS dangerous.

ctor Robin Williams has opened up about his honeymoon and says the romantic break with his new bride was “wonderful”. The 60-year-old married graphic designer Susan Schneider in an intimate ceremony in St Helena, California on October 23 and the couple flew to Europe for a vacation following the nuptials. “I was just there (France) for my honeymoon. It was wonderful, it was lovely, so great to be there,” a IANS website quoted Williams as saying.

he Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood says he was “extremely sad” while recording for Happy Feet 2 without Brittany Murphy, who died suddenly in 2009. The Lord of the Rings star reprised his role of animated penguin Mumble in the movie, but he was upset the late actress could not be there to voice Gloria again, reports a website. “I worked very closely with Brittany Murphy on the first movie. We’d all had time to accept her passing and emotionally deal with it by the time we started recording this film, but it was extremely sad,” he said. The 30-year-old, however, thought her replacement Pink, whose real name is Alecia Moore, was “great” in the film, especially considering it was her first ever movie role. He added, “I guess it was a bit strange that first day but the energy was focused on Pink being the new character. We didn’t come into it thinking about how awkward it was going to be, we just went in there and worked with this new person, who was great. “She had never played a character in a film so it was fun to watch her go through that for the first time and enjoy it.” Happy Feet 2 will release December 2 in Britain. irls Aloud singer Sarah Harding ended her four-yearold relationship with DJ Tom Crane after coming out from rehab. “Sarah has come back with a whole new attitude to life. She’s full of energy and sparkle and realised she needed to move forwards and not go backwards,” a website quoted a source as saying. “She met with Tom(Crane) and said she had come to the decision things just were

never going to work out. Sarah wanted to come back and start again without any pressure or major decisions on her shoulders. Tom was gutted but agreed it was probably for the best that they parted ways,” source added. IANS

About stars, actors, and a bit of fun

Sculpting an epic Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

I

t takes us a moment to believe that Sri Rama Rajyam was his first film as an art director. One would easily mistake that the sets were probably designed by an experienced art director like Thotta Tharani. Such was the grandeur of Sri Rama's palace. Meet Manne Kiran Kumar, the sculptor behind the mammoth sets of Bapu's latest mythological film Sri Rama Rajyam. “I was always infatuated with South Indian temples and I guess that was the reason why I was able to do a good job,” says Kiran. He graduated with a diploma in architecture with a specialisation in architecture of temples from SVR University, Tirupati in 1996. A year later, he joined Ramoji Film City as an assistant art director and went on to work under Bhaskar Raju on several in-house projects. “In the past 13 years, I have worked with Thotta Tharani on films like Sivaji, Robo and Dam 999 and Anand Sai for Yamadonga. I was heading the team at Ramoji Film City which built huge sets for these three films,” he reveals. Kiran's association with Bapu dates back to 2004 when the veteran director was making a TV serial Sri Bhagavatham for ETV. Six years later when Bapu and Yalamanchili Saibabu were looking for appropriate sets for Sri Rama Rajyam, Kiran joined the team. “They had come to Film City to see if there were any existing sets to make their mythological film. Since they didn't find what they were looking for, I came forward to do the job. Bapu narrated the script and I drew the layouts which probably impressed them. I must also thank art director Ravinder for giving me this opportunity. Initially he was supposed to do the art direction for the entire film; however, he was caught up with other projects and Bapu

wanted someone to be present on the sets all the time,” Kiran says adding, “Bapu is a great artist. He's one of the few directors who prefers to have a storyboard before a shot is canned and we had the shot division ready which made our job easy.” Along with 500 members, Kiran built four sets for the film – Raj Darbar, Pooja Mandiram, Kaushalya Mandiram and Sayana Mandiram. The team worked continuously for 90 days at a stretch and since every set had to be completed on time, they began working on each set simultaneously. “You will see a lot of influence of South Indian architecture in the film and everything was shot in Ramoji Film City. The sets were so huge that we couldn't use Plaster of Paris or wood. Instead, fibre was used to build most of the sets to get the detailing right. Since we had built 20 ft high miniatures for all the sets, the height was extended by another 16 ft using CGI,” he reveals. Talking more about the grandeur of the sets, Kiran adds, “We used metallic paints instead of water paints, although the former is six times more expensive.

Since it's a mythological film, the glow is very important and the output is a lot better when metallic paints are used.” The producer ended up spending close to Rs10 crore on the sets including construction of the sets and the subsequent CGI. “Saibabu and Bapu have a great taste when it comes to films and it was quite tough to please them. One day we were asked to rebuild a mandapam which is shown in the song as where LuvaKusha sing in the streets of Ayodhya and we had to complete it within six hours so that the schedule isn't disturbed. More than 3,000 people worked on rebuilding the mandapam and Bapu was quite pleased with our work when he came to the set the next day,” Kiran recalls. His work in Sri Rama Rajyam has already opened more doors for him in the film industry. He's currently working on Kalyan Ram's upcoming 3D film and another Kannada film starring Upendra which is a sociofantasy. “I am quite happy that several art directors and other technicians have appreciated my work. The whole credit goes to Saibabu and Bapu,” he says.

Kiran Kumar has joined the elite list of art directors who have made a name for themselves by creating stunning art work in big budgeted films

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
