reed, ingratitude and insensitivity, have landed a bridegroom and his mother in police custody. The SR Nagar police brought out the incident reflective of the society’s decadent face where a youth who got all helps from the family of one girl

he was engaged to be married tried to marry another after taking more benefits. Both son and mum are counting bars in the jail.

Mohd Rafiq, 27, a resident of Hasmathpeth, Secunderabad, was a labourer till a year ago and he was engaged to be married to his cousin, Zarina

Begum, in 2010. The engagement ceremony was conducted as per religious system in the presence of the elders and relatives. At that time, girl’s father Mohd Shabir, who works as a real estate broker, had given the boy a gold chain and a ring. Later, Rafiq got a chance to work in Saudi Arabia. His parents sought and got `70,000 from the girl's parents and he went to Saudi Arabia. Recently, Rafiq came on leave, and he allegedly got engaged to another girl who is financially better placed. The

marriage was to take place today. Meanwhile, Shabir saw the wedding card and he was shocked. Enquiries revealed that the youth and his parents had kept the earlier engagement under wraps. The parents and girl he was newly engaged to were in the dark. Shabir alerted the SR Nagar police and inquiries exposed the youth and his parents. Exactly 24 hours before the marriage police handcuffed the mother and son. “It was an outright cheating of a girl and her parents,” remarked a police officer.

The City today witnessed an unprecedented combined action of cleaning Ganesh idols immediately after they are immersed, in view of the world conference on biodiversity beginning on Monday. Whether it was the police security or lake cleaning, everything assumed a gigantic proportion. The City police commissioner had posted some 15,000 policemen to ensure peaceful

conduct of the immersion ceremony that starts around 2pm today. Besides the three major immersion centres — Saroonagar lake, Hussain Sagar lake, and Hasmathpeth lake — the civic authorities had allowed immersion in 18 other small and medium lakes. The Ganashotsav committee in collaboration with GHMC and lake protection committee had arranged in all, 42 cranes to hoist the idols and immerse in the lakes. Hundreds of volunteers and sanitation staff were kept ready to immediately remove them so that the lakes are clean before the world event begins. The record sale of the Balapur laddu auction added

zest to the festive fervour. By 11am over 10,000 devotees had gathered at Khairatabad Ganesh, the largest of them all. While the police said permissions were given for 8,748 Ganesh pandals, the City had set up nearly 40,000 pandals, most of them small. Both the Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and Mayor Mohd Majid Hussain did not come out. The CM was in his camp office while the mayor remained at home. Only the DGP and municipal commissioner were seen busy visiting various places to ensure smooth conduct of the festival. Drug epidemic grips Punjab Sixty-seven per cent of all rural households in Punjab are home to at least one drug addict. Ammu Kannampilly

feedback@postnoon.com

O

n a muggy evening in the north Indian city of Amritsar, Sunil Sharma prepares for another heroin hit in a decrepit, abandoned building. Before inhaling the fumes of his brown paste heated on a piece of tinfoil, the 23-year-old explained he had tried heroin for the first time six months ago when his girlfriend left him to marry another man. “I feel bad... why have I become like this? Why have I tied this noose around my neck?” he told AFP, slurring his words. There are thousands like him across the state of Punjab, which leads the country in drug-related crime with a rate that is nearly ten times the national average, according to police records. In an affidavit submitted in 2009 to the state high court, the local government estimated that 67 percent of all rural households in Punjab were home to at least one drug addict. Located on a long-standing smuggling route that sees heroin transported from Afghanistan via neighbouring Pakistan and on to markets elsewhere in the region, Punjab is now increasingly a final destination for the contraband. When local couriers involved in smuggling “came to know

that drugs have a lot of profit then they began to indulge in local selling of these things,” says S Boopathi, assistant inspector general of the state police narcotics cell. He said it was impossible to estimate the amount of drugs crossing Punjab, but added that “trade is huge”. Rajiv Walia, regional coordinator at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) told AFP that Punjab had “a serious problem because it borders trafficking routes and drug-producing regions.” “You will do anything to support the habit.” In the 1970s, Punjab was regarded as India’s “bread basket”, due to its fertile soil, prosperous farmer community and booming agricultural output. Some, like former addict Navneet Singh, see the growing appetite for drugs as “a problem of abundance.” Singh, a successful restaurant owner who has been clean for 11 years, grew up in a wealthy family. He believes that Punjab’s relative affluence and its cultural norms, coupled with the easy access to drugs, make addiction a commonplace reality. “Punjab has a very macho culture, very prone to showing off. It’s a ready-made market for drugs,” the 38-year-old told AFP. “What does the Punjabi do when he gets rich? He buys an SUV, a gun and he gets high,” he said.

“Then as time passes and you get addicted you will do anything to support the habit,” he added. Doctor JPS Bhatia has witnessed the problem of addiction in Punjab from close quarters. When the psychiatrist set up his hospital in 1991, he would see one or two drug-related cases a week. Today, out of the 130 patients he sees every day, some 70 to 80 percent are battling drug addiction, he tells AFP. In response to the expanding scale of the problem, Bhatia set up a rehab centre for recovering addicts in 2003. “I see cases where the son is into addiction, the father is into

addiction... the whole family is sick,” he says, comparing the state’s situation to “a ticking time bomb”. Those who are too poor to afford heroin or cocaine take to swallowing or injecting cheap prescription drugs or consuming a locally-produced crude form of opium called “bhukki”, a tea-like drink made from ground poppy husk. The Amritsar neighbourhood of Maqboolpura has lost so many young men to overdoses or drug-related illnesses, that it is locally known as “the village of widows”. Schoolmaster Ajit Singh has

two cousins who are addicted to crude forms of heroin. Another cousin, whose morphine habit saw him leave home to beg on the streets, died at the age of 31. According to Singh, who grew up in Maqboolpura, the working class community here began to dabble in the sale of opium in the 1960s, when they realised how lucrative the business could be. “First, it was an easy way to make money. Then they developed a taste for the stuff,” he said. Today, he estimates that each house along the 13 narrow streets that make up this neighbourhood is home to at least one drug addict. Unlike his older cousins, Singh managed to finish school and he became a teacher of political science and a local community worker. He began by offering evening classes to local children whose fathers had fallen victim to addiction and went on to found a school for more than 600 pupils. Local mother, Kiran Kaur whose two children attend the school, worries for her husband who has struggled to find work as a labourer since developing a prescription drug habit. “I have asked him many times to quit but I don’t think he can do it,” the 32-year-old sighed. As she waited for her children to finish class, she added: “I can’t see a way out of my life, but things can be different for my children if they study hard.” AFP

EDITORIALS WHAT SORT OF austerity is this? Nobody would accuse our netas of matching their words with deeds. But just after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s pontification of ‘hard economic realities’ and ‘money not growing on trees’, the news that media brought out about the UPA bash and dinner which cost the exchequer `28 lakh comes a shocker. Unless rulers live by their words, cadres and masses would not follow them. But in our situation, the scenario is too depressing. Let us face it. It is not just Congressmen or UPA, each of our political party and netas has a penchant to say something in public and do something else in private. These leaders have forgotten the ageold wisdom that a ruler lives in a glass house and all their actions are transparent. If, at least, the top ones do not lead an exemplary life, the country will decay. Belated though, the ruling party must correct its mistakes and lead a way of life that match their promises and words so that the hardworking people of this country is reassured that their taxes are not going to a foreign bank.

WHAT GOES AROUND comes around It’s an irony that it is mostly the son — who gets preference over the daughter in affection and attention from parents who hope that he will look after them when they grow old and helpless —who abuses parents in their old age. This is one among the tragic findings of a study on the issue. One in three senior citizens are abused by either their children or daughter-inlaws. Delhi claimed the infamous title of the city with the largest number of such cases. The next time we fault our parents, chide them, remember, what goes around comes around.

Hierarchy of power Soul Curry SUMAA TEKUR

A

designer-friend was creating a poster, last week, to announce a district-level football match. There was a long list of local leaders and VIPs, whose names had to be accommodated on the poster. The task was a rather complex one considering that the hierarchy of the VIPs had to be upheld while making the list. Whose name appears first on the list? Chief guest or guest of honour? Is the person who presides over the event more important than the special invitee? The hierarchy of guests at such events is made apparent in the order in which the names appear in the invitation. The

most important guest gets top spot and maybe even a bolder display with thick fonts. The boldness of colour and fonts tapers as the list progresses. Just one goof up and the organizers are bound to have a rough time explaining the hierarchy to all the special invitees, and managing their hurt egos. This plays out almost everywhere. Ever noticed the local political party posters? This is the best shot at fame for the relatively unknown faces to show that they’re hardworking party workers. The hierarchy of the party’s members plays out in the size their portraits are blown up to. The more enlarged their photos, the higher up they must be in the order. Why just at the very local level, even our national leaders fuss over who sits where in a public function. If the front seat is not reserved for them, they are most upset, and will throw tantrums to show their displeasure and hurt ego. Ego is such a

fragile thing. It can lay bare one’s deepest desires, fears and apprehensions without even having to say much. We create systems in order to wipe out equality and make it easy for people with better intellect, opportunity and talent to shine. Physical hierarchy is the most common and most lethal amongst all hierarchies. This includes political power and financial power. The scams tumbling out of the government’s cupboards, and the closed-door meetings to forge new friendships and wipe out existing ones as if without a trace, are all but attempts at wrestling for power and climbing up the ladder we ourselves created. In the designs of the maker of this universe, there was actually no room for hierarchy. The universe is not designed for individuals to shut out the rest of the world and live as though on an island. Existence is only possible if there is constant

give and take. This happens almost on a moment-to-moment basis. In this process, we open ourselves to the fears, insecurities, frustrations, dysfunction and anger of others around us. The dualistic superiorityinferiority complexes we experience are a function of our own perceptions of society. We look down on people we think are below us in the hierarchy, and we look up to people who we think are more successful than us. By doing this, we are feeding our insecurities more and more. Agreed that only those spiritual seekers very deep down the road of spirituality can remain detached and not allow human emotions to dictate day-to-day existence. For the rest of us, even as we bicker over whose photo should be printed bigger on the poster, we can reflect on what this all means at the end of the day. And was it worth it?

Opening up to Myanmar: Proceed with caution ing indicator that ethnic communities rich in natural resources may face increased levels of oppression as international companies are welcomed into Myanmar.

Affairs of the World DR ROBERT LAWRENCE and ADAM RICHARDS

A

ung San Suu Kyi’s widely heralded visit to the United States provides ample opportunity to celebrate her freedom and inspires high hopes for Myanmar’s transition to a more peaceful and democratic future. Yet her visit also reminds us that much more work remains to be done to achieve that goal for all the people of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. The international community must proceed with caution to ensure that progress toward greater openness and new commerce does not come at the cost of greater human rights abuses for Myanmar’s ethnic minorities. During her visit, Suu Kyi, has given the green light to Congress to ease sanctions on her country and promote investment. Investment can certainly be a force for good, creating jobs and eradicating the poverty that is epidemic in Myanmar. But economic development can have

a downside as well. A survey of 665 households this summer in eastern Myanmar conducted by Physicians for Human Rights showed that nearly one-third of them had experienced human rights violations in the past year, including forced labour, forced displacement, and physical attacks. Abuses were much more common in communities situated near economic development

projects like roads, or ports — just the kind of infrastructure projects likely to proliferate with the lifting of sanctions. The survey was conducted in Karen State, a mountainous region home primarily to the ethnic Karen minority, where conflict with the Burmese military has carried on for decades. The high correlation between economic development and human rights abuses, especially forced labour, is a worry-

The international community should use all tools at its disposal to guide new investment in a way that will best promote democratic values and protect all Myanmar’s people from violations of human rights. Companies should conduct human rights impact assessments, consult with local communities that may be affected by their investment, and adhere to United Nations guiding principles on business and human rights. National governments should ensure that the companies they regulate do not collaborate with perpetrators of human

rights violations in Myanmar, and that any company complicit in abuse is held accountable. States should also adopt Suu Kyi’s advice to make investment as transparent as possible. In her words, increased transparency would enable policymakers and watchdogs to “find out if what [companies] are doing is actually helping our country or harming it.” Experience over decades has shown us that repressive regimes with long histories of targeting minorities do not change their entrenched patterns overnight. People concerned with human rights and democracy in Myanmar must recognize this moment in history as a crucial opportunity to press for changes that will ensure that the benefits of Myanmar’s welcome reforms can reach its ethnic communities. An Unfinished Campaign Against Polio

W

ere anything to discredit the idea of holding a parliamentary inquiry into the Libor rate-rigging scandal, it would be the behaviour of the House of Commons yesterday. In a series of rancorous exchanges, Ed Balls and George Osborne came across more as squabbling schoolchildren than statesmen capable of steering us through the economic storm. Leaders of the global fight to eradicate polio vowed at the United Nations on Thursday to step up their efforts to eliminate the virus from the three countries where the disease still has a foothold — Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. The challenge is that those countries are troubled by political unrest, violence and social customs that can interfere with the delivery of vaccines to the children and adults who need protection. Polio erupted in frightening epidemics around the world during the 20th century and crippled or killed hundreds of thousands of victims a

year. There is no cure, but vaccines eliminated the virus from advanced countries and relegated it to poorer regions of the world. In 1988, a global campaign was organized by public and private organizations to eradicate the disease. It has been an enormous success. At its start, more than 350,000 children were paralyzed each year in more than 125 countries. This year, only 145 cases have been reported, and the disease remains endemic in only three countries. Afghanistan pushed down the number of cases to 17 so far this year from 80 last year. Pakistan drove its polio burden down to 30 cases as of mid-August, but has run into difficulties because of opposition from the Taliban and Muslim religious leaders who depict vaccination campaigns as a cover for espionage. Nigeria experienced a drop in cases in 2010 followed by an upsurge to 84 cases this year, mostly in areas where militant groups are fighting and people distrust Western vaccines. Ban Ki-moon, the secretary-general of the United Nations, said he would enlist agencies of the UN to make eradication a top priority this year. Ridding the world of polio should be a crucial part of a broad campaign to immunise all children against infectious diseases.

aking a loan is commonplace these days. Be it a car, housing or personal loan. Yet, not many people are aware of what banks look for before approving one. In a bid to increase their profits, banks try to reduce potential non-performing assets (NPAs) by offering loans to those individuals who have a high credit score. Banks have been increasingly dependant upon the credit information bureau of India limited (CIBIL) since 2006 for these scores, before they pass a loan. However, there are not too many companies that help educate the public on the importance of creditworthiness. This is where Satya Lalith Kumar V and T Krishna stepped in with ICrediZen, a credit counselling and consultancy firm with an investment of `4 lakh. Talking about the business idea, Satya says, “We knew the importance of credit rating will

increase over time. In the West, different institutions check these credit ratings for not only offering loans, but to rent a house or buy a house and at times even while offering an employment. This will soon become the trend in India as well. The idea behind our business was to educate people about financial credit rating that include building credibility and credit worthiness of an individual or a business.” Incidentally, Satya is a chartered accountant and also a qualified cost accountant. “I had previously worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers and RSM International before initiating this project. My partner, Krishna is a management graduate from IIM, Kozhikode and has worked with credit rating companies. We met at a com-

mon friend’s wedding and I knew his expertise would be valuable for our business venture,” says Satya. Although, the company got a breakeven in its first four months, the challenge lay in tapping the huge potential in the Indian market. “The first and foremost challenge is to educate and make people aware about the importance of credit rating in financial planning. Although, the credit repair industry is at a nascent stage in our country, it is a billion dollar industry across the world. We want to grow and expand to other cities,” he says. Talking about services they offer, Krishna says, “We offer a range of services — credit health check-up of an individual, by seeking a credit report. This will help the individual to make sure that there is no identification theft on his name. After which, we act as an intermediary between banks, individuals and credit information companies to solve issues of identity theft and clearing loans and credit card defaults misusing an individual’s identity. “We also do financial settlements between the bank and an individual. If an individual is unable to pay the loan due to a bad financial situation, we talk to banks and get issues settled. We also take care that the credit score does not get seriously damaged by such a default.”

It is also planning to raise investments of `2 crore to expand operations to eight major cities in the country next year, which will happen over a two year period. After which, it will go for a second round of fund raising to expand operations to another 20 cities. Talking about his ultimate objective, Satya says “As a young boy, I grew up seeing people around me going passionate about western products. Blair could’ve stopped it: Annan Iraq war LONDON: Former British PM Tony Blair was the only person capable of turning George Bush against the 2003 Iraq invasion, ex-UN chief Kofi Annan claimed in an interview on Saturday. Annan argued in an interview published in the Times newspaper that Blair could have changed Bush’s mind because of the special relationship between the two nations and the two world leaders. Annan said he often had con-

templated what might have happened if “Blair had said ‘George, this is where we part company. You’re on your own’,” following the failure to secure a second UN resolution. “I really think it could have stopped the war,” he added. Annan was UN secretary general at the time of the crisis. A first Security Council resolution, which offered Iraq a final opportunity to comply with its disarmament obligations passed unanimously in November 2002. But a second resolution proposed by the US, Britain, and Spain in 2003 that called for

action to be taken against Saddam Hussain’s regime was withdrawn when it became clear it would be vetoed. The US decided that the resolution was not needed before military action could lawfully take place, and the invasion commenced on March 20. Annan rejected suggestions that his resignation, or that of then US secretary of state Colin Powell, would have altered the course of history. Annan gave the interview to mark the launch of his memoirs: “Interventions — a Life in War AFP and Peace.”

US carjacking suspect shoots self live on TV

A car drives through a flooded area on Thursday after heavy rainfalls in Bobadilla, near Malaga, southern of Spain. An elderly woman died in floods driven by a rainstorm that overturned cars and forced hundreds from AFP/JORGE GUERRERO their homes in southern Spain, officials said on Saturday.

WASHINGTON: A high-speed chase turned ugly for Fox News on Friday when it televised — live — a fleeing carjacking suspect shooting himself in the head in the Arizona desert. Twitter exploded in reaction to the real-time broadcasting flub, while video of the graphic incident briefly found its way onto YouTube, as a badly shaken senior Fox News anchorman apologised profusely. “We really messed up and we’re all very sorry,” said anchorman Shepard Smith, who told viewers that a five-second delay in the live feed ought to have enabled the graphic scene to be stopped before going on air. “That didn’t belong on TV,” Smith said. “We took every precaution we knew how to take to keep that from being on TV. And I personally apologize to you

that happened.” Fox News online later cited police confirming that the man had died. But even before that, Twitter users proclaimed that Fox News, had telecast a “suicide” as it happened. The Fox affiliate in Phoenix said police had pursued the carjacking suspect at speeds of up to 175 kilometers per hour for more than an hour. From the expressway, the red Dodge Caliber hatchback veered onto dusty back roads in the vicinity of Salome. The driver, wearing an American football jersey, was then seen abandoning the car and fleeing on foot, with no police officers visible in the tightly framed aerial shot. The live broadcast drew criticism from a number of IANS media observers.

Pope’s former German court to Muslim butler goes on trial girl: You have to ‘swim’

$450m US aid to Cairo frozen

VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict XVI’s former butler Paolo Gabriele goes on trial on Saturday for leaking confidential Vatican memos that revealed cloak-anddagger politics among the pope’s closest aides. A once loyal servant who said he grew disgusted by the “evil and corruption” he witnessed, Gabriele told investigators he was acting as an “agent” of the Holy Spirit to help the pope put a weary Catholic Church back on track. Gabriele faces up to four years in prison for aggravated theft in a trial that is unprecedented in the modern history of the world’s smallest state. Using the codename “Maria”, he is accused of meeting investigative reporter Gianluigi Nuzzi earlier this year and passing him copies of secret papers.

WASHINGTON: A Republican congresswoman on Friday froze a request by the Obama administration for $450 million in cash for the Egyptian government, saying it needed new scrutiny amid rocky US ties with Cairo. The lawmaker, Kay Granger, from Texas, who chairs the Appropriations Sub-committee on State and Foreign Relations, put a “hold” on the application, meaning it could be held up indefinitely. “This proposal comes to Congress at a point when the US-Egypt relationship has never been under more scrutiny, and rightly so,” Granger said in a statement “I am not convinced of the urgent need for this assistance and I cannot support it at this time. I have placed a hold on these funds.”

BERLIN: A German court on Friday refused to allow a Muslim student to skip swimming lessons after she said she was uncomfortable being so close to bare-chested boys. The 12-year-old, originally from Morocco but going to school in the southern German city of Frankfurt, had refused to take part in swimming lessons and had been marked down accordingly. She filed to be given the right to skip the classes, her lawyer arguing that according to the Koran, she was not only forbidden from showing herself to boys but also from seeing the topless boys. An administrative court in Kassel, western Germany, rejected her application. It said in its ruling that she could wear the full-body swimsuit, known as the “burkini” already used by several girls at her school.

E

sports tournaments aka videogame tournaments have been organised regularly in India for the past five years, but Indian gamers have hardly made their presence felt at an international level. All that changed last week when a team of five youngsters from Mumbai came third at the Asia eSports Cup in Counter Strike 1.6. Raju Jittu (20), Imtiyaz Khan (22), Bhavesh Nachnani (25), Akash Gudhka (21), Roshan Fernandez (23), Sadanand Dey (20) have been playing together as part of the clan (a gaming team) NSD since 2010 and have won several times at the national level.

Q: How did you guys meet and when did you decide to create a clan? Raju: We met at the AR gaming cafe in Thane in 2010, before that most of us were playing for different clans and I was part of this clan called Energy. All of us used to game Counter Strike at the cafe and knew each other well enough like that, so we decided to form a clan Q: What do you think of gaming as a profession in India? Do you have sponsors and what has been your experience of working with sponsors like? Raju: In 2011, we won around `3-4 lakhs by winning 2-5 tournaments. The most money we won was at a tournament organised by Nvidia, then we won `1 lakh and a gaming laptop. Before we went for the Asia Cup Youth

Republic, Talk eSports decided to sponsor us. Sponsors help as they help us pay for the travel and accommodation when we go to other cities or countries for gaming tournaments. The only problem as of now with being a professional gamer is that most tournaments give gamers goodies such as laptops, graphic cards and such instead of cash. It would help us a lot more if we received cash. Q: What was your family’s response? What do they think about gaming? Raju: Our parents were initially skeptical about us spending so much time playing games. However their attitudes changed when they found out later that we are among the top gamers in the country. Since then they have been extremely supportive and that is another reason I wish tournament winners would be paid in cash, so we can be less dependent on our parents to fund our gaming. Over the past five years all of us have spent so much of our parents money to game and we don't want to do that anymore.

Q: How did you prepare for the Asia esports cup? Raju: We didn't do anything special for the tournament. Our basics are strong and that is what helped us win and reach where we have. Normally we practice very little; if there's a tournament in the weekend we meet once on a week day and form a basic strategy. We followed the

same approach for the international tournaments as well. Q: Was this the first time you played against international level teams? Raju: In a way yes, we have played a couple of them earlier in India, but this was something else. Q: What's your favourite Counter Strike map? Are you

guys practicing Counter Strike: Global Offensive? Raju: Our favourite map is Inferno and no we haven't started practicing Global Offensive yet. The game is just out and only a few clans in India like ATE and Brutality are practicing the game right now. Next month the ICGC finals are being organised in Goa so we'll think about Global Offensive after that. Q: You guys have been around in the industry for a while, what do you think of esports right now compared to a few years back? Raju: The gaming tournaments have improved little by little over the years. There are some really good ones like ICGC and BYOC and some really bad ones too. So it all depends on the organisers. Q: So what next, you guys are planning to add more gamers to your clan? Raju: Yes, actually our sponsors had suggested that we recruit other gamers who specialise in games such as Fifa and NFS. That way we'll have a larger presence so we'll be auditioning for gamers pretty soon.

It was the sheer love for animals that led Dr Lakshmi Srinivasan to become a veterinarian and now, after 20 years in this field, she is still in awe of animals. She talks about her journey and much more. AMY ROSE THOMAS

A

fter getting scratched, bitten and mauled by animals for the past 20 years, Dr Lakshmi Srinivasan Ramana, one of the founders of Animal Care Clinic, is just as excited to get to work as she was years

back when she started out as a veterinarian. “I wanted to be a veterinarian since the time I was four. Animals have always been my passion and now, after 20 years in the field, they still are. Some animals are more than willing to come to the hospital but most of them are not. There are some who are vindictive and hate coming to the hospital. I have been attacked so many times

through my career but they are not doing it out of malice. I feel that it is my fault that I got bitten. I should not have let my guard down,” she says. Animals are simple and straightforward and these are the lessons that humans should learn from them, she adds. “Each day is an adventure for me and I learn more about animals every day. I am in awe of these creatures. Humans are

way too complicated. They should learn from the simplicity and straightforward nature of animals. Yesterday, this lady brought in a baby rabbit with a fractured leg. She told me that when its brother saw the injured bunny, it licked it all over. I doubt if even kids nowadays show similar love to their siblings,” she says. She has a big family complete with 14 dogs and one cat.

“All of us are animal lovers and each of my kids has a dog each. My elder daughter loves animals and says that she wants to become a vet when she grows up. She always has a choice and I would never pressurise her to take it up and if she wants to, I will give all the support she needs. I would be like how my mother was with me when I was a kid and I told her that I want to become a vet,” she says.

DR LAKSHMI SRINIVASAN FEELS THAT ANIMALS ARE SIMPLE AND STRAIGHTFORWARD AND THESE ARE THE LESSONS THAT HUMANS SHOULD LEARN FROM THEM. As a child, Lakshmi says that she picked up all kinds of animals and brought them home to take care of them. “I used to bring home lizards, frogs, mice, dogs, cats and goats. There was never a time when there wasn’t an animal in the house. Since I was the only child, I connected well with them rather than other children. My mother never liked animals but my father was very fond of them,” she reminisces. So, how did her parents react when she declared that she wanted to become a vet? “Being a vet was considered to be a back door profession at the time and my family was not very happy when I told them about my decision to become one. Mine is a family of businessmen and doctors. But my mother was a pillar of support for me during those times,” she says.

atrick Ness dedicates this book to author Siobhan Dowd who died of breast cancer. Dowd was a wonderful writer of children’s fiction and this story was in fact her idea. A Monster Calls is only a furthering of her idea. Ness confesses that he did not try to recreate her story, he only wrote it the way she would have wanted to

deadly parasitic infection that causes men to turn into monsters, which is controlled by an Ugandan rebel leader. And an even deadlier plot hatched by the Iranians who plan to turn it into a bioweapon against the United States. With time running out, Jon and his team must stop the parasite from being weaponised, con-

tain the infected, all the while fighting the Ugandan rebels, Iranian forces, and merceneries from his own country and concentrate on staying alive. Kyle Mills is the son of an FBI agent and it shows. The book is decently plotted out, but where The Ares Decision suffers is the pace and the characterisation. There are

unnecessary subplots and threads that affect the pace and never quite tie together in the end. The fifth author to dabble in the Covert One series, Kyle struggles to sketch Jon Smith to keep in tune with his character in the other books of the series. If you have zero expectations, have never read Ludlum or Kyle Mills originals, you might be

Not just a teen fantasy write. The idea that Ness toys with is every child's nightmare — monsters. The only difference is that this monster is not hiding under the bed but occupies a significant portion of land outside his house. It's an aged yew tree, come to life. This is a story about how a young boy plagued by nightmares, worry and guilt, deals with the illness that is eating his mother Conor O'Malley has the same nightmare every night, the one which ends with him staring at a pair of red eyes and him screaming. He is then visited by the yew tree. His nightmare does not end there, in school he is bullied mercilessly but there is also another half that gives him the silent treatment. They all knew him as the boy who's mother had

cancer. It is this failure of people around him to address the reality of the situation that aggra-

Name A Monster Calls Author Patrick Ness Pages 236 Publisher PanMacmillan vates the 13-year-old. He does not want to be looked upon as an object of pity. The purpose of the monster one later gathers, is to allow Conor to get in touch with his buried emotions about his mother's illness. The yew tree narrates to him three tales and demands that the fourth tale be told by Conor. It seems to be a kind of replaying of the appearance of the three ghosts in Christmas Carol. Like Scrooge is a changed man by the end, so is

Conor. He realises what he has been fighting against for so long and what the nightmare is actually about. A Monster Calls has won Ness both the Carnegie Medal and its sister prize for illustration for the first time in awards history. And the novel deserves full credit for it. This heartrending story is sure to elicit some tears after reading. It makes the reader connect with the story on a personal level too. The fear of letting go of someone you love is very difficult and you tend to sympathise with the young hero. What’s impressive as well is that though this book is written for children, adults too will find it tugging at their heartstrings. The book, like all Ness’s books, tries to see teenagers clearly — “accepting a teenager as a genuine human being, not as a symbol of transition from boy to man but as a real person.”

milie de la Martiniéres, who always rebelled against her aristocratic roots, has just inherited her family's ancestral mansion in the South of France. And she whines about it. Then she falls for a total stranger whose opening sentence pretty much says, “Aren't you that rich girl who just inherited a mansion?” Seriously, would you root for her? Now that we've got that breathless rant out of the way, let's talk about the book. It starts awkwardly, with strange similes where clouds and uncooked meringue are compared. But, after a while, the prose becomes a little more easy flowing, and the story (not the protagonist, though) gets bearable. Emilie's gold-digger fiance Sebastian (this is not a spoiler; it is amply clear to everyone but Emilie) tells her about his grandmother Constance who knew Emilie's father, Edouard. Jacques, who was Edouard's friend and knew

Constance, starts to tell her the story of her family. Somewhere between all her whining, Emilie finds time to marry Sebastian, join him at his dreary crumbling English mansion on the moors and meet his mysterious paraplegic brother. It is only when the book goes into flashback mode and gets to the story of Edouard, his blind sister Sophia and Constance (who is a British spy) does the story get interesting. The author recreates 1940s France well, capturing all the nervousness and tension of the war. One wishes the author had allotted more space to these flashbacks. Her characters do spin out of control after a point, but they're a lot more fun than the present day ones. And when you come back to Emilie, it's almost with a sense of dread. Did she learn anything from the blast from the past? Not really. Now she's realising (very, very slowly) that her husband isn't all that wonderful, her whining is not really justified and she's

allowed to have a mind of her own. For someone who rebelled against her family's elite lifestyle all her life, you think she'd have more gumption and brains. Unfortunately, a lot of the characters are one-dimensional cardboard figures and are utterly either black or white. Caricatures of Nazi officers and squabbling siblings flit in and out of the pages. None of the leading characters are really worth cheering for and the book ends on a soppy note. The half-baked romances, poorly sketched-out relationships and a dreary writing style made the book seem longer than its 400 pages. While the book is not entirely a terrible read, it is far from being a shining example of great literature. Ploughing through the novel, for most part, felt like a waste of time.

here's an inexplicable charm about jewellery made out of gold and diamonds. They have always been the preferred ornaments for every major event in a woman's life. With the advent of contemporary fashion, several designers have been experimenting with alternative forms of jewellery. That explains why junk jewellery and oxidized silver is so popular for these days. Harini Rao, a Hyderabadbased designer, is one such entrepreneur, who’s betting big on making alternative jewellery aesthetic. Couple of days ago, she was one of the speakers at Ignite Hyderabad about alternative jewellery and she was the only person selected by UX India to talk about the subject. Her company, Hearth Treasures, excels at making terracotta jewellery which already has plenty of takers in the country. So how did it all begin? “I was always intrigued by jewellery. I used to play with a lot of beads and in my school days, I used to make tiny bracelets and colourful necklaces for myself and my friends. It was just a hobby for a very long time,” Harini Rao says. Having studied in Kendriya Vidyalaya in Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore, she went on to major in accounting at the Badruka College in Hyderabad. After college, she worked as a tax researcher and tax consultant at Promantra and Deloitte. From being a tax consultant to a jewellery designer, we ask if it was a tough decision to take the leap. “I must give a lot of credit to my husband Kamal Aakarsh for that. He was the one who encouraged me to quit

my job and take up my passion seriously. Initially, my target was to make at least half of what I was earning at my previous company. It’s been two months since I quit my job and already, I am earning more than what I used to,” she smiles. Interestingly, she met Kamal at one of her jewellery exhibitions. “He bought a necklace. That was his investment and I was the return on investment,” she laughs. “Making terracotta jewellery,” she says, “is quite a liberating experience. There’s a lot more freedom to experiment in terms of designs when you are making terracotta jewellery when compared to other metals. Since it’s made with riverbed clay, it can be moulded well.” Each ornament is

painstakingly created by hand, which takes a lot of effort. “I don’t think gold and diamond jewellery will ever lose their sheen. But I urge people to see terracotta jewellery as something equally precious. Everything is handmade and each creation takes about 25 days to be completed,” Harini confesses. Currently, she works along with two other artists, who happen to be her domestic help’s daughters and few groups of artisans across the country. Most of her clients approach her through Facebook and sometimes she gets orders from USA, Singapore and Malaysia. “The best part about terracotta jewellery is that everything looks beautiful. I experiment more with contemporary abstract design and temple jew-

ellery. These days, people are in mood to experiment since they want to stand out no matter what the event is,” she opines. Apart from Hearth Treasures, she also runs a music school named Raageshree in Secunderabad. “I have learnt Hindustani Classical Music for 15 years. I began this school in July and I teach students both offline and on skype. We have an active Facebook group where, every Wednesday, we discuss a lot about raagas in filmy music. I really want to connect with more people who are interested in Hindustani Classical Music,” she says. Not surprisingly, her favourite music director is Ilayaraja. “He stills follows the old fashioned way of composing music and he doesn’t have to compete with anyone. Ilayaraja has been one of the biggest inspirations in my life. I also like Hindi music directors from the 50s and 60s who created so many masterpieces,” she adds. So what’s the best compliment she’s got so far for her creations? “Sometimes clients place orders for terracotta jewellery for special occasions like marriage or engagements. I take that as a big compliment because they are actually thinking of jewellery which is not made of gold or diamonds. There’s so much to explore in alternative jewellery. I have just started with terracotta and I am planning to experiment more with jewellery made with wood, glass and black lava beads,” she signs off. Beauty and the beard All About Eve

recent story that I had read got me thinking. I am sure by now most of you might have also read it. It is the story of the Balpreet Kaur, an aspiring Sikh neurosurgeon who became the subject of ridicule all because a clickhappy idiot thought he would have some fun at her expense. He posted a picture of hers complete with facial hair and beard and a comment which said, “'Im (sic) not sure what to conclude from this'.” Had I been in her place I would have ached to get my hands on the fellow and push his face in. But Balpreet did what few people would have the guts to do. She calmly explained to all that poked fun at her, that as part of her religion, she cannot cut her hair. She then went on to explain the religious significance of it and in a very polite way handed the poster a taste of his own medicine by saying that if he had wanted a picture he should have just asked and she would have smiled. The tides turned and the same public that laughed at her called her an inspiration and awesome. The very incident causes me to reflect on the society’s concept of beauty. Remember the bearded woman would be a thing of attraction at every fair and circus. Despite almost all beauty pageant winners saying ‘ beauty is only skin deep, look at the inner beauty’, the world is still hung up with notions of skin colour, size and height being important to judge whether a person is beautiful. No matter how many tshirts we wear proclaiming ‘ fat is beautiful or black is beautiful’ the mentality still remains the same. I do wish there were more of us who are able to do what Balpreet did — maintain her dignity and her composure in the face of adversity and to answer back to the perpetrator. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful, for beauty is God's handwriting.” If only we’d wait a little longer to see the beauty.

EXERCISE FOR BETTER MENTAL HEALTH

I AM ALL EARS

I

am a 20-year-old girl and have just begun dating. My boyfriend is my classmate and he is extremely popular among the girls in my class. Sometimes I feel he acts in a certain manner to get their attention. He even goes out to parties with them. I am feeling very jealous and obsessive. Is this normal?

E

xercise is not just good for physical health — research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health. Source: Science Daily

Dear disturbed kid, Twenty is not the age where you should be asking such questions. It’s the time to have fun and experiment with life, though do it carefully. Your boyfriend is doing exactly that. As long as he is not cheating on you or using you as an arm-candy, its perfectly normal that he mix with other friends in class. Do fun things with your friends and then you will realise that you always don’t need to be attached at the hip to him. And you will do fine.

Dial D for drunk

Drinking and dialing is as injurious to your sanity and your relationships as drinking and driving is to your safety. Postnoon Team

"T

his one time, I had a really bad day at work. But thankfully, it was the weekend and so I got out with some friends to drown my sorrows in a bottle. A few hours, and a lot of shots later, everything was looking good again. I vaguely remembered making a call to a friend and shooting my mouth off. The next morning, I checked my phone log to realise that it was my boss I called and not her namesake. Facing her on Monday morning was the most embarrassing moment of my life," Priyanka Saxena, a marketing professional from Mumbai recounts. If you are a drinker, you might be familiar with this condition. It's usually a nocturnal affliction, likely to hit a person after a few rounds of alcohol, when the neurons in their head have re-arranged to make the

person feel like every thought in their head is now of the genius variety, immediately worthy broadcasting. Their newly found wisdom propels them to do something their still-sane brain is categorically telling them not to do — reach for their phones and call people/say things that they never normally would. Romantic interests though are most often the subject of these phone calls. "I had just broken up with my boyfriend. We parted very amicably and I liked how cool and unaffected I was by the whole thing. Ten hours later, I was dialling his number, calling him names, all the things that were wrong with him, how I still love him and how he should now beg me to take him back. I now ensure I never call anybody when I'm drinking," says model Shruti Singh. Drunk dialing is such a common and widespread problem that even companies are basing bankable models on them. Virgin Mobile, in some

countries, offers its customers the options of blocking certain numbers for a few hours. LG takes it one step ahead and has a model that comes with a breathalyzer. It lets you make calls depending on your blood alcohol content. As ridiculous as it might seem, there's little doubt there'd be more than a few takers for it. Chaitanya Gogula, a software developer from Bangalore would order one of those, he says. "When you are drunk, you do stupid things. That's a given. Except you won't remember anything and neither will your drinking buddies. But when you call your exes or someone sober and exhibit your monumental stupidity, not only will they remember it, they will cherish it and remind you of it for the rest of your life. My friend called his ex at two and her husband picked up, and so he panicked and claimed he was from Blue Dart and had a courier parcel for her. At 2'o clock in the morning. When she

recounted this on Facebook, it became a legend. My friend could never live it down." After a few traumatic experiences very similar to this, Neha Gupta and her bunch of friends wisened up. "It seems like it's the most fun thing in the world the night before but the morning after is a nightmare," she says and adds, "We have a pact. If it's a house party, we make sure we put all our mobiles into a box and stash it away. If we go out, each one will have a buddy who will make sure the other one is not drunk dialing. It's very effective." The verdict is unanimous. Drinking and dialing is as injurious to your sanity and your relationships as drinking and driving is to your safety.

CMGR in trouble?

P

awan Kalyan's upcoming film Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu seems to have run into trouble. Director Puri Jagannadh has reportedly filed a complaint on DVV Danayya, the film's producer, over the latter's reluctance to pay his remuneration. The AP Director's Association is trying to solve the issue in an amicable manner; however, sources say that the tiff between Puri Jagannadh and Danayya might take an ugly turn. Pawan Kalyan and Tamannaah have played the lead roles in this eagerly awaited film. If the issue between Puri Jagannadh and Danayya isn't sorted out soon, there's a chance that the film might be postponed. As of now, it's expected to hit the screens on October 18.

LOUD AND UNIMAGINATIVE HEMANTH KUMAR

hemanth.k@postnoon.com

I

t's a crime to expect a lot from the so called 'mass entertainers' which are in vogue; however, one doesn't realise that until watching the film till the end. The plots including the conflicts are more or less the same and perhaps, the only thing that varies is how the hero is portrayed. In Rebel, Prabhas plays the quintessential loner who's out to avenge his parents' death. You know exactly how the story is going to pan out and that is the biggest problem with this utterly cliched film. Except for the action sequences, every bit of the film has a sense of deja vu. Maybe Lawrence, who directed the film, was trying to pay homage to his own films. We'll never know the truth. Rishi (Prabhas) comes to Hyderabad in search of two mysterious dons named Stephen and Robert. He realises that the only way to find out more about Stephen and Robert is through Nanu, a high profile don who's the only one to have interacted with Stephen and Robert. Nandini (Tamannaah), the daughter of Nanu, is a hip hop dancer in Bangkok and Rishi decides to make her fall in love with him in his attempt to reach Stephen Robert. The rest of the story is about who Rishi is and why he wants to kill the dons. Prabhas tries his best to instill some interest in the film and the only respite in this cliched film is when he flexes his muscles during the action sequences. Tamannaah ups the glam-

Raghava Lawrence succeeds in portraying Prabhas in an action-packed role, but there's nothing else to boast about his latest offering Rebel. Movie: Rebel Cast: Prabhas, Tamannaah, Deeksha Seth Directed by: Raghava Lawrence Rating: our quotient and she dazzles in the songs with her dance moves. Deeksha Seth is good in her shortlived role. Krishnam Raju plays a good hearted don, albeit for a short duration and Supreeth is quite impressive as his confidant. All said and done, one can't help but feel sad for all the actors in the film who find themselves trapped in a bubble which doesn't give them a distinct identity in the end. There have been countless films made on similar lines and there lies the biggest problem with the film. It's so unimaginative that it packs in every cliché to drive the story forward. It's obvious that Lawrence is still suffering from a hangover of his earlier films like Mass, Don and Kanchana. One can draw several parallels between those films and Rebel. The only thing which he hasn't done in the film is play the lead role. Other than that one can spot Lawrence's trademark in almost everything, right from characterisation to music. At a run time of almost three hours, Rebel is incredibly long and tests our endurance to sit

through a film; however it is what you expect a mass entertainer to be. Is the film is good? Perhaps the only thing one can say is — As It is ga undhi.

A sermon well delivered

After the mortals, directors have now begun to look to gods for inspiration. And since the religious sentiments in our country are always high, this film is sure to find some fans.

O Ranbir beats cousin Kareena in box office race

R

anbir Kapoor’s speech and hearing impaired character in Barfi! seems to be giving cousin Kareena Kapoor’s glamorous avatar in Heroine a run for her money! The sweet and simple love story in Barfi! seems to have touched the heartstrings of viewers who are still flocking to theatres to savour the unconventional romantic flavour. On the other hand, Heroine, with an overdose of glitz, doesn’t seem to have the same effect on IANS moviegoers.

h My God is based on a popular Gujarati play Kanji Virrudh Kanji. It is also said to be influenced from Paresh Rawal’s play Krishna vs Kanhaiya and thankfully does not go too overboard with the god gimmicks. The story revolves around Kanjibhai, an atheist living in Mumbai with his devout wife and two kids. He runs a shop selling – quite ironically — “God” paraphernalia in the infamous Chor Bazaar area. The man knows his business and has no qualms in making a profit selling cheap idols for exorbitant rates. Kanji not only does not believe in god, but even taunts others and attacks their blind beliefs with a sharp tongue and cruel wit. When an “act of God” ruins his business, he decides to sue God. So now Kanji has to argue the case against a colourful cast of holy people including the hand-flicking Mithun Chakraborthy, the fiery

Movie: Oh My God Cast: Akshay Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty, Paresh Rawal Directed by: Umesh Shukla Siddheshwar Maharaj (Govind Namdeo) and eyecandy Gopi Maiyya (Poonam Jhawer). What happens next is worth a watch. The film goes on to debunk many religious myths. Although in a

light-hearted manner, it also manages to expose the link between politicians and religious leaders. The director has bravely tried to address topics that are normally not discussed. Paresh Rawal excels in his role as Kanjibhai and Mithun as the effeminate godman is too good. Akshay Kumar is back to his funny self and adds the right touch of style. However, the much publicised song Go, Go Govinda, fails to pass muster. It looks forced. Overall, it’s a rather interesting take on God, his so-called “mediums” and the rituals that have been mindlessly passed on since generations. Sounds preachy? Well, the movie isn’t.

SUDOKU

KAKURO

How to play kakuro

SCRIBBLING PAD

Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play Kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

Raikkonen targets victory

ewly-crowned Olympic pole vault champion Renaud Lavillenie of France has dropped coach Damien Inocencio to work with former international pole vaulter Philippe D’Encausse. “I can only confirm his decision. But the reasons given are so childish that they can’t justify his decision,” Inocencio, who had coached him for four years, told AFP.

The Finn is currently third in the title chase and hopes he can stay there or improve in the flyaway events that take F1 to Japan, South Korea, India, Abu Dhabi, US and Brazil.

efending NBA champion Miami returns to work on Saturday for pre-season training camp, with star LeBron James coming off a gold medal effort at the London Olympics and two top teammates coming off injuries. Last June, the Heat captured their first NBA crown since obtaining James two years earlier, James winning his long-awaited first NBA title.

Spies of Yamaha leads way in rainy Aragon

The forecast for Saturday is also bad making morning practice an important one. ALCANIZ, SPAIN: American Ben Spies set the pace under the rain on his Yamaha after the first two practice sessions ahead of this weekend’s Aragon MotoGP on Friday. Spies like most of the MotoGP rides skipped the first session because of the part-wet surface but clocked the fastest time of 2min 00.219sec in the second afternoon session, finishing 11 seconds short of Australian Casey Stoner’s record on a dry surface at the Zaragoza track. “It was a good wet session so we’re happy with it, the bike feels good and we’re quick,” said Spies. “We got a good setting with the bike sorted and we got some new information with the electronics so we’ll see what happens tomorrow with the weather. “As long as everything keeps going smoothly then that’s all we need.” Dani Pedrosa was second on a Honda at 0.066sec with fellow Spaniard and championship leader Jorge Lorenzo third on his Yamaha at 0.527.

“At least we had a full wet session this afternoon to work with the bike and I felt quite good,” said Pedrosa. “It looks like the weather forecast is also bad for tomorrow, so it will be important to take advantage of the morning practice to be well prepared for qualifying.”

Lorenzo admitted the wet conditions had threw up a number of problems ahead of Saturday qualifying. “In the morning we could have practiced but we preferred to stay in the box and save the engine life a little,” said the Spaniard. “This afternoon with full

wet conditions we were able to go out and see what the feeling is with the bike in the rain in case we have a wet race on Sunday. The track is very slippery.” Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi of Italy clocked the eighth fastest time for AFP Ducati at 2.193sec.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: The United States emerged victorious from a pulsating first day’s play in the 39th Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club on Friday, dominating the afternoon fourballs to take a 5-3 overall lead. In a format that habitually favours the Europeans, Davis Love’s team took the fourballs 3-1 after sharing the alternate ball foursomes 2-2 in the morning’s play. All 24 players were in action during a day which started so promisingly for Europe but which ended so positively for the United States who are out to regain the trophy lost in Wales two years ago. “Just everybody played real well and hung in there and had a lot of fun. Seemed like as the sun came out, we just got better and better,” Love said. The American heroes were rookie Keegan Bradley, showing passion and talent in securing two points with Phil

emotional days playing in a Ryder Cup that we’ll ever have,” Mickelson said. “It gets emotion out of every player, good or bad, and this has been one of the

biggest highs that we’ve had. “I just love playing with Keegan. He’s just played so good all day and it’s just kept me up the whole time. It’s been awesome.” Tiger Woods was out of sorts for most of the day, losing twice with established partner Steve Stricker. “I didn’t play very good this morning at all,” Woods said. “I was hitting it awful and not doing anything well. But I hit it good this afternoon.” For Europe, Belgian rookie Nicolas Colsaerts excelled with an eagle and eight birdies, but eyebrows were raised over captain Jose Maria Olazabal’s nonselection of Ryder Cup firebrand Ian Poulter for the fourballs after he and Justin Rose had beaten Woods and Stricker in the morning. World No.1 Rory McIlroy played both sessions with fellow Ulsterman Graeme McDowell and they met with mixed success, winning in the morning and losing in the AFP afternoon.

Colsaerts showed magic on the green, to sink putt after putt as he carried Lee Westwood to a one hole win over Woods and Steve Stricker in the final match of the day.

United States head into Saturday’s foursomes without Tiger Woods, marking just the second time in seven Ryder Cups the 14-time major winner has had to sit down. Woods, who locked up the No. 1 spot in US team qualifying, will sit with partner Steve Stricker as his struggles in Ryder Cup continued on Friday at the Medinah Country Club course. “I think Tiger needs a rest,” said Davis Love. “They told me they would do whatever I asked them to do and I can guarantee you, neither one of them are very happy about it. Just after the wicket was rolled. The wet ball is not good for spinners. It was like bowling in England. That was the main reason we lost,” said Dhoni. “We need to analyse what really happened. New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor had deflected the ball from his knee to the stumps after fumbling the throw, which took television umpire Steve Davis of Australia several minutes to rule the batsman out.
