Setbacks spur student suicides CRIME Rahul Ramakrishna rahul.r@postnoon.com
T
he University of Hyderabad has been in the news for all the wrong reasons of late. An alarming number of students from the university have been committing suicides for various reasons. Recently, an integrated linguistics student Swathi Rani hung herself in her hostel room. Friends and classmates suspect that a sour relationship was the reason for this extreme step. Swathi’s is not an isolated case. Over the past four years, seven students had committed suicide due to personal reasons. On January 5, D Naresh Kumar Reddy, a PhD Literature student consumed poison, following a failed love affair. In the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 over five separate incidents of student suicides were recorded. Non-local students who are not used to unfamiliar faces feel that it takes time to adjust to the university. Akansha Mohapatra, a final year literature student says, “While life in the university is great, given the amount of freedom and space, students from outside the City are bound to feel lonely and left out. If a person feels homesick, he or she might not be able to cope. The university is so big

Students are bound to feel lonely and considering how big the university is, it takes a while for them to adjust to the surroundings. Although most of the suicides take place for personal reasons, life at the university also plays a minor part.” Pratyusha P, an integrated social sciences student, says, “People try and adjust too fast. The pressure to be a part of a social circle is immense. Students should take some time out for thought before making decisions, and personal relationships should be handled very carefully.”

f there is anything that we must learn from the disabled is that they always find a way to work around the system and never do they give up trying. No disability can deter them from pursuing what they want to. They stand tall on their feet, as they should. It is an achievement, much larger in magnitude and much deeper in aspiration, than what meets the eye. Teaching computer software and techniques to the visually impaired (VI) might seem a little strange, at first. But come to Dialogue in the Dark (DID) at Inorbit mall in Hitech City, and you will be forced to change your opinion. During a company meeting, it was discovered that many of the VI guides working here did not know how to use the computer, though they were quite independent otherwise. “We thought it would be a good idea to have them trained, make them independent and empower them by teaching them basic computer applications. It’s a great way to bridge the gap,” recalls Sudha Krishnan, chief operating officer at DID. And soon enough, in the lean time between lunch and dinner, three times a week, the VI guides are taught how to send emails, make word documents and excel sheets, and also access the internet. However, what is most impressive is that the VI guides are taught by another VI guide. Faizal KA, a VI guide here, who has been teaching computer software since January this year, says that it isn’t hard for a VI to learn the computer. “All it requires is a bit of perseverance and patience. Perfecting the keyboard is the first step and soon everything follows. Typically, it takes about two

months to learn how to use a computer,” he said. Having taught how to use the computer earlier, including video chat with the aid of Skype, Faizal says that it is very important to have minimum computer knowledge. “This will empower other visually impaired people and can turn into an alternate career. As a teacher, I am very proud to be teaching them. It gives me a sense of contentment,” he said. Using the help of screen reader software JAWS (Job Access With Speech), in addition to add-on software to read regional languages including Subhashini, Saffa and Vidyaraksha, the guides have learnt a lot from the training these past few months. Shafi, a VI guide, said that prior to this programme, he was a computer illiterate. “I started with the basics and now I can send emails, check my mail and Google whatever I need information on. JAWS is a great aid as well,” he said. The lack of computer knowledge made N Arun Kumar, another VI guide, stay away from his colleagues. He shied away from conversing with them. “But after learning how to use a computer in three months, it gave me a fresh lease of life and new confidence. I feel independent, and now that I have some knowledge, I want to teach other VIs,” he said stressing on how important it was to empower the disabled. “The guides now send me a mail with scheduling of the tours, cafe scheduling, as well as planning for workshops. Earlier, we used to have face-to-face meetings, but as they know so much now, they send me a mail. It has made work easier for them as well as for me,” said Sudha adding that the guides use Facebook to interact with their customers and share their experiences with them. No task is too small or too big for anyone. Ask the visually impaired here, and they will tell you. Truly inspiring.

aving found the futility of restricting visitors to Secretariat, authorities have now kept the gates wide open. The real reason, an insider dropped a line, is that not much is going on at the Secretariat anyway. Why restrict then? But what to do and who to meet is still a mystery for visitors. Ramana Reddy, a visitor from Anantapur, told Postnoon that he had been coming to the education department for six months to request a transfer for his wife. But God only knows where the file is and at what stage it is at. The Secretariat is not meant to be a public-friendly office. So there is no system to guide visitors. If a system of telecom is established, it might have proved useful. But, as a security official remarked, “telephone is useful only if someone is at the receiver.” Now, to make the situation more convenient for employees,
aged and above, feel comfortable.
Azad in dustbin! the chief secretary Pankaj Dwivedi, has ordered that the offices must close before 7pm and anyone working late must seek permission from higher ups. The only beneficiary of these visits seems to be the canteen contractor who gets a large number of customers. There is another side to the Secretariat visit. While the genuine visitors suffer, there are a happy lot — vehicle lifters who
pinch vehicles with a song on their lips. Not just vehicles, laptops, files, artefacts and lights as well. The attempt to burgle the home secretary’s office is fresh in the minds of people. Coming to the thefts, the chief security officer Madhava Rao said that they were suspecting the connivance of some insiders and that the Saifabad police was investigating them.
TRS jittery about Parakala bypolls
POLITICS Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com
T
he T-pot is boiling but now the heat and light are absorbed rather than given out. The TRS and TJAC (Telangana Action Committee) have of late been working at cross purposes. Leaders say privately that the loss they suffered at the Mahbubnagar constituency during the bypolls to the BJP has widened the gulf between the parent and the offspring.
The TRS does not want anything to do with the BJP but the TJAC is not sure. It is said that the TJAC support to the BJP has helped the saffron party to win the seat. The TRS chief K Chandrasekhar is worried that the bypolls at Parakala might turn out to be a repeat of Mahbubnagar, though the party has managed to rope in former director general of police P Ramulu, who is considered a good catch. The reason why TRS is so jittery about Parakala is that the Parakala verdict is supposed to be crucial for TRS and TJAC. The Telangana political JAC convenor Kodandaram told Postnoon that he would try to see that the BJP and TRS think in a broader perspective for Telangana rather than contesting against each other making way for others. But KCR wants TJAC to wean the BJP away from contesting the Parakala seat. This seems asking for moon for the saffron party, fresh from the Mahbubnagar win is in no mood to forget Parakala even to please its own parents. The local Parakala TJAC, it is learnt, is going to support BJP. Other members of the TJAC were putting pressure on the leadership to take a firm decision on building political unity. Kodandaram said he would take a decision on the by-elections only after meeting with TRS chief KCR and the BJP chief Kishan Reddy. But it can be said that KCR has won the first round by taking P Ramulu away from the BJP.
Ever since sanitation and housekeeping were outsourced one can see heaps of old computers, furniture, used bottles, old papers, piles of garbage etc in every nook and corner. The walls are adorned by scarlet spit marks. Corruption, instead of computerisation, has been growing in the Secretariat. Despite computerisation, files are still preferred as most employees, who are middle
The state of affairs is best explained in the manner of Secretariat dealing with documents. Recently, retrieved from the dustbin was Ghulam Nabi Azad’s letter regarding central allocation for AP. The letter was received at the CMO. Gopal Reddy, leader of the government employees association said, “There was no proper governance and accountability since last several months in the State.”

“O
ver 50 per cent of children below the age of 5 in India are underweight. Escalating food prices have ensured that the poor constantly reduce their intake. Yet, we lag behind in adopting technology while countries with surplus and relatively inexpensive food continue to embrace it,” says GM Subba Rao, composing unit, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN). NIN is one of the oldest organisations that approaches the problems of nutrition, not just physical and medical but also many social and biological aspects. It aims to identify various dietary problems prevalent among different segments of the population. It also continously monitors the diet and nutrition situation of the country and links nutrition research with other health programmes. The Institute has excellent facilities for undertaking laboratory investigations covering a wide range of specialities like biochemistry, food chemistry, pathology, immunology, haematology, microbiology, endocrinology, physiology, toxicology and molecular biology. NIN is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments required for modern research investigations. NIN director B Sesikeran explained how low cost pathogen kits are used to check food contamination. “The municipal medical officers are responsible for detection of adulteration and we help them with these kits,” he added. “Our mission is to enable food and nutrition security conducive to good health, growth and development and increase productivity through dedicated research,” said Sesikeran.
ax payer public of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) can hope for better sanitation from tomorrow, thanks to the tireless works of special commissioner Navin Mittal and the encouragement of mayor Mohd Majid Hussain. The existing contract system for sanitation had been found to be promoting ghost workers and corrupt practices. A lot of workers on roll and a few on roads has been the rule, which now will change for the better. Officials at the GHMC explained that the new system will not only ensure better work but save `50 crore for the GHMC. The corporation will directly engage the workers and pay them rather than paying to contractors.
New system In the erstwhile system there had been 950 private agencies engaging 18,000 workers and the corporation has been paying `200 crore to them. The system, said officials, encouraged absenteeism and ghost workers where agencies showed on record workers engaged in sanitation but in
actual there would be very few. The result has been piling up garbage, rotting roadsides and unhealthy condition everywhere. The new system will have 2,578 groups of seven members each. The strength of the employees would be the same as before but these groups will have bank accounts of employees and the salaries will be paid directly. These are mostly self help groups comprised mainly of women. The corporation saves the 10.30 per cent service tax. This, together with the obviation of bogus workers, will save the corpora-

It would not only save public money but also help in containing corruption and irregularities at ground level,” GHMC additional commissioner (Health & Sanitation) L Vandan Kumar told Postnoon. Kumar further added, “The
registration of new groups is going on at a steady pace. In some circles, we have already completed the process. In the next few days we will complete the entire process.” As per the agreement, the corporation would pay `6,700 to each worker every month. Recently, the mayor Majid Hussain and commissioner MT Krishna Babu held a review meeting with the officials of the sanitation wing and directed them to complete the enrolment process to implement the system from next month.

ostel life is a challenging one. You come out of the familiar surrounding of your home and enter a whole new world filled with strangers and unfamiliar experiences. However, hostels are a prime requirement for those who leave their homes in the quest for higher education. “Life in a hostel is different from that at home. The greatest blessing of hostel life is the independence it grants you,” says Karuna, a first year M Tech student, Osmania University. The OU girl’s hostel is a very spacious one. It is in the midst of OU campus and is surrounded by greenery and has a pleasant environment. It houses 3,000 students approximately and has various wings — each wing has seven rooms. Each room accommodates 6-8 students and is equipped with beds, study tables, chairs and cupboards. The hostel also has common rooms that students can use for indoor games, discussion and get togethers. Indoor games like caroms,
chess and table tennis are provided within the hostel. There is a separate badminton court in the hostel and sports equipment is provided by the hostel’s sports committee. Srujana, an MSc physics first year student says, “The food here is delicious. We have various facilities such as internet and a TV room. We have very good electric-
ity facility too. The hostel also provides us with newspapers and various magazines so we can stay up to date with world affairs.” According to the students who reside in the OU girls hostel, there are very few problems that they face. “The change in weather is causing water problems, but the management is very quick in responding to our complaints.
They make sure that the girls have no complaints. We are allowed to use cell phones and are free to go out till 8.30pm. The hostel has tight security at night as well as day. The evolution of Indian cinema It’s a miracle that Indian cinema has withstood the test of time despite the vast cultural differences in the past 100 years. Postnoon pays an ode to one of the biggest cultural impacts that India has witnessed in the 20th century — Cinema Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

n April 21, 1913, the rich and famous of Bombay queued up to witness India’s first indigenous full length feature film, Raja Harishchandra. Dada Saheb Phalke, who directed the film, began a revolution in India through celluloid. The French might have introduced the concept of moving images, but little did the world know that India would one day become the largest film industry in the world. It’s been 100 years since Raja Harishchandra, which was roughly about 40 minutes long, was screened in India and today, movies occupy a special place in everyone’s heart. After the success of the film, several filmmakers in Bombay and Madras began making silent films. By the mid 1920s, Madras had become the epicentre for all film related activities for Telugu and Tamil films. Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu, SS Vasan, AV Meiyappan set up production houses in Madras to shoot Telugu and Tamil films. The year 1931 was a monumental one for Indian cinema, thanks to the introduction of sound in films. Alam Ara, Bhakta Prahalada and Kalidas, the first talkie films in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil, were all released within a span of few months. By the early 40s, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil film industries had made significant strides and some of the actors like Ashok Kumar, Chittor V Nagaiah, ANR, MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and PU Chinnappa became quite
popular with the masses. Interestingly, most South Indian films made before 1950s were either based on mythology or folklore, although some films did touch upon social themes. As time passed, other film industries like the Bengali, Malayalam and Kannada also rose to prominence. It’s not without a reason why 50s and 60s were considered as the Golden Age of Indian cinema. Filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy, Mehboob Khan, K Asif, Raj Kapoor, KV Reddy, L V Prasad and Ramu Kariat made waves in their respective film industries and they went on to make classics like Pather Panchali, Madhumati, Do Bheega Zameen, Mother India, Mughal E Azam, Mayabazar and Chemmeen among many other films. In the south, NTR, ANR, MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Rajkumar, Prem Nazir dominated the film industry for more than three decades before making way for the next generation of actors like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Mammootty, Mohanlal, Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna. The 70s completely changed the way films were made, especially in Hindi film industry. It was the age of the angry young man and Amitabh Bachchan rose to prominence thanks to the success of Sholay, Zanjeer and Deewar. While Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Jitendra and Dharmendra continued to bask in the glory of back to back hits, the actresses weren’t far behind. Right from the time of Savitri, Vyjayanthi Mala, Nargis and Waheeda Rahman to Sridevi,
Rekha, Smita Patil, Hema Malini, several actresses became heartthrobs of the nation. It wasn’t just mainstream cinema, even parallel cinema led by Bengali and Malayali filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Shaji Karun made a huge impact on how Indian films are received especially in Europe and the US. The liberalisation of Indian
economy had a huge impact on Indian film industry as well. Pop culture became part of especially Hindi cinema, although film industries in the south tried hard to retain their strengths and continued to make films for the masses. Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan became the most popular actors of Hindi cinema whose fame had crossed borders. Family dramas and socio-economic issues
took a backseat and filmmakers began churning out action films with plenty of romance. By now cinema had become the epitome of fantasy. In recent years, Hindi cinema has undergone a massive change due to the emergence of new age filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap, Rajkumar Hirani, Dibakar Banerjee and Vishal Bhardwaj. Of late, Tamil and Marathi cinema has witnessed similar changes with several new filmmakers coming forth to cater to a niche audience. As the rising cost of production and escalating budgets continue to pose a huge challenge to producers and filmmakers, Indian cinema has reached new shores to cater to the Indian diaspora in those countries. All said and done, the concept of Indian cinema is itself quite misleading. There’s no doubt that technological and creative advancements in each film industry have influenced filmmakers in other film industries, it’s difficult to define what exactly Indian cinema means. The films made in one part of the country are totally different from their counterparts. It almost resembles our universe which is constantly expanding yet there’s a balance in the way things function. Indian cinema, despite all its idiosyncrasies, has been a reflection of the socioeconomic, political and cultural changes that took place in the country. As we continue to look forward to an promising future, perhaps our past holds the key to describe what makes cinema so special.

here is huge transformation of thinking in adopting biotechnology for the growth and research in the agriculture sector. The agribiotech industry is turning out to be the backbone for the agriculture sector. The industry is still at a nascent stage but showing a growth rate of around 10 per cent, said KRK Reddy, chairman and managing director, Sri Biotech. Biotechnology is not limited to itself. It is being adopted by different industries. The seed and fertiliser companies have started their own bio-tech wing investing whatever money possible for the research and development. department of bio-technology (DBT) is also supporting the companies with funds in the publicprivate partnership (PPP) mode, he said. However, the companies do not have strong finances of their own as it takes huge investments for the research. It may take a decade for research, development and approvals to get revenues on a product. The company has to survive the process servicing debts at 13-14 per cent. It could be really difficult for the company until and unless they have alternate revenue sources. It is a really challenge to run a

eeling under a severe power crunch, the Tamil Nadu government has drawn up plans to encourage energy efficient systems using solar and other forms of energy in the coming months. The proposals include provision of subsidised solar pumps, generation based incentive scheme for domestic solar roof tops, besides presenting awards to those who use solar power lights effectively. The government has proposed to provide “generation based incentive for domestic solar roof-tops for a total maximum capacity of 50 MW during this financial year”, the energy department said. Besides this, the government is also mulling providing subsidised solar pumps on a pilot basis to select applicants. Energy efficient agricultural pump-sets would be made mandatory for new connections. PTI
company with the huge costs on human resource, research consumables, utilities and infrastructure and at the same time competing with global companies, he said. Talking about government ini-
tiatives, Reddy said, “the government is doing its part, especially from last three years by offering loans at five per cent by the TDB and one per cent by DBT. If the R&D is recognised, there are exemptions on excise and
income tax in the case of research and development based industries. The other challenge for the industry is the quality of human resource. There is a strong syllabus but quality of teaching is poor, especially in the area of practical knowledge. There is a huge gap between demand and supply of qualified human resource. There are very few companies in the State and there are thousands of graduates coming every year. Biotech companies are not labour intensive, where you can employ thousands. Graduates and post graduates of industry are ready to work for very less pay or even for free to get into the industry, Reddy said. Most of the engineering colleges are closing their biotech branches. There is a need to improve the quality of education and at the same time reducing number of seats for the betterment of the students and industry, he said. Talking about the future of the industry, he said, the growth of the industry is going to continue with the public private partnerships. There is huge research happening in the areas like transgenic crops, crop nutrition, crop protection and crop improvement. The industry will be revolutionising farming sector with its new technologies in the future.
Austerity steps to render 202 mn people jobless in 2012, says ILO GENEVA: The International Labour Organisation warned Monday that austerity measures are hurting job markets worldwide and predicted global unemployment of 202 million people in 2012, up six million from last year. The ILO’s World of Work Report 2012 said fiscal austerity and labour market reforms had “devastating consequences” for employment while mostly failing to cut deficits, and warned that governments risked fueling unrest unless they combined tighter spending with job creation. “The austerity and regulation strategy was expected to lead to more growth, which is not happening,” Raymond Torres, director of the ILO’s Institute for International Labour Studies, told journalists in Geneva. “The strategy of austerity actually has been counterproductive from the point of view of its very objective of supporting confi-

It predicted a global unem-
ployment rate of 6.1 percent in 2012 -- 202 million people, up three percent from the provisional estimate of 196 million for 2011. It forecast a rise to 6.2 percent in 2013 as another five million people become unemployed. “It is unlikely that the world economy will grow at a sufficient pace over the next couple of years to both close the existing jobs deficit and provide employment for the over 80 million people expected to enter the labour market,” the report said. It warned that trends were especially worrying in Europe, where nearly two-thirds of countries had seen unemployment go up since 2010. It said labour market recovery had also stalled in major economies such as Japan and the United States. A growing and better-educated workforce was meanwhile struggling to find enough good jobs in places such as China, it added. AFP

CULTURES AND PEOPLE IN DANGER The 150 dams proposed in Arunachal Pradesh could devastate the state’s vibrant indigenous cultures and change them into downtrodden people, says Jason Overdorf from Bangladesh and illegal migrants from Nepal shows, they are difficult to expel.

ot long ago, the tribal denizens of this northeast Indian state cautioned their drinking buddies: “Don’t piss too hard, or the government will come along to set up a hydropower project.” With state legislators inking pacts with developers faster than once a month, and accepting millions of dollars in upfront payments, the joke hit home. Developers, planners and politicians view Arunachal Pradesh as an ideal site for hydroelectric power projects, due to its 10 major river basins and the state’s sparse population. But even though the more than 150 dams proposed for the state won’t displace hundreds of thousands of people, the cost to local communities promises to be devastating. The area is home to 20 indigenous tribal groups, the largest of which, the Nishi, numbers around 300,000 people. Because of their small size, entire tribal groups, clustered together by some commonalities of language and culture, could be wiped out as a result of these proposed dams. Already, some of the 80-odd sub-tribes, which each have their own unique customs and number as few as 10,000 people, are fading away.
“This whole area is mine,” said Mite Lingi, chairman of an Idu Mishmi tribal organisation called the Idu Indigenous People’s Council. “This mountain, this river, this land. Suddenly you come and start talking all these legal points. If that doesn’t anger you, what would?” Those “legal points” are reminiscent of the treaties that relegat-
ed America’s native peoples to reservations or the doctrine of terra nullius — land owned by no one — through which the British Crown usurped most of a continent from indigenous Australians. Since prior to India’s independence from Britain in 1947, Arunachal’s indigenous tribes have been protected from mass migration from other parts of
India by laws that require a special permit to enter the state and prohibit outsiders from settling here. But there were no such protections from the forces of the state itself, which turned over millions of acres of tribal land to the forest department for logging and conservation. Once outsiders are allowed in, past experience with refugees
A dozen-odd large dams, including the majority state-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s (NHPC) Dibang Multipurpose Project, are slated for the Dibang River Basin, home to the endangered Idu Mishmi tribe. The government and local supporters argue that these projects will benefit the nation by providing a cheap, clean and renewable source of electricity, and benefit local residents by moderating the effects of floods and providing the state with free power and millions of dollars in revenue for the construction of roads, schools and hospitals. But opponents argue that the drive for progress is coloured by a 19th century-style ethnocentric desire to “civilise the savages.” They say planners have underestimated the social impact of the displacement of local communities and an influx of labourers from outside the state. “We are about 13,000,” said Tone Mickrow, general secretary of the All Idu Mishmi Students Union, another tribal organisation. “Once these dams come up, the employees of one single company will be larger than our entire community.” GLOBALPOST
A white ribbon flutters towards safe motherhood Ranjana Narayan
JODHPUR: Will the baby live? Will the mother survive childbirth? Not very long ago, it was left to fate to decide how a pregnant woman and her unborn child would fare, but a slow change towards birth preparedness is taking place in some villages of Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district. Now women like Mamta, Goga, Pushpa and Ganga care. Hiding their faces behind colourful, pink and red odhnis or veils, and laughing shyly over the discussion on pregnancy and birth, these women are becoming aware of the need to eat properly, check blood pressure and weight regularly and write down the phone number of the local jeep or van driver to call when birth pains begin or in case of any emergency. Rajasthan has among the highest maternal mortality ratio in India at 335 per 100,000 live births. But in a project coordinated
Goga with her two-year-old daughter in Khetasar. She took special care during the birth of her third child. RANJANA N by SUMA-Rajasthan White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, in partnership with White Ribbon Alliance India and GRAVIS (Gramin Vikas Vigyan Samiti) in 10 villages of Osian block
of Jodhpur district, the results have begun to show. When Goga, in her mid 20s, had her first child, a son, nine years ago and her daughter, who is now two years old, she wasn’t
aware of the need to have iron tablets, or get herself weighed every month to ensure she and her baby were fine or get her BP checked. But when she was carrying her newest addition, a daughter who is now five and a half months old, she paid attention to her diet. “I ate greens, bajra rotis, iron tablets, took tetanus injections. The jaapa (birth) went off well,” Goga, smiling shyly, told IANS in Khetasar village of Osian bloc. Goga, whose husband is a carpenter in Surat, Gujarat, managed to save Rs.5,000 by putting aside some money for her delivery every month. But she didn’t have to spend a paisa. In fact, under the Janani Suraksha Yojana of the National Rural Health Mission of the central government, Goga got a cheque for `1,400 a fortnight after the birth and was also compensated for the `300 she spent on the vehicle to reach the primary health centre at Osian, 27km away.
In between her first and second child, Goga had three miscarriages, which is a common story among the women here. She underwent medical treatment at Umaid Hospital in Jodhpur for nine months at a cost of `10,000, she said. “Attitudes (to birth preparedness) have begun to change, and that is a big thing,” Smita Bajpai, programme officer of Chetna, an NGO, said. “In our initial phase of work here, we had to deal with a lot of hostility from family elders. The in-laws would tear up our posters and other material we would bring to educate women, and tell us to go away. It took us some persistence to break through.” Ganga, who has four daughters, gave birth to a little boy a few months ago. Her eldest daughter is 12. A resident of Khabada hamlet, set among the sand dunes, Ganga had three miscarriages before the birth of her fifth child. IANS

GHAZIABAD: Dentist Nupur Talwar was Monday taken into custody shortly after surrendering before a Ghaziabad court hearing the May 2008 twin murder case of her teenaged daughter Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj. She applied for bail immediately after her arrest, but the Central Bureau of Investigation opposed the plea. Her lawyer RK Saini moved the court for Nupur’s bail but the magistrate reserved the order for two hours, during which the agency will also file its reply. Nupur, who was accompanied by her husband Rajesh Talwar, was seen reciting
‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in the court room. Nobody was allowed in the court room except the CBI officials and lawyers for the den-
tist couple. Nupur Talwar faced a nonbailable warrant issued by a CBI special court in Ghaziabad after she failed to appear in court as directed. Police guarded the court premises as Nupur Talwar and her husband Rajesh reached around 10.15am. She was taken into the court from a back door. On Friday, the Supreme Court had directed Nupur Talwar to surrender before the magistrate’s court. The apex court bench, headed by Justice AK Patnaik, had said that she could apply for bail after surrendering and the court would decide on the issue expe-
ditiously and on merit. The apex court had passed the order while adjourning till Friday the hearing of her Nupur Talwar review petition of its order directing her to face trial in the double murder case. The dentist couple’s 14-yearold daughter Aarushi was found dead inside their Noida residence in May 2008 with her throat slit. The body of the Talwars’ domestic servant Hemraj, initially a suspect in the case, was recovered from the terrace a day later. The Talwar couple is accused in the case. Rajesh Talwar is out on bail. Oz billionaire to build Titanic II Martin Parry
SYDNEY: One of Australia’s richest men, Clive Palmer, on Monday unveiled plans to build a 21st century version of the doomed Titanic in China, with its first voyage from England to New York set for 2016. Palmer, a self-made mining billionaire, said he had commissioned state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct Titanic II with the same dimensions as its predecessor. “It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-theart 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems,” Palmer said in a statement. “Titanic II will sail in the northern hemisphere and her maiden voyage from England to North America is scheduled for late 2016.” He added that he had invited the Chinese navy to escort the Titanic II to New York. The announcement comes just weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic, which went down on April 15, 1912 after striking an iceberg on its first voyage, from Southampton to New York. Palmer said the new ship would be a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked
on the original, which sank with the loss of 1,514 passengers and crew. “These people produced work that is still marvelled at more than 100 years later and we want that spirit to go on for another 100 years,” he said. Titanic was commissioned by White Star Line and was the largest liner in the world at the time. Palmer said he has estab-
lished his own shipping company, Blue Star Line, with the new vessel having the same specifications as its predecessor — 270 metres long (885 feet), 53 metres high and weighing some 40,000 tonnes. It will have 840 rooms and nine decks with design work in conjunction with an historical research team underway. No figure was given on how much it would cost.
The only changes to the original would be below the water line including welding and not riveting, a bulbous bow for greater fuel efficiency, diesel generation and enlarged rudder and bow thrusters for increased manoeuvrability. “Titanic II will be the ultimate in comfort and luxury with onboard gymnasiums and swimming pools, libraries, high class restaurants and luxury cabins,”
Palmer said. The ship would also include an exhibition room which will be located in the space of the original’s coal boilers which will showcase his home state of Queensland. Palmer is estimated to be Australia’s fifth richest person, worth more than Aus$5 billion (US$5.2 billion), thanks to his vast coal and other mining assets in Queensland and Western Australia. He has also branched out into tourism and owns the luxury Coolum resort on the Sunshine Coast, while recently saying he wants to move into the media industry, a sector dominated by Fairfax and Rupert Murdoch’s News Limited. His decision to commission a Chinese shipbuilding yard, which will also construct other luxury liners for the tycoon, reinforces his ties to the country, which is a key buyer of his coal and iron ore. “China currently produces around two to three percent of the world’s luxury ships but is looking to challenge the Europeans who have around 75 percent of this market. “The Chinese ship building industry with our assistance wants to be a major player in this market.” The original Titanic was built in Belfast. LA marks riots anniversary with unity call Leila Macor
LOS ANGELES: Los Angeles community leaders issued a call for unity Sunday on the 20th anniversary of the city’s deadly riots, one of the worst spasms of violence in modern US history. But a small number of African American protestors used the anniversary to lash police at the epicenter of 1992 riots in deprived South LA, which left 53 people dead and caused more than $1 billion worth of damage. The historic race-fueled mayhem was sparked by the acquittal of police officers caught on video beating black motorist Rodney King, but were fueled by ethnic tensions and huge economic disparities in LA. “We felt we were under attack,” community activist Morris Griffin told a crowd at the junction of Florence and Normandie avenues, where some 150 mostly African Americans gathered for the “speakout” event. A short time later another rally developed on the other side of the junction, with Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) representatives as well as Latino, African

But the initial gathering, while dwindling to some 50-60 people, turned more negative, with protestors at one point shouting “f#@k the police” as a female rapper spoke, an AFP correspondent reported from the scene. “In my opinion they’re not part of the solution because everything I hear from that side (of the street)
is very negative and confrontational,” said Michael Crosby, head of the local 77th Street Division LAPD Clergy Council. “We already know what the problem is, so let’s take some efforts to try to build a better community,” he added. Local radio and other media have hosted wall-to-wall debates about the lessons learned from the unrest, triggered by the acquittal
of four police officers over the beating of King. King — who has released an autobiography timed with the anniversary — was 26 years old when a group of white police officers brutally beat him while a bystander videotaped them from his apartment window on March 3, 1991. A year later, on April 29, 1992, an all-white jury acquitted four police officers over his assault. Hundreds of thousands of people poured into the streets in anger, igniting a wave of deadly violence and arson that swept through large areas of Los Angeles. The run-up to the anniversary has seen a surge of reflection on what has changed in the decades since the riots, which were centered on South LA, primarily composed of African American and Hispanic communities. On Sunday, LAPD assistant chief Michel Moore held a show of unity with leaders of the Korean American Coalition, the AntiDefamation League, the LA Urban League and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, among others. “We recognize the tragedy of

‘Chinese dissident in US embassy’ BEIJING: Chinese rights activist Chen Guangcheng is in the US embassy in Beijing, his friend and fellow dissident Hu Jia said on Monday. Hu, who was detained over the weekend for questioning in the affair, also said Chinese security officials indicated that Chen had met with US ambassador Gary Locke since the activist’s dramatic flight from house arrest. “He is in the embassy,” Hu, who had met with Chen after his escape, told AFP when asked whether he could confirm rumours of Chen’s whereabouts. “They asked when Chen met with ambassador Locke,” he added. “So it seems very clear that he has met with the American ambassador. I had no way of answering. I do not know what is going on inside. But when I heard this I was very surprised and excited,” Hu added. Chen, a self-taught lawyer, fled house arrest in Shandong province on April 22 with the help of supporters from under the noses of dozens of guards and subsequently recorded a video alleging abuses against him and his family. Since then, rumours have swirled that Chen had made it to safety in the US embassy, but the embassy and State Department officials in Washington have refused to confirm or deny them. China will no doubt be extremely upset about the US harbouring a fierce critic of its government, and the sensitive situation threatens to become a major diplomatic row. AFP
NAYPYIDAW: UN chief Ban Ki-moon held landmark talks with Myanmar’s president on Monday in a high-profile show of support for changes sweeping through the former pariah state. During his three-day visit, Ban is expected to urge further steps towards democracy and appeal for unfettered humanitarian access to tens of thousands of refugees who have fled ethnic conflict.

French candidates battle scandals PARIS: French presidential
frontrunner Francois Hollande headed into the last round of his battle with Nicolas Sarkozy on Sunday, with both candidates threatened by the shadow of scandal. Socialist challenger Hollande is the favourite to win next week’s vote, but his campaign was shaken over the weekend by a new episode in the saga of his party’s ties to disgraced former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn. On Saturday, Socialist lawmaker Julien Dray invited Hollande’s campaign director Pierre Moscovici, communications director Manuel Valls and former partner Segolene Royal to a drinks party to celebrate his birthday.
But he did not warn them he had also invited StraussKahn to attend the bash, held at a popular disco bar on the notorious Rue St Denis in Paris, a street which has historically been associated with prostitution. Royal was furious when she learned that Strauss-Kahn was on the guest list, and stormed off without meeting him, but the news embarrassed the campaign and forced Hollande to publicly underline Strauss-Kahn’s pariah status. “He no longer has a role in political life and thus should not be part of a campaign nor in any images that could potentially lead people to believe he’s coming back,”
Hollande said, in a television interview. Strauss-Kahn was once expected to be the Socialist candidate but became a toxic figure last year when he was accused of sexual assault in New York and is now under investigation in France over alleged ties to a vice ring. Royal, who was the defeated Socialist candidate in the 2007 race and has had four children with Hollande, expressed anger over the invitation. “It’s lucky that I didn’t find myself face-to-face with him!” she said. “I left because it is out of the question for me to meet Dominique StraussKahn, if only out of concern for the rights and respect due to women.” AFP
Bahrain’s hunger striker is new idol DUBAI: A nearly three-month long hunger strike has turned activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, awaiting a final court ruling on Monday along with 14 other jailed activists, into a symbol of Bahrain’s uprising that began last year. One of their lawyers told AFP on Sunday that he expects the case, now in Bahrain’s highest appeals court, the Court of Cessation, to be reviewed. The 52-year-old father of four, on hunger strike since February 8, is among 21 activists — seven of them tried in absentia — who were convicted in June of plotting to overthrow the Gulf kingdom’s rulers. Seven of them, including Khawaja, have been jailed for life while 14 oth-
ers were sentenced to between two and 15 years in prison. Khawaja, arrested in last April shortly after the Sunni regime crushed a month-long
Shiite-led uprising, will continue his hunger strike — the fourth since his arrest — until he is “released or dead,” sources close to him say.
I “don’t know if he’s alive, don’t know if he’s awake, don’t know if he’s in Bahrain... I don’t know anything about him,” his wife Khadija Moussawi told AFP. She said she has not heard from her husband since April 23, two days after he decided to stop drinking water. Authorities have repeatedly said that Khawaja is in good health. But Moussawi, who met her husband for the first time in London 30 years ago, doubts it. “They say he is in good health, but if that’s true, then why won’t they let me speak to him, why won’t they let me see him?” she asked. Their daughter Zeinab was also arrested on Saturday after taking part in an anti-government sit-in. AFP

Good advice 'Don’t use your heart, use your mind' on April 24 was well written! Though the article does not imply that “heart” should be completely ignored at office, it does tend to give more preference to mind. Not sure if this mind comes under EQ or IQ but EQ is definitely needed, in fact much more needed, than IQ. Maybe emotional burst outs come under bad management of EQ. KSM Phanindra by email
Tapping the Zeitgeist The centrespread on documentaries entitled ‘This is not a film’. I wish the author used the movie Zeitgeist Addendum (the second Zeitgeist film), not Zeitgeist the movie, and also stepped away from using the description conspiracy theories. Don’t get me wrong, I do think the first film is conspiracy-orientated, which is not my cup of tea. But the SECOND and THIRD films…oh my! Linking those films with the original would be completely unfair and not begin to describe the breadth of the new information presented. Peter Joseph does an amazing job bringing little-known concepts about the very nature of our society to the fore. It would be cruel not to watch this movie, because there is so much life-transforming information in the above mentioned films that it will blow you away when you first watch it. I highly suggest skipping over the first Zeitgeist and checking out the other two Zeitgeist movies on Youtube. Quinn By e-mail
Injustice to City
The fact that there are no offline centres for AIEEE in the City this year is appalling. The officials at AIEEE need to understand that it is not feasible for many students to travel to different cities to write an exam. Besides, with so many competitive exams scheduled during this month, this constant travel puts an added financial and mental pressure on students, not to mention a hectic schedule. For parents too, ensuring that their children reach exam centres on time becomes a matter of concern. While it is good that AIEEE has switched to an online format as well, they should allocate centres in the City for offline exams too, since there aren’t too many takers for the online exam as yet. They cannot force students to travel just to write Sashi Kumar their exam. SR Nagar

he Child sexual abuse has been linked to homosexuality for many years now and there is an ongoing debate of the influence of abuse on a person’s sexuality. There are many people worldwide who believe that most homosexual youth were sexually abused as kids and those that claim to have not faced abuse, were abused at such a young age that their conscious memory cannot recollect it. There are many studies that show that a large percentage of gay men faced sexual abuse of some sort when they were young. Most of them faced abuse at the hands of someone from their own family and for many of them it was women who abused them. Many psychologists claim that everyone is born heterosexual and influences in their life that caused some trauma to their minds, changed them into homosexuals. They go so far as to say that certain ‘clinics’ can offer them therapy and turn them back to heterosexuals, the way they were meant to be. A majority of psychological organisations across the world claim no hand in supporting this theory but such theories are rampant and many people find it easier to believe that once they have the root cause of why their child turned gay, they can eliminate the root cause and turn the child straight again. Joseph Nicolosi, a psychologist in California, goes so far as to claim that he has found the perfect ‘psychodynamic’ reparative therapy for people that will turn them straight. Strangely, to contradict the point of all people being born ‘straight’, there aren’t many studies showing the correlation of homosexuality in bisexuals, lesbians or even the transgender folks. There are horror stories of what parents force their children to do, to force homosexuality from their minds. According to a study by a group of doctors in the US, one in five men is abused as a child. There is no study to check how many of them turn homosexual, nor is there a study to show why many turn gay and many go on living

traumatic lives burdened with memories of their troubled past. There also are many myths that indicate that homosexual men and women have more tendencies to abuse children and turn them gay when compared to straight folk. This, despite the staggering number of heterosexual people found to be paedophiles. Many research papers claim they have evidence to prove that homosexuality is definitely influenced by child abuse, while there are many who claim that this is completely untrue. I recently read a blog about a person who was abused as a child by a male adult but what is interesting about the article was that this person already knew he was gay before he was abused. I’m not sure if psychologists would argue that the person turned gay after getting a hint of the impending abuse. What struck me as unique about the blog post was that this person went on great lengths to erase the memory of the sexual
abuse and even tried treatments that would turn him straight. But, at the end of it what helped him the most was coming out and talking about his abuse and embracing his sexuality. The studies that show a correlation of sexual abuse and homosexuality give parents the false hope that they can turn their children straight. Instead of fighting the root cause of abuse, irrespective of whether the child turns homosexual, parents see a new ray of hope that this change is reversible. Many parents also fear that homosexual adults are very open about their sexuality and this in turn could affect minds of younger kids and turn them gay. To fight this notion and set things right, LGBT organisations throughout the world are building homosexual and heterosexual alliances to encourage people to have a healthy dialogue and get myths out of the way. THE RISE AND RISE of Myanmar
ust a few years ago Myanmar was a totalitarian pit, supported only by the Chinese and petted into purring by India. Pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest and any chance of her ever contesting another election seemed remote. The military junta ruled with an iron fist destroying any measure of rapprochement from the outside world. Sanctions were heaped upon a country mired in poverty and riddled by institutionalised corruption, they began to bite, but the leadership was steadfast in their myopia. But look at Myanmar now, Suu Kyi is set to swear the oath in parliament after winning a seat in a surprisingly fair election. David Cameron, Hillary Clinton, and Ban Ki-moon have all sauntered into the country, feting its volte face. Photo ops with a beaming Suu Kyi have adorned front pages across the world. Now sanctions have been eased, and there’s every chance of them being totally lifted by 2013. Myanmar is becoming a diplomatic success story, and one with enough lessons for us while dealing with Syria and Iran. We must learn, or else we’re doomed to fail…again.

he worst are those days when you are almost done with school and don't want to leave your friends. Going to college isn't like what they show in the movies. Moving among strangers, seniors waiting to rag you, assign-ments, long and dreary bus rides and more. All in all when you actually start college, it doesn't really seem like the best time of your life. “I loved my school and did not want to leave it at all. When I joined college it was just plain scary! Girls were always so dressed up. If we ever bunked, a message was sent home. There was no playground. Only a basketball court cum parking. It was a herculean task for me to get myself out of bed every morning to go to college,” recalls Rachana, a final year student, Villa Marie College. Everyone expects college to be better than school. Prathyush Reddy,
a final year student at BITS says, “Life in BITS is different. We don't have any regulation on attendance, no dress code, we have open gate system but academics are difficult. We had exams every now and then and most of my time went studying. I thought I would never have fun in college.” If this is the case then why is it that everyone tells you that college days are the most liberal, carefree days of your life?
Akhila Bejju, a third year mass communication student at Villa Marie’s says, “At first, everything was very vague including my friends circle and my plans for the future. But somewhere down the line I started having fun. Be it eating at a roadside chinese fast food joint or sleeping in the last bench, bunking college and going for a movie or dancing my heart out in front of 400 people. It might not be the easiest, it might be boring or full of fun with too much time to waste and too many friends to keep a track of. It soon becomes the cherished chapters in the story of your life. And as diverse as the stories may be, this holds true for everyone's college life.

Obsessed with inches? Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

ecently a 32-year-old medical practitioner passed away due to starvation. She weighed a mere 28 kilos and had been obsessed with shedding the kilos for according to her she was “fat.” Sounds far fetched? But for many youngsters this obsession with their weight and body shape is a reality. The craze to be thin instead of fit leads several youngsters into the whirlpool of eating disorders that can often have not-so-pleasant repercussions. “This 32-year-old girl had been battling anorexia for the last 10 years. Watching her rapidly lose weight and yet be obsessed with her imagined fatness, her parents brought her to me for treatment. But she was just way too obsessed with her weight. If she gained even half a kilo she would stop eating completely. Her family tried to force her to eat, cajoled her and even coaxed her. Nothing worked. We counselled her and put her on medication, but she was so determined to lose weight that she even stopped taking her medication and finally passed away,” says Dr Minhaj Nasserabadi, a psychiatrist at Apollo Hospital, who explains that anorexia is a reality for many youngsters. “People with anorexia are obsessed with losing weight and will completely stay away from food. To look at they will be thin or even underweight, but according to their percep-
Symptoms of anorexia n Become very thin or emaciated n Be obsessed with weight control n Weigh herself or himself repeatedly n Count or portion food carefully n Only eat certain foods, avoid foods like dairy, meat, wheat, etc. n Exercise excessively n Feel fat n Withdraw from social activities
Symptoms of bulimia n Fear weight gain n Unhappy with body size, shape, and weight n Make excuses to go to the bathroom immediately after meals n Only eat diet or low-fat foods n Go on binge eating sprees n Regularly buy laxatives, diuretics, or enemas n Spend a lot of time working out or trying to work off calories n Withdraw from social activities tion they are overweight or fat. On the other hand bulimia is also a problem many people face. In their bid to lose weight, people with bulimia often forcefully purge whatever
If your daughter has been dropping kilos rapidly, it’s time you sought help for her eating disorder they’ve eaten, either by vomiting or by using laxatives. The difference between anorexia and bulimia is that anorexic patients are extremely thin while bulimic people are either overweight or obese. This mainly occurs because people with bulimia, though obsessed with losing weight often give in to their cravings and binge eat,” says Dr Sri Lakshmi, psychiatrist at Roshni counselling centre.
Causes Anorexia and bulimia are usually caused due to psychological factors like peer pressure, cultural and social pressure, feeling uncomfortable in their own bodies and lack of confidence about how they look. Often these eating disorders develop during adolescence or early adulthood, but can also occur in childhood or
later in adulthood in some cases. The condition is often noticed in young women, according to Dr Minhaj. “It is basically an underlying desire by the patient to be accepted by society and their friends that pushes them into this weight obsessions. They can also be fall outs of depression or some traumatic incidents in their past,” explains Dr Sri Lakshmi. Some of the fallouts of these eating disorders could be n starvation n lack of nutrition n drop in blood pressure n hair loss and brittle nails n light headedness n constant stomach ache n tooth decay due to exposure to stomach acids n disruption in menstrual cycle (in females)
Treatment “Medications and counselling are the treatment options for both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. It is essential that the patient takes medication regularly. Of course family support and counselling sessions also play a huge role. Also the patient’s confidence needs to be boosted so they feel better about themselves. Monitoring their food intake and ensuring they don’t visit the washroom immediately after meals to purge what they’ve eaten is also vital. In case a disturbed family or past is the trigger for the eating disorder then setting them right is important as well,” explains Dr Minhaj.
Fast-food ads prompt kids to pile on pounds WASHINGTON: If youngsters hooked on fast food have greater chances of becoming overweight, then blame fast-food ads on TV which entice them in the first place. “We know that children and adolescents are highly exposed to fastfood restaurant advertising, particularly on television,” said Auden C McClure, assistant professor of paediatrics at the Children’s Hospital, Dartmouth, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Centre in the US. “This study links obesity in young people to familiarity with this advertising, suggesting that youth who are aware of and receptive to televised fast-food marketing may be at risk for health consequences,” added McClure. Previous research has shown that watching TV is tied with obesity. McClure and her colleagues sought to determine whether recognition of fast-food ads on TV is linked with obesity in adolescents and young adults, according to a Children’s Hospital statement. The researchers surveyed a national sample of 3,342 youths aged 15 to 23 years. Participants were asked about their height, weight, age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, exercise, consumption of soda or sweet drinks, frequency of eating at quick-service restaurants, how many hours they watched TV each day, and whether they snacked while watching TV. They also were shown 20 still images selected from TV ads for top quick-service restaurants that aired in the year before the survey. The images were digitally edited to remove the brands. Results showed that about 18 per cent of participants surveyed were overweight, and 15 per cent were obese. The percentage of youths who were obese was significantly higher among those who recognised more ads than those who recognised few ads (17 per cent vs 8.3 per cent). Even after controlling for the variables listed above, youths who recognised many ads were more than twice as likely to be obese compared with those who recognised few ads. These findings were presented n Sunday at the Paediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Boston, US. IANS

early half of the women think that the pill and condoms are more effective at preventing pregnancy than they actually are, says a new study. The study of more than 4,000 women seeking birth control found that 45 per cent overestimated the effectiveness of the
pill and condoms, reported Reuters. According to Scope, subjects of the study were asked to rate different birth control options. According to scientists, women whose partners use condoms experience a 2 per cent per-year pregnancy rate with perfect use and a 15 per cent peryear pregnancy rate with typical use.
With the pill there is about a 0.3 per cent chance of unintended pregnancy if it is used perfectly. According to the research, the most effective birth control methods are intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants, which release hormones slowly into the body to prevent pregnancy. “We need to do a better job
of educating the public — women and men — on the failure rates with typical use of contraceptives like condoms and pills,” said study author David L Eisenberg, of Washington University in St Louis School of Medicine, reported Reuters. The research was published in the journal American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. GLOBAL POST

ntibiotic tetracycline may affect sperm vitality, says a new study. Researchers found that male pseudoscorpions given the antibiotic tetracycline suffer from significantly reduced sperm health and even pass down this harmful effect to their progeny. “This is the first research to show a transgenerational effect of antibiotics,” said David Zeh, chair of the Department of Biology in the College of Science, according to Medical XPress. “Tetracycline has a significant detrimental effect on male reproductive function and sperm viability of pseudoscorpions – reducing viability by up to 25 per cent – and now we know that effect is passed on to the next generation.” The researchers from the University of Nevada, Reno, said the antibiotic reduced sperm viability up to 25 per cent. The effect may also be seen in humans, said researchers. The broad-spectrum antibiotic tetracycline has been used for six decades for, among other things, antimicrobial therapy in humans for conditions such as acne or bacterial infections. The research was published online in the journal Scientific Reports. GLOBAL POST

CHALASIA is the name for an ailment of the tube that is meant to carry the food and liquid we take in from the mouth to the stomach. This occurs when the muscles in the oesophagus stop working. This may happen due to damage to the nerves. People suffering from achalasia may suffer from problems such as difficulty in swallowing food and liquid. When this happens the oesophagus starts dilating resulting in choking and coughing when a person lies down, as the food and liquid may regurgitate. The other symptoms may include chest pain, heartburn and weighloss. The ailment is said to be rare and may effect people of any age although it is more common among people who are above the age group of 40. The treatment for achalasia may include medication, botox, injections and even surgery.

Boyapati Srinu had directed the film and KA Vallabha had produced it. An official announcement about the film’s box-office performance is expected to be made soon.

Yami S Gautam wants content oriented films
he moved from television to regional movies to Bollywood. Actress Yami Gautam, who debuted in Hindi films with the unconventional yet successful movie Vicky Donor, says movies are not about language but about content. “You can’t tag me as a regional actress. Whatever I did was considering the content over the language,” Yami said. “I started my career with television and whatever work I did was keeping the content as my top most priority. Same goes with the movies, I never grabbed any work! There were a lot of offers before Vicky Donor, but I wanted to wait for the right opportunity. Side by side I was doing ads and I’m fortunate that I worked in Vicky Donor,” she added. The 25-year-old became a known name on the small screen after working in shows like Chand Ke Paar Chalo and Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam. IANS
Rumours about Salman don’t bother me: Katrina
A
ctress Katrina Kaif, who is teaming up with Salman Khan again in Ek Tha Tiger, says she is not bothered about the gossip that goes around regarding her and the actor. Katrina reportedly dated Salman when she started off her career in Bollywood but later separated. And their new movie has got the rumour mills spinning again. She was last seen with the Dabangg star in 2008 movie Yuvraaj. “When we start working for a movie we go in as professionals. I am here to do my job and if people want to highlight baseless stories then it’s up to them. I don’t think that these stories will have any affect on my work and the film. “I am never bothered about such stories. Why should I? I think it’s what every actor goes through. When you start working in the industry, people taking about you becomes a part of your life. Why analyse it so much?” Katrina said. PTI

Obama and Kimmel go after Kim K
L

BREAKS RECORDS
oss Whedon’s The Avengers continues to wreak havoc at the foreign box office, earning $36 million in its first two days and breaking records in a number of territories. From Disney and Marvel Studios, Avengers scored the third best Thursday opening ever in the
U.K. ($4.1 million) after posting the second highest opening day of all time in Australia on Wednesday. Moreover, the superhero extravaganza is showing strength across the globe. In Argentina, the pic grossed $600,000 on Thursday, the third best opening of all time. And Avengers debuted to $2.3
million Korea, the third biggest opening of all time for non-local title. Avengers is rolling out overseas a week ahead of its May 4 domestic bow. The tentpole is expected to kickoff summer in spectacular fashion with a $150 millionplus opening in North America.
indsay Lohan may have gotten more attention than any other guest before Saturday night’s White House Correspondents Dinner, but Kim Kardashian was the starlet who took the most shots from the dias at the Washington Hilton during the annual event. Host Jimmy Kimmel, for instance, remembered last year’s dinner, which took place after President Obama had dispatched a team that would track down and kill Osama bin Laden. “Who will it be this year?” asked Kimmel to laughter from the packed ballroom. Then he offered a suggestion: “If you’re looking for the greatest threat to America right now, she’s right there,” he said, pointing into the audience.”She’s Kim Kardashian.” As the reality-TV star laughed, Kimmel scolded the president. “When you took office, the Kardashians had one reality show,” he said. “Now they have four. This is not a good trend.” The jibes aimed at Kardashian — which also included Kimmel’s suggestion that Obama had Navy Seal Team Six outside the Kardashian compound in Beverly Hills disguised as the Denver Nuggets “so they can sneak in undetected” — were among the spiciest in the comic’s 20-minute monologue, which stuck mostly to politics and tweaked the president only slightly more often than it took aim at his Republican critics. As for the guest of honour’s own remarks, President Obama was perhaps not as funny or as biting as last year, when he went
after guest Donald Trump for continually raising questions about Obama’s birth certificate. And he got perhaps his best laugh with a jibe at Sarah Palin — and at himself, and a recently dredged-up confession from his Dreams From My Father autobiography that he ate dog meat as a child in Indonesia. “What’s the difference between a soccer mom and a pit bull?” he asked. “A pit bull is delicious.” This time around, the president —who has attended the annual dinner every year that he’s been in office— used some of his sharpest lines in a pretaped opening bit, in which his voice was heard from “backstage” on a microphone that was purportedly left open. And his targets included, yes, Kim Kardashian. “Seriously, guys, what am I doing here?” said Obama’s voice to an unseen aide. “I’m the President of the United States, and I’m opening for Jimmy Kimmel? Why am I telling knockknock jokes to Kim Kardashian? What is she famous for, anyway?” The crowd was typically varied for a WHCD, with guest including Lohan, Kardashian, George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, Kevin Spacey and cast members from Glee and Modern Family, alongside a host of politicians and Washington insiders. Or, as Kimmel said, “Here is one room we have members of the media, politicians, corporate executives, advertisers, celebrities Everything that is wrong with America is here tonight.”

KAKURO
How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

For WI, there’s a silver lining Twelfth Man Babu Kalyanpur
A
ustralia continued their climb to the top with a hard-fought 2-0 victory against the West Indies. The series was already written off as one-sided in Australia’s favour as the West Indies were not making much of an impact at the top level. However, a young West Indian side, shepherded by the ever-reliable Shivnaraine Chanderpaul, gave Australia a run for their money. The wickets in the Caribbean this time round were lively and aided both pace and spin. This was very much a bowler-oriented contest. Such was the dominance of the bowlers that both teams managed just one century each in the three Tests. The batsmen rarely felt in at any given time and had to battle for every run. The series came
alive thanks to positive captaincy from both Michael Clarke and Darren Sammy, The biggest let down for the Windies was a fragile top-order which rarely fired. This put a lot a pressure on Chanderpaul who came good in every Test and was the Man of the Series without doubt. If Chanderpaul’s contribution is taken out, then the West Indies would have barely managed 150. But the veteran lefthander put a price on his wicket and plodded on to big scores and passed the 10,000 mark in Tests. Chanderpaul received some support from the improving Darren Bravo and the West Indies lower order. Sammy is nothing more than a useful cricketer whose place in the team is constantly questioned. However, Sammy silenced his critics at least temporarily with some good batting at number eight. He also did a fine holding job as a bowler, maintaining admirable line and length and choking the batsmen. The West Indian bowling played a major role in the team
fighting hard right through. Kemar Roach finally cemented his place as the leader of the pack with 19 wickets in the series. After an erratic start, he found rhythm and became menacing as the series went on. He was wellsupported by the luckless Fidel Edwards. The contribution of Shane Shillingford was also important. He took 14 wickets with his off-spin in just two Tests. The one batsman who got the century for Australia was the wicketkeeper Matthew Wade. That was a match-winning effort
as he guided a tottering Australia to 328 with the help of the tail. He always proved stubborn in his other innings and his wicketkeeping was efficient at all times. If the Australian selectors are smart, they should retain Wade as the keeper and let Brad Haddin enjoy an extended holiday. Though none of the Australian batsmen batted consistently, they made vital contributions at the right time. The biggest surprise was that the lower order batted consistently and always tided things over for the team.
Ryan Harris scored a maiden fifty while Ben Hilfenhaus, Nathan Lyon, James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc made useful scores. The Australian bowling was superb. Harris had a match-winning performance in the first Test while Hilfenhaus took early wickets in every Test. Lyon was more than useful and though he did not take many wickets, he answered his captain in tight situations. Clarke is now earning a big reputation as a captain. He is positive in everything he does and is responsible for Australia winning the series. His declaration in the second Test was bold and rain played spoil sport with the Wet Indies going for the 215 target in 61 overs. He also picked up a match-winning five-for in the third Test. Australia take a break for six months after their hectic summer while the West Indies play England away in a fortnight. The West Indies will need to maintain their fighting spirit more than ever. England in England is always a different cup of tea.

Selfless of Kumar to stay out A
ll-rounder Cameron White, who led the Deccan Chargers in their IPL game against Mumbai Indians, said it was unselfish of regular skipper Kumar Sangakkara to drop himself from the playing eleven and hand over the leadership to him. "Darren Lehmann and Kumar were discussing and decided the best team for this wicket. The team we played was what Darren and Kumar decided to go in with. It was a very selfless thing for Kumar to do, to pick that team," said White. Conceding that it was not regular of a captain to leave himself out of the 11, White said the Chargers were outplayed by the MI which bowled them out for 100 and reached the target for the loss of five wickets. hahrukh Khan is certainly a happy man what with his team, Kolkata Knight Riders getting back to their winning ways — they have not faced a single defeat in the last four matches. In their previous tie, they thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore and clinched victory by 47 runs. The Knights are now placed at the second place on the points table. They are set to face Chennai Super Kings for the first time this season on the latter's home turf. The Super Kings on the other hand have seen their fortunes sway like a see-saw — they lost their previous match to Kings XI Punjab, before this game they were to clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore but
they could not play them because of incessant rain and they won the match before that against the Royals from Rajasthan. While Faf du Plessis has been consistent with his performance for the current title holders, the other players, including Skipper Mahender Singh Dhoni, have displayed their skills only in flashes. Though the Super Kings still figure among the top four teams, yet their inconsistent performance could spell doom and betray them of retaining the title. Meanwhile, the Knights do not have too much to worry about if they manage to carry forward their present form. Gautam Gambhir, who hit a blistering 93 when KKR played RCB on Saturday, has seemed to be in fine touch while teammates Jacques Kallis, Brendon McCullum, Sunil Narine and Rajat Bhatia have been performing well.

Hijab not an obstaclein Games AMMAN: FIFA vice president for Asia Prince Ali of Jordan, who waged a campaign against a ban on the hijab, believes the traditional Islamic headscarf should not prevent Muslim women from joining the Olympics. “I think that the hijab will not hinder the participation of Muslim women in the Olympic Games,” Ali, half-brother of King Abdullah II, told AFP in an interview. “The games will be a great opportunity for Arab and Muslim women to show their capabilities and prove themselves.” FIFA, world football’s governing body, banned players from wearing the Islamic headscarf in 2007, claiming it is unsafe, but the International Football Association Board (IFAB) allowed women players last month to wear the hijab in games. “Safety is important of course, but to date, there have been no reported injuries due the headscarf on the pitch,” said the prince. “We all have a responsibility to ensure that all women who wear a headscarf are able to participate in the game they love. Football is a sport for all.” IFAB will meet in July to ratify its decision to lift the ban on
the hijab. “We held a meeting in FIFA with designers of a safe headscarf as well as independent technical testing institutes in order to discuss the new designs,” Ali said. “The decision now lies with
the medical committee which will give a recommendation to FIFA before the July meeting.” The ban has become a pressing issue in the region, with the Iranian national women’s team forced to withdraw from the West Asia Olympic qualifiers last
year and three players dropping out of the Jordanian side due to the ban. Backing Prince Ali’s efforts, the United Nations has urged FIFA to permit the hijab, saying players have “the right to wear a safe, Velcro-opening headscarf in FIFA-regulated matches and competitions.” “I always support women. Personally, I was happy that my sister (Princess Haya) competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games in show jumping,” said the son of Jordan’s late King Hussein and late Queen Alia. Saudi Arabia has once again refused to send a women’s team to the London games, but International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge has said he would keep up the pressure on the Arab kingdom. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei are the only three countries never to have sent women athletes to the Olympics, but Doha, which is hoping to stage the 2020 Games, has said it will send three to the Olymipcs in London. Unseating South Korean Chung Mong-Joo as FIFA vicepresident in January 2011, Ali became the youngest member of the body’s executive committee at the age of 35, after rallying Arab support behind him.
Sophie improves hammer record T
he hammer thrower Sophie Hitchon has broken her British record for the third time this year with a throw of 71.61 metres, reported The Guardian. The 20-year-old, who only began taking the hammer seriously in 2007 after a childhood of ballet and trampolining lessons, recorded the throw – posting the Olympic A qualifying standard mark for a second time – in the Olympic training centre in Chula Vista, Californiaa few days back. Hitchon set a British record by throwing 70.40m in Loughborough in March, beat-
ing her own mark of 69.59, and increased that distance to 70.47m at the Mount Sac relays last weekend. “I feel really good and training out here has gone really well,” said Hitchon. “It’s just really good to repeat it in competition. I love competing - I don’t want to be one of those who says, ‘I’m throwing this in training’ but can’t reproduce it in competition.” “I think the A standard takes the pressure off my mind, the last few competitions I possibly tried too hard but now I can relax and compete to the best of my abilities.”
Dwain, David get Olympics go-ahead LONDON:
British sprinter Dwain Chambers and cyclist David Millar will get the green light to take part in the London Olympics on Monday despite their doping-blighted pasts, media reports claimed on Sunday. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will reveal their decision on Monday at 1400GMT which is expected to slap down the British Olympic Association’s (BOA) bylaw that bans convicted British drugs cheats from taking part in the Games under a lifetime ban. World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has fought the BOA’s policy of imposing life bans for the Olympics arguing that it contravened their code. Both the BBC and the Daily Telegraph reported on Sunday that CAS will back WADA in Monday’s decision. Despite the impending ruling, both Chambers and Millar would still have to achieve the qualifying standards for July’s Olympics. “The British Olympic Association (BOA) can confirm that today, it has received from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) the written decision in the arbitration between the BOA and the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA),” said a British Olympic Association statement. “As the decision is to be announced first by Court of Arbitration for Sport, and out of respect for Court of Arbitration for Sport and the Arbitration Panel, the British Olympic Association will be offering no comment today.” Former European 100m champion Chambers, who won 60m bronze in this year’s world indoor event in Istanbul last month, was banned for two years after testing positive for the anabolic steroid THG in 2004. Millar also served a doping ban in 2004.

Shocker! Is Hodgson set to coach England? Julian Guyer
LONDON: Roy Hodgson was thrust into the limelight for the vacant England manager’s post when the Football Association confirmed Sunday they had made an official approach to speak to the West Bromwich Albion boss. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has long been regarded as favourite for a role left open when Fabio Capello resigned in February in protest at the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy. But in a stunning development, the FA turned to Hodgson, who has a wealth of international experience having coached the likes of Switzerland and Finland. FA chairman David Bernstein, thanking West Brom counterpart Jeremy Peace, said: “I’m grateful to Jeremy and all at West Bromwich Albion for their co-operation in allowing us to approach Roy, who I have since spoken with. “Roy is the only manager we have approached and we remain on course to make an appointment within the timescale we set-out soon after Fabio Capello’s departure. “Further conversations will now take place with Roy and my Club England colleagues before any further announcements can be made.” The 64-year-old Hodgson, whose current Albion deal ends on June 30, has, unusually for an English manager, had spells with several overseas clubs, including Italian giants Inter Milan. He took over at West Brom in 2011 after a brief and unsuccessful time in

Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo each scored 20 points for Boston, but Rondo ended the contest under a cloud as he was ejected with 41 seconds remaining when he received two quick technical fouls for his reaction to a loose ball foul call.

charge of Liverpool and the Midlands club are currently a respectable 10th place in the Premier League. “Roy has done a fantastic job over the past 15 months and the fact the FA want to discuss the England role with him is testament to that," Peace told West Brom’s website. “Roy is a proud Englishman and we can understand why he wants to speak to the FA about this highly-prestigious managerial position. “However, we have emphasised to Roy how much we would like him to remain as our head coach and continue
his major contribution to our project at the Hawthorns as we look to establish ourselves as a Premier League club. “Everyone here has an excellent working relationship with him and he is immensely popular with our supporters.” It may be the FA felt able to speak to Hodgson at this time as the Baggies’ season is effectively ‘over’, whereas they might have been accused of disrupting Tottenham, currently fourth and battling for a Champions League place, were they seen to speak to Redknapp before the end of the campaign.
Luke Donald back at the top NEW ORLEANS: England’s Luke Donald took back the World No. 1 golf ranking that he lost to Rory McIlroy two weeks ago with a third-place finish on Sunday at the US PGA Zurich Classic. top-seven finish this week to secure the top ranking once more. With a birdie on the par-5 18th to complete a final-round five-under par 67, Donald finished 72 holes on 17-under 271. In a bogey-free final round, Donald birdied the par-3 third and ninth holes on the front side and added birdies on the par-5 11th and par-4 13th before his
concluding birdie, which avoiding him sharing third with two rivals. Two weeks ago at the US PGA Heritage Classic, Donald finished in a share of 37th place when he needed to finish eighth or better to keep idle McIlroy from passing him for the top ranking. McIlroy had moved to World No. 1 for the first time in his career last month.

City, United brace for the derby of derbies Rob Woollard
MANCHESTER: The defining plot twist of the most enthralling title race in years could be written on Monday as Manchester City attempt to seize control of their Premier League destiny against leaders Manchester United. Three weeks ago, United already had one hand on a record 20th title after City’s defeat at Arsenal left Sir Alex Ferguson’s team a hefty eight points clear with only six games remaining. But a poor run of results from United, which has seen them take only four points from a possible nine, has suddenly given City the chance to put themselves back on pole position as the finish line looms into view. An estimated worldwide television audience of more than 650 million is expected to tune in for a match that is being hyped as the biggest in Premier League history. “This is the derby game of all derby games,” Ferguson said. “It’s in the blood of the supporters and I know lots of fans who would give everything to win this game,” the United manager added. City midfielder Gareth Barry also emphasised the unique nature of the top-of-thetable duel. “People are speaking of this as being the biggest game in Premier League history and it’s a massive game to play in,” Barry said. “I don’t think you can get away from the size of the game against United and the pressure.” The equation for City is sim-
Manchester United v Manchester City Overall head to head record Manchester United wins 67 Manchester City wins 44 Matches drawn 50 ple: a victory on Monday would see them return to the top of the table. Wins at Newcastle and at home to Queens Park Rangers would then guarantee City the title, provided United are unable to make up their rivals’ significant advantage in goal difference, which currently stands at plus six. City manager Roberto Mancini has attempted to douse the expectation level by stating
that United will remain favourites for the title even if they lose, citing the champions’ final two matches against Swansea and Sunderland. “I think they have more chance than us because we play the derby on Monday, after we play against Newcastle, that will be a very tough game,” Mancini said. “Instead United play Swansea and Sunderland. For them, they will be two easy games.”
Nadal reigns supreme on clay Scott Williams
BARCELONA: Rafael Nadal is back on top of his mental and physical game after completing a fortnight of history-making with the Spanish king of clay adding another line for the record books on Sunday. The world number two became the first man to win two separate events seven times, as he defeated battling compatriot David Ferrer 7-6 (7/1), 7-5 to win a seventh trophy at the Barcelona Open.
That success came seven days after he thrashed world number one Novak Djokovic for an eighth consecutive title at the Monte Carlo Masters. His Barcelona triumph marked his seventh title in eight editions, with his only loss prior to 34 straight victories coming in 2003 to current Davis Cup captain Alex Corretja. “I’ve won two extremely difficult events — Monte Carlo and Barcelona without losing a set,” said Nadal.

ontrary to popular myth, Denis Law’s backheeled goal for City against his former club did not relegate United, who would have gone down regardless of the outcome of this match. Even so, Law’s cheeky goal has become part of Manchester footballing folklore, almost as much for the Scottish striker’s muted response to scoring the winner. “I have seldom felt so depressed in my life as I did that weekend. After 19 years of giving everything I had to score goals, I had finally scored one which I almost wished I hadn’t,” Law later admitted. 23/09/89 MANCHESTER CITY 5 MANCHESTER UNITED 1 A crushing defeat at Maine Road that couldn’t have come at a worse time for Ferguson, still struggling to mould United into a force after arriving at Old Trafford from Aberdeen less than three years earlier. City took a stranglehold on the game in the opening 45 minutes, racing into a 3-0 lead with goals from David Oldfield, Trevor Morley and Ian Bishop as United were made to pay for some shambolic defending. Mark Hughes pulled one back for United with a spectacular volley but further goals from Oldfield and Andy Hinchcliffe gave City a famous victory. 21/09/09 MANCHESTER UNITED 4 MANCHESTER CITY 3 An extraordinary game that marked Carlos Tevez’s first match against United since his muchtrumpeted defection to City in the close season. Wayne Rooney shot United into the lead before Gareth Barry drew City level. Darren Fletcher put United ahead only for Craig Bellamy to restore parity with a
thunderous 25-yard effort. A further Fletcher goal in the 80th minute looked to have sealed the win for United only for Bellamy to snatch a dramatic equaliser on the stroke of full-time. Six minutes into injury time Michael Owen popped up to poach the winner for United as City’s then manager Mark Hughes raged at officials who had earlier signalled for only four minutes of time added on. 16/04/11 MANCHESTER CITY 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 0 With United still alive in three competitions, the two Manchester rivals met once more in a Wembley FA Cup semi-final. Yet United’s hopes of a second treble were shattered by Yaya Toure’s 52nd minute winner as Roberto Mancini’s side advanced to a final against Stoke which they went on to win the following month, ending City’s 35-year wait for a trophy. 23/10/11 MANCHESTER UNITED 1 MANCHESTER CITY 6 Sir Alex Ferguson described it as his “worst ever day” in football, and few would be willing to quibble with that assessment after a remarkable mauling at Old Trafford that shocked English football. Both sides headed into the game in form and unbeaten, but City took a 1-0 lead at half-time through a goal from Mario Balotelli. The dismissal of Jonny Evans left United down to 10-men and City took full advantage to go 3-0 up with further strikes from Balotelli and Sergio Aguero. As United surged forward in pursuit of a miraculous comeback, City picked them off mercilessly with Edin Dzeko scoring twice and David Silva adding another as United suffered their worst home defeat since 1955.
