or the last 30 years Lakshmi has worked from 10 in the morning to 9 at night ironing piles of clothes. She and her husband Nagraju shared the work load, until two months ago when he met with an accident and fractured his hand. Now Lakshmi is left to do all the ironing herself and does it with a quiet resolve. She irons around 100 pieces of clothing per day, charging `3 a piece. At the end of the month she makes a paltry `3,000. One can’t blame her for being bitter about life when most of her hard-earned

money goes to buy coal at `25 per kg. The couple were married young, but had children late in life. Lakshmi constantly worries about her children’s future, as her husband has diabetes and if anything happens to him or her there is no one to look after the kids. She is smart enough, however, to understand that being uneducated has been a huge disadvantage in her life and is adamant that her children acquire the basic education. Her lot, she assures us, will not be that of her children.

he chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is in New Delhi trying to seek leave of the high command to make a massive reshuffle of the Cabinet but his detractor and PCCI chief Botsa Satyanarayana and the Congress in-charge for AP Ghulam Nabi Azad want only cosmetic changes with inclusion of two members of the Chiranjeevi group. The PCC chief Botsa argues that the expansion should be before the polls so that they would know who is with whom before the elections. While Botsa suggested to the high command that those working against the party should not be spared . Kiran and his advisors, on the other hand, are for a lenient view keeping in mind the impending bypolls. The reference is to the 16 MLAs who had defied the whip. On the other hand Botsa asking for a CBI probe into the liquor syndicates has come as a bolt from the blue for the chief minster. The wine dealers are in no mood to cooperate with the excise officials and the Government. They openly declared that they will not sell at MRP. Senior congress leaders agree that all is not well between the CM and the PCC chief , but

estrictions and warnings by the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police have come as a surprise to the Hyderabadis who are generally quite carefree . The tough talks will make pubs, bars, and restaurants gloomy as hardcore party lovers seem to be heading to coastal towns, like Goa. According to the hotels, wine shops, bar, and pub associations many youngsters are going to Goa, leading to an estimated loss

they are confident that they will not rock the boat at any cost. They also want to drop some disgruntled elements from the congress, but the high command is against deletions and they want additions. One Minister who is wanted to be dropped by all is Shanker Rao, but for the High command he is in-charge for Jagans case. They want the Chief Minister to give Shanker Rao a long rope. While sources in Delhi say that the expansion could take place any time in terms of addition, sources close to chief Minister said that it could be first week of January or on Sankranthi day. But one thing is clear that there is no consensus on any issue. It could be cabinet expansion, CBI probe, dropping of Shanker Rao, ACB raids on liquor people or any other issue but there is still no consensus.

Since the hoteliers and the wine shop owners are anticipating a 10 percent dip in sales loss of business would be at least Rs 32 crore. “We don’t understand why people are making a fuss about it. It’s just that the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police’s zeal. Restrictions are in every state, but this time the police threat is making many jittery,” said Wine Shop Dealer Association President Venkateshwarlu. HYDERABAD’S BEST COLONIES PART IV

ahmed.m@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: My Home Navadweepa apartment complex is a well equipped gated community, that is just a stone’s throw from the iconic Cyber Towers in Madhapur. It has attracted a lot of attention in the recent best colony awards given away by GHMC. The colony has bagged Rs 15 lakh cash award for following several environment friendly practices. These involve declaring the entire colony a plastic free zone, sewerage treatment plant (STP), curb on unnecessary sound pollution, rain harvesting pits and clean and green surroundings. The colony’s journey began in

2006 when a 551-flat apartment complex was built over 10 acres. The apartment complex is divided into four major blocks. The colony now houses about 551 families. The colony’s welfare association was formed in 2009 with two committees — management committee and a General Body consisting of entire members of the colony.

Source of Employment The residential complex has become a source of direct and

indirect employment for about 1,200 people. The colony has a total of 544 trees and has also received ITC VoW award for its environment protecting measures. The association celebrates all major festivals. On January 26, it also celebrates annual day celebrations commemorating the formation of the association. The colony pays a whopping Rs 11.2 lakh per annum to GHMC towards property tax.

Metro moves opposed, traders want better rates METRO RAIL U Srinivas srinivas.u@postnoon.com

ne cannot imagine Hyderabad without the bustling Chikkadpally and Sultan Bazaar markets. They are the heart of the City with both markets being very popular with the common man. On any given day both the areas witness people jostling to get everything from hardware to apparels in these markets. But now store owners and vendors are an agitated lot. Recently, all the shops in the area downed their shutters in protest against the proposed Metro rail line that will run through these markets. Talking to Postnoon, K Laxman, BJP national secretary, said that the government was not giving compensation based on the present

and existing rates. He demanded that the government give alternative shops to people who are losing their property due to the metro. The shop keepers in the area demanded that the subway that is lying vacant at RTC cross roads should be converted into shops along the lines of Palika Bazaar in New Delhi. They also demanded a commercial complex in the Chikkadpally market to accommodate the displaced. Some traders want the metro

route to be changed. According to them bustling Sultan Bazaar market could soon become history. The metro route runs from RTC cross roads to Sultan Bazaar and could ease traffic congestion that is commonplace here. However, building the metro rail here means road expansions and shop owners risk losing their businesses, which is why they are opposing the project. The government has, for quite some time now, been try-

ing to convince store owners to agree to the metro rail, but in vain. Their problem is compounded by the fact that politicians across parties have been supporting the store owners in their protests and demanding for a change of route. The compensation being offered by the government is also not acceptable to the store owners. They were offered Rs 17,000 per yard according to the old rates. But the traders’ association at Chikkadpally claims that the current market rate is between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 per yard. As a result, while some of the traders are supporting the metro rail development they want a better compensation. In the meantime, notices have already been served to several shopkeepers at Badichowdi to vacate their properties as they will be demolished to make way for the metro rail.

We have ambitious plans to implement in the future. Solar lighting system is one of them. We are planning to utilise the Rs 15 lakh award towards procuring this solar lighting system.

We are happy that our association has received this award for its ecofriendly measures. The award will not only act as a token of encouragement but also help others to emulate us.

The colony has become a role model for other gated communities and colony welfare associations for its eco-friendly measures, pest control system and landscaping.

The villagers then threw down a rope,” said the officer. Some villagers then summoned enough courage to get into the well with the help of the rope and pulled Gopal and Rekha out. The police said the girl might have drowned had Gopal, who lost his hand in a mishap five years ago, not jumped into the well. IANS

9 Around the World Pakistan to review NATO report Russian N-sub Egypt: NGO offices catches fire raided in Cairo FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2011

Beyond Borders

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan

MOSCOW: A Russian nuclear submarine caught fire at a shipyard in the country’s northern city of Murmansk on Thursday, Xinhua reported. The authorities said fire safety violations during the K-84 Yekaterinburg nuclear submarine’s routine maintenance works were the most likely cause of the fire. They said there was no threat of nuclear pollution. Spokesman of the Russian Northern Fleet Rank Vadim Serga said the wooden scaffolding around the submarine first caught fire, which spread to the submarine’s light outer hull. The K-84 Yekaterinburg is one of Russia’s seven Delta-IV class submarines.

said on Thursday that it was reviewing a Pentagon report over the NATO attack on two Pakistani border posts that killed 24 soldiers. The November 26 air strikes in Mohmand region bordering Afghanistan caused a severe blow to the

gyptian soldiers and police have raided the offices of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Cairo. At least 17 USbased and local groups receiving foreign funding were targeted, according to activists and the Egyptian state media. An official said at least one of the USbased groups was operating without proper permits. The US state

department said it was very concerned and urged authorities to stop the harassment. Some civil society activists have reported that employees were prevented from leaving . “This is not appropriate in the current environment,” a state department spokeswoman said. Egypt’s military has vowed to investigate how pro-democracy and human rights organisations are being funded.

Pakistan-US relationship, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit was quoted as saying by Xinhua. The spokesman said a detailed reaction will be issued on the report after going through the full document. The foreign ministry statement comes a

day after Pakistani military termed the report biased. The US investigation report came to the conclusion that it took about 90 minutes for NATO officers to notify a senior commander about Pakistan’s calls that its outposts were under attack.

Gunners reload on Henry return rumours manager Arsene Wenger has now sanctioned negotiations over a two-month loan deal. With Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh scheduled to take part in the African Cup of Nations next month, Arsenal will be in need of extra fire-power and Henry does not have to be back in the United States until March. Certainly there appeared to be little dissent on the training ground itself about the prospect of Arsenal great Henry returning to the first team squad. “I am very happy training with Thierry,” said Per Mertesacker, the

LONDON: Arsenal fans are hoping talk of Thierry Henry rejoining the club will inspire the current side to victory over London rivals Queens Park Rangers on Saturday. The 34-year-old France international, 34, scored a record 226 goals for the Gunners from 1999 to 2007 and has been training with Arsenal as his current club, New York Red Bulls, are in their close season. Henry watched from the stands as Arsenal were held to a 11 draw at home to Wolves on Tuesday and it is thought Gunners

Giggs backs United for title Neil Johnston

MANCHESTER: Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United are well placed to win the Premier League as the title holders look to finish 2011 at the top of the table. The record 19-times champions of England will replace Manchester City at the summit if they mark manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s 70th birthday by avoiding defeat against struggling Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford on Saturday. United have been chasing City — who now lead on goal difference alone and travel to Sunderland on New Year’s Day — most of the season but will receive a huge psychological lift going into 2012 if they leapfrog their big-spending neighbours at the midway point of the campaign. And long-serving winger Giggs is confident United’s experience and ability to stay strong during the second half of the season will serve them in good stead. “Obviously City have got off to a better start, but we’re pleased with where we are in the table and especially the form at the moment,” said Giggs, a 12-times Premier League winner. “The experience that the manager, the players and the coaching staff have of what’s required in the second half of the season, as well as the overall hunger and desire to win

competitions, will help us. “Big players can’t wait for big games and towards the end of the season the games just get bigger and bigger,” added Giggs. “For me personally, you want that in the run-in — you want to be involved in big games and going for the title.” Since being eliminated from the Champions League earlier this month, United have won all their subsequent four league games — scoring 16 goals and conceding just one. They are unbeaten in their last nine topflight outings — winning eight — while two of United’s next three league games are against teams in the relegation zone. Blackburn are in serious trouble, five points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table. United defender Phil Jones, who left Rovers for United in a £16.5 million ($25.4 million) pre-season move, is hurting his former club. “I’m still a massive fan,” said 19-year-old England international Jones. “As soon as we come off the pitch I always look to see how Blackburn have got on. “I still have a lot of friends at the club. I’m sure they’ll kick on and things will improve. They’re a lot better than their league position shows. Jones missed the crushing 5-0 win over Wigan due to illness but has since returned to training.

Germany defender. “He shows his class and to have him with us is great because he shows his attitude, his experience. He still has the same attitude he showed in a lot of games at Arsenal.” Midfielder Alex Song added: “When I see him training, I am teasing him, ‘You could still play with us you know’. But he has never replied and just smiles. “What he has achieved during his football career is just amazing. He has nothing more to prove in football. A player with such stature would bring us a lot.”

THE SPORTING WORLD J2’S KYOTO, TOKYO VIE FOR EMPEROR’S CUP The final of Japan’s Emperor’s Cup on Sunday will be an all second division affair when Kyoto Sanga and FC Tokyo vie for honours and a berth in next year’s Asian Champions League. J2 champions FC Tokyo, who are set to return to the J-League’s first division next year, beat Cerezo Osaka 1-0 in their semi-final Thursday, while Kyoto crushed Yokohama F Marinos 4-2 in a nail-biting extra-time victory. No second division team has ever reached the Emperor’s Cup final, held every year on New Year’s Day at the National Stadium. The winner of the match will advance to the 2012 Asian Champions League, alongside the top three finishers from the J1 division — Kashiwa Reysol, Nagoya Grampus and Gamba Osaka.

JOHN TERRY VOWS TO SING THE BLUES FOREVER John Terry has insisted he wants to see out the whole of his career with Chelsea ahead of their Premier League clash at home to Aston Villa on Saturday. The 31-year-old has been under pressure both on and off the field this season, having taken some of the blame for Chelsea’s profligacy at the back.

Lennon stunned by Celtic revival Alistair Watson

GLASGOW: Neil Lennon has been taken aback at how quickly Celtic have turned their season around after a 1-0 Old Firm victory over Rangers saw them leapfrog their rivals at the top of the Scottish Premier League. Joe Ledley’s 52nd minute header at Parkhead on Wednesday took the Hoops to the summit of the SPL for the first time since August and they will head into the new year with a two point lead over secondplaced champions Rangers. The win was Celtic’s ninth in

a row as the Hoops gained revenge for their 4-2 defeat at the hands of their Glasgow rivals at Ibrox in September. It capped a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for Celtic, who at one stage in November trailed Rangers by 15 points, albeit they had two games in hand. Despite always having faith his side could peg Rangers back, Celtic manager Lennon was surprised at the speed with which his side had regained top spot. “They are a good team and weren’t doing themselves jus-

tice earlier in the season,” Lennon said. “They were too inconsistent but I always knew they could claw it back. “I didn’t realise they would claw it back so quickly but they always had it in them to go on a run like this. “I think it was the fallout from the second half at Ibrox, still wrangling with them and myself. I wanted a better performance from them and I certainly got that. “They didn’t play well in the first Old Firm game but they’ve certainly rectified that.

I’m not out of it yet, says Hewitt PERTH: Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt says reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated. Speaking in Perth as he prepared for the mixed teams Hopman Cup, the 30year-old said he was not ready to hang up his racquet just yet, despite a string of injury setbacks that has seen his ranking plummet. The dual Grand Slam cham-

pion heads into the new season ranked 186th in the world, a far cry from his lofty status at the top of the men’s game back in 2001. Hewitt is coming off a 2011 in which he played just 20 matches, and won only nine of those, as his injury woes of the last few years continued. His only two Grand Slam appearances were a first round exit at the Australian Open and

Cowboys look to become Giant-slayers LOS ANGELES: The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants cap the NFL regular season on Sunday with a do-or-die duel for the NFC East division title and a playoff berth. It’s one of three division titles up for grabs on the final day of the regular season, and the Cowobys say they’re more than ready for the showdown, despite quarterback Tony Romo’s painful bruised hand. “Confidence? If you don’t have any confidence, you shouldn’t be here,” said linebacker Bradie James. “We’re confident. It’s win or go home.” However, the Cowboys have lost four of their past five against the Giants. And the last time the Cowboys were in a similar situation, in 2008, they played the Eagles in Philadelphia with the last NFC wild card berth at stake NFL Philadelphia won 44-6. Tight end Jason Whitten said the Cowboys can’t worry about history now. “This is a one-game opportunity. We believe we are a good team. I don’t believe confidence is a concern. It’s just going out executing.” The Giants have plenty of confidence as well. “If we play a complete game from beginning to end, we’ll pitch a shutout. That’s our goal,” linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka said. The AFC North and AFC West division titles will also be decided Sunday, along with an AFC wild card spot. In the AFC North, Pittsburgh and Baltimore are both assured of playoff berths, but one will emerge as division champions one as a wild card. Pittsburgh face a Cleveland team already eliminated from playoff contention.

second round departure at Wimbledon, before a chronic foot injury that had been troubling him all year flared again in Australia’s Davis Cup loss to Switzerland in September and ended his season. There were concerns in recent weeks that the foot injury would force Hewitt out of the Australian Open and could end his career, but the feisty righthander dismissed both suggestions. “Retirement talk has been there since I was 26,” he said. “It’s just a load of rubbish.

Kvitova looks for psychological edge

W

imbledon champion Petra Kvitova will hope to score early psychological points at the Hopman Cup as she seeks to send Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki crashing from the women’s number one spot. Czech Republic’s Kvitova, currently ranked second but just 115 points behind the Dane, can put down an important marker when the two meet next week in singles action at the mixedteams event in Perth. Both players’ form in the season-opener will also be under scrutiny before the Australian Open.

Springboks look to revamped future David Legge

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa will have a new coach, captain, stars and possibly style in 2012 as they make a fresh start after surrendering the Rugby World Cup trophy last October. Hoping to become the first country to achieve back-to-back titles, the Springboks lost 11-9 to Australia in a quarter-final they dominated territorially only to be let down by poor finishing. A South African pundit noted that the green and gold had become so used to playing without the ball in a kick-and-chase approach, they did not know what to do with it when given bountiful possession. The Springboks have a 12-Test schedule next year, starting with three

officials say a successor to Springbok coach Peter de Villiers, whose fouryear contract expired this month, will be named on January 27 in Cape Town. Contractual obligations mean De Villiers will be considered as a coach is head hunted, but few pundits believe the Western Cape-based handler is going to get a second chance. The media list of candidates includes Ireland assistant and former Springbok flank Gert Smal plus Super 15 coaches Allister Coetzee of Western Stormers, John Mitchell of Golden Lions and John Plumtree of Coastal Sharks. Johan ‘Rassie’ Erasmus and Heyneke Meyer, directors of coaching at Stormers and Northern Bulls respectively, have also been mentioned.

Editorials MRP BUCK HAS TO stop somewhere

W

hile preparations are in full swing to toast the New Year, all’s not well with liquor business in the State. Much stink has been raised by the recent raids on major dealers and government officials and the murky nexus of politics, crime and corruption it exposed. Liquor sellers are dragging their feet on the CM’s orders to sell only at MRP, citing they need to overcharge to recover the amounts they spent to win licenses. With politicians and their benamis neck-deep in the business, the government is also reluctant to implement the CM’s directive. It’s not fair to make the consumers foot the bill for the money that changes hands under the table. Allotment of licences should be made transparent and mechanisms must be put in place to ensure consumers are not fleeced.

WHY WE LOVE Chavez

H

ugo Chavez is a very paranoid man when it comes to matters concerning the US and other capitalistic forces. However, (we are not sure if it’s deliberate or not) Chavez’s fusillade on most occasions have only amused us, maybe even the US. The Venezuelan President’s latest salvo (he had surgery in June to remove a tumor) was that the US has developed “the technology” to induce cancer. And that’s what caused his and that of many other Latin American leaders. Whether he may be remembered as a fine statesman and ruler, we are not sure, but as fine comedian… dead certain.

For the homeless, there is no New Year Urban Jetsam Dean Williams

H

omeless people are part of the urban landscape. In every city, across the globe, they lurk, the observers of a rat race so swift and apathetic that they are merely routemarkers on the long road to oblivion. But they are so much more than that. The homeless are constant reminders that life can end up in a dung heap; that no matter how hard we strive to fulfil those elusive dreams, in the end, it may all be worth diddlysquat. Those reminders hurt. They prick our bubbles — so carefully cast from the soapy waters of aspiration and delusion — in turn crushing any sympathy we may have for their cause. Their story is one documented in sepia tones of pity and anguish. Their tales are very often moribund reminders of the existence of a parallel society: One hamstrung by poverty, and forced into social chaos by the destitution of its inhabitants. Their story is often watched and never seen; their pleas heard but never heeded. It is a tale of anonymity. As Hyderabad grows, its concrete tentacles reach for the summit of an urban Utopia: that perfect blend of civil society and Bacchanalia. But in its journey outwards and upwards, it casts off those it deems unnecessary to its eventual aims. It is genocide, but will never wear an uppercase. This cull is slow, and takes place over generations. It is pulverising in its focus, and blatant in its crime, but it moves inexorably towards the future, basking in its smug prosperity. The homeless watch from the sidelines. They have ceased to dream of something better, because they have been at the cusp and seen the false idols for what they are. They know there is no pot of gold at the end of this grey rainbow; all that’s left is the haves. The have-nots failed to turn up. From New York to London, attempts have been made to scrub away the human keloids

Disappointing game

Team effort needed

The Indian cricket team has once again proven that they cannot handle real pace and bounce in pitches abroad. The less experiences Aussies proved it would be foolish to underestimate their capability. At least now BCCI should wake up and realise that training on the dead pitches can put the team at a disadvantage during tours abroad. We need to have bouncy tracks that assist pace so that the much celebrated legends don’t have to go through such embarrassments. Indian cricket board should understand that preparing dead pitches is as good as doping. Raman Vasudev Balanagar

It’s high time Indian cricket team started functioning as a collective unit and get rid of the dependence on few players to win matches. Despite having a good combination of seasoned veterans and youth in the side the team was outclassed by the Australians in every department of the game. Pattison’s performance with the bat and ball was instrumental in ensuring that the hosts never lost control despite temporary setbacks. Indian side needs to take notice and get their act together before the series ends up in a disaster like the England tour. Narasimha Prahlad Banjara Hills

that mar the landscape. All have failed. The reasons for the failure lie on the streets themselves. It lies in the way we perceive them. As Travis Bickle says in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver: “All the animals come out at night — whores, buggers, queens, fairies, dopers, junkies, sick,

venal. Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.” Travis may be a sociopath, but his fury at what the street regurgitates is not unique. In a world of ‘us and them’ the homeless don’t stand a chance. They are easy prey for the crime-ridden and the holy roller. They have no defences because we stripped them away. They have no hope because we trod on it on the way to the ATM. They have no dreams because we tore them apart. The offspring of our languor lie quietly, sleeping with eyes open staring at a sky that once twinkled with cosmic liaisons. They watch as the night is obliterated by the growing city. And long after we are ensconced in our ivory towers, they will keep their vigil. They will outlive us, because they must. In the end, the reminders must remain, long after their memories have slipped out of their corporeal prison and into the remnants of a life they once led.

Enforce MRP

T stir is anti-social

The government should strictly implement the Chief Minister’s instructions to ensure that booze is sold only at maximum retail price (MRP). It is such as sad state of affairs that bribery has been exposed deep within the system and government is yet to finalise its liquor policy. Why should I pay extra because there is something wrong the way government conducted liquor auctions or the amount paid by the licencees? The government should not forget that it is the people and not the booze barons who elected it. Nischal Krishna Gandipet

TRS and its allies are preparing for another round of agitation. What they don’t realise is that other than jobless students and employees organised through political unions no one is supporting them. The public is more concerned about going about their life and earning bread and butter without being harassed in the name of separate state demand. Why force this suffering on people? If they are really interested in KCR and Co’s cause they will voluntarily skip work and join the agitation. Don’t force your frustrations on the public; live and let live — that’s all I have to request them. Vishnuvardhan Reddy Himayatnagar

Matters of saving and spending

Bourses bid adieu to 2011 on a happy note Postnoon News & Agencies

HYDERABAD: The stock markets which bled and hit their twoyear low this month showed some signs of improvement on the last working day of the year. The country’s largest public sector bank, the State Bank of India, and the largest private sector bank, ICICI Bank, led the stocks move northwards. Telecom major Bharti too moved to green, spurring the surge. At 9.40 am, the benchmark index, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), was up 125.80 points and trading at 15,670. The BSE recovered by over 74 points in opening trade on Friday on fresh buying amid a firming trend in the Asia region following overnight gains in the US on the back of encouraging economic data. The 30-share Sensex, which has lost over 426 points in the past three sessions, recovered by

74.59 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 15,618.52 in the first five minutes of trade. In a similar fashion, the widebased National Stock Exchange Nifty index moved up by 21.25 points, or 0.46 per cent, to 4,667.60. The Indian rupee declined by 17 paise to Rs 53.24 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on

Friday on the back of increased demand for the American currency from importers and strengthening of the dollar against the euro overseas. Dealers said apart from dollar gains against the euro, increased demand for the American currency from importers mainly weighed on the rupee sentiment. In volatile trade, the rupee had lost 10 paise to close at a nearly two-week low of 53.07/08 against the dollar in Thursday’s trade amid strong dollar demand from importers. Brokers said fresh buying by funds amid a firming trend in the Asia region following overnight gains in the US in the wake of encouraging economic data mainly led to the moderate recovery in stock prices. Buying activity was focused on realty, auto and banking stocks, helping the Sensex trade in positive terrain.

Pocketful of

sunshine anyone?

Anishaa Kumar anishaa.k@postnoon.com

C

ome winter we tend to start worrying about catching a cold and dryness of the skin but have we ever pondered over whether the lack of sunlight during these times could be causing damage to our body? Vitamin D is an essential vitamin ignored by many. It is essentially a steroid hormone that helps in regulating the body levels of calcium and phosphorus, and in mineralisation of the bone. Vitamin D is said to help the body absorb calcium and phosphorous that help maintain bone density. It is also known to lower the risk of cancer, diabetes, heart dis-

ease and various other ailments.

The Sunshine Vitamin Vitamin D has been commonly referred to as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ as the sun is said to be a major source of the vitamin. With today’s fast paced jobs where people spend hours holed up inside their air conditioned cubicles a number of diseases have now emerged. According to Dr N Somasekhar Reddy, consultant orthopedic, Apollo hospital, Vitamin D deficiency has become a common issue amongst Indians who lack exposure to sunlight due to their hectic lifestyles. “This results in reduction of bone

Rock salt can help soothe swelling quality, pains, fractures and also in some cases cancer. Even housewives can be at a risk as they spend a lot of time indoors and go out only after sunset for their shopping,” he adds. Children love to play out in the sun, so one would think that vitamin D deficiency would be something that may not affect them. But the truth is far from this. Vitamin D is said to be very important for children. According to Dr Kiran Krishnamurti, a paediatrician, vitamin D deficiency in India is not a common problem especially amongst the children from the upper social strata. This is mainly due to the growth in aware-

ness among parents. “A lot of milk available today is Vitamin D fortified and parents are making sure that they bring in their children for regular check-ups,” she says. Common symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include growth failure, frequent illnesses and excessive fatigue. Children with vitamin D deficiency may also suffer from rickets. According to Dr Somasekhar, exposure to sunlight for an hour is a good way to prevent the deficiency. “It also depends on how much exposure we have as even though you may be in the sun it’s only your face, neck, hands and legs that get some exposure,” he adds. “Sun exposure need not necessarily mean standing directly under the sun,” explains Dr Kiran, “even sitting in a room where there is sunlight helps.” Various kinds of fish, cod liver oil, cold-water, butter, yogurt, cheese and egg yolks are said to contain vitamin D. Apart from these a number of products such as juices, milk and cereals are nowadays fortified with vitamin D. For children, Dr Kiran recommends milk and milk products. Apart from food and the sun, a major source of vitamin D comes in the form of supplements. For those with a vitamin deficiency various supplements are available such as powders, tablets and injections. The amount of supplements prescribed to a person usually depends on the level of their deficiency, mentions Dr Somasekhar. “Usually people who are on supplements for a vitamin deficiency are tested after a few weeks to keep the levels of vitamin D in the body controlled,” he adds. For children as well a number of supplements are given depending on their age and requirements. While it is true that vitamins are essential one must take care to avoid going overboard as too much of anything is not good for the body.

I have a 3 week old baby, who is normal otherwise, but his umbilical cord fell off 6 days back and we can see a soft fleshy swelling which is constantly moist. It also bleeds sometimes. The lady who massages my baby said that taping a coin to his navel will help. Will that help? From your description, it seems that your baby has an Umbilical Granuloma. This is a fairly common and very benign condition. All you need to do is take a big crystal of rock salt, clean with boiled and cooled water and dry it. Once dry, place it on the fleshy swelling and tape it firmly in place. You may need to do this at least once a day for a few days till the granuloma disappears. There are other alternatives (like silver nitrate or copper sulfate) in case this does not work. The coin remedy certainly does not work nor does it work for an Umbilical Hernia for which it used to be popular in the early part of the 20th century! Now stem cells help prevent hearing loss LONDON: Scientists have set out to harness stem cells to overcome hearing loss associated with age. Keele University researchers in North Staffordshire are attempting the growth of new cells in the ear that become damaged with age. Researchers found that in some cases hearing begins to decline when fibrocytes, cells in the inner ear start to degenerate. Dave Furness, from Keele University’s School of Life Sciences, has been looking into the causes of age-related hearing loss. Now, Furness and his PhD student Jacqueline Tickle have begun the next phase of research, which will explore whether replacement fibrocytes and fibrocyte stem cells can be successfully grown and implanted into the ear. If successful, it could pave the way towards the prevention of age-related hearing loss.

Challenges are aplenty for models. The constant threat of being replaced by a younger face being one of them. We find out more about the reality of the fashion world this is usually short-

eading a glamourous life isn't as easy it sounds, more so for the fashion models whose source of income depends on their looks. During the time of Arjun Rampal and Milind Soman, who were the last supermodels, competition was negligible. But no less cut-throat. The lure of the glamour world has always existed, youngsters influenced by what they see who are willing to go to any lengths to belong to this industry. But this kind of herd mentality definitely poses a challenge. One needs to start early in this field in order to secure a spot in the top few or for that matter, get noticed even. Seasoned experts however advise that it is always wise to have a back-up profession as

lived. But unfortunately not many youngsters realise that and become models tempted by the hype and fame that surrounds this profession. Rahul Dev Shetty, former model turned choreographer has been there and done that. He tells us more about his previous line of work,"Competition, getting the right break, doing the right jobs, invest it and then what?. This question mark is one of the biggest challenges that a model faces." But competition comes second only to the short shelf-life, opines model Arry Dabas. Arry was introduced to the industry by Prasad Bidapa, whom he holds in the highest light. He says, "There is lot of competition, the casting couch exists here, the compensation is less and the modelling career as

such is a short-lived one." Arry at present is looking to get into films and has already started his search for the right opportunity. While acting in films is a natural progression for many, some like to have their education in place before starting their career. The likes of Tony Lukeand Sahil Shroff are such examples, Tony in fact has a very interesting take on the whole issue. He says, "A lot of challenges exist and you probably must have heard of them all. It's like a computer virus. They keep coming and there are more where they come from." Remaining in the industry without being carried away by distractions that the profession brings, is a tough job. Not many are there whocan handle the pressures of this kind of hectic life. Staying grounded is important. Model Faith

Pandey knows it only too well, she says,"Modelling is a profession which is based largely on demeanour. And if you don’t have a firm head on your shoulders, there are chances that one might find oneself carried away by the fame and be caught up in the emptiness of vanity." Apart from taking care of one’s face, staying fit and in shape is a must for every model and it pays in the industry to have a good body. "You always have to be well-groomed and fit. Sporting new looks every season is what gets the clients’ attention and you have to deliver to knock off the monotony," says Zoheb Yousuf, a model. Coping with the stress is also another challenge in the industry, keeping up with the hectic schedule and demanding profession is not too easy.

The glamour behind the glitz

ITEM GIRLS ARE for entertainment

Any raunchy song and dance sequence is termed as an item number and the actor who does it, an item girl. However, of late, Hindi cinema is seeing a lot of these item numbers and it is surprisingly the lead actors in the film who are doing them. We find out why item girls are so popular Isha Mukoo isha.m@postnoon.com

A

plot that borders on being mushy, songs, fights and at last a happy ending: in the 40s, 50s and 60s, these would have made for a typical Bollywood movie. Over the years, there’s been an addition... without which a Bollywood movie can never be imagined — an item song. Munnis, Shielas and the most recent Chikni Chameli have become a raging hit but item numbers themselves are not a new trend. In fact, Vyjyantimala is credited for having started the trend, albeit in a more ethnic way, with songs such as Hothon pe aisi baat from Jewel thief. Then came Helen and Aruna Irani who titillated viewers with their cabaret

numbers. Item songs not only brought the spotlight on the performers, but also on the films, sometimes beating the movie in popularity.

Earlier, item songs were done by characters in

the movie that were cabaret dancers or vamps. They increased the movie’s chances at the box office and upped its entertainment quotient. The contribution of Monica O’ My darling to Caravan and Yeh, mera dil pyaar ka deewana to Don cannot be denied. While the songs became huge hits with the audience, they rarely helped the performers to shake off the item girl tag and progress to be leads. The appreciation item girls received during the film had a short life — once the song got over, the audience would focus on the leads and the plot. Only a few like Helen could give competition to the leading ladies. Director Suneel Darshan feels entertainment sells and one of the reasons why we see item numbers becoming an integral part of our movies. “It’s all about entertainment,” he said. “It’s not only item girls, even actors who play leads are pushing directors to include item songs for them to perform for the simple reason that it sells and markets the movie well. Malaika Arora Khan has hit gold with each of her item numbers — from Chhaiya Chhaiya to Munni badnaam hui. The whole idea is to become popular and grab eyeballs,” he explained adding, “It’s pure business.” Malaika Arora Khan stands out. She has never gone after mainstream roles, but is still sought-after despite only agreeing to do item numbers. Item songs are not everyone’s cup of tea. It was only recently that actresses like Bipasha Basu

21

and Katrina Kaif started doing item numbers. However, veteran choreographer Saroj Khan opines that actors who do item numbers lose their exclusivity. “I think actresses are feeling jealous of item girls and that’s why they jump at chances to do item songs,” she quips amusedly. “It’s good if an actress does an item number rarely and that too if her movie demands it. Doing that keeps her fans and audience looking out for her. Overdoing it might get her the attention, but will not charm the audience. It has become a very regular feature which is not really a good thing.” Actor Vidya Malvade feels it’s all about how you take it and represent yourself. “Dancing is a passion for me and as an actress I feel item numbers add zing to the movies and a charm to the actor performing. Despite not being an actor Malaika Arora Khan sizzles on screen with her performances because she loves what she is doing. Take Kareena Kapoor or Katrina who are top actresses and have danced to Chammak Challo, or Chikni Chameli; people love it! It’s all about a well choreographed song and your passion,” she explains. While there may be a conflict of opinions amongst the members of the film fraternity, at the end of the day it is all about the entertainment business. As Vidya Balan says in The Dirty Picture, there are only three things that sell: entertainment, entertainment and entertainment.

M

iley Cyrus, who is currently taking a break in Hawaii, took to twitter to declare how much she cares about long-term boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. The couple first met on the set of Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song in 2010, and Hemsworth is poised to become a major star in his own right after snagging a lead in the highly anticipated Hunger Games movie. Cyrus’s tweets were in response to a poll posted on the fansite MileyCyrus.bz asking who should take the crown for “Best Boyfriend Of 2011.” She wrote: The poll pits the young couple against other high-profile, crazy-in-love duos, like Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, and Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Does anyone else remember that dark time on the Internet when Miley Cyrus left twitter? We’re so glad those days are over!

GUSHES about Liam Hemsworth KATY PERRY AND RUSSELL BRAND

HAVING PROBLEMS? I

s the California Gurl on her way to becoming a single one as well? The rumor mill has been working in overdrive with speculation that things aren’t going as smoothly between Katy Perry and Russell Brand as we’ve been led to believe. Uh-oh. A source confirms to E! News that Katy and Russell have been having “problems” and that they’ve been spending “a lot of time apart,” including Christmas. Sure enough, the Teenage Dream singer was spotted swimming sans her hubby in Hawaii over the holiday weekend while Russell was reportedly in England. Our source adds that things began getting tense between the two in early December and that Katy has been “a mess” about it at times.

WILL SMITH SLAMMED BY FORMER CO-STAR

D

on’t expect Will Smith and his former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air costar Janet Hubert to exchange Christmas presents any time soon. She wouldn’t even come to the recent reunion! Hubert, who played the series’ Aunt Vivian Banks from 1990 through 1993, was noticeably absent from the cast photo released last week because of her longtime ill will toward Smith. “There will never be a reunion,” she told TMZ, “as I will never do anything with an a--hole like Will Smith.” Apparently, Hubert holds Smith responsible for her being replaced in her role by actress Daphne Reid for the final three years of the run. “This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, and he doesn’t know the word,” Hubert is quoted as saying. Smith has not commented on this latest outburst.

The glamour behind the glitz

The Telugu film industry was facing a rough patch for most part of 2011; however, there were some reasons to cheer about. Here’s our list of what and who made news this year

D E T I S I V E R 2011 Kajal Aggarwal’s tryst with controversies

K

ajal Aggarwal started the year on a positive note. Her first film of the year, Mr.Perfect turned out to be a huge hit and she made her debut as a lead actress in Bollywood in Rohit Shetty’s Singham. Although two of her films, Veera and Dhada flopped at the box office, she was in the news for all the wrong reasons. Her remarks on South Indian film industry irked several industry stalwarts and at one point of time, there was an appeal to ban her from Telugu and Tamil cinema. Within no time, she told the media that she was misquoted and requested the media not to blow the issue out of proportion. In September, she shocked everyone by posing topless for FHM magazine but the embarrassing part of the story was her feud with FHM after she claimed that the magazine had morphed the pictures.

Marriages galore

2

011 was also a year of celebration for some of the biggest stars in the industry. Allu Arjun got married to Sneha Reddy in March and then in May, Tarak got married to Lakshmi Pranathi. On the other hand, Prabhas stated that his mother is looking for a bride for him and Gopichand’s marriage has been fixed and in December, Ram Charan Tej got engaged to Upasana Kamineni in a high profile ceremony.

Strike cripples the industry

T

he Telugu film industry came to a standstill again this year due to strikes. In December, 2010 a voluntary strike was called by the Producers Council to discuss measures to control the skyrocketing budgets. No shootings were permitted at this time and it led to huge losses. Then in April, the Film Federation of Employees went on a strike demanding a hike. After a lot of negotiation, the producers council and the federation came to an agreement but the damage had already been done. Few films which were supposed to release in summer, were pushed to the second half of the year.

Mahesh Babu is back with a bang

M

ahesh Babu made a stunning comeback in 2011. He enthralled the audience in Srinu Vaitla’s Dookudu, had MNCs clamouring to get him to endorse their products and he also became the undisputed king of the overseas market for Telugu films. Considering the fact that he hasn’t had a hit for the past five years, Mahesh Babu has every reason to smile looking back at how 2011 has been. 2012 promises to be even better for this superstar who’ll be seen in films directed by Puri Jagannadh, Srikanth Addala, Sukumar, Krish and has plenty of other directors and producers vying for his dates.

Dookudu sets new records

M

ahesh Babu, Samantha starrer Dookudu rewrote several records at the box office when it released in September. Directed by Srinu Vaitla, the film packed the right mix of action, comedy and entertainment and left the audience gasping for more. Within a few weeks of the film’s release, it raked in almost $2 million at the box office in the US which took everyone by surprise. Soon, the producers declared it to be the biggest grossing Telugu film of all time and told the press that it collected Rs100 crores. However, this led to a bitter feud among fans from rival camps who questioned the authenticity of the records. Controversies aside, the film once again proved that there’s a huge market for Telugu cinema across the world.

Chiranjeevi’s big turncoat

C

hiranjeevi decided to join politics after completing 149 films and over the past few years there were speculations that he’s finally going to make a comeback on the silver screen. Although his son, Ram Charan Tej announced last year that Chiranjeevi will return to films in 2011, it still remained a distant dream. Then at the premiere of Buddah Hoga Tera Baap, he surprised everyone by stating that he might consider making a comeback if Amitabh Bachchan plays a cameo. Puri Jagannadh and RGV pitched in to say that they would direct and produce the film. However, he soon backtracked from his statement.

Hemanth Kumar hemanth.k@postnoon.com

Dubbed films captivate the audience

T

he success of KV Anand’s Rangam snowballed into a major headache for several Telugu film producers. No one would have imagined that so many dubbed films will release in 2011 outnumbering straight Telugu films. Several Tamil films like Kanchana, Naa Peru Shiva, Prema Khaidi, 1947 A Love Story, 7th Sense, Gambler, Nanna, Journey and Urumi managed to garner a lot of attention prompting small film producers to demand restrictions on dubbed films. The Film Chamber of Commerce was forced to set up a committee to suggest measures to make sure that straight Telugu films are given priority over dubbed films.

ANR, SP Balu honoured

T

wo of the doyens of Telugu film industry were honoured by the Government of India for their outstanding contribution to Arts. Akkineni Nageswara Rao was awarded the Padma Vibhushan award and SP Balasubrahmanyam was honoured with a Padma Bhushan award earlier this year. ANR, who turned 87 this year, has already been given the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1990, which is the highest award given in cinema. In 2011, he acted in Bapu’s Sri Rama Rajyam, where he played the role of Valmiki.

RGV’s talk, talk and more talk

N

o list will be complete without an honorary mention of Ram Gopal Varma. This year, he directed two films, Katha Screenplay Darsakathvam Appalraju and Dongala Mutha and co-produced another film titled Bezawada. All the three films crashed at the box office; however, Dongala Mutha did raise enough curiosity since it was shot within five days with Canon 5D cameras. But that didn’t deter the filmmaker from announcing plenty of films including Pelli, a film on the marriage system and RGVs Ramayanam, another film based on the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. We can only try to imagine what else he has in store for us in 2012 but whatever it is, he knows how to be in the news all the time.

Nayanthara bids goodbye to films

A

27

fter ruling the roost for several years, Nayanthara finally bade goodbye to films this year. She had been in the news for a long time due to her affair with choreographer turned director Prabhu Deva and she even converted to Hinduism amidst widespread speculation that they are going to get married soon. Her last film was Bapu’s Sri Rama Rajyam and she burst into tears on the sets of the film on the last day of shooting. Nayanthara’s performance received rave reviews and despite several offers after the release of the film she has maintained her stance to not act in films anymore.

The glamour behind the glitz

Allu Arjun, Vasu Varma’s film titled Lover

T-TOWN TWEETIES

@richyricha Leaving Kol n going to back home to Bombay for a few days to enjoy my New Year’s :). Finally my first kind-of break in months!

A

llu Arjun has given the go-ahead for Vasu Varma’s second directorial venture. Earlier this year, Varma and producer Dil Raju had approached Allu Arjun for a film and for a long time, there was no official confirmation about the proposal. Varma had made his debut as a director with Naga Chaitanya, Karthika starrer Josh. The film fizzled out at the box office; however, Dil Raju decided to produce another film with the same director. The film has been titled as Lover. Thaman is going to compose the music for this film which will go on floors early 2012. Currently, Allu Arjun is acting in an untitled film which is being directed by Trivikram Srinivas.

@Actor_Siddharth

Rahman

composes music for Kurtzman’s film

A

fter collaborating with Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, AR Rahman landed himself another huge project which is being backed by Steven Spielberg himself. The film, named Welcome to People, has been directed by Alex Kurtzman who was the screenwriter for several blockbusters like Transformers, Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen and Star Trek. Steven Spielberg’s Dream Works Pictures is producing the film which stars Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde and Elizabeth Banks. The film tells the story of a struggling young man who has been entrusted with the task of delivering $150,000 of his deceased father’s fortune to the sister he has never met. Spielberg had been quoted in the press few times that he was impressed with AR Rahman’s work and would like to collaborate with him.

Rachaa set to release in March R

am Charan, Tamannaah starrer Rachaa is expected to hit the screens in March, 2012. Directed by Sampath Nandi, there are rumours that Ram Charan is playing the role of a medico in the film. Ajmal Ameer, who was last seen in KV Anand’s Rangam, is playing the villain’s role in the film. There are a lot of expectations from this film since the film marks the comeback of Ram Charan after a gap of more than a year. His earlier film Orange was a major disappointment and soon after the film’s release, he decided to do more mass entertainers. The action sequences in Rachaa are touted to be the major highlight of the film and some of the scenes were shot in Goa, Bangkok and a bamboo forest near Anji, China. Mani Sharma is composing the music and the first look of the film will be unveiled in mid-January.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
