U

ttar Pradesh is a land with a history of brave and ferocious rulers. The green and prolific land of Uttar Pradesh has a big share of the fertile Indo-Gangetic plain — the most fertile land in the world. Truly it’s the very heart of India. The next few days are going be very important as UP braces itself for the 2012 elections. Being the most populous and one of the largest states in India, UP has the highest number of districts and constituencies. The election bugles are blown in Uttar Pradesh, even as various political parties are working overtime to woo the voters.

Not many know that twin cities are home to many people hailing from UP. From the time of Nizams, more than 200 to 300 families migrated to Hyderabad. The Nizam had brought many people from Uttar Pradesh and they became part of his army.

They may have become true Hyderabadis, but their roots lie in UP. People indulge in animated discussions on the political fortunes of their favourite leaders who are locking horns in the hot bed of Indian politics. The sight is

now common at many tea stalls and roadside shops in the areas where there is a large population from UP. “The roads are in a bad condition with potholes. The pavements are full of garbage. Electricity still remains a luxury confined only to the rich as power supply is available for a mere six hours a day in most parts of UP. Education is costly and employment opportunities are nil in the State,” said Narender Thakur, a government school principal. “UP is the most exploited State in terms of caste in India. UP has immense natural resources, but unfortunately development is still a dream. So an effective and honest party in this massive state will be beneficial to every Indian. But unfortunately, there is little choice. The more UP changes the more it remains the same simply because of voters’ prefer-

ence of old schools of thought and identity politics. While the vast majority of youth prefers to migrate to Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad, it is the oldies who actually vote. In other words, UP is like Afghanistan that simply refuses to change,” said Sunita Singh, a school teacher. Be it the Jat, Muslim, Dalit or Brahmin, voters are clear that the only way forward is development sans corruption. So, let’s see what happens next in the state that is considered the touchstone by politicians to rule at the Centre.

Statue desecration bandh turns violent Inkeshaf Ahmed ahmed.m@postnoon.com

HYDERABAD: The bandh call given by various Dalit organisations in protest against the desecration of BR Ambedkar statues at various places across the State turned violent on Monday morning. Some unidentified persons put on fire a bus (AP-10 W 0116) belonging to a private operator at Chilkalguda main road at around 7.30am. The police believe that students of Osmania University are behind the incident. The investigation into bus-burning incident was stalled as the police were busy supervising security arrangements for TDP president Chandrababu Naidu who visited Gandhi Medical college to extend his support to the striking junior doctors. At Nizampet village, leaders of Dalit organisations blocked the road and burned the effigy of the State government. The bandh did not have any impact on rail and bus transport services in the City. While South Central Railway is operating its all 121 MMTS services as usual, the RTC authorities too are operating its services. Speaking to Postnoon, the APSRTC Greater Hyderabad Zone executive director A Koteswara Rao said that out of the total fleet of 3,700 buses in City limits, they are operating 3,350 buses on Monday. “There is no disruption of our services due to the bandh. We are operating our services as usual. Almost 95 per cent of our buses are on roads. The bandh, however, had its impact on Barkatpura depot, he said. He also informed that some unknown miscreants burnt one bus belonging to Uppal depot at Ramantapur on Sunday evening. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Schools affected By 10am the TRS and OU JAC activists forcefully shut down

schools and colleges in the City. “We were functioning as normal but then some men came and asked us to close down and said they would damage our furniture if we would continued with classes,” said Prem B, faculty member, Daffodils Public School. “We have been asked to go home as there is a bandh,” said Nanveeth, student of Delhi Public School.OU students have planned a Black March, which is scheduled to start at 11.30am. OU has been surrounded by Rapid Action Force and students are not

being allowed to enter the City. “With this protest we want to show that the insult done to the man who scripted the Constitution, the man who believed in smaller States, the man who gave every Indian his fundamental rights is not acceptable. By calling in the RAF what is the CM trying to prove? We have made all arrangements for a rally. The government should declare a holiday or else our men are all prepared to destroy the whole city,” said Krishank Manne, OU JAC spokes person. Inputs from Sudeshana Koka

meet this evening after a gap of two months and two Praja Rajyam ministers who joined the Cabinet recently too would participate. The Cabinet met just 10 times in the last 14 months under Kiran Kumar Reddy regime, while it is supposed to have met at least 28 times. The on-going raids of AntiCorruption Bureau on officials of excise department and wine dealers’ cartel; and the desecration of Ambedkar statues, Monday’s bandh, the labour unrest in Yanam are likely to come up for discussion among other things. It is rumoured that the letter of a Congress MP to Prime Minister

POLITICS that the latter should not “endorse” programmes like “Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu”, through which the CM wanted to drum up political support from youths, triggered the cancellation of Manmohan’s visit. This turned out to be an embarrassment and is likely to be discussed at the Cabinet. Incidentally, APCC president Botsa Satyanarayana sought an appointment with the prime minister around the same time when the Cabinet would be meeting here. This raised a lot of dust within the Congress, for the APCC chief is said to be the remote target in the ACB raids on wine dealers and excise officials.

sprawling 68-acre lake has shrunken to a mere 25 acres, thanks to the real estate boom. Land sharks of all classes widened their jaws and encroached upon the land reclaiming part of the lake too. The stench of contaminants have replaced the fresh air; and mosquitoes, the occasional migratory birds. The lake was used by residents around for an occasional dip and its water for cooking in the good old days. This is the sorry state of Bon Cheruvu, better known as Hasmathpet Lake. Locals allege that 15 acres of the land around the lake has been encroached by an affluent function-hall owner and 12 acres by one of Hyderabad’s biggest realestate developers. About 15 acres has been encroached by the residents of the slum. “In 2010, according to the orders of the District Collector of Ranga Reddy, 288 houses built on the encroached land around the lake, most of which belongs to the people who live in the slums, were notified for demolition. But so far, no property has been touched. The properties of the rich and influential people have not come under the scanner of the Collector,” said Illesh Gowd, member, SOUL, an NGO. Ilesh showed Postnoon the Full Tank Level (FTL) limit which is marked by stones, which is now mired between houses and apartments. “This is a clear indication that the lake has been subjected to encroachment,” he said. The area around the lake has an interesting topography. A part of the lake lies in the slums of Hasmathpet, while the other corner has high-end apartments and planned layouts. Unfortunately, about half the water body remains under a thick carpet of hyacinth. Sewerage from Alwal municipality, Lal Bazaar, Cantonment and Kukatpally municipality, is channelised into this lake. Another disadvantage is that the water-body is used extensively during Ganesh Chaturthi, as over 500 idols are immersed here. The only saving grace is that the residents don’t throw garbage

t was not the maze of civic problems or municipal rules or civic finance that floored the young mayor Majid Hussain when he assumed mayoralty. It was the Telugu language that most people spoke that convulsed him. In his maiden face-to-face programme with citizens held on January 7, he was asked pointblank if he knew Telugu. He could understand (thank god!) but can’t talk. Obviously, he can’t write or read the lingo. Since the mayor is reported to have found the situation uncomfortable as most corporators speak their mothertongue but many in MIM spoke Urudu, he thought it ideal to have interpreters and devices as Assembly. Parliament, and many institutions have. Mayor Majid has also directed officials to appoint trilingual language interpreters of TeluguUrudu-English. The Opposition TDP and BJP, while welcoming the multilingual device, want the Mayor to learn the language rather

than depending on mechanical devices and giving excuses. Says TDP Floor Leader Singireddy Srinivas Reddy, “We welcome the move to install multlingual interpretation equipment and interpreters. It will help all corporators to understand the proceedings. But, this can’t be seen as a solution. We want the Mayor to learn Telugu as well. This will help him understand the concerns of people on his own instead of depending upon interpreters."

The TDP leader said the mayor being young could very well learn Telugu while the BJP leaders see in it an insult to the official language. Even the civil service officials from other States are to learn the language of the State they serve . “It’s irresponsible,” said the BJP floor leader Bangaru Prakash. “It hurts the sentiments of millions of Telugu speaking people. We don't have any problem with his decision for multilingual device but the fact that the official language is Greek to him is a shame.” Prakash wants to know how will the mayor understand the GHMC communications. Even the workers from outside the State come and learn the language, why not a man who was born and bred in the City plead he does not know native language?” The GHMC is the largest corporation in the state having about 7.5 million residents. Majority of them converse in Telugu interspersed with English. An overwhelming population express public grievances in Telugu only. Most people are not comfortable even with Hindi, forget Urdu, Opposition leaders point out.

can understand Telugu very well. But can’t speak it properly. I have plans to learn the language immediately, if my busy schedule allows. My priority for the time being is to ensure proper redress of basic public problems. I have a good team who helps me with understanding the language, it is no great barrier. Mohd. Majid Hussain, GHMC Mayor Actually, a Mayor should be elected only if he is proficient in local lingo. When it comes to GHMC, the knowledge of Telugu and Hindi is a must for any Mayor. Mayor's statement is grossly irresponsible given his position. He must learn the official language of the State. We will also raise this issue in upcoming General Body Meeting and insists the Mayor must learn Telugu on priority. Shaik Shareef, Congress corporator We welcome the move to install multi-language interpretation equipment and interpreters to understand

the proceedings of GB Meetings. But, this can’t be a substitute to his knowing Telugu. If he knows Telugu he can serve people better. Singireddy Srinivas Reddy, TDP Floor Leader The mayor's statement is irresponsible. He should not have said this. Telugu is the official language of the State and is widely used by millions of residents of GHMC. He must learn it as an obligation by keeping the needs of residents of the corporation. Bangaru Prakash, BJP Floor Leader I am surprised that the Mayor can’t speak Telugu. He was born and brought up here and yet he is handicapped by his lack of linguistic knowledge. I think it is irresponsible on his part to give such excuses. He must learn the language as soon as he can. D Venkat Rao, Businessman and R/O of Motinagar It is very sad to hear that the Mayor can’t speak Telugu language. As the youngest Mayor of the corporation, it is his duty to learn the language to understand the basic needs of hundreds and thousands of residents of the corporation. ll roads leading to the Hyderabad Race Club were packed on the day of the Golconda Derby. Smartly decorated horses held court on Sunday as nobody, neither the VIPs nor the common punters could take their eyes off the majestic beasts, smartly adorned with multicoloured caps and sleeves. The members and VIP guests, who attended the event, made sure they looked the part. Men in suits and ladies at their fashionable best were seen following the races keenly. Designer glasses were seen in abundance. Though there was a glaring absence of hats that are the trademarks of derbies around the world. One thing is sure — Hyderabadis take racing very seriously. Mind boggling money changed hands in the hope of luring Dame Luck. The main race of the day, Golconda Derby sponsored by Vijay Textiles was won by a favourite — Southern Bay, owned by MAM Ramaswamy. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation before every race and it reached its peak before the derby race. Punters were heard loudly cheering their horses to sprint faster. Definitely a memorable day.

Uttarakhand and Punjab polls begin ‘Can’t implement Food Bill without adequate funds’ NEW DELHI: Concerned over poor budget allocation for the farm sector, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar today said that it may be difficult to implement the proposed Food Security Bill without adequate funds to boost agri-output, a must for increased foodgrain requirement. “My grievance is only one that the total budgeted provision for entire agriculture ministry is `20,000 crore. And subsidy is `65,000 crore. It might go up to `1 lakh crore in the current year.” “Solution is that unless and until we increase production, we will not be comfortable to implement this,” Pawar told a private news channel. The Bill, which aims to provide legal right over cheap foodgrains to 63.5 per cent of the country’s population, has been referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee. When pointed out that the Food Bill was the pet project of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the minister said: “This is not a question of individual. This is a question of investment in agriculture.” The ambitious Bill, proposes to give legal entitlement to food to 75 per cent of the people in rural areas, (at least 46 per cent in the priority sections) and up to 50 per cent in urban centres will be covered under the proposed law, of which at least 28 per cent will be in the priority category. CHANDIGARH: Around 1.76 crore voters of Punjab and 57 lakh voters of Uttarakhand will exercise their franchise today in the Assembly elections to decide the fate of around 1,900 candidates in the two States in Punjab Assembly elections . The polling remained peaceful amidst tight security till the time this report was filed. In Punjab, the fate of 1078 candidates, including two chief ministerial aspirants Parkash Singh Badal and Amarinder Singh in fray for 117 Assembly seats, will be sealed today. Prominent candidates whose fate would be sealed today include the chief minister from his Lambi Assembly seat, his predecessor Amarinder Singh from Patiala City, their sons Sukhbir Singh Badal (Jalalabad) and Raninder Singh (Samana), former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal (Lehra), former Punjab top cop PS Gill (Moga), former principal secretary DS Guru (Bhadaur) and former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur (Bholath). In Uttarakhand, top State leaders, including Chief Minister BC Khanduri from Kotdwar, former CM Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank from Doiwala, Leader of Opposition Harak Singh Rawat from Rudraprayag and PCC chief Yashpal Arya from Baajpur seats will try their luck at the polls.

Election authorities in Punjab on Monday replaced 11 electronic voting machines (EVMs) in Mansa district after complaints that an unidentified person had tried to tamper with them. Workers of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the People's Party of Punjab (PPP) had complained to the Election Commission (EC), alleging that an unidentified person had tried to break the seals of the EVMs in the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) office late on Sunday. The Mansa deputy commissioner immediately ordered that the 11 EVMs be replaced. PTI

Army chief’s age issue to be settled in court NEW DELHI: The defence ministry said on Sunday that it would prefer to settle the issue of Army Chief General VK Singh’s age in Supreme Court rather than deal with it administratively. It has also reiterated in a letter dated January 23, that its July 2011 directive to the army to place Gen. Singh’s date of birth at May 10, 1950 instead of 1951 holds good. “At this stage, we will deal with the matter in court. We had in July last year issued such an instruction to the Adjutant General’s branch after the ministry had rejected the formal request to maintain 1951 as his year of birth.” said a senior defence ministry official. Govt to hear views of barred Isro scientists NEW DELHI: Government on Sunday said that it was ready to hear the points of view of four scientists, including former Isro chief Madhavan Nair, who have been barred from occupying any government posts in connection with the controversial AntrixDevas deal.“We are ready to hear their points of view. Let them give their views”, minister of state in the PMO V Narayanasamy said. Asked whether there was any move to revoke the decision, he said, “How can I say that now. Let them give their points of view first.” The government would consider their versions, he said. The government had earlier barred Nair and three other space scientists from all current and future government jobs for their alleged role in the Antrix deal. PTI

Around the World ‘Obama is our own little captain Francesco’ WASHINGTON: Top Republican official Reince Priebus sparked a political uproar on Sunday by comparing President Barack Obama to disgraced Italian ship captain Francesco Schettino. The Republican National Committee chairman told CBS the focus would soon shift to Obama. “In a few months, this is all going to be ancient history and we’re going to talk about our own little Captain Schettino, which is President Obama, who is abandoning the ship here in the United States and is more interested in campaigning than doing his job as president. I called him Captain Schettino, you know, the captain that fled the ship in Italy. That’s our own president, who is fleeing the American people and not doing his job and running around the country and campaigning.” AFP

Arab League seeks support on Syria CAIRO: Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi is fighting an uphill battle to court Russia and China to win their support at the United Nations for the latest Arab plan aimed at ending the bloodshed in Syria. Russia has made it clear that regime change in Damascus constitutes a “red line,” but Arabi said on Sunday as he left for New York that his organisation was in talks with Moscow and Beijing. He hoped the two veto-wielding countries would change their stand on a draft resolution under discussion at the UN Security Council, based on an Arab proposal for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to hand over power to his deputy. Romney ahead yet Gingrich is resilient FORT MYERS: Mitt Romney stormed towards a likely victory in Florida that would all but lock up the Republican presidential nomination, but rival Newt Gingrich promised a bitter fight all the way to the August convention. Two days before Floridians vote, polls on Sunday showed Romney pulling clear in the Sunshine State after his campaign team went on the offensive, unleashing blistering ads that painted Gingrich as unethical and not fit for office. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and millionaire venture capitalist considered the party establishment's favourite, was leading Gingrich by 15 points in Florida, 42 percent to 27 percent, according to a poll. “The reason that speaker Gingrich has been having a hard time in Florida is that people of Florida have watched the deb-

Former management should pay up for misdeeds: Mahindra Satyam Barun Jha

Don’t blame auditors alone for fraud: PwC

DAVOS: Following the effective turnaround of the fraud-hit Satyam Computer into a successful business venture, Mahindra Satyam believes that it is high time for the the former auditors, management and owners to pay up for their past misdeeds at the company. The erstwhile Satyam Computer had to suffer huge losses due to the misdeeds of its former auditors, as also the previous owners and management, Mahindra Satyam Chairman Vineet Nayyar told PTI on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting here. Mahindra Satyam was one of the strategic partners of the 5-day WEF meeting that began on January 25. Asked about the damages sought from the former auditor PwC and the previous promoter and top management, Nayyar said, “We wanted to tell them it’s high time that you pay for the misdeeds and the subsequent huge losses suffered by us. “We have suffered hugely and we want it back from them. There were lapses in the fiduciary responsibilities and those were huge gaps,” he added. Once a leading Indian IT company, Satyam Computer was hit by a multi-million dollar corporate fraud, admitted by its own founder

DAVOS: Asserting that good corporate governance is a collective responsibility, global consulting and auditing giant PwC has said auditors alone should not be blamed for corporate frauds. Two partners of PwC’s Indian member firm PriceWaterhouse have been accused of negligence in detecting the multi-million dollar accounting fraud at Satyam that was confessed by founder-chairman B Ramalinga Raju in January 2008. Ever since, auditors’ role has come under greater public scrutiny. “The corporate governance should not be confused with only the failure at auditor’s end,” PricewaterhouseCoopers India Chairman Deepak Kapoor told PTI here at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting. He said there are at least four pillars to the story of corporate and then chief B Ramalinga Raju over three years ago. After the government intervention into the case, the company was sold through an auction process to the auto-to-technology conglomerate Mahindra group, which renamed it as Mahindra

Global recession is an opportunity for India Postnoon News

HYDERABAD: The global recession has created a lot of opportunities to India. Investors in USA are apprehensive about investing in businesses there. They are sitting on a cash pile, but lack direction. It is a unique opportunity to the Indian businesses to attract these investments. However, it is extremely important to create trust and enough infrastructure for them to believe in Indian industries. The industry should also know how to position itself to attract foreign investors. The interpersonal skills and leadership skills play a key role in bringing partnerships and trust, said Kane Minkus, business guru, founder, Rockstar program. Indian businesses can build

Satyam. Besides the previous promoters and management personnel, the company’s then auditors were also charge sheeted for the fraud. Talking further about the fraud, Nayyar said that the former management had hired huge excess staff to cook up the compa-

ny’s books and to show highly inflated revenue growth. Nayyar said there were no ghost staff and people were indeed hired, although in excess. Talking about the journey since acquiring Satyam Computer, he said there have been really no major surpris-

governance. “First, there is management and the promoters, there are independent directors, then there are internal auditors and then come the outside auditors. “The management would have to first follow good corporate practices, then independent directors would have to be independent in the essence and it needs to be made sure that internal auditors do not report to the management or promoters, but to an audit committee,” he said. Kapoor said it was more about the ethics and value system that a company or a corporate group maintains. Satyam Computer Services, now Mahindra Satyam, has filed a suit in a Hyderabad court against its former Board of Directors, certain employees and the company’s audit firm PwC seeking damages for allegedly perpetrating fraud. PTI es and it has been a smooth transition process. “In the first year, we wanted to ensure that the company survives. We altered the fundamentals so that it can grow. We got rid of the excess staff, then we got rid of life- threatening concerns, which were many. PTI

The 30-share barometer, which gained 782.51 points in the past six sessions, fell by 152.94 points, or 0.88 per cent, to 17,081.04 points within minutes of the opening bell today. In a similar fashion, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty declined by 51.35 points, or 0.98 per cent, to 5,153.35 points. Editorials APPLE CAN’T MASK sweatshop stink

A

storm is gathering over the realm that computer Moghul Steve Jobs left behind over ‘sweatshops’ in China that supply parts for Apple’s popular gadgets. Internet is abuzz with calls for boycott of Apple products as the company continues to disregard questionable standards of work environment and worker rights in the race to ensure its top market position. Apple CEO tried to do some damage control by issuing a email statement that it is “attacking” its supply chain problems. However, its hardly convincing that the company, which has been outsourcing its work to China for over a decade now, has suddenly realised the shortcomings. Apple gizmos may be the face of uber-cool tech-savvy 21st Century person but all sleek shiny surface of the gadgets can’t make the haunting faces from Chinese sweatshops go away.

T

ate Taylor’s outstanding film The Help may be a dark horse in this year’s Oscar race, but it’s a thoroughbred. Stunning performances by Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer made sure that running into the big day, the film began picking up gongs, most notably from the Screen Actors Guild on Sunday night. The film, ostensibly about race in America’s Deep South, is a vast tapestry of emotion and ignorance. Bolstered by brilliant acting, it makes Clooney’s Descendants look like Terms of Endearment on downers.

Jobs well done, Apple TV is the next i-popper Money talk A Saye Sekhar

hat next? As has been talked about, Apple TV is already beaming its signals. Once Apple TV is rolled out, maybe even literally, with its numerous variants meeting the needs of all financial classes across the globe, none should be taken by surprise if history repeats. I am confident people that would make beelines in front of electronic stores to grab their piece of TV, like iPone and its successive upgrades. Hopefully, the Apple TV will be a hotcake not just in terms of its sales, but in its performance as well like its sister products from the Jobs-Wozniak stable where Steve is the common thread that binds the products. The unassailable position of Apple in its hard software and soft hardware took the company to the zenith of its popularity. For, it researches well before bringing out a product to stands and it knows more than anybody as to how to create a build-up in the run-up for such new launches and capture the attention of its TG (target group). Apple TV would surely be connected to a TV app store, creating a new wave of business models for independent software professionals. We shouldn’t be aghast to talk to someone in the TV without the help of a cell phone and also tweak the climax of a movie the way we want with the help of a few push buttons or a couple of steps on touchscreen . A staggering $46.33 billion revenue, a record $13.06 billion profit, sale of 37.04 million iPhones and 15.43 million iPads in fiscal quarter Q1 2012, the bereaved Apple is only scripting its success in letter, inspired by the spirit of the legendary Steve Jobs. The year-on-year growth in sale of iPhones is a mindboggling 128 per cent. Macs, iPads and iPods too have their share in boosting the top line and bottom line of the world’s most sophisticated mobile phone maker. Designer and author of Mobile First, Luke Wroblewski tweeted: “There are more iPhones sold per day (402K) than people born in the

This letter comes to you bearing the subject of events. I have noticed that a lot of big events fail to make it to the page. I like the newspaper Postnoon, and I really like reading the stories. But as a city-zen, it would be nice to be constantly updated with what is happening around the city. Not that there is much to see, but then I guess a lot more happens that what people are made aware of. Please increase the number of events that you list. It would be nice if you could also mention the dates of when the event is so that it becomes easier for us to plan our day. Thank you! Hyder Azam Masab Tank

I liked your article titled Husain laughs at Saffron love for Satanic. It is a reflection of how individuals — from politicians to the so-called learned exploit creative freedom of individuals — proving yet again that in a country like India, there is little scope for expression of one's beliefs. What is appealing in textbooks and speeches by 'great leaders' are meant to be heard, not imbibed, and definitely not practiced. world per day (300K). Even if the 37.04 million is divided by 98 days in the quarter that was reviewed for the financial results, the number of iPhones sold would come to more than 377.9K, much higher than the total number of births in the world. Tim Cook’s books are neither cooked nor are they crooked. The robust financial backbone of the technology giant would have been much stronger, had it priced its products at a little more affordable cost in a large consumer market like India. The iPhone which remained the favourite among high-end users accounted for 53 per cent of the company’s revenues. “We’re thrilled with our outstanding results and record-breaking sales of iPhones, iPads and Macs,” said Tim Cook. “Apple’s momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline.” “We are very happy to have generated over $17.5 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the second fiscal quar-

According to an estimate, the company was adding `82,795 or $ 1,670 every second at Apple Inc. The company’s market value was pegged at $ 400 billion — equivalent to the size of 50 TCSs in revenue terms. A leading financial daily analysed through a graphic representation that put out a startling fact that just the sales of iPhone itself outwitted the total revenues of Microsoft. The same newspaper said Apple can buy India’s most valued corporate — RIL and almost 90 per cent of public sector ONGC with half of its reserves. With the advent of Apple on the TV firmament, victory remains sour grapes for the competition. Robust numbers posted by Samsung, for now the largest TV seller in the market, only bolsters confidence that it can still remain the second best.

Djokovic has once again proved to the world that he is more than a match for Nadal’s athleticism and Federer’s class. The young Serbian ace has asserted his dominance once again at the Australian open by defeating a fire-breathing Nadal in five sets which lasted for almost six hours. He has proved that he can match brawn for brawn and brain for brain. This is just the beginning of a career that will set new milestones in the game. Be it Gotham or Melbourne, it’s the Joker who steals the thunder. I wish all the best for the career of the budding tennis great. KS Sastri Himayatnagar

I would like to congratulate Postnoon for its campaign against pollution and degradation of our city’s lakes. While the government is at fault for not enforcing the conservation laws, the people are also equally responsible for their role in encroachments and pollutions. The reporter has pointed out correctly that some of the industry leaders in real estate and hospitality sectors are major violators of law. Encroachment and pollution of such massive scale can’t happen without collusion of officials. We need more such powerful Vasundhra D campaigns from media. Kukatpally

Radiotherapy cuts risk of recurrence In the first part of our series ahead of World Cancer Day on February 4 we take a look at Retinoblastoma, a common malignant eye cancer in children.

Spot the difference Ranjani Rajendra ranjani.r@postnoon.com

Y

ou’ve happily been clicking pictures of your little one for that album chronicling his/her life and milestones. The baby’s chubby smile warms your heart and a little white glint in his eye might seem like cherubic mischief. But you might want to do a double take and probably check with the doctor if that white spot in his eye is normal. A white spot in the eye can actually spell a whole lot of trouble as it indicates Retinboblastoma — cancer of the retina. Retinoblastoma is the most common malignant eye cancer that presents in children. Its incidence is roughly 18,000 to 20,000 worldwide. While it may not be as widespread as other forms of cancer, what makes Retinoblastoma so dangerous is the fact that few parents recognise the warning signs early on. In fact, while in the West most Retinoblastoma cases are caught and treated early on, in India most doctors report that they get the cases only in an advanced case.

Causes Retinbolastoma is a genetic

mutation that usually occurs due to a family history of the same and sometimes is a sporadic occurence. It occurs when nerve cells in the retina develop genetic mutations that cause the cells to continue growing and multiplying when healthy cells would die. This accumulating mass of cells forms a tumour.

C NO EVIL Symptoms Early signs to watch out for would be a white reflex, also known as cat’s eye reflex (in this when you click pictures instead of a red eye, the retina will appear white); a squint, painful or swollen eyes or a protruding eyeball. If you are in the habit of getting your child’s eyes checked regularly it can be detected in a routine check up as well. The important thing to remember here is that if Retinoblastoma is detected early on, there are very good chances of salvaging the child’s vision. In a more advanced stage doctors will try to salvage the eye itself and if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body like the brain or lungs then the experts’ biggest challenge is to salvage the child’s life itself. Sometimes in its

locally advanced stage the tumour could present outside the eye as well.

Signs to watch out for n A white glow in the eye n A squint n Red or sore eye despite there being no infection n Change in the colour of the iris of the eye n Blurred vision n Double vision

Treatment If the tumour is caught in its early stages then it can be treated with the help of lasers and cryotherapy. If the tumour is big then it requires chemoreduction and focal therapy. In extreme cases, doctors may need to do an enucleation (remove the eye) to save the child’s life. Once treatment is completed, a child requires regular follow ups to rule out any chance of recurrence.

What is Radiotherapy? Radiotherapy is one of the modalities of treating Breast cancer. It uses high energy X rays (radiation) in small doses to destroy cancer cells that may remain in and around the breast area after surgery. Why is Radiotherapy given? Radiotherapy is recommended after any type of breast conserving surgery to reduce the risk of cancer coming back in the same breast. It may also be given to the chest area after mastectomy and to the arm pit if some lymph nodes have been removed and are affected. Radiotherapy will not usually be given to the arm pit if all the lymph nodes have been removed, but is sometimes given to the lymph nodes above the collar bone. When is Radiotherapy given? It is recommended that Radiotherapy treatment should ideally start within four weeks of surgery or chemotherapy. Treatment plans vary but generally the patient would need to go to the hospital each day, five days a week, for three to six weeks. What happens during treatment with Radiotherapy? Before starting Radiotherapy, the Radiotherapy Specialist should explain to the patient regarding the rationale of administering Radiotherapy. A planning session is done prior to the actual treatment that involves spending time lying in a simulator unit while measurements and X rays are taken. When the exact area is decided, the radiographer will mark the skin so that the same area is treated each time. These marks are not permanent. LONDON: Sceintists are developing a nano-sized drug particle for organ transplant patients to eliminate its harmful side-effects, reveals a study. The drug cyclosporine (CsA) is widely used in transplant operations and helps prevent the patient’s body rejecting the organ, but it can also cause adverse reactions, especially damaging kidneys and liver. The gap between a safe, effective and a toxic dose is extremely narrow, but the University of Strathclyde scientists have found a way of capturing CsA in very small amounts, the Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology reported. The new system enables nanoparticles of the drug to be delivered orally so that the strength of the dose can be maintained, but at a level and in a form which spares kidneys from damage,

said a university statement. “CsA is very useful in transplants and treating conditions such as arthritis, lupus and some

forms of diabetes, but we need to address the risks it can present to the kidney and liver,” said Ravi Kumar, professor at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, who led the research. Kumar did his PhD in drug delivery from IIT Roorkee, India in 2000, and was a postdoctoral fellow in University of Kentucky, US, from 20002002. “The damage it can

cause can be dealt with if it’s caught at an early stage but can be irreversible if unchecked. By entrapping CsA in nanoparticles, we aimed to match the maximum concentration of the most potent formulation of the drug in market,” Kumar said. “In tests, we were able to strike a balance between strength, efficacy and safety and were able to make a marked increase in the drug’s bioavailability - the level of the drug which becomes active in the system,” said Kumar. “We were also able to reduce the toxic effects on the kidneys by slow release of the nanoparticles, which brought the drug gradually to its maximum concentration,” Kumar said. “As well as its use in transplants, we hope to look into the effectiveness of this system with arthritis and address the debilitating condition for many people,” concluded Kumar. Dr Vijay Kumar Consultant pulmonologist and Sleep Specialist, Yashoda Hospital

Take a deep breath, sleep better

Postnoon News

H

ave you ever slept a good eight hours and yet woken up feeling sluggish? Or much to your embarrassment have had people tell you that you’re a loud snorer? Don’t just dismiss it as a one of thing. You could be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition in which airflow decreases or pauses for short intervals when you are asleep. “This primarily happens because the airway constricts when a person lies down and if the person is obese then constriction is even more,” says Dr Vijay Kumar Chennamchetty, consultant pulmonologist and sleep specialist at Yashoda Hospital. “There are primarily two stages of sleep — non-rapid eye movement (NREM), the lighter plane of sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) the deeper plane of sleep. In REM the airway constricts further and if breathing halts for more than 10 seconds then it is classified as apnea. Before that when the breathing is shallow it is hypopnea. Using the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) we measure the severity of OSA,” he explains. Common risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, heart ailment and obesity. Symptoms could be daytime sleepiness, irritability due to lack of quality sleep, poor memory or a recurrent dream of someone strangling you and loss of libido. The condition is diagnosed by PSG (Polysomnogram) aka Sleep Study. Treatment usually consists of weight reduction if the patient is obese. “Patients are also advised to avoid alcohol, smoking and sleeping pills. When it comes to nasal strips there is no scientific data to prove its efficacy. While there are surgical correction options chances of recurrence is high. A machine called the CPAP acts as a pneumatic splint and helps clear the airway. Sleeping on the side can help too,” says Dr Vijaykumar, adding, “It is important to treat OSA because it can be a precursor to coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertensions and strokes apart from affecting the quality of life.” (You can contact the doctor on 9701297721 & 9160408656)

STUDENT SPEAK Coolest thing about college The coolest thing about our college is the freedom we get; we have a sprawling 50-acre campus surrounded with lush green gardens, which provides the most conducive environment for us to learn. Apart from that, our lecturers are very approachable and give enough opportunities for us to experiment and learn. The fests and even placements for that matter are organised by us. We have a lot of students from all over the country; many foreign students also study here. So ours is a college with a lot of diversity, which you can’t find elsewhere.

15

Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology, a college known for its ground-breaking fests is back with another spectacular one, Headstart 2012. Maryam Sultana takes you around the campus

Fashion trends in college We do not have a dress code. So we are privileged in comparison to other colleges when it comes to experimenting with different trends. You can find a colourful palette of style here. The boys these days are sporting jackets and low-waist jeans. And girls are experimenting with leggings, jeggings, skirts and pencil jeans. You can find students carrying huge jholas and wearing chunky accessories. We don’t miss the chance of wearing dhotis and saris during our cultural fests.

Coolest hangout Inside the campus, the canteen and the parking lot are the places we usually hangout at and outside the campus you’ll find most of the CBITians at Treasure Island, Golconda Resort and near the Gandipet lake.

Music playing on your iPod We listen to a lot of House, Trance and Rock. We, at CBIT, are huge fans of Tiesto, the world famous DJ. Currently we’re listening to David Guetta and Akon.

Any change you want in the college We would like to change the closed-gate system, which has been set up recently. Otherwise, we feel our college is the best; as our local slogan goes ‘Coco-cola, Pepsi, CBIT sexy!’

Fun education guaranteed at this college fest I f you’re a technology freak and are raring to go to an interesting event that tickles that grey matter in your head, then you better head to Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology, which is organising a Tech Fest, Headstart ‘12, on February 17 and 18. Headstart, the largest science and technology fest organised by CBIT students is known for its innovativeness and lucrative

cash prizes. The fest was initiated by the students of CSE department of CBIT in 2003 with the mission to find inventive solutions to the challenges posed by the IT world. Lecturer Speaks • How has your journey been as a lecturer in CBIT? I started teaching in 1994 and since then have enjoyed each and every moment as a teacher. I love my job to such an extent that I quit my permanent commissioning in the Indian Air Force as a technical officer to teach.

• Is this short-term preparation really helpful in the long run? Definitely not. If the students have to excel in a subject they’ll have to put in their 100 per cent. They have to understand the concepts perfectly. Especially in a field like engineering, there are no shortcuts to success.

• Any change in the students since 1994? Yes, there has been a tremendous amount of change. When it comes to sincerity and commitment, students I taught initially were better. Even now my students are very smart; they generally get serious just before exams and it is surprising how they score great marks in a week’s preparation. If they show the same kind of sincerity throughout the year, I’m sure they’ll do wonders!

• Are teaching standards deteriorating in engineering colleges? Sadly they are. There is lack of commitment in the teachers. Not just in engineering but in all fields and at all levels from kindergarten to the doctorate level. My gurus were much better than I am right now. It’s the system I say; teaching as a profession is not able to attract the best these days. • How do you deal with the shortcomings of your students?

lecturers have supported us tremendously throughout the process. This is the biggest technological fest of our college and from the past few years we’ve made it an unforgettable experience for all participants. We have cultural performances also; so there is a lot of masti guaranteed along with brain-storming discussions and pulse raising competitions,” said Anudeep, student co-ordinator of Headstart ‘12.

Sponsored by Infosys and HCL, this fest has an amazing range of events like... n

n n n n n n n n

Prachuran — paper presentations discussing interesting phenomena that occur around us like Anroid, Image Processing, etc. Software exhibits expressing projects done by the next generations Technical quiz Cstar — a fully technical online quiz based on C language Lan gaming Photography on the theme ‘creative technology’ Coding and Debugging — a classic event for those who love coding ‘Sportz’ like cricket and basketball Extempore: Apart from this, many more interesting competitions are awaiting techno maniacs of the country. KODECRYPT, a national-level collegiate programming competition, will be the highlight of the fest wherein `15,000 and `10,000 will be awarded to the first and second prize winners respectively.

Dr CRK Reddy: HOD Computer Science Department

I make them realise their folly and show them ways to improve themselves. I don’t believe in punishments. Who are we to punish? Students are like clay; they mould the way we want them to. I feel students should be counselled and guided in such a way that they contribute to the betterment of the world. • These days, girls are beating boys when it comes to competitive exams in engineering. What’s your view on that? Girls are definitely performing better than boys these days, simply because they are more serious than the boys. Our society is still male dominated, which spurs girls to perform better, and they are definitely making a mark for themselves in every sphere. But I think even the boys should pull up their socks now. Boys are better than

girls when it comes to general IQ; just that they are not as serious as girls, in general. • Your advice to engineering students. The four years of student life will never come back. Students should start loving their subject. Only if they learn to enjoy their work will they excel in it. Even if it is a single subject, they should put in their 100 per cent in it.

Yves Saint Laurent's legacy as a fashion prodigy keeps growing as he created a brand masterpiece

ves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent left home at the age of 17 to work for the French designer Christian Dior. After winning first prize in the International Wool Secretariat contest for his cocktail dress design in 1954, YSL was offered a job as a Haute Couture designer when Dior died in 1957. YSL found himself at age 21 (possibly the youngest designer in the world), the Chief designer of the House of Dior. In January 1958, he launched his first collection for the company, the Ligne Trapeze, which won him a Neiman Marcus Oscar. YSL after his release from Dior set up his own Haute Couture House on December 4, 1961, along with his partner Pierre Berge. YSL was the first designer to have garnered the gender revolution. Many of his signature designs for women were borrowed from a guy's wardrobe such as smart pant suits, safari jackets and tuxedos. He gave all these looks a feminine flair by teaming them up with tie-neck blouses and sleek skirts. He established his unforgettable presence in the fashion world through the legendary smoking

jacket, or Le Smoking, which set the scene for the iconic, sexy clothing that defined the Yves Saint Laurent design sensibility. After gaining prominence for design, Saint Laurent ventured into diversifying the brand's activities by launching his first women's fragrance Y in January of 1964. His 1971 radical 40s collection shocked critics, as did the advertising campaign for the first YSL men’s fragrance, Pour Homme, which featured Yves himself posing nude. In 1983, Saint Laurent became the first living fashion designer to be honoured by the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a solo exhibition. Even today the iconic French label retains its streamlined chic and untouchable glamour by pushing boundaries without compromising on style. For its Spring/Summer 2012, the Parisian label's womenswear collection, features designs that embody the spirit of this season's ladylike trend. With an expert's fit of shift dresses to flawlessly cut trench coats, Saint Laurent's fusion of prints and textures add a contemporary touch to timeless wardrobe staples. It was the year 2008, when Monsieur Yves Saint Laurent passed away after a long period of ill health at his home in Paris.

MANDIRA VIRK What I love about YSL is the elegance and sheer creativity that went into his designs. He had a vision for his clothes that no one could match. A brilliant artist who raised the bar for us fashion designers.

The story behind the news

With great power comes great responsibility. And also great danger. Even the most beloved of people earn themselves deadly enemies. Today, on the 46th death anniversary of Gandhi, we take a look at some of the most tragic assassinations across the world

19

Abraham Lincoln

L

incoln was the first of the four presidents of the United States to be assassinated. During his tenure from 1861 till 1865, Lincoln fought against discrimination in support of AfricanAmericans. On April 14 1865, Lincoln was in a theatre when John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate spy who was enraged by Lincoln's work, shot him in the head. Initially, Booth escaped but was caught and executed 12 days later. Lincoln was aged 56 at the time of his death.

Padmini C padmini.c@postnoon.com

THE PRICE OF FAME Archduke Ferdinand

I

f it didn't happen, it would have been hard to believe that one man's assassination could have triggered off one of the deadliest wars in history — the World War I. But so it happened. It is said that the Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip failed the first time to kill Archduke Francis Ferdinand when his cohorts threw a hand grenade at his motorcade. So later in the day when the Archduke went to visit the hospital housing the grenade victims, Princip got him. The murder of Ferdinand (and his wife) in 1914 led to the subsequent battle between Austria and Serbia, which incited World War I.

John Lennon

N

ever perhaps was the death of a musician more mourned than that of John Lennon. His assassination made headlines all over the world. Lennon was known both as a founding member of The Beatles as well as a peace activist. On December 8, 1980, the 40-year-old was shot several times as he entered his luxury apartment building in New York. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Meanwhile Mark David Chapman, the assassin dropped his weapon and sat on the street, waiting to be arrested. He was tried for murder, convicted and remains in prison to this day. His motivation for the murder is unclear.

Martin Luther King

S

ay American Civil Rights Movement and the man whose name will come to mind is Martin Luther King. As an American of African descent, he fought to abolish racial discrimination and apartheid. On April 4 1968, King was fatally shot while standing in the balcony of his second-floor motel room. The assassination enraged people across the US where riots erupted in over 60 cities. Not much later, an escaped convict James Earl Ray was captured in London, and was extradited to Tennessee where he faced the charge of murder against King. Ray confessed to the murder and went on to state that he was opposed to the AfricanAmerican Civil Rights Movement.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy

T

he 35th president of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy is considered one of the most loved presidents till date. On Friday, November 22, 1963, Kennedy was travelling with his wife Jacqueline through Dallas in his open-top limousine when he was fatally shot. Kennedy died soon after in hospital. The Warren commission held that Lee Harvey Oswald who acted alone was responsible for the assassination. Oswald pleaded innocence until the day he died. So despite the number of witnesses to the tragedy, it is till today believed by a majority of Americans to be a cover up. Even numerous investigations later, the death is still shrouded in mystery.

There are two kinds of comedians in Hindi cinema. The professional comedians such as Mehmood, Johnny Walker and Jagadeep who added spice and comic value to the movies. The other were serious actors like Utpal Dutt and Amol Palekar and Sanjeev Kumar who acted in full-length comedy movies such as Khoobsoorat, Choti Si Baat and Golmaal among others. The second era of comedy movies started with Priyadarshan and Neeraj Vora combination that brought movies like Hungama, Hulchul and the lot and created a genre by itself that was purely comedy, songs, dance and of course star value.

policeman's role in Bollywood earlier meant playing second fiddle, but not any more. With Dabangg and Singham, the doors have opened up for cop-centric films with audiences lapping up the brawny, brash and over-the-top characters. The year 2011 saw Ajay Devgn and John Abraham donning the khaki uniform in Singham and Force respectively and creating a stir at the box-office. The trend seems to be continuing this year with cop-centric movies like Talaash, Maximum, Zila Ghaziabad and Shootout at Wadala lined up for release. This is in contrast to earlier films, when a police officer found place mostly as supporting cast. But with the new trend, many leading actors are readily donning the role. One of the most keenly awaited films, Talaash will see perfectionist actor Aamir Khan returning in the role of a police officer, 11 years after his hit Sarfarosh. After playing a police officer in Bbuddah Hoga Teraa Baap, Sonu Sood will be seen in the lead role as a cop in Maximum, which stars Naseeruddin Shah as a cop too. Anil Kapoor is set to wear the police uniform for Ekta Kapoor's Shootout At Wadala. The film is based on the 1982 incident in which gangster Manya Surve was shot dead in Mumbai. Anil portrays the role of inspector Isaque Bagwan and would be accompanied by Ronit Roy as Raja Tambat. Filmmaker Priyadarsan's upcoming film Tezz has

Sanjay Dutt is also in line for the cop's role as Thakur Pritam Singh in Zila Ghaziabad. If all goes well, superstar Shah Rukh Khan might sign the Hindi remake of Gautham Menon's Tamil film Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, in which he would play a cop.

The changing scripts are also responsible for the positive trend. Hriday Shetty's recent release Chaalis Chauraasi narrated a tale of four policemen, played by Naseer, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni and Ravi Kishan. Another recent movie, Kya Yahi Sach Hai, directed by IPS officer YP Singh, attempted to expose the level of corruption in the police force.

No godfather, only talent works: TV actor Pawan

H

is characterisation of a lawyer in popular TV show Siddhant won him a lot of accolade and now television actor Pawan Shankar will be seen in Ekta Kapoor's Kya Hua Tera Vaada opposite Mona Singh. Pawan says one doesn't need a godfather to carve a niche as only talent works in the television industry. "People should understand that one doesn't need any godfather to be successful in the industry. If you are suited for a particular role, you would definitely be approached. People today are investing big time in creating good stories and they are looking for people who can do justice a role," Pawan told. The 37-year-old hails

from a political family in Allahabad. But after completing his MBA, he chose to work in Delhi as a marketing executive. Pawan admits it is tough to sustain in the small screen industry as there is no stability. "Television is tough as you don't have stability. Right now, you may be at the top and then, the very next day you may be back to ground level. I would advise all newcomers... don't come to the industry with the idea of just earning money or earning fame, you have to be passionate towards work," he said. "And if you have the talent and passion, you will definitely succeed. Good work would keep coming to you and money will follow," he added.

Pawan has been very selective in his roles. After foraying into television as a lawyer in popular TV show Siddhant, he later did Vicky Ki Taxi. After two and a half years, he is returning to the tube with Ekta Kapoor's Kya Hua Tera Vaada. "It took me long to come back because I was not able to relate to the kind of shows that were being made at the time, so there was no point of doing them. I had started off with a show that became popular, after that I was not satisfied with the kind of roles that I was getting," he said. "Like Ekta had set a trend with saasbahu sagas, she is again setting the trend with realistic shows and if the product is good, then why not be a part of it.” IANS

And it appears to have worked. The wilderness tale found solid reviews and $6.5 million on Friday. The Grey should gross between $17–18 mil-

At least so says one of her good pals. “I just saw her and she’s doing great,” director Patty Jenkins just told me at the Directors Guild Awards in Hollywood. “I think she’s doing much better than it’s made out to be.” Jenkins continued, “Demi is awesome and so strong. I also hate when people make it a big-

She’s great.” Moore and Jenkins are nominated along with Jennifer Aniston, Penelope Spheeris and Alicia Keys for their Lifetime movie Five, an anthology film of women coping with breast cancer. “Demi blew me away,” Jenkins said. “She has the chops to be a real director... I said to her, ‘You’re a director, my friend.’”

The Lionsgate release offered discounted tickets through Groupon and Living Social, but its unclear how much that affected the film’s grosses. Money could end up with $12–13 million in the threeday collection.

Katy Perry steps out in Las Vegas

B

ack in the United States to see friends and support a charity, Katy Perry strolled down a red carpet for the first time since her split with Russell Brand. The singer rocked her blue hair and donned a cocktail dress with metal studs at the overnight Friday event for Givelove.org, which provides sustainable lowincome solutions to Haiti earthquake victims. Markus Molinari, a designer for J Molinari Jewelry, told People that Perry was doing “amazing” and she was in town to support his cause because “that’s what friends do.”

At the event at the 1 Oak club in the Mirage Hotel, Perry hung out in a VIP booth and watched her pal Ferras perform. “She was really tame,” a source said. “She was really just drinking a few drinks and chilling with her friends.” Earlier, Perry went to Stack restaurant, joining a table of 18 and dining on steak, seafood and red wine and listening to another performance by Ferras on the piano. Perry was seen clapping, cheering and swinging a napkin in the air. The singer is back from doing shows in the Philippines and Indonesia.

yan Gosling has shed light on his role in Bangkok-set boxing flick Only God Forgives in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter. The film sees him reunited with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. At the Hua Hin International Film Festival, Gosling called Bangkok, “Incredible… Ever since I came here I’ve been dreaming about making a film in Bangkok.” He also spoke about his training routine in preparation for the Muay Thai boxing scenes in the film, “It’s sparring basically. They don’t really use weights. Nicolas is doing it as well.” Gosling also commented on two recent snubs he’s been at the centre of: the 2012 Oscar nominations and People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive poll. Only God Forgives is expected to open later this year.

Celine Dion accidentally flashes to Jamaica crowd

T

aking chances with her wardrobe proved not to be the best bet for Celine Dion. The superstar singer gave fans a little more than they bargained for when she took the stage in a short dress… and accidentally flashed them during her performance at the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in Jamaica on Friday night, E! News has learned exclusively. “The short gold dress was Balmain... was that short enough?” Dion said with a laugh when ‘The Trend’, a fashion series on Zappos Couture, asked Celine about her fashion choices. “Because normally when people are level the length is fine. But people were like this (looks up).... So it was like I didn’t think of the people downstairs and me there,” the 43-year-old singer continued. Dion, who gave birth to twins Eddy and Nelson 14 months ago, later changed into a more conservative getup of shiny silver leggings, a white blazer and a white and silver top, according to the Daily Mail. The festival was held with the support of the Jamaica Tourist Board.

KAKURO

How to Play Kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

BRADY’S BUNCH KEEPS CLOSE EYE ON HISTORY Jim Slater

INDIANAPOLIS: While Tom Brady (below) is chasing Super Bowl history next Sunday, the New York Giants are going to be chasing him all over the gridiron. How well the New England Patriots star quarterback eludes the pursuers and throws to his receivers will likely play a major role in whether or not Brady can match an all-time record with his fourth Super Bowl victory. Brady will equal the Super Bowl quarterback record five starts of former Denver star John Elway. But can he equal the record of four victories of boyhood idol Joe Montana of San Francisco and Pittsburgh legend Terry Bradshaw?

“I haven’t given much thought to any records. This game is more about the challenge the Giants give us,” Brady said. “It all comes down to preparation and going out there with confidence. We’ve had a couple of good days of practice trying to understand the Giants’ defense. We’ve got to work hard on that this week.” The Patriots will face the Giants in Super Bowl 46 in a domed stadium at chilly Indianapolis, a rematch of the 2008 championship spectacle in which New York edged New England to deny the Patriots an unbeaten title run. “I remember we lost and that still burns some of

us,” Patriots blocker Logan Mankins said. “We can learn a lot from that.” New England won the Super Bowl in 2002, 2004 and 2005, all under Brady’s direction, just as the 2008 loss was, thanks in part to a Giants defensive unit that kept Brady under pressure throughout the game. “It has been a strength of their team for as long as I can remember,” Brady said. “They really go after the passer. “Any time you can limit the quarterback the time it takes to make accurate reads and accurate throws, it’s much more challenging.” Brady threw for a personal-best 5,235 yards and 39 touchdowns this season, making the Patriots the top yardage gainers in American football by quickly analyzing and picking apart defensive schemes. New York will counter with pass rushers Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, whose job will be to make certain Brady does not have enough time to find his receivers. “Justin Tuck is as good as they come. Osi week in and week out can ruin a game for an offense,” Brady said. “You understand you can’t hold the ball all day. Certainly I’m not going to be able to outrun them. “I’ve got to find somebody quickly and get the ball to somebody who can do something with it. You’re not going to have a lot of time back there.” Mankins, whose task as a guard will be to protect Brady from the pass rush, accepts the challenge he faces. “They have the personnel to really get after you,” Mankins said. “It’s their speed and they know how to rush the passer. They are good with their moves and they are very athletic. They can do a lot of different things.” Brady tries to educate his younger teammates not to take Super Bowls for granted even as he prepares for a fifth. “They are all pretty special,” Brady said. “We’re very fortunate to be here. We have overcome quite a few adversities to get here. You try to communicate with all the young players how special it is because you never know if you are ever going to be back.”

Woods comes third, but future is bright

Allan Kelly

ABU DHABI: Tiger Woods was heading home to Florida late Sunday with a mixed report card from his first foray into the 2012 golf season at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. A share of third place in a tournament that boasted the top four players in the world and six out of the top 10 was, on the face of it, an encouraging performance. But eyebrows were still raised by his inability to finish the job off when he was tied for a share of the lead going into the final round with 34-year-old Robert Rock, an Englishman ranked 117th in the world, whose sole tournament win in nine years came at last year’s Italian Open. Woods, bidding to rebound after a year mired in injuries and personal scandal involving his married life, was upbeat. “I’m pleased at the progress I’ve made so far,” he said of his work with new coach Sean Foley who has been helping him refashion his swing to accomodate the leg injuries that sidelined him for most of last year. “Basically since Australia (in November), my stroke-play events have been pretty good. “So I just need to keep building, keep getting more consistent and today was a day when I putted beautifully. Just didn’t give myself enough looks.” The 36-year-old American has been characteristically cir-

cumspect during his seasonopening week in the Gulf, with his private life strictly out of bounds and his targets for the year left deliberately vague. But he has looked healthy and determined to continue his march back up the golfing ladder. Having fallen outside the world top 50 due to his time on the injury sidelines, Woods had already moved up to 25th in the world rankings coming into Abu Dhabi and his performance here will nudge him back into the top 20. Next up is his US season starter at Pebble Beach next month followed by the WGC Matchplay Championship in Arizona and the WGC Championship tournament at Doral in March. That will lead him into what is his main priority — The Masters at Augusta National — in early April where he will be aiming to win a 15th major title, just three shy of matching Jack Nicklaus. Most observers here agreed that Woods’ ball-striking is as sharp as it has been for some time, although his putting still seems less assured than it was in his glory days. Both Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald said they had been impressed after playing with Woods in the first two rounds and Rock, a former golf pro who prides himself on his knowledge of the golf swing, said he too had liked what he had seen. “He’s definitely playing better,” he said.

Marsh out as Oz gear up for ODIs

Djokovic in line for first Grand Slam in 43 years Talek Harris

MELBOURNE: Rod Laver was the last man to complete the grand slam back in 1969 and after Novak Djokovic’s (above) astonishing win in the Australian Open final it looks like the Serb could be next. Laver was watching at Melbourne Park as Djokovic claimed his fourth grand slam title in 12 months. And if his blistering run of form continues and he wins the French Open in June he will hold all four major titles at once. The true grand slam — winning all four trophies in a single calendar year — will also need him to retain his Wimbledon and US Open titles. Many would bet on Djokovic succeeding where both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have failed, after the once delicate world number one survived a record 5hr 53min slugfest with the snarling Spaniard. “You’re in pain, you’re suffering, you know that you’re trying to activate your legs, you’re trying to push yourself another point, just one more point, one

more game,” he said afterwards. “You’re going through so much suffering your toes are bleeding. Everything is just outrageous, you know, but you’re still enjoying that pain.” Important victories seem to spur Djokovic to greater heights. After winning the 2010 Davis Cup with Serbia, he compiled a 43-match winning streak which was only halted by Federer after six months in the French Open semi-finals. Last year he collected the Australian Open, Wimbledon

I’m very proud just to be part of this history, part of the elite of the players that have won this tournament several times Novak Djokovic, Australian Open champion

and US Open trophies among 10 titles, and went 70-6 despite struggling with injury from September onwards. Now Djokovic is targeting the French Open, the only major to elude him, which would make him a strong bet to complete the elusive grand slam. “I’m prioritizing grand slams this year, as every year, and Olympic Games. I think that’s one of my highest goals,” he said. “So I want to do well and I want to get to my first final at least in Paris. I have never been in the final there, and I have a feeling that I’m ready this year to achieve that.” Sunday’s final, which stretched into the early hours of Monday, proved Djokovic has the capacity to tough it out, something which had seemed in doubt earlier in his career when he was known for pulling out of big matches. And from regular beatings at the hands of Federer and Nadal, the Serb is now the man handing out the punishment. “I was in that position a couple years ago, you know, losing most of the semi-finals and

finals against him (Nadal) and Roger in grand slams so I know how it feels,” he said. “I really thought what I said sincerely on the court, is that unfortunately there had to only be one winner because we both gave it all. We both put 100 percent of our abilities on the court and played to the last moment. “Unfortunately there couldn’t be two winners, but he definitely deserved to be a winner as well tonight. You know, I would be saying same thing if I’m sitting here as a loser.” And for Djokovic, winning his third Australian Open title in front of Laver, who was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first of his two grand slams, gave the occasion added significance. “I’m very proud just to be part of this history, part of the elite of the players that have won this tournament for several times,” he said. “I was very flattered to be playing in front of Rod Laver, in front of the all-time greats, and in front of 15,000 people that stayed until 1:30 am. “It’s incredible, really.”

SYDNEY: Struggling opener Shaun Marsh (below) was Monday left out of Australia’s one-day squad to face India and Sri Lanka, while wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been rested in favour of Matthew Wade. Australia go into the trinations series buoyed by a 4-0 Test whitewash of India, and with players such as newcomer Peter Forrest showing strong form in the domestic Twenty20 league and Sheffield Shield. Marsh, 28, put in a poor performance during the Test series, scoring just 17 runs after returning to the side following a back injury. “Shaun Marsh is obviously disappointed with his own form in recent weeks and is out of the side, but remains in our thinking for the future while he works at state level,” said national selector John Inverarity. “As they say, class is permanent but form can be temporary.” Inverarity said Haddin will be rested after “a heavy program of Test cricket” in favour of debutant Wade. Australia have not named a vice-captain for the first three games because Haddin is resting and all-rounder Shane Watson is still unavailable due to injury. Brett Lee is included in a bowling attack which also features Ryan Harris and Xavier Doherty. Australia and India kick off the tri-nations tournament on February 5 with a match at the MCG.

Australian squad: Michael Clarke (captain), Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, Peter Forrest, Ryan Harris, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitchell Marsh, Clint McKay, Ricky Ponting, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner.

Kuyt looks to run & run...

Alec Kennedy

LIVERPOOL: Dirk Kuyt (above) is hoping for an extended run in Liverpool’s side after admitting he has found it “very difficult” not being a

regular starter in Kenny Dalglish’s plans. Kuyt climbed off the substitutes bench to hit the dramatic late winner as Dalglish’s side defeated bitter rivals Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup

fourth round on Saturday. It was Kuyt’s first goal in a Liverpool shirt since September and the Netherlands striker is now targeting a run of games — starting at Wolves on Tuesday — after enduring a frustrating campaign. “It has been very difficult,” said Kuyt, who has yet to win a trophy since moving to Anfield in August 2006. “I’m the type of player who needs games in a row. It’s difficult, I’m a player who has been used to playing every game. “The more I play the better I feel. I’ve been used to playing every game for the past 10 years of my career. That’s something I have to prove on the pitch and in training. “Obviously I just want to play every game and convince the manager of that every time I play. “When things aren’t going so well you just have to keep working hard and that’s what I did.” “We have set the standard this week,” added Kuyt. “Everyone was really disappointed about the Bolton game. “We didn’t put enough effort into the game. We weren’t at the level we want to play. We have proved many times we can compete with the best teams.”

Chelsea’s silver dreams start rusting Ian Winrow

LONDON: Andre Villas-Boas (pictured) has admitted Chelsea’s targets have changed this season and now his side’s immediate priority is close the gap on third-placed Tottenham Hotspur with victory at Swansea on Tuesday. The Blues manager has said the Premier League title is now beyond the club in but a 10 fourth round win over Queens Park Rangers maintained Chelsea’s interest in the FA Cup — and their Champions League campaign will resume at the end of next month. In the league, though, Villas-Boas’s team lie fourth and know they face a strong challenge for a top four finish from Arsenal, Newcastle United and Liverpool who are

currently on the fringes of the leading group. “We are within a five-point margin from the third-placed team and five points more than Arsenal in fifth,” said Villas-Boas. “It’s important to try and reach the top and go to Swansea fully motivated,” the Portuguese added. “They lost to Sunderland but are on a good run, plus they are one of the teams that play fantastic football. “It should build up to an exciting game, and it’s important for us to show consistency in the away games but do better than at Norwich (where Chelsea drew 0-0). Swansea have impressed at home this season but the trip will be less charged than Chelsea’s short journey to QPR’s Loftus Road. Midfielder Frank Lampard remains an injury doubt, however, after missing the 1-0 victory over Rangers that came courtesy of a disputed Juan Mata penalty, while John-Obi Mikel has been ruled out. “Frank we have to see how he comes back for training, he is still a doubt, and Mikel shouldn’t make it,” Villas-Boas added.

Pride at stake for Morocco’s Gerets Nick Reeves

LIBREVILLE: Eric Gerets (right, in white), in what could be his last match as coach of Morocco, will expect his players to end their curtailed stay in Gabon with a flourish in the ‘dead’ clash with Niger here Tuesday. Both sides are heading home after this final Africa Cup of Nations Group C tie having been trumped in the race for a quarter-

final place by co-hosts Gabon and Tunisia. While pride is the only prize at stake it promises to be a hard fought affair, with Niger seeking their first ever Cup points and Gerets hoping his team will show enough to persuade his paymasters that he is worth his reported 200,000 euros a month salary. After Friday’s 3-2 loss to Gabon which sealed Morocco’s fate the former Marseille manager took refuge in his team hotel lounge,

drawing on a large cigar as he contemplated his future. Speaking after that painful defeat the Belgian said: “If they [Moroccan Football Federation] let me do my job I will continue, if they are not happy with my performance they will let me know. For 15 months no one has talked about bad performances so it would be a bit surprising [to be sacked], but in my job it can happen.”

Park’s Double boost Neil Johnston

MANCHESTER: Manchester United’s Park JiSung has urged his teammates to get over their FA Cup disappointment and concentrate on securing a domestic and European double. Record 11-times winners United were stung by Dirk Kuyt’s late winner which earned Liverpool a dramatic 2-1 FA Cup fourth round victory over their bitter rivals at Anfield on Saturday. But champions United remain just three points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and South Korea midfielder Park, speaking ahead of Tuesday’s league match at home to Stoke, insisted United they could not afford to dwell on the Liverpool defeat. “We must quickly forget about this game, move on and look to the future,” Park told Manchester United TV (MUTV). “We still have the Premier League and the Europa League to focus on.” United are entering a critical spell. After Stoke, they face a huge game at fourthplaced Chelsea on February 5 before entertaining Liverpool in the league six days later. Then Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, who failed to advance past the

group stages of the Champions League, face a tricky two-legged Europa League tie with Ajax. Park added United must not lose concentration as they did at Liverpool. “We controlled the ball which is what we wanted before the game,” he added. “We did that well but that couldn’t get the win for us. “In the team meeting, we talked about trying to keep possession and then make chances. We did that and that’s why we played very well. “But then we lost concentration for a moment and ended up giving them the goal to make it 2-1. Everyone was quiet afterwards because we all feel disappointed.” Ferguson was missing several key players at Liverpool due to injury including England striker Wayne Rooney, Portugal winger Nani and defender Phil Jones. It remains to be seen whether the Stoke game will come too soon for any of them but England defender Rio Ferdinand could return from a back injury. “Rio only had one training session ahead of the Liverpool game,” said Ferguson. “We couldn’t gamble with that.

Van the Man penalises Villa

LONDON: Arsenal staged a remarkable recovery from 20 down to beat Aston Villa 32 as they kept their FA Cup hopes alive with a dramatic fourth round win at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The Gunners, without a major trophy since winning the FA Cup seven years ago, were booed off by their own

Wenger hails morale booster Steve Griffiths

LONDON: Arsene Wenger hopes Arsenal’s epic fightback against Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round will act as a spark for his team’s bid to qualify for the Champions League. Wenger admits morale among his squad has been at a low ebb after three successive defeats, so this was exactly the kind of spirited effort he was looking for. And the French coach is hopeful this result will make his players believe they are good enough to overhaul fourth placed Chelsea. “I hope it will convince the team we have the qualities needed and we can transfer that to the Premier League. When you don’t win your belief goes,”Wenger said

fans at half-time with their realistic chances of winning a trophy this season left hanging by a thread after a Richard Dunne header and Darren Bent strike had put Premier League rivals Villa 20 in front. But three goals in seven second half minutes courtesy of two Robin van Persie (above, left) penalties separated by a Theo Walcott (above, right) effort, after an Alan Hutton clearance rebounded in off the England international, turned the match on its head. “We wanted to stay in the Cup,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told ESPN when asked how the Gunners had recovered. “Two-nil was very harsh for us at half-time. It was just a question of keeping our structure and then we got an early [goal to make it] 2-1.” Frustrated Villa manager Alex McLeish added: “We had a terrible eight minutes...The goal they [Arsenal] got gave them a huge lift and they scored the second goal far too quick after that.” Arsenal, still in the Champions League but 18 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, will now play either Sunderland or second-tier Middlesbrough in the last 16 after they drew 1-1 earlier on Sunday.
