Delay in immersion created more problems for the police force even as civic officials struggled to clear the remains of the idols before the CoP. Postnoon Team

H
yderabad city woke up on Sunday after a thunderstorm at night and found its foyer full of action. On the one hand was Ganesh immersion dragging on and on the other side was a tense police and public awaiting a Telangana protest march. Giving it a third dimension was the venue of international conference (CoP 11) about to begin in HICC which the protesters might target. As the Ganesh immersion was behind schedule, the city police notified deviation in march route from Necklace Road to Sanjeevaiah Park. Hundreds of trucks were parked and idols lay awaiting immersion on the Basheerbagh and Tank Bund Road. The whole of Necklace road and all its entry point were barricaded since last night, leaving the morning joggers fuming. The harassed-looking GHMC officials and cleaning contractors were struggling to deal with ever-increasing number of Ganeshas. “In spite of clear instructions from the government police failed to speed up the process of immersion”, points out a municipal official. “We shall be clearing the lakes by afternoon,

he Ganesha immersion festival turned sour late last night when three persons were killed and four children suffered injuries in accidents related to immersion. Two youngsters died at Chilkaguda cross roads near railway quarters when the lorry drivers carrying idols accelerated and the two were overthrown. They were crushed
under the lorry tyres. In another incident, a priest, Srikanth Sharma, died of heart-stroke near Kabutarkhana. The 27-year-old Sharma was dancing when he suddenly collapsed. He was shifted to hospital but died. Four children were also injured in separate incidents connected with immersion procession.

KCR makes last-minute T-bid It's now clear that the beleaguered UPA will not take up Telangana issue in the near future, but TRS leaders still hope to get a favourable statement, if not a T-state.

he fire is gone from his brand. The TRS patriarch, K Chandrasekhar Rao, who now wants dialogue and discussions rather than street violence, has decided to stay put in Delhi and continue to canvass for T statehood. But as of today, the UPA has not indicated it was ready to grapple with the issue and take a decision. The Centre is caught up in far more serious issues than Telangana, central leaders impressed upon
KCR. On Saturday too, KCR made a vain bid to extract a favourable statement from Union minister and incharge of AP affairs, Ghulam Nabi Azad. Speaking to Postnoon from New Delhi, KCR’s close aide and party politburo member B Vinod Kumar said that the party chief would continue to hold negotiations with Congress leaders in New Delhi. “Our negotiation process is still on. We will continue to hold discussions with Congress leaders. There is a conducive environment in Delhi for creation of a sepa-
rate Telangana state,” he said. Vinod said that the Congress had asked KCR to wait for a month to take a decision on the Telangana issue. “We think the mega event (CoP-11) is one of the important reasons for this,” TRS leader G Kishor Kumar told Postnoon on Saturday.
NO SCOPE FOR VIOLENCE , SAYS TRS “We will not go into agitation mode. Instead, we will continue to hold our agitation in a peaceful manner like what we have been doing since the formation of our party,” said another TRS
leader. However, he refused to comment on the rift between the TJAC and TRS. On the other hand, the Cabinet ministers from Telangana, who successfully negotiated with the chief minister to allow the Tmarch on Sunday, are jubiliant with their success. “Earlier, Telangana supporters asked us to resign from our posts. If we had resigned, we would not have succeeded in convincing the chief minister to allow the Telangana march,” minister for women and child welfare V Sunitha Laxma Reddy told Postnoon on Saturday.

anesh Chathurthi celebrations and the Tmarch have dampened spirits of Citybased gamers. The Flipkart gaming tournament that began on Saturday saw a thinner turnout than expected. However, organisers are expecting more gamers to turn up today. Yesterday was dedicated to the DoTA competition and for qualifying stage of Fifa. Hyderabad traditionally does not have many DoTA gamers, but a lot more people were expected to participate in the Fifa tournament. Apart from Fifa, DoTA and Counter Strike, there are also games such as Super Street Fighter IV (XBox 360) and Sony Street Cricket (PS3) at the event. The tournament is planned in two stages and the first stage will end with the tournament in Hyderabad.

E
ven as the police and State administration are watching over the preparations of the T-march in the north-western part of the City, trouble broke out on OU campus, where a determined students’ JAC defied warnings and broke through the police barricade. Police bid to dissuade the protesters by firing teargas shells proved futile and some 300 students, giving full vent to their lung power, ran through the police line which led to cane-charging and firing of rubber bullets. It was all smoke and mayhem at the NCC gates. Protesters and police were engaged in a pitched battle at the time of going to press.— Rahul Ramakrishna

n a scaled-down CoP scenario, some 2,000 delegates from 150 countries will be converging in Hyderabad tomorrow. The earlier estimate was 10,000 to 12,000. However, the number of NGO delegates participating is not known as yet. The meet will discuss and adopt further decisions to ensure the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology.
These will include decisions to advance the implementation of the 10-year Strategic Plan for the Protocol adopted in 2010 and the entry into force of the Nagoya — Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Protocol. This comes at a time when Jamaica deposited its instrument of ratification to the Protocol on September 25, 2012. The Cartagena Protocol Biosafety was adopted on January 29, 2000 and entered into force on September 11, 2003.

MoD scraps Coast Guard tender for light choppers

With only Dhruv left in the race, the process could not go ahead as single-vendor tenders are not allowed by procurement rules
A man lifts his child to bid goodbye to Haj pilgrims as they leave PTI for the pilgrimage to Mecca, in Guwahati on Saturday.
NEW DELHI: Coast Guard’s plan to boost its maritime surveillance capabilities will have to wait as the defence ministry has scrapped its tender to procure 16 light helicopters. Only two companies — Indian Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), offering its ALH Dhruv, and European Eurocopter with its twin-engine Panther MB — were in the race for the deal expected to be worth over `1,000 crore. The tender, issued in July last year, was cancelled by the defence ministry after it was found that the helicopter offered by Eurocopter was not compliant with one of the request for proposal requirements, defence ministry officials told PTI here. With only ALH Dhruv left in the race, the ministry could not go ahead as single-vendor tenders are not allowed by the Defence Procurement Procedure of the ministry, they said. The procurement was part of Coast Guard’s efforts to enhance its capabilities to tackle terrorism and other threats emanating from sea and to prevent any 26/11-type attacks. The Coast Guard is now planning to issue a fresh tender with new and reviewed specifi-
cations in the first quarter of 2013. In the aftermath of 26/11 attacks, government had cleared several proposals to enhance Coast Guard’s aerial surveillance capabilities and had sanctioned acquisition of both fixedwing aircraft and helicopters. However, tenders for procuring six maritime surveillance
aircraft and dry-leasing 16 helicopters from foreign companies have been scrapped due to one reason or the other in the last four years. Coast Guard wanted the helicopters to be equipped with surveillance devices to carry out search and rescue roles in coastal areas. PTI
Charges against Malik tomorrow
Karnataka releases Cauvery water to TN
7 pilgrims die as bus overturns
NEW DELHI: A court here is likely to frame charges tomorrow against Wasim Akram Malik, arrested by the National Investigation Agency for his alleged role in the terror attack at the Delhi High Court last year. District Judge H S Sharma, who on September 4 had decided to frame charges against Malik under various penal provisions of the IPC, the Explosive Substance Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, had fixed October 1 for the same. The court had earlier declined the NIA’s plea to try Malik under the stringent charge of waging war against India, saying merely because an e-mail referring to the release of Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru was sent by the accused after the blast, it does not mean an offence against the state was committed. The September 7, 2011 terror attack at the High Court’s reception killed 15 people and 79.

CHENNAI: Seven pilgrims were killed and 11 injured when a bus, on way from Tarapith to Kolkata, overturned on NH 2 at Gurap in Hooghy district today. The bus, carrying over 30 pilgrims from Vaishali district in Bihar, was on a tour of religious places in the region and had arrived at Tarapith Kali temple only yesterday from Deoghar's Basukinath temple in neighbouring Jharkhand, Burdwan superintendent of police SMH Mirza said. The accident spot was not very far away from Burdwan district. The 11 injured were being treated at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital where the condition of some was stated to be critical, Mirza said. The SP said the driver probably lost control and the vehicle overturned twice as local people started rescue operation soon afterwards alerted by the screams. Other injured passengers of the bus were PTI being treated at Dhaniakhali Rural Hospital.

Karnataka today began release of Cauvery River water to Tamil Nadu, triggering widespread protests across the district and disrupting vehicular movement. Irrigation authorities told PTI that about 5000 cusecs of water was being released from Krishnarajasagar Dam and Kabini Reservoir since last night. According to sources, Karnataka will be ensuring flow of 9000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu. The decision comes a day after an all-party meeting decided to request the PM to review the directive of the Cauvery River Authority headed by him, asking Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of water. The all-party meet decision was taken in the backdrop of Supreme Court directing the state to implement the order. As the water release began, the farmers blocked the Bangalore-Mysore highway near Gejjalagere and more than 50 people including JD (S) MLA, CS Puttaraju have PTI been arrested.

US polls
BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS: US President Barack Obama and rival Mitt Romney lay low Saturday ahead of next week’s debate, leaving their running mates to spar over policy and seek votes in key swing states. With the president off the campaign trail just 38 days before Americans vote on November 6, Romney spent a quiet day in Massachusetts, visiting the home of son Tagg in a Boston suburb and, according to his campaign, steering clear of debate preparation.
But with both men seeking an edge in their crucial first face-off of the campaign, they will undoubtedly be spending the bulk of their time between now and Wednesday’s debate in preparation for the showdown in Denver, one of about a dozen swing states where voters will determine the election. Obama travels to Nevada for an event on Sunday, and spends the next two days in the town of Henderson gearing up for Wednesday. AFP

Damascusbased citizen journalist Matar Ismail said the “army is taking revenge

And the regime is executing many men summarily.” The eastern suburbs of the capital are the centre of operations for the rebel Free Syrian Army’s fiercest and best organised battalions, including Tajamo Ansar al-Islam. On Wednesday, two car bombs struck an army headquarters in the heart of Damascus, and Tajamo Ansar al-Islam was the first FSA group to claim responsibility for the operation. WASHINGTON: The man they call the Dog Whisperer led thousands of Washington dog lovers and their four-legged pals on a “pack walk” Saturday to raise electionyear awareness of the plight of unwanted canines. “You’re a rock star, Cesar!” shouted a fan as Cesar Millan, the onetime illegal immigrant from Mexico who is the best-known dog trainer on television, kicked off his second annual National Family Pack Walk on the National Mall. Seen in more than 100 countries, “The Dog Whisperer” features Millan working his magic on dogs with all sorts of behavioral issues, or, more to the point, educating their owners how to become calm but assertive “pack leaders”. The pack walk, however, is geared more toward bringing public attention to the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of abused and abandoned dogs — a cause, Millan said, that could do with some legislative help. “It’s about people coming together to create awareness,” Millan, 43, told AFP prior to the walk that attracted a wide variety of dogs, both purebred and mongrels, including a few dressed up in tutus and Batman capes. “We want politicians to care and understand
that there’s a law to be made about animal rights.” Millan, who brought one of his own gentle pitbulls to the walk, added: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be measured in the way animals are

Only the brave of the heart and the stout of the lungs can survive a stroll on that stretch. They say the weak of constitution are advised to holiday near the sea so that they may benefit from the salty wind from on the beach and grow stronger. It’s not sure if those whom you see stretching and running there may have benefitted similarly, but if they can brave that and work out, that talks about the top condition of their body. However, there’s no need to make the stench and the general lack of cleanliness in the lake and on its premises any worse. Post immersion, the lake looks massacred with the idols mostly made of plaster of paris floating about. Had it been made of clay, it would not have caused pollution. They say the water of Hussainsagar was drinkable, a long time ago. One cannot imagine doing that now. Some variations of plaster of paris have silica and asbestos, both materials very harmful if it gets into our system. One may ask, this has been going on for years, why must it change now? Rest assured, if they may not cause harm instantly, in the long run, they will. So, next year, let’s have our immersion truly eco-friendly, shall we?

My name’s Khan but... From the hip SYED SHOAIB
N
o innocent person should be branded a terrorist and put behind bars simply because s/he belongs to a minority community, the Supreme Court told the Gujarat police. Police must ensure that no innocent person has the feeling of sufferance only because “My name is Khan, but I am not a terrorist,” a Bench of Justices HL Dattu and CK Prasad said on Wednesday. It ordered the acquittal of 11 persons arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and other laws for allegedly planning to create communal violence during the Jagannath Puri Yatra in Ahmedabad in 1994. “We emphasise and deem it necessary to repeat that the gravity of the evil to the community from terrorism can never furnish an adequate reason for invading personal liberty, except in accordance with the procedure established by the Constitution and the law,” the Bench maintained. Being an anti-terrorist law, TADA’s provisions could not be liberally construed, the Bench said. “The district superintendent of police and the inspectorgeneral and all others entrusted with operating the law must not do anything that allows its misuse and abuse and [must] ensure that no innocent person has the feeling of sufferance only because ‘My name is Khan, but I am not a terrorist’.” Writing the judgment, Justice Prasad said, “We appreciate the anxiety of police officers entrusted with preventing terrorism and the difficulty faced by them. Terrorism is a crime far serious in nature, graver in impact and highly dangerous in consequence. It can put the nation in shock, create fear and panic and disrupt communal peace and harmony. This task becomes more difficult when it is done by organised groups with outside support.” But in the country of the Mahatma, the “means are more
important than the end. Invoking the TADA without following the safeguards, resulting in acquittal, gives an opportunity to many and also to the enemies of the country to propagate that it has been misused and abused.” In this case, Ashraf Khan and 10 others, who were convicted under the TADA, the Arms Act and the IPC were aggrieved that no prior approval of the SP, as mandated under the provisions, was obtained before their arrest and recording of statements. The court’s observation opens a can of worms relating to human rights violations against innocent majority among minorities the world over, being tortured in detention for a crime they have not committed. In April 2012, coinciding with the acquittal of Delhibased Mohammed Amir Khan who spent 14 years in jail, a document released by the All Indian Milli Council claimed that 300 cases were registered against innocent Muslim youth since 1997 in terrorism cases and incidents that never happened. After receiving approximately $1-million compensation for the ordeal he went through in 2007, Bangalore doctor Mohammed Haneef received a formal apology from the Australian government in which the Australian Federal Police acknowledged that it was indeed a mistake and that Dr Haneef is innocent of the offence he was suspected of in the 2007 Glasgow International Airport attack. Military reports released by Wikileaks in 2011 revealed the laziness of both thinking and detail in the handling of Australia’s Mamdouh Habib and David Hicks. “In detaining terror suspects, US sloppiness reigns supreme,” maintained The Atlantic. While focusing on these false alarms that cause loss of a lifetime of opportunities for those unrelated to crime, the war against terrorism should continue. We should fight as a united world of differences, affected hard by violence and counter threats perpetrated by ideological groups.

Spanish bailout looms The cost of pumping cash into Spain’s troubled banks is expected to help send Spain’s public debt to 85.3 per cent of gross domestic product in 2012 and 90.5 per cent in 2013. Katell Abiven feedback@postnoon.com
A
fter four years fighting the markets and a mushrooming economic crisis, Spain appears finally poised to cave in and apply for a sovereign bailout. The economic descent has accelerated in the past few days: rising anti-austerity protests; snap elections over independence demands in Catalonia; and, this weekend, a darkening outlook for debt. Hovering over the nation is the imminent threat of a sovereign debt downgrade by Moody’s Investors Service, due by the end of the weekend, which could rate Spanish bonds at the equivalent of junk bonds. The timing could be decided by the EU’s calendar; Spain is on the agenda for a meeting of eurozone finance ministers on October 8 and again for a EU summit October 18-19. Like Ireland, Greece and Portugal before it, Spain, whose economy is twice the size of all three bailed-out nations combined, can no longer afford to finance its debt on wary markets without help. The next test comes on Thursday when Spain will try to sell bonds expiring in two, three and five years on the same day that the European Central Bank holds its monthly meeting. The ECB calmed debt markets in early September by outlining plans to buy the bonds of stricken eurozone states that apply for aid from eurozone bailout funds and submit to their strict conditions. But as Spain hesitates to take the leap, interest rates have edged up again, with investors demanding a return of close to six per cent to purchase its 10-year government bonds. Investors don’t anticipate that the ECB meeting this week will provide much guidance. “In principle, we don’t expect anything new because now it is the turn of the governments to take decisions,” Spanish brokerage Renta 4 said in a weekly report. Though openly fretting over the conditions of a bailout, Spain seems to be completing all its homework in preparation for such a rescue. On Saturday it delivered to parliament a 2013 budget with 39 billion euros in new spending cuts and taxes and plans for 43 new structural reforms negotiated with Brussels. On Friday, the country took a
key step by releasing an audit of its 14 major banking groups, half of which failed a severe stress test and will need some 59 billion euros in new capital. Spain’s government has already struck a deal for a rescue loan of up to 100 billion euros for the banks. Madrid says it will probably need only about 40 billion euros from the eurozone loan because the lenders can find much of the cash elsewhere, including by selling assets.
“THE NEXT HURDLE IS THE BAILOUT ” Eurozone and IMF leaders welcomed the banking audit results. On Monday, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will host the EU’s economic affairs chief, Olli Rehn. The market reaction will demonstrate whether Madrid has managed to reassure investors. “The next hurdle is the bailout which at this point appears to be inevitable,” said Craig Erlam, analyst London-based foreign exchange broker Alpari. “What matters to the market is that Spain asks for the rescue,” said Montserrat Formoso Fraga, economist at Spanish fund manager Tressis. Spain’s budget and reforms were seen on financial markets as “a step closer to the bailout which, they believe, will solve the problems of Spain and the eurozone,” said a report by London-based foreign currency traders Moneycorp. In the meantime, the figures seem to be getting to be worse. The cost of pumping cash into Spain’s troubled banks is expected to help send Spain’s public debt to 85.3 per cent of gross domestic product in 2012 and 90.5 per cent in 2013. It will also push the public deficit to 7.4 per cent of output this year, Budget Minister Cristobal Montoro said Saturday, well above the 6.3-per cent target that he had vowed to meet just 48 hours earlier.
Children wave flags through smoke thrown by firemen and policemen during a demonstration of public service workers against government’s spending cuts in Sevilla on Saturday. AFP/CRISTINA QUICLER Montoro argues, however, that the EU target excludes the banking rescue costs, meaning Madrid can still realistically aim for a 6.3-per cent deficit excluding that sizeable item. Spain, like other rescued eurozone nations before it, is showing how difficult it is to trim a public deficit in the midst of a recession and with one in four workers unemployed. The Bank of Spain this week said Spanish gross domestic product had declined at a “significant pace” in the third quarter of this year. Public discontent is growing, with anti-austerity protesters packing into central Madrid on Saturday evening for the third night this week. The strain is showing in particular in the Spanish regions, which are heavily indebted and yet responsible for half of all spending including on health and education. The powerful northeastern region of Catalonia will hold snap elections on November 25 over an independence drive. Five regions have asked Madrid for help from a liquidity fund, with the requests already amounting to 16 billion AFP euros.

INTERVIEW SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2012
QUEEN OF THE CATWALK
One of India’s top fashion show directors, Anu Ahuja talks about the challenges of her chosen career and misconceptions about the fashion world. SUNORY DUTT
feedback@postnoon.com ou started modelling at the age of 19 and went on to rule the ramp for over a decade. How did the switch to fashion direction happen?
Y
I did my first modelling campaign while still in college. Back then I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to take it up as a career, it just happened. Then in 2001, I got the opportunity to work on the Femina Miss India show, which was great because it helped me decide the path I wanted to take. I really enjoyed working on it and went on to direct the Miss India shows independently in 2004 and 2005.
Do you miss modelling? It was an absolutely amazing time and I have the best memories from it but now when I look back, I don’t miss it. I guess there is a time and place for everything that happens in life.
What does directing a fashion show encompass? I conceptualise the show and do everything for it till it is implemented, right from stage design, lights, music, model selection, and also directing it. So basically I produce and direct shows and events. The concept can either be completely my responsibility or sometimes involve brainstorming with the designer or brand. A typical day at work for me starts early where I check on stage design before the models arrive. I have to ensure all set backstage and the designers’ clothes are in. Then a briefing session with the models followed by a dry rehearsal with music takes place. Post lunch the models’ make-up and hair is decided and begun. I go on to design the lighting with my light experts. Then it’s time to tweak music and make minor changes if required, followed by discussions and briefing with the compere. If the show includes dance or live music etc., I work on that. Finally it’s the all-important technical rehearsal with everyone involved. I usually don’t design the
decor of the venue but if I’m part of that, then the final briefing, touch-ups etc happen at this stage. If I have a few minutes to myself I might freshen up and change for the show. And then it’s show time!
What of the infamous model and designer tantrums? There aren’t really many tantrums either from models or designers. Some might just be a bit more difficult to work with than others, that’s all.
What are some of the challenges of the job? Gruelling schedules, long hours, sometimes too much travel, not enough time to make and keep friends and relationships and high stress.
How do you deal with the superficiality and insecurity of this industry? Insecurity is part of human nature and I’ve seen insecure people in all walks of life, be it business, politics, movies, professional services etc. So I’m not sure why people have this perception that only fashion has insecure people. Perhaps it’s more noticed since you’re as relevant and important as your last collection, show, or ad or maybe it’s just a more ‘visible’ profession where one is constantly under the spotlight. People tend to feel insecure when they’re taken out of their comfort zone and in our line of work, we’re constantly taking ourselves out of our comfort zones all the time, challenging ourselves. It can also be a short-lived career which breeds insecurity.
As a mother to young twins how do you strike a balance between
work and family? I strive constantly to do justice to both; believe me it’s not easy! I’m lucky to have a flexible job, have finally managed some good help at home, and have a very supportive mother and a hands-on husband, whom I depend on con-

stantly. It would have been impossible without them.
Which have been your most memorable shows? There have been quite a few and for different reasons. Sabyasachi’s show in Delhi, 2011; Rohit Bal’s show in Mumbai, 2012; Anamika Khanna’s show in Kolkata, 2012; the Mai Mumbai show with Naomi Campbell, 2011; Then there have been shows at great locations like The Lido in Paris with Ritu Beri; BMW-Suneet Varma show in Udaipur 2012; closing ceremony of The Commonwealth Games in Melbourne etc.
What are you working on at the moment? Multiple projects actually. Just for the month of October there’s the Wills Lifestyle India fashion week; Meera and Muzaffar Ali’s shows in Delhi and Mumbai; the L’Oreal show, Sabyasachi’s show in Mumbai... This is a very busy season for us.
You’ve made a significant contribution to the Indian fashion industry for over two decades. What’s your secret to being a part of it without disillusionment setting in? Frankly there have been times when I’ve felt quite disillusioned with it but then I look at the bright side of my work — travel, flexibility and the fact that I really enjoy what I do — and it’s forgotten. Rather than a fleeting moment in my life, the fashion industry has given me a solid career that’s held me in good stead for almost 22 years. It’s important to not get carried away with the glamour of the industry, fashion is a serious business.

GOLDEN YEARS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2012
Filmmakers and writers in Telugu film industry are finding it extremely difficult to weave interesting characters for older actors. But dearth of ideas is not the only reason why films rarely feature actors past their prime. Postnoon finds out.
LOST IN TIME HEMANTH KUMAR
hemanth.k@postnoon.com
F
ilms, which were once the reflection of the socio cultural changes in the society, have undergone a massive transformation, especially in the themes they explore. In the process, of late, the entire focus is on the youngsters and the fact that people between the age group of 18-30 form the major segment of the target audience has completely changed the way filmmakers think. No wonder, one hardly gets to see older actors in pivotal roles. At best, they end up being the voice of reason who inspire the hero to take the righteous path. This is a far cry from how Hollywood and to an extent even Bollywood treats the older actors. Actors and directors like Clint Eastwood, Woody Allen are still playing lead roles, despite their age and in Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah carry the entire film on their shoulders. So why is Telugu film industry reluctant to write intriguing roles for elder actors? “Compared to Hollywood or Bollywood, the market for Telugu cinema is quite small, which hardly leaves us any scope to experiment,” screenwriter
Gopi Mohan says. Elucidating more on the issue, he says, “Long ago, films used to spark debate about the social issues prevalent in the society. With the proliferation of media, I believe that people don’t expect cinema to raise issues which affect our lives. The focus has being shifted completely to young actors and they want the adrenaline rush every time they watch a film.” Back in the 50s and 60s, actors like SV Ranga Rao, Suryakantham and Gummadi used to play vital roles in most of their films. Despite the presence of actors like NTR, ANR and later Krishna and Shobhan Babu, character artistes had their own space. That changed to a large extent in the 90s when Telugu cinema embraced commercial cinema completely. Would people like to watch a film where actors, who are past their prime, are cast in lead roles? In the past few years, there have been films like Aa Naluguru, Mee Sreyobhilashi, Sontha Vooru, Onamalu, Midhunam and Devasthanam which were completely driven by actors like Rajendra Prasad, LB Sriram, SP Balu and K Vishwananth. Despite the critical acclaim, such films rarely make big bucks at box office. “Such films don’t get good screens which further adds to the number of issues which filmmakers already face to draw the crowds,” Gopi Mohan says, adding, “Let’s face it, we

don’t have someone like Amitabh Bachchan in our industry who still has the charm, despite his age, to be widely accepted by the audience.” Filmmaker P Sunil Kumar Reddy concurs with Gopi Mohan’s perspective and says, “These days, the stories in our films are completely aimed at youngsters from the age group 18-30. TV serials has taken over the onus of showcasing family dramas and when people come to watch a film, they expect something larger than life. So, it’s difficult to cast senior actors in pivotal roles and even the directors who do make family dramas, end up stereotyping elder actors.” Is there an alternative? “Luckily devotional films have been the saving grace. They have a specific target audience and there’s a lot of scope to write good characters for senior actors in such films,” Sunil Kumar Reddy says. It’s not that roles for senior actors have completely disappeared from mainstream films, but it’s just not the same anymore for an entire generation of movie aficionados who grew up watching legendary actors like SV Ranga Rao play amazing roles even in the twilight of their illustrious careers. With time, most of the supporting actors from yesteryears are forgotten and they become vague memories of the past. Perhaps, it won’t be too late before they get lost in time.

Auction of Monet painting
Experts miffed at restoration
As part of the ongoing review of its collections, the Cleveland Museum of Art has identified Claude Monet’s painting, Wheat Field (1881) for deaccession through public auction. In keeping with the museum’s policy and the accepted guidelines established by the AAMD, all proceeds from the sale of this artwork will be used for future art acquisitions.

Muse Art Gallery is bringing the best of young and senior artists of India together in a unique exhibition. The juxtaposition of tradition and contemporary works promises to be a visual treat. Postnoon News feedback@postnoon.com

radition meets modernity at Muse Art Gallery this Sunday. Works by 33 artists from across the country will be on display at Multiversal-2, an exhibition which brings together the best of senior and new artists on one platform. This is the second time that Muse Art Gallery facilitates the meeting of the old and the new. Last year, the exhibition was limited to artists from Andhra Pradesh, but this year, the scope has widened. Some of the biggest artists, who are of international repute, will be on display. The juxtaposition of the younger artists with the more senior, experienced painters is deliberate, says Kaali Sudheer, founder and curator of the
gallery. According to him, the younger artists, having grown up in a post-liberalisation world, are more bold and free-spirited in their themes and expression. Comparatively, the older artist are more likely to be influenced by traditional imagery. The mixture of bold and contemporary with tradition and classic will
be an interesting proposition, Sudheer feels. The artwork varies in media, as well as in style and theme. The curator believes that younger artists whose works will be displayed among those of their seniors, will gain confidence from the experience. “Younger artists from India possess great potential, both in

Rejuvenating design for daily life
An attempt an bringing back art’s purpose in society

The Bauhaus was the most influential modernist art school of the 20th century, one whose approach to teaching, and understanding art’s relationship to society and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and the United States long after it closed. It was shaped by the 19th and early 20th centuries trends such as Arts and Crafts movement, which had sought to level the distinction between fine and
applied arts, and to reunite creativity and manufacturing. This is reflected in the romantic medievalism of the school’s early years, in which it pictured itself as a kind of medieval crafts guild. The school is also renowned for its faculty, which included artists Wassily Kandinsky, Josef Albers, László Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee and Johannes Itten, architects Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and designer Marcel Breuer. The
motivations behind the creation of the Bauhaus lay in the 19th century, in anxieties about the soullessness of manufacturing and its products, and in fears about art’s loss of purpose in society. Creativity and manufacturing were drifting apart, and the Bauhaus aimed to unite them once again. Although the Bauhaus abandoned much of the ethos of the old academic tradition of fine art education, it maintained a stress on intellectual and theoretical pursuits.
terms of form and content. In some cases, their talent is comparable to international standards. With this kind of exposure, they would get the encouragement needed to achieve great expectations,”said Sudheer. Artists like Nityam Singha Roy, Raghunath Sahoo, Ramesh
ART FOR DUMMIES
Gorjala Chipa Sudhakar and many more will display their paintings at the gallery. Another reason for arranging such an exhibition, said Sudheer, was to provide avenues for gifted Indian artists to market their works. This will help assess the commercial aspect of the works in the art market, allow artists to get in touch with connoisseurs of art and encourage the younger lot to continue their artistic pursuits. Ananda Priya Foundation is the charity partner for the exhibition, which will preview at 7pm on September 30. The guests expected to attend the event include director Dasaradh, Madhura Sridhar Reddy, actresses Bhanushree Mehra and Swetha Basu. The show will be on view till October 19 at Muse Art Gallery at Marriott Hotel and Convention Centre.
Fine art and craft were brought together with the goal of problem solving for a modern industrial society. In so doing, the Bauhaus effectively leveled the old hierarchy of the arts, placing crafts on par with fine arts such as sculpture and painting, and thus inspiring artists in the late 20th century. The stress on experiment and problem solving at the Bauhaus has proved enormously influential for the approaches to education in the arts. It has led to the ‘fine arts’ being rethought as the ‘visual arts’, and art considered less as an adjunct of the humanities, like literature or history, and more as a kind of research science.

Plastics in Southern Ocean The first traces of plastic debris have been found in the once pristine environment of the Southern Ocean, according to a new study. The findings come after a 2.5-year, 70,000-mile voyage by the French scientific research vessel Tara. Samples from locations in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica revealed traces of plastic waste at a rate comparable to the global average.

Large earthquakes can alter seismicity patterns across the globe in very different ways, according to two new studies by US Geological Survey seismologists. While aftershocks have been defined as those smaller earthquakes that happen after and near the main rupture, scientists now say aftershocks are simply earthquakes of any size that would not have taken place had the main shock not struck.
With an overhaul of air quality laws due within a year in Europe, health advocates are calling for the European Commission to resist pressure to tone down the EU’s pollution standards and instead replace them with stronger UN guidelines. The call came two days after a report by the European Environment Agency showed that nearly one-third of urban residents breathe air that is far dirtier than the law allows.

Somewhere, 21-year-old Australian singer Laura Meldon croons while a plane rumbles overhead. Unfortunately, I cannot stay here forever. Now, the Jiva of Somajiguda is in its new avatar at the White House building as Imperia, which is essentially Jiva 2.0 – with better food and better ambience and better service. Can you ask for more?

f South Indian is the craving of the day, you already know where to go. Chutneys and Minerva have undoubtedly the best tiffins in the city.True to its namesake, Chutneys is worth a visit not because their idlis or dosas are exceptional but for their numerous accompaniments (their slightly sweetened coconut stew, we can swear, is to die for) and some native specials like Babai Hotel Idli/Guntur Idli, Mango Utappam or Steamed Dosa. With an equally decent assortment of items is Minerva, but our picks would be their rice items like Bisibele bath or their South/North Indian thalis .

THE CURIOUS CASE OF
SAMANTHA T
here has never been any dearth of offers for Samantha ever since she made a spectacular debut in Gautham Menon’s Ye Maya Chesave. After the success of Brindavanam and Dookudu, her ‘lucky’ tag made her the numero uno choice of most filmmakers here. Currently, she has films like Yevadu, Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, Nandini Reddy’s untitled film and Gautham Menon’s upcoming bilingual film Yeto Vellipoyindhi Manasu in the pipeline. There were rumours that she has been approached for two Tamil films which have Vijay and Suriya in lead roles and also for Naga Chaitanya’s upcoming film Thrayam, which will be directed by Vikram Kumar. The latest buzz is

ana’s upcoming film Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum seems to have quite a lot of surprises in store for the actor’s fans. For the first time, Rana is going to share screen space with Venkatesh in a special song and it’ll also have Rana grooving along with Sameera Reddy. Directed by Krish, the film’s shooting is complete except for this song. Mani Sharma has composed the music. The film’s audio will be launched on October 3.
fter Nithya Menen, Amala Paul and Poorna, the latest Malayalam actress to jump on to the Tollywood bandwagon is Archana Kavi. She’s going to play one of the lead roles in Madhura Sreedhar’s upcoming bilingual film titled 123, which also stars Mahat Raghavendra and Swathi. Born and brought up in New Delhi, her tryst with films began in 2009 when Lal Jose spotted her on TV. “My father is a journalist and I have always wanted to do something related to media after completing my degree in business administration. I was doing an internship at India Vision TV channel in Kerala when Lal Jose asked me to audition for his film Neelathaamara, which was written by MT Vasudevan Nair, who is a legend in Malayalam literature. After
that, I acted in Mummy & Me, which was also a critical and commercial success,” she says. Despite the initial success, she decided to be choosy about her films and when Vasantha Balan approached her for Aaravan, she signed the film immediately. “My role in the film might seem small but there was a lot of scope to perform. It took almost a year to shoot,” she recalls. So what impressed her so much about Madhura Sreedhar’s film? “It was a breakaway from the roles I had been doing in Malayalam and trust me, it’s the sort of film which you would definitely want to watch the moment you hear the basic plot. I am a sucker for romance,” she signs off. The film’s principal shooting begins from October 11. Sunil Kashyap is going to compose the music and MVK Reddy is producing it.
that she’s going to team up with Pawan Kalyan in Trivikram Srinivas’ upcoming film. BVSN Prasad is going to produce this film and it’s likely to go on floors this November. Not long ago, Samantha had promised not to sign any new films until she completes all her current commitments. With Yeto Vellipoyindhi Manasu and Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu in their last stages of producers, Telugu and Tamil film producers seem to be knocking at her doors to sign her for their upcoming films. The ball is in her court now and it remains to be seen how many films she can accommodate in her diary in the next few months. Clearly, Samantha is spoilt for choice.

inger-actor Justin Timberlake enjoys throwing lavish dinner parties for his friends. The 31-yearold says the secret to being the perfect host is to offer guests an abundant supply of food and booze, reports femalefirst.co.uk. “The key to good hosting is to make sure everyone has enough to eat — and booze on. We tend to host Sunday barbecues, which is convenient in football season. Everybody can do chips and dips,” Timberlake told food blog Bon Appetit. IANS

The 26-year-old plays the iconic actress in an upcoming TV movie Liz & Dick and she claims she found it easy to play the character because she can identify with the high-profile lifestyle that Elizabeth led. “I’m a huge Elizabeth Taylor fan, and I relate to her on a lot of levels — living in the public eye, dealing with the stress of what other people say, whether it’s true or not,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted Lohan as saying.

Anand draws Carlsen; Caruana continues lead Caruana continues to lead in the soccer-like scoring system in the tournament that gives three points for a win and one for a draw.
SAO PAULO (BRAZIL): World Champion Viswanathan Anand’s hunt for the elusive victory continued as he played out fifth draw on the trot, signing peace with Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the fifth round of 5th Final Masters, here. Yet another draw, coming with white pieces, did not serve Anand’s cause in any way as the lead positions remained unchanged after the end of the Sao Paulo leg of the super tournament. second on seven points and the Armenian has only himself to blame for the missed chances that would have helped bridged the gap. With Carlsen on six points and Anand on five, the tournament is only simmering up and much will be known only after the matches resume a week from now. For the records, Karjakin and Vallejo Pons share the last spot with three points apiece. For Anand, the Sao Paulo part of the Final Masters simply did not work at all. The Indian ace faced the Queen’s Indian defence as white against Carlsen and again got very little out of PTI the opening.
Kyiv sail into final NEW DELHI: Ukraine’s Dynamo Kyiv gave a lesson in possession football to their Indian counterparts when they hammered The Sports Hostel, Tamil Nadu 6-0 to reach the U-17 boys final of the 53rd Subroto Cup here today. They will now face MSP High School, Kerala, who are also making a maiden entry in the final of the competition. Given the control and poise the visitors displayed in the semifinal, they would be difficult to stop. Rostyslav Taranukha opened the scoring in the ninth minute and doubled the score in the 21st. The twin strike opened the floodgates as Dmytro Zayikyn (27, 48) and Denys Kostyshyn (29, 59) scored two each to complete the humiliation for the Tamil Nadu boys. Dynamo Kyiv coach Sergyi Bezhenar was elated with his team’s display and said there was no reason to think why they should not take the trophy home. The coach said he would play the same combiPTI nation in the final.

Two-time winner Deriba Merga holds the course record of 59:15 seconds clocked in 2008, which is his personal best in this distance. Last year’s champion Desisa suffered from Achilles tendon

usa 10 Vs Europe 6 SEPT 28-30
Europe surge, but US are favourites
If Europe are to win, they have to match the record last-day comeback set by the US team at Brookline, Massachusetts in 1999 when they won from four down. Allan Kelly
CHICAGO: The United States maintained a stranglehold on the 39th Ryder Cup on Saturday, winning the foursomes and sharing the fourballs to leave Europe trailing 10-6 at the end of the day. That left Davis Love and his men in prime position to retain the trophy they lost agonisingly at Celtic Manor, Wales two years ago. It left Europe needing to match the record last day comeback set by the US team at Brookline, Massachusetts in 1999 when they won from four down. Saturday afternoon’s fourballs ended with two wins for Europe as darkness fell after the Americans had won the first two on the back of dominating the morning foursomes 3-1. To retain the cup on Sunday, Jose Maria Olazabal’s men need to win eight out of the closing 12 singles, a highlyunlikely scenario given that the Americans have habitually been stronger on the final day. The Americans need just four and a half points to get past the winning post. Mission impossible as con-
cerns Europe for some, but US crowd-pleaser Bubba Watson said there was still plenty fight left in the European team. The home team took up early Saturday where they left off Friday evening with one
hand round the European throats as the star duo of Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley once again led the charge. Their 7 and 6 thumping of former world No.1s Lee Westwood and Luke Donald
equalled the highest ever 18hole winning margin by a Ryder Cup pairing, and the first time such a drubbing had been handed out since 1991. Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson scored their second straight win for the United States, while Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker turned the tables on Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell who beat them in the first match out on Friday. Only English pair Ian Poulter and Justin Rose provided some respite for Olazabal with a vicory at the last hole over Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson. That left the Americans 8-4 ahead at the end of the morning’s play and Olazabal saying his team had to at least carry the afternoon session to have any realistic chance of retaining the trophy on Sunday. But that never looked likely as once again the hosts dominated from the start of the fourballs. There was something for Europe to cheer at last when Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia, both pointless through the three first sessions, defeated Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker at the last hole.

PALLEKELE, SRI LANKA: Sri Lanka thumped the West Indies by nine wickets in a low-scoring match — with the help of their spinners led by Ajantha Mendis (2-12) and Mahela Jayawardene hitting an unbeaten 65 — for the second win in as many matches.

Defending champions England avoided another mishap with a comfortable six-wicket win over New Zealand with Steven Finn taking a career best 3-16 and Luke Wright scoring 76 in a 149-run chase. England had lost by 15 runs against the West Indies, while Sri Lanka had a Super Over win
West Indies captain Darren Sammy (R) congratulates Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene after their victory at the Pallekele International Cricket AFP/ PRAKASH SINGH Stadium on Saturday. over New Zealand in their first matches. Sri Lanka must avoid defeat in their last match against England while the West Indies need to beat the Black Caps with a superior net run-rate — both matches here on Monday — to
reach the last four. In case Sri Lanka lose to England and the West Indies beat New Zealand — it will come down to net run-rate to decide the semi-finalists, with three teams on four points. New Zealand’s slim chance
of reaching the semi-final hinges on Sri Lanka winning their last match and they beat the West Indies big. Jayawradene and Kumar Sangakkara (39 not out) knocked off the target in just 15.2 overs, as both tamed the Windies spin attack. “Overall it’s a very good team effort,” said Jayawardene. “When they were going after our bowlers I just kept changing the bowlers and it worked well.” Jayawardene’s counterpart Darren Sammy added: “They bowled really well to us. We are always a boundary hitting team but the bowlers bowled fuller and we didn’t do that enough.”
England, SL fined over rate PALLEKELE, SRI LANKA: England and Sri Lanka were fined for slow over rates during their Super Eights group one matches in the World Twenty20 here on Saturday. The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a press release that England were found one over short during their sixwicket win over New Zealand, while Sri Lanka also fell short by the same margin in their nine-wicket win against the West Indies. “Match referee Javagal Srinath imposed the fines after both England and Sri Lanka were ruled to be one over short of their targets at the end of the matches when time allowances were taken into consideration,” said the ICC. In accordance with ICC regulations governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captains fined double that amount. As such, England’s Stuart Broad and Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka were fined 20 per cent of AFP their match fees.
India hope for salvation against Pak Kuldip Lal
COLOMBO: Pakistan will look to extend their dominant form and put India on the brink of elimination when the old foes clash in the World Twenty20 on Sunday. Pakistan have never beaten India in either the 50-over World Cup or the World Twenty20, but Mohammad Hafeez’s men start as favourites in the much-awaited Super Eights game in Colombo. Pakistan are the team in form, winning both matches in the preliminary league before stunning top-ranked South Africa by two wickets in their first Super Eights game on Friday. In contrast, Australia annihilated India by nine wickets later
the same evening, leaving Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men needing to beat Pakistan and South Africa to stay in contention for the semi-finals. But if Australia beat South Africa and Pakistan defeat India in Sunday’s double-header, both winners will advance to the semi-finals from what was billed as the “group of death”. Pakistan seamer Umar Gul, an unlikely hero with the bat against South Africa with a power-packed 32 off 17 balls, said: “When we play India there is lot of pressure because our people always want us to win. “The same is the case in India, so there will be pressure on both teams. “Anything can happen. We will give it our best shot. India is a very good team, but we know
each other’s strong and weak points. In T20 it all depends on how a team plays on that day.” India, winners of the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007, failed to win even one Super Eights game in the next two editions, in England in 2009 and the Caribbean in 2010. Skipper Dhoni, however, put a positive spin on his team’s door-die scenario ahead of the sold-out game at the 35,000capacity Premadasa Stadium. “It is always good to be in a situation where you have to win every game,” he said. “There is no scope for complacency and that is a good thing. You have to be at your best throughout. “Hopefully we can go out and express ourselves without worrying too much about the result,” he added.

Barça squeeze through to victory Barcelona struck twice in the final minutes to complete a fightback as they beat Sevilla 3-2. Tim Hanlon
MADRID: Barcelona (right) struck twice in the final minutes to complete a controversial fightback as they beat 10man Sevilla 3-2 to go eleven points clear of bitter rivals Real Madrid on Saturday. Piotr Trochowski put Sevilla ahead after 26 minutes and when Alvaro Negredo doubled the advantage after the break it looked as though the Andalusians would achieve a double over the top two, having beaten Real a fortnight ago.
However, Barca fought back with Cesc Fabregas reducing the arrears after 53 minutes and then the talking point was the dismissal of Gary Medel for an apparent headbutt on Fabregas which led to him being red-carded with 18 minutes to go. Barca pressed forward and it was Fabregras who equalised with a minute to go before substitute David Villa got the winner in the fourth minute of injury time. Barca coach Tito Vilanova felt it was right to send off
Medel. Malaga maintained their unbeaten start as they cruised to a 4-0 victory over Real Betis with the game turning on an early penalty and the sending off of goalkeeper Casto Espinosa. Casto was red-carded for a foul on Eliseu Pereira and after Joaquin Sanchez converted the penalty, Malaga never looked back. Elsewhere Valencia beat Zaragoza 2-0 and Real Sociedad also came out on top 2-0 against Athletic Bilbao.
Super Spurs stun United It was Tottenham’s first victory at Old Trafford since December 1989. Julian Guyer
MANCHESTER: Gareth Bale scored one goal and set up another as Tottenham beat Manchester United for the first time in 23 Premier League matches with a thrilling 3-2 win on Saturday. Spurs's first victory at Old Trafford since December 1989 saw them twice go two goals in front, with the teams sharing three goals in as many minutes during a frantic spell before the hour mark. United's first home league defeat in 2012 meant Alex Ferguson's side ended the weekend in third place — four points behind leaders Chelsea — while Tottenham climbed to fifth. Just 90 seconds had been played when Spurs' defender Jan Vertonghen burst into the box and fired the visitors in front with a low shot that deflected off Jonny Evans. In the 32nd minute they were 2-0 up when Bale, from just inside the United half, outpaced Rio Ferdinand before his shot beat Anders Lindegaard. United pulled a goal back in the 51st minute when substitute Wayne Rooney provided a cross for Nani to
steer past Brad Friedel. But two minutes later Jermain Defoe left the struggling Ferdinand behind him and found Bale. The Welshman's shot was palmed away by Lindegaard but only to Clint Dempsey, with the United States striker shooting into the empty net. However, United cut the lead to 3-2 moments later when Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa slotted home. Ferguson was furious with referee Chris Foy for only playing four minutes of added-on time at the end of the match. Chelsea remained top as Juan Mata starred in a 2-1 win away to London rivals Arsenal. They are three points ahead of Everton whose promising early season form continued with a 3-1 win over Southampton. Brendan Rodgers enjoyed his first Premier League win as Liverpool manager during a 5-2 win at Norwich that took the Reds out of the bottom three. Meanwhile, reigning champions Manchester City came from behind to win 2-1 at Fulham, with substitute Edin Dzeko scoring the winner.
Bayern make it 6 out of 6 The win took Bayern five points clear of second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. BERLIN: Goals in the final nine minutes from Luis Gustavo and Mario Mandzukic gave Bayern Munich a sixth league win out of six for the new season as the Bavarians cantered to a 2-0 win at Werder Bremen on Saturday. The win took Bayern, seeking to end two years of Borussia Dortmund dominance in the league, five points clear of second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, who host Freiburg on Sunday. Dortmund enjoyed a 5-0 romp over Borussia Moenchengladbach to show that they are back in the groove after dropping seven points in their opening five matches.
Bayern's mean machine once again kept a clean sheet — they have conceded just two goals to date — and Gustavo's 20-metre drive into the top left-hand corner finally broke the deadlock when it looked as if Werder might pinch a point. Elsewhere Saturday, Hanover lost the chance to go joint second after a 1-0 loss in Hamburg, now moving up the table after a poor start. Bayer Leverkusen thanked two quickfire second-half goals from Sidney Sam, their German-born Nigerian, to see off promoted Furth 2-0. The win took Leverkusen joint fourth in the table.

MILAN: Juventus (above) pulled away from Napoli at the top of Italy's Serie A with a 4-1 thrashing of Roma as hosts Parma held a seemingly resurgent AC Milan to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Roma coach Zdenek Zeman had helped stoke the fires in the days leading up to the Juve match with comments on an autobiography by former Serie A player Matias Almeyda which revived Juventus's murky doping past. Juve responded by outclassing the visitors to go three points clear of Napoli ahead of their match Sunday away to third-placed Sampdoria, leaving Roma with two wins from six games. Earlier, AC Milan, who lost several key players in the summer and have made a disastrous start to the season, produced a performance worthy of the 2012 league runners-up against Parma. Despite Milan's domination, Parma scored a 66th minute equaliser from Daniele Galloppa's 66th minute free-kick.
