Police came to the scene and tried to take the corporator and his men into custody who then held a dharna before the police station. Vaikuntham and several of his supporters had come to Begum Bazaar in connection with a drainage pipeline problem. Locals objected to the group going around checking the pipelines and lifting manhole covers. Altercation led to fisticuff and a kind of free-for-all that created
a huge traffic jam in the area. Police came to the scene and tried to take the corporator and his men into custody but they resisted. Alleging police partisan behaviour the corporator and his supporters held a dharna before the police station. ACP Abids division B Limba
Reddy said two cases have been booked and investigation was on. He said policemen have been posted in the area to prevent any possible flare up. Both Vaikuntham and Feelkhana, Begum Bazaar association presidents have filed cross complaints.

Doc held for dowry harassment A doctor working in a private hospital in Khammam has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody after his wife filed a complaint against him. POSTNOON NEWS feedback@postnoon.com

n a first of its kind, a doctor working in a private hospital in Khammam and his parents have been arrested in a dowry-harassment case last week. Inspector Kacheguda, B Koteshwar Rao said the arraigned have been remanded to judicial custody. Dr S Shashidhar, a resident of Barkatpura in Kacheguda married Dr Sandhya, who is a house surgeon in Gandhi Hospital since 2008. According to complaints filed by Dr Sandhya, at the time of marriage her father A.Chennaiah, a businessman living in SR Nagar had given `1 crore in cash, a car valued at `1 lakh, 100 tola of gold and silver and other household articles. But after a few months
the doctor and his parents allegedly began taunting her for bringing less wealth, the inspector said. Recently, she got a seat in medicine collage of Bejapur where she is required to pay `60 lakh. According to the wife, her in-laws refused to arrange for the money and asked her to
get the money from her father. After a while, she decided to seek the help of the law and approached the Kacheguda police to register a complaint against the doctor. On the way, her car dashed against the car of the BJP’s media secretary K Sridhar. She sustained injuries and in the course of helping her get medical help she reportedly told the leader her tragic personal life. The BJP leader, after getting her medical aid, accompanied her to the police station to lodge a f o r m a l complaint against in-laws. Inspector B Koteshwar Rao is investigating the case.
he State Cabinet meeting that is being held today has assumed importance and significance as CM Kiran Kumar Reddy is expected to bring the curtains down on the continuing suspense over the resignation of roads and buildings minister Dharmana Prasada Rao. It might be recalled here that the minister for roads and buildings had submitted his resignation on moral grounds following the CBI naming him in the charge-sheet filed in the disproportionate assets (DA) case of Kadapa MP Jaganmohan Reddy. After his cabinet colleague put in his papers, the CM has been caught ina dilemma on the action to be taken on it. Though the Cabinet meeting gives an opportunity to discuss the Dharma episode, other important issues confronting the State like the acute power crisis, fee reimbursement, the fee structure for the engineering and other professional colleges etc are also expected to come up for a thorough discussion. ast year, we had reported that as a result of Anna Hazare’s campaign, anti-corruption was a popular theme for Ganesh pandals in Hyderabad. More people were calling for the use of eco-friendly materials for making Ganesh idols, so as to prevent pollution of the water bodies on immersion. Patriotism and devotion seemed to be the catchphrases for the season.

A decision on tainted minister in the offing? All eyes are on the State Cabinet meeting, as it is expected that the chief minister will take a decision on minister Dharmana Prasad Rao’s resignation.
2
GHMC needs to address the vendor issue sensitively. While street vendors have a right to make a living, citizens complain of harassment. The GHMC needs to provide jobs and shelter instead of shooing them off the streets.
3
The power crisis is affecting the environment. Diesel generators seem a necessity in these power cut times, but they are polluting the air with fumes and ruining citizens’ health.

TDP chief warns of a scam larger than coalgate. Chandrababu Naidu said that the wanton establishment of SEZs was a larger scam than coalgate for the UPA government.

Senior citizens’ issues get a turn in the spotlight. A mela highlighting issues faced by senior citizens will surely bring some relief for the City’s elderly.
The increasing sale of diesel generators due to the power situation is a worrying trend, as carcinogenic fumes and particulates released are wreaking havoc on the environment and people’s health. FOR REPRESENTATIONAL PURPOSES
RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com
T
he despicable state of our power grids has led to a great open market of generator manufacturers. While this spells good news for enterprises and acts as healthy sign of economic activity, the ever increasing sales of backup power generators can wreak havoc on the environment. A source from a local diesel generator company says with the ever increasing power cuts, diesel generators (small, medium and large with capacities up to 125 kVA) are selling like hot cakes. The growth rate of a local diesel generator manufacturing company that manufactures and sells 10 kVA to 30 kVA diesel generators as well as high-end machines that are capable of producing up to 125 kVA is expected to touch 15 per cent by the end of this financial year. Diesel generators burn diesel to generate power between 120/220 volts and 230/440 volts. The combustion process in the diesel generator releases carcinogenic fumes as exhaust, which has been listed as one of the many causes for lung and bladder cancer. Another source of misery is the continuous power supply required for telecom towers in the City. These towers function on power supplied by DG (diesel generator) sets. It is learnt that some towers function continuously solely on the power supplied by DG sets. Each tower requires 3-4 kW per site to function. According to TRAI findings, in 2011 alone, a total of 8,760 litres of diesel fuel was consumed. Not considering the subsidies that are paid to the telecom companies for diesel
charges, the amount spent by the government exchequer is simply huge. Unlike in other metros, some people claim there is no nexus between discoms and diesel generators manufacturers that allow rampant power cuts in order to boost generator sales, or so the sources claim. But however, the astounding growth in the number of diesel generators is a cause for worry as environmentalists fret about its many effects. And shockingly, there is no check over their emissions, which contain aerosols and other particulate matter like soot, sulfates and silicates. The hapless pollution board claimed ignorance over any knowledge about diesel generator emissions as their beat lay in ambient air qualities and not particular fuel emissions. While the Bharat Emission Standards are constantly being updated to be on par with the European emission standards, the design and specifications of
The pollution board claims ignorance about diesel generator emissions as they only monitor ambient air quality. the generator sets too are being updated. However, this is leading to an excess leftover of noncompliant generator stock that cannot be sold openly. The next emission standard update will occur in 2013 so generator manufacturers are looking to dispose off the older, non-compliant ones in the market as soon as possible. J Geetha Krishnan, environmentalist and social activist says, “There has been a five-fold increase in the number of asthma cases. But we cannot point fingers directly at DG manufacturers but the fact that the APPCB is not monitoring emission levels, especially that of
diesel emissions, is unsettling. Atleast let us hope that the Central Pollution Control Board is fair in issuing licenses to DG manufacturing companies, otherwise we are all doomed.” On inquiry, Dr KV Ramani of the APPCB said, “We do not monitor diesel generator emissions particularly. We monitor ambient air quality and its everyday changes in gas levels.” Kabeer Singhania, a paediatrician, too agrees that there has been a rise in asthma cases. “And it has not been confined to adult smokers who tend to develop asthma or TB. What is worrying is that there is a rise in the number of cases among children, who seem to be affected by the quality of air in the city.” A 2011 report shows that the total number of people who developed TB or asthma was a shocking 1.12 lakh that year, of which 4 per cent were children. Paediatricians add that the number of asthma patients that they treat has gone up by five times, in atleast a week.

he TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu believes a scam greater than the coalgate awaits the UPA in the wanton establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Naidu said the Congress-led UPA had made criminal exploitation of nation’s common wealth for the leaders’ personal gain. He said the SEZ is one vehicle it uses to plunder the country’s wealth. “The Congress has no moral right to continue in power.” Naidu was interacting with the media when he made the remark. He said that few people know that the CAG had indeed given an interim report on the UPA scam that totaled `1.86 lakh crore in the 142 coal block allotments after the `1.76 lakh crore spectrum scam. “Where will all this lead the country to?” he wanted to know. MLAs P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Tummala NageshwarRao and Veera Venkataiah were among those who met the minister. They requested him to make an announcement clearing the doubts parents had. The Elders Mela will help senior citizens access facilities and products that are essential for them.

W
ith the positive response generated by the ‘Elders Mela’ last year, the organising committee has decided to include more services this time round. The three day Elder’s Mela is going to be held from September 29 to October 1 at Zoroastrian Club. On the occasion of the “International Day of Older Persons” on October 1, the Federation of AP senior citizens Organisations (FAPSCO), HelpAge India, APSCON, Fedhap, Aasara, GHMC and department of senior citizens welfare will be organising Elders
Mela-2012. Social organisations working for the welfare of elders came up with the idea of holding a mela for them with the aim to improve their standards of living and quality of life. Dr Rao VBJ Chelikani, convenor, organising committee explained that the mela will cater to senior citizens’ needs. Raza Mohammed, joint director, HelpAge pointed out that most of the elders were pushed to poverty and had lost most of their financial securities. This also meant that many senior citizens had lost access to medical benefits, which is why the mela will also organise a medical camp. The highlight of the mela however, will be that it will guide senior citizens towards self-sustainable employment opportunities. Fedhap member, S Sunil Kumar explained that various hospitals and pharma companies were supporting the Mela to reach out to a maximum number of elders. According to him, free medicine will also be provided at stalls. The cause is being supported by doctors, said NM Rajeshwari, president, Thodu Needa. Elders will also be provided legal aid for any problems that they face and have access to nutritional experts. The mela will be inaugurated by Governor ESL Narasimhan and will have actors like Murli Mohan and Tanikella Bharani visit.

Vending problems While street vendors have a right to make a living, the GHMC must create vendor zones and provide them accommodation rather than leaving them to roam about the roads, creating a traffic hazard. DEEPAK DESHPANDE

H
yderabad is all set to host the biodiversity meet scheduled to begin on October 1. The City is getting a makeover. But an issue that escaped the official eye is the nuisance street vendors cause at busy traffic junctions. They not only cross the streets making drivers jittery but are also argumentative. “When the signal turns green and it’s our turn to drive, we
have to be cautious. The street vendors don’t move and when we ask them to, they argue with us. Their children, who are on the streets, also become a cause for worry,” said Nipun Shah, businessman. People from all over come to Hyderabad and sell products like electric mosquito bats, balloons and glow-inthe-dark stickers on the roads. That they litter the road is another complaint. “At traffic signals, we have to wait for one and half minutes and the whole area is dirty. They
leave leftovers and wrappers strewn around. It’s an eyesore,” said Krishnaveni Bhaskar, a school teacher. A few areas where they are found are Begumpet, SP road, Jubilee check post, Paradise, Khairatabad and Nalakunta. The law, however, says it is helpless. In the last few months, more than 50 cases have been booked against the vendors. “We have booked cases but it does not work. The GHMC needs to give them shelter with a permanent job. Only then will
this menace stop,” said KM Madhu, ACP Traffic – II. Some female commuters have complained of harassment. “I travel by a twowheeler to work and every day, on my way back, a particular street seller tries to touch me. He has tried to do this several times,” said Kamalam V, sales executive. Sometimes, it’s the other way round. “I was shocked when I saw a few boys in a car troubling a young lady who was selling some toys on the road. My auto driver got into a fight with those boys, but we had to leave,” said Aishwarya S, an IT employee. GHMC officials say they have major plans to solve the issue. “We are doing our bit but now we need to strictly implement better rules to stop sellers at the traffic signals,” said Dr D Shalini Devi, CMOH, GHMC. But the vendors have their own troubles. “We come here leaving our village to make a living. We don’t trouble any one and a few people do make fun of us but they are the majority and there is nothing we can do,” said Sadna T, a vendor. She adds, “The police threaten us, but we are not doing anything illegal.”

A tryst with fine whisky AMY ROSE THOMAS amyrose.t@postnoon.com
S
andeep Arora has a job every man dreams of. He is the certified ambassador of whisky, introducing India to the concept of rare whiskies. In the City to host an evening of whisky appreciation at Taj Krishna, Sandeep Arora talks about his tryst with the beverage. “Ours is a whisky-drinking nation. We drink about 200 million cases of whisky every year but we had been drinking it just as whisky and were unaware of the various types available. But for the last decade or so, there has been a change. There are people who drink private labels, single malts, bourbon, scotch whisky, Japanese whisky. In India now,
eight out of 10 people cannot tell you which wine they want to drink but they know which whisky they want,” he says. After working in the corporate world, Sandeep moved to the field of rare whiskies 10 years ago. “In 2002, I wanted to move out of the corporate environment and get into luxury spirits. I
opted for providing experiences. Rare whiskies are those which are older, limited in quantity and very expensive. I introduced rare whisky into the Indian market which cost around `20,000 to `40,000 a peg. By then, I had realised that people in India were looking for unique experiences all the time,” he says. He disagrees with the notion that whisky is a gentleman’s drink and says there are many women who are whisky drinkers. “I don’t disagree that gentlemen drink whisky, but one cannot classify and create such an impression. I co-own India’s first women’s whisky club and there are 94 members. Around 30 per cent of the single malts in the world two years ago was drunk by women,” he says.

REPORTERS’ DIARY
Great beautification, GHMC! DEEPAK DESHPANDE
S
o, we were right, after all. We have indicated in these columns how the GHMC managers are making a motion of beautification for the world biodiversity conference in October. Here, seen in picture (right), are the hired hands hard at work, first pulling out a well-nurtured grass carpet strip of the divider on Rd No 36, and then re-fixing them with a few earthen pots placed in between. Great job! And, tax-payers in the City would love to see the bill the contractors produced — just to know how much of their hard-earned dough has flown down the Musi river, you know. And, citizens report that similar ‘grand’ works (or handiworks?) are undertaken in various parts of the City. Well-meaning people of this historical place had pointed out that fundamental works like solid waste treatment and ban on littering are what the City requires, not rouge on its cheeks. But, then, when did the money-makers ever listen to sane voice? PK
AH... IT’S OUR PROBLEM
At a recent celebration that highlighted the importance of renewable energy sources, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy had an embarrassing moment. During the course of his speech, the CM

acted on an impulse and asked the audience comprising chiefly school children, “Does anybody here suffer from a power-cut every day? Be honest and raise your hand.” Most of the children present, probably thinking it a credit to say ‘aye’ when the CM demanded, raised their hands with gusto. Surprised at the vast sea of hands up, the red faced CM quickly tried to lighten the situation and remarked, “Ah... I see only one hand, and in all probability, he has just raised it idly.” What the CM said to the electricity officials afterward is not recorded. It is a fact that the City has been subjected to scheduled and unscheduled power-cuts for
long. But many well heeled people use generators and their kids may not know the gravity of the situation. But it was surely a difficult moment for the ruler of the State to feel the heat. Children do not lie, they say. RR
ters worse, half the staff in the building is unaware of their colleagues’ whereabouts at any given point of time. It was later learnt that the reporter gave the prankster quite a earful, privately. RR
IDLERS AT GHMC
WHAT A CARE, CITY FATHERS!
The next time you visit the GHMC head office beware of idlers who are on payroll but kill time indulging in pranks. A reporter spent more than two hours looking for an additional commissioner in all its six floors because the mischievous character in the office misguided the reporter by giving him wrong information. And to make mat-
Talk of the world leaders coming over here. They will be carrying great memories of the historical City, indeed. Here, our lensmen clicked a picture of the big board placed right in front of the Zilla Parishad, Khairatabad, which proclaims an event of the hoary past! Afro-Asian Games that took place in 2003!
It is proverbial to note that every crisis produces its own leader. But in the political context the leaders transform the crisis into opportunity. The TDP a few days ago locked the gate of GHMC as a novel protest against the corporation’s failure to attend to the pitiable condition of the roads and other amenities. They were too many and the security men were hapless. But the locking of the gate proved a blessing for some employees who watched the drama and returned home pleading they could not enter. Well, if they were daily wagers, could they have done it? Asks a wit. Protests are taking curious turns. On Wednesday a TDP activist tied himself in electric wires to protest against the power crisis. It helps the media to shed tedium, you know, and we welcome them. is ‘gundayism’ is evident only in agitations his party takes up. Or else, his ancestral name, ‘Gunda’ is an embarrassment which he conceals in a ‘G.’ A communist to the core and the floor leader of Communist Party of India (CPI) in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Gunda Mallesh, needs no introduction in the State. “Many, like the layman’s hatred for the actor playing villain role in cinema, dreaded me initially,” recalls Mallesh with a laugh. He knows many who have not met him have a vision of a muscleman who is best avoided. “Many people get frightened when they first hear his surname. But their fear turns into joy when they meet him,” vouchesafed a
close friend. Mallesh’s career spans over four and half decades and he is known for his social work. With his aggressive agitation for the downtrodden, he has attained a ‘hero’ status in Adilabad and in
his constituency, Bellampalli. Mallesh is an open man, and a champion of the backward, which is one reason for him getting elected four times. But he swears that politics, especially the communist politics, has made him poorer and he regrets getting into politics for one reason. Hear his own voice, “I did not get time to look after my children due to social service. Earlier, I did not have any regrets getting into the vortex of politics but now I do regret that I could not attend to my children’s education and see them in high positions in life. I was working as Coal Filler in Singarenni Collieries Company (SCCL) Private Limited. If I had not joined politics, I’d have retired as an under manager in SCCL and with a comfortable `50 lakh. also a renowned communist trade union leader of Adilabad district. His inspiration to get into politics was the freedom fighter Gangaram of Adilabad. And, Mallesh will give 100 per cent marks to his ‘home minister’ — his wife G Saroja, who too is a red leader and still managed to maintain the family when he had little time for it. Mallesh is no great orator, his admirers say, but he is sincere. As floor leader of his party he compensates his lack for the gift of the gab by his attitude and aggressiveness in taking up public issues. Mallesh’s memorable experience in life is providing a source of drinking water to thousands of people of his districts in his political career. He has humble ambitions. “I want Adilabad to get a medical college,” he signs off.

Being an engineer by education and by profession, he always found it difficult to handle financial matters. It is more a mental block than the capability to understand or deal with finances. He came to me to understand the home loan process. Abhi: A lot of the banks advertise that the home loan will be processed, sanctioned and made available within a week or 10 days. Is it so simple? Nicky: Abhi, that's what they say. But you have to be realistic. It's not so simple. You first need to get a whole lot of documents in place like your recent bank statements, salary slips and job offer letter, Form 16 issued by the company, passport sized photographs,
to begin with, to the customer. They do not check the documents properly and take it from the customer. If they did, they would know that the photo in the ID proof is not clear and hence the loan processing officer will not clear the file. Or, the amounts in the bank statements showing the down payment to the builder do not add up to at least 20 per cent of the value of the
property. Once they collect the cheque for the processing fees, their motivation to help you is lost. So they keep coming back to you and asking for more and more documents. And they will always justify by saying that the 'regulations have changed'. Abhi: This is de-motivating. If the process is so tiresome, why would anyone take a home loan? Nicky: Do you have any other choice? Can you get a loan from somewhere else? Well, the answer is No. For most of us. So, whether we like it or not, we are stuck with this system. And then look at it this way, after you get the loan, you will be the owner of your dream house. So keep your cool. Patience is the key. You will get your loan. Abhi: That's true. How about the interest rates and the EMI? Nicky: Ah that! Can we do it later? I have a class now... The writer is a senior researcher, Centre for Investment, ISB, Hyderabad

Bing added a feature on Thursday that lets people search through photos friends posted on Facebook. The Facebook photo search feature was available at bing.com/friendsphotos. In May, Microsoft began weaving data from users' Facebook friends into Bing results as part of the biggest revamp of the search engine since its launch three years ago. The new version of Bing introduced a "social sidebar" that lists Facebook friends who may know something about a query topic. In a move appearing shrewdly visionary, Microsoft in late 2007 paid what seemed an exorbitant $240 million for a 1.6 per cent stake in Facebook.

TV inspires girl to help nab criminal PATNA: A teenaged girl saved herself and another girl from the clutches of human traffickers in the Bihar capital after she sensed trouble, thanks to scenes she recalled from her favourite Hindi TV serial on crime investigation, police said Friday. Police arrested Mohd Shahjahan and his wife Suman Thursday on charges of human trafficking and recovered Salma Khatoon and Ayesha Bano (changed names) from their clutches. "I saved myself and another girl of my age after raising an alarm. I grew suspicious after hearing Shahjahan speaking to someone on the phone and telling the person at the other end to strike a deal for us," said Salma, 16.
Salma told IANS that she remembered a scene from the TV serial CID and cried out for help, leading to her rescue. Salma told IANS that she remembered a scene from the TV serial CID when she overheard the phone conversation. "I started crying loudly in the park, and requested people around to protect us and inform the police. That worked in our favour," Salma said. Salma, who hails from a village in UP and Ayesha, who belongs to a village in Bihar's Gaya district, were lured by Shahjahan, who promised to marry one of them and help the other get a job. Both Salma and Ayesha told police that they left their homes because they were angry with their families. IANS

RECOGNITION FOR INNOVATION
Indian ryots get global kudos Aresearch unearthed, for the first time, the scale at which enterprising farmers are themselves using their own resources innovatively rather than waiting for water to be delivered.
C
iting examples from West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, a Stockholm-based water management institute has said that small-scale irrigation schemes could protect millions of farmers from food insecurity and climate risks. The report by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), titled ‘Water for wealth and food security: Supporting farmer-driven investments in agricultural water management’; was released at the ongoing World Water Week in Stockholm yesterday. According to the report, expanding the use of on-farm water management techniques could increase yields up to 300 per cent in some cases, and add tens of billions of US dollars to household revenues across subSaharan Africa and South Asia. Researchers looked at these trends in six countries, including in India’s West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, a press release from IWMI said. Tushaar Shah of IWMI said: “When farmers and those who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods are at the mercy of global food prices, water scarcity can have tragic impacts. But Indian farmers are increasingly tapping local, small-scale solutions for their water needs to great success.”
The three-year AgWater Solutions Research Initiative unearthed for the first time the scale at which enterprising small-holder farmers themselves are driving this revolution by using their own resources innovatively rather than waiting for water to be delivered, the release said. “What surprises us is not just the pace of change but how widespread it has been,” Ravinder Malik, who coordinated the initiative in Madhya Pradesh, said. “Farmers themselves are taking up this challenge—find-

gy,” he said. In Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas District, for instance, more than 7,000 water harvesting structures have been built by farmers on their own land and with their own financial resources within a period of less than 4 years. The district administration however provided logistical support and facilitated construction of these structures, the release said. The research, a collaborative effort involving several international partners and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, provides the best
evidence to-date on the scale and potential economic benefits of small-holder water management in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The report cites the example of innovative farmer Raghunath Singh from Harnavada in Dewas District in Madhya Pradesh. A steep decline in local water tables had led to a spate of tubewell failures. His farm was badly affected, but he took the initiative and was the first person in the district to construct a private rain water harvesting pond on his farm, the release said. Singh’s success catalysed the development of more private rainwater harvesting structures in the district as other farmers enthusiastically adopted the new approach. Singh was so pleased with his new reservoir, and so determined to encourage others, that he organised a big “funeral” procession for his tubewell. Malik said: “The solutions for effective water management are already with us. Cheap pumps and new ways of powering them are changing how Indians farm and how much revenue their crops generate. “Even drilling wells more quickly and capturing rainwater more effectively can make a difference during the dry season.” PTI
ABUSE OF POWER
Chandigarh stays ‘disturbed’ A reason the bureaucracy here does not want the tag to be removed is that even if posted out of Chandigarh they can retain their government accommodation in the disturbed area and enjoy other benefits. CHANDIGARH: The threat of militancy ended years ago but Chandigarh continues to be tagged a ‘disturbed area’ — thanks to the bureaucracy that wants it to be kept this way for its own benefits. The ‘disturbed area’ tag was given to Chandigarh, a union territory and the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, in 1983 during the years of militancy in Punjab (1981-1992). This was done to give special powers to the administration and the police and security forces to effectively deal with militancy. Punjab, however, shed the ‘disturbed area’ tag in 1997.
Since Punjab was mostly under President’s rule during that time, Chandigarh was also brought under the purview of the Punjab governor by making him the UT administrator. But nearly two decades after
militancy was wiped out of Punjab and with no major terror incident taking place in Chandigarh after 1995, the city continues to be a ‘disturbed area’. The matter is now under the
purview of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which admonished the Chandigarh administration for dragging its feet on removing the tag. A bench orally remarked that the bureaucracy did not want the label to go as it suited its interests. It pointed out that officials posted in Chandigarh were clearly taking advantage of the label to serve their interests. One reason the bureaucracy here does not want the tag to be removed is that even if posted out of Chandigarh they can retain their government accommodation in the disturbed area
and enjoy other benefits, an official in the UT administration told IANS. The high court bench has now given the administration three weeks to file its reply on why Chandigarh continues to be designated a ‘disturbed area’. Sources in the administration say it had written to the central government to take off the ‘disturbed area’ tag from Chandigarh but no notification has been issued so far. The high court took up the issue after Surinder Bhardwaj, a Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader here, filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in January. IANS

Mitt accepts Republican nod with jobs pitch
Romney's speech offered many personal attacks and gauzy platitudes, but no tangible ideas to move the country forward, said Obama camp. TAMPA: Mitt Romney vowed to rescue the US economy and create jobs on Thursday as he accepted the Republican presidential nomination at the climax of a convention that sought to humanise the candidate. “What is needed in our country today is not complicated or profound. It doesn’t take a special government commission to tell us what America needs,” Romney said in his prime-time pitch. “What America needs is jobs. Lots of jobs.” The former Massachusetts governor told Americans that Barack Obama had singularly failed to deliver the “hope and change” he had promised and that the country must elect him to save an economy crippled by wrong-headed policies. “Our problem is not that he is a bad person, our problem is that he is a bad president,” Florida Senator Marco Rubio agreed as part of a barnstorming introduction to Romney. Romney’s elevation to official challenger to Obama in the November election comes more than five long years after he launched his first White House bid and with the current race neck-and neck and dependent on a handful of key states. The convention injects momentum into the campaign as Romney slingshots out of Tampa on a 10-week dash across battleground states like Florida, Ohio, Virginia and Colorado — which could decide the race. Olympians, Clint help Republicans party night away
AFP
TAMPA: The dancing started long before Mitt Romney took the stage, as jubilant Republicans launched a premature celebration, hoping they had picked the right man to oust Barack Obama from the White House in November. The crowd was clearly in a party mood: Some waving American flags, or wearing red, white and blue sequins, others sporting cowboy hats as they cavorted in the cavernous red, white and blue festooned hall. For the crowd of more than 4,000 delegates in the cavernous convention center, amid the frenzied chanting and cheering, there was one clear conviction: the millionaire businessman and former Massachusetts governor was their man. For many, a high point was Hollywood actor and director Clint Eastwood, who obliged the crowd with a recitation of his signature line from hit film Dirty Harry — which they actually finished for him “Go ahead, make my day!” He followed a group of American Olympians, whose presence was designed to remind voters that the candidate had saved the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City from financial ruin. However, the event was not without incident. Romney’s speech was interrupted briefly by three protesters, two women and one man. Delegates immediately started chanting “USA! USA!” to drown them out before they were removed by security officers. AFP

Court overturns Texas voter ID law WASHINGTON: A US court overturned a law Thursday requiring Texans to present photo identification to vote, saying it could marginalize poor and minority voters two months before presidential elections. The controversial electoral law had been suspended by US President Barack Obama’s administration on the grounds that it would encourage racial discrimination in the electoral process. The court ruled that the Republican-led southern state provided evidence that was “unpersuasive, invalid or both” in its effort
to show the election law did not discriminate against ethnic minority voters. “That law will almost certainly have retrogressive effects: it imposes strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor, and racial minorities in Texas are disproportionately likely to live in poverty,” the three federal judges presiding over the court ruled. The ruling came as a blow to the state’s Republican governor, Rick Perry, rejecting his 2011 law presented as a tool to fight electoral fraud.

German youth down on Euro NOTES FROM EUROPE
Siobhan Dowling
P
atrick Radmacher sips tea in the leafy courtyard of central Berlin’s Humboldt University. The crisis gripping much of euro zone seems far away from this quiet corner of the German capital where the 24-year-old history student is taking a break from his work in the library. Young Germans aren’t facing the kind of bleak future and unemployment confronting their counterparts in Greece and Spain. Nevertheless, he says the crisis worries him and his friends deeply. “It’s the largest issue facing this generation.” That’s because prosperous Germany must shoulder the lion's share of the burden if the euro is to be saved. Many German youth appear to take the European Union for granted or, increasingly, view it negatively. Their voices could become an important factor as the deepening euro crisis continues to slow Germany’s prodigious economic growth ahead of elections next year. Susanne Karstedt, an official in the city of Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart, says getting young people to stop taking the EU for granted requires teaching them about the effort that went into post-war European integration. “Many young people can’t begin to imagine what a long path it was for earlier generations,” she says. That’s a critical lesson at a time German politicians are facing a tough balancing act between responding to public opinion and trying to forestall the euro’s collapse, something many believe would set back the EU project for decades.
HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTS We at HFT, like the Anonymous Alien skulking below us, love a good law suit. So when we heard that the US was planning on suing the former SEAL who blew the whistle on what went on during the Osama raid. It speaks volumes when a country has to sue its own soldiers. Now that’s something out of a Good Wife episode.

O
h, how I love a good law suit! Hit my car? You’re getting sued. Write something nasty about me? Big-time law suit. Your kid bullies mine? Sue! Sue! Sue! Well, at least that’s how it is in the United States. And it’s fantastic. It’s heaven. It’s even inspirational. Now I know what you’re thinking: who wants to live in a country where everyone sues everyone? And the answer is: you do! You know why security deposits on rental properties are four, five, even 10 months of rent in India? In large part, it’s because if the tenant stops paying rent, or trashes the place, the landlord has no real legal option. Law suits are just not viable in a country with a 15year backlog on court cases and systemically corrupt judges. What are the ramifications of this? Landlords let apartment buildings get run-down, because tenants are so on the hook to their landlords that it’s almost impossible to leave and secure a new apartment. You know why many brilliant Indian innovators immigrate to the United States to set up world-beating software and Internet companies? Because if they create intellectual property here, in India, they have no functioning courts in which to
enforce copyrights, trademarks and patents. Without the threat of that enforcement, their ideas are subject to theft and their products subject to proliferation before they’ve had a legitimate change to monetise them. You want to know why, at least in part, that 49 of the top 100 brands in the world are from the United States, with roughly 4 per cent of the world’s population, and ZERO are from India, with roughly 18 per cent of the world’s population? It’s in large part because the US is probably the easiest place to sue someone and get rapid (and, in general, fair) results; and India is one of the hardest. Several years ago, I belonged to a prestigious club in Mumbai. Each day, when I would swim in the club’s pool, I had to plead with the lifeguard to sit in the sun, where he could
see me swimming and save me if I needed help, instead of in the shade, where he was far more comfortable but couldn’t see me or help me if I started to drown. Do you get this? I had to plead with a lifeguard to do his job, and the club itself didn’t really care if he did his job, because if he didn’t, and something bad happened to me, there was no way me or my family would ever recover one rupee from them in a negligence law suit. Law suits and the threat of law suits, force people to behave. They force people and companies to proactively think about proper conduct, safety and the risks of stealing intellectual property. Without law suits, and the threat of law suits, landlords trample on tenants, content producers have their ideas and productions stolen
almost the moment they are released to the public, companies struggle with how to protect their patents, trademarks and copyrights and clubs don’t take the safety of their guests seriously. It’s no fun getting sued. It’s actually no fun suing someone. But law suits are a necessary part of a functioning democracy, and if India is ever going to take its place as a global leader and supporter of capitalism and democracy, it’s going to need to clean up its courts and dramatically expand the court system. So, someday soon, I hope to see you in court. A foreigner’s observations on living, working, surviving and thriving in India. You can reach The Anonymous Alien at AnonymousAlieninIndia@ gmail.com
EDITORIALS Why a Romney presidency is good for India
T
he world was star-struck the day Barack Obama came to the White House. Everyone from India to Japan and Palestine believed that change was just around the corner. A smart, humane man had become leader of the world’s most powerful nation. Four years on and the Obama dream lies not so much in tatters but creased and ruffled. Sure he has been hamstrung by Republicans who are hell-bent on thwarting every reform, but his bipartisan agenda has left him boxing with one arm tied behind his back. There’s a good chance that Mitt Romney will win in November, and as Indians we should breathe a sigh of relief. Romney will be good for us, he’ll outsource the hell of the good ol’ US of A. Considering he’s said that if elected he’d label China a currency manipulator, there’s a good chance that all those American jobs will come to these shores. Romney, aided and abetted by his rabidly fanatical party, will dismantle America socially, and culturally. Bad for them...good for us.

t’s been 15 years since Diana was killed in in Paris. But through her two sons her legacy continues to thrive. Ironically, it is in Harry that her spirit is most palpable. OK not because he gets his kit off at the drop of a billiards ball but because Harry rages against the monarchic machine. His unfettered love of life is a kin to his mother’s; his smiles is rarely forced and there is a sprite constantly dancing in his eyes. His mum would have him by the ears for his antics, but she’d have understood.

Rhythm Nation THE INSIDE STORY
WHILE ON TOUR
Why Hyderabad doesn’t make the cut
Hyderabadis have always had to watch with envy as their favourite bands toured other cities, played and left. We find out where the city falls short RAHUL RAMAKRISHNA rahul.r@postnoon.com
A
t a recent concert, where an international band was flown in to play, things did not go as expected. Let us not take names but it is enough to say the alternative rock band, a big name on international circuit was asked to play in a resort. Not just any resort, but one that was located on the city’s farthest edges. But what good is any resort without teeming with families and children. So there it was, the band which included haughty vocalists and even haughtier stage crew, a confused set of event organisers running around the lawns and yes, the aforemen-
tioned families. But you have to admit it, we Hyderabadis love our bands. Over a thousand people turned up to hear the band play and by the time the band opened stage, there was alcohol and other organic intoxicants flowing freely typical of any rock gig. This perhaps is the only saving grace ,that the youth know how to come out in support of their favourites, even if it means travelling 45 kilometers out of the city, to watch a band play in a resort. “There are many venues where the rock junta can turn up in full swing. I remember when Durgam Cheruvu, Nizam college grounds and Hitex were the hotspots for gigs a couple of years back. But asking a band to play in a resort and asking people to travel
all the way, especially us Hyderabadis, is a bad idea,” says Vivek Sagar, a musician and guitar player. Varun Venugopal, bass player shares the sentiment, albeit a little strongly. “The
“We had so many experiences of people walking up to the stage and asking us to play Hindi film numbers.” organisers should think about what crowd they are catering to. It is definitely a bad idea, as bad as asking them to play in a hotel would have been,” he says. They go on to reminisce, “ We had so many experiences of people walk-
ing up to the stage and asking us to play Hindi film numbers. At metal concerts, middle aged ladies would wonder if there was something wrong with the vocalist, who very obviously, was in his own element,” says Varun. Both Vivek and Varun used to play in a local band. But some folks quite liked the concert. “ I’ve been a big fan of this band and in love with their latest album. There was no way I could miss them but I’d have preferred them playing in the city than in a resort out in the wilderness,” said Deepti K, a spectator. So there you have it, while fandom runs high, the venues are a letdown. You surely wouldn’t expect Metallica or Madonna to play in a dhaba. Or it might just happen. You never know.
Demands of rockstars Ozzy Osbourne insists on an eye, ear, nose and throat doctor at each venue. The Beach Boys require a licensed masseur, meat loaf a mask and a tank of oxygen. Paul McCartney must have a large arrangement of white Casablanca lilies in his dressing room. Mick Jagger must have an onstage autocue with the lyrics to all the songs, telling him the name of the city they were performing in.

BIBLIOMANIA
19
Are you a bibliomaniac?
Many of us can be categorised as bibliophiles, people who love reading books. When this love starts to interfere in our daily lives and becomes an obsession it’s bibliomania. ANISHAA KUMAR anishaa.k@postnoon.com
B
ooks... for many people books can bring a smile on their face no matter how bad a day or a situation. But over the years certain cases have come forward where this love for books is more than just a hobby. Bibliomania has been defined as an ‘exaggerated preoccupation of collecting books.’ What differentiates this from any other book lover is that the person just collects the book and rarely reads them.
Talking about a particular reason for these symptoms, Dr Minhaj says, “It could be an aspect of OCD. On trying to find out about the cause a patient had told me that he doesn’t like anyone else reading the book before he does. He basically does not want any second hand book.”
What makes people assume a connection between OCD and these symptoms is the aspect of hoarding. Hoarding is one of the common symptoms of OCD. Hoarding is usually referred to as collecting large amounts of a particular type of an object and the unwillingness to discard it
even if it starts interfering in ones life. According to Dr Minhaj, “These type of patients get anxious when someone takes away the books from him, tries to sell them off or if someone else reads his book before them.” Like other forms of OCD, this obsession starts interfering in their
day to day life and may effect their social interaction. As this is not a particular ailment per se but when it comes to such symptoms in patients Dr Minhaj says that the doctors may prescribe patients drugs for anxiety and will also counsel them regarding this habit.
SYMPTOM OR AILMENT? Although not recognised as a psychiatric illness by the associations of psychiatrists, the term has been used many times and symptoms of bibliomania have been noticed in patients suffering from various psychiatric ailments. According to Dr Minhaj Nasirabadi, consultant psychiatrist, Apollo hospital, “I have noticed such symptoms in a few of my patients suffering from schizophrenia and obsessivecompulsive disorder. Some patients have been seen who want to know about a particular topic and keep on buying books about it. There could be some other types in which people just collect books and do not read them or just read a few pages and then keep them aside. This troubles their families as well as they keep on piling books and do not let others touch them.”

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Genital herpes affects the skin or mucous membranes of the genitals and is usually spread from one person to another during sexual contact. HSV-2 most often causes genital herpes. HSV-2 can be spread through secretions from the mouth or genitals. HSV-1 usually affects the mouth and lips and causes cold sores or fever blisters.

RESEARCH
STUDY
Junk food could also damage brain: study
Thumbs down to chocolate, red wine Despite claims that chocolate and red wine might work wonders for health, recent studies suggest that there is no proof for the same. LONDON: There is no proof to show that chocolate and red wine protect the heart, even though a study has suggested that they lower cardiac risk by 37 per cent, say scientists. This was only a ‘sign’, however, and not proof because of the flawed nature of the study, said Steffen Desch from the University of Leipzig Heart Centre in Germany. He said a more conclusive trial could be difficult because the real thing would have to be tested against a ‘dummy’ substance that looked and tasted like chocolate. Some small studies have claimed that chocolate lowers blood pressure and reduces inflammation in the body. But Desch is unconvinced, the Daily Mail reports. “Despite the studies, I couldn’t yet recommend dark chocolate as a prevention or treatment in cardiovascular disease,” he said. “There’s no strong evidence of a benefit and no clear explanation of an effective mechanism.” The calories contained in chocolate are likely to offset any protection to the heart, he said. His reservations came as
Dutch researchers dampened down speculation about the benefits of red wine on the heart. Any benefit from moderate consumption of red wine is
likely to be small and outweighed by the adverse effects of drinking too much, scientists say. Even though it is also sup-
posed to help heart health, there is no single ingredient which appears to work, they said. They have tested resveratrol, which is found in the skin of red grapes touted as having a range of life-enhancing properties. Eric Sijbrands of Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam led a series of studies which failed to replicate the findings of heart benefits from taking resveratrol. Using it in capsules for four weeks did not lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension, he said. “Certainly, I would never actively prescribe red wine for a heart condition and, even if I was asked about it, I would be cautious,” he added. If red wine does work, the explanation is likely to be ‘complex’, he said. Any benefit from moderate consumption is likely to be small and outweighed by the adverse effects of drinking too much. These findings were presented at the European Congress of Cardiology in Munich. IANS
LONDON: Obesity-inducing junk food could also give you dementia through high blood pressure and cholesterol, which interrupt blood supply to the brain, says a study. Some animal studies have specifically implicated insulin, a hormone, suggesting that Alzheimer’s could be ‘diabetes of the brain’. But the latest theory also points to high levels of fatty and sugary food damaging the brain by interrupting its supply of insulin. In type 2 diabetes, junk food prompts our cells in becoming resistant to the insulin they need to convert sugar into energy. Insulin is required to regulate brain chemicals, key to memory and learning, to make and strengthen connections between brain cells and to maintain the blood vessels that supply the brain with blood and oxygen, the journal New Scientist reports. The study suggests that something similar may be happening in Alzheimer’s, with a bad diet preventing brain cells from responding properly to insulin. Rats developed Alzheimer’s after being fed a compound that prevented their brains from using insulin. Suzanne de la Monte, study co-author from Brown University, US, said: “They were demented. They couldn’t learn or remember.” When researchers fed healthy men and women fatty and sugary foods for a month, levels of insulin and beta amyloid rose. With rates of diabetes soaring, dementia could be reaching ‘epidemic’ proportions. The Alzheimer’s Society’s director of research, professor Clive Ballard said: “One in three people over 65 will develop dementia. Research like this points us in new directions for treatment development.” IANS
BREAKTHROUGH
Brazil spider’s venom could help in man’s sexual life LONDON: A group of scientists from Brazil and the US has found that the venom from what is considered the world’s deadliest spider could be the secret to boosting a man’s love life. Toxins produced by the Brazilian Wandering Spider, or Phoneutria nigriventer, appear to combat erectile dysfunction
within 20 minutes of entering the body, Daily Mail reported. Tests carried out on rats show the venom boosts performance by increasing the release of nitric oxide, a chemical that dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. This is similar to how existing impotence drugs work.
One in ten men in Britain suffers erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives. The researchers extracted the toxin — PnTx2-6 — from the deadly venom and then injected it into rats having age-related erectile dysfunction. It was found that the toxin boosted erections by triggering the
release of nitric oxide, which boosts circulation in the male genitals by helping blood vessel walls relax. In a report in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, the researchers said: “The decrease in erectile function associated with age was partially restored 15 to 20 minutes after injection with PnTx2-6.” IANS

Entertainment MISSES THE MARK
Srimannarayana is over the top HEMANTH KUMAR hemanth.k@postnoon.com
S
rimannarayana is yet another example of how an actor’s image overshadows the basic content of the film and what it could have been. Directed by Ravikumar Chavali, the film has Balakrishna as a daring TV journalist with a golden heart. Right from his introduction scene till the last frame, he’s portrayed as the desi version of Superman, who’s extremely powerful and intelligent. Since we have been nurtured to take suspense of belief for granted, what really hinders the film from what it could have been is the dumbing down of the film’s content and screenplay. Srimannarayana (Balakrishna) is a daring and dashing journalist who exposes a scam which puts a minister and his acolytes in trouble. Srimannarayana’s father is extremely proud of his son’s achievements and one fine day, he comes up with a plan to collect funds to help the farmers. Within a short span of time, the fund grows up to Rs 5000 crores. As soon as Srimannarayana’s father accesses the fund at a bank, he dies of cardiac arrest and within no time, Srimannarayana is arrested on charges of swindling all the money. How
Balakrishna starrer Srimannaraya na treads a beaten track of scams, corruption and one do-gooder fighting for justice.
MOVIE Srimannarayana CAST Balakrishna, Isha Chawla, Parvati Melton
DIRECTOR Ravikumar ChavaliRao RATING 2.5/5
Srimannarayana manages to come clean and punish the culprits forms the rest of the story. Balakrishna is in his elements as a daring journalist and he holds the film together for the most part, although the costumes and make up department has done a lousy job, especially in the songs. Isha Chawla and Parvati Melton entertain in their roles; however, their track just doesn’t match with the seriousness of the theme. After a point of time, the film ends up being a revenge drama and how innovatively Srimannarayana kills the culprits who were responsible for the scam. It’s this lack of sophistication in dealing with the plight of farmers which strips the film of its honesty. Chakri’s music is loud and the flashy costumes in all the songs are an eye sore. Ravikumar Chavali has lost a good opportunity to recreate the sensibility last seen in Samanyudu. It’s a pity that Srimannarayana ends up being just another action drama which treads the beaten track.

KAKURO
QUICK CROSSWORD
26
SUDOKU How to play kakuro Kakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is also suitably different. The key question: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well here are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells — called a run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once. Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly: In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. This means that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on... So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is done through elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work out the answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid combinations, and hence the answer for this particular run. Note the second cell in row two — it contains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the 11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

PARALYMPIC GAMES
Records tumble on first day PHIL HAZLEWOOD Agencie France-Presse
that if I could get off to a great start it would set up the week and hopefully that's the case. "To get the gold medal is a dream come true." Britain's Royal Mail later confirmed it would produce a stamp in her honour, the first time ever that a set of stamps has been issued to celebrate Paralympic winners from the host country. China won both races in the C1-2-3 pursuit, with Zeng Sini breaking the world record in qualifying, while Germany's Tobias Graf set a new C2 best as he took bronze in the men's event. China ended the day with 15 medals, six of which were gold, ahead of Australia with nine medals including three golds. The Aussies were boosted by Kieran Modra and guide rider Scott McPhee, who took the men's blind and visually impaired 4km tandem pursuit, beating Modra's previous world best. Five world records tumbled in the swimming finals, with the highlight New Zealander Sophie Pascoe, who smashed the new best she set earlier in qualifying by more than three seconds in the final of the 200m SM10 individual medley. In the men's equivalent, Benoit Huot of Canada shaved his own previous world best down to 2min 10.01secs. Zheng Tao, meanwhile, finally beat the record set by Russia's Igor Plotnikov way back in 2004 in the men's S6 100m backstroke, while compatriot Lu Dong took the women's race, also in world record time, as China scooped three golds. Brazil's Daniel Dias became the fastest man ever in the S5 50m freestyle. Sergey Punko and Oxana Savchenko made it a Russian double in both S12 400m freestyle events.
LONDON: China ended the first day of the London Paralympics on top of the medal table but it was British cyclist Sarah Storey who stole the show on Thursday by storming to her eighth Paralympic gold. Storey took the women's C5 individual 3km pursuit after a lightning-quick qualifying time that would have won her a non-disabled title. The 34-year-old rider's winning performance, which opened the hosts' gold account, came amid a slew of new world bests in track cycling and swimming, as China took the first gold of the Games on the first day of competition. Storey, a five-time Paralympic swimming gold medallist who switched sports for the Beijing Games in 2008, caught Poland's Anna Harkowska with just under half of the 12-lap race to go, giving her a third cycling gold. The British cyclist earlier clocked a new world best of 3min 32.170sec, which would have won her silver at the World Championships earlier this year and the title at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup at the same venue in February. That World Cup race, a test event for the Olympic Velodrome, was won by her British compatriot Joanna Rowsell in 3min 32.364sec. Rowsell took Olympic gold earlier this month in the team pursuit. Storey, who was born without a functioning left hand and narrowly missed out on a place in Britain's Olympic squad, said: "I always thought

Successful surgery for champ Stoner SYDNEY: Reigning world champion Casey Stoner had successful surgery on his right ankle, his team said Friday, with the Australian hoping to be fit for the final races of the season. But he missed Sunday's Czech GP at Brno after being advised to have urgent surgery. AFP
DIAMOND LEAGUE
Bolt and Blake stay ahead LUKE PHILLIPS Agencie France-Presse ZURICH: Jamaican sprint duo Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake dominated the 100 and 200m at the Diamond League meet here on Thursday, but Kenyan 800m star David Rudisha was upstaged by Ethiopian tyro Mohammed Aman. In a night of action featuring 14 Olympic champions, training partners Bolt and Blake set new meeting records of 19.66 and 9.76 seconds in the 200 and 100m respectively. Fresh from his second successive triple gold haul at the Olympics, Bolt came around the bend into the final stretch just ahead of compatriot Nickel Ashmeade on his inside. And then the imposing 26-year-old, also the world record holder in
both sprint events, switched on the afterburners in his drive phase to ensure a comfortable win in his favoured event. "Running after the Olympics is much more fun, it is less stress," said Bolt. "Now I have one more race (in Brussels on
September 7) until the end of the season and I am looking forward to it. Blake overcame a false start by top US sprinter Tyson Gay to hold his nerve in a 100m raced in chilly, wet conditions at a packed Letzigrund Stadium.
The 22-year-old, who won double sprint silver behind Bolt in the London Games and is currently the second fastest man in the world alongside Gay (after racing 9.69sec in Lausanne last week), rocketed out of his blocks at the second time of asking to power through the line. Nesta Carter was second in 9.95sec, with American Ryan Bailey (9.97) in third. But there was disappointment for Rudisha, the blazing two-lap specialist who was bidding to better his own world record of 1min 40.91sec he set when winning 800m gold at the Games earlier this month. With all talk of the record bid, no one had counted on the kick of 18-year-old Aman, who finished sixth at the Olympics but who importantly last year became the first and last man to defeat Rudisha since 2009.

NEW ZEALAND IN INDIA
India makes inroads A positive start by the New Zealand batsmen and the healthy pace of run-scoring was undone by Guptill's unseemly departure. BANGALORE: New Zealand were 108-3 in their first innings at lunch after winning the toss on the opening day of the second and final Test against India in Bangalore on Friday. Skipper Ross Taylor was unbeaten on 27 at the break with Daniel Flynn seven not out. New Zealand were expected to be far more comfortable in the second Test surroundings in Bangalore rather than they were in Hyderabad, but have found themselves in a similar place. This time, after winning the toss and batting. A twin strike by Pragyan Ojha that lopped off the top of New Zealand's batting order, sent the visitors into lunch on day one at 108 for 3. Ross Taylor, the captain, was batting on 27 with Daniel Flynn on 7. Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson had put on 63 for the second wicket, before Ojha, who had opened the bowling for India, got both men in two short spells before lunch. Williamson had expected the ball to turn and played down the wrong line to Ojha and was struck on the thigh for 14.

Pragyan Ojha (L) celebrates with teammates the dismissal of New Zealand batsman Martin Guptil during the first day of the second Test match between India and New Zealand at M Chinnaswamy Satdium in Bangalore on Friday.
Guptill (53) then threw away a morning of handsome, eventful batting. After being turned square by Ojha and dropped off Zaheer, he had found his groove, resolute in judgement and positive in strokeplay. When Umesh Yadav struggled to find an inci-
sive line, Guptill struck him for three boundaries. Less than half an hour before lunch though, Ojha pulled in the fielders, tossed one up and lured Guptill. It was perfect bait: the ball didn't turn, Guptill's intended strike down the onside ended up in
Gautam Gambhir's hands at mid wicket. Despite India's slow bowling tradition, Ojha was the first specialist Indian spinner to open the bowling in a Test match. The first wicket however was to come off the fifth ball bowled by Zaheer Khan to

Brendon McCullum. McCullum was leg before, following a few that left him, with one that just inched its way back in. At 0-1, Guptill and Williamson were circumspect with Ojha at the other end. Ojha got one to float across Guptill's eyeline, leap off the wicket from leg stump, bite the shoulder of his bat and fly past a diving Sehwag as the lone slip. Three overs later, it was quick bowling from either end. Zaheer bowled with five slips and a gully to Guptill, and when the batsmen was on 17, he got a nick to fly to second slip Suresh Raina. The catch was dropped not by Raina but Kohli diving across from third. Guptill's response was to on-drive the next ball from Zaheer to the boundary. AGECIES

Tseng will snap out of slump: Woods Woods is keeping tabs on young woman golfers since his niece Cheyenne Woods turned pro. NORTON: Tiger Woods predicts women's world number one Yani Tseng will snap out of her current slump and return to the form that has brought her five major titles. Woods, a 14-time major champion who ended his own extended US tour title drought this year, played with Taiwan's Tseng this week at his university buddy Notah Begay's charity tournament and said he was glad to have a chance to meet her at last. "I had never met her, so it was nice to see her swing, see her
play and get to talk to her a little bit," Woods said, adding that his only advice to the Taiwanese star would be to stay patient. Tseng won three of the first five events on the 2012 LPGA tour schedule but missed the cut in three of five events heading into last week's Canadian Women's Open. In Vancouver she put herself atop the leaderboard, but couldn't maintain her momentum over the weekend in the tournament won by another rising young star — 15-year-old amateur Lydia Ko.
Tseng, who dominated women's golf in 2011 with seven LPGA titles that included two majors, has admitted battling a loss of confidence. But Woods said the player whose Women's British Open crown last year made her the youngest golfer to capture five majors, would find her form again. "We're all going to go through those lulls," Woods said as he prepared for the US PGA Tour's Deutsche Bank Championship.

DAVE JAMES Agencie France-Presse NEW YORK: Andy Roddick celebrated his 30th birthday on Thursday by announcing his retirement as Roger Federer, the great Grand Slam tormentor of the American, eased into the third round at the US Open. Roddick announced that he would retire after the current edition of the US Open. “I have decided that this is going to be my last tournament,” said Roddick, who is guaranteed an emotional reception on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night when he plays Australia’s Bernard Tomic. “I feel it is the right time to do it. These other guys have gotten really, really good and I’m not interested in just existing on tour. I don’t want to disrespect the game by coasting home.” Top seed and five-time champion Federer reached the last 32 with an easy 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win over

oger Federer (right) admitted he was saddened by Andy Roddick’s retirement, insisting he’ll always regard him as a “Wimbledon champion” despite the American’s epic failures to lift the All England Club title. “He could have gotten that title,” said Federer, whose stranglehold over Roddick also extended to the 2006 US Open championship match. “That’s what I said about him in 2009. He deserves this title as well. In my mind, he is a Wimbledon champion, a wonderful ambassador for the game. “I am thankful for everything he has
done in the sport here in America. It’s not been easy after (Andre) Agassi, (Pete) Sampras, (Jim) Courier, (Michael) Chang, (Jimmy) Connors, (John) McEnroe, you name them. “It’s been hard for him at times but I thought he always did the best he could. That’s all you can ask for from a guy like Andy.” Roddick, the 2003 US Open champion and a former world number one, turned 30 on Thursday and marked the occasion by revealing his intention to retire once this US Open is finished. “It’s sad. That’s how I felt when Andy told me,” added Federer. DJ
erena Williams has no plans to follow Kim Clijsters and Andy Roddick into retirement after the US Open, the 14-time Grand Slam champion saying their departures makes her more determined to keep going. US fourth seed Williams, coming off titles at Wimbledon and the Olympics in the past two months, advanced to the third round of the US Open with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez on Thursday. After the victory, she pondered Wednesday’s retirement of three-time US Open winner Kim Clijsters of
Belgium and 2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick’s announcement on Thursday that this would be his final tournament. “It makes me want to stay more,” Williams said. “It doesn’t make me say, ‘Oh I should retire.’ No I wouldn’t have anything to do.” Williams said she felt the departure of Clijsters more than she expected. “Losing Kim was so hard. I saw her yesterday. I just hugged her. My eyes got watery,” Williams said. “I know a lot of people look up to Andy Roddick. That’s who I want to be like,” she added. AFP

Suarez helps Liverpool down Hearts Despite dominating, they only scraped past the Scottish Premier League outfit.
GRAHAM CHASE Agencie France-Presse LIVERPOOL: Luis Suarez’s (top) late goal sent Liverpool into the Europa League group stage as the Reds drew 1-1 with Hearts at Anfield on Thursday to clinch a 2-1 aggregate success. Brendan Rodgers’ team had a 1-0 advantage from last week’s first leg at Tynecastle. David Templeton looked set to make
Liverpool pay for their wastefulness when his weak shot was allowed into the net by Pepe Reina with five minutes left. But three minutes later Suarez burst away down the left and managed to find the net from closerange to secure Liverpool’s place in the group stages of Europe’s second tier competition. It was an unnecessarily nervous end to the evening for a Liverpool side that had plenty of chances to see off the Edinburgh club. “We knew it was going to be tough,” Liverpool’s Stewart Downing said on ESPN. “We made more hard work of it than we should have done. We were a little bit wasteful in front of goal. “However, the manager stressed to the team ‘don’t go down under pressure’, and I think we bounced back well,” he added.
PREMIER LEAGUE City need time to find rhythm: Mancini GRAHAM CHASE Agencie France-Presse MANCHESTER: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini admits it could take several weeks before the Premier League champions hit peak form as their tired stars recover from Euro 2012. City have made an unbeaten start to their title defence, but Mancini knows his side have been below their best so far, with an unconvincing 3-2 win over
Southampton followed by a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Liverpool. The Italian believes the main reason for City’s lethargy is the mental and physical strain on his players after the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine. Mancini (left) decided to drop one of the key figures in his team, Spain’s David Silva, for the trip to Liverpool because he felt the playmaker needed rest to recoup.
INIESTA CROWNED EUROPEAN PLAYER OF SEASON
